2020, Here We Come! Happy New Decade! 2020. Wow! Every January 1st is a big deal, but when we throw in the beginning of a new decade, it’s even more special. I love the anticipation of what’s ahead for all of us. I realize that this is simply a manmade way to organize time, but it makes me pause and reflect about the previous decade. What a decade it has been! My grand-daughter, Savannah, who turned five in January of 2010, will be turning 15 this month. Learner’s permit, here we come! Happy birthday, Savannah! Savannah has grown into a beautiful young woman. She is confident, accepting, beautiful, and smart. Savannah’s sister, McKenna, will be 9 years old in August of 2020. My grand-daughters are something else! McKenna is the most confident 8-year-old I’ve ever met. I love her spunk. She has become quite the soccer player and plays goalie frequently. . My daughter, Carissa, and her husband, Ken, are on a new adventure, as Ken got a new job that doesn’t require him to work nights and weekends. This hasn’t been true in the Rosa household for years. Now, he gets home at night, and they can spend time together as a family on the weekends! I am so pleased that they are finally able to do this. My life is terrific. My husband, Manny, and I are very happy. We celebrated our three-month anniversary on November 25th. A lot has happened in those three months. We faced a challenge with Manny’s father passing unexpectedly just a month after our wedding. The silver lining was that I was able to meet Manny’s entire family when we traveled back to Los Angeles for the service. Manny comes from a family of five kids. He is the oldest. Manny left for the Navy when he was just 18 years old, so he is working at reconnecting with his family. I am glad that I can go on that journey with him. I am planning that the decade of the twenties is going to be terrific for all of us. I am very optimistic about what we all have coming our way. There has been talk that the coming decade will be similar to the Roaring 1920s a century ago. Why did they call them the Roaring ’20s? It was due to the vibration of that time. It was an exuberant, fun, freewheeling time, filled with advances in freedom—particularly for women, science, and technology. I feel we will be having a repeat coming our way! Let’s bring in the New Decade right! Rejoice, smile, and make a complete stranger smile. Now, there is a terrific resolution!

Fulfill Your Bridal Fantasy Fresh Design Elements for Modern Brides By Holly Bell

Brides once spent a year or more looking for that perfect dress. With so many options available, it seemed like an impossible task to narrow it down to just one dress. Current bridal trends are changing, so you no longer have to labor over such a crucial decision. Now you can choose two or even three options to wear on your wedding day! According to The Knot’s annual wedding attire survey, 11 percent of 2018 brides wore more than one outfit on their wedding day, and the trend is expected to get even stronger. Every bridal special event deserves the perfect look! Consider a white belted blazer embellished with lace sleeves for the rehearsal dinner. The blazer is back in a big way in ready-to-wear; why not incorporate that fresh look into your wedding attire? The right blazer could be an important part of a more tailored, minimalist, or informal wedding look. For the reception, many brides choose to change into a more partyfriendly gown. After all, some of the most stunning bridal gowns aren’t exactly designed for dancing the night away! Consider a cocktail dress with a touch of elegance and a little sparkle. Keep it in the same color scheme as the wedding dress—even after the ceremony, the bride should look like the focus of the party and stand out from her guests. Speaking of color: The newest color story to grace the bridal runway is baby blue. Designers loved this new take on pastel options. You know the old saying about something blue! Of course, the cream and blush hues are always popular in bridal attire, but a wide range of color choices are on trend this year. Standouts are pistachio, soft gray, and lavender. I find the pink tones are exceptionally flattering, as they create a glowing “blushing bride” look. A few seasons ago, white with a touch of black was introduced, and this look has gained popularity every season. Weaving a black touch into the ensemble in the form of a belt, ribbons, or jacket brings a high-contrast and edgy look. A bridal gown in a subtle color or embellished with a contrasting color is a great way to stand out from the rest. Designers have spent the past few seasons falling in love with creative shoulders and sleeves in ready-to-wear. Bridal fashions have followed suit. Off-the-shoulder looks and capacious sleeves are creating some dramatic silhouettes reminiscent of dresses worn on the red carpet. With a dramatic statement neckline or sleeve, remember to keep everything else simple. One eye-catching detail is enough. Another traditional yet modern touch to wedding dresses 2020 is the creative use of sheer fabric. Wedding dresses are beautiful in motion and even more so with a sheer lower part of the gown. Usually starting around the knee, the sheer fabric gives a subtle peek-a-boo effect that is decidedly romantic. Sheer sleeves are also a wonderful option for winter brides or those who are modest about showing their arms. Sheer long sleeves are elegant and tasteful. Sheer bodice embellishments from the bust to the neckline are also a great way to be comfortable with a low-cut or even strapless dress. The high neck offers a touch of effortless elegance. The covered-up look is far from matronly; in fact, it is decidedly fashion-forward. Many gowns for 2020 feature sheer fabrics and ruffles around the neckline reminiscent of the Elizabethan era.

For the bride who wants to give a glimpse of a lovely leg, a thigh-high slit is offered on many gowns. On a form-fitting gown with simple lines, a properly placed slit can really turn heads! The key to maintaining an elegant look is to keep everything else simple and unadorned. If you’re the type who prefers to be heavily adorned, you’ll love the newest bridal embellishment this year: feathers! Joining lace, sequins, rhinestones, and pearls, feathers are a modern trend. Designers have added marabou feathers to hemlines, sleeves, and bodices for a soft, dreamy feel. The wedding veil is another important accessory to your gorgeous dress. A popular look in veils this year is the partial veil. It attaches to the back of the head and is embellished romantically with small artificial flowers. After all the hectic planning, don’t forget to enjoy the wedding day itself! Eat a good breakfast with protein to sustain you throughout your big day. Stay and be in the moment, savoring each minute. The day will go quickly, and you will want to remember it. Most importantly, don’t stress over details. Anything that doesn’t go as planned will make a wonderful and amusing moment to remember fondly for the rest of your life. A Venue on the Ridge Catering Events to Remember By Angella A. Arndt

Are you planning an event? Searching for a venue? If you’re planning a wedding ceremony or reception, corporate event, holiday party, or other special celebration, A Venue on the Ridge is ready to serve you. Bob and Amy Freshman purchased the Ridge Banquet Facility earlier this year and changed the name to A Venue on the Ridge. Since 2007, they had been the exclusive caterers for the Ridge Banquet Facility, located at the Elkhorn Ridge Golf Course. When the opportunity arose to purchase the facility, it was an easy decision. An enormous tree graces the front entrance. Bob and Amy have Irish roots, so they see the tree as the Celtic Tree of Life. A symbol of harmony, balance, and rebirth, the tree is the perfect greeting for guests arriving for weddings and other special celebrations. A paved, fenced-in area under the tree provides an option for those who want an outdoor setting. As the only dedicated event facility in Elkhorn, A Venue on the Ridge can accommodate events of up to 350 guests. In the spring of 2020, they will open a fully equipped tech conference room for business meetings with up to 30 guests. The facility’s interior has been updated, including built-in up-lighting. It also boasts a built-in dance floor and bar. A bridal suite is being installed for the bridal party. Outdoors, a well-lit parking lot provides accessible parking, and a porte-cochere is being built over the front entrance to provide shelter for guests getting in and out of vehicles. Out-of-town visitors can stay at one of the five hotels within two miles. A Venue on the Ridge is a full-serve banquet facility with an on-site kitchen and in-house catering. Rental of the facility includes bar service, tables, chairs, table linens, napkins, china, glassware, flatware, and standard centerpieces. A complimentary food tasting is provided when planning your event. Food is always cooked and served fresh to ensure optimum quality. Clients may select food options from the expansive menu, including brunch, lunch, and dinner items. Menus may also be developed to meet special dietary needs. If you’re interested in a specific food or tradition for your celebration, Bob and his staff will work to make it happen. “As a family-owned business, we have more flexibility than corporate venues and can accommodate many special requests,” Bob points out. Bob has been catering for over 30 years and enjoys sharing his passion with others. He also owns Phoenix Food and Spirits at 120th and Blondo Streets and Phoenix Food and Spirits 370 on 132nd Street and Highway 370. “I love food service,” he shares.

“I love making people happy and the instant Owners Amy and Bob gratification you get when people enjoy what you’ve Freshman, and sales made.” Bob takes pride in providing a great meal and a and marketing director great experience. Molly Dunning People in the Omaha and Elkhorn areas have a lot of venues to choose from. However, as a business owned and operated by an Elkhorn family, A Venue on the Ridge strives to stand out from the crowd. Their employees have industry experience, longevity, and a good work ethic. “We are a hidden gem in Elkhorn,” says Molly Dunning, the director of sales and marketing. “We provide quality food and service at a reasonable price. We want to make our clients’ dreams a reality.” Cami Brannen, a recent guest, had a great experience. “Thank you so much for everything you did for us! Food was amazing! We sincerely appreciate the work you put into our special night!” Bob and Molly share insight about items to consider when choosing a venue. Is the facility large enough to handle your event? Is the staff easy to work with? What does rental include? Is food prepared onsite or off-site? Is food served fresh? Can the catering handle special dietary needs? Are there hotels nearby for out-of-town guests? Is there ample parking? Asking these questions will eliminate unwanted surprises. If you’re hosting an event at your home or another venue, A Venue on the Ridge offers off-site catering services. They’re proud of their fresh, quality food, but they put just as much effort into their service. Bob strives to provide an enjoyable, stress-free experience when catering out of someone’s home. “When we walk out of your place, it will look as good as it did when we walked in,” he asserts. Bob’s philosophy is simple. “It’s all about delivering what we promise.” Whether you have an on-site event or use their off-site catering, their fantastic food, attention to detail, and exceptional service ensure that you’ll have an event to remember with A Venue on the Ridge. A Venue on the Ridge is located at 20033 Elkhorn Ridge Drive, in Elkhorn. For more information, please call 402-213-8303 or find them online at avenueontheridge.com. WE

