Loving Springtime, Loving Mom The earth has come alive again…I love it! I was looking outside my kitchen window a few minutes ago. The perennials were peeking their heads out of the ground. I heard a lawn mower coming from my neighbor’s house. Dogs were barking. I find myself so appreciative of being alive! When the earth starts waking up, I literally feel a “shift” in my soul. As I write this, we have just come off multiple days of gloom. The temperature has not been terrible, but it has been so GRAY! After a solid week of this, drivers were being less than courteous, workers in the stores were short-tempered, and Omaha felt like… not Omaha! I love my city. I can’t stand the winters, but I love the rest of the year. But most of all? I love the people who live here. We are used to getting lots of sunshine here in this great town. When it goes away for too long, it’s almost as if we don’t know how to handle it. My sister, Pam, lives in Portland, Oregon. She has lived there for years. She has to deal with this kind of weather for the bulk of her year. As the days wore on over the last couple of weeks, I would call her and tell her, “I don’t know how you do it!” I don’t know if it’s the lack of vitamin D or what. All I know is that I’m so happy to see the weather turning. May also brings us Mother’s Day. It is a bittersweet day for me, as my mom (Anne) passed away 24 years ago. The last few weeks, she has been on my mind a lot. I’m not sure why. I had a great mom. She was a Pisces. She was the best listener I’ve ever met. She was kind. She was also very strong. My mom helped me through some of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make in my life. She was such a hard worker. She had six kids in 10 years. She always took such great care of her brood! I think I am one of the luckiest women in the world because I had such a great mom. If you are fortunate enough to still have your mom around, make this her very special day. I listen to friends my age whose moms are still living. Some of them are complaining about their moms…about how needy they are. I so wish my mom was here so I could take care of her. She took care of me. I wish I could return the favor. Happy Mother’s Day to all! Let’s make it a great month!

Let’s Spoil Mom… With Summer Inspirations! By Holly Bell
Let’s show the moms, grandmothers, and other special ladies in our lives some love this Mother’s Day! With a little effort, we can bring that beautiful smile to Mom’s face. She has been there for us, so let’s show her that her hard work is appreciated. Sometimes, moms have a hard time pampering themselves. Let’s get her a head start on some much-needed pampering featuring thoughtful gifts with summer in mind. Warm temperatures bring thoughts of the beach. Even if you don’t live near a beach, you can pretend with floral and beachy scents! A gift of a wonderful lotion, perfume, or scented candle with hints of coconut oil and paradise would be welcomed by any woman. Speaking of the beach, how about a gorgeous beach towel for her next vacation? If she’s not planning a vacation yet, maybe your gift could be her inspiration! Doesn’t she deserve some time away from the pressures of her daily life? For vacationing or not, a woman always appreciates an easy, breezy dress. How about an effortless, cotton/linen blend shift dress? These are the hot trend for summer. So many women love the one-piece dressing aspect, along with the flattering shape, of the shift. Make some waves with floral and beach-inspired motifs on your mom (or yourself!). For the glamorous mom, a maxi- or midi-length summer dress may be just the ticket. You can’t beat the ease of a long dress—it’s appropriate for the beach, an evening out, and everything in between. If it’s a cool evening or you want some arm and shoulder coverage, just add a little bolero or tie a cardigan around your shoulders. All we need now to complete the look are some fantastic accessories. To go with her summer shift or maxi dress, let’s choose from an array of beautiful blue jewelry for the season. Blue is the perfect color for summer; whether turquoise, royal, or sky blue, it brings us the feeling of clear blue water and clear blue skies. Summer jewelry is so much more fun than jewelry for the other seasons! Brimming with starfish motifs, sparkling Swarovski crystal dangles, swingy tassels, or sand dollars and shells, a gift of summer jewelry is one she will bring out every year and think of you! Since the warmer weather is here, how about a gift of an island-inspired handbag? We all need to put away that heavy, black leather satchel and move on

Take a Spring Break to a brighter, lighter clutch or tote. Nothing completes the look of a summer frock like an adorable straw or lightweight fabric bag with some funky tassels or floral vibes. One of my favorites this year is a tote in white with gorgeous blue flowers, featuring the lettering “Seas the Day!” It’s a perfect and delightful gift for Mom, and for you and me too! Summer may be warm, but those evening breezes sometimes still cool us down after dark. Fortunately for gift-givers, that gives us another great idea: a scarf or wrap. A trendy new scarf can brighten up last year’s outfits, bringing fresh life to them. Some gorgeous selections this year feature a dip-dye effect, where the ends of the scarf feature bold, brilliant color that fades into pastel tones. Also fun are lightweight chiffon and cotton scarves that feature tassels and other adornments. Larger scarves have so many uses. In a pinch, your scarf can be anything from a table cover to a Brazilian-inspired pareo! All you need is a little imagination (and a big scarf). Another thing that makes a scarf a great gift—you don’t have to worry about sizing or fit. How about helping protect your mom from the sun? A hat is a thoughtful gift. Couple the hat with a bottle of SPF lotion, and your thoughtful gift gets even more useful. For the sporty mom, choose a cute summer visor or a patterned baseball cap. For the mom who

loves the outdoors, choose a hat with a brim to protect her while she is hiking, gardening, or relaxing on the beach. Mom will appreciate your thoughtfulness. One style that looks good on everyone is the fedora. It can be used as both casual and dressy, with not too large a brim. Many summer hats can now be folded up to fit in a suitcase or beach bag without ruining their shape! Such a great idea. Now that you are inspired to spoil your mom or the other women in your life, you may as well do a little spoiling on yourself. You know your mom is not the only one who deserves a treat! She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE

Midwest Physical Therapy Services Treating the Whole Person, From Head to Toe
By Deanna Beal
All my life, I’ve heard my mother say, “Don’t make me laugh, or I’ll wet my pants.” I am now a middle-aged woman and grandmother myself, and I, too, tend to avoid quick movements like jumping or dashing to the car in a rainstorm. I had always thought it was just a part of female life and accepted it as something I couldn’t do anything about. Then, I had the chance to visit with Dr. Cheryl Wisinski, a licensed physical therapist and owner of Midwest Physical Therapy Services (MPTS). I had an eye-opening experience, learning that so many women’s health issues are treatable. Dr. Wisinski is a board-certified specialist in women’s health. She has been practicing for over 30 years and has been specializing in women’s health for over 15 years. At MPTS, Dr. Wisinski joins forces with Britnee Hoffner, a physical therapist assistant (PTA), and Michaela Cantral, DPT. Also participating in today’s interview is Kelly Heicht, a student PTA on her 8-week clinical rotation. Eighty percent of the clients they work with are dealing with women’s health issues, including things like incontinence, constipation, pelvic pain, and intercourse pain. They see a range of patients, including pregnant patients, breast cancer patients, and female athletes. They also help young children with issues like bed-wetting. Many patients with incontinence are fearful of going places—everything from traveling great distances to just visiting a friend across town. Britnee shares one patient’s goal of getting back to church. “We like to get them back to doing what they love to do.” Nancy, a MPTS patient, is doing just that. “Having received physical therapy many times, for many reasons, I was certain that coming in for pelvic floor dysfunction would be horrible,” Nancy shares. “I couldn’t imagine that it would help.” Nancy also has chronic pancreatitis; her frequent illness can make it difficult to keep scheduled appointments. “MPTS changed my entire outlook with their caring, their expertise, their understanding, and their professional yet personal approach. I am now more positive and have hope for a better future. Thank you!” At MPTS, their approach is to consider the whole person, not just the symptoms that brought the patient to their office. “If somebody comes in here because she has pelvic pain, we’re going to look at her whole body, from head to toe, the whole person,” says Dr. Wisinski. “If we need to work on correcting her feet or her balance, doing other things that could feed into pelvic pain, then that’s what we will do.” Other areas they often address with patients are cardiovascular fitness, aerobic exercise, and weight

control. MPTS will collaborate with local yoga instructors, dieticians, Dr. Cheryl Wisinski counselors, massage therapists, and personal trainers. “We’re really trying to help people be as healthy as they (middle) with her staff can be,” Dr. Wisinski shares. One thing that stands out about MPTS is their educational approach. “One of the biggest repeated compliments we get from our patients is the education we give them. We spend a lot of time teaching patients about their bodies,” shares Dr. Wisinski. “Our role is to empower them with tools they can use at home.” They use pictures and in-depth explanations of how bodies work to help patients understand why they’re being asked to do the things they do at home. “My quality of life has been improved as a result of my PT visits here,” says MPTS patient Carma. “I appreciate the goal-setting, the continuing education approach, the patiently explained reviews, and the positive and encouraging words that keep me going!” Everything MPTS teaches is evidence-based. They continue to study, read, and apply research that’s proven and works. They summarize what they’ve learned and share it with a huge mailing list of physicians and nurses with whom they work. On their website, midwestpts.com, they provide this information for the community on the Evidence-Based Practice tab. While you’re on the website, you can read an extensive list of their services. They also post educational videos on everything from “Pain Free Sitting Posture” to “The Proper Way to Get In and Out of Your Car.” One of the greatest compliments MPTS receives is when a patient refers a family member or friend to MPTS. When this happens, MPTS shows their appreciation by sending the patient a surprise gift in the mail for every person she refers. Dr. Wisinski expresses, “It’s a huge compliment to us to have a percentage of our business being sent by word-of-mouth, happy customers. That’s really awesome!” Midwest Physical Therapy Services is located at 13911 Gold Circle, Suite #110, in Omaha. For more information, call 402-933-8383 or visit MPTS online at midwestpts.com. What Mothers Want
The Secret Longings of Motherhood By Sharon Knierim
There are about as many methods of mothering in this world as there are mothers. Each one of us has her own style. Many of us have learned mothering from our own mothers or other female relatives. Some of us have mimicked mothers of close friends who had a profound effect on us as we were growing into adulthood. Other mothers do a complete about-face in child rearing and act entirely opposite of what they were exposed to early in life. There are a number of us who were given a head start at mothering as we became caretakers for our younger siblings. We bring some bona fide skills into being mothers! No matter how we approach the raising of our children, we all want the same basic “good things” for our offspring. Who doesn’t want their children to be healthy? What mother doesn’t wish for the most attractive kids in the neighborhood? And, of course, we all wish for children with wonderfully high IQs, coupled with musical ability and the skills required for moving forth in their young lives. Do you recall what you wanted for your children when they were growing? This mother wanted her children to be

compassionate. Of course, that was decades ago, when they were still in rompers. It is difficult (if not impossible) to teach kindness and empathy to someone who still drinks from a bottle and crawls around on their hands and knees. Still, there were lessons to teach and to be learned using teddy bears and dolls. Was it worth the effort? Well, the jury is still out on that one, but I think there is compassion in the generation we produced. One mother once told me that her wish for her three children was that they would be the very best at everything they tried— they should never settle for second best. Now, that is a lot of pressure. Are those three kids the best at everything they do? I’m not sure. You would have to ask their mother. My mother’s wish for her daughters was the same as everyone

