Publisher’s Notes
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Welcome to our 31st anniversary issue. Wow! Where have those three-plus decades gone? I was just a baby (30 years old) when my late husband and I started Women’s Edition clear back in 1986. I have been asked hundreds of times, “Why did you start this?” My passion was…and still is…small business owners. I wanted to give them the vehicle to connect with you, our readers. Women make or influence 85 percent of all buying decisions. We have helped hundreds of small businesses here in Omaha reach those women. We have businesses who have advertised with us from almost the very beginning. Our longest-term advertiser is Honeyman Rent-All. They began advertising with us in October of 1986. My heartfelt thanks go out to Pat Honeyman, Owner, and Bill Reynolds, Manager of the party rental location. (Be sure to read our Out and About column about Honeyman Rent-All on page 22!) The past 31 years have seen the passing of so many people, both in my life and in the life of Roxy Orr, our Operations Manager, who has been with me for 29 years. Parents have passed. My husband of 33 years passed in 2008. We still keep going. I would like to thank Roxy for hanging in there and making sure we came out every single month with a truly quality magazine. I could not have done it without her. Erin Lanza, our Art and Editorial Director, has been on board since October of 2003. She is not only an amazing graphic artist and designer, she is a strong, straightforward woman who has become my friend. Thank you, Erin. Monica Davis is the “new kid on the block” in our office—since January of 2015. She is our Administrative Assistant and handles all of the crazy stuff that is thrown at her. Thank you, Monica. Liz Huett, our Copy Editor, who works remotely but is such an integral part of the magazine, has been on board since March of 2015. A big thank you to Liz, as well. For 14 years, my daughter, Carissa Rosa, worked with me here at the magazine. She has moved on to her own career outside of “Mom,” but she was a great asset when she was at Women’s Edition. Thank you, Carissa. And I cannot forget all of our freelance writers, as well as the distributors. A big thank you to all of you! And last…but ABSOLUTELY NOT LEAST… all of you readers, who seek us out and pick us up every single month. Without you? We would have been dead in the water years and years ago. Please keep reading us. Please keep responding to our advertisers. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Onward! See you next month.

Recycled Fashion Trends What Goes Around, Comes Around! By Holly Bell
Every season, fashion designers get inspiration from past decades and add new twists, fabrics, and details to freshen the looks. This year is no exception—except that the recycled trends are borrowing from several decades at once, creating so many options! This is all about fun in fashion and finding what looks suit your tastes and your body best. For starters, Victorian lace is continuing to be strong this year. It is both feminine and trendy, and we’ll see it in all colors of the rainbow. I love a lacy top worn with a matching or contrasting camisole underneath for summer. So cool for those hot days, but without baring too much! Lacy tops are incredibly versatile, too. You can use them to dress up a pair of jeans, they look great with a jacket for work, and they can be worn with a skirt for cocktail hour. From the Great Gatsby decade comes the chemise—the flattering, body-skimming, no-waist flapper dress. This silhouette works for everyone and all ages. Done in today’s thin stretch or silky fabrics, you cannot get any more comfy or cool for summer! From the 1940s and 1950s, we have styles featuring circle skirts, belted shirtwaist dresses, one-piece bathing suits, and checked gingham patterns. You will find these styles looking fresh again this year. Blue gingham shorts are being featured at retailers like Target and J.Crew. You will also find airy, ankle-skimming circle skirts at your favorite boutiques. Think of what Marilyn Monroe did for the shirtwaist dress. No wonder they are popular again! The 1960s were a decade of rebellion. With a nonconformist attitude and a “question authority” mind-set, the hippie movement had a style all its own. Tunic tops and earth tones, along with flared-leg pants, were all the rage back then and are at the style forefront today. Fabrics reminiscent of the era, such as crushed velvet and tie dye, are finding their place in stores today. Say “Hello, again!” to the bohemian long dresses featuring tiny florals in floaty fabrics. Round sunglasses and big floppy hats add to the vibe, along with the choker necklaces that are so on trend for today. Annie Hall was the fashion icon of the 1970s, with her androgynous style. Elements of her look remain today, with “boyfriend” jeans, fedora hats, and oxford-style shoes. Smartly tailored jackets and pants, à la Katherine

Hepburn, are always a great classic look. Platform soles are here again, to be worn with whatever you like. I am a fan for their leg-lengthening effect. It is great to gain a couple of inches without walking on your toes! Another vintage look that is making a very important comeback today is the “Flashdance” look! (Who could forget that sweatshirt?) I am talking about the off-the-shoulder, one-shoulder trend that abounds in retail today. Add those exaggerated bell sleeves and beaded chokers, and throw in a little glitter, and we are rocking the 1980s. This decade also brought us the polished power suit. Fortunately, we are not going back to the wide padded shoulders, but the pantsuit is resurfacing again. Always a polished look, the pantsuit is a great addition to any wardrobe. As an added bonus, the jacket and pants can be mixed and matched with pretty much anything in your closet, creating a plethora of different outfits. The 1990s brought us some fresh trend cues from street wear. Punk rockers ruled with multi-colored hair and introduced us to distressed denim. That trend has evolved through every decade, through leather jackets and uptown funk. This was the first hint of mixing styles together to create a look of your own. Think of Madonna, who was likely the first to put a studded leather jacket over a full, tulle skirt. The new millennium brought us active wear as street wear, creating a whole new style genre. Mixing what was formerly considered workout wear with regular clothing has come to be known as athleisure. This new way of dressing has become a strong ongoing trend. Put a puffer jacket over a party dress. Throw a leather bomber over track pants, and add heels. Change it up any way you want! Cookie-cutter looks don’t drive fashion anymore. Today, there are no fashion rules! Wear what is comfortable to you and expresses your personality, no matter when the look originally came into style. How you dress is a statement of who you are, and being an individual is an important part of 2017. Enjoy the trends you love, and use your personal style to make them your very own. You have plenty of history to choose from! Editor’s Note: Holly has been in the fashion industry for over 30 years as a buyer, boutique store owner, visual merchandiser, and fashion show producer. She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE More information at www.elan-usa.com and www.facebook.com/ELANUSA

