Ask, and You Shall Receive! So…I got a new kitty! I have had my cat, Pickles, since 2010. She is part Bengal and is not the most “friendly” cat you have met. (I joke and say she is just a step away from wild!) For the last six months, I have been considering bringing a new kitty into my home to keep Pickles company. I knew it had to be a kitten…otherwise, it wouldn’t work with Pickles’ disposition! Well, guess what? The kitty found me! A few weeks ago, my friend and general manager of my other business, Bricks & Mortar Bar and Bistro, Manny Chavez, was at my house and heard meowing coming from my garage. We looked all over the garage and couldn’t find it. The next day, I still heard the meowing. I put out some food and water—and later that day, it was gone. Manny decided he was going to sit in my car and see if the kitty would come out. After 20 minutes, I backed my car out of the garage. We still heard meowing, but now it was coming from my car, in the driveway. Finally, we realized that the sound was coming from the engine! Manny asked, “What are you going to do with it?” I realized that it was not a feral cat…it was tiny, but it knew how to use a litter box and was incredibly affectionate. After checking with neighbors and making sure she wasn’t microchipped, I decided to keep “her.” When I took her to the vet, I got my next surprise—she turned out to be a he! He got a clean bill of health, weighing in at 2 pounds, 6 ounces. I named him Little Stinker. I followed the advice of the “cat professionals” and kept Pickles and Little Stinker separated for a good 10 days. Now? They are the best of friends. It’s amazing how you can put a thought out there and the universe delivers. The only downside? I am now officially a “cat lady.” Check out our Facebook page for pictures at www.facebook.com/ WomensEditionOmaha. Lastly, I would like to extend my greatest gratitude and happy wishes to Roxy Orr on her 29th anniversary here at Women’s Edition! She has been through it all (almost) with me, and I appreciate everything she has done and continues to do for this publication. Thank you, Roxy!

Turning Over a New Leaf Welcome, Spring Fashions! By Holly Bell
Nothing says spring like a soft palette of pastels and light fabrics that catch the wind. Like a breath of fresh air, the femininity of spring fashion will buoy you up. Let the new spring collections awaken your senses and inspire a fresh take on your personal style. The lightness of spring fabric is refreshing after so many weeks of bulky winter clothes. Mixed with the season’s fresh new navy and nautical looks, pastels can create a whole new world of color combinations for you. Pink is particularly alluring this year. “Women should look for pink in every shade,” says Ken Downing, fashion director of luxury chain Neiman Marcus. It always creates a flattering glow when worn near the face. The blues of spring look great with pink, as does denim. When you hear the words “denim” or “jeans,” you naturally think of blue, but stores are carrying denim in every pastel color this year, from yellow to mint green. Jeans are always an important part of every woman’s wardrobe. In 2017, we have some very original offerings. In addition to jeans with colorful patches and sewn-on embellishments come the jeans with painted-on artistry. There are jeans for everyone now, with the advent of stretch fabrics and the boyfriend jean. Even if it requires trying on 20 pairs, don’t give up! There is a style of jeans out there that will work for you. Once you have found the right cut, brand, and wash for your body, you’ll be glad you made the time and effort. Spring is a great time to dress up your denim. Adding a cute jacket or even a vest can elevate your jeans and t-shirt into a put-together outfit. Actually, anything goes with jeans if you just open your mind to it. Do you have a sparkly top that you thought was just for the holidays? Make it sweet with a pair of jeans and boots. Still holding onto a suit jacket you haven’t worn in a couple of years? Make it cool again, when worn with jeans. Don’t forget to add the trendy roll-up to the bottom of your jeans. Showing off a slim ankle and a pretty sandal is a very youthful look. Botanical prints are particularly popular this season, since the Pantone color of the year is “greenery.” Nothing says fresh and springy more than a whimsical botanical print. Couple that with the still-popular “cold shoulder” look, and you will definitely be on trend this year. Flaunt those shoulders this spring. Bare shoulders, shoulders with cutouts, shoulders with sewn-on embellishments—it’s the biggest look of the season. At least a couple of these need to be added to your closet. Everyone has a pretty shoulder! Don’t be afraid to show it off. One ongoing trend we can’t ignore is the athleisure look. Born out of ugly sweatpants, designers hit upon the great idea of making workout clothes good-
Spring 2017 looking and wearable. When mixed with casual everyday jackets and tops, athleisure can be worn pretty much anywhere these days, but use discretion. Headto-toe athletic wear should stay in the gym (or at least coming and going to your workout). Abuse will relegate a good thing into the worn-out sweatpants heap. Stripes are always a popular trend in spring and summer, and they work well with the nautical-themed clothing of the season. How do you wear stripes? A lot of people think they can’t wear stripes because they aren’t flattering and will make a

A diagonal stripe is very flattering and actually slimming! A narrow stripe is flattering, also, both horizontally and vertically. A fun trend this year is mixing stripes with patterns. Stripes and dots are a pretty easy mix to do as long as they are in the same color palette. If you’re feeling a little bolder, try stripes with a small floral pattern. You will be surprised at how modern and fresh it looks. As long as the background or predominant color is the same, you can be adventurous when mixing patterns with stripes. Let spring’s warmer temperatures take over your closet with softly flowing light fabrics, crisp nautical looks, and whimsical floral patterns. Consider adding a spectrum of pastels to freshen up last year’s spring wardrobe. Take a deep breath and enjoy the blue skies and budding flora. Now that the warmer temperatures are finally here to stay, it’s time to blossom into a pretty girl all over again. Spring Vegetable Saute Melt 2 Tablespoons of butter in a skillet. Add 2 Tablespoons of olive oil and the following veggies: 1 cup of sliced red onion, 3 sliced red potatoes, 2 sliced carrots, 1 pound of trimmed fresh asparagus, and one-half pound of green beans. Pour in one-half cup of orange juice. Stir-fry for 8–10 minutes. Add more orange juice or water, if desired. Season with salt and pepper.
teaspoon of kosher salt, and one-fourth teaspoon of ground black pepper. Pat two 8-ounce skirt or flank steaks with this mixture. Wrap the steaks in cellophane. (Refrigerate, if you are not cooking them right away.) Heat up a cast iron skillet, and then add 2 Tablespoons of butter. Sear the steaks for 4 minutes on one side, 2–3 minutes on the other. Let rest for 5 minutes. You can also do these on the grill!
Baked Asparagus Casserole Cut 2 bunches of asparagus into 1-inch pieces. Boil for 3 minutes, and then remove from heat and drain. Place asparagus into a 2-quart casserole dish. Beat together 3 eggs, 1 cup of milk, one-half teaspoon each of salt and pepper, 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese, three-fourths cup of cracker crumbs (like a Ritz), and 1 small jar of drained pimientos. Pour the egg mixture over the asparagus mixture. Drizzle 2 Tablespoons of melted butter over the top. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
Beef or Chicken Sliders Open a package of slider size rolls (like Hawaiian) and slice the whole package horizontally. Place the bottom layer of the rolls on a cookie sheet or baking dish. Mix together herbs of your choice, 1 pound of cooked hamburger or shredded rotisserie chicken, 1 small can of crushed pineapple, and 1 cup of barbecue sauce. Spread the meat mixture over the bottom layer of the rolls and sprinkle 2 cups of jack cheese over the top. Replace the top of the rolls and brush with melted butter. Bake at 350 degrees for 6–8 minutes. Slice and serve.
Holiday Glazed Ham Combine 1 cup of bourbon, 1 cup of cola, one-half cup of brown sugar, one-fourth cup of Dijon or spicy brown mustard, and one-half cup of honey. Simmer for 8–10 minutes until mixture is reduced, thick, and syrupy. Place a 5–8-pound cooked ham in a large foil-lined baking dish. Score the top of the ham and dot with whole cloves. Pour the glaze over the top and seal with foil. Bake at 325 degrees for 2 hours.
Easter Nests Slowly melt 12 ounces of chocolate chips and three-fourths cup of peanut butter until smooth. Stir in 5 cups of Chinese noodles; stir well to coat. Drop a 2-Tablespoon amount of the mixture onto a cookie sheet lined with wax paper. Use your thumb to make an indentation in the middle (forming a nest). Add 3–4 mini jelly bird or candy-coated eggs. Refrigerate.

Totally Vein
The Destination for Life-Changing Vein Treatments
By Robyn V. Powell
Each year, millions of Americans suffer from the debilitating and embarrassing symptoms associated with varicose veins. Until recently, the only treatment for painful and unsightly varicose veins was major surgery, leaving many people with no choice but to live with unpleasant symptoms. Thanks to the development of innovative, minimally invasive techniques, treatment options have radically improved. Revolutionary procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis and delivered virtually pain-free. Patients now experience rapid recovery and excellent long-term results. Totally Vein is the only surgery practice in Nebraska specializing exclusively in vein care. Stephen D. Torpy, MD, FACS, is the founder of Totally Vein. He has practiced vascular surgery for over 25 years and is a leader in introducing minimally invasive vein treatments to the Omaha area. “For such a long time, the only treatment was vein stripping, an invasive and painful surgery,” Dr. Torpy says. “The evolution of new techniques has patients back on their feet quickly, with a rapid return to normal activities.” Venous reflux disease is extremely common but not commonly treated. Of the 30 million people affected in the United States, only 1.9 million seek treatment. Without treatment, many will experience worsening symptoms, such as swollen legs, discomfort, and skin damage. Healthy leg veins contain valves that open and close to assist the return of blood back to the heart. Venous reflux disease develops when these valves no longer function properly, causing blood to pool in the legs and leading to symptoms that may include varicose veins, leg or ankle swelling, leg heaviness, fatigue, pain, aching or cramping, rashes, ulcers, and sores. The leading risk factor for venous reflux disease is a positive family history for the disease, but age, gender, multiple pregnancies, obesity, heavy lifting, and prolonged standing can also increase your risk. The typical patient is female, aged 30–50 years, but men are also affected. Dr. Torpy’s team includes his wife, Jacqueline Torpy (RN, BSN); an ultrasound vascular technician, Ric Wyrens (RRT, RVT); and Dr. Kelly Schroeder. They are devoted to helping patients feel and look their very best, and they use a personal approach. “Our staff is with patients every step of the way. We explain all options and address any questions and concerns,” Dr. Torpy shares. “Together, we develop a customized treatment plan that will work best for the patient and her lifestyle. We offer our patients full diagnostic services and a choice of treatment options. By the time a patient leaves, she has a diagnosis and a treatment plan. In most cases, when conservative management has not worked for symptomatic varicose veins, insurance covers treatment.” The right treatment choice depends very much on each patient’s veins. Patients are evaluated using ultrasound to diagnose the underlying cause of varicose veins. Large visible
12

veins are removed through tiny incisions in a procedure known as a phlebectomy. Less visible veins are permanently closed off by means of a heated catheter, which allows blood to be rerouted through nearby healthy veins. The newest treatment for closing off veins requires no anesthetic and delivers Stephen D. Torpy, MD, FACS a small amount of a specially formulated medical adhesive to seal the vein. This treatment has been available in the United States for just 18 months, and Totally Vein is the only clinic in Omaha where it is available. Although not yet covered by insurance, Dr. Torpy explains, “it is ideal for anyone who wants an immediate return to regular activity, such as the dancer we recently treated who needed to get right back on her feet.” Patient Lisa F. says, “I went to Dr. Torpy after experiencing issues with varicose veins during my pregnancy. Dr. Torpy and his staff made me feel completely at ease and clearly explained everything I should expect. Even after my successful surgery, they continued to follow up and were just overall very thorough. I have not had any issues with my legs postsurgery, and I noticed results right away.” Patients with fine red spider veins or rosacea can now be effectively treated with an ultra fine needle that accurately delivers microwave energy while protecting surrounding tissue. Unlike varicose veins, spider vein treatments are cosmetic and are not covered by insurance. Dr. Torpy is glad to note that more people are seeking treatment for varicose veins. Each March, Totally Vein offers free screening to help create awareness and give people the opportunity to be evaluated. The problem with untreated veins is that they just get worse over time. Because the onset is slow, people adapt to the gradual worsening and forget how a normal leg feels. “Our real strength is that veins are all we do,” says Dr. Torpy. “At Totally Vein, we treat veins every single day. One of the greatest rewards is the positive feedback from patients when they return for follow-up. It’s great to see people so pleased with the outcome and experiencing such an improved quality of life. Patients who undergo treatment are amazed at how much better they feel. Often, the first followup question they ask is: ‘When can we do the other leg?’” To find out more about Totally Vein, visit totallyveinomaha.com or call 402-934-6996. Totally Vein is located at 17001 Lakeside Hills Plaza, Suite 102, in Omaha. WE

