Do Not Disturb Did you get your family vacation in yet? Better hurry up! Wow, what a whirlwind of a summer. Do you feel it, too? Summer just doesn’t last as long as it used to! Over the last couple of years, I’ve stolen a few minutes here and there to read about “living.” A common theme through a lot of these works is to live “in the now.” I’ve contemplated this and have set it as a goal in my life every day. I have found that this goal is more challenging than any other I have ever set for myself. We all lead very busy lives. With work, kids, spouses, grandkids, friends—there is so much DEMAND for our attention. My personal opinion is that most of us try to accommodate everybody, just about all of the time. Let’s face it…that can be difficult. Making a decision to live in the now has helped. When I’m on the phone or with family and friends, I stop what I’m doing, stop “multitasking,” and give them my undivided attention. (I have even found myself saying these words out loud to give my own being a heads-up.) I think that the digital age complicates things. Computers, iPads, and cell phones have been the biggest challenges to us all. How can you live in the now when your cell phone is making noises at you…and your computer and iPad are doing the same? I am working on “turning off,” even for just a few moments a day. A few years ago, my brother Steve showed me a great button on my phone: “Do Not Disturb.” Phones are different from the rest of the electronics. It’s not that hard to shut down our computers and iPads. But our phones? It’s our emergency connection to all those people in our lives. The Do Not Disturb option goes on religiously when I head to bed. My “Contacts” can still call through, even if I’m asleep. The rest of the noises stop, and I can get a good night of sleep. I have found myself setting my phone to Do Not Disturb even during my waking hours, when I am attempting to live in the now, as well. This works for my friends, for my family, and for ME. This button allows me to get closer to that goal of living in the now. Hey, technology is supposed to make our lives easier, right? Hope you enjoy the rest of your summer. Wouldn’t it be great if we could put our lives on Do Not Disturb until the kids head back to school? Now THAT would be a vacation! See you next month.

Simplify Summer Fashion Make Time to Stop and Smell the Roses By Holly Bell
Summer in the Midwest is a time to slow down and smell the roses, the scent of newly cut grass, or just the freshness in the air. This year, we vow to enjoy it more, as it flies by so quickly. Taking time to enjoy the wonder of summer calms our minds and nourishes our bodies. One way to make more time to relax is to simplify your daily routines. Fashion can be simplified for the warmer months, when we don’t want to spend a lot of time indoors, putting together outfits. During the colder months, it is time-consuming to put on layer after layer of clothing in order to keep warm, but we can’t really avoid it. In the summer, though, just one layer will do—sometimes, just one piece! From dressy to beachy casual, the jumpsuit has made a glorious comeback for summer 2017. Particularly flattering is the crisscrossed side-tie style. It mimics the famous Gloria Vanderbilt wrap dress that whittles the middle and gracefully drapes across the body. With a looser leg and a silky fabric, this piece could not be simpler, but it’s also elegant. Of course, there are unlimited twists on the jumpsuit. For the young at heart, there is the romper. When you think of a romper, it may first conjure up a vision of a 5-year-old, but rompers have grown up! The romper is a great vacation wardrobe addition; it’s easy and cute to pull over a swimsuit when you want to go into a restaurant but don’t have anywhere to change. One-piece summer fashion saves time by eliminating all the mixing and matching decisions we have to www.nomadictraders.com make when it’s cold outside. Another way to keep things simpler is to use one item several different ways. Essential for smarter vacation packing, multi-use pieces of clothing are also trending. The newest edition to this genre of clothing is the “luxe track pant.” Some of us may be skeptical about this, as it reminds us of our high school sports days, but the track pant is hot on runways worldwide. The secret to putting together this street style is to think of it as a smart pant. It pairs nicely with an off-theshoulder top and wedges, but it also looks good with sneakers and a tank top. With sportswear as a consistent theme for dressing this summer, effortless style is a hot trend. One thing I would advise against is wearing a complete tracksuit. Better to break up the jacket and pants to create stylish outfits that star each piece individually. My favorite summer onepiece dressing staple is the sundress. (If you find a great sundress that’s a little too bare, or if you’re expecting

a chillier evening, top it off with a sheer cardigan sweater or a short jean jacket.) Sundresses are youthful but not just for the young. Two of my favorite flattering silhouettes are the fit-and-flare and the chemise. If you have a curvy figure, the fit-and-flare will show off your curves in a most flattering way. If you are straight up and down, the chemise skims over your body with ease, creating a long, slim column. Another great cut for sundresses is the trapeze. This newer silhouette is more fitted throughout the shoulders and bust, flaring out to a triangle at the hem. This style is comfortable and easy to wear for most everyone. Fortunately, designers have finally decided to let us choose the hemline of our dresses. For those blessed with great legs, go ahead and go above the knee! Knee-length works for almost everyone. For a little elegance, go for the maxi or a calf-length dress. All lengths are fashionable now. Another fun thing about summer is color. Fashion designers currently favor bright colors and wild patterns, but, in the Midwest, there is very little color and pattern being worn. We Midwesterners can be quite rigid in our color choices, which makes the bolder looks from the runways a little unexpected here. Color and pattern are so on trend, and they can make a big impact that sets you apart from the crowd. As we enjoy the beauty and lushness of summer, let’s give ourselves the gift of simplicity. Put that to-do list away; it will wait. Take a moment to eat lunch outdoors. Park a few blocks away and enjoy the sunshine while you walk to your destination. Get a simple summer haircut, or just pull your hair up and twist it in a bun. Lighten up your makeup routine, and keep your wardrobe decisions quick and easy. As we know, summer doesn’t last nearly long enough in the Midwest. Let’s take the time to enjoy it while it’s here! pan. Add 1 cup of orzo and sauté until lightly browned. Return the chicken to the skillet. Add 2 cups of chicken or vegetable broth, along with a variety of cut-up seasonal vegetables: zucchini, squash, onions, carrots, celery, or canned artichoke hearts. Stir and bring to a boil. Add the juice of one lemon. Add more broth, if needed. Lower the heat to simmer, then cover and cook for 20 minutes. Add a handful of Kalamata olives, stir, and serve. Ruth’s Crab Louis Chopped Salad In a small bowl, mix 1 cup of mayonnaise with 1 Tablespoon of Dijon, a dash of honey or sugar, and 1 Tablespoon of sweet pickle juice (optional). Refrigerate. Wash, dry, and tear or chop one half of a head of iceberg or romaine lettuce, and mix with a bag of field greens. Place the greens in a bowl. Add 3 chopped-up hard-boiled eggs and 1 cup of (thawed) frozen peas. Add fresh veggies like sliced radishes and chopped onion, carrots, and celery. Sprinkle in salt and pepper to taste. Add 1–2 cans of crab meat (drained) or use cooked, fresh crab. Mix in the mayonnaise, then taste and adjust. Add sliced grape tomatoes and serve. Bourbon Chicken Mix one-fourth cup of bourbon (or apple juice) with one-fourth cup of brown sugar, 2 Tablespoons of ketchup, 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar, one-half cup of water, one-third cup of soy sauce, and 1 Tablespoon of cornstarch. Set aside. Heat 2 Tablespoons of oil in a large pan. Add 2 pounds of boneless, skinless chicken thighs. Season with salt and pepper. Brown for 5 minutes (until pieces are golden). Add 3 cloves of minced garlic. Pour the sauce over the chicken (add more water, if
needed). Simmer on low for 5 minutes. Serve over cooked rice and additional cooked vegetables (a bag of frozen stir fry veggies would be good). Garnish with a few cut-up green onions. Magical Lemon Dessert Blend 2 cups of flour with 1 cup of soft butter. Mix until a ball forms. Press out evenly into the bottom of a 9x13-inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes and then cool. Mix two 8-ounce packages of softened cream cheese with 1 cup of sugar. Spread this mixture over the cooled crust, then refrigerate. Mix 2 small packages of instant lemon pudding with three and one-half cups of milk—mix for 5 minutes. Spread this over the cooled cream cheese mixture. Refrigerate for 2–3 hours. Before serving, spread a container of frozen whipped topping (thawed) or 2 cups of whipped whipping cream over the top. Chill leftovers. Eclipse Cookies—Celebrate the solar eclipse on August 21! Cream three-fourths cup of sugar with 1 cup of butter and 1 teaspoon of vanilla for 3–4 minutes (until fluffy). Add 1 extralarge egg and mix for 1 additional minute. Mix in 2 cups of flour, one-half teaspoon of baking soda, one-half teaspoon of cream of tartar, and one-half teaspoon of salt. Refrigerate for an hour. Roll the dough into small balls and press them flat on a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes, then cool. Frost cookies with half vanilla icing (tinted pale yellow), and the other half chocolate icing. Editor’s Note: Kate has been an Omaha area culinary instructor since 1997. Achieving Optimal Well-Being Feel and Look Your Best Every Day, at Every Age
By Robyn V. Powell
We all want to maintain our health and feel great as we age. Yet, almost all of us over the age of 40 (sometimes, even younger) begin to experience weight gain, headaches, trouble sleeping, memory loss, hot flashes, night sweats, anxiety, and low libido—all symptoms associated with hormone loss. Despite leading a healthy lifestyle, exercising, and eating right, we sense the loss of our energy and vitality. We visit our physicians and are prescribed medications to treat our symptoms. We have our hormones tested and are told our levels are normal…for our age. But what if “normal” just doesn’t feel right? What if we need to get to “optimal” levels to feel our best? The good news for women suffering through the symptoms of sub-optimal hormone levels is that they are often easy to correct. At Optima Medical Hormone Replacement & Aesthetic Center, Joleen Lake and her team use the latest advanced medical treatments to help women feel and look their very best. At the forefront of these treatments is bio-identical hormone supplementation to maintain optimal hormone levels. “Regaining our hormones bolsters our bodies and minds and prevents the debility that can accompany the aging process,” explains Joleen. Joleen’s passion for bio-identical hormone treatment stems from her time as an OB-GYN nurse practitioner. “I saw so many patients struggle with the debilitating symptoms associated with hormonal changes, like bloating, cramping, mood swings, and hot flashes, and yet—their hormone levels were considered normal,” she relates. “When these women were treated with bioidentical hormones, the results were astounding. People were so much happier! I saw bio-identical hormone treatment change women’s lives.” Joleen encourages women to be proactive when it comes to their health care. “Be your own advocate,” she stresses. For women whose symptoms are affecting their lifestyle or causing them to have to plan their lives around certain days of the month, Joleen’s goal is to let them know that there is help out there. “That moment, when you decide enough is enough, and you make the decision to seek help, you can come in and feel confident that you will meet with a caring team of professionals who will take the time to listen,” Joleen asserts. “Our staff is hand-picked and specially trained in hormone replacement. We are here to share information and let you know what your options are so you can make an informed decision.” “After discussing symptoms and quality of life issues you are facing,” Joleen continues, “we do an in-depth analysis of your hormone levels through diagnostic blood testing. When lab results indicate an imbalance,