Grilled Ribs for Dad Place 4 pounds of beef or baby back ribs in a large roasting pan. Sprinkle black pepper and Tabasco (or your favorite hot sauce) on the meat. Cover tightly and bake in the oven for 2 hours at 350 degrees. Mix together one-half cup of chili sauce, one-fourth cup of molasses, one-fourth cup of vinegar, and 1 Tablespoon of brown sugar. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and let simmer for 5 minutes. Finish the ribs on the grill over medium-high heat, brushing with the prepared sauce. Cook about 15 minutes on both sides, basting often. Father’s Day Waffles Beat 2 egg whites with 1 teaspoon of sugar until light peaks form; set aside. Whisk together 2 cups of flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, a dash of salt, and 2 Tablespoons of sugar. Mix together 2 egg yolks, one and three-fourths cups of milk, and 4 Tablespoons of melted butter. Add the milk mixture to the flour mixture. Lightly fold in the egg whites—just enough to mix. a pot. Add 2 Tablespoons of flour and cook for a minute or two. Add 1 cup of milk and stir (avoid lumps) until thickened. Pour the white sauce over the cabbage and sprinkle in some grated cheddar. Top with buttered bread crumbs. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Baked Broccoli Wash and trim a head of fresh broccoli (or open a bag of frozen broccoli). Boil for 2 minutes, then drain. Pour into a greased baking dish. Mix together 3 eggs, 1 can of low-fat celery soup, and one-half cup of grated Parmesan. Pour the soup mixture over the broccoli. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Marinated Grilled Flank Steak Mix together one-fourth cup of soy sauce, 3 Tablespoons of honey, 2 Tablespoons of vinegar, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, one and one-half teaspoons of ground ginger (or several thin slices of fresh ginger), and one-half cup of canola oil. Place in a zip-top bag with the flank steak and 4 sliced green onions. Close the bag and refrigerate for an hour or two. Grill over mediumhigh heat to your liking (discard the marinade). Weekday Lunch Meatballs For the sauce, mix together 4 cups of ketchup, 3 cups of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon of onion powder; set aside. Gently (by hand) mix together 3 pounds of hamburger, 2 cups of quick oatmeal, 1 can (13 ounces) of evaporated milk, 2 eggs, 2 teaspoons of chili powder, one-fourth to one-half cup of chopped onion, 2 teaspoons of
salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, and one-half teaspoon of garlic powder. Make the meatballs large—about the size of an extralarge egg. Place in one or two foil-lined 9x13-inch pans. Pour the homemade sauce over the top. Cover with foil. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour. Serve with garlic toast, a salad, and fruit. (The kids will love these!) Bean Salad Drain 6 cans of your favorite garden beans (garbanzo, kidney, pinto, green, lima, wax—your choice). Place beans in a large bowl. Add a chopped green or red pepper, 2 stalks of diced celery, 1 bunch of diced green onions, and one jar of pimiento (drain). In a saucepan, blend 2 cups of vinegar, 2 cups of sugar, one-half cup of water, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Boil for 5 minutes. Pour over the bean mixture. Cover and refrigerate overnight. (The longer it sits in the fridge, the more delicious it gets.) Bill’s Speedy Brownies In a large mixing bowl, blend 2 cups of sugar, 5 eggs, 1 cup of canola oil, one-half cup of baking cocoa, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and one and three-fourths cups of all-purpose flour. Mix and pour into a greased 9x13-inch baking pan. Sprinkle with 1 cup of chocolate chips (minis or regular) or chopped nuts. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Cool on a wire rack. Cut and serve. Movers and Shakers Retirement Communities for Today’s Seniors By Marge Shoemaker
If you think today’s retirement communities are inhabited by “old folks,” you’re in for a surprise. Modern senior citizens are a different breed. Michale Kavan, the marketing director at Sunridge Village Retirement Community, calls them “movers and shakers,” and with good reason. Many of today’s seniors want to travel. Some have part-time jobs. Many are active volunteers. Sunridge Village Retirement Community can cater to these active senior citizens. “Sunridge is a smaller community, owned and operated by a local family,” Michale reports. “They truly care about their residents…they are family.” Larry and Barbara Michaud, a couple in their early 70s, agree. They moved to Sunridge last June. “We lived in the neighborhood for 25 years,” Barbara recalls. “As we watched the construction of this building 18 years ago, we agreed: This is where we wanted to go someday.” Larry adds, “We just weren’t sure when that would be.” Larry and Barbara like to travel, and they often go south to escape the Midwestern winters. “We thought of moving into an apartment so we could travel without worrying about the house,” Larry recalls. “Several years ago, we listed the house, but the market was slow and the house didn’t go.” Last year, they decided to try again, and the house sold in three days. “We were thrilled when we talked to Michale at Sunridge and found the apartment that we wanted was available,” Barbara says. They did look at other places, just to compare. “Even though we’d been neighbors with Sunridge for years, we wanted to make sure it was still the right choice,” Barbara explains. “It was comforting to learn that Sunridge offers so much more for the same dollar.” Larry chimes in that they have “felt like home since the beginning.” Larry and Barbara have no regrets about moving to Sunridge. Gone are the burdens of shoveling snow and mowing grass…or making sure someone was going to get those things done when they were gone for long periods. “The last time we came back here from a trip, the mail was on the kitchen counter. We didn’t even have to go pick it up!” Barbara exclaims. She loves having the cleaning staff come in to clean their twobedroom unit every other week. “I don’t worry when I don’t feel like cleaning,” Barbara says with a smile. “I know someone will get to it.” Larry likes the convenience of underground parking. “I don’t even mind carrying in the groceries
12
June 2017
when it’s raining,” he says. “I haven’t had to get out of the car…just used the remote.” At the mention of groceries, Barbara comments, “I still cook our meals because we aren’t used to an early meal time.” At Sunridge Village, you have the choice to be on the meal plan or not. When they choose to, however, they are able to take advantage of the dinner on any given night in the dining room for an extremely reasonable price. “It’s less than 15 dollars for the two of us, and they don’t care if we bring our own wine,” Barbara comments. Larry still works part-time as a CPA. “He’s really busy around tax time,” Barbara comments. “I used to get lonely. Now I have people right here in the complex to do things with.” Barbara is a retired nurse. “I’ve always liked helping people.” They both still drive, and sometimes they are asked for a ride. “Friends call: ‘I forgot something at the store,’ or ‘I have a doctor’s appointment my kids can’t take me to,’ or ‘There is a scheduling conflict for the Sunridge van.’” Barbara seldom turns down these requests. “My favorite is, ‘If you’re not busy, let’s go to lunch,’” she says with a smile. The only thing they miss is not being able to have a grill on the balcony. “I asked about a grill out there, but Richard [the owner at Sunridge] said it was against the fire code,” Larry says. They do enjoy sitting outside in the atrium in nice weather. “It reminds me of our old yard,” Barbara says, “but we’re not responsible for the upkeep.” Larry still visits the old neighborhood. “Seeing our old neighbors out there mowing or shoveling or hauling out their garbage cans makes me appreciate Sunridge even more,” he concludes. Their advice to other couples considering a move to a senior community? Do it while you’re young enough to enjoy not having the burden of your own house! Sunridge Village Retirement Community is located at 13410 Blondo Street, in Omaha. They can be reached by phone at 402-496-0116. A Woman’s Work
Heroes and Strangers The Lives of Dads
By Sharon Knierim
Some of us are fortunate enough to have grown up with fathers who were seriously committed to parenting. These men who we treasured as the leaders of our families typically sought to be paragons of virtue, hard workers, and dispensers of all kinds of wisdom, guiding us toward our own adulthood. Many modern dads jump right into the role of fatherhood by changing diapers, providing bottles, and crawling out of bed for that much-dreaded 2 a.m. feeding. Not so long ago, this was unheard of. Today, the bonding between father and child seems to begin earlier than it did in the past. Expectant fathers are very often involved in the prenatal aspects of pregnancy and in childbirth…which used to be a singular journey for a motherto-be and her unborn child. Today, however, we see soon-to-be papas at birthing classes and assisting in the labor and delivery of their own children. Many of today’s dads are as familiar with their children’s inoculations and school grades as their counterparts and are often involved in daily activities with their offspring. No longer are children strangers to their father, wandering in and out of his life like actors in a stage play.

Growing up, we learn all the good things about our dads. We learn to understand and appreciate their strengths. We focus on their good qualities. Whether they project a John Wayne–like persona or a likeness to Atticus Finch, we love our dads. A father is often the rock that holds an entire family together. Beyond providing a major income for the family, his very presence is reassuring for every member of the brood. Typically, after being under our dad’s wing for at least 18 years, we come to value and welcome his talents and very presence. In essence, as we grow and mature, Dad becomes our hero. He is the one who can solve problems. He is the one we come to for advice and counseling. We often seek his approval, above and beyond the approval of all others. This feeling is

not to be confused with adoration or adulation…it’s a form of respect that grows, over the years, into something almost tangible. Somewhere along the route to our own adulthood, we begin to pick up little hints that Dad may have been someone else in his earlier life. It usually begins with a slip of the tongue by a friend or relative who shared Dad’s youth. We learn about activities that we cannot fathom our own fathers taking part in. Does Dad have a split personality? Did he really dance on tables or pull pranks that we would never dare to try? Can it be possible that Dad was once involved with a woman other than Mother? Well, hang on to your hats, girls. Dad probably doesn’t have a split personality, but he did have a life before his chicks were born. Everybody deserves his or her own youth. When we are young, we experiment and learn from our own mistakes. Youth is the time to be free of encumbrances and many responsibilities. When we are young, many of us are focused on ourselves and our friends. We are strangers to who we later become. Some people call this “getting it out of our systems.” Just as we ourselves had more fun than should be legal, so it was with our fathers. It can be a shock to discover that dear old Dad wasn’t always the guy who took us camping or made sure we had our allowance. Before taking on his role as head man of the family, Dad had to grow up, and part of growing up is branching out. So, can a dad be a hero and a stranger at the same time? The answer is a resounding: YES, HE CAN. After all, who would want a dad who had been nothing but utterly responsible all his life? All people are multifaceted and live lives that include all kinds of experiences. These experiences make us who we are today. These experiences allow us to make decisions and to understand what our lives are all about. So, if you see your father gazing off into the distance with a wistful or melancholy look on his face, allow him that time. After all, he might be remembering a young man who used to be so familiar and now seems like a stranger. When he comes back to the present, take the time to let him know how much you appreciate him. After all, even heroes need a pat on the back from time to time. WE

