Nebraska: The Good Life! YIPPEE! Come March 20th, it will officially be spring! I am so very ready. It’s been a very long winter. The cold, the wind, the snow, the ice—I wasn’t sure I was going to make it. Maybe I’ve just been spoiled by the mild winters the last couple of years. Maybe it’s because I had a lot on my plate over the last few months. Maybe it’s because it’s been just darned miserable! I can’t wait to be able to throw open my windows and air out the house. Sitting on my deck with a cup of coffee in the morning, soaking up the sun, gives me a surge of energy that I can’t get anywhere else. Bring it on! For some odd reason, I have run into several people who recently have moved to Nebraska from California. I am always curious as to what made such people take the leap from the warm California breezes, the ocean, and the mountains, to a climate that can be… challenging. After talking with a number of them, I see a definite pattern emerging. Everyone I met left California to avoid the high cost of living, to find a better school system for their kids, and to be able to feel safer than they did in their own home state. This got me thinking…Nebraska really IS the Good Life! I have lived here my entire life. I am proud to say I’m a native. I think that sometimes I take it all for granted. I don’t realize how lucky we are here…even with the lousy winter weather! This train of thought took me to another place—how important it is for me to remember to start my day with gratitude and appreciation for all that I have. I have friends and family who truly care about me. I have a business that I love with a passion. Every day, I get to meet some of the best individuals out there when I call on business owners to discuss how we can help them with their businesses by advertising with Women’s Edition. Entrepreneurs are a very special breed. They take an idea and turn it into something that they can be proud of. I have been blessed over the last 33 years to have met literally thousands of these individuals. Their stories amaze me. I always ask how they came up with the concept for their businesses. I’ve never heard the same story twice. Hundreds of people have asked me what it’s like to own your own business. I honestly tell them that it is very hard work but that you will learn more, grow more, and become a better human being because of it. Bring on spring! We’ll talk next month.

Nothing to Wear? Simple Spring Basics
By Holly Bell
Spring makes us want to clean, simplify, and freshen up everything inside our homes, including our closets. There are some basic items that every chic woman needs in her wardrobe, and spring is the best time to make sure these treasures are there, stylish, and in good shape. With these basic items, you can get dressed quickly and easily and always look put together. The first thing you need is a pair of classic white sneakers. I am not talking about a running shoe, just a lightweight, simple, casual shoe. These will go everywhere and with everything, from cropped pants to a summer dress, and they’re so comfortable. If you love the look, you can add more sneakers in fun patterns or colors, but start with a simple white. To go along with this casual chic look, you will also need a good quality white tee. It’s good to buy a few new ones at the beginning of the warm season; they stain easily, and you want to have them always looking fresh. You can do short sleeves or three-quarter length sleeves, but keep them simple—no fancy sleeves or necklines. As Audrey Hepburn well knew, nothing makes you look quite as put together as a smart pair of ankle-grazing black trouser pants. These are a great alternative to jeans and can be dressed down with your white kicks or dressed up with ballet flats (another classic necessity).

YOU…
a nd y o u
To top off your basic black-and-white looks, you will need the perfect blazer. Believe me—you need this even if you don’t work in an office. Make sure it is a good fit for you! If you’re petite, a shorter blazer may be flattering. To create or emphasize an hourglass silhouette, look for a slim cut with darts and princess seaming. Pop your blazer over your black pants and white tee and add a few accessories. You will love the ease of this polished look. No wardrobe would be complete without a little black dress. If you have a hard time finding a dress that is flattering to your figure, try a shift dress. This cut falls straight from your shoulder, skimming over your body and creating a long, slim line. Use a silky, flowy blouse to dress up your basics. This year, blouses are available in beautiful scarf prints of red, yellow, and black. These are great to wear flowing over your hips, or tucked into your black pants. Yes, I said to tuck it in—and tucking it in is in vogue now. If you don’t think that is flattering for you, try this slightly easierto-wear look: tucking in the front just a little bit and leaving the back of the shirt untucked. If you want a more blousy look, you can tie the front two shirttails together in the front for a flirty sort of vibe. Of course, everyone needs a great-fitting pair of jeans. I recommend a dark wash with no destruction for those of us who are over 50. Younger gals can get away with some rips and tears. For a casual look, pair the jeans with your white tee, blazer, and white sneakers. For a dressier look, wear the jeans with your silky blouse, blazer, and ballet flats. No look is complete without a few accessories. I recommend a great watch. A basic gold or silver watch with a large face looks smart. You also want a couple of simple, go-to necklaces. A single strand with a pearl will always work with everything. For a slightly bolder look, get a longer chain with an interesting pendant. Always tasteful, diamond stud earrings go with everything. Every woman needs a great solid-color bag to carry all the essentials. It needs to be large enough to carry everything you need but not so big as to look like you are spending the night somewhere. Choose a fun color to add a little personality to your wardrobe. To top it all off, you need two basic jackets: a stylish, well-cut jean jacket and a never-goes-out-of-style trench coat. If you have these classic items in your closet, you will find that you can always put together a chic outfit that makes you feel good. We know we will add on to these basics soon enough. Before we expand our wardrobes with spring looks, we need to make sure these select great pieces are in style, are clean, and are ready to wear at any given time. That way, we’ll never get stuck telling the mirror, “I have nothing to wear today!” Editor’s Note: Holly has been in the fashion industry for over 30 years as a buyer, boutique store owner, visual merchandiser, and fashion show producer. She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE

Leprechauns and March Madness—Let’s Eat! By Kate Beiting
Omaha Reubens Spread slices of pumpernickel bread with mayonnaise and Thousand Island dressing. Warm up the desired amount of corned beef and place it on the bread. Top with drained sauerkraut and several slices of Swiss cheese. Assemble sandwiches, coat the outside of the sandwiches with butter, and toast in a hot skillet until the cheese melts. Serve with dill pickle spears. Beer Bread Blend together 3 cups of flour, 3 teaspoons of baking powder, 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt, 3 Tablespoons of sugar, and 12 ounces of beer. Mix well. Pour into a greased loaf pan and bake at 375 degrees for 1 hour. Cool, slice, and serve. Sauerkraut Bread Mix the package of yeast and flour from a box of hot roll mix. Add 1 teaspoon of caraway seed and blend. Stir in 1 cup of drained sauerkraut, 1 cup of hot water, 2 Tablespoons of soft butter, and 1 egg. Mix for 2–3 minutes. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured counter and knead for 4–5 minutes. Let the dough rest for 5
minutes, then shape and put into a greased loaf pan. Cover loosely and let it rise for 30 minutes. Brush with egg wash and bake at 375 degrees for 35–45 minutes, until golden brown. Cool. Goes great with corned beef. Corned Beef and Cabbage Feast Place corned beef into a large stockpot and fill with enough water to cover three fourths of the beef. Add the spice packet that came with the package, as well as a bit more pickling spices, if desired. Add 1 cut-up onion and 2 cut-up carrots. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 3–4 hours on top of the stove. When the beef is done, place on a platter and cover with foil. ›››

Add 4–5 small potatoes to the pot, as well as a cut-up head of rinsed cabbage. Turn the heat to high and cook for about 10–15 minutes. Cut up the beef and serve with breads and spicy mustard, as well as the vegetables. Baked Halibut Brush several good-sized halibut steaks with butter. Lightly dredge in flour seasoned with Old Bay, lemon pepper, garlic powder, and dried dill. Place the halibut in a baking dish. Top with several slices of fresh onion and some fresh lemon juice. Pour 2 cups of hot milk over the fish. Bake at 425 degrees for 20–30 minutes or until the fish flakes. Serve with mashed potatoes and coleslaw. Guinness Stew Lightly flour a 2-pound chuck roast cut into 1-inch chunks. Heat 1 Tablespoon of oil in a stockpot or a Dutch oven. Brown the chuck for 5–6 minutes. Add 2 stalks of celery (diced), 2 carrots (diced), and 1 onion (sliced). Cook for another 3–4 minutes. Add 1 cup of Guinness beer and 2 cups of beef broth or consommé. Season with salt and pepper and 1 Tablespoon of ketchup or tomato paste. Add any other seasonings you desire, like thyme, rosemary, or minced garlic. Add 3 small peeled and diced potatoes (russet or sweet), 1 small peeled and diced parsnip, and 1 small peeled and diced turnip or rutabaga (optional). Cover the pot and place in a 300-degree oven for 2 hours. Remove from oven. If you need to add more liquid, do it now. Stir well. Add 1 cup of frozen carrots and peas and return to the oven for another 10 minutes. Serve with biscuits or buttered noodles. Save some for tomorrow’s pot pie!
Next-Day Pot Pie Heat up the leftover Guinness stew, adding more liquid, if needed. Pour into a greased cast iron skillet or casserole dish. Top with a prepared pie pastry (puff pastry works) and brush with a light egg wash, if desired. Bake on a cookie sheet at 400 degrees for 30 minutes (check often) or until golden brown. Pistachio Bundt Cake Mix 1 package of yellow or white cake mix (no pudding added) with 4 eggs, 1 cup of orange juice, 1/3 cup of vegetable oil, and 1 box of pistachio-flavored instant pudding. Mix on low for 1 minute, then beat on high for 3 minutes. Pour 2/3 of the batter into a greased and floured Bundt pan. Pour 1/3 cup of chocolate syrup into the remaining cake batter. Pour the chocolate batter on top of the mixture in the Bundt pan, and cut through with a knife to make swirls. Bake at 350 degrees for 40–50 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool for 15 minutes, then invert onto a platter. Let cool. Frost with a powdered sugar frosting tinted green. Garnish with chopped shelled pistachios or chocolate sprinkles. Irish Shortbread Cookies Beat 2 sticks of soft butter with 1/3 cup of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of salt for 3–4 minutes. Mix in 1 teaspoon of vanilla, gradually add 2 cups of flour, and beat on low until the dough comes together. Add 1 cup of chopped pecans (optional). Divide the cookie dough in half and roll out the dough to make 2 thick logs. Slice dough into 1/2-inch slices. Bake on a parchment-lined cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 20–25 minutes or until cookies are golden brown. Cool on a rack. Frost with tinted green icing, if desired. WE

Antler View Apartments Upscale, Affordable Urban Living By Loretta McCollum
What does it take to make an apartment feel like a luxury home? Large, open floor plans with vibrant colors? Check. Granite countertops, dishwasher, microwave, and ample cabinet space? Check. Large closets, in-unit washer and dryer, private balcony or patio? Check. Built, maintained, and managed by a local, family-owned company, allowing for top-notch, personalized service? Absolutely. Sound too good to be true? Think again. Welcome home to Antler View Apartments, located at 3132 North 186th Street, in Elkhorn. Owned and managed by Vann Realty Co., Antler View offers oneand two-bedroom living units, conveniently located near golfing, shopping, dining, and many other services. Additional amenities include a clubhouse, fitness center, playground, pool, night patrol, and package service. Located between West Maple and Blondo Streets, this parcel of land is one of the region’s latest hot spots. Last fall, top-rated Elkhorn Public Schools broke ground for a new high school in the area. One of Omaha’s premier public golf courses is located right across the street from Antler View. New retail shops, restaurants, hotels, and medical facilities are on the horizon. Antler View opened their first building in April of 2018. They are currently awaiting certificate of occupancy approval on four additional buildings, bringing the total number of units to 384. “We receive lots of positive comments on the spacious floor plans, the granite countertops, and the fact that each unit has its own washer and dryer,” says manager Rachel Bryan. Another feature that differentiates Antler View from other apartment properties is that the two-bedroom units also contain two bathrooms. For enhanced privacy, the two bedrooms are not adjacent to each other but are on opposite sides of the unit. Perhaps the most distinguishing aspect of Antler View is its top-notch customer service. Rachel has been with Vann Realty, the general contractor and the management company, for 18 years. Rachel and her team of leasing consultants, groundskeepers, and maintenance personnel excel in tenant services, and they are all employees of family-owned Vann Realty Co. Eileen Randell, a Vann Realty Co. employee since 1967 and currently executive vice-president, explains the Vann Realty Co. difference. “Our owner has a class B contractor license, which allows us to act as our own general contractor, and we only build for ourselves,” she notes. “We own and manage our own buildings, putting us a step above. Because it is a family-owned business, we can make decisions faster.”