else’s. That is to say, she wanted us to be smart, and pretty, and popular. She would encourage us in any way possible and did her best for us as we grew up on the farm. Unbeknownst to her daughters, there were plenty of pressures for our mother. There was, of course, the battle of the budget. Raising five children during the 1950s and 1960s took lots of work and planning…but raising five children, none of whom could share wardrobes or enjoy the fun of hand-me-downs from the closet, had to sometimes seem hopeless. All mothers want their children to “fit in” with their peers. Wouldn’t it be grand if all kiddos automatically and naturally fit into the profiles we set up for them? Well, we know that never happens. Anyway, who would really want that? It’s best and natural that each child finds his own way in life. Forcing a child to be a certain way is much like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. It can leave people feeling beat-down and unhappy, and it just doesn’t work. Over the decades, mothers and their children travel through lots of different phases. Personally, I loved the baby stage of childhood, when the little ones thought their mother was the most wonderful person on earth. Oh, but don’t forget the third birthday, when that baby slips out of toddlerhood and becomes a delightful little companion sans diapers and bottles. The school years always bring back good memories, but it’s also the time when we notice our children listening to other voices (not just their mother!) and marching to different drummers. Of course, they have to do this because these things are rites of passage into adulthood. Adulthood—that’s the magic word. Now that the children are grown and have settled into listening to their mothers again (oh, joy), they are absolutely wonderful human beings. Of course, they were absolutely wonderful human beings all along. Maybe it’s the leveling of being adults together that brings forth a wonderful and peaceful harmony. With peace and harmony, we are given the opportunity to reflect on all the wonderful talents and characteristics they each possess. If you are a mother, please have a wonderful Mother’s Day. If you are fortunate enough to still have your mother near you, take time to celebrate her and reflect on what a genius she is. And remember, like Mother always told you, say “thank you.” WE

Save Your Teeth!
Dental Implants From Specialty Dental Care
By Marge Shoemaker
Do your gums look red and inflamed? Do they bleed when you brush your teeth? Do your teeth sometimes feel loose? Do you have bad breath even though you brush and floss regularly? As your regular dentist will tell you, these are all signs of periodontal disease. Dr. Tim McVaney has been providing periodontal care since 1976. You can find him at Specialty Dental Care, in the L Street Marketplace. Specialty Dental Care was established in the late 1980s. They specialize in dental implants and the treatment of periodontal disease (gum disease). They accept patients of all ages but specialize in geriatric dentistry. “I decided on periodontics as a surgical speciality because I could help people keep their teeth. I have a patient with 40-year experience with me keeping her teeth after being told by another dentist that all of her teeth would need to be extracted.” According to Dr. McVaney, most people start having problems with their teeth in their later years…roughly 30 percent of his patients are older than 50. The goal of periodontics is to save the teeth, if at all possible. “Save the teeth, and the patient eats better. They are then healthier and are more able to enjoy their later years,” posits Dr. McVaney. His father was a dentist, so Dr. McVaney always knew he would go into some area of dentistry. “I became interested in dental implants in 1990, because it helped me to replace teeth that were lost and helped my patients to keep the rest of their teeth by maintaining healthy bone levels in the mouth. Most of those teeth and implants are still there at least 20 to 25 years later,” says Dr. McVaney. He is a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Dentistry. He also holds a Master of Periodontics after completing post-graduate studies at that same institution. Dr. McVaney recently retired from his faculty position at the Creighton University School of Dentistry. “I was working two jobs, teaching and practicing dentistry, for a long time,” he says. “This is my ‘retirement.’ My hours have been cut in half!” He has been actively involved with several professional organizations and groups, both nationally and locally, over the years. One of his passions involves a commitment to continuing education. “Technology changes so quickly today that one nearly has to go to school full-time to keep up,” he comments. “It’s important that practicing dentists, as well as dental students, know what is happening. Procedures and tools of the trade are constantly changing.” An example of this technological progress is the 3-D imaging machine in his office. “It’s no longer necessary to make a plaster mold of the teeth in order to plan your treatment,” he explains. He turns on his computer and brings up a three-dimensional image of a patient’s teeth
18

and jaw. By turning the image in different directions, it is possible to see all facets of the mouth. He points out various images on the scan. “This is a broken tooth we will have to extract…it looks like the root has been damaged… there’s not enough bone left to place an implant in. These white objects are the caps put on the patient’s teeth. This is much more efficient than a mold, and I can show the patient what I plan to do,” he explains. On another scan, he points out the implant (titanium screws) permanently placed in the jaw bone and used to anchor an abutment and crown. “That screw acts like the root of the tooth. Titanium is a metal, but it works with the bone and feels almost like the real thing,” he continues. Implants come in several sizes and can be used to replace any tooth. They are more practical than partials or dentures because they don’t have to be removed to be cleaned. “Implants can be cared for just like regular teeth,” he says. Even though care of implants is relatively simple, it is still important for the patient to have ongoing care. Gum disease generally develops from a lack of proper brushing and flossing. The gum pulls back from the tooth. If bone loss results, you may also lose the tooth. Gum disease usually occurs in adults; children are more resilient and can recover from disease onset. Gum disease cannot be cured…it will never go away. “Brush and floss often—at least twice a day, but more often, if necessary,” Dr. McVaney recommends. Continued care enables him to keep an eye on what is happening in your mouth. Potential problems can be addressed before they become emergencies. He has a staff of two hygienists, Shelli and Heather, and three dental assistants, Kayla, Sandra, and Victor, to help out. Other staff includes Kris McVaney (Dr. McVaney’s son) as office manager; scheduling coordinator, Amber; and insurance and financial coordinator, Mary. Specialty Dental Care is located at 12242 K Plaza (in the L Street Marketplace at 120th and L Streets), in suite 113. Appointments can be made by calling 402334-8083. Their web page (omahaspecialtydental.com) includes blogs and links to other sources, as well as full information on the services they offer. The office is open Tuesday through Friday with special accommodations on Monday and Saturday for existing patients. WE

Fresh Concept
When Family Matters The Importance of Family Law By Kathy Glow
Family law is an area of the law that deals with family matters and domestic relationships. It is sometimes called matrimonial law; however, a family lawyer can help settle matters other than those pertaining to marriage. Basically, any legal issues that a family—spouses, parents, and children—would face fall under the umbrella of family law. In many jurisdictions in the United States, the family courts see the most crowded dockets, with litigants from all social and economic classes. Between rising divorce rates and new legal questions stemming from same-sex marriage laws, issues are constantly arising that are best handled by an expert in family law. Marriage is at the root of most family court hearings, since there are many scenarios that result from marriage and may need intervention. Family courts can be involved in common law marriages, can dispute whether a couple is legally able to receive a marriage license, can rule in cases of annulment or dissolution of marriage, and can grant legal separations. Minors under the age of 18 can also petition the court to be emancipated (that is, legally free from the control of their parents). The issue of same-sex marriage was settled in 2015, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment fundamentally protects the right of same-sex couples to get married. This changed the legal landscape for many issues related to marriage, as same-sex couples now have the right to marry in all 50 states, and states are required to recognize lawful same-sex marriages performed in other states. However, some related issues will need to be decided by the courts in various states. Couples wishing to adopt children may need the assistance of a family lawyer. Questions over couples’ tax status, inheritance, and death benefits also may arise. Civil unions and domestic partnerships are also granted by family court. A civil union, while not a marriage, is a legal relationship between two people that provides legal protections to the couple only at the state level. Civil unions do not provide federal protections, benefits, or responsibilities to couples, and they may not be recognized by all states. Similar to civil unions, domestic partnerships are a form of relationship that gives limited state rights to both same-sex and opposite-sex couples who live together but wish to remain unmarried or whose marriage is prohibited by law. Where there is marriage, there is also divorce. Family court helps settle many decisions surrounding divorce. In collaborative mediation, a neutral attorney-mediator and a counseling professional work collaboratively with a divorcing couple to help them reach mutually acceptable agreements. They can bring a couple’s pre- or post-nuptial agreements to a judge, who will ensure that the agreement is upheld. If couples do not wish to confront each other in person, the courts can make determinations relating to the divorce. The court can award alimony payments to
20

one spouse; in some cases, palimony is awarded. Palimony refers to alimony-like support payments that are made by one unmarried partner to another upon splitting up after having previously lived together. When minor children are part of a dissolving marriage, the family courts are involved in making decisions for the children’s welfare. Issues of child custody are decided independently of all other issues. Child custody is based on many factors. If the court believes a child’s well-being would be jeopardized by one parent, that parent will not be awarded unsupervised visits with the child. If parents are granted equal and unsupervised parental rights, one parent (the custodial parent) is usually awarded primary custody of the child. Family court also steps in on cases of parental abduction. Because parental abduction is specifically a violation of the child custody order, many of the remedies in a parental abduction case are the same as those for any violation of a child custody order. Some of the penalties for violating custody orders are large fines, jail time, loss of custody, and loss of visitation rights. Child support payments are also handled as an independent issue in family court. Sometimes a custodial parent has to pay for activities the child engages in when in the care of the non-custodial parent. Family courts often require child support orders to be filed with the state’s child support enforcement agency to ensure that parents are in compliance with the orders. If not, parents can face stiff penalties, such as jail time or termination of parental rights. Unmarried couples can ask the court to order legal custody, visitation schedules, and child support. Family court can step in when a child’s paternity is in question. Paternity fraud occurs when a mother
www.womensedition.com
names a man as the biological father of a child, when she knows or suspects that he is not the biological father. Because no states require a mother who files a claim for child support to advise the court or child-support agencies when another man (other than the one she named) could potentially be the child’s father, men may be paying for support for children who are not their own. Certain cases of adoption may be handled by family court. In situations where the state’s laws are not clear, a judge may hear the case and rule based on her discretion. Many times, these are cases involving single parents, same-sex couples, or two families who wish to adopt the same child. Judges are likely to grant adoptions based on the best interests of the child, as long as the decision is within the confines of the law. The desire to have a child who is genetically related to at least one parent may make surrogacy a more attractive option than adoption for some couples. The legal issues surrounding surrogacy are constantly changing. A family lawyer can help couples and their surrogates interpret these laws and enter into a lawful contract. Sometimes there are serious reasons that a custodial parent should no longer have custody of a child. When issues of abandonment, neglect, and abuse arise, the court may recommend placing the child in a foster home. The court then works with the custodial parent to regain parental rights. In severe cases, the rights are terminated indefinitely, and the child is placed for adoption. Family court also presides over cases of guardianship, in which a decision is made determining who will be responsible for the medical, personal, and financial decisions of a child or adult who cannot care for himself. Family court also hears cases of domestic violence; in fact, the number of cases reported annually has been increasing. In some
jurisdictions, the court can press charges against the abuser even without the victim’s permission. The court can make decisions even in the absence of the victim. Abuse victims can also seek a restraining order or an order of protection against their abusers. Allegations of child abuse and child neglect are seen in family court, as well. The family court handles most cases involving youths between eight and 16 years old who are charged with offenses that would be crimes if committed by adults. These are called adjudication cases. This is a trial process in which a court determines whether or not the allegations contained in a petition are supported by evidence. A good family lawyer is a jack-of-many-trades. A client needs to be mindful of the fact that a family lawyer may be working several cases at the same time, so choosing someone with excellent time management is important. A family lawyer needs to be an expert negotiator as well as a skilled litigator, as cases may be settled either in or out of the courtroom. A lawyer with financial knowledge is key in cases involving payments and settlements. Finally, counseling and interpersonal skills are a must, as a family lawyer is working with a family during one of the most stressful and difficult times in their lives. Families and their lawyers often develop a close and sensitive relationship, as settling some cases may take months or even years. To find a family lawyer who fits the needs of your family, you can conduct an online search or contact your State Bar Association. It is of the utmost importance that you and your attorney have a good working relationship so that you can both take care of your family matters. Or perhaps you’ve been experiencing pain in your breast or discharge from your nipple. Maybe you’ve felt a tiny lump that wasn’t there before. Whatever is going on with your breast that doesn’t feel right, you should talk it over with your physician. If the time comes for a breast specialist, you should call Dr. Janet Grange. When Dr. Grange and her sister were in their 20s, they were both new mothers, just finishing college and ready to begin their adult lives. Then, her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. Being a part of her sister’s struggle and death shaped Dr. Grange’s entire life. In those days, breast cancer wasn’t talked about. Information on the disease and available treatments was scant. Women were not encouraged to be actively involved in treatment of their breast health. Because there was so little information available to the public, a woman just did whatever her doctor told her to do.
Dr. Grange wanted that situation to improve, so she decided to enter medical school. She was awarded her MD with high distinction from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She completed residency training in general surgery from UNMC and ultimately became a certified breast surgeon. She is affiliated with several organizations concerned with breast cancer, cancer research, and general breast health. Her business is a corporate sponsor of the Nebraska Komen Race for the Cure. “My passion for fighting breast cancer stems from

