Publisher’s Notes

A Great Match Autumn, here we come! By now, most of us have gotten into the routine of the new season. Kids are back in school. Sweater weather should be here by the time this issue comes out. Fall is such a bittersweet season to me. I love the fire pits, the football, the crisp air. If I didn’t know what was coming next, it most likely would be my favorite season! My family is in the final preparation stages for my son’s wedding to his longtime girlfriend, Sam. My granddaughters, Savannah (13) and McKenna (7), are going to be in the wedding. Savannah will be the junior bridesmaid, and McKenna will be the flower girl. They are both very excited. They get to have their hair done on the day of the wedding by my sister-in-law, Teresa Albracht, get manicures a couple of days prior, and will be wearing two VERY pretty dresses! My great-nephew, Fox, who is two, will be the ring bearer. It should be a great ceremony. There is lots of excitement running through the families! Everyone is checking the weather multiple times a day. Today, it looks good…72 degrees and sunny. Beautiful! We are all keeping our fingers crossed that the forecast holds. When two people decide to join their lives together, it is a very special, spiritual thing. Think about the commitment that this means! It is choosing one another over everyone else. It is proclaiming to the world that you love one another and want to be together for the rest of your lives. Adam and Sam have been together for almost 11 years, but I would guess that this will be a very special day in their lives. Making it “official” is not just a legal step. Getting married is a day to celebrate one another and to have friends and family witness the union and celebrate together. I must admit that I am curious as to whether they will feel different after the marriage is official. I’m going to give them a month or two and then ask them. My guess is that the answer will be yes. I believe Adam and Sam know each other better than most people out there who head down the aisle. Knowing the person that you have chosen to spend the rest of your life with is a step in the right direction to having a healthy relationship. It’s hard to fake being someone you’re not for 11 years! Adam and Sam have seen each other through some difficult times, and they seem very happy with one another. I think it’s going to be a GREAT MATCH…Congratulations, kids! I’ll let you know next month how it goes. Enjoy the fall!

Top Runway Dressing Moments Fall and Winter 2018 By Holly Bell

What is the simplest and quickest way to look pulled-together from head to toe? You won’t find a better solution than the one-piece practicality of the dress! If it’s been awhile since you’ve tried on dresses, you need to go for it this fall. Today’s shapes are so easy and so varied, everyone can find a style that fits and flatters. The shapes range from body-conscious to body-skimming to the ease of a fit and flare or even the wonderfully modified tent shape. The fabrics are easy to care for and are full of stretch for packability and comfort that looks great from dawn to dark. Add some leggings and pull on some tall boots, and you will be warm and comfortable—not to mention fashionable and professional! Designers are having fun this year with patterns and vibrant colors. Head-to-toe red makes an empowering statement and definitely turns heads! Bold animal prints like leopard, tiger, and zebra are here to stay in many intonations. They’re best worn with little adornment. Remember to keep it simple when choosing to wear an animal print—the print says it all, so it’s virtually a throw-on-and-go look. You’ll be able to find animal prints in your favorite color, no matter what your favorite color is. Fabulous in red leopard, Tom Ford’s ensemble was the hit of the fall runway in contrast to the sheer looks of last summer. Some designers have opted for a more modest look for fall. High necklines and longer lengths prevail throughout the season, which is good news for those of us who are cold-blooded or prefer a more modest look. Just because you aren’t showing much skin, that doesn’t mean you can’t shine—high-shine fabrics are key this season. Shiny silver and other glossy materials like multi-toned metallics are offering an exciting, edgy element. Fall florals are also blossoming on the runway and offer an interesting juxtaposition when worn with a faux fur jacket. Menswear-inspired tailoring will be important this year. One of my favorite looks is a tweed jacket worn over a dress. Adding a bit of swagger, tweed is surprisingly versatile and works with most other patterns and most any color. Usually black or brown with flecks of color in between, tweed seems to pick up whatever color you are wearing with it. This year, classic tweed will be bringing a chic and tasteful touch to skirts, jackets, coats, and dresses. Other Savile Row fabrics such as herringbone, plaids, and checks also add a touch of sophistication to this year’s fall collections. If you’re feeling a little daring, try layering and mixing these patterns together, along with a solid tone. You might be surprised! It can work really well and look totally new and innovative. Fringe was hot a couple of years ago, and it is back in a big way. It has a luxurious, more refined look this time around (rather than the bohemian feel of the past). Fringed dresses reminiscent of the 1920s will be a fun option. Fashion

influencers will be wearing fringe, ties, and narrow scarves dangling from their waistlines this year. Part of the fringe rage is a decidedly western influence in fall fashion. Along with the fringe, western details such as flapped pockets and cowboy prints will sneak into dresses, tops, and jackets. If you’re going to go this route, remember that a little touch of the west goes a long way; be frugal with this trend so you don’t overdo it. Leather dresses will be dominating this fall and winter. If you’re picturing black leather, forget about it! Leather was served up in butterscotch and lime green at fashion shows this fall. Warm, supple, and surprisingly forgiving, a leather dress would be a great option to add to your fall wardrobe. For an impressive fashionista look that would be appropriate for almost any occasion, try topping that leather dress with a tailored tweed jacket. In the world of fashion, every new season takes flashes from the past for inspiration. In 2018, we are taking cues (gentle cues!) from the 1980s. Shoulders are looking a little more assertive; color-blocking is making a return. Belts are landing up around the waist rather than slung around the hips, and the belts are coming in both narrow and wide styles. The most important cue from the designers this year is timeless wearability. Classic fabrics that we love will appear this fall and winter to comfort us with their ease and familiarity. Worn with a few new twists but always with an eye toward comfort, there is nothing not to like about this year’s fall fashions— especially the ubiquitous favorite dress! 2 Tablespoons of soy sauce. Cook for a few minutes and then keep warm. When the wings are done, put them in a large bowl, add the sauce, and stir to coat. Serve with chopped scallions and ranch and bleu cheese dressings. Stuffed Peppers For the stuffing: Sauté 1 pound of meat (ground chuck, chicken, turkey, or sausage) with 1 sliced onion. Stir in 1 cup of cooked rice. Season as desired with salt, pepper, garlic powder, or whatever you like. If necessary, thin the stuffing with a bit of ketchup or tomato paste, broth, or water—be creative! For the peppers: Cut the tops off of 6 green or red peppers and remove the ribs and seeds. Rub the inside and outside of each pepper with olive oil. Salt and pepper the insides. Spoon a bit of stuffing onto the bottom of the casserole. Place the peppers on top and fill them with the stuffing. Sprinkle the tops of the peppers with grated Parmesan. Pour some prepared pasta sauce around and on top of the peppers. Cover with foil. Bake at 375 degrees for 40–45 minutes. Apple Butter Combine 2 cups of unsweetened applesauce in a saucepan with 1/2 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of allspice, a pinch of ground ginger, and a pinch of ground cloves. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let simmer for 1 hour. Cool. Refrigerate leftovers. Pumpkin Butter Mix together 3 cans of pumpkin, 1 cup of water, 2 cups of sugar, 2 Tablespoons of fresh lemon juice, 3 teaspoons of ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon of nutmeg, 1 teaspoon of ground ginger, and

3/4 teaspoon of salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes. Stir occasionally. This can also be made in a slow cooker; cook for 4 hours on low. Refrigerate. Last Harvest Marinara Boil 6–10 red tomatoes for 2 minutes, then put them in a large bowl with water and ice cubes. Remove the skins. In a large Dutch oven, sauté 1 chopped onion. Add the tomatoes, along with 1/2 cup of vegetable or beef stock or water. Cover and simmer on low for 2 hours. Add whatever spices you desire, plus salt and pepper. Add 1 small can of tomato paste and 1/2 cup of brown sugar. Taste and adjust seasonings. Smooth with an immersion blender, if desired. Use now or put in containers to freeze. Apple Cream Pie For the streusel: Mix 1/3 cup of sugar with 1/4 cup of brown sugar, 1/2 cup of flour, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon of grated nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. For the pie: Peel, core, and slice about 4 large apples (Granny, McIntosh)—you will need 4 cups of apple slices. Place apples in a prepared unbaked pie shell. Mix together 1 cup of sugar, 3 Tablespoons of flour, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1 egg, 1 cup of heavy cream, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Pour the cream mixture over the apples. Bake on a cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Remove pie and sprinkle on streusel mixture. Bake for another 40 minutes. Excess Hair Weighing You Down? “Walk with Confidence” at Absolute Perfection Electrolysis By Marge Shoemaker

Many of us, especially women, spend untold amounts of time shaving, waxing, tweezing, or bleaching to diminish the look of unwanted body hair. Of course, we know these methods don’t remove hair permanently, but did you know that pulling your hair out damages the follicle itself, which encourages the hair to grow back more coarsely than it grew in the first place? Mary Brennan, the owner of Absolute Perfection Electrolysis, knows everything you need to know about hair removal, and she can get rid of your unwanted hair for good! When she was growing up, Mary suffered from polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a condition that causes excess hair to grow on the face and body. “I was a track athlete,” she recalls, “and I had sideburns. I wore my hair down around my face to hide my sideburns until I was in the blocks. Then I’d pull my hair back to keep it out of my way when I ran. Right after I crossed the finish line, I loosened my hair and let it down again. I thought nobody would notice.” It wasn’t until she was attending nursing school that Mary learned about electrolysis. She attended classes to get certified in electrolysis while she was completing her nursing training. Today, she holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing and is a certified professional electrologist (CPE) and a licensed electrologist (LE). Nebraska requires certification to practice electrolysis. When Mary was young, not much was known about the causes of excessive hair growth. Today, we know it can be caused by insulin resistance (which may indicate prediabetes) or by an imbalance of the thyroid. Other extreme hair growth conditions include hypertrichosis (sometimes called werewolf syndrome), in which excessive hair may grow anywhere on the body, and hirsutism, which includes male-pattern hair growth on women (usually confined to coarse hair on the chin). These conditions are usually diagnosed and managed medically. Before treatment begins, Mary asks each client to fill out a health history form. She developed the form to help determine what sort of treatment will best meet the client’s needs. “I learn what treatments have been used in the past, how long the condition has existed, and what results the client wants or expects,” she states, “as well as possible causes.” Questions on the form include those about general health, about the present hair problem, and about what treatment methods the client has already tried. The most common causes of excessive hair growth that Mary sees are hormone or endocrine disorders, menopause, or problems with the menstrual period.