Fresh out of business school in 1967, Eileen went to work for Howard Vann in a Front l-r: Eileen Randell and Tom Vann one-room office, answering the phone and paying Back l-r: Michael Vann, the bills. “Since we were a small company, I had to Rachel Bryan, jump right in and do things that I had never done Russ Jackson, Anna Salzmann, before,” she recalls. “I learned by making mistakes.” and Tom Clark Howard was a key influence in her career. “He would say that he’d rather have me make a decision and have it be a mistake than make no decision at all,” she says. “If you make a mistake, you wouldn’t make the same mistake again.” Eileen practices this philosophy with her current employees. She emphasizes that it’s important to trust employees to make some decisions on their own. “It’s very stressful to not have a say in what happens in the company, and sometimes they know better how to solve a problem because they have been dealing with it,” she points out. “The majority of our employees, many of whom have been with us for years, are involved in the construction process. Involving your employees in the entire process better prepares them to provide great tenant service.” When Howard passed away in 2002, his son, Tom, took over the reins. Now, Tom’s son has joined the business, continuing the Vann Realty Co. legacy. The company’s employees work hard to provide quality, affordable homes for Antler View’s residents. All tenants have access to the tenant portal, where they can view their ledger, pay rent, and request maintenance or repairs. When a maintenance request is received, employees contact the tenant to schedule the repair. Follow-through is always conducted to ensure that the tenant is satisfied. “Our employees are the most important part of the business because they are the people that our tenants interact with,” Eileen says. They must be doing something right, because many of the occupants at Antler View are referrals from other tenants. Eileen reports that several of their tenants who had left the Omaha area have since returned and sought out a Vann Realty Co. property. If you want a luxury apartment and you’re ready to enjoy the small-town vibe and big-city conveniences that Elkhorn provides, get in touch with Rachel and her team at 402-614-1613 to schedule a tour. Why We Cry Tears of Sorrow, Tears of Joy By Sharon Knierim
Do you ever wonder why we cry? If you’ve ever stopped to think about it, you’ll be able to recognize that there are tears of happiness as well as tears of loss or melancholy. Naturally, we all prefer tears of contentment and pride. These are the tears that cheer us up and make us glad that we’re alive. Tears of sadness can work one of two ways. Some people feel worse after crying over disappointment or loss. Others insist that there is nothing as soul-cleansing as a good old-fashioned crying jag. Whatever our reasons for crying, it is always an emotional trigger that brings these salty drops to our cheeks, reddening our eyes and swelling our nasal passages. For some of us, crying results in the hiccups, in more crying, or at least in some embarrassment. Crying is a natural process, though, and sometimes it is the only option we have to express our strong emotions. I have seen grown men cry, though not often. It is a disturbing sight for someone like me, as I grew up among men who seemed like solid steel. This was a group of men identified by Tom Brokaw as “the greatest generation.” They simply did not cry when anyone was looking, so we all naturally assumed that the male portion of the human

population didn’t cry at all, though I’m sure they had plenty to cry about at times! The one and only time I saw our father cry was after he received news that his best friend had passed away suddenly. Dad went immediately to the barn, and I sneakily followed him. Peeking through an open window, I encountered the most disturbing sight I had seen in my young life. There stood our dad, crying like a baby. Deflated to have seen him in such a downcast manner, I ran back to the house and never spoke about it. When I did see him about an hour later, he seemed fully recovered and very dignified again. Many women were and still are champion criers.

Perhaps we’re more emotionally wired to let our tear ducts flow when the time is right, or perhaps we just feel more comfortable letting it out. There is nothing shameful or undesirable about crying! Have you seen the movie “Steel Magnolias”? Now, that is a real tearjerker. I have been able to watch it only one time. I suppose that story is too familiar or cuts too close to home for some of us. Our mother cried tears of joy when she saw her firstborn son fly over our family farm in the late 1950s. He had made arrangements with his pilot buddy to fly over, dip their wings, circle, dip their wings one more time, and then fly on. Although she knew in advance that this event was going to take place, she was so overwhelmed by it that she cried for nearly an hour. Those were tears of pride and happiness, and I’m so glad she had that opportunity to see our brother spread his wings. Tears of physical pain must be acknowledged, too. Sometimes, when we are experiencing tremendous pain, there seems no way to prevent or stop crying. Pain is a lonely place, filled with such uncertainty. We don’t know what will happen to us next or what the outcome will be for us. Not to be forgotten are the tears of a broken heart or as the result of getting our feelings hurt. These tears and their triggers are just awful. Nobody enjoys hurt feelings, and we often are left with a bitter taste afterwards. After the “big cry,” we may feel self-doubt and a lack of trust toward others and toward ourselves and our own judgment. The best move to make is to have a thorough weep. Cry it out before starting to rebuild your pride and confidence. Of course, we all know that tears of joy and happiness are the best tears that there are. This kind of tearing up feels good and always has a good outcome. If you are a big crier, like some of my friends and relatives, be sure to always carry lots of tissues wherever you go. If you’re lucky enough to be married to a farmer (or a craftsman), this may be taken care of for you—they always have huge cotton handkerchiefs in their pockets that soak up extra amounts of those salty tears. Just be sure to kindly launder it for him before returning it to his stash of hankies! I hope you only have good tears in the future. WE

SuperSlow Zone
Premier Wellness, Designed for You By Cynthia Jeffrey
When was the last time you walked up a flight of stairs without pausing? Got down on the floor to play with your child or grandchild? Between sore joints, weaker muscles, and lack of time to exercise, it’s easy to lose mobility as we age. How can we minimize this loss without going overboard at the gym and getting injured? SuperSlow Zone can help you meet and exceed your wellness goals. This facility isn’t a typical gym. It is a premier personal wellness and exercise studio— the only one of its kind in the state of Nebraska. All of the five trainers are certified and accredited SuperSlow Zone instructors. They are trained specifically to teach clients how to use the medicalgrade Nautilus equipment at SuperSlow Zone and will meet you at your wellness level. SuperSlow Zone provides individual assessments and training programs for each and every person they meet. Their state-of-the-art software program allows them to easily track and monitor the progress of their clients. SuperSlow Zone is for everyone who wants to improve their overall strength and wellness. It’s also a great choice for people with busy schedules, since each full-body workout takes just 20 minutes. Wait—20 minutes? How can you complete a full-body workout in just 20 minutes? As owner and trainer Julie Galloway explains, you build muscle mass by working each muscle in your body to the point of fatigue. You are also exercising your cardiovascular system, all in a high-intensity, low-impact, structured workout. The best part is that you are under the supervision of a trained instructor who is watching every move to ensure your safety. Who can benefit from this type of activity? Everyone. Client Tracy shares her story: “I was searching for a workout program that would fit into my busy lifestyle. I am a wife, a mother to three young children, and employed full-time in a career I love. Working out was not something I felt I had time for, but I needed some extra energy, better sleep, and—let’s face it—some general toning of muscles that hadn’t seen a gym in almost 10 years.” “I was approached by a colleague about SuperSlow Zone two years ago,” Tracy continues. “I couldn’t be happier with my decision to join. Two days a week, I spend 20 minutes lifting weights with a personal trainer. I have more energy during my work day. I sleep better. I have muscle tone. I feel strong. I have found the workout that works for me. The results I have gotten keep me coming back.” Julie’s clients range in age from 19 to 90 years, and many of her members have been with SuperSlow Zone for all of the six years they have been open. How do they maintain such high client loyalty? It’s simple:

Their clients see results, have more energy, and feel amazing! Just hear it from client Bill: “I was curious about this unique approach to exercise. My back pain is gone, I lost a very stubborn 10 pounds, and I’m stronger than I believe I’ve ever been. Those three months have turned into more than two years, and I can’t imagine going back to my pre-SuperSlow Zone days!” For one reason or another, many people do not make exercise a priority. Unfortunately, the cost of being unhealthy is high, both financially and physically. At SuperSlow Zone, you can expect an incredibly efficient workout. This supervised strength training will increase your metabolism and allow your body to burn calories faster. “I couldn’t be happier To arrange a consultation, visit with my decision to join. superslowzone.com/ westomaha or call 402-708Two days a week, I spend 5679. Deborah says it does. “I have been working out at SuperSlow Zone for a year,” she shares. “My hubby even tells people how well it works! I no longer have flabby arms, and I have abs! I have lost 15 pounds since I started. I feel terrific.” It’s hard to argue with results. You won’t get this specialized attention at a traditional gym without spending a ton of money. You’ve got 20 minutes, twice a week, to invest in yourself. You’re worth it! Let the trainers at SuperSlow Zone help you become the healthiest version of yourself. WE

Living Well With Allergies Don’t Let Allergies Get You Down!
By Kylie Gumpert
What impacts nearly 50 million Americans every single year, can be life-threatening, and is a health issue whose cause scientists still can’t pinpoint? Allergies. Even when they’re relatively mild, they are no fun for anyone. What can you do to ensure you are protecting yourself and living your fullest life, even with allergies? Let’s take a look. An allergy is when your body recognizes a substance (called an allergen) in your body as harmful and reacts, attempting to get rid of it. During this process, the body releases immunoglobulin, an antibody that tells certain cells to release chemicals that cause allergy symptoms. Many substances are known to cause people’s bodies to react in this way. The most common allergens include types of medication, foods, insect stings or bites, latex or other materials, and airborne allergens like mold, dander, and pollen. Common reactions to allergens include sneezing, coughing, diarrhea, rashes, hives, cramps, pain, swelling, redness, tightness in the chest, and, of course, itchy eyes, nose, or skin. Anaphylaxis is a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that can include a drop in blood pressure, difficulty breathing due to narrowing airways, a skin rash, a weak pulse, and nausea or vomiting. It requires immediate medical attention and a medication called epinephrine, which can be prescribed as a portable injection device. Why some people’s bodies overreact to substances that should be harmless and other people’s bodies do not is still not fully understood. What we do know is that allergies appear to be increasing over time. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that food allergies among children in the United States increased by 50 percent between 1997 and 2011 and that nutspecific allergies among children more than tripled during that time. The most common food allergies include milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish, and sesame, according to Food Allergy Resource & Education. The same study found that skin allergies among children also increased by almost 70 percent. Respiratory allergies seem to have remained about the same during this period of time. It’s important to keep in mind that the United States has been experiencing warmer weather over the last several years, and the pollen season is almost one month longer than normal. This increases the time that people are exposed to irritating warm-weather allergens. We also know that having allergies is often inherited from family members. This doesn’t necessarily mean that specific allergies will be passed down, just that children are more likely to have allergies if their parents do. Some people do outgrow their allergies over time, but it’s difficult to pinpoint why. Very few people will outgrow certain allergies, such as allergies to peanuts, fish, or shellfish, according to the Mayo Clinic. In order to properly diagnose someone with allergies,
20

