Editor’s Notes
Yay, it’s May! Mother’s Day will soon be here, and I am reminded of some of my favorite celebrations, when my two grown sons were still little. There’s nothing quite like a lukewarm cup of coffee and a cold pancake with frozen butter on top, served on a wobbly tray with a freshly picked flower (complete with bugs), carefully placed on my lap while I’m still half asleep in bed. My oldest son, Adam, barely tall enough to reach the bed, was beaming from ear to ear while he sang “Happy Mother’s Day” to the tune of “Happy Birthday.” One year, I got a sweet gift from Michael, my youngest, that I couldn’t quite identify. It was apparent he had gone to great pains to make this paper-mâché gift just for me. “Thank you so much for the cute…cow!” I said. His reply? “It’s a dog, Mommy. But that’s okay; you can call it a cow if you want.” I still have the dog/cow hanging in my kitchen in a box frame. Mother’s Day has become a quiet holiday for me now that my kids are grown up and married. I take more time to reflect on memories that make me smile, like honoring my own mom’s memory. She was a single parent and the hero of all of her three kids, as well as a hero to over 50 foster kids throughout the years. Happy Mother’s Day, Mom. There are other, not-so-quiet fun things to do in May. How about the Indy 500? I wanted to be a race car driver in my youth. My brother taught me to drive on a four-on-the-floor stick shift. As I sat on pillows so I could see over the steering wheel, I sped through the abandoned dirt roads in our then “little” town of Prescott, Arizona. I’m not such a speed demon anymore. If you feel the need for speed, there is another speed demon in history who helped change the future for women. Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean on May 20, 1932. She gave many women the courage to stand up and take risks they might not have taken otherwise. The flower for the month of May is the lily of the valley, which represents the return of happiness. In my case, I feel like it doesn’t need to return…because it never really went away! Being a part of Women’s Edition brings me great happiness. Our group is composed of hardworking women (and men) who inspire me in the way they live their lives, both at work and at home. We all have struggles and events that try to steal our happiness, but the way we look at and live our lives is always a choice. Choose to find happiness in your own way. Live the life you want! Sunshine and the outdoors always make me happy…as I typed that sentence, I thought of John Denver’s song, “Sunshine on My Shoulders Makes Me Happy.” Just as John Denver did, we live in a state blessed with 300 days of sunshine. Get out and enjoy it!

Let’s Spoil Mom… With Summer Inspirations! By Holly Bell
Let’s show the moms, grandmothers, and other special ladies in our lives some love this Mother’s Day! With a little effort, we can bring that beautiful smile to Mom’s face. She has been there for us, so let’s show her that her hard work is appreciated. Sometimes, moms have a hard time pampering themselves. Let’s get her a head start on some much-needed pampering featuring thoughtful gifts with summer in mind. Warm temperatures bring thoughts of the beach. Even if you don’t live near a beach, you can pretend with floral and beachy scents! A gift of a wonderful lotion, perfume, or scented candle with hints of coconut oil and paradise would be welcomed by any woman. Speaking of the beach, how about a gorgeous beach towel for her next vacation? If she’s not planning a vacation yet, maybe your gift could be her inspiration! Doesn’t she deserve some time away from the pressures of her daily life? For vacationing or not, a woman always appreciates an easy, breezy dress. How about an effortless, cotton/linen blend shift dress? These are the hot trend for summer. So many women love the one-piece dressing aspect, along with the flattering shape, of the shift. Make some waves with floral and beach-inspired motifs on your mom (or yourself!). For the glamorous mom, a maxi- or midi-length summer dress may be just the ticket. You can’t beat the ease of a long dress—it’s appropriate for the beach, an evening out, and everything in between. If it’s a cool evening or you want some arm and shoulder coverage, just add a little bolero or tie a cardigan around your shoulders. All we need now to complete the look are some fantastic accessories. To go with her summer shift or maxi dress, let’s choose from an array of beautiful blue jewelry for the season. Blue is the perfect color for summer; whether turquoise, royal, or sky blue, it brings us the feeling of clear blue water and clear blue skies. Summer jewelry is so much more fun than jewelry for the other seasons! Brimming with starfish motifs, sparkling Swarovski crystal dangles, swingy tassels, or sand dollars and shells, a gift of summer jewelry is one she will bring out every year and think of you! Since the warmer weather is here, how about a gift of an island-inspired handbag? We all need to put away that heavy, black leather satchel and move on

to a brighter, lighter clutch or tote. Nothing completes the look of a summer frock like an adorable straw or lightweight fabric bag with some funky tassels or floral vibes. One of my favorites this year is a tote in white with gorgeous blue flowers, featuring the lettering “Seas the Day!” It’s a perfect and delightful gift for Mom, and for you and me too! Summer may be warm, but those evening breezes sometimes still cool us down after dark. Fortunately for gift-givers, that gives us another great idea: a scarf or wrap. A trendy new scarf can brighten up last year’s outfits, bringing fresh life to them. Some gorgeous selections this year feature a dip-dye effect, where the ends of the scarf feature bold, brilliant color that fades into pastel tones. Also fun are lightweight chiffon and cotton scarves that feature tassels and other adornments. Larger scarves have so many uses. In a pinch, your scarf can be anything from a table cover to a Brazilian-inspired pareo! All you need is a little imagination (and a big scarf). Another thing that makes a scarf a great gift—you don’t have to worry about sizing or fit. How about helping protect your mom from the sun? A hat is a thoughtful gift. Couple the hat with a bottle of SPF lotion, and your thoughtful gift gets even more useful. For the sporty mom, choose a cute summer visor or a patterned baseball cap. For the mom who

loves the outdoors, choose a hat with a brim to protect her while she is hiking, gardening, or relaxing on the beach. Mom will appreciate your thoughtfulness. One style that looks good on everyone is the fedora. It can be used as both casual and dressy, with not too large a brim. Many summer hats can now be folded up to fit in a suitcase or beach bag without ruining their shape! Such a great idea. Now that you are inspired to spoil your mom or the other women in your life, you may as well do a little spoiling on yourself. You know your mom is not the only one who deserves a treat! She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE

