Publisher’s Notes

When a Door Closes… Hello and happy 2019! This New Year has a bittersweet beginning for me. I am sorry to say that I closed my restaurant, Bricks & Mortar Bar and Bistro, at the beginning of December. The reason? Let’s just say the landlord made it impossible to carry on. The good news is that I learned so much over the past several years. I came in contact with a huge variety of people—from customers to staff—that I would never have met if I hadn’t taken this journey. I gained knowledge of an industry that I now respect more than I would ever have imagined. The employees who succeed have a true passion for taking care of their customers. One employee who deserves a very special “thank you” is Manny Chavez, who was my General Manager for four and a half of those years. I told Manny again and again that he took a sow’s ear and turned it into a silk purse. He worked hard—day and night—to make the restaurant a beautiful, smoothly functioning machine. We couldn’t have gotten where we did without him. Thank you, Manny! One of the best things about leaving the bar is that I am returning to Women’s Edition full time. I’ve missed her! My staff has been keeping things running. Roxy Orr, my Operations Manager, has been running the ship and doing a great job. Erin Lanza, my Art and Editorial Director, has been there through it all. (She has even jumped in and started going out to share our story with potential advertisers!) Liz Huett, our Copy Editor, has put up with me missing my own deadlines. Veronica Relford, our Administrative Assistant, has been pitching in wherever she is needed. Thank you! I absolutely couldn’t have done it without you. I know that 2019 is going to be a spectacular year. I am so very excited at the prospect of getting out once again and talking to our customers. I’m also contemplating different ways that I can connect with you, our readers! More to come on that as time goes on. I sincerely hope that you all have a great year ahead of you, as well. One of the great lessons that I learned at my restaurant was about the importance of time. With the New Year ahead, I have made a commitment to make every moment count. Here I go! Want to join me? We’ll talk next month.

Fashion Worthy

Bridal Fashion, Then and Now Love is Always in Style

By Holly Bell

Planning a wedding used to be quite a traditional process. There were rules you had to follow and criteria you had to meet. There was plenty of room for beauty, but not a lot of room for creativity. Over the years, weddings have changed a great deal. Gone are the days when you followed all the same rules that your mother did. Today, you have the freedom to let your wedding reflect your personality. In many cases, an old tradition is still at work, but it’s being celebrated in a different way. In the past, many brides changed into a suit and left on a wedding trip directly after the wedding. Many of today’s brides change into a party dress for the reception. This gives them the opportunity to be more comfortable on the dance floor and to make another fashion statement. Today’s weddings are usually centered around a favorite theme or the tastes of the bride and groom. For example, if your tastes run to modern simplicity, your gown could be a satin sheath with little or no embellishment. Your hair could be a low bun in the back, accessorized with simple pearl earrings. Table decorations and invitations could also reflect your refined tastes. Other couples may have entirely different tastes. One couple I know is doing an outdoorsy country theme. Their engagement photos showed them in a rural setting, wearing plaid shirts. The wedding will be held outside, near a garden, and decorations will have a country vibe. The bride may wear cowboy boots! It is their day to get creative. Bridal fashions this season give lots of opportunity for letting your imagination and creativity run wild. Dresses in seasons past often featured strapless mermaid styles. This style looks amazing in photos but isn’t the most comfortable in practice—brides typically had to wear a corset-type undergarment that (hopefully) kept the top up, and they still had to be conscious of the top slipping down throughout the day. The latest styles have solved this problem with the newest bridal design trend: straps! These provide not only security and comfort but also an opportunity for additional details. Straps come in all sizes and styles, from spaghetti straps to wide lace straps and everything in between. If you choose a style with straps instead of a strapless style, your day will have one less worry and some added comfort. Another style trend in bridal attire, especially for a cooler weather wedding, is sleeves. Sleeves are having a big moment in fashion right now, and that includes wedding dresses. The trumpet sleeve has been a great trend these past seasons and is gorgeous on a wedding dress. Off-the-shoulder gowns also look stunning with flowing sleeves. Lace sleeves provide a very feminine touch. This year’s bridal sleeves are often quite long, landing in the middle of the hand, which adds an elegance to the dress. When you think of a wedding dress, you automatically think of white—but did you know there are over 200

6

shades of white? If you want a white wedding dress, you still have a lot of options to choose from. The bridal shows this year were also filled with the color blush. Brides will be pretty in pink this year! Another favorite this season is nude undertones. Lace with nude-colored lining or nude-colored layers under white offer a fresh look. Wedding decor is also enjoying some fun trends. For example, adding metallic touches brings a bit of sparkle to everything. There’s a rose gold frenzy going on, and it looks great with this year’s pink tones. When it comes to flowers and dessert, less is more this year. Gone are the tall,

Unlimited Yoga, Pilates, and More structured floral arrangements that prohibited dinner conversation—small but lush floral arrangements are the trend. Brides are also putting less emphasis on the wedding cake. Smaller or even pre-cut cakes are in, along with offering more varied dessert options like gourmet donuts or pies. One current trend that may not come to mind for weddings is black. Many dresses this year have a black ribbon accent around the waist. Brides are also opting for some drama and sophistication by adding black into their event design. Black charger plates would add some glamour to the table and go perfectly with the metallic touches that are so on trend. Though wedding and reception traditions have changed, one thing that all brides have had in common across the ages is the desire to look beautiful and memorable. This is probably the biggest party you’ll ever throw, and you want it to be the best. When you’re planning your wedding, feel free to celebrate the traditions you value while staying true to your personal style. Who knows? Maybe you’ll create something new that will become its own tradition! WE More information at www.lisaloucollection.com

Good Fortune & Good Food in the New Year By Kate Beiting

Open House Italian Beef Sandwiches Trim a 3-4–pound boneless rump or chuck roast, cut into 3-inch chunks, and sear briefly, if desired. Place the meat into a slow cooker. Mix together 1/2 cup of water and one envelope of Italian salad dressing mix. Pour over the beef. Add 1 teaspoon of crushed red pepper, several slices of garlic, and half a jar of sliced pepperoncini. Cook on low for 6–8 hours. Remove meat and shred. Return to slow cooker until ready to serve. Serve on rolls with juices on the side. Baked Pancakes Put a stick of butter in a cast iron skillet. Place the skillet in a 475-degree oven for 3–4 minutes until the butter melts. While the butter is melting, mix together 2 eggs, 1/2 cup of milk, and 1/2 cup of flour. Once the butter has melted, pour the batter into the skillet. Bake for 12–15 minutes, until brown and fluffy. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes (or broil for 10 minutes), until bacon is crispy. Mushroom Canapés Unroll 2 packages of refrigerated crescent dinner rolls and press the perforations together to make a rectangle. Mix one 8-ounce package of softened cream cheese with one 4-ounce can of drained mushroom pieces, 2 chopped green onions, and 1 teaspoon of seasoned salt. Spread the mixture over the dough. Roll it up like a jelly roll and slice into 1-inch pieces. Brush the pieces with egg wash. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes. Chili Meatball Stew Brown 24 small meatballs (homemade or frozen) in a 375-degree oven for 25 minutes. Put in a soup pot or slow cooker. Add 2 chopped onions, 2 cloves of minced garlic, 1 diced green pepper, 2 Tablespoons of chili powder, 2 cans of diced tomatoes, 1/2 teaspoon of cumin, 1 can of drained kidney beans, and 1 can of drained cannellini beans. Add other spices, as desired. Cook for 4–5 hours on low in a slow cooker or for 2 hours on low on the stove. Serve with crusty garlic toast or cornbread. Dawn’s Mud Bars Line a 9-inch square pan with greased foil. In a large bowl,

beat 1 stick of soft butter with 3/4 cup of packed brown sugar until creamy. Beat in 1 egg and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. In a smaller bowl, mix 1 cup plus 2 Tablespoons of flour, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Add the flour mixture to the egg mixture. Stir in 2/3 cup of semisweet chocolate chips, 2/3 cup of white chocolate chips, and 1/2 cup of chopped pecans. Spread dough into the prepared pan. Bake at 375 degrees for 23–25 minutes, until center is firm. Sprinkle 1/3 cup of semisweet chips and 1/3 cup of white chocolate chips on top. When the chips are soft, spread evenly. Cool, then cut into bars or triangles. Pumpkin Cheesecake Mix together 1/2 cup of crushed graham crackers, 1/4 cup of crushed gingersnaps, 2 Tablespoons of finely chopped pecans, 1 Tablespoon of flour, 1 Tablespoon of powdered sugar, and 2 Tablespoons of melted butter. Lightly grease the bottom of a 9-inch springform pan. Spread and pat the crumb mixture over the bottom. In a large mixing bowl, mix two 8-ounce packages of softened cream cheese with 1 cup of sugar, until fluffy. Add 3 eggs, beating well. Put 1 cup of the cream cheese mixture into another bowl and add 1 egg, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, 1 can of pumpkin (15 ounces), 1/4 cup of milk, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger, and 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg. Beat until combined. Pour the pumpkin mixture into the springform pan and top with the plain cream cheese mixture. With a knife, gently swirl through the layers to create a marble effect. Bake at 350 degrees for 40–50 minutes, until the center appears set. Cool on rack for 1 hour before loosening the pan. Refrigerate. Garnish with whipped cream and spiced nuts. WE

Say “So Long!” to the Yo-Yo Diet Keep the Weight Off With Rosalie Joy By Elizabeth French

Struggling with weight loss is a common issue that affects people of all ages, genders, and body types. Rosalie Joy of Eustis, Nebraska, has made it her mission to help others reach their weight loss goals. To help her clients get where they want to be, she uses her expertise and coaching skills in conjunction with Suddenly Slim® products. “I’ve always watched my weight, from a very early age,” Rosalie recalls. “I started my first diet when I was 14.” Whatever methods you’ve used to try to lose weight, she has probably tried it, too—Weight Watchers, low-carb diets, stringent calorie-counting, and countless other strategies. In the 1980s, she and her husband decided to begin preventative maintenance and “take care of our bodies in a way that would honor God,” says Rosalie. Desiring a more holistic approach, Rosalie decided to start eating healthier foods and taking supplements rather than medications. After years of fluctuating weight, Rosalie was introduced by a friend to the Suddenly Slim program (manufactured by FirstFitness Nutrition®). Rosalie was initially skeptical, but her doubts were soon erased when she started noticing visible results of her own. Through personal research, she has learned that, in order to fully absorb nutrients from food, the body needs to first be free of toxins and bacteria that can slow metabolism and hamper the digestive system. Suddenly Slim is a shake-based program, but participants also eat real food from day one. They also offer a supplement that curbs cravings by simulating dopamine in the brain. Their meal plan is modeled on the one designed by the American Diabetic Association. Their shakes are perfectly balanced for people with diabetes and are ideal for a quick meal. Suddenly Slim offers three different programs to suit individuals with different dietary needs and weight loss goals. When it comes to restrictive diets, people often reach a point when they decide to go back to what they were previously eating and, ultimately, they end up weighing as much (if not more) than they did when they began. To combat this cycle, Rosalie tailors her coaching to each client. “I work with people on an individual basis,” she explains. “Some people need quite a bit of detoxing, and they go through something like a withdrawal…people who have followed a healthier diet don’t need as much time to detox.” It’s important to avoid going back to old habits after doing a Suddenly Slim program, Rosalie notes. She helps her clients remain intentional and focused on the bigger picture of overall health and wellness,