my sister’s struggle,” she explains. “Women need to be involved in any treatment they receive.” She is grateful that society has changed in their reaction to this invasive disease. Regretfully, denial still abounds. Another sister was told of an abnormality in her mammogram. “She came to see me because she knew I would listen,” Dr. Grange recalls. They talked it out. She told her sister that “it may be nothing…or it could be something,” and they decided to further investigate the abnormality. “This office is a ‘safe place’ for women who are experiencing breast problems. We won’t judge. You don’t just check a box on a form. That tends to dehumanize a very human problem,” she explains. As an independent physician, Dr. Grange has access to any of the health systems in Omaha: Nebraska Medicine, Methodist Hospital, or any of the CHI affiliates. “Having a choice in where they will be treated gives my patients a sense of comfort…they are involved,” she explains. Those systems provide access to all the resources of the region. “By not being locked into a particular hospital or system, I can concentrate on my patient’s care and not worry about system details. My patients don’t get lost in the shuffle,” she asserts. Dr. Grange advises women to be proactive in their health care…to be their own advocates. Regular checkups and breast self-exams help identify when something has changed with your breasts. “Tell your doctor when you are sensing that something is wrong. Describe your symptoms. Be honest. Doctors aren’t mind
readers. It’s your life!” she proclaims. Disease is like a puzzle, she notes. The patient has most of the pieces that the physician needs to figure it out. If the patient isn’t open and honest with her doctor, then the puzzle will be incomplete…as will the treatment. She also reminds us that there are usually a variety of treatment choices. “Cancer and its treatments aren’t a black-and-white situation,” she explains. “Each patient is an individual and should be treated as such. Medicine isn’t a one-size-fits-all business.” Dr. Grange’s philosophy is simple: If the complicated is made simple, then the scary stuff doesn’t seem so scary. “It’s rewarding when a patient can face the risk, the ‘what ifs’ of a situation, and make an informed decision. I think it gives them more hope,” she states. Her patients know she will do whatever is possible and that sometimes it’s necessary to leave the rest to “a higher power.” Her patient, JR, confirms this. “My case developed some complications,” she explains. “Dr. Grange has always been available when I’ve needed her. She’s been there for several years.” For Dr. Grange, her constant availability to her patients feels much like mothering. “I stay with my patients until they can go it alone…it doesn’t end when the surgery is over,” she concludes. Dr. Grange’s office is located at 401 East Gold Coast Road, just south of Highway 370, in Papillion. Appointments can be made by calling 402-934-9323. Wave “Hello” to Summer With Confidence! Shape Up Your Arms By Monica L. Davis
We’ve made it! The frigid winter months are gone, and Memorial Day is upon us, bringing summer gatherings, picnics, and pool time. Along with that come sundresses and bathing suits—unmasking the arms. Your arms spend most of their time undercover in winter, and now you want them to look great. It’s not too late to spruce them up for summer! Of course, your whole body benefits from exercise, but keep some specific activities in mind to tone your arms. You can increase the amount of muscle in your arms and shed fat by committing to an arm-focused workout routine. Choose activities that engage your upper body, such as kickboxing, swimming, weightlifting, or yoga. Fitness facilities offer many group classes as well as personal trainers to help you obtain the toned, chiseled arms you desire. Now, for some of us, it doesn’t matter how many trips we make from the vehicle to the house with shopping bags, how many extra arm reps we add at the gym, or how much healthier we eat. Our arms are never going to be as toned as we would like. Luckily, there are some cosmetic procedures available to help us close the gap. One method is Smart Liposuction, which improves muscle definition, tightens loose skin, and enhances the overall appearance of your silhouette. Smart Liposuction removes excess body fat and firms loose skin. After local anesthesia is applied, a small incision is
made to insert a small cannula or tube. A laser fiber is introduced into the body through the cannula. The laser zaps the fat cells, and the fat melts away! Smart Liposuction recovery depends on each patient; however, most people are back to work within a few days. CoolSculpting is now available for your arms (as well as your stomach, flanks, and other areas of the body). CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved fat-reduction treatment that eliminates stubborn fat that sticks around regardless of all efforts made to exercise and eat properly. The best part about this treatment is that it’s noninvasive—no needles or surgery required! CoolSculpting works by using controlled cooling to freeze (and kill) stubborn fat cells. Your body then processes the fat and eliminates the dead cells. CoolSculpting requires minimal recovery time; you should be back to your regular routine almost immediately. The feel of glowing, silky skin is just as essential as having ›››

toned, sculpted arms. How do you rid your arms of unwanted hair? There are a few different options for getting the results you desire. Waxing is an efficient way to temporarily remove the hair from your arms, leaving them soft and silky to the touch. If you choose the waxing route, keep these tips in mind: Exfoliate in the morning prior to your appointment, take a pain reliever one hour before your appointment, and avoid caffeine for the whole day. For the first 24 hours after your appointment, avoid scented lotions and long periods of sun exposure. If you received an underarm waxing, avoid using deodorant. For waxing services, you will want to visit a spa or a certified esthetician. The smooth results of waxing typically last up to six weeks. If only six weeks of hair-free skin is not going to cut it for you, you might consider laser hair removal. This is performed by employing a highly-concentrated laser light, which targets the hair follicles. The light permanently damages the hair follicles, which inhibits hair regrowth. The laser is very precise—each pulse only takes a fraction of a second, and many hairs can be treated at the same time. Some patients experience permanent hair removal after the first session; some patients will require maintenance visits to remain entirely hair-free. Laser hair removal is a medical procedure, so always seek a certified technician and be sure to check the credentials of the doctor or technician performing the treatment. Another form of hair removal that is often chosen for the arms is electrolysis. With this method, a very fine needle is inserted into an individual hair follicle. Then, a small electrical current destroys the hair growth cells. Several sessions are often necessary to remove all the hair. This is because individual hairs are in different stages of the growth cycle at any given moment. Once the series of electrolysis treatments is completed, this is considered a permanent solution to unwanted hair. Always seek a professional electrologist when choosing electrolysis, as these technicians have special training for the procedure. Don’t let poorly toned arms or excessive hair keep you from enjoying the summer sun on the beach, at the pool, or just around town. Get your arms summer-ready and then get out there to show them off! Contrasting Experiences
Instead of Looking Backward, Move Forward
When we finally understand that we all create our own reality, it can be a little disconcerting. After all, unless we live in Utopia, there are always going to be things occurring in our experience that are less than perfect. It could be relationships, health, work, or money. Are you appreciating the contrast yet? “Perhaps without the lows, the highs could not be reached.” —Stephenie Meyer You are most likely experiencing contrast if you find yourself asking, “Why in the world did I create this?” What most of us have a tendency to do is to try and figure out how “it” happened. We typically look backward and evaluate what our thoughts and feelings have been to get us to this point. A better approach may be to view it as the perfect path that we are supposed to be on in order to manifest our broader intentions. When I am going through something less than perfect in my life, I have come to realize that I don’t have the full story yet. “Don’t dwell on what went wrong. Instead, focus on what to do next. Spend your energies on moving forward toward finding the answer.” —Denis Waitley An affirmation that works very well is: “Everything is unfolding
exactly as it should be. The Universe knows exactly what I want and is in the process of delivering it to me.” Instead of looking backward, I am moving forward. Now, I am not going to tell you that this is always easy. In fact, it can be incredibly challenging. What helps me through it is faith and my past life experiences. I have often said that nothing bad has ever happened to me. I believe this. Have I faced a lot of challenges in my life? Of course. Have I learned from each and every one of them? Yes. When we are in the thick of a challenging situation, when we are experiencing true contrast, we need to step back and know that “this, too, shall pass.” “Just because today is a terrible day doesn’t mean tomorrow won’t be the best day of your life. You just gotta get there.” —Unknown Trusting that the Universe has heard our asking allows us to let go. Let go of the angst, let go of the action part of creating our own reality. It allows us to get out of our own way, which more often than not, is exactly what stops us from creating the reality that we keep saying we want. Know that the Universe has our back—always has our back. Make a decision to trust, have faith, and keep moving forward. Stop looking back. As a dear sweet friend of mine reminds me, you’ve got to keep swimming! WE