Rain International Seed Nutrients Vital for Healthy Life By Sue Teehan
Rain International is an organization that develops seed-based nutritional supplements. Their process taps into the most concentrated form of nutrition from a plant—the seed. Bonnie Edmondson, a Colorado native, represents this company here in the Pikes Peak region, under the name of My Rain Life. “A dear friend of mine heard about this product years ago,” Bonnie recalls. “At that time, it was only sold in Europe, providing supplements for children recovering from leukemia and other forms of cancer. My friend’s husband had just received six months of radiation for inoperable cancer. He used these seed products for several months, and for some time was diagnosed as cancer-free.” Bonnie decided to look into the product herself. “I was really impressed with the testimonials,” Bonnie continues. “People with diabetes have been able to cut down on their insulin and have had reduced inflammation. Those with migraine headaches and fibromyalgia problems have seen real improvement, as well.” Bonnie takes Rain International supplements for arthritis, and she attests that they have significantly eased her joint inflammation. “My partner, John Mach, also takes it daily,” she says. “A recent set of blood tests showed his numbers to be in normal ranges for him. His blood pressure has dropped significantly, as has his cholesterol. He says he has an abundance of energy now.” The seed-based supplement products are offered to customers in five ways. Soul: This supplement is designed to be taken once daily. It includes black cumin, black raspberry, and Chardonnay grape seeds. Also added is D-ribose, to fight fatigue and improve energy and mental clarity. Black cumin seed has been used by physicians for centuries, at least as long ago as ancient Egypt. Core: This product is designed to promote healthy function of the body’s organs in order to refuel, detoxify, and protect. It is a combination of ten seeds. Form: This product is gluten-free and vegan. It supports a healthy body and can repair lean muscle mass. Several athletes at the Olympic Training Center find Form to be rejuvenating. Revri: This product is a three-part skin regimen made from seed oil. Fused: Introducing the first Latte that can call itself “healthy.” This Latte is infused with the tent power of a four-seed blend with a naturally fast-free, coconut creamer at only 50 calories. Under the name of “Seeds For Change Foundation” (S4CF), Rain International supplies start-up seeds to small villages throughout the world. Instructors are sent
12
to teach the villagers how to grow and harvest the seeds. They also train people to grow produce for their own consumption and establish clean water wells. For every box of their seed supplements sold (each box contains a 30-day supply), 50 cents is donated to the foundation. Rain International is proud of their manufacturing process, which produces nutrients in higher concentrations than you get from eating fruits and vegetables. The seed oil is extracted through a cold press process, eliminating damage that can occur when heat is used. These five products have been tested by three labs, including Brunswick Laboratories, who found all of them to be effective nutritional supplements. Bonnie has spent her life living in and serving the public in central Colorado. She was raised in El Paso County, where both of her parents were employed by the county. Bonnie worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 25 years; when she retired several years ago, she had reached the position of postmaster in Fairplay. She also served as Fairplay’s mayor from 1994–1998. She has two married daughters and two grandchildren. These days, she volunteers in the Victim Services section of the Colorado Springs Police Department and stages free, informative meetings for people who want to learn more about the products offered by Rain International. “My presentation is definitely not a hard-sell one,” Bonnie notes. “I am a laid-back person, and I just like to have low-key conversations about what I think are fine supplements and their nutritional value. People are welcome to call to discuss Rain International or to make a reservation to come to a meeting.” She also gets referrals from holistic doctors, chiropractors, and physicians in the region. “I just want more people to know about the value of what I think is a terrific product,” she concludes. Bonnie can be reached by calling 719-839-1710. To learn more, visit Bonnie online at www.myrainlife. com/Bonnie. The Secret Longings of Motherhood By Sharon Knierim
There are about as many methods of mothering in this world as there are mothers. Each one of us has her own style. Many of us have learned mothering from our own mothers or other female relatives. Some of us have mimicked mothers of close friends who had a profound effect on us as we were growing into adulthood. Other mothers do a complete about-face in child rearing and act entirely opposite of what they were exposed to early in life. There are a number of us who were given a head start at mothering as we became caretakers for our younger siblings. We bring some bona fide skills into being mothers! No matter how we approach the raising of our children, we all want the same basic “good things” for our offspring. Who doesn’t want their children to be healthy? What mother doesn’t wish for the most attractive kids in the neighborhood? And, of course, we all wish for children with wonderfully high IQs, coupled with musical ability and the skills required for moving forth in their young lives. Do you recall what you wanted for your children when they were growing? This mother wanted her children to be
14
compassionate. Of course, that was decades ago, when they were still in rompers. It is difficult (if not impossible) to teach kindness and empathy to someone who still drinks from a bottle and crawls around on their hands and knees. Still, there were lessons to teach and to be learned using teddy bears and dolls. Was it worth the effort? Well, the jury is still out on that one, but I think there is compassion in the generation we produced. One mother once told me that her wish for her three children was that they would be the very best at everything they tried— they should never settle for second best. Now, that is a lot of pressure. Are those three kids the best at everything they do? I’m not sure. You would have to ask their mother. My mother’s wish for her daughters was the same as everyone
www.womensedition.com
else’s. That is to say, she wanted us to be smart, and pretty, and popular. She would encourage us in any way possible and did her best for us as we grew up on the farm. Unbeknownst to her daughters, there were plenty of pressures for our mother. There was, of course, the battle of the budget. Raising five children during the 1950s and 1960s took lots of work and planning…but raising five children, none of whom could share wardrobes or enjoy the fun of hand-me-downs from the closet, had to sometimes seem hopeless. All mothers want their children to “fit in” with their peers. Wouldn’t it be grand if all kiddos automatically and naturally fit into the profiles we set up for them? Well, we know that never happens. Anyway, who would really want that? It’s best and natural that each child finds his own way in life. Forcing a child to be a certain way is much like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. It can leave people feeling beat-down and unhappy, and it just doesn’t work. Over the decades, mothers and their children travel through lots of different phases. Personally, I loved the baby stage of childhood, when the little ones thought their mother was the most wonderful person on earth. Oh, but don’t forget the third birthday, when that baby slips out of toddlerhood and becomes a delightful little companion sans diapers and bottles. The school years always bring back good memories, but it’s also the time when we notice our children listening to other voices (not just their mother!) and marching to different drummers. Of course, they have to do this because these things are rites of passage into adulthood. Adulthood—that’s the magic word. Now that the children are grown and have settled into listening to their mothers again (oh, joy), they are absolutely wonderful human beings. Of course, they were absolutely wonderful human beings all along. Maybe it’s the leveling of being adults together that brings forth a wonderful and peaceful harmony. With peace and harmony, we are given the opportunity to reflect on all the wonderful talents and characteristics they each possess. If you are a mother, please have a wonderful Mother’s Day. If you are fortunate enough to still have your mother near you, take time to celebrate her and reflect on what a genius she is. And remember, like Mother always told you, say “thank you.” WE