Seeing people feel revitalized is one of the greatest joys for me. As a nurse practitioner, it’s very rewarding knowing that I can help make people feel better.” One patient shares her experience. “Joleen and the staff at Optima have revitalized my life with hormone replacement therapy. Before my treatments, I had low energy, mood swings, and felt depressed much of the time. I have gained new youth and have been able to do things as if I were in my 20s again! I’ve also taken advantage of aesthetics and skin care services, and I not only feel younger, I look younger. I owe a great debt of gratitude to Joleen and her staff. They are amazing!” Getting older doesn’t mean having to accept chronic decline and a diminished quality of life. Many of the uncomfortable symptoms associated with aging can be addressed. We can regain the youthful resilience that enables us to cope gracefully with the stressors that challenge us every day. “You can look forward to spending the second half of your life as a healthy, productive, hormonally-balanced woman,” says Joleen. “We’re here to partner with you every step of the way on your journey to optimal health. We’ll help you to reach your wellness goals while looking your very best.” Optima Medical Hormone Replacement & Aesthetic Center is located at 2608 South 158th Plaza. A Woman’s Work
Family Entertainment It’s Reunion Season!
By Sharon Knierim
Here we are again—in August. If you haven’t already attended (or avoided) an annual family reunion this year, don’t worry. You’ll probably be offered more chances as August finishes up and September rolls around. For many of us, family reunions can be painful reminders of embarrassing childhood memories or the loss of loved ones. But if you think through what a family reunion really means, you’ll see that there’s no need to avoid your annual opportunity to see these people. A family reunion, just like any other gathering of people with shared interests or shared pasts, is a celebration of the values most of us hold dear. What goes on at these events? Typically, everyone gets the opportunity to retell the same stories and jokes from years past. The same people form the same groups and reminisce about the good old days. What makes them the good old days? They are made good because we know the endings to the stories. Don’t forget—reunions can be a gathering of any group with a shared past, whether you’re technically related or not. Some friends gather for their annual Army or Navy reunion and bring the whole family. Don’t discount high school reunions! You’ve probably attended at least one of these events made up of people who were not yet fully formed when they knew each other. It can be fun to discover who they turned into and how

they have lived their lives. Everyone should attend at least one of these reunions to justify their own sanity. They are fun and only last a few hours. When it’s over, everyone has something new to think about. At family reunions, you are entertained by characters that Hollywood could never dream up. There is old Uncle Joe, with his insatiable love of babies. Each year, he gathers the newly born on his lap and jostles them for the annual Uncle Joe/New Baby photo. By the time the camera clicks, most of the babies are howling with fear and distrust. Eventually, they are handed back to their anxious mothers for calming, but for at least half an hour, we are all treated to terror-filled screaming and a full flow of tears. Who loves it? Uncle Joe loves it. This activity makes his year! Now, that’s entertainment! Don’t forget Cousin Maude. I hope she doesn’t know that

her code name is Cousin Maudlin. Cousin Maude is a woman who never settled down into marriage. She claims to have never found a man interesting enough to hold her attention. Instead, she spends much of her free time distributing pamphlets about health and safety. Cleanliness is high on her list, and she loves to share her knowledge about fleas, ticks, and handwashing. (Don’t let her see you with your fingers near your nose—she has a pamphlet for that.) We love her because only someone in the family could talk to us like that, and we know she has our best interests at heart. We think of her as an infomercial that comes with its own sanitary hand wipes. Best known for his hands-on approach is Lester. I do not know whether he is a third cousin or some distant uncle, but he is best approached from across the table. He certainly is active and full of schemes. Most difficult to avoid is Hubie. Hubie sells insurance and annuities and is always on the prowl for new clients. He comes prepared with lots of information about life protection and personal financial security. When he arrives at family shindigs with a briefcase under his right arm and a bowl of coleslaw in his left hand, we know we’re in for an insurance lesson. Do we love it? Yes, we do, because he’s family, and he cares about us. No family reunion would be complete without the boy cousins getting into food fights, followed by their water pistol battles, which often soak some of the elders, much to their displeasure. But family is family, so we accept it. If you are fortunate enough to attend an annual reunion that has been archived year after year, you are in luck. One of the events we like to attend dedicates a full picnic table to scrapbooks from years past. Looking through those pages is an opportunity to see those people now gone gazing back at us. We embrace them for their contributions to the family and the wonderful memories they gave us. In the albums of memories, we can see birth announcements, wedding invitations, obituaries, and even newspaper stories about some of us through the years. It’s priceless. If you’re deciding whether or not to attend a family reunion this year, just remember: You, too, are part of the entertainment. Pack up that fried chicken and cherry pie and go have a good time. The cost of admission is only a smile. WE

Vantage Point
Hightower Reff Law Clarity and Commitment for Family and Criminal Law By Traci Osuna
In 2012, Tracy Hightower-Henne and Susan Reff were independent attorneys working in close proximity. Tracy’s practice focused on family law; Susan practiced both family law and criminal law. “We had our own practices but shared an office,” Susan says. “There was a lot of overlap in our business, and we were referring cases to each other…that’s why we decided to form the partnership.” Five years later, Hightower Reff Law is one of Omaha’s leading law firms to focus on both criminal defense and family law. Two years ago, the partners brought family law attorney Scott Hahn on board to round out their practice. A large part of their practice is focused on family law, but the criminal defense side plays an important role, as well. “Sometimes, when one of our clients is going through their family law case, something will happen and she’ll need an attorney to handle a criminal issue for her,” explains Susan. “Sometimes it’s a DUI, sometimes there are allegations of child abuse or neglect—that is where that criminal background comes in.” The area of family law is vast and varied, involving such issues as divorce, child custody, child support, spousal support, property division, and modification of court decrees. Both Tracy and Scott are certified in the collaborative divorce process. “Collaborative divorce is a structured process for people who want to go through a more amicable way of handling their divorce,” explains Tracy. In collaborative divorce, the spouses agree from day one to work together to come to an agreement. “Spouses know that any agreement they come to is going to be better than what a judge can provide,” says Tracy. “They have a lot more control over their case, and the judge is not making the decisions.” The traditional divorce process is known for its often contentious nature. With a collaborative divorce, the couple will not be dealing with court-ordered decrees and judgments from an outsider who does not know the family dynamics. The idea of collaborative divorce is not new, says Susan, but it is becoming more common. “Attorneys were doing it before…working together to come to an agreement with their clients. This is just a more structured way of getting it done.” “The great thing about the collaborative process is that the client never even sets foot in the courthouse,” says Tracy. She explains that a judge signs off on the decree that is presented to the court. “Our hope is that collaborative divorce becomes more prevalent,” says Susan. “As attorneys, it’s nice to
18

work together, to help clients Attorneys through the process and not have those court battles, Tracy Hightower-Henne especially if it feels like the couple is able to talk and work and Susan Reff things out.” Handling a criminal case is significantly different from working in family law, Susan shares. When a client is charged with a crime, there may be very little time to prepare. “We know what the crime is, and so there are set penalties,” Susan says. “We usually know the first court date when the client comes to us. You don’t get to plan, you don’t get to prepare…it’s already done.” In both family law and criminal defense, their first priority is identifying their clients’ goals. “In a criminal case, fewer outcomes are possible. You can take your case to trial, and you’re found either guilty or not guilty of the charges,” Susan explains. “You can try to work a plea deal…that’s pretty much it.” Susan shares that some new clients who have never been involved in a criminal case will say they want their charges dismissed. “I don’t have the power to do that,” she says. “I only have the power to try and prove that the state shouldn’t charge you…that they can’t make their case against you.” Clients often say that their main goal is to be done with the process as soon as possible. “That’s not always wise,” Susan advises. “If you rush through a case, you might miss an opportunity to make a challenge that could have a good result for the client. That’s my job as a criminal defense attorney: to point out the weaknesses in the state’s case and then use those to my advantage.” The attorneys at Hightower Reff Law work diligently to help their clients achieve the best outcomes for their legal concerns, but they also have the interests of the Omaha community in mind. Tracy and Susan are both active with the Nebraska Bar Association. Tracy is actively involved with the Nebraska Innocence Project, and Susan was the recipient of the 2015 Nebraska Families Collaborative “Community Champion for Children and Families” Award. Fresh Concept
Financial Advisors Are You Prepared for the Golden Years? By Connie Keck
For those of us who don’t work in the financial industry, having a “financial advisor” sounds like a great idea—and it is. But what, exactly, is a financial advisor? When should you get one? If you already have one, does she have the right expertise and experience to help you meet your financial goals? A financial advisor can provide many services to clients, including offering financial advice, preparing tax returns, managing investments, and drafting estate plans. The term “financial advisor” has no precise definition within the industry and does not necessarily indicate a particular licensure. This can make finding the right kind of financial professional for you a little tricky. According to Forbes, there are four basic types of financial advisors, though a single person may qualify as more than one type. Registered representatives, also called brokers or investment representatives, are paid on commission to sell investment and insurance products. Their primary sales licenses are Series 6 or Series 7. A broker’s job is to sell investments, not to draft your family’s comprehensive financial plan. Financial planners have no particular licensing requirements. Essentially, anyone can claim to be a financial planner, and just because someone isn’t licensed to sell investments doesn’t mean she can’t offer good financial advice. That said, there are certain professional designations to look for that suggest a person is educated in the field and qualified to provide financial advice. Your vetting process should limit your selection to those who have earned one of these designations: CFP (certified financial planner), CPA/ PFS (certified public accountant/personal financial specialist), or ChFC (chartered financial consultant). Many people who call themselves financial advisors are, more specifically, registered investment advisors (RIAs). This distinction is important because these professionals are financial fiduciaries, which means they are required to act in their clients’ best financial interests. They are held to the highest ethical standards in the financial services industry. Some CPAs secure the RIA certification to demonstrate to their clients that they can help with comprehensive financial planning. Money managers are in charge of an investment portfolio, not a comprehensive financial plan. They may make decisions for investors without the investors’ advance approval. In some families, investment decisions are made exclusively by men. It’s important, however, for both partners to take part in the financial planning and investment decisions for the family. Some things to consider: Who makes the decisions when it comes to planning for continuing education for your children or any member of your family? Does your family have enough life insurance benefits to sustain you should there be a loss of one of the income producers in the
20
August 2017
family? Do you have a long term care policy? Do you have an investment or pension plan through your employer? If you don’t work outside the home, do you contribute to an IRA on a regular basis? Do you have a basic savings plan? As you work through the myriad of financial concerns and issues you may have, it is important to seek out information and a financial advisor who can help you maneuver through the maze of financial planning and help you set both long-term and shortterm goals. Finding a financial advisor who is a good fit for you and your financial goals takes some research. To get started, ask coworkers, family members, or friends if they can recommend someone. You can also find advisors through professional organizations online. For example, if you seek a CFP, you can go to www. cfp.net and click on Find a CFP Professional to search by geographic area. Many financial advisors will offer a short informational session at no charge, to see if they could meet your needs. When you speak with a potential advisor, be sure to ask the following questions: • How do you charge for your services (commission, fees, or both)? • How much do you charge for your services? • What licenses, credentials, or other certifications do you have? • What services do you provide? • Do you specialize in a particular type of client? • What is your investment approach? • How much contact do you have with your clients? • Will I be working only with you or with a larger team? • What makes your client experience unique? After the interview, recall whether the advisor seemed interested in you. Did she ask questions about you and your financial goals? You want an advisor who is interested in your individual circumstances, not someone with a one-size-fits-all-clients approach. Be sure to confirm the credentials of any potential advisor before working with her. To learn more about a financial professional, you can ask if her business is overseen by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (www.finra.org) or the Securities and Exchange Commission (www.sec.gov). The website
www.womensedition.com
for each of these regulatory agencies has a search function into which you can type the advisor or firm’s name for more information. To see if a CFP is truly a CFP, you can search for her with the CFP Board at www.cfp.net. It is difficult to plan for the future if you don’t have an understanding of where you are today. What does your current financial picture look like? Do you have life insurance, a long term care policy, health insurance, a savings plan, and a retirement account? Once you can see where you are, you can take a look at where you want to go. Review your long-term and short-term financial goals so you can discuss them with your financial advisor. What is your vision for your financial future? How can you get there? Do your current investments, savings plans, and other finances put you on the road to reach your goals? How can you stay on track? If you feel you are not on the right path to reach your financial goals, take a look at your plan and review with your advisor how it might be changed to reflect the vision, goals, and objectives you want to have in place when you retire. At what point in time should you work with a financial advisor? It’s never too early to seek financial advice. Many workplaces have retirement plans and pension plans. They probably work with an investment firm that will manage the funds for their employees. When you sign up for a 401(k) or other investment vehicle, an investment advisor will talk with you to set up your account. This advisor will ask you about your risk tolerance regarding investments and will help you select investments that reflect your tolerance of risk. After a retirement account is set up, don’t just forget about it! You will need to
revisit your plan periodically. How often to reassess your goals is an excellent issue to discuss with your financial advisor. There are some additional issues to consider when you are putting a plan together for your financial future, even though they are not strictly financial questions. If you don’t already have an estate plan, including a will, you should create one. You may think that an estate plan is just for people with sizeable assets, but everyone should have one, regardless of income. This document will lay out how your assets are to be disbursed upon your death. This is especially important if you have minor children—if you don’t name a legal guardian for them and indicate how and when they should access your assets, the courts will make all these decisions for you. These issues may seem unpleasant, but they are important, as they will affect your financial investments and planning strategy. Keep in mind that you, your family, and the financial plan you make will change over time. The needs you have today may be very different from the needs you will have a year from now, or five years, or 20 years. The important thing is that you become an active participant in planning your financial future. At times, you will have to make adjustments in your plan to continue to move forward with realizing your financial goals. This does not mean that you didn’t plan properly in the first place—on the contrary, it means that you’re paying proper attention to your financial journey. Get started! No matter what your finances look like today, you could benefit from the guidance of a financial advisor. Shopping for a Formal Gown? Find It at Suburban Bridal
By Marge Shoemaker
Wedding customs have changed over the years. For example, rather than the parents of the bride paying for everything, the bride and groom often take care of it. Destination weddings, which can combine the ceremony and the honeymoon, may eliminate some guests. The bride doesn’t always have to wear white, and she may well opt for creamier tones. Members of the wedding party don’t always wear the same thing—bridesmaids often wear different styles of dress in different hues of the same color. The mothers of the bride and groom are no longer limited to matronly designs. This is all good news to Mary Lou Scherer, owner of Suburban Bridal, which has been a family-owned business since 1967. Kim, a recently-hired sales associate, informs us that “Mary Lou really knows her stuff! She can tell you the provenance of a fabric… details most people aren’t aware of.” The staff members care deeply about each customer’s time in the store. “We’re more interested in the customer’s experience in finding the right dress than the sale itself,” Kim says. Mary Lou makes sure her staff is trained on how