Vantage Point
Preventing Nursing Home Abuse Defend the Dignity Your Loved Ones Deserve By Jackie Byers
Nebraska native Shayla Reed grew up in Bellevue. “I knew by fifth grade that I loved to argue,” she says. “And I was good at it—for an untrained kid.” Her days at Creighton and then the University of Nebraska College of Law gave her the training to succeed as an advocate with a conscience. Along her career path, she steeped herself in formal argument. Her college debate coach at Creighton partnered her with a young man who, according to Shayla, “knew most things about most things. I always was able to talk; he always had the facts for support.” Success sent the team to the World Debating Championships twice. “The competition I treasure was held in Australia. It was against teams from all over the world,” Shayla recalls. The experience challenged and amazed her. “Some competitors were not native English speakers but were so talented. We were given topics and only 15 minutes to prepare. A coin flip decided pro or con on issues like ‘Should the United States be the world’s policeman?’ One current event then that I remember two teams arguing had to do with who was to blame for the bloodshed in East Timor.” After debating successes and a law degree, Shayla worked for a major insurance company, arguing against large awards for accident victims. She learned a lot about the methods used to win such cases, and she achieved great results for her company…but she didn’t like the results that she was achieving. Was it right to deny compensation to someone who had been seriously injured or even chronically disabled? She started to feel like she was on the wrong side. She decided to take her career in a different direction and went into private practice in 2006. One of the formative experiences of Shayla’s life was witnessing the mental and physical decline of her greataunt, Marie. She speaks fondly of Aunt Marie, someone she loved and greatly admired. “Aunt Marie was sharp as a tack—and so much fun! She was lively and a great cook, working at a cafe in a small Iowa town.” When Aunt Marie developed Alzheimer’s disease, she lost focus, even leaving the oven on all night. For safety, Shayla’s family brought her to live with them. Eventually, however, they were forced to place her in a nursing home. They visited regularly, and Shayla was dismayed by what she observed. “I remember seeing her bruised all over. Articles of her clothing, her glasses, her hearing aids, even her dentures disappeared. I was too young to understand, but as I studied law, I came to realize that the nursing home seriously neglected her.” “Moving to a nursing home should not be a death sentence,” Shayla asserts. “Every person in a care facility deserves careful treatment and personal dignity. Nebraska

has some important laws regarding the care of patients.” Shayla explains that such facilities are charged with caring for people of all ages, even children with serious injuries or disabilities. Family members of patients need to monitor the care their Attorney Shayla Reed loved ones receive. Shayla’s law firm is the only one in Nebraska devoted exclusively to nursing home abuse and neglect cases. “What means the most to me is that I am doing the right thing for the right reasons,” she notes. Her clients are grateful for her compassion and expertise. “The way you guided us through the entire process was more like a friend than an attorney,” shares one client. “I would recommend you to anyone.” Another client says, “Thank you for everything. We truly appreciate your kindness and compassion.” With strong conviction, Shayla declares, “I am where I am supposed to be.” Switching from defending an insurance company to defending victims of abuse gives Shayla great personal satisfaction. “In Aunt Marie’s day, nursing homes were few and far between. Their duties were not clearly defined or particularly regulated.” Things have changed greatly in the 21st century. Care facilities have many roles today. Their clientele includes senior citizens with a wide variety of needs. These facilities also serve patients of all ages in need of rehabilitation or critical care. Their duties to their clients are carefully regulated in Nebraska and in many other states. If you suspect that your loved one is being neglected or mistreated in a care facility, Shayla Reed can help. For more information, visit www.reedlawomaha.com. Fresh Concept
The Credit Union A Cooperative Destination for Your Hard-Earned Dollars By Karen Collins
What could be more American than credit unions? Equality and democracy are at the heart of these cooperative financial institutions. You may be surprised to learn, then, that the model for our credit unions originated in Germany in 1850 and was introduced to Canada in 1900. The first credit union in the United States opened in 1908. The first financial cooperatives originated in England during the 19th century. However, the mastermind behind the model upon which our current credit unions are based was a German economist named Franz Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch. His version of the credit union, also known as a people’s bank, was geared toward the needs of urban dwellers and business owners. Rural credit unions would soon follow. In 1864, a German business owner founded the first rural credit union, which helped farmers purchase supplies and livestock to keep their farms operating. The successful credit union model eventually spread across the Atlantic. A court reporter named Alphonse Desjardins set up a credit union in Quebec in 1900. His goal was to help working class families obtain loans at reasonable interest rates. (At the time, loan sharking was a common practice.) He was also instrumental in helping Monsignor Pierre Hevey organize the first credit union in the United States, in 1908, in Manchester, New Hampshire. This first American credit union operated under the official name of St. Mary’s Cooperative Credit Association, and there were no restrictions on membership. The savings deposits that accumulated in the credit union were used to make loans to its members, which were repaid at reasonable rates. The staff was entirely volunteer until 1916. Within 15 years, the credit union had amassed assets in excess of $1 million. Its 100th anniversary was celebrated in 2008.Though at some point the name was changed to St. Mary’s Bank, that very first American credit union continues to do business as a credit union today. So, how are credit unions different from traditional banks? First, there are no stockholders; credit unions are non-profit institutions. Credit unions often have mission statements that are community-oriented, striving to serve their members instead of trying to make a profit. Anyone can open an account at any bank, but credit unions’ members generally have something in common, demographically. This may be based on members having the same employer or type of career. It may be that they share a specific geographic region or are members of a specific religious or fraternal organization. Family members of qualified credit union members are often permitted to join. Members have equal power to vote for the volunteer board of directors, regardless of the amount of each member’s deposit. Generally speaking, member-
20

ship is achieved by simply being a customer with an active account in the credit union. Deposits may be referred to as “shares” because of the membership concept. There are advantages to being a member of a credit union. For example, loan and savings account interest rates are often better than what you might find at a forprofit financial institution (that is, a bank). The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) provides a link at its website which allows consumers to compare interest and savings rates between credit unions and other financial institutions. In addition, some credit unions partner with local businesses and offer members-only discounts on products and services. Many credit unions offer lower fees for services than banks do and often ask for lower balance requirements for savings and checking accounts. The services offered by credit unions, however, are nearly identical to those offered by banks. Such services are likely to include electronic banking, direct deposit, ATM access, debit cards, overdraft protection, and financial education. Credit unions offer a wide variety of loans, including business, mortgage, home equity, auto, home improvement, and consumer loans. Some credit unions offer student loans. Likewise, savings products are available in a variety of types. Checking and savings accounts, CDs, IRAs, money market accounts, and credit card accounts are available at most credit unions. Because they are smaller institutions, credit unions tend to have fewer branches and dedicated ATMs than large banks. To offset this inconvenience, some credit unions are part of a shared branching network, which means you can visit a branch of a partnering credit union that may be closer to your home or workplace. Some credit unions (and some banks) offer their members reimbursement for usage fees paid at other institutions’ ATMs. Credit unions can be chartered at the federal or state level. Federally chartered credit unions are regulated by the National Credit Union Administration and insure their members’ deposits through the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF). Credit union deposits insured by NCUSIF are insured for up to $250,000 per individual depositor. This is similar to bank deposit accounts, which are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) for up to $250,000.
www.womensedition.com
State-chartered credit unions are usually regulated by the state supervisory authority where the main office of the credit union is located. They may choose to insure members’ deposits through NCUSIF, but they have the option of choosing private insurers, instead. (The credit union must disclose the fact that funds are privately insured.) Our credit unions still represent a fairly young financial concept and have been changing throughout the past few decades. It was only in the late 1970s that laws were created that allowed credit unions to offer mortgage loans and share certificates. Not all credit unions are alike. Some states do not regulate or charter credit unions—only federally chartered credit unions are available in those states. State-chartered credit unions may have different rates, since regulations at the state level are not necessarily the same as regulations at the federal level. Depending upon the particular situation, this can be an advantage to the members or a disadvantage. As at any financial institution, be sure to review the available rates on the products you want before opening an account at a credit union. Credit unions serve members from every walk of life, including a wide range of ages. They offer financial literacy resources, including programs and materials that assist parents in teaching the importance of saving to young children, information on college costs and ways to save for college, tips for college-aged young adults to protect them from financial scams targeted at their demographic, comparisons of financial methods of saving for and purchasing a car or home, ways to save for retirement, and more. So, how does a potential credit union member figure out which credit union to join? How do you find the best credit
union for you? Start by looking close to home. If a relative is a member of a credit union, there is a possibility you could join based on being in the same family. Your employer may offer credit union membership to its employees. Speak with trusted friends to see if they have personal recommendations. Membership eligibility may be as simple as being located in a particular geographic area. The NCUA website has a couple of handy tools to locate credit unions and get information about them. You can locate credit unions by city, zip code, state, or name. The credit union’s charter number, year chartered, number of members, assets, address, website, phone number, CEO or manager, as well as other information, will be provided. Note that under the credit union type category, there may be a designation of FCU (federal credit union) or FISCU (federally insured statechartered credit union). “Field of Membership Type” may indicate that it is a non-federal credit union, but it may also simply list information about the type of association or group that its members are part of. Once you have narrowed your search, there is no substitute for the old-fashioned personal meeting. Visit the credit union to get a feel for the people and philosophy of that particular group. They will likely be happy to provide you with written materials and discuss any questions you have about their membership, services, fees, rates, and so on. You will then be on your way to setting and reaching financial goals in a cooperative type of financial institution that has been helping people in the United States for more than a century. Honeyman Rent-All Turn Your Project or Party Into a Reality By Deanna Beal
When I was a child, I was part of a very busy household! My family was always working on some project or another. When we weren’t planning a project, we were throwing a party—and we sometimes did both in the same weekend! So, I felt right at home when I walked through the doors of Honeyman Rent-All. I was so excited to meet Pat Honeyman, who describes herself as the “owner, president, and jack-of-all-trades” of the Honeyman business, which she and her husband, Dennis, began in 1968. When the Honeymans say they are a family owned and operated business, they aren’t kidding. Their two sons, Mark and Troy; daughter, Lisa; granddaughter, Mercedes; and Pat’s sister, Donna, all work in various management, bookkeeping, and customer service roles throughout the two stores. Their 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren have shadowed in jobs like washing dishes and ironing napkins. Even their nonfamily employees might as well be related—Pat notes that Bill Reynolds, manager of the party rental location, and Chuck Rouse, manager of the equipment rental location,

