Publisher’s Notes

Okay, Here We Go—2018! Whenever the New Year arrives, the previous year always calls to me to look back on it. For me, 2017 was unbelievable. (What is so fascinating about that word is that it can be interpreted in a number of different ways.) Back in 2010, I was discussing “life” with my son, Adam; his girlfriend, Sam; my daughter, Carissa; her husband, Ken; and my granddaughter, Savannah (just one granddaughter back then!). I recall that Adam, who was 20 years old at the time, said, “Mom, it’s all relative, and it depends on your perspective.” Those words have stuck in my mind ever since. I talk to a lot of people every day. I meet business owners through the magazine. I talk to customers at the restaurant/bar I own, Bricks & Mortar Bar and Bistro. It is so BIZARRE to me the different takes that people have on the past year. From “best year of my life…great year…couldn’t be any better…” to “Will it ever end? I can’t wait until 2018…It’s been so hard!…What is going on with the planet?” Hmmm. I guess those words that came out of my son’s mouth back in 2010 are more appropriate than ever. “Mom, it’s all relative, and it depends on your perspective.” I just listen to everyone. I learn so much! I don’t know what your take on the last year has been. My hope is that you have had a great year. One common thread that I hear is how incredibly FAST the last year has seemed. I shake my head as I write those words. Where does the time go? The other common thread is the wish for peace… within ourselves, our loved ones, the world. Just a few days ago, Erin Lanza, my Art and Editorial Director, “caught” me (I run in and out of my office like a banshee!). She said we have to order holiday cards! It has been a tradition for years for Erin to design our Christmas cards. We pick a quote, she designs them, and they are personalized. The next day, as I was getting ready, I thought of a quote that I felt would work for 2017. An hour later, Erin came into my office to decide what the card should say. Erin began with, “Let there be peace on earth…” and we finished the sentence in unison, “…and let it begin with me.” Same quote. We looked at each other and laughed. Yes. Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.

Did I bring a smile to someone’s face? Did I say words of healing? Did I let go of my anger and resentment? Did I forgive? Did I love? These are the real questions. I must trust that the little bit of love that I sow now will bear many fruits, here in this world and the life to come.” —Henri Nouwen

Fresh Year, Fresh Look Here’s to a Comfortable, Classy 2018 By Holly Bell

The New Year promises a fresh start! Before you go making grand, impossible resolutions you know you won’t keep, how about resolving to make clothing choices that are more comfortable and classy? The secret to contentment can be summed up in one Danish word: hygge. It’s the deliberate practice of taking pleasure in the presence of gentle, soothing things. The only known side effect is a profound sense of well-being! Why not bring this feeling into our lives through our wardrobe? When you feel comfortable and classy in your clothes, you feel good about yourself. Luxuriously soft fabrics are an important feature of feeling fabulous and pampered. Cashmere and cashmere blends are always a classy choice. Especially versatile are the soft looks of pants and jackets in matching tones. The pantsuit is back and going strong for 2018. Reinvented with softer, less-fitted jackets that tie or flow, the modern pantsuit is an easy fit for people of all sizes. Dressing in a single color is an extremely classic and pulled-together look. We know that head-to-toe mono-color looks are always flattering to our figures! The pantsuit can also be very versatile—you can mix those matching pants and jackets with anything in your closet. Look for these cool pant and skirt suits in beautiful pastels, winter white, and gorgeous blush. These colors look amazing in the winter, when everyone else is in dark tones, and they easily transition to spring.

The pantsuit brings us to another top element in winter fashion: the menswear look. Mixing up menswear looks with a feminine touch is an important focus this winter, and it’s easy to achieve, without sacrificing comfort. Borrowing from the boys is nothing new, but it looks fresh this year when mixed with feminine overtones such as a ruffled blouse or a statement necklace. For a bit of a flirty look, button up the jacket and accessorize with a soft, silky scarf. Winter isn’t winter without a new, super-soft, oversized sweater or two. I recommend a mock neck for those chilly days; it’s suitably warm but less inhibiting than a turtleneck. Pick the coziest fabric you can find with sleeves that leave just your fingers out! A great pairing with these long, cozy sweaters would be leggings. Look for leggings that are lined with fleece for a little extra warmth and hygge. Also extremely lovable are the faux fur choices we have this year. With faux fur making appearances on coats, hats, vests, scarves, purses, and even dresses, we have no reason not to be warm and cozy. The big fashion news this winter (and moving into spring) is velvet. Designers are fascinated with this fabric again, and nothing could make us happier. In the past, sumptuous velvet was often associated with nobility. In the 1970s, however, it had a decidedly hippie feel. Lucky for us, it is readily available this year

in multiple variations. From crushed velvet tees to luxuriously long winter coats, velvet is the go-to fabric of the season. Sometimes, we worry that the hot trend this year should be approached with caution because it could be out of fashion already by next year. Fear not, velvet fans! With the wide availability of this product and the way it has been embraced by the fashionistas of the world, velvet has found a distinctive spot in the fashion marketplace. The Pantone Color Institute has the job of predicting color choices for the year. They influence color trends in home and clothing fashions, along with many other areas of design. I am delighted to quote Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of PCI, who has said that “metallics have moved over into the neutrals. We certainly see no signs of these shiny metals waning. Same goes for the iridescent trend.” Now we can include metallic fabrics in the host of beautiful classics that we can enjoy wearing for years to come! Personally, I love the juxtaposition of shiny and soft in fashion. Mixing textures makes everything more interesting! A strong contrast between fabrics highlights the features of each one and brings your look into sharp focus. Rather than placing impossible demands on yourself this year, why not concentrate on creating pleasure, not only in your personal life but in the way you dress? Light the candles and curl up in the softest clothing you can find, or take a walk outside and enjoy the winter wonderland. Yes, it’s cold outside—that doesn’t mean you have to hide under a blanket all winter. Let’s resolve to savor the moments of a beautiful winter season in comfortable, classy looks that make us glad for the falling temperatures! Editor’s Note: Holly has been in the fashion industry for over 30 years as a buyer, boutique store owner, visual merchandiser, and fashion show producer. She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments.

In a large bowl, blend 2 cups of flour, one and one-fourth teaspoons of baking soda, and one-half teaspoon of salt. Mix the cooled egg mixture into the dry mixture. Blend until combined. Pour the mixture into the prepared cake pan. Bake for 40–50 minutes at 325 degrees (test if done). Cool cake and invert onto a serving platter. Dust with powdered sugar or make a drizzle. For the drizzle: Melt two-thirds cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips. Add 2 Tablespoons of butter, 2 Tablespoons of half and half (add more for a thinner sauce), and 2 Tablespoons of rum. Cool slightly. Drizzle over the cake. Crostini Appetizers Let 4 ounces of crumbled blue cheese and 2 Tablespoons of butter come to room temperature (takes about 30 minutes). Stir in 2 Tablespoons of brandy (optional) and add one-fourth cup of chopped walnuts. Core a ripe pear and cut into 16 slices. Baked Ham with Fruit Glaze (Can be adapted for the Instant Pot/Multi Cooker.) Place a 3–4-pound ham in a roasting pan, and score the top with a diamond pattern. Bake at 325 degrees (uncovered) for 2 hours. After 2 hours, heat up one-half cup of apricot preserves, 1 cup of cherry preserves, and one-fourth cup of orange juice. Spread half of the mixture over the ham and continue baking for another 20 minutes (until the ham’s internal temperature is 140 degrees). Slice ham as desired. Serve with additional fruit sauce on the side. No-Fail Oven Brisket (Can be adapted for the Instant Pot/Multi Cooker.) Place a 4–5-pound brisket, fat side up, into a large baking dish. Sprinkle with seasonings of your choice, like salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Pour 2 bottles of chili sauce over the top and add one-half cup of water. Cover tightly with aluminum foil. Bake at 250 degrees for 6–8 hours. Skim the fat, slice, and serve. House-Featured Slow Cooker Pork (Can be adapted for the Instant Pot/Multi Cooker.) Put a 3–4-pound bone-in pork roast in a slow cooker. Add 1 sliced onion, 1 teaspoon of pepper, and 3 cloves of garlic. Pour a bottle of jarred Korean-style barbecue sauce over the pork. Cook on low for 6–8 hours. Shred and serve on soft rolls. French Dip Sandwiches Put a 2–3-pound rump roast into a roasting pan. Bake at 450 degrees for 45 minutes. Remove the roast from the oven and season as you like with garlic cloves, salt and pepper, and seasoning salt. Add 4 cups of beef broth or stock. Cover with foil

and bake at 350 degrees for 2 hours. Slice thinly. Serve on rolls with au jus on the side. Kicked-Up Black Bottom Pie Blind-bake a prepared pie crust at 350 degrees for 25–30 minutes or until golden brown. Cool. (You can also use a prepared graham cracker crust for this pie.) For the chocolate layer, put 2 Tablespoons of butter into a saucepan, add one-half cup of whipping cream, and cook on low until the butter melts. Remove the pan from the heat, add three-fourths cup of chocolate chips, and stir to melt the chips. After about 5–10 minutes, add one-half teaspoon of vanilla. Pour the chocolate mixture into the pie shell. Let cool, then refrigerate. Combine three-fourths cup of sugar with three and one-half Tablespoons of cornstarch and a dash of salt. Whisk in 2 cups of whole milk and 4 large egg yolks. Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, for 5–7 minutes, until mixture thickens and boils. Cook another 2 minutes. Remove from heat, stir in 2 Tablespoons of butter and one teaspoon of vanilla, and mix well. (You can add 1 Tablespoon of rum, if you want.) Press a piece of plastic wrap directly on top of the pudding, let cool, and then move it to the fridge for 3–4 hours or overnight. When the pudding is cold, whip one-half cup of cold whipping cream to medium stiff peaks. Fold into the pudding. Pour the pudding mixture on top of the chocolate layer in the pie shell. Chill until ready to serve. Top with additional whipped cream, if desired. Editor’s Note: Kate has been an Omaha area culinary instructor since 1997. The Facial Surgery Institute Beauty at the Hands of a Surgical Magician By Emily Kerr

Since 2010, Dr. Bruce Kuhn has owned and operated the Facial Surgery Institute, at 2727 South 144th Street. With a career in medicine that spans nearly 30 years, Dr. Kuhn is exceptional—he is not only a skilled medical doctor and surgeon but also a dentist. He combined these skill sets as the head of Oral and Facial Plastic Surgery for eight years and as a clinical professor at UNMC before co-founding the Facial Surgery Institute. He now provides comfort and expertise to his many satisfied patients. A day at the Facial Surgery Institute varies depending on what kind of procedures the team has scheduled. These might include ear, nose, chin, or jaw surgery; face and neck lifts; or laser skin resurfacing (the Facial Surgery Institute offers an array of cosmetic as well as reconstructive procedures). According to Dr. Kuhn, about 50–60 percent of patients come to the Facial Surgery Institute for traditional oral surgery, such as wisdom tooth removal or dental implants. Dr. Kuhn explains his philosophy toward his field this way: “Facial plastic surgery, whether cosmetic or reconstructive, encourages and promotes a strong, positive self-image. No matter how small or large the change on the outside, these procedures can create extraordinary changes on the inside.” Melan, a patient of Dr. Kuhn, was referred to Facial Surgery Institute for dental implants. In addition to the three dental implants, Dr. Kuhn and his team corrected an asymmetrical facial deformity that was a result of a terrible boating accident that occurred in 2000. “Dr. Kuhn is an amazing surgeon,” Melan says. “He was so easy to talk to, very upfront and caring. After that successful procedure, I had a chin/neck lift and laser skin resurfacing. I can honestly say I think I look the best I’ve ever looked thanks, to Dr. Kuhn and his staff.” Dr. Kuhn’s success depends on his attention to detail and his devotion to his patients. According to his nurse, Angela, “he’s extremely particular, and he is very much a patient advocate. His expertise, his bedside manner, and his true desire for good outcomes set him apart.” Dr. Kuhn recalls a surgery that required innovative thinking. “We spent six hours on a nose that had been operated on before by other doctors…it was absolutely debilitated,” says Dr. Kuhn. When faced with a nose that was virtually destroyed, Dr. Kuhn rebuilt the nose by taking a rib graft and was able to produce the best result possible for his patient in the long term. He takes pride in the way he handles his toughest cases, whether he’s faced with a technical problem or a frustrated patient. “Those that come in grumpy, I like the best,” he says. “I like the challenge. Hopefully, by the time they leave, they’re saying, ‘Well, that was fun!’” One attribute that is clear when speaking with Dr. Kuhn