12

January 2019

avoiding foods that are harmful in the long term. She also guides her clients toward the products that will help them maintain weight loss and curb cravings. Her coaching has been very helpful, reports her client, Gwen. “I have found that my cravings and hunger have been controlled as I follow the food plan, use Body FX Meal Replacement Shakes, and take the appetite suppressant Xanolean Supreme three times daily. If I miss a shake or forget a Xanolean, I find myself on a ‘food hunt!’” Rosalie understands the skepticism people might feel about trying yet another weight loss program; she was initially skeptical, too. What Rosalie brings to the table is her personal success—she doesn’t just sell the Suddenly Slim program; she lives it every day. Having found something that truly worked for her, she wanted to share it with others. “If I could find something that helped me, I knew I could help other people,” she asserts. “When I was able to keep the weight off, it was life-changing.” She enjoys the benefits that FirstFitness Nutrition promises, including greater energy and a more consistent mood. What truly sets Rosalie apart from her peers is her penchant for customer service and her genuine understanding of what her clients are going through. She stresses the importance of meeting people where they are and moving forward from there. She notes that some people come in and out of the program, but she chooses to remain available for them when they need help. By maintaining an open door policy, she can be a consistent source of motivation for those who are fighting to improve their quality of life. As her client, Yvette, says, “Bottom line? This program works! It’s easy; no tracking or counting. The products set you up for success by changing your cravings, and you use them in conjunction with real food. All this, and you get free coaching to tailor this program to your needs.” If you’re ready to lose weight and keep it off, schedule a nutrition consultation today! A Woman’s Work

Would the Real Queen Please Stand Up? Keeping that Crown Polished

By Sharon Knierim

It should be one of my resolutions for the New Year to attempt to be a better long-term hostess to other women. You know who I’m talking about. From time to time, your mother or mother-in-law, sister or aunt, or even a good friend comes to stay for an indefinite period of time. There are at least two problems here. The idea of someone “coming to stay” throws me into a panic. When I think of “come,” I can’t help but think of “go,” as in “go away after a suitable length of time.” Also, “an indefinite period of time” strikes fear in my old and worn-out heart. This literally undefined amount of time could mean anything from a week to a couple of years. It’s indefinite! Hopefully, I am not a stingy or thoughtless person known for the peculiarity of jealously guarding my privacy. After all, the doorbell continues to ring on a regular basis, as does the telephone. Realistically, we don’t get that many requests to share our home, whether it’s from someone who wants to visit and catch up or someone who needs a place to stay because of a job loss that led to a home loss. It’s unhospitable to be freaky about wanting guests to make

reservations to come through my front door. It’s even less hospitable to announce early during the “negotiations” when they will arrive and, more importantly, when I’ll be standing on the front porch, waving good-bye to them. Perhaps I harbor these feelings because I love a simple and quiet life that features doing what I want to do, when I want to do it. Well, we all love that. Like everyone else, I treasure the fellowship of my family and dear friends on a regular basis, but they all seem to have an instinct that their visit will soon be ending. Hopefully, I don’t begin to yawn or thumb through a magazine when company is still here. Something must show, though, because somehow my

lady friends and relatives always know it’s time to pick up their purses and begin looking for their coats. Long-term guests are expected to hold their own at our house. Doing their own laundry is an absolute requirement, helping with the dishes is an obligation, and leaving personal items on the floor or tables is nearly a death sentence. Don’t worry; there’s still hope. As an unlicensed and untrained mental health official, I have found the source of my problem: I am shy. It is true that I never make the first move to make a new friend and am somewhat uncomfortable when friends are too close. Displays of emotion and drama are taboo in my surroundings, which is sad—these moments of emotion can be pretty interesting. On the surface, this sounds truly cold-hearted. According to my amateur diagnosis, however, I might just have a fear of being drawn into problems I do not understand. Probably it’s best to leave this kind of work to the professionals. Over the years, the family and I have somehow declared me Queen of the House. Apparently, I have learned to love the job. That is why I feel threatened when another woman arrives with her luggage (and her not-yet-housetrained puppy) in tow. There can be only one queen in a castle, and I enjoying filling that position. If the new arrival poses no threat and is entertaining, helpful, and interesting, or if we share a long history together, the event can be quite fun. Perhaps learning to “loosen up” would make a big difference. I recently read an article that said not everything has to be perfect in your home before you can welcome houseguests. That seems counterintuitive to me, but it’s something to think about. So it is that, in the year 2019, I will attempt to be kinder to my guests and better enjoy the gift of their friendship. I will give more of myself. I will not be wearing my crown when I open the door for them—I will take out my crown only in my bedroom, at night, when I’m polishing it. Seriously, why deny ourselves the opportunity to learn more about the people who populate our lives and make our lives what they are? It only takes a little bit of caring to start some good feelings. I will be a better hostess in 2019. While I am at it, I think I’ll monitor my own behavior when I am a guest (not the queen) in someone else’s home. Who knows what rules I may be breaking over there? Vantage Point

Cordel Foreign Motors Caring for Cars Since 1961 By Jackie Byers

Cordel Foreign Motors has been thriving as a family-founded, family-owned, and family-operated business for more than half a century! That’s almost six decades of the honesty, integrity, and good service that Omaha’s foreign car owners have come to expect from Cordel. Still, it doesn’t hurt to have a little something to catch a customer’s eye. The first thing you notice when you enter the office is the Volkswagen Beetle that has been halved to frame each side of the door. Beyond that, you’ll enjoy the glass tower that displays a model car collection—a Cordel family heirloom. In the case, silver Porsches, Mercedes, BMWs, and other model cars fill the shelves, giving a hint of the variety and beauty of the life-sized cars so lovingly cared for here. The entry office is small, leaving most of the space in the back, for the cars being serviced. Andrea Cordel Cook is the first family member you will meet at the office. She is responsible for many aspects of the business. She is the answerer of phones, the greeter of customers, the scheduler of appointments, the keeper of accounts, the orderer of parts, the guru of insurance, and the head of human resources. Andrea says Cordel Foreign Motors has changed a lot over the years. “The days of the grease monkey are gone,” she shares. “Auto service now requires a high degree of technical expertise.” Andrea frequently updates the software that is so necessary for servicing foreign autos and installs the information on the shop’s computers for the technicians to use. “So much of a car’s operation is computerized,” she continues. “Our service personnel have to fully understand what the computer tells them. The computer can find problems with light modules, battery adaptation, air bags, and so many other electronic components and accessories.” “The software is continually updating. We stay on top of the changes and new downloads for all the models we service. The team members we have assembled are really experts at their jobs.” Besides Andrea, this team includes her husband, Anthony Cook, and her brother, Karl Cordel, as well as Jeff Soderstrom and Alec Berlin. Both Andrea’s father and grandfather preceded Andrea and Karl in the company. Despite the computerized nature of cars today, Andrea still loves getting into the guts of a vehicle. “I have never been reluctant to get greasy working on a car engine,” she shares. “We all live what we do. I have dabbled in wrenching since I was a child. I can rebuild a car’s engine. I even body-swapped an old Toyota.”

18

The number one priority has always been foreign car service. “My grandfather, Franz, was the original owner. Later my father, Egon, and his brother Edgar took over the business. The business now is solely owned by my father.” In an effort to expand the business several years ago, Egon and Edgar imported 680 European gray market cars. “The business today has returned to primarily service because we have a smaller location,” Andrea comments. However, we have a few perfect vehicles for sale that we have purchased from customers.” We know cars from the inside out.” Foreign cars generate a special love in their owners, Andrea notes, and she strives to build and maintain her customers’ trust. “I know what we are working on, what we have waiting, and how long it will take. I let customers know what each job takes and when we can complete it to their satisfaction. I don’t make promises we can’t keep.” Satisfied clients praise the efficient and friendly service on Cordel’s website (cordelforeignmotors.com). One customer who grew up in Omaha has a great story. “My dad owned an ’85 black Mercedes. I was a teenager in love with all cars and was in awe of that car. When the suspension system malfunctioned, Dad insisted on Cordel service. Now, in 2018, my step-brother still drives that car. The ride is smooth and easy, no matter how he drives.” The European models serviced at Cordel include Audi, BMW, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, MINI Cooper, Porsche, Volkswagen, and Volvo. Visit Cordel online at cordelforeignmotors.com for more information, or call 402-592-2288 to make an appointment. Cordel Foreign Motors is located at 4628 South 88th Street, in Omaha. WE

Fresh Concept

A New You, From the Neck Up Cosmetic Surgery Considerations By Kylie Gumpert

If you’ve ever thought about getting a facial cosmetic surgery procedure, this time of year is perfect for taking the first steps toward the confidence you deserve. With every New Year, we reflect on what we want from our lives. We make resolutions and promises to ourselves that involve living healthier and happier lives. For some of us, that might mean a facial cosmetic surgery that restores our confidence or corrects an abnormality. Though recovery for facial cosmetic surgeries varies somewhat based on the procedure you undergo, there are some steps you can take toward good results that apply to any facial surgery. Regular sun protection, such as sunscreen and good coverage with clothing, as well as maintaining a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and a good diet, can help extend the results of your procedure. There are several different types of procedures for the neck and facial area, including brow lift or forehead lift, rhinoplasty, face lift, ear pinning or reduction, neck lift, and neck fat reduction. The brow lift, or forehead lift, is for someone who wants to raise the eyebrows and reduce wrinkle lines on the forehead and between the eyes. In some cases, the surgeon will make an ear-to-ear incision within the hair. In other cases, it’s best to do several small incisions along the hairline around the top of the patient’s face. For these incisions, the surgeon will use an endoscope, which is a small tube with a camera on the end. The endoscope is inserted under the skin to examine the parts of the underlying muscle that are causing deep wrinkles or sagging of the patient’s forehead and brows. These tissues can then be surgically removed. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, most patients can expect to resume regular activities, including going back to work, within about two weeks. It will take several months for all swelling to go down and for the area to heal completely. Rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping, is for people looking to enhance the balance of the face by altering the shape, size, or positioning of the nose, or to correct deformities that cause breathing issues. This surgery involves a surgeon making incisions either within the nose or along the tissue that separates the nostrils. There may also be incisions along the natural curve of the nostrils to adjust their size or position. Depending on what the patient desires, the surgeon might shave down bone or remove cartilage. Cartilage from other parts of the body may be needed to reconstruct parts of the nose. In the first few days after surgery, a splint or gauze will be used to help support the new structure of the nose. Full healing will occur in around a year. The initial, noticeable swelling will diminish in the first few weeks, but swelling is likely to occur most mornings throughout that year. A full face lift is for someone who is looking to lift