12

October 2018

Medications for some diseases can cause excessive hair growth. Many of her female clients are bothered by hair growth on the lip or chin; men seem to be disturbed more by ear hair. Transgender clients often want to remove excess hair to bring their bodies into alignment with their identities. Whatever the cause…whatever the location…whatever the problem, Mary wants to help her clients “walk with confidence!” Determining the probable cause of excessive hair growth and knowing how the client has dealt with the problem in the past helps Mary determine the best modality of treatment going forward. “Electrolysis has become a generic term for permanent hair removal, just as Kleenex has become a generic term for facial tissue,” she explains. However, there are actually three treatment modalities (that is, the mode of hair removal) to choose from. “Modalities include electrolysis (the use of hair-strand-fine needles inserted into the hair follicles), thermolysis (the use of a heated needle), and a blend of the two.” She also considers the client’s skin type, the condition of the skin, and what the client has done previously to treat the problem. There’s some psychology involved, too, Mary explains. Some of her clients have a positive self-image, and some of them do not. “I listen to my clients and note what is important to each of them. I explain the process, and I’m up-front about the need for maintenance. Possible side effects, including temporary redness, are explained. For long-term clients, I keep an eye out for new or unusual hair growth that may indicate a problem that should be addressed by a medical professional.” Mary’s advice to all of us: If you don’t know, ask. Explore! Look into all the possibilities. Only with education can you determine what works for you and your lifestyle. For more information or to schedule a consultation, call Mary Brennan at 402-398-3300. She doesn’t answer the phone while she’s with a client, so please leave a message! Mary works by appointment only, and her schedule generally includes both days and evenings, Monday through Saturday. WE

A Woman’s Work

The Spooky Season Here It Comes Again!

By Sharon Knierim

To me, October heralds the beginning of the holiday season, and it seems only natural that we spend this moment trying to scare the wits out of unsuspecting folks. Everyone needs a little harmless excitement now and then! Besides, we follow it in November with giving thanks for good harvests and for the blessings bestowed upon us. Then we really hit the big time with Christmas festivities. Of course, we don’t stop there! We wrap it all up with over-the-top New Year’s celebrations. I guess, once we start celebrating, it’s tough to give up all that fun. Although many of the major holidays come during the last few months of the calendar year, Halloween is the one that turns us into semi-scheming kids again. We all have special memories of Halloween trick-or-treating or pranks. Whether you are the target of a prank or acting as the instigator, keeping your sense of humor is what makes the holiday fun. Is it spooky? Sure, it can be awfully spooky. In fact, it can be just as spooky as we allow it to be. Spooky is fun! Gore and terror, however, can have some bad effects on us. We have to be sure that we don’t take it too far; that way, everyone can have fun…and that’s what Halloween is all about!

Dr. John P. Wewel

REGIONAL LEADER IN ORAL SURGICAL CARE

In today’s world, at least as many adults as children revere and celebrate this holiday. Like most holidays, food and apparel are focal points, and themed gatherings and parties are in style. According to retailers, millions of dollars are spent each year on Halloween preparation, including costumes, food, decorations, parties, and games. Holiday celebrations don’t often have a competitive edge, but Halloween is that rare time when we vie for honors in cooking unusual dishes, wearing outrageous costumes, and entertaining ourselves and each other with games and ghostly traditions. If your trick-or-treating days are long past, you may recall dressing up in a ghostly sheet, in a cowboy or cowgirl costume,

or perhaps in a pirate outfit. We were pretty well decked out in non-scary outfits and were usually recognized by our “victims” because at least one of our parents accompanied us around the neighborhood. Parents were probably sent out with us to keep a lid on the craziness that all kids seek when dressed in a costume. Wise parents could guide us by knowing which neighborhoods offered the best treats, which areas to avoid, and when to go home. A close friend of mine just told me that she and her friends used to start their Halloween adventure two or three nights before the actual October 31st hullabaloo. Apparently, they would knock on the front door, then run around the house and knock on the back door, then return to the front door to ring the doorbell, and then hustle off to another house full of unsuspecting residents. In the final analysis, she decided long ago that this bad habit probably greatly diminished the quality and quantity of treats finally handed out to little spooks on Halloween night. Sometimes, a prank does go just a little bit far! Sounds as though there were more tricks than treats. Also, it sounds like fun. Much of today’s neighborhood trickor-treating has been replaced by organized parties and gatherings. Shopping centers and local churches often sponsor safe and sane Halloween parties indoors, away from the unpredictable elements that the Midwest is known for. Adults are always present, and many of the yummy and sticky candy has been replaced by granola, or almonds, or apples. Is it as much fun? Well, that’s up to us! Fun is what you make it. Many adults love to throw Halloween parties. Costumes are usually required, and outlandish foods are a must. Fun? You bet these parties can be lots of fun. Life should be enjoyed! It’s good to be outrageous and step out of our everyday roles once in a while. Who says an accountant can’t be a vampire for one evening? Can a plumber become an astronaut? Why not? Everyone has a special Halloween memory. Here’s mine: In the fourth grade, one of our male classmates dressed in a costume (stuffed with pillows) and a wig with glasses to make himself look like our teacher, Miss Rosemary. Miss Rosemary did not appreciate his mimicry. She grabbed him by the ear and hauled him off to the principal’s office, where he spent the rest of the day. The lesson? It’s fun to have fun, but it’s not nice to ridicule someone else to have that fun. I hope you have a fun Halloween. Boo! WE

Vantage Point

AseraCare Hospice Loving Care for Patients and Families By Marge Shoemaker

Many people think that hospice care is only for the dying. Julie Wyssman, Director of Hospice Operations at AseraCare Hospice, says that is only partly right. When patients are faced with life-limiting circumstances, hospice works to meet the needs and wishes of both the patients and their families. Prior to working with AseraCare Hospice, Julie worked in nephrology, emergency medicine, and long-term care. She loved that atmosphere but finds that the end-of-life services that AseraCare offers are much more fulfilling...especially their services for veterans. She shares how her father was recently interred in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. “Everything was so organized and respectful,” she recalls. “There were no other funerals near us, even though there were several other services going on at the same time. We had a person especially assigned to our family, ready to answer any questions or handle any problems that might arise.” Julie wants the veterans and families in AseraCare Hospice to feel that same sense of respect. At AseraCare Hospice, they take a holistic approach to caring for terminally ill patients. Each patient is treated with respect, kindness, compassion, and support. By partnering with the We Honor Veterans program, AseraCare Hospice recognizes the unique needs of America’s veterans and their families. Hospice care is a Medicare benefit, and Medicaid. Most insurance companies and programs cover services and supplies related to their terminal diagnosis, such as physician services, nursing care, medical supplies, prescription drugs, and counseling. If your loved one has a lifelimiting illness (for example, cancer, Parkinson’s disease, end-stage Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, or multiple sclerosis) and is not pursuing aggressive treatment, you may be eligible for hospice services. Julie encourages you to call AseraCare Hospice to find out. “We honor our veterans!” Julie asserts. “Whenever possible, we assign veterans as volunteers to our patients. A common bond of understanding is beneficial to both the veteran-patient and the veteran-volunteer.” All nurse caregivers carry an American flag in their vehicles, so that at their death, the caregiver makes sure the body is draped in a flag and is carried out feet first. Veteran volunteers and AseraCare employees conduct pinning ceremonies together. Several of AseraCare’s veterans have even received a Quilt of Valor, which is a speciallymade quilt that honors each branch of service and the conflicts in which the veteran participated. At AseraCare Hospice, care is not just for those who are near death—caregivers also focus on the patient’s surviving family. Many times, the survivor is a spouse or an only child who does not feel prepared to carry on alone. Survivors may need counseling on everything from grief and making funeral arrangements to paying bills

18

and balancing the checkbook. These issues usually become apparent while the patient is in hospice care, which allows counselors time to give aid before it becomes an emergency. “We cater to the family while they’re going through a tough time,” Julie remarks. Rose C. testifies to this. “My husband had been in another facility before we went to AseraCare. They found a raised bed so I could help with his care, and they let his rescue dog lie on his bed. When the dog started following the caregiver around, we knew we were with the right people.” She has since used AseraCare Hospice for other family members. “They are like family now. The dog knows!” Rose asserts. AseraCare Hospice also partners with the DreamWeaver Foundation. This organization is similar to the Make-A-Wish Foundation; it has been established to allow adults in the final stages of life to experience a quality of life that otherwise might be denied them. “A patient loved to go fishing—DreamWeaver found a way to take him. Another time, DreamWeaver’s made it possible for the patient to attend a family reunion barbecue. It was a treat to see him and his family together.” Not every hospice patient has family around. Many patients have no family, or their remaining family members are also very ill. If patients have no one to be with them during their final hours, an AseraCare employee or one of AseraCare Hospice’s over 47 volunteers is available to sit, read, pray, or hold a hand. At AseraCare Hospice, the goal is that no one dies alone. Julie explains that hospice care is different from palliative care. Palliative care is more curative in nature and is focused on relieving symptoms while receiving active treatment. With hospice care, the patient is often taken off medications except those necessary for comfort and easement of pain. “We’ve had patients live for some time after being taken off non-crucial medications. Often, the patient seems more alert than when heavily medicated. It gives patients and their families a higher quality of time together at the end.” To learn more about AseraCare Hospice and the care, benefits, and programs they offer, call 402-9262680. Julie or any of the caregivers available will happily answer your questions. The office is located at 8710 Frederick Street, in Omaha. WE

Fresh Concept

Good-Bye, Wrinkles! Plump Your Skin With Dermal Fillers By Kylie Gumpert

Let’s face it—nobody likes getting a shot. However, if an injection can curb the signs of aging? Well, that’s something that nearly 10 million Americans got behind in 2017, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. It’s not just Botox, either! The anti-aging and plumping game has changed quite a bit over the years. Today, there are more than 20 different kinds of dermal filler options, including synthetic compounds as well as the materials from your own body. Let’s take a look at a few options to help you navigate the issue. First, did you know that there are two different types of wrinkles? Dynamic wrinkles are caused by muscle movements, such as smiling, frowning, and squinting. These repetitive movements create lines around the eyes, mouth, and nose, as well as on the forehead. Static wrinkles, on the other hand, are not caused by movement. They are due to a loss of elasticity in the skin that can lead to sagging jowls or cheeks that have lost their youthful fullness. If you want to address the look of dynamic wrinkles, Botox is about to be your best friend. Botox, which is short for Botulinum toxin A, is FDA-approved and is technically a neurotoxin. It works by blocking the nerve signals that tell muscles to contract—no movement, no wrinkle! There are three types of Botox formulations. The formulation affects how much of the toxin is given to a patient, how it spreads, and how long it lasts. When it comes to static wrinkles, freezing the underlying muscle isn’t going to make any difference. If you want the youthful plump you used to enjoy, what you need is a dermal filler. Fillers are all about increasing volume underneath the existing skin. There are generally five different filler types that can be injected into the skin, all of which have certain FDA-approved treatments. The filler with the most FDA-approved options is made from hyaluronic acid, which is naturally found in your skin and helps it stay hydrated. When it comes to thickness of injection material, hyaluronic fillers are on the thinner side. This means they might not last as long as other options, but the procedure itself may be more comfortable for the patient. Most of the time, patients can enjoy their new features for six months to a year. After that, the body starts to absorb the filler, and the results are diminished. FDA-approved hyaluronic acid fillers include those in the Juvéderm family (Juvéderm XC, Voluma, Volbella, and Vollure), the Restylane family (Restylane, Silk, Lyft, Refyne, and Defyne), and Belotero Balance. Depending on the filler brand and product, certain injections are created specifically for different areas of the face. For example, Juvéderm offers one hyaluronic filler meant for plumping cheeks, two meant for smoothing lines and wrinkles, and one made specifically to enhance lip size and fullness. Calcium hydroxylapatite (or CaHA, for those of us who don’t enjoy tongue twisters) is made from a naturally

