Wedding Bells! Points of Interest
Happy summer, everyone! It’s been a HOT one! I couldn’t believe how warm Memorial Day weekend was. I heard it hadn’t been that warm for close to 100 years. I don’t know if that was true, but it was a great way to kick off the summer. I hope all of you have had a chance to do some serious relaxing. It seems that everyone I talk to is running crazy—all of the time. My daughter, Carissa, and her family are no exception. We were trying to plan get-togethers for the summer, so everyone brought out their phones to see what would work. Between Carissa and her husband’s schedules, vacations, and the girls’ camps, there were just a few days that were available. Crazy! On another note, I am happy to announce that there will be a wedding in the Van deWalle family in September. My son, Adam, and his girlfriend, Sam Taylor, are going to tie the knot! Sam has been part of this family for over 10 years. She and Adam met in high school and have been together ever since. Congratulations, guys! Sam and Adam recently rescued a Newfoundland mix puppy—a very cute dog. They named him Doug. I think that it’s always a good idea to test out parenting by adopting a puppy. Sam and Adam already have two cats, but puppies are different. You learn a lot about each other when someone has to let the dog out in the middle of the night! Sam shared with me the other day that it has made them realize that they might not be ready for parenting quite yet. Sam searched online and found that Doug will likely weigh more than 120 pounds at adulthood. Wow! That’s another person! The important things are that they love Doug and that the experience is helping them learn more about one another. Sam and Adam are planning the wedding with the help of Sam’s mom, Kathy. They’ve chosen an outdoor venue on a farm, and I’ve been told that it’s going to be very casual. I looked at the pictures, and it just seemed to “fit” them both. I admit, it’s kind of nice to just be a bystander and watch the thing unfold. I’ve got to plan the rehearsal dinner…I have a few ideas I’m going to run by them soon. Before we know it, summer will be gone, and the wedding will be just around the corner! Let’s all make a decision to take some time to relax this summer. Everyone I know works so hard, even those friends who are retired. Stop and smell the roses! Spend time with your families and create some great summer memories! We’ll talk next month!

! e m i T n o i t Va c a What to Bring? Tips for Packing with Ease By Holly Bell
We’ve been waiting all year for this—vacation season is finally here! Let’s make packing less intimidating by keeping it simple. I will never forget a trip I took a few years ago, before the extra charges for luggage were implemented. I took seven suitcases! One was filled entirely with shoes. Needless to say, it was a big hassle toting all that around, and my husband won’t forget it, either! The worst part? I only wore about a third of what I packed. Luggage restrictions force us to streamline and be savvy travelers. As it turns out, I actually find it less stressful to travel when I have fewer clothing choices...plus, if I fit all my clothes in one carry-on, I don’t have to wait around at baggage claim! When you’re choosing clothes for a trip, the first thing to consider, of course, is your destination… and I don’t just mean dressing for the weather. For instance, people in Europe and people in America dress quite differently. There are differences within America, too. Californians dress considerably more casually than New Yorkers do. The last thing you want to do is stand out as a tourist. The first time I visited San Francisco, I packed sundresses. It’s sunny California, right? Wrong! Northern California attire is very different from Southern California attire. I certainly stood out in my yellow sundress while the natives were sporting black leather jackets. It’s important to do a little investigative work on your location before you start making a packing list. Yes, I said a packing list. Making an actual, physical list is important, even if you think you will remember everything (you won’t). Here is a list of priorities that will remain similar no matter what your destination. Just use this as your starting point and customize it for your own travel! 1. Bring comfortable walking shoes. This is first on the list for a reason! Forget those cute heels—comfortable, flat walking shoes will make your trip more pleasurable, I guarantee it. If you’re anticipating dressier occasions on your trip, bring along a cute

pair of neutral (skin-toned) sandals with a small wedge, some ballet flats, or platforms. 2. Bring flip-flops or slides, even if you are not going to the beach. You will be glad you have them to wear in your hotel room and while going to the spa or whirlpool. 3. To make sure you don’t forget any toiletries, you should mentally take yourself through your morning and bedtime routines and list each item you use, including medications. Don’t forget the medications you only use occasionally, such as aspirin, allergy medications, stomach ailment medications, sunscreen, and so on. If you are flying, be sure to check the airline’s guidelines for carry-on items. 4. You’ll be glad to have an all-purpose jacket or sweater that can work with everything. Even if you’re going to the desert, it gets chilly at night—not to mention those air-conditioned restaurants. A jean jacket looks cute with anything and can be worn on the airplane to save room in your suitcase. 5. Figure out a color scheme and stick to it. Black with white or one color is always good. To get the most use out of the fewest clothing items, you need to be able to mix and match everything you bring. For every set of bottoms, bring two tops. For dressier occasions, I suggest a little black dress or a little white dress. A gathered skirt with an elastic waist can be pulled up under your arms and used for a bathing suit cover-up! 6. Keep jewelry to a minimum and leave the expensive stuff at home. Jewelry is so easily lost, broken, or stolen! One necklace that goes with everything, along with a pair of earrings and a watch, is all you really need when you’re traveling. A long, rectangular, multipurpose scarf is a useful accessory on vacation. Use it as a bathing suit sarong, shrug it around your shoulders with a sleeveless top, tie it around your waist for a belt, or toss it around your neck instead of the necklace. Let’s pack like champions so we can implement a vacation mindset. Let’s beat the heat and leave behind the stressors of home and work. Let’s slow down, take a moment to breathe, and smell the flowers, or the surf, or the forest, or the jungle. Are we there yet? GRILLED SHRIMP
Grilled Shrimp In a large bowl, mix one-fourth cup of olive oil, 4 cloves of minced garlic, 2 teaspoons of lemon zest, 1 teaspoon of red pepper flakes, and salt and pepper as desired. Mix well. Add 2 pounds of peeled and de-veined shrimp. Stir gently to coat the shrimp and then refrigerate for 20–30 minutes. When ready to grill, skewer the shrimp (remember to soak the skewers if they are wooden). Grill the shrimp for 3–4 minutes per side (or sauté in a skillet) until pink. Serve hot or cold. Holiday Morning Muffins Mix 2 Tablespoons of boiling water with 2 Tablespoons of powdered instant espresso; set aside. In a large bowl, combine three-fourths of a stick of soft butter with two-thirds cup of sugar and beat until fluffy. Add 1 egg, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, and the espresso mix. In another bowl, mix one and three-fourths cups of flour, one and one-half teaspoon of baking powder, and one-half teaspoon of salt. Add the dry mixture to the wet, alternating with one-fourth cup of milk. Fold in three-fourths cup of semisweet chocolate chips. Mix. Spoon batter into a lined cupcake pan. Bake at 375 degrees for 15–20 minutes, until muffins are golden brown and an inserted toothpick comes out clean.
Brunch Mimosas In a large pitcher, blend one 6-ounce can of frozen lemonade concentrate, one-fourth cup of orange-flavored liqueur, one-fourth cup of warm honey, and a bottle of chilled champagne. Put several freshly cut strawberries in the bottom of each glass. Pour in the lemonade mixture and serve. Bruschetta Thinly slice 3–4 fresh tomatoes (or cut into cubes). brush lightly with olive oil. Assemble bruschetta with tomatoes, thinly sliced mozzarella, and several leaves of fresh basil. Drizzle with a bit of olive oil or good balsamic vinegar. Toast or grill for a minute. You may also top them with cooked shrimp, thinly sliced cooked tuna, onion jam, thinly sliced steak, or chicken. Favorite Hot Beef Dip Blend two packages (8 ounces each) of softened cream cheese with one and one-fourth cup of sour cream, 2 minced scallions, and one-half teaspoon each of garlic powder and Old Bay (or several dashes of hot sauce). Add 2–4 ounces of minced dried beef (in the meat aisle) and 3 slices of crisp, crumbled bacon. Mix well and pour into a baking dish. Top with 1 cup of chopped toasted pecans. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Serve with toasted breads, crackers, or veggies. Best Baked Beans Cook 1 pound of hamburger or turkey and drain off the grease. Cook 5 or 6 strips of bacon until crisp, then dice. Place the meat in a slow cooker with 1 can of drained butter beans, 2 Tablespoons of brown sugar, 2 cans of prepared pork and beans, 1 can of drained garbanzo beans, 1 can of drained black beans, and 1 can of drained kidney beans. Pour in three-fourths cup of ketchup or chili sauce, 1 Tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, and one-half cup of molasses. Add half of a chopped onion and a clove of minced garlic. Add salt and pepper to taste. Cook for 4–5 hours on low in the slow cooker or for 2 hours in a 325-degree oven. Hot Diggity Dogs Make a shallow cut from end to end of a good quality beef hot
dog. Place on a piece of heavy duty aluminum foil and pile on sliced red onions, sliced peppers, spices—anything you like. Fold the foil to make a packet. Make as many hot dog packets as you need, and then place them on the grill for 10 minutes or until cooked through. Serve on buns along with fresh coleslaw, sauerkraut, mustard, ketchup, relish, beans, and all your favorite hot dog toppings. Red, White, and Blue Cake Pops For the cake pops: Bake your favorite cake in a 9x13-inch pan. Let it cool and then put the cake in a large bowl. Add about one-half cup of canned frosting and stir until you get a mixture that sticks together. Roll into balls (about the size of golf balls) and push one cake pop stick into each one. Refrigerate for 1 hour. For the frosting: Melt 1 package of white almond bark and divide into 3 bowls. Leave one bowl white for white frosting and use food coloring to make the remaining bowls red and blue. Dip the cake pops into the white frosting and then drizzle with the red and blue frosting. Sprinkle with holiday sprinkles or sugars. Refrigerate until set. Makes 24. Holiday Apple Pie You will need 2 pie pastries, either homemade or purchased. Peel and thinly slice 6 apples (a combination of Granny Smiths and reds). Mix together three-fourths cup of sugar, one-fourth cup of brown sugar, 2 Tablespoons of flour, and 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon. Pour the mixture over the apple slices and toss. Put one pie pastry in the pie pan and pour in the apples. Dot the apples with 3–4 cubes of butter. Place the second pastry on top, flute, and vent. Put the pie on a cookie sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 50–55 minutes, until golden and bubbly. WE