a doctor must gather a personal and medical history, conduct a physical examination, and then perform one or a series of allergy tests. All of these things are essential to making a medical diagnosis, as allergy tests alone can be inconclusive. Common allergy tests include the skin prick test, intradermal skin test, patch tests, blood tests, supervised challenge tests, and food elimination diets. The skin prick test involves a physician placing a small amount of liquid allergen on the patient’s skin, then lightly pricking the area. If the skin becomes red, swollen, or itchy at the site, an allergy is possible. If there is no reaction, the patient is likely not allergic to that particular substance. The intradermal test is similar to the skin prick test. With an intradermal test, the medical professional will inject a small amount of allergen just under the patient’s skin. This type of test is best for diagnosing drug or venom allergies, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, but it does not work well for determining food allergies. The patch test helps physicians understand if particular allergens cause skin reactions. They will place the allergen on the patient’s skin, cover it, and check back after two or three days to see if a rash has developed. Blood tests look at how many antibodies—which attack allergens, causing allergic reactions—the patient’s blood produces when an allergen is added. A physician-supervised challenge test involves a patient with a suspected allergy inhaling or consuming that allergen. The physician, usually an allergist who specializes in diagnosing, treating, and managing allergies, will observe the patient’s reaction and respond appropriately if a severe reaction occurs. A food elimination diet will help physicians and patients understand whether suspected foods are causing allergic reactions. Essentially, the diet involves cutting out these foods for a period of weeks and monitoring whether the patient’s symptoms go away while the foods are not being consumed. Once the doctor or allergist knows more about the allergy and the severity of a patient’s reaction, particular treatments can be considered. Depending on the situation, treatment options might include avoiding the allergen altogether, taking medication to combat the reaction, or participating in immunotherapy to decrease the patient’s sensitivity to an allergen. When possible, avoiding the allergen is a patient’s
www.womensedition.com
best bet toward feeling good and living safely, uninterrupted by the troubles that allergies can bring. This also prevents extensive use of medications that may well come with side effects. Of course, avoiding allergens can be much easier said than done, especially if it means staying indoors whenever there’s pollen in the air, re-homing a beloved pet, or avoiding ingredients (like dairy or wheat) that are present in many common foods. For patients who can’t or won’t avoid their allergens, medication can help mitigate the symptoms of allergic reactions. Common allergy medications include corticosteroids, antihistamines, mast cell stabilizers, decongestants, and epinephrine. These may be available over the counter, by prescription, or both. Corticosteroids help reduce the swelling or inflammation that can lead to other symptoms like itchiness, pain, or general discomfort. Corticosteroids come in many forms, and the best mode of administration depends on the type of symptoms. Nasal corticosteroids specifically target nasal allergies. Corticosteroid cream is best for itchy skin or rashes, and oral corticosteroids can help stop severe reactions. Antihistamines and mast cell stabilizers both target histamine, a chemical that causes swelling. Antihistamines block histamine, while mast cell stabilizers prevent it from being released in the first place. Decongestants won’t stop sneezing or itching, but they will shrink the swollen blood vessels causing congestion in your nose. Epinephrine is the only medication that can treat life-threatening anaphylaxis. It is pre-measured and self-injectable, and it’s vital for it to be administered soon after a severe allergic reaction takes place. Immunotherapy treatments include allergy shots and sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT). Both of these treatments involve gradually exposing patients to more and more of their allergens. In
some cases, this gradual exposure can lead to less severe reactions. Allergy shots can work for airborne allergies such as pollen, dander, and insect bites or stings, but they are not effective for food or medicine allergies or for allergic skin reactions. A physician will inject small amounts of an allergen in increasing amounts over time. Sublingual immunotherapy works essentially the same way, but the allergen is ingested orally in tablet form by the patient. This treatment works well for nasal allergies and asthma. There is a promising new drug that might help treat peanut allergies, though it is not yet approved by the Food and Drug Administration. According to a study in The New England Journal of Medicine, 67 percent of children who took the oral immunotherapy drug AR101 were able to consume a small amount of peanuts without serious symptoms. Natural treatments may also help with allergies, but you always want to talk to your physician or allergist before taking something new to make sure it’s safe and won’t react with any other medication you may be taking. These treatments often involve advice that is helpful for general health and wellness, like eating healthier, taking vitamins, and getting enough exercise. Acupuncture or herbal supplements that act as natural antihistamines may also provide some symptom relief. There are still many mysteries surrounding just why allergies occur and why they are increasing, but scientists are working toward better treatments and answers. If you think you might have an allergy, set up an appointment with an allergist today and get the answers you need to stay safe, healthy, and happy. Stuck In a Pain Cycle? BodyWise Therapy, PC By Elizabeth French
With a winning combination of tactile techniques and verbal communication, Shanna Paopao of BodyWise Therapy, PC, provides relief to a diverse group of clients, from infants to young athletes to older adults dealing with chronic pain. In her 20 years as a physical therapist, Shanna has gained experience with all ages and conditions. After training as a physical therapist at UNMC, Shanna worked in different places, including nursing homes, hospital inpatient wards, and outpatient settings, before going out on her own. Shanna began a partnership with another solo practitioner in 2013 and took over for her in 2014 as sole operator of BodyWise Therapy. Shanna uses a hands-on technique called myofascial release, a term coined by John F. Barnes. The treatment itself focuses on the fascia—the connective tissue all throughout the body. “It surrounds all of our blood vessels and organs, including the brain and the spinal cord. It’s what joins everything.” It is essential to maintain the health of this layer of connective tissue. Trauma, bad posture, or inflammation may cause

tension, resulting in additional pressure on sensitive nerves, muscles, blood vessels, and organs. The catch is that fascia does not appear on standard tests such as CAT scans or x-rays. Therefore, it is essential to use a tactile approach. Shanna prefers a holistic, overall look at health and the way we move about every day. “We all need to move more,” she says. Though not all injuries are preventable, it’s true that when the body is at rest too often, the risk of fascial pain increases. Totally Vein Go Ahead—Be Vain About Your Veins! By Cynthia Jeffrey
Many of us notice our veins when they become unsightly, but we may not be aware of the underlying and sometimes dangerous medical issues that bring veins into view. Whether your concern is cosmetic, functional, or both, take your vein trouble to Totally Vein. The tagline at Totally Vein is “veins are all we do,” and that makes them unique in the Omaha area. Stephen Torpy, MD, FACS, RPVI, and Robert Zadalis, MD, FACS bring over 56 years of surgical experience into this clinic. They are knowledgeable and passionate about the many types of vein treatment. Dr. Zadalis loves being able to provide a service that offers a 95 percent success rate. Many patients have difficulty even walking into the office, but they walk out feeling better, with significant improvements to their quality of life. They are soon able to return to the activities they love without pain. Roughly 50 percent of women may develop venous disease, due to pregnancy, genetics, history of DVT, hormones, or occupational hazards. “Pregnancy is probably the number one cause of venous disease,” says Dr. Zadalis. In addition to swollen varicose veins, symptoms of venous disease may include swelling or pain in the legs, an overall feeling of heaviness in the legs, itching, burning, and leg cramps. Varicose veins may be due to a secondary underlying condition, so please don’t ignore any changes that you may be observing in your veins. If you are experiencing any or all of these symptoms, get in touch with the team at Totally Vein for a consultation. They provide minimally invasive treatments in a modern office. Some of their patients are referred by general health practitioners, as venous disease can stem from other medical conditions. Most of their patients are referrals from other satisfied patients. “Over the last three to four years, I had experienced discomfort in my left leg, including aching, swelling, itching, hair loss, skin discolorations, and sores,” relates client Brad. “I had the Venefit procedure done in December. It was nearly painless! I walked out of the office and went Christmas shopping the next day. Most dramatically, my lower leg stopped swelling, even after a full day on my feet.” About 12 weeks after the procedure, Brad notes, his skin discolorations and vein protrusions “have almost vanished, and the hair has grown back where before there was none. I can hardly tell that I ever had a vein problem.” How can you keep your veins healthy? Dr. Zadalis recommends maintaining an active lifestyle by exercising and getting your body moving. However, if you have any concerns about the health of your veins, simply contact them for a consultation. You can expect a physical examination and, if warranted, an ultrasound. At that

point, you will discuss treatment options with your physician and will develop a plan of action together. All procedures are done within the office under local anesthesia. Jodi, a triage nurse, was hurting but was nervous about what vein treatment a doctor would recommend. “I went to bed every night with my legs throbbing,” she says. “I started wearing support hose to bed in an effort to reduce the discomfort. I was trying to avoid what I thought would be an invasive surgical procedure, followed by a long recovery, to have the ropey veins removed. What a relief! I was back to work the day after each procedure, and my legs continue to improve every day.” Jodi is probably not alone in her apprehension about vein treatments, but today’s treatments are much different than in the past. The days and weeks of healing are gone—in many cases, patients feel immediate relief with very little downtime. Don’t let fear of the unknown stop you from living your life! Paula, another satisfied client, reassures us that we’ll be pleasantly surprised by the treatments available at Totally Vein. “Everything was wellplanned and explained, and extra touches were provided to make the patient feel good during the process.” For those of us who are unfamiliar with the ablation procedures for vein treatment, Paula shares that “any discomfort is as easy as a filling at the dentist!” March is Free Consultation Month at Totally Vein. Use this opportunity to address small issues before they become larger issues like external bleeding or ulcers. Your veins might go unnoticed until they start popping up, but they do so much to keep you healthy! Give them the respect and care they deserve. For more information about a free consultation in March or the treatments and services available at Totally Vein, visit them online at totallyveinomaha. com or give them a call at 402-934-6996. Let the experienced doctors and staff at Totally Vein get you back to doing what you love (and wearing what you love!). Totally Vein is located at 17001 Lakeside Hills Plaza, Suite 102, in Omaha. WE

Getting It Straight Orthodontic Options for Every Age
By Loretta McCollum
Comedienne Phyllis Diller said, “A smile is a curve that sets everything straight.” It’s so true—one of the first things people notice about you is your smile. Flashing a big grin doesn’t just elevate your own mood, it’s also highly contagious. A great smile increases self-esteem and confidence. Whether you’re seven or 70, an orthodontist or pedodontist can help you put your best smile forward. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children should be seen by an orthodontist no later than age seven. By this time, children will typically have some permanent teeth, allowing the orthodontist to determine whether a problem may be developing. If early treatment is suggested, this is an opportunity to correct inappropriate oral habits, guide proper jaw growth, and help ensure proper alignment of future permanent teeth. Early orthodontic treatment is often performed in two phases. Phase I treatment typically occurs between the ages of 7 and 11 years, over a span of 10–14 months, and it does not necessarily involve braces. Appliances such as expanders are utilized to prepare the jaw for incoming permanent teeth, helping to avoid extractions as the child ages. A retainer may be worn until Phase II treatment begins. Phase II treatment starts when most of the permanent teeth are in place. Traditional wire braces remain the most-used alignment correction method for young people, although today’s wire brackets

are smaller and less noticeable than in years past. Thermal technology in orthodontics is also becoming widespread. With thermal braces, the wires used to move the teeth are activated by body heat, reducing the number of adjustments needed and minimizing discomfort by adjusting teeth more gradually and gently. Overall discomfort with all types of braces is usually minimal and can be treated with over-the-counter pain meds. Ceramic braces are another option. The same size and shape as metal braces, their brackets are tooth-colored, making them much less noticeable than traditional wire brackets. Some also incorporate tooth-colored wire, rendering them even more inconspicuous. Alternatively, some patients opt for colored wires to complement their personality or to coordinate with seasons or holidays. No matter which appliance is chosen, the average amount of time required for alignment correction ranges from 18–36 months, depending ›››