March 21–April 19
Happy birthday, Aries! Peacefulness will not dominate this month for the sign of Aries—quite the opposite! Expect a month full of ruckus. Your love life will feel chaotic, and you may experience change in your professional life. However, it may be the ideal time for starting new endeavors and achieving desired objectives. Despite the Mercury retrograde, good fortune is headed your way! Taurus (Apr 20–May 20) Your professional life will require more attention than your social engagements. The solar eclipse may cause some turbulence, but your month will conclude happily! Gemini (May 21–June 20) Money matters may seem quite daunting this month, but the difficulties are nothing that cannot be overcome. House of career will likely dominate the month. Cancer (Jun 21–July 22) Mercury retrograde is at it again, causing some stress in your social life. Work toward resolving differences, and the harmony in your relationships will be restored. Leo (July 23–Aug 22) House of career will be excellent this month, and you will find great pleasure in your environment. The social charm of the Leo works and plays well with others. Collaboration will be to your advantage. Virgo (Aug 23–Sep 22) Life will feel frenzied during the first part of April. Toward the end of the month, things will calm down and you will regain your sanity. Libra (Sep 23–Oct 22) All professional and personal issues will be brought to the forefront this month. Love will be more natural
and physical. Singles will fall in love swiftly. Your search for the right partner may come to a happy conclusion. Scorpio (Oct 23–Nov 21) House of family is strong and will dominate this month. Mentally review your professional goals and be ready to put the appropriate steps into action as April winds down. Sagittarius (Nov 22–Dec 21) Strengthen your psychological stability; all things in life depend on inner health. If you are emotionally strong, all aspects of your life will fall into order. Capricorn (Dec 22–Jan 19) Your professional life will be full of action. Use this as initiative to achieve your goals. Your ideas will be recognized and rewarded! Aquarius (Jan 20–Feb 18) Diligence will help you reach your goals this month. It is important to exercise self-will and independence, but you will need compromise to achieve success. Pisces (Feb 19–Mar 20) Life should calm down and be more peaceful for Pisces this month. Balance your chakras with some leisure traveling inside the country. Relax and give yourself some space to roam! WE

A Woman’s Work
Spring Cleaning Getting Rid of Yesterday By Sharon Knierim
Most of us roll up our sleeves in the spring and start that dreaded chore of deep housecleaning. We know it’s coming, and yet it often seems to take us by surprise. Closets are usually overflowing by now. Objects sometimes fall out of an open cupboard door. Where did all this “stuff” come from? Admit it, ladies. You were probably the one who brought it into the house or office, so it is your responsibility to get it out. Because this is an odd-numbered year, at this house, we really clean with a vengeance. I’m not just talking about finally getting rid of that one red stocking we’ve hung onto for years, waiting for its mate to show up. Although it is indeed adios to that red stocking, this is the year to pull EVERYTHING out of every closet, drawer, cabinet, and cubby hole. Yes, even the cubby hole. As with any large chore, it helps to have a plan and some type of guidelines. I always begin with everyone else’s possessions. These items seem the easiest for me to dispose of. Any garment torn beyond repair goes to the rag box or the garbage bin. Board games with lost playing pieces or cards are
16

often relegated to the garbage bin, too. Financial documents from a dozen years ago need to be shredded, leaving only the most sensitive and important papers intact. It is difficult to get rid of all those empty shoe boxes under the beds, but they have really already served their purpose. Pictures of nothing special are usually the next victims. At one time, we must have thought these art prints were very special, but nowadays we treat them with very little regard. We do feel a little twinge of ambivalence about tossing out what once adorned the walls of our home, but tastes do change over time. Have you ever gotten rid of a complete set of dinnerware? Be honest now. How many sets do you own? I’m sure we’re down to three sets, none of which matches the others. Over the
www.womensedition.com
years, we have been able to dispose of one set of dishes—the Melmac we started out with. Spring cleaning is no time to become sentimental! Oddly enough, we are still using cloth napkins because we like them. They do take up a little space, and they need constant washing, starching, and ironing, but using them is one habit that seems unbreakable. For years, I harbored a beautiful pair of green Brazilian leather pumps. These were from my heyday as an administrator, and I was particularly proud of them. After I broke one of my feet, I was never able to wear pumps again, but I still loved seeing them in my closet, where they enjoyed pride of place in the front of the shoe rack. You may have guessed where this is heading. Practicality finally won out over pride, and those shoes are now a distant memory. For some reason, of all the items I’ve disposed of over the years, those green Brazilian leather pumps are what I miss the most. Spring cleaning began here just a few weeks before some remodeling projects. To date, we have been to the recycling center and the thrift store three times each, and we’re packing up another trunk load of items we neither need nor use anymore. What is it about us that leads us to collect and keep so many things? I hope it’s not an unhealthy habit. Most of us do not have dark pasts of being denied what we needed as children. Maybe it’s just fun to procure this and that…until “this” literally pushes “that” out of our house and home. Are we hoarders? That seems unkind. I prefer to think of us as gatherers. In any event, all this gathering and saving of objects does give us the opportunity to perform the rites of spring cleaning, which has to be a good thing. A friend of mine tells me that she thinks she is a hoarder but has things under control. Rather than cluttering her life with “stuff,” she owns and operates a thrift store. This arrangement allows her to have “stuff” for a while and then sell it to other people. People donate, she sells, and then she pays out a share to the donor. What a great idea! “When does she spring-clean her shop?” I ask. Her answer is: “Never. I just sell everything along.” Well, that takes care of that. Spring cleaning will end soon enough, and the scrub buckets, mops, and vacuum cleaners will be put away. Next step—start filling those closets again! Happy spring cleaning! WE

Esther’s: Women’s Designer Consignment High Fashion at Great Prices By Jackie Byers
Shopping should be an enjoyable experience, in wellappointed, attractive surroundings. Merchandise should be displayed tastefully. Inventory should be high in quality but at a great price. If you agree, you need to visit Esther’s. This delightful treasure is located at 805 1/2 South 75th Street. Once you’re inside, you’ll see that everything is planned with the customers’ convenience and comfort as the top priorities. First of all, owner Trish Lonergan and her capable staff welcome you but don’t hassle you. “If you wish to browse, do so without interruption,” Trish encourages. “If you want assistance, the staff will assist competently and courteously. They have well-trained eyes and unimpeachable fashion sense. No matter what your shopping goals, the staff knows how to help you achieve them. Coats, dresses, suits, blouses, slacks, leisure and workout attire—Esther’s has a great selection.” Trish is proud to have a family business with more than 40 years of history in Omaha. “My mother started the business in her home,” Trish explains. “She sold her friends high-end clothing that her sister sent from New York City.” The business was thriving, and it eventually outgrew its Dundee location. Since the 1980s, it has been at its current location, now surrounded by wonderful neighbors. Kathleen Connor, another Omaha native, has established Among Other Things, a home design consignment boutique with furniture and accessories. A great partner for Esther’s, it is located just behind the curtain. You don’t even have to go out into the weather, but each shop does have a separate exterior entrance. They partner many of their promotions and recently included Scratch Bakery, which, according to Trish, has delicious donuts. Esther’s and Among Other Things have similar consignment policies. The consignor receives a contract describing the item and the time limit for display. Items are shown for three months. If your items don’t sell in that time, you may pick them up or have the staff donate them, as you choose. Potential consignors may bring in items between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, or by appointment (you may call 402-391-1301). If you drop in with your consignment, try to bring seasonal items, as merchandise is displayed seasonally. Be sure to take a look around when you bring your items to consign; you may find just the thing you’ve been looking for. “We carry the clothing brand names a customer would instantly recognize,” Trish notes. “Currently, we

have Prada, Hermes, Burberry, Chanel, Marc Jacobs, and Brunello Cucinelli, among others. We also offer leisure and workout attire, including lululemon. Really, no matter what activity you are engaged in, you want to look your best. And we have sizes from 2 to 18.” The merchandise is displayed artistically, so it’s easy to see how great you could look. Matching shoes, a coordinating scarf, and the ideal necklace are arranged with a dress, like a well-painted canvas. If you are attending an event that makes you want to sparkle, check out Esther’s. Actually, Esther’s can provide you with an item perfect for whatever look you want, from formals to cowboy boots. Great value is a big deal at Esther’s. “We research items we accept to be sure that the price is a great deal,” says Trish. They even plan sales to match the calendar. “The shop concluded a sporty Super Bowl– themed sale in February. With spring and Easter arriving, customers can expect appropriately themed bargains.” “Esther’s has customers and consignors from around the nation,” Trish shares. “They are as loyal to us as our Omaha clientele. They know what great deals we offer and that what we sell is great fashion everywhere.” As one longtime customer notes, “Shopping at Esther’s is a family tradition. When my mother was alive, I brought her here twice a month. My sisters from Seattle and Florida love to add to their wardrobes at Esther’s when they come for a visit.” Satisfied clients often call Esther’s the “best-kept secret in town,” but you don’t have to take their word for it! Plan to visit this great Omaha institution soon. Take in something for consignment and shop with pleasure in comfort—the way shopping was meant to be. You can visit Esther’s online on Facebook, Instagram, or at www.esthersconsignment.com. The shop is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. WE