When Family Matters The Importance of Family Law By Kathy Glow
Family law is an area of the law that deals with family matters and domestic relationships. It is sometimes called matrimonial law; however, a family lawyer can help settle matters other than those pertaining to marriage. Basically, any legal issues that a family—spouses, parents, and children—would face fall under the umbrella of family law. In many jurisdictions in the United States, the family courts see the most crowded dockets, with litigants from all social and economic classes. Between rising divorce rates and new legal questions stemming from same-sex marriage laws, issues are constantly arising that are best handled by an expert in family law. Marriage is at the root of most family court hearings, since there are many scenarios that result from marriage and may need intervention. Family courts can be involved in common law marriages, can dispute whether a couple is legally able to receive a marriage license, can rule in cases of annulment or dissolution of marriage, and can grant legal separations. Minors under the age of 18 can also petition the court to be emancipated (that is, legally free from the control of their parents). The issue of same-sex marriage was settled in 2015, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment fundamentally protects the right of same-sex couples to get married. This changed the legal landscape for many issues related to marriage, as same-sex couples now have the right to marry in all 50 states, and states are required to recognize lawful same-sex marriages performed in other states. However, some related issues will need to be decided by the courts in various states. Couples wishing to adopt children may need the assistance of a family lawyer. Questions over couples’ tax status, inheritance, and death benefits also may arise. Civil unions and domestic partnerships are also granted by family court. A civil union, while not a marriage, is a legal relationship between two people that provides legal protections to the couple only at the state level. Civil unions do not provide federal protections, benefits, or responsibilities to couples, and they may not be recognized by all states. Similar to civil unions, domestic partnerships are a form of relationship that gives limited state rights to both same-sex and opposite-sex couples who live together but wish to remain unmarried or whose marriage is prohibited by law. Where there is marriage, there is also divorce. Family court helps settle many decisions surrounding divorce. In collaborative mediation, a neutral attorney-mediator and a counseling professional work collaboratively with a divorcing couple to help them reach mutually acceptable agreements. They can bring a couple’s pre- or post-nuptial agreements to a judge, who will ensure that the agreement is upheld. If couples do not wish to confront each other in person, the courts can make determinations relating to the divorce. The court can award alimony payments to
16
one spouse; in some cases, palimony is awarded. Palimony refers to alimony-like support payments that are made by one unmarried partner to another upon splitting up after having previously lived together. When minor children are part of a dissolving marriage, the family courts are involved in making decisions for the children’s welfare. Issues of child custody are decided independently of all other issues. Child custody is based on many factors. If the court believes a child’s well-being would be jeopardized by one parent, that parent will not be awarded unsupervised visits with the child. If parents are granted equal and unsupervised parental rights, one parent (the custodial parent) is usually awarded primary custody of the child. Family court also steps in on cases of parental abduction. Because parental abduction is specifically a violation of the child custody order, many of the remedies in a parental abduction case are the same as those for any violation of a child custody order. Some of the penalties for violating custody orders are large fines, jail time, loss of custody, and loss of visitation rights. Child support payments are also handled as an independent issue in family court. Sometimes a custodial parent has to pay for activities the child engages in when in the care of the non-custodial parent. Family courts often require child support orders to be filed with the state’s child support enforcement agency to ensure that parents are in compliance with the orders. If not, parents can face stiff penalties, such as jail time or termination of parental rights. Unmarried couples can ask the court to order legal custody, visitation schedules, and child support. Family court can step in when a child’s paternity is in question. Paternity fraud occurs when a mother
www.womensedition.com
names a man as the biological father of a child, when she knows or suspects that he is not the biological father. Because no states require a mother who files a claim for child support to advise the court or child-support agencies when another man (other than the one she named) could potentially be the child’s father, men may be paying for support for children who are not their own. Certain cases of adoption may be handled by family court. In situations where the state’s laws are not clear, a judge may hear the case and rule based on her discretion. Many times, these are cases involving single parents, same-sex couples, or two families who wish to adopt the same child. Judges are likely to grant adoptions based on the best interests of the child, as long as the decision is within the confines of the law. The desire to have a child who is genetically related to at least one parent may make surrogacy a more attractive option than adoption for some couples. The legal issues surrounding surrogacy are constantly changing. A family lawyer can help couples and their surrogates interpret these laws and enter into a lawful contract. Sometimes there are serious reasons that a custodial parent should no longer have custody of a child. When issues of abandonment, neglect, and abuse arise, the court may recommend placing the child in a foster home. The court then works with the custodial parent to regain parental rights. In severe cases, the rights are terminated indefinitely, and the child is placed for adoption. Family court also presides over cases of guardianship, in which a decision is made determining who will be responsible for the medical, personal, and financial decisions of a child or adult who cannot care for himself. Family court also hears cases of domestic violence; in fact, the number of cases reported annually has been increasing. In some
jurisdictions, the court can press charges against the abuser even without the victim’s permission. The court can make decisions even in the absence of the victim. Abuse victims can also seek a restraining order or an order of protection against their abusers. Allegations of child abuse and child neglect are seen in family court, as well. The family court handles most cases involving youths between eight and 16 years old who are charged with offenses that would be crimes if committed by adults. These are called adjudication cases. This is a trial process in which a court determines whether or not the allegations contained in a petition are supported by evidence. A good family lawyer is a jack-of-many-trades. A client needs to be mindful of the fact that a family lawyer may be working several cases at the same time, so choosing someone with excellent time management is important. A family lawyer needs to be an expert negotiator as well as a skilled litigator, as cases may be settled either in or out of the courtroom. A lawyer with financial knowledge is key in cases involving payments and settlements. Finally, counseling and interpersonal skills are a must, as a family lawyer is working with a family during one of the most stressful and difficult times in their lives. Families and their lawyers often develop a close and sensitive relationship, as settling some cases may take months or even years. To find a family lawyer who fits the needs of your family, you can conduct an online search or contact your State Bar Association. It is of the utmost importance that you and your attorney have a good working relationship so that you can both take care of your family matters. Bio Adapt Fit
Short Workouts, Revolutionary Results By Amy Lynn Lopina
When entering the Bio Adapt Fit studio, you’ll see no racks of dumbbells or typical weight machines. Two high-tech motorized machines are at the center of this studio: the “Alpha” ARX Adaptive Resistance exercise machine and the more advanced “Omni” ARX machine. Both machines provide real-time computer monitor readouts as exercises are performed. John Dixon is the owner of Bio Adapt Fit. After attending the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, John served in the Navy as a nuclear reactor operator and electronics technician. After the Gulf War, John continued his education in electrical engineering and computer science. John has a plethora of career experience in the technology industry, including working for Hewlett Packard. It was John’s own health journey that led him to Bio Adapt Fit. “About nine years ago, I was putting on a lot of weight, and I started to experience ‘brain fog.’ I just couldn’t pull words out.” He focused energy into researching nutrition and fitness, and he made changes to his diet to improve his brain function and lose weight.
“I was doing high intensity training (HIT) exercises a few times a week. I lost the weight, but I wanted muscle tone,” John recalls. “I was inspired by Dr. Doug McGuff and his book, ‘Body by Science.’ His philosophy is that you shouldn’t do only aerobic or only anaerobic exercise—you need to do both. I was looking for something that would follow this philosophy. That’s how I discovered ARX, out of Austin, Texas.” “We’re the only ARX outfit in Colorado Springs and the second in the state,” John notes. “The other one is in Denver.” Enthused by his own results after three weeks of trying the machine in Denver, he decided to open up his

own studio in 2016. “I feel the most toned I’ve been since getting out of the Navy,” he excitedly shares. One of the things that sets Bio Adapt Fit apart from other gyms is the low time commitment. “A big advantage is the time savings,” John says. “You can get it all in 20 minutes, once a week.” The appointment-based system and computer readouts also help clients stay on track. “You have accountability here,” John explains. “You have your appointment scheduled. You can see your results from the previous week on the monitor to compare.” John and his wife, Alene, serve as the machine operators and ensure that each individual uses proper form and technique. “We coach and encourage our clients. We can coach you to muscle fatigue in both the concentric (pushing up) and eccentric (coming down) resistance. You can’t get that in a traditional gym! At a gym, you can push to your max when pushing the weights up, but coming down is gravity-assisted. It’s more difficult to get to muscle fatigue without a spotter. This equipment is unique in that way. You can get to muscle fatigue safely here.” Bio Adapt Fit caters to a wide range of clients. “With athletes, our workouts enhance their performance in their specific sport. It helps build fast twitch muscles,” John points out. “But half of our clients are over 50. They want to be fit and healthy for their retirement. Some clients have goals of losing weight. We coach whatever the client’s needs are.”
Craig Ward, 57, has been going once a week for four months. “I have lost 14 pounds and have built muscle strength,” he says. “I really like going there because I get in and out in about 20 minutes. It is intense, but it’s worth it.” Another client, Ed Santos, shares his experience. “I’m getting the benefits on the scale and in the mirror.” Ed has Parkinson’s disease and explains that dealing with balance issues causes a hunched forward posture. “I feel that I’m walking more upright now and have better muscle tone. I also like that I have their full, undivided attention. It’s just me. It is a very personalized feel there.” Client Tina Bretanus states, “It’s great to see your progress in strength from the previous week. John is very helpful and knowledgeable. I recommend Bio Adapt Fit to all of my busy friends.” Bio Adapt Fit also provides two hightech recovery tools: a whole vibration machine and a tri-band infrared sauna. John notes that both the vibration machine and the sauna help remove lactic acid, which reduces muscle soreness. The shorter wavelengths in the sauna, he says, help build collagen. “Most spas only offer far infrared saunas, which is good for you but doesn’t penetrate as much as the other bands,” John explains. “Our sauna has near, mid, and far infrared wavelengths.” Various memberships are available, and sessions are generally by appointment. Bio Adapt Fit is located at 6551 North Academy Boulevard, in Colorado Springs. Check them out at www. bioadaptfit.com or call 719-354-5360 for more information. WE