and tighten loose skin around the face and chin and to smooth folds along the side of the nose and mouth. During this procedure, the surgeon will make an incision on the hairline that starts at the temples and runs around the bottom of the ear and along the lower scalp. The surgeon will redistribute fat and adjust underlying facial tissue or muscle to achieve the desired look. Excess skin is then trimmed, and the incision line is sutured. Many times, a full face lift will include a neck lift, an eyebrow or forehead lift, and an eyelid lift. Patients generally resume work and activities after a couple of weeks. Uncomfortable tightness will go away after two or three months. A neck lift is for someone looking to tighten and smooth sagging skin or muscle and excess fat in the lower face and under the chin. This procedure is similar to a face lift procedure, but the incision starts along the hairline of a patient’s sideburns. Additionally, surgeons will often make an incision under the patient’s chin and then use liposuction to remove excess fat. Following surgery, it’s important to avoid turning or twisting the head at first. Patients should also avoid wearing clothing that pulls over the head. Full healing will take around six months. Neck fat reduction is for patients younger than 55 years who want to minimize a double chin. A surgeon will make a couple of small incisions under the chin or behind the ears and insert the liposuction cannula to collect and remove fatty tissue. After surgery, patients briefly need to wear a chin strap that helps support the neck and maintain its shape, but most patients are ready to resume everyday activities after just two weeks. Ear surgery, sometimes called “ear pinning,” is for someone who wants to correct abnormally large ears or ears that protrude significantly. During the procedure, an incision is usually made on the upper back of the ear. If necessary, the incision may be made in the inner folds of the ear. The surgeon uses permanent sutures to hold

www.womensedition.com

the ear in its new position. The procedure may also remove excess tissue in the inner ear, which commonly develops in patients who have protruding ears. Children as young as five years can undergo this surgery, so long as they are healthy, are able to follow directions for aftercare, and do not communicate that they don’t want to go through with surgery. Visually, the ears will look corrected almost immediately, but full healing will take around a year. It is very important to be careful about bumping the ears or subjecting them to sunlight—children must be made to understand the importance of this. Bandages must be left on to maintain the ear’s new shape; the surgeon will decide when bandages should be removed. The most important parts of deciding whether facial surgery is right for you are researching the procedures beforehand and finding a surgeon you can trust who has the experience you need. There are some important questions you should always ask a potential surgeon before electing for a surgery. Regarding the surgery, you’ll need to know whether you’re a good candidate for the procedure you desire, what the risks are, how long your recovery is likely to take, what type of results you can expect, and how surgical complications are handled. You also need to make sure your surgeon has relevant experience with the surgery you are undergoing and the track record to prove it, including before and after photos and patient testimonials. Like artists, surgeons have their own styles. Even with appropriate experience, a particular surgeon may not be a good fit for you if the surgeon’s vision just doesn’t match yours. Any licensed physician can legally perform cosmetic procedures, but you want to choose a qualified, board-certified surgeon to perform a surgical procedure. You should also ask if the surgeon’s

office or facility is accredited, which is important for your overall health during surgery. Look for certification from these bodies: American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF), Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), or the Joint Commission (JCAHO). Psychologically, cosmetic surgery can help increase confidence and self-esteem for patients who have dealt with years of feeling uncomfortable in their own skin. However, unhealthy or unrealistic motivations for surgery might create the opposite effect. Surgeons are trained to screen patients and help them understand what they can and should expect. Less invasive methods like filler injections, laser or light therapy, or topical creams can garner subtle cosmetic results. They are often tempting because they’re much less expensive than surgery, and they may be the right choice for some patients. It’s important to keep in mind, however, that some features cannot be altered without a surgical procedure. Being completely honest with your surgeon is the key to managing expectations and is more likely to lead to good results. When it comes to insurance, elective cosmetic surgeries are generally not covered. Surgeries that come with physical health benefits, however, may be covered. This could include things like lifting eyelids that are sagging into the field of vision or correcting nasal malformation that impairs breathing. Be sure to check with your insurance provider. If you’ve been considering cosmetic surgery options but haven’t moved forward, take advantage of the new energy that comes with the New Year. Start your research and set up some consultations with surgeons in your area today! Camelot Cleaners An Omaha Dry Cleaning Tradition By Loretta McCollum

In every industry, the businesses that stand the test of time generally have several traits in common. The most valuable of these are topnotch customer service, taking care of their employees, and adapting to industry trends. Camelot Cleaners is a textbook example of what it takes to be a successful company. In business since 1984, this family-owned and familyoperated company does it right. President and co-owner Craig Courtney proudly explains that his family has been in the dry cleaning business since the 1950s. Craig’s brother, Chris, is a co-owner and vice-president, and their 85-year-old father still has a hand in the business, coming in at least once a week. Over the years, they have expanded to five locations in the Omaha area, two of which house their dry cleaning plants, and they employ more than 50 people. When asked about the origin of the name Camelot, Craig explains, “When most people think of Camelot, they think of something that represents the ideal, or the pinnacle of quality, and that’s what we strive for. We provide exceptional customer service, along with

We aren’t looking to be the biggest in town, but we strive to be the best.” He proudly points out that many of Camelot’s customers have been with them since day one, and he asserts that the most important aspect of their business is customer loyalty. What gimmicks do they use to keep their customers coming back? None. “If you take care of your customers and are the best at caring for their clothing, then the other things take care of themselves,” he says. Craig attributes a good portion of their success to low staff turnover. Camelot has several employees who have been with the company for 15 years or

Healthy Living

Facial Surgery Institute Better Health Above the Neck By Cynthia Jeffrey

What do healthy living and facial surgery have in common? More than you might think. We often think of dentistry and plastic surgery as two entirely different categories of health care. Lucky for Omaha-area residents, Bruce Kuhn, MD, DDS, has had the fortitude to bring these professions together and create the Facial Surgery Institute. From a young age, Dr. Kuhn knew he wanted to work in the field of dentistry. He pursued this dream until he had the opportunity to assist in a maxillofacial surgery. He describes that experience as an epiphany—from that moment on, he knew he could do more for people and made it his mission to do so. Dr. Kuhn wants to help people help themselves. It is this philosophy that creates such a rich environment for success. He works every day to make his patients’ lives better, and he is passionate about putting a light back into people’s lives. If Dr. Kuhn is unable to assist a prospective patient, he refers the patient elsewhere—positive outcomes and satisfaction are his ultimate goals, even if the patient must find solutions with another surgeon. At the Facial Surgery Institute, Dr. Kuhn and his

team move more than just the soft tissue of the face. They surgically move the facial bones, allowing for total reconstruction. This requires an intense skill level, and Dr. Kuhn’s 30 years of practice make him one of the most sought-after surgeons in the Midwest. Some of the many procedures offered at the Facial Surgery Institute other than jaw correction, include dental implants, bone grafting, wisdom tooth removal, facial trauma repair, and facial plastic surgery. With a staff of nine people, the ability to provide in-house surgical procedures, and access to several hospitals, the team at the Facial Surgery Institute provides full surgical intervention to each one of their

Fitness Can Be Fun Get Fit and Fab in 2019

By Loretta McCollum

Hello, January! Every year, we anticipate your arrival. You bring us fresh starts, second chances, and new opportunities to reinvent and redeem ourselves. Conversely, you have the ability to underscore the adverse results of recent over-indulgences and painfully remind us of last January’s failed resolve to get it together and achieve our fitness goals. Take heart, my post-holiday food coma friends. Fitness has never been more fun! So sit back, relax, put on some pants with an elastic waist, and pay attention. We’re going to talk about the benefits of being physically fit, along with some of the fun options available to help you reach your goals. Keeping in shape is important at any age. Being fit improves overall health and decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer, among other things. Those who exercise regularly have more energy, sleep better, and are less likely to suffer from depression. In older adults, exercise helps lower blood pressure, boost the immune system, and maintain bone health. Where do you start? With so many choices, there’s a workout plan for everyone. From Pilates to plyometrics, from boxing to ballet barre, you’re sure to find something you’ll enjoy. Besides, you can always mix things up a little bit. It’s best to avoid sticking with one form of exercise for an extended period of time, and not just because you might get bored and lose motivation. After continued repetition, your body develops muscle memory, decreasing the effectiveness of your fitness routine.

Rowing, cycling, and kickboxing are tried-and-true, high-intensity workout methods. Rowing is a great full-body workout that uses approximately 85 percent of the body’s muscles. It also has the benefit of being both high intensity and low impact. Cycling is a great cardiovascular workout that burns fat and builds muscle. Cycling classes typically include upbeat music to get you going. Kickboxing combines boxing with karate moves and is a good cross-training workout. Rowing and cycling are both forms of resistance training, meaning that muscles contract against an external source of resistance. Other examples include free weights, medicine balls, and weight machines. Resistance training provides multiple benefits, including increased strength and flexibility as well as maintenance of bone mass and bone density. It also helps lower blood pressure and body fat percentage. Looking for something more calming and meditative? Pilates ›››

or yoga may be the answer. Yoga has been around for centuries and is practiced in many forms. It’s known for increasing strength and decreasing stress. Hatha yoga includes most types of yoga that combine breath work and various poses. Bikram yoga (also known as “hot yoga”) is practiced in a warm, humid space. Yin is a restorative type of yoga, focusing on increasing flexibility and circulation by holding poses for longer periods of time. Ashtanga is a more physically demanding type of yoga in which poses are done in a certain order, producing a purifying sweat to rid the body of toxins. Pilates is somewhat similar to yoga, but where yoga focuses on flexibility, Pilates emphasizes muscle relaxation and core strength. Check with a local gym or studio for more information on all forms of yoga and Pilates. Group classes are a fun way to get in shape. Feel like de-stressing by hitting something? Join a pound class and get your cardio and plyometric workout using lightly weighted drumsticks called Ripstix. Want a little friendly competition? Team-based workouts help you get in shape using camaraderie and a sense of accomplishment. Jazz it up with a groove class, a dance workout with music and simple moves. Want to make some waves? Ropes classes involve creating wave-like patterns with ropes. These great low-impact cardio workouts use most of the major muscle groups. How about something more sensual? Pole workouts increase flexibility and tone, while building strength. Barre training uses a ballet barre, and it’s a mix of Pilates, dance, and yoga that incorporates aerobics and cardio training, usually choreographed to music. Now that you’ve decided to get fit and fab, where should you go? Selecting a gym is a personal decision. Like fitness regimens, there’s something for everyone. Some fitness centers offer kids’ clubs, massages, saunas and whirlpools, juice bars, and nutrition consultants. Some focus on offering a variety of equipment and the ability to work out in multiple locations, while others strive to be non-intimidating. Most fitness centers offer the expertise of a personal trainer, typically for an extra fee. A personal trainer has gone through fitness certification training and can provide fitness assessments, develop personalized fitness and nutrition plans, and work closely with you to help you achieve your fitness goals. What are you waiting for? It’s January! Get off the couch, and get to the gym! Sources for this article included: wellbridge. com, ncsf.org, pennyhoarder.com, webmd.com, and lifespan.org. WE

Something to Fall in Love With Manifest Your Creation Wow-once again, we have a whole new year in front of us. There is something refreshing, revitalizing, hopeful, about this time of year. All of those challenges we have been facing seem a little less daunting, a little less intimidating. It’s as if we have the chance to be reborn!