A Woman’s Work

New Year, Same Old You? Change Your Approach By Sharon Knierim

At the beginning of every year, most of us spend a lot of effort trying to come up with a New Year’s resolution that we can seriously carry out. High on lots of lists are resolutions like losing weight or not eating any unhealthy food. Of course, resolutions like these often don’t last very long. Oh, sure, it seems exciting and challenging in the early stages…as time goes on, though, many of us move away from the promises we made to ourselves and then are engulfed in guilt. We find lots of reasons and excuses as to why we can’t have a light supper or eat more fruits and vegetables instead of carbohydrates and fat. We find ourselves picking up meals at fast food drive-ins. That gym membership we got so we could do daily workouts? Well, we all know what becomes of that after a few well-intentioned visits. When we make resolutions like “no junk food” or “lose weight,” we’re putting ourselves in tough situations and setting ourselves up for failure. Instead of denial of foods that we love or trying to stretch our physical beings surrounded by strangers in public spaces, it might be more realistic to make some form of a positive resolution that will bring us more personal success. Instead of making resolutions that you are not liable to honor, develop a plan or self-commitment to improve your way of thinking. Are you a creature of negative thought

patterns? It’s easy to become negative and apathetic. It seems that there is very little good news these days, and positive news reports are few and far between. One sure-fire method to improve a negative mood is to become less emotionally involved in news that we can’t change. Now, don’t forego the news of the world altogether. We still need to be aware of events that surround us and that make an impact on our lives, but we can try to keep things in perspective. Perhaps finding a different news source or delivery would be helpful. Instead of taking on all the cares of the world, give yourself a break and find a variety of entertainments. I’ll bet your mood will improve. Get involved in activities that are enlightening and promote positive thinking. Spend more time with people who seem to be invested (naturally or deliberately) in positive and

constructive thoughts and activities. Perform a personal inventory of your characteristics. When I did one of these self-inventories and was brutally honest with myself, I uncovered some slightly less-than-admirable qualities and habits. I recognized that it was time to do some reshuffling of priorities. Maybe we should all do this from time to time. I can vow that I feel better already. It sure beats having someone else point out some of my less desirable qualities! Will I be able to keep up the good habits? So far, so good! Hopefully, feeling better about myself and those around me will be a reward worth gaining. When we feel better about ourselves, we naturally feel better about our surroundings and those who populate them. Taking care of ourselves is a key step to taking a positive attitude and moving in the right direction. Focusing on the needs of others is an excellent road to feeling better about ourselves. It certainly is true that no matter how bad or hopeless things feel, there is always someone else whose needs are greater than our own. Some will argue that it is important not to become too self-involved, and there is real truth in that. Of course, it’s natural to focus on ourselves—our own problems are the closest to us. However, if we focus too exclusively on ourselves, we seem to turn inward, and we don’t develop or expand the natural curiosity that makes humans who we are. Spread yourself around. Let others know what a unique person you are. At the same time, allow yourself to explore other people’s interests and find out what makes them tick. It can be a real education learning about people you already know. Lots of us have interesting qualities that others are not aware of, and that is a real shame. Many people are much more interesting than you might imagine! You can discover that by cultivating your curiosity about others. Amazingly, these plans for a new you sound a lot like New Year’s resolutions, don’t they? It is entirely up to you how you approach making new habits, dropping old habits, or launching into the kind of breakthrough that will probably make you a happier and more satisfied person. Whatever your plan is, please let me take this opportunity to wish you and yours a wonderful New Year. WE

Vantage Point

Suburban Bridal Celebrating 50 Years

By Roxy Orr

Celebrating 50 years, Suburban Bridal has been bringing the best to area brides, featuring exclusive designs produced with the highest quality fabric, including hand-loomed laces and handbeaded gowns. Nearly 85 percent of the dresses at this design boutique are designed by owner Mary Lou Scherer herself. Her talent, experience, and reliability are among the unique qualities that set Suburban Bridal apart. This boutique has the necessary accessories to complete any bride’s desire for her vision of what she wants on her wedding day. Mary Lou has been designing dresses since she was three years old by drawing gowns on stick figures. She began her modeling career at age 14, traveling to California, Texas, and New York for assignments (chaperoned, of course). She met multiple celebrities during that part of her career, but she is truly a lady— if you ask her to elaborate, she politely declines to discuss details. A random encounter with a bridal promoter as a young woman led Mary Lou to a career as a freelance bridal designer, helping her to obtain advanced degrees in education. One collection in the shop has a special significance for Mary Lou. She developed the Lisa Lou Collection to honor her daughter, Lisa, who passed away in 2014. As store manager for more than 25 years, Lisa had focused on helping brides find the perfect gown at the lowest price, still using handmade lace and beading. After losing her daughter and very dear friend, Mary Lou concentrated on establishing a line of wedding gowns that would be the finest quality of haute couture construction, sold at the very best price. In Lisa’s honor, Mary Lou developed the Lisa Lou Collection, which is available only at Suburban Bridal. Mary Lou also designs the Private Collection, which does go to other stores in about a five-state radius. These gowns are all over the world. There are distribution centers for these gowns but no advertising. A large percentage (approximately 50 percent) of any wedding gown’s cost is advertising. By eliminating advertising, these gowns can be sold at half the cost. With the Lisa Lou collection, which is sold only at Suburban Bridal, the cost of a distribution center (about 25 percent of the dress cost) can also be eliminated. Mary Lou is therefore able to price this line at approximately 25 percent of the original cost. From her many years in business, advertising by word of mouth has helped grow the line and the store. Suburban Bridal has three factories overseas that make gowns for their boutique. Each one features different kinds of lace. Recently, Mary Lou went overseas to teach the crews at the factories how to cut and construct one gown

at a time rather than several at once (as was customary, in the past, to save time). She was able to show them that, with better procedures, they could achieve this concept in the same amount of time. The fit is far better and much closer to the Owner Mary Lou Scherer measurement charts; this leads to happier brides whose alteration costs are reduced. Choosing a wedding gown is a personal experience to be handled with care. Mary Lou stresses the importance of getting to know each bride. “If you really care about the bride, she can sense it,” Mary Lou declares. She and her crew work closely with each bride, helping her select the right gown to highlight her assets and flatter her body type. She advises brides to keep an open mind and shares that many of her customers end up with gowns they never thought they would like! Mary Lou’s business and life philosophies are parallel. “It is important to treat others like you want to be treated,” she asserts. She encourages each bride to think about the groom when she is deciding on a gown and to keep in mind that a wedding is truly a life-changing event. “Remember the look on his face when he sees you for the first time in this fabulous gown,” she advises. “Later, when he really irritates you, think about that incredible look and just plain get over it!” A piece of advice that she got from her husband, many years ago, is good advice for any married couple: “It is better to be wrong and get along than be right and fight!” Mary Lou has no plans to retire from designing, and Suburban Bridal will continue far into the future. Suburban Bridal is located at 2607 South 156th Circle, right behind the LaRue’s parking lot. Look for the blue flowerpots out front. When you see that “something blue,” you’ll know that you’ve found the boutique where you’re going to find the wedding gown of your dreams. Fresh Concept

Get Fit in 2020! Fitness Choices for the New Year By Janette Calabro

We’re not all athletes, but we can all commit to getting fit. Let’s get in shape because we want to, not because we have to. Start fresh in 2020 with a new attitude about fitness and a real plan to achieve it. Exercise does more than make you sweat! Being physically fit brings benefits for physical health and mental health—not to mention the benefit of how you look in those new jeans. There are numerous ways to get fit; you should choose your workouts based on your abilities, likes, and dislikes. For example, axe-throwing is a thing, and not just for lumberjacks, but if that doesn’t thrill you, there are other ways to build up your shoulders and core muscles. In the same line of thinking, you don’t have to be a trained dancer to enjoy the bouncy fun of a dancebased workout or a barre class. Before you dive into any fitness routine, it’s good to be informed about the differences between low-impact and high-impact exercise. Both are beneficial, and you can modify most exercises to suit your level or needs, but some physical limitations make high-impact exercise a riskier proposition. For example, if you have arthritis in your knees, jumping squats and running aren’t your best options. Even if your limitation is only temporary—you’re recovering from an injury, are pregnant, or have sore joints—it’s best to ease into low-impact exercise for safety and effectiveness. Low-impact exercise is gentler on the joints and requires at least one foot on the ground. It’s also great for people who are new to exercise or who simply don’t like higher-impact workouts. Bodyweight training, like push-ups or planks, is a low-impact regimen that uses the weight from your own body for resistance. As you condition your body, you can eventually up the ante by increasing repetitions and challenging yourself with more difficult routines. Consider hiring a personal trainer for a plan to keep you accountable. They can also cue proper body form so you get the most out of each exercise and avoid injury. Low-impact exercise doesn’t mean you have to skip cardio. Get to the gym and hop on the elliptical. Pedaling above the ground instead of stepping against a hard surface is easier on your joints. Join a spin class for great cardio benefits while sitting instead of standing. If you’d rather be outdoors, you can take a hike or a bike ride on scenic trail. If water is more your speed, jump into the swimming pool and swim laps or tread water. You’ll get cardio benefits if you swim for at least 10 minutes. You’ll exit refreshed and ready to tackle the day. Don’t forget about water aerobics. All that low-impact resistance will burn calories and define muscles without high-impact jolts to your sensitive joints, and you’ll probably have lots of fun! Honorable mentions for low-impact exercise with

January 2020

tons of mind-body benefits include Pilates and yoga. A Pilates class will strengthen and lengthen, often using special equipment, to get that lean ballet body. Joseph Pilates, the inventor of Pilates, stressed using the breath and coordinating the mind, body, and spirit in order to achieve fitness. Although this technique targets the deep muscles in your core, the whole body is worked to improve strength, alignment, and flexibility. Joseph Pilates said, “In 10 sessions, you’ll feel the difference. In 20 sessions, you’ll see the difference. In 30 sessions, you’ll have a new body.” Learning how to properly move your body takes effort and practice, but it’s worth it. All exercise becomes more effective when you learn how to move. Yoga is often described as a relaxing, meditative practice, using the breath and flowing smoothly through physical poses, but that’s not all it is. Yoga is an old discipline from India, and its purposes are many, including improvement of health and happiness. If you want to relax your mind, ease lower back pain, and find inner peace, yoga might be right up your alley. If you’re new to the HIIT craze, don’t let the explosive movements scare you. HIIT (high-intensity interval training) alternates between high-intensity and low-intensity motion, and it remains a top trend for exercise choices. HIIT promises a greater calorie burn in the least amount of time, combining short bursts of intense activity with rest in between. There’s a strict definition for heart rate, too. You should reach at least 80 percent of maximum capacity during a window of one to five minutes before switching to periods of rest or lowerintensity exercise. The purpose is to increase aerobic capacity, stamina, and the ability to build muscle. What does a typical HIIT routine look like? That depends on what type of exercise you do. A high-impact runner’s version might alternate sprints with jogging. A fitness studio might alternate 45 seconds of squats into

www.womensedition.com

15 seconds of crunches for a low-impact routine. HIIT workouts range from 10 minutes to a full hour. Shoot for at least 20 minutes to melt away fat. High-impact routines move both feet off the ground at the same time. If your workout includes jumping jacks, running laps, or jumping from plyo boxes at the gym, you’re in high-impact mode. Contact with the floor or equipment is hard and frequent. If you want a challenge, want to lose weight faster, and you’re at a low risk for injury, go for it! High-impact movement includes things like CrossFit, kickboxing, or a long run—if your joints don’t mind. Do you ever feel like punching something? If so, consider kickboxing. This high-intensity martial arts workout burns about 750 calories per hour, combining cardio and strength training to tone muscles and melt away fat. There’s plenty of punching and kicking. Body transformation is fast, fun, and continually pushes you toward a higher fitness level. Expect to throw punches wearing boxing gloves and kick away the day’s challenges. It’s great exercise and a great stress reliever. CrossFit was created by a gymnast in the mid-1990s and is aimed at strengthening the body with exercises of power, speed, coordination, stamina, and balance. Like HIIT, exercises are mixed to exert the maximum force in the shortest amount of time, but CrossFit squeezes in gymnastics and even Olympic weight lifting to mix things up a little more. All those kettlebells and battle ropes need proper body form to be safe and effective. This is one routine that really needs the trained eye of a coach or personal trainer to make sure you’re moving your body properly and using the equipment safely. Personal trainers can do a great deal to kick your fitness into high gear (or low gear, or whatever gear you need). They help you

to set goals with a fitness plan based on your individual needs. They’re great motivators, keeping you accountable even when you find an excuse to skip your workout. They keep you educated about how your body moves and train you to keep proper form in each exercise. The value added is priceless! Another way to keep yourself accountable is to join a gym. Most offer group fitness classes, from indoor cycling to yoga and Pilates. There is often a swimming pool for those sore joints. You can enlist a personal trainer, too, often with a complimentary session so you can decide if that’s a good fit. Take a foam-rolling class to work out sore muscles at the end of the week or walk the track inside on a snowy day. Be sure to look for gyms that prioritize cleanliness and offer equipment and classes that interest you. In addition to large gyms or fitness centers that offer a wide variety of workouts, there are also workout-specific facilities where they focus on a single program like CrossFit or kickboxing. If you’re dedicated to a specific program, this might be a great convenience for you—a dedicated facility can offer a full schedule of the same class, making it easier to fit in your workout. Whether refining your downward dog in a grounding yoga class, training for a marathon at the track, elongating your body with Pilates, or sprinting and resting during HIIT, you can get the benefits of exercise while doing an activity you enjoy. Combine a few for multiple benefits. Join a hula-fit class (yes, with hula hoops) one day, and dance your troubles away in a Zumba or Refit class the next. Find your strengths and weaknesses, train harder and smarter, and change out the old you for a new you. Cheers! Sources for this article included: vox.com, glofox.com, yogasite. com, and livefit.com. Camelot Cleaners Where Clothes Get the Royal Treatment of Service