12

January 2018

is his humility. He credits his success to his team and nursing staff, who, according to him, “do 95 percent of the work.” He doesn’t spend much time comparing himself to the competition. “I’ve been partners with many of them before,” he points out. “We all do the best we can for patients. Our town is very fortunate to have great health care.” As many surgeons can attest, one of the challenges to running a successful surgical practice is handling insurance coverage, and Dr. Kuhn is no exception. “People come in with different issues,” he explains, “and they want it to be affordable. They want their insurance to pay for everything that they have done. That is not the way it happens, and we get put in a position to negotiate for the patient with the insurance carrier.” Dr. Kuhn and his team are at the forefront of technology, and they perform over 200 aesthetic procedures a year. For example, when preparing for jaw surgery, all the planning is done virtually to ensure the best possible outcome for the patient, even before the first incision is made. They also use laser technology for small incisions around delicate areas as well as laser resurfacing. Technology goes through trends, so Dr. Kuhn tries to select what is best for his patients. Before investing in new technology, he asks himself, “Will what I’m doing today still work for someone 20 years from now?” Having achieved accreditation with the American Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), the Facial Surgery Institute is raising the bar and helping set the standards for best practices in surgical medicine throughout the country. The Facial Surgery Institute is the only AAAHC-Oral and Maxillofacial accredited facility in the state of Nebraska, which is a great reason to reach out to them if you are considering cosmetic or reconstructive surgery. Their phone number is 402-330-8460. If you are at all on the fence about seeing Dr. Kuhn, just take the word of this patient testimonial: “The Best! My husband had to have a wisdom tooth removed, and he has a lot of anxiety. Dr. Kuhn is so compassionate and understanding. He discussed the procedure with him beforehand and made sure he understood everything that was going to take place. His staff was excellent and so friendly, too. An overall wonderful experience.” For more information, check out the Facial Surgery Institute online at www.fsiomaha.com. WE

CAPRICORN December 21—January 19 Happy birthday, Capricorn! Focus on your dreams and desires, and work hard to fulfill them. Take breaks whenever you can to spend more time with family, friends, and the people you care about the most. You may notice that you are more likely to be in a good mood, and your pleasant personality makes others want to be around you. Make sure you allow some time to enjoy that! Aquarius (Jan 20-–Feb 18) Consider your past to better understand your present. This year, you find balance and make some adjustments to be more contented in your daily life.

likely to be at peace with the world around you. You feel optimistic about the future—and you should!

Pisces (Feb 19–Mar 20) Now is the time to renew the projects that use your creative energy. This energy will inspire you to make positive changes in your life!

Leo (July 23–Aug 22) Prepare for changes in both your professional life and your personal life. Be ready for a dynamic love life. You will have high moments and low moments, but it will be worth it!

A Woman’s Work

Beginning the New Year Resolving to Improve

By Sharon Knierim

Once again, we face the New Year with a new calendar and lots of new plans and dreams. Actually, a few of these plans and dreams may not be all that new…they’re plans from 2017 that were left unfinished, put aside for one reason or another. After we’ve recovered from 2017, it is a good time to think about the future and what it has in store for us. It is also a great time to make good things happen for ourselves and those we hold dear. Many of my friends have admitted to falling into the bad habit of procrastination, and I am certainly no exception. Who hasn’t found herself putting off until tomorrow (or next week or next year) what could be done today? Of course, the beginning of a new year would be the perfect time to end this most annoying of personal habits. After all, where would the world be if we all waited until the perfect time to move forward on plans? Who among us procrastinates the most? That would be hard to say. No amount of research has offered any solid information, but a glance in the mirror might reveal at least one procrastinator! Some of us have this nasty habit down to an art form; however, we must be careful not to let too many plans or projects pile up. There are others of us who enjoy being

reminded that there is an unending list of things to do. Although it may be challenging to get everything done, some of us also find it very satisfying. When we were raising our children, I often referred to a manual written by Dr. Benjamin Spock. He claimed that adolescent females were the worst procrastinators, and so I watched our little daughter, waiting for her to begin putting off chores and homework. It never did happen with her. Was Dr. Spock wrong about this? If so, it seems that he never got around to changing his mind for all of us anxious parents. One friend told me recently that she has decided to give up

her lifelong habit of criticizing people. I think that takes a certain amount of courage. For some reason, she finds it very difficult to talk about people, places, or events without negatively editorializing each subject—anyone and anything is fair game for her. How will she remedy this problem without filing down the tip of her sharp tongue? Her plan will require a real turnaround in her attitude toward life. Her hope is to begin seeing her own life as a blessing, learning to appreciate other people and their challenges, and learning more about the world through a wider lens. I wish her the best of luck. In fact, I think I’ll join her! In the recent past, I have noticed that when I open my mouth, my Aunt Margaret sometimes hops out. That is to say, I sound just like that well-intentioned woman who seemed to be a harbinger of negativity. That is a tough place to put yourself in. Are you among those people who refuse to talk about or even contemplate making New Year’s resolutions? Maybe it does seem old-fashioned or quaint to step up to the plate and swear to stop doing this or that (or to start doing that or this). Some folks give up on the idea of making resolutions and instead decide to make improvements. For those of us who put things off, perhaps this step-wise approach is a better path. The choices for improvement are endless, but whatever we choose has to be constructive. In the end, it should make us feel good about not only ourselves but also this project that we have chosen. Many of us have tried and failed miserably at making resolutions happen (not that anybody is keeping track). We let our lack of success defeat us. Truly, if difficulty arises, there is absolutely nothing wrong with modifying your resolution to make it more user-friendly. Any plan can be adjusted to work better and produce a more desirable result. Most importantly, don’t be too hard on yourself. Don’t be your worst critic—save that opportunity for someone else! One year, I resolved to be nice and pleasant to everyone in the future. As you can imagine, that resolution went down in flaming defeat. Is it even possible to be nice all the time? Maybe not, but putting a good face to situations that are not pleasing to us seems like a solid improvement. In the long run, it is best not to waste energy beating yourself up about lessthan-perfect results. Instead, find the best success that you can. Welcome to 2018! WE

Vantage Point

The Growth of Jensen Tire and Auto A New Facility for Future Plans By Jackie Byers

Before Matt Jensen was even old enough to drive a car, he was already sweeping the floors in his father’s tire business. His father opened the first Jensen Tire and Auto in 1973. When Matt bought the business in 1997, there were 10 stores. Today, the number of stores has grown to 21, and Matt’s vision of the future of Jensen Tire and Auto is even bigger and better. “Jensen Tire has the right team to become a regional business,” he declares. “The product and the services we offer are right for our hometown, our state, and the whole area.” To achieve these goals, Matt and his wife, Diane, have completed a huge building project. Located at 10365 South 136th Street, the new corporate offices of Jensen Tire and Auto are really something to see. “Diane is the designer,” Matt notes. “She thinks of everything, down to the last detail.” Planning for 9,000 square feet takes a lot of talent. Diane has an eye for the perfect color schemes for furniture, carpeting, and walls. She knows where to find quality pieces that fit together, function well, and please the eye. The new office space has extra space for future growth. Attached to the office is a huge space that houses 26,000 tires. “I have tires for every vehicle on the road and room to stock more,” Matt notes. “This is why I am ready to become a regional retailer.” However, Matt has been in business long enough to know that just having a huge inventory does not make one successful. “I have to know what the competition is doing. Each night, we check competitors’ websites, so I can guarantee the best price on any given tire at any time.” Another essential element of a successful business is the employees, Matt asserts. “I have the right people at all levels. I have long-term employees—some have been with me for 30 years. They understand our business and our clients’ needs.” At the moment, Jensen Tire and Auto employs 200 people. “Obviously, as we grow, that number will go up in all departments. Our new headquarters has room for staff meetings and training programs. We have meetings for sales and service people monthly. This is essential for all levels and all types of employees.” The technicians at Jensen Tire and Auto work tirelessly to keep up with the changing technology of modern cars. “In terms of service technicians, the days of grease monkeys repairing cars is long gone,” Matt points out. “Today’s cars are fully computerized. When something in a car needs repair, a monkey wrench alone will not get the job done. Our technicians require tools

18

January 2018

and diagnostic equipment that can cost over $100,000. We have invested in our technicians so that we can repair the problems on any make of car.” Customers who aren’t familiar with car repair may not know that even the most experienced technician cannot repair every car. “The computer systems differ from one make of car to another,” Matt explains, and different technicians are trained to repair different systems. For some repair shops, this can be a problem if a customer brings in a vehicle that their technicians aren’t trained to repair. Jensen Tire and Auto does not have this problem—no matter which location you visit, they can call on any of the technicians at any of the 21 local stores in their network. “If a client brings a repair job to our store in, say, La Vista, we will bring the right technician to that store to do the work. That is one way that we create customer satisfaction.” “We have the goal, the infrastructure, and the space to grow,” Matt declares. “I am continually looking for quality people who want to join our team. My sons have come up through the business as I did, and I have two granddaughters who may be the future of Jensen Tire and Auto.” Matt knows that training the right people for office, sales, or technical service leads to satisfied customers. From the comptroller, Allan Harry, to the sales manager, David Roberts, to district managers Corey Swanson, Nick Jensen, and Mike Jensen, the staff knows how to bring clients back to Jensen Tire and Auto. If you need tires or if you want your car repaired quickly and properly, you can visit any one of Jensen’s 21 facilities in the Omaha metro area (find the whole list on their website, jensentireandauto.com). Fresh Concept

Need a Lift? Exploring Facial Cosmetic Surgery Options By Kylie Gumpert

As we age, our features start to shift. Eyelids may become saggy or droopy, making you look angry when you aren’t or even impairing your vision. Simple genetics or a lifetime of exposure to the elements may cause wrinkling or loose facial skin that makes you look much older than you actually are, which can take a toll on your self-esteem and confidence. While aging cannot be avoided, its physical effects on your face can be adjusted with surgical procedures. If you’ve ever considered undergoing facial corrective surgery, whether for purely cosmetic reasons or to correct an abnormality that is impacting your day-to-day life, you are not alone. While only about five percent of people in the U.S. elect for surgery of the face or body, there has been a steady increase in this number since the 2000s. Facial cosmetic surgery cases, including nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, and face lifts, have been increasing almost every year, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Men account for about eight percent of these surgeries every year, and patients between 40 and 54 years of age make up around 50 percent of surgeries. Other facial surgeries to correct damage or more life-threatening conditions have also been increasing over time. Known as maxillofacial or reconstructive surgery, these procedures can include restructuring the face after serious injury, fixing a cleft palate, or rebuilding nasal passages that can cause obstructive sleep apnea. Since these surgeries are correcting conditions that can impact a patient’s physical health, they are generally covered by insurance. Elective cosmetic surgeries, unless they come with vital health benefits, are generally not covered. The long-term aesthetic effects of cosmetic surgery, specifically of face lifts, is pretty darned good. According to a 2012 study in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 76 percent of patients who underwent face lift surgery continued to look younger and maintain their initial results five and a half years after their procedures. Something to consider, however, is that often the neck area will begin to relapse by this time. Let’s take a look at some popular facial cosmetic procedures, starting with facial lift surgeries: full or miniface lift, neck lift, eyebrow or forehead lift, and eyelid lift. With a full face lift, a surgeon will make an incision starting along your hairline at your temples that will run around the bottom of your ear and along your lower scalp. The surgeon will redistribute fat and adjust underlying facial tissue or muscle to achieve the look you prefer. After that, excess skin will be trimmed and the incision line sutured. Many times, a full face lift will include a neck lift, an eyebrow or forehead lift, and an eyelid lift. A mini-lift is meant for patients who don’t quite need a full face lift. This procedure involves making a shorter incision line that does not wrap around to the lower scalp. A neck lift procedure is similar to a face lift procedure, but the incision starts along the hairline in the patient’s