20

October 2018

occurring substance found in the bones. The injection itself is thicker and is mainly used for deeper lines and wrinkles. Beyond filling, it is also meant to stimulate collagen production. That means that some patients will find that their skin is more resilient and youthful after treatment, even beyond the year of full, plump, wrinklefree skin that they can expect. There is currently just one FDA-approved CaHA treatment: Radiesse. Filler made from poly-L-lactic acid, which is also found in dissolvable stitches, is synthetic but has been deemed safe to place inside the body. Unlike other fillers, this treatment is actually absorbed by the body just a few days after it is injected. Its real function is to stimulate collagen production so that the body itself makes more, which means that results last more than two years— significantly longer than the results of other treatments. There is one FDA-approved poly-L-lactic acid treatment: Sculptra Aesthetic. Bellafill is another synthetic filler approved by the FDA. This treatment, which is made of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), contains collagen, as well. It is actually considered permanent because PMMA takes the form of tiny, microscopic spheres that do not dissipate over time. Bellafill is only approved for use around the mouth. Last, but not least, we have the longest-lasting filler option: fat injections. Fat is taken from another part of a patient’s body through liposuction and is then injected into the facial area. This treatment is more invasive than other dermal filler treatments because you must first undergo fat-harvesting surgery performed by an experienced and board-certified surgeon. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are another treatment proving to be effective at reducing wrinkles and

www.womensedition.com

age lines. Platelets contain proteins that are important for healing, so an injection that contains a condensed amount of platelets is meant to speed up healing and collagen production. For the most part, PRP is used in cases of physical injury, but some studies are finding it can be an effective way to reduce wrinkles and age lines. A 2017 study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that PRP is tolerated well by patients and leads to significant wrinkle correction, especially for laugh lines. Let’s say your “problem” isn’t so much about wrinkles. Maybe it’s under-eye dark circles, also known as tear troughs. While there are no fillers specifically made for the eye area, certain hyaluronic injections, when used carefully, can minimize or nearly eliminate the dark or sunken look. When it comes to choosing a professional to inject your filler, you should use considerable scrutiny. After all, someone is injecting something into your face that will change how you look—you want to make sure your practitioner understands how different fillers work and what will work best for you. You don’t necessarily need a board-certified plastic surgeon, but not just anybody can perform cosmetic filler injections. Rules vary from state to state. Be sure to find out what certifications potential practitioners hold and whether they have significant experience doing filler injections. As with any cosmetic procedure, you should ask to see before and after photos of patients treated by your chosen medical professional. After treatment with dermal fillers, you should expect some short-term swelling, bruising, or slight irritation. Nodules (lumps underneath the skin) are an uncommon side effect that could be caused by an allergy or infection. These can form soon after an injection or even months or years later, so this is important to keep

in mind. As always, be sure that your practitioner is aware of any allergies or medical conditions that you have, and carefully review the patient labeling information for any filler you are considering. You may have seen dermal fillers advertised for sale online. Do not buy these! First of all, only a medical professional should be administering them. Second, there is simply no way for you to know if the filler is fake or contaminated. Liquid silicone and gels are not approved by the FDA to be used as fillers. While there is no specific limit on how many filler injections a person can get, the recommended frequency depends on the product used and the location in which it was placed. For example, someone who has received a PMMA filler like Bellafill around the mouth will not need to get another one because Bellafill is permanent. Someone who gets a hyaluronic acid injection from the Restylane family of products may need another one after a year or so to maintain the new aesthetic. The last thing to keep in mind is your skin type. If your skin is relatively thin, or if it is significantly loose or hanging, fillers may not make any difference—or they may even do more harm than good. It’s important to consult with an experienced medical professional. Based on your current situation and your aesthetic goals, an option like surgery may be more appropriate or effective than dermal fillers. Now that you know the basics, talk to a medical professional about what dermal fillers can do for you! You may be a great candidate to join the growing number of Americans enjoying the youthful look they regained with dermal fillers. Dine at Spezia Truly Great Service, Truly Local Steaks By Elizabeth French

Local Italian restaurant Spezia is home not only to some of the greatest cuisine in the Omaha area, but also to some of the best staff. Operated by managing partner and head chef Brian Reilly, Spezia has employed Heather Bagshaw as a professional server since 2007 (just three years after Spezia’s grand opening!). With over 15 years of serving and hotel experience prior to her current position, Heather knew right away that she wanted to work at a fine dining establishment like Spezia. Heather appreciates the family environment that Spezia provides for its patrons and its employees. “I can’t imagine not working here,” she says. “The food is spectacular…my customers are so great, too.” Customers return the compliment by having nothing but fantastic things to say about Heather and her fellow staff. It’s no surprise that Heather is so popular—she knows her regular customers by name and even knows most of their favorite dishes! Midwest Pain Clinics Improve Your Quality of Life By Jackie Byers

You may have driven past Midwest Pain Clinics’ Omaha location, at 825 North 90th Street, without noticing that it was a medical facility. The ivy-covered building with well-maintained landscaping fits the neighborhood aesthetic and looks like an inviting home. The beautiful building actually houses a complete medical center, offering physical therapy services and a pharmacy that is open to the public. The long line of offices on the main floor includes an ambulatory surgery center, administrative offices, and various treatment and examination rooms. The practice was established 24 years ago by Dr. John E. Cook. Over the years, Midwest Pain Clinics has expanded to include two additional Nebraska locations (in Lincoln and Columbus), as well as clinics in Iowa (in Missouri Valley and Red Oak) and in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota. Currently, Dr. Cook is joined by Dr. Kevin Balter, Dr. Matthew Nadler, Dr. Richard Bose, and Dr. Rafal Krejza. Their team of nurses and physician assistants includes Ashley Homan, David Johnson, Stephanie Simon, and David A. Welch. Everything at Midwest Pain Clinics is designed to

Chronic pain can be mitigated, but it has no cure,” Dr. Nadler acknowledges. “We help those suffering from either kind of pain. Good Looks

The Rainbow After the Rain Reclaiming Your Sense of Self Post-Cancer

By Loretta McCollum

Surviving cancer requires strength, determination, and faith. This disease robs us of more than just our health. It alters our physical appearance, makes us question our femininity, and shakes our self-worth. We wonder if we will ever feel whole again. The good news is that there are more choices than ever to help women rediscover themselves during and after cancer treatment. Reconstructive surgery, permanent makeup and tattoos, and custom hairpieces are just a few of the ways to restore the body and renew the spirit. Hair loss can be one of the most devastating side effects of cancer treatment. Those long locks eventually grow back, but try rocking a shorter style in the meantime. If that’s not for you, consider a wig—they have come a long way from what you might be thinking. They are more comfortable than ever before and are available in a variety of materials and styles. Many insurance companies will cover part, if not all, of the cost; check with your own insurance provider for specifics. Synthetic wigs come in a multitude of colors and styles. They are affordable, low-maintenance, and feel much like natural hair. Color selection is basically unlimited, including many non-traditional colors. A monofilament wig looks very natural. Each hair in this type of wig is hand-sewn into a monofilament mesh, making it easy to part and style. Wigs made from human hair, although more costly, allow you to closely match the color and texture of

your natural hair. They also provide maximum styling versatility. Consult with a stylist to determine the best choice for you. As a matter of fact, if you are considering getting a wig, an early visit to a stylist is a good idea. You want your stylist to be familiar with your natural hair to ensure a good color and texture match. This preliminary step can go a long way toward easing your mind later on. Many salons offer complimentary consultations, allowing you to “test drive” several wig options. They can also suggest styling products, discuss possible scalp issues and how to treat them, and provide instructions on caring for your wig. Many local salons participate in an American Cancer Society program through which they will fit you with a hairpiece and style it to your specifications. Some consultations may also include skin, nail, and color analysis. Don’t want to maintain a wig? No problem. Hats, turbans, and ›››

scarves are fun alternatives with limitless possibilities. They’re extremely versatile and affordable. Some hats even come with built-in bangs or sewn-in hairpieces. Turbans protect your head from the sun’s rays, and style options abound—they can be easily accessorized with your favorite pin or other piece of jewelry. A scarf can be used as a full or partial head covering, with a plethora of styling techniques. A stylist can work with you on options. Let’s not forget about those small areas of missing hair. Following chemotherapy, eyebrows typically do not grow back. Tattooing and permanent makeup are two restoration options. Permanent makeup is considered a non-surgical procedure. An anesthetic cream is applied to the skin, and then pigment is inserted into the dermis through a needle. These pigment molecules are smaller than the ink molecules inserted into the skin during the tattooing process, which means that the pigment will eventually fade, while the tattoo provides permanent color. The permanent makeup technique allows for a wider tint variation. Microblading is one of the latest trends to restore a youthful and natural look to the face. Microblading restores the brows to their original shape and look, by applying semi-permanent makeup and stroking individual looking hairs onto the skin. A professional artist can advise clients about the best options for their needs. Women who have had mastectomies often feel as if a portion of their womanhood was taken along with their breast. Of course, a woman is more than her breasts, but it can still feel like a robbery. Thankfully, there are multiple options to help restore a sense of femininity. Breast forms that include areola and nipple detail can be used with regular bras. Most are made of silicone and appear quite natural. Many women opt for breast reconstruction surgery, using either silicone implants or tissue transplanted from another part of the body. Three-dimensional nipple and areola tattoos can complete the reconstruction process for an especially natural look. Some patients choose a more artistic approach with tattoos, turning their surgical scars into whimsical works of art. Having made it through one of life’s toughest chapters, all of us who undergo cancer treatment deserve to feel good about ourselves. Income Outcome

We Conquer Ourselves Breaking Through Your Illusionary Limits I have had several occasions where I have had to deal with a particular individual in business situations. I was discussing that person’s typical response with a friend of mine when he commented that it sounded like the kind of person who, after events occur, often says, “What happened?” I thought that was interesting and probably accurate. That associate has never seemed very proactive nor willing to take on any risks. “There are three categories of people in industry: the few who make things happen, the many who watch things happen, and the overwhelming majority who have no idea what happened." —O. A. Battista That sort of person won’t be the best contributor to any organization and, in fact, will slow the success of an organization. Anyone who isn’t a sail is an anchor; instead of moving things along, they drag everyone down. “What holds so many employees back is an unwillingness to pay the price, to make the extertion, and the effort to sacrifice their ease and comfort.” —Orison Marden Some folks appear to have lost their zest for life. They seem to be going through the motions without enthusiasm, excitement,