to interpret line and design in order to fit the customer’s figure. Kim continues, “Mary Mary Lou Scherer, owner Lou really cares about the bride’s happiness and satisfaction.” Mary Lou particularly enjoys the changes in social occasion gowns for mothers of the bride and groom. “Mothers today are often fit, hip, and style-conscious. They know they don’t have to have a fashion model figure to look good. The important thing is that the design of the dress gives her confidence. If she is comfortable in what she is wearing, she will look good,” Mary Lou states. “Think of the last wedding you went to. Can you describe the bride’s dress? What was the bride’s mother wearing? Yes, the bride is the center of
www.womensedition.com
attention, but most people are aware of what the mother wears.” Suburban Bridal has a wide selection of social occasion dresses in stock. “They may be plain or beaded, long or short, baring or covering,” Mary Lou explains. These gowns and dresses are perfect for the mothers of the bride and groom or the bride’s attendants. Most can be worn for other occasions, such as a prom, a dressy party, a special night out, or a formal ball. Mary Lou advises the considerate bride to allow her bridesmaids to choose a color that coordinates with her desired color palette in a style that suits the individual’s figure. “Not every color and style looks good on everyone,” she notes. In the past, custom dictated that all the bridesmaids wear the same color and style. At Suburban Bridal, they believe that a little variety is good, as long as it’s all coordinated. “It’s important for the bridesmaids to choose a style that looks good on them…that they are comfortable in,” Mary Lou reasons. “If a gown can be worn again, it becomes an investment rather than an expensive frock worn once and left to hang in the closet.” Mary Lou’s husband, Mark, joins the conversation by commenting that many people begin their gown-shopping experience online but end up wanting the personal touch of a consultant. “People can get a good idea of what is available and the cost, but they need personal experience to find out what
makes them look good and how the gown feels on,” he notes. “This is a special day, and the bride wants to look her best. It’s important to know how she will feel in the dress.” Many of us like to shop with a friend who will comment honestly on what is becoming to us, but Mark suggests we choose our shopping companions with care. “Friends…even sisters…can be competitive,” Mark points out. “They really don’t want to be outshone, especially if their own wedding is coming up soon.” Mothers generally aren’t competing with their daughters and are usually good choices for shopping companions. Mary Lou carried two majors in fashion and nursing, and she puts her studies to good use in the shop. “If I see too much friction in selecting the dress, I suggest they all go home and think about the dresses they’ve seen,” she relates. Sometimes, she’ll take the bride aside and suggest she come back on her own to make her decision. “If you go home and say, ‘I found the perfect gown!’ everyone will love it,” she tells them. It’s empowering for brides to decide for themselves. Mary Lou’s experience has obviously prepared her to deal with the challenges that accompany this kind of purchase. Suburban Bridal is located in the Millard area, at 4614 South 132nd Street. To reserve a fitting room, call 402-255-0022. For more information—and, of course, photos of dresses—visit www.SuburbanBridalOmaha.com. WE

Ann Bode and Kathleen Yao, both advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) who have recently completed their doctor of nursing practice (DNP) studies, are two of the professionals offering these services to women across the life span. Ann earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Creighton and became a nurse practitioner at UNMC,
where she worked with Dr. Victoria Maclin in women’s health. When Dr. Maclin established HCRM in 2000, Ann came along. Kathleen earned a degree in biology at Creighton, thinking she would continue studies to become a physician. Instead, she decided to follow in her mother’s footsteps as a nurse. Through an accelerated program, she became a cardiology nurse with an interest in fertility. Ann Bode was Kathleen’s preceptor (clinical instructor), and she encouraged Kathleen to join her at HCRM.

The doctor of nursing practice (DNP) degree is relatively new. Support for the DNP program began in 2004, when the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) recommended a program to put research into clinical practice and to facilitate its implementation. Ann and Kathleen worked together on their doctoral project: the implementation of a decision aid for patients diagnosed with cancer. They created a matrix designed to help the patient sift through the process of dealing with her diagnosis. They discuss treatment and fertility options and their costs, and they answer any questions the patient may have. They believe that an informed patient is better able to make an informed decision. Under those conditions, whatever decision is made, that decision is right. Ann and Kathleen feel that their DNP studies have prepared them with a high level of scientific knowledge and the ability to translate that knowledge effectively into practice. The patients at HCRM include men and women because “fertility isn’t just the woman’s problem.” Any person facing a problem that might compromise ovarian function—cancer, a genetic problem, or another illness—should be informed of medical options for preserving fertility. Options for fertility preservation for women include egg freezing, embryo freezing, ovarian transposition, and ovarian suppression. Fertility preservation options for men include sperm banking and testicular sperm extraction. The specialists at HCRM bring a comprehensive approach to infertility and reproductive care. They focus on each patient as a unique individual who needs understanding and information. Success brings satisfaction, for patients and practitioners alike. Ann relates that she gets the most satisfaction from helping women and keeping them healthy. “I love the opportunities I
have to educate patients about their health care,” she shares. “It’s providing personalized care and preventive medicine for the patient as a whole.” Her patient, Mary, affirms Ann’s caring attitude and overall interest in her health. Kathleen reports much the same feeling, adding, “It is so rewarding to be with a patient all the way, from initial interview to final outcome.” Ann and Kathleen agree that seeing the results of their work when the new parents are able to bring in their precious baby is the crowning event…a true celebration! “Of course, we schedule new parent visits during a time when we won’t have new patients waiting,” Ann reminds us. Bringing new babies into the office, Kathleen chimes in, “would truly be insensitive to other patients who haven’t had that successful experience…yet.” In spite of the satisfaction gained by success, the job has some challenges. “Nursing and health care are changing rapidly,” Ann notes, “and the DNP’s role is evolving. We’re charged with forging ahead in defining it, often setting precedent for others.” Kathleen finds a challenge in how the layperson understands medical training. “It can be confusing. People outside the profession often think there is one path followed by all practitioners,” she shares. “Doctors do have a fairly definite path. Nurses, on the other hand, can take different paths to the same end…just as Ann and I have come to the same goal through different paths.” Kathleen and Ann advise us to keep asking questions until we understand our own health and find the right practitioners. “Everyone should look for optimal holistic care. You deserve the best.” Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine is located at 7308 South 142nd Street. Good Looks
You Are Spec-tacular! Express Yourself With Amazing Frames By Monica L. Davis
Having the perfect eyewear allows you to define your personality, customize your individual style, and shape how others perceive you. Truth be told, eyewear tends to convey intelligence, honesty, and trustworthiness. As long as you’ve got the right specs, you can convey all that and anything else you want! This season, you’re sure to find a trending frame silhouette to love, no matter what your style. To help instill a conservative image, professionals typically keep to traditional frame shapes such as ovals, rectangles, and almonds. Also professional is the “brow-line” style, which has a frame on the top of the lens but not on the bottom. These semirimless frames are simple and professional, and they look great on both women and men! Many people with creative and artistic style still prefer the “hipster” look for eyewear. These square-shaped frames are often oversized and have wider black rims. Retro frames are also trending, such as the 1960s “mod” look and cat’s eye frames. Cat’s eye frames are gaining popularity particularly in the academic and business environments. Aviator frames are also back in fashion this season. When selecting the color of your frames, you need to take into consideration characteristics such as your eye color, skin tone, and hair color. One of the favored frame hues this season is the classic tortoise shell. Though no longer made from actual tortoise shells, the pattern of these frames is a classic for a reason—whether you are
a blonde, a brunette, or a redhead, tortoise shell flatters everyone! The classic pattern also works well for professional attire. Silver, brown, or black frames tend to go with everything, including business apparel, and are suitable for men and women. If you are looking for something a little bolder, you could try red, pink, or purple frames! If you have decided to embrace your silvering hair (which is trending all on its own this season), you’ll find that many fun colors pair well with your silvery tresses. For a noticeably savvy look, consider cherry reds and sea blues. Black frames always look classic and polished and will complement your lustrous hair (I’m picturing Diane Keaton and Jamie Lee Curtis here). It’s also important to consider the material that makes up the frame. Choose a frame material with the qualities that are pertinent to your lifestyle. Plastic frames are often constructed from zylonite, a cost-effective, lightweight material often known as “zyl.” Other ›››