By Vicki Jo Walsh

If you want a dry cleaner who will treat you and your clothes like royalty, you need to check out Camelot Cleaners. This family-owned Omaha business was started 20 years ago by Vince Courtney. He had worked in the industry for several years and saw the opportunity and need for a dry cleaning facility in the expanding Westgate area of Omaha. In February of 1984, he made the move to go into business for himself. The first Camelot Cleaners was located in the Westlake Hardware building on the corner of 84th and Center Streets in Omaha. Vince later saw an opportunity to build from the ground up: the first Nebraska drive-up dry cleaning facility, at 86th and Frederick Street. For many, this drive-up service is invaluable! It’s very popular with people who have small children in the car, for people with physical limitations who have difficulty getting out of the car, and for just about anyone running errands on one of those not-so-rare wintry Nebraska days. As the Camelot Cleaners business grew, so did the

number of area locations. There are currently five locations in Omaha. In Owner Craig Courtney addition to the Frederick Street location, you can find a Camelot Cleaners at 120th and Pacific, 114th and Jackson, 177th and West Center Road, and 132nd and West Dodge Road (another drive-up location). Following Vince’s retirement, his son, Craig, and other family members continue to operate the business. They grew up in this business, often working after school or during the summer months. Besides shirts and suits and regular clothes cleaning services, Camelot Cleaners also offers care for your fine

linens, rugs, and other textiles. There are a few items, such as leathers, that are sent out to specialty cleaners. If your item needs to be sent to a special textile cleaner, the staff at Camelot Cleaners will walk you through the process, timeline, and cost for the service; that way, you’ll have all the information before you decide to leave your specialty item. Camelot Cleaners also employs a seamstress who offers in-house repairs on things like a loose hem or zipper. The seamstress can also do alterations, measuring and fitting an item just for you. The preservation service at Camelot Cleaners is meticulous. This service is offered primarily for wedding gowns but can also be used to preserve christening gowns or other special clothing items. Prior to the start of the preservation process, each item is inspected by Camelot Cleaners staff for any repairs needed, including such fine work as securing a loose bead or pre-treating a stain. The treatment process at Camelot Cleaners is done by hand to guarantee the best results. Before the final preservation step, the customer is offered the opportunity to inspect the item. The final step is to preserve the item in acid-free tissues and box it for storage. This use of acid-free paper is the same process as used for museum storage. Camelot Cleaners offers a lot of great services and convenient locations, but what makes this business really special? Craig quickly answers that the real specialty is the staff. Camelot Cleaners employs over 40 people, and the Courtney family really values

these employees. Many of them have been there for years, greeting customers out front or cleaning garments in the workroom. When you enter the store, you might be greeted by name and then asked how your vacation went—customers and employees are often on a first-name basis. Because they know their customers personally, the staff members feel a responsibility to care for their customers and take great pride in their work and final product. The management of the company is composed primarily of family members, and the Camelot Cleaners staff have become extensions of the Courtney family. This sense of duty and pride in performance makes for happy customers who are grateful for the royal treatment they receive. With that level of customer service, it’s easy to see why Camelot Cleaners continues to grow. Their loyal customers are the backbone of their success. A recent example of customer loyalty and continuing satisfaction are the two women who came to Camelot Cleaners to have a wedding gown preserved by Camelot Cleaners—for the second time. The mother had had her gown preserved by Camelot Cleaners, and they took it out of storage for her daughter to wear. Now, they wanted the gown preserved again so it would look just as good for the next daughter’s wedding—the third anticipated wearing of the gown. Now, that’s customer loyalty! Visitors are welcome to walk the new hiking trail west of the Preserve mailbox (foot traffic only, please). The trailhead includes a small parking area and information kiosk. You have your choice of the long loop or the short loop, both with grand views of the Niobrara River. You may enjoy the Norden chute at the Norden Bridge, as well. Fishing is allowed with a Nebraska fishing permit. Please, no diving, camping, or campfires. The Nebraska Natural Heritage Program identified the Niobrara Valley Preserve as the biological crossroads of the Great Plains. To date, 581 plant, 213 bird, 86 lichen, 70 butterfly, 44 mammal, 25 fish, 17 reptile, and 8 amphibian species have been recorded at the Preserve. Explore the mosaic of prairies, forests, canyons, springs, and riverfront that you’ve helped protect. Plan your visit: email the Preserve at amanda.hefner@tnc.org or call 402-722-4440.

Pedodontics, PC Caring for Children’s Smiles By Marge Shoemaker

Do you remember your first visit to a dentist or orthodontist? Chances are, you were led into a small room and placed in a reclining chair under a light so bright you could hardly see who was behind it. Next to the chair was a tray holding strangelooking instruments. That was pretty traumatic! You might be hesitant to subject your children to the same treatment. That’s understandable but not necessary—the field of pediatric dentistry and orthodontics has come a long way. Although dentistry in general is going corporate, Pedodontics, PC, has been providing caring dental care for children and young adults since 1964 and has been family owned for over 50 years. The current staff is composed of Lisa Strunk, DDS, MS (in pediatric dentistry), MS (in orthodontics); Carmen Dana, DDS, MS (in pediatric medicine); and Amanda Snyder, DDS. All three are mothers and are very involved in the community. As you enter the facility, you are met with an open reception area decorated in bright colors. Large windows provide lots of natural light. A cottage-style playhouse invites the kids to play while they wait for their

appointments. Funhousestyle mirrors and a word wall with lots of happy sayings about smiles and teeth provide a kid-friendly atmosphere. In the open-bay clinic area, internal walls of nine-foot knotty alder doors and seeded glass provide privacy for consultations. Kids perch on brightly colored benches or tables; parents wait on benches near their child’s clinical area. Assistants explain procedures to children as they proceed through various stages of dental treatment. Looking around, you can see that every aspect of dental care is being provided: cleanings, fillings, fluoride treatments, space maintenance, and orthodontics with traditional braces and Invisalign.

Dr. Carmen Dana, Dr. Lisa Strunk, and Dr. Amanda Snyder

www.womensedition.com

The openness of the clinic area is designed to allay feelings of separation for both parents and patients. The kids feel safe. Seeing other kids being treated helps everyone relax and receive dental care in a happy, non-threatening atmosphere. All three doctors also want to help the parents feel calm—if a parent feels apprehensive, the child will also be worried. The goal is to make everyone comfortable. The doctors encourage parents to bring their children for a first dental visit by their first birthday. The primary aim of the first visit is to educate parents on healthy habits and begin building healthy oral habits. The doctors suggest that parents plan on appointments every six months for a routine exam, cleaning, and fluoride treatment. When children are six, or when their first permanent molars have erupted, parents should consider having minimally invasive and preventive sealants placed. The sealants create a smooth, self-cleansing surface so that bacteria are not easily trapped on newly erupted teeth. “In the beginning, children should have just a ‘smear’ of toothpaste on the toothbrush,” recommends Dr. Lisa. “They should brush their teeth in the morning (after breakfast) and at bedtime. In addition, they should drink water throughout the day to clear their mouths of bacteria.” As with any new skill, children need assistance and supervision when learning how to brush their teeth. Children younger than about age seven generally lack the dexterity to do a thorough job, even with good intentions. The doctors suggest that parents help their children get in the habit of brushing and flossing every night. As pediatric patients grow, it is natural for orthodontic needs to arise. Old knowledge suggested that treatment be delayed until

the permanent teeth had come in. As it turns out, however, many problems that might be easily treated at a young age are not fully correctable in the teenage years. Dr. Lisa provides a metaphor: “Just as a young tree can be encouraged to grow in certain directions, a young person’s facial bones and jaw may also be encouraged to grow in more desirable directions. Today, we know that younger school-aged children benefit in many ways from early treatment.” Indicators of orthodontic problems include overlapped and crowded teeth, upper front tooth protrusion, and misaligned bites. Early interceptive treatment creates room for potential crowded teeth, allows more symmetrical jaw growth, and reduces the risk of trauma and fractures. Dr. Lisa, as an orthodontist and pediatric dentist, explains that orthodontic treatment may be given in two phases if it benefits the child’s development. Dr. Lisa mentions that instead of doing impressions, they have a 3D scanner to digitalize your child’s mouth. Phase one treatment improves the environment for teeth to erupt; phase two is the application of braces or Invisalign. Dr. Lisa also mentions, “We have an inhouse orthodontic lab, so we can get next day retainers and space maintainers.” “Children today are more apt to receive preventive dental care and interceptive orthodontic care than their parents were,” Dr. Lisa points out. “As such, they have healthy teeth, beautiful smiles, and an even better chance to have a healthy, successful life! All of us on the Pedodontics team welcome the chance to keep your child’s smile bright.” Pedodontics, PC, is located at 2521 South 119th Street, in Omaha. Call 402-330-5913 to make an appointment. Good Looks

Out With the Old, In With the New Plastic Surgery Options

By Loretta McCollum

We’ve all heard the expression “New year, new you.” This year, take that phrase at its word. Let’s explore the multiple cosmetic surgery options that can diminish the signs of aging, boost your confidence, and give you a new look in 2020. Whether you want to wind back the clock or bring some balance and proportion to your features, it’s important to do your research to find a qualified professional with solid credentials and experience in the procedures you select. Any licensed physician can perform cosmetic surgery, but it’s important to check out a physician’s training, experience, and track record. You should seek out a surgeon who is certified by a medical board in the area that pertains to the surgery you desire (for example, the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery for a facial procedure). Board certification means that a surgeon has completed extra training and has been positively evaluated by other professionals. Board certification is important, but it’s not more important than experience. Be sure that the surgeon you choose is wellpracticed in the specific procedure that you’re having done. Ask to examine before-and-after photos, including photos that are taken years after the procedure, to see how the results are aging on other patients. Women often seek out anti-aging cosmetic surgery beginning

around age 40. Aging skin loses elasticity and volume, which is when crow’s feet, furrowed brows, and jowls start to appear. One of the most popular procedures is the full face lift, which addresses the entire face and neck. This procedure lifts and firms sagging tissue, smooths deep creases and folds, and tightens facial tissue. The surgeon makes small incisions behind the hairline, repositions deep tissue beneath the skin, and removes excess skin, restoring shape. General anesthesia is used. The recovery period is about two weeks. Eyes may be the window to the soul, but bags and droopy lids can cloud that window. An upper eyelid lift removes fat and extra skin that has lost its shape. A lower lid lift removes and repositions fatty tissue and also tightens muscles, smoothing wrinkles and decreasing under-eye bags and puffiness. Incisions are made in natural eye creases, making them virtually invisible. As with a face ›››