on the degree of correction needed. When those braces finally come off, it’s a big deal for young people who are still learning how to be comfortable in their own skin, but it doesn’t end there. Mom and Dad have invested substantial time and money on the health of their children’s teeth, and they don’t want to repeat the process in a few years, nor do they want their children to have to deal with it again as adults. The best way to avoid future orthodontic issues is to wear a retainer. A retainer holds teeth in place after braces have been removed and gives the bone that holds the teeth an opportunity to stabilize and rebuild. The most common type of retainer, and the most durable, is composed of an acrylic body and a wire that goes around the teeth. Retainers should be worn continuously for six months after the removal of braces, followed by overnight wear indefinitely. Though braces are often associated with tweens and teens, it’s important to remember that it’s never too late to seek orthodontic treatment. Many orthodontists report that 30 to 50 percent of their patients are adults. The basic treatment methods do not differ significantly between adults and youth, but there are additional considerations for older patients. First and foremost, adults are no longer growing, which means harder bones and possible loss of bone density. It may take longer to correct alignment, since adult bones are not as responsive to pressure. Have crowns or bridges? No problem. Once teeth are aligned, bridges and crowns can be properly placed. Adult orthodontic patients are often concerned with the aesthetics of tooth realignment. They are established in their careers and don’t want to give the impression of being immature. As previously mentioned, today’s braces are much smaller, and toothcolored braces are less noticeable. Another popular choice for adults is Invisalign. With Invisalign, patients wear a clear plastic aligner for 20–22 hours per day. There are no wires, and patients’ food and drink choices are not as restricted, as the aligners can be removed to eat, drink, brush, and floss. They are virtually invisible and are switched out every couple of weeks as teeth gradually shift. Your local orthodontist or pedodontist can provide more information on these and other treatments designed for both children and adults. Life Is Good Becoming a Better Person Well, here is the good news: I am changing, and I am growing. I used to think that I was great just the way I was. I had my life “under control.” I had a pattern to my life that had become very comfortable. Change was not something I sought or even wanted. Then, five and a half years ago, I decided to buy a restaurant/bar. Most people, myself included, thought it was a midlife crisis. All of a sudden, my very controlled life was totally out of control. In the past, I could have told you what I was going to be doing for the next six months, 12 months, or 5 years. Now, I didn’t know what I was going to have to be called on to do even that afternoon. Boy, was it tough. “Nothing is so painful to the human mind as a great and sudden change.”—Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, “Frankenstein” As of the first of this year, the restaurant/bar is no more. Hmm…how do I feel? Absolutely fantastic! I am back working at Women’s Edition, taking care of the magazine that I started 33 years ago. I admit, I’m a little rusty! Some of the habits and responsibilities came back very quickly, like riding a bike. In other areas, I still have quite a bit of catching up to do. I have spent many—many!—hours asking the question:
By Janet Van deWalle
WHY? Why did I do this? Why did I choose to go on a path so radically different from any path I’d been on before? The reality is, I think the universe offered up this challenge to force me to change. Force me to grow. Force me to become a different person—a better person. “The only way that we can live is if we grow. The only way that we can grow is if we change. The only way that we can change is if we learn. The only way we can learn is if we are exposed. And the only way that we can become exposed is if we throw ourselves out into the open. Do it. Throw yourself.” —C. JoyBell C. As I said, the good news is that I am changing and growing. The bad news? Well, I’m choosing not to focus on that. I am choosing to continue on the path of growth. What’s changed is that I now relish change. I relish growth. I am looking at myself differently. I feel as if I am a better person, a stronger person, a kinder person, a person who has changed and grown. Life is good. “Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” —Rumi

Refresh, Renew, Reinvigorate A Fresh Start for A New Season Ahh, spring! Mother Nature spends this time of year refreshing, renewing, and reinvigorating her domain. She refreshes the dreary skies and monochromatic tones of winter with vibrant shades of green. She renews the landscape with delicate sprouts of new growth. Her reinvigorating breezes are gentler than the harsh, biting winds we’ve been experiencing for the past few months. She reminds us that it’s time to open up and air out…everything. Start the process with spring cleaning. Open windows to let out stale, overheated air. Sweep away winter’s accumulation of grime and cobwebs. Scrub windows, walls, and floors of their wintery pall. (Who knew snow could be so dirty?) Cull your wardrobe of tired winter clothing in order to make room for lighter garments. Next, turn your attention outdoors. Freshen the yard by removing the debris that always gathers over the winter months. Clear the gardens of old growth. Plant flowers and sow seeds in anticipation of new growth. Get everything physically freshened and ready for the new season. Everything now has a new, fresher, look…but something is missing. Somehow, we’ve missed what’s most important. The urge to renew, refresh, and reinvigorate in preparation for the new season should carry over to our personal lives. Pour another cup of coffee. Fix a glass of iced tea. Sit down and take stock. Are there any projects you’ve been meaning to do…or have left incomplete? Have you been putting off contacting an old friend or relative? Are

there any relationships that need attention? Is there anything you want for yourself? Make a list of what is needed to finish the job and then do it. Every time you cross something off your list, it becomes easier to attack the next item. Make the call. Write the letter. Send a card or email. Let others know you’re thinking about them. It’ll brighten their day and lift your spirits at the same time. While you’re making connections, take steps to make amends. Do you need to say you’re sorry? Is there a past conflict that needs to be addressed? Make the move yourself instead of waiting for the other person to act. It’s not easy, but it’ll be one less thing nagging you for action. Now, it’s time to take care of you. Look at your schedule. Is it too busy or not full enough? Is it all about others, with nothing just for you? Change it accordingly! Eliminate some of the things you feel you have to do and replace them with things you want to do. You’re in charge here, remember? Take care of the mental, physical, and emotional areas of your life. Master Strokes The Transformative Power of Paint
By Robyn V. Powell
The arrival of springtime naturally inspires us to refresh our living spaces. If a large renovation is not in your plans this year, you can still breathe new life into your space with fresh paint. This year’s painting trends draw inspiration from the restorative power of nature, balancing our desire for a more mindful lifestyle. Check out some of the latest trends and discover how paint can transform your space in a simple and cost-effective way. Every design plan, whether it’s a single room or an entire home, begins with color. Walls are the canvas from which everything else in a room will work. Simply put, there’s no more important design decision than choosing the right paint color. What’s more, selecting color isn’t just a matter of taste. There’s plenty of scientific evidence suggesting that color has a major impact on mood—so much that it can actually change the way you feel! As society longs for a more simplified lifestyle, 2019 sees a move in the direction of deep, rich, earthy tones. While light neutrals in slightly warmer tones will continue to dominate walls, using deep colors on accent walls and cabinetry is a beautiful way to incorporate these bold, complex colors without overwhelming the space. When choosing color, it’s important to determine the primary function of a room. Ask yourself: What will this room be used for, who will spend time there, and how do you want them to feel

while they’re in the room? If, for example, you want to stir up lively conversation in a dining room or living room, look to warm, energizing, and fun colors such as the currently trending corals and terra-cottas. Looking to create warmth and harmony in a kitchen? Yellow, the sunshine shade, channels springtime and stimulates joy and happiness. Too bright or too much, however, can be overwhelming. Balance and tone are key to keeping yellow mellow! Cool, subdued hues like blue and green draw their inspiration from nature and the ocean. Evoking calm and tranquility, these hues are ideally suited to bedrooms and bathrooms, coaxing the mind to relax and escape. Neutral whites, grays, and blacks create a more contemporary feel. White walls really open up a room, lending a light and airy feel and the appearance of more space. Black absorbs light and is best used as an accent color to add drama and elegance. ›››

If you want an update in the kitchen but aren’t ready to remodel, try painting your cabinets. Depending on how much detail and prep work is required, pricing will vary, but having cabinet doors professionally sprayed will ensure a smooth finish. Painting laminate countertops is a cost-effective way to improve their style quotient. Mimic the look of granite or stainless steel with a faux granite paint or a shiny-satin finish paint in gray metallic. Painting countertops is not meant to be a long-term solution, but it’s an affordable and attractive option that can make a world of difference in the short term. Even in spaces where you aren’t painting the walls, there are plenty of ways to be creative with paint. There’s no better way to update a piece of furniture than painting it! Bring a crisp new look to a bedroom by painting a headboard. Turn an ordinary bureau or desk into a stunning design statement with bold new color. Painted surfaces are subject to wear and tear, especially if you have children or pets. Scuff marks, handprints, and crayon drawings appear on walls because, well, accidents and artwork just happen! Choosing a durable paint can mean the difference between an inconvenience and a ruined wall. Look for paints designed specifically for high-traffic areas. Choose high-quality, washable, low-VOC paint in a semi-gloss finish for easy cleanup. Sometimes, a wall is so flawed that ordinary paint simply won’t cover it up. Using a textured paint, with its thick and intentionally uneven surface, is a great option to revitalize such areas. Textured paint is also ideal for a feature wall, where a subtle texture difference adds visual interest to a room. Certain home improvement projects are best done by professionals, and painting is definitely one of them. You would be amazed how much time, mess, and re-painting you can avoid by hiring pros! A designer with a good eye who understands color psychology is a smart investment, saving you time and costly mistakes. Many designers offer a flat-fee color consultation. The next step for a successful painting project is to choose a reliable, experienced painter who has completed similar jobs. Personal referrals are your best resource, and always request a formal written estimate. Assemble the right team and let the power of paint transform your spaces—and your mood—for the better! Reinvigorate Your Life Celebrate Your Second Season By Marge Shoemaker
We women go through several stages in our lives. We begin with our youth and the years of pre-motherhood. Most of us spend these years going to school, dating, and generally preparing for adulthood. Through these years, we have many sources of guidance: parents and other family members, teachers, and various publications on which to rely. There are also many sources of guidance and counseling to turn to during the challenging years of motherhood. For each of these life stages, there are community resources available to answer our many questions. Then, suddenly, everything changes. Susan Runnels, the founder of Your Second Season, realized this when she reached her late 40s. “I just didn’t feel right,” she explains. “Unfamiliar things were happening to my body—hot flashes, cold sweats, lack of energy and focus, the beginnings of anxiety.” Susan made it her mission to find out what was happening. She started researching symptoms and talking to professionals. “It took a lot of time and effort to get any information at all,” she recalls. “Even my doctor said it was ‘just something women go through.’” The more Susan delved into the subject of female life changes, the more she found a wide difference in attitude between the United States and other parts of the world…nearly all the websites she found were European. Susan has always been an arranger, and this was her “aha” moment. She gathered all the fragments of information and various resources she’d located, brought them under one umbrella, and founded Your Second Season. “The first half of our lives is a season of growth and change,” she says, explaining the name. “During the second season of our lives, we are dealing with different kinds of change. We face an empty nest as our children become adults and leave home. Our parents are aging. We may have lost a partner through divorce or death. We are changing physically. Many of us face retirement. There’s not a lot we can do to stop some of this…and we shouldn’t. It’s our second season, and we need to change with it.” Susan explains that women face many negative stereotypes as they age, which can have a huge effect on mental health. She cites statistics that women over age 45 tend to have higher incidences of depression and that the suicide rate for this age group has increased markedly in the last 20 years. “The more I studied, the more I found that a lot of women feel uncertain, isolated, even invisible,” she shares. “There is a void that surrounds women after a certain age.” Your Second Season aims to be a voice for these women and to ease the transition by helping women become informed and educated so we can “create the next chapter of our
40

life with purpose and fulfillment.” To this end, she established the website yoursecondseason. com, describing it as “an umbrella of resources for your midlife reinvention.” The mission statement, as stated on the site, is: “To develop a strong community of women, experiencing the unique challenges and triumphs of being a woman entering, during and after midlife. To educate and inform women in areas of identity, purpose, physical and mental well-being.” Your Second Season is in the midst of planning a conference aimed toward helping women who are 45 years of age and older. The Women’s Midlife Reinvention Conference is to be held at the Omaha Design Center, at 1505 Cuming Street, on Friday, March 22, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. The schedule includes eight breakout sessions on a variety of topics (participants will choose two). Keynote speakers include menopause specialist Gina Harper-Harrison, MD, with CHI Clinic Women’s Health; Andrea L. “Andee” Hoig, founder and CEO of ALH Publications, Inc.; and Susan Ann Koenig, life coach and attorney with Koenig Dunne. Pop-up booths and vendors will be available throughout the day, as will an assortment of snacks and beverages. A community-building social hour will close the conference. “The latest information on a variety of topics will be presented throughout the day,” notes presenter Lisa Staudt of Relief Care Chiropractic. “This fun-filled day will open your eyes and ignite you onto a path that will help you make your 40s and 50s and beyond be healthy and happy years.” “Your Second Season is designed to inform and educate,” Susan concludes. “No matter what you are going through, you are not alone.” To learn more about Your Second Season or the details of the Women’s Midlife Reinvention Conference, check out yoursecondseason. com or look for their purple umbrella logo on Facebook. As keynote speaker Susan Koenig says, “What this country needs now is the collective wisdom of women who have thrived through life.” Your Second Season brings women together to support each other and share this wisdom. Restoration After a Storm Be Prepared for the Worst
By Anne Yankus
With spring and summer storms just around the corner, it always helps to have a plan in place in case your home suffers storm damage. Consider making contingency plans for different types of damage you might encounter, including pipe damage from the spring thaw, fire or smoke damage, and storm damage from hail or downed trees. We all look forward to spring, so it’s a real disappointment when the first thaw reveals a broken pipe. Older homes are at highest risk for frozen pipes, and you might even discover a problem while the ground is still frozen. If a frozen pipe bursts inside your home, the first things to do are turn off your water and at least part of your electricity. Call a professional to repair or replace the broken portion of the pipe. Then, get started on removing any standing water or damp items left over from the initial pipe burst. Sprinkler systems are vulnerable to damage over the winter, especially the uninsulated above-ground portions. Before you turn the system on each year, inspect all the nozzles and above-ground pipes for cracks caused by expanding ice. cause significant damage to a home. However, the accompanying smoke often causes far more damage. In addition to discoloration and odor, smoke can also cause structural damage and even electrical damage if it permeates walls and ceilings. Wind, water, and hail can cause plenty of trouble, from broken windows to a damaged roof to downed tree limbs. The first thing to keep in mind when checking for damage after a storm is to stay safe. Windows can have obvious damage like shattered panes, but you should also keep an eye out for dents in the flashing (above the window) or framing due to hail or wind. Roof damage is difficult to check for (especially if you don’t have a safe way to look at your roof), but, if your neighbors are getting roof repairs or replacements, you may need one, too. Tree damage is usually straightforward, but cleanup can be challenging. Try calling your city’s public works department—if ›››