plastic frame materials include polyamide, polycarbonate, carbon, and nylon (which is a nearly indestructible material great for an active lifestyle or sports). As an added bonus, many of these materials are considered hypoallergenic. Frames are fabricated from various metal materials, as well. The most common is Monel, a mixture of nickel and copper. Titanium is a popular choice for metal frames because of its lightweight durability and sleek, modern look. If you are fond of the titanium look but not its high price, you might consider beryllium frames. This steel-gray metal resists corrosion and does not tarnish. For the real eyewear connoisseur, custom frames are available in distinctive materials like silver, gold, wood, or even bone. Diamonds, semi-precious stones, and Swarovski crystals can be used to accent frames for the ultimate luxurious touch. In the area of lens technology, the focus remains on protecting eyes from the harmful effects of light (both indoors and out). Long-term exposure to sunlight or the blue light from digital screens is damaging to your eyes. Photochromic lenses, commonly known by the brand name Transitions, darken on exposure to specific types of light of sufficient intensity, most commonly UV. Transitions lenses are making great strides to protect our eyes from these harmful lights. Weekend warriors with sports vision needs might choose polarized lenses, which help reduce light reflecting off of water or snow, or polycarbonate lenses, which are shatter-resistant. Popular lenses for more complicated prescriptions include no-line or invisible bifocals and progressive lenses. These types of lenses feature smooth, less-noticeable transitions between the different focal lengths. Tinted lenses often called “computer glasses” stop some of the blue light from screens from getting to your eyes. These are available with or without prescription vision correction. Obtain your eyewear, along with a proper eye exam, from an optician or a professional optical company. Once your eyewear has been perfectly crafted for you, you will still need to ensure an accurate fit. Ill-fitting glasses can be uncomfortable, affect your vision, and look unprofessional. The optician will adjust your glasses to properly fit your face and ensure that the lenses line up with your eyes correctly. Look and see your best with a new pair of glasses! Income Outcome
Appreciate the Now Slow Down, Enjoy Life Rush, rush, rush. Get to work early; stay late. Run through the fast-food joint to pick up dinner for the family. Load the dishwasher and clean the kitchen while you’re talking on the phone to your sister, whom you haven’t had a chance to call in weeks. “Guard well your spare moments. They are like uncut diamonds.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson Just like any other creation in our lives, the ability to create more time begins with a decision. Does that mean we need to lessen our wantings? No. It simply means that we have to make a new decision. How are we going to live our lives?
By Janet Van deWalle
By asking ourselves the “what feels better?” question, many of us will discover that we have been doing things simply because we have always done them that way. “We are often so caught up in our destination that we forget to appreciate the journey, especially the goodness of the people we meet along the way. Appreciation is a wonderful feeling, don’t overlook it.” —Unknown This is the next step—appreciating the journey. There are moments when we come into contact with friends, family, coworkers. By making a conscious decision to totally put our focus on them and appreciate them, time will, in essence, seem to slow down.
“Try as much as possible to be wholly alive, with all your might, and when you laugh, laugh like hell, and when you get angry, get good and angry. Try to be alive. You will be dead soon enough.” —William Saroyan
“Look for things that you appreciate where you are. It will put you in a place of perfect allowing, even when you are not yet manifesting all that you want.” —Abraham/Hicks
The first step can be as simple as taking a look at how we are spending our time. Let’s remember, the purpose of life is to seek our joy. What are we doing that is not bringing us joy? We have to ask ourselves: Does it feel better to take on that new project at the office, or does it feel better to delegate it? Does it feel better to clean my own house, or does it feel better to finally hire that cleaning service?
The last step? Take your list of “things to do today” and identify the items that you know you will get accomplished today. The other things on your list? Turn them over to the Universe to handle! If we simply recognize that creating our own reality doesn’t mean that we have to do it all by ourselves, that the Universe is there to deliver to us what it is that we want, we can then finally begin to live in the now. Kids Comments
www.womensedition.com
Is it Autism, Illness, or Natural Delay? Don’t Be Afraid to Have Your Child Checked Several times in the last few weeks, the subject of autism has come up. After a friend’s brother died, I asked about the delegation of donations to autism research. Deb said her brother had always had problems in school, with social relationships, and even keeping a job. As an adult, he was finally diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum and was delighted to finally find out what had caused his problems growing up. A week later, the obituary of another friend also asked that donations be made to the study of autism…his son had been diagnosed. I recently completed an interview for this magazine during which we discussed the autism spectrum, among other things. My friend Theresa and I were catching up on our families when she started telling me about the problems some of her nieces and nephews have had. She had recently read about autism and thought that might partially explain the kids’ difficulties. Theresa commented that she doesn’t remember classmates or any of her brothers and sisters being diagnosed with all these troubles and problems. We talked about the more common symptoms of autism, such as delayed speech development, repetitive language or mannerisms, few friends, avoidance or lack of spontaneity or makebelieve, and fixation on objects or tasks. She said her son didn’t talk for a long time and preferred being alone to playing with friends. She wondered if he should have been tested for autism or some related disorder. My grandson Michael was overly focused (which, I think, is only slightly preferable to having an attention deficit) in kindergarten
By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS
and preferred working by himself to group activities. He was eventually diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, which is a disability on the high-functioning end of the autism spectrum. It’s difficult for parents…no, for all of us…to know whether unusual behaviors indicate a disability or are part of growing up. As I mentioned, Deb’s brother was happy to finally have a name for his difficulties. Today, Michael pretty much “goes with the flow” until he gets frustrated with what he considers ineptitude. This is part of his difficulty in relating to other people (we continue working on those social skills). Theresa’s son is functioning well as an adult, but she still worries. If you are concerned about your child’s development, talk to your child’s physician. Be proactive. Educate yourself. Go online and research autism and its related disabilities. Look up learning disabilities. Talk to professionals. (I do offer this caveat: Beware of false diagnoses…even doctors are wrong sometimes.) When it comes to our kids, they’re never too young or too old to get help. Remember, kids are people, too. We all have times when our interest in what is going on lags, whether we’re in a meeting, watching a performance, having a conversation, or writing an artic—ooh, a bird just flew by the window! Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Curating an Artful Home The Secret is in the Mix
By Robyn V. Powell
When the great George Bernard Shaw remarked, “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself,” he probably wasn’t speaking in terms of home design…but the principle still applies. Your home tells your story, and a home, like a story, is at its best when it grabs us and takes us somewhere interesting. When thoughtfully curated and beautifully displayed, artwork is not just about filling frames but about expressing character and aesthetics. Styling a space with art allows your personality to shine through your home. Begin by asking yourself what art you love and what you like to have around you every day. Think about the pieces you currently have. Think about what new pieces you could add to your space to complement or contrast with existing pieces as well as the other items in your home. Once you have this information, you have a checklist for what you’re looking for when searching for art. Consider consulting an interior designer to help you select just the right artwork to accent your home. Visit galleries and attend events featuring local and emerging artists. Experts say the best advice for choosing pieces wisely is to follow your instincts. It only feels right if you can see something of yourself in it, if it resonates with you in a personal way. Buy pieces you love and that are meaningful to you, not
just items to fill a void on a wall. Art is like wine. It doesn’t really matter how much it cost, so long as you like it. Whether your style is traditional, contemporary, or an eclectic mix, there are many factors to consider when displaying art. From lighting to placement, from sizing to custom framing, the results can make or break a room. An interior designer with an artistic eye can show you how best to display the artwork you’ve collected. Select frames that honor the work without stealing the show, such as simple black or white frames. A consistent look avoids distraction from the art itself. Neutral mats let the art shine by not competing with it. Light-sensitive artwork such as watercolors or pencil drawings fade faster than you think, so invest in UV glass made to protect such items. Proper lighting can also improve or diminish the presentation of artwork. Large-scale paintings require wider ›››

floodlights, while smaller paintings and sculptures need only a spotlight. Lighting retailers can offer informed guidance on fixtures that highlight your art while remaining unobtrusive, focusing all the attention on the art. Sculptures, ceramics, and pottery can be displayed on tables, on shelving with books, or on a pedestal that blends with the surroundings and doesn’t compete with the piece. It’s also important to maintain a proper sense of scale. A work of art has to look like it belongs where it hangs. If it’s too small for the space, the art will be diminished in stature; if it is too large, the observer’s eye will not focus properly on it. If you have a large blank space, sometimes it’s better to go with a collection of smaller works rather than one large piece. Create a beautiful representation of your personality with a gallery wall. A collage of different styles, price points, and time periods has a “collected over time” look and tells a story—your story. Finding a common thread, whether it be a consistent color within each piece or similar style of frames, will create a sense of cohesion among otherwise differing pieces. This may sound mundane, but the number one mistake people make is hanging the artwork too high. The rule of thumb is to hang the artwork so the center is 57 inches from the floor (eye level for a person of average height). Pay homage to your family history by integrating heirloom artifacts into your collection. Framing stores and local galleries that specialize in framing use archival materials and spacers to preserve and protect family photos, cherished family letters, or vintage lace. They often make custom boxes that protect the items inside from heat and UV exposure. Create a custom display box to safely showcase wedding flowers, family recipes, and jewelry. Display boxes are designed to last a lifetime, allowing you to enjoy your heirlooms for years and then pass them along to the next generation. When it comes to artwork, buy what you like, and buy to keep. Let your art collection chronicle your life story. Carefully selected and properly displayed art gives your home a sophisticated feel. Most importantly, it will be something you truly enjoy every time you walk into the room. Isn’t that, after all, the purpose of art? Buck’s Shoes An Old Friend, Back Again By Kate Beiting
If you grew up in Omaha, you most likely bought your shoes at Buck’s Shoes. Once a midwestern chain, the sole store for years has been the one in Fremont, located in the historic downtown district at 550 North Main. The owners of Buck’s Shoes, Kirk and Mollie Brown, have recently opened a second location—across from Oak View Mall, in Omaha. Why Omaha, why now? “We felt there was a strong market for us here,” says Kirk. “Omaha is a large city with a lack of independent shoe retailers.” With recent closings of national discount shoe stores, you may have noticed the same thing. Buck’s Shoes offers fashionable, reasonably-priced, high-quality products, sold by knowledgeable folks who understand your needs and will be there if there is an issue. “We decided the time was right to re-enter the Omaha market,” says Kirk. “Many of our customers at the Fremont store were from Omaha. We believe there is a market for our service and our style. Our shoe reps were encouraging and supportive, as well.” The store is sleek and modern, with large windows and natural light. Displays are vast, organized, and inviting. There is ample seating, comfortable furniture, and knowledgeable staff. “We will listen to your needs and get you into a fashionable shoe that feels great,” Kirk shares. “If you see an item but need a different size or color, we are happy to special order that item for you.” Check out the Buck$ Off bargain room in the back corner for some deep discounts. Kirk has been around shoes all of his life. “I started working in my dad’s store when I was 12—stocking, sweeping, whatever needed to be done.” Kirk’s father, F. Douglas Brown, bought the Fremont store in 1964, and Kirk became the owner in 1986. “We are fortunate they are still here,” says longtime customer Jean Anderson of Fremont. “I have shopped at Buck’s Shoes for many years. They are friendly and have cute things…the jewelry is a bonus.” The Browns know how important the business has been to Fremont, and they hope to establish that same presence in Omaha at the Oak View store. “We enjoy helping each customer, knowing that she will appreciate our merchandise and our attention,” says Kirk. Buck’s Shoes carries a large selection of name-brand shoes for men and women, including Florsheim, SAS, OluKai, Walking Cradles, UGG, New Balance, Naot, Naturalizer, Keen, Merrell, Aetrex, Jambu, Keds, and Dansko. I overheard two women in the store who were giddy at the many choices of the popular SAS brand shoes on display. “I love this brand,” one of them raved. “I’m a nurse, and these are my favorite shoes!” These aren’t your grandmother’s SAS shoes, Kirk tells me. They are