have been with them for so many years that they are both just like family. Customers from all over Omaha, Lincoln, eastern Nebraska, and western Iowa trust Honeyman Rent-All for equipment and party rental items time and time again. On a graduation weekend, they could have as many as 7,000 chairs going out their doors…not to mention the tables, linens, candelabras, arches, serving trays, soft serve machines, candy dishes, and inflatables, to name a few. The list goes on and on. Pat explains that “pipe and drape” is a very popular way to transform the look of a party, event, or wedding,

either indoors or outdoors. One young lady graduating from high school needed to transform the family garage into a more suitable setting for her big day. Pipe and drape was the perfect solution to mask her father’s hunting trophies. In order to offer their customers more items that are unique and current, they travel to conventions each year. They’ve traveled to conventions such as the California Rental Association and the American Rental Association to purchase new and updated supplies and equipment. If you want your party to be an original event that stands out from the crowd, browsing the showroom at the Honeyman Rent-All party rental location is a must. “We’ve got things that other people don’t rent,” Pat notes as she shows me some hidden treasures. We walk past a turtle statue, about three feet long and two feet high. To my surprise, Pat removes the domed pewter shell to reveal a wooden cutting board for carving items such as meats and cheeses. Pat fondly remembers driving home from Orlando with a 38-quart copper chafer in their car. This particular chafer was originally from Switzerland. At the time, it was one of only two in the United States—the other one was being used to serve in the White House. These are just a couple of the amazing items that line the walls and floors of their showroom. As they say: How can you have an event and not invite them?
When Pat shares the Honeyman philosophy on doing business, she attributes their longevity and success to being raised on a farm. “Farmers are hard workers,” she says. “My husband was one with lots of common sense. He would follow the customer all the way through to make sure he got his job done.” Her son, Troy, general manager to both locations, is truly a teacher, she shares. He will go through a job with a customer from top to bottom to make sure the customer has the best choice of equipment for the job, has everything she needs, and fully understands how to run each piece of equipment. “If something doesn’t work, we will make it right. We treat others like we know we would want to be treated.” Whether you are working on a project or hosting a party, you’ll probably need some specialty items that you may not use again. If you don’t need an item regularly, why would you buy it, maintain it, and store it yourself when you can rent whatever you need at Honeyman RentAll? Their tools and equipment are of the highest quality and are kept in top condition. Before you begin your next project or plan your next party, visit honeymanrentall. com to see everything they have available. Oncology Associates Where You’re More Than Your Disease By Marge Shoemaker
Most of us have been touched by cancer in some way or another— a beloved family member, a friend, a coworker. The good news is that many advances have been made in oncology over the years, which means that many cancers are highly treatable. Means of diagnosis, methods of treatment, and control of symptoms have all been improved through research and practice. However, as Dr. Irina Popa of Oncology Associates reminds us, improvement in cancer diagnosis and treatment doesn’t mean we should sit back and relax! Regardless of medical advances, we must be proactive. “People have to be involved in their own health care,” says Dr. Popa. “They must have self-interest in doing their best rather than treating their diagnosis with complacency.” When I heard this, I was reminded of an article in my local newspaper (reprinted from The LA Times) that recently caught my eye: “Roughly half of cancer deaths in the U.S. could be prevented if all Americans would quit smoking, cut back on drinking, maintain a healthful weight, and get at least 150 minutes of exercise each week (that’s only 30 minutes a day for
five days).” To maintain good health, we must not be complacent. Dr. Popa (pronounced POPE-uh) developed her professional medical attitude during her first years in medical school, when her aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer. “During that period, I was the one who took care of her,” she relates. “I witnessed her suffering, her lack of hope, her need for care…I knew I would have to combine the scientific and emotional sides of medicine when dealing with my patients.” Dr. Popa came to the United States after finishing medical school in Romania. “I wanted to live and work in a democratic society full

Reveal Your Hidden Beauty Facial Treatments for Everyone By Monica L. Davis
Wouldn’t it be great if we could just wave a magic wand and make our skin suddenly more youthful, healthy, and vibrant? We all know it’s not quite that easy, but a professional facial treatment goes a long way toward rejuvenation. If your skin has been worn down by hormones, aging, and harsh elements, it’s time to head to your favorite day spa or salon for a little TLC. A facial is a beauty treatment that cleanses, rejuvenates, and restores the skin of the face. Additional benefits include relaxation and improved circulation. The recommended frequency and type of facial treatment depends on your skin care goals, your age, and the current condition of your skin. A classic facial treatment cleanses with steam and exfoliates with a scrub. In addition, a mask suited to your skin type is applied, followed by a moisturizer. The classic facial is beneficial for clients who want to add extra life to lackluster skin and who are not particularly prone to acne or dry skin. For clients prone to acne, an acne reduction facial is recommended. This treatment uses deep cleaning, steaming, and exfoliation to reduce the severity of acne. Afterward, a specially formulated mask is applied. You should check with your dermatologist prior to having an acne reduction facial. She may recommend more frequent visits to ensure oil-free results. Once the conditions have improved and skin balances out, your visits may be a little less frequent.
If skin seems especially dull or lackluster, you might try a brightening facial or a fruit facial. A brightening facial incorporates vitamin C and other powerful antioxidants to even out skin tone, boost radiance, and improve the skin’s natural defenses against future sun damage. Fruit facials are totally natural, as the enzymes and antioxidants found in fresh fruit combat dark spots and fine lines. Fruits packed with vitamin C give skin a beautiful glow! By now, most of us have noticed some of the damaging effects the sun has had on our skin. An antioxidant facial contains exactly what it says—antioxidants that help combat the damage done by the sun and other pollutants in the air. This treatment evens out skin tone, clears your complexion, and leaves your skin glowing! The mask and ingredients used in this type of facial are enriched with vitamins A, C, and E. If you want to further combat the signs of aging, you might also ›››