a downed limb is blocking a city street, the city might remove it for you. If not, get in touch with a tree trimming service or arborist to clean up and save your damaged trees. Assessing the damage can be daunting, but it’s only the first step. Once you know what needs to be repaired, call your home insurance company, who will typically provide additional information about restoration companies. What is a restoration company, you ask? They’re people who work for you (not your insurance company) to clean up the mess left by a storm or disaster. They also preserve and protect your home so no further damage occurs while you wait for repairs to be completed. Choose a well-respected company for restoration services. It’s advisable to check if they are certified through the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification). It’s also a good idea to have a restoration company picked out before any incident occurs, since timing is crucial after storm damage. Most (but not always all) restoration costs are reimbursable by your home insurance policy. It can be tricky to find a place to live while your home is being repaired. Fortunately, some insurance policies will cover the cost of temporary housing. Terms to look for in your policy are “loss of use,” “additional living expenses,” “fair rental value,” and “civil authority prohibits use,” and whether or not they’re deemed “necessary expenses” or “covered loss.” With all the hassle of storm damage, don’t forget to look for the silver lining! This can be a great time to make the best of a bad situation by replacing broken windows with more energyefficient or low-maintenance models. A good roof can last 20–25 years before it needs to be replaced, but hail and wind damage will cut that time dramatically. It’s best to have a list of repair people on hand before you need to call them, and make sure they’re certified and locally respected. You may need to make a deposit, but avoid any contractor who expects you to pay in full before the work is completed. Be sure to get everything in writing. No one wants to deal with emergency repairs after storm or fire damage, but having a plan in place and professionals ready to call makes it feel like less of an emergency. Start making your list today! Sources for this article included: washingtonpost.com, modernize.com, marylandattorneygeneral.gov, and geico.com. WE

Dental Implants An Alternative to Bridges and Dentures
By Karen Zunke Smith
Many people are unfamiliar with dental implants, but they’re getting more popular all the time. This permanent option for the replacement of missing teeth is becoming preferable to conventional dentures and bridges. More than half a million of these procedures are completed each year, and that number is steadily rising. A dental implant is a metal post or frame, usually composed of titanium, which is surgically positioned into the jawbone, below the gumline. The implant bonds with the natural bone and provides a secure base for attachment of an artificial tooth (called a crown). Once healing has occurred around the implant and it has bonded with the bone (this usually takes some months), the crown is attached with a connector. The procedure can also be done with multiple teeth. In some cases, replacement teeth are grouped into a bridge or denture before being attached. There are several benefits to dental implants over traditional bridges or dentures. Because implants are designed to be permanent, their fit is more secure, and they feel more natural and comfortable than removable bridges or dentures. The health of adjacent natural teeth may be better preserved, since they do not need to be used for attachment (as they would with bridges). Implants are created to custom-match your natural teeth in size, shape, and color. Social situations may be more comfortable with implants, since they do not slip, loosen, or click when talking, laughing, kissing, or eating.
To be considered for dental implants, you must have healthy gums and a jawbone that will support the implant. If your bone is not strong or tall enough, a bone graft may be necessary first. You may need sinus surgery if your sinuses are too close to your upper jaw. The jawbone needs to be fully developed before implants can be used, so implants are not generally an option for patients younger than their late teens. Start the process by talking to your dentist. A small percentage of general dentists can perform dental implant procedures. You most likely will be referred to a specialist, who may be an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, a periodontist, a prosthodontist, or an endodontist. Your regular dentist will likely be able to suggest a specialist to you, but you can also reach out to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (aaid-implant.org) to find credentialed dental implant experts.

Dental implants generally cost more than other methods of tooth replacement. Some insurance companies still do not cover the costs associated with this procedure; others are beginning to recognize the long-term benefits and have started to provide some coverage. If your insurance carrier does not offer coverage, you may be able to receive an allowance to apply toward implants that is equal to the coverage they would provide for a bridge or dentures. Also explore the possibility of financing and payment plans. Maintenance of dental implants and the surrounding gum tissue is similar to the maintenance of natural teeth—it involves good oral hygiene at home and regular visits to the dentist for cleaning and checkups. This will help reduce the risk of complications and may increase the life span of the crowns, which is generally in the range of 10–15 years. As with any surgical procedure, complications can occur. Complications that arise soon after the implant tend to be related to a failure of the bone to heal and integrate with the implant. The Academy of Osseointegration identifies uncontrolled diabetes, low bone density, smoking, poor oral hygiene, and gum disease as possible causes for this. Treatment may involve removing the implant or repairing the surgical site with a bone graft. Another potential complication is infection in the gum tissue, which may need to be treated with antibiotics, more frequent cleanings, or laser therapies. Occasionally, prosthetic complications such as broken screws occur, but these problems are usually easy to repair. The overall success rate of dental implant therapy has been estimated at 98 percent. There are several things you can do to maximize your positive results. The most important action is to do your research ahead of time and ensure that you have chosen an experienced specialist for your implant procedure. If necessary, allow time to evaluate and address medical conditions like diabetes and low bone density before beginning the process. Once the implant is placed, be patient! Allow sufficient time for it to integrate with the bone before moving forward with placement of the connectors and crowns. Once healing has occurred, continue a routine of meticulous oral hygiene and follow recommendations for cleanings and checkups so that you can enjoy the longterm benefits of your dental implants. An Inside Look
Invisible Fence of the Heartland Think Outside the Fence By Jackie Byers
When you visit Invisible Fence of the Heartland, you will be warmly greeted by a shaggy Labradoodle named Chopin, who will probably have a bagel in his mouth. Chopin is the home and office pet of Shelly Jenkins, who manages Invisible Fence® of the Heartland. “Chopin is friends with the entire neighborhood and the perfect mascot,” Shelly notes. Originally a Wyoming girl, Shelly has called Omaha home since 1992. Her husband, Brett Fickler, and his partner, Al Meyers, had worked for Invisible Fence, and they bought the Omaha Invisible Fence dealership in 2002. Brett handles sales, and Al is the dog whisperer who trains clients’ pets to cooperate with the fence. So, how does the invisible fence work? Essentially, the “fence” is a buried wire, and the dog’s collar sounds a tone or emits a stimulation when the dog gets too close to the fence. “The trademarked collars that dogs wear are more compact and lighter than earlier models,” Shelly explains. “They first emit a warning tone as the dog approaches buried wires. Too close, and the dog receives a mild stimulation.” There’s no need to worry that your dog will be harmed by the shock, Shelly notes. It’s very mild—much smaller than the stimulation you might feel if you touched a door knob in dry air. Shelly, Brett, and Al are proud of their product, which was invented in 1973 by Richard Peck. It works so well that, by the time the patents ran out, the name had become the generic for all copycat products. Shelly loves being a local provider of a great product that has the support of such a large organization. “The international organization provides great support, endorsement from veterinarians, supporting exclusive technology, and training,” she says. “Our technology updates constantly! The most recent innovation is GPS technology. For farmers and owners of two or more acres of land, collars and satellite signals are successful where buried wires are impractical.” Shelly declares, “Our product succeeds because it incorporates owner participation to ensure that the pet learns what is necessary. The training incorporates a scientific protocol, so pets know what the tone, stimulation, and visual mean. After Al’s work with a pet, the owner needs to reinforce the training and be sure the collar is on securely and comfortably.” “Because the collar works on battery power, we recommend changing the battery regularly,” Shelly continues. “We send our clients a fresh battery every three months. Proper functioning of the collar is essential, as is proper attention from the owner.” Many people are familiar with the outdoor buried wire that is the original product of Invisible Fence,

but many do not know that the product can also offer help inside the house. “If your dog heads for the trash bin the moment you leave, our fences can surround the trash, keeping your pet away,” Shelly says. “We can keep your pets downstairs, off your white couch, or in any area you specify.” It also works for multiple pets that need to be confined to separate areas of the home. For example, if your pets get into each other’s food, you can mark off separate feeding areas, indoors or outdoors. Another great product by Invisible Fence is their Doorman™ pet door. “Pet doors are great. They provide a great way for pets to go in and out on their own, but they stop access to unwanted visitors,” Shelly says. Their Doorman technology offers a locked pet door. When your pet wants out, the door unlocks and then re-locks automatically. As your pet approaches the door to come back in, the process is repeated. Invisible Fence can help all kinds of pets, Shelly continues, not just cats and dogs. “Invisible Fence has solved problems for a wide assortment of four-legged friends, including rabbits, goats, sheep, a miniature horse, a cow, and even a skunk. Kevin Bacon, a huge pig, had wanderlust and some destructive habits. With an extra-large collar and training, Kevin is now safely controlled, and the environment is protected from his foraging.” Invisible Fence of the Heartland serves all of Nebraska and most of western Iowa. The three technicians travel in fully equipped trucks. “We take care of our customers throughout the installation, training, and service,” Shelly concludes. “We make house calls as needed to ensure safety for pets and peace of mind for owners.” If you need a little peace of mind, call Invisible Fence of the Heartland at 402-330-4000. Shaianne Gerken or Haley Roth will be happy to set up an appointment for you. If you’d like to meet Chopin, drop in at 1223 South 119th Street, just south of the Bagel Bin. The Wall Street Myth What Do Investors Really Need to Know? By George Morgan
The Wall Street myth is the idea that, by studying a company’s fundamentals, investors will be able to make investment decisions that provide better returns than those of the market. This may sound confusing if you’ve been investing for many years; decades ago, this was not a myth. In today’s electronic markets, however, the results of this method of investing have fallen well behind other approaches. In the early 1980s, I was hired by a local brokerage firm as a stockbroker. It was a small firm, so they had no training program—I was on my own to figure out which stocks to recommend to my clients. I approached several of the senior brokers for advice, and they all recommended that I read Ben Graham’s book, “The Intelligent Investor.” The Graham approach was to analyze the financials of each company before investing. The objective was to determine the value of the company and then relate it to the stock price. If the current stock price was less than the value of the underlying company, you would buy the stock. Then, when others discovered the price discrepancy, they would buy the stock, thus driving up the share price. This seemed to make sense, and it worked—for a while. During my early years in the brokerage business, brokers were allowed to do their own research and develop their own buy/sell lists. I began following Lindsey Manufacturing, a small company in northeast Nebraska. My research conclusion was that the value of the company was $15 per share, but the company stock was selling at $8 per share. “Wow!” I thought, and I proceeded to buy the stock for all my clients. Four years later, the stock was still selling at $8 per share. That was when I began to lose faith in the Wall Street way. I began to realize that, in order for this approach to work, a whole lot of other investors needed to come to the same conclusion that I did, and then they had to act on their discovery by buying the same stock that I had purchased. In today’s market, dominated by computer trading and index funds, there is a growing mountain of evidence that Graham’s approach has gone the way of the dinosaurs. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal poked holes in the stock-picking approach. The article reports on the top-performing mutual funds in 2018, but their survey excludes index funds because including them makes their managed funds look even worse. “The whole concept of there being such a thing as a stock pickers’ market belongs in the same category of a man in a red suit who descends your chimney and leaves gifts,” the article notes, pointing out that all of the top funds are in this category for
50