20

January 2018

sideburn area. Additionally, surgeons will often make an incision under the patient’s chin and then use liposuction to remove any excess fat. For a brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, a surgeon may make one of two different kinds of incisions: an ear-to-ear incision within the hair or several small incisions along the hairline around the top of the patient’s face. With the latter method, the surgeon will insert an endoscope (a small tube with a camera on the end) under the skin to examine and cut out parts of underlying muscle that are causing deep wrinkles or sagging of the patient’s forehead and brows. A patient looking for an eyelid lift can opt for an upper lift, a lower lift, or both. In an upper eyelid lift, an incision is made in the eye’s natural crease. The surgeon will adjust tissue and muscle, remove any excess skin or fatty tissue, and then close the incision with sutures or skin glue. In a lower eyelid lift, the surgeon may make an incision just below the lash line or just inside the lower eyelid. With the latter technique, no excess skin is removed. Rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping, is the most popular facial cosmetic surgery procedure. Incisions may be made either within the nose or along the tissue that separates the nostrils. Incisions can also be made along the natural curve of the nostrils to adjust their size or position. Depending on what the patient desires, the surgeon might shave down bone or remove cartilage, or she may need to use cartilage from other parts of the body to reconstruct parts of the nose. Ear tucking is used most commonly to correct oversized or protruding ears. An incision is usually made on the back upper part of the ear but, if necessary, may be made in the front inner folds of the ear. The surgeon will use permanent sutures to hold the ear in its new position. The procedure

www.womensedition.com

may also include removing excess tissue in the inner ear, an issue that commonly develops in patients with protruding ears. Chin surgery options vary, depending on whether a patient feels her chin is too prominent or too subtle. To minimize a prominent chin, the surgeon may shave down bone or restructure or move the upper or lower jaw bones to create symmetry across the lower part of the face. For less defined chins, as well as jaws or cheeks, silicone facial implants may be used to produce more structured, noticeable features. For the chin area, the surgeon may make an incision on the underside of the chin or inside the mouth. She will then adjust underlying tissues and insert the customized implant. Jaw implants are put in place through incisions made at the back of the mouth, along the bottom of the patient’s gumline. Cheek implants are usually put in place through incisions in the mouth, as well. Facial implants, compared to other cosmetic procedures, may take several months to stop swelling and heal fully. More popular in recent years is a procedure known as dimpleplasty. A dimple is created by making an incision on the inside of the cheeks and connecting underlying muscle to the cheek skin. In many cases, these dimples are permanent, but they may lose their prominence as the incision area heals. The most important parts of deciding whether facial surgery is right for you are researching which procedures you desire and finding a surgeon you trust who has the experience you need. One distinction that’s easy to miss is the difference between a plastic surgeon and a cosmetic surgeon. Depending on your needs as a patient, you may need one or the other. As defined by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, plastic surgeons are generally focused on repairing damage or defects that have altered a patient’s

appearance or body function, while cosmetic surgeons are focused specifically on enhancing someone’s appearance. Any licensed physician, regardless of how she received cosmetic surgery training, can legally perform cosmetic procedures. However, when a physician is certified through the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, she has completed eight years of college and medical school, at least three years in an approved residency program, and at least one year in an approved fellowship program, during which she has performed at least 300 cosmetic surgery procedures. That’s the kind of surgeon you want to hire. It’s essential to ensure that your cosmetic surgeon is certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, but finding a certified surgeon isn’t enough. Depending on the procedure you are looking to have done, you also need to make sure your surgeon has relevant experience with that particular surgery and the track record to prove it—including before and after photos as well as patient testimonials. Each surgeon has her own style, so even if she has the appropriate experience, it still may not be a good fit if her vision doesn’t match yours. Once you find a surgeon that you like and trust, you also want to confirm the facility’s accreditation, which is important for your overall health during surgery. Look for AAAASF, AAAHC, or JCAHO certification. It takes work, time, and lots of research, but the effort you put into your search for the right facial surgeon will be well worth it. With the right surgeon and the right procedures, you’ll soon have the look that makes you feel more like yourself! A Venue as Distinctive as Your Special Event Scottish Rite Masonic Center

By Robyn V. Powell

Whether you’re planning a wedding, your company’s annual holiday gala, a conference, or a business meeting, the most important decision you’ll make is choosing the right venue. A well-located venue that can comfortably accommodate your guests and provide all the right amenities will play a prominent role in your event’s success. Finding a venue that meets all of your needs and has the flexibility to be personalized to your preferences is challenging. If you aspire to the finer things in life and are seeking a distinctive venue for your next special event, consider Omaha’s Scottish Rite Masonic Center. The stately building at the corner of 20th and Douglas Streets, in downtown Omaha, represents a time in the early 20th century when buildings were designed to reflect the gravitas of the grand American institutions that would occupy them. Designed by local architect John Latenser, whose works include the Douglas County Courthouse, the neoclassical revival–style Masonic Center opened its doors in the fall of 1914 and is listed on the

However, in service to the community, the Scottish Rite has opened its doors to the public, making it available to rent as a venue for meetings, weddings, parties, and receptions. I had the pleasure of exploring the rich history and tapestry of this landmark building with General Secretary John Maxwell, a gracious and knowledgeable guide. From the moment I entered the building, I had the sense that I had been invited into a world where time has stood still—a bygone era of romance, elegance, and grandeur. A

Midwest Oral Surgery and Dental Implants When You Need More Than a Dentist

By Marge Shoemaker

For routine dental care, fillings and crowns, or toothaches, you see your regular dentist. What happens when you need more than routine dental care? What if your pain is so excruciating that you can’t wait for office hours? What if your mouth has been injured (by a baseball, for example) and you need immediate help? What if the procedure you need is simply beyond the scope of your dentist’s skills? That’s easy—you call an oral surgeon. If you live in the Omaha area, you call Midwest Oral Surgery and Dental Implants. The doctors at Midwest Oral Surgery and Dental Implants want you to know that they are not only dentists—they are much more. As oral surgeons, they are specialists in oral and maxillofacial surgery…that is, surgery of the mouth and face. Drs. Jerome Wees, John Wewel, Benjamin Anderson, and Michael McDermott find it helpful to explain what they do by describing what they are not. They are not only dentists but may have to surgically remove teeth. They are not plastic surgeons but perform corrective surgery when the face is damaged. They are not orthodontists but may have to realign teeth

and jaws after major injury or growth asymmetry. One thing that makes this group stand out among oral surgeons is their use of technology. They use cone beam CT scans and digital impressions to facilitate diagnosis and treatment. A topographical camera furnishes an exact picture of the area that needs treatment. The doctors consider several options prior to performing surgery, asking, “Can we do this? Should we do this?” With this type of 3D imaging, they can see the details they’ll be facing in advance. This eliminates unpleasant surprises during procedures, helps them

make more educated decisions, and is more comfortable for patients. This advanced imaging is also very useful for patient education. Patients preparing to undergo oral or maxillofacial surgery are often anxious. When the doctors can show the patient what the problem is and precisely how they plan to fix it, much of this anxiety can be relieved. The scheduling process at Midwest Oral Surgery and Dental Implants is designed to accommodate urgent or emergency cases. They know pain doesn’t wait! Blocks of time are left open in the schedule every day so they can address their patients’ urgent needs. They take turns being on call and available when care is urgently needed…even after hours. With four doctors and open-block scheduling, they can see emergency patients the same day. Many private practice dental offices don’t have that freedom. The doctors are truly colleagues, and they strongly believe in the advantage of working as a team. Each doctor has his own office and examination area in which to see patients, but they often take their lunch breaks together and confer with each other on any unusual problems they’ve encountered. Informal conferences with four sets of eyes looking at a problem provides a wealth of experience on which to draw. The doctors look on each patient…each case…as a joint challenge and reward. Many people think of visits to the dentist as painful propositions, and there’s certainly some truth to that! Some

people will put up with all kinds of pain and inconvenience in order to avoid a visit. The problem is that the anxiety a patient feels about getting dental work done can actually make the patient’s experience worse. Anticipation of pain causes anxiety, and an anxious patient is difficult to work on. The doctors at Midwest Oral Surgery and Dental Implants aim to make any experience in their office as enjoyable as possible. Dr. Wees recalls a teenager’s anxiety over having his wisdom teeth extracted. Using advanced anesthetic techniques relaxes the patient, eases anxiety, leaves no feeling of pain, and allows the patient a “restful sleep.” The patient wakes up not even realizing the surgery has been done. (This writer can attest to that from previous experience!) The doctor’s goals have been accomplished: The challenge of the patient’s anxiety has been allayed, and the surgery has been successfully performed. All four doctors at Midwest Oral Surgery and Dental Implants are Nebraska natives and began their training at Nebraska colleges (for more background on the doctors, visit www. midwestoms.com). Their common goal is to improve the oral health and well-being of their patients with the latest technology while providing a pain-free and anxiety-free experience. New Year’s Resolutions The Skinny on Weight Loss Programs By Loretta McCollum

The holiday season has come and gone once again, and what a season it was! We ate, we drank, we ate, we laughed, and we ate. Now, we are left to deal with the aftermath of excess, including those pesky postholiday pounds. January is typically the month when we all vow to be healthier and happier, and there’s nothing wrong with that! Maybe you just want to erase the effects of all those Christmas cookies and overindulgence in eggnog, or maybe you have decided that this is the time to really tackle a long-term weight issue. No matter how much weight you want to lose and why, there are multiple weight management choices available to fit today’s hectic lifestyle. Maintaining a healthy body weight is crucial to overall well-being. Being significantly overweight can lead to health complications such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and increased risk of stroke, and it can also take a toll on joints and bones. Conceptually, it’s easy to lose weight, right? Just eat less and exercise more! Well, some of us need a little direction…some of us need to get with a program. Managing eating habits is one of the easiest things we can do to help maintain good health. That’s what makes nutrition counseling one of the most tried and true options for weight loss. Your physician can recommend a registered dietician or a certified nutritionist to work with you in developing a personalized weight loss program. The first step is to schedule an initial consultation

to discuss your medical history and weight loss goals. The dietician or nutritionist will then work with you to develop and implement a meal plan based on your needs. Periodic follow-up appointments track your progress and make plan adjustments as needed. A more specific approach is a metabolic weight loss plan. A consultant will take into consideration your gender, age, body type, and health history to develop a hormone-balancing plan that incorporates nutritional supplements and specific foods to fuel your metabolism. Nutrition or lifestyle coaches work with you throughout the process and continue to provide support to help you maintain your desired weight. The ChiroThin weight loss program is a physician-supervised weight loss program that utilizes a liquid dietary supplement to detox the body and increase metabolism. This supplement ›››