lift, you can expect about two weeks for recovery. You may return to normal activities sooner, but it will take about two weeks for bruising and swelling to resolve. Do your brow line and forehead wrinkles make you appear to be in a constant scowl? Similar to an eyelid lift, a brow or forehead lift also removes excess skin and repositions muscle tissue. Tiny incisions along the hairline are virtually invisible, correcting those deep furrows and creases. Two weeks is the usual recovery time. Aging and weight gain alter the angles of the lower face and neck, bringing multiple chins or loose, flapping skin. If this description sounds familiar, consider neck contouring surgery. This procedure removes extra fatty skin and tightens muscles, smoothing wrinkles, creating a defined jawline, and reducing the appearance of neck bands. Recovery time is similar to that of a full face lift. If your nose sticks out like a sore thumb, you may want to consider rhinoplasty. It can enhance appearance and also help correct birth defects or breathing problems. This procedure can reshape, straighten, or shorten the nose, improving facial symmetry by altering bone, cartilage, skin, or all of the above. Plan for a sevenday recovery period, followed by possible swelling for a few months. Otoplasty reshapes the outer ear in an effort to either improve appearance or correct a deformity. Incisions are usually made on the back of the ear while the patient is under local or general anesthesia. Expect the ears to be bandaged for five to seven days. An important question when considering cosmetic surgery is whether or not insurance will cover the cost. Typically, these types of surgeries are considered elective and are therefore not covered by most insurance plans, unless the procedure is deemed to improve the health of the patient. (Examples might include the correction of crooked nasal passages that impede breathing or severe eyelid droop that impairs vision.) Check with your physician and insurance company prior to undergoing any of the procedures described above. Whether your insurance will cover it or not, improvements to self-confidence and self-esteem can be deciding factors in the decision to undergo facial cosmetic surgery. You need to determine for yourself whether 2020 will be the year for a new you. More Than Sharing Fritos Making Time for Friends

By Janet Van deWalle

Do you remember having a best friend in grade school? I remember the best friend I had when I was in first grade. She was my next door neighbor and was most likely a year or so younger than I was. We would skip down the hill, holding each other’s hands. I would share my small bag of Fritos with her, even though Fritos were absolutely my favorite afternoon snack. We would sit on our shared driveway, looking at the sky, telling each other our “secrets.” She was not in my life for a very long time, but I remember her to this day.

face, but it’s part of growing up. It’s part of becoming an adult. “Adulthood is like the vet, and we’re all the dogs that were excited for the car ride until we realized where we’re going.”—Anonymous As an adult, I look for a little more from my friends than simply sharing our favorite snacks. I want them to be honest with me. I want them to teach me to be better. I want them to challenge me when I am not doing my best. I want to trust that they will tell me the truth.

“There’s something about childhood friends that you just can’t replace.”—Lisa Whelchel

“A friend can tell you things you don’t want to tell yourself.”—Frances Ward Weller

Before I knew what happened, I grew up. Life happened, and I made many new friends. I have work friends, family friends, couples friends, long-distance friends—so many friends!

I admit, this was a very hard lesson for me to learn. Life moves so very fast, and building and maintaining relationships with true friends requires a commitment of time—the one commodity that we cannot buy more of. I have learned that it is worth it to invest in friendship, even when what they tell us hurts our pride!

“A true friend is someone who thinks that you are a good egg even though he knows that you are slightly cracked.” —Bernard Meltzer

“Our chief want in life is somebody who will make us do what we can.”—Ralph Waldo Emerson

Over the years, I have had friends come and go. I have had to face the fact that many people who I thought were my friends really didn’t have my best interests at heart. That’s a hard thing to

I hope that you are all blessed to have at least a couple of true friends in your life. They are here for a reason. WE

Smile. Hug. Apologize. Defuse an Escalating Situation It doesn’t seem possible that 2019 will be gone in just a few weeks. If the old adage of “time flies when you’re having fun” is true, then I must be having an absolute ball! In general, 2019 was a good year—except for a few minor rough spots. I’ve been thinking about how some of those hiccups could have been avoided or smoothed over. I think the best way of smoothing conflicts, wherever they occur, is open and honest communication. We won’t always agree with everyone on everything. Disagreements or differences of opinion can be overcome, and they don’t have to lead to ill will. We all have bad days. I generally try not to let my bad mood spill over into any relationships. No one else should have to suffer because I’m unhappy. Once in a while, we all slip and say something snarky that we immediately regret. I did, and it escalated into a shouting match. We parted NOT on the best of terms. I later apologized to everyone else who was witness to my temper and also to the friend I snipped at. Don’t ever be afraid to say you’re sorry. If you’re on the receiving end of someone’s tantrum, try to understand that it’s usually a temporary mood that may not have had much to do with you at all. Forgive these people. Chances are, they aren’t happy about what happened, either. We all have arguments within the family. I remember a time

By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS

when I had been really worried when the kids were late. Boy, did they get it when they finally got home! Then I apologized for yelling and explained how worried I’d been. I still worry about my kids…and they’re all adults. We occasionally have disagreements over something minor but can usually talk through them. I always end a phone call, visit, or time together by saying, “Love you!” Those who write advice columns tell people to talk it out. Get counseling. Find out the real reason for the argument or disagreement. “Don’t go to bed mad” is often good advice. Sometimes it helps to let people get things off their chest. Sometimes I argue with myself. I try to do it in the privacy of my own home or in the car…I don’t need witnesses to me berating myself. I guess I’m trying to say that you shouldn’t let bad terms or misunderstandings be the end of an argument. There’s always a reason for an argument, but there isn’t always a right side and a wrong side. People are individuals. We shouldn’t always think the same. How boring would that be? A hug, a smile, an apology— these are great ways to smooth things over and defuse what could be a volatile situation. Even with kids. Remember, they’re people, too. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Get in Shape in Private Latest Trends in Home Gyms

By Robyn V. Powell

Many Americans kick off the New Year with a resolution to live a healthier lifestyle and to get fit. Gym memberships soar every January and then, despite the best of intentions, fall off as people tire of the gym grind. Recent research suggests that as many as 80 percent of people who sign up for a gym membership drop out within just eight weeks. Perhaps you’ve experienced this yourself or are just not getting to the gym as often as you had hoped. If so, it may be time to rethink a gym membership and consider a home gym. The idea of building a home gym and purchasing fitness equipment can seem daunting. Taking a closer look at the cost benefits may just convince you to take the plunge! Setting up a home gym definitely involves some upfront costs, so it’s best to look at your home gym as a long-term investment. Treadmills, stationary bikes, and weights can be expensive, but the fact that you’re not paying for a gym membership will save you money over time. A smart approach is to invest in high-quality equipment that is tailored to your preferences. For instance, if you love cycling, you can buy a stationary bike equipped with extra programs and set it up just the way you like it. No more

wasting time making minor adjustments like seat height. Instead, you get straight into your workout. Since you (and perhaps a few lucky friends or family members) will be the only ones using the equipment, it will endure far less wear and tear than at a public gym. With proper maintenance, high-quality home gym equipment will last for decades. Though financial savings can be significant, the real value of a home gym is saved time. Driving to and from the gym, not to mention having to stand around waiting for someone to finish using the machine, is time wasted. When you have to find that extra time to travel to and from the gym, it encourages you to skip your workout. Excuses begin to creep in—you’re too tired, or the weather outside is terrible. Having all the equipment you need for a great workout right under your own roof is a powerful motivator to keep you on track to meet your fitness goals. All-hours access ›››

and no waiting equates to a more efficient use of your time. Choose to work out before you leave for the office or as soon as you get home, with the convenience of your own shower just steps away. The biggest trend in home gyms is home-assisted training. People are investing in treadmills and stationary bikes that are equipped with a monitor screen and software that offers access to various instructor-led workout routines. It’s like having a personal trainer right in your own home. These internet-enabled systems allow for competition with people around the world, making your workout interactive and fun by bringing the spin class to you. A home gym can be built just about anywhere in your home, like in a spare bedroom, the basement, or even a garage. Your ultimate home gym setup will depend on the space you have and how much equipment you want. When it comes to flooring considerations, rubber and vinyl are the most durable options. Rubber is a natural shock absorber. Rubber mats are great for yoga exercises and as a base mat under treadmills and other equipment. Carpet is not recommended, as it likely can’t handle the abuse and will definitely absorb odors. If space is limited and you want to step up your home gym, a bar mounted on the wall or ceiling will give your space an authentic gym feel. Pull-up bars offer versatility and allow you to target specific muscles. These space-saving setups can be equipped with extra accessories like gymnastic rings, yoga straps, and punching bags. Adding a mirrored wall may seem extravagant, but gym mirrors are not just for vanity. A mirror is a vital tool to let you see if you are exercising properly. Assessing your form while going through the motions ensures you are doing things correctly and reduces the chance of injuring yourself due to poor form. Last but not least, paint your home gym an inspiring color. Even if the rest of your home has a modern, neutral palette, the gym is one room to make an exception. Bold colors infuse instant energy, get you pumped, and keep you exercising longer. Bright orange, blue, or red walls will have you off and running! Once you’ve enjoyed the convenience of your own home gym, you’ll wonder how you ever got yourself to go to the gym. Main Street Studios & Gallery Grassroots Art in Downtown Elkhorn

By Robyn V. Powell

As a young student, Tyler Curnes was on track to join his family’s financial business when a backpacking trip through Europe changed the course of his life. While traveling through Venice, Tyler happened upon an artist performing the mesmerizing art of glass blowing. The sight of liquid glass transforming into beautiful vessels right before his eyes fascinated him. He spent the afternoon with the artist and tried his own hand at the ancient art. “When I got home, I bought a kiln, and the hobby just kept getting bigger and bigger,” says Tyler. “While I was doing finance in my family’s business, I was getting 30 hours in custom orders a week.” He decided to pursue his passion full-time and never looked back. As his business grew, Tyler needed a studio to produce and showcase his artwork. In 2014, he noticed a “for sale” sign on an abandoned building in downtown Elkhorn that held personal meaning for him. “My grandfather had regularly traveled the Lincoln Highway during his working years. Back then, the building housed a gas station, and it was a favorite pit stop for my grandfather.” Originally built as a livery stable in 1915, the building had fallen into disrepair. Preserving the original exposed beams and brick was painstaking, but the historic elements give the space its raw, earthy quality. Upon entering Main Street Studios & Gallery, you get the sense that the walls have a story to tell—they speak of past lives and a bygone era. “I wanted the gallery to be an intimate environment,” Tyler says, “a place to cultivate local artists and provide a work space where they could promote their art to the community and the wider public.” The gallery houses five full-time artists—a fine arts acrylic painter, an oil painter, a silversmith, a bronze artist, and Tyler, who produces glasswork. The interactive environment allows visitors to browse artwork for sale, see artists at work, and even ask them questions about their art. “Each artist has a studio, and we all take turns staffing the gallery,” explains Tyler. “For the artists, it’s not so much a job. It’s more like being part of a family or community where we support and foster one another’s individual creativity.” Art, like entrepreneurship, is about pursuing a vision, creating something as yet unseen. As Committee President for downtown Elkhorn, Tyler is dedicated to revitalizing and developing the area. Vintage-style streetlights are currently being installed, and brick sidewalks will follow. “We wanted to keep the downtown area historical. Old buildings teach