Mendlik Orthodontics Advanced Technology for Better Smiles By Jackie Byers
Dr. Mark Mendlik is proud to be a second-generation orthodontist whose patients cheer about his treatment with Invisalign aligners and braces. Dr. Mendlik’s wife, Lisa, serves as business coordinator. “We consider it an honor to educate the public about what we do to improve their oral hygiene and make their smiles bright, their teeth straight, and their bites properly aligned,” Lisa says. Dr. Mendlik earned his DDS with honors from the Creighton University School of Dentistry and his MS from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He began his practice in 1997. He provides all types of treatments, but he notes the growing popularity of Invisalign aligners. “More and more of my patients want the Invisalign product because it offers so many advantages for many of our patients,” he explains. “This treatment is effective for teenagers and adults. Invisalign products are made by Align Technology, which was founded in 1997.” One of these advantages is the ease of taking the model of your teeth. “Because of the advances in orthodontics, no messy, foul-tasting goop goes in your mouth,” Dr. Mendlik notes. Your first appointment to begin Invisalign treatment will consist of an initial scan, at no cost, using the iTero Element Scanner. The scanner digitally captures a detailed 3D model of your teeth and gums. It is more comfortable in your mouth and much faster and more precise than earlier imaging processes. The precision means a better fit and better results. “With this piece of equipment, Dr. Mendlik can give the patient a clear image of the results achievable with this treatment,” Lisa says. “Then, Dr. Mendlik will explain your individual treatment plan.” The Invisalign system is known among orthodontists and patients as being less invasive than the tightening that brackets and wires require. “Our patients report only moderate discomfort. The desired results can be achieved more quickly than with the older systems. Patients also praise the ease of seating their aligners with the VPro5,” Lisa continues. “This device for aligner seating works by providing high-speed vibrations and requires just five minutes a day at home.” Another feature that patients love: Invisalign allows them to remove the aligners to clean their teeth thoroughly after eating. Compare that to brushing around brackets and wires! Thorough cleaning is essential to long-term oral health. Some patients have laughingly reported a bit of weight loss because they snack less, since they don’t eat while they’re wearing their aligners.
12
July 2018
“One option that parents like for their teenagers using Invisalign,” Lisa explains, “is the blue dot.” This small dot on the rear of the aligners fades over time and can indicate whether or not patients are wearing the aligners for the recommended amount of time. “Dr. Mendlik has had great results with teenagers in both compliance and cleaning,” Lisa notes. The testimonials on their website, mendlikortho. com, praise the excellent staff, their careful attention to patients’ needs and questions, and the ease of scheduling a convenient appointment. One teenager gives an enthusiastic “Yippee!” for his Invisalign treatments. Satisfied Invisalign client LK reports, “I am so impressed with my results. As a coffee and red wine drinker, I wanted my straightened teeth to be dazzling, as well. Dr. Mendlik provided a fantastic boost to my smile! This amazing crew helped me form a treatment plan with whitening based on my lifestyle and goals. I can’t say enough about the friendly and knowledgeable staff at Dr. Mendlik’s office.” Dr. Mendlik can give you straighter teeth and a dazzling smile. Of course, patients need to be compliant and wear their aligners daily and nightly. Most importantly, clean your teeth every time you eat! Toothbrushes and toothpaste are easily portable, so it’s not a hassle to keep them with you—you just need to get into the habit. Dr. Mendlik works from his office at 17775 Mason Street, Suite 2. He also provides treatment in Fremont at 1830 Bell Street. To make an appointment at either of these locations or to inquire about available payment plans, call 402-334-2000 or visit mendlikortho.com. “We are proud of the team we have assembled,” Dr. Mendlik and Lisa conclude. “Together, we can make your smile straighter and brighter.” WE

A Woman’s Work
New Babies, New Ideas The Mystery of Childbirth
By Sharon Knierim
Most women share the miraculous ability to bear children. Some of us have blessedly passed through our childbearing years, some of us are still in the thick of it, and some of us are just entering this wondrous phase. Even those of us who do not bring any children into the world never fail to be awestruck by maternity, pregnancy, and the wonder of giving birth. Let’s be honest, though—not all of us mothers recall those nine or 10 months as a fairy tale that offered nothing but a happy ending. Pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum period can be very challenging. Our bodies are asked to perform tasks which are absolutely miraculous, and, of course, only women can perform this duty. For many of us, there is the interminable morning sickness (which is certainly not limited to the morning hours alone!). For some of us, there is the inescapable heartburn or that terrible taste of metal in the mouth. We were expecting that our clothes wouldn’t fit, but even our shoes don’t seem friendly. Our skin and hair can become unruly, and our moods can swing from “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” to Hagatha the Witch. No matter. In just a few short months, a brand-new person will arrive and change everything forever. Throughout human history, we have accepted pregnancy as a

matter of fact. It is, after all, part of life. This most natural of human functions has been viewed differently by different societies, ranging from nothing special to placing the mother-to-be or the new mother on a pedestal. There are different ways of thinking about pregnancy, childbirth, and early motherhood. Today, childbirth seems to be experiencing a “rebirth.” At one time, in some societies, pregnant women were kept from the public eye. Once they had reached a certain stage of pregnancy, they went into “confinement.” I suppose they spent their time knitting booties and making layettes. More recently, pregnancy was viewed as a medical issue, compared to an illness or a temporary disability. Currently, pregnancy is enjoying being what it is, and that is life renewing itself. Today, we see pregnant women everywhere, and what a joyous sight it is! Pregnancy wardrobes have become

more flattering and easier to live with. During the 1950s and 1960s, maternity clothing was often festooned with lace, frills, ruffles, and other doodads. For many of us, these garments did nothing to add to the joy of the moment. Thank goodness someone finally realized that being pregnant does not mean having to look like a circus act! Many maternity dresses show off rather than hide that growing bump and help us celebrate the fact that there is someone soon to be born. Although I can’t cite any scientific evidence of the “feel good” factor, we all know that looking good helps us feel good. When senior women encounter a pregnant woman, all kinds of memories come rushing back as we take time to remember our own pregnancies and deliveries. It’s a special gift to those of us who have passed through our childbearing years. In the face of increased technology and care, it’s a pretty good time to have a baby. Today’s expectant mothers can be assured of their baby’s health and critical development even before the baby has been born. New methods of childbirth are available to make labor and delivery easier. We are seeing a resurgence of midwives, and doctors and their teams offer the best support available for both mother and baby. This wonderful time in a woman’s life now can be less frightening and uncertain. What about after the delivery, when the support team has gone home? The new mom is left physically exhausted, experiencing at least some degree of pain and, in some cases, challenged by postpartum depression that is sometimes mistaken for “just” the blues. Although it is not generally well known, there are services available for expectant mothers and new moms to help them cope with problems and challenges accompanying pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. While waiting for baby to be born, it’s a good idea to spend time gathering information about the birth experience and what to expect. Studies do show that women equipped with knowledge before childbirth experience less fear, fewer drugs, and fewer forceps deliveries. Services such as physical therapy, classes designed especially for women who need a little extra support, and other methods of help are now sometimes covered by insurance plans. Be sure to check them out. After all, the more knowledge you possess and the more confidently you can advocate for yourself and your baby, the better you will feel as you begin this new chapter of life. WE

Vantage Point
Precision Compounding The Medication Masters of the Metro
By Elizabeth French
Precision Compounding hasn’t stopped growing since its doors opened eight years ago, thanks to the teamwork of its owners, Nancy Johnson and Jodi Peterson. Nancy brings compounding experience from her hometown in North Dakota, while Jodi’s background is in pharmaceutical marketing. They’re the perfect duo to offer reliable pharmaceutical compounding services to the metro area. The facility at Precision Compounding has an open layout, so customers can see the ins and outs of their medications as soon as they walk through the door. A sterile room is required to compound medications which is also utilized for injectables, everything is separated by airtight glass doors that keep conditions safe and up to code. Lisa Baine, PharmD, raves about the open setup of the business. “It’s really great because we can see everything that’s going on,” she says. “We can see all the foot traffic, so we can see and ask if anyone needs help.” The full-time pharmacists on staff are extremely knowledgeable in the field, which is one of the great advantages to choosing Precision Compounding for supplements, medications, creams, or any other type of medication. With the ability to develop their own dosages and formulas, doctors “are getting the exact medications that they want their patients to have, and their word of mouth helps to establish that we are reliable,” says Lisa. When it comes to sitting down with new patients, they stay consistent. “Every first-time patient gets brought into the consultation room, so we can answer the patient’s questions and explain the medication and how it works.” This is a level of customer service you might not get at a retail pharmacy. While they understand that everyone is in a rush, the pharmacists at Precision Compounding want to be 100 percent sure that you know exactly what you are taking before you leave their facility. Medication compounding can be useful for many different reasons. As more people find out about food allergies and intolerances, compounding pharmacies become even more popular resources because they can customize a supplement or medication that ensures it will contain no allergens. Vegans and vegetarians appreciate Precision Compounding’s ability to make gelatin-based supplements without the use of animal products. Currently, their expertise in nutritionals is growing along with the needs of the public. Because the FDA does not regulate supplements, Lisa notes, patients have to place great trust in manufacturers and pharmacies. She points to testing done in New York a few years ago