helps your body metabolize fat and use it as energy. It contains amino acids, vitamins, and cell salts. Natural appetite suppressants and energy supplements are also included. The ChiroThin program pairs the supplements with physician supervision and a low-calorie diet to promote successful weight loss without surgery. There are safety guidelines for patients embarking on this treatment, beginning with pre-screening for factors that could complicate the treatment. If the screening presents any challenges, your physician will discuss these factors with you and may suggest you try a different treatment. The ChiroThin program is a 42-day program, and patients have reported losing an average of 20–35 pounds while following the program. Contact your physician for more information. The OPTIFAST program is a medically supervised weight management system that initially utilizes meal replacements and transitions to self-prepared meals over a 26-week period. OPTIFAST is distributed through local weight loss clinics (visit www.optifast.com to find a clinic in your area). Clients are monitored by physicians, dieticians, and behavior management therapists. This program is designed for those individuals with a BMI of 30 or above. In addition to weight loss, OPTIFAST focuses on lifestyle education and long-term weight management. The Ideal Protein program was developed by physicians in France, and it was originally designed for athletes. This option allows clients to purchase products from local retailers and gives them access to an online portal where they can purchase prepared meals, access educational materials, and sign up for personal coaching. In short, these are not your grandmother’s diet plans. Today’s options are much more sophisticated, scientific, and customized. What are the success rates? It really depends on the individual. These programs all offer follow-up for maintenance, but it’s up to the client to take advantage of these services. It’s time to get with the program…no matter which program you choose. With so many choices, you’re sure to find an option that can help you get motivated, get focused, and shed those extra pounds for good! Lighten Up A Little It’s Time to Have Some Fun! “Over-seriousness is a warning sign for mediocrity and bureaucratic thinking. People who are seriously committed to mastery and high performance are secure enough to lighten up.” —Michael J. Gelb So, have we all become a little bit too serious as of late? Has our feeling tone become one of responsibility, intensity, and earnestness? Whatever happened to gaiety, lightness, joy, and fun? I don’t know what it is about “maturing,” but all of a sudden, before we know what has happened, we’re married, have house payments, and, more often than not, we have children who fill up that house. We go from carefree kids to mature, tax-paying citizens. Is this a good thing? Not if we’re grim. “A man’s maturity: that is to have rediscovered the seriousness he possessed as a child at play.” —Friedrich Nietzsche When we are born, we know that our “job” going forth is to seek our joy…to follow our bliss. Have you ever had the experience of being in a public place when a child “discovers” his or her voice for the first time? It is one of my favorite moments to experience. The parents sit by—mortified—as the child screams and squeals with delight. The babies don’t care what others think. They know that they are excited by a newfound “toy” in their body and their voice.

By Janet Van deWalle

Now, some may say that it is important to grow up and be responsible. I beg to differ. Having fun is a core belief of mine. Ask my friends. The question that most often comes out of my mouth is, “So, are you having any fun?” If you consistently answer “no” to this question, then you know you’re on the road to dullness! “Dullness is the coming of age of seriousness.” —Oscar Wilde Now, some may think that dullness is the inevitable evolution of growing up and growing older. Not so! It, like every other experience on this planet, comes down to a decision of—to what will we flow our energy. So, what feels better—dullness or fun? “When you have confidence, you can have a lot of fun. And when you have fun, you can do amazing things.” —Joe Namath Amazing things? Wow—now, that sounds like fun! Seriousness is a feeling tone that many of us have assumed is the adult way to behave. We have followed the perceived rule that we are supposed to be serious as we go through our lives. Maybe it’s time to break those rules. Maybe it’s time to have some fun! “The average person living to age 70 has 613,620 hours of life. This is too long a period not to have fun.” —Author Unknown

The Invasion of the Mind Snatchers Don’t Let Technology Take Over

By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS

Sometimes, I feel like we’ve been invaded—not by body snatchers but by the mind snatchers otherwise known as TECHNOLOGY. I know technology is a good thing, most of the time. Like most good things, there are times when it gets in the way. Several friends, acquaintances, and relatives have expressed a similar view. We went to Yellowstone Park one summer. We stopped often to explore the lakes, streams, and hillside fields. We saw Old Faithful erupt twice (the second time was better). We walked the path around the geysers, noting how one was different from the others. There were crowds of people of all ages and nationalities. Most of the older people were walking, reading signs, and talking about what they saw. Many of the younger people walked with their tablets or phones in front of their faces, taking pictures and videos in order to keep the experience for later. Did they really “see” what they were photographing? Did they notice the varying colors and experience the sounds and smells? Who knows? Technology snatches our minds by demanding our attention. How often are you in a group with at least one person constantly looking at her phone? Is the post or email or text that grabs her attention more important than the conversation going on around her? I read recently that phone use is an addiction…it’s hard to put it away. It’s just so easy to look up a fact or find a reference! I don’t mean to say that this technology is wrong. I understand

when someone keeps tabs on her phone because she is expecting a call about something important: an elderly relative…a traveling child…a business contact…sometimes, other events demand our attention, even when we’re trying to have a conversation. I definitely appreciate technology when I’m traveling. I check in and let the kids know where I’m staying or when I’ll arrive. I look up lodging and call for reservations to make sure there is a room waiting. One time, my grandson and I were on a road trip, and we planned to stop in a nearby town. I pulled over to make a room reservation. There were no rooms available…at all…in the whole town! It was county fair time, and everything was taken. I called other towns nearby…they were full, too. We finally found a vacancy in a town about 100 miles away, and we took it! I also use map apps to find obscure historic sites and weather apps for storm and road conditions, especially when I’m traveling in the winter. Technology is important in our lives, but it shouldn’t take over. We should still talk with people. We should see the sights in person and then maybe take a video or picture for later. If you have the phone habit, you might try to break it. There’s a whole world out there, calling to you…and not always by phone. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Counter Intelligence The Best Countertops for Busy Kitchens

By Robyn V. Powell

Countertops play a central role in how a kitchen functions and looks. We demand much of our countertops—they’re expected to stand up to the rigors of daily food preparation but also serve as the showpiece of a modern kitchen. How do you choose a countertop that will stay beautiful even as it takes a beating? It’s all about finding the material that’s right for your kitchen. If you love the beauty and unique variation found in natural stone, nothing beats the elegance of classic marble. Stylish, timeless marble lends a glamorous and sophisticated feel to any room. Polished or honed, marble is undeniably exquisite in the way it amplifies the light and makes your kitchen glow. Carrara, a less expensive marble, is comparable in price to granite, while the quintessential Italian Calacatta, with its soft gray and gold veining, is on the higher end. Marble is strong and heat-resistant and is a great surface for bakers. However, even sealed marble is subject to staining if spices like cinnamon or cumin aren’t wiped up quickly, and exposure to citrus juice or vinegar can cause etching. Living happily with marble requires a certain mindset. If you can accept that a little wear and tear adds character and you’re prepared for regular maintenance (that is, annual sealing), then it’s well worth it. If, however, you prefer a lower-maintenance natural stone, there are hundreds of beautiful, one-of-a-kind granite slabs to choose from. Granite is more affordable than most marble, it’s extremely durable, and, with the proper sealant,

it’s highly resistant to heat, staining, and moisture. If a subtle, nuanced look is more your style, consider soapstone. These natural stones are sturdy and resist wear and heat; however, they are porous and require regular sealing after installation. Slate, limestone, and travertine are also natural products that offer unique natural variation and are good countertop choices. Handsome slate, available in beautiful shades of deep charcoal, gray, black, and dark green, has less variation and more subtle patterning than granite or marble, making it easier to produce more uniform countertops. Nonporous and versatile, slate doesn’t require sealing and works well in kitchens, bathrooms, and wet bars. If you’re considering natural stone, it’s always best to make the trip to the stone yard. Due to the extensive variation of color and patterning found in individual slabs, you’ll want to examine them closely. When you see one you love—reserve it. If durability and low maintenance are your priorities, consider quartz or an engineered stone countertop. Quartz comes in a wide array of attractive colors. Because it is made ›››

mostly of quartz, it looks and behaves like natural stone, resisting scratches and burns. However, a quartz countertop also contains man-made resins and polymers, making it non-porous and essentially maintenancefree. Quartz can be as pricey as granite or marble. Other currently popular options to consider are stainless steel, concrete, and butcher block. While each offers unique advantages, they are neither maintenancefree nor budget-friendly. Both stainless steel and concrete are extremely durable. Stainless steel, often found in commercial kitchens, is practically impervious to heat and bacteria, but it can dent, shows fingerprints, and rings in at the highest price point. Concrete requires regular sealing to prevent cracking. Butcher block lends a warm, classic feel to a kitchen and requires regular oiling to protect against moisture. While it can be refinished or sanded down to remove scratches, it ranks low in heat resistance. For budget-friendly options, tile and laminate fit the bill. Porcelain tile stands up to heat, is scratch- and stain-resistant, and is easy to repair without having to replace the whole countertop. Larger tiles reduce the number of grout lines; however, grout is subject to moisture and can become discolored over time. Laminate is easy to clean and comes in a wide range of colors, but it can easily stain, burn, scratch, or peel off. Another consideration is the type of sink. A top-mounted sink, dropped in after the countertop has been installed, can be used with any material. An undermounted sink pairs best with waterproof materials like stone, quartz, stainless steel, or concrete. For a totally seamless look, consider stainless steel or solid surface materials that can be used for both sink and countertop. Bathroom counters see less wear and tear than kitchens, but it’s still important to choose materials that resist staining and chipping. Accuracy is critical when it comes to well-fitting countertops, so have your fabricator take final measurements. Make sure your contract specifies the countertop thickness and finish and includes any fees for the removal of old counters and for cutouts for sinks, faucets, or cooktops. Finally, be sure to specify any desired edge treatments, such as bullnose or miter edge, and backsplash heights. Heafey Hoffman Dworak Cutler has Risen from the Ashes Grace, Dignity, and Love of Community By Joey Hoffman

Crayola-drawn rainbows and smiley faces are hardly your typical funeral home decor, and you don’t often hear about community members consoling the staff at a funeral home—usually, it’s the other way around. However, in January of 2016, after a fire razed the Heafey Hoffman Dworak Cutler building at 78th and West Center Road, handillustrated notes of support poured in from an unlikely bunch: Mrs. Fitch’s first-grade class at St. Stephen the Martyr. Along a bright hallway in the newly-constructed building at the same location, the framed collection is displayed like a tribute to the Golden Rule. Partner Bill Cutler III, an affable man, shares how the youngsters’ gifts, along with other shows of support from the public, affected him. “I’ve met lots of wonderful people in my career, and the fire has demonstrated to me just how kind people can be,” Bill says. “You look on the wall and read the notes from the first graders. Every time we would feel sorry for ourselves, we would re-read them. I tell you, they’re just heartwarming.” Bill wanted to meet these caring young people, so he visited the youngsters’ classroom. “They’d come up to me and describe what they drew and what they wrote,” he says, tickled. Born in 1948 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Bill was almost as young as those students when he committed to his future profession. “Truly, from the time I was in fourth grade, I wanted to do this,” he shares. “Maybe it’s because my father was working all the time and that’s where he was. I was always fascinated with our family business.” Over the years, Bill’s responsibilities at the funeral home evolved. As a pre-teen, he kept busy cutting the grass, running the vacuum cleaner, and washing the cars. Eventually, he moved up to embalmer and, ultimately, funeral director. Bill adds, “Following in my footsteps in time-honored tradition, Bill Cutler IV began apprenticing with the funeral home at an early age. Today he works side by side with me and is an integral part of the family business.” The uncommon color of their fleet of automobiles has a back story which would have made Dennis the Menace proud, and it’s one of the unique aspects of being part of a family business. “When I got out of mortuary school, we had black cars,” Bill recalls. “There’s nothing prettier than a black car—if it’s spotless. Our cars always had to be spotless. Dad had a rule that I had to wash the cars before every funeral—one in the morning, one at night. I could wash the cars one time, and if we had two funerals in one day, they’d be dirty again.” “Dad was getting a new hearse and limousine, and