consider a collagen facial. These treatments use very similar steps to the classic facial treatment but with specialized ingredients to target the signs of aging. Collagen is a natural protein that is produced by the body to make skin tight and supple. Your spa professional will massage your face with collagen-enriched creams, which are typically left on for about 30 minutes. The results reveal tighter and brighter skin, as well as a more youthful appearance. The latest and greatest facial treatment is the oxygen facial treatment, and it really does seem like waving a magic wand. This treatment is performed by applying pure, pressurized oxygen to the skin to minimize fine lines and wrinkles. During the treatment, the esthetician will wave an airbrush-type wand over your face. The wand applies oxygen and anti-aging serums to the face, and—poof! You have youngerlooking, healthier-looking skin. It works because the oxygen treatment produces collagen, rejuvenating your skin and creating that healthy glow. For optimum results, an oxygen facial treatment typically requires six separate sessions, with touchups whenever you desire. If your goal is just to relax and be pampered, an aromatherapy facial will take you away! After cleaning and exfoliation, a mask enhanced with essential oils is applied. Peppermint and lavender promote stress relief and are great for sensitive skin. Lemongrass or tea tree oil can help balance out acne-prone skin. If you are dealing with overly dry skin, a facial with patchouli and tea tree oil can help moisturize. If you don’t already have a favorite esthetician, salon, or spa, ask your friends and family if they can suggest someone with a good reputation. At the salon, confirm that the esthetician is licensed to perform the treatment you are seeking (you can ask to see their documentation). One last thing, ladies: With Father’s Day upon us, it’s important to know that facial treatments aren’t just for women. Everyone loves healthy skin! Specific products and applications are formulated for men’s skin, to roll back the damage from sun and shaving. Ask at your salon about an Aromasque facial or regenerating facial for the special man in your life. Remind your guy that the best thing about a facial treatment is that it’s an indulgence that you don’t have to feel guilty about—in fact, your skin will thank you for it! Be Happy, Enjoy The Game Rewrite Your “To Do” List “Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game.”—Michael Jordan Now there’s a concept. With all of the items that we all have on our “to do” lists, my best guess is that very few of us have put Michael Jordan’s suggestions on them. We put hours, days, months, and years into accomplishing “goals” we’ve set for ourselves. Why is it that we rarely—if ever—make having fun and/ or being happy one of them?
By Janet Van deWalle
Making a decision to “cut to the chase” and be happy—right now—is not as difficult as you may believe. If you make the decision that the most important thing in your life is for you to be happy, you will find yourself making different choices. When being happy is at the top of your list of things to do, you will gravitate toward those people, things, and experiences that make you smile. “I am happy and content because I think I am.” —Alain-René Lesage
“Fun is good.” —Dr. Seuss If you stop and think about it, just about everything any of us has ever wanted in our lives, we’ve wanted because we think we will feel better once we have received it. We believe that “thing” that we are striving for will make us happy. “Once I get that new job…once my car is paid off…once I get married…once I lose 30 pounds…” Why don’t we just cut to the chase and be happy? Now, some of you may be thinking that you don’t have anything to be happy about. How do we change that habit of thought? The trick is to find thoughts that feel good while thinking them and to make a decision that we are going to be happy. “Most folks are about as happy as they make their minds up to be.” —Abraham Lincoln

Smiling, laughing, playing—will make every day of your life what it was meant to be. If you stop and think about it, delaying joy for a later date is a very weird concept. Do we really believe that we’re only entitled to a set amount of happiness in our lives? Do we really believe that the meter starts running when we laugh out loud? “The happiest people seem to be those who have no particular cause for being happy except that they are so.” —William Ralph Inge I don’t know about you, but I’m rewriting my “to do” list. I’m making the decision that the most important goal in my life is to be happy. Thanks for the advice, Michael. WE

School’s Out! What Do the Kids Remember of Their Year? School’s out for summer. Everyone’s moving on. Kids from preschool to college are commencing into another year of the rest of their lives. Now is a good time to review the year. Chat with the kids about their favorite class…besides gym and lunch… and what they liked about it. Ask about their favorite teacher and what made him or her special. It doesn’t matter what age or grade the kids are in. They have opinions. I always liked school, probably because everything was easy for me…except long division. Dad tried to explain it to me. His explanation was different from my teacher’s. I was frustrated to the point of tears. I excelled in spelling…nearly always got 100s on the tests. (I got that from Mom, who had straight As in orthography.) One time, we had a class spelling bee. I vividly remember that the kids before me had words like love, glove, and shove. I got “of,” and blurted out “o-v-e” before I realized my mistake. That was embarrassing! I don’t particularly remember any teachers until I was in the eighth grade. Mr. Hamm was our teacher. Kids from our room got to be the office helpers who went from classroom to classroom each morning, recording lunch count and collecting attendance cards. Eighth graders were in also charge of handing out the safety patrol gear and keeping track of the schedule. I remember that Mr. Hamm did his best to make things interesting. For a science project, he had us take pictures with a Kodak Brownie

camera and then develop the film. We used a utility closet as a dark room. He trusted us to behave and be responsible. We acted accordingly. I also remember my high school social studies teacher, Mr. Stewart, who knew I deplored giving oral reports. “Remember,” he’d say supportively, “everyone has to do this. They are all nervous, too.” He also supported me when I had to go to the principal for permission for a special project. When I told him what I was going to say, he said, “That’s a good plan. You are emphasizing all the right things. Just ask with confidence, and you’ll get your permission.” It worked. Both these teachers were strict but fair. They taught me that having self-confidence is an important part of being successful. There were other teachers I didn’t like because their classes were hard or I didn’t care for their subject. I learned to appreciate them later because they made me work. That work ethic helped tremendously when I went to college. Talk about your school experiences with your kids. Get them to share. Find out what they remember from the past year…and why it was memorable. Everybody will learn. Most of all, thank the teacher. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

The “She Shed” A Sweet Escape From Everyday Life
By Robyn V. Powell
When Virginia Woolf, one of the foremost modernists of the 20th century, penned her essay, “A Room of One’s Own,” she was speaking to a woman’s need for the personal liberty to create art. Almost 100 years later, Woolf’s words still tap into a sentiment many of us share. In a seemingly overwhelming life, we are left to wonder, “Is there room for me?” The answer—Yes! The women of the 21st century are unabashedly staking claim to a room and making it their very own. Welcome the She Shed! She Sheds are sweeping the nation. In a trend that’s showing no sign of slowing down, women everywhere are creating blissful retreats—small places to slip away from the stresses and demands of everyday life. Whether it’s a career, piles of laundry, or simply the wear of the daily grind, women yearn for a place to go to quietly read a book, practice yoga, sip a glass of wine, pursue a hobby, or work in peace. You’re probably familiar with the term “man cave.” Although we might picture testosterone-fueled lairs, geared to recharge a man through male-driven interests, the point of the man cave is for a man to have a space that is just his own, whatever that may be. Similarly, the She Shed is infused with a feminine sensibility, designed to restore and nurture the female soul and spirit. Essentially, it’s a dedicated place for you to go and do whatever it is your heart desires. A She Shed it can be almost anywhere, but the most popular
choice is the traditional garden shed. Inspired by the idea that immersing yourself in nature nurtures well-being, is soul-soothing, and fosters creativity, women everywhere are transforming simple garden sheds into cocoons that are built for the outdoors but stylish enough to live inside. A She Shed can be a simple room or an elaborate, custom-built enclave. It can be wired and plumbed, complete with luxuries like a shimmering chandelier or coffee bar. (While candles and sunlight may be all the illumination your spirit needs, electricity and ventilation will go a long way toward enhancing your comfort and extending seasonal use.) Shed companies offer a multitude of shed styles at different price points, using products that are built to last, like pressure-treated wood and galvanized steel. If you desire a highly specific design style, talk to a general contractor, who can customize a shed to your exact specifications. There are endless ways to make your She Shed bloom with personality, whether your preferred palette is colorful ›››