Here Comes the Nontraditional Wedding Is It “The One” for You? By Karen Collins
When it comes to nontraditional weddings, the dazzle is in the details. By combining creativity with individual style, it is possible to put together a unique wedding that reflects the personalities of the wedding couple. In the past, a nontraditional wedding meant a trip to City Hall or the courthouse, with an official conducting a private service and two witnesses in attendance. Adventurous couples tied the knot in a neon-lighted wedding chapel in Las Vegas. However, today’s nontraditional weddings are far more individualized and fun. One of the most unique weddings I have attended took place at a remote campsite on a late summer afternoon. Guests were seated on folding chairs down in a lush valley surrounded by trees. The bride made her entrance on a beautiful white horse. It was stunning. Ahhs soon turned to oohs, however, when mosquitoes roughly the size of hummingbirds moved in and decided we must be the repas du jour. Nontraditional weddings provide the ultimate freedom in choices, but that does not mean that specific snafus like insects at outdoor weddings or a multitude of other unforeseen challenges won’t occur. An experienced wedding planner would have anticipated this turn of events and known exactly what to do to avoid it. At a minimum, a skilled wedding planner will coordinate details of the wedding ceremony and reception, be familiar with the types of vendors you need, manage the wedding budget, and help you understand vendor contracts you may be asked to sign. Ask friends and relatives if they are comfortable recommending vendors or a planner with whom they’ve worked. When considering a specific wedding planner, it is helpful to ask questions to determine if you will work well together. First, ask what types of weddings she has put together to see if your nontraditional wedding would benefit from her experience. Ask how many weddings she does per year and how many nontraditional weddings she has planned to date. Does she have a specialty? What is her favorite type of wedding? A list of all the services she provides is a must. Request references from couples she has worked with, and ask to see a portfolio showing past weddings she has planned. Does she have a back-up plan if an illness or emergency prevents her from being available on the day of the wedding? This last one may seem like a strange question, but it could prove to be important. If you’re planning a destination wedding, an added bonus of hiring a wedding planner is that she may be familiar with a travel agent who is experienced in putting together travel arrangements of this magnitude. You don’t really want your husband’s best friend from college to get stuck rooming with your crazy Uncle (fill in the blank— most of us have one) because of an oversight in hotel booking. There are so many details like this to consider that many couples prefer to hire the experts to handle them.
20
April 2017
That is not to say that you can’t be involved in your own wedding plans. In fact, professional planners want as much input from the wedding couple as possible. While the services they offer may be numerous, such as planning pre-wedding dinners and parties, managing the RSVP list, and coordinating the honeymoon plans, a nontraditional wedding may be a good time to highlight the artistic talents of your family or friends. Hand lettering on signage or place markers, as well as handcrafted decorations, can add a personal touch and provide one-of-a-kind accessories for your wedding. If not, most wedding planners have connections with vendors and will provide recommendations to assist you. A professional planner will respect your budget and time restrictions. Some details in particular are definitely best left to the experts. Most of us would find baking our own wedding cake a daunting task. Could you actually grow enough flowers for the bouquet and other arrangements? This is where outside help becomes invaluable. Florists, caterers, bakers, as well as providers of transportation services, and tent and canopy rentals may be added to the list of necessary vendors. You are free to use the services you want. If you are familiar with a favorite business, such as a bakery or florist, you should not be required to use one recommended by your wedding planner instead. Ultimately, it comes down to your vision of the wedding itself. Nontraditional weddings run the gamut of themes and may take place at a beach, on a mountaintop, in a barn, at a park or garden, in a historic building, or even at a museum. The interests of the couple will determine everything from the location to the style of attire to the types of food to be served. Outdoor weddings with a vintage theme have been popular in recent years, as have casual weddings held in historic event barns, complete with drinks served in Mason jars. Other details
www.womensedition.com
like lighting, table coverings, dishes, and flowers can pull humble elements together to create casual elegance. It can seem like anything goes when you peruse wedding sites online. Some of it can be over the top. There seem to be no rules at all! That leaves it to the wedding couple to use their judgment to make the final decision as to what works for them, their families, and their friends. Weddings used to be solemn affairs and some still are. Just because your wedding breaks from some traditions doesn’t mean it has to break from all them. One constant thread that runs through nontraditional weddings is color. Traditional weddings have usually focused on black and white, with a sprinkling of pastels. Today’s nontraditional weddings do not shy away from color in attire, flowers, decorations, or engagement and wedding rings. Reasons for choosing a specific engagement or wedding ring are a bit like those used in choosing a spouse—you love it and want to live with it forever. The fact that there are more choices than ever for combinations of metals and gemstones ensures that there is something for everyone. Stacking rings including three rings in various types of gold (rose, yellow, and white, for example) with one ring featuring the engagement diamond are a fresh take on bridal jewelry. Sapphires, rubies, and emeralds are finding their way into engagement and wedding rings, as are diamonds in many colors. Some couples ditch the engagement ring altogether and settle on a simple band with a solid row of their favorite colored diamond set around the entire band. Even vintage-inspired rings can be set with colorful gemstones, rendering them uniquely beautiful and modern. There are some unusual but beautiful color combinations, such as aquamarines and emeralds in white gold. Custom jewelers can take your initial ideas, make suggestions, and create one-of-a-kind wedding jewelry.
Wedding attire also is available in an array of styles and colors. While many wedding couples still prefer to purchase their clothing for their special day, the option of renting outfits for an entire wedding party has become more common. Of course, the location and style of the wedding will determine whether the clothing is formal or casual. The men in one wedding I attended were outfitted in chinos, light blue oxford shirts, and navy blazers—practical items that will be used again. What made it work for this wedding was the addition of matching bow ties and suspenders, which helped set the vintage theme of the outdoor, country wedding. The bride wore a vintage-style gown. Instead of a veil, she opted for a crown of wildflowers. Picnic tables with antique teacups and dishes and baskets of wildflowers carried the country theme further. For those who prefer an edgier look, wedding gowns are now available as two-piece ensembles consisting of a top and long or tea-length skirt. Other wedding gowns aren’t gowns at all, but have morphed into jumpsuits and pantsuits. Representatives of companies that sell or rent wedding attire can provide suggestions for successfully incorporating these looks into a contemporary nontraditional wedding. With all the choices available to put together a beautiful nontraditional wedding, it is little wonder that couples choose to utilize the services of wedding planners and the multitude of vendors who offer specialized services. The key to making your special day a one-of-a-kind celebration is combining your unique vision of the wedding with those who can transform it into reality. Downsizing? Moving? Remodeling? Consign With Posh Peacock
By Marge Shoemaker
Over the years, Pauline Uhing has worn many hats, all of which led her to opening Posh Peacock Consignment Gallery. “I’ve been an interior designer, a realtor, and a residential home builder,” she says. All of those careers involved decorating homes...many times, with furniture and accessories she had gathered on her own. After a downturn in the housing market six years ago, she had six model homes full of furnishings that needed to be sold. Pauline, who seems to be a very savvy lady, says the next natural step in the business world was to open a furniture and home decor consignment business. Hence, she opened Posh Peacock as a consignment gallery. “Besides the items I’d collected on my own,” Pauline relates, “I had contacts with other realtors who stage homes and with interior designers. Those contacts have been a boon to our business.” Pauline remarks that Posh Peacock has been a great source for realtors to find quality furnishings for staging. Interior designers typically recommend Posh Peacock to their clients who want to recoup some of the value of the current furnishings they

Devenu Medical Rejuvenation Center Spring is the Perfect Time for You to Blossom
By Deanna Beal
Every spring, when I was a child, my mother would announce it was time for spring cleaning. We would go about organizing closets, washing windows, tossing out the old and bringing in the new. After that, the house looked brighter, new and refreshed. As spring arrives this year, don’t focus just on the house—head to Devenu Medical Rejuvenation Center to get that feeling of renewal for yourself! Devenu celebrated its 10-year anniversary in November. Diane Fulcher and her husband, Jon, became the owners in May of 2010. Diane describes Devenu as a medical spa that provides non-invasive aesthetic procedures. At Devenu, they help clients “become” themselves. “It’s bringing people out of their shell,” she says, “and helping them see themselves from a new, refreshing perspective.” Devenu is known as one of the top practices in the region for CoolSculpting. As explained on the manufacturer’s website, this “fat-freezing procedure is the
only FDA-cleared, non-surgical fatreduction treatment that uses controlled cooling to eliminate stubborn fat that resists all efforts through diet and exercise.” CoolSculpting is used to address fat deposits in many areas of the body, including abdomen, flanks, inner and outer thighs, and bra fat. Another innovative treatment that Devenu offers is a light therapy called Forever Young BBL, also known as IPL. This treatment is used to address a wide range of problems, including age spots, freckles, redness, unwanted hair, and active acne. They also help their

clients feel like themselves again with bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). These hormones are different from synthetic replacement hormones because they are derived from plants. In addition to the innovative treatments they provide, Diane feels that the cohesion and personal dynamic of their staff is what sets Devenu apart from the competition. Diane and Dr. Julie Waddell, the medical director at Devenu, had an immediate bond that Diane describes as “instant trust.” As Diane and Dr. Waddell started to get to know each other, they realized they had attended the same university (the University of Iowa) and were in the same sorority (Alpha Delta Phi) at the same time. “Dr. Waddell always has the best interest for the business at heart,” Diane says. “Her patients love her! She’s amazing.” Dr. Waddell is the only person at Devenu who does the medical procedures. She sees patients through from beginning to end, every time. “She takes her time with you,” Diane says. “Nobody ever feels like they’re rushed.” Aesthetician Kelly Guderjan shares that Dr. Waddell is “very informative, but in a personable way. There are no dumb questions here.” Kelly describes Diane’s management style as “laid-back,” which gives the staff the space to do what they do best. The staff members at Devenu get to know their clients personally, learning everything from their schedules for personalized appointment times to their lifestyles. “When we truly know our clients, we can customize their treatments to better serve their personal and individual needs,” Kelly points out.
As client Katie B. is walking out the door, she shares, “I know Diane; I love the staff. They’re very friendly.” Diane feels the success of Devenu comes from how well the staff works together like a “well-oiled machine.” It’s not just in the daily workings of the business but also with the same purpose and value for care toward their clients. “We want our clients to feel respected, as if they’re visiting friends.” Diane attributes her entrepreneurial spirit to her father, who was a good husband, good father, and good businessman—in banking for 40 years. He loved building business-to-client relationships and was very good at it, Diane says. “Building my own successful business is my dream. That’s my passion.” If you’ve been wondering about nonsurgical ways to improve your chin profile, April is the month to try Kybella at Devenu. Kybella is an injectable skin treatment that kills fat cells under the chin. Beginning April 1st and going until supplies run out, Devenu is offering 44 units of Botox (a $528 value) for free with the purchase of 4 mL of Kybella. It’s the perfect time to give them a call and discover how they can help put the spring back in your step! Devenu Medical Rejuvenation Center is located at 9802 Nicholas Street, Suite 305, in Omaha. You can reach them by calling 402-397-2300 or by sending a message to info@devenu.com. For more information on their products and services, visit devenu.com. Follow them on Facebook (at Devenu Medical Rejuvenation Center) for upcoming specials. This spring, refresh yourself! WE