40

January 2018

I said, ‘Dad, let’s get white cars with black tops.’ He said, ‘No, we’ve always had black cars, since 1900.’ When Dad went on vacation, I called the dealer and said we wanted white cars with black tops. When the cars came in, the dealer called. ‘We’ve got your cars here, Bill,’ he told me. I said, ‘Don’t bring them today; hold off for a week or so.’ He said, ‘Your dad doesn’t know these cars are white, does he?’” “My dad was standing in his office, in front of his gold velvet drapes, when the dealer called again. ‘Bill, your cars are here.’ Dad turned back and looked out the window, then put his top coat on and headed for the door. The dealer asked, ‘Can I get a check for those cars?’ Dad replied, ‘If my son wants to write you a check, fine.’” Bill stops to laugh, fondly recalling his dad’s reaction. Founded in 1852, Heafey Hoffman Dvorak Cutler has grown from one small funeral home in Council Bluffs (“The business was probably 5 percent of what we have now,” Bill shares) to four locations today. It has been an undertaking from the heart, thanks to professional and compassionate staff members who treat clients like family. “Like my dad used to say, ‘We can do anything a family wants as long as it’s not illegal or immoral.’” “My father had a great pride in the family business,” Bill concludes. “People may not understand when we say this, but we don’t look at it as a business. I love helping people, and I get to do what I love every day. If you think about it, when people come here, they’re never glad to see me, in a professional way. Many are lost, and they don’t know what to do. Hopefully, we become friends of theirs.” Grief and healing services are available, including support groups and even a weekly Wednesday luncheon program at Garden Café in Rockbrook. “Come dine with others who understand. You don’t have to eat alone,” their website says. For more information on the services offered by Heafey Hoffman Dvorak Cutler, call 402-391-3900 or visit heafeyheafey. com. Stay Warm This Winter! Water Heaters and Furnaces

By Anne Yankus

Winter is finally in full swing! If you want to keep the cold at bay, there are two things you need to make sure are up and running: your water heater and your furnace. These may not be the most exciting of appliances, but wow—you would miss them if they were gone! Like everything else, they eventually need service and replacement. To keep that from happening on the coldest, most inopportune day of the year, it’s best to stay ahead of the game by being well-informed. The first things to know are how old your water heater is (look for this info on the label) and how long you can expect it to last. Traditional tank water heaters are designed to last eight to 12 years. Tankless water heaters can last 20 years or more, depending on how well they’re maintained. A good time to start thinking about replacing your water heater is within two years of the end of its typical lifespan. While you don’t have to replace your water heater at precisely age 12 or 20, the longer you push it, the more likely it is to meet a catastrophic end. The best way to tell if your water heater is in need of replacement is by watching for a few specific tells: rustcolored water, rumbling noises when it kicks on, and water pooling around its base. Rusty water (specifically when warm) is indicative of corrosion inside your water heater. Rumbling noises are caused by sediment that builds up at the base of the water heater as it ages. Sediment buildup is inevitable in

older water heaters. It will cause a drop in the unit’s efficiency and accelerate the damage and wear on the inside of the tank. Finally, water around the base of the unit is indicative of leaks caused by general wear and tear. When you replace your old water heater, you don’t necessarily have to go with the same type. There are many different options to consider when purchasing a new water heater: conventional storage (tank) water heaters, tankless “ondemand” units, heat pumps, solar water heaters, and tankless coil/indirect units. Some things to consider when choosing your next water heater are what fuel type is available in your home (that is, gas or electric), what size heater you need, energy efficiency, and, of course, cost. Determining what size water heater you’ll need requires a bit of math. For example, tankless/on-demand water heaters are rated at the maximum temperature rise for your plumbing’s flow rate, so you’ll need to determine your home’s water flow rate. For heat pumps or tank heaters, however, you’ll need to figure out what your peak hour water demand is. (There is a ›››

helpful worksheet online at energy.gov/ energysaver/sizing-new-water-heater). If you can’t sort out what you need, a contractor can help. Of course, hot water can only do so much good in a cold house, and that’s where your furnace comes in. New furnaces last around 20–30 years, though older models don’t have quite the longevity that newer ones do. If your furnace is over 15 years old, it may be due for a replacement. There are several furnace types to consider: gas furnaces, which can be single-stage, two-stage, or modulating; electric furnaces; and heat pumps, which can be air-sourced or groundsourced/geothermal. When choosing a type of furnace, you’ll also want to factor in efficiency. Furnace efficiency is determined by the unit’s annual fuelutilization-efficiency (AFUE) rating, and current models range from 78–97 percent AFUE. Higher AFUE percentages mean a more expensive unit, but that additional cost is often recouped in the long-term energy savings of a more efficient furnace. In fact, increased fuel efficiency is one of the biggest strides we’ve made in furnace technology over the last 30 years. Though our houses may be bigger, with more appliances and electronics that need power, our energy usage is down 10 percent per household since 1980. We also have made strides in interconnectivity among appliances, which means we can now see precise data on how well our furnaces are functioning in real time. This information can help us more accurately predict our energy needs. If you’re not due for a replacement furnace, you may still be due for some furnace maintenance. Experts recommend having your furnace (and your entire HVAC system, for that matter) inspected annually. Regular professional inspections can prolong the overall life of your furnace and prevent potential health hazards (like carbon monoxide leaks). Identifying small problems before they become big problems can save you from getting into a pinch when the heat dies on the coldest day of the year. With regular maintenance and mindful replacement, you should be all set to stay cozy and warm through the winter this year and every year. To Your Good Health

Change Your Body, Change Your Life Surgical Success for Weight Loss

By Ashley Anderson

Diet and weight are big concerns these days for adults and medical professionals alike. The number of overweight and obese adults rises with each new year, and many people resolve on New Year’s Eve to lose weight and be healthier. Unfortunately, many people are quick to abandon these ambitious goals and are back to normal—until New Year’s Eve rolls around again. Don’t let that happen to you this year! The New Year is a great time to turn your health goals into action toward a better you. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than one third of adults in the United States are obese. Adults with obesity are at higher risk of many health problems, incur more medical costs annually than non-obese adults, and are much more likely to have heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Body mass index (BMI) is a measurement used to define whether a person is at a healthy weight. BMI is determined by a person’s weight in kilograms divided by her height in meters. A normal BMI is 18 to 25. A BMI of 25 to 30 is in the overweight range, and a BMI of over 30 indicates obesity. Keep in mind that BMI is not the only indicator of obesity, and obesity is not the only indicator of poor health. The calculation of BMI, for example, does not consider your fat-tomuscle ratio, your exercise level, your body type, or your age. It is only one tool for determining overall health, but it can be a useful

starting point. If you have questions about your BMI or whether or not your weight is healthy, you should contact your doctor. When traditional diet and exercise do not result in significant weight loss, surgical weight loss may be in order. Bariatric surgery is a leading treatment for patients carrying an excess of at least 100 pounds. These procedures produce weight loss by restricting the amount of food the stomach can hold or by reducing the amount of calories that the body can absorb. The most common types of bariatric surgeries include gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, adjustable gastric band, and duodenal switch with biliopancreatic diversion. These procedures are performed by surgeons specializing in bariatric and metabolic surgery. Gastric bypass is one of the more common bariatric surgeries for obesity. It involves reducing the size of the stomach and bypassing a portion of the small intestine, thus limiting the

www.womensedition.com

amount of food that can be eaten at once and also the calories that can be absorbed. A sleeve gastrectomy removes a portion of the stomach and forms the remaining portion into a sleeve-like shape. The smaller stomach cannot hold as much food and also produces less of the hormone that produces the urge to eat. In the adjustable gastric band procedure, a band containing an inflatable balloon is placed around the upper part of the stomach. This creates a smaller, pouch-like stomach and narrower opening. Inflating or deflating the balloon changes the amount of food the stomach can hold. The duodenal switch with biliopancreatic diversion is similar to a sleeve gastrectomy in that a large part of the stomach is removed. In addition, part of the small intestine, called the duodenum, is attached to the last part of the intestine, closing off the middle section. Food bypasses most of the small intestine, which limits caloric absorption. The first step toward bariatric surgery is to speak to a medical professional about your weight concerns. You will be referred to a specialist or surgeon for evaluation and to see if you are a good candidate for surgery. Doctors will determine if your organs are healthy enough for surgery and what type of surgery is the best fit for you. Once you and your doctor are comfortable with a surgical option and have determined the best path forward, a date will be scheduled for surgery. Following bariatric surgery, patients should expect regular visits with a medical professional to monitor progress and make adjustments. Typically, patients are paired with a nutrition or diet specialist, a mental health professional, and someone to help with physical activity and exercise. Discipline and focus are required. It takes some time, but a majority of patients lose 50 or more pounds and are able to keep their weight in a manageable range over the long term. After significant weight loss, cosmetic surgery may be required to remove excess skin. Support groups with other people who have undergone bariatric surgery for weight loss can be a great help—ask your doctor where to look for such a group. With the proper treatment and support, many patients can maintain their weight loss and experience greatly improved health conditions after bariatric surgery. An Inside Look

Spring to the Top Elite Cheer and Academy of Martial Arts By Emily Kerr

Equipped with a martial arts dojo, four tumbling and cheer spaces, and a coffee bar for parents, the new Elite Cheer and Academy of Martial Arts is in the final stages of renovation. The new building is located at 3405 Oak View Drive. Upon completion, it will have a deluxe, sky-box style viewing area overlooking the main classroom so that parents may watch their children learn to tumble. The facility offers a wide variety of classes for ages three and up. Kevin Hooker, one of the owners and operators, wears several hats at Elite Cheer. When the business began in 1993, he and his business partner, Lance, coached Lincoln Southeast High School all the way to the national championships. Soon after, they began getting referrals for athletes preparing for cheerleading tryouts. “That kick-started everything,” Kevin recalls. “We went from two to three kids to 30 kids…that’s when we started teaching private lessons.” Currently, Kevin’s day-to-day has evolved into running the business, which has more than 30 employees. “I do not get to coach as much as I want to,” he comments. “The last four years have been dedicated to this building. I am really looking forward to coming back into coaching.” What he finds most rewarding about coaching is, unsurprisingly, the kids. “I knew I wanted to be a coach our first year when we were teaching a group of junior high kids and one of the girls got a skill she had never gotten before,” he shares. “That feeling of their accomplishment just punched me in the face.” One of the great aspects of cheerleading as a sport is that virtually anyone can do it. “Every position has a specific athletic type,” Kevin notes. “As long as kids want to learn, and they want to put in the work to be an athlete, we can get them to be phenomenal athletes.” Using specialized flooring to aid in students’ progression, athletes learn the varying difficulties of jumps and tricks by beginning with certain surface types. “All of our progressions go from softer surface to harder surface,” Kevin explains. “For example, the trampoline is a softer surface than tumble track, which is a bit firmer.” Athletes eventually work their way onto the spring floor and finally onto foam. Kevin stresses that every part of Elite Cheer’s training structure has a specific purpose, giving additional tools for training. For this reason, they have added levels to the traditional 1–5 system. “We broke it down even more because there are so many skill sets in our program. We now have level 1.5, level 2, level 2.5, level 3, level 3.5— just to give us a broader range of training.” Overall, teaching the physical skills of gymnastics and cheer also teaches the young athletes about hard work, dedication, and the payoff for hard work over time. Shawna, a team volunteer and the mother of

one of Elite’s 17-yearold athletes, says her daughter started tumbling at the age of eight and started doing cheer along with her friends. “The girls love it! The coaches push them to work their hardest. It’s good for them; it builds character.” When Kevin first started coaching, there were few rules in cheer competition. Until the establishment of the U.S. All Star Federation (USASF), Elite Cheer essentially had creative liberty to try any move they put their mind to. This, however, is not the case today. “When we started this company, there were basically no rules,” Kevin recalls. “For the last 12 years, we have probably had a new rule set every year.” Like any innovative coach, Kevin takes his team as far as they can go without breaking the rules to impress at competition. An intimate knowledge of the rules can make or break a team at competition, in Kevin’s opinion. “If you do not have experience, you just will not do well.” With a total of 14 teams to coach, Kevin and his staff have their work cut out for them. At Elite Cheer, their philosophy remains that the kids and their best interests always come first. “A lot of our success comes from our coaches,” Kevin says. “I would rather have a coach who loves kids than one who loves gymnastics. I can teach you how to be a gymnastics coach; I cannot teach you how to love kids.” This philosophy has served them well, because students keep coming back. Elite Cheer even has a Legacy Program, in which children of previous students can receive discounted rates on classes. The other side of Elite is the martial arts instruction, where they teach Kenpo Karate and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. According to Kevin, they use martial arts as the vehicle to teach personal development. “Our students develop the skills they need to be successful not only on the mat but, more importantly, at the game of life,” says Kevin. “Building character traits like perseverance, integrity, humility, dedication, respect, discipline, and many others while they reach achievement of their goals helps them to build their self-esteem and confidence. Whether they train for a short time or their entire lifetime, they’ll use these benefits every single day for the rest of their lives.” For more information on this family-oriented training academy, call 402-537-0855. A Tarnished Star Outsmarting the Market? Think Again.