sleek, modern, and fashionable. “The daughters of the SAS founder are now heading the business,” Kirk notes, “and styles are improving.” Usually, the SAS brand is only available in a stand-alone SAS store. “SAS has allowed us to really have a store within a store—it’s a new concept, and we are very pleased.” If you have feet that are hard to fit, take heart! Customers who have trouble finding shoes that fit are always welcome at Buck’s Shoes. “We specialize in hardto-fit sizes, like narrow or extra wide,” Kirk continues. “We understand that these customers are frustrated because they have shopped and can’t find a shoe that fits them properly. Contemporary Flooring Trends How Do Your Floors Measure Up?
By Anne Yankus
One of the largest and most overlooked sections of your house is the floor, and nothing can spruce up a room or give it new life better than new flooring. From carpeting, hardwood floors, polished concrete, tile, or a mix of everything, changing up your floors can be a great way to give a room (or your whole house) a new look. While carpet has been the gold standard in residential flooring for many years, tile and wood have been growing in popularity. Some options off the beaten path are unusual or imported woods like bamboo, cork, or reclaimed wood, the latter of which is wood that has been repurposed from older buildings. There’s also large-format tile, which is less busy than intricate mosaics and has less grout to clean. Some other options are concrete floors or luxury vinyl, which can give you the look of wood, tile, or concrete without the cost or extra maintenance. The classic look of wood grows more popular all the time, and for good reason. However, with so many types of wood flooring out there, it can be difficult to know where to begin. The first choice is between unfinished and factory-finished wood. Unfinished wood has the finish and stain applied on-site at your home, which can be helpful with matching the coloring. Factory-finished arrives ready to install, which can save time. You must also choose between solid wood, which is cut from a solid piece of naturally-formed wood, and engineered wood, which can be made from multiple woods or wood composites. From there, you’re

free to choose from the many popular styles available on the market, such as bamboo, cork, or the more traditional American hardwood. If you aren’t interested in the extra maintenance and care that wood flooring requires, consider tile. As I mentioned earlier, largeformat tile is recently popular, but a little digging on Pinterest or your favorite idea-board website will reveal a lot of creative and unique patterns using smaller tiles, as well. Tile works especially well in bathrooms and kitchens, as it’s resistant to moisture and easy to clean. Simple geometric patterns in light or neutral colors bring a subtle, modern look to any room. An alternative to tile or wood is concrete. ›››

Concrete gained its current popularity in older buildings with subfloors and can bring a cool industrial or modern feel to your home. To make your concrete floor truly house-worthy, you’ll want to look into something a little more sleek than basic trowel or broom finishes, which are commonly found outdoors in sidewalks and driveways. For a more decorative look, stamped concrete is a nice choice, with inlaid designs that are placed on the concrete while it cures. The most popular finish for concrete floors is polished. A polished finish can be done on newly-laid concrete or even on an older concrete floor, to give it a smooth shine. Combining a polished concrete finish with pigment of satin finish is another popular choice. The only downside to concrete flooring is its lack of comfort. If you choose to have concrete flooring in an area of your house that sees a lot of foot traffic, you may want to add an area rug for extra padding. Many concrete finishes require heavy machinery to get the desired effect, so this is definitely a project for the professionals. If you’re not sold on hard flooring, carpet is still a fine choice. However, as anyone who’s had carpet can attest, it can be a pain to keep clean. Regular vacuuming is, of course, the easiest and most obvious method of soil prevention, but sometimes it’s just not enough. Giving your carpet an annual deep-cleaning is also recommended. For specific stains, immediate blotting and cleaning (with club soda or your product of choice) is the best course of action, but nothing can replace having a professional carpet cleaning on an annual or semi-annual basis. Large area rugs over hard flooring can give you the best of both worlds. These rugs can be professionally cleaned in the same manner as wall-to-wall carpeting. It’s always best to consult a professional before arbitrarily installing new floors in your home. Some floors work better in certain areas of the house, and you’ll want to take into consideration how much moisture or foot traffic you get in each area. Other things to consider are pets and children and the wear they may create on the floor. When in doubt, talk to your flooring installer about what types of flooring will work best in your home. Food Allergies Versus Food Intolerance What’s the Difference, and Why Does It Matter?
By Kylie Gumpert
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 5 percent of children and 4 percent of adults in the United States have food allergies. But what are food allergies, anyway? How are they different from food intolerance? Here’s one example: If a person with a lactose intolerance eats dairy products, she may experience significant gastrointestinal symptoms, like cramping, gas, and diarrhea. Although these symptoms can be highly uncomfortable and inconvenient, they are time-limited and hardly life-threatening. She might even be able to take pills that help her body digest dairy without any issues. A person with a lactose allergy, however, could have allergic reactions to dairy—everything from an itchy rash or hives to swelling and complete closure of her airway. The discrepancy in these reactions comes down to the different systems in the body that are responding to triggers. With a food allergy, the body’s immune system thinks that proteins in certain foods are attacking the body, so the immune system fights back. This results in harmful symptoms that may be mild, such as an itchy mouth or hives, or serious, like swelling of the face and throat that makes it difficult or impossible to breathe. Some people with severe food allergies will experience anaphylaxis when they come into contact with the food (in some cases, they don’t even have to ingest it). This is the most

serious allergic reaction; it impacts the entire body, affecting heart rate, causing blood pressure to drop, and significantly impairing breathing. People with food allergies this severe may be instructed by a physician to carry a shot of epinephrine that can be administered in case of a reaction. Food intolerance, on the other hand, is a matter of the digestive system. It means that your body can’t break down a certain food properly. It causes varying levels of gastrointestinal discomfort, but these reactions are not caused by the immune system. A person with a food intolerance can sometimes eat small amounts of the offending food without experiencing symptoms. With celiac disease, which is sometimes referred to as a gluten allergy, the immune system is involved to some extent, but anaphylaxis will not occur. Most of the symptoms of celiac disease are results of the digestive system. Because of this, it is technically a food intolerance, although wheat allergy does exist. According to the CDC, only eight foods cause about 90 percent of food allergy reactions: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, and crustacean shellfish. Reactions may vary significantly—

and not just from one person to another but also from one instance of eating a particular food to another. If you suspect that you have a food allergy or food intolerance, don’t try to diagnose it yourself. Symptoms of food allergies, food intolerances, or even food poisoning can be difficult to decipher, so it’s important to rely on a physician’s expert opinion and laboratory testing. Begin by visiting your primary care provider or an allergy specialist. Skin-prick tests, blood tests, or oral food challenges are traditional ways to diagnose a food allergy. For a skinprick test, an allergist will place a small amount of liquid containing different allergens on your back or arm and then prick your skin in that location. If a bump or rash appears, it’s likely you are allergic to that particular allergen. Blood tests look for elevated levels of food-specific antibodies. An oral food challenge involves eating small but increasing amounts of a trigger food until an allergic reaction is observed. Currently, food allergies are generally diagnosed after symptoms occur—that is, you don’t go to the doctor to get tested until after you’ve had some trouble. Newer predictive tests are still experimental, but one out of Stanford may be able to predict food allergies in newborns as well as older people. Accurate prediction of food allergies may well protect or save lives. Another promising test has identified disabled genes in the white blood cells of people with food allergies. After testing confirms a food allergy, the ultimate solution is for that person to avoid those foods altogether. This is, of course, easier said than done. A registered dietician can help you figure out how to read nutrition labels accurately, avoid certain foods, and stay safe. Newly developed patches and oral solutions (which have not been approved by the FDA) have been shown to decrease someone’s sensitivity over time by gradually increasing the levels of contact with an allergen. If you are experiencing uncomfortable or alarming symptoms that seem to be related to the food you eat, you may have a food intolerance or a food allergy. An allergist can make a reliable diagnosis and educate you on the next steps to take. An Inside Look
Caring Senior Service and Home Cleaning The Comforts of Home, With the Help You Need
By Jackie Byers
Caring Senior Service and Home Cleaning share both office space and a firm commitment to making their clients’ needs their top priority. The two businesses work together to help clients care for and stay in their homes, in safety and comfort. The spacious joint office, in Miracle Hills Office Park, easily accommodates the staff and, often, their children… hence, the array of toys and books with the younger set in mind. “This is a family-friendly place,” explains the owner, June Mourgis. “We are in the business of helping families solve problems. Family is important to everyone, including our employees. When staff members come in for training sessions, to report client progress, or to pick up a paycheck, they often bring their children. We make good use of our antique popcorn wagon or have other treats on hand. We know the importance of family for our clients and for each other.” Caring Senior Service stresses strong personal relationships between clients and caregivers. As June notes, “Our caregivers are carefully screened. We do thorough nationwide background checks, an essential hiring practice. Training is an ongoing process so our employees have and maintain the skills they need to meet our clients’ needs.” Companionship is an important part of the service at Caring Senior Service, June says. One of the ways that Caring Senior Service ensures client satisfaction is the attention paid to a good match between client and caregiver. “We have some quiet types, some good conversationalists, some methodical types,” June shares. “Really, our caregivers have a wide range of personalities, each with the right set of skills. Our supervisors determine the best personality match for client and caregiver.” “Excellent client care is our goal, and we know any good relationship works both ways,” June adds. “If the client has a pet, the caregiver will be good with animals. Our caregivers can even do a load of laundry or put a meal in the Crock-Pot before they leave.” No matter what type of professional the client wants, caregivers have a full set of capabilities. Each caregiver provides medication reminders, respite care, personal care, and light housekeeping. Caregivers can also provide transportation, run errands, and accompany clients on medical visits. They can pick up prescriptions or shop for groceries—whatever the client needs. Being able to stay in one’s own home brings a sense of well-being that is enhanced by having the services one needs provided by a friend. To handle urgent situations, Caring Senior Service has a monitored 24-hour phone number. The other business at 1045 North 115th Street is Home Cleaning. Despite the name, the company actually

offers both home and office cleaning. “Our cleaners use only OSHA-approved products,” June shares. “They bring their own vacuums. Owner June Mourgis (sitting left) You can arrange a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly with her staff appointment for your residence. We can make it sparkle!” Home Cleaning managers also work with realtors, home renovators, and apartment complex managers. “Rental property managers find our reliable cleaners essential when properties are vacated,” June says. “We can have the apartments or homes quickly ready to show to best advantage. The newly placed tenants then may also use our reasonably-priced service to make their home life less stressful.” Home Cleaning sometimes gets a request to clean a home in which a client has died. According to OSHA rules, only companies certified in dealing with biohazards can clean a residence after someone has died there. Such firms have the full body suits, breathing apparatus, and equipment required by law. Home Cleaning is not certified to clean such homes, but they can point clients in the right direction. “We at Home Cleaning pay close attention to those rules,” June notes. “If a client’s family needs help from an OSHA-approved firm, we can suggest names of companies in Omaha who are properly equipped and certified to do such cleaning.” June is proud of all of her employees, especially her management teams. “At Caring Senior Service, Shirley Tingley is the Administrative Director, and Lisa Ettleman is the Agency Director. The Care Managers are Kristy Peterson and Shantel Davis. They are committed to providing the best possible client service. On the Home Cleaning side, Shirley Tingley again works as Administrative Director. Our Operations Manager is Jill Bersane. Our Administrative Assistant, Kathleen Andersen, proves her capabilities in many ways daily.” Both Caring Senior Service and Home Cleaning have support from successful national firms. In Omaha, the two businesses share the facility but have different phone numbers. Caring Senior Service can be reached at 402682-7236. Home Cleaning’s number is 402-933-4959. Shirley Tingley’s number is 402-707-4237. To reach June Mourgis, send a message to junemourgis@gmail.com. WE

Picking Winners From a List of Losers Get to Know Your Investment Menu
By George Morgan
A 401(k) account is an investment account, not a savings account. It is the responsibility of the plan participant (that’s you) to make the investment choices. Unfortunately, the vast majority of plan participants are handicapped by having to choose from a menu of mutual funds that will provide them with subpar investment returns. The plan investment menu is the responsibility of the plan sponsor (that’s your employer), who hires a financial advisor or insurance agent to make the menu choices. In order to have a fighting chance at investing success, plan participants (and all novice investors) need to be able to select a low-cost index fund. Every week, however, I see dozens of plan menus that contain only actively managed mutual funds with high maintenance fees. Maintenance fees for managed funds run in the range of 0.85 percent to 2.25 percent, while the same fees for index funds run as low as 0.02 percent. The fact that the average actively managed mutual fund underperforms index funds by 1 percent is well-documented. Jack Vogel, the “father” of index funds, points out that “if a plan had total fees of 2 percent and the market had a 7 percent annual rate of return, over time, the investor would lose two thirds of the investment return to fees.” Why do financial advisors and insurance agents make these choices? The answer is twofold: training and incentive.