Hair Makes A Great Accessory! Hair Color Trends By Monica L. Davis
Celebrity hairstylist Serge Normant once said, “You have to have fun with hair. It’s a great accessory— play with it!” I couldn’t agree more. Your hair is a key component to your look. Trends for hair color change as rapidly as runway styles, and I love to experiment with my hair. If you like your current hair color but want to add some dimension, consider highlights. Highlights are a great way to experiment with creative, fun colors without sacrificing your overall color. One popular highlight style to hit the runway this season is the ribbon highlight. This technique provides caramels, blonds, or bursts of pastel highlights that spiral down the hair. It can be as bold or as subtle as you want, and it looks especially cool on naturally wavy hair. If you are looking to tone down your current locks without changing your natural hair color, you might ask your stylist for lowlights. Lowlights are the dark opposite of highlights. This technique adds dimension to your hair by blending in darker strands of hair color. Lowlights are also a great way to recreate a sun-kissed look! The newest hair color trend to appear on the red carpet is balayage, which means “sweep” in French. With this technique, color is applied only to the surface of the hair strands instead of saturating them. This gives the highlights a soft and natural look. Your colorist can choose tones that highlight the natural
glow of your skin. Balayage works well on both light and dark hair, and it can be used on hair of almost any length. The best thing about balayage is that it requires very little maintenance. As your hair grows out, you don’t see an obvious new growth line, which allows you to go longer in between colorist appointments. One of the biggest dilemmas in hair color is whether to go permanent or semi-permanent. Semi-permanent hair color is perfect for first-time hair color clients or anyone not looking for a permanent change. Semi-permanent hair color is also great if you are just starting to notice gray hairs or your hair color is just a little lackluster. Semi-permanent hair color doesn’t contain the damaging chemicals that some permanent hair dyes have. The color is simply applied as a “wash” or a “stain” to the surface of your hair. The treatment causes little to no damage, and color usually ›››

washes out within a couple of weeks. The process of permanent hair color is typically done in two steps. First, a chemical opens the hair follicles. Second, the color is deeply embedded into your hair. Permanent hair color alters your hair structure to make the color change. If you are battling with significantly gray hair, permanent hair color provides optimum results for covering those up! Depending on the condition of your hair, permanent hair color will last up to eight weeks. Although there are chemicals in permanent hair color, technology and science have made great strides in improving permanent hair color…by including ingredients that actually help repair and reverse the damaging effects of permanent hair color! There are now several products on the market that use no harmful chemicals. Instead, the hair color contains ingredients such as henna and other plant extracts and botanicals. If you want your hair to have a really shiny finish, you can ask your stylist to apply a glaze to your locks. Glazing is a simple treatment that can be used on colortreated, highlighted, or naturally colored hair. It gives hair a flawless shine. Glazing can also help if a processed color develops too warm or cold; the glaze can temporarily tame the tones until the hair color starts to break down. If your current hair color has you feeling disinterested or disappointed but you don’t want to commit to a semi-permanent or permanent hair color, you might try colored hair extensions. These products can transform your hair without any long-term commitment. Hair extensions come in a variety of colors and styles, including ombre (graduated color) or balayage, which will give you the most natural look! Keep in mind that different hair colors can complement or contrast with your natural skin tone. Just as wearing different colors of clothing can make your skin look brilliant or dull, a change in your hair color can drastically alter your looks. Do some research and experiment with some color tone tests to discover what your current skin tone is and which colors will best complement it. Have fun with it! Once you find a color that complements you and your skin tone, you will feel uplifted and can show off the new, smoldering you! Letting Everything Flow Dream It and Do It
By Janet Van deWalle
“What power this is I cannot say. All that I know is that it exists.” —Alexander Graham Bell
“Law of Attraction says, ‘That which is like unto itself is drawn.’”—Abraham-Hicks
Have you ever had the feeling of everything “flowing?” You’ve been there. Your energy is high. You move along at a pace where your accomplishments are almost mind-boggling. You match up to opportunities effortlessly. Whether it’s in your work or home life, things just seem to click. Have you ever wondered what makes that happen?
“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” —Martin Luther King, Jr.
The Law of Attraction is a wonderful thing to get. All of a sudden, we realize that we are not at the mercy of fate. When we get the Law of Attraction, we can look back on our past experiences and realize that—yes—we did create our own experience of reality. Now, I am the first to admit that this can be a very intimidating discovery—especially in the beginning. We may find ourselves trying to silence our thoughts and take back words we have spoken in order to not create a reality that we do not want. We do not live in a world of instant manifestation. We have time to speak new words, think new thoughts, and gently mold the reality that we are creating. If you have never experimented with the Law of Attraction, try a test tonight. Think of something that you have absolutely no resistance to. Take a minute or two before you think about whatever you’ve decided to manifest. It doesn’t take long—a few minutes at most. Get happy while you are doing this; have fun with it. And then, over the next few days, watch how the universe delivers this to you.
We live in a vibrational universe that is orchestrated by a law that is as predictable as the Law of Gravity. It is called the Law of Attraction.
“Within the seed of your desire is everything necessary for it to blossom to fulfillment, and Law of Attraction is the engine that does the work.” —Abraham-Hicks
“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” —Gandhi Getting into the flow happens when we get out of our own way. It happens when we stop looking at reality and focus on what we want. It happens when we stop talking about what is, and begin talking about what we want.

Make Tax Time a Learning Experience Helping Kids Make Sense of Money In the past few months, the topic of money sense has come up in conversations with several different people. Friend A relied on her ex-husband’s retirement pension and the inheritance from her father. Her philosophy was “spend, don’t save.” Now, her ex has died and she has no income. Friend B is living nicely on half the income from before the divorce. Friend C lived his life from paycheck to paycheck. Now he’s retired, has no savings, and must seriously watch his spending. Friend D has always been frugal but still manages to set aside savings every month. How did they develop such different attitudes about handling money? A and C say they were never taught about money. B and D say they are following their parents’ example. Preparing your tax return is a good time to help your kids get a sense of “where the money goes.” Many people pay for everything by using a credit card. Using plastic, however, doesn’t impart a sense of spending money because no cash is involved. When kids aren’t held accountable for their spending, they can go out of control. I gave my grandson money to spend on incidentals (snacks, souvenirs, etc.) on a road trip. I paid for mandatory expenses. We both kept our receipts and added them up at the end of each day. He was amazed at the totals. Knowing where the money goes by keeping records can be one of the hardest parts of doing taxes. Let the kids help.

First, explain to them why you need all this information. Show them the different types of spending records. Remind them they’ll have to do taxes someday, too. Give them some of the records to sort. If you show them how to do it, they can help. Even the little ones can sort by credit card or company logo. Once the sorting is complete, the kids can record the amounts under proper headings. Using columnar paper with headings might make it easier. This could even be a family project. Credit card bills can be used to recall trips or special outings...memories are always fun. When the older kids help the younger ones, everyone can be involved. Finally, let the kids take turns or work as teams using a calculator (or several calculators) to add the categories. I wouldn’t expect the kids to work more than half an hour or so. It might be wise to plan on spending more than one evening on this project. Remember my usual admonition that “kids are people, too.” If you get tired, they will be, too. Finally, share a reward (like a bowl of ice cream or other treat) and chat about what they learned. Don’t be surprised if they say, “Doing taxes is hard work.” You already know that! Now, you’ve made it a learning experience. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

The Art of Window Dressing Blending Fashion and Functionality
By Robyn V. Powell
The elements of a well-dressed window are a lot like the elements of a great wardrobe. Quality and fit are the essential building blocks, but color, pattern, and texture add flair and originality. Whether your style is traditional, contemporary, or somewhere in between, there’s a window treatment tailored to suit your home. With this year’s exciting trends drawing on the homeowner’s desire for treatments that are both functional and at the leading edge of fashion, there’s never been a more exciting time to dress your windows. Home decor in 2017 will see lots of bold new color. Deep jewel tones such as emerald, turquoise, sapphire, and topaz will provide a contrast to the cool grays that have dominated in recent years. People are looking to bright color as a refreshing change and welcoming it as a way to make their space feel more individualized. One of the easiest ways to incorporate new tones into your existing decor is through window treatments. Framing windows in vibrant color instantly injects energy and new life into any room. With the economy recovering from a long slump, there is a sense of optimism in the air. People are feeling indulgent. Luxe fabrics such as velvet, satin, and linen are making their way into window treatments everywhere, with opulent details like tassels, stylish rods, and finials adding a touch of glamour. Nothing says elegance like floor-to-ceiling panels in a neutral tone. For a less formal look, consider allowing long panels to spill onto the
floor, giving your room a more relaxed vibe. Take your window treatments to new heights by hanging them high—panels look best when they’re hung at least three to six inches above the window frame. At that height, rooms look larger, ceilings soar, and rods won’t interrupt the view. Simple, sleek lines are still dominating window fashions. Creating sleek silhouettes against a window lends a clean, modern look to any room. Give windows and sliding doors a streamlined look with panel-track systems, the updated version of vertical blinds. Unlike their unattractive predecessors, updated panel track systems are made of fabric or woven wood panels. Bring the outdoors in with natural woven shades in organic materials like bamboo. Popular for its eco-friendly qualities, bamboo lets in diffuse natural light yet affords some privacy. Pair woven shades with curtains or let them stand alone for a minimalist look. As home technology continues to evolve, high-tech motorized shades take the functionality of window treatments to the next level. Shades can be programmed to operate at a ›››

certain time from a remote location. What could be more convenient or luxurious than motorized shades that allow you to open or close them with the press of a button on a wall panel or a tap on your smartphone? Many types of window treatments can be automated, so you don’t have to choose between convenience and style. Automated shades can be operated by battery-powered handheld remotes or smartphone apps, or they can be fully integrated with a home’s automation system. Today’s advanced technologies allow for programmable operation based on everything from light intensity to temperature, but the level of sophistication is up to you. Benefits include convenience, energy savings, security during absences, and whisper-quiet operation. Window treatments can be custom tailored for specific rooms. Adding blackout lining to curtains or shades is ideal for a nursery or media room. UV-blocking lining protects furnishings, flooring, and artwork from sunlight. Look for blinds and shades with sheer fabric layers that can filter out harmful rays and still allow you to enjoy the view. Insulated cellular shades provide all the benefits of conventional shades but offer significantly better R-value (that is, thermal performance); they increase the insulating R-value by about 1–2. When fitted with side tracks, they increase R-value by about 4. Cellular shades are ideal for bedrooms, reducing nighttime heat loss in winter and reducing solar heat in summer. When choosing window treatments, consider the benefits of working with an experienced installation professional. Designer services are normally included with a custom solution, enabling you to see samples in your home and receive advice and recommendations based on your home’s unique requirements. Knowing how window treatments will look and function in your home before purchasing provides peace of mind. Check how long the company has been in business, ask to see samples of their work, and confirm that professional installation is included in the project price. Request references and a written estimate. Updating window treatments is an easy way to keep your home stylish while benefiting from the latest technological advances. Have fun, and dress your windows in a fashion that truly reflects you! Sources for this article included: wcaa.org, efficientwindowcoverings.org, and www.hgtv.com. WE