By George Morgan

To grow the retirement dollars in their 401(k) accounts, 90 plus million Americans must choose the best mutual funds. The quality of their retirement may be determined by how wisely they choose. There are approximately 8,500 mutual funds on the market, which is a number unmanageable by even the most seasoned professionals. To make it easier for 401(k) plan participants to choose mutual funds, the employers who sponsor these plans hire financial advisors to cull this down to a more workable number. The average 401(k) investment menu contains between 10 and 100 funds. The financial advisor is responsible for providing a minimum level of education to help the employees in their fund selection. One of the tools used by most financial advisors to provide education to 401(k) participants is Morningstar, which is a financial services company that researches and rates mutual funds. They have been in business for decades and are by far the biggest provider of this type of service. Morningstar has a file on every fund on the market. Each file contains a history of the fund, its style of investing, and its performance experience. Morningstar also provides a rating system based on their projection of the fund’s future performance. Their basic service is free and available to anyone with access to the internet. Those who want more extensive data can pay a monthly fee to access more detailed materials. Over 250,000 pension funds, professional money managers, and high-net-worth individuals pay for these services. Billions of dollars are invested

based upon the data provided by Morningstar. The cornerstone of Morningstar’s service is the performance rating system. It is based on a star rating format: one star for the poorest performers and five stars for the highest performers. The mutual fund companies constantly monitor the number of stars assigned to their funds by Morningstar. Five-star funds can expect to see money pour in from investors, while one-star funds can expect to experience shareholders leaving in droves. For years, millions of people, both inside and outside the financial services industry, have relied on Morningstar as a solid foundation for investment decisions. Then, in October of 2017, a front-page story in the Wall Street Journal read: “Mutual Fund Ratings Are Not What They Seem!” Reporters at the Wall Street Journal examined the records of thousands of Morningstar’s ratings, going back to 2003. What they found was that most of the highly rated funds attracted lots of money but failed to perform.

The Wall Street Journal data show that, after five years, only 12 percent of all funds with a five-star rating retained that coveted rating. Further, 10 percent of these highly rated funds performed so poorly that they ended up carrying the lowest rating (one star). The drop-off in performance among large U.S. stock funds was even more dramatic—significantly for American investors, this is the sector that holds the greatest number of 401(k) dollars. The Wall Street Journal article goes on for two more full pages to explain why Morningstar produces their inaccurate ratings. Most investors, however, are not particularly interested in the reasoning—they just need to know not to trust them. Can it be fixed? The Wall Street Journal concludes: probably not. The story does not end here. A month after the Wall Street Journal ran its report on the validity of Morningstar’s recommendations, they ran a second story, which claimed that many mutual fund companies were running ads that presented the Morningstar data in a misleading fashion. For example, numerous ads claimed that the advertised fund had a Morningstar rating of four…which had been true, two quarters ago. At the time the ads were placed, however, the correct rating was a two, which was consistent with the previous finding of the Wall Street Journal that highly rated funds tended to drop off during the following quarter. What is not known is how many dollars were invested based on the assumption that the fund being purchased was a strong performer. Therefore, we can’t really know how many dollars were lost because of this bait and switch. How should the average investor deal with this thorny situation? The short answer is: index funds. What I have outlined above is part of the bigger picture about the inability of money professionals to outsmart the market. The efforts of money professionals to outperform the market involves a lot of active trading. This is costly, and the expenses are passed on to the individual investor, which reduces their investment return. The use of cost-efficient index funds has blossomed over the past decade and has become the investment vehicle of choice for millions of 401(k) participants. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy.

The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. To determine which investments may be appropriate for you, consult your financial advisor prior to investing. WE

It’s Resolution Time! Exercise Trends for 2018 By Connie Keck

I’m turning the calendar over to begin a new year—2018. Where does the time go? For many of us, New Year’s resolutions abound. Many times, they include health goals like losing weight, toning muscles, increasing energy, or boosting metabolism. How can we find the time for a fitness protocol with so many things demanding our attention? Finding the right facility, the right trainer or coach, and a routine that will challenge us without burning us out seems daunting. Well, maybe it is daunting, but we have to start somewhere. Let’s check out some current fitness styles that might fit the bill. High-intensity, Low-impact: This exercise strengthening protocol provides clients maximum results in minimum time. Facilities like SuperSlow Zone offer workouts that are 20 minutes long and take place on medical-grade machines under the supervision of accredited, certified instructors. Tracking technology offers precise feedback to help clients make progress toward specific goals. Dance Fitness: Dance fitness programs, which have been around for decades, are a combination of aerobic exercise and dance fitness. It is for all ages and fitness levels. Classic playlists motivate participants to keep moving. Each cardio-dance or muscle-toning sequence is choreographed to a specific song. The instructor combines sequences for a full-body workout that’s customized for each class, and the music keeps clients feeling strong all the way through to the final stretch.

High-Intensity Interval Training: This heart-monitored, high-intensity workout is scientifically designed to keep heart rates in a target zone that spikes metabolism and increases energy. This “after burn” refers to the premise that your body keeps burning extra calories for 36 hours after the workout is done. Classes cycle through workouts on a treadmill, on a rower, and on the floor. You can expect to see an estimated loss of 3–5 pounds per week by attending at least 3–5 sessions per week and following a proper nutritional plan. If performance is your goal, you can expect to see an increase in power, speed, and strength after the first two weeks when attending 2–4 sessions per week. CrossFit: In this fitness program, participants perform constant, varied movements at high intensity. These movements reflect the best aspects of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing, and more. CrossFit is designed to be a broad, general, and inclusive fitness routine supported by measurable, observable, and repeatable results. The intensity and varied approach lead to dramatic gains in fitness. Pilates: Abs, anyone? Pilates hits your core unlike any other

A Few Words From One of Our Advertisers: “We have gotten a ton of business from our advertising with Women’s Edition. It’s insane the number of calls we get from the ad. You were right, it took some time to see the results... consistency, inevitably, is truly the key. I also appreciate your customer service and continual follow-up. Women’s Edition has been a great decision to grow my business. If it’s not broken—don’t fix it.”

workout. A key element to Pilates is muscle control and core strength. With a stronger core, you can run faster, reduce back pain, and improve the rest of your workout. Pilates can even improve your sex life by strengthening your pelvic floor muscles. Kickboxing: This high-impact workout keeps your heart rate elevated throughout your session—just one hour of kickboxing can burn 750 calories. There’s no area of the body that kickboxing won’t tighten! You’ll lose fat, tone muscles, build confidence, and learn a new skill, all while having a blast. Standard kickboxing is more like the kicking and punching of boxing. Cardio kickboxing incorporates kicks and punches into an aerobic workout, generally with upbeat music. Spinning: This workout is essentially stationary bike riding, which can help build endurance and melt fat. Choose music that has the right beat to match your pedal stroke, or join a class for added inspiration. Know when to get up and when to stay seated—lifting up from the seat will add intensity at your core, legs, and hips. During relaxed cycling, you can add an upper body workout with hand weights. Barre: Most barre-based classes use a combination of postures inspired by ballet and other disciplines like yoga and Pilates. The barre is used as a prop to balance while doing exercises that focus on isometric training, combined with high reps of small range-of-motion movements. The major benefits of barre workouts are improved posture, muscle definition, weight loss, increased flexibility, and reduced stress. Boot Camp: This workout is modeled on strict military training. Boot camp workouts can vary but usually include a fairly intense mix of strength training and aerobic elements. Participants usually do pullups, pushups, lunges and crunches, as well as drills and sprints. Your local fitness center likely offers some of these classes and may well have some that we haven’t described here. Give them a call or check out their website. Some fitness centers let you try a class for free before you decide to sign up—be sure to ask. Personal training is also something to consider if you are new to exercising (or if it’s been a long time!). Before starting any fitness or weight loss program, it’s important to consult with your health care provider. Then grab a bottle of water, get moving, and get fit! Team You! Life Coaching Can Help You Up Your Game By Joey Hoffman

Oprah has a life coach? Talk about an endorsement! If you’re a human female living on this planet, you likely know the Grand Dame of personal development and her “I’m flawed, too” modus operandi. While Oprah seems to be at the top of her game, she readily admits that she has asked for, and received, professional help reaching her lofty goals. Martha Beck, Oprah’s life coach, is a three-degree Harvard graduate and the best-selling author of titles like “Finding Your Own North Star” and “Finding Your Way in a Wild New World: Reclaim Your True Nature to Create the Life You Want.” For years, she has helped Oprah become her personal and professional best and has inspired her to teach others how to do the same. She is also president of Martha Beck, Inc., which offers a life coach training and certification program based on her books and experience. For potential clients, her website offers a link to professionals with a range of certifications and specialties and who work in a wide range of states and countries. What is a life coach? According to WebMD, these professionals “provide the drive and guidance their clients need to improve their careers, relationships, and lives. They help clients to recognize their skills and dreams, refocus their life’s goals, and move past challenges that stand in the way of those goals.” Tony Robbins, the hyper-successful, over-caffeinated entrepreneur, philanthropist, and

are sabotaging you and keeping you from true connection. Get the tools you need to reignite passion and fulfillment in relationships new and old. It’s important to understand that life coaching is not the same as psychotherapy, though many people would benefit from both. The International Coach Federation describes the differences like this: “Therapy deals with healing pain, dysfunction, and conflict within an individual or in relationships. The focus is often on resolving difficulties arising from the past that hamper an individual’s emotional functioning in the present, improving overall psychological functioning, and dealing with the present in more emotionally healthy ways.” “Coaching, on the other hand, supports personal and professional growth based on self-initiated change in pursuit of specific actionable outcomes. These outcomes are linked to personal or professional success. Coaching is future-focused. While positive feelings/ emotions may be a natural outcome of coaching, the primary focus is on creating actionable strategies for achieving specific goals in one’s work or personal life. The emphases in a coaching relationship are on action, accountability, and follow through.” People who hire a life coach seek to reach their full potential. Some may feel like they’re running on two cylinders instead of six. Others may struggle with a life transition, like divorce, death of a loved one, birth of a child, or the loss of a job. Some desire healing, decreased stress, or more freedom or success, and they do not know how to go about getting it—or what they have tried has not worked. As in any profession, the difference in coaches may depend on training and certifications. Certification depends on written and oral exams. Credential types are based on the number of client coaching hours you complete. That said, if you connect with a coach who may not have traditional accreditation yet seems worthy of your time and trust, you may want to consider hiring her. Are you flawed, too? If you’re feeling stalled in your life, consider hiring a life coach. Sometimes, all you need is a gentle push in the right direction. The Key to Auto Insurance How Well Do You Know Your Policy? By Brennan Hallock