By Janet Van deWalle

“Forget the resolutions, Forget control and discipline… too much work. Instead, try experimenting. Go in search of something to fall in love with…something about yourself, your career, your spouse.” —Dale Dauten

“Effective people are not problem-minded; they’re opportunity-minded. They feed opportunities and starve problems.” —Stephen Covey

I choose to deliberately focus on, deliberately create, makes decision about what I’m going to “fall in love with” I find that my energy increases, my concentration improves, and my joy explodes! So how does a person maintain this enthusiasm? The key is to utilize your imagination and visualization abilities. Make a decision to take the time and pretend that what it is that you are seeking is already a reality. Make it a point to get to the “feeling place” of what it will be like when you have manifested your creation. After reaching this place, get out of bed and begin each day with this affirmation:

Traditionally, the New Year brings with it resolutions. When I was growing up, I was taught that at the New Year, I needed to take a look at where I was and decide what I wanted to get rid of. I would attempt to make those changes through sheer willpower. Well, like most of you, my willpower would last 30 to 45 daystops! It was frustrating. After years of going through this drama, I decided to make a new decision: I no longer would make New Year’s resolutions—instead, I would take this approach:

“Today, no matter where I’m going, no matter what I am doing, and no matter who I’m doing it with—it is my dominant intent to look for that which I’m wanting to see. I’m wanting to find thoughts and words and actions that feel good while I’m finding them. For in doing so, I am, in the moment, practicing the art of allowing all that I’ve been telling the Universe I’m wanting, for all of the days of my existence.” —Abraham/Hicks

“Today is the first day of the rest of your life.” —Charles Dederich Intellectually, I know that January 1st is just another date on the calendar, yet I find myself excited by the opportunities!

Thank-You Cards Have You Sent Yours Yet? The holidays are nearly over. The decorations are being stored. Returns have been made (hopefully, there weren’t many). Now comes the hard part…thanking all the gift-givers and favordoers. The subject of thank-you notes came up at a recent wineand-gab session, and the complaints aren’t just about the holidays. Mary had company stay for several days. “I felt like I was their hotel maid,” she moaned. Mary didn’t mind so much that her guests didn’t strip the beds before they left. What she did mind was them asking if they could add some of their stuff to her laundry load. “I wish my washer and dryer had been on the fritz,” she commented wistfully. “Mable could have gone to the laundromat with me. At least we’d have had some girl time together.” Connie commented that she’d have said, “I’m not planning on doing a load right now, but I’ll show you how to work the machine.” Mary smiled and continued, “It was just the feeling that they didn’t appreciate our hospitality. There wasn’t even a ‘thank you’ when they left.” As of this conversation, which took place several weeks after the visit, Mary hadn’t received a thank-you note or even a text message remarking on what a good time they’d had. Others in the group were more concerned with kids and grandkids who hadn’t thanked them for gifts. We all agreed that we don’t give gifts to be thanked, but it would be nice to hear they’re appreciated once in a while…or at least that they’d arrived at all. I told them I’d sent my grandson a text asking if he’d received his

Christmas card…I was concerned about money sent through the mail going missing. “Yeah, Grandma, I did,” he texted back, adding, “thanks for printing your note…I could read it without Mom’s help.” One year, I gave everyone a package of blank cards to use for thank-you notes or short messages. I got a few back. One came with an apology for taking so long to write. “I didn’t have any stamps and forgot to get some when I went to the store,” she wrote. Next time, I’ll include a few stamps. Any method of thanking others is good. I know writing a thank-you note can be difficult. The elderly sometimes have arthritis in their hands and have difficulty holding a pen. My aunt took care of that disability by using her typewriter. It was an old portable she’d set up on a small table with a supply of paper and envelopes (and stamps) nearby. She even addressed the envelope on the typewriter. Others have sent emails and attached photos of them using their gift or showing what they bought with the money received. Whether it’s a short note to say “thanks,” a long narrative, a generic pre-printed card, or a phone call, acknowledgment is always appreciated. Has your family shown their thanks yet? Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Spotlight on Lighting Design Trends in Style and Functionality

By Robyn V. Powell

Lighting is one of the most important elements of interior design. It can change the perceived size of a room, add functionality, and even alter your mood! When integrated with other design elements such as fabric, furnishings, paint, and wallpaper, lighting is the masterstroke that brings a space to life. If lighting is overlooked in the design process, even an architecturally beautiful space with stunning design elements can fall flat. Because lighting design is both a science and an art, selecting the right type and proper placement of lighting is challenging. That said, planning lighting for your home doesn’t have to be an overwhelming task. Familiarize yourself with lighting fundamentals and take your space from nice to extraordinary! To strike the right balance of visual appeal and functionality, a well-lit space combines a variety of lights. Lighting generally consists of three categories: ambient, accent, and task. A good lighting plan consolidates all three into a space. One way to think about lighting is in terms of layering, in much the same way you build an outfit. Ambient lighting is your foundation and includes recessed ceiling or flush-mounted fixtures that blanket a space with a layer of even light. Once you’ve chosen your base layer, you’re ready to add accent lighting to achieve ambience. Accent lighting is like jewelry. It adds drama and beauty by adding visual detail. Depending on the room, your choice of accent light will differ. For example, you

can create an inviting nook in a family room with a table or floor lamp. Bring a fun, playful atmosphere to a child’s bedroom with colorful lampshades or bulbs. Add drama and beauty to your dining room with a chandelier or sconces. Your final layer is task lighting. Just like a pair of hard-working shoes, task lighting is functional and has a specific purpose, like a desk lamp or a closet light. Today’s multi-function kitchens typically have a combination of all three types of lighting—recessed lighting overhead, pendants above the island, and under-cabinet task lighting. When it comes to the latest lighting trends, bigger is better! Homeowners everywhere are falling in love with oversized fixtures. Large pendants and bold chandeliers that act as statement pieces are getting lots of attention. Soft gold is trending as a popular finish, beautifully complementing the current design palettes ›››

of greige and soft gray. Soft gold blends well with contemporary, farmhouse, and modern urban decor. Layering light with different sizes of table and floor lamps, all with soft fabric shades that diffuse light, is a popular choice for mood-enhancing accent lighting. Whether a light fixture is the focal point or an accent detail, a dimmer switch is a great feature. Dimmer switches allow you to lower lighting to create different moods, with the added benefit of reducing energy use and costs. Smart lighting also offers more precise control over lighting, and it’s one of the most desirable features of a smart home. Smart lighting allows you to save energy, helping both your wallet and the environment. Options include touch panels and screens, remote control, motion sensors that detect movement in and out of a room, and systems that can be controlled directly from your smartphone or tablet. For example, the Alexa app allows you to set up single verbal command groups that control multiple lights and plugs. With the ease of a single command, you can set the mood for your entire house, whether you’re arriving home, getting set to watch a movie, or switching everything off at bedtime. LED lights have come a long way, with an impressive life span of 20 years. Though more expensive to purchase up front, LEDs are very cost-effective over time. Initially, many consumers didn’t like the cooler, bluish light that LEDs emit compared to the familiar warmth of incandescent lights. This issue has been resolved by the new generation of warm white LED lights between 2700–3500K (the lower the number, the warmer the color). Lighting stores are well versed in LED technology and can provide a great resource to guide you in choosing the right LED lighting for your needs. The shorter days make winter the ideal time to update your home’s lighting. Consider working with a lighting professional or interior designer who has the expertise to help you design just the right lighting for your home. The added value they bring can make or break the success of your project. Compare portfolios and choose someone who suits your personal style and listens carefully to what you’ll need from your lighting at different times of the day and night. Whether you’re building or renovating, the best lighting design is the one that works best in your home! Sources for this article included: consumerreports.com, greenamerica.org, and asid.org. WE

Right on Track

Still Dreaming of Weight Loss? Make Your Resolution a Reality By Leslie Byrne

It’s New Year’s resolution time! Most likely, weight loss is on your mind…most likely, it was on your mind last January, too. How can you make 2019 your year to lose weight and keep it off? It’s all about finding the right support. Millions of us are already trying! In 2017, the American weight loss market was estimated to be worth more than $68 billion. With so many people supporting the industry, you’re not alone in your quest to lose weight and get healthier. How do you know what program is right for you? You need to begin with a good understanding of where you are, health-wise, and your doctor’s office is a great place to start. We’ve all read the disclaimer about seeing your doctor before starting a weight loss program, and that’s great advice. You want to make sure you have no underlying health issues that need to be addressed or that are causing your weight gain. It is good to know your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels, weight, and height before you start any weight loss plan. Now, let’s go over a few popular weight loss plans. ChiroThin involves dietary supplements that promote and increase metabolism. There is some detoxification in the program, and it involves eating anti-inflammatory foods with a low glycemic index (that is, slowly digested carbohydrates that don’t raise blood glucose levels). The program is doctor-supervised in weekly meetings. It is a sixweek program, followed by a transition to a more normal diet that is still anti-inflammatory and low glycemic. Weight Watchers is probably the best-known program worldwide. It does not sell food or supplements. Instead, it focuses on teaching people how to make smart choices when they eat regular foods. They use a daily point system to help members choose healthy foods. You can do the program online or with in-person group meetings (or a combination of the two). Many people find the weekly weigh-ins and group support very helpful. NutriSystem is another widely known program. It has members eat small meals six times a day. The majority of the food is purchased through NutriSystem; the rest can be purchased at the grocery store. They offer a great deal of online support and the convenience of having pre-made food delivered to your door. Profile by Sanford was developed at Sanford Health, which has locations worldwide. It offers oneon-one coaching, personal plans, and a special scale that you use to weigh food at home (and your coach can see the data). Members buy some food from Profile and some at the grocery store. The focus is on personalized nutrition, activity, and lifestyle coaching. FirstFitness Nutrition focuses on supplements and

40

January 2019

diet shakes. It offers online support and direction and features online challenges to encourage members. Metabolic Research Center focuses on foods that increase metabolism and on educating their members on healthy eating. Members purchase vitamins and supplements. This program focuses on hormone imbalance as a reason that some people struggle to lose weight. Other programs that focus on hormone imbalance may include supplements and a detoxification period that is followed by a low glycemic diet. What all these programs have in common is support. Partnership increases your chances of losing weight and keeping it off. For a more personal experience, consider hiring a weight loss coach. A coach individualizes your diet and exercise program and is there to help you overcome struggles that have thrown you off course in the past. This relationship can really keep you from giving up! If you’ve tried and failed to make permanent changes in the past, a few months of working with a weight loss coach may be right for you. Nutritionists teach clients about nutrition and about the health aspects of food. If you have medical conditions that must always be monitored, your doctor may suggest that working with a nutritionist would be a healthy option for you. People who are morbidly obese or have serious medical conditions may benefit from medically supervised weight loss. This broad term covers anything from changing a person’s diet and exercise routine to weight loss surgery. A medical doctor and the patient will determine the best option. It may involve behavior modification, prepackaged meal replacement, surgical weight loss, or medications that can help you lose weight. If losing weight has been your New Year’s resolution for years, make 2019 the year you finally find what works for you. Keep in mind that it took you a while to gain the weight, so it will take a while to lose it, too. Be patient. Rely on your support system. With support and dedication, this can be your year! Home Works