the first and, probably, the last time. The article concludes that “luck plays the dominant role in oneyear returns.” Wall Street’s pronouncement that they deserve big bucks for picking stocks continues to be a myth. To understand what is going on, you need to have a clear definition of an investor. An investor is a person who makes investment decisions based upon financial and economic research. This definition covers mutual fund managers, stockbrokers, and an extremely small number of individual investors. These groups control over 90 percent of the total value of the market, so you might think that they could hold some sway over stock prices. However, the real issue is not who controls the assets but rather who makes the trades. During the last few weeks of 2018, we experienced massive market swings. During those days, 85 percent of the trades were done by computers. These machines don’t care about the fundamentals of a company; they only care that they can make trades in the 12 different markets where they can buy it for less than they can sell it. At the beginning of the day, the computer traders don’t own any stocks; at the end of the day, they don’t own any stocks. Against all of those computer-based trades, there is no way that the human investors who made trades based upon a company’s fundamentals could determine stock prices. As a footnote to this, the Wall Street Journal article quoted a number of well-respected mutual fund managers. The only one who reported a successful year was Kathleen Murphy of Fidelity Funds. She reported a dramatic increase in business because Fidelity lowered the fees on their index funds and began to advertise them. No matter what myths you used to believe, today’s bottom line remains the same: Ignore the financial media and buy index funds in your 401(k). Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. Pre-Planned Funeral Arrangements A Final Gift for Your Loved Ones
By Linda Barnes
Most people do not particularly enjoy contemplating their own death and funeral arrangements. Some difficult conversation now, however, can save your loved ones a lot of stress later. The death of a family member is a highly emotional and stressful event. Having to make arrangements without any direction from the deceased just amplifies the anxiety and can result in poor decisions. Surveys show that 66 percent of people would like to plan their own funeral or memorial but that less than half of them have actually done so. The inclination to put it off or even put it out of our minds is understandably strong. Pre-planning, though, benefits everyone involved. Those who pre-plan feel more at ease after making informed, thoughtful decisions about the arrangements they wish to have. Family members are relieved to know that many decisions are already made so they won’t have to wing it under stressful conditions. Grief is difficult enough without any added burdens. Pre-planning involves such things as deciding on a final resting place, choosing cremation or embalming, and selecting a type of service and a specific funeral home. Including family members in the planning process may feel awkward, but it’s a great idea. Some financial benefits may result, as well. A final resting place is important and may be an easy decision. For example, spouses may want to be together. However, the
logistics may be difficult if there was more than one marriage or if great physical distances are involved. If you and your spouse would like a traditional burial and want to be together, planners advise that you purchase a burial plot ahead of time. Choosing between cremation and embalming can be challenging, but more and more people are opting for cremation. It now exceeds traditional burial in the United States and is expected to reach more than 70 percent by 2030. The top reasons given for choosing cremation include the lower cost and environmental concerns. Methods for handling of ashes are numerous. My brother chose to have his scattered on the family farm near a little stream. A small plaque on a young tree marks the spot. Fortunately, he had shared his wishes with us before he died. An elderly uncle asked to have an urn with his ashes buried in a cemetery plot with a small headstone. Churches and

cemeteries often have a columbarium with compartments for urns. Engraved plaques memorialize names and dates. Choosing the type of service or celebration is perhaps easier. Some will choose a traditional religious service. Others prefer an informal gathering. This is a choice that should fit the deceased’s unique personality and wishes. Hobbies, families, or sports teams are favorite themes. A letter of instruction gives directions to your survivors, who will be handling your arrangements. It doesn’t have the same legal implications of a will, but it makes your wishes clear. You should discuss your instructions with loved ones and give them written copies. This works better than just outlining your funeral wishes in your will, since wills are often read only after any funeral or service. Bank boxes are secure but might be problematic, as the bank may be closed when arrangements need to be made. The question of pre-paying is a separate issue from pre-planning—that is, you can pre-plan, pre-pay, or both. If pre-payment is something you’d like to do, choose a reputable funeral home and work with a funeral director. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulates funeral providers to protect consumers. The FTC requires that funeral providers have a general price list with the current cost of goods and services. They must disclose other information, as well, that helps you make informed decisions. If you fund a funeral in advance, you’re entering into a legal contract, so be sure you fully understand the terms of the agreement. Besides pre-paying, several options exist for making sure the cost of your service is covered. Trusts, insurance, or CDs are possible sources of funding. Life insurance can be earmarked for funeral expenses, as can savings. Having a trust strictly for funeral expenses does not affect Medicaid eligibility. When pre-paying with a funeral provider, know your state’s requirements and whether the provider meets those conditions. Ask whether the contract can be cancelled and what happens if you move or the funeral provider goes out of business. Specify whether family may make changes after your death. Try not to be so specific in the details of your service or celebration that loved ones may have difficulty achieving your vision. The idea is to make it easier for loved ones by looking ahead and being pro-active while you are able. Sources for this article included: consumer. ftc.gov, aarp.org, and nfda.org. WE March 2019

Peak Performance
Selling Your House? Properties in Tip-Top Shape Bring Top Dollar
By Leslie Byrne
Even in a seller’s market, you need to prepare your home before you list it. You may need to make some upgrades! If you’re seriously thinking about listing your house but have not started the process, have a realtor preview your home. Realtors see the inside of homes every day, and they know what is currently in demand with buyers. They will see things you don’t notice in your home and can really help your house show well. Just like you, your home only gets one chance to make a first impression. I’m talking about curb appeal! Start by decluttering the yard and front porch. Hire a landscaping company to prune, clean, and mulch. Not sure what else needs to be done? Take some photos of your house from all sides. This is a great way to find what needs to be improved. Outdoor living spaces are very popular, so that’s a good place to buff up before you list your home. Don’t forget the less exciting improvements like a new roof, energy-efficient windows, new siding or exterior paint, or additional attic insulation. Most buyers consider what will need to be replaced soon when they’re making an offer. In 2018, luxury basements were one of the upgrades that helped sellers get the prices they asked for. Buyers are not just looking for a place to store their old furniture—they want a space to entertain. When it’s done right, a basement upgrade brings a high rate of return.
There are many ways to make your home more tempting to buyers without spending a lot of money. Greet potential buyers with a new front door or garage door. If the existing doors are in good condition, consider upgrading the hardware and repainting for a fresh look. The kitchen is important to just about every buyer, but that doesn’t mean you need a major renovation. If the cabinets are outdated but solid, consider the lower-cost options of painting, refacing, or even simply updating the hardware. The same applies in the bathroom. If you’re planning to paint anything, hire a professional painter. The time and headache you’ll save is worth the cost. Make sure your floors look good, too! Refinish scratched wood floors and replace that old, dirty carpet. Upgrades to lighting or plumbing should always be done by licensed professionals. Even for less technical upgrades,
A Few Words From One of Our Advertisers: “We have gotten a ton of business from our advertising with Women’s Edition. It’s insane the number of calls we get from the ad. you should still consider hiring a pro. Professionals know how to do the job right, they know what permits are needed, and they can likely do the work in a fraction of the time it would take you to do it. When upgrades are done well, buyers notice…and they also notice when they’re not done well. Professional work will help you get a good offer, which can cover the cost of hiring the pros. Ask friends for recommendations and check online for contractors with excellent reviews. A home pre-inspection can cost several hundred dollars, but it can be very helpful to know in advance what might show up on the buyer’s inspection. You’ll have the opportunity to fix big issues like radon, mold, or lead paint, as well as little things that might cause negotiation problems or lead to delays in closing. A pre-inspection can also help you and your realtor choose the right asking price for your home. Finding the right realtor is vital to the personal and time-consuming experience of selling your home. Interview several realtors to find one whose personality works well with your own. Ask lots of questions! How many homes in your area have they sold in the past few years? What is their commission structure? How long do you have to list your house with them? How much of the process do they handle personally? How accessible are they? What marketing do they plan to use? Will they hold open houses? Will they stage your home? Don’t be afraid to ask for names and numbers of their past clients. It’s best to work with someone who has a lot of experience selling houses in your price range or area. If you have a modest home and your realtor specializes in luxury homes, you may not get the expert advice you need about the type of buyers you want to attract. Look at the names of realtors selling homes in your area, ask for referrals from friends and neighbors, and wait until you find a realtor who really connects with you. With the right updates, the right realtor, and the right asking price, selling your home doesn’t have to be the headache you might be expecting. Let the professionals handle the job while you get out there to do the fun part—looking for your new home! Collision Repair Get Your Vehicle Back in Shape By Brennan Hallock
The wet roads of winter and spring can make for dangerous driving. On average, 70 percent of weather-related accidents occur on wet pavement—rain, snow, and ice can impair visibility and make braking difficult and unpredictable. If your vehicle ends up damaged in a collision, you need to know how to get your vehicle repaired right so you can get back on the road. It is important to find a repair shop you trust (if you don’t already have one). When you file a claim, your insurance company will likely recommend a repair shop. Insurance companies negotiate deals with local auto body shops for lower labor rates and discounted parts, and they hold these shops to a certain set of standards. Insurance-recommended repair shops are also often required to provide certain warranties. This means that your chances are good that the repair shop your insurance company recommends is reputable and will do a good job. Because they have deals with local shops, insurance companies may discourage vehicle owners from shopping around. However, you are not legally required to go with the shop that your insurance company chooses. If you don’t feel confident about it, you should absolutely shop around for a better price or a higher quality of service. As a matter of fact, it’s a good idea to shop around a little whether you like the recommended shop or

not—it never hurts to get multiple estimates. Deciding what questions to ask when you show up at an auto body shop can be confusing. You know you want the issue repaired right, for a fair price, but how do you determine whether a particular shop can get the job done? It’s helpful to bring a list of questions to the shop and write down their answers. Here are some questions you should be sure to ask: • How will I be updated about my car’s status (and how often)? Ask if they will send text or email messages with updates or if you can view them online. • What kind of warranty comes with the repair? Ask how long it lasts and what it covers. • Does the repair shop provide loaner vehicles? If you only have one vehicle, it can be important to have a loaner while yours is being repaired. If you have kids, the loaner will need to