Many drivers only learn the details of their auto insurance coverage when something goes wrong. Imagine that a storm has damaged your car or that you’ve just had a fender-bender. You’re already having a bad day—is that really when you want to find out that the insurance policy you’ve been shelling out for isn’t worth the money you’ve been paying? It’s important to understand your insurance coverage from the start so you can avoid disputes when you need to file a claim. The first thing to know is what type of coverage you have. Auto insurance comes in several types, but the major three are liability, medical, and comprehensive/collision. Nearly every plan will include liability coverage, but plans vary based on what other coverages they include. Liability is the most basic insurance plan and can often be purchased by itself. This type of insurance covers damages caused by your vehicle to another vehicle, a person, or other property. When you are at fault for damages, the cost can easily exceed your financial assets. This is why liability coverage is always a good idea. It’s so important that it’s required, in most states, in order to own and drive a vehicle. Medical coverage is different from your regular health insurance. Medical payments coverage, one form of medical coverage, pays for medical costs to drivers and passengers in the event of an accident and is generally optional. Personal injury protection, sometimes called “no-fault insurance,” is a type of medical coverage required in many states; it helps pay for medical bills no matter who is at fault for the accident. Collision insurance covers damage that your vehicle sustains in a traffic accident. For many Americans, their vehicle is one of their most expensive assets, which makes collision insurance a smart choice. Comprehensive coverage pays for damage that your vehicle sustains in non-traffic incidents, including events such as fire, theft, vandalism, falling objects, and natural disasters. It’s smart to do some research and ask some questions before choosing an insurance plan. For example, a vehicle under lease has different requirements than a vehicle that is owned. Leased vehicles are often required to have liability, collision, and comprehensive coverage. Even though the driver does not own the vehicle, she will be expected to pay for this coverage. Some other questions to ask: How much is the car worth? How old is the vehicle? What will the vehicle be used for (work, long-distance driving, recreation)? Will the car be parked in a location vulnerable to theft or vandalism? What state is the vehicle being insured in? The answers to these questions will help determine what kind of insurance is necessary.

58

January 2018

If the vehicle is more susceptible to theft or vandalism, it is often a good idea to get comprehensive coverage. On the other hand, if the vehicle is older and not worth very much money, it may be better to just get liability—the insurance company will only pay up to the vehicle’s market value, anyway. Insurance requirements vary from state to state. You can find your local requirements on the website for your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Once you know what type of insurance you want and need, it’s time to choose an insurance company. Some investigative work should be done to determine what auto insurance company is the right fit for you and your vehicle. This may involve talking to others about their coverage and how their agents handled their claims, but it also may involve contacting the company on social media to see how well they respond, checking the Better Business Bureau’s ratings of the company, reading online customer reviews, and comparing pricing and coverage of at least three different companies. This will help determine in advance whether a company generally follows through on paying a claim. Auto insurance needs can also change over time. Once a satisfactory insurance provider has been found, it is still good to re-evaluate periodically. This is especially important if you move, purchase a new vehicle, file a claim, or add a new driver. Even if there is no need to change insurance providers, a driver may be eligible for new discounts or a better rate. Learning the details of auto insurance before something goes wrong will leave you in a much better situation should an accident occur. A traffic accident is always stressful, regardless of who was at fault and how much damage or injury occurred. Doing a little bit of research will help you understand what your insurance is actually doing for you. Seasons of Life

When You Didn’t Know You Had to Go Finding Relief From Urinary Incontinence By Julie Kuntze

Urinary incontinence can be defined as the accidental discharge of urine due to the loss of bladder control...but when it’s getting in the way of your daily life, the medical definition doesn’t much matter. While urinary incontinence is not a disease itself, it can be a symptom (or result) of certain conditions, and its severity can range from annoying to debilitating. Urinary incontinence affects both men and women, though the National Institutes of Health note that women experience the condition twice as often as men. There are various types of urinary incontinence, but the most common are stress incontinence (leaks occur during activity like running, coughing, or laughing), urge incontinence (also known as overactive bladder, marked by the strong and sudden urge to urinate), or mixed incontinence (a combination of the two). Factors that can contribute to this condition include birth defects, chronic coughing, neurological problems, physical inactivity, obesity, and advanced age. In addition, a history of prostate cancer can increase a man’s chances of experiencing urinary incontinence, while genetics, race, childbirth, menopause, pelvic organ prolapse, and pregnancy all increase the risk for a woman. Other conditions, from bladder infections to multiple sclerosis and diabetes, may also increase the odds of urinary incontinence. The best treatment for urinary incontinence depends on the type and severity of your condition. Urge incontinence can sometimes be treated effectively by medications classified as anticholinergic. Bulking agent injections (often in the form of collagen) may be recommended for patients suffering from stress incontinence; these work by thickening the lining of the urethra to create resistance against the flow of urine. Self-help techniques and certain behavior modifications may be recommended by healthcare providers for both stress and urgency incontinence. If medical and behavioral interventions fail to provide you with adequate relief from incontinence, there are surgical options that are minimally invasive and, typically, quite effective. Surgical treatment for urgency incontinence might aim to increase bladder storage capabilities, to limit nerve impulses to the bladder muscles, or to divert urine flow. Stress incontinence can also be treated surgically. Some of the procedures can typically be performed on an outpatient basis, with no need for a postop catheter. While the methods vary, the goal is to support the urethra in order to better control urine output. The mid-urethral sling procedure consists of inserting a sling around the urethra to hold it in the right position and to put a little pressure on it (which helps it retain urine). Colposuspension involves lifting the neck of the bladder into a more favorable position.

60

January 2018

Discuss the risks and benefits of these procedures with your physician and ask her if you’re a good candidate for surgery. Physical therapy can help treat incontinence, whether it resolves a mild form of the condition or aids in resolving a more complex issue alongside another treatment option. Therapists may advise patients to empty their bladder regularly (and particularly before physical activity), abstain from caffeine, avoid heavy lifting, perform Kegel exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor, and urinate on a regular, frequent schedule (whether it feels like you have to go or not). Therapists will guide patients in exercises specifically designed to strengthen weak pelvic floor muscles. Various tools and therapeutic devices, such as biofeedback, vaginal cones, or electrical stimulation, may also be used to improve muscle tone or teach specific exercises. Most healthcare providers can knowledgeably work with patients who are experiencing urinary incontinence or recognize when symptoms warrant a referral to a specialist. Some, on the other hand, have not been as well educated and continue to consider urinary incontinence to simply be part of the aging process that must be endured. Be prepared to advocate for yourself. If your primary care provider doesn’t think you need treatment, make an appointment with a specialist like a geriatrician, a urogynecologist (an OB/GYN with additional training in urology), or a urologist. There is no magic pill that can eliminate a person’s risk of developing urinary incontinence, but there are a few steps anyone can take to minimize the chances. Maintaining a healthy weight and abstaining from smoking (which can lead to chronic coughing) will reduce excess pressure on the bladder. Experts recommend minimizing the consumption of substances that can irritate the bladder, like caffeine, alcohol, carbonated drinks, spicy foods, and citrus foods and flavorings. Find long-lasting relief from urinary incontinence. Make an appointment and talk to a health professional today. Great Escapes

Park City, Utah Skiing, Snowboarding, and the Sundance Kid By Jackie Williams

The New Year has started, and the busy holiday season has finally come to an end. Is it just me, or do you need a vacation? It is time for a winter wonderland escape. Pack up your family and head over to Park City, Utah. Park City is a family-friendly location with five-star amenities, so everyone will have a great time. The snow is some of the best in the country, and your travel agent can book you all sorts of deals. Park City is only 35 minutes from the Salt Lake City International Airport and has two ski resorts: Deer Valley Resort and Park City Mountain Resort. Deer Valley consistently receives national accolades for being the best ski resort in North America. Park City Mountain Resort is the country’s largest lift-assisted ski area. This January is an especially fantastic time to come, as the month will bring the annual Sundance Film Festival and the 2018 Visa Freestyle International competition, which will serve as a U.S. selection event for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang. Better yet, January is Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month, so there are several promotions at the resorts for beginners

to learn or for the experienced to hone their skills. The excitement in Park City will be bustling! Home to the Winter Olympic Games in 2002, the city has changed quite a bit from its history as a silver mining town. Now, Park City is known for having the largest concentration of luxury accommodations you can ski in/ski out of. There are 150 restaurants to choose from and more than 100 local shops and art galleries to keep you busy when you’re off the slopes. Park City is also known as the “Festival City” of the Rocky Mountains, with something going on every month. Of course, you can’t come to Utah without skiing or snowboarding. Since the two resorts are right there, how do you choose? It might help you to know that Deer Valley is for skiers only. Park City Mountain allows both skiers and snowboarders and is on the Epic Pass list of resorts. With 300 inches of powder every year, winter is always the perfect time to visit. January 13th, which, according to historical data, is the “golden winter day” with the highest likelihood of snowfall. If you prefer to try something new, Park City offers unparalleled opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. If you want more of a thrill, try extreme tubing or snow biking. Do you prefer to be a spectator while you’re vacationing? You’ll be happy to know that the five Olympic venues that Park City constructed for the 2002 Winter Games are still available for athletes to enjoy. You can find many of the national teams training here. Watch as they train for Nordic ski jumping, bobsledding, the luge, and more. Guests can even take a ride on the Olympic track for the Winter Comet Bobsled experience, one of the longest slides in the world! If you are looking for a slower pace, hop on a horse-drawn sleigh for a ride around town or enjoy the silent panoramic views from a hot air balloon. Another plus to visiting Park City is that you don’t need to rent a car. Transportation is plentiful—you can even take a shuttle from the airport to town and then use the free bus and trolleys on and around Main Street. Put on your warm boots for the Park City Gallery Stroll the last Friday of every month, when the city’s art galleries showcase special exhibits and art events. If you like architectural art, check out the more than 60 buildings along Main Street in Park City that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Don’t forget the Sundance Film Festival, which runs January 18th–28th in 2018. The 10-day festival brings over 40,000 visitors to the area to watch thousands of films in venues around town. Originally, the U.S./Utah Film Festival was created to bring attention to the opportunities for filming. It wasn’t until actor Robert Redford founded the Sundance Institute to inspire aspiring filmmakers and renamed it the Sundance Film Festival that it developed into the event it has become today, with the reputation for bringing success to indie titles on the big screen. There you have it! Park City, Utah, is a great destination that is easy to get to, easy to get around, and has lots of activities for the whole family to enjoy, both on and off the snow. It’s just as beautiful in the summertime to visit on your second go-round. Fly to Park City this January and make sure to check out its Sundance kid. Enterprising Ideas