40

us our history and help keep our heritage intact,” he stresses. Plans are in the works for residential and commercial expansion and increased parking that will double the current number of spaces. As Elkhorn grows, Tyler hopes to purchase another building. “I’d like to do this all over again with five to 10 more artists. I’d like to make this downtown area a lively dedicated artists’ area.” Tyler’s enthusiasm and willingness to serve has forged a real connection between the gallery and the community. He hosts tours for fifth graders who come downtown for history day. “I show the kids around, explain the story of the building, and give them an art lesson. They get to express their creativity and have some fun making their own glass magnets.” Twice a year, the gallery hosts a two-day open house. “It’s an opportunity for people to get to see something completely different and unique, and we display the work of various guest artists. Rotating artists makes it fun.” Plans are coming together for 2020’s snow sculpting competition on February 7–9. They expected 1,000 people last year (their first year), and the turnout was three times that amount. Ten amateur teams from Nebraska competed for first prize: a trip to the nationals in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. “We’re looking forward to more teams competing this year and additional sponsors. We’ll have food trucks, and an ice bar will be on hand with hot chocolate, coffee, schnapps, and apple cider.” The event will also feature a blacksmith with a forge and a bronze sculptor who will pour bronze as well as sculpting ice and snow. Tyler is filled with ideas for the future of the event. The same young man whose future was inspired by the ancient art of forging glass is shaping a bright future for his hometown. Main Street Studios & Gallery is a fun place to browse unique and interesting art pieces. Stop in at 2610 North Main Street, in Elkhorn, to see the artists work and perhaps find that special item for your home or office. Kitchen Remodel A New Look for a New Decade By Anne Yankus

The start of a new decade is a great time to refresh many things in our lives. Why not start with a freshly remodeled kitchen? It’s really the heart of the home, and it may be long overdue for some attention. There are many elements to consider when remodeling your kitchen, but it’s a good idea to look at what is trending in your area. Marble and other stone counters are in, but the pristine white kitchens of yesteryear are just that: in the past. Color is making a comeback, whether it’s veined marble, pops of color on cabinet doors and other accents, or even natural wood cabinetry. Unique items like standout sinks, kitchen larders, plate racks, and double islands are also coming in style. Cabinets are a very popular item to change during a kitchen remodel. If your existing cabinets are solid and you’re happy with their layout, you might consider cabinet refacing instead of gutting the kitchen. Cabinet refacing leaves the framework of your existing cabinets intact and adds a new set of doors and veneer on top that brings the appearance of brand-new cabinets at as low as one fifth of the cost! There are three types of cabinet refacing materials: plastic laminate, rigid thermofoil (RTF), and wood veneer. Plastic laminate comes in a wide variety of designs (from solid colors to wood grains). Rigid thermofoil is more flexible and will therefore fit on a wider variety of cabinet frames, but it typically

comes in fewer colors and patterns. Wood veneers remain the most natural-looking of all your options; they are also the most expensive. If you’ve got the budget and the desire for it, you can completely remodel your cabinets to a new design. For the greatest level of control, you can hire a carpenter to draw and build custom cabinets to your exact specifications. This is an especially good choice if the layout you want is unusual. If you want new cabinets but don’t need anything particularly unique in terms of shapes or sizes, you can go with the less expensive option of pre-made cabinets that are professionally installed. If you like your existing cabinets but find yourself longing for a new color scheme, try a new paint job. Giving your cabinets a fresh coat of paint in a new color can accomplish just as much of ›››

a face lift as refacing but at a fraction of the cost. Keep in mind that all the doors and hardware will need to be removed before painting can begin. The cabinets will need to be meticulously cleaned (they probably have grease on them) and sanded, too. For best results, hire a professional painter. With the cabinets out of the way, the next thing to think about is countertops. Stone countertops are in, from highend materials like quartz and marble to the more affordable but equally durable granite. If you don’t want to spring for a giant slab of stone, you can often get a similar visual using patterned laminates, which come with a much lower price tag and can often be installed on top of your existing countertops. The next thing to consider in your remodeling project is cabinet hardware. Mixing and matching cabinet hardware like knobs and pulls has become increasingly popular over the last year. Before you make new selections, take into consideration any existing holes your previous cabinet hardware has left behind. Brass and bronze hardware are classic options, but crystal, glass, and stone knobs can provide a nice contrast and splash of color to an otherwise monotonous row of knobs. Now that you’ve spent time and money on the counters and cabinets, you want the right lighting to show them off. Hanging lights are rising in popularity, and they can be customized in a variety of ways. From long brass pendants to multi-colored glass lamps to various metal geometric shapes, having unique lighting fixtures can add flair to any kitchen. Task lighting is also vital in the kitchen—you don’t want the vegetables you’re chopping to be in a shadow! Before your project is finished, cast your focus on the floors. There are flooring options out there to fit everyone’s style and budget. Porcelain tile is durable and less porous than ceramic tile, and it can come glazed in a variety of colors or unglazed in natural, earthy colors. Hardwood floors can be resistant to moisture and splashes, are lowmaintenance, and will give your kitchen a warm, classic look. From floor to ceiling and back again, give your kitchen a fresh look going into 2020! Sources for this article included: countryliving.com, homesandgardens.com, thisoldhouse.com, and hgtv.com. WE

To Your Good Health

Don’t Just Get Thin… Get Healthy!

By Leslie Byrne

It’s January, and most of us take the opportunity to swear that this is the year we will finally take off the weight. This year, don’t focus on getting thin. Focus on getting healthy! The health risks associated with obesity are sobering. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), about 93 million adults in the United States are obese. Obesity can cause heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and even some cancers. The good news is that reaching a healthier weight is definitely possible, if you have the right help. Want more good news? You don’t need to get back to your high school weight to be healthy. One measure of healthy adult weight is a body mass index (BMI) between 18 and 24. There are many ways to measure healthy weight—talk to your healthcare provider about what would be healthy for you. Just as important as weight loss is maintaining a healthy weight in the long term. Studies find that yo-yo dieting can cause heart problems. It’s best to adjust your lifestyle to find a healthy diet that will work for a lifetime. How do you know what program is right for you? Before you can choose the best one for you, you’ll need to have a good understanding of where you are, health-wise. A great place to start is at your doctor’s office. Our bodies change over time, and our nutritional needs change, too. The weight loss needs of someone who wants to take off some pregnancy weight may be very different from someone going through menopause or who has

had a health scare.Your doctor can help you figure out your needs. You also need to make sure that your weight gain is not caused by an underlying health issue. Your age and your overall health may help determine which diet you should try. For example, a recent study has revealed that a diet high in protein and low in calories can help older adults lose weight without sacrificing muscle mass or bone density. Let’s take a look at some popular plans for weight loss. ChiroThin includes dietary supplements that have ingredients to promote and increase metabolism. The program includes detoxification from eating anti-inflammatory foods with a low glycemic index (that is, carbohydrates that do not cause a rise in blood glucose and are more slowly digested). The program is supervised by a doctor in weekly meetings. The Jenny Craig diet plan provides prepackaged meals and clients can work with a personal Jenny Craig consultant to achieve their weight loss goals. The strategy is to remove the guesswork about what to eat and to make weight loss simple. This is a good

plan for people who are too busy to cook or find it hard to cook healthy food. Members can benefit from learning how to make better food choices to weekly meal planning and exercise tips from coaching professionals. The First Fitness program focuses on supplements and diet shakes. It offers online support and direction. First Fitness holds online challenges to encourage members. Weight Watchers is popular all over the world. The program does not sell food or supplements; instead, it teaches members how to make smart food choices to lose weight while eating regular food. They use a daily points system to help members eat healthy, and there are no forbidden foods. The support consists of in-person meetings, online meetings, or both. Profile offers one-on-one coaching, personal plans, and a special home scale that makes your weigh-in information available to your coach. The program sells prepared food; members add food from the grocery store. The plan was developed at Sanford Health, a healthcare system with locations all over the world. The focus is on personalized nutrition, activity, and lifestyle coaching. With Metabolic Research Center, the focus is on foods that increase metabolism as well as education on eating healthy. They focus on hormone imbalance as a reason many people struggle to lose weight. Another great option for losing weight and keeping it off is nutritional counseling. Nutritionists address food behavior, teaching clients about nutrition and the health aspects of food. Though nutritionists do not explicitly lead weight loss programs, they can supervise the nutrition in the foods you eat while dieting. If you have medical conditions that must be monitored, your doctor may agree that having you work with a nutritionist would be a healthy option for you. Whatever plan you try, don’t do it alone! All of these programs offer a level of support that increases your chances of not only losing the weight but keeping it off. This year, frame your weight loss goal as reaching a healthy weight instead of just “getting thin.” This mindset, along with the right support, could mean that 2020 is the year you’ll finally meet your weight loss goal! An Inside Look

Roeder Mortuaries “Our Family Helping Yours” By Marge Shoemaker

Roeder Mortuaries are among the oldest in Omaha. In 1912, C.C. Haynes founded the mortuary on North 24th Street, near the current location of the Thomas Funeral Home. Shortly after that, Theodore J. Roeder joined the mortuary which became Haynes-Roeder Mortuary. Later, Theodore was joined in the business by his sons Norman and Ronald which then became Roeder Mortuary. The Roeder tradition of caring has been carried on by his grandson, Jon, and his great-grandson, Brian. “It was a real family business,” Brian recalls. “When Norm and Ron took over, they did the same. That’s how we learned the business.” Brian took a different path than his uncles and father. “After high school,” he relates, “I decided to go into the military and learn some other skills in case I didn’t go into the family business.” In 2003, after leaving the military, he became a full-time Roeder employee. He is currently the president and owner of Roeder Mortuaries. Over the years, the family business has expanded. In 1966, they built the 50th and Ames facility and closed the business on North 24th. The facility at 108th and Maple opened in 1988, and the newest facility (in Gretna) opened in 2006. Brian proudly shares that his father, Jon, coined the slogan “‘Our Family Helping Yours,’ and that’s been the guideline for the family ever since…it’s how we do business. We believe our primary purpose is to provide a caring and careful service to our community—to our neighbors and friends.” It takes a particular skill set to be a successful funeral director, Brian notes. “The primary job directing a funeral is making sure it runs smoothly so the grieving family has nothing to worry about. We are also counselors, giving advice and comfort to families and friends of the deceased. We coordinate all the details involved, from transporting the deceased to dispersing flowers after the funeral. We sometimes help plan the service, contact the minister and military color guard, make arrangements for the obituary, and arrange transportation for the family.” Earning a degree in mortuary science helps, but most of the job is learned by doing. “Balancing being a director, counselor, coordinator, and event planner requires self-motivation. It’s not for everybody,” Brian acknowledges. “I’ve read that 80 percent of those attending mortuary classes drop out before they finish. Many of those who graduate only make it for the first five years of working.” Brian is glad he knew what he was getting into, because the hours are long and the work is emotionally draining, he notes. “You have to be both an introvert and an extrovert.” Challenges abound in funeral direction. There are rules and regulations to follow, and they often vary from