Heafey Hoffmann Dworak & Cutler Mortuaries A Reflection of Life and Changing Times By Kate Beiting
If you were living in Omaha in January 2016, you watched with shock as one of the keystones of local business went up in flames. The long-standing mortuary of Heafey Hoffmann Dworak & Cutler on West Center Road was in ashes, and the community mourned along with the staff. One of the most trusted businesses in Omaha had burned to the ground. Heafey is now in the process of rebuilding the mortuary at 7805 West Center Road, and they anticipate a September re-opening. In the meantime, the mortuary has made a temporary home in Bel Air Plaza, at 12100 West Center Road. The location has temporarily changed, but the longtime focus at family-owned and family-operated Heafey remains the same: taking care of grieving families. The professional and caring staff is committed to working with families during a time of grief and loss. The funeral directors at Heafey provide a wide range of services when offering assistance in a family’s time of need. They meet with the family to arrange services or memorials within the family’s budget, help create appropriate tributes, and help the family in executing the wishes of the deceased. If the deceased’s wishes are unknown, the funeral director helps the family identify what the deceased may have wanted and helps the family plan a service accordingly. Of course, it is always hard to lose a family member. One way to help ease your family’s burden at the time of your death is to make your own funeral arrangements in advance. A pre-need counselor at Heafey can meet with you to plan services in advance instead of leaving this work to your loved ones while they are grieving your loss. Planning your own funeral may sound a little morbid, but it’s actually a selfless act of love that your family will appreciate. The cost of the funeral and final expenses can be funded at the time of the writing of the funeral plan. This prepayment is done at today’s prices. Families appreciate the thinking and planning ahead, done with a clear mind—it relieves some of the inevitable stress of losing a loved one. If you have planned funeral services in the past, you may notice something else a little different about Heafey. Female funeral directors, once an anomaly in the mortuary business, are becoming more common. Heafey has three: Becca Brasher, Kealy Schilke, and Molly Hausmann. These women were kind enough to take a few minutes out of their busy day to discuss their profession, their experiences, and their passion for their work. “This industry has been mostly a man’s world,” says Molly, “but there are more and more women entering

the field all the time. My class was 60/40, women to men.” It makes sense, they note, that some people would rather work with a woman during a time of intense grief. Many women are nurturing by nature and are especially skilled at caregiving. “We all have our strengths,” they tell me. “Our goal is to be compassionate and assist in whatever way we can.” Molly, Becca, and Kealy come from different backgrounds but have much in common—they love what they do, they are eager to discuss what services they offer to families, and they each knew at a young age that they wanted to pursue mortuary science as a career. They all describe their love of science and their desire to help others—two big factors in this career. “I knew when I was very young that I wanted to be in a career involving science,” says Becca. Kealy was initially interested in forensic science, until she began talking to professionals in the mortuary business and found out what that field had to offer. When these women talk about their chosen career, they use similar words—passionate, committed, fortunate. They all feel fortunate to be working at Heafey, where they have learned from their colleagues. “We all enjoy working with the supportive staff here—they are great mentors and teachers,” says Becca. “We are lucky to be here.” For more than 125 years, the staff at Heafey Hoffmann Dworak & Cutler has been taking great pride in helping Omaha families with their funeral needs. Although much has changed in the last century or so— and even in the last year!—their passion for helping grieving families has not. Shedding Light on Mortgages How to Navigate Residential Loans
By Anne Yankus
Many of us have been there: You’re excited because you’ve found just the right house, and then you’re discouraged by the prospect of finding a mortgage. Even if you’ve had a home loan before, you should be aware that the mortgage market isn’t what it used to be. If you’re buying an existing home, you’ll need to understand a few basic types of mortgages. First of all, there are governmentinsured loans and conventional loans. Government-insured loans are, as the name implies, insured by the government. Those currently on the market include Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loans, loans through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and USDA or Rural Housing Service (RHS) loans. A conventional loan is any loan not insured or guaranteed by a government agency. It’s also important to understand the different types of rates available. Fixed-rate loans keep the same interest rate for the life of the loan. Adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMs) have rates that adjust over time (usually, once per year). If you’re building a new home, you’ll want to get a building (or construction) loan. Construction mortgages differ from regular home mortgages in that they pay for just the project of building your house; the principal is due when your house is completed. Alternatively, you can opt for a construction-topermanent loan, which starts out like a construction loan but

converts to a regular home loan upon project completion. As I mentioned earlier, mortgages aren’t the same as they were many years ago. One of the more recent changes is in the FHA mortgage guidelines. These rules have toughened up on how student loans, credit cards, and car/installment loans count toward your debt-to-income (DTI) ratio. They have also changed how much background information you need when claiming income from overtime, part-time work, and self-employment and gift funds. While these changes have certainly made getting an FHA loan more difficult for borrowers considered “on the margin,” qualifying is still possible. If you want to access the equity already in your home, two common options are home equity loans and mortgage refinancing. Home equity loans typically have lower interest rates than an initial mortgage, which make them a great opportunity to increase your cash on hand. There are a couple of downsides. First of all, you’ll be responsible for two mortgage payments each month. Secondly, you are using your house as collateral, so missing payments can put your house at risk. Because of these limitations, many homeowners ›››

choose to refinance their original loan instead of taking out a home equity loan. Refinancing essentially pays off your existing loan by replacing it with a new one. This is often done to lower the interest rate, change the loan type (that is, change fixed to adjustable), or shorten the length of the loan. While this may seem like an obvious solution to reducing debt, there are still some drawbacks. Refinancing is not free; it can cost 3–6 percent of your loan’s principal. Many experts say that if the reduction in your interest rate will be less than 1–2 percent, it’s generally not worth the cost of refinancing. Keep in mind how long you plan to stay in your current home and examine both the short-term and long-term advantages. Homeowners older than 62 years can consider a reverse mortgage to supplement their income. Reverse mortgages are similar to home equity loans. The differences are that you receive the loan in payments instead of a lump sum and that the mortgage doesn’t need to be repaid until you sell your house. The downside to this, of course, is that you’ll have to use part of the earnings from the eventual sale of your house to pay off the reverse mortgage. Researching mortgage options takes time and effort, but shopping around can save you thousands of dollars. There are many different places to look for mortgages: banks, mortgage companies, credit unions, and mortgage brokers. A mortgage broker can be a nice option if you feel overwhelmed by the research process; if she is contracted to act as your agent, she will find the best option for you. However you decide to do your mortgage research, there is some information you need to get from every potential lender. Ask about the interest rates and points (fees paid to the lender or broker). Understand the requirements for down payments and private mortgage insurance (PMI) and how those items can affect your available rates. Be sure to ask for a breakdown of any additional fees. Getting a mortgage isn’t rocket science. With the right information and a little effort, you can get the perfect loan for you and your family. Focus Early on Fertility Hope for Future Pregnancy
By Kylie Gumpert
Infertility is a disease with many possible underlying causes, but there is hope for achieving pregnancy. Infertility is treatable for the vast majority of couples, but starting early is key. Infertility is diagnosed when a woman under the age of 35 years has been unable to get pregnant after a year of unprotected sex, or just six months if she is over 35. According to the American Society of Reproductive Health, one third of infertility cases are rooted in male reproductive health, one third in female reproductive health, and one third in a combination of the two. However, causes vary widely and depend on each individual’s medical history, lifestyle, genetic qualities, and any underlying disease. The chance of having reproductive issues is increased in either sex by smoking or heavy drinking, medical conditions including diabetes, and exposure to radiation, such as chemotherapy treatment and medication. Excess weight can contribute to infertility, as well, so maintaining a healthy BMI is important and something to consider if you are struggling to get pregnant. To find the cause of infertility, men undergo a semen analysis that looks at the mobility, shape, and number of their sperm. Women may have multiple tests to determine if there is an issue with her reproductive organs or hormone levels. Thankfully, even though about one in eight couples in the United States struggles to conceive, between 85 and 90 percent

of these cases can be successfully treated through conventional medications (often those that treat hormone imbalances or induce ovulation) or surgery to repair reproductive organs. Methods like in vitro fertilization (IVF) are used less often. With IVF, a man’s sperm and a woman’s egg are put together and incubated in a dish, then later placed in the woman’s uterus. IVF is a method that falls under what is called an assisted reproductive technology (ART), which also includes intrauterine insemination (when sperm is placed in the uterus using a long tube), gamete intrafallopian transfer (when an egg and sperm are placed in the fallopian tube), and zygote intrafallopian transfer (when an in vitro-fertilized egg is placed in the fallopian tube). Obviously, these procedures are more complicated than medication or a simple surgery. For some couples, an ART may be the best option after more conservative methods fail. Intrauterine insemination may work best for women who have cervical scarring or for men who have low sperm mobility or low sperm count. While the use of these technologies has doubled in the past few years, still only about 200,000 couples use ART methods, according

to 2014 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Every year, about 1.6 percent of infants born alive in the United States were conceived through ART. Fertility preservation is an option that allows men and women to freeze their sperm or eggs if they are worried about fertility, and to determine the chance that their embryos have problematic genes that could cause disease or deformities in their child or increase the likelihood of a miscarriage. Fertility preservation is becoming more common in women who have been diagnosed with cancer and are about to go through treatment that could harm their fertility. Its popularity is also increasing with women who want to preserve their chance of having children later in life. Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis is a controversial technology through which IVF embryos can be analyzed for possible problematic genes. Those with problematic genes are usually destroyed. Embryos without problem genes can be placed in the woman’s uterus or frozen for a later attempt at pregnancy. This method may be tried if a woman has recurrent pregnancy loss or multiple failed fertility treatments, or if a parent has a genetic or chromosomal disorder. Parents may also try third-party ART, which is often referred to as surrogacy. In cases where a woman’s eggs can’t be fertilized, a surrogate can carry a baby using the man’s sperm through insemination. If a woman’s eggs are healthy but she is unable to carry a baby to term, a gestational carrier can carry the couple’s embryo instead. For women younger than 35 who try ART methods, the success rate is around 40 percent. However, for every two to three years after reaching age 35, the success rate falls by roughly 10 percent. Identifying fertility problems as early as possible is important so there’s time to consider fertility preservation or other treatments. If you are concerned about your fertility or want to learn more, ask your primary care physician to refer you to a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist or fertility specialist in your area. Infertility can feel like a very lonely place, but help is out there! Don’t give up hope on pregnancy before you speak with a fertility specialist. An Inside Look
I Can Hear You Now! Hearing Aids Open a Whole New World By Marge Shoemaker
Mom was in her 80s when she realized she was losing her hearing. The volume on the television had to be turned up. She often asked people to repeat themselves. She realized she sometimes spoke louder than she intended. She had so much trouble hearing other people that she wondered if everyone was mumbling or whispering. She decided she needed to have her hearing checked and made an appointment with Dr. Roger McGargill at Professional Audiology and Hearing Center. “On the first visit, we do a patient evaluation with an interview, followed by a hearing test,” Dr. McGargill explains. Knowing the possible cause of the patient’s hearing loss is as important as knowing what the patient expects in hearing improvement. Hearing aids can filter out some background noise, but they don’t do the job as well as a fully functioning human ear. The audiologist determines what kind of hearing loss the patient is experiencing in order to choose the appliance best suited to the patient’s needs. Most people have difficulty hearing higher tones, which don’t carry as well as lower tones. “At Professional Audiology, we fit the patient with an appropriate device,” says Dr. McGargill. “She gets a 60-day trial period before scheduling a final consultation. If it doesn’t work for her, there is no charge. Helping people is what counts.” Hearing aids have greatly improved over the years. Dr. McGargill reminds us that, at one time, hearing aids consisted of a sort of horn held to the patient’s ear. The patient’s hearing improved only if the speaker talked directly into the horn, which was cumbersome and directionally sensitive. Hearing aids have gradually become smaller, to the point that they are now nearly undetectable. Although research into recovering lost hearing is always underway, Dr. McGargill notes that lost hearing can never be fully recovered. His best advice is to protect your hearing when you’re engaged in a loud activity (mowing the lawn, for example). “Use earplugs or noise-muffling earphones—whatever it takes.” Even the implements to evaluate hearing have improved. When Mom had her hearing test, it was necessary for her to indicate which ear was detecting sound. Now, a “no response” test has been developed. This type of evaluation uses electrodes to detect what the patient hears, so the evaluator can identify what a patient can hear even if the patient is too young or impaired to respond. “It’s amazing,” Dr. McGargill enthuses. “That device can even be used on animals!” According to Dr. McGargill, the audiologist’s
48