Building a Home Gym Where Exercise Meets Privacy By Anne Yankus

It’s that time of year again—time to find a way to work off all that delicious turkey and dessert from the holidays. One of the best ways to do this, of course, is to hit the gym. Many of us just buy a gym membership and get going, but have you ever considered the benefits you might reap from having a gym in your own home? The first downside of joining a commercial gym is that everyone else is doing the same thing right now. You may run into heavy crowds whenever you visit and might not get to even use the machines you want to use. Having a home gym will allow you access to whatever machines you choose to buy, at whatever time is most convenient to you. While building a home gym costs more up front than joining a gym, you can more than make your money back with what you’ll save in gas money and membership fees over time. Short bursts of activity in the form of 30-minute workouts are also trending, which is great news for your schedule, especially if you don’t have to add a 30-minute commute to the gym and find a babysitter every time you want to work out. With all the high points of owning a home gym to convince you, you’re sure to start thinking about how to convert a space

and what equipment you want to pick up. Now, unless you’re planning on building your home gym in a closet (this isn’t recommended; home gyms are best with lots of access to natural light), you’re probably going to buy more than one machine. Before considering anything, the first piece of advice we can give you is to buy local. It may be tempting to buy a cheaper machine online, but keep in mind that that machine probably won’t come with much customer support. Buying locally will ensure you have someone in the vicinity you can turn to when you need to replace a part or have issues with the equipment’s functionality. Cycling and rowing machines are popular choices because you can get a high-intensity, low-impact workout. Other great things to look into are power cages or power towers, free weights, ellipticals, and, of course, the classic treadmill. Power cages and power towers are bulky, but they’re great for multiple ›››

reasons. Power cages have the benefit of accommodating all your major bar weight exercises, including bench press, barbell squats, and dead lifts. Power towers are more compact than power cages and are even more versatile, giving you a place to do pull-ups, chin-ups, dips, and the opportunity to exercise literally any muscle that you can flex while you’re in a hanging position. Free weights can be a bulky set of items to store, but they don’t have to be. Snag yourself a set of adjustable dumbbells or kettlebells, and you can have multiple weights in one. An elliptical machine is a great way to work out multiple muscles while being able to catch up on your TV shows or audiobooks. Treadmills are, of course, an excellent way to warm up, cool down, or get a cardio workout in. Rowers aren’t just for strengthening your arms— with something as compact as an air rower, you can get a great machine for warming up or strengthening your back, shoulders, and arms. Cycles are a great way to balance out your workout and never miss leg day. Naturally, you’ll want some additional equipment to keep you entertained and focused during your workout. No home gym is complete without a nice TV and cable or streaming box. If you find workout motivation in music, perhaps a nice Bluetooth speaker is more your style. There are also tons of smart devices to keep your fitness on track, many of which will sync with an online service where you can see your progress in fancy graphs and charts. Before you buy any equipment, schedule a consultation with a personal trainer. This may seem like an unnecessary expense, but the advice of a professional can be invaluable when formulating your fitness plan, deciding which machines and gym equipment will best help you meet your goals, and making sure that you’re doing each exercise correctly without injuring yourself. If you prefer to exercise in private, building your own home gym that complements your personal fitness plan can be the perfect solution. Get your year off to a healthy start without leaving home. Total Joint Replacement Out With the Old; In With the New

By Karen Zunke Smith

Total joint replacement is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of all or part of a joint that has been damaged by arthritis, overuse, or injury, followed by replacement of the joint with artificial components intended to facilitate normal movement. This treatment option may be considered in cases of joint pain and loss of function that have not improved with less invasive therapies such as rest, physical therapy, medications, or steroid injections. Knee and hip joint replacement account for over 85 percent of the more than one million total joint replacement surgeries performed each year. Shoulders are the next most common type of joint replacement, with over 50,000 of these procedures done annually. Ankle, toe, elbow, wrist, and finger replacements are performed less frequently but can also be an effective treatment for pain and reduced mobility that do not respond well to conventional therapies. Implants used for joint replacement are not “one size fits all.” They come in a variety of sizes and may be made of metal, plastic, ceramic, or a combination of these materials. There is also a genderspecific option for total knee replacements, with the female version designed to better fit the knee joint of an average-sized woman; however, some studies have found no advantage to this option over traditional knee implants. The surgeon will consider a number of factors to determine the most suitable implant for each patient, and

most implants are expected to last a minimum of 15–20 years. The decision to proceed with total joint replacement surgery, and whether a traditional or minimally invasive approach will be used, should be made in collaboration with your primary care provider, all specialists involved in the treatment of any chronic health conditions, and a board-certified orthopedic surgeon. It’s important to fully understand the anticipated benefits from the surgery along with the possible risks. Don’t be afraid to get a second opinion. Once the decision is made to proceed with joint replacement, you should begin preparing for surgery and recovery; ideally, preparation starts weeks or even months in advance of surgery. You’ll need a medical exam to ensure there are no contraindications to anesthesia or surgery. Some routine medications, such as blood thinners, aspirin, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), may need to be discontinued or adjusted prior to surgery. (This should be done in consultation with your physicians and surgeon.) Optimizing your overall health will reduce your risk of

postoperative complications and can improve the recovery process. Some ideas include quitting smoking, drinking less alcohol, eating a healthier diet, getting regular exercise that includes strength training, and reaching or maintaining a healthy weight. Education is also an important aspect of preoperative preparation. Patients should understand the potential benefits and risks of the surgery, as well as the recovery process. While your surgeon is the best source for current and individualized information, other resources include the Arthritis Foundation (arthritis.org) and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (orthoinfo.aaos.org). Physical therapy is always a part of the process of recovering from joint replacement, but the frequency, duration, and actual therapies may vary. Meeting with a physical therapist prior to surgery can be of great benefit. Preoperative strength training can bring you into your best shape heading into surgery. Being familiar with your physical therapist and with the exercises you’ll do during recovery can help reduce anxiety a great deal. Practice with any assistive devices you’ll need (like a walker) will ease your transition into recovery. Your therapist may also have advice about movement precautions and how to prepare your home so it’s safer and easier for you to accomplish your daily tasks during recovery. The hospital stay after joint replacement surgery is an average of one to three days. Most patients can be discharged to home from the hospital, as long as they have some assistance lined up from family or other caregivers. A small percentage of patients may benefit from an inpatient rehabilitation center for a brief period of time between discharge from the hospital and return to the home. While most patients are able to resume normal activities (including driving) within six weeks, it may take 6–12 months to experience the full benefit of your new joint. After this recovery period, the vast majority of patients report significant improvement in their preoperative levels of pain, as well as greater ability to participate in activities they enjoy. The ability to lead a more active lifestyle after total joint replacement surgery can also enhance mental and physical health and overall quality of life. An Inside Look

Four Generations of Roeders Their Family, Helping Yours By Jo Wandel

The philosophy at Roeder Mortuaries is to always to take care of the customer. This has been the guiding mission since 1912, when Theodor J. Roeder founded Roeder Mortuary. Norman and Ronald Roeder carried on the family tradition, and Jon Roeder is the current president. In the future, the next generation will take charge in the form of the founder’s great-grandson, veteran Brian Roeder. For more than a century, the Roeder family has strived to memorialize the deceased and support their grieving loved ones. Over the years, the Roeders have worked tirelessly to meet the wishes of the deceased and their families. They work with people of all faiths and are happy to arrange religious or secular services. Commonly requested services include photo displays, video presentations, flowers, and music. They are also happy to accommodate special requests like that of Patricia Leithoff’s husband, Bruce. His wish was to have bagpipes playing at his burial, Patricia says, and the Roeders made that happen. At Roeder Mortuaries, they believe that the funeral service should be as unique as the deceased. Another important service available at Roeder Mortuaries is pre-planning for funeral and burial arrangements. Their free planning booklet advises that you record any preferences you have about cremation or burial, what cemetery you prefer, and what type of service you would like to have, including such details as what music or hymns you prefer. The booklet also focuses on information that your loved ones will need after your death. This might include military service information (such as branch of service and discharge date), your vital statistics, your social security information, and other necessary details that might not be known to your family. An important aspect of the pre-planning booklet is the opportunity it offers for family members to collect family information that may be known only to one member of the family. It’s no secret that family history is sometimes lost when an elder member dies without passing on knowledge. The pre-planning booklet from Roeder Mortuaries encourages you to record this family history before it is lost forever. Over the last 100 years, Roeder Mortuaries has expanded into three area locations. In Omaha, the locations are at 4932 Ames Avenue (402-453-5600) and 2727 North 108th Street (402-496-9000). In Gretna, they’re located at 11710 Standing Stone Drive (402-3320090). Jon Roeder is friendly and very knowledgeable. He works out of the West Omaha location, where the atmosphere is airy, open, and comfortable, and the facility’s accessibility for people with mobility issues

48

is impressive. Jon explains that their pre-planning service is funded through an insurance policy. One of the many advantages of funding your burial with insurance is that insurance is portable. Seniors often move to different states to be closer to grandchildren or to enjoy warmer climates. The insurance policy travels with you and can be used wherever your family eventually wishes to make burial arrangements. Another advantage of pre-planning your funeral is the opportunity to pay for it in advance. This can lead to a significant cost savings. If you pre-pay the cost of burial, Roeder Mortuaries guarantee that no matter when the death occurs—even 50 years later—your selections are set at the prices you agree on when you do the planning. Your costs will not increase over time. The Roeder family knows that a loved one’s death is not just sad—it can also lead to a lot of confusion. On their website (roedermortuary.com), they let you know what to do and who to contact if someone dies in your presence. This is an emotionally overwhelming experience, and most people going through it appreciate step-by-step guidance. Here’s what they suggest: Step 1: Initial contact. Who must be contacted depends upon how and where the death occurs. This step outlines who to contact initially. Step 2: Making arrangements. This step outlines what needs to be done to prepare for a service and how to make the necessary arrangements. Step 3: Preparing for the service. This step outlines what choices need to be made after the service is arranged but before the service takes place. This includes items such as music selection, luncheon preparation, and a book to record donations and visitors. Step 4: After the service. This step sets out what needs to be done after the burial, such as writing thank-you notes, financial tips for the family, and what agencies (like credit card companies) need to be notified when someone has died. If you need to arrange funeral services for a loved one or if you’d like to plan your own services, call on Roeder Mortuaries. They’ve been helping Omaha families for more than 100 years, and they would be happy to help your family, too. For more information, visit roedermortuary.com. WE

Focus on Finance

The Changing Investment Environment Value Investing and Fees Are Down By George Morgan