and fun, designed to energize and lift your spirits, or a light-filled, ethereal space with white-washed floors and walls, designed to turn down the volume. Add a daybed to create the perfect setting for an afternoon nap! Bask in natural harmony with furnishings crafted from woven fibers like wicker and rattan finished in sun-kissed tones of honey. Revel in the beauty of imperfection—rough-hewn wood walls and floors softened with your favorite artwork and jute rugs. Scour antique shops for pieces that will give your space a cozy and quaint vibe. For the gardener or hobbyist, maximize floor space and keep everything organized with smallspace storage solutions readily available in container stores. Whatever you do, make it yours! Choose a theme that resonates with the inner you. For example, if you’ve always wanted to live near the ocean, design your She Shed with a nautical or beach theme. Imagine walking across your yard and entering a whole new fabulous space! If you can dream it, an interior designer can help you develop the concept and pull it all together with color, furnishings, and accessories. If outdoor space is not an option, create an indoor enclave. Garages, spare bedrooms, basements, and attics can all serve as places to get away without leaving home. An attic retreat, with its pitched ceiling lines and dormer windows, can evoke the wonderful feeling of being far above the frenetic fray of everyday life. Tuck into a cozy window seat with a favorite book. Design a personal studio for crafts, art, or sewing. Add an easel, work table, or desk and create a loft for the artist or writer in you. Convenient shelving and custom-built furniture will keep supplies tidy and organized, leaving endless creative possibilities at your fingertips. There are absolutely no rules when creating the perfect She Shed. It’s about making an exhilarating and inspiring space of your own, where you are free to be you. Whether you desire a space that’s ultra-feminine or minimalist and utilitarian, a place designed for doing something or for doing absolutely nothing at all, the She Shed is truly a room of one’s own. Primrose School of La Vista is More Than Child Care Forging a Path to a Brighter Future By Deanna Beal
Theresa Thibodeau is the co-owner of Primrose School of La Vista, along with her husband, Joe. Her passion for education and love for all-things-children began when she was a child herself, and she cites her parents’ influence as her biggest inspiration. “Education was very important to my parents,” she shares. “I learned my work ethic from my father, and I learned my caring attitude from my mother.” When Theresa was a student, she was not allowed to work during the school year, so she could focus on her education and athletics. “My dad always said, ‘I don’t expect straight As if you’re working to the best of your ability,’” she recalls. Her father also taught her to plan financially by expecting her to work during the summers—and the money she earned over the summer was expected to last nine months, throughout the school year. “He taught me budgeting, which is very helpful when you are in business.” As she looks back on those summers, she realizes that her jobs were in caregiving roles, such as a nanny and a lifeguard. Theresa earned her degree from the University of Nebraska in Omaha, where she majored in psychology with a focus in early childhood development. As Joe went through his medical training in cardiology, Theresa worked for eight years in various HR roles. When their second child was around age one, she recognized that he was not hitting developmental milestones that he was capable of hitting. She knew the importance of education in children younger than five years, so she decided to stay home with her children to make sure they were properly prepared for school. At about that time, Theresa heard of a Primrose location opening where they lived (in Kansas City), and a college friend opened two Primrose locations in Minnesota. As Theresa learned about Primrose, she became a strong supporter of the Primrose brand. Once Joe completed his cardiology fellowship, the family moved back to Omaha, where Theresa and Joe were raised. This is when Theresa was able to piece together all of her life experiences, education, and passion for early childhood development under one roof by opening Primrose School of La Vista. Theresa explains that Primrose La Vista is designed to not only care for children but also to provide educational, social, emotional, and physical development for children from age six weeks all the way through private kindergarten. “Who they become is just as important as what they know,” she asserts. Erin Swanson Russell, the mother of a Primrose student, shares, “Primrose La Vista has been such a great

experience for our daughter. As first-time parents, we were especially nervous about leaving her every day. We wanted to ensure she was receiving the care and attention she needed to grow and develop in a nurturing environment. Primrose La Vista has offered a comfortable situation for our family, and our daughter has thrived in her time there. We know she loves “going to school,” as her face lights up with every drop-off to see her friends and teachers.” At Primrose La Vista, the teachers work as a team to meet the individual needs of each child. What makes Primrose La Vista so unique, Theresa believes, is their personal connection to parents. “We really get to know our parents; we view them as team members, as well.” Primrose La Vista is proud to announce that they recently received AdvancED Accreditation. Only two early learning centers in the area have received this honor… and both centers are Primrose schools. While visiting the Primrose website at www.primroselavista.com, you can explore their additional accreditations, charitable outreaches, and extensive curriculum. Children at Primrose La Vista spend their days learning in areas such as sign language, engineering, social/emotional skills, math, and creative arts. Theresa shares how her love for children begins with her Primrose La Vista family but extends out into the community, as well. Primrose La Vista annually hosts a Spring Fling fundraiser for The Primrose Children’s Foundation, filled with interactive fun for the children and their families. This year, half of the proceeds will go to the foundation, which supports Reach Out and Read and Save the Children, and half will go to the Tri-City Food Pantry. “Spending time with children is my biggest reward,” Theresa concludes. “I love watching parents and children leave with happy faces at the end of the day.” Primrose School of La Vista, located at 8202 South 97th Plaza, is currently registering for pre-K and kindergarten. Backyard Oasis Build the Best Backyard for You!
By Anne Yankus
Winter is finally over (for real, this time). Naturally, you’ll want to start spending as much time as possible outside. Since it’s 2017, the tired, basic green lawn with a couple of patio chairs is simply not going to cut it. There are so many options out there to make your backyard into a restful oasis with perfect shading, permanent structures, gorgeous water features, outdoor kitchens, and even extra entertainment! To start, there’s no better feeling than walking into your backyard and feeling isolated from the rest of the world. One good way to accomplish this is with privacy plants. Bamboo, tall cacti, boxwood or arborvitae hedgerows, Italian buckthorn, sculpted trees, or vines on trellises are all potential options. Consult with a gardener or landscaper to find out which plants would be the best for your soil, climate, and available space. If you want privacy even when the leaves have fallen, you can still get it done without resorting to a tall, boring fence. Your contractor can show you how to experiment with fencing materials or switch things up with sliding panels and outdoor walls. After you’ve protected yourself from the prying eyes of passersby, you’ll need some shading options to keep you cool during the heat of the day. Many options are available, from outdoor fabric fixed up like a tent, roofline extension, rolldown shades, and gauzy drapes to classic patio umbrellas,
trees and other natural shade, or open pergolas for areas that only need partial shading. What oasis would be complete without water? Adding a water feature to your backyard can really take it that extra mile toward perfection. There are many kinds of water features you can choose to add, like ponds, creeks, birdbaths, outdoor spas (with adjacent outdoor showers), water walls and fountains, and miniature waterfalls. A water feature can be something as small as a birdbath or as large as an outdoor pool. Styles can be sleek and contemporary or rustic and traditional, whatever works best for your yard. Some landscaping companies and contractors specialize in water features; some can create them along with other hardscapes for the yard. Another popular idea lately has been the outdoor kitchen. Why heat up the house with cooking when you can just bring it all outside? Outdoor kitchens can be as simple as a permanently fixed grill or as complex as an entire second kitchen, complete with countertops and range. With an outdoor kitchen, the first priority should be durability. You’ll ›››

want to choose sturdy materials, like granite, soapstone, concrete, or tile. If you go with tile, make a point to pick freeze-proof tiles and use dark-colored grout to save yourself the trouble of having to replace it all after next winter. When in doubt, ask your contractor— he can recommend the best quality material for your price range. Whatever extras you choose to include in your outdoor kitchen, the central focus of outdoor cooking is probably going to be the grill. You can choose from traditional gas grills, charcoal grills, and wood fire grills. These days, you also have new options cropping up, like rotisserie attachments, ceramic cookers, and full-on roasting boxes. Some people want a beautiful backyard so they can enjoy the scenery and the peace and quiet. Others, however, want to enjoy all the same activities they enjoy inside—but they want to take them outdoors, while the weather is cooperative. If that sounds like you, go for it! From family-friendly things like playground equipment and trampolines to outdoor televisions, there are options for everyone on any budget. If you’re considering outdoor games, you might try one you won’t find in everyone else’s yard, like oversized chess pieces to use on a tiled patio or a miniature golf green for putting practice. For movie lovers, an outdoor movie theater can be a real winner, with a projector, screen, and comfortable seating. Fire pits seem like a standard option, but they’re popular for good reason. They can be designed however you like, from a small and moveable fire pit surrounded by chairs to a bricked, built-in fireplace feature complete with table and booth-style seating. Fire pits can be built to any size and space and can accommodate any number of guests or family members. They can also extend the seasonal life of your yard, bringing a little warmth to cooler nights once autumn rolls around again. A backyard oasis perfect for you and your family is within reach. Landscapers and contractors can help you find the best choices for your style and your budget. Spend this summer where you belong—out in your beautiful yard! What Does a Dermatologist Treat?
Knowing When It’s Time to Make an Appointment
By Kylie Gumpert
When you hear the word “dermatology,” you might think first of acne treatments. Dermatologists treat acne, of course, but dermatology goes far beyond just skin care. This field of medicine addresses thousands of conditions that can affect a person’s hair, nails, and the mucous membranes that line the inside of the nose, mouth, and eyelids. Before practicing, a dermatologist goes through extensive schooling. First, she needs to earn a degree as a either a medical doctor (MD) or a doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO) who practices in all areas of medicine, including surgery. She then interns for one year and spends at least three years in a dermatology residency program. Specialized fellowships, which usually last at least one year, allow dermatologists to specialize in more specific areas, like pediatric dermatology, which serves infants and young children, or cosmetic dermatology, which includes a range of cosmetic treatments like chemical peels, hair transplantation, and surgical scar removal. Though dermatologists treat more than acne, this skin condition is still very commonly addressed by dermatologists. Acne results when dead skin cells, oil, and bacteria become trapped under the skin’s surface. This can cause whiteheads, blackheads, or cysts. The condition is often exacerbated by puberty or stress. If over-the-counter products aren’t working on acne, a dermatologist might prescribe retinoid creams (which help prevent hair follicles from clogging), antibiotics, oral contraceptives (for