By Janet Van deWalle

or joy. They definitely don’t seem to be having very much fun. Sometimes, we just feel so beaten up by life, and we don’t feel enough support around us. Sometimes, we just feel like coasting. “Far too many people sit back and coast just when they should be moving to the edge of their seats and hitting the accelerator.” —Les Brown The worst thing about coasting is that it can become a very comfortable habit of living. If it becomes comfortable, we start overvaluing things like “safety” and “security.” The worst thing about valuing these illusions is that we stop taking risks, we stop setting bigger and better goals, we stop having great visions for our great life. It is so important to realize that the limits you experience are also illusions. There probably are no real limits for you to experience in your career, your relationships, your social life, your overall quality of life. However, if you don’t take risks, then you can’t get to that special moment when you experience the joy and thrill of breaking through your illusionary limits—your fears, doubts, and worries— and create your life the way you truly want it to be. You can conquer this, but only if you are willing to make the exertion and the effort to sacrifice your ease and comfort. You must gather your courage, set your sights on your goals, conquer your limitations, and succeed. WE

Planning Ahead Doesn’t Always Work Give ’Em a Break Do you ever feel like you take two steps back for every step you take forward? It’s frustrating! I try to plan ahead. I do everything I think is necessary to get a task done. Then, something out of my control happens, and I fall behind. For example: Last spring, there were several maintenance projects I wanted to accomplish before summer came and it got too hot. I talked to my Lawn Guy about weeding and feeding and seeding the yard. He agreed. I mentioned to my Handy Man that I wanted to get the house and deck painted. He said he could do that. Prices for both jobs were agreed upon, and I bought the necessary materials. Everything was stored where they had access. So far, I was ahead of the game. Then, I went out of town for a couple of weeks, and the weather turned unseasonably hot while I was gone. The grass turned brown from thirst. Oops! I’d forgotten to have the sprinkler system turned on. Lawn Guy called and suggested not applying the weed/feed/seed because it wouldn’t take without water. Good idea. Handy Man got started painting, but it was so hot that the paint was drying almost before the brush touched the wood. Not good. That job also got postponed. I have a “go with the flow” kind of attitude. Don’t worry about things you have no control over. If you can do something about it, do it. If not, don’t worry about it. Weather is going to happen! I got the sprinkler system turned on as soon as I got

home...and then we had a period of serious rain. Handy Man couldn’t paint wet wood, and there’s no way to keep the rain from hitting the house, short of erecting a dome over it. The project had to be put back on hold. Lawn Guy had a family emergency to deal with, so the lawn project was also put on hold again. Now, I’m sitting here with two major projects unfinished. Lawn Guy has kept up with mowing, but the weed, feed, and seed directions said it should be applied either in the cool of the spring or the cool of the fall, so we’ll have to wait until the weather cooperates. Handy Man got part of the painting done before he, too, was distracted by a family emergency. It’s out of my hands. I just hope it all gets done this fall. What does this have to do with kids? They also make plans that fall apart through no fault of their own. When that happens, parents sometimes get mad and yell about sticking to the job. Take a look, though. Was there really anything they could have done differently? Did they learn from their mistakes? (I did!) Talk to them. Remember, kids are people, too. Give ’em a break. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Soothe Yourself Healthy Hobbies Improve Well-Being

By Robyn V. Powell

Between work, family, and a to-do list that never ends, life’s busy demands can sometimes feel overwhelming. One of the best ways to restore your sense of balance and improve well-being is to take up an enjoyable hobby. Research confirms that tapping into our creativity boosts positive mental health, provides an opportunity for mindfulness, encourages us to socialize, and combats cognitive decline. Autumn is the perfect time to try a new indoor hobby, like crafting. With cold weather just around the corner, get set to unplug and have some fun! In an era where hands are used primarily for swiping screens, we’ve lost touch with the benefits of tactile sensation. It’s no wonder that shaping things by hand has become one of the most popular trends in crafting—whether it’s working with soft, silky modeling clay or with malleable concrete that can be kneaded like dough, shaped without a mold, and dried without being fired in an oven. Our grandmothers understood the cathartic benefits of using our hands, as well as the social benefits of group projects. Through sewing circles and quilting parties, women connected with others in the community while busying their hands making the necessities of life. Our mechanized society may have eliminated the need to make things by hand, but our minds still crave the well-being found in meaningful effort. Quilting has made a real comeback. Today’s quilts are quirky and modern, are

often made from unusual fabrics, and are as ideal for snuggling as for decorating a wall. Quilts keep you warm, look great on a bed or sofa, and make a wonderful and personal gift. Sewing begins with mastering the basics. As with any project, you should start small and build upon each skill. When paired with fun fabrics, beginner projects such as tote bags and throw pillows can be so chic and elegant that no one will know they were made by a beginner. Once you’ve mastered the basics, you are on your way to more challenging projects made easy with today’s high-tech machines. With the rise of wearable technology, fabrics are being combined with lights, sensors, and circuits that transform clothing into computers. If you don’t own a sewing machine, you can sign up for classes at your local sewing store to learn everything from sewing basics to advanced techniques. ›››

Many of our most treasured holiday ornaments and gifts are those made by hand—especially by the hands of children. Creating and giving holiday decorations and gifts is a terrific way to put everyone in the holiday spirit. The idea of creating something out of nothing but a little imagination and lots of love is what gift giving is all about. Handmade gifts are fun for the maker and special for the recipient. Items like cinnamonscented tree ornaments and holiday keepsakes are sure to be cherished by parents, relatives, and friends. Handmade invitations, stationery, and cards are fun and easy to make. For ideas and know-how, visit your local craft stores. Use your imagination to come up with one-of-a-kind greeting cards. The beautiful art of calligraphy has become one of the most popular hobbies among children and adults and can take creating greeting cards to the next level, making them even more personal and special. Home decorating projects are a fun way to give your space a fresh look. Breathing new life into old furniture by refinishing or painting has become a popular trend. Transform a dated dining hutch into a cheerful gardening station with colorful chalk or milk paint. Take design a step further by adding a pattern through stenciling or by using paint pens to draw designs on drawer fronts or tabletops. Create a gallery wall by arranging artwork or photos. Secondhand stores are treasure troves for finding unique frames that can be painted in fun colors. Stencil or hand-paint a tree on a blank wall and hang family photos on the branches for a whimsical family tree. Crafts can enrich your life and the lives of others. One of the best things about crafting is that it is multigenerational. Get your kids or grandkids involved in projects you can work on together after school or on weekends. Drop by your local crafting stores to see free demos, try new products or techniques, and sign up for classes. Crafting isn’t about producing something perfect. It’s about discovering the fun that can be had from tapping into one’s own creativity and the joy and satisfaction that comes with an end result that’s original and uniquely personal. Take some time out each week for yourself and your hobbies and feel empowered, excited, and recharged. Beau Joyau A Modern Shopping Experience By Loretta McCollum

With the popularity of online shopping showing no signs of slowing down, brick-and-mortar businesses are exploring innovative ways to draw consumers out of their living rooms and into local shops. Today’s shoppers want a comprehensive, memorable in-store experience, with one-on-one personal attention from a knowledgeable stylist. Women also want stores to carry clothing, jewelry, accessories, and gift items that are high in quality and are not what everyone else is wearing. Does such a store exist? Look no further than Beau Joyau, an upscale lifestyle accessories boutique near Rockbrook Village. Beau Joyau (that’s French for “beautiful jewel”) is an intimate, elegant boutique offering carefully curated items, from pearls to plaids, from pullovers to pottery—even popcorn! Walking into the store, the attention to detail is obvious. You’re surrounded by meticulously coordinated and uncluttered clothing displays, tasteful artwork, a plush and inviting seating area in the center of the store, sparkling jewelry displays, and multiple racks of hand-painted, imported Polish pottery. Owner Pamela Huerta was a critical care nurse in Detroit before she left that profession to focus on raising her family. After moving to Nebraska, Pamela wanted to find new ways to use her people skills. While visiting Poland, her sister discovered beautiful Polish pottery, manufactured in Boleslawiec, Poland, and suggested that Pamela import and sell it in Nebraska. Impressed with its quality, durability, and beauty, Pamela selectively chose specific stoneware pieces to be sold out of her garage for 12 years. It remains a staple at Beau Joyau. “Everything is handpainted, contains no lead, and is made the same way today as it was in the 1700s,” she explains. “It’s practical art that you can use every day.” Keeping the pottery and expanding into clothing and accessories, Beau Joyau opened at its current location in 2015 and carries items you simply won’t find at other Omaha stores. When buying for Beau Joyau, Pamela asks vendors if they sell to other Omaha retailers. If the answer is yes, she politely passes, stressing the importance of unique offerings as part of her success. She carries classic styles with a bit of an edge, geared toward ladies 30 years and older. If you need alterations, you’re in luck—they offer them in-house. The designer jewelry collection at Beau Joyau includes limited edition pieces, as well as some designed in-house by one of Pamela’s associates. Her travel jewelry collection allows clients to wear beautiful pieces at a fraction of the cost of genuine

Owner Pamela Huerta stones. Quality manufacturing makes it difficult to distinguish these pieces from the real thing, and most cost under $100. Items in the trend collection represent current looks at low prices. Beau Joyau was also the first Omaha retailer to carry Sugarfina confections from Beverly Hills, California. Who doesn’t want to snack on gummy bears made with Dom Perignon or munch on dark chocolate sea salt caramel popcorn? The customer service at Beau Joyau is also topnotch. “You can still transform a life, just in a different way,” Pamela says when comparing nursing to being a stylist. Pamela and her associates frequently sit down with clients over coffee, water, or wine to discuss their needs. She asks questions like, “What made you come in today?” Before clients make their final selections, she asks them if they’re comfortable with their choices. She wants her clients to leave feeling better than when they came in, and she makes it a habit to always walk clients to the door. These happy clients sing Pamela’s praises. One client says, “She is delightful, and just fun! Beau Joyau is a nice find, and people should absolutely come!” Annette Everheart-Brown says that Beau Joyau’s “pricing is very reasonable, and the customer service is excellent. I have bought many items here, and I’m still wearing things I purchased here three years ago! I do most of my shopping here.” Great customer service doesn’t end at the door, either. In-home style consultations are available. The store also brings in speakers for life coaching, clean eating, and other uplifting and relevant topics for women. Fashion shows are held twice per year. According to Pamela, returning clients are among the many rewards of her business. “When you lift others up, you are lifted up.” On advice for other women, she quickly responds, “It’s never too late to do what you want; just go for it! If you have a desire for something, be positive, find strength, and don’t pay attention to negativity.” Beau Joyau’s success is proof that this approach has served Pamela well. Fall Deep Cleaning Make Your Home Sparkle for Holiday Guests

By Anne Yankus

It may seem like it’s a little soon to think about winter holidays, but it’s never too early to start prepping the house for holiday guests. You’ll want to put your best foot forward with a deep fall cleaning of floors, walls, bathrooms—the works! First and foremost, you’ll want to get all your carpet and rugs cleaned. Carpet manufacturers generally recommend a professional steam cleaning every 12–18 months. Check with different companies to see what kinds of chemicals they use, if any, especially if you have kids or pets who will be down on the rug. For hard flooring, it’s also a great idea to have a professional come in and do a deep clean at least once a year, and what better time than after your family and pets have been running in from the yard all summer, tracking dirt and who knows what else? If your floors are in good condition, a good cleaning will do the job (make sure that special attention is paid to high-traffic areas). However, if they are looking worn, it might be time for professional refinishing. The next item on the cleaning list is walls. Over time, walls can get dusty, especially if you run an ultrasonic humidifier during the winter. Walls should be dusted carefully so as not to harm the finished surfaces. In the kitchen, the walls (as well as the cabinets) may develop greasy buildup from cooking.