biggest challenge is matching the hearing device to the patient. It is important to meet the patient’s needs and expectations realistically. One of his patients, he recalls, had a job that required him to record the proceedings during major company meetings correctly and unobtrusively...that meant no interruptions to ask speakers to repeat themselves. Together, Dr. McGargill and the patient tested several seat locations at a conference table. Because most of the remarks were directed to the chairman, they determined that a seat at the chairman’s end of the table was best for the patient. “It helps hearing to see the speaker,” Dr. McGargill remarks, “but, in this case, hearing the speaker took precedence.” The patient wore the hearing aid to several meetings conducted during his trial period, and the initial determination was correct. Dr. McGargill personally knows the importance of hearing. His son was born deaf. “I’d always been interested in people and gadgets and was majoring in speech pathology,” he recalls. “My son’s birth coincided with the first hearing test I ever gave. I switched my focus from speech to hearing.” Born and raised in Nebraska, Dr. McGargill has a Bachelor of Arts from Creighton, a Master of Science from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and a PhD from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Dr. McGargill finds that most people go through a period of about seven years of hearing deficiency before they get treated. He also notes that, while we often associate hearing loss with aging, hearing loss can happen at any age. Go to a qualified audiologist as soon as you notice that you’re having trouble hearing…or as soon as your friends or family point it out to you. Dr. McGargill loves it when someone comes in reluctantly, nudged by his spouse, and leaves saying, “I wish I’d done this years ago!” His final advice to anyone with a hearing aid: Wear it! Adjusting to hearing aids takes time and effort, but you’ll be glad to get back the life you’ve been missing. Dr. Roger McGargill and his staff at Professional Audiology and Hearing Center are located at 4509 Leavenworth Street, in Omaha. Call 402-558-0440 or toll free at 800-861-0440 for an appointment. Advice from the Oracle of Omaha Index Funds for Your 401(k)
By George Morgan
The first time I saw Warren Buffett in person was at a speech he gave on June 21, 1992. How can I be so specific? A friend of mine from Birmingham, Alabama, had just published a book on Mr. Buffett and wanted me to have the Oracle himself autograph several of them. He kindly signed and dated every one. At the time of that meeting, Mr. Buffett’s notoriety as a stock picker was just beginning to take off. He appeared to have the Midas touch—every stock he bought turned to gold. Over the years, however, his focus has changed. Today, the amount of time he devotes to the stock selection process has dwindled nearly to zero. During the Q&A session following his 1992 remarks, members of the audience kept asking him what stocks he was buying so that they could tag along on his coattails. His response was evasive. The only recommendation he was willing to give was to buy Berkshire Hathaway stock. Over the course of the next few years, during Q&A sessions at the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting, this line of questioning continued. As always, his response was: “Buy Berkshire.” Then, at one meeting, and I can’t pinpoint the date this time, he surprised everyone. Out of the blue, his advice was: “Buy an S&P 500 index fund.” I blew off this idea. I was a broker at the time, and I knew I wasn’t going to make a fortune selling index funds to my clients. This new response has become a
50

regular event at the Berkshire annual meeting. An index fund is a mutual fund that buys and holds the stock of a market index. It is passive; that is, no effort is made to buy and sell stock in order to enhance performance or, in financial jargon, “beat the market.” An index fund’s performance mirrors that of the market. Over the long run, index funds outperform actively managed funds, primarily because of their low cost structure. In 2008, Mr. Buffet took his advocacy of index funds to the next level when he initiated a million-dollar bet with hedge fund manager Protégé Partners that a simple index fund could outperform a group of hedge funds chosen by Protégé Partners. A hedge fund is a type of mutual fund that is only available to the wealthy. Their managers are assumed to be the crème de la crème of the professional money managers, and they are equipped with the latest in technology and financial research. The latest performance data on the bet indicate that the S&P 500 index fund is leading the hedge funds 67.5 percent to 27.1 percent, with less than a year to go. The million-dollar prize will
www.womensedition.com
go to a charity chosen by the winner. In his 2015 Annual Letter to Shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway, Mr. Buffett made the use of index funds a personal matter. In this letter, he wrote that, after he scuffles off to the big board room in the sky, he has directed the trustees of his estate to “put 10 percent of the cash in short-term government bonds and 90 percent in a very low cost S&P 500 index fund. I believe the trust’s long-term results from this policy will be superior to those investors who employ high-fee managers.” He further states that his heirs and trustees will be constantly approached by financial advisors who will urge them to take an actively managed money approach. Mr. Buffet declares emphatically that an actively managed approach will generate revenue for the advisors and will be “devoid of benefit to his heirs.” It is interesting to note that he doesn’t want his money to stay in Berkshire Hathaway. There are a number of reasons that Mr. Buffett has turned his preference away from active money managers and is recommending passive index funds. To begin with, he feels that investors receive little in return for the significant fees they pay to funds managers. Fees eat into a fund’s performance. When compounded out over decades of investing, this can amount to tens of thousands of dollars spent, with little to show for it. Mr. Buffet also knows that professional money managers consistently underperform the market in the long run. He feels that individual investors should ignore the sales pitches and promises of Wall Street and instead focus on the fees they are paying. The average actively managed fund will charge in excess of 1 percent, while a passively managed fund will charge 0.04 percent. Over the course of several decades, that is a lot of money. The bottom line is that the Oracle of Omaha thinks that you should consider the use of index funds in your 401(k). Are you ready to grab those coattails?

In-Home Care Options Experience Shows People Thrive At Home By Julie Kuntze
Longevity runs in my family—I was fortunate to know three great-grandmothers as well as my maternal and paternal grandparents. I spent time with all of them in their own homes and knew them as capable adults and active individuals. Time, of course, marches on. Eventually, each of my great-grandmothers moved into a nursing home. None of them wanted to be there, but options were limited at the time. Fortunately for you and me, the field of elder care has made some important advances in recent years, and seniors now have a much wider variety of options to choose from. The majority of seniors requiring some form of long-term care are now receiving it through home health care or elder care services. According to the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, by 2030, 20 percent of our population will be 65 years of age and older, and 70 percent of people turning 65 will use some form of long-term care during their lifetime. Many individuals fall into the difficult position of not being able to live completely on their own, yet not requiring (or wanting) the full services of a nursing home. “The trend towards communitybased services as opposed to nursing home placement was formalized with the Olmstead Decision (July, 1999)—a court case in which the Supreme Court upheld the right of individuals to receive care in the community as opposed to an institution whenever possible,” notes caregiver.org.

In fact, there are many benefits to keeping a person in her own home long-term. Most of us see nursing homes as the option of last resort: of adults aged 65 and older, 90 percent say they would like to stay in their home as long as possible. The good news, according to the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a.org), is that providing care in the home costs an average of four times less than receiving the same services at a nursing home or skilled care facility, saving both private and government dollars. Assisting or treating an individual in her own home also reduces the risk of further illness being spread between patients. In-home care can be broken down into two broad categories: personal care and home health services. Personal care is non-skilled care that helps with basic living functions, such as bathing, eating, and small household chores. Home health services are provided by licensed professionals (such as nurses or therapists) and include skilled care such as physical therapy, wound care, injections or intravenous therapy, and monitoring serious illness or unstable health. The amount of care provided depends on each individual’s
www.womensedition.com
needs and can range from a few hours a week to full-time or live-in care. Children may also benefit from in-home care. Skilled nursing services provided at home can help a medically fragile child avoid the risks inherent with hospitalization while keeping him in a familiar and comfortable environment. Premature babies, children who are ventilator-dependent, and kids who require feeding tubes are often good candidates for in-home care, and services are usually provided in cooperation with the child’s physician. When the time comes to set up care (for yourself or a loved one), there are some important things to consider. Whether hiring a well-known company or an experienced individual, be sure to check their credentials. Requirements are different in each state, so start by talking with your local or state agency on aging, which can be located by address or zip code on eldercare.gov. Ask companies if they are certified under any national accrediting organization. Individuals should be able to provide information regarding their own training and certification, which should also be confirmed by those entities. Safety and security should also be addressed when employing home care services. Many states require providers to carefully screen applicants and perform criminal background checks and drug screening on their employees. Ask for and check references. Inquire as to whether the company and their service providers are bonded and insured to protect clients from loss resulting from theft or an accident occurring in the home. In recent years, additional services from traditional business have emerged to make daily tasks easier for everyone. Older adults can take advantage of these opportunities! Grocery stores, for example, often offer delivery. Customers choose their items online, order from a small catalog, or call their order in. Many pharmacies offer similar services, often available for prescriptions, overthe-counter medicines, and even small sundries. Other public services, such as local libraries, may also provide delivery services for senior citizens. It will be many years before I qualify for elder care, but being aware of the current options may help in choosing care for a family member or friend in the meantime. The Green Thumb
The Beauty of Witch Hazel Something New in the Garden By Sharon Knierim
If you were hoping for a biography of the Warner Bros. cartoon character Witch Hazel, you will be disappointed in this month’s Green Thumb. However, if you’re looking for a new and interesting plant for your garden, you’ve come to the right place. Although the astringent made from its bark has soothing properties, this plant is no sorceress. The “witch” in the name actually comes from an old word that means “shrub with pliable branches.” No magic there. A few years ago, I added witch hazel to my landscape without really thinking much about it. The shrub was one of those spur-of-the-moment purchases that I made because I couldn’t think of anything else to get. I brought it home and planted it in the backyard, near where the apple orchard used to be. What a wonderful surprise I had in store! Lack of planning actually paid off this time. Without realizing witch hazel’s talents, we had planted a hardy shrub that has the distinct habit of blooming in late autumn, early winter, or at the very beginning of spring, when there is not much else to look at in the outdoor environment. Witch hazel blooms on the barest of twigs after last year’s crops have fallen away and before the new season’s leaves appear. Depending largely on the shrub’s age and the season’s severity, the site chosen for planting will ensure
success in shape, vigor, and bloom. When the Pilgrims arrived in New England in the 17th century, they were greeted by wild witch hazel. Pioneers and early settlers to this continent were intrigued by the beauty of this bush. These specimens had not yet been discovered by roving and conquering Europeans and had not yet been introduced into European gardens. Native Americans shared the medicinal value of witch hazel with the newly arrived Pilgrims, demonstrating how the bark and leaves could be infused to offer relief. Today, who doesn’t have a bottle of witch hazel in the bathroom cupboard? Two Asiatic witch hazels seem to garner the most attention among gardeners. One of them is Japanese (Hamamelis japonica)

and resembles a tree with yellow flowers (much like America’s native species). Expect blooms from January to March. The other popular witch hazel is Chinese (Hamamelis mollis). It is normally a medium-sized shrub but has been known to grow to tree size. Its golden flowers are red at the base. It is considered by many to be the most handsome witch hazel. Bloom time is from January to March. It’s not hard to find a good spot in a Midwestern landscape for a witch hazel shrub, but gardeners should still choose the site with care. Witch hazel is a very strong plant and is amazingly adept at survival, even though winter’s harsh winds and despairing temperatures make life tough for them. Any shrub that can bloom from January (sometimes December) through March is certainly worth investigating! Of course, you’ll want to give this shrub enough space to grow and prosper. Remember, a witch hazel shrub can grow up to 10 feet tall. Bear in mind that the shrub can also grow to be quite wide. As when digging a hole for any bush or shrub, plan to allow plenty of root space below the ground. They are best planted singularly rather than as part of a border. Of course, there are gardeners who cannot resist planting en masse. If that sounds like you, trying planting witch hazel as a hedge for the full effect of the beauty it offers to a landscape. Typically, witch hazel does not need a support system. Dependable sunshine and a regular schedule of watering (for at least the first two years) should keep the witch hazel in tip-top shape. Witch hazel seems to be relatively pest-free. Deer do not crave it. Mice typically are not interested, either. And even during the strongest wind gusts, witch hazel is able to withstand whatever Mother Nature throws her way. Although it can grow quite large, witch hazel is not an invasive plant. What you plant is what you get! The shape of witch hazel is very attractive and upright. Whether planted singularly or presented as a mass planting such as a hedge, witch hazel certainly earns a warm spot in the hearts of those gardeners who grow it. Editor’s Note: Sharon Knierim has been a Master Gardener since 2003 through Iowa State University. She lives on a small farm in Western Iowa and looks forward to sharing her passion for gardening each month with her green-thumbed reader friends. WE