A Story of Four Sisters
Talking to Mom About Senior Living By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS
I recently came across a series of letters (round-robin style), written over a period of years, by four sisters. This is the story of those four sisters, from a family of 10, and how they navigated senior living arrangements. Brenda had two children and was divorced. Alison came next, had three children, and was widowed after being married only 20 years. Next was Lydia, who never married but was godmother to several nieces and nephews. After 12 years came Daphne, the youngest in the family, who had nine children and was married for more than 50 years. The sisters were active, liked people, and were interested in what was going on. All lived to their late 90s. The letters, about caring for their aging mother, began in the late 1950s, following the death of their father. Brenda didn’t like the idea of putting Mama in a home. “That’s where people go to die,” she wrote. “They don’t have anything to do. They’re around old people all the time. Mama wouldn’t like that.” Alison and Daphne agreed. “We all have families and are spread around the country. It would be difficult for any of us to take Mama in,” they wrote. Lydia commented, “Since I live in the same town as Mama, it wouldn’t be hard to get a bigger place with room for her.” The others agreed to chip in and help Lydia with expenses. The sisters kept in touch. Eventually, all four ended up living alone. Talk about “old folk’s homes” resurfaced after Brenda was
injured in an automobile accident and spent several months in rehabilitation. Brenda’s daughter looked to her aunts for advice. “Those injuries aren’t going to permit her to go back to her apartment with the stairs,” Brenda’s daughter wrote. The sisters responded, almost as one voice: It will be difficult for Brenda to adjust to a move. Today’s senior facilities aren’t like the old homes. She would be happier there. Sadly, the decision didn’t need to be made because Brenda died from complications shortly thereafter. Lydia chose to move to a senior facility when the stairs to her apartment became “too steep” for her to climb. Alison opted for assisted living after a debilitating illness. Daphne and her husband moved to a senior living complex together. After he died, she decided to move to another facility, closer to her children. What’s my reason for telling this story? These women made their own decisions to move into a senior facility, after discussing it with their children. None of them wanted to be “put” in a home. Each found a place suited to her wants and needs. The moral? It’s never too soon to talk to Mom (and Dad) about the aging process and possible relocation…even hypothetically. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Redesigning the Garage The Final Frontier in Home Renovation
By Robyn V. Powell
Garage makeovers are one of the hottest home improvement trends in 2017. Once an afterthought, the garage has new status among homeowners looking to enhance their living environment with a clean, wellorganized, and functional space. No matter what your style, your budget, or your needs, the rapidly growing garage improvement industry has made transforming your garage into a tidy, functional space an achievable goal. From lawn equipment to sports equipment, the garage is a catchall room for everything we don’t want stored in the house but can’t quite bring ourselves to part with. The result is a cluttered and chaotic space with barely enough room left to park the car! The first step toward reclaiming your garage is to purge. Take advantage of a mild spring weekend to tackle the job. Place a couple of tarps on the driveway and remove everything from the garage. Decide what to sell, trash, or donate. How many rakes do you actually need? How about that broken toaster that you’ve been planning to repair for five years? The more clutter you have, the more ruthless your purge needs to be. Once you’ve pared down your items, you’ll have a better idea of how much and what kind of storage you need. Visualize your space and how you want it to function. One of the biggest challenges in a garage makeover is how to optimize storage space—the objective is to get everything off the floor and give
it a place of its own. An organization specialist can help you make sense of your space. She can talk to you about your vision, take a look at your space (and your stuff), and suggest storage solutions tailored to your needs. Smart storage systems use vertical and overhead space to maximize the square footage you can devote to storage. A versatile slat-wall system is perfect for yard tools, shovels, extension cords, and bikes. Overhead storage racks are ideal for bulky or seasonal items like tires, patio furniture, and sports equipment. You can also consider adjustable shelving, cabinets, peg boards, or drawers. Well-planned work stations can also be a great fit in a garage. Do you have a gardener, carpenter, or automotive enthusiast in the household? Install a convenient potting or tool bench. Consider lockable cabinets to safely house power tools and automotive fluids. Once you’ve cleared and organized your garage, that dull, bare concrete floor will really stick out. Turning a dirty concrete floor into a beautifully finished floor sets the ›››

foundation for the entire space. Once it’s finished, you’ll appreciate how much better it looks and how much easier it is to maintain. When you’re deciding on a new floor, you should consider budget and durability. Garage floors take abuse from road salt, motor oil, anti-freeze, and temperature extremes. Fortunately, there are paints and dyes specifically designed to seal and protect concrete garage floors. A multi-coat 100 percent solids epoxy garage floor finish is hard, durable, and attractive. Adding color chips creates a textured finish and decreases slipperiness. Floors will need to be cleaned, cracks repaired, and surfaces properly prepped before coating. Be sure to get competitive quotes for installation, and find out whether the prep work is included. Also, keep in mind that you’ll need to have everything off the floor of the garage during installation and curing time—your installer can tell you how long it needs to dry. As a prominent exterior feature of your home, garage doors improve curb appeal and increase the value of your home. According to a recent report from the National Association of Realtors, homeowners can expect to recoup 100 percent of the cost of replacement garage doors. Garage doors come in many materials, including wood, wood composite, steel, and fiberglass, as well as many styles, one of which is sure to suit your home. The best garage door opener is the one you never have to think about; one that’s efficient, reliable, and quiet. The best ones integrate seamlessly with your home’s automation system, with features like preinstalled timers for automatic closure and backup power systems so you’re never stuck during power outages. You want an opener with a motion sensor that will reverse door closure if it detects an object in its path. You can even go high tech with built-in Wi-Fi that allows you to close your door from wherever you are, with your smartphone. Homeowners everywhere are appreciating the benefits of a garage makeover. Whether you’re ready to invest in a custom makeover or you just wish you could find your hedge trimmer when you need it, creating an inviting and efficient garage is within your reach. Seasons of Life
Incontinence Managed Reclaim Your Life By Linda Barnes
When 25–33 percent of American adults experience urinary incontinence, it deserves serious attention. Notice that I didn’t say that many people report incontinence—many don’t mention their problem, even to their doctor, because of embarrassment or the belief that nothing can be done. If you suffer from inconvenient leakage or troublesome frequent urges, take heart. Help is available. Urinary incontinence is defined as involuntary urine leakage or a loss of urinary control. Women experience symptoms twice as often as men, often due to the stresses of pregnancy and childbirth. Stress incontinence is when the weakened muscles of the pelvic floor cannot hold in urine when they come under the sudden stress of something like a cough, a sneeze, laughing, heavy lifting, or another physical activity. Urge incontinence occurs with an overactive bladder that suddenly contracts, even though the bladder is not full. These are the two most common types of incontinence. Incontinence in men is often caused by an enlarged prostate that restricts flow and stops the bladder from emptying properly. This is called flow incontinence. Men may also experience overactive bladder. Whatever the cause, incontinence has obvious negative effects on a person’s emotional health and social life. Thankfully, incontinence is treatable. Your family physician may be able to diagnose and treat symptoms, or she may provide a referral to a specialist, such
as a urologist, who treats urinary tract issues. Physical exams provide valuable clues, and tests can help determine the underlying cause. Tests might include urinalysis, blood test, ultrasound, or x-ray. Risk factors for incontinence include being overweight, smoking (chronic cough), childbearing, advancing age, and certain diseases. Conditions that affect the central nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis, stroke, or Parkinson’s disease, may also cause incontinence. If underlying health issues such as cystitis, central nervous system problems, or enlarged prostate are causing incontinence, they must be addressed. Prevention may include maintaining a normal weight, avoiding (or quitting) smoking, and getting regular exercise. The good news about stress incontinence due to weakened muscles of the pelvic floor is that those muscles can be strengthened just like any other muscles. special focus on those muscles. A physical therapist may use biofeedback to teach you how to do the exercises properly. An estimated seven out of 10 women with stress incontinence will progress enough with these strategies to be satisfied with the improvement. Wouldn’t that be worth the effort? Think of the boost to your self-confidence. Medications are a less frequent cause of incontinence. Your health professional will want to consider whether prescriptions such as those for blood pressure, sleeping aids, sedatives, or muscle relaxants might be implicated. Alcohol overuse or urinary tract infections could be causing symptoms, as well. Urge incontinence may require different treatment strategies. The sudden urge to urinate might be triggered by miscommunication between bladder and brain. Treatment may involve lifestyle changes, medication, or, possibly, surgery. Medications such as anticholinergics can help calm an overactive bladder. Newer treatments include a neurostimulator known as InterStim, which sends gentle electrical pulses to the sacral nerve to help with bladder control. Medicare and many insurance plans will cover a trial period, with an external device, to determine its effectiveness for you. For longterm therapy, the device is implanted. Botox may help some cases of overactive bladder through minimally invasive injection treatments. Platelet-rich plasma (known as the O-shot) is a newer injection that is said to enhance female sexual function and also relieve some symptoms of incontinence. Several surgical options are available when less invasive strategies prove inadequate. For women, devices can support the bladder and help prevent leakage. A mesh sling may provide relief by lifting the bladder neck. An artificial valve is another option that works by controlling flow. Several much-improved catheters are also available. With a little practice, users can return to normal activities. If you’re experiencing urine leakage or loss of bladder control, you can still live life to the fullest and enjoy your favorite pursuits. Find a physician, physical therapist, or personal trainer (or a combination of professionals) to help put the joy back in your life. With the latest techniques, medications, and products, it will absolutely be worth the effort. More Move, Less Stress Hiring the Right Moving Professionals
By Anne Yankus
Moving is a stressful process, as anyone who has done so can tell you. Between cleaning, making sure nothing is left behind, and getting everything (and everyone) to your new home safely, there are a lot of things to accomplish in a short amount of time. While it’s impossible to take all the stress out of moving, there are certain professionals and services for hire that can really take the edge off. One thing many people have to deal with when moving is buying or selling a house. This does not technically require a professional—but just because you can legally do it yourself, that doesn’t mean you should. If you want to concentrate on the logistics of moving your household, hire a realtor to handle the pricing, staging, advertising, and showing of your home (not to mention negotiating the deal!). Mostly likely, you can work with the same realtor to find your new home and negotiate with your seller. It’s important to find a realtor you can trust to guide you through both of those transactions. There are a few easy steps to help you find the best realtor for you: researching her credentials, talking to her recent clients, and checking her current listings. When researching a prospective realtor’s credentials, you’ll want to look for Certified Residential Specialists (CRS) and/or Accredited Buyer’s Representatives (ABR). Looking up a realtor’s current state license should also allow you to see whether she has had
any complaints or disciplinary action lodged against her. Once you’ve settled the buying and selling your house part (or if you’re a renter who didn’t have to do that in the first place), the next thing to worry about is getting your stuff from point A to point B. For that, you can call up some friends and bust your back trying to shimmy your couch through the door, or you can hire a professional. It can be worth every penny. You’ll want to do some research before deciding which moving company to hire. A good starting point is to get personal recommendations and create a list of three or four companies for in-home estimates. Show the estimators everything that’s being moved, and let them know about any obstacles that may be in your new home (like distance from the curb and stairs) to make sure you get the most accurate estimate. You’ll also want to get each company’s contact information and their U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and MC license numbers. After selecting your ideal mover, be sure to get all the proper paperwork, like a bill of lading, the company’s liability insurance, and a timetable for the move. ›››