For many years, the “best” brokers at the brokerage firm where I worked for 30 years were a former elementary school principal and an engineer who loved to bet on horse races. They had no formal training in economics or finance. They started their financial careers by taking a class on selling. To the financial services industry, a broker’s success has nothing to do with the investment return he provides to his clients and everything to do with how much revenue he produces for his firm. Few brokers have any idea how a market index works; they are told by their firm to offer the funds that pay the highest fees. Another place where plan participants and novice investors are handicapped in the investment selection is in the vast number of funds made available to them. Most of the plans I have examined offer over 100—some, over 200—mutual funds from which the plan participant must choose. Every once in a while, I run across a menu of 10 or 12 funds. Less is best. Why? When novice investors are faced with a seemingly endless list of funds to choose from, many
www.womensedition.com
respond by picking a little bit of this and a little bit of that. As a result, they end up holding dozens of funds that they know nothing about and that each represent only a small portion of the total portfolio. I often see accounts with a $50,000 balance that is spread across 25, 30, or 40 funds. A fund that represents 2 percent of the total portfolio and has a 10 percent capital gain will impact the portfolio by only 0.02 percent. If a fund that represents 50 percent of the total portfolio has the same 10 percent gain, it will increase the value of the account by 5 percent. Plan participants often make another mistake because they have been told all their lives not to put all their eggs in one basket. They try to “diversify” without knowing what that means. Most of the time, their selection criteria is past performance. Unfortunately, past performance does not indicate future results. A better solution for this situation would be to have the financial advisor or insurance agent include an S&P 500 index fund in the investment menu. An S&P 500 index fund is not a single investment. The owner of such an index fund owns each of the 500 stocks in the S&P 500. These are the biggest companies in the United States— names like Google, Amazon, GE, and Boeing. These are companies that have been growing for a century and will be around for another century. They represent 85 percent of the total value of the American stock market. An S&P 500 index fund is ideal for the novice investor because all she has to do is set up her 401(k) account to automatically buy it whenever money is added to the account. The bottom line: If you have a 401(k) account, you should take a small amount of time out of your busy day to learn how index funds work and find out how much you’re currently paying in fees. It won’t take much of your time, but it will probably make you a significant amount of money. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. To determine which investments may be appropriate for you, consult your financial advisor prior to investing. WE

Making a Final Statement It’s Your Funeral! By Linda Barnes
There’s only one way to ensure that your final send-off is uniquely yours and not a cookie-cutter affair—plan it yourself! You may prefer a traditional service or something out of the ordinary, but how will your loved ones know what you want unless you do some thoughtful pre-planning? A personalized service allows survivors to grieve, remember the good times, reconnect with family and friends, or observe religious customs. It is also a time to honor the person who has departed. Planning your own funeral is one of the kindest things you can do for your loved ones. It eases their burden at a very difficult time. Pre-planning also allows you to make some of the crucial decisions. First, what type of service do you want? A traditional funeral with visitation or viewing and a formal service at your house of worship or a funeral chapel is often the preferred choice. Direct burial shortly after death, with a memorial service at graveside or at another location later may be an option. An additional alternative is direct cremation that occurs shortly after death, with ashes placed in an urn, buried, or scattered. A funeral home can be an invaluable resource during this process. They know federal, state, and local laws that may apply and will supply you with all the necessary information. You may choose to pay in advance, if you wish.
To avoid saddling your family with a large funeral bill, you can choose to fund your own funeral. One popular route is to prepay directly through the funeral home you have chosen. “Pre-need” is the term often used when planning and prepaying. There are pros and cons to prepaying. With inflation, prices are likely to rise if you wait to pay. On the other hand, if additional competition comes into the area, prices might decline. State laws regulate how prepayment for funeral goods and services is handled. These protections vary from state to state. You’ll want to know what happens if the funeral home closes, if you move to a different location, if you die outside of the designated geographic area, or if you want to cancel at some point. A reputable service provider will give you a written statement or contract before you prepay. Be sure you understand exactly what is covered and have the answers to the questions above. If you choose to designate the goods and services you wish but not pay for them in advance, you can still take steps to ensure that funds will be available at the time of your death.
PUT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY’S MIND AT EASE Making funeral plans in advance relieves stress for your family.

This could be through a trust, insurance, CDs, savings accounts, or another financial instrument designated for this purpose. Make sure your loved ones and your attorney have copies of your plan. Keep an additional copy handy at home. A bank box is generally not a good place to store funeral plans because banks are closed on weekends and holidays, when it might be necessary to finalize arrangements. After the mundane details are worked out, the fun part might be planning the actual service. The trend has been moving in the direction of less formal gatherings with individual touches that reflect a person’s interests, hobbies, or career. Video slide shows are a nice touch, either preceding a formal service or afterwards, at a reception. One’s preferences in music, a favorite sports team, or a family tradition might spawn a theme. A cousin of mine, long active in volunteer fire and rescue, had an impressive escort of fire trucks and rescue squads to the cemetery, complete with sirens. A quilting friend had many of her beautiful quilts displayed in the sanctuary of the church for her service. One memorable service I attended featured a brass band leading the recession with “When the Saints Go Marching In,” New Orleans–style. A pro football fan, I’m told, asked that they lay out green carpet with yard lines marked in white and the casket set in the end zone! A superheroes fan had pallbearers dressed as Batman, Robin, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Spider-Man. With the increasing popularity of cremation, many people designate a place where they would like their ashes scattered. My brother wanted his ashes scattered at the family farm, near the little creek where he had fished as a kid. We placed a marker on a nearby tree to memorialize the spot. Once you’ve planned your service or celebration, writing your own obituary is a great idea. Include not only historical data that would be of interest to future generations but also your interests, hobbies, and occupations. What a great opportunity to express yourself! Though pre-planning your funeral may seem challenging (or morbid), it is such a gift to your loved ones. It is also a comfort to know that your family will know what you wanted for this important event. Sources for this article included: www.consumer. ftc.gov, www.nfda.org, and www.aarp.org. WE

When the Cloud Won’t Lift Counseling for Grief and Abuse
By Julianne Dunn, RN, BSN, JD
Grief and loss are part of the common human experience. Whether you are a CEO who has lost a high-powered career or a retiree who has lost a part-time job, a teenager who has lost a first love or an adult who has lost a partner of decades, a domestic violence victim or abused child who has lost a sense of safety—there is no avoiding the grief that comes with loss. Resolution of grief follows an individual path. Some people are able to move through grief relatively smoothly, accepting their losses and moving on. Others find themselves caught in a web of sadness, anger, regret, or depression, from which they feel unable to escape. Symptoms of grief can include intense sadness, preoccupation with the deceased or with the circumstances surrounding the death, longing or yearning, feelings of emptiness or meaninglessness, difficulty engaging in happy memories, lack of desire in pursuing personal plans, bitterness, or anger. Other common symptoms of grief are irritability, loss of joy, weight loss or gain, loss of interest in activities, inability to focus, and constant thoughts of sadness. The symptoms of grief are natural and normal after a loss. However, when symptoms are prolonged without improvement, last for more than a year, or interfere with the person’s ability to return to routine activities, complicated or unresolved grief may be present. When this happens, it may be necessary to seek professional help. Victims of abuse can demonstrate all the symptoms of grief,
as they, too, have suffered a loss. Children may experience school performance issues and problems with peers. Adults often have trouble with relationships and productivity in their work. Disrupted sleep, fear of being alone, panic attacks, eating disorders, compulsive behaviors, and other symptoms of anxiety can plague some victims of abuse. Adults may have difficulty establishing and maintaining intimate relationships. Selfdestructive behaviors such as alcohol or drug abuse, burning or cutting, or neglect of personal health and hygiene may also be present in both adults and children who have been abused. Again, when these symptoms are frequent and prolonged, it may be appropriate to seek professional help. Sometimes, the affected individual will seek help for herself. Sometimes, help needs to be initiated through the intervention of friends or family members—or even the court system, if symptoms result in trouble with the law. Many forms of therapy can help treat unresolved grief. Traditional individual, family, or group talk therapy is often a good place to start. Hypnotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and lesser-known techniques such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), horse-

assisted therapy, journaling, meditation, and art are all possibilities. Medication is often combined with therapy. While many different types of therapists can offer talk therapy or behavior modification, only a physician or an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) can prescribe medication. Often, an MD or APRN will work closely with a mental health therapist to provide assistance to the patient. This has the benefit of teamwork and reduced costs. Costs for some mental health care services are covered by some insurance policies. However, many policies do not include mental health benefits, which means that costs must be covered by the patient. This can be a financial challenge for many families. It is wise to discuss costs up front so that there are no unpleasant surprises. Choosing the right therapist is very important. For a child, the pediatrician or school counselor can usually make a reliable recommendation. The parent should always interview the therapist to determine whether she may be compatible with the child’s needs and the family’s needs. (More often than not, successful therapy for a child must include the family.) Adults can get reliable referrals from physicians or from friends or acquaintances who have had a successful experience. Again, an interview is necessary in order to determine if the patient and the therapist are compatible. This compatibility must include not only personal empathy but choice of treatment modality. Group therapy may be a cost-saving option. It is substantially cheaper than oneon-one psychotherapy, but it may be just as effective, according to Gary Burlingame, PhD, a professor of psychology at Brigham Young University. Amy Paturel writes in an article published by the American Psychological Association that group therapy exceeds APA standards for efficacy for major depressive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic disorder, binge-eating disorder, and several other disorders associated with complicated grief and abuse. In cases of abuse or trauma, groups provide social support, improve social networks, and can reduce stigma, isolation, and feelings of alienation among members, she writes. Life is out there, waiting for you! Wherever you decide to start your journey back to your life, the most important thing to remember is that the time to start is now. Know What You’re Riding On Improve Comfort and Safety with the Right Tires By Julie Kuntze
Honestly, buying new tires for my car is about as exciting as purchasing a new water heater or air conditioner. Though there are so many other fun things to spend money on, these necessities add to the safety and comfort of our environment—and their life spans can be lengthened with proper care and maintenance. Tires are perhaps the most critical item on the list: If you wait to maintain or replace your tires, the results could be catastrophic. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that tires are “one of your car’s most important features in avoiding a crash.” They note that nine percent of crashes involved some sort of tire problem prior to the accident, such as “tread separations, blowouts, bald tires, and under-inflation.” Conversely, tires that are in good condition have better traction, improved responsiveness, and shorter stopping distances—all the things you want when you have to make a sudden move. Tires may seem low-tech, but significant advancements have been made to improve quality over the last several years. New innovations in materials have led to improved traction and fuel efficiency across the board. Many different types of tires are available today, making it important to consider both your driving habits and the environment where you typically drive. All-season tires