to determine the ingredients of certain supplements and compare that to the label on the bottle. “Not only did they not have what they said they did as far as the active ingredient, but they said they were gluten-free and actually had traces of wheat. Consumers have to be very careful with what they buy.” Because of this, every brand at Precision Compounding comes with a certificate of analysis, which reports the exact ingredients in every supplement bottle. Bioidentical hormones are another of Precision Compounding’s specialties. Bioidentical hormones have the same structure as those produced by the human body, meaning they fit exactly into the receptors of the body. Along with allergies, hormone imbalance is a medical issue that is beginning to gain traction and awareness. Because of this, Precision Compounding offers home testing kits that allow patients to test their hormone levels at home. “You can test for a whole panel of things,” Lisa says. “You don’t pay us for the kits; you pay the company once you decide to do the testing.” Patients of all ages are dealing with hormone issues, Lisa asserts—hormone regulation is not just for aging women. “I think people hear ‘hormones’ and think of menopause, but it’s really for men and women of all ages for different reasons,” she says. Co-owner Jodi agrees that they have been seeing more men come in for testosterone regulation. Clients appreciate the service and quality they receive at Precision Compounding, not to mention the cleanliness of the pharmacy. “The service is impeccable,” says one satisfied client. “Everyone is helpful—and talk about sterile! Squeaky clean! I feel so safe having my compounds made here. Thanks, Precision Compounding, for eight great years.” “We can compound a medication to help any division of medicine,” Lisa concludes, and she’s not exaggerating—they create pharmaceutical compounds for pediatrics, pain management, dentistry, otolaryngology, dermatology, even veterinary medicine! If you’re looking for a compounding pharmacy you can trust to deliver the personalized medication that you need, look no further than 15722 West Center Road, in Omaha. Fresh Concept
Benched by Sticking Joints? Get Moving Again With Orthopedic Procedures By Kylie Gumpert
One of the unfortunate truths about life is that joints wear out over time. Maybe it’s a knee that gets a little stiff, or a shoulder that hasn’t been the same since you injured it, or arthritis that’s making it hard to type. Joint pain can be a real bummer, and it can sneak up on you. Even something like a little excess weight can start to cause trouble with your hips, which makes it difficult to exercise as much as your doctor recommends, which makes you gain more weight—it’s a vicious cycle. If any of these situations sounds like yours, it might be time to consider a joint replacement procedure. Joint replacement is an orthopedic surgery that can involve removing worn or damaged joint material and replacing it with a prosthetic joint made from plastic, metal, or ceramic. Surgical procedures to treat painful, worn-out joints can include total joint replacement, partial joint replacement, or smaller, less invasive procedures that repair soft tissue or cartilage within the joint. Women are significantly more likely than men to undergo joint replacement surgery, often because of joint inflammation, pain, and damage caused by arthritis. However, according to a study presented at the annual meeting for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), younger people and more men are now getting this type of surgery. Surgeons speculate that the changing demographics are due to increasing obesity rates as well as more active populations who want to maintain their mobility as long as possible. Invasiveness ranges from total replacement surgery, where joints are completely replaced, to partial replacement, where joints are partially replaced, to more minimal procedures to repair, replace, or remove tissue and cartilage that surround or are part of joints. Even total replacement surgery varies in invasiveness—depending on your particular situation, techniques that require a smaller incision and less muscle detachment may be suitable. Most popular is knee replacement surgery, which is actually considered “resurfacing” because only the top layer of the femur and tibia bones are replaced with metal parts. They are then separated with a spacer made from plastic. In some cases, the back of the kneecap is also resurfaced to fit with the new parts. These replacement parts come in different sizes to fit different patients. A study from the Archives of Bone and Joint Surgery found that shoe size is one of the best predictors for determining how large or small a knee replacement part should be. With that estimate, surgeons can order parts that will fit and lead to better healing. Over 90 percent of patients report reduced pain and increased mobility, according to the AAOS, but it’s important to remember the limitations that surgeries like this can have. A knee replacement should last for several years and should allow you to walk, hike, bike, dance, or swim like you used to, but surgeons don’t recommend that you take on the highest-impact activities. Within three
20
July 2018
to six weeks, you should be able to resume activities such as walking or climbing stairs as well as special exercises meant to increase mobility. The same goes for total hip replacement surgery. Since the hip is a ball-and-socket joint, total replacement surgery involves removing and replacing both the ball, or femoral head, and the socket, or acetabulum, which is part of the pelvic bone. For smooth movement, the surgeon will also insert a spacer made from metal, ceramic, or plastic between the new ball and new socket. There is debate over whether a posterior approach (from the back of the hip) or anterior approach (from the front) is more effective. Some surgeons say patients tend to recover more quickly and experience less pain when they undergo anterior surgery, but posterior surgery does not involve cutting through as much muscle. The general consensus seems to be that surgeon skill matters most. Many people report decreased pain and increased mobility with this surgery. The shoulder is another balland-socket joint that, depending on the damage to the bone, may only need to be partially replaced or resurfaced. In cases where a patient has severe damage to the arm muscle (specifically, the rotator cuff), regular replacement surgery will not relieve the pain. In these cases, reverse total shoulder replacement, where the prosthetic ball and socket are switched, is used. Patients will need to use a sling for up to four weeks after shoulder replacement surgery. They can resume activities such as dressing unassisted after a couple of weeks as their healing continues. The wrist is a more complex joint because it’s made up of several bones. It can be replaced with two metal pieces that are inserted into the radius and carpal bone, then cushioned with a spacer. A patient will need to wear a cast for the first few weeks and a splint for up to eight weeks after that. If a patient is suffering from issues related to the soft tissue around the wrist joint, other treatment may
www.womensedition.com
be needed. Carpal tunnel syndrome causes pain, tingling, and numbness in the hand and arm as a result of pinching of the medial nerve, which travels down the arm and through a space called the carpal tunnel in the wrist. If nonsurgical options like splinting and medication don’t work, carpal tunnel release surgery may be used. A surgeon will cut the ligament that forms the roof of the carpal tunnel to allow more space for the nerve, relieving pressure. Trigger finger causes pain and locking of the finger and is often caused by arthritis, diabetes, or repetitive hand movements that involve grasping. Bands of tissue that help attach forearm muscles to fingers swell or sometimes thicken from disease, making it difficult for tendons to slide back and forth as they should. As a result, the finger gets stuck in a bent or curled position. Trigger finger release surgery cuts the tissue that is preventing the tendon from moving smoothly. In total ankle replacement, a surgeon will remove damaged bone and cartilage, attach a metal piece to both the end of the tibia and the top of the talus, and then insert a plastic spacer. Less intensive is arthroscopic debridement, or cleansing, where troublesome bone spurs and loose cartilage are removed from around the joint. Another option is arthrodesis, where the joint bones are completely fused to prevent painful motion from occurring. Full recovery for these procedures can take up to nine months. Technology isn’t perfect yet, but by using a combination of CT scans, MRIs, and other 3D imaging tools, surgeons can capture more accurate renderings of bone and create better replacement parts. This reduces the chance of misalignment and the need for revision surgeries or procedures to further replace replacement parts that become worn over time. Minimally invasive procedures that are showing promise as
alternatives to surgery are stem cell therapy and platelet-rich plasma therapy. When concentrated stem cells or plasma derived from your own body are injected into a damaged joint, your cells can more quickly and effectively regenerate and heal damage such as torn ligaments or injury to cartilage and bone. Some injuries or joint issues simply require surgery, but, as we learn more about using the body’s own healing systems to our advantage, fewer people may need to go under the knife. For osteoarthritis in particular, several clinical trials have shown stem cell therapy to be a simpler and less invasive (and, therefore, less stressful) treatment, according to a study from the World Journal of Stem Cells. Experts note that more study is needed to establish the best standards for these treatments, such as how many cells are sufficient to stimulate more effective healing. If you think you may be a candidate for orthopedic surgery, begin by asking your primary care doctor to refer you to a boardcertified orthopedic surgeon. The AAOS also has an online directory where you can look for specialists in your area who are board-certified and have the necessary experience in the procedure you need. As these procedures have gotten better and better over time, they’ve brought significant pain relief and increased mobility for the vast majority of patients who decide to try them. Life’s too short to live in pain or miss those special moments because of joint trouble. If you’re in serious pain or frustrated with your physical abilities and aren’t sure where to turn next, see if there’s something an orthopedic specialist can do for you! Bickford Senior Living Communities Loving, Personal Memory Care
By Marge Shoemaker
Mary Bickford took care of others throughout her life. As the oldest of four children, she helped her mother. After she married, she tended to her own family. As she aged, she looked after her extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins. When the family noticed that Mary was acting strange, they took her to a doctor, who recommended that she stay in the hospital overnight for observation. While hospitalized, she continued her caring ways by interacting with other patients. Sadly, the doctors diagnosed Mary with Alzheimer’s disease. Her family wanted to help Mary age in place, but her needs gradually became more than they could handle. The nursing homes they visited felt too impersonal. At a family meeting, they decided to build a home for Mary where she could enjoy her own possessions but would have the security of 24-hour care. This was the seed that grew into the Bickford Senior Living Communities. Amy Brinley, the executive director of Bickford of Omaha - Blondo, uses that tree metaphor to explain Bickford’s philosophy: Mary’s story provides the seed. The leaves are the services offered, including
independent living, assisted living, and memory care. The branches are the individual Bickford residences, situated in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, and Virginia. The branches are designed to recreate “the special place” that every family wants for their elderly loved ones. The roots of the tree are the caring staff members who treat residents more like family than patients. Bickford branches provide each resident with a safe, secure home. Medications are carefully regulated

Koca Chiropractic Practical Solutions for What Pains You By Elizabeth French
Dr. Lyle Koca exudes passion and enthusiasm for his work, which becomes especially contagious upon entering Koca Chiropractic at 11420 Blondo Street. Celebrating 30 years of helping patients in 2019, Koca Chiropractic has been at this location since 2015 and is always expanding to help patients of all ages heal their bodies from the ground up. Dr. Koca grew up across the street from a chiropractor in Exeter, Nebraska. He had no idea what went on in the doctor’s office, but he got curious when cars began parking in the lot as early as 7:00 in the morning to line up outside the door. “People would get out and line up at the door like they were going to a rock concert,” Dr. Koca recalls. He couldn’t help but wonder what the doctor was doing in there. He found out when the chiropractor came to speak during one of Dr. Koca’s high school classes. The doctor explained the concept of the Autonomic Nervous System Chart, which is what Dr. Koca uses to this day. The chart shows which spinal segments relate to which nerves and where they are located
in the body. “The role of the nervous system is to perceive the environment around you and keep the body in a state of homeostasis or balance,” Dr. Koca explains. Things such as sweating, digestion, and respiratory rate are all functions of this system. Therefore, Dr. Koca advises, “if the nervous system is less than optimal, you need to get your nervous system checked.” Later in high school, Dr. Koca threw out his lower back playing basketball, leading him to a series of strained encounters with his medical doctor. “He did what he was trained to do—gave

Good Looks
Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow Treatment Options for Hair Loss By Loretta McCollum
A stylish mane has been an important component of self-image since ancient Greek and Roman times. It has long been associated with wealth and royalty, and it still greatly impacts self-confidence today, particularly among females. Let’s face it—first impressions count, and being well-coiffed certainly influences that first reaction. Many women will acknowledge that a bad hair day can mean a bad day overall, especially for those of us with thinning hair or bald spots. Luckily, when it comes to hair loss, many treatments exist that will help preserve those beautiful tresses. There are several factors that can lead to hair loss. Stress, pregnancy, an overactive thyroid gland, lack of protein, sudden weight loss, hormonal changes, and certain medications can all cause hair loss. Fortunately, these effects are usually temporary. What can we do about permanent hair loss? Men may begin to notice bald spots or receding hairlines as early as their late teens or early 20s, with two thirds of men experiencing what is referred to as male pattern baldness by age 60. Hair loss in women usually manifests itself as thinning hair or a widening part, typically at age 40 and over. One in five women will be affected by female pattern hair loss, or androgenic alopecia, but options are available to help slow
down the process. One of those options is medication. Propecia for men can slow down hair loss, and some may even experience new growth. It’s typically administered in pill form. For women, hormone replacement therapy may decrease or even stop hair loss. If an autoimmune disorder is suspected, a corticosteroid may be prescribed to stop the inflammation responsible for the problem. Platelet-rich plasma therapy (known as PRP), a minimally invasive treatment that has been around for the last decade or so, has demonstrated favorable results in many patients. PRP therapy is a process whereby blood is drawn from the patient and placed into a centrifuge that isolates the platelets. Following this separation, a physician injects the platelets into areas of the scalp where hair loss has occurred to stimulate new growth. The platelets stimulate collagen production and prolong the hair follicle’s growth cycle. ›››

Each treatment takes less than 30 minutes, and side effects are minimal— typically, just a slight sense of pressure at the injection site. The treatments are usually administered monthly for the first three to four months, and then every three to six months after that. Results may be noticeable in as little as two months. Doctors have reported that a majority of their patients experience hair regrowth of 30–40 percent. This procedure is approved for both men and women. Low-level laser therapy has also shown promise in combating hair loss. Laser treatments increase circulation and stimulate hair follicles, promoting growth. A bonus is that there are virtually no side effects. It may also improve the strength and thickness of existing hair. Outcomes vary, but many patients experience promising results. Surgical options are also available to combat hair loss. Hair transplant surgery has been around since the 1950s, but techniques and technology have greatly improved over the years. Gone are the days of hair plugs that looked like tiny bushes sprouting out all over your head! Two widely-used hair transplant methods are follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE). FUT involves removing a long, thin strip of hair from the back or side of the scalp. The wound is then closed, and individual follicles are removed from the strip and reinserted into balding areas. The FUE procedure harvests hair follicles over a larger area of the donor region, so wound closure is not required. The reinsertion process is similar in both procedures. The physician numbs the area and creates tiny slits using a scalpel or needle. A graft is placed in each opening. The procedure can take up to 10 hours. The area may be bandaged for a couple of days. The transplanted hair may fall out in two to three weeks, but don’t be alarmed! New growth appears in a few months. Touchups and multiple sessions may be needed. It may take up to two years for full results to be visible, but most patients are pleased with the results. Sometimes, more than one treatment is utilized to help patients restore their crowning glory. Hair loss can feel defeating, but selecting a treatment doesn’t have to be a hair-raising experience. Consult a dermatologist or a hair transplant specialist to discuss which option will work best for you. Sources for this article included: plasticsurgery. org, aad.org, health.com, and webmd.com. WE