When searching for moving companies, you may come across the term “relocation company,” which is actually different from a moving company. A relocation company specializes in helping companies move their employees for work. If you’ve ever heard of a job offer that included moving expenses and assistance, you can bet a relocation company was involved. While this is probably an irrelevant process if you’re making a personal move, you may run into a relocation company as the seller when purchasing your new house. Another thing to consider is storage. Maybe your new house won’t be ready yet when you need to be out of your current one. For the time in between, you’ll need somewhere to store whatever doesn’t fit into your temporary housing. There are many types of storage available, including storage through your moving company, DIY self-storage, portable storage units, and climatecontrolled storage facilities. Short-term storage is nice for its flexibility, with facilities that are accessible 24 hours per day and month-to-month payment plans. If you need to store items for years rather than months, long-term storage might be a more economical option. (For long-term storage, consider a climate-controlled unit.) Last, but not least, is cleaning your old place before moving out. This is the part of moving that often gets forgotten until the last minute, which makes it really stressful. Who wants to worry about cleaning out the kitchen cabinets after you spent all day organizing their contents and packing them into boxes? Keep in mind that you can hire a professional cleaning service to clean your home for you! Some cleaning services even specialize in moveout cleaning. Outsourcing the heavy cleaning lets you focus on packing up your stuff—plus, they’re professionals, so you’ll probably get a more thorough clean than if you do it yourself. Now that you have a good idea of who to call to make your move as stress-free as humanly possible, you’ll be able to focus on all the important parts of moving, like enjoying your new home! Hearing Loss Is Not a Fact of Life Protect and Test Your Hearing
By Kylie Gumpert
Hearing loss doesn’t get as much press as heart disease and arthritis, but it joins them to round out the top three most common chronic conditions in the United States. Many Americans are not taking advantage of the treatments and devices that could help them hear better…and they’re not taking simple steps to protect the hearing they still have. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, roughly 38 million Americans have trouble hearing. It’s the most common disability experienced by those who live and work in combat areas where gunfire or explosions are present. Even noise that doesn’t seem all that loud, like a lawn mower, or loud noise that we only hear occasionally, like a rock concert, can contribute to hearing loss over time. Still, the majority of people with hearing issues—80 percent of hearing-impaired Americans—don’t seek help. Many people go 10 years or more before they seek a solution. Why the long wait? Hearing loss most often happens gradually. In many cases, the loss is so gradual that it goes unnoticed. Medications, infections, and exposure to loud noise can all contribute to hearing loss. Its severity can vary, and it may be temporary or permanent, depending on the cause. Tinnitus is the perception of noise in the ears when no such noise is actually present. Patients often describe the sound as ringing, buzzing, or static. You have probably heard this sound

yourself—it’s the ringing you briefly experience after you hear an extremely loud noise (like a rock concert or an explosion). With short-term exposure, the ringing is most often only temporary, and normal hearing returns shortly. The American Tinnitus Association estimates that 20 million Americans experience tinnitus chronically. Most often, chronic tinnitus is caused by damage to or infections of the ear and surrounding areas. There is no cure for tinnitus, but hearing aids, sound therapy to mask noise, and behavioral therapy to relieve feelings of anger or anxiety from experiencing these often offputting sounds can help. Hearing tests are relatively simple and may include a physical examination of your ear, a tuning fork test, which makes a ringing sound when struck, or an audiometer test, which involves listening through headphones and telling the technician when you hear noise. These tests may be administered by your regular doctor, an otolaryngologist (ENT), or an audiologist. A new hearing test from researchers at the University of Connecticut may be able to determine hearing loss earlier by

testing both ears together. Traditional screenings normally test one ear at a time, but testing both ears simultaneously may reveal a hidden hearing deficiency, even if a single-ear test showed a normal hearing range. There are many types of hearing aids. A completely-in-the-canal hearing aid is molded to fit inside the ear and is nearly invisible. These are recommended for mild to moderate hearing loss. An in-the-ear aid is slightly larger, filling the bowl-shaped area of the ear. It has more capabilities than smaller devices and is good for more severe hearing loss. Some hearing aids have directional microphones, which are helpful in noisy areas, or telephone switches, which allow the wearer to hear more clearly on the phone. Several hearing aids on the market can now connect to smart devices around the home, such as a smoke alarm or the doorbell, to ensure that users can hear these important and potentially life-saving sounds. Some hearing aids can even stream phone calls or music. In cases of severe hearing deficiency or deafness, a patient may opt for a cochlear implant, which is surgically placed inside the ear and directly stimulates the auditory nerve. This is appropriate for patients of all ages, even children as young as one year, so long as they are healthy enough for surgery. Worldwide, around 325,000 people have opted for this procedure. Because the cochlear device bypasses whatever portions of the ear have been damaged enough to prevent hearing, the type of hearing experienced through this implant is different from a fully functioning human ear. However, it can enable someone who was born without hearing (congenital hearing loss) to understand speech and sounds. The device’s processor can last for several years. Its battery and microphone will need to be replaced every year or so. Some types of hearing loss can’t be prevented, but noise-induced hearing loss is completely preventable. All it takes is being aware of the damage that loud noises can do to your ears and choosing to protect them. If you are regularly exposed to loud noise at work or at home, do yourself a favor and pop in some earplugs. It’s never too early to start protecting your hearing! An Inside Look
CLC Landscapes Omaha’s Homegrown Lawn Company Blossoms By Robyn V. Powell
Professional landscaping is a key ingredient to enhancing your outdoor living space. It’s also one of the best ways to add value to your home. Nothing says “curb appeal” like a well-manicured property. It creates a wonderful first impression and shows potential buyers that you take pride in your home. Whether you plan to sell your home soon or live in it forever, a knowledgeable landscaper can create an oasis of enjoyment for you and your family. Andrew Gangestad is the president of CLC Landscapes in Omaha. He has been helping people translate their landscape visions into reality for over a decade. He reports growing demand from homeowners across the metro area who are looking to refresh their landscaping and upgrade their properties. The seeds of Andrew’s entrepreneurial future were sown at age 16, when he started a lawn-mowing business. “I had a 1989 Jeep Cherokee, a trailer, and a few regular customers,” Andrew says. While he was studying horticulture and landscape design at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, his father and a school friend managed the fledgling business. In 2007, Andrew returned to Omaha, ready to take the business to the next level. He leased some space, opened a shop, and developed his lawn-care business into a full-service landscape company. Today, CLC Landscapes specializes in commercial property maintenance, residential landscape design and installation, and the construction of stonework patios, walkways, and fire pits. Andrew’s business philosophy is relationship-driven. “The best part of what I do is the people I get to meet,” explains Andrew. “I enjoy working closely with clients. I’m involved in every job.” He notes that it’s important to understand what matters most to each client. “What may not be a big deal to one person may matter a great deal to someone else,” he says. “Maybe clients have a pet that needs to be accommodated or they’re worried about how much mess may occur. I reassure them that their homes and properties will be well taken care of. It’s important to let people know they can count on us to make things right. Over time, we’ve built a solid reputation, with most of our new work coming from referrals from happy customers.” One of the biggest learning curves for Andrew has been realizing that, as a business owner, you can’t do it all yourself—you have to be able to rely on your staff. Andrew has built a team of 14 full-time employees and employs a total of 18 during peak season. More than half his staff have been with him since he started the business. With grueling, 12-hour work days, Andrew stresses the importance of letting his staff members know they’re appreciated. “We offer incentives like zoo passes to guys with families.” Business is brisk, but Andrew has a disciplined
48

approach to growing his company. “It’s not about taking on every job we possibly can. It’s about figuring out how to best manage projects so we can take on additional work and still do a Andrew Gangestad, good job on every job,” Andrew says. Some of the greatest president of CLC challenges are contending with variables like live plants Landscapes and unpredictable weather. “Rain delays can be frustrating, but we have to accept that Mother Nature is in charge!” CLC Landscapes offers the flexibility of completing a master plan project in several phases. A large project can be structured over a period of 2–4 years, allowing clients to stagger the cost. With proper planning, the project can be done in phases, so it looks finished after each step and doesn’t incur a lot of expense at once. Staging a project can be done in an aesthetically pleasing way that doesn’t look obvious. Doug Johnson could not say enough about how pleased he was with Andrew and the work CLC Landscapes recently completed at his home in west Omaha. “Andrew is topnotch all the way around, and the quality of his work is A-plus. He has an excellent eye for design and architecture. We’ve had so many compliments on our property. He’s a great communicator who won’t overstate himself or leave you in the lurch. He does what he says and goes above and beyond for cleanup. When it comes to quality and followup, he’s absolutely unparalleled. We need more people like Andrew in small business.” Andrew believes in supporting local suppliers and works exclusively with an Omaha nursery that produces top-quality plants. When it comes to planting choices, he advises us to go native. “Indigenous trees, plants, and shrubs will thrive naturally, without the extra TLC required to force something to grow outside its natural habitat.” With spring in the air, CLC Landscapes is gearing up for another busy season. “It’s a tough, labor-intensive business,” Andrew says, “but I can’t imagine doing anything else. My job is to always come through for my client, and my biggest joy is figuring out a way to make it happen. It’s all I’ve ever done, and I wouldn’t change it for the world!” Visit clcomaha.net to learn more about CLC Landscapes. For free design consultations and estimates, call 402-7348088. The Mutual Fund Alphabet Which Share Class Is Right for You? By George Morgan
According to the Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett, the key to investment success is to reduce the fees you pay to have your money managed. Do you have any of your 401(k) dollars invested in mutual funds? Do you know how much you are paying for those mutual funds? All mutual funds charge some form of a fee, and these fees run from as little as 0.04 percent to as much as 2.5 percent. This “maintenance fee” pays for the expenses of the fund company, such as accounting, advertising, printing and mailing statements, and the salaries of the money professionals who run the portfolios. Depending on which share class you buy (and where you buy), it can also pay the broker a significant amount of money for selling to you. It’s important to know how much you’re paying in fees, but it’s also vital to know what you’re getting in return. You are probably most familiar with actively managed mutual funds, which come in three basic classes: A shares, B shares, and C shares. The differences between these classes are the amount of fees they charge, the timing of the fees, and, in some cases, the person to whom the fee is paid. Shareholders of a specific fund all get the same services and money management; the differences in the fees they pay depend upon the share type they own. Because the fees you pay decrease the amount of your investment return,
50
May 2017
it is important to pick the share class that is appropriate for you. A shares charge a onetime, up-front commission. Mutual funds became popular in the mid-1980s, and A shares were the only shares available at that time. In the 1980s, most A shares charged an up-front 8.5 percent, most of which was paid to the broker. Over time, that number has come under pressure—now, the average is about half that, at 3.5 to 4 percent. A shares have what is known as a right of accumulation (ROA). As the dollar amount of your account grows, it will hit an ROA breakpoint. Any additional dollars you add to the account after that are subject to a lower up-front fee. B shares require a back-ended or deferred sales charge. The
www.womensedition.com
advantage of B shares over A shares is that the full value of the money you pay up front immediately goes to work for you. The disadvantage is that if you own the fund for a long period of time, the total amount of fees you pay can be greater than those of A shares. After a predetermined amount of time, B shares can be converted to A shares, to eliminate paying the continuous back-loaded fee. C shares are similar to B shares in that they have a back-loaded fee, but the fee is lower. C shares are best for people who don’t intend to own the mutual fund for an extended period of time. The drawback to C shares is that they cannot be converted to A shares. To add further complexity (and also to get paid more), Wall Street has one more additional fee called a 12b-1 fee. A 12b-1 fee is an ongoing fee that is taken from your account for as long as you own the fund. This fee ranges anywhere from 0.25 percent of the value of your account to a full 1 percent of your account balance. So, if you have a 401(k) account to which you and your employer are adding on a regular basis, the 12b-1 fee you pay goes up over time, but you get nothing in return. The 12b-1 fees are over and above any fees paid by the A, B, or C shares. The recipient of the 12b-1 fees varies from situation to situation. If you purchase mutual funds through a full-service broker, those funds go to the brokerage firm and to the individual broker assigned to your account. The assumption is that the broker will provide you with ongoing investment advice for as long as you own the fund. If you have not spoken to your broker for several years, which is not out of the question, you are paying an increasing amount for nothing. Currently, there are individuals and institutions that are part of what I call the New Wall Street, who are working to bring down the cost of managing money so Americans can pay lower fees to have their money managed. Experts predict that, 10 years from now, investors will be paying a full percentage point less in fees than they are today.