provide a comfortable ride while maintaining traction in moderate weather. They usually have a longer tread life than other options, but they do not handle or grip as precisely. Performance (and ultra-performance) tires are sometimes referred to as “sticky” for their amped-up road grip and handling abilities, but they do not do as well in snow and ice, and they usually have a lower tread life than all-season tires. All-terrain tires are good for vehicles that regularly travel off-road as well as on paved roads. Winter or snow tires do their best work in icy, wet weather, improving handling and stopping distances, but they have a faster tread wear and should only be used for their intended season. Good maintenance will help extend the life of your tires as well as let you know when it is time to replace them. Most manufacturers recommend that your tires be rotated every five to seven thousand miles, which helps your tires wear evenly. Sometimes, drivers ask to have their tires balanced when they are already in for the rotation, but this is not always necessary.
www.womensedition.com
Tires typically have small weights that can come off during a substantial impact (with a curb or pothole), but unless you can feel your vehicle shake or shudder while driving, regular balancing is not required. How often you need to replace your tires will depend on several factors, like vehicle type, tire type, driving habits, and environmental conditions. Very broadly, according to ConsumerReports.com, “expect to replace tires a few times or more throughout the life of a typical vehicle.” Over time, of course, rubber will deteriorate, even if the tires have not been driven. You can determine the age of your tires (or of tires you are considering purchasing) by finding the Department of Transportation code labeled on the tire. It begins with “DOT,” and the last four digits indicate the week and year of manufacture: for example, tires labeled “2715” were made the 27th week of 2015. Tires should be replaced when the tread depth drops below 2/32 of an inch. Many newer tires come with wear indicators, which are small bumps inside the tire tread. When enough material has worn away that these bumps are flush with the outer surface of the tire, it is time to change the tires. Alternately, you can put a penny in the tread, with Lincoln’s

head facing into the tire. If any part of the top of his head is visible, the tread depth is too low. It is also a good idea to visually inspect your tires on a regular basis. Exposed steel or fabric, or bulges in the tire, may indicate a serious problem and should be examined by a professional as soon as possible. As with any major purchase, quality matters when choosing tires, but understanding what constitutes quality can be unclear. The Uniform Tire Quality Grade (UTQG) is a program created by the government to help manufacturers grade their tires according to performance by temperature, traction, and tread wear. While still a U.S. requirement, the program has remained unchanged for decades (while tires have continued to dramatically evolve), and scoring is not a precise measurement. Today, longer tread wear is generally the best indicator for longer tire life and, therefore, fewer tire replacements. An investment in good tires may not be all that exciting, but you can consider yourself repaid every time you drive. The Good Life
Hair Loss Surgical and Non-Surgical Treatments
By Ashley Anderson
Hair—we always seem to have either too much of it or not enough. If some part of your body has more hair than you’d like, you can use one of many techniques to remove it, disguise it, or cover it up. But when you start losing hair, especially on your head, it’s a different story. Some men shave their head entirely, which can be a good look, though it’s not usually a woman’s first choice for her own head. Although hair loss is fairly common, that doesn’t make it any easier to accept. Our hair is a large part of our appearance. We spend hundreds of dollars each year on shampoos, conditioners, gels, sprays, and other styling products, not to mention haircuts and styling appointments. When hair loss starts to be apparent, it can be a big blow to a person’s self-esteem. If you are feeling self-conscious about hair loss, it’s time to turn to a professional. The best place to start addressing concerns about hair loss is with your stylist. She can help you figure out if your hair products or styling regimen are damaging your hair. The next step is a discussion with your physician. She may be able to help identify a medical cause for hair loss and may even find out that something more serious is going on with your body. It’s important to discuss what type of hair loss you are experiencing, including the location of the hair loss or thinning and how quickly it set on. It may also be helpful to share any lifestyle changes that coincided with the onset of hair loss. Hair loss can have a number of different causes. According to the American Association of Dermatology, the most common cause of hair loss in women is female pattern hair loss (FPHL). This occurs when the hair follicles at the top of the scalp begin to diminish, causing hair to thin out or fall out. FPHL can be hereditary, and its onset may well coincide with hormonal changes. Any type of physical stress can impact your hair growth—whether you were sick with the flu, injured in a car accident, or even just stressed out at work. Chronic illnesses like thyroid disease, diabetes, or anemia are just a few of the illnesses that can cause sudden hair loss. A poor diet can also cause hair loss. Lastly, the hormonal changes brought on by pregnancy or menopause often affect hair production. So, what’s the cure? A hairpiece can be an immediate, non-surgical solution. For extensive hair loss, a full wig might be the best option. If your hair loss is patchier, you might prefer a partial hairpiece that clips to your remaining hair and can give you coverage just where you need it. Wig retailers are a great source of information. Some even include full-service salons, where you can have your wig washed, colored, and styled by specialists who are accustomed to working with hairpieces. Topical products or supplements can help to

stimulate new hair growth and thicken existing hair, without surgery. It’s best to set up a consultation with a local medical professional who specializes in hair loss treatment. They can evaluate your hair loss and recommend the best option. Surgical options are also available to treat hair loss and thinning. Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure that uses the hair you already have to fill an emptier area. Typically, a section of hair-bearing skin is removed from the back of the scalp and is grafted to another area. This is done in small pieces until the bald spot is filled. Within a few weeks of the surgery, the transplanted hair should fall out. Don’t be alarmed—new hair should start to grow within a few months. Most people have noticeable improvement of hair growth within six months. This cosmetic procedure is not typically covered by insurance and may cost several thousand dollars. As with most surgeries, you are likely to experience some pain or discomfort, as well as up to a week of downtime before you can return to your regular activities. For men and women in the earlier stages of hair loss, a newer treatment known as laser hair therapy has been clinically demonstrated as beneficial. This treatment uses low-level laser energy to stimulate the hair follicles and get them back into the growth phase. This can help existing hair appear fuller and can stop hair loss and generate new growth. This technology is now being used in hair restoration clinics and medical offices. You don’t have to accept having too much body hair, so why should you accept having too little hair on your head? If you’re tired of feeling self-conscious about your hair, it’s time to consult with a professional about which of these methods would suit you best. Switzerland The First of Several Trips
By Jackie Williams
Have you ever been on a vacation where you loved everything about it and would jump at the opportunity to move there? That’s how I felt after my first trip to Switzerland. The landscapes, the culture, the food—I loved it all! Let me tell you about this trip and what I’m planning for my next visit. En route to Basel for a Viking River Cruise up the Rhine, my husband and I first arrived in Zurich, where we took a scenic train ride to Lucerne. A friend of ours from Switzerland highly recommended Lucerne for our first destination, confident that we would love it. He was absolutely right! Everyone takes public transportation there; it’s reliable, easy, and affordable. There are automated machines to purchase bus and train tickets with cash or credit, with a map of the routes available for your reference. Have SBB Mobile downloaded to your smartphone before you go, and you can check current timetables and prices to make things even easier. Properties right on the lake are pricey but have gorgeous views. We chose to stay at an apartment that was a 10-minute bus ride away from the lake but had beautiful views of the mountains nearby. The next day, we returned to Lake Lucerne for a day trip called the Golden Tour. I highly recommend it. Stop by the
grocery store and stock up on picnic fare to take with you while you enjoy the sites. The Golden Tour takes you by boat across the lake, up the world’s steepest rack railway from Alpnachstad to Pilatus, and back to Lucerne via gondola lift, aerial cable car, and bus ride. The best all-around experience for one price, one ticket. Leave early in the day and take your time exploring the different areas, taking a hike, riding a toboggan, and enjoying the panoramic views of the surrounding Alps and lakes below. I recommend going in the reverse order of what is typical for the tour, as there are fewer people on that route. Your walk up to the gondola takes you past little local shops where you can see the famous alpenhorns being made. Your ride up the mountainside will bring a smile to your face and a camera to your eye when you see the perfectly groomed grassy fields (you would think they were golf courses!) and grazing cows, complete with cowbells. be seen on the trails, hiking or riding bikes. Your next stop brings you to more trailheads and the toboggan ride that you shouldn’t miss! By the time you get to Pilatus, you will be ready to break open your picnic lunch and enjoy the sunshine and stunning views. The steep ride down is fun, too, especially when the cows or goats are right next to the railway. The last part of the Golden Tour (or first, if you prefer) is the peaceful ferry ride across the lake back to where you started. After a full day of exploring, you will be ready to eat a hearty and authentic Swiss meal. In search of raclette or fondue, of course, we were able to get into Stadtkeller for dinner. At first, I thought it would be pretty cheesy (no pun intended), but it turned out to be a fabulous dinner and show! Complete with huge steins of local beer, yodeling, and folk instruments, the night was full of laughs, singing, and giggles. It was a terrific way to end a great day. The next morning, we toured the area around the lake, including the famous and picturesque Chapel Bridge and Water Tower. We stocked up on Swiss Army knives and chocolate. Did I mention that the grocery stores in Lucerne have entire aisles devoted to chocolate bars?!? Prepare to bring a suitcase back for souvenirs! The Alps are Europe’s greatest mountain range, and Switzerland contains the most spectacular part of it—that’s what the country is famous for. It creates a diversity in landscapes and makes the country a four-seasons destination. Yes, it is expensive, but I felt the money spent was worth the unforgettable experiences. My next trip, which is already booked, will take us out of Zurich during the winter for some snow sports in the Alps, which includes riding down Europe’s longest toboggan run and getting shots of the Matterhorn. I would love to go again after that, to hike to waterfalls and camp on a lake…just enjoy the nature. It seems like Switzerland is just about perfect. Go and see for yourself! Enterprising Ideas
Building Your Dream Home The Right Team Makes Building as Easy as Dreaming Building your dream home is one of the most exciting things you’ll ever do. It’s also one of the most complicated, expensive, and time-consuming tasks you’ll ever undertake. To turn your dream into a reality, choosing the right builder is essential. While a knowledgeable team of experienced professionals is key, so is finding a team committed to understanding your desires and dedicated to creating a home that aligns with your vision. The team at Curt Hofer & Associates in Omaha has been helping people design and build their dream homes for over 20 years. As a full-service team and build firm, Curt Hofer & Associates handles the entire project. Many firms refer to outside architects, but the design at Curt Hofer & Associates is all done in-house, offering home buyers a seamless process. President Steve Huber explains, “An in-house team means we’re all in it together, from design through construction. With our offices all under the same roof, communication can be handled quickly and efficiently.” At the heart of Curt Hofer & Associates is a commitment to excellence and attention to detail, as well as the belief in the importance of long-term relationships with each client. “Throughout the journey to home creation, we act as guide, therapist, advocate, and counselor,” says Steve. “It’s a learning process for a lot of people. The point when clients begin to actually see their home start to come out of the ground is always exciting. That moment, when we bring a client’s dream into reality, is a lot of fun—for them and for us.” Planning your custom home from foundation to rooftop requires making many decisions. For Marshall Wallman, Vice President of Design, design is an art form. Grandson of a cabinetmaker and son of a framing carpenter, Marshall spent his childhood around building sites. The experience sparked a lifelong passion for all kinds of residential design. Marshall draws up concepts the old-fashioned way—on paper. “People can expect a home that is truly their own,” says Marshall. “I listen very carefully to try and create a home that reflects the clients’ personalities, tastes, and desires, within a price point that they decide upon. Creating a home is more than just a certain number of bedrooms and bathrooms. We try to create that home for people that really is unique to them.” Sites like Houzz and Pinterest are terrific tools for inspiration and ideas, Marshall notes, but they can be overwhelming. “We are here to help clients find their way through the weeds, narrow down the choices, and understand the costs,” Marshall explains. “Sometimes,
66