Life at a Crossroads What Direction Will You Take? “We have to get used to the idea that at the most important crossroads in our life, there are no signs.” —Ernest Hemingway At various points in our lives, we come to a crossroads and don’t know which way to go. When this happens to you, you may feel like you’re the first and only person who has ever been in this situation. There is a path in front of you that may seem clear, easy, and safe. However, when you look around, you see other options. A part of you may feel that you need something new, something more, something different. You can experience these moments in any area of your life and at any time. In fact, most of us will encounter this many, many times. “There comes a time when you have to choose between turning the page and closing the book.” —Josh Jameson As we grow and change, we will undoubtedly feel that the status quo is not quite good enough for us anymore. We become tired or frustrated with our current career, relationships, living situations, everything. While these moments can be scary, even terrifying, they can actually be very important for personal growth. The best thing to do is to stop listening to what everyone else says

you should do. Instead, take some time to find a quiet place. Find your truth, your heart’s desire, and listen to that. “I find that there are many gifts in this space of quiet pausing between who I was and who I will become.” —Joanne Fedler The choices you make can lead to your next great adventure. These choices, these opportunities, are the best way to discover your true potential, perhaps even your true life purpose. If you’re scared, take small steps. Even if you make what turns out to be a bad choice, you still have the opportunity to learn from it and make a different decision in the future. The most important thing is not to let yourself be held back by what might feel like insurmountable obstacles. There are always going to be things in your way. You just need to make a decision that is aligned with your true self and go for it. Change can be scary, but it can lead to incredible things. “Consult not your fears but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but with what it is still possible for you to do.” —Pope John XXIII

Sportsmanship at Kids’ Sporting Events What Do They Learn From Watching You?
I wrote my first Kids Comments column for Women’s Edition nearly 20 years ago. While reading over some of those early columns, I found a recurring theme: Parents, YOU are the models for your children’s behavior. I spent 20 years volunteering with youth sports. In that time, I moved from working with local teams and leagues to directing a district comprising a third of our state. I had the opportunity to work with some talented and well-behaved kids, eager-to-help parents, and a bevy of volunteers. Most of those interactions were positive. Those are the ones I remember. Not long ago, I attended a youth sports game for the first time in years. Following an experience at that event, I’ve decided it’s time to reiterate my statement: Children learn from the example that adults set. The game was proceeding nicely, even with young and easily distracted kids. Most of the fans on both sides were positive and supportive. Comments like “Good job!” and “Nice try!” were heard from both sidelines. Then, the trouble started. A parent overheard a coach from the opposing team tell one of his players to be more aggressive. That parent berated the coach and then hollered at his own kid to do the same thing. Those adults (and I use the word loosely) started yelling at each other, with name-calling and four-letter words not usually heard in mixed company.
By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS
Many of the remaining parents from both teams seemed embarrassed. Someone went to find an official who might intervene. Some tried to shush the argument. Still others joined in the yelling, screaming, and general mayhem. The poor kids stood by, looking confused and asking each other what they should do. Other onlookers and coaches urged the players to continue the game. Eventually, the original offenders were convinced to return to their sidelines and encouraged to be quiet. The game continued. So did the feeling of unrest and discomfort. Fortunately, the whole fiasco remained verbal and didn’t end up in fisticuffs. I hope someone talked to those involved and explained why what they did was wrong. In fact, I hope that was pointed out to all the teams—and fans—involved in the league, no matter what their age. Fans are expected to root their teams onward. Kids are expected to play aggressively, but there should be no intent of hurting another player. The language used was offensive to me and, I hope, to other adults at the game. We need to teach these kids to be good sports…graceful winners and good losers…respectful of their opponents. The best way to get this across is to set the example you want the kids to follow. What example do YOU set? Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Shed New Light on Your Space The Importance of a Window Treatment By Robyn V. Powell
Window treatments add style and sophistication to your home or office, but their importance goes far beyond their aesthetic appeal. Today’s innovative window coverings combine fashion and cutting-edge technology. When it comes to form and function, the future is here! Whether your highest priority is style, privacy, energy efficiency, or light control, there’s a nearly unlimited selection of blinds, shades, and draperies to suit every style and purpose. Take inspiration from exciting and transformative trends to create a wellplanned solution and a fresh look for your home or business. When determining the ideal window treatment for a room, there are several factors to consider. While light control, privacy, aesthetics, and functionality all factor in, it’s important to start by considering the room’s core function. In a nursery, for example, you may want blackout shades to help encourage daytime napping. If reducing energy costs is a priority, consider solar cellular “honeycomb” shades made of pleated chambers that trap air and provide insulation. They can save you up to 20 percent on your energy bill. The secret to a well-dressed window is to find the right balance between form and function, using color and texture to pull the room together. The heavy, over-the-top treatments of the past are being replaced by clean lines and modern design schemes as more homeowners adopt the “less is more” approach to home decorating. Streamlined styles of shades and blinds that neatly roll out of sight to
maximize views and incoming light are popular choices. Choose from multiple styles designed to block light and heat transfer in your home. Fabric shades are leading the trend these days, and for good reason. With so many colors and textures to draw upon, fabric shades offer the best of both worlds when it comes to style and functionality. Roman or balloon shades combine the softness of drapery with the functionality of shades. The trend toward more color and pattern allows for big impact without overwhelming the room. Shades can be tailored to specific designs and custom-fitted for windows of any size or shape. Soft window coverings made from natural materials like bamboo, linen, and woven wood add a beautiful aesthetic to your windows, while textiles with flecks, texture, and hefty weaves make for a rich visual and tactile experience. Matte finishes and earthy hues that won’t compete with other furnishings lend an understated elegance to blinds and shutters. ›››

Draperies, a more traditional window treatment option, offer a great opportunity to add height, color, texture, and pattern to a room. Modern looks include placing rods through metal grommets that are seamlessly integrated within the fabric as well as mounting curtain rods as close as possible to the ceiling to add instant height to a room. As the trend toward smart home integration continues, homeowners are upgrading their window treatments to ones with motorized features. Automating your window treatments provides convenience and a sleek cordless appearance at the windows. Programing your shades to close at certain times or instructing them to open to the desired position during the day can now be achieved through voice activation or at the touch of a button on a phone, computer, or remote control. A space that ushers in lots of natural light through windows creates a wonderful aesthetic, but heat transfer can be an issue, especially in southern locales. Blocking the sun before it enters your home is the most effective way to reduce heat gain. Exterior shades that roll down when you need them are the perfect solution for extreme sun exposure. They block up to 97 percent of heat and harmful UV rays, protecting your furnishings and flooring and lowering air conditioning energy costs. Solid wood interior shutters decrease both heat loss and summer heat gain by providing an insulating air space between the shutter and the window. Properly installed window treatments begin with proper window measurement. Even small gaps can impair function, reduce energy efficiency, and leave you unhappy with the appearance. Choosing custom treatments ensures proper measurements and provides professional assistance in selecting the best product and design for your space. Hiring professional installers will ensure that your shades and draperies hang beautifully, break properly when opening and closing, and do not damage the woodwork. Check that installation warranties protect against errors in measurements and installation services with a guarantee to send the professional back, as needed, free of charge. If you’ve been considering updating your window coverings, now is a great time to do it. New window treatments offer unlimited possibilities in quality, durability, and beauty, making them an excellent investment. The Cizek Group Omaha’s Premier Real Estate Group By Robyn V. Powell
For decades, home ownership has stood as the cornerstone of the American dream. Home is the place we raise our families, relax and restore ourselves, and build financial wealth, so it’s no surprise that buying a new home is one of life’s most exciting milestones. It’s also the largest investment most of us will ever make, and real estate transactions can be tricky. There’s simply no substitute for having an experienced and knowledgeable realtor to help you navigate the process. Deb Cizek, owner of The Cizek Group, adopts the philosophy that real estate is a business and that clients are a priority. As Omaha’s top producer in volume since 1998, The Cizek Group is part of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Ambassador Real Estate, the most productive brick and mortar real estate brokerage company in Omaha, and the country. Deb began her career as a Gifted Ed teacher. “I loved teaching, but with two young children at home, I wanted a better work/ life balance,” says Deb. “After seven years, I quit working full time and stayed home…but that wasn’t right for me, either.” In her spare time, Deb began helping her friends find homes. She discovered how much she enjoyed it and decided to launch a new career. “I got my real estate license thinking it was going to be just a part-time job,” says Deb. “My first employer warned me, ‘If this gets in your blood, it will never be just a part-time job.’ She was right!” Deb loves the work/life balance she maintains as a realtor. “The hours can be long, but the beauty of it is you can create your own schedule. Many people make buying decisions at night or on the weekends. It’s the nature of the business. It’s not 9 to 5.” Real estate has been a natural fit for Deb. “I loved teaching, and I think the businesses relate,” she says. “People expect me to be knowledgeable, and I believe communication with clients is essential. People are entrusting us with their largest investment.” As the leader of The Cizek Group, Deb also uses her management skills to keep her team going strong. “My job is to be a team leader—to make sure that everyone is excited and stays motivated. I pretty quickly realized you can’t do it all,” she explains. “You can’t be good at sales, paperwork, negotiating home inspections, and making sure customer service is a priority.” Deb has built a topnotch team composed of people with complementary strengths, most of whom have been with her for 20–25 years. “Having the right person in the right position is

the key to a great team,” says Deb. “If people are happy doing something, they will thrive. In a way, we are very much like a family.” The Cizek Group brings a unique blend of experience, knowledge, and innovative marketing to your real estate needs. Each staff member is a licensed realtor, so there’s always someone qualified and available to answer your questions. “We meet weekly as a team and group, and then touch base with every client on Monday to check in and provide an update on the status of their home. If they want additional feedback, we’re here for them,” says Deb. Having a home primed the day it hits the market is smart. “We advise people on what the most important things are to prepare your home for sale because the longer a home is on the market, the less money you’re likely to get. We offer staging services, but, ultimately, that’s the seller’s decision.” The Cizek Group provides accurate home value assessments, proactive marketing, and several choices of title coordinators, home inspectors, and bankers for clients to work with. “It’s been a huge advantage to be part of the nationally recognized Berkshire Hathaway Home Services brand,” notes Deb. “It’s a worldwide economy, so national exposure is important.” Like many industries, real estate is always changing. “I’m amazed at how quickly things change,” says Deb. “It’s a constant evolution! You’ve got to have your hand on the pulse of what’s happening to stay on top of the market. At the same time, we never lose sight of our team motto: ‘Always do the right thing.’ When a business is built on referrals like ours is, your reputation is all you have. It’s about going back to basics and making customer service a priority. Even after all this time in business, I still stop and think, ‘How would I like to be treated?’” Whether you’re in the market for a bigger home, a smaller home, or a custom home, The Cizek Group will guide you through the process from start to finish. Water at Home Is Your Water System Doing Its Job?
By Anne Yankus
As you likely know, the human body is made up of more than 50 percent water. Through everyday sweating, using the restroom, and even breathing, we’re constantly losing water. The most important and efficient way to replenish this natural loss is to drink—you guessed it—water. When it comes to home maintenance and renovation, there are a lot of things we think we can’t live without, but let’s focus our attention on a real must-have: a safe and efficient water system. When you boil it down, there are two main types of systems for accessing drinking water inside the home: a point-of-use (POU) system or a whole-house system. Point-of-use filtration systems filter your water immediately before you drink it. This type includes things like personal water bottles, pour-through pitchers, faucet-mounted water filters, and refrigerator filters. Whole-house systems, on the other hand, filter all the water that enters your house from the water supply and may include features like UV microbiological treatments, water softeners, and whole-house chlorine filters. If your water is fine and you just want to improve the taste, a point-of-use system will likely get the job done at a lower cost. If your water just looks and smells off no matter where you turn it on throughout the house, you may want to invest in a whole-house system.
Different whole-house systems can have multiple methods of filtration to choose from. The three most popular methods of filtration on the market today are reverse osmosis, UV sterilization, and activated charcoal or carbon filtration. Reverse osmosis is possibly the most effective type of water filtration. It forces the water through a multi-stage filtration process starting with a sediment pre-filter (to remove larger particles such as sand and silt), then a carbon filter (to remove organic contaminants), and, finally, a semi-permeable membrane (for chemical contaminants). Reverse osmosis systems are great for getting your water clean of debris and chemicals, but they fall short at removing microorganisms. That’s where the next type of water filtration comes in: ultraviolet light. UV sterilization is a relatively new process in the world of water filtration, but it’s very effective where reverse osmosis doesn’t get ›››