Bricks & Mortar Bar and Bistro The Old Market’s Hidden Gem By Sally Kline

With the beginning of the New Year, we felt it was time to revisit a hidden gem tucked into a corner of the Old Market: Bricks & Mortar Bar and Bistro. The venue is located just off the beaten path, at 11th and Jones. Happy hour is a great time to check it out. “Our happy hour runs every day we are open—Tuesday through Saturday, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.,” notes owner Janet Van deWalle. “On Friday and Saturday nights, we also have a reverse happy hour from 10 p.m. until midnight.” Janet shares that Bricks & Mortar has developed a reputation for the best happy hour in the Old Market, and it’s easy to see why. “Our specials include half price on all 25-plus wines by the glass, half price on specialty cocktails, $1 off all beer, and a great happy hour food menu. Our guests come for the specials, but they stay way past happy hour for the ambience, the food, and the service.” “Bricks & Mortar is the perfect place for a romantic evening for two, happy hour with your coworkers, a girls’ night out, dinner with your family, or an escape from the craziness of the day,” Janet continues. “We have regulars who join us almost every night for a glass of wine or a cocktail, just to unwind, sit at the bar, and talk to friends.” (Does that remind anyone else of a certain Boston bar where “everybody knows your name”?) Bricks & Mortar is also a very popular location to host a corporate cocktail party, corporate meeting, wedding rehearsal, or wedding reception. “We also excel as a fun place for bachelorette parties and wedding and baby showers,” says Janet. Bricks & Mortar was recently named by N.P. Dodge as one of the “10 Best Places to Throw a Party in Omaha.” Janet was honored to be in such good company, she says. “We were included with some other terrific Omaha venues!” The venue was designed by an architect who designs wine tasting rooms in the Pacific Northwest, and it’s unlike any other place in the city. “A comment that I consistently hear from our guests is that Bricks & Mortar is beautiful…I agree!” “None of this could have happened without the great team on board here at Bricks & Mortar,” Janet explains. Head Chef Kelly Michael Wajda is a native of Omaha. “Kelly joined us several months ago and brings an attention to detail to every dish he creates,” Janet says. Kelly draws his inspiration from his experience being stationed with the Navy in New Orleans and Virginia. Now back in Omaha with his family, he focuses on Asian and Latin cuisine. “He showcases his passion and talent in our new menu, which he created to complement our extensive wine list,” Janet elaborates. “He uses feedback from our guests to grow as a chef, and he’s always looking

In 1996, she faced becoming a single mom with three children to support. She didn’t have any work experience outside the home, so she entered the restaurant industry at entry level—waiting tables. Tamara was pleasantly surprised to find that she really enjoyed the friendly, fast-paced, and competitive work environment. “I have served, bartended, and managed in a variety of dining establishments,” she shares. After 21 years in the restaurant industry, Tamara is the lead bartender for Bricks & Mortar. “Over the years, I have met many people from all walks of life, and I use my many years of experience to provide first-class service to our customers,” Tamara asserts. “I enjoy what I do, and I am determined to work hard and always provide a pleasant dining experience.” Janet describes the last four and a half years of owning Bricks & Mortar Bar and Bistro as the most intense learning experience of her life. “I have always appreciated the restaurant industry. After owning this restaurant, my respect for those in the industry has skyrocketed!” Her general manager, Manny Chavez, recently left the restaurant to pursue other interests, and Janet takes this opportunity to thank him publicly. “Manny is the person responsible for bringing Bricks & Mortar to the point that it is today,” Janet shares. “My heartfelt thanks go out to him and his intense hard work to bring me this great team…to create the restaurant. I could not have done this without him. Thank you, Manny!” Bricks & Mortar Bar and Bistro is open at 1037 Jones Street, Tuesday through Thursday, from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, from 4 p.m. to midnight. Call the restaurant at 402-934-0005 or call Janet directly at 402-681-8203. You can check them out online at bricksandmortarbarandbistro.com. Stop in soon! WE

The Green Thumb

Flex Your Green Thumb Overwintering Your Gardening Skills By Sharon Knierim

It’s easy to let our gardening skills get rusty during winter’s harshest months. We’re busy thinking about snow tires and road conditions, and gardening is the last thing that many of us have on our minds. It is pretty rare that we actually spend lengthy amounts of time out of doors in our gardens. Although gardening seems to get bumped off the daily to-do list during these cold and wet months, it only takes a glance out the patio door to set us to dreaming once again of the wonderful times we’ve had in our gardens and yards…and the wonderful times yet to come, just as soon as the weather warms up again. Sometimes, we hear newbie gardeners wondering if all the effort and planning are worthwhile. Gardening is, after all, a somewhat laborious endeavor, not to be taken lightly. If you are an experienced gardener, you can agree that gardening gets into our blood. We are easily swept into the tide of hoeing, watering, weeding, and planting before we realize just how involved we have become. To some people, gardening is something of an art form; to others, it’s more like a fever. Once we begin gardening, we don’t want to stop. Even when we are not active in the garden, we are observing what other gardeners have achieved and thinking about how we can improve on what we have already

done. Shall I plant this perennial here? Would that shrub thrive better over there? What should I do with my tulips after they have bloomed? Gardening brings people together and helps us make new friends. As we gain experience, we are willing to try something new on a more frequent basis. My gardening career began when I planted two six-packs of orange marigolds, not knowing that, as the years passed, gardening would become one of the most important parts of my life. Gardening can bring pleasure, provide food crops, satisfy a desire to be creative, and help us find our own identities while we bring happiness to others. However, there is a darker side to gardening. There will be disappointments in gardening. To be honest, every gardener, and every garden, faces challenges. Maybe

the neighbor’s dog likes to dig in the soil. Perhaps a family of rabbits moves in one year—they will eat everything from tulips to radishes to cucumbers, and they show no interest in sharing. Rabbits are easily outdone by herds of deer (or even just one hungry deer!) traveling through the garden. Because human development is shrinking the natural habitat for deer and decreasing their ability to find food, they love to stop and eat at our garden buffets. A garden can be invaded so quickly by animals and insects and fungi, it can make a gardener’s head spin! The fickle moods of Mother Nature cannot be ignored. Too much rain, too little rain, or wildly fluctuating temperatures can often make or break the success or beauty of even the most well-planned and wellexecuted garden. Hailstorms are perhaps the most heartbreaking of all garden problems. Don’t get too discouraged! Even after serious hail damage, a garden often makes an attempt to regenerate itself; you can help make that possible with a little effort and lots of patience. How do we combat all these potential threats to a garden? Keeping our skills sharp will give us the edge on every animal, germ, and capricious mood of Mother Nature. Winter is an excellent time to hone your skills and knowledge regarding the garden. These days, resources are available everywhere to inform us and to help us enjoy the art of gardening. Whether you plant a canning garden, an orchard or vineyard, or a narrow flower border, staying ahead of the learning curve will garner the greatest success. Possibly the best method of keeping our skills sharp is spending time with other gardeners. Comparing notes and experience with seasoned gardeners is very productive. Gardeners are like fishermen and golfers in that we love to talk about our successes! Seasoned gardeners are always willing to speak to novices and answer any and all gardening questions. Their advice is incredibly valuable, even to other experienced gardeners. Whether you grab a book or magazine, check out some websites, or talk to other gardeners, take some time this winter to enhance your gardening knowledge and know-how. Winter is the perfect time to get ready for spring. Editor’s Note: Sharon Knierim has been a Master Gardener since 2003 through Iowa State University. She lives on a small farm in Western Iowa and looks forward to sharing her passion for gardening each month with her green-thumbed reader friends. WE January 2018

Cuddly Critters

Be Sure to Spay and Neuter Simple Surgery Benefits Pets and Owners By Emily Kerr

With so many great pets out there in need of loving homes, it is essential for pet owners to spay and neuter their furry family members for the good of the community and the overall health of their loved ones. With so many unplanned cat and dog litters, responsible pet owners need to take preventative action and spay and neuter their animals. Not only is spaying and neutering a great decision for the good of the community and overpopulation of cats and dogs, it can prevent health and behavioral issues for your pet down the road. Cats, once in heat, never stop cycling with the seasons. The actions of an animal in heat can be manic and may lead to problematic behavior, including trying to get outside to mate, yowling, and urine marking (sometimes, throughout the house). Once an animal’s hormones have set in and this cycle of behavior has started, it can be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to stop. One of the biggest dangers to a pet’s well-being is if it experiences hormonal aggression and gets into a fight with another animal. Injuries from fights, as well as sexual contact between animals, is how feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus are spread. In addition to avoiding unwanted pregnancy, there are numerous positive outcomes from spaying and neutering. For felines, health benefits include the prevention of uterine and mammary cancer. Spaying also prevents breast cancer, which is 50 percent fatal in dogs and 90 percent fatal in cats, according to pets. webmd.com. If animals are spayed before they go into heat, the risk of developing mammary gland cancer is eliminated completely. Male dogs are at risk for testicular cancer, prostatitis, and other health issues that can be easily prevented by neutering. Generally speaking, neutering applies to male animals and spaying applies to females. (Either surgery is sometimes referred to as “altering” your pet.) Males are neutered by removing both testicles in a relatively simple surgery. The surgical site will be a simple skin incision that generally heals within a week. Pets can be back on their feet in as little as 24 hours. Spaying consists of an ovarian hysterectomy, which is the removal of the ovaries and uterus. For this procedure, the veterinarian must go through the muscle wall and into the body cavity; thus, your female pet will need at least a week to 10 days to recover. Recovery time can vary, depending on the sex and age of your pet. According to veterinarians, the ideal age at which to have your pet spayed or neutered is between six and eight months. The main reason for this is to ameliorate the risks associated with anesthesia, which is the highest risk of surgery and can have greater side effects on an older animal. At this ideal age, animals have a stronger liver and

more body fat to absorb the anesthetic more easily. However, Humane Societies alter animals as young as six weeks old for the sake of population control, so speak to your vet to decide what is right for your pet. Larger breeds of dogs also have a bit of flexibility as to when they may be neutered, as some studies say it is good to wait until they are old enough for their growth plates to have fused. The key is to get your pet spayed or neutered before its hormones have reached optimum levels and it starts exhibiting unwanted behaviors—and, of course, before it produces any unwanted litters! Spaying or neutering a pet is affordable—it usually costs a couple hundred dollars or less. If the cost is prohibitive, contact your local Humane Society for help in finding a lower-cost program. If paying for spaying or neutering sounds expensive, consider the cost of caring for an unplanned litter! More food, vaccinations, time, and energy are all needed to care for a larger animal family. Spaying and neutering also helps save on costly vet bills in the future because your pet won’t be so eager to get outside and get into a scuffle with other animals. There are so many great dogs and cats out there already looking for a loving home. Do yourself, your pets, and your community a favor—be sure to spay and neuter. You’ll know you’ve done what you can to keep your pets happy and healthy for as long as possible. Positive Perspective

Self-Sabotage Are You Getting in Your Own Way? When someone tries to sabotage us, we seem to easily notice. However, while it’s easy to point out when others are trying to get in our way, fewer of us recognize when we are getting in our own way. How often have you made a decision to accomplish something, and when you start getting close to reaching that goal, you unexpectedly find yourself sliding backwards? Selfsabotage can and does happen in all areas of our lives: personal, financial, health, and career. So, why do we sabotage ourselves? “Self-sabotage is when we say we want something and then go about making sure it doesn’t happen.” —Alyce P. Cornyn-Selby Think of a time when you said you really wanted something, yet you fell just short of getting it. If you look at the situation closely, what is the real reason you failed? I’ll bet that you either consciously or unconsciously got in your own way. It may have been the fear of the unknown. You may be unsure of what it would actually look like if you achieved this or that. The fear of leaving your comfort zone is a major reason people get in their own way. Along with the comfort zone issue comes negative selftalk. This is a big one. You know how that goes: “I’m not good enough.” “No one will hire me.” “I’m going to be stuck in this

relationship/job/etc.” I know I’ve been guilty of this, as has almost everyone around me at some point. “Having a low opinion of yourself is not ‘modesty.’ It’s self-destruction. Holding your uniqueness in high regard is not ‘egotism.’ It’s a necessary precondition to happiness and success.” —Bobbe Sommer So, how can you stop the cycle of self-sabotage? The first thing you can do is stop putting so much attention on what is wrong in your life and start focusing on what is good. The more you can focus on the positives, the more great things you will attract into your experience. Another important step is to stop all the comparisons. We all live our own lives, so rather than being jealous or constantly comparing yourself to others, turn the focus back on yourself and what you can control. Take a few minutes and write down some of your personal successes and talents. Remember: Our thoughts and actions attract more of the same, so it is important to be vigilant about paying attention to the chatter going on in your own head. “Believing in yourself is an endless destination. Believing you have failed is the end of the journey. “ —Unknown