Redesigning the Garage The Final Frontier in Home Renovation
By Robyn V. Powell
Garage makeovers are one of the hottest home improvement trends in 2017. Once an afterthought, the garage has new status among homeowners looking to enhance their living environment with a clean, wellorganized, and functional space. No matter what your style, your budget, or your needs, the rapidly growing garage improvement industry has made transforming your garage into a tidy, functional space an achievable goal. From lawn equipment to sports equipment, the garage is a catchall room for everything we don’t want stored in the house but can’t quite bring ourselves to part with. The result is a cluttered and chaotic space with barely enough room left to park the car! The first step toward reclaiming your garage is to purge. Take advantage of a mild spring weekend to tackle the job. Place a couple of tarps on the driveway and remove everything from the garage. Decide what to sell, trash, or donate. How many rakes do you actually need? How about that broken toaster that you’ve been planning to repair for five years? The more clutter you have, the more ruthless your purge needs to be. Once you’ve pared down your items, you’ll have a better idea of how much and what kind of storage you need. Visualize your space and how you want it to function. One of the biggest challenges in a garage makeover is how to optimize storage space—the objective is to get everything off the floor and give
it a place of its own. An organization specialist can help you make sense of your space. She can talk to you about your vision, take a look at your space (and your stuff), and suggest storage solutions tailored to your needs. Smart storage systems use vertical and overhead space to maximize the square footage you can devote to storage. A versatile slat-wall system is perfect for yard tools, shovels, extension cords, and bikes. Overhead storage racks are ideal for bulky or seasonal items like tires, patio furniture, and sports equipment. You can also consider adjustable shelving, cabinets, peg boards, or drawers. Well-planned work stations can also be a great fit in a garage. Do you have a gardener, carpenter, or automotive enthusiast in the household? Install a convenient potting or tool bench. Consider lockable cabinets to safely house power tools and automotive fluids. Once you’ve cleared and organized your garage, that dull, bare concrete floor will really stick out. Turning a dirty concrete floor into a beautifully finished floor sets the ›››

foundation for the entire space. Once it’s finished, you’ll appreciate how much better it looks and how much easier it is to maintain. When you’re deciding on a new floor, you should consider budget and durability. Garage floors take abuse from road salt, motor oil, anti-freeze, and temperature extremes. Fortunately, there are paints and dyes specifically designed to seal and protect concrete garage floors. A multi-coat 100 percent solids epoxy garage floor finish is hard, durable, and attractive. Adding color chips creates a textured finish and decreases slipperiness. Floors will need to be cleaned, cracks repaired, and surfaces properly prepped before coating. Be sure to get competitive quotes for installation, and find out whether the prep work is included. Also, keep in mind that you’ll need to have everything off the floor of the garage during installation and curing time—your installer can tell you how long it needs to dry. As a prominent exterior feature of your home, garage doors improve curb appeal and increase the value of your home. According to a recent report from the National Association of Realtors, homeowners can expect to recoup 100 percent of the cost of replacement garage doors. Garage doors come in many materials, including wood, wood composite, steel, and fiberglass, as well as many styles, one of which is sure to suit your home. The best garage door opener is the one you never have to think about; one that’s efficient, reliable, and quiet. The best ones integrate seamlessly with your home’s automation system, with features like preinstalled timers for automatic closure and backup power systems so you’re never stuck during power outages. You want an opener with a motion sensor that will reverse door closure if it detects an object in its path. You can even go high tech with built-in Wi-Fi that allows you to close your door from wherever you are, with your smartphone. Homeowners everywhere are appreciating the benefits of a garage makeover. Whether you’re ready to invest in a custom makeover or you just wish you could find your hedge trimmer when you need it, creating an inviting and efficient garage is within your reach. Wave “Hello” to Summer With Confidence! Shape Up Your Arms
By Monica L. Davis
We’ve made it! The frigid winter months are gone, and Memorial Day is upon us, bringing summer gatherings, picnics, and pool time. Along with that come sundresses and bathing suits—unmasking the arms. Your arms spend most of their time undercover in winter, and now you want them to look great. It’s not too late to spruce them up for summer! Of course, your whole body benefits from exercise, but keep some specific activities in mind to tone your arms. You can increase the amount of muscle in your arms and shed fat by committing to an arm-focused workout routine. Choose activities that engage your upper body, such as kickboxing, swimming, weightlifting, or yoga. Fitness facilities offer many group classes as well as personal trainers to help you obtain the toned, chiseled arms you desire. Now, for some of us, it doesn’t matter how many trips we make from the vehicle to the house with shopping bags, how many extra arm reps we add at the gym, or how much healthier we eat. Our arms are never going to be as toned as we would like. Luckily, there are some cosmetic procedures available to help us close the gap. One method is Smart Liposuction, which improves muscle definition, tightens loose skin, and enhances the overall appearance of your silhouette. Smart Liposuction removes excess body fat and firms loose skin. After local anesthesia is applied, a small incision is made to insert a small cannula or tube. A laser fiber is introduced into the body through the cannula. The laser zaps the fat cells, and the fat melts away! Smart Liposuction recovery depends on each patient; however, most people are back to work within a few days. CoolSculpting is now available for your arms (as well as your stomach, flanks, and other areas of the body). CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved fat-reduction treatment that eliminates stubborn fat that sticks around regardless of all efforts made to exercise and eat properly. The best part about this treatment is that it’s noninvasive—no needles or surgery required! CoolSculpting works by using controlled cooling to freeze (and kill) stubborn fat cells. Your body then processes the fat and eliminates the dead cells. CoolSculpting requires minimal recovery time; you should be back to your regular routine almost immediately. The feel of glowing, silky skin is just as essential as having toned, sculpted arms. How do you rid your arms of unwanted hair? There are a few different options for getting the results you desire. Waxing is an efficient way to temporarily remove the hair from your arms, leaving them soft and silky to the touch. If you choose the waxing route, keep these tips in mind: Exfoliate in the morning prior to your appointment, take a pain reliever one hour before your appointment, and avoid caffeine for the whole day. For the first 24 hours after your appointment, avoid scented lotions and long periods of sun exposure. If you received an underarm
26
waxing, avoid using deodorant. For waxing services, you will want to visit a spa or a certified esthetician. The smooth results of waxing typically last up to six weeks. If only six weeks of hair-free skin is not going to cut it for you, you might consider laser hair removal. This is performed by employing a highly-concentrated laser light, which targets the hair follicles. The light permanently damages the hair follicles, which inhibits hair regrowth. The laser is very precise—each pulse only takes a fraction of a second, and many hairs can be treated at the same time. Some patients experience permanent hair removal after the first session; some patients will require maintenance visits to remain entirely hair-free. Laser hair removal is a medical procedure, so always seek a certified technician and be sure to check the credentials of the doctor or technician performing the treatment. Another form of hair removal that is often chosen for the arms is electrolysis. With this method, a very fine needle is inserted into an individual hair follicle. Then, a small electrical current destroys the hair growth cells. Several sessions are often necessary to remove all the hair. This is because individual hairs are in different stages of the growth cycle at any given moment. Once the series of electrolysis treatments is completed, this is considered a permanent solution to unwanted hair. Always seek a professional electrologist when choosing electrolysis, as these technicians have special training for the procedure. Don’t let poorly toned arms or excessive hair keep you from enjoying the summer sun on the beach, at the pool, or just around town. Get your arms summer-ready and then get out there to show them off! Recreational Toys Aren’t Just for Boys Reawaken Your Senses Outdoors!
By Julie Kuntze
Now that spring is officially here and summer is right around the corner, many people are indulging in their primal urges to explore the outdoors. It’s all well and good to go for a walk at lunchtime, but you might consider something more adventurous this year. Recreational “toys” aren’t just for men, and science tells us that the surge of adrenaline that is such a part of these pursuits can boost the immune system, improve focus and concentration, and generally slow the aging process. If you are new to adventuring, consider upgrading the basic camping experience with an RV or camper trailer. New models are available with all the comforts of home, from fireplaces and flat-screen TVs to kitchen islands and slide-out space for entertaining. Camping trailer manufacturers offer a wide array of options at price points from under $10,000 to more than $100,000. The lightest camper trailers can be towed behind many cars and offer just enough space for a bed off the ground, protected from bugs and inclement weather. Owners can choose to visit many places by staying somewhere new each night, or they can explore an area in depth by having a central base at a campground or national park. All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and off-highway vehicles (OHVs) may seem intimidating to the uninitiated, but there are enough varieties to fit almost any adventuring opportunity. Designated trails can be found in many state and national parks, and they run the gamut from singlelane tracks (for dirt bikes and small-engine motorcycles) to competitive rock crawling areas for jeeps and other 4x4s. OHVs offer the ability to visit areas that are not easily accessible otherwise, and their unobstructed views are perfect for photography. When not out on the trails, ATVs can be put to work at home, with accessories like snow plows and garden buckets. Safety, of course, should be a priority. A good dealer will be able to explain different options and help identify the right vehicle for each person. If highways and urban roads call to your adventuring spirit, a scooter or motorcycle might be a better fit for you. Scooters place the engine under the seat (often attached to the rear axle) rather than mid bike, so you don’t have to straddle it while you’re riding. They can be quite sporty, and they offer great fuel mileage. Although scooters typically have smaller engines and are best for getting around town, riders must be confident enough to share the road with larger bikes, as well as cars and trucks. Women are getting more involved in motorcycling, and manufacturers have taken notice. Experts recommend that women start with a smaller bike, making sure that the seat position can be adjusted so that both feet can easily reach the ground when at a stop. There are a number of groups in all parts of the country for scooter and motorcycle enthusiasts, from those who love their vintage bikes to others dedicated specifically to female riders. Boats and personal watercraft are great for individuals
who prefer an aquatic experience. Whether speed and racing appeal to you or you would rather explore hidden coves and narrow channels, options abound. Boats and personal watercraft are similar to other recreational vehicles in that one size does not fit all. Women, in particular, should keep a few points in mind when shopping for their own craft. The National Women Boaters Association advises that when shopping for a boat, women should most importantly consider the helm. It should be at the correct height for the operator, or have a bolster or adjustable seat, in order to provide for maximum visibility. Other possibilities to consider include a private toilet, options that assist in handling (such as power steering and bow and stern thrusters), safety features (like emergency beacons and depth finders), and comfort options (including air conditioning, heating, and flexible seating arrangements). Often known better by their brand names, including Jet Ski, Sea-Doo, and WaveRunner, personal watercraft are also popular ways to explore waterways. New models boast improved emission rates and range in price from less than $10,000 to more than $25,000. Personal watercraft include styles that seat one to four people, and they are quite popular with both singles and families, as they are easy to store, transport, and maintain. Features like cruise control, cup holders, and audio systems should be considered. While most buyers opt for sit-down versions, a few stand-up models still exist. Enthusiast clubs exist around the country, and members often travel together, provide education, and promote safety and waterway protection. By land or by sea, be sure to get outdoors, enjoy nature, and improve your health. Try something a little more thrilling this summer, and see where it takes you! Their patients range in age from 10 to 100. Dr. J, a graduate of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, and his wife, Sandra, have been serving patients here since 1984. Sandra is a registered nurse (Henry Ford Nursing School) and IV specialist. Dr. J refers to their clinic as a “resort practice,” stressing that his clients “come here as a last resort. They
are often the hard-to-treat patients who have not been helped in today’s hurried environment. We take the time to thoroughly and effectively listen to each of them. While other doctors treat a patient’s illness, we focus upon the patient as a whole.” Lea Anne, who earned a bachelor’s degree in organizational management and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction, oversees the Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method, developed in Europe more than 25 years ago by Dr. Tran Chanh, a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine in Paris. He originally created the program for Canadian athletes, amassing more than 20 years of research on weight loss and dietary behaviors. Following her personal success with Ideal Protein, Lea Anne