hormone regulation), or anti-androgen medication. They may also use special tools to physically remove pesky buildup or cysts. Skin cancer is an unfortunately common condition that is treated by dermatologists. It is caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation (that is, the sun). Skin cancer may result in abnormal spots, moles, or patches on the skin. To diagnose, a dermatologist will take part or all of the conspicuous mole or spot and conduct a biopsy. Treatments for skin cancer may include surgery, radiation therapy, or topical medications. Mohs micrographic surgery is a more recent technique that preserves healthy tissue. Instead of cutting out a cancerous mole altogether, very thin layers of tissue are shaved off, one at a time, and examined. Once a cancer-free layer is found, no further layers need to be removed. A good rule for detecting skin cancer is remembering your ABCDEs: Asymmetry (malignant moles are not symmetrical), Border (malignant spots likely have irregular borders), Color (malignant spots are often multicolored), Diameter (malignant spots or moles are usually larger than a pencil eraser), and
www.womensedition.com
Evolving (malignant spots change over time). To prevent skin damage, wear broad-spectrum sunscreen of 30 SPF or higher, cover your skin with clothing and sunglasses, and seek the shade—especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun’s rays are the strongest. Even if moles, skin tags, or other growths are noncancerous, they can still be removed if you find them unsightly. A mole may be cut out from the skin, which a dermatologist will then stitch together. A skin tag might be frozen off, cut off with a scalpel, or burned off. Eczema or atopic dermatitis is a chronic condition, often starting in childhood, in which the skin has trouble retaining water, so it becomes very dry, patchy, and itchy. Allergies and asthma are often linked to eczema. Dermatologists may suggest using antihistamines to help with the itching associated with eczema. For more serious or bothersome cases, they might prescribe topical steroids to reduce inflammation and itching; these should not be applied more than twice a day. To reduce the amount of steroids needed, the dermatologist may also prescribe tar-based cream or gel that helps reduce irritation. Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition in which skin cells are created too quickly; instead of shedding, they pile on top of one another, forming scaly patches. It is most commonly seen on the knees, elbows, and scalp. Prescription topical treatments for milder cases include tar creams or salicylic acid. Psoriasis may also be treated with phototherapy, which uses artificial ultraviolet light to shut down the immune responses that cause skin cells to replicate too quickly. Fungal nail infections can occur on the fingernails but are more common on the toenails because toes are often confined in warm, moist shoes—a perfect breeding ground for fungus. A dermatologist may prescribe an oral antifungal drug. Medicated nail polish or nail cream may be used topically. In some cases, the dermatologist may need to remove the nail, which will grow back. If you have any concerns about your skin, nails, or hair, call your dermatologist. If you don’t already have a board-certified dermatologist, ask your primary doctor for a referral. In particular, if you are worried about a possibly cancerous mole or spot, get in touch with a dermatologist right away. There’s no reason to wait! An Inside Look
Dreams Come True at NAU Surgical Technology, Medical Assisting, RN to BSN, Healthcare Management By Roxy Orr
Are you frustrated that you never took the time to finish your college degree? Do you want to move ahead in your career, but you need a graduate degree to qualify? Do you want to find a university that specializes in providing one-on-one attention to its students? National American University (NAU) is here to help you achieve your educational goals. NAU was founded 76 years ago in Rapid City, South Dakota, as National School of Business. That small college is now a university with over 30 locations in 10 states. The Bellevue campus opened in 2011. NAU provides a personal approach to education for students of any age. They have over 60 degree programs, including associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs. NAU takes great pride in helping active military personnel and their families reach their educational goals. NAU firmly believes that managing a military career with deployments, military trainings, and family does not mean you have to put your education on hold. NAU provides programs and services that fit the lifestyle of active military personnel and their dependents. They may also be able to transfer military training into college credits, allowing students to complete a degree more quickly. NAU also offers military tuition discounts. Recently, I sat down with Amy Vinton, Program Coordinator for the Surgical Technology Program for the Bellevue campus, to learn more about this new degree program. Amy has been with NAU since last June and has 12 years of surgical technology experience, along with invaluable knowledge and proficiency, most recently in trauma surgery. She holds an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in surgical technology and is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration. Her past experience includes working on the cardiovascular/thoracic team at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and she was part of Nebraska Organ Recovery as a tissue coordinator. Amy is passionate about international medical missions. She participated as a team member traveling to developing countries and conducting hernia surgeries, free of charge. She was also a member of a group from Creighton University Medical Center that traveled to Haiti following the 2010 earthquake to assist with disaster relief. Amy wants to highlight one of NAU’s newest programs at the Bellevue campus: the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in surgical technology. A surgical technologist is an allied health professional

who works closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, Program Coordinator registered nurses, and other surgical personnel, for the Surgical Technology Program delivering patient care and assuming patient care responsibilities before, during, and after surgery. The surgical technologist prepares and maintains the sterile field and passes instrumentation, supplies, and equipment to the surgeon and other team members. As part of the surgical team, the surgical technologist must be able to work quickly and accurately, with a commitment to detail. A number of activities must be integrated according to priority when under pressure in stressful and emergency situations. Individuals who practice this profession have a strong desire to help others and make a valuable contribution to society. Honesty and moral integrity are essential in upholding standards for providing safe surgical patient care. Randi-Leray Childs is committed to her career—a career that she pursued during long hours of studying and clinical rotations while a student in the surgical technology program. “As long as I can remember, I’ve been very interested in the human body and health care,” says Randi-Leray, who was first exposed to the operating room while working as a certified nursing assistant (CNA). “Surgery seemed interesting and challenging. The more I learned about it, the more I knew that’s exactly where I wanted to be.” NAU also offers a variety of other healthcare programs, including an online accredited RN to BSN program. Jennifer Svagera directs the medical assisting program at the Bellevue campus. This program prepares students to perform entry-level administrative and clinical functions in outpatient healthcare settings. The university responds to the needs and expectations of the ever-changing healthcare environment. NAU partners with Nebraska Medicine and urgent care clinics in the metro area for the students’ externships and practicum experience. “These institutions compliment NAU for having highly trained students,” notes Jennifer. If you dream of advancing your education, National American University is here to help you make your dream come true. As their motto states, “You deserve an education. We provide the opportunity. That’s the American Way.” For more information, visit their website at www.national.edu or visit their campus at 3604 Summit Plaza Drive, in Bellevue. WE

The New Wall Street
Fringe Players Go Mainstream
By George Morgan
Strictly speaking, Wall Street is two and a half miles of asphalt in lower Manhattan. To most people, however, the term “Wall Street” elicits a much broader image. A partial list of components to Wall Street includes the New York Stock Exchange, the New York brokerage firms, the mutual fund companies, hedge funds, local brokers, and the financial media. To others, the idea of Wall Street includes less tangible concepts, like risk, get-rich-quick, greed, gambling, and big spenders. About 110 million Americans have a relationship with Wall Street through their 401(k) plans. Wall Street is responsible for more than $4 trillion that Americans have in their 401(k)s. For Wall Street, this arrangement is highly profitable. In May of 2015, the Supreme Court of the United States issued a ruling that began to change the relationship between Wall Street and the people who own 401(k)s. The name of the Court’s decision is Tibble v. Edison. In a nutshell, the decision said that the sponsors of 401(k) plans (that is, the employers) are required to provide their employees with plans that charge reasonable fees. The Supreme Court left it up to the lower courts to determine what constitutes a “reasonable” fee. Three different types of service providers are needed to make a 401(k) plan work, and they don’t work for free. First, there is a plan administrator. This person does the bookkeeping and takes care of the necessary government paperwork to maintain the
accounts. The next provider is a broker. This person decides which mutual funds will be made available for the plan participants to invest in and provides investment advice to the participants. Finally, there are the investment companies, who supply the mutual funds themselves. Each one of these service providers charges a fee for their work. In some cases, the employer pays a portion of these fees; in others cases, the entire fee burden is borne by the plan participants. The Tibble v. Edison case only addressed the fees charged by the mutual fund companies. Essentially, participants were being charged a retail rate when they should have been charged a lower, wholesale rate, due to the large number of dollars in the plan. The Court further ruled that the company must pay the court costs for the workers, which amounted to millions of dollars. It didn’t take long before the fees paid to the plaintiffs’ lawyers in the Tibble case got the attention of other lawyers— then, cases involving the fees of other service providers were filed. Most of these early cases were filed against large companies with very deep pockets. For decades prior to Tibble, Wall Street