48

January 2020

state to state. A traditional funeral, in which the deceased is prepared at the funeral home, transported to a church for the service, and then transported to the cemetery for interment, is no longer the norm. Cremations offer more options, but county approval is required in Nebraska. When a death happens in another state or another country, other challenges arise with additional paperwork and time requirements. Families spread across the nation must be allowed time for travel. Unforeseen complications and delays make an already difficult time more difficult. Some of these things can’t be avoided, Brian says, but you can relieve some stress on your loved ones by preplanning your own service. Conversations about aging and death aren’t always pleasant, he says, but they’re necessary if you want your preferences known. It’s an opportunity to share details of your life that you would want remembered at your service, such as memberships and affiliations or military service. You can choose your own cemetery and grave location. Preplanning a funeral means that your loved ones won’t have to make important decisions about how to honor you while they are in the early stages of grief. Prepayment of the costs that the mortuary can control is useful, as is being aware of which costs the mortuary cannot control. Brian recommends getting the rest of the family involved in making final arrangements. “Don’t go it alone!” he states emphatically. “Enlist family members or close friends to do things like help sort through pictures for a video tribute. It helps everyone to share.” If you are considering becoming a funeral director, Brian advises you to ask a local mortuary if you can shadow an employee for a day. “Some days are hectic, when we have several funerals. Others are quieter and make time for getting paperwork done. Learn what it’s all about before you make the commitment. There’s a lot more than meets the eye,” he shares. Roeder Mortuaries are located at 2727 North 108th Street (402-496-9000) and 4932 Ames Avenue (402453-5600) in Omaha and at 11710 Standing Stone (402-332-0090) in Gretna. Focus on Finance

Value Investing is on Life Support Today’s Intelligent Investing

By George Morgan

Value investing is a theory about how the stock market works. The operative word here is “theory.” It is not a scientific approach. If something is proven in a scientific context, you can say that if this happens, this will follow, and it does—100 percent of the time. Value investing cannot say anything like that. What it can say is that this is the way we make decisions about when to buy and sell stocks. Sometimes, it turns out the way we think it will; sometimes, it does not turn out that way at all. The way value investing works is that investors gather all the financial and operational data that are available on a publicly traded company. They then calculate what they feel is the firm’s “intrinsic value.” They compare the number they have identified for the firm’s value with the price of the firm’s stock as determined by the investors in the stock market. If the market price is below what they have calculated as the intrinsic value of the firm, they buy the stock. The assumption is that, over time, other buyers will come to the same conclusion and will then also buy the stock. These other buyers will drive the market price of the stock up until it reaches the price that the original investors believed was the firm’s real value. When other buyers move the price of the stock to what the original investors thought was correct, the original investors sell their stock, take their profits, and move on to the next gem. Value investing is the brainchild of Professor Benjamin Graham. Professor Graham was an economist and investor. He began his career by opening a brokerage firm on Wall Street in the late 1920s. In the mid-1930s, he took a position teaching investment theory at Columbia University. His most famous student was Warren Buffett, who took his course on investing and went on to make a fortune for himself and many other people. In 1949, Professor Graham published a manual on value investing titled “The Intelligent Investor.” It has gone through many editions and is still in print today. Value investing’s heyday was during the years from 1980 to about 2000. Value investing’s major competitor is another theory called growth investing. Growth investors couldn’t care less about the price of a stock. The only thing they care about is how fast the underlying company is growing. Their rationale is that even if they overpay for the stock, the company’s rapid growth means that the company’s value will eventually exceed the company’s stock price. In 1981, I became a stockbroker. I took a position with a small firm that lacked a training department, so I was on my own to build a methodology for picking stocks to recommend to my clients. I approached several senior brokers, who all told me to read “The Intelligent Investor.” After reading the

50

January 2020

book, I focused on a firm in northeastern Nebraska that manufactured center pivot irrigators. I calculated the firm’s intrinsic value and saw that the stock price was about half of the intrinsic value, so I began buying the stock for my clients. Months went by…and then years…and the price of the stock never changed. I realized that, for the value investing approach to work, there had to be a bunch of others who used the same approach and came up with the same answer I did. It was obvious that, in this situation (and probably in many others), this was not the case. It was then that I began to have doubts about the validity of value investing. Over time, Warren Buffett’s view of value investing has changed, as well. Starting in the early 2000s, he began recommending that individual investors use index funds for their investment activity. Several years ago, he stepped back further from value investing in the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Report. He announced that, when he dies, the bulk of his fortune will go to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He further stated that he has directed his advisors to take the money that goes to his wife out of Berkshire Hathaway and invest it in an S&P 500 index fund, instead. Why doesn’t value investing work like it used to? The answer is simple. When “The Intelligent Investor” was written, stock trades were made between two humans with a pencil and a black notebook. Humans made rational decisions based on carefully collated information. Today, 80 percent of all trades are made between two computers, with no human interaction whatsoever. Computers are not taking into account a company’s detailed information; all they care about is making money today by finding price differentials among the 13 markets. In today’s world, a passive index fund is perhaps the most intelligent investing. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. Diseases That Endanger Vision Prevention, Diagnosis, Treatment

By Linda Barnes

Most of us treasure our vision—and we should! After all, we receive 80 percent of our perceptions through our eyes. Surveys suggest that 25 million Americans experience vision loss, with results that can be mild to devastating. In addition to regular eye exams, we need to be vigilant about the health of our eyes. Knowing the symptoms of conditions that threaten eyesight is a wise strategy. Common eye conditions include glaucoma, cataracts, and detached retinas. With all these conditions, effective treatments are readily available. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor with highly focused training to identify and treat eye issues. These and other eyecare specialists can identify issues and diagnose diseases in their early stages, when treatment to prevent vision loss is most effective. Glaucoma damages the optic nerve when fluid builds up in the eye, putting pressure on the nerve. Symptoms are usually absent in the early stages, so regular check-ups are necessary, particularly for people older than 40 years. Untreated glaucoma can result in blindness and is the leading cause of blindness for people older than 60 years. Family history, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other health issues increase your risk of developing glaucoma. In some cases, the eye doesn’t drain fluid normally. This increase in fluid creates pressure, damaging the optic nerve. The damage often happens gradually, without pain or vision changes early on.

Your eye specialist has technology to measure the pressure in the eyes and can identify damage to the optic nerve. Once diagnosed, treatment might include daily eye drops. These work either by reducing the amount of fluid produced or by increasing the drainage of fluid. Surgical procedures can increase drainage or even create new drainage channels. The important thing is early diagnosis before serious damage occurs. Cataracts usually develop slowly over time, clouding your view of the world. They can occur at any age but are rare in the young. The clouding of your natural lens more commonly develops with age, often after age 60. Vision may be blurred, colors are less distinct, and poor night vision is typical. A thorough eye exam can detect clouding of the lens. Steps can be taken to aid vision during the early stages of the disease. A change of prescription may help. Increasing task lighting can aid reading, as

www.womensedition.com

can the use of a magnifying glass. Anti-glare eyeglasses may help with night driving. Surgery is not typically recommended until the cataract begins to significantly affect normal activities. At that point, surgery is often highly successful. The cloudy lens is removed, and an artificial lens is inserted. Medicare generally will cover this procedure for patients older than 65 years. My own personal experience with cataract surgery was very positive. Surgery was on an outpatient basis, with a light anesthetic for relaxation and local anesthetic to numb the eye area. I was drowsy but awake during the procedure. I was released soon after, with a patch over the operated eye. The patch came off the following day when I saw the surgeon again. A new development since my husband’s cataract surgery was the elimination of eye drops. He had two different drops to use several times a day. In my case, medicine was injected into my eye, so I didn’t have the bother of drops. Two weeks later, the second eye was done, also uneventfully. I did not need glasses because a near-vision lens was placed in one eye and a distance-vision lens was placed in the other eye. Not everyone can benefit from this fascinating arrangement! I was able to because I had worn contacts for years, utilizing one lens for reading and one for distance, so my brain was accustomed to it. The retina is the lining of the back wall of the eye. It sends signals to the optic nerve, making vision possible. The retina can peel away from the back wall of the eye, losing its blood supply, unable to function normally. This is called a detached retina, and it is an emergency that requires immediate attention. The symptoms can be mild, but don’t underestimate the threat to your vision! Symptoms can include flashing lights, floaters, and a shadowy curtain in the peripheral vision. Tears can develop when the gel-like substance that fills the eye pulls away from the retina. The severity of symptoms usually correlates with the extent of the detachment. Re-attachment of the retina is the treatment goal, along with sealing any tears or holes that initiated the detachment. Surgery, laser treatment, or insertion of a bubble is quite effective, but early intervention is essential to save vision. Our eyes are too precious to ignore symptoms or neglect regular check-ups. Do yourself a favor and take good care of them. Sources for this article included: asrs.org, aafp.org, and aoa.org. WE January 2020

Technology to Tone Your Body Emsculpt and BTL Emsella

By Maria Harding

Body shaping that is non-invasive and virtually pain-free? It may sound like the stuff of science fiction, but it isn’t fiction any longer! Emsculpt is a registered trademark for a procedure that helps both men and women build muscle tone and reduce superficial fat. It is primarily used in the abdomen and buttocks, although programs have been developed for use on the thighs, calves, and arms. Emsculpt procedures are done under the supervision of licensed and experienced professionals at plastic surgery clinics or dermatology spas. Emsculpt is a perfect companion to a good diet and regular exercise. It is generally not appropriate for individuals who are working toward a large amount of weight loss; rather, it is designed to highly refine an already-fit physique. Emsculpt is perfect for individuals who don’t have the time to do the elite-level workouts, training sessions, and specialized diets necessary for those enviable end results seen in magazines. During an Emsculpt session, high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) pulses induce powerful and extremely rapid muscle contractions. These “supramaximal” contractions are many times faster than the voluntary muscle movements used for exercise. Emsculpt causes approximately 650 contractions per minute. The repeated stimulation builds and tones the muscle tissue. It also prompts the fat cells in the area to break down and release

free fatty acids, which are absorbed and filtered out of the body. Emsculpt treatments generally last for 30 minutes and are administered two or three times a week, with a recommended minimum of four sessions. Noticeable results are usually reported within two to four weeks and last for several weeks. Some of the most notable advantages of this non-surgical procedure are that no preparation is required before the procedure and that your body needs no recovery time afterwards. Clients report that Emsculpt sessions are followed by some muscle soreness, much like what is experienced after a strengthbuilding workout. Each session generally has three phases— medium, high, and low intensities. Medium intensity warms up the muscle fibers. During this phase, you’ll feel a tingling sensation similar to a battery shock, accompanied by subtle tightening of the muscles. The high-intensity level will visibly lift the muscles up. This involuntary movement has been described as a very odd sensation with more intense gripping and stronger zaps. The low-intensity cool-down phase feels like a tapping on

the muscles. It is meant to allow lactic acid and toxins to be released from the muscle tissue. If you have areas of your body that just refuse to firm up, despite your dedication to exercise and nutrition, Emsculpt may be just the high-tech boost your body needs to reach your goals. Another body-strengthening procedure that is based on the same general HIFEM technology is BTL Emsella. BTL Emsella is a totally noninvasive electromagnetic stimulation of the pelvic floor muscles to rehabilitate and strengthen neuromuscular control for the treatment of urinary incontinence in women and men. It is most effective when used to treat early signs of incontinence, before surgery would be necessary. BTL Emsella is FDA-approved for both women and men as a treatment for incontinence. As a result of aging, weight gain, childbirth, menopause, or prostate issues, both women and men may experience urinary incontinence. Leakage might happen during a workout, when sneezing or laughing, or at the end of the day. Even without specific physical issues, people may experience an inconvenient frequency in the urge to urinate. Exercises that strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, commonly called Kegel exercises, are the most effective way to help control bladder leakage for many people. BTL Emsella is administered in a special chair that emits HIFEM pulses to target the muscles of the pelvic floor. Clients remain fully clothed, and the pulses essentially cause the pelvic floor muscles to do 11,000 Kegels in a 30-minute session. Most patients need about six treatments, done twice a week. If you are one of 13 million Americans who deal with urinary incontinence, BTL Emsella may be a lifechanging solution. If you are considering either BTL Emsella or Emsculpt, check with your doctor to see if these treatments are right for you. Even though these procedures are non-invasive, it’s important to discuss them with your physician before embarking on treatment. We are truly entering a new age of noninvasive options to strengthen and tone our bodies. Many of these procedures seem too good to be true or like something straight out of a futuristic context. It’s simply remarkable that procedures like these are available to us now! Sources for this article included: health. com, dermatologyconsultants.org, bodybybtl. com, and health.clevelandclinic.org. Driving in Winter The Good, the Bad, and the Icy