appealed to Dr. J to incorporate the system into his practice. This weight loss method features 70 easy-to-prepare foods, in a variety of textures, tastes, and flavors. Participants receive vital nutritional information to ensure success as they embrace their new lifestyle. “It is imperative to make such changes, recognizing that sugar is the enemy,” Lea Anne stresses. She adds that each product is a meal replacement, from candy bars and breakfast cereals to omelets, soups, and pancakes. The most popular choices are the pre-mixed drinks, cappuccino, and vanilla crispy squares. Clients exercise latitude in how they can savor the products. Some can be mixed with others to create a totally different food item: Blend the crispy cereal and chocolate pudding with other ingredients to create chocolate coconut zucchini muffins. Lea Anne emphasizes that Ideal Protein is individually packaged by serving so that the body absorbs nearly 100 percent of the protein. (Protein sold in cans can become compromised because, once it is exposed to moisture, the protein breaks down, diluting its effectiveness.) “We charge a one-time administration fee, but patients can come for the rest of their lives for maintenance. They can even come in and start over,” she says. The clinic is hosting a free event on June 8th: Meet and Greet Seminar on the Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method. The 30-minute social time begins at 5:30 p.m., and the seminar directly follows. Those eager to learn more about the program are invited to this gathering at Dr. J’s office, 3525 American Drive. Another colleague, Kim Brown, is a family nurse practitioner
who specializes in endocrinology, hemochromatosis, and hormone replacement therapy for women. She says her first appointment with new patients lasts about two hours and requires them to complete a 10-page questionnaire. Having worked for the practice for six years, she says, “I have finally found my passion.” Kim works with patients struggling with issues swirling around sleep, anxiety, weight loss, night sweats, and libido. She adds, “I, too, believe in treating the whole person, including hormone balance, thyroid, cholesterol, depression, and gastrointestinal issues, to name a few.” She prides herself on asking “the right questions” in assessing her patients’ needs. “Many women drag their husbands in after they have been successfully treated here.” Dr. J met his future wife while he was doing his internship and she was working on a surgical floor. Another nurse had pointed out to Sandra that Dr. J frequently came to the floor where she worked. “Because of our work schedules, it was nearly a month before we had our first date,” she admits. Their perseverance paid off, resulting in a 36-year marriage to date; a daughter, Lora; and two grandsons. Their professional partnership has also flourished. Early on, they embraced a vision: to integrate prevention measures with treatment, with their patients as the primary beneficiaries. Schedule your appointment or make a reservation for the Meet and Greet by calling 719-597-6075 or by visiting www.juetersonke. com. Contrasting Experiences
Instead of Looking Backward, Move Forward
When we finally understand that we all create our own reality, it can be a little disconcerting. After all, unless we live in Utopia, there are always going to be things occurring in our experience that are less than perfect. It could be relationships, health, work, or money. Are you appreciating the contrast yet? “Perhaps without the lows, the highs could not be reached.” —Stephenie Meyer You are most likely experiencing contrast if you find yourself asking, “Why in the world did I create this?” What most of us have a tendency to do is to try and figure out how “it” happened. We typically look backward and evaluate what our thoughts and feelings have been to get us to this point. A better approach may be to view it as the perfect path that we are supposed to be on in order to manifest our broader intentions. When I am going through something less than perfect in my life, I have come to realize that I don’t have the full story yet. “Don’t dwell on what went wrong. Instead, focus on what to do next. Spend your energies on moving forward toward finding the answer.” —Denis Waitley An affirmation that works very well is: “Everything is unfolding

exactly as it should be. The Universe knows exactly what I want and is in the process of delivering it to me.” Instead of looking backward, I am moving forward. Now, I am not going to tell you that this is always easy. In fact, it can be incredibly challenging. What helps me through it is faith and my past life experiences. I have often said that nothing bad has ever happened to me. I believe this. Have I faced a lot of challenges in my life? Of course. Have I learned from each and every one of them? Yes. When we are in the thick of a challenging situation, when we are experiencing true contrast, we need to step back and know that “this, too, shall pass.” “Just because today is a terrible day doesn’t mean tomorrow won’t be the best day of your life. You just gotta get there.” —Unknown Trusting that the Universe has heard our asking allows us to let go. Let go of the angst, let go of the action part of creating our own reality. It allows us to get out of our own way, which more often than not, is exactly what stops us from creating the reality that we keep saying we want. Know that the Universe has our back—always has our back. Make a decision to trust, have faith, and keep moving forward. Stop looking back. As a dear sweet friend of mine reminds me, you’ve got to keep swimming! WE