the job done. UV water purifiers can kill 99.9 percent of germs and microorganisms missed by your municipal chlorine treatment. While it’s extremely effective at killing germs, that’s pretty much all it does in terms of water filtration. UV sterilization should always be used in conjunction with another type of water filter. Activated charcoal or carbon filters are probably the most common drinking water filters. They work thanks to a special characteristic of charcoal: it has a craggy surface that many common organic impurities naturally bind to. Keep in mind, though, that regular charcoal in its natural state doesn’t have enough surface area to be an effective filter. That’s why you’ll need charcoal that’s been “activated” through an oxygen treatment during which it gains millions of tiny pores that the contaminants will get stuck in. While carbon filters aren’t as effective as reverse osmosis filters, they’ll work just fine if your primary concern is improving the taste of your household drinking water. While you’re looking at whole-house systems, you’re inevitably going to come across water softener systems. Water softeners treat hard water, which contains minerals like calcium and magnesium. In large quantities, exposure to hard water can cause health issues and problems with buildup on your appliances, on your dishes and glassware, and in your pipes. If you’re running into any of these problems on a consistent basis, you may want to consider installing a water softener. There are two types of water softeners: salt-based and salt-free. Salt-based systems are most effective at completely removing minerals from all your household water but are generally more expensive. Salt-free models are cheaper alternatives that neutralize the contaminants of hard water without the use of chemicals; they are generally not as effective. With so many things to consider, you may be tempted to just buy bottled water all the time instead. Before deciding to use bottled water as a regular source of drinking water, you’ll definitely want to weigh out the long-term cost and have a good recycling plan in place. Whatever filtration method and system you choose, ensuring that your water is clean and healthy is definitely a good investment for your home and your family. Alternative Treatment Options Thinking Outside the Box (or Inside the Pod)
By Connie Keck
To maintain good health, it’s incredibly valuable to have a good relationship with your medical doctor. Many diseases and conditions respond favorably to longstanding, clinically proven medical treatments and surgical procedures, and that’s often the best way to go. Sometimes, however, you may find yourself at loose ends trying to decide what kind of treatment to pursue for your current health concerns. If medical and pharmaceutical treatments are not providing the results you seek, you might want to consider some alternative and holistic options that may be new to you. Cryotherapy is a hyper-cooling process that drastically lowers a person’s skin temperature. In cryotherapy, a part of the body or the entire body is exposed to extremely cold temperatures for a short period of time (around three minutes) in order to encourage healing and decrease pain. Most cryosaunas use liquid nitrogen to cool the skin, though some use refrigerated air. Reaching sub-zero temperatures, cryotherapy engages the body’s survival response to the cold, resulting in a natural avenue through which many health benefits are achieved. A surge in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant levels can provide relief from rheumatic disorders and chronic pain, including fibromyalgia, while a potent increase in norepinephrine and dopamine offers an incredible boost to the psyche. In addition, systemic inflammatory reduction helps to ward off the long list of ailments caused by inflammation. Other benefits

include restless leg syndrome relief, improved exercise and injury recovery, increased calorie burn, reduction of chronic pain and fatigue, improved sleep patterns, and immune system boost. Cryotherapy can also be used to treat conditions that involve irritation of an isolated nerve. While cryotherapy can effectively reduce unwanted nerve irritation, it can sometimes leave the surrounding tissue affected by sensations such as numbness, tingling, redness, and irritation of the skin. These effects are usually temporary. Salt therapy, also known as halotherapy, is a modern variation of the eastern European tradition of spending time in salt caves. Salt therapy is as simple as sitting in a special room that recreates the conditions of a salt cave. Salt rooms provide an allergen-free and pathogen-free environment. While you breathe in the salty air of the therapy room, salt molecules enter the moist airways of your lungs and break down, releasing negative ions. Benefits cited include relief from respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, and allergies. Other benefits may include the easing

of smoking-related symptoms such as a cough, shortness of breath, and wheezing, and relief from skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and acne. Salt therapy has been cited as a popular treatment for children with asthma because it is a natural treatment, but it doesn’t need to be the only treatment in play. It is actually a complementary therapy that is meant to work in concert with any medication the asthma patient is already taking. Let your doctor know if you want to try this approach. Don’t stop taking any medications without discussing it with your physician first. Salt therapy has been used, formally and informally, for many years, and it is probably safe for most everyone; however, little research has been performed on the subject. Because there is not yet a standard protocol for salt therapy, the amount of salt administered can vary from clinic to clinic. Floating is a way to pause the hectic, overwhelming world and enter a state of deep mental and physical relaxation. During a float, you step into a private spa called a float tank or pod and lie back in water supersaturated with Epsom salts. Your increased buoyancy in the heavily salted water allows you to float effortlessly. The water is kept at a constant temperature of approximately 95 degrees. Based on your preference, the pod can be dark or light, silent or with music piped in. Swimsuits may be optional; be sure to ask. After your session, you will emerge from the float with your mind refreshed, completely relaxed, with a peaceful mind and a sense of calm. A float is a glorious place to fully rest. It is an environment that allows our bodies and our minds to turn away from everything around us and instead turn our focus internally. There is no magic in the float tank—the magic is you. Floating is an effective and effortless way to take a complete break from the physical and mental stressors in your life. When you’re considering alternative health treatments or remedies, don’t keep your physician in the dark! Your physician can make sure that you don’t have any health issues or medications that would make a particular alternative treatment unsafe for you. After you’ve spoken to your doctor, take a closer look at innovative alternatives like cryotherapy, salt therapy, and floating. They might be just what you need! An Inside Look
Local Shop, Haute Couture Original Designs at Suburban Bridal By Loretta McCollum
In May, the world watched Prince Harry wed his princess, American actress Meghan Markle. All eyes were on the beautiful bride as she made her way down the aisle, looking absolutely stunning in her gorgeous gown. It was just what every bride wants—to feel like a princess, walking down the aisle in her own dream gown. Choosing a wedding gown is a personal experience to be handled with care. Just ask Mary Lou Scherer, owner and manager of Suburban Bridal. She stresses the importance of getting to know each bride. “If you really care about the bride, she can sense it,” says Mary Lou. She loves helping brides find the perfect dress. By appointment or walk-in, every bride entering Suburban Bridal receives top-notch, personalized service. Mary Lou and her staff work closely with each bride, helping her select the right gown to highlight her assets and flatter her body type. It’s important to keep an open mind! According to Mary Lou, some brides end up with dresses “they never thought they would like.” Since 1967, Suburban Bridal has featured unique, local designs, produced with the highest quality fabric and construction for the price. Nearly 80 percent of the dresses in the shop were designed by Mary Lou herself. Her talent, experience, and dedication to quality are among the things that set Suburban Bridal apart. The shop also features an extensive collection of accessories for brides and social occasion gowns. Mary Lou has fitted multiple generations of brides who return with their daughters for the impeccable service, expertise, and reliability. Gowns are ordered six to eight months out, and the shop prides itself on the fact that no gown has ever missed a wedding. (Mary Lou’s own wedding gown almost didn’t arrive in time, so she makes every effort to ensure that no bride has to cope with that extra stress.) Mary Lou even has multiple generations of employees. Maryam Sahak has been a bridal consultant and store photographer for 10 years. Maryam’s mother is a seamstress at the shop, and two of Maryam’s older sisters preceded her. Maryam says that she loves working with the staff at Suburban Bridal and with the brides themselves. “It’s the happiest day of the bride’s life, so it just feels good, and everyone here is great.” Mary Lou has been designing dresses since she was three. She’s a former model who began her career at age 14, traveled to California for modeling assignments (chaperoned, of course). She met multiple celebrities during that part of her career, but she is truly a lady: If you ask her to elaborate, she politely declines to discuss details. A random encounter with a bridal promoter as a young woman led to a career as a freelance bridal designer, and she has been designing wedding gowns ever since.

One collection in the shop has a special significance for Mary Lou. She developed the Lisa Lou collection to honor her daughter Lisa, whom Mary Lou lost to colon cancer in 2014. Lisa managed the store for many years and focused on helping Mary Lou Scherer, owner, brides find the best dress for the best price. manager, and designer Gowns in the Lisa Lou collection are created from the finest fabric and lace, with hand-beading and haute couture construction. Mary Lou explains that a large percentage of a wedding gown’s cost comes from advertising and distribution. With the Lisa Lou collection, and other lines in the shop, many of those costs are eliminated, making the dresses more affordable. Cost savings are between 25 and 75 percent. Mary Lou’s business and life philosophies are parallel. She says it’s important to “treat others like you want to be treated. You find true happiness by being kind to others.” She makes every bride think about the groom and imagine his reaction when he first sees her in the dress. While she’s helping each bride choose a dress, she also offers a little advice about the marriage: “Think about one time when he really irritated you, and just plain get over it!” When asked about the toughest challenges she encounters, her immediate response is, “helping with heartache.” She recounts the story of a bride and groom who tragically lost their lives shortly before their wedding. The distraught mother of the bride called the shop multiple times, asking Mary Lou if her daughter’s dress would be ready on time. Mary Lou became a counselor of sorts, staying in contact with the woman for almost two years, going above and beyond the definition of customer service. Mary Lou has no plans to retire from designing, and Suburban Bridal will continue far into the future. Suburban Bridal is located at 4614 South 132nd Street, in Omaha. The Amazing American Bond Market It’s Not What You Think By George Morgan
The total value of the American bond market is more than 40 trillion dollars, making it the largest financial market on the planet. The bond market is about 40 percent larger than our stock market. Bonds included on the market are issued by various entities, including the United States Treasury, publicly traded corporations, states, cities, and smaller municipal entities such as schools and hospitals. The U.S. Treasury is by far the largest issuer of American bonds and represents almost half the total market. These bonds are the national debt. Conventional wisdom is that the owners of bonds buy them, collect the interest payments, and then hold them until they mature. This is a far cry from reality. Every day, the total value of bonds bought and sold is about four times larger than the dollar volume of the stock market. Corporations trade bonds to maintain their cash reserves and to provide investment returns on their money. More than 90 percent of the bonds are held by institutions; only an extremely small number of individuals own bonds directly. Americans who own a high dollar amount of bonds generally own them through pensions and mutual funds. A little background: A bond is a loan made by the buyer to the issuer. In return for the loan, the issuer agrees to (1) pay a stated amount to the owner every quarter and (2) return the principal to the current owner of the bond when the bond reaches the maturity date. There are four elements associated with every bond: the name
of the issuer, a maturity date, a coupon rate, and the face value. These elements do not change over time. The coupon rate is the fixed interest payment that the issuer pays on a bond, expressed as a percentage of the face value of the bond. This rate is determined by the issuer’s credit-worthiness, among other factors—the better the issuer’s credit rating, the lower the rate. Bonds issued by the U.S. Treasury pay the lowest amount because the interest payment and principal are backed by the full faith and credit of the United States government. States such as California and Illinois, which are experiencing fiscal problems, must pay a significantly higher rate to borrow money. The rates paid by American corporations run the gamut from very low to very high. There are several companies who rate bonds so that potential buyers can evaluate the level of risk that they are willing to accept. As with many types of loans, there exists a general level of