What to Do When You Get Dinged Navigating Collision Repair By Julie Kuntze
Collision damage can strike a vehicle at any time, from a minor fender bender to a parking lot bump to a surprise hailstorm. No matter what happened, finding a dent in your vehicle can stop your daily routine in its tracks. Of course, if you’ve been in a major accident, you have bigger things to worry about than a dented exterior. But if the damage to your car isn’t critical to its safety or operation, you have time to slow down and make the best decisions about collision repair. One of the first courses of action you should take is to contact your insurance company regarding the repairs you need. Typically, they will make an appointment with you to inspect the damage to your vehicle and file a report. Next, you need to find a repair shop. Your insurance company will probably suggest that you visit a repair shop on their “approved” list, but you are not typically required to take their advice. Your insurance company may also ask that you get estimates from multiple shops. Keep in mind that they may then offer to pay only the lowest estimated cost, which might not be the highest quality of repair. You are ultimately responsible for the cost of the repairs to your vehicle, so the decision is yours. While you are responsible for the cost of the repairs to your car, the collision repair shop you choose is responsible
for the repair work performed. This is why it’s so important to choose a repair facility based upon reputation and quality of workmanship to restore your vehicle to its previous condition. Start by asking family or friends if they can recommend a good shop. At the shops you’re considering, ask if the technicians who will work on your vehicle are ASE-certified or I-CARcertified in collision repair. Once you’ve chosen a collision repair shop, have them provide a detailed, written damage report (this lists all the parts and labor required to repair your car). The repair shop should also be able to spend some time investigating the damaged areas in order to provide an accurate, written estimate of the repairs. Finally, the shop should provide you with a written warranty of its work. If you aren’t satisfied or the work doesn’t hold up, you need to know they’ll work to resolve the problem. Vehicles can end up with pesky dents and dings from stray shopping carts, forceful car doors, or hail. These are the times

when the only thing you need to have repaired is a simple impression or dimple, with no noticeable damage to the paint. For these cases, paint-less dent removal (PDR) has become a very popular option, since it often costs less and saves time. With this technique, technicians access the area behind the dent through a window or other opening and press the area back into place. In most cases, there is no evidence that the dent ever existed. Dents that are up to a few inches in diameter can often be fixed in just minutes. There is typically no sanding, body filler, or repainting required, which makes the repair cheaper and quicker. While dealers, rental companies, and auction houses have been using PDR for years, there are now many places that offer PDR services, including auto body shops, independent repair shops, and specialty mobile operations. As with any type of repair service, there is a wide range of experience levels, so you should get recommendations and check the shop’s references, as well. If your vehicle does require repainting, you might ask your repair shop if they use Waterborne paint. Waterborne

paint is eco-friendly paint for cars, in which the main ingredient is water instead of a hazardous solvent. Many repair shops around the country have switched to Waterborne paint. Waterborne and solvent technologies are basically the same. It is the agent that carries the pigment and binder from the spray gun to the surface that is different; therefore, the results are equivalent to the original factory finish, with a safer environment for everyone. We all hope to maintain the condition of our vehicles, and one of the best ways to avoid damage is to avoid collisions! That means keeping your vehicle in good shape, performing regular maintenance, and, of course, paying attention to the road while you’re driving. But accidents (and hailstorms!) still happen. If your vehicle sustains collision damage, take a little extra time to make sure you’re getting the right kind of repair from the right repair shop. Your vehicle can return to its previous condition and retain its value. You’ll be back on the road in no time. The Good Life
Orthodontics and Pedodontics Specialty Care for Your Smile
By Ashley Anderson
Your smile is one of the things most people first notice about you—it shows your personality and expresses your emotion. It’s just as important to keep your smile healthy as it is to keep your body healthy. In addition to visiting a dentist regularly and implementing an oral hygiene regimen of brushing and flossing at home, specialized care may be needed to make sure your smile is at its best. Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that makes corrections to teeth that are poorly aligned or improperly positioned. It may also be used to correct the fit of teeth so as not to stress the jaw or temporomandibular joint (TMJ). You may also be a candidate for the care of an orthodontist if you are looking to correct cosmetic imperfections in your smile, like teeth that are crooked but don’t negatively affect your alignment. For older children and adults who require or desire correction for teeth, the care of an orthodontist may be required. Most of us are familiar with traditional braces, which consist of metal brackets affixed to the front of teeth and connected by wires. The wires are tightened over time to move the teeth. The process generally takes months or even years. While this may still be the best choice for some patients, today’s orthodontists have other options for correcting misaligned teeth. One such option is Fastbraces. Like traditional braces, Fastbraces include metal brackets that are attached to the teeth. With Fastbraces, however, the root and the crown of the tooth are moved simultaneously. This cuts down on both discomfort and treatment time. And because Fastbraces straighten teeth faster than traditional braces do, they are generally the less expensive treatment. They can be used to address many orthodontic concerns, such as crowding, open bite, overbite, spacing, and crossbite, and they are appropriate for adults and children. For people whose orthodontic concerns are mild to moderate, Invisalign treatment might be the more aesthetically pleasing choice. With this treatment, your orthodontist takes precise scans of your teeth (she may also make physical impressions). This information is used to make custom trays, called aligners, for your teeth. Because the clear aligners are essentially invisible, it’s easy to wear them up to the recommended 22 hours a day (not while eating or brushing). As your teeth move toward the correct position, your orthodontist will make new aligners for you. The cost of Invisalign is generally similar to that of traditional braces. After orthodontic treatment, patients typically wear a retainer to maintain the new alignment. Your orthodontist will take an impression of your newly straightened teeth and then create a retainer out of wire or plastic (or both). Retainers can be fixed (cemented to the back of the teeth) or removable. Either type may be worn for years after braces are removed. Your

orthodontist can give you her recommendation for your specific case. Family dentists are trained to provide regular dental care for adults and children. In some cases, you and your children may be happy to see the same family dentist. In other cases, it may be preferable for children to visit a pedodontist, instead. Pedodontics is a branch of dentistry that cares specifically for children and their teeth. Much as a pediatrician cares for children’s medical needs, a pedodontist specializes in the dental care of children. In addition to dental training, a pedodontist’s training includes child psychology, enabling her to emotionally care for children during treatment. This can be especially helpful for children who are fearful of the dentist’s office. (Keep in mind that children do not naturally fear the dentist; they will probably follow your lead in that regard.) Parents should start an oral hygiene regimen for children as soon as the children’s teeth begin to appear (usually, between six and 24 months). This is also a good time to make your child’s first dental appointment. During a visit, the pedodontist will be able to provide x-rays, cleanings, and regular care for children’s teeth, as well as watch the child’s oral development to track progress and recommend orthodontic care, if needed. No matter what your age, dental care is vital to your health. In addition to keeping your smile healthy, your dentist can also recommend an orthodontist to correct dental problems, if needed, or a pedodontist to care for your children’s teeth. Although some people will end up needing orthodontic care no matter what, helping your children establish good dental habits when they are young will put them on the path toward a lifetime of healthy teeth. Panama Canal A Man, a Plan, a Canal—Panama! By Jackie Williams
It’s so famous that when conversations of travel to Panama come up, the first thing people ask is, “Have you been to the Panama Canal?” If you haven’t yet, you may wonder what the big deal is…or why go to Panama at all. The history of the massive construction project of the Panama Canal is fascinating! It affects global trade and travel to this day and will continue to do so in our future. You must go see the Panama Canal for yourself to see what the big fuss is all about! The Panama Canal is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World and is one of two strategic artificial waterways in the world (the other is the Suez Canal, in Egypt). It is a marvel of engineering…and was the most expensive engineering enterprise in history. Tens of thousands of people died during its construction, mostly because of mosquitoes that transmitted malaria and other tropical diseases. It was completed in 1914. It takes around nine hours to pass through the Panama Canal and its three locks, depending on “traffic.” Sailing through the 48-mile canal instead of around the southern tip of South America shaves almost 8,000 nautical miles off of a boat’s trip from New York to San Francisco. Before it was built, shipping lines

traveling from one side of the Americas to the other often sailed around Cape Horn, which was notoriously dangerous. You’re probably starting to see why this shortcut was such a big deal! Now that you’ve had a little refresher course on the history of the Panama Canal, it’s time to experience it for yourself. Watch in amazement as huge cargo ships and cruise liners pass along throughout the day. You can take a cruise that travels the length of it, hop on a boat for a short day cruise, watch the ships pass from the land, and even drive across it. Take your pick! My recommendations would be to cruise its entirety and also see it from the shore for some great photos. Start in Florida and end up in California! But make sure you stop and spend some time in Panama instead of just sailing through. There’s no denying that the Panama Canal is a big draw to Panama, but there is more to see in Panama than just the canal. In this exciting travel destination, you’ll find world-class sportfishing, diving, bird-watching, nature treks, and historic tours, to name just a few activities. rain forests for a variety of experiences. The weather is always hot this close to the Equator, so you can visit any time of year for the sunshine. If you just want to relax, you can always stay at a posh hotel or boutique property and hang out by the pool or beach after a massage. If you travel at the right time, you can catch the humpback whales migrating from the north. Adventurous types can take a night hike to see a different side of nature. The birds in Panama are gorgeous and colorful. You can even have your travel agent sign you up for a birding tour. Better yet, see the birds from their vantage point by zip-lining through the trees! These are just a few suggestions to enjoy during your visit. Whenever I travel, I like to try something new, exciting, or adventurous—something that I can’t experience back at home. Don’t visit Panama without seeing a few beaches. Scuba diving and snorkeling are fantastic here; the reefs are teeming with sea life. Have you ever considered island-hopping? Yes! In Panama, there are literally hundreds of islands waiting for you off the Caribbean coast. Of course, we all have to eat and drink while we’re on vacation. You might be surprised at the strong influence the surrounding islands and countries have on Panamanian cuisine. Luckily, it’s all delicious. Try local favorites like fresh ceviche, arroz con guandu, tamales, and tortillas (they’re different from the Mexican versions you may be used to). Buy raspao (a snow cone) from a street vendor. Compare the coffees of Panama with your usual at home and find out why they are considered some of the best in the world. What a perfect start to a vacation morning—Panamanian coffee and fresh, hot hojaldras (fry bread). I hope you can see why Panama and its canal should be on your bucket list. The country has so much to offer in the way of history, culture, food, nature, and just plain fun! Enterprising Ideas
Mobile Animal Clinic Caring for Your Littlest Loved Ones By Cynthia Jeffrey
Trusting our beloved pets to another person is difficult. We want someone who will love our pets as we do. While that may not be possible, the staff members at the Mobile Animal Clinic truly recognize that pets are part of the family. And while they no longer make mobile visits, they kept the name so clients would know to expect the same integrity of care. The environment inside the clinic creates a sense of calm as well as a sense of professional aptitude. Staff members call clients by name and gently welcome all furry friends in for their exams. The doctor’s pets may even provide a furry welcome, as they often accompany their people to the clinic. The exam rooms are comfortable and pleasing to your pet’s senses. Extra care is taken for the overly anxious pet or those that can be easily over-stimulated. At times, you will see clients just walking around the clinic in order to prepare their pets for an initial exam. Getting comfortable and familiar with the smells and sounds of the clinic can go a long way toward ensuring a great experience. This fully equipped clinic offers full veterinary services and specializes in small animals: dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, and pocket pets. Extended hours provide opportunities to see the doctors when needed. They offer a variety of time slots to fit your family’s schedule, including four hours on Saturdays, opening at 7:00 a.m. every weekday, and staying open until 8:00 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. The Mobile Animal Clinic prides itself on caring for the whole animal. This is not a “vaccination clinic;” they want to care for the entire animal, providing extensive exams and creating relationships with both pets and their owners. Building relationships is the core of their practice. Annual exams create an opportunity for the vet to complete a proper examination, ask questions, and compare progress from the previous years. Dr. Kati Asherin reminds us that “as pet owners, you see your pets every day and may not be able to notice changes in your pet’s weight.” Regular visits to the clinic provide an opportunity to note those subtle changes in weight, fur, or overall personality. Another way to protect your pet is to have it microchipped. Even the calmest of pets may be startled and run, ultimately losing its way home. Micro-chipping allows any clinic to scan an unknown pet and make sure it gets back home, where it belongs. (If you move, don’t forget to update your pet’s information for tracking purposes.) The clinic staff takes pride in treating your pets as they would their own, or as they would treat members of their own family. Happy pet owners continue to stay