A Story of Four Sisters
Talking to Mom About Senior Living By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS
I recently came across a series of letters (round-robin style), written over a period of years, by four sisters. This is the story of those four sisters, from a family of 10, and how they navigated senior living arrangements. Brenda had two children and was divorced. Alison came next, had three children, and was widowed after being married only 20 years. Next was Lydia, who never married but was godmother to several nieces and nephews. After 12 years came Daphne, the youngest in the family, who had nine children and was married for more than 50 years. The sisters were active, liked people, and were interested in what was going on. All lived to their late 90s. The letters, about caring for their aging mother, began in the late 1950s, following the death of their father. Brenda didn’t like the idea of putting Mama in a home. “That’s where people go to die,” she wrote. “They don’t have anything to do. They’re around old people all the time. Mama wouldn’t like that.” Alison and Daphne agreed. “We all have families and are spread around the country. It would be difficult for any of us to take Mama in,” they wrote. Lydia commented, “Since I live in the same town as Mama, it wouldn’t be hard to get a bigger place with room for her.” The others agreed to chip in and help Lydia with expenses. The sisters kept in touch. Eventually, all four ended up living alone. Talk about “old folk’s homes” resurfaced after Brenda was
injured in an automobile accident and spent several months in rehabilitation. Brenda’s daughter looked to her aunts for advice. “Those injuries aren’t going to permit her to go back to her apartment with the stairs,” Brenda’s daughter wrote. The sisters responded, almost as one voice: It will be difficult for Brenda to adjust to a move. Today’s senior facilities aren’t like the old homes. She would be happier there. Sadly, the decision didn’t need to be made because Brenda died from complications shortly thereafter. Lydia chose to move to a senior facility when the stairs to her apartment became “too steep” for her to climb. Alison opted for assisted living after a debilitating illness. Daphne and her husband moved to a senior living complex together. After he died, she decided to move to another facility, closer to her children. What’s my reason for telling this story? These women made their own decisions to move into a senior facility, after discussing it with their children. None of them wanted to be “put” in a home. Each found a place suited to her wants and needs. The moral? It’s never too soon to talk to Mom (and Dad) about the aging process and possible relocation…even hypothetically. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Associates in Obstetrics & Gynecology State-of-the-Art Technology for Quality Care
By Brenda Gracely
Associates in Obstetrics & Gynecology offers a full range of obstetrics and gynecology services, from childbirth through menopause and beyond. “When visiting our office, you can expect to find a very personal atmosphere and the most advanced technologies available,” explains Jack Tubbs, MD. “Our goal is to offer patient-centered medical care based on mutual trust and communication. We work within a team concept, and patients are never rushed through their appointments.” Dr. Tubbs’ associates are Debbie Schlosser, RDMS, RVT; Mary Diane Link, RNC, NP; Lastenia Ryan, MSN, WHNP-BC; and Allison McCarson, DNP, CNM. Dr. Tubbs has added some additional services to his practice in the form of cosmetic procedures that can help you rediscover the body shape you desire. SculpSure is a non-invasive, light-based body contouring procedure designed to reduce stubborn fat deposits in problem areas that seem resistant to diet and exercise. It is possible to actually redefine your shape in just 25 minutes with absolutely no downtime. Patients can start to see results as early as six weeks following treatments, as the body begins to evacuate the destroyed fat cells; optimal results are typically seen at 12 weeks. Most importantly, treated fat cells are permanently eliminated and will not regenerate. Another body contouring process available is Smartlipo (often referred to as laser liposuction). This laser literally melts fat. The laser energy simultaneously tightens skin, which contributes to an overall smoother body shape. For most patients, results are achieved in a single two-hour treatment, with little discomfort and minimal downtime. Results can be seen within a week, with continued improvement over three to six months. Dr. Tubbs is also pleased to use the da Vinci Surgical System, a single site robotic surgery system. “The da Vinci procedure is a minimally invasive system utilizing a three-dimensional scope that is paired with a robotic platform to perform complex surgeries,” Dr. Tubbs explains. “With a small incision through the belly button, surgery can become an outpatient procedure, and there is virtually no scarring. There is much lower blood loss and lower possibility of infection. The biggest advantages to single-site surgery are faster recovery and much less pain. Patients are definitely better, faster.” Endometriosis occurs when a non-cancerous growth of the uterine lining migrates outside of the uterus, causing mild to severe pain, among other symptoms. Using the da Vinci Surgical System enables the surgeon to excise rather than cauterize the affected areas, which has been found to be a very successful treatment. The system is also the gold standard for pelvic prolapse correction. Memorial North Hospital, here in Colorado Springs, offers the da Vinci Surgical System and has reached a
34
100-case benchmark at this facility. Dr. Tubbs is a national leader in the use of this technique and is one of the most experienced surgeons in the Front Range area, having performed over 250 of these single-site procedures. The da Vinci Surgical System has brought minimally invasive surgery to more than three million patients worldwide. Dr. Tubbs also continues to offer the MonaLisa Touch technique, a medical laser technique that is a non-hormonal treatment for vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, and mild incontinence. “We are considered the center of excellence in Colorado Springs for the use of MonaLisa Touch,” Dr. Tubbs notes. “The laser delivers controlled energy to the vaginal tissue to revitalize the cells so that these cells make more collagen—an essential ingredient in vaginal cell health. This in-office procedure is virtually painless and requires no anesthesia. Patients receive three treatments, spaced six weeks apart, with each taking less than five minutes to perform. Most patients feel improvement after the very first treatment.” The MonaLisa Touch is appropriate for any woman who has gone through menopause, as well as those who are experiencing post-menopausal symptoms as a result of a hysterectomy or breast cancer treatments. Another procedure offered is the NovaSure treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding. NovaSure is for premenopausal women who are done having children and whose heavy periods are due to benign causes. It is a one-time, five-minute procedure that can lighten or end heavy periods without hormones and is an excellent alternative to a hysterectomy. In addition to surgical procedures and routine annual exams, Dr. Tubbs and his associates can be consulted for adolescent gynecology and counseling, infertility concerns, contraception counseling, and menopause management. Associates in Obstetrics & Gynecology is located at 8580 Scarborough Drive, Suite 100, in Colorado Springs and is associated with Memorial North Hospital. You can reach them by phone at 719-596-3344. Hearing Loss Is Not a Fact of Life Protect and Test Your Hearing
By Kylie Gumpert
Hearing loss doesn’t get as much press as heart disease and arthritis, but it joins them to round out the top three most common chronic conditions in the United States. Many Americans are not taking advantage of the treatments and devices that could help them hear better…and they’re not taking simple steps to protect the hearing they still have. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, roughly 38 million Americans have trouble hearing. It’s the most common disability experienced by those who live and work in combat areas where gunfire or explosions are present. Even noise that doesn’t seem all that loud, like a lawn mower, or loud noise that we only hear occasionally, like a rock concert, can contribute to hearing loss over time. Still, the majority of people with hearing issues—80 percent of hearing-impaired Americans—don’t seek help. Many people go 10 years or more before they seek a solution. Why the long wait? Hearing loss most often happens gradually. In many cases, the loss is so gradual that it goes unnoticed. Medications, infections, and exposure to loud noise can all contribute to hearing loss. Its severity can vary, and it may be temporary or permanent, depending on the cause. Tinnitus is the perception of noise in the ears when no such noise is actually present. Patients often describe the sound as ringing, buzzing, or static. You have probably heard this sound
yourself—it’s the ringing you briefly experience after you hear an extremely loud noise (like a rock concert or an explosion). With short-term exposure, the ringing is most often only temporary, and normal hearing returns shortly. The American Tinnitus Association estimates that 20 million Americans experience tinnitus chronically. Most often, chronic tinnitus is caused by damage to or infections of the ear and surrounding areas. There is no cure for tinnitus, but hearing aids, sound therapy to mask noise, and behavioral therapy to relieve feelings of anger or anxiety from experiencing these often offputting sounds can help. Hearing tests are relatively simple and may include a physical examination of your ear, a tuning fork test, which makes a ringing sound when struck, or an audiometer test, which involves listening through headphones and telling the technician when you hear noise. These tests may be administered by your regular doctor, an otolaryngologist (ENT), or an audiologist. A new hearing test from researchers at the University of Connecticut may be able to determine hearing loss earlier by