it means working through differing tastes and wish lists and merging different styles. We do our very best to accommodate people’s wish lists at a price that’s within their budget. At the same time, we never compromise on quality, so it can take some research at our end to make it happen.” Steve explains the importance of working closely with clients to give them a realistic estimate of what it will cost to build the house they want. Cost/projections are calculated up front, during the design and planning phase. “People who work with us can expect us to be good stewards of their money,” says Steve. “We work hard to build trust so clients will keep coming back to us and look to us for any future modifications or renovations.” After a home is built, Steve notes, Curt Hofer & Associates is there for their clients’ maintenance needs, with a full-time service manager available to clients at all times. “Our ongoing Home Service and Warranty Program ensures your home stands the test of time. What better company to maintain your home than the one that built it?” Steve and Marshall agree that some of the greatest rewards come from seeing a project from start to finish and seeing people’s joy when they move in. “If you’re dedicated to getting a home that is truly your own, Curt Hofer has the right team,” says one happy client. “We’ve built quite a few homes, and it is by far the best building experience we’ve ever been through. If we were to build another home and Curt Hofer could not do it, we would not build.” From designing to building, the Curt Hofer & Associates team is with their clients every step of the journey. “We do our very best to make their dreams come true,” Steve concludes. “When the home functions well for clients and they love it, we’ve done our job.” Curt Hofer & Associates is located at 16820 Frances Street, Suite 102, in Omaha. To get in touch with the team, call 402-758-0440. You can find a lot more information about their process and check out some amazing photos online at CurtHofer.com. WE

The Green Thumb
The Season of Summer-Fall Changes on the Way By Sharon Knierim
The name “August” does not sufficiently describe what is going on during this eighth month of the calendar. We know it is still summertime, and yet…subtle changes are taking place in the garden. “Summer-fall” might be a better name for this month; at least, it evokes the confusion some of us feel. Even some of our garden’s inhabitants have changed! August mornings show off the magic of cobwebs on grass that has become fully drenched overnight. It’s as if fairies have spun these glistening webs to sparkle in the early morning sunshine. Even garden veggies and florals are often embraced with these delicate silver and white laces. Some August mornings give us a hint that summer may be stealing away quietly into early autumn. On occasion, there is a slight nip in the air that is neither summer nor autumn. Of course, if you enjoy the sweltering heat, there is still plenty of opportunity to “sweat it out” before this warmest of seasons ends for us. Does this nearly untraceable change in the air and surroundings mean that our gardening chores are nearly finished for the season? No, no, my exhausted green-thumbed friends. We have much still to do. Although plants possess a mysterious talent for recognizing that days are shorter and there are fewer hours of light, they
continue to grow and bloom and require our care just as in earlier months of warm weather. For this gardener, there is a premature sense of accomplishment in August. Already, it feels like I have had a successful year of growing and producing. While gardening requires a certain amount of mental work and a whole lot of physical labor, there are rewards to this most popular of American hobbies. Whether the garden is formal or informal, who does not enjoy showing off her hard work and the beauty of her garden? There is still much beauty to be had in the garden as summer is deciding whether to leave now or to stay for another six weeks. Honestly, gardening is in full swing now. Some of us have long ago planted everything we can think of, while other gardeners are gearing up for their fall plantings. Don’t forget

to include cool-weather vegetables in empty garden areas! You’ll be glad you did. Many of these cooler temp veggies are crisp and fresh long after the rest of the garden has stopped producing. Begin planning now what will be included in your fall garden. If more gardening chores do not sound comfortable to you at this point, remind yourself that fall gardening is done in cooler weather, with much lower humidity. What is one of August’s most loveable traits? Of course, it is the month for the ripening of many fruits. Cherries and strawberries have already been harvested, but now come to us the wonderful fruits from our orchards. Of all the summer months, August is usually the driest and is the perfect weather for bringing these fruits to their full potential, both in beauty and in nutritional value. We all fall in love with early spring’s blossoming trees, which will give birth to these beautiful fruits, but it is undeniable that hundreds of glistening apples or pears festooning a fruit tree are absolutely a wonderful (and delicious) sight. If we watch closely, there is a very significant difference between August 1 and August 31. Each day moves us closer to autumn, each night arrives a little earlier than the last…and a highly sensitive gardener can easily recognize these variations. The signs are certainly there for us. On the practical side, if you simply cannot abide the lack of blooming plants in the summer-fall garden environment, consider adding drifts of mums to the garden. These beautiful fall-blooming plants can be plugged in among spring and summer bloomers. Pinch them back until at least the Fourth of July to prevent premature blooming. Mums can add an amazingly wonderful blaze of color in the autumn garden! The palette of colors is huge, including hues like white, yellow, pink, purple, and rust. Give them a try. Mums are perennials, and the simple purchase of just a few of these plants will provide many new plants in succeeding years. Welcome to summer-fall! Don’t get tripped up by the summer winding down. Enjoy August this year as it slowly waltzes us into autumn. Editor’s Note: Sharon Knierim has been a Master Gardener since 2003 through Iowa State University. She lives on a small farm in western Iowa and looks forward each month to sharing her passion for gardening with her green-thumbed reader friends. WE

Doggie Dental Care Healthy Mouth, Healthy Pet By Kathy Glow
How long has it been since you’ve taken a good look inside your dog’s mouth? Just like us, dogs need their teeth regularly brushed in order to maintain good oral and overall health. Fortunately, if you start early, doggie dental care can become an easy and routine part of your furry friend’s health. Puppies’ 28 teeth are all in place by eight weeks of age, and they may begin to fall out as early as 12 to 16 weeks. Even though their 42 adult teeth aren’t in until between four and six months, you can still start caring for them by getting your dog used to being handled. Start by purchasing toothpaste specifically made for dogs. (Never use human toothpaste, as fluoride can be poisonous to dogs.) Use a soft cloth wrapped around your finger, a child-sized toothbrush, or a finger toothbrush. Get your puppy used to having his mouth examined first, and then use the brush on his teeth without the toothpaste. He should be ready to tolerate the toothpaste by the time his adult teeth are in. Brushing your dog’s teeth daily is ideal, but even three days a week will make a huge difference in preventing infection and disease. Have your veterinarian show you the correct technique. Both large and small dog breeds can develop oral and periodontal problems. Small dogs with short snouts and cramped jaws tend to have more issues with plaque and tartar buildup. Small dogs may also chip and break tiny teeth if permitted to gnaw on hard toys. Larger breeds also experience plaque and tartar buildup, which leads to gum and periodontal disease. Large dogs experience more traumatic injuries to teeth and gums, such as fractured tooth tips, broken jaws, and worn tooth surfaces. Your dog’s teeth should be checked yearly by a veterinarian for signs of problems or infection. Additionally, check your dog’s teeth and mouth a few times a week at home. The gums should be pink, not red or white, and the teeth should not have any brownish tartar. If you notice other oral symptoms, such as unusually bad breath, broken or loose teeth, excessive drooling, signs of pain or refusal to eat, bleeding or swelling in the mouth, tumors or sores, or unusual irritability, it’s time to call the vet. Periodontal disease is the most common dental condition in dogs. By the time they are three years old, their mouths may be showing signs of the disease. It starts innocently, with plaque that hardens into tartar. It can attack your dog’s gums, causing gingivitis. It can also cause a condition called pyorrhea, an inflammation of the gums and tooth sockets that usually causes loose teeth. It is rare that dogs get cavities, but it can happen. If left untreated, the toxins causing your dog’s periodontal disease can spread via the bloodstream and damage the kidneys, liver, and heart. Your veterinarian will grade your dog’s periodontal

disease on a scale of one to four and recommend treatment based on this number. She may be able to treat and clean your dog’s teeth herself, or she may refer you to a veterinary dental specialist. A boardcertified veterinary dentist can take x-rays of your dog’s teeth to determine the extent of the damage. These images, as well as thorough treatment of the disease, do require sedation or anesthesia for the safety of your dog and of the technician performing the treatment. While your dog is sedated, the areas below the gumline can be cleaned, preventing the need for follow-up visits. Dental procedures of this kind can cost from $400 to $1,000, depending on the extent of the treatment needed. Veterinary dentists can also remove broken or decayed teeth, drain salivary cysts, and remove oral tumors. It’s estimated that one in four dogs will die of some form of cancer. Malignant oral tumors in dogs can be very aggressive and can spread throughout the body, if untreated. If you observe any swelling, lumps, or unusually colored tissue in your dog’s mouth, have it examined immediately. If diagnosed early, many oral cancers have a relatively good prognosis. In addition to regular mouth checks and brushing at home, you can have your groomer brush your dog’s teeth, as well. However, just don’t rely on this onceevery-eight-weeks brushing. Provide your dog with plenty of chew toys to help scrape away some of the soft plaque and keep the teeth and mouth strong. Ask your veterinarian about specially formulated dog foods and chew treats that slow the formation of plaque and tartar. Finally, avoid feeding your dog table scraps and sugary human food. If you pay attention to your dog’s oral health and treat its mouth with care, your dog’s life span may be increased by several years. An Infinity of Choices Trust Your Instincts “There are two primary choices in life: to accept conditions as they exist, or accept the responsibility for changing them.” —Denis Waitley Isn’t life amazing? Every day, we have choices, and what we choose to do with them is totally up to us. What is even more amazing is how one seemingly small choice can have long-term effects that we never even imagined. So, how are you doing with your choices? “Your life is the sum result of all the choices you make, both consciously and unconsciously. If you can control the process of choosing, you can take control of all aspects of your life. You can find the freedom that comes from being in charge of yourself.” —Robert F. Bennett The great thing about life is that you can always make new choices. Recently, I have been feeling frustrated with the people around me. I was falling into the trap of choosing to allow others to steal my joy. “I discovered I always have choices and sometimes it’s only a choice of attitude.” —Unknown So, I’ve made the choice to change my attitude. thoughts and actions that feel best for me, because all I can really control are my choices, my thoughts, and my actions. “Remember, there are no mistakes, only lessons. Love yourself, trust your choices, and everything is possible.” —Cherie Carter-Scott I think that is one of the biggest lessons we can learn—to trust ourselves and trust our choices. It is very easy to waver and to find fault in our choices, but sometimes we just have to dive in and trust that, at that moment in time, we are making the choice; we are making the best choice for ourselves. We make choices every day, some small and some large. As you move forward in your choices, consider trying to feel your way through them. Ask yourself what feels better. Does choice A feel better than choice B, or should you look for a choice C? “You and I are essentially infinite choice-makers. In every moment of our existence, we are in that field of all possibilities where we have access to an infinity of choices.” —Deepak Chopra Remember, you always have a choice, even if that choice is to do nothing.