Professional housecleaners will have the know-how and the tools to remove buildup without damaging the finish of your cabinets and walls. If your walls still look dingy or faded after they’re clean, it may be time for a new paint job. You’ll be amazed by how quickly a team of professional painters can get the job done—and by how quickly they can clean up! A pro paint job is often well worth the higher price point (compared to doing it yourself) because of how much you save in time and hassle. After getting your floors and walls spruced up, you’ll want to turn your focus to your bathroom—specifically, the grout. Due to its porous nature, grout can actually become dirtier as you mop or clean it. If your grout is looking dingy even though you keep the tile clean, a professional bathroom cleaner can bring it back to life. A pro can also determine if you have mold or mildew ›››

growing underneath your grout (check for discoloration or a distinct smell). If the grout is significantly cracked or deteriorating, it’s time to have the tile re-grouted. A part of your house that may or may not need cleaning is your air ducts. The EPA recommends getting your ducts cleaned only if there is visible mold growth inside the ducts, if ducts are infested with vermin, or if the ducts are so clogged with dust and debris that particulate is being released through the vents into your home. A duct cleaning company can identify these issues. It is recommended that you first fix the source of the problem and then have the ducts professionally cleaned. Something else that should definitely be put on your list is window cleaning. By all means, give your windows a once-over with a bottle of Windex and a rag inside the house, if you’d rather do it yourself. For the exterior, it’s best to hire a pro. In addition to saving time and not having to climb a ladder, a professional window cleaner can also help identify problems with your windows, signs of insect infestation, and the cause of spots on the windows. If your home has a fireplace with a chimney, regular chimney cleaning is a must. It protects your family from accidental fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. The right person for this job is a professional chimney sweep. You’ll definitely want to make sure your chimney sweep is certified through the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA). After taking care of all those big projects, general cleaning probably sounds exhausting! Why not hire a cleaning service for the rest of the little stuff? There are many excellent timesaving cleaning services to be found online or through recommendations from friends and neighbors. Services can clean just once or on a regular basis. Once the house is clean, take a look around. Do your decorative items need to match a new paint color? Do you need some new linens to put on that shiny, clean table? Nothing goes better with freshly cleaned windows than new drapes. The sky is the limit for freshening up your house before you show it off to holiday guests! Education, Early Detection, and Treatment for Breast Cancer

By Connie Keck

One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Each year, it is estimated that over 250,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and that more than 40,000 will die. However, the number of women who die of breast cancer has steadily decreased over the last 30 years, thanks to early detection and treatment improvements. Today, over 3.3 million breast cancer survivors are alive in the United States. While statistics are valuable, it’s important to note that they are only averages. Each person’s individual risk of death from breast cancer depends on many factors, including the size of the tumor, the number of lymph nodes that contain cancer, how quickly the tumor grows, and how well the treatments work. It’s also important to remember that breast cancer is not the same for everyone— there may even be genetic differences within a single tumor. Open dialogue with your healthcare team is important to understand your diagnosis and treatment options. The best first step is to advocate for your own breast health. Are you doing self-examinations of your breasts? Are you getting a yearly mammogram? Have you noticed changes in your breasts recently? Have there been any changes in how the breasts or nipples look or feel? Has there been any clear or bloody discharge from the nipples? This is all information that you need to share with your healthcare provider. In some instances, your provider may

want to conduct additional tests, which may include an ultrasound, an MRI, blood tests, or a biopsy. Treatment strategies are not all the same; they depend heavily on the type of cancer and the stage of the cancer. Your provider may refer to the TNM system for breast cancer staging: T refers to tumor size, N refers to lymph node status (the number and location of lymph nodes with cancer), and M refers to metastasis (whether or not the cancer has spread to other parts of the body). Early detection of cancer is crucial for diagnostic testing and treatment choices, and researchers are learning new things about treatment all the time. The National Cancer Institute recently published new findings from a groundbreaking trial known as Trial Assigning Individualized Options for Treatment (Rx), or TAILORx. In their June 2018 press release, they note that the findings “show no benefit from chemotherapy for 70 percent of women with the most common type of breast cancer. The study found that for women with hormone-receptor (HR)-positive, HER2negative, axillary lymph node–negative breast cancer, treatment with chemotherapy and hormone therapy after surgery is not more

beneficial than treatment with hormone therapy alone.” This new information will undoubtedly influence treatment for many women who have this type of cancer in its early stages. Another diagnostic test, the Oncotype DX breast cancer test, is for women who have been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer (invasive or DSIC [noninvasive]). This unique genomic test, as described on MyBreastCancerTreatment. org, “looks at the activity of certain genes in your breast tumor tissue to provide personalized information that can help you and your doctor tailor treatment to your individual cancer. This pioneering genomic test was developed to eliminate the ‘onesize-fits-all’ approach to cancer treatment that often leads to the over-treatment or under-treatment of early-stage breast cancer.” Some people with cancer will only have one treatment, but most people undergo a combination of treatments, such as surgery combined with chemotherapy or radiation therapy. You may also have immunotherapy, targeted therapy, or hormone therapy. Alternative cancer treatments may not play a direct role in curing your cancer, but they may help you cope with side effects from treatments or associated symptoms, such as anxiety, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, pain, difficult sleeping, and stress. Beyond the medical and surgical components of cancer care, living a healthy lifestyle is also extremely important. Take control of your breast cancer journey! Incorporating healthy choices into your daily life can help improve your body’s ability to fight disease. Weight loss is one of the most important lifestyle changes to make. Talk with your doctor about a healthy weight goal and find ways to integrate physical activity into your current lifestyle. Minimizing alcohol intake, quitting smoking, and taking vitamins tailored to your needs are all shown to improve the odds of success when fighting disease. Vitamin D, in particular, is a valuable nutrient to take daily through a supplement. Check with your doctor about other vitamins that may be beneficial to you. Don’t be afraid to ask for support! Talk with other women and find out what support resources are available in your community. The only good thing about breast cancer being so common is that it means you’re not alone on this journey. An Inside Look

Good Planning Starts with Goals Great Planning Starts with Blazek Estate Planning By Elizabeth French

With the mantra, “all good planning starts with goals,” Omaha native Jim Blazek knew from a young age that his goal was to become an attorney. His success, he says, can be attributed to some “happy accidents.” One of these was getting to know Creighton professor Barbara Pearlman, who pushed Jim to know all the ins and outs of estate and tax law by constantly calling on him for answers. In 1981, after Jim graduated from Creighton School of Law, he established Blazek Estate Planning. Another happy accident is Jim’s partner, Jared Gregg. An attorney from Ogallala, Jared has now been with the firm for nine years. According to Jim, he complements the firm because “he was doing estate planning for farmers and ranchers long before he met me.” A unique aspect of Blazek Estate Planning is that they specialize in estate planning only. Rather than diversifying their services, the firm is dedicated to the production of quality documents to serve future generations. Offering estate planning creation, maintenance, and administration, Blazek Estate Planning specializes in only this area, ensuring that every “t” will be crossed and every “i” will be dotted. “Planning changes during the different seasons of our lives,” Jim notes. “A great tragedy is that people will start out with a plan and then never update it.” Large life events like marriage, parenthood, or significant accrual of wealth can change a person’s estate planning needs drastically. Being cognizant of life changes, of important updates, and of how your estate planning documents should grow with you is crucial to ensuring that you get precisely the protection that you need. Many clients first come in for simple wills. This is what Jim refers to as the “starter will,” which makes sense for people who primarily want to name guardians for their minor children. However, for those with over $500,000 in assets, Jim recommends setting up a revocable living trust, rather than a will based plan, because it can better protect assets over time. Unlike typical estate planning, which plans for the division of assets, putting assets in trust can protect the assets for future generations and protects them from anyone outside the intended beneficiaries. For example, Jim says, “if I die and my wife remarries, what can I do to make sure my assets go to my kids and not somebody else?” Living trusts and proper estate planning ensure the protection of assets, especially when a family member remarries. Trusts use a series of protective strategies that have an impact on succeeding generations. “That’s what’s really cool about better

estate planning,” Jim says. “You can affect multiple generations.” Jim tries to “foresee the main ways that people lose money and plan against those things.” When he initially sits down with clients, Jim stresses that all planning starts with goals. “It’s the attorney’s job to assess what the client’s goals are, because people have different goals. Some people want to come in and talk about disability or how to handle probate or capital gains tax planning. They’ll have multiple issues when they come in.” In some cases, he notes, clients need his help to discover what their goals really are. “It’s my job to identify those goals and figure out the best way of meeting them.” “Everybody loves Monday” at Blazek Estate Planning, Jim shares. The three attorneys and five support staff members will be relocating to a larger space in the coming months. Their newest attorney is Jim’s son, Paul Blazek. Paul is pleased to be following in his father’s footsteps at a firm that innovates on traditional strategies, provides a personal paralegal for each trust client, and even conducts phone calls with clients at no extra charge. “When we give our clients good value, then we all win,” Jim says, and that supports his “everybody wins” mentality. He and his firm are proud to maintain relationships with families from one generation to the next. The most rewarding aspect of Jim’s job is how his clients feel about the results they get from the firm. When clients walk out the door, saying, “This was so easy,” it makes the long days worthwhile. “It’s a lot of fun, and it’s very rewarding,” Jim concludes. “We have clients who we’ve enjoyed years of relationships with, and so it’s just a very fulfilling, rewarding career.” Has your life changed recently? Has your estate plan changed with it? If you are newly married, have recently had children, are gathering wealth, or simply need to consult with an expert in tax law, contact Blazek Estate Planning today by calling 402-496-3432 or visiting blazekandgregg.com. The Biggest and Best Investing in the S&P 500