testing both ears together. Traditional screenings normally test one ear at a time, but testing both ears simultaneously may reveal a hidden hearing deficiency, even if a single-ear test showed a normal hearing range. There are many types of hearing aids. A completely-in-the-canal hearing aid is molded to fit inside the ear and is nearly invisible. These are recommended for mild to moderate hearing loss. An in-the-ear aid is slightly larger, filling the bowl-shaped area of the ear. It has more capabilities than smaller devices and is good for more severe hearing loss. Some hearing aids have directional microphones, which are helpful in noisy areas, or telephone switches, which allow the wearer to hear more clearly on the phone. Several hearing aids on the market can now connect to smart devices around the home, such as a smoke alarm or the doorbell, to ensure that users can hear these important and potentially life-saving sounds. Some hearing aids can even stream phone calls or music. In cases of severe hearing deficiency or deafness, a patient may opt for a cochlear implant, which is surgically placed inside the ear and directly stimulates the auditory nerve. This is appropriate for patients of all ages, even children as young as one year, so long as they are healthy enough for surgery. Worldwide, around 325,000 people have opted for this procedure. Because the cochlear device bypasses whatever portions of the ear have been damaged enough to prevent hearing, the type of hearing experienced through this implant is different from a fully functioning human ear. However, it can enable someone who was born without hearing (congenital hearing loss) to understand speech and sounds. The device’s processor can last for several years. Its battery and microphone will need to be replaced every year or so. Some types of hearing loss can’t be prevented, but noise-induced hearing loss is completely preventable. All it takes is being aware of the damage that loud noises can do to your ears and choosing to protect them. If you are regularly exposed to loud noise at work or at home, do yourself a favor and pop in some earplugs. It’s never too early to start protecting your hearing! More Move, Less Stress Hiring the Right Moving Professionals
By Anne Yankus
Moving is a stressful process, as anyone who has done so can tell you. Between cleaning, making sure nothing is left behind, and getting everything (and everyone) to your new home safely, there are a lot of things to accomplish in a short amount of time. While it’s impossible to take all the stress out of moving, there are certain professionals and services for hire that can really take the edge off. One thing many people have to deal with when moving is buying or selling a house. This does not technically require a professional—but just because you can legally do it yourself, that doesn’t mean you should. If you want to concentrate on the logistics of moving your household, hire a realtor to handle the pricing, staging, advertising, and showing of your home (not to mention negotiating the deal!). Mostly likely, you can work with the same realtor to find your new home and negotiate with your seller. It’s important to find a realtor you can trust to guide you through both of those transactions. There are a few easy steps to help you find the best realtor for you: researching her credentials, talking to her recent clients, and checking her current listings. When researching a prospective realtor’s credentials, you’ll want to look for Certified Residential Specialists (CRS) and/or Accredited Buyer’s Representatives (ABR). Looking up a realtor’s current state license should also allow you to see whether she has had
38
any complaints or disciplinary action lodged against her. Once you’ve settled the buying and selling your house part (or if you’re a renter who didn’t have to do that in the first place), the next thing to worry about is getting your stuff from point A to point B. For that, you can call up some friends and bust your back trying to shimmy your couch through the door, or you can hire a professional. It can be worth every penny. You’ll want to do some research before deciding which moving company to hire. A good starting point is to get personal recommendations and create a list of three or four companies for in-home estimates. Show the estimators everything that’s being moved, and let them know about any obstacles that may be in your new home (like distance from the curb and stairs) to make sure you get the most accurate estimate. You’ll also want to get each company’s contact information and their U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and MC license numbers. After selecting your ideal mover, be sure to get all the proper paperwork, like a bill of lading, the company’s liability insurance, and a timetable for the move.
www.womensedition.com
When searching for moving companies, you may come across the term “relocation company,” which is actually different from a moving company. A relocation company specializes in helping companies move their employees for work. If you’ve ever heard of a job offer that included moving expenses and assistance, you can bet a relocation company was involved. While this is probably an irrelevant process if you’re making a personal move, you may run into a relocation company as the seller when purchasing your new house. Another thing to consider is storage. Maybe your new house won’t be ready yet when you need to be out of your current one. For the time in between, you’ll need somewhere to store whatever doesn’t fit into your temporary housing. There are many types of storage available, including storage through your moving company, DIY self-storage, portable storage units, and climatecontrolled storage facilities. Short-term storage is nice for its flexibility, with facilities that are accessible 24 hours per day and month-to-month payment plans. If you need to store items for years rather than months, long-term storage might be a more economical option. (For long-term storage, consider a climate-controlled unit.) Last, but not least, is cleaning your old place before moving out. This is the part of moving that often gets forgotten until the last minute, which makes it really stressful. Who wants to worry about cleaning out the kitchen cabinets after you spent all day organizing their contents and packing them into boxes? Keep in mind that you can hire a professional cleaning service to clean your home for you! Some cleaning services even specialize in moveout cleaning. Outsourcing the heavy cleaning lets you focus on packing up your stuff—plus, they’re professionals, so you’ll probably get a more thorough clean than if you do it yourself. Now that you have a good idea of who to call to make your move as stress-free as humanly possible, you’ll be able to focus on all the important parts of moving, like enjoying your new home! Incontinence Managed Reclaim Your Life
By Linda Barnes
When 25–33 percent of American adults experience urinary incontinence, it deserves serious attention. Notice that I didn’t say that many people report incontinence—many don’t mention their problem, even to their doctor, because of embarrassment or the belief that nothing can be done. If you suffer from inconvenient leakage or troublesome frequent urges, take heart. Help is available. Urinary incontinence is defined as involuntary urine leakage or a loss of urinary control. Women experience symptoms twice as often as men, often due to the stresses of pregnancy and childbirth. Stress incontinence is when the weakened muscles of the pelvic floor cannot hold in urine when they come under the sudden stress of something like a cough, a sneeze, laughing, heavy lifting, or another physical activity. Urge incontinence occurs with an overactive bladder that suddenly contracts, even though the bladder is not full. These are the two most common types of incontinence. Incontinence in men is often caused by an enlarged prostate that restricts flow and stops the bladder from emptying properly. This is called flow incontinence. Men may also experience overactive bladder. Whatever the cause, incontinence has obvious negative effects on a person’s emotional health and social life. Thankfully, incontinence is treatable. Your family physician may be able to diagnose and treat symptoms, or she may provide a referral to a specialist, such as a urologist, who treats urinary tract issues. Physical exams provide valuable clues, and tests can help determine the underlying cause. Tests might include urinalysis, blood test, ultrasound, or x-ray. Risk factors for incontinence include being overweight, smoking (chronic cough), childbearing, advancing age, and certain diseases. Conditions that affect the central nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis, stroke, or Parkinson’s disease, may also cause incontinence. If underlying health issues such as cystitis, central nervous system problems, or enlarged prostate are causing incontinence, they must be addressed. Prevention may include maintaining a normal weight, avoiding (or quitting) smoking, and getting regular exercise. The good news about stress incontinence due to weakened muscles of the pelvic floor is that those muscles can be strengthened just like any other muscles. Special exercises (called Kegel exercises) can be done on your own. If that is not sufficient, you might need bladder training or physical therapy with a special focus on those muscles. A physical therapist may use biofeedback to teach you how to do the exercises properly. An estimated seven out of 10 women with stress incontinence will progress enough with these strategies to be satisfied with the improvement. Wouldn’t that be worth the effort? Think of the boost to your selfconfidence. Medications are a less frequent cause of incontinence. Your health professional will want to consider whether