interest rates for bonds, but the actual rate paid varies from bond to bond. As stated earlier, one element considered in establishing an interest rate is the financial quality of the bond issuer. The better the issuer’s finances, the lower the rate the issuer will have to pay to borrow money. The length of time to maturity is the other major factor in interest rates. The farther away the maturity date is, the higher the interest rate is likely to be. This is because the future is easier to predict in the short term. The farther out you go in time, the less certainty you have about future conditions, which means the buyer is taking on more risk. The conventional wisdom is that bonds are very safe investments. To some extent, this is true. When interest rates are falling, the value of a bond increases; when interest rates rise, the value of a bond decreases. This is because the value of a bond is a function of the alternative rates. For example, if you own a bond with an eight percent coupon rate, and the rate on a new bond of similar quality and maturity is five percent, you should be able to sell your bond at more than face value. On the other hand, if interest rates go up, buyers could purchase a new bond and get a higher rate. Thus, selling your bond would mean getting less than face value. Interest rates peaked in 1985 and steadily declined until 2017. This meant that the principal value of bonds either remained steady or increased. That is about to change. The Federal Reserve has begun a program to slowly increase interest rates. This means that the principal value of bonds will begin to decrease in value. Over the past decade, the return on bonds has been at historic lows, yet the public interest in bonds remains high. Over the course of the next few years, we should see a steady rise in the rates paid for newly issued bonds. If you own bonds through a mutual fund, you can rest assured that bonds are a reasonable investment for the general population, and their attractiveness should only get better. As with all mutual fund investments, it’s important to keep an eye on what you’re paying in fees. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. Recognizing Sleep Apnea Are You Getting a Good Night’s Breath?
By Linda Barnes
Recognizing and treating sleep apnea can significantly improve your quality of life. In fact, it may even save your life, since sleep apnea is strongly associated with dangerous medical conditions like high blood pressure, heart arrhythmia, and stroke. An estimated one in five adults has sleep apnea, a condition in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Common symptoms of sleep apnea include a pause in your breathing (observed by another person), waking up gasping for breath, waking with dry mouth and throat, morning headache, frequent waking in the night, loud snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, attention problems, or irritability. Men are more prone to sleep apnea, but a significant number of women experience symptoms, especially after menopause. The signs tend to be different for women—they are more likely to have headaches, fatigue, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and sleep disruption. The causes of the two main types of sleep apnea are quite different. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs when your airway is blocked or narrowed. Central sleep apnea (CSA) happens when your brain does not send the signal to breathe. The obstructive variety is far more common than central, though some people exhibit both types of sleep apnea. The good news is that sleep apnea can be successfully treated, regardless of the root cause. Factors contributing to OSA might include chronic nasal

congestion, large tonsils or adenoids, or muscles in the throat that relax and allow tissues to collapse, which narrows or blocks the airway. Being overweight can contribute to sleep apnea when fat deposits put excess pressure on the upper airways. Smoking, alcohol, and some medications can also increase a person’s risk of OSA. In the less common CSA, breathing stops not because of obstruction but because the brain doesn’t send the proper signal to the muscles involved in breathing. CSA may be attributed to aging, neurological disease, heart issues, opioid pain meds, or stroke. Snoring is less common in CSA. A common diagnostic tool for sleep apnea has been the overnight sleep study in a hospital or clinic setting. (Now, there is also a simpler test that some people can do at home—ask your doctor.) In the clinic or hospital sleep study, machines monitor heart rate, breathing, brain activity, and oxygen levels in the blood. In the sleep lab, a technician
www.womensedition.com
applies sensors or electrodes that monitor sleep stages and cycles of REM and nonREM sleep. Vital signs will be recorded while you sleep. Data will then be evaluated by a physician, who will look for disruptions in such indicators as oxygen levels and breathing and heart rates. Once a diagnosis is made, treatment options are considered. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines are often prescribed for sleep apnea. The machine delivers air pressure through a mask over the nose to help keep airways open during sleep. Other simpler devices may treat mild forms of OSA. Oral devices fitted by the dentist may help keep the airway open. Such appliances prevent airway obstruction by holding the tongue in place or by advancing the lower jaw forward. A dental specialist will determine the best option for each patient. Various surgical procedures, such as removal of excess tissue, jaw repositioning, or insertion of rods might be options, depending on the individual. With CSA, underlying causes such as heart or neuromuscular issues would be addressed by a cardiologist or neurologist. Lung disease may be treated by a pulmonologist. Supplemental oxygen or the newer airflow machine hybrids are sometimes prescribed. The seriousness of sleep apnea complications cannot be overstated. Untreated, it can cause high blood pressure, with resulting damage to the heart and kidneys. In some patients, sleep apnea is believed to contribute to heart attack, glaucoma, diabetes, and cognitive and behavioral disorders. Several friends of mine have been successfully treated for sleep apnea, and all are feeling rested and happier since being fitted with CPAP machines. The almost immediate improvement in quality of life is obvious, and a healthier and longer life is a probable long-term result. The best place to begin is with your family doctor or internal medicine physician. Referrals might be made to a specialist in sleep medicine, pulmonology, neurology, or dentistry. Don’t worry about the strangeness of a sleep study—they’re noninvasive, and you can wear your own pajamas! For mild cases, lifestyle changes might be sufficient or might be combined with other therapies. Eating healthy foods, getting regular exercise, losing excess weight, and quitting smoking can have a positive impact (on both sleep apnea and your general health). Short-Stay Rehabilitation
Short-Term Care for Long-Term Recovery By Leslie Byrne
When you’re in the hospital, your highest priority is generally going home and getting back to your normal, everyday routine. That’s always understandable but not always possible. Many patients are not physically ready to get right back to their normal lives after a hospital stay, especially if they don’t have fulltime caretakers at home who have the training and equipment to help with the recovery. A short-stay rehabilitation facility with skilled staff can create a smooth transition from hospital to home. If a patient needs professional help such as physical therapy, medication management, and skilled nursing care, along with time to recuperate without the stress of running a household, a short-stay rehabilitation facility is a great option. Many people are unfamiliar with short-stay rehabilitation, but it’s a growing trend as the population ages and more doctors are recommending that patients stop over in a short-stay center after leaving the hospital. Patients who need short-stay rehabilitation commonly include those who are recovering from a stroke, a joint replacement procedure, a major surgery, or any other issue that requires medical monitoring or intensive physical therapy. Most stays are shorter than 30 days. Depending on their medical needs, some patients stay as long as 100 days. A short-stay rehabilitation facility, commonly known as
short-term rehab, is staffed 24/7 with skilled nursing caregivers along with physical therapy staff. Unlike a hospital, a short-stay facility offers more of a home-like environment. Patients wear their own clothing and can bring personal items from home, including books, computers, and other small items. Most facilities offer both shared and private rooms; the type of room may be decided by the patient’s insurance coverage or the patient’s personal preference. Some people heal faster when they are around other people, while others prefer more privacy and quiet to focus on their recovery. Also, unlike a hospital, the whole focus of a short-stay facility is on getting patients back to their normal daily routines as quickly as possible. This may require a patient to dedicate most of the day to working with doctors, nurses, social workers, therapists, and other medical personnel. The sooner you regain your independence, the sooner you can return to your normal routine at home. In the best case scenario, your medical procedure is scheduled, and you know in advance that you will need to spend some time recovering in short-term rehab. This gives you the opportunity to

check out some facilities and decide which one will be best for you, and it makes the transition from hospital to rehab much smoother. (Of course, it’s not always possible to know ahead of time that you’ll need rehab services; in these cases, your surgeons or doctors can likely recommend reputable facilities that they’ve worked with in the past.) If you can, it’s best to visit a few different facilities and ask some questions on each visit. To start, ask what services each facility offers and what kind of room you will have (private or shared). Learn what type of therapy you will need and whether you will need any medication to get you closer to returning home. Facilities usually have a 24-hour kitchen, along with laundry and housekeeping services. Other services to inquire about are medication management, skilled nursing care, nutrition education, and transportation to follow-up appointments with your physician. If you need Medicare to cover the cost of short-term rehab, it’s important that you find out which facilities are Medicarecertified and whether there is a minimum or maximum number of days you need to stay for Medicare coverage to apply. Generally, Medicare pays for up to 100 days for rehabilitation services. If you’re expected to need more than 100 days to recover, you may need to consider longterm rehabilitation options. Some short-stay facilities have social workers on staff. These people are generally good resources for information regarding Medicare coverage and requirements or other financial issues. Keep in mind that Medicare is not the only form of coverage that a short-stay care facility accepts— they usually also accept private insurance and, of course, self-pay. Again, ask the management of the facility or social worker about your financial options. It’s important to have a full understanding of the financial requirements before you sign any agreements. If you or a loved one is facing an upcoming medical procedure that will require extra time to recuperate, consider a short-stay rehabilitation facility and discuss the possibility with your doctor. Although nothing will stop you from looking forward to getting home as soon as you can, the care and expertise provided by a short-stay rehabilitation center will surely get you back to your daily routine faster. Car Maintenance Basics What to Watch for and When to Replace By Brennan Hallock
We’ve all heard stories about people not maintaining their vehicles and, eventually, paying dearly for it. Even if you know you need to pay attention to regular maintenance, it can feel overwhelming when you try to remember all the different parts in your vehicle that could go wrong. Thankfully, we can narrow it down to the issues that need the most regular attention. Let’s start with motor oil, which literally keeps your engine turning. Without oil, the engine would seize, and you would no longer be driving. Oil picks up particles as it is pumped through the engine. These particles can make your engine function less efficiently and can eventually cause permanent damage. You should check your oil once a month to make sure that there’s enough oil in the engine and that it isn’t too old (it generally starts as an amber color and gets darker as it ages). It’s also imperative to have your oil changed at least every 3,000–5,000 miles or every three months. Many newer vehicles have sensors that remind you of service. Certain automakers suggest oil-change intervals at 7,500 or even 10,000 miles or at six or 12 months. It’s best to refer to the owner’s manual for your specific vehicle. When you have your oil changed, you will have a few different options. Synthetic motor oil is refined to eliminate more impurities than regular oil does, providing more protection for

your vehicle’s engine and keeping your engine cleaner. It tends to outperform regular motor oil but is also more expensive. If your car has more than 75,000 miles on it, you might consider highmileage motor oil. It’s specially designed with additives to help prevent burn-off and leaks, both of which are common in older engines. You should also have your oil filter changed when you change your oil. Motor oil isn’t the only fluid you should be checking. Coolant, brake fluid, and power steering fluids should all be checked, too. (If you don’t know how to check these yourself, ask your mechanic.) Coolant, also known as antifreeze or radiator fluid, is pumped through the engine to keep it at a stable temperature. An engine without coolant would quickly reach dangerous temperatures and cause mechanical breakdown. Have your coolant checked at least twice a year.