We can all agree that Warren Buffett knows a thing or two about investing. His official introduction to the field came in the early 1950s, when he took a class at Columbia University. The professor of the class was the legendary investing guru Ben Graham. In the early 1930s, Mr. Graham wrote a book titled “The Intelligent Investor.” Since its initial offering, this book has gone through dozens of editions, and it is still being published today. In his book, Mr. Graham divided investors into two distinct camps: value investors and speculators. Value investors are people who base their investment decisions upon the value of the company underlying the stock. Value investors can seem almost religious about this approach. Speculators are investors who buy stock simply because they think the price will go up. Speculators do a minimum amount of research and basically operate off their gut feelings. They don’t care about methodology—what matters is that they make money. Value investors begin by calculating the value of the underlying company and then comparing it to the price of the stock in the open market. If the price of the stock in the open market was less than the value they calculated, they would buy it. The assumption was that others would come to the same conclusion and would then buy the stock, as well, driving the price up until it reached the calculated underlying value. If value investors owned a stock and the market drove the price above what they thought was the real value of the company, they would sell it. Mr. Graham’s book included such things as a safety factor based upon the assets of the company and the amount of cash on the company’s balance sheet. He devoted a great deal of time to the economics of whatever industry the company was involved in. He wrote that you can be the best company in a bad industry, but he would rather be a good company in a great industry. Recently, Mr. Buffett announced that Berkshire Hathaway has begun to buy back its own stock. He explained that he was unable to find anywhere to invest the money; that is, companies that were of high quality and selling at a reasonable price. Mr. Buffett no longer manages the investing activities for Berkshire; he has two other managers who handle this function. He has been very outspoken that people are better off using an S&P 500 index fund as their investment choice. Translation: Value investing no longer works. This is quite a change in outlook from a wildly successful investor who was once such a strong proponent of value investing. The other area in the financial services industry that is experiencing major change is the fees that investors are charged. At the center of this movement

50

January 2019

are the mutual fund giants Fidelity and Vanguard. They are currently in a contest to see who will be the first to get fees to zero. The implications of this rivalry are significant for investors, since fees can greatly reduce investment returns. In fact, with compounding interest, fees can end up costing an investor tens of thousands of dollars over the course of a decade or two. A common question that I get about zero-fee funds is: How good can a fund be if it’s free? The fact is that fees mostly go toward paying fund managers. In actively managed funds, fund managers actively trade stocks. Trading stocks costs money, as does hiring a fund manager, and investors in these funds pay for those services with fees. The funds with the lowest fees are index funds, which duplicate a specific market index. The stocks in these funds are not traded, so there is no fund manager. Hundreds of studies show that, in the long run, index funds outperform actively managed funds, mainly because they cost less. The march to zero is not the only change to financial sector fees; changes are also occurring in the way some fees are calculated. These changes apply to 401(k) accounts and have to do with the fees the financial services industry charges to administer retirement plans. Under the traditional model, the fees to pay for bookkeeping and the selection of the mutual funds that are available to plan participants are calculated as a percentage of assets. This means that a participant with a large balance pays significantly more than a participant with a small balance, but they both receive the same services. Flat-rate fees, which are the same regardless of account balance, are perhaps a more equitable approach, and some funds are offering this method. After all, it takes the same amount of effort to file paperwork for a $10,000 account as it does for a $1,000,000 account, so why should the second account holder pay more in fees? Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. Non-Medical Companion Care Helping Seniors Stay at Home

By Linda Barnes

Though many seniors do not require nursing care, they may need assistance with daily tasks to continue living independently at home. A variety of local providers offer such things as a hand with household chores, help with personal care, companionship, or transportation. Flexible options provide services for a few hours or a few days each week. This can be a great way to help seniors age in place. The number of individuals and companies offering in-home services for seniors has mushroomed in recent years. Several levels of care are offered, so it’s important to understand the distinction between non-medical care, often called personal or companion care, and the services provided in the home by health professionals. Home health care is provided by a licensed medical professional. Services might include wound care, physical therapy, pain management, or administration of doctor-prescribed medications. Conversely, non-medical care provides assistance with daily activities such as bathing, toileting, transportation to appointments, shopping, medication reminders, meal preparation, or light housekeeping. Determining a senior’s particular needs is essential for hiring the right help. For example, if assistance is needed only with personal grooming or general household chores, it would be unnecessarily costly to hire a health professional. Payment for non-

medical services is generally out of pocket, and Medicare does not usually cover non-medical care. Some long-term insurance may pay for in-home health care, and health care is more likely to be covered by Medicare. Non-medical in-home care is a boon to families who are unable, because of careers or living at a distance, to provide help with daily tasks that a loved one needs. My mother provided assistance to my grandmother many years ago when there was little professional inhome care available. Today, we have extensive resources to call upon, including both agencies and individuals. Going through an agency does provide certain advantages. Agencies screen their workers with background checks and evaluate their relevant experience so that families don’t have to undertake those screening tasks themselves. Working with an agency also ensures that back-up care is available if the regular caregiver needs to be absent.

Agencies handle all the paperwork, such as payroll, taxes, and scheduling, and they will address any caregiver performance issues. They generally provide liability insurance in case a caregiver is injured on the job. When hiring from an agency that provides both non-medical care and home health care, you can often upgrade to medical care should the need arise. With a large pool of caregivers, an agency can often provide someone who has experience in managing the particular challenges your loved one faces. Social interaction is a significant advantage of in-home care. Many seniors miss the personal contacts they formerly enjoyed and may experience loneliness. Spending time with others is good for emotional well-being and for physical health, as well. Social contact reduces the incidence of depression and keeps us mentally sharp. Though a family’s first question is often about cost, a great deal of information must be considered before an accurate quote can be given. Home care will be personalized for each client, so a cost quote comes only after much discussion. Do ask about the core values of the company and how they are put into daily practice, as well as about caregivers’ training and procedures. Generally, these businesses are either franchised or independently owned. A franchised agency may be more widely known due to advertising and marketing efforts, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they offer a higher quality of service. Some states have licensing requirements for in-home care. If your state does, a company under consideration must have their credentials in order. Ask about insurance and bonding of its caregivers. It is acceptable to ask for proof of insurance. Do they do background checks, verify education requirements, and administer drug testing? What training does the company provide, and how often is it updated? Cost is usually a per-hour fee, often with a minimum requirement per visit. For example, you may only need one hour of services on a given day, but the charge may be for a minimum of two hours. Examine each policy to find one that best matches your loved one’s needs. Be sure to ask how the agency performs initial assessment of client needs. The selection of a caregiver who is a good match can be challenging, but it’s essential for a successful home care experience.Your loved ones will surely appreciate your efforts to allow them the freedom of remaining at home. Simple Stress Management Get the Upper Hand on Stress By Rachel Carver

Between all the shopping, holiday partying, and trying to fit in time with your relatives, you probably feel the usual stress that comes at the end of the holiday season. There are many ways to deal with stress. Sticking to some simple methods can help you keep your stress levels under control throughout the year. Massage therapy can help you relax. The Swedish massage is the most common choice for relaxation. It incorporates smooth and gentle movements with lotions or oils. If you have never had a massage, this is an excellent first choice. An aromatherapy massage is also great for stress management and relaxation. This therapy adds essential oils to provide a pleasing scent and to address specific needs like balance or stress reduction. In a hot stone massage, smooth stones are heated and then placed on certain points of the body to soothe and loosen muscles. Any one of the many styles of yoga can improve your strength and flexibility, release tension in your body, and relax your mind. You should choose a yoga style based on your fitness level and your reasons for practicing yoga. If you are looking for an intense workout, Ashtanga yoga might be a good fit for you. This style links each movement to a breath and calls for continuous poses in a specific order. For healing injuries or stress relief, consider

restorative yoga. These classes have a slower pace and cover as few as five poses. Daily meditation time can also help you unwind and manage stress. Meditation can come with all kinds of complicated trappings, but all you really need is space and time to sit quietly with yourself. Morning is a good time for meditation, as this is when your mind is usually the most relaxed. However, the best time to meditate is whenever you can fully commit to what you are doing. People who meditate routinely report being able to make healthier life choices with ease (such as choosing fruit over a sugary snack). It can also make you more accepting of yourself and can even help you quit smoking. Exercise is an important part of stress management. Not only does it improve your overall well-being, it also increases your

production of endorphins. Any type of exercise that raises your heart rate, from a walk to a run to a nature hike, can pump up these feelings. Concentrating on your body instead of your to-do list can give you some relief from stress and worry, and a daily exercise routine can give you more energy and help you focus more clearly on everything you do. Keep in mind that you shouldn’t exercise right before bedtime, since an elevated body temperature can disrupt your sleep. If you are well-rested and try to stick to a healthy diet, you will find it easier to deal with stress. Food that is low in nutritional value and high in calories can give you a momentary energy boost in the form of a sugar rush, but it will soon leave you feeling sluggish (and, probably, reaching for another donut). Avoid large amounts of sugar, caffeine, and alcohol to help keep your stress levels down. A good night’s sleep makes it easier for you to handle your daily tasks. Everything seems harder when you’re tired! Most adults need seven to nine hours of sleep per night. If you have frequent sleep problems, ask your doctor if you might have a sleep disorder. Many times, we find ourselves getting stressed out as we try to finish our to-do lists. You may be able to relieve some of this stress by prioritizing your time. Try making a list of everything you want or need to accomplish in a day or a week; then decide which tasks are urgent and which are merely important. Important tasks are those that need to get done but will not crash your life to a halt if they get done tomorrow (such as exercising, mowing the lawn, paying the gas bill the day it arrives). Urgent tasks are things that cannot be postponed (for example, picking up the kids from school, turning off the burner under your dinner, paying your gas bill the day that it’s due). Tackling an important task like paying your gas bill before it becomes urgent and your gas is shut off can really cut down on the frantic scramble to get everything done. As you attend to your important task list, your urgent task list will naturally shrink. When your to-do list is less urgent, you won’t feel the stress of trying to do everything at once. Now that the holidays are wrapping up, take time for you! The Road to Self-Driving Cars We’re Well on Our Way! By Brennan Hallock