Spring Cleaning from the Floor and Up A Cleaner, Healthier Home
By Loretta McCollum
This time of year, everyone is focusing on spring cleaning. It’s the perfect time of the year to open all the windows, clear out the clutter, and deep-clean everything! We’ve been stuck inside our homes all winter, with dirt and odors along for the ride. People and pets have left their marks on our carpets and furniture, making this the best place to start. The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends professionally cleaning your carpet every 12-18 months. Always be sure to check your carpet manufacturer’s guidelines to see what they suggest for your particular carpet or upholstery type. To keep your carpets looking their best and feeling fresh and clean, it is recommended to look into a professional carpet cleaning company. Hot water extraction, otherwise known as steam cleaning, is one effective method. This method begins by pre-treating the carpet with a solution to break down dirt and odors. Next, a pressurized hot water rinse is applied to rid your carpet of the debris and detergent. During the rinsing step, a powerful wet vacuum is used to remove the steam, along with the remaining dirt and detergent. This method is great for removing strongly embedded oils or debris. Because a higher temperature of water is used, it works well for disinfecting and sanitizing your carpets, as well. Hot carbonating extraction is another extremely effective
method for carpet cleaning. This method is a faster-drying option than steam cleaning. Hot carbonating extraction uses 80 percent less water than steam cleaning, which reduces drying time to one to two hours. Because keeping our homes clean and safe is important and almost everyone is more environmentally conscious these days, look for a method that utilizes a safe, non-toxic cleaning solution for your carpet cleaning. What makes hot carbonating extraction so effective is the combination of the green certified solution and the active bubbly properties of the carbonation that penetrates the dirt deeply embedded in your carpet. assists in breaking up the dirt and lifting it to the surface. (Similar to the way club soda can lift a stain from your favorite blouse!) With less drying time, your home runs a lower risk of bacteria and mold growth that excess water may typically cause, resulting in a cleaner, healthier home. When choosing your carpet cleaning professional, it is important to do some homework, ask questions, and get estimates. Make sure you are aware of all of the services included in your estimate. Do they offer any protection? Does the estimate include moving your furniture for you? Be sure to mention if you or someone in the family has allergies or is sensitive to certain chemicals. Lastly, look into the company to check if they have the Seal of Approval (SOA) from the Carpet and Rug Institute. Area rugs and furniture can sometimes be the focal point of your home, attracting more dirt and bacteria than you realize, especially rugs in high-traffic areas. The cleaning of area rugs and upholstery is just as important as cleaning your carpets and can be just as sensitive, if not more. When having area rugs and upholstery cleaned, you will want to follow many of the same guidelines as with carpet cleaning. It is always best to have a professional cleaning company following the manufacturer’s guidelines for the particular fabric. Most modern carpet and upholstery is treated with a stain and dirt protector when first installed. Over time, regular, professional cleanings can sometimes break down that protectant, depending on which chemicals are used. To prevent this from happening to you, you may ask to have a protectant reapplied, and it is best to do it paired with your regular cleaning schedule. The protectant is usually sprayed on and will prevent spills and stains from soiling your freshly cleaned carpets and upholsteries. Professional carpet cleaning will restore the look and feel of your carpet, rugs, and upholstery. Dirt can dull color and makes carpets and rugs feel coarse. Regular cleanings will help extend the life of your investments and keep your home healthier! Cancer and Diabetes in Pets Prevention and Treatment By Kathy Glow
Our pets bring so much joy into our lives. It is devastating when they develop a serious disease or illness. Knowing some of the signs and symptoms of these diseases can help us keep our furry friends healthy. Cancer is a deadly disease that can affect pets just as it affects humans. Both heredity and environmental factors can contribute to the development of cancer. The disease can manifest as a tumor in a certain part of the body or it can be generalized (all over the body). Signs of cancer in pets can vary widely. They may include lumps (which may or may not be malignant), swelling, persistent sores, abnormal discharge from any part of the body, unusually bad breath, lethargy, unexplained weight loss, sudden lameness, unusual stools, increased diarrhea or vomiting, decreased or loss of appetite, persistent sores or skin infections, or difficulty breathing, urinating, or defecating. Although cats and dogs of any age or breed can develop cancer, it is more common in older pets. No one breed of cat is more likely than another to develop cancer, but some dog breeds are more susceptible. Boxers, Boston terriers, Labradors, and golden retrievers most commonly develop tumors or lymphoma. Large and giant breeds such as Great Danes and Saint Bernards are more likely to suffer from bone cancer than smaller breeds. Cats with white ears and heads and dogs with light-colored or short hair are more susceptible to skin cancer. If you detect a lump on your pet, or any other symptoms that concern you, have your pet examined. Your vet will biopsy a tumor and possibly remove it for diagnosis by a pathologist. Diagnostic tests, such as radiographs, ultrasounds, and blood evaluation, may also be helpful in determining if cancer is present or if it has spread. As with humans, treatment options vary depending on the type and stage of cancer. Some cancers can be cured; others cannot. Your pet’s doctor may suggest any combination of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or immunotherapy. Some pet owners opt for no treatment of the cancer, in which case palliative care, including pain relief, should be considered. There are many things you can do to make your pet comfortable at the end of its life, so talk to your vet about your options. Some cancer in pets is preventable. Monitoring the sun exposure of pets with light fur or keeping them indoors can greatly reduce their risk of skin cancer. Feeding them a healthy diet, keeping their weight under control, and reducing their exposure to both indoor and outdoor toxins is important, as well. Having your pet spayed or neutered also prevents certain types of cancer. Another disease that affects both cats and dogs is diabetes. Diabetes in pets is a complex disease caused by either a lack of the hormone insulin or an inadequate response to insulin. If left untreated, it can cause many complicated health issues for your pet. Signs of diabetes include changes in appetite, exces-

sive thirst or increase in water consumption, weight loss, increased urination, unusually sweet-smelling or fruity breath, lethargy, dehydration, urinary tract infections, vomiting, cataract formation, blindness, and chronic skin infections. Cats may urinate in areas other than their litter box and may look unkempt or ungroomed. The exact cause of diabetes in pets is unknown, though genetics, pancreatic disease, and certain medications can play a contributing role. Overweight and older pets run a greater risk of developing diabetes. Male cats are more commonly afflicted than females, while female dogs run a higher risk than males. Certain dog breeds, such as Australian terriers, standard and miniature schnauzers, dachshunds, poodles, keeshonds, and Samoyeds may also have a greater risk of developing the disease. To diagnose diabetes in your pet, your veterinarian will collect information about clinical signs, perform a physical examination, and check blood work and urinalysis. Fortunately, just as in humans, diabetes is a manageable condition in pets. Treatment is based on how severe the signs of disease are and whether there are any other health issues that could complicate therapy. If caught in the early stages, pets will respond to oral medication and diet changes. For many pets, insulin injections based on weight are necessary for adequate regulation of blood glucose levels. Your vet can show you how to give the insulin injections at home, as well as test your pet’s glucose levels. It’s important to give your pet regular meals and insulin at the same time every day, avoid treats that are high in glucose, and provide opportunities for regular exercise. Cancer and diabetes are two serious medical conditions that can affect our pets. If we keep an eye out for the signs and symptoms of these diseases and know how to help prevent them, we can help our pets live long and healthy lives. Positive Perspective
Make Happiness A Priority! Everyone Get Happy “Your life is supposed to feel good to you.”—Abraham-Hicks Pretty simple, isn’t it? So why do we always seem to make it so difficult? Let’s get happy! Between bills, social commitments, work, family, and you know—life, being happy isn’t always at the top of our priority list. Why is it that we find it so easy to put our happiness at the bottom of our priority list rather than the top? It’s time to change that. I think it’s safe to say that (almost) everyone would prefer to be happy as opposed to some of those other choices of feelings, such as grumpy, angry, sad, fearful, depressed, etc. The great thing about a mood—any mood—is that it can always be changed. In fact, we have total control over how we feel. The choice is up to us. So why not make the decision to be happy and joyful today? In fact, you may even be able to help move others into that place of happiness with you. Consider what a friendly smile to a stranger can do. One small gesture to make another person smile or laugh can go a long way, not only for his or her well-being, but also for yours. Have you ever been in a drive-thru, and the person in front of you bought your order? Did it put a smile on your face? Did you then return the favor by purchasing the person’s order behind you? There are lots of opportunities every day to choose happiness over any other emotion, yet often we do not choose it. We find that it’s

easier to be frustrated or depressed by situations rather than trying to find the positive in them. “Even if happiness forgets you a little bit, never completely forget about it.” —Jacques Prévert Don’t get me wrong, being happy 100 percent of the time is pretty much an impossibility, and if you hold that up as your expectation, you will most likely fail. However, striving to find happiness in every day (even if it’s hidden) is something we can all do. “The really happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery when on a detour.” —Unknown So let’s enjoy the scenery. Do at least one little thing that brings a smile to your face every day. There is always going to be a plethora of things to put you in a bad mood. It is up to all of us to ignore the negatives and realize what is in our control. We should relish in the fact that we can control our mood—one of the most important things, if not the most important thing, in our lives. “The Constitution only guarantees the American people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself.” —Benjamin Franklin
