Tufly’s Shoe Center

Promoting Happy, Healthy Feet By Roxy Orr

Fitness experts urge us to take 10,000 steps a day to stay fit and healthy. That’s about 3,650,000 steps a year—no small task, especially if your feet hurt. Remember the saying “my dogs are barking”? If you are experiencing foot pain, come visit Alan and Dorothy Tufly of Tufly’s Shoe Center. They fill doctors’ footwear prescriptions for diabetes, plantar fasciitis, arthritic deformities, and other problems. They are specialists at solving foot problems with great-fitting, stylish shoes. We tend to focus on many other parts of our bodies to maintain health—we moisturize, we exercise, we tone, we diet—but we often ignore the important platform upon which our skeleton balances. If you have ever had a foot problem, you know it’s true: If your feet hurt, everything hurts. “We have solutions to foot problems, and the trust of our customers is so important to us,” Dorothy says. “That is what we strive for with each customer.” Alan and Dorothy are passionate about helping their customers find the right shoes for their individual needs. The Tuflys opened their shoe store 25 years ago and have been at their present location at 16909 Lakeside Hills Plaza for 12 years. Alan and Dorothy have a combined 55 years of experience in the business. While I was in the store, looking at the different styles of shoes, a young woman came in with a special request—she had small, wide feet. She was a special education teacher, and she knew that she needed comfortable shoes with good support. Dorothy asked her key questions about her needs, her style, and what types of shoes she had liked in the past. After listening carefully to her customer and zeroing in on what she needed and desired, Dorothy suggested several shoes. Ask yourself if this is the type of treatment you might get at a big box, self-serve shoe store. There is a certified pedorthist on staff at Tufly’s Shoe Center. Dorothy calls pedorthists “pharmacists for the feet.” Pedorthists have completed additional educational and clinical training in the mechanics of the foot; they work with other healthcare professionals to ensure that each customer is evaluated correctly regarding foot needs. One of the solutions for balance or gait difficulties is molded orthotics. At Tufly’s Shoe Center, your orthotics are fitted and molded to your own foot. Orthotics are fit specifically for each customer and are made in the in-house lab. Orthotics can help customers who are suffering from pain in their feet, knees, hips, and back. Shoe manufacturers are listening to men and women who are demanding great style, fit, and comfort in their daily footwear. The Finn Comfort line is known as the ultimate therapy shoe, improving posture and muscle function. Several years ago, I had a colleague who was going to Italy for three weeks. She

asked me what kind of walking shoes to take with her. I referred her to Tufly’s Shoe Center, where she purchased a red pair of Finn Comfort sandals. She later told me that those shoes were the best investment she made for that trip. Finns have removable insoles, allowing you to put in your own custom insoles, if needed. That way, you can have great arch support and a stylish shoe. Other brands available at the store include Brooks, Think!, Dansko, Aravon, Alegria, Earth, Vionic, Dunham, Saucony, P.W. Minor, Drew, and Naot. Danskos are popular with professionals in the medical, culinary, and teaching fields. Finn Comfort’s Finnamic line of stability rocker sole shoes are a very important line for people who need relief from plantar fasciitis, pain in the metatarsal of the mid foot, and arthritis problems. The Tuflys are particularly impressed with the Naot brand. This line from Israel (“Naot” means “oasis”) has been around since 1942 but is relatively new to the United States. Tufly’s carries all styles of shoes, including workout, casual dress, business casual, and special occasion shoes. The office collections are especially popular with male and female young professionals. Young or old, working or retired, active or relaxed—no matter what your style, you’ll find shoes at Tufly’s that fit your needs. Alan and Dorothy are happy to place special orders, and they keep notes about your purchases for future reference. They’re eager to help you find a shoe that keeps those dogs from barking. Shoes that address your foot pain can still have a “Wow!” factor. Remember that 10,000-step journey? It begins with a first step to Tufly’s Shoe Center.