Brakes function through a process that converts the pressure you place on the brake pedal into liquid pressure that then compresses your vehicle’s brake calipers. If the fluid in your brake lines is low, this process doesn’t work as well. Have your brake fluid checked a few times per year. If your vehicle has hydraulic power steering, you will need to maintain power steering fluid. Power steering uses fluid pressure to turn your car’s wheels when you turn the steering wheel. Check it a couple of times per year to make sure your vehicle doesn’t develop a leak. Power steering fluid should be replaced about every four years (or 50,000 miles). We all know that flat tires need attention, but all tires need to be periodically replaced, even if you haven’t had a blow-out. Tires wear out as you drive, and worn tires make driving more difficult and dangerous. On snow or ice, old tires are more likely to get stuck, slide, spin out, or impair steering control. In rainy conditions, they increase the likelihood of hydroplaning. Your vehicle’s owner’s manual will have specific recommendations for when to replace tires, but an average life span is about 25,000–50,000 miles. This doesn’t mean you should ignore your tires in the meantime! Tires should be rotated every six months (or 6,000–8,000) miles to ensure they wear evenly.
There are a number of different belts on your vehicle— serpentine belts, V-belts, timing belts, and more—and they are critical to the engine’s operation. Have your belts inspected at least once per year, or as your owner’s manual instructs. Most warranties cover the replacement of belts, so you should also check with your warranty if you are in need of a new belt. It’s not hard to tell when your wiper blades need replacement—you won’t be able to see! If you notice squeaking, skipping, or streaking, it’s time to get new blades. Even if they look okay, it’s wise to replace them a couple of times a year to make sure you don’t get caught in a storm with malfunctioning blades. It’s easy enough to check your own oil level at the gas pump, but most auto maintenance should be left to a professional. This is why it is so important to find a trustworthy mechanic. If you don’t already have one, check with family and friends for recommendations. Most importantly: Don’t wait until your car breaks down to find a mechanic! It takes time, and you’ll be without wheels while you look. Once you find a trusted mechanic, you’ll know where to go for all your vehicle’s needs. The Good Life
Banks and Credit Unions Differences and Benefits Holly Tierney-Bedord
Banking is a normal, necessary part of life, and we rely on banks and credit unions to make our lives easier and keep our money secure. Did you ever stop to wonder about the differences between these types of financial institutions and which one may be right for you and your money? Banks and credit unions protect our money from theft, loss, and fires. They allow us to link our money to debit cards so we can make purchases where cash is inconvenient, like when renting a car or booking a trip or a hotel. They allow us to borrow money to own things most of us couldn’t purchase outright, like homes and cars. Checking accounts allow us to easily pay our bills by sending a check through the mail or using an online bill-paying system. If you have a savings account (or an interest-bearing checking account), you can even collect interest on the money you already own. To make sure you’re getting the most out of your financial institution, it’s worth taking a look at the similarities and differences between banks and credit unions. Both are very stable and are insured to protect up to $250,000 of your money. Banks are insured by the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation), and most credit unions are insured by the NCUSIF (National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund). If federally insured, a credit union is just as safe as a bank. If a credit union is not federally insured, it is likely still very safe, but it’s not backed by the United States government. Credit unions and banks offer similar services, like savings and checking accounts, loans, and mortgages. They also generally offer online banking and bill paying—you may be able to monitor your accounts, transfer money, and pay bills from your home computer or phone. However, banks are for-profit institutions, while credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives. Credit unions have members instead of customers, and their members are also owners. Credit unions may have membership requirements, like residence in a particular geographic area or past attendance at a particular college. Whenever you use your debit card to make a purchase or withdraw funds from an ATM, you’re making an electronic banking transaction. When you initiate the transaction, the bank or credit union instantaneously approves or denies it by reviewing a variety of data. If approved, your financial institution transfers your money where you need it to go. Because you’re able to communicate directly with secure servers and networks, this process is very safe. The process to secure a loan, from application to approval to receiving the funds, usually takes
60
July 2018
about seven days. When you get a loan, you start making payments shortly after you receive the funds. Refinancing a mortgage, which you may want to do if interest rates drop, takes longer. You should expect that process to take about 30–45 days for a conventional loan refinance. A line of credit differs from a traditional loan in that you begin by paying only interest and fees on the money you borrow. It comes with a set timeline of how long you can withdraw money; 10 years is typical. After that, you repay the full amount you owe. You may consider opening a line of credit if you have an unexpected financial emergency. Home equity lines of credit, often used for remodeling, are quite common. Lines of credit can be secured or unsecured. With a secured line of credit, you’re welcome to spend the money as you wish, but your collateral assets could be seized if you can’t pay off your balance when it’s due. An unsecured line of credit generally has a higher interest rate because it’s not backed by collateral; these are more difficult to get. Business lines of credit, often used for purchasing inventory and equipment, follow the same general rules as other lines of credit. When you apply for a loan or line of credit, lenders evaluate debt-to-income ratios, repayment history, credit scores, and other factors. Before applying for a loan or line of credit, review your credit report for errors and to make sure you’re up to date on all your payments. Gather your financial records, including documents showing your income and employer information, outgoing money, past tax returns, investments, and all bank statements. Your financial institution can likely give you a detailed list of all the documents you need to bring. To learn more about what’s right for you and your finances, consult with a financial expert at the bank or credit union of your choice. Great Escapes
Jackson Hole
Channeling Your Inner Cowgirl By Jackie Williams
This month, I’m focusing your attention on a wonderful small-town travel destination in the United States: Jackson Hole, Wyoming. In Jackson Hole, you can get out of the city and into the open air. You can experience the country, learn some history, and channel your inner cowgirl. It’s not just about the nearby top ski resort or the first American national park. Picture yourself in a gorgeous mountain town, nestled between the Tetons and the Gros Ventre mountain ranges, surrounded by beauty and wildlife. Jackson Hole really is a year-round adventure-lover’s destination. Jackson Hole was incorporated in 1914. The “Jackson” in Jackson Hole is for beaver trapper David Edward “Davey” Jackson. A “hole” is how mountain-dwelling locals would describe a high mountain valley. Jackson Hole refers to the entire valley and generally includes the towns of Jackson, Teton Village, Kelly, Wilson, Moran, Moose, and Hoback Junction, as well as Grand Teton National Park. Jackson is the largest town in Jackson Hole, with a population of just over 10,000. The soil is not ideal for planting, so settlers ranched instead. The tourism boom in the area came after the establishment of dude ranches. Speaking of dude ranches—if you haven’t tried one before, Jackson Hole is a great place to start. Consider Moose Head Ranch. It’s family-

owned and completely surrounded by the Tetons. At Moose Head Ranch, you will have to unplug from technology and instead immerse yourself in horseback riding, stargazing, fly-fishing, hiking, whitewater rafting, and bonding with your friends and family. Tough, huh? If you want a more upscale option, look into Turpin Meadow Ranch, a luxury dude ranch right on the Buffalo Fork River between the Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. It offers similar activities but with more upscale accommodations. If you’re uncomfortable being so untethered from technology, feel free to stay in a cute cabin in town where you’ll have modern amenities like television and internet. Cowboy Village Resort is only a short drive to the airport and national parks and is just six blocks from the Town Square, so it is quiet but close to everything. They have kitchenettes in every cabin and an indoor pool and hot tub. Make your way over to the Town Square for a little exploring, ›››

where you will be welcomed by the big archways made of shed elk antlers. You will love the really cool, quaint boutique shops and fine art galleries that line the streets. Where to start? If you want to look like a cowgirl and feel like a cowgirl, you have to dress like a cowgirl! Beaver Creek Hat and Leather has been around for decades, and they have a fantastic selection and free fittings. The Jackson Bootlegger has some amazing cowboy boot styles—leave yourself some time to decide! You can find your next getup at the Wyoming Outfitters. Top it all off with souvenir jewelry that will remind you of your trip, like a Teton stacking ring from Jackson Hole Jewelry Company. The galleries have some amazing local scenic shots and paintings, but the smaller sizes just don’t do them justice. If you buy a print, go big (they can always ship it home for you). Summertime in Jackson Hole means rodeos on Wednesday and Saturday evenings. You can’t come all the way to the country and not see one! After the rodeo, try some local game at The Gun Barrel. It used to be the Wyoming Wildlife Museum & Taxidermy, so there’s a lot of neat stuff to look at during your visit to the restaurant, not to mention the tasty menu offerings. If you would rather stick to beef, enjoy a mouthwatering steak dinner at the aptly named Local Restaurant & Bar. Continue your night with country swing dancing and country music at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar and Bar J Chuckwagon (make reservations in advance). They’re a hoot! Summer is a very popular time to visit Jackson Hole, but so are all of the other seasons. Whether you want to see the gorgeous fall foliage, play in the snow, view the most wildlife, or hit the rodeo, Jackson Hole is a wonderful destination to visit any time of the year. There are lots of events to come for, including biking and running events, rodeos, concerts, festivals, and fairs. The next time you need a little vacation inspiration, take a look at some of Ansel Adams’ iconic photos of landscapes of the Tetons and just think of all the fun you will have when you “Stay Wild” in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Enterprising Ideas
Aloha! From Blue Oceans Float Come as You Are; Leave Feeling Better By Marge Shoemaker
Imagine you’re walking onto a warm, sandy beach. You kick off your shoes and slowly wade into the water, gradually submerging yourself and assuming a floating position. That’s the feeling that Blue Oceans Float wants you to have as you enter their facility. You will find soft music, natural light, a sand-colored floor, seaside decoration on the walls, and a barefoot attendant at the desk. Jordan Concanon, the owner of Blue Oceans Float, started her business in Omaha in late 2017. Jordan spent her college years in Hawaii, studying physics and astronomy. She fell in love with the casual atmosphere and lifestyle, and she knew she didn’t want to spend her career locked in a cubicle in a stuffy office. “My dad told me how float therapy has helped many of his chiropractic patients,” Jordan recalls. “He encouraged me to research equipment and existing float businesses before going into business for myself.” Early research into how the brain would react when denied external stimulation was conducted by Dr. John Lilly, a neurophysiologist and psychoanalyst, in the 1950s. He postulated that a subject could attain inner peace and improved self-knowledge if free of the physical world. Subjects were placed in a tank of water in silent darkness. He called it Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy (REST). His experiments evolved into what is known today as flotation therapy. At Blue Oceans Float, clients float in a solution of water and Epsom salts in a roomy isolation pod. The water in the pod is 10 inches deep, is warmed to about 94 degrees, and holds over 800 pounds of dissolved magnesium sulfate (that’s the salt). The pod offers a unique environment designed to allow minimal sensory input. It soothes the nerves, enhances the mind, and relaxes the body. Everyone’s floating experience is a little different, and the staff at Blue Oceans Float wants you to have the experience you desire. “At Blue Oceans Float, we respect whatever personal reasons the client has for coming,” Jordan says. “We aim to provide the space and atmosphere for a successful experience.” When you arrive for your float, a float guide will lead you to your float room (each one is named after a different ocean), where you’ll find all the supplies you need: towels, slippers, shampoo, soap, and a shower. A bathroom is nearby. You can choose whether you want the pod closed or open, dark or dimly lit, and silent or with soft music. Your guide will explain the controls and then leave you to your hour-long floating experience. The staff will notify you through an intercom when your float time is nearing its end.