From Tesla to Google to Chevrolet to Uber—car and tech companies are racing to dominate the driverless car market. Though the technology is complex, the biggest obstacle to self-driving cars is actually convincing consumers that the product is safe and is something they want! One approach many automakers have taken is to slowly add in more and more autonomous vehicle features to their already existing lineup. Though consumers are not entirely on board with fully autonomous vehicles, many of the features that come along with autonomous driving are popular additions to vehicles already on the market. There are a number of vehicles on the road now that have the ability to do much of the driving. One example is the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which can be equipped with autonomous driving features. These include a lane-keeping system to maintain proper spacing between nearby vehicles. It can also change lanes and guide the vehicle around corners. Another example is the BMW 5 Series, which is capable of fully autonomous parking—both parallel and perpendicular. It also has the ability to drive autonomously in stop-and-go traffic. It manages steering and speed by using lane markings and nearby cars for guidance. Probably the most well-known example of a semi-autonomous vehicle on the road today is the Tesla Model S. This vehicle includes four cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors to determine what is hap-

pening around the car at all times. This vehicle can center itself in its lane, automatically change lanes, transition from one freeway to another, transition from a freeway to surface streets, and park itself. The Model S is about as close to a completely autonomous vehicle there is on the market today, and Tesla plans to release a fully autonomous version of this model in the near future. These are only three of many models that have some amazing self-driving technology. Some other features include steering support to avoid collisions, adaptive cruise control, the ability to determine the fastest lane on a highway and guide you to that lane, and emergency stopping if the vehicle senses the driver is not responsive. These features are all available to drivers now, and many more are coming soon. As semi-autonomous vehicles become more accepted on the road, manufacturers will continue to add in features that reduce the driver’s involvement and allow the car to do more

of its own driving. The days when you can nap or read a book on your commute while your car does all the driving are no longer in the distant future; they are coming sooner than you think. Volvo has promised to have a fully autonomous vehicle on the market by 2021 that requires no input from the driver other than the destination. Self-parking was one of the first self-driving features to be introduced to consumers. Research prototypes of this technology were being introduced even 20 years ago. Because this technology has been on the market so long, it has become pervasive and reliable. Self-parking technology uses electromagnetic and ultrasonic sensors installed in the front and rear bumpers of the vehicle to detect space, obstacles, and distance. Using this data, the computer within the vehicle calculates the correct path to park the vehicle and steer it into the space. Not all self-parking systems are the same. Some only include steering, while others, such as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class system, include both parallel and perpendicular parking, with automatic steering, shifting, braking, and more. Some other models that have self-parking technology include the Lincoln MKS, Ford Focus, Toyota Prius, Chrysler 200, Tesla Model S, BMW i3, Chevrolet Malibu, Cadillac CT6, and Volkswagen Passat.

Self-driving cars will affect—and already have affected—the auto industry in many ways. Another industry that will be affected by this technology is the car insurance industry, which was estimated to be a $259 billion industry in 2017. Research indicates that self-driving vehicles are astronomically safer than vehicles driven by human beings, but, because they are not on the road yet, insurance companies do not have statistical data for them. Because of this, insurance costs will likely start high. After self-driving cars begin to be sold en masse, insurance costs are likely to drop quickly. Part of this could be due to car companies entering the insurance market. Automakers have an incentive to insure their own autonomous vehicles, as they want to lower the barriers for bringing new customers on board. In addition, as more autonomous vehicles enter the market, they should get even smarter and safer, which should also drive down insurance costs. Self-driving cars are coming our way! Whether you’re excited about the technology or wary of it, it’s worth giving it a test drive before you make up your mind. The Good Life

It’s Wedding Planning Season The Best Help From the Pros By Holly Tierney-Bedord

A wedding is the ultimate celebration of love and commitment. If you’ve recently gotten engaged, congratulations! Luckily, planning a wedding can be exciting and fun, especially when you delegate the right tasks to professionals. While wedding ceremonies are definitely trending in a less formal direction, there’s no right or wrong way to do it. Focus on making your big day a reflection of you and your spouse-to-be, and the rest will fall into place. Your choice of venue is one of the most important wedding planning decisions because it sets the mood for the whole day. While having a wedding ceremony in a church is as popular as ever, other ideas include parks, beaches, backyards, dance halls, and hotels, as well as architecturally significant venues like historic mansions, libraries, and restaurants. Rustic locations like barns and stables, as well as outdoor tents and indoor-outdoor spaces, are increasingly popular. Along with the basic concerns of rental cost and availability, you need to consider several other factors when selecting a venue. You may want to find a wedding venue that also works as a reception venue (or is near your reception site) so you and your guests will have an easy time getting from one to the next. Think about how your photos will look in that location, but also consider practical matters like bathroom accessibility and parking. A very remote location may be beautiful, but it may not work well for guests and vendors who need to make deliveries. Think about food while you consider venues because some reception venues do their own catering and some do not. Venues that don’t cater may have preferred caterers to recommend, or you may be on your own to arrange for food. Some couples choose companies that are dedicated to catering events, but other couples work with a restaurant that does catering on the side. While you may not be able to finalize your menu and head count until shortly before the wedding, the sooner you handle the food planning, the better your chances of having things go smoothly. Some caterers include alcohol service, also. If not, they can likely recommend a reputable bartending service. Full-service venues will likely provide table linens, dishes, flatware, and the like. (Some caterers also provide these.) If you’re selecting these items yourself, visit your local party rental supply store. There, you can rent everything from chairs to table runners to dessert forks, and you can get some expert advice. Many of these rental shops also offer items for sale, but one advantage of renting is that you don’t have to store all those things that you may never use again. Be sure to find out whether set-up is included. Let’s talk dessert. Magnificent, structured wedding cakes are still the choice of many couples. Others are choosing less traditional desserts, like cupcake towers,

60

January 2019

donut walls, ice cream sundae bars, or a selection of petit fours. Whatever you choose, find a local baker who specializes in the dessert you want to serve. Invitations often match the theme of the wedding. Popular trends include envelopes with beautiful paper linings, professional calligraphy, and keepsakes like coasters or photos. Invitations should be mailed about eight weeks before the wedding; earlier, if many guests will need to travel a long distance. “Save the Date” cards, sent out six months to a year in advance, are helpful if your wedding is a destination wedding or falls on a holiday weekend. In general, about 80 percent of those invited will attend a local wedding. For destination weddings, the percentage is usually lower. Decorating with flowers, shells, and other natural touches is more popular than ever. Candles are also popular. Guests love having something to remember your day! Jars of homemade jam, pots of succulents, flower seeds, or other small, personalized gifts make wonderful favors. Photo booths with fun props are still popular—guests get to keep their photos, and you get to keep the negatives. Don’t forget other important vendors, like a great photographer and videographer to document your nuptials. Choose wisely when selecting a local band or DJ so your wedding has the energy and tone that’s true to you. If this all seems overwhelming, consider hiring a wedding planner. You still get to make the decisions about your big day, but your planner has already done all the venue and vendor research for you! Planners can also be there the day of the wedding to take care of last-minute details and hitches. The most important step of all? Remember that weddings are about love and happiness. Don’t let the inevitable glitches get you down! Do your best to plan ahead, and then relax and enjoy a day you’ll never forget. Ecuador’s Treasure The Galapagos Islands

By Jackie Williams

Did you know that the “Panama hat” is actually an “Ecuador hat”? That’s right. The style was originally from Ecuador, but it was made famous in North America when President Roosevelt was photographed wearing one in Panama during the construction of the Canal, back in 1906. Ecuador has a lot to offer vacationers. Visiting Ecuador puts you right on the equator, and the nation is described as “Four Worlds in One.” Let’s explore one of those worlds for your next trip—to the Galapagos Islands. First of all, no visas are required for stays less than 90 days. They use the American dollar, and credit cards are widely accepted. The weather in the Galapagos Islands is split into a warm wet season and a cool dry season, with steady temperatures ranging from 72–86 degrees throughout the year. Any time of year is good to go, but keep in mind that high season runs from June to September and from December to January. The food is diverse, and Ecuador is renowned for its fresh seafood, especially local ceviche. How do you get to the Galapagos Islands? You will need to fly in or cruise in (or both). The first step is to have your travel agent book your flight to Quito or Guayaquil on mainland

Ecuador; you can continue your trip from there. I recommend taking one of the daily flights to Baltra or San Cristobal and booking a cruise to explore some of the 20 islands in the Galapagos archipelago. You can also book lodging on one of the larger populated islands (Isabela, San Cristobal, or Santa Cruz) and take day trips to the other islands. This may be a cheaper option, but you will be limited on which islands you can visit because of distance. You can also do an island-hopping tour, where you can stay at inhabited islands overnight as you travel around to the others, staying at a new place each night. Choose from budget to luxury accommodations and boats along the way. When should you go? Well, that depends on what you want to see most. To name just a few of the popular sights: Giant tortoises hatch in December; blue-footed boobies do their court- ›››

ship dances in May; flowers and vegetation are in full bloom from December to May; and the penguins and albatross are abundant in June through November. If you enjoy scuba diving, you are in for a treat! World-class diving will bring you up close to sharks, sea lions, manta rays, turtles, iguanas, and colorful reef fish. The Marine Reserve is also a whale sanctuary, where over 16 species can be seen between July and September. Keep in mind that Galapagos National Park includes protected areas; you have to have a park-certified naturalist guide with you in certain areas. They want to protect and preserve this unique biodiversity for as long as possible, so we all need to do our part by being respectful and following their guidelines and rules. The official travel website for the nation of Ecuador provides a few highlights of the islands to help you decide where to go: The ancient Isla Espanola is a paradise for marine birds. North Seymour Island is a spectacular place for hiking, swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. For watching whales and dolphins, Punta Espinoza is the best place. Tourists can swim with dolphins and even go kayaking with pilot whales. Scuba diving there is sure to include seeing marine iguanas swimming back and forth from colony to colony. Bartolome is the most visited and most photographed island in the Galapagos. Fernandina is the opposite—it is the most active and most pristine of the Galapagos volcanoes. Except for a single visitor site on the northeast edge of the island, the island is maintained in its pristine state. Isabela’s rich fauna is beyond compare. It is home to more wild tortoises than all the other islands combined, with a separate species on each volcano. On the west coast of Isabela, the upwelling of the nutrient-rich Cromwell Current creates a feeding ground for fish, whales, dolphins, and birds. These waters have long been known as the best place to see whales in the Galapagos. Many travelers agree that seeing the Galapagos Islands is a trip of a lifetime. If this destination wasn’t on your list before, it should be now! Call your travel agent, pack your bags, and get ready to get up close with the natural beauty and animal life that thrives on the Galapagos Islands! Enterprising Ideas

Talking About Suicide Instilling Hope, Saving Lives By Marge Shoemaker

The Kim Foundation believes that suicide is similar to “the elephant in the room.” It impacts us all in some way, but we aren’t giving it the attention it deserves. That’s the message that Julia Hebenstreit, Executive Director of The Kim Foundation, wants to share. The Kim Foundation was founded by the Larry Courtnage family in memory of Larry’s daughter, Kim. She lived with mental illness and, in her mid 20s, took her own life. The mission of The Kim Foundation is to serve as a supportive resource and compassionate voice to lives touched by mental illness and suicide. Their ultimate vision is a community free of suicide that embraces high-quality mental health services and prevention. This writer was invited by John Maxell, General Secretary for the Omaha Valley of Scottish Rite, to attend a presentation by The Kim Foundation that was sponsored by and held at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center. John explains that sponsoring such events and making space available for non-profit organizations without charge are part of the Scottish Rite’s community outreach efforts. This particular presentation is designed to educate people in recognizing the warning signs of suicide, connecting those who need it to help, and using appropriate language in regard to suicide. Julia begins by providing some statistics. Twenty percent of adults in America have a mental health condition. They usually start when the person is young: 50 percent of all lifetime cases of mental health conditions begin by age 14, and 75 percent begin by age 24. In the previous year, nearly 60 percent of adults with a mental health condition didn’t receive services, and nearly half of youth (8–15 years) didn’t receive services for their mental health conditions. Serious mental illness costs the United States an estimated $193.2 billion in lost earnings every year. Suicide, Julia continues, is the second leading cause of death in young people aged 15–34 years. In fact, one out of six high school students nationwide seriously considered suicide in the last year. Every 13 minutes, a person dies by suicide in the United States, and 90 percent of those people had an underlying mental health condition. (Check out 13minutes.org for more information.) Mental illness, Julia reminds us, is caused by many factors, some of which are easier to address than others. Some mental illnesses have been linked to a chemical imbalance in the brain. Neurotransmitters help the nerve cells within the brain communicate with each other. When communication breaks down, symptoms of mental illness can ensue. Mental health conditions may be due to heredity, infection, brain injury, prenatal developmental damage, or poor nutrition or exposure to toxins. Psychological factors may include childhood trauma from abuse, loss of a parent, or neglect. Other