By Brennan Hallock

From holidays and get-togethers to snowboarding and skiing to a fresh start on our yearly goals, there’s a lot to love about winter. There’s a lot to dread, too, like icy roads, frigid cold, and dangerous driving. Snow and ice reduce the amount of traction that tires can get on the road. That makes a vehicle more challenging to handle, even for skilled and experienced drivers. Most of us can’t totally avoid driving in wintry conditions, though. No matter what the weather, we’ve all got places to go! There are some precautions you can take, however, to increase your chances of arriving safely. Start by slowing down. The amount of space required to speed up or slow down increases when the roads are slippery. This means that posted speed limits may be too fast for icy conditions. Don’t be afraid to drive slower! It’s better to drive too slowly and arrive late than drive too fast and cause an accident. Keep in mind that other drivers may also be struggling to maintain control of their vehicles. To drive successfully on icy roads, it’s important to understand your brakes. Older vehicles have brakes that lock, which can lead the car to skid and lose control. With this type of brakes, you have to gently pump the pedal to slow down quickly—don’t just push it all the way to the floor. Modern cars, however, have anti-lock brakes that do that work for you. With

anti-lock brakes, press the pedal down firmly and hold it when you need to stop short. In any conditions, tires with adequate tread will improve your stopping and going. In wintry conditions, your tires’ tread will make a major difference in the amount of control you have. If conditions remain icy during much of the season where you live, consider investing in snow tires. The last tip is to promote visibility. With the shorter days of winter, you’ll likely be driving in the dark more often. Add to this winter storms, and it is important to make sure your headlights, wipers, and windshield are prepared to keep your vision clear. Even if you take precautions, you may still find yourself in a winter accident. Wintry road conditions result in about 156,000 accidents in the United States every year. Accidents can be

confusing and disorienting, even if no one is injured, so make sure you know what to do. First, you need to ensure your safety and the safety of everyone else who was in the accident. This usually means moving your vehicle out of the flow of traffic. If you can’t move your vehicle, at least move yourself and your passengers away from the scene of the accident. If it’s dark outside and the roads are slick, passing drivers may have limited visibility, so it’s important to step to a safe location. Next, contact the police and request emergency medical attention, if necessary. If your vehicle is blocking traffic, the police will need to reroute the flow of traffic to avoid more accidents. You will also need to have them file a police report for later use. Take photographs in case you need to show the damage and the road conditions to your attorney or a traffic court at a later date. If there were any witnesses, get their names and contact information. If your vehicle is seriously damaged, contact a towing company. If the police recommend that you not drive your

vehicle away from the scene, take their advice. In many cases, a vehicle that looks drivable is not safe because of internal damage to the radiator or engine compartment. Report the incident to your insurance company and let them handle the details. If the accident is serious, call your attorney, as well. Do not speak to the other driver’s insurance company; leave that to your insurance company or attorney. Your insurance company will help you determine what you should do to repair your vehicle. They will recommend repair shops where you can take your vehicle to be assessed, but you can take your vehicle to a shop of your choice. In the meantime, many insurance companies will provide a rental vehicle for your use. Ask your insurance company if this is an option and if you will incur an extra cost. No matter how carefully you drive, you may end up in an accident caused by icy road conditions this winter. Knowing how best to avoid one and what to do when one occurs can help ease your mind in a difficult situation. Sources for this article included: cars.usnews.com, carsurance. net, and thebalance.com. The Good Life

Wedding Planning Enjoy the Experience, Enjoy the Day

By Angella A. Arndt

Congratulations—you’re getting married! After your initial excitement, you realize that you have to plan your wedding day. Where do you begin? What do you do? It can feel overwhelming, but you can get it done, and you can even enjoy the planning process! The first considerations are determining your budget and your guest list. Keeping these in mind from the beginning will eliminate heartache and over-spending during the planning process. Your biggest expenditures are likely to be your venue, food, and alcohol costs. Your budget and your guest list will go hand in hand—after all, a bigger party is likely a more expensive party. Figure out what wedding items are “must-haves,” and then plan accordingly. Next, select potential dates and venues. You will want to book your venue at least nine months to a year before the wedding, if possible, to ensure availability. What’s your venue budget? What’s your vision? Popular wedding themes are widely varied and include classic, art deco, bohemian, country, modern, natural, romantic, vintage, and whimsical. Set up interviews with potential venues. Is the venue available on your potential dates? What’s the cost and what does it include? How many guests can the venue handle? Is the location convenient for guests coming from out of town? Venues also have different policies about outside vendors. Does the venue have on-site catering, or do you hire your own caterer? If there is on-site catering, do they provide complimentary taste testing? Do they have an event coordinator? Do they have required vendors (for music, flowers, and the like), or can you choose your own? If your venue doesn’t provide food, you’ll need to select a caterer (the venue may have recommendations). Think about the type of food you want to serve. Set up interview appointments and ask if they will provide a sampling during your visit. Aside from their availability on your date, you’ll need more questions answered. Have they previously catered at your venue? Can they customize their menu? What are their most popular items? Can they handle special dietary needs? Is food made on-site or delivered? Do they have the necessary catering licenses and liability insurance? Do they provide an on-site coordinator at the event? Get a copy of the standard contract and review the deposit requirements, cancellation policy, and payment structure. Next up, wedding invitations. Local stationery stores or printers are great resources. You want an invitation that complements your theme, and they’ll help you achieve your vision. Current trends in wedding invitations include watercolor, monograms, gold foil, maps, and fun envelope liners. Save-thedate cards should go out eight to 10 months before

60

January 2020

your wedding (or earlier, for destination or holiday weddings). Invitations should be mailed out eight to 10 weeks before your wedding. Interview photographers and videographers to make sure they are qualified to capture the important moments throughout your day. Think about the style you want, including things like classic, artistic, dramatic, and natural. Obtain references, review past work, and make sure the photographer or videographer specializes in your desired style. Music will enhance the mood of your ceremony and reception. When deciding on songs and instrumentation for the ceremony, think about the venue and the style of your wedding. For the reception: Will there be dancing? Do you want live or recorded music? Your music pro can help you select music to create your desired atmosphere. Flowers add a finishing touch to your special day. What’s your style? Modern, classic, vintage, or rustic? Browse magazines, social media, and floral shop websites for ideas. Florists generally have a unique design style—choose one who fits your vision. Selecting a cake vendor is one of the tastiest parts of wedding planning. Review vendor websites and on-site photo books for ideas. Are there specific cake elements that are must-haves, such as fondant work, hand painting, or fresh flowers? Meet with bakeries and sample their cake before making a decision. A wedding planner is an excellent option for those who would rather have someone else handle some or all of the details. Wedding planners will help you create a budget, negotiate vendor contracts, offer cost-saving tips, and troubleshoot on the big day. A full-service planner handles everything from beginning to end, an à la carte planner handles specific details as assigned, and a day-of coordinator makes sure your day runs smoothly. A wedding planner is worth a look if you want to save time and have a pro in your corner. Whether you choose to handle the arrangements yourself or hire a pro, being organized and planning will help your day run smoothly. You’ll be able to enjoy and cherish one of the most significant milestones of your life. Sources for this article included: herecomestheguide.com, marthastewart.com, theknot.com, and weddingwire.com. Sundance Film Festival 2020 Make Park City Your Home Base

By Jackie Williams

Many travelers and film buffs dream of making it to Park City, Utah, for the annual Sundance Film Festival. This year, it runs from January 23rd to February 2nd. The Sundance Film Festival buzzes every winter as a creative hub of filmmakers and moviegoers alike. They gather to see and talk about their short films, episodes, and documentaries. In addition to the fresh films, there are daily filmmaker conversations, panel discussions, awards ceremonies, and live music events as highlights of the festival. The 10-day festival hosts over 124,000 attendees, spread over three locations: Park City, Salt Lake City, and the Sundance Mountain Resort near Provo. Having a successful trip requires advance planning. Traffic congestion and limited parking mean that the best way to see Sundance is car-free. Enlist your travel agent to help you book strategic lodging (before everything is sold out). Park City’s free, regular transportation makes it an ideal location as a base for your trip. Park City and Summit County’s transit system is the best way to get around, providing easy access to recreational areas, the Historic District, and Kimball Junction. Riding the bus brings great opportunities to talk with fellow festival-goers and get advice about what to check out and where to eat. You’ll meet interesting people from around the world! If this will be your first time attending the Sundance Film

62

January 2020

Festival, you should read Dustin Owl Johnson’s blog post, “Seven Tips for Sundance 2019,” which you can find through the Park City website visitparkcity.com. This seasoned pro has attended nine festivals and worked at the Sundance Institute for almost seven years, so I highly value his advice. The historic silver mining town of Park City has a lot to offer besides the festival. You might as well take advantage of the whole area while you’re in town! Their two world-class resorts, Deer Valley (for skiers) and Park City Mountain are consistently at the top of the rankings in the United States. They also have the largest concentration of luxury ski-in/ski-out lodging in North America. There’s always something going on in Park City, but the festival is a great time to take to the slopes—everyone will be watching films, so you’ll feel like you have the mountain to yourself whenever you want to take a break from the screen. ›››

If you enjoy art and photography, you will be happy to hear about Park City’s walkable art trail. The booming artistic and cultural community has a self-guided tour of public artworks that range from historic to whimsical. Start with a visit to the Old Town Transit Center, where you will find a mural that depicts Park City throughout the years. Outside and down the stairs from the transit center, you’ll find China Bridge Parking Lot, where each level has a different mural representing the flora and fauna of Park City. Among other stops, you will have to find and take selfies with Loosey the Moose and Franz the Bear. Then stop for a hot drink or ice cream at Java Cow and check out one of renowned artist Banksy’s works right outside in the alley. Moving along, you will find the interactive Sound Garden that features several musical instruments you can play. Then, along the Poison Creek Trail, the “school of fish” can be found at the end of the walking trail. Looking for another sightseeing experience? Hop aboard the Heber Valley Railroad, affectionately called the “Heber Creeper.” This historic railroad is located just 20 minutes away from Park City and makes for a nice break from the festival. Scenic views of the Wasatch Mountain and Provo Canyon await you aboard this 100-year-old train. After the Sundance Film Festival is over, you can still catch the films all year in Park City, thanks to non-profit Park City Film. Their programming rivals that of independent theaters in big cities. Park City Film presents personalized and high-quality theatrical experiences, with excellent sound quality and projection as well as things like footage of questionand-answer sessions with the director after the film. Check out sundance.org to choose which films you want to see, and buy your tickets now! Download the Sundance Film Festival mobile app or pick up a printed program guide that has details on each theater, venue, and shuttle route for the festival. Remember that the cities are separated by a 30–75 minute drive, so make sure you choose screenings closest to where you will be staying or leave adequate time for transportation. Then sit back to watch some amazing films and explore Park City! Sources for this article included: sundance.org, visitparkcity.com, and parkcityfilm.org. WE January 2020

Enterprising Ideas

Dr. Maman Lawan Ali Gives Back Holistic, Healthy Living at Miracle Hills Clinic By Janette Calabro