Attire during the float (bathing suit or not) is also determined by the floater’s preference. Not many first-time floaters wear Owner Jordan Concanon a bathing suit, Jordan notes. She recalls one floater who started out in a bathing suit and shed it halfway through the session. “It’s always up to the individual floater,” she says, “but we suggest that the benefits are greater in the nude.” Epsom salts have long been used to ease pain and inflammation. Floaters may experience any or several of the following benefits: migraine relief; reduced stress and anxiety; extraordinarily deep relaxation; improved athletic performance and recovery; enhanced mental clarity, focus, and creativity; relief of physical discomfort; decreased muscle tension; detoxification; and enhanced ability to heal. Floater Jenna reports she gets stressed out easily and has tried many remedies to no avail. “Floating has been great…an amazing way to escape your issues, even for an hour,” she writes. “Blue Oceans is my favorite place to escape reality. Nothing compares with the staff and atmosphere.” Floater Brian reports physical and emotional benefits. “Easing pressure on my joints relieves knee and back pain,” he writes. “I leave feeling relaxed and refreshed… sometimes for days. Time with my thoughts helps me view life problems from a different perspective and helps me discover solutions. My ability to concentrate has improved…I am a better person than I was before I started floating.” The sea turtle in the Blue Oceans Float logo is a nod to champion floaters—sea turtles are among the best floaters in the world. They glide effortlessly and gracefully through the water as they travel the oceans of the globe. When splayed out, the turtle’s body resembles a floating human, its shell represents the environment of the float tank, and the waves on its shell signify the healing powers floating though the mind, body, and soul. Despite what you may have seen in movies, floating is not a scary, science-fiction experience, Jordan notes. Her advice? Just try it! Blue Oceans Float is located at 1016 South 74th Plaza, in Omaha. Everything’s Coming Up Roses Don’t Let These Thorny Beauties Scare You Off
By Sharon Knierim
When novice gardeners begin their careers in the soil, roses are either the last specimen to be planted or the very first. Nearly everyone wants to raise roses successfully. There is status in being known as one who raises beautiful and healthy roses, but there shouldn’t be any shame in having rose bushes that are less than successful. Roses are not difficult to raise and enjoy if a gardener has prepared for the adventure. Knowledge is the key factor in raising these most beautiful of flowers. The best and most successful plan for raising roses is to learn as much as possible before planting begins. Cleanliness and regular care are absolutely essential. One of the most frequently asked questions regarding roses is how and when to provide the proper moisture. As in all gardening, there is no black-and-white answer to this query. The plant’s location and soil conditions will help determine the correct plan. Remember, not all soils are alike, and the ability of different soils to accept and percolate water varies widely. In sandy soil or well-drained locations, you should water deeply around the base of the bush once a week. Soil that is extra heavy or contains a lot of clay holds water better, so you should water the base just lightly, also once a week.
Roses can become incredibly thirsty and do require substantial amounts of water to thrive. When roses receive one inch of water weekly throughout the season, they are happiest. To provide this moisture, soak the soil thoroughly up to a depth of at least eight inches. With a hose, provide water in a very slow-moving stream around the base of the roses. The water will seep down near the roots, where it can be most beneficial. Do not provide a heavy stream—this will only cause water to run off and not penetrate the soil well enough to be beneficial. If another gardener suggests that you avoid spraying roses with a garden hose, be sure to listen. This experienced helper knows his or her stuff. Wet foliage (leaves and stems) encourages the spread of black spot disease. If you want to feed your roses, offer them some bananas. It may

sound crazy, but this truly works. Rotten bananas should be mashed (both the skin and fruit) and dug into the soil surrounding the bush base. The fruit and skin of the banana are loaded with potassium, which roses love. It’s always tempting to overfeed our garden plants, but you should not feed roses after the 15th of August. This is especially true in growing areas in which the temperature can reach lower than 20 degrees during winter. Feeding roses after this critical date can produce new and unwanted growth, which will not have time to mature before the cold weather arrives. Of course, one of the most important decisions regarding roses is where to plant them in the first place. Part of a rose bush’s success depends on the amount of sunlight it gets. Roses should be placed where they can receive at least six to seven hours of sunlight daily but should not be placed where they will be exposed to harsh sunshine all day. Planting them in a location where the right amount of light is available will diminish their need for water. A rose planted anywhere will still need water, but a rose in the right spot won’t need nearly as much water as one living in the blazing sun of midsummer. Never plant rose bushes close to any kind of tree. Tree roots are always very thirsty and seeking nutrients for themselves, and they will most likely rob the roses of these two essential elements. High on the list of considerations for plant placement is how easily the gardener and passersby can enjoy the beauty of the plants. Be sure to place roses in an area where they can be easily viewed. Consider whether you’ll be able to see them from inside your home. One rule of thumb with roses is that you always get what you pay for—this is not the time to pinch pennies. After purchasing the best unwaxed stock, carefully select a planting site with adequate drainage, healthy soil, some wind shelter, and the proper lighting, as described above. Growing roses does require some dedication as well as planning and being willing to educate yourself on planting conditions, plant disease, and pest control. As with all garden specimens, there are challenges to growing roses, but they are certainly worth the effort. Cuddly Critters
’Tis the Season for Loud, Startling Noises How to Help Your Anxious Pup By Elizabeth French
Between crashing thunderstorms, tornado sirens, and celebratory fireworks, summer can wreak havoc on an anxious dog. Symptoms of pet anxiety can include trembling, tucking the tail, hiding, diarrhea, barking, urinating, howling, chewing, disinterest, and escape behaviors such as digging and scratching at exit points. Agitated animals may also lick and nip at themselves (leading to skin sores) or get injured while trying to flee. Fear is an instinct that manifests in all animals— humans included—and can be caused by everyday stressors. When an animal perceives a threat (real or imagined), the “freeze, fight, or flight” response is triggered. If an animal is already suffering from separation anxiety (which includes about 14 percent of dogs across America), perceived threats can develop into phobias, which are fears based on a specific stimulus. Thunderstorms and fireworks are the two most common phobias for pets. Typically, phobias develop in the formative age, between one and three years. On occasion, separation anxiety can form between 8 and 10 months, or as a symptom of aging. Whether your pet is suffering from separation anxiety or a specific phobia, finding the trigger is essential to helping alleviate the symptoms. The best way to help prevent anxious behaviors is to modify them using training techniques meant to relax your canine companion. When an animal is exhibiting signs of anxiety, do not encourage the behavior in any way—your pet may interpret this as a reward. Instead, encourage your pet to be calm without reinforcing the fear. During a storm, for example, resume normal activities within the home and participate in an activity that your dog enjoys, like playing ball or cuddling on the couch. Some dogs feel safe when crated, but some do not. Keeping your dog out in the open can sometimes alleviate feelings of being “trapped.” Never punish an animal that is panicking or exhibiting anxious behaviors. When treated early, counter-conditioning can be a slow yet effective way of treating pet anxiety. If your pet has separation anxiety, for example, exposing your pet to small amounts of alone time and growing from there can lead to a vast improvement in behavior. When treating a dog with separation anxiety, the goal is to teach the dog to tolerate being alone without its owners. Your pet may even grow to enjoy it! As for thunderstorms and other trigger events, be sure that your dog has a “safe” place to hide. This might be a favorite closet, a bathroom, or the basement. Giving your pet free rein to find its “happy place” if it wants to hide can significantly

help reduce fear and anxious behaviors. Some dogs, however, benefit from being outside, in the thick of the noise itself, playing ball or being distracted by an activity. If you try this, be sure to stay outside with your dog. If anxious behaviors develop, allow your pet to come indoors. Turning on the radio or television for background noise indoors can help drown out loud sounds and, potentially, keep your canine calm. Finally, if these tactics don’t help, there are pet body wraps specifically designed to make pets feel safe in triggering situations. The idea is the same as swaddling an infant—that the gentle but constant pressure of the wrap feels like a safe hug. ThunderShirt is a popular brand, but you could even use something like an elastic bandage to wrap your dog. If your dog’s behavior is still out of control and you prefer the natural route, a relaxing massage or substances like Rescue Remedy or pheromone sprays might be the answer to your pet’s woes. Rescue Remedy is a combination of herbs and flower extracts meant to calm the nerves. Pheromones come in a diffuser and emulate the hormone that mother dogs produce to increase the bond with her puppies. While both are deemed safe and natural, it is always important to consult your veterinarian before beginning any sort of treatment plan. Your vet will want to rule out any possible medical conditions (for example, thyroid or brain disease) that could be causing the seemingly anxious behavior before starting a treatment plan. Sometimes, lead poisoning and other outside contaminants can cause this type of behavior, as well, so your veterinarian will perform a blood test before administering or prescribing any medication. Medication is typically a last resort and only used in severe cases, particularly during occasions like thunderstorms or fireworks displays. Medicating your dog may make you a bit uncomfortable, but, just like with people, it is sometimes the most effective way to help a pet get through a severe episode of anxiety. If your pet is prescribed any anti-anxiety medication, be sure to follow your vet’s instructions closely. Sources for this article included: petmd.com, akc.org, dogster.com, and pethealthnetwork.com. Positive Perspective
Passing the Drama Crown Flip Your Switch to OFF “Difficulty is inevitable. Drama is a choice.” —Anita Renfroe Ouch…I just realized that I’ve been a drama queen over the last couple of years. Never in a million years would I have thought that I was capable of this. I most likely would have denied it to the death. But then, after being pushed by a good friend, I started to take a good, hard look at myself. I realized that it was true! Like I said…ouch! So, why did I choose drama? Why does anyone choose drama? It’s as if life sweeps us up in a tornado, and off we go. We’re traveling a million miles an hour, and maybe we’re afraid to get off? I don’t know what I was getting out of it. All I know is that it was making me crazy. I could feel the toll it was taking on my health and relationships. I had to make a new decision about my life. “Often, it’s not about becoming a new person, but becoming the person you were meant to be, and already are, but don’t know how to be.” —Heath L. Buckmaster So, how did I do it? Like every other change I’ve ever made in my life. I made the decision and then started changing my self

talk, changing my affirmations, paying attention to how “I AM,” not to how I was. “I am calm. I am relaxed. I am a professional.” I say that dozens of times a day. Out loud. Driving in my car. Lying in my bed at night. In the shower. I am “brainwashing” myself to be the way I want to be, versus the way I had been. How does it feel now that I’m the way I want to be? Great. I have flipped off the drama switch permanently. Does that mean that “outside” conditions have changed? Not much. I still have way too much on my plate. But you know what? The only thing I can change RIGHT NOW is me. I can’t really change anything or anyone else. Just me. “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” —Reinhold Niebuhr If anyone has ever accused you of being a drama queen (or king), you might consider stepping back and evaluating whether or not there’s truth in the accusation. If there is, I might suggest making a decision to switch it off. I feel so much better, I look better, and I am happier. Now, that’s worth making a new decision! WE