SBT Hair Specialists Restore Your Hair, Restore Your Life
By Deanna Beal
Dick and Deb Koesters, the owners of SBT Hair Specialists, have been providing hair loss solutions for men, women, and children for over 23 years. They both came from a farm background in the Harland, Iowa area. Deb started in the hair salon and hair industry right out of high school. When they moved to Omaha in 1984, Dick decided to join her in the business. They opened a salon in the Old Market area. In 1994, they decided to focus on specializing in the most innovative hair replacement options available. Dick notes that many people with thinning hair or hair loss don’t realize that they can do anything about it. “People may not even be thinking about what their options might be,” Dick says. “They might not even know an option exists for them.” Dick recalls two clients who didn’t attend a parent’s funeral because they were embarrassed by their hair. After missing those significant life events, the clients realized that they wanted help with their hair, and that led them to SBT Hair Specialists. Dick and Deb work hard to find the best option for people to restore their hair and get back to living their lives. The hair specialists at SBT Hair Specialists offer free, private, confidential consultations to help you determine which non-surgical hair replacement, hair loss prevention and treatment program, or hair transplant procedure is best for you. First-time clients may be surprised by how many options are available, Dick notes. One of the latest non-surgical options for hair loss, thinning hair, and problems associated with the scalp is laser hair therapy. As described on SBT Hair Specialists’ website (sbthair.com), “Laser hair rejuvenation is a tested, proven method using low level laser energy, or ‘soft’ laser light, to effectively treat the appearance of hair loss in both men and women.” Clients are able to use laser hair therapy from the privacy of their own homes, every other day, for 25 minutes. “It stimulates the hair follicles to keep the hair growing,” Dick explains. Benefits of this method can include stronger, more elastic hair that is “fuller, shinier, softer, and healthier-looking.” For surgical hair procedures, SBT Hair Specialists is proud to work with Dr. Robert Reese, a board-certified surgical hair restoration surgeon. “Hair transplants today are so much better than they were 15 years ago,” Dick notes. SBT Hair Specialists’ website goes on to say, “Surgical hair restoration is a permanent method of restoring your hair. Once a hair has been transplanted, it grows for life. With micro-surgical hair transplants, the process of hair growth is not altered, therefore resulting in a completely natural and undetectable look.”

What Dick loves most about working in hair replacement is the real difference he can make in a client’s life. Female clients, he notes, often share that they don’t feel feminine anymore because of their hair loss. Once they’ve experienced the treatment program that works the best for them, many of them say, “I should have done this sooner!” For the hair specialists at SBT Hair Specialists, helping people is one of the greatest rewards. Dick loves seeing his clients’ confidence restored. One of SBT’s clients worked in a warehouse and always wanted to go into sales. He didn’t feel like he could make that career change because he always wore a hat, “and he wasn’t going to take that hat off,” Dick explains. The client decided to come in for hair replacement. Since his treatment, he has moved into sales and has done very well for himself. “It really changed his life, financially and everything,” Dick shares. Hats off to that! Many of the clients at SBT Hair Specialists have become lifelong friends. Dick and Deb’s business philosophy is to treat people “like family.” Over the years, they have developed strong relationships with their clients, sharing stories and getting to know their children and grandchildren. Dick and Deb’s niece, Lisa, also works at SBT Hair Specialists, and together they have created a very family-oriented environment. Clients are greeted with refreshments and conversation, which sometimes come from Dick and Deb’s children and grandchildren. Dick warmly shares how one of his clients says, “Thanks for changing my life,” every single time he comes in. “Anybody looking for hair replacement, it always changes their life in some way,” Dick says. If that sounds like you, get in touch with SBT Hair Specialists to help restore your hair and your life. SBT Hair Specialists serves the Omaha, Lincoln, and Council Bluffs areas. For more information or to schedule a free consultation, visit their website at sbthair.com, call 402-341-4247, or email them at info@ sbthair.com. Peak Performance
The Laser’s Edge Vision Correction and Beyond
By Loretta McCollum
Don’t be shortsighted when it comes to eye laser surgery options. Laser technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace. Today’s options go way beyond LASIK vision correction, though this is still a popular surgery. New developments allow laser eye surgery to address multiple eye conditions. First of all, what is LASIK? This procedure involves using a sharp blade to create a corneal flap, which is folded back, allowing a laser to reshape the cornea. The flap is replaced without the need for sutures. It’s usually painless, with minimal postoperative discomfort. Most patients’ vision is corrected to 20/40 or better on the first day. LASIK is very successful for patients with mild to moderate nearsightedness. Until recently, LASIK was very similar for most prescriptions, but custom options are now available. One option is iLASIK, an all-laser technology performed without the use of a blade. It utilizes “wavefront” technology to create a 3-D image of the eye, which helps guide the laser in creating the corneal flap. This 3-D image gives the surgeon an extremely clear picture of the eye, allowing her to identify other potential issues. Then, another precise laser reshapes the cornea. This procedure is an option for patients whose prescription disqualifies them for traditional LASIK. Epi-LASIK is a recent development that works well for patients with a thin cornea or for those whose profession (for example, police officers or military personnel) suggests that they may be
56
May 2017
likely to receive a blow to the eye. Epi-LASIK is similar to LASIK, but Epi-LASIK creates a thinner corneal flap, making it less invasive. Recovery time is slightly longer than traditional LASIK, and patients may experience some discomfort. A new innovation in laser surgery is Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE). SMILE is a good option for patients with more advanced astigmatism. It eliminates the need for a corneal flap by separating a disc of corneal tissue (which is then removed through a miniscule incision), reshaping the cornea, and correcting myopia and astigmatism. Research is ongoing to expand uses of this technology. If your eyecare professional does not recommend any of these procedures to correct your vision, she may suggest implantable contact lenses. A tiny incision inserts the lens between the iris and the eye’s natural lens. This is a good choice to correct extreme nearsightedness. It works by bending light rays onto the retina, creating clearer vision. Studies have shown that implantable lens surgery is as safe as LASIK. These days, laser surgery is used for much more than vision
www.womensedition.com
correction. Many eye conditions are now corrected with laser procedures. One such condition is cataracts, a common problem in older patients. Our eyes have lenses that refract light, helping us see clearly. When cataracts develop, our vision becomes cloudy and blurry. Laser cataract surgery softens the cataract as it breaks it up, allowing for easier and more precise cataract removal (as opposed to older procedures, which used handheld surgical tools). A detached retina is a serious condition that, if not treated, can lead to permanent vision loss. The retina is the layer of tissue at the back of the eye that processes light entering the eye. The retina becomes detached when this layer of tissue pulls away from the surrounding tissue. A laser “welds” the retina back into place. If the retina is completely detached, a more complex laser surgery is performed, during which a synthetic band is attached to the outside of the eyeball, pushing the wall of the eye against the detached retina. This procedure has seen great success. Laser surgery can also treat glaucoma, which occurs when the eye’s drainage canals become clogged, increasing eye pressure. Laser energy is applied to the eye’s drainage tissue, resulting in better fluid drainage, which lowers the pressure. There is more than one type of laser surgery for glaucoma. Discuss your options with your eyecare professional. Cross-corneal linking is a laser procedure that strengthens a cornea weakened by keratoconus, a progressive eye disease in which the cornea thins and bulges into a cone-like shape, resulting in distorted vision. The KXL System is a cross-linking system that uses liquid riboflavin and UV radiation to thicken the collagen fibers and stiffen and reshape the cornea. Some physicians recommend that patients undergo cross-corneal linking prior to undergoing LASIK. Navigating the maze of laser surgical options can be overwhelming. A consultation with an eyecare professional is crucial. She will be able to explain each procedure in detail and recommend the best option for you. If you suspect that you have an eye disorder, or if your vision changes suddenly, schedule an appointment immediately. You should also have a thorough yearly eye exam. With today’s available technologies, maintaining good vision is easier than ever before. Sources for this article included: allaboutvision.com, glaucoma.org, eyelaser. stanford.edu, and webmd.com. WE