Dr. Maman Lawan Ali is determined to make the world a better place. He’s already accomplished that at a certain level by becoming a health and wellness advocate for his patients, but he’ll never stop trying to improve. His life and his practice were greatly shaped by his education and residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center from 2005 to 2009, but it was medical school in Niger that shaped the soul of his thinking and the grace from which he practices. Dr. Ali left his parents at 13 years old to get his basic education in Niger, living with other family members closer to school. This alone was the first step in his vow to make the world a better place. He learned quickly how to live without electricity or running water and how to get along with his 10 siblings. In Niger, health care was scarce. When he was lucky enough to enter Abdou Moumouni University School of Medicine, he never looked back, except to help those in need. “Niger added value from hardship and difficulty. I learned how to save the most lives with as little resources as possible,” says Dr. Ali. “What inspired me to get here is mostly my drive to do better every day. I don’t think there was any sudden point in my life where I said, ‘I’m perfectly satisfied with where I am right now.’ I think tomorrow can always be better! When it comes to medicine, I think I can always do better. This is what drives my philosophy, my way of seeing things. I’d like to leave this world better than I found it.” Now, Dr. Ali spends his days at the Miracle Hills Clinic, offering evidence-based preventative, medical, and wellness treatments for healthy living. He states that the holistic approach to medical care is on the leading edge today—holistic meaning that everything is connected and that treatment should take into account the whole person. If traditional answers fail, he doesn’t hesitate to tap into his human senses and look outside the box for other ideas. For example, if someone comes in with depression, Dr. Ali provides a conventional examination but also considers the problem from a more creative perspective. Depression can be secondary to other diseases, so treating underlying conditions may improve a patient’s mood and function. The same is true of diabetes—he looks at the whole picture. When implementing therapy targeting deficiencies such as low testosterone, low estrogen, or low progesterone, he notes that appropriate hormone levels usually boost mood. This encourages physical activity, which may ultimately help the patient lose weight and, therefore, control blood sugar levels. Controlling blood sugar for diabetes patients is one

66

January 2020

thing, Dr. Ali points out, and tackling the underlying conditions that trigger diabetes in the first place is another. He chooses to integrate both. “With every element, there is an underlying Dr. Maman Lawan Ali condition. Especially when it comes to treating particularly complex issues such as mental illness, diabetes, and so many others, treatment is case by case rather than just addressing the superficial aspects and individual symptoms of the condition. The bottom line is prevention—looking at underlying causes, and managing chronic illness when initial therapy fails. That’s how we think holistically of our patients; we consider other conditions that are really important. It’s a style of practice. I consider every patient to be complex in the first place.” He addresses hormone treatment comprehensively, too, not focusing on hormones alone. “Our bodies are driven by hormones, vitamins, and micronutrients, which make our metabolism function poorly or not at all,” Dr. Ali says. “A typical 50-year-old woman who seems healthy might feel fatigue, headaches, insomnia, hot flashes, and mood swings. The Green Thumb

Winter Gardening Still a Good Time to Enjoy Nature By Sharon Knerim

Now that summer has left us behind and all things green seem to have faded to a lackluster brown, it seems like there’s nowhere to direct our energy and passion for gardening. Nothing could be further from the truth! There are plenty of activities and chores to keep up our gardening skills and passions until springtime rolls around once again. There is always that excuse that it’s just too cold outdoors to do any gardening work—and there’s some truth to that. However, the exposure to natural life can amazingly and drastically improve both our mental and physical well-being, so it’s worth the effort to find a way to keep gardening front and center. As we begin to spend more and more time indoors due to the weather, it is paramount to transfer most of our gardening energy inside. Look for areas of the home or office where there is enough natural lighting to allow us to successfully carry on some bit of gardening. Many people suffer greatly from the lack of sunlight during the fall and winter months (this is known as seasonal affective disorder or SAD). One way to combat this is to continue with positive and natural habits like gardening. These chores count as physical exercise and can lighten our moods considerably. The question arises: Where can all this indoor gardening

take place? There are plenty of opportunities. A window ledge can become a good location for gardening. To increase growing space in a single window, consider adding shelves for a multilayer effect. Starting an herb garden on a window ledge can give you the chance to enjoy a sunny spot in your home, encourage physical activity, and provide fresh herbs to enhance home cooking. Sage, thyme, and rosemary are good choices for this type of gardening. Parsley and chives are also popular varieties of herbs. Frequent trimming is required to maintain leafy bunches and stop your plants from becoming too leggy. Herb sprigs can be dried and tied into bunches to dress up areas of the kitchen or wrapped gifts. If you are fortunate enough to have a bay window, you will find it a perfect spot for numerous plants. Enjoy the incoming

sunlight as you tend to your miniature garden. This is a good opportunity to start new houseplants by propagation. If propagated correctly, many houseplants can live for generations. Plants such as Christmas cactus or jade plant can be easily propagated. Simply remove a bit of stem or even one leaf and move that plant material into another medium (that is, a different pot). You have just given birth to a totally new plant! Propagation gives a gardener the opportunity to give these young plants as gifts or to use in the trading of plants among gardeners. A young plant is a wonderful token of friendship to give to a friend, neighbor, or fellow gardener. Whether your plants are on a window ledge or simply on a table in front of a window, you should be diligent in preventing leaf scorch caused by the sun. This may sound silly during the middle of winter, but beware. That sunshine coming through the glass is very intense, and plants can end up with something akin to sunburn. Be sure to keep a close watch on these plants. Give their pots a quarter turn on a regular basis (say, once a day) to provide equal opportunity growth and to avoid sun scorch. If necessary, remove plants from the direct sunlight during the brightest part of the day or provide sufficient window coverings to soften the incoming sunshine. If you are not interested in growing edibles or propagating, there is another fun option available for indoor winter gardening. Growing beautiful specimens such as hyacinth, paper whites, or amaryllis can fit the bill here. Getting started is so easy. A good growing medium (the right kind of soil) and a sterilized pot will be required. Simply place the bulbs into the soil at their recommended depth, add soil to cover the bulbs well, add water, and wait for the new growth. Paper whites are stunning in their singular beauty, and the same is true of hyacinth. Hyacinth has the added bonus of a truly lovely, almost intoxicating scent. Have fun gardening inside this winter! See you outdoors again in the spring. Editor’s Note: Sharon Knierim has been a Master Gardener through Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa since 2003. Today she lives on a small farm in western Iowa and looks forward to sharing her passion for gardening with her green thumbed reader friends. WE January 2020

Cuddly Critters

The Ins and Outs of Dog Training Helping Pups Be Their Best Selves By Brie Christensen

When adding a new puppy or dog to the family, one of the first things pet parents often consider is getting the animal trained. Training is a critical part of dog ownership! A well-behaved dog is beneficial for both pet and owner, as well as for others who are involved in the animal’s life. Proper training can help animals avoid behavioral issues down the road, including fears, phobias, or aggression. No owner wants to watch their pup suffer through these problems or risk the chance of their animal harming someone because it hasn’t received appropriate training. Most experts recommend that puppies begin the training process when they are seven to eight weeks old. Training puppies this young can help prevent behavioral issues before they start. Some owners opt to enroll their pets in classes, while others choose to hire a professional trainer. There are benefits to both options. It’s important for owners to understand the differences so they can select the route that will be best for their situation. Training at home with a professional can be very flexible and is typically tailored to fit the owner’s specific training needs. This option is nice for dogs who are easily distracted. Training at home also means that the animal can begin training right away—with group classes, a pup usually needs to be appropriately vaccinated prior to enrolling. Additionally, training at home lowers the risk of an animal developing kennel cough or other viruses that are going around. There are also benefits to training in a group setting. This method offers socialization with other dogs, and the pup learns to listen to its owner outside of the home. In a class, owners also have a chance to watch other dog owners work with their pups and hear the questions and concerns they have, which can result in mutual learning for everyone in attendance. The level of training class depends on the age of the dog. For the youngest pups, classes are geared toward socialization. Dogs that are six months and older will usually attend classes for basic obedience. During class, dogs will learn to interact with other dogs, listen to their owners, and pay attention even when there are many distractions. Other skills that might be taught at a basic class include name recognition and leash walking. Dogs will also learn basic commands like sit, down, stay, come, and heel. Dogs learn these skills through positive reinforcement, in which a reward is given for good behavior. Training classes often meet once or twice a week for several weeks. However, training doesn’t end when the class is over! Pup parents should continue to practice with their animals consistently. Training a dog for service is an entirely different proposition than training for general obedience. Guide dogs, medical alert dogs, and psychiatric service dogs receive specialized training for their roles. Service dogs

are trained by professional organizations or trainers to perform skills that are specific to a handler’s disability. It generally takes one or two years to train a service dog. The training is focused on ensuring that the dog can behave appropriately in public areas while conducting its tasks and work. Dog and owner can practice basic obedience in many places, including at home, in dog training classes, in local parks, in pet stores, and in other dog-friendly places. There are also dogs who are trained to herd, hunt, or do rescue work. Training for these tasks is known as vocational, and there are trainers across the country who specialize in training dogs for various vocations. For example, training a dog for hunting begins at about six months of age. Usually, a trainer begins with the basics, such as getting the dog to come when called and yield to a leash. It’s also wise to introduce dogs to dead prey at this age to kindle a desire for hunting. At about eight to 11 months, animals are usually taught to retrieve. As they reach one year and beyond, they’ll learn to sit still and be quiet during the hunting process. It’s important that owners remain vigilant each time the dog sets out to hunt. Consistency is the key to any type of training. Whether you’re training a dog for service, hunting, or general obedience at home, the process is ongoing. Any dog can steer off the path at times, but it’s important for owners to stick with their animals and not give up on the end goal. After all, a well-behaved dog leads to a safer and happier life for the whole family. Sources: akc.org, news.orvis.com, psychdogpartners.org, outdoorlife.com, and homeoanimal.com. WE

Positive Perspective

Go Ahead and Make Mistakes At Least You’re Doing Something “We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is Opportunity, and its first chapter is New Year’s Day. —Edith Lovejoy Pierce I love this quote! A new year is a wonderful time to make a decision about how we are going to be in the coming months… and this year, we get to decide how we are going to be in the next decade! The twenties are here! It’s time to try out different approaches to old challenges. It’s time to shake things up in all areas of our lives. It’s time to make some mistakes! “Make mistakes, because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and, more importantly, you’re doing something.”—Neil Gaiman Doing something…wow. Making goals in regard to our health, our relationships, our finances—this is typically what we pledge for our New Year’s resolutions. I have heard that most of us have broken our New Year’s resolutions by the time the end of January rolls around. Breaking a resolution can make it feel like it was a mistake to set the goal in the first place. However, walking into this decade

knowing that we will make mistakes—and that this is a GOOD thing—makes life feel like an exciting adventure instead of an unattainable mountain peak. At least, as the quote says, we are doing something. “What the New Year brings to you will depend a great deal on what you bring to the New Year.”—Vern McClellan Making mistakes is a scary thought to most of us. I think it may go back to our school days, when the teacher would mark our papers in red ink when we made mistakes. I don’t know about you, but I did not relish seeing my school paper all marked up in red. It felt like a bad thing. This new approach, that mistakes are good things, feels a whole lot better. This idea has given me permission to try new things, to take more chances, to live a fuller life. It has given me an entirely new perspective on goals. A whole new perspective on change. If my plan A doesn’t work out, I can always move on to Plan B. “As long as you’re alive, you’ll always have a Plan B.” —Kristen Granata Let’s make the coming decade a terrific one...and let’s make lots and lots of mistakes!