be big enough to accommodate them. • How long will the repair take? You need to know how long you’re likely to be without your vehicle, especially if loaners are not available. • Is your car insured while in the shop? Ask if they have fire and theft insurance in case your car is damaged, destroyed, stolen, or burglarized while it’s in their shop. • Will the paint match? If the shop is replacing or repainting part of your car’s body, you want an exact match for your car’s paint. • Does the auto body shop have any certifications? Certifications such as I-CAR (Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair) and ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) can be indicators that the shop is reputable and trustworthy. • Will they put everything in writing? It is important to receive a written estimate and an itemized bill. This will avoid disputes and ensure that you receive what you are promised. If the damage is minor, repair can be pretty simple. Small dents and scratches can be repaired quickly and inexpensively, especially if the paint wasn’t damaged. You may even be able to wait at the shop while the technicians fix your vehicle. Small shops are typically less expensive, but if your car is a high-end
model, you should take it to a dealership. One recent development in the collision repair industry is the eco-friendly body shop. In an attempt to be more environmentally responsible, some body shops are taking steps like using eco-friendly body paints and recycled parts, utilizing paintless dent repair as much as possible, purchasing products in bulk rather than in small plastic containers, using biodegradable cleaners, and ensuring proper disposal of potentially hazardous materials. This development, while it does not have a major impact on the consumer at the point of service, does bring about a more conscientious approach to caring for your vehicle. While the repair will look the same as a repair from a different shop, you can drive away knowing you made a small but positive impact on preventing pollution and waste. Even after the ice melts, spring is likely to bring plenty of wet, slippery pavement and dicey driving conditions. Ask around now for recommendations on local auto body shops that your friends and family have used. You want to be ready in case your car is the next one that needs to be repaired. The Good Life
Landscape Function and Design in 2019 Spring Awakening By Janette Calabro
Spring awakens the spirit, triggering dreams of jewel-colored flowers and festive outdoor gatherings. Creating the perfect outdoor living space is beneficial for physical and emotional wellness. Let’s take a look at some landscape and hardscape trends for 2019. Whether you’re looking for a simple yard with traditional charm or a whimsical escape adorned with water features and lush plants, spring inspires us to bring the indoors—well, outdoors. Inside-out is trending. Staycations are also on the rise, adding to the need for the advice of professional landscapers to make our yards worth vacationing in. As the grass whispers for attention, so do the possibilities for living space improvement. For some of us, low maintenance and simplicity are priorities, letting us spend our outdoor time enjoying the yard instead of working on it. To minimize fuss, choose native plants that are accustomed to growing in your area. Slow-growing dwarf shrubs minimize pruning and can be used for borders or small hedges. Mulch is another timesaver, preventing weeds and holding moisture in the soil. Planting largescale groundcover or dense perennials promises a garden that will flourish without much attention. Plant hardiness zones established by the USDA help determine the right climate for your shrubs, trees, and flower beds. Nurseries recommend planting trees that shed in an ornamental bed where fallout blends into leaf litter. For example, the dogwood tree, hardy in zones 5 through 9, boasts six-inch flowers in the spring and strawberry-like fruits into autumn. Flowering shrubs can be great for showy color. Azalea shrubs explode into a rainbow. Use the small varieties to line a walkway or larger shrubs for hedges. Dress up a shady garden with a hedge of purple rhododendron. The double blue lilac remains a fragrant favorite, but the re-blooming dwarf pink lilac is all the rage for 2019. Be sure to consider the stunning, low-maintenance re-blooming mountain hydrangea, along with the amethyst-colored dwarf butterfly bush. Shake up spring design with the best new perennials. Choose purple leaf coral bells, heat-tolerant indigo blue catmint, or bright pink phlox for a fragrant statement in front of your border. Best annual? Try lemon coral sedum, a worry-free succulent. The newest trends in outdoor living spaces are in hot pursuit of indoor designs, trending toward smoother textures and brighter colors. Modular pavers continue their popularity, but this year will bring more pops of color sprinkled throughout, with vibrant hues of coral or other colors in random patterns. For the artist in each of us, a multi-tiered wall showcasing a sunken garden coaxes visions of serene paintings. Add soft lighting to highlight unique wall qualities.

Outdoor lighting is a must for illuminating your oasis after dark. As the sun washes the springtime sunset with a golden glow, it’s time to amp up outside. LED lighting increases safety right away and saves money and energy in the long term. Batterypowered and solar lights allow light to be placed anywhere, transcending boundaries from inside to out, illuminating focal points. Up-light a favorite tree or shrub with solar-powered warm white lights, or stagger lighting from side to side for a sense of balance along garden pathways. As focus on spiritual wellness increases, so does the need for integrating meditation space with a Zen garden or a tranquil water feature. The soothing sounds of a water fountain bring beauty and mental clarity, along with drowning out unwanted noise from the neighbors. Add a fire pit or fireplace and relax under the stars—marshmallows recommended. For many people, cooking has moved outdoors, and that simple slab of concrete with a portable grill needs an update. Full-scale outdoor kitchens are decked out with every utility and convenience used indoors. Place some outdoor furniture around a state-of-the-art grill and bar to create a comfortable gathering space. Where outdoor smokers and pizza ovens linger, so will good conversation and tasty meals. Look for sealed and treated furniture to avoid mildew and fading. Add a hammock or swing chair, and you’re well on your way to complete outdoor transformation. Before you dive in, remember to consult the professionals. After all, landscaping and hardscaping increase the value of your home…but not if they look like you tried to tackle a job you couldn’t handle. A strategic approach to your project usually requires an expert opinion from a landscape contractor or a gardener for help with plants and flowers. Landscape designers and architects help plan, design, and manage projects so you end up with your desired outcome. Read online reviews, ask around for personal referrals, and always check licensing credentials. It’s time to get excited about your outdoor space. Let the magic begin! Next Millennium Books and Gifts
Magical Products and Guidance By Emilee Lindley
When you enter Next Millennium Books and Gifts on 93rd and Maple, you can feel the warmth of the people inside. “We greet people with a hearty hello, ask them what we can help with, and hope that they tell us why they’ve come,” says store owner Cindy Odorizzi. “We like to get them talking, build trust that we can help, and give people a sense of community.” Next Millennium isn’t just a bookstore—it’s a place where people come to improve themselves in mind, body, and spirit. “We are metaphysical bartenders, giving warm hug experiences to all who enter,” Cindy notes with a smile. They hope to help you on whatever path you have chosen in this lifetime. The dream of Next Millennium began in 1996 as a card table with some rocks for sale. Cindy’s husband, Charlie, was a hypnotherapist. When they began to collaborate, their side jobs became an Omaha institution. They opened a storefront on 72nd Street, then doubled in size and moved to their current location, where they have been for 12 years. Cindy grew up with a psychic mom, she says. “She always knew what I was doing and said that a little bird told her…there was no little bird.” Growing up with incense lit in the house and séances at the table could be the reason that Cindy grew into the owner of a hub for spiritual and mindful people to gather. This store is somewhere you can go to begin small rituals that will enhance your earthly experience every day. In this space, you might learn to enjoy nature in ways you didn’t before or even unlock your full potential as a mindful and deep thinker. Next Millennium sells more than books. They sell tarot cards, crystals, jewelry, candles, incense, sacred plants, local art and imports, and so much more. To find the rocks that they sell in the store, Cindy and her staff head to different crystal shows around the country. “There is a big show in Denver, and we are planning to head to the show in Tucson in the future,” she says. They also work with experienced private dealers. “You have to really know someone in order to have them sell you rocks from the back of their truck,” Cindy acknowledges. “We have rock guys who have been in the business for a long time, and we’ve known them for many years.” Those who are seeking some sort of guidance in their lives should stop by Next Millennium to meet with people who are reading tarot or providing their own version of guidance in the store. This gives
customers an opportunity to learn what may be going on inside themselves. “People come to us when they are facing challenges in their lives or have just gone through major life changes,” Cindy says. “Maybe they are seeking change, or maybe their child is in need of help.” There are many reasons that a person might want a reading done—hearing an outside perspective on what’s happening within us is a powerful way to gain clarity. One of the guides at New Millennium is Papa Newt. He uses bones to receive messages and then transfers that knowledge to you. The way the bones land after they are thrown shows him what the universe may be trying to tell you. Another guide at Next Millennium, DreAnna, reads tarot to help people unlock their full potential on this planet. It feels otherworldly to receive information in this way, and it may feel strange the first time you get these kinds of messages. It always comes as a surprise when a reader knows something about you that you can’t explain! When you’re looking for guidance or what you might call “a sign,” what better way to connect with these messages than through a compassionate reader at a trusted hometown shop like Next Millennium? Of course, don’t forget to check out the book selection. You may find that you are missing some things in your daily life that are key to living as the best version of yourself. Wherever you are in your life and whatever guidance you seek, the people at Next Millennium would like to be your friends on this journey. They encourage you to tap into everything they have to offer at this special place in the heart of Omaha. Visit Next Millennium Books and Gifts at 3141 North 93rd Street or call 402-393-1121. Italian Holiday? Head South!
By Jackie Williams
If you’re planning an Italian vacation but aren’t sure where to go, you’re in luck. I have quite a few friends who are from Italy (or have lived there), and I want to share with you their personal recommendations for an Italian holiday. Do you want to spend your trip learning about ancient history? Do you want somewhere to just relax and walk around on your own? Do you seek an outdoor adventure or a luxury getaway? It’s time to choose your dates, find your travel partners, and get ready to pack! Wouldn’t it be lovely to explore all of Italy on holiday? That sounds amazing, but it would take several months of travel to see the whole country. For shorter trips, it’s best to explore Italy by region. Which region should you choose first? All of my Italian friends tell me the same thing: “Go to the South!” Let’s start with Naples (Napoli). The name means “new city” because the current city was built over an ancient one. You can still see plenty of evidence of the old city, both aboveground and in the tunnels and catacombs. The environment is unique, and it’s crowded— Italians and international travelers alike love to vacation in Naples. My friend Martin describes Naples as “old architecture, full of interesting buildings that contain hidden messages. Homes hang-
ing on the hills, antique libraries, shops, restaurants—keeping the look, taste, and feeling of thousands of years ago. Cuisine is still simple, original. It’s like jumping into another world.” When you visit Naples, Martin advises, take the time to enjoy just walking around. The Street of Shepherds is famous for its handmade art, including exquisite wood carvings of nativity scenes. Visit some of the old churches and see cherished art like the marble sculpture Cristo Velato (Veiled Christ). Walk the straight path of Spaccanapoli, the street designed to go from the king’s residence straight out of the city, now lined with antique shops and monuments. Taking an organized tour is a great way to see the city, especially on your first trip. You can also buy or download a guidebook and go at your own pace, resting and eating wherever you choose. Of course, make sure you are not on a diet when visiting ›››

Italy, where you will be faced with croissants that are “exploding with Nutella.” Christmas is the most popular time to visit Naples, and it’s a more expensive and crowded time to go. Perhaps it’s so popular because of the traditional fried pizza on December 24th? Naples has a big harbor, which makes it easy to travel to nearby islands by boat. I’m sure you’ve heard of Capri, famous for the Blue Grotto, visitors on yachts, and exclusive hotels and shopping. Walk or take the funicular to the highest peak, Monte Solaro, for gorgeous views of Naples, Vesuvius, and the Amalfi Coast. Another tourist destination is the island of Ischia. Full of coves, beaches, and unspoiled landscapes, Ischia has over 300 spas, thanks to its hot springs. It’s a great spot to unwind. The southern Italian city of Caserta is worth a visit just to see the Royal Palace. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a real treasure. You can tour the apartments, the park, and beautiful English gardens. Let’s talk about the next Italian city I’ll be visiting: Calabria! Located at the toe of the boot, the area combines beautiful Mediterranean seas and mountainous regions. The culture is different here than in other parts of Italy, and Greek influences are easy to see in the ancient ruins. My friends Aneta and Daniel have a family home here that they rent on Airbnb. “We are in the beautiful mountains,” they say of their cozy villa, “where you can drive 30 minutes down to one beach or 30 minutes down the other side to another beautiful beach.” Aneta has many recommendations for places to see in Calabria. “There are a lot of beautiful places here,” she says. “The most touristic are Tropea, Capo Vaticano, Pizzo Calabro, Reggio Calabria… these are near the beaches. We also have beautiful mountains called Parco Nazionale della Sila, with forests, lakes, and the biggest sequoia in Europe, at Pino Laricio. At this park, you can eat very tasty food, visit different museums, and snowboard or ski in the winter.” Calabria is a gorgeous place where you can swim, dive, or sail in the crystal blue Mediterranean waters. The nearby scenic mountains are ready for you to hike, bike, and walk the nature trails. There you have it! Head south for a little something different when visiting Italy. Enjoy a vacation where you can relax as much as you want, enjoy nature as much as you want, and have as many cappuccinos, pizzas, and gelatos as you want. Ciao! Enterprising Ideas
CLC Landscapes Professional Help for Your Yard By Marge Shoemaker
As the weather gets warmer, we are reminded that spring is just around the corner and that it’s time to get our outdoor spaces ready for the season. Early spring, when the temperature is comfortable and the insect population has not yet bloomed, is a great time to be outdoors. Once winter’s debris is cleaned up, you can determine what can be salvaged from last year’s plantings and what you have to replace. If you’re planning a major project like new landscaping or establishing an outdoor living area, it’s time to call in the professionals at CLC Landscapes. The business now known as CLC Landscapes was established in 1992. Current president Andrew Gangestad grew up in the Omaha metro area. Like many teenagers, he earned money by mowing lawns and shoveling snow. Later, he helped his dad with more extensive lawn care and the maintenance of sprinkler systems. Andrew’s developing interest in lawn care led him to study horticulture at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. “Dad was a big help in keeping up my accounts while I was in school,” Andrew recalls. “I think it was his way of easing me into the business.” After graduation, Andrew did join his father’s lawn care business, Corporate Lawn Care, which provided quality lawn and landscaping services to residential and commercial customers in the Omaha area. As the business grew to provide more than lawn care, Andrew decided to change the name to CLC Landscapes. The firm now offers a variety of services in addition to thorough and professional landscaping. Irrigation is one of their specialties, whether you need regular watering for plants or a remedy for soggy areas in the yard. They also offer hardscaping, including retaining walls, fire pits, concrete work, patios, and landscape lighting—pretty much any outdoor structure you can imagine. Of course, they also offer regular lawn maintenance on convenientto-you schedules. You may be surprised to hear that winter is just as busy as summer for the staff at CLC Landscapes. “Because landscaping can be so seasonal and weatherdependent, we expanded our services into snow and ice removal,” Andrew explains. These services are primarily available for commercial customers who need their large parking lots cleared of snow and ice as a safety measure for their clients and staff. An added bonus of expanding services is that it keeps the CLC Landscapes crews busy year-round…a rewarding proposition. “Because our guys know they will be kept busy, we’ve managed to build a solid staff,” Andrew points out. “There’s very little turnover, and we know who works best together. It makes for a more familial feeling.”