66

January 2019

external factors may stem from dysfunctional family life, poverty, significant life changes, and social or cultural expectations. John Maxell, General Don’t lose hope! Julia maintains that recovery from Secretary for the Omaha mental illness and preventing suicide is possible—with Valley of Scottish Rite the right support and resources. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) defines recovery as “a process of change through which individuals improve health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential.” SAMHSA advises that the most successful recovery should be holistic and culturally based, will require support from peers and allies through relationships and social networks, and should involve the individual’s family and community, demanding respect and offering strength and responsibility. That kind of support can only come from a community that is aware of the warning signs of suicide. Some signs are subtle…others are more obvious. They include reckless behavior, significant changes in sleep habits or behavior, saying good-bye, talking about wanting to die, or giving away possessions. Any sign experienced over a prolonged period of time raises a red flag. If you suspect someone is considering suicide, don’t be afraid to ask about it! Find out if your loved one has a suicide plan in mind. Encourage people to call the suicide hotline at 800-273-TALK (8255)…or call the hotline yourself. Ask for help. The call center is local. The presentation concludes with a panel of three suicide survivors…that is, people who have had a loved one die by suicide. Mick’s father was a successful businessman. Mindy’s youngest son took his life at age 20, thinking, “They’ll never understand.” Martha is a two-time survivor: her sister had bipolar disorder, an illness not recognized as real by her parents, and her partner was a first responder focused on helping others. These three are part of the Metro Area LOSS Team, a local outreach to suicide survivors. Their advice is two-fold: First, find what works for you. Second, be kind to yourself—don’t beat yourself up by focusing on what you think you “should have” done. You can reach The Kim Foundation at 402-891-6911 or thekimfoundation.org. The Green Thumb

A Constant Gardener

Keeping Busy During Winter By Sharon Knierim

As gardeners, we all understand that just because the ground is frozen and the yard is blanketed with snow, that doesn’t mean that our outdoor activities are on hiatus. Certainly, we do not have to move with as much haste as in the hectic months of May and June, but there are still gardening opportunities to be enjoyed during the coldest part of the year. It is no secret that some gardeners enjoy being in the garden at this time of year just as much as in the summer, when the humidity and heat can make us physically uncomfortable. For example, there are NO BUGS to bite us, and snakes have all gone underground. Naturally, snakes have to be above ground sometimes, but gardening is much less unnerving for some of us when the snakes are hidden from view. You probably have a winter gardening wardrobe that includes warm garments and proper footwear. Though sensible for many tasks, sneakers are not recommended for the winter garden. Wearing flat-bottomed boots will make any outdoor experience much safer. The soles of boots are designed to keep you upright, so you’re less likely to fall and suffer an injury. Of course, you will want a warm sweater or sweatshirt under your coat. Your gardening coat should be loose but not floppy. A coat

that is too big can get caught on plants or fencing or even hardscape. Conversely, a coat that is too tight won’t allow for the movement of air between the coat and the body. A good pair of leather gardening gloves will keep your hands warm and prevent cuts and scrapes. Because we lose such a vast amount of body heat through our heads, put on a stocking cap or other warm hat before entering winter weather. You’ll be amazed at how much more comfortable you will feel, and you can protect those delicate ears. Take all precautions necessary to avoid frost bite, which can damage fingers, toes, and ears. If you can’t resist going out to the garden even when the weather is discouraging (that is, after an ice storm, during a stiff northern wind, or in

extremely low temperatures), be sure to let someone know where you are going. Keep track of your time outdoors. Don’t overdo it. One fun chore in the winter garden is feeding the birds. Because Mother Nature can sometimes be uncooperative and cover natural food such as berries and seeds, birds have learned to often rely on the bird feeders provided by their generous gardeners. Before beginning to share with the birds, study the feathered population in your own backyard and purchase feed accordingly. If you are hoping to attract birds rarely seen in your yard, do a little homework to determine what kind of feeder and what type of food they prefer. With a little luck and good preparation, you should have a flock of colorful birds in no time. Once you have drawn a crowd of feathered friends, pull up a comfortable chair and enjoy watching them. Birds have personalities worth viewing, and you will soon notice that you have some of the same birds coming to the feeder every day. Don’t forget water! Birds are thirsty during the winter, and offering them a drink is a great kindness. Heated bird baths can be installed, or heaters can be added to existing bird baths. These heated baths keep the water from freezing, even during the coldest weather. Adding drinking water to the feeding program will keep the birds happy and healthy until spring comes and these appliances are no longer needed. If you’ve been “taking it easy” for the last two or three months, January is a good time to work on your stamina so you will be ready to get back out in the garden very soon. It’s really not long from now that we will all find ourselves outdoors, involved in early spring activities. Keeping the back and leg muscles in good shape over the winter is very important, and getting some regular exercise now will eliminate the problem of stiff and sore muscles once spring arrives. Temptation is one factor that very few of us can turn away from. To satisfy your winter yearning for new plants, purchase envelopes of seeds, which are available now in gardening stores and supermarkets. Having them on hand will put you ahead of the game when planting season arrives. Editor’s Note: Sharon Knierim has been a Master Gardener since 2003 through Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. Dog Training Essentials Best Practices for Pets and Owners By Brie Christensen

Bringing home a new puppy or dog is a very exciting prospect, and it’s also a big responsibility. Although it might not be at the forefront of our minds, one of the first steps into pet parenting should involve some form of basic dog training. There’s no denying that training a dog takes a lot of patience and a lot of work, but it’s not impossible, and it’s vital to the safety of your pet and your family. Some pet owners put a lot of effort into training with not much in the way of results, and they might conclude that their dog is untrainable. More often, pet owners are just making some common training mistakes. Experts from the American Kennel Club say that attitude might be the biggest error people make. Positive reinforcement is critical! In order to learn, dogs must feel comfortable and secure during training sessions. It’s also recommended to include the whole family in the dog training process. This helps children learn how to interact with their pets, and training may go quicker if the dog receives consistent interaction from the whole family at home. Some type of formal dog training is generally recommended when the pup is about six months old. Delaying training only allows for missed opportunities for the animal to learn how to behave properly. This doesn’t mean an older dog cannot be trained, though. No matter what you’ve heard about old dogs and new tricks, adult animals are perfectly capable of being trained, as long as owners remain committed to the task. When training an older dog, owners and trainers should consider any physical conditions that might limit the animal during training. It’s also critical to take a look at the dog’s training and behavior history to make sure you’re well prepared heading into training. Selecting the right trainer is vital for young and old pups alike, according to the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT). The APDT says that an interview process is the best way to become acquainted with potential dog trainers. Asking the right questions can help you decide whether you wish to move forward or look elsewhere. Ask about the trainer’s educational background in the field of dog training and what methods the trainer plans to use. Inquire about the equipment that will be used during the sessions (you may need to pay for specific collars, leashes, or treats). Always seek out references from other pet owners who have worked with the trainers you’re considering. You also need to decide if you’d rather train in a group setting or one-on-one with the trainer. If working in a group setting, your pet might be easily distracted, but dogs will eventually learn to focus—it’s important that owners do not become upset or embarrassed in these situations. If working one-on-one with a trainer, the APDT suggests working with the trainer to customize an action plan for best results. Some pet owners choose to do a mix of group and one-on-one training sessions, as both are beneficial.

Most training sessions begin with previously learned material to reinforce those behaviors or habits. It’s especially important to ask questions during the session and always keep in mind that training is ultimately creating a special bond between you and your pet. As a standard, most dogs are trained each week for a couple of months, but experts stress the importance of working with your dog outside of class to reinforce what you and your dog have learned. If you’re considering adopting an animal from a rescue, be prepared to retrain the animal. Even if the pet had an owner prior to being put up for adoption, the animal could have picked up some negative habits. Common behavior issues in rescue dogs include improper urination, chewing, jumping, and pulling on the leash. Fortunately, all of these habits are correctable through consistent training. Of course, dogs have individual reactions to training, but some breeds are known to be easier to train than others. Yorkshire terriers, beagles, Pomeranians, dalmatians, and bulldogs are just a few breeds that are often easy to train, according to Animal Planet. On the other hand, dogs such as Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, and German shepherds can be more difficult to train. Regardless of breed, all dogs should be trained to ensure proper behavior as they continue to grow. Everyone benefits from proper dog training—your pet and your family as well as other families and other pets! Perhaps the most important thing to remember when it comes to dog training is that results don’t happen overnight. Like any kind of training, dog training takes time, patience, commitment, and, most importantly, practice. Positive Perspective

A Very Few Things Right Meaningful Resolutions

New Year’s Resolutions. Magical motivation for a minute! I like New Year’s Resolutions. The whole concept of taking a little time to reflect on the year past, to review our achievements and areas where we might want to see improvement, is an exciting process. That’s got to be good for the soul, right? I do find, however, as I make my review and sketch out my resolutions, that I feel much as Steven Wright describes…. “Right now I’m having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.” —Steven Wright That’s why my New Year’s Resolutions always seem to come to me so quickly and seem familiar—they’re the same one’s Ive had for 30 years! Not that I feel terrible about this, because each year I enter the days ahead with conviction and resolve. I know that I will accomplish some things, and, wisely, will leave some things just as I have encountered them. Actually, I leave almost everything as I encounter it. As every new experience presents itself, I look for the opportunity to create the experience just as I would like to. Generally, I would like to leave most things as they are.

By Janet Van deWalle

“Equal opportunity means everyone will have a fair chance at being incompetent.” —Laurence J. Peter There are areas where I do feel confident and competent, and areas where I am certain that the tasks required to achieve success were definitely designed for another special person to experience. I feel it’s important to allow others the opportunity to create success. Therefore, I purposefully choose to leave most things as I encounter them. I might say that I resolve to leave most things unresolved. I will improve or change one or more things this year, as long as I’m certain it won’t upset the delicate balance of order established in the universe. “You only have to do a very few things right in your life so long as you don’t do too many things wrong.” —Warren Buffett I think the key to making meaningful resolutions that are able to be accomplished, is to gain some insight before making the resolutions. I need to gain some insight into what I’m all about, and why I’m here—what is my PURPOSE? With that insight, I can do a very few things right! “It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.” —Steven Wright