prescriptions such as those for blood pressure, sleeping aids, sedatives, or muscle relaxants might be implicated. Alcohol overuse or urinary tract infections could be causing symptoms, as well. Urge incontinence may require different treatment strategies. The sudden urge to urinate might be triggered by miscommunication between bladder and brain. Treatment may involve lifestyle changes, medication, or, possibly, surgery. Medications such as anticholinergics can help calm an overactive bladder. Newer treatments include a neurostimulator known as InterStim, which sends gentle electrical pulses to the sacral nerve to help with bladder control. Medicare and many insurance plans will cover a trial period, with an external device, to determine its effectiveness for you. For long-term therapy, the device is implanted. Botox may help some cases of overactive bladder through minimally invasive injection treatments. Platelet-rich plasma (known as the O-shot) is a newer injection that is said to enhance female sexual function and also relieve some symptoms of incontinence. Several surgical options are available when less invasive strategies prove inadequate. For women, devices can support the bladder and help prevent leakage. A mesh sling may provide relief by lifting the bladder neck. An artificial valve is another option that works by controlling flow. Several much-improved catheters are also available. With a little practice, users can return to normal activities. If you’re experiencing urine leakage or loss of bladder control, you can still live life to the fullest and enjoy your favorite pursuits. Find a physician, physical therapist, or personal trainer (or a combination of professionals) to help put the joy back in your life. With the latest techniques, medications, and products, it will absolutely be worth the effort. The Laser’s Edge Vision Correction and Beyond
By Loretta McCollum
Don’t be shortsighted when it comes to eye laser surgery options. Laser technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace. Today’s options go way beyond LASIK vision correction, though this is still a popular surgery. New developments allow laser eye surgery to address multiple eye conditions. First of all, what is LASIK? This procedure involves using a sharp blade to create a corneal flap, which is folded back, allowing a laser to reshape the cornea. The flap is replaced without the need for sutures. It’s usually painless, with minimal postoperative discomfort. Most patients’ vision is corrected to 20/40 or better on the first day. LASIK is very successful for patients with mild to moderate nearsightedness. Until recently, LASIK was very similar for most prescriptions, but custom options are now available. One option is iLASIK, an all-laser technology performed without the use of a blade. It utilizes “wavefront” technology to create a 3-D image of the eye, which helps guide the laser in creating the corneal flap. This 3-D image gives the surgeon an extremely clear picture of the eye, allowing her to identify other potential issues. Then, another precise laser reshapes the cornea. This procedure is an option for patients whose prescription disqualifies them for traditional LASIK. Epi-LASIK is a recent development that works well for patients with a thin cornea or for those whose profession (for example, police officers or military personnel) suggests that they may be
likely to receive a blow to the eye. Epi-LASIK is similar to LASIK, but Epi-LASIK creates a thinner corneal flap, making it less invasive. Recovery time is slightly longer than traditional LASIK, and patients may experience some discomfort. A new innovation in laser surgery is Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE). SMILE is a good option for patients with more advanced astigmatism. It eliminates the need for a corneal flap by separating a disc of corneal tissue (which is then removed through a miniscule incision), reshaping the cornea, and correcting myopia and astigmatism. Research is ongoing to expand uses of this technology. If your eyecare professional does not recommend any of these procedures to correct your vision, she may suggest implantable contact lenses. A tiny incision inserts the lens between the iris and the eye’s natural lens. This is a good choice to correct extreme nearsightedness. It works by bending light rays onto the retina, creating clearer vision. Studies have shown that implantable lens surgery is as safe as LASIK. These days, laser surgery is used for much more than vision

correction. Many eye conditions are now corrected with laser procedures. One such condition is cataracts, a common problem in older patients. Our eyes have lenses that refract light, helping us see clearly. When cataracts develop, our vision becomes cloudy and blurry. Laser cataract surgery softens the cataract as it breaks it up, allowing for easier and more precise cataract removal (as opposed to older procedures, which used handheld surgical tools). A detached retina is a serious condition that, if not treated, can lead to permanent vision loss. The retina is the layer of tissue at the back of the eye that processes light entering the eye. The retina becomes detached when this layer of tissue pulls away from the surrounding tissue. A laser “welds” the retina back into place. If the retina is completely detached, a more complex laser surgery is performed, during which a synthetic band is attached to the outside of the eyeball, pushing the wall of the eye against the detached retina. This procedure has seen great success. Laser surgery can also treat glaucoma, which occurs when the eye’s drainage canals become clogged, increasing eye pressure. Laser energy is applied to the eye’s drainage tissue, resulting in better fluid drainage, which lowers the pressure. There is more than one type of laser surgery for glaucoma. Discuss your options with your eyecare professional. Cross-corneal linking is a laser procedure that strengthens a cornea weakened by keratoconus, a progressive eye disease in which the cornea thins and bulges into a cone-like shape, resulting in distorted vision. The KXL System is a cross-linking system that uses liquid riboflavin and UV radiation to thicken the collagen fibers and stiffen and reshape the cornea. Some physicians recommend that patients undergo cross-corneal linking prior to undergoing LASIK. Navigating the maze of laser surgical options can be overwhelming. A consultation with an eyecare professional is crucial. She will be able to explain each procedure in detail and recommend the best option for you. If you suspect that you have an eye disorder, or if your vision changes suddenly, schedule an appointment immediately. You should also have a thorough yearly eye exam. Positive Perspective
Communication in the Digital Age Don’t Lose the Ability to Read Body Language
“The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn’t said.” —Peter F. Drucker With the majority of communication being non-verbal, what are we as a society saying when we spend more time texting and emailing than talking to each other? I’ve observed that this technology is used to make our lives simpler, quicker, and easier, but it has had negative side effects, as well. We are becoming a society that is highly concerned with getting things done as quickly and as inexpensively as possible. Because of this, we are not only losing the personal touch and connection, but we are actually losing our ability to read body language. “We’re losing social skills, the human interaction skills, how to read a person’s mood, to read their body language, how to be patient until the moment is right to make or press a point. Too much exclusive use of electronic information dehumanizes what is a very, very important part of community life and living together.” —Vincent Nichols I know that in my home and around the country, a constant conversation flows during meals when cell phones are left out of the equation. I know my grandchildren are growing up in a world where they have never known a life without cell phones. I also know they

understand the annoyance and lack of respect others feel when that phone interrupts precious family time at dinner. I am not going to say I’ve never answered a call, but I make a concerted effort to leave my phone off the table and in my purse in another room. I know that there are very few “emergencies” that can’t wait for a meal to be finished. “Body language is a very powerful tool. We had body language before we had speech, and apparently, 80% of what you understand in a conversation is read through the body, not the words.” —Deborah Bull It is imperative that we, as a society, don’t lose the ability to read body language. It is a crucial skill that can help in many different situations—from interviews, to sales, to simply expressing your feelings about what you are discussing with clients, colleagues, and friends. It is frustrating for me to see adults who simply can’t read body language. I have seen disagreements started simply because one person couldn’t read the non-verbal cues the other person was giving. Often times, these cues are not even ones we do consciously; that is why it is important to study and learn how to read people. This skill can play an important role in every aspect of your life. So stop and ask yourself, how would you rate your ability to read body language? WE