The customeroriented philosophy at CLC Landscapes Andrew Gangestad, owner was established by Andrew’s father. “Dad knew it was vitally important to really listen to customers in order to determine how to best fulfill their dream landscape or project,” Andrew recalls. “We tailor each job to suit the individual and take the time to develop services, programs, and solutions to meet specific needs.” Andrew and his staff are licensed by the City of Omaha and certified for work with retaining walls and pavers. “Some areas have different licensing standards, and we make sure we can follow those standards before we accept a job.” CLC Landscapes is bonded and insured to handle most any project, and they know who to call if they need a hand. “If something is outside of our expertise, such as hooking up gas lines for fire pits or plumbing for water features, we work with professionals in those areas,” Andrew notes. “We coordinate our schedules so the client only has me or that crew chief to work with.” Andrew advises everyone considering home improvement to do their homework. Go to trade shows to see what products are available. Having an idea of where you want to end up provides a starting point for conversations with contractors. Then, get multiple quotes. Vet your contractors thoroughly by asking questions and checking references. Be sure to get details in writing. “Even slight changes should be discussed and put in writing,” Andrew says. “There shouldn’t be any surprises to either party.” The residential services at CLC Landscapes are structured to cater to the personal needs of each homeowner, providing timely and professional installation and maintenance. “Your image is our business” is the motto at CLC Landscapes, and maintaining that standard is how they maintain their client base. “Our business is referral-based,” Andrew concludes simply. “If our clients aren’t satisfied, we won’t get referrals.” For more information, including photos of past projects, check out CLC Landscapes online at clclandscapesinc.com and on Facebook. The Green Thumb
In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb? The Harbinger of Spring By Sharon Knierim
Warmer temperatures are finally melting away winter’s snow and ice. Though February has come and gone, its tempests can often stretch into the month of March. Icy air on March nights can result in glistening mornings. These beautiful “gifts” from Mother Nature are very destructive to plants. Basically, there is nothing a gardener can do but hope for warm sunshine to arrive as soon as possible. We’re all familiar with the old saying, “If March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb,” but that idea is slightly less than reliable. More reliable (and hopeful) is a line from an Alfred Tennyson poem: “Now fades the last long streak of snow.” Something is always astir in March, and it’s typically very subtle. Be alert to the gradual (sometimes, very gradual) thawing and warming taking place. This quiet process is most noticeable to people like gardeners who are waiting to start digging and planting. Be patient—the length of the day is quietly but steadily increasing. Although it may not seem like it, March is truly the harbinger of spring, a month of promise and renewed hope. Perennials have begun their annual vertical journey to the sunshine. Bulbs begin to show bloom, and red maple trees begin to hint at their own particular shade of color. Along with returning songbirds, the planning and proper planting of spring-blooming flowers is an important reminder that spring is just around the corner. If you plan to incorporate shrubs that bloom early in the spring, intersperse them with later-blooming species. Although these early bloomers are exciting and vivid, their bloom time is typically only one to two weeks long, leaving them bland throughout the rest of spring and summer. Planting them all in one group won’t lead to long-lasting visual interest. Instead, tuck them in where they can be backup shrubbery for later blossoms, giving your garden continuing color all season long. Another good reason for planting shrubbery is the fact that these species do not require high levels of care like weeding and hoeing—tasks that are vastly unpopular in summer’s sometimes brutal heat and humidity. Flowering quince is a good choice, though many quinces are a little prickly. Their bare twigs exhibit showy red or scarlet blooms in the shape of roses. Sometimes the flowers are white and double! Typical mature height is four to six feet, and they can be easily encouraged into a hedge if several are planted in a row. The quince is very hardy and is willing to grow in almost every type of soil. Although the flowering quince is supposed to bloom only in early spring, our quince must have an identity problem because it often blooms throughout the summer. Who could forget the dependable forsythia for the first bold colors of spring blooms? Brought from China in 1833, this hybrid shrub is between five and nine feet

in height. Its lovely arching branches are completely covered in golden flowers, which are appropriate for cutting and displaying indoors. Many of us have gardens that don’t seem much bigger than a postage stamp, but even the smallest garden can bring light after a long winter. When we think of spring blooms and spring color, our mind takes us to bulbs, which are a wonderful and logical choice. If space is lacking, try planting one, two, or three bulbs here and there within an already planted flower bed or border. Bulbs can also be grown in containers and moved about for more effect. When it comes to fall-planted bulbs that bring early spring color, a personal favorite is the netted iris. This tiny iris from the Caucasus can live for many years in rock gardens or in garden soils. It is a diminutive plant with more fragrance than its larger iris cousins. The netted iris often blooms in the snow without any problem. Barely five inches tall, care must be taken not to confuse its delicate leaves with garlic or young onion plants when weeding. Of course, there is always the tulip for bright and stunning color. In tulips, there are so many heights, leaf types, and blooms available, the choices are staggering. If possible, purchase a variety of bulbs that have different bloom times so that you will have more color and dynamics. March is finally here. Get outside and enjoy those early signs of spring. You’ll love it! Editor’s Note: Sharon Knierim has been a Master Gardener since 2003 through Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. Hobby Riders and Serious Competitors Equestrian Sports for Everyone By Brie Christensen
Whether you’re a serious competitor or just in it for the love of horses, equestrian sports provide many opportunities for structured riding. Various disciplines are available for horses of all breeds and for riders of all skill levels. Once you find a variety you love, equestrian sporting can last a lifetime, for you and the horse! The United States Equestrian Federation’s list of international disciplines includes dressage, endurance, combined driving, jumping, eventing, reining, vaulting, and para-equestrian. There’s something for everyone! Dressage is one of the three equestrian Olympic disciplines. The sport includes nine progressive levels of competition to showcase all levels of training. As such, it is open to riders of all skill levels and horses of all breeds. Endurance, as you might guess from the name, consists of long-distance riding on various terrain and at varying altitudes. The sport tests the fitness and stamina of the horse and the discipline and horsemanship skills of the rider. Arabian horses are well known for dominating in this sport. Jumping is one of the most popular equestrian sports of all—and perhaps the most entertaining to watch, as we remember each time the summer Olympics roll around. This sport involves jumping over a series of obstacles, and horses and ponies of all sizes and breeds compete at various levels. Eventing is something of a horse triathlon—it includes the events of dressage, cross-country, and show jumping. The three events are often contested over three days. In combined driving, one, two, or four horses lead a carriage through three phases: driven dressage, marathon, and a cones course. The discipline tests the driver’s ability as well as the speed, athleticism, and obedience of the horses. There are no breed specifications or required skill levels for this sport. The exciting-to-watch equestrian sport of reining developed from the skills required of horses and human workers at livestock ranches. The required movements include things like small slow circles, large fast circles, 360-degree spins, and sliding stops. Vaulting is an ancient sport that is, understandably, referred to as gymnastics on horseback. Riders are judged on the gymnastics routines they perform on the horse, and the horses are judged on their consistency of gait, among other things. Para-equestrian sports, which include dressage and driving, provide competitive opportunities for athletes with physical disabilities that render them unable to compete against able-bodied athletes. Riders are grouped by functional ability to ensure a fair competition. If none of the these has sparked your interest, you might consider some of the national disciplines identified by the United States Equestrian Federation. They include English pleasure discipline, parade horse

competition, roadster, carriage pleasure driving, and Western equestrianism. The English pleasure discipline showcases the refined manners and technique of both horse and rider. Horses must exhibit excellent obedience, and movements must be smooth throughout transitions from one gait to the next. In parade horse competition, horses and drivers are also mainly judged on manners and beauty. American saddlebreds, Morgans, and hackneys are ideal for this discipline, but any breed is welcome. In the roadster sport, horses are judged on their form at varying speeds. Antique vehicles or replicas are used in carriage pleasure driving, and it is one of the older and more popular of the equestrian sports. The Western equestrian discipline comes from the daily tasks required of a working ranch horse. As such, American stock breeds are popular for these competitions. Western dressage focuses on things like usefulness, rideability, safety, calm, and steadiness. In Western reining and horsemanship, riders are expected to exhibit control and adaptability. Children who work with horses learn many vital life skills, including patience, compassion for another living being, responsibility, and sportsmanship. If introduced to horses early on and given proper direction, children may find a lifelong passion for horses. To become truly successful, both horse and rider must be properly trained. Various schools offer lessons and advice for people of all ages who are just starting out with horses or who are more seasoned riders. Communication is the first step to horseback riding, and that involves getting the horse’s attention. It’s critical for riders to teach their horses a language based on their relative body positions. Riding involves a lot of grit and physical strength, so it’s important for riders to remain physically healthy and fit outside of their equestrian training. Specific training with the horse can take place at the stable or riding school. Whether you are just starting out or are already proficient, whether you are riding just for pleasure or hope to compete at the Olympic level, one thing remains true about equestrian sports—there’s something out there for all riders. Positive Perspective
Put the Phone Down! The Death of Conversation The other morning, I came up with a new description for my iPhone—it’s my adult pacifier. Yep! I had become so dependent on my cell phone that I got agitated, annoyed, and irritated when I didn’t have it readily available to me. I was ready to have a tantrum! Ouch. That is one ugly thing to realize about yourself. “The cell phone has become the adult’s transitional object, replacing the toddler’s teddy bear for comfort and a sense of belonging.” —Margaret Heffernan I remember, years ago, when I first became aware of how intrusive the electronic age had become in our lives. I had my family over—my kids, my brothers, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews. There were 12 of us sitting and “talking” in my living room. All of a sudden, the room became quiet…very quiet. I looked up, and all but one of us were on some sort of an electronic device. I admit, I was appalled. I called everyone out, and we had a long discussion about it. Most of the group argued the importance of staying on top of what was happening—the latest alert about a news story, or a text that had come from a friend. I pointed out the death of conversation! “My imagination functions much better when I don’t have to speak to people.”—Patricia Highsmith

Hmm. I think I would label that “delusional thinking.” What was really disturbing to me the other morning was that I realized I had fallen into the same ugly trap. So, what to do? Stop it. Simply stop it. “The fishing is a great relief for me. When I’m out, there’s no cell phone ringing. I’m out there fishing with bears. I’m in the middle of God’s country, catching tons of fish. I just absolutely love it.”—Rick Barry My brother, Tom, loves to go fishing. He shared with me that he had “unplugged” the last time he went up north to fish. He owns his own business, and so the demands on him are very high. When he came back, he told me that it was a great fishing trip. He didn’t brag about the fish he caught. He bragged about the decompression that came from not being tied to his cell phone. I haven’t gone fishing in years. (I am hoping to change that this spring!) That doesn’t mean I can’t throw my pacifier out the window once in a while. I now put my phone in my purse when I go to dinner. I lay it upside down when I’m having a conversation with someone I love…or even like! I’ve cut the cord, and my life is better. Join me? WE