By George Morgan

Stock market indexes were developed to give the public a sense of which direction the market is headed. The oldest market index is the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which was first published in 1897. At that time, it consisted of 13 railroad stocks. Every weekday afternoon, news of the Dow was distributed in a flyer to financial types working in downtown Manhattan. Several decades later, that flyer became The Wall Street Journal. It was not until 1957 that the next major market index, the S&P 500, was developed and offered for general consumption. Participants in 401(k) plans are faced with the daunting task of choosing where to invest their retirement dollars from a list of mutual funds provided by their employer. Most of these people have no investment education or experience, and yet the growth of their retirement account depends on how well they choose their funds. They need a solution that is simple, low-maintenance, cost-effective, and reasonably safe. That solution is an S&P 500 index fund. An index fund is a mutual fund that replicates a specific index. It accomplishes this by buying and holding all the stocks in that index in the same proportion as they are in the index. It does not time the market by buying and selling its holdings to enhance investment performance. Compare this to conventional, actively managed mutual funds, where a money manager trades stocks to “beat the market.” This frequent trading is costly and sometimes counterproductive. Studies show that, in the long run, actively managed mutual funds underperform the market, while the index funds match the market. There are several elements that make the S&P 500 unique and, thus, a good fit for many 401(k) participants. The stocks that are included in the S&P 500 are chosen by a formula that considers various financial data points. Such things as profit levels, total sales, market cap, and number of employees are used to determine which stocks to include in the index. The result is a list of the 500 biggest and best publicly traded companies in the United States. When a company’s financial attributes decline and it falls below the index standards, that company is removed from the index. The net impact is that the companies used to calculate the S&P 500 are the biggest and the best that the nation has to offer. They represent 85 percent of the market’s total value of $26 trillion. The S&P 500 is a market cap weighted index. A market cap is simply the number of shares outstanding multiplied by the share price. What this means is that the biggest companies in the index have the most influence over the index. For example, Apple has a market cap of $800 billion and has a weighting of 4.37. So, when Apple has a good day, the index tends to have a good day. Stocks numbered 400 to 500 on the S&P 500 list have a weighting of less than one. So, when they have a bad day but Apple has a good

50

October 2018

day, the market still tends to go up. We all remember our parents telling us “don’t put all your eggs in one basket,” and that can be very good advice, so long as you understand how it relates to investment. Many 401(k) plan participants are reluctant to put all their 401(k) dollars in an S&P 500 index fund because, in their mind, the fund is one single investment. This is not the case— shareholders of an S&P 500 index fund own shares of each one of the 500 companies on the list. The calculation of the Dow Jones Industrial Average includes the dividends paid by companies in the index; the calculation of the S&P 500 does not. Historically, the dividend return on the S&P 500 is in the 3 percent range. When you own an S&P 500 index fund, you own stock in all 500 companies. You are therefore eligible to receive those dividends on a quarterly basis, which enhances your investment return. Most index funds are set up so that when the dividend dollars are paid, they are automatically reinvested in your mutual fund. When you invest your dividends when the market is going down, you are buying at discounted prices. That’s my advice: Put your 401(k) dollars in an S&P 500 index fund. But if you won’t take investment advice from me, will you take it from Warren Buffett? He has left instructions for the people dealing with his estate after his death to put his wife’s money in an S&P 500 index fund. That’s a pretty strong endorsement! Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. To determine which investments may be appropriate for you, consult your financial advisor prior to investing. WE

Osteoporosis Prevention and Treatment of Bone Loss

By Linda Barnes

If you think of bones as solid, you may be surprised to learn that the interior of healthy bone, magnified, looks like honeycomb. The body constantly replenishes bone that is lost through natural processes. If replacement keeps pace with bone loss, bones stay strong, but many factors can upset this critical balance. Too much bone loss (or too little new growth) causes the honeycomb to become too porous, a bone disease known as osteoporosis. Spaces become larger, resulting in loss of density and strength. This usually goes unnoticed because it doesn’t cause symptoms… until a fracture occurs. Though osteoporosis can strike men, women (particularly those who have gone through menopause) are at the highest risk. Of the estimated 10 million Americans with osteoporosis, about 8 million of those are women. Half of all women older than 50 years will experience a bone fracture due to osteoporosis. That is a stunning number! Why are older women at such greater risk of this disease? First, females tend to have smaller frames and thinner bones than males. Also, estrogen is an important part of keeping bones healthy, and the production of that vital hormone declines precipitously at menopause. Fortunately, many strategies can reduce or even reverse bone loss. Although some factors, like gender, age, build, and genetics, are beyond our control, the choices we make can also affect our risk. mass reaches its peak when people are in their 20s, so young people can greatly influence their risk for future bone loss by making bonehealthy lifestyle choices. Weight-bearing exercise and good nutrition (including calcium and vitamin D) are of huge benefit. Excessive alcohol or tobacco use can be avoided. The stronger our bones are to begin with, the better. If you’ve reached age 50 without any effort toward maintaining bone health, have become more sedentary, or have certain medical conditions, you may be at considerable risk for bone loss. Medical conditions like celiac disease, autoimmune issues, cancer, and liver or kidney disease increase risk. Medications like cortisone or prednisone can be detrimental to bone health, as can Prilosec and Zoloft. Weightloss surgery, hyperthyroidism, and blood disorders increase risk, as well, along with diminished estrogen levels. To determine bone health, a simple, safe, and painless test using

www.womensedition.com

enhanced x-ray technology is used. Called DEXA, this procedure is done with little preparation and without anesthesia. You lie on a padded table as a scanner passes over part of your body, typically focusing on the hip and spine. After the 15-minute procedure, you can resume normal activities. DEXA determines bone density and is sometimes ordered when a fracture occurs without the normal degree of trauma. If you are at higher risk of bone loss, your doctor may order the test at age 60, even if you have not had a fracture. For those without a history of fracture and few risk factors, bone density scans are recommended at age 65. The test is generally repeated at two-year intervals, but the recommended interval depends on risk factors, the strength of bones, and whether you are undergoing treatment. I found out following a DEXA scan that I have some bone loss but not to the degree of osteoporosis. If you’re in the same boat, your physician will likely encourage you to get more calcium and vitamin D in your diet, through food choices or over-the-counter supplements.Your physician will also likely encourage you to do more weight-bearing exercise and more strengthening exercise. You’ll be asked numerous questions about medications, tobacco or alcohol use, and any family history that might explain bone loss. What if it is osteoporosis? You’ll want a physician who specializes in its treatment. With concurrent medical issues, you could be referred to an endocrinologist or a rheumatologist, who will want to determine what underlying factors may be contributing to bone loss. Diabetes, hypothyroidism, kidney disease, or rheumatoid arthritis may be affecting bone health. Other professionals may join your team as you strive to reduce bone loss and strengthen remaining bone. A personal trainer or physical therapist might devise an exercise program that will be effective but considers the weakened state of your bones. A nutritionist may provide expert assistance with your diet and help determine the amount of supplements you need. Medications can help by slowing bone loss or by stimulating new bone growth. The goal is to prevent fractures. Medications such as Fosamax or Boniva are taken by mouth. Others are administered by injection. There is hope for all of us, including those who are young enough and healthy enough to reduce their future risk and those of us past menopause who must take extra measures to keep bone loss to a minimum. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle—Resell! The Benefits of Consignment Shopping

By Leslie Byrne

If you run into a friend who’s sporting an amazing designer purse or jacket, don’t be surprised to learn that it was purchased at a consignment shop. Shopping for resale items at consignment shops is growing in popularity. Fashionistas are always on the lookout for stylish or classic items for their wardrobes or their homes. According to the 2018 resale report on ThredUp.com, the resale market will reach $41 billion by 2022. Last year, 44 million women shopped secondhand, and it is becoming a lifestyle for many people. In short, a consignment shop sells items that belong to other people. Some consignment stores buy items from the owners at an agreed-upon price when the items are brought into the store. More commonly, the store puts the items on the salesfloor for a certain amount of time (weeks or months, usually) and then keeps a percentage of the sale price whenever the item is sold. In that case, the original owner of the item is not paid until the item sells. The most common items sold on consignment are clothing and furniture, but consignment shops may sell a wide variety of items. Many shops specialize in a particular niche and may limit themselves to selling items of only certain brands or particular designers. Some shops may specialize in items for a certain age group or style, like professional women’s clothing or children’s clothing.

Everyone benefits from consignment shopping—the seller, the buyer, and the consignment shop. Sellers, of course, get money for items that they no longer plan to use. To be successful at selling your items on consignment, make sure that your items are clean and in good condition. If a particular shop isn’t interested in what you bring in, don’t take it personally. They know their customers, and they know what they’ll be able to resell. If you are new to selling items on consignment, be sure to ask questions. How will they price your items? What percentage do they take, or will they buy the items from you today? How long do they keep your items? How will you know when your items sell? What happens to your items if they don’t sell? These are all good questions to ask, and shop owners will be happy to explain the process. There are also advantages to shopping at a consignment

www.womensedition.com

store. For someone who always wants that one-of-a-kind item that no one else has, who wants to stay on top of high-end fashion without breaking the bank, or who enjoys the freedom of changing wardrobes often, consignment is a great option. One unique benefit of consignment shopping is environmental, and that is something millennial shoppers are demanding. Clothing is the second biggest polluting industry worldwide (second only to petroleum). When you buy an item on consignment, you are keeping that item out of a landfill. Lastly, don’t forget the thrill of the find! Sure, it takes a little longer than grabbing a shirt off the rack at a department store, but searching for and then finding that perfect piece is a very satisfying way to shop. The benefits for the consignment shop include being able to sell merchandise without fronting the money for all the inventory in the store. Shop owners often establish long-term, personal relationships with their customers. Many times, they will identify items they know some of their regular customers would love or are looking for and reach out to them before displaying items on the salesfloor. I have been both a seller and a buyer in consignment, and my experiences have been very positive. When I was newly married, I fell in love with a maple kitchen table with black chairs that I couldn’t afford to buy. By the time I had the funds I needed, the set was no longer being manufactured. However, a few years later, I found the table and chairs in a consignment shop and purchased them used for a very reasonable price. My experience as a seller was in central Nebraska, when I cleaned out my mother’s house. There was a consignment store in a nearby town. They came to the house and picked up the furniture. A few months later, I received a check in the mail for my percentage of the proceeds. It could not have been any easier, and I was able to get some cash for furniture that would otherwise have been taken to a landfill. If you’re looking to update your wardrobe or home, or if you need to make some space for new things, give consignment a try. It saves money, it’s good for the environment, and it’s fun! Screeching to a Halt What You Need to Know About Brakes By Brennan Hallock