Recreational Toys Aren’t Just for Boys Reawaken Your Senses Outdoors! By Julie Kuntze
Now that spring is officially here and summer is right around the corner, many people are indulging in their primal urges to explore the outdoors. It’s all well and good to go for a walk at lunchtime, but you might consider something more adventurous this year. Recreational “toys” aren’t just for men, and science tells us that the surge of adrenaline that is such a part of these pursuits can boost the immune system, improve focus and concentration, and generally slow the aging process. If you are new to adventuring, consider upgrading the basic camping experience with an RV or camper trailer. New models are available with all the comforts of home, from fireplaces and flat-screen TVs to kitchen islands and slide-out space for entertaining. Camping trailer manufacturers offer a wide array of options at price points from under $10,000 to more than $100,000. The lightest camper trailers can be towed behind many cars and offer just enough space for a bed off the ground, protected from bugs and inclement weather. Owners can choose to visit many places by staying somewhere new each night, or they can explore an area in depth by having a central base at a campground or national park. All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and off-highway vehicles (OHVs) may seem intimidating to the uninitiated, but there are enough varieties to fit almost any adventuring opportunity.
Designated trails can be found in many state and national parks, and they run the gamut from single-lane tracks (for dirt bikes and small-engine motorcycles) to competitive rock crawling areas for jeeps and other 4x4s. OHVs offer the ability to visit areas that are not easily accessible otherwise, and their unobstructed views are perfect for photography. When not out on the trails, ATVs can be put to work at home, with accessories like snow plows and garden buckets. Safety, of course, should be a priority. A good dealer will be able to explain different options and help identify the right vehicle for each person. If highways and urban roads call to your adventuring spirit, a scooter or motorcycle might be a better fit for you. Scooters place the engine under the seat (often attached to the rear axle) rather than mid bike, so you don’t have to straddle it while you’re riding. They can be quite sporty, and they offer great fuel mileage. Although scooters typically have smaller engines and are best for getting around town, riders must be

confident enough to share the road with larger bikes, as well as cars and trucks. Women are getting more involved in motorcycling, and manufacturers have taken notice. Experts recommend that women start with a smaller bike, making sure that the seat position can be adjusted so that both feet can easily reach the ground when at a stop. There are a number of groups in all parts of the country for scooter and motorcycle enthusiasts, from those who love their vintage bikes to others dedicated specifically to female riders. Boats and personal watercraft are great for individuals who prefer an aquatic experience. Whether speed and racing appeal to you or you would rather explore hidden coves and narrow channels, options abound. Boats and personal watercraft are similar to other recreational vehicles in that one size does not fit all. Women, in particular, should keep a few points in mind when shopping for their own craft. The National Women Boaters Association advises that when shopping for a boat, women should most importantly consider the helm. It should be at the correct height for the operator, or have a bolster or adjustable seat, in order to provide for maximum visibility. Other possibilities to consider include a private toilet, options that assist in handling (such
as power steering and bow and stern thrusters), safety features (like emergency beacons and depth finders), and comfort options (including air conditioning, heating, and flexible seating arrangements). Often known better by their brand names, including Jet Ski, Sea-Doo, and WaveRunner, personal watercraft are also popular ways to explore waterways. New models boast improved emission rates and range in price from less than $10,000 to more than $25,000. Personal watercraft include styles that seat one to four people, and they are quite popular with both singles and families, as they are easy to store, transport, and maintain. Features like cruise control, cup holders, and audio systems should be considered. While most buyers opt for sit-down versions, a few stand-up models still exist. Enthusiast clubs exist around the country, and members often travel together, provide education, and promote safety and waterway protection. By land or by sea, be sure to get outdoors, enjoy nature, and improve your health. Try something a little more thrilling this summer, and see where it takes you! The Good Life
Sit Back and Enjoy Your Mother’s Day! Enlist Help at Home to Make Time for You
By Ashley Anderson
Our lives are filled with things to do, places to go, and people to see. Between work and home responsibilities and caring for others, we often become so consumed with our to-do lists that we forget to enjoy life and those closest to us. We all need and deserve time to ourselves or to enjoy with others. The good news is that you can hire professionals to take almost anything off your list. Start by identifying the tasks that consume most of your time and deciding what you can eliminate or outsource. For example, one of the most common and time-consuming tasks is planning, preparing, and eating three meals a day. It’s a lot of work to precisely plan out meals, shop for the ingredients, and spend an hour cooking…only to be faced with the dishes afterwards. Eating can’t exactly be eliminated, but you can certainly streamline the process. There are a number of options available to help with this problem. Many grocery stores offer scheduled grocery delivery that you pre-order online. It’s like a personal grocery shopper! You can even tell them what brands or flavors you do or don’t like, and they do all the shopping and delivery for you. Another great idea is meal delivery—and I’m not just talking about ordering a pizza. There are many services that deliver prepared meals or a box of individual ingredients with a recipe for you to make. No more trying to decide what to make! Input your preferences online, tell them how many you’re cooking for, and the whole shebang shows up at your door, ready to be prepared. Another time-consuming task around the home is cleaning. We spend hours each month keeping things tidy. If you’d rather enjoy your free time without wearing yellow rubber gloves, hire a maid service. Most maid services offer custom cleaning, so they will come as often or rarely as you want. You can hire them to do all the regular cleaning, just the chores you hate the most, or periodic deep cleaning. If you have a large family, laundry may be the task that holds you back. You already drop off your dry-clean only clothes—why not have the rest of your laundry done, too? Many dry cleaners and even self-service laundromats offer laundry drop-off services. Some even do delivery! You’re probably aware that you can hire landscaping services to mow your lawn or shovel your snow. You can also arrange for fall maintenance, which sends a crew in at the end of autumn to get your yard cleaned up and ready for winter. Some companies also specialize in maintaining water features, which is a whole different league of yard chore! You can also hire a company to clean and maintain a pool or hot tub or clean your gutters in spring and fall. Check with your favorite landscapers to see what services they offer. Most people don’t mind shopping for clothes, but
60
May 2017
that doesn’t mean we have the time to do it. If you know what you like, why not have a personal stylist do the shopping for you? Check at your favorite local boutique to see if they offer this type of service. The more you’ve shopped there, the more they likely know about your size and preferences. If you’re less certain about your style and need some guidance, make some time to go to the store yourself for help. Many boutiques and even secondhand stores offer personal style consultation in their stores. If your home and family are large, you might consider bringing household staff into the picture. A nanny, of course, takes charge of the kids, supervising them and getting them where they need to go. A personal concierge is like a personal assistant—someone who can do everything from booking your next vacation to taking your cat to the vet. If the kitchen is the room in the house you’d like to avoid, you could consider hiring a personal chef to do the cooking. The largest household staff position is that of household manager. A household manager is not a housekeeper; she is an administrator who manages the household staff and handles household operations. This role is generally required only in large homes with personal staff and complicated schedules. The next time you’re out having coffee with friends, ask them what kind of services they used in order to find time to have coffee with friends. They probably have some great recommendations! Be sure to check references, and don’t let anyone work in your home if she’s not bonded and insured. Take advantage of some time-saving services, and use the time you gain to spend with friends and family—or even just yourself! Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival More Than Just Music
By Jackie Williams
“Held annually at the 78-acre Empire Polo Club in the beautiful Southern California desert, The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is one of the most critically acclaimed music festivals in the world,” says Goldenvoice, who puts on the festival. Also known simply as “Coachella,” this major festival is one of the best music festivals in the world—if not the very best. It consists of two identical weekends every April that feature top artists and groundbreaking musicians from all genres of music on several stages, in addition to art installations. Previous performers have included Radiohead, Paul McCartney, Coldplay, Prince, AC/DC, Drake, David Bowie, Snoop Dogg, and hundreds of other musicians. Anyone who loves music would consider Coachella the highlight of the year. Keep in mind while reading this, it is highly unlikely you will be able to buy passes at the initial sale for the 2018 festival. Of the 99,000 passes available in previous years (I’ve heard talk of adding more passes next year, to bring the number to 125,000), they have sold out in as quickly as 40 minutes. This year’s sold out in under four hours. That doesn’t mean you’re

locked out! Secondary markets will be ready to sell passes, with a bumped-up price, of course. If you have a stellar travel agent, tell her in advance and see if she can work her magic. In fact, using a travel agent is one of the best ways to arrange a Coachella weekend, since accommodations sell out months in advance, as well. Why stress out trying to find flights, car rental, somewhere to stay, and passes on top of that? Leave it all to your agent. Speaking of accommodations, you have anything and everything available. If convenience is the most important to you when attending Coachella, make sure you get the right pass and book an on-site tent. Better yet, go glamping in a Safari Tent, and backstage passes are included. If you can’t snag on-site accommodations, not to worry. Coachella Valley consists of nine cities (Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells, Indio, La Quinta, Desert Hot Springs, and ›››

of course, Coachella) so you have plenty of areas to find a hotel, resort, boutique property, time-share, vacation home rental, or campground. The city of Coachella is a great destination in itself. It focuses on its Mexican heritage and holds cultural festivals throughout the year. Take a stroll down Sixth Street and shop the locally owned businesses, take photos of the murals around town, and visit a park or two. Coachella has nine parks; the Rancho Las Flores Park is the city’s newest and biggest gem. Find your favorite stop for Mexican food and margaritas while enjoying some live music. Many tourists know Coachella Valley as a golfer’s destination. While golf is one of the main reasons people flock here, that is only one aspect of travel to the desert. There is so much to do and see, indoors and outdoors, that everyone will have a great time. The number of festivals and events keeps rising, so there is always something to check out, even if you make a last-minute visit to an area on a whim. Interest in hiking, biking, and wellness-related activities is also rising. When I visit the desert, I love staying in a hotel or vacation rental with a mid-century modern theme. It’s just so “Palm Springs.” Of course, we do go golfing, but we also eat. And shop. And tour around. I enjoy the flea markets, farmers markets, and swap meets. After we’re tired from a day of exploring, we get a massage and lounge around the pool in the warm (or hot, depending on when you go) sun. If you want more adventure, take a jeep tour of the desert or a state or national park. Try entry-level rock climbing at the famous Joshua Tree. Ride horseback along the foothills. Take a hot air balloon ride to watch the sunrise or sunset. Ride the Palm Springs Aerial Tram up to the Mt. San Jacinto State Park for either lunch or hiking some of their 50 miles of trails. It’s gorgeous up there— you would never guess you’re in a desert. You can even take a tour of all those windmills you pass when you drive or fly into the valley. There really is so much to do when you come to Coachella Valley. After your agent books your Coachella passes, plan to stay longer so you can explore the desert and have some more fun! Enterprising Ideas
Bellevue Travel
A Portal to Discovering New Worlds By Robyn V. Powell
Travel is one of the best ways to enjoy your time and educate yourself and your family. It’s a philosophy that Julie Imgrund, owner of Bellevue Travel, lives and works by. “When you see new places and experience different cultures, you realize how similar all people are, while still recognizing the differences—the things that make us special!” explains Julie. It was a high school trip to Mexico that first opened Julie’s mind to the wonders of travel. “l’d been bitten by the travel bug, and I knew that travel would be an important part of my life.” During her husband’s 24-year service in the U.S. Air Force, Julie lived in Germany and England. Living and traveling in Europe fueled Julie’s passion to see more of the world. When her husband was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in 1998, she pursued her dream of working in travel. Her job at Bellevue Travel provided the perfect work-family balance, and she soon realized she didn’t want to work anywhere else. When the opportunity presented itself in 2008, Julie and her husband bought the business. Owning and managing a travel business has been its own adventurous journey. The travel industry has undergone tremendous change, weathered some downturns, and no two days are ever alike! “It’s been quite a learning curve,” Julie explains. “One of the greatest personal challenges was learning that I didn’t have to do it all myself…learning to let go and delegate.” Julie has built a knowledgeable and passionate team; each member brings unique expertise. “We are constantly updating our knowledge and skills to keep pace with a rapidly evolving industry,” Julie shares. “Whether our clients want European river cruising, zip-lining in Costa Rica, or a wedding in Mexico or Jamaica, we have access to the most up-todate information on how to get them where they want to go.” One of the changes in the travel industry has been, of course, the rise of online booking. “One of the main benefits we offer is our ability to cut through all the clutter and find our clients the best value. While price is important, finding the lowest price is not everything, especially when it comes to travel,” cautions Julie. Searching for travel accommodations online can lead to information overload. “That hotel you find online may be cheap, but it may also be six blocks and a cab ride away from the beach,” Julie continues. “We will find you a hotel that may be slightly more expensive but has an ocean view room, is within walking distance of the beach, and offers fantastic food and easy access to shopping. It’s the insider information and tips we offer that can save people from a lot of headaches.”