When you think about it, it’s really the brakes that turn an out-of-control speed machine into a vehicle that is safe to drive. Brakes have saved innumerable lives, including yours, which is why it is critical to maintain them. Because the brakes are such a vital component of your vehicle, it’s important to have them maintained by a professional mechanic. What you need to know, as the vehicle’s owner and driver, is how brakes work and how to identify when they’re not working properly. There are two primary types of brakes, and your vehicle could have either one of them. Disc brakes consist of a disc brake rotor (attached to your wheel) and a caliper that is able to clamp down on the rotor. Brake pads, which are attached to the caliper, create friction against the rotor and slow the turning of the wheel, much how brakes typically work on a bicycle. Drum brakes involve a circular drum that is attached to the wheel and houses brake shoes. These shoes press out against the inside of the drum, creating friction and slowing down the vehicle. Because brakes use friction as the primary method of slowing a vehicle, they are constantly being worn down. This is why it is important to have them inspected regularly. A brake inspection involves checking each individual part of the brake system. This includes the brake pedal, brake fluid,

brake lines and hoses, and the brake assemblies (whether they are disc or drum brakes). Most cars should have their tires rotated about every six months, and that is a good time to have the brakes inspected, as well. It is difficult to determine exactly how long your brakes will last because it depends on many factors, including how often and how hard you tend to brake. If you are driving mostly in urban areas, where you are speeding up and slowing down a lot, your brakes will wear out much faster than if you are doing a lot of highway driving at steady speeds. Some cars have electronic wear indicators that will tell you when it is time to replace your brake pads. Whether your car has this feature or not, it’s smart to pay attention to signs that your brakes are wearing down. If your brake

pedal pulsates when you press on it, it could mean you have a worn or warped disc. If you hear a grating, screeching sound when you press on the brake pedal (or even when you’re not braking), this likely means the brake pad has worn all the way through and you are now pushing metal against metal when you brake. If this is the case, you need to replace your brake pads immediately. If your brakes are wearing down but not damaged, the signs are more subtle. As the brake pads wear out, it will gradually take more pressure on the brake pedal to stop the car. You’ll feel this as having to push the pedal farther toward the floor. This is usually a very slow process, so you may not even notice that it is going farther down. If you do notice a change, call your mechanic. In addition to brake pads, brake fluid is an essential part of the braking system that needs attention. Brakes use fluid to create pressure, pushing the pads against the rotors or discs. If the fluid level gets too low, you will not be able to brake well, if at all. Nearly all cars have an indicator on the dash to warn you when the brake fluid level is low. This could

indicate a leak, and it is important to have it fixed right away. Like other car fluids, brake fluid should be replaced periodically, even if the level is sufficient. Condensation can infiltrate the fluid over time, possibly damaging other brake parts. Replace the brake fluid about every 25,000 miles or every two years. Other parts to have checked by your mechanic include the brake master cylinder and the brake rotors or discs. The brake master cylinder conveys brake fluid from the fluid reservoir to the individual brakes. The rotors or discs are what the brake pads press against to create friction and slow down your vehicle; this friction wears down the rotors or discs eventually. Maintaining and repairing your brakes can help you avoid serious damage to your vehicle, not to mention save your life and the lives of everyone else on the road. If you notice any change in how hard or how far you have to press the brake pedal to slow your vehicle, call your mechanic right away. The Good Life

Massage Getting the Relief You Knead By Holly Tierney-Bedord

Until you’ve lived with physical pain, you don’t know how fortunate you were to have once been pain-free. Luckily, one of the most effective and relaxing ways to feel better has been around for millennia— the practice of massage therapy. “The Yellow Emperor’s Classic Book of Internal Medicine” was written in China nearly 5,000 years ago, and it is still considered the definitive teaching guide of modern massage, acupuncture, acupressure, and herbology. Over the centuries, massage has become common all over the world. Massage is good for both mind and body. It has been proven effective in reducing pain, increasing circulation, helping injured muscles heal, lowering blood pressure and heart rate, and reducing stress. These results are documented in many studies, including a study on Swedish massage therapy that was published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine in 2010. It showed that just a single session of Swedish massage increased circulating lymphocytes and decreased interleukin levels, suggesting that massage has a role to play in the management of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. There are many varieties of massage, from deep tissue to hot stone and everything in between. Western massage tends to be more about direct contact with muscles, whereas Eastern massage techniques often incorporate energy work into the massage. It’s helpful to know what to expect if you partake in some of the more popular massage options out there. Swedish massage, sports massage, and deep tissue massage are all Western massage therapy techniques. These methods use a variety of deep and light strokes, kneading, percussion-like motions, and friction to address pain, and they can be very effective if you’re healing from an injury. Deep tissue massage tends to be more intense than Swedish massage. Sports massage tends to focus primarily on an area of injury that needs attention. Lotion or oil is used in all three methods, which means you can expect to disrobe for these styles of massage. If you’re stressed and new to massage, a Swedish massage is a great starting point. Aromatherapy massage is usually some version of a deep tissue massage with the addition of fragrant essential oils, further promoting relaxation and wellbeing. Hot stone massage (during which heated stones are placed on the skin) is great for loosening muscles and the tension within them. You can also plan to disrobe for this style of massage, in order to feel the full benefits of the hot stones. Shiatsu massage stimulates acupressure points on the body, improving energy flow, balance, stress-related problems, and conditions like insomnia and sciatica. Since this method of massage does not use lotion or oil, wearing loose clothing is recommended. Thai massage is a bit like guided yoga, with the instructor gently moving your body into different poses. Loose clothing is

60

October 2018

recommended for this style of massage, as well. Pregnancy massage focuses on an expectant mother’s back pain and swollen ankles, typically using a Western approach of hands-on, gentle kneading. (If you’re wondering how a pregnant woman can lie on her stomach on a massage table—these tables are specially designed to accommodate a pregnant belly.) Reflexology is all about your feet (and, sometimes, your hands and ears), which many people believe are like tiny maps of what’s happening throughout the entire body. A reflexologist will address everything from digestive problems to migraines by massaging the particular place on the feet, hands, or ears that corresponds to whatever issues are ailing you. Lymphatic massage uses gentle pressure to remove waste fluids from damaged lymph nodes. While most massage therapy techniques stimulate muscles, this technique’s primary goal is to detoxify the body. If you’ve never gotten a massage before, don’t be afraid to call ahead and ask what the experience will be like. Your questions might seem silly to you, but massage therapists likely hear them all the time and will be happy to answer them. It makes sense to be sure that your needs align with the massage technique that you choose. A deep tissue massage, for instance, is great for many people, but it may not be right for someone with lymphedema. You’ll have a better experience if you do a little homework ahead of time. Whatever health concern troubles you, there is likely a form of massage that may be able to address it. With the many benefits that massage therapy offers, you don’t need to feel that getting a massage is a luxury. In fact, your health insurance may even cover all or part of your massage treatment. Take advantage of this age-old practice that has proven health benefits. Massage is good for your mind, body, and soul! Fall Foliage Road Trips The Rolling Hills of Pennsylvania By Jackie Williams

With autumn finally here, there are plenty of destinations in the United States for a fall foliage road trip. I wanted to head out east, to Pennsylvania, to see what the historic state has to offer in terms of natural beauty. I was not disappointed! Have you planned a trip yet? If you want to see the leaves change and are not sure where to start, online searches for “fall foliage map” will give you an idea of how the season is going in various parts of the United States for prime leaf peeping. After choosing a route that started and ended in Philadelphia, I checked the local official tourism websites for routes to drive and recommended itineraries. My husband and I rented a comfortable vehicle near the airport and headed out to the Pocono Mountains! The drive was beautiful. We went through towns like Quakertown and Easton, as well as the Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Area, on our way to exploring the Poconos. Deer and hawks were spotted along the way. Pit stops were dangerous, as I always picked up delicious baked goods like whoopie pies and fresh pretzels. To stretch our legs a bit, we joined in on an easy Appalachian

trail hike, led for free by a guide at the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort. The guide even provided transportation back and forth from the resort, so we were able to hang out a little after our hike and admire the property’s gorgeous river and hillside views. Afterwards, we walked Main Street in nearby Stroudsburg and sampled food and homemade ice cream from their local restaurants. For more leaf peeping drives, we wanted to make our way over to Pennsylvania’s Americana region. Our next stop was to stay at the Bear Creek Mountain Resort in Macungie. On the way there, we spent some time hiking the scenic trails to check out the overlooks and see what we could spot at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. It was beautiful, and the trails were well managed and marked. I was told that people come from all over the world just to see the birds there. After an hour of hiking, we had worked up a healthy appetite, ›››

so we made our way into Lenhartsville for some authentic Pennsylvania Dutch food. Deitsch Eck restaurant delivered on some tasty homemade food. You could tell it was the hot spot in this small town, and it had a huge pie menu. After a long, fun day, we arrived at the Beer Creek, where we had gorgeous slopeside views of not only the resort but also hawks and marmots. In the off season, the resort provides activities like paddleboats and kayaks, geocaching, disc golf, and hiking and mountain biking trails. The heated pools and hot tubs helped soothe our tired muscles. Nearby, we had the opportunity to ride the Colebrookdale Railroad in Boyertown. Don’t miss it! What a wonderful experience we had riding this restored train through the woods along the river, complete with food, drink, and a baby grand piano being played throughout the ride. You can really tell everyone takes great pride in the railroad and wants you to enjoy your time. I would definitely recommend it! Next, we headed to the city of West Reading to do some window shopping along Penn Avenue. My favorite shop was Sweet Ride Ice Cream Parlor & Soda Fountain—need I say more? It was too hard to choose just one flavor, so I started with the ice cream flight and got to choose four! After an afternoon of walking Penn Avenue, we headed over to the top of Mount Penn to the Pagoda for views of the surrounding area. To finish off the day, we had dinner at the number-one restaurant around: Judy’s On Cherry. I thoroughly enjoyed our fall foliage road trip to Pennsylvania. There is plenty more to see on a future visit, but I loved how scenic and beautiful it was. The rolling hills and farmhouses were so picture-perfect that they reminded me of the kind of landscape photos that are turned into jigsaw puzzles. I would love to come back and spend more time in Amish country, stay at a farmhouse, and visit the local wineries. Along our trip, we talked to other people who also love the beauty of autumn. They recommended the foliage in Vermont and Maine, so that’s what I’m planning for next year’s fall travel. I would also love to go on a New England cruise or on the Hudson River to see the leaves change. I know everyone has their favorites, and we will just have to check them out. Luckily, fall comes every year! Sources for this article included: visitpaamericana.com, weather.com, and colebrookdalerailroad.com. WE October 2018

Enterprising Ideas

D&E Custom Building and Design Custom Homes, Tailor-Made for Families

By Jackie Byers

D&E Custom Building and Design is owned by Dennis and Elaine Milroy (hence, D&E). This multi-generational family business builds custom homes, completes remodeling and additions, does small repairs, and owns investment properties. “I have been in the construction business since I was a very young girl,” Elaine shares. “My dad was in the commercial construction aspect, and my dad’s dad was a true craftsman, straight from Germany. Dad would come home and ask if I wanted to go to work with him, and I’d instantly jump in the truck and go. It was fun for me to spend time with my dad.” During college, Elaine worked for the juvenile court system. Once her second child was born, Elaine worked in sales, traveling all of Nebraska and Iowa three months out of the year and working from home the other nine months. It was important to her to be there with her two kids every morning, every day after school, and during vacations. After the kids were in school full time, Elaine earned her real estate license. Elaine’s husband, Dennis, managed a restaurant and worked part time in the construction industry for many years. Once their second child was born, Dennis quit his job and created D&E Custom Building and Design. He started with decks, framing, and finish carpentry. Soon, Elaine’s dad joined the business, so he didn’t have to travel. D&E Custom Building and Design broadened their scope of work, taking advantage of Elaine’s dad’s skills and contacts to keep busy. After Elaine’s dad passed away and Dennis was on his own, the business broadened their scope of work again to include their first new construction residential home. Elaine quit her sales job to sell new homes and keep up with the managerial aspects of the business. “Once the business was on track, everything felt like it fell into place and this is what was meant to be,” Elaine shares. “We won’t build the same home over and over; we build specifically for the family that will live in the house. We work closely with clients and keep them involved in the process.” This close working relationship means Elaine and Dennis gain a deep understanding of what the family wants and needs in their home—and that leads to a more satisfied homeowner. “They get a finished product that just suits them,” Elaine says. “We were blessed to make it through the recession without financial fallout.” D&E Custom Building and Design has always been a family business, and it is becoming more of a family business all the time. Dennis and Elaine’s son Joey and their daughter Cassi’s husband are now part of the team. “Our family business means we talk shop around the dinner table. Each of us will put in our ideas, and