Julie and her team go the extra mile for their clients. One traveler broke her tooth the second day of her cruise and couldn’t remember the name of her insurance company— Julie Imgrund, owner she called Julie in a panic. “Julie was just fabulous. She helped me make the necessary contacts, and I had my tooth repaired at the next port. Thanks to Julie, I was able to enjoy my vacation.” she says. “I’ve been booking cruises for several years through Bellevue Travel, and I just can’t say enough about the excellent work they all do.” Julie loves seeing the joy on clients’ faces when they return from their travels. “Sometimes, the first thing someone says is, ‘Where can we go next?’ When they’re thrilled by what they experienced, it’s very gratifying.’’ Building long-term relationships is also important. “We’ve been in business long enough to have worked with a family over a couple of generations. I’ve booked trips for young families whose grown children are now booking their wedding trips.” Julie has seen a shift toward more experiential travel—people want to partake in more activities and engage with the local culture. “We’re booking more trips to Italy and France for people who want to take cooking classes and wine-tasting tours.” Another growing trend is family holiday travel destinations. Busy families are moving away from traditional gatherings at a relative’s home, opting instead to spend the holidays at a ski resort or Caribbean island. It’s a great way to spend time together, discover new places, and take the pressure off one family member hosting a large group. Rather than buy presents for each other, the trip becomes the gift. What better way to write a new chapter in your family’s life story than through the gift of travel? Julie’s passion for travel has never waned—she has recently checked China and India off her list. She finds that the next best thing to packing her own bags and taking flight is making her clients’ travel dreams into reality. Visit Bellevue Travel at 1508 J.F. The Green Thumb
Fragrance in the Home Bewitching the Indoor Air By Sharon Knierim
Long ago, in the lands of the Arabs, Persians, and Romans, the art of perfumery was a well-understood phenomenon. The extravagant use of flowers and their evocative aromas was part and parcel of daily life—particularly in the lives of wealthy citizens. Today, we bring in floral scents in the form of bouquets, either purchased from the flower shop or cut from our own gardens. The effect is areas of yummy floral aromas inside our homes. In the distant past, however, it was not unusual for the ultra well-to-do to strew the floors of a reception room, banquet hall, or boudoir with rose petals. How many rose petals did they use? The typical depth of these petals was the height of a wine glass! Today, we have carpeting. I am not sure how to compare the intended results using rose petals versus carpeting, but I vote for the carpeting. At least, it’s more practical. Moving forward through the ages, strict religious practices sometimes frowned on excesses such as perfumes and body oils. Because flowers were the source of these essences, they fell out of favor with this group. According to historians of all things flower, the Renaissance was a pretty scentless time. Incense in church seems to have been the only exception. However, the love of flowers and their beautiful scents could not be ignored. The lure of flowers cannot be denied! Of course, they are visually beautiful, but their other gift to

us is the way they make us feel. Flowers, whether in a surprise bouquet or growing in a garden or by the side of the road, can make us feel a whole host of emotions—passionate, sensual, sentimental, or just plain happy. Flash forward to today’s flower lovers and flower growers, and—well, that includes just about everyone on the planet. We love to employ flowers and their scents to make a statement. There is even a “language” of flowers to convey just about every message possible in the human experience. Happy events can be marked by a bouquet or young plant; flowers are in league with newfound or sustained love. Grief is often accompanied by a plethora of cut flowers in all kinds of bouquets and simple living plants. Of course, there is also the popular practice of sending and sharing flowers on a “just because” basis. Who doesn’t love that?

Poets celebrate the effect flowers have on us as they highlight their beauty and their evocative perfumes. The lure to enjoy a floral fragrance is universal. What is the first thing you do when receiving a fresh bouquet of flowers? That’s right—you put your nose way down into the flowers and take a deep sniff. Let’s take a quick look at florals that can be used to evoke varying moods. Indoors and outdoors, flowers can be easily arranged and planned. Now that spring and summer are upon us, there are many choices and few limitations. Jasmine is a heavy and sweet fragrance. Some people do not care for this scent (or simply find it too strong), but jasmine does make a bold statement. Domestic violets, on the other hand, are lightly sweet and offer an elusive quality. And roses—what can be said about roses that has not already been said? The scent of roses can vary from spicy to delicate or fruity. Many hybrid and tea roses develop a delightful sweetness when placed indoors. These are the flowers of passion. Hyacinths are wonderful for changing the mood of a room. Whether they are used as cut flowers or grown in the house, hyacinths can and do perfume large spaces with their heavy fragrance, both rich and spicy. These are my personal favorites. Don’t forget the standbys found in many yards. No gardener can refuse a bouquet of newly cut lilacs. Their scent is magical and often reminds us of going to Grandma’s house. Peonies are popular, too. Their rich aroma lasts for only two or three days, but they are certainly worth picking and displaying in huge bouquets. Looking for something different? Try lavender, which retains its fragrance in flowers and leaves long after they have dried. If selecting flowers from your own garden, be sure to harvest them early in the day. Just after dawn is when growing flowers are at their most refreshed. At that time, their physical beauty and their lovely fragrance is most pronounced. If you’re lucky enough to be standing in your garden as the sun rises, be sure to take a moment to stop and smell the—well, you know what to do. She lives on a small farm in western Iowa and looks forward to sharing her passion for gardening each month with her green-thumbed reader friends. WE May 2017

Equestrianism is for Everyone! Enjoy the Benefits of Horses By Kathy Glow
“There’s something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.” This quote about our equine friends has been incorrectly attributed to many men over the years—former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and former United States President Ronald Reagan, to name two. While its origin remains unknown, it rings true for anyone who loves horses. Learning to ride a horse can be a fun recreational activity for adults and children alike, but it also brings a host of physical and cognitive benefits. Children gain a greater sense of their own bodies and coordination as they learn to ride. In addition to developing a strong core and better posture, they also learn patience and listening skills, develop longer attention spans, and learn to follow precise directions. By the time children are eight to 10 years old, they generally have the strength and body coordination to safely stay on a horse by themselves. This is a great age at which to begin riding lessons. You can find out about summer camps and riding lessons through your local newspaper or by inquiring at equestrian centers or tack and feed stores. Horseback riding can also be an excellent form of therapy for children and adults with disabilities. People with autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, traumatic brain injuries, and multiple sclerosis can benefit from using horseback riding to work on physical therapy goals. It helps patients to relax their muscles and increase flexibility and strength. It also heightens confidence and self-control. Riders can also work on social and emotional goals as they interact with instructors, volunteers, and the horses themselves. If horse ownership is something you’re considering, you’ll need time, space, and supplies. A horse needs a stable and a large area for exercise. If you do not have the space, you can stable your horse at a private facility. Costs vary, but plan on spending several thousand dollars a year on food, health care, boarding, grooming, shoeing, and other equipment. Children and adults who enroll in riding lessons and camps may soon learn that horseback riding can be more than just an occasional hobby. Some riders take it to the level of competitive sport. The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) is the national governing body for most equestrian sports in the United States. Also known as US Equestrian, USEF oversees competitions and breed shows within the United States. Riding styles and competitions fall into one of two categories: Western or English. Western riding features a larger, heavier saddle and neck reining to guide the horse. In English riding, a smaller, lighter saddle is used, and the reins make direct contact with the horse’s mouth. Western riding competitions are typically referred to as rodeos. They feature timed events such as barrel racing, calf roping, pole bending (running a weaving path through poles arranged in a line), and steer roping. They also feature horsemanship events such as cutting (separating

a cow from the herd), sorting (sorting cattle in numerical order), reining (running one of several patterns), and seat equitation (riding with control and proper technique). Events can be entered individually or as a team. Western horses tend to be compact and sturdy. The most popular types of horses for Western riding competitions are the Quarter, Paint, and Appaloosa Horses; however, many horses of other breeds have done well in Western riding. English riding competitions feature disciplines that show off the beauty and skill of the horse and its rider. The highlight of a dressage competition is the Musical Freestyle, in which the rider creates and choreographs to music an original ride of compulsory figures and movements. During a show jumping competition, the horse and rider are tested under various conditions over a course of obstacles. Saddle seat equitation is designed to show off the high trotting action of certain horse breeds. English-style horses tend to be taller and “leggier” than Western-style horses. The most commonly used horses for English riding are Morgans, Thoroughbreds, and Arabians, though Quarter Horses and Paint Horses are versatile breeds that can make the crossover. The International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) is the world governing body of equestrian sport. Aside from the summer Olympics, where equestrianism has been featured since 1912, the premier horse competition is the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping and FEI World Cup Dressage Finals. The World Cup Finals feature horses and riders from all over the world who have won various competitions and are ready to compete to be “the best of the best.” This year, the event was held in Omaha, Nebraska. There’s an aspect of equestrianism that’s right for almost everyone—whether you’re considering horse ownership or you’ve never even met a horse. Check with your local equestrian center or tack and feed store to see how you can get involved. Communication in the Digital Age Don’t Lose the Ability to Read Body Language
“The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn’t said.” —Peter F. Drucker With the majority of communication being non-verbal, what are we as a society saying when we spend more time texting and emailing than talking to each other? I’ve observed that this technology is used to make our lives simpler, quicker, and easier, but it has had negative side effects, as well. We are becoming a society that is highly concerned with getting things done as quickly and as inexpensively as possible. Because of this, we are not only losing the personal touch and connection, but we are actually losing our ability to read body language. “We’re losing social skills, the human interaction skills, how to read a person’s mood, to read their body language, how to be patient until the moment is right to make or press a point. Too much exclusive use of electronic information dehumanizes what is a very, very important part of community life and living together.” —Vincent Nichols I know that in my home and around the country, a constant conversation flows during meals when cell phones are left out of the equation. I know my grandchildren are growing up in a world where they have never known a life without cell phones. I also know they

understand the annoyance and lack of respect others feel when that phone interrupts precious family time at dinner. I am not going to say I’ve never answered a call, but I make a concerted effort to leave my phone off the table and in my purse in another room. I know that there are very few “emergencies” that can’t wait for a meal to be finished. “Body language is a very powerful tool. We had body language before we had speech, and apparently, 80% of what you understand in a conversation is read through the body, not the words.” —Deborah Bull It is imperative that we, as a society, don’t lose the ability to read body language. It is a crucial skill that can help in many different situations—from interviews, to sales, to simply expressing your feelings about what you are discussing with clients, colleagues, and friends. It is frustrating for me to see adults who simply can’t read body language. I have seen disagreements started simply because one person couldn’t read the non-verbal cues the other person was giving. Often times, these cues are not even ones we do consciously; that is why it is important to study and learn how to read people. This skill can play an important role in every aspect of your life. So stop and ask yourself, how would you rate your ability to read body language? WE