66

we all contribute our hard work on every project. We may have differences of opinion, but the final vision of the project works well Dennis and Elaine Milroy for the client.” with Joey (son) and D&E Custom Building and Design works in a Drew (son-in-law) variety of communities in Nebraska, from large cities like Omaha to small towns like Manley and Ashland. “We like to find where homes are needed, like in Cass County, and build in those communities,” Elaine explains. With the financial recession fading, the demand for residences, especially in small towns, is huge, she notes. “I think the desire for small-town life continues to grow, and there is no inventory of homes in many small towns to purchase.” It’s not just new homes, either. D&E Custom Building and Design does a lot of updating and remodeling work. “Those who already have homes in these communities want additions, modern kitchens, bathrooms, and mother-in-law suites. We do all of this, as well as finding the lots for building new homes. We recently added a mother-in-law suite to a property in Papillion. The mother was living in midtown Omaha, where she loved living, but it wasn’t working out with the family. We were able to consult with the family and the mother to create something we hoped would be a great solution.” In some markets, D&E Custom Building and Design purchases and remodels existing homes, similar to some home-flipping shows on TV, but Elaine expresses that it’s not as simple as TV shows. “The TV shows are entertaining but are far from realistic. We keep some homes we renovate to offer them as rental properties, and we resell others.” “It’s enjoyable to work in every phase of the business,” Elaine concludes. “Because it is our family business, we want to have the family we are serving involved in the entire building process. It shows we care, and we build a lifelong friendship, and people are very satisfied with the end result.” Whatever your home needs might be, Dennis and Elaine of D&E Custom Building and Design will help you reach your goals. The Green Thumb

Just a Few More Chores Finishing the Garden

By Sharon Knierim

Can you believe our growing season has come and gone? We’ve passed the heyday of luxuriously blooming flowers and the daily picking of vegetables. By this time of the year, we may or may not have had a frost (although usually not a hard freeze), which puts an end to some of summer’s blooms. It is definitely time to sharpen the shears and begin (or finish) trimming back the bounty that has blessed us during spring and summer. Although there is still time to enjoy the outdoors, and there is much fun still to be had in the backyard, there are also a few chores that need to be done before true winter sets in and brings all growth to a full stop. What needs to be done before we put our gardening implements into the tool shed? Let’s work backwards on this question. Whether you have a tool shed or a potting shed or a space for your garden tools in the garage, now is a good opportunity to do a little housecleaning, getting rid of what is broken or not needed. It’s also a good opportunity to harden your heart and finally toss out those broken pots and pieces of nothing that you will never use. A good sweeping of cobwebs, cleaning of pots, and restoring of order to the space will make finding what you need next spring much easier. Once your space has been spiffed, spend some time with your

tools. Putting them away for the season in clean condition will enhance their longevity. Be sure that tools are dry and free of dust and rust. Any watering hoses and hardware should be well drained, rolled, and hung on pegs. Leaving water in a hose can cause cracking in extremely cold weather. If you use a sprinkler system, review the maintenance guide or contact your sprinkler provider to properly prepare for freezing temperatures. What is to be done about flower beds? Proper autumn preparation of these areas is vital to the future success of your garden. As soon as the first frost has hit, remove all annual flowers. They will not be making a comeback but are wonderful for the compost bin. Then, sprinkle a full pound of Epsom salts for every 100

square feet, leaving it for one week. After seven days, turn the treated soil under. Midwestern gardeners generally have a large supply of fallen leaves. Because we use so many trees in our landscapes, every gardener has at least one rake to collect the innumerable leaves covering the ground in autumn. Instead of spending a small fortune on mulches to protect perennials from the cruelly cold winter temperatures, take advantage of this treasure trove of leaves—they’re free, and they’re already in the yard! If you are insulating perennials with dry fallen leaves, apply several inches. (The same effect of insulation can be achieved with straw or hay.) To avoid stepping on buried perennials during the winter, mark the center of the plant with a brightly colored long stick. Another benefit to using these painted sticks is the ability to find perennials in early spring as they begin to emerge. This, of course, is no time to forget the roses. Prior to covering them for winter, offer each plant a full handful of bone meal for awesome blooms next season. Here’s a nifty trick for using excess herbs left at the end of the season: Harvest and dry sage, rosemary, and thyme and place a small handful into a bag made of cheesecloth. Hang the bags in closets or use them in dresser drawers. You’ll love the effect. Even though Jack Frost may have already made a visit to the garden, some veggies can still be harvested. Before a hard freeze, beets, carrots, chard, cauliflower, celery, and broccoli are good candidates. Also, check any other root crops to determine if they are still viable. I’ll bet they are! Jack Frost is coming closer and closer and threatens to put a firm end to vegetable harvesting, but there is another trick you may want up your sleeve. To speed up the ripening process before Jack makes a hard strike, mix 1/2 cup of ammonia, 1/2 cup of baby shampoo, and 1 cup of apple juice in a 20-gallon sprayer. Fill the rest of the sprayer with warm water and apply. It is absolutely amazing to be able to save these veggies before winter arrives. She lives on a small farm in western Iowa and looks forward to sharing her passion for gardening each month with her greenthumbed friends. WE October 2018

Cuddly Critters

Don’t Shop—Adopt! Shelter Dogs Bring Lots of Love By Elizabeth French

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, which means now is a great time to bring home a pup in need! Dog rescues and shelters are constantly tasked with finding homes for millions of animals who need a family. An astounding 6–8 million animals are taken into shelters each year, and only half of them will leave to another home because of sheer overpopulation and lack of resources. That’s barely a drop in the bucket of the approximately 70 million stray animals currently out there! Volunteering, fostering, and adopting these fur babies are great ways to get involved and save lives. Animal shelters are sometimes criticized because of their “kill” or “no kill” categorization, but such labels don’t fully explain the situation, and this emotionally charged language does nothing to serve the overall good. The bottom line is that adopting a dog from a shelter—any shelter—or a dog rescue saves a life, and it can greatly enhance yours! Dog rescues provide essentials to their residents every single day. From spaying and neutering services to microchipping and vaccinating, rescues across the country are essential to the well-being of animals and the battle against overpopulation. Not only do they perform these expensive services prior to adoption, they are often done at no cost to potential adopters! As an added bonus, adoption fees go straight back into helping other dogs find loving homes of their own. If only a purebred will do, there are plenty of rescues dedicated to specific breeds! In this case, you’ll get the dog of your dreams while saving another life. Many of the dogs in rescues and shelters are older dogs (at least, they’re not puppies). Puppies are definitely cute, but there are a lot of advantages to adopting an adult dog. Are you looking for a dog that won’t take away your beauty rest or chew your shoes? An older rescue dog is the perfect solution! Many times, busy families don’t have the time to train a puppy. Shelter dogs are already trained and housebroken, so there are no messes to fret over. Older dogs also sleep through the night, contrary to their small-bladdered puppy compatriots, who are prone to waking at 2, 4, and 6 o’clock each morning for a potty break. Adult and senior dogs are also more likely to be done with their “chewing” phase. That said, if your heart is still set on a puppy, don’t worry—shelters are brimming with them! Some people may fear that a stray or a dog that has been “rescued” from a bad situation may not behave well, but most rescue dogs end up making excellent companions. They are known to blossom once they know they’re in a safe environment, and they seem to show their gratitude in happy cuddles and bonding with their rescuers. These sweet pups are often openly grateful to those who give them a second chance at life. If you are a dog lover but aren’t ready for the

commitment of adopting, consider volunteering a few hours at a local shelter. Why not spend a Saturday playing with dogs, helping clean up, or educating others about rescue dogs? There are so many ways to help pups in need, and every bit counts when every dollar means saving another life. Not only will you learn more about dogs, you’ll also achieve the satisfaction that comes from helping those who cannot help themselves. Short on time? Donations in all forms are always appreciated. Fostering a dog or puppy is another great way to help. This process makes transitioning into a forever home much easier for young or abused dogs while simultaneously opening space for more pups in the shelters. Animals that particularly benefit from fostering include pregnant females and puppies that are too young to be weaned or spayed or neutered. By keeping these dogs a bit longer, shelters can be sure their animals are in the very best shape when they are put up for adoption. If you are interested in adopting a furry family member, there is no better choice than a rescue dog. Typically, the older the dog, the smaller the adoption fee. Puppies who are six months and younger tend to be in the highest demand, so they tend to cost more. Remember, however, that these fees are directly re-invested into helping other pooches find their forever homes. Positive Perspective

Be Passionate Again You Don’t Have to Stay Stuck Do you ever feel stuck? You know what I mean. The passion is gone. You’re tired. There is no thrill in your life. You struggle to get out of bed, get to work, do your job. At home, you bark at the kids, annoy your spouse. You find yourself asking, “Is that all there is?” “Are you bored with life? Then throw yourself into some work you believe in with all your heart, live for it, die for it, and you find happiness that you had thought could never be yours.” —Dale Carnegie Wait a minute—you say—I already did that! I created a job that I loved. It’s just that, well, I’ve been doing it for so long, the thrill is gone, there is no excitement, no challenge. Life is such an interesting journey. We are constantly looking around us, making decisions as to what we want to have happen— what we want to create. Sometimes, things turn out exactly like we had imagined. We get just what we said we wanted. Standing in this new place, this new reality, we realize that there are things about this creation that we didn’t force when we originally launched our creation. Then, many of us begin to feel stuck. We lose the passion that got us here in the first place. What’s a human being to do? “Whatever you can do, or believe you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.” —Goethe

By Janet Van deWalle

Is that really possible? Can we take a look at where we are currently standing and set new goals, make a new decision? Can we begin a new creation? Can we boldly go where we’ve never gone before? This is what creation is all about. It is an ever-evolving work of art. So many of us are concerned with “getting it done.” Well, we will never get it done! Our wants, our desires are always going to change. We create something and then we stand in that place of achieving it. The contrast once we have arrived shows us what we like about our creation…and what we don’t. We then make a new decision, based on where we are today and launch a new decision, a new creation. The trap that many of us set ourselves is believing that we are stuck. Is it safer to stay with what you’ve already created? Of course. Is it scary to expand your creation and make the decision that you want more? Certainly. Realize, though, that when you launched your original creation it was a little scary, too! “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” —Mark Twain Life is an ever-evolving creation. We don’t have to stay stuck. We can make a new decision. We can start to have fun and be passionate again. We can return to the purpose of our lives. WE