was the only place employers could go to get the services they needed. Lacking competition, Wall Street charged as much as the market would bear. Commonly, this was around 1.5 percent of the assets in the plan’s account; sometimes, it was as much as 2 percent. Tibble didn’t catch the attention of just the plaintiffs’ lawyers; it also caught the attention of several players on the edge of Wall Street. Discount brokers were not part of mainstream Wall Street because their primary market was people who didn’t want to pay a broker for advice. They soon recognized that they had the technology and personnel and met the regulatory requirements to offer plan administration services at prices up to 80 percent lower than current market rates. This would allow them to take significant market share away from mainstream firms. They accomplished this by charging a flat dollar fee instead of a fee based on a percentage of the assets in a plan. Another group on the Wall Street fringe, the certified financial planners (CFPs), recognized that they met the regulatory requirements needed to select the mutual funds that were made available to plan participants. The CFPs also charged a fixed dollar fee and could significantly undercut mainstream Wall Street. They were able to establish relationships with tens of thousands of people they had never thought of doing business with before. The mutual funds touted by mainstream Wall Street are actively managed and have fees in excess of 0.85 percent. Their cheaper cousins, index funds, charge 0.05 percent and outperform the actively managed funds. During this time of turmoil, the mutual fund providers who specialize in index funds got into a price war of their own and lowered fees on some of their products to 0.02 percent. The Department of Labor estimates that if Americans switched their 401(k) accounts from their current providers to the “New Wall Street” providers, they could save $800 billion over the next decade. What a difference! Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. When a Loved One Develops Dementia Specialized Care for People With Memory Loss By Linda Barnes
When someone exhibits memory loss, we often jump to the fearful conclusion that she has Alzheimer’s disease. However, memory loss or dementia may have many different names and causes. When assisting a family member who is cognitively impaired, it helps to understand some of the terms. First, memory loss is a symptom, not a disease. Dementia is a term for a set of symptoms that often involve memory loss and impaired thinking. Several conditions besides Alzheimer’s can cause dementia, including certain vascular issues or frontotemporal dementia. Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, or dementia with Lewy bodies may be implicated. In the United States, two out of three Alzheimer’s patients are women. One third of people older than 85 years are afflicted, and 5.3 million are currently living with the disease. The good news is that excellent care is increasingly available in most areas, including adult daycares that specialize in memory care, facilities that combine traditional care with memory care, and skilled nursing facilities with memory care units. Some families are able to care for a loved one with memory loss at home. Others may need the support of an adult daycare facility or in-home caregiver. Often, early-stage Alzheimer’s or dementia can be managed at home, but later stages may require moving the affected person to a residential facility that specializes
in memory care. An assisted living facility can provide the services needed during the early stages of dementia. Their standard support for daily living needs, medicine reminders, plus social and fitness activities may be sufficient for mild symptoms. However, Alzheimer’s is progressive. Some medications are able to help temporarily with symptoms, but there is no cure. If your loved one is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, you may want to choose a facility that offers both assisted living arrangements for right now and a special care unit for later, when more specialized memory care will be needed. Determining the level of services your loved one needs (or will likely need in the future) may require some research or professional assistance. Many will opt for in-home assistance, either by a family member or a professional caregiver. It is advantageous for the person with dementia to remain in a familiar environment. However, it is quite a load for the average family caregiver. Many families find that having a professional caregiver visit or taking advantage of a local adult daycare facility a few days per week

provides family members with the break they need. For those considering in-home care, help is available online or from local agencies. A residence will likely need some modifications for safety and easy navigation. In-home, professional caregivers should have experience and training in memory care. Check credentials and references. Visit any adult daycare facilities you are considering, as well. Requirements vary greatly from location to location. A daycare facility should provide meals, activities, and social interaction. They typically offer personal care assistance and accommodate any special needs. Choosing a residential facility requires indepth research. Plan a visit to talk with staff and residents. If possible, visit at meal time. Do residents seem happy? Are they treated with respect? Determine accreditation and/ or certification. Is the staff specially trained in memory care? All aspects of staffing, programs, services, meals, and policies need to be explored. People with dementia can be anxious or confused in new situations, so staff members must be compassionate and experienced in dealing with the challenges of a living adjustment. The resident may be happier and more engaged, in time, than before the move. Good facilities encourage the involvement of family members. A special memory care unit provides highly trained staff, the utmost in safety and security, plus individualized activities adapted to the unique challenges of patients with Alzheimer’s or dementia. It should be home-like, with low noise levels and staff members who are supportive and encourage interaction. Medical professionals attend to health management, which is an important component, particularly with Alzheimer’s and some other forms of dementia. Many local resources can aid and support families with these difficult decisions. A family physician may recommend the level of care needed. The key to successful memory care is personalized services. Memory loss is only a part of the whole picture. Alzheimer’s is a disease of the brain and often brings physical and psychological changes in addition to the cognitive issues. Take heart in knowing that excellent help is available for your loved one. Sources for this article included: www. jointcommission.org, alzheimers.net, and alz.org. WE

Peak Performance
Coping With Menopause Face the Symptoms Head-On
By Loretta McCollum
As sweat runs down your back, you think nothing would feel better than camping out in a walk-in freezer for just a few minutes. Since you don’t have a walk-in freezer, you open up a carton of ice cream and dig in, but then you’re annoyed because you remember the pants you bought last week are one size larger than what you normally wear. Next, you inform your husband that it’s all his fault. (He can’t do anything right lately.) And intimacy? Forget it. You really haven’t felt like yourself, but what does all of this mean? If you’re a woman in your 40s or 50s, it probably means that you’re beginning the notorious roller coaster ride called menopause. Menopause is a normal biological process that occurs when the ovaries stop releasing eggs. Menstruation ceases, signaling the end of the reproductive stage. Some women welcome the fact that they no longer need to worry about becoming pregnant or dealing with a monthly period. On the other hand, many unwelcome physical and emotional symptoms typically go along with menopause. Among these are hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, weight gain, dry skin, low libido, and vaginal dryness. The good news is that there are many ways to help alleviate this discomfort and distress. Since estrogen levels drop during menopause, you may want to talk to your physician about hormone therapy, which is effective in reducing hot flashes, mood swings, and low libido. It’s commonly administered in pill form or through a transdermal patch placed on the lower stomach or buttocks. Estrogen cream can be applied directly to the vagina to help relieve vaginal dryness, as well as discomfort during intercourse. Your doctor may work with a compounding pharmacy to create a medication tailored to your specific needs. Women interested in a natural approach to hormone therapy might consider bioidentical hormones. These hormones are derived from plant sources and are identical in structure to those produced by the body. Some are available commercially, while others are custom-compounded. Advocates of bioidentical hormones believe that they are better absorbed than synthetic hormones and that estrogen levels can be more accurately monitored. Your doctor will determine if this is a viable option for you. Besides hormone therapy, there are several other avenues available to ease menopausal symptoms. Exercising regularly has been shown to improve mood, decrease hot flashes, and combat the weight gain that many women experience. Consider joining a gym or working with a personal trainer. A balanced diet is also important. Caffeine, spicy foods, and alcohol often trigger hot flashes. Try to have caffeine only in the morning. Additionally, menopausal women need 1,200 milligrams of calcium and 600 IU of Vitamin D daily. Consulting with a nutritionist can be helpful in developing a customized dietary plan. Practicing relaxation techniques reduces the
56
June 2017
irritability and tension that the majority of women experience during menopause. Deep breathing and meditation are very calming—just a few minutes each day makes a huge difference. Taking a yoga or tai chi class will help you relax and may reduce the frequency and severity of hot flashes. Getting a massage is another good way to combat stress and soothe physical tension. Eventually, most of those aggravating symptoms will decrease as you enter the post-menopausal stage. Monitoring your health is crucial at this time. Postmenopausal women have an increased risk of certain medical conditions, such as cardiovascular disease. As estrogen levels drop, the risk goes up. Heart disease is the number one cause of death in both women and men. Schedule regular checkups with your doctor, continue to exercise, and eat a balanced diet. Monitor your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Loss of bone mass is a natural part of aging, but women lose bone density rather quickly during this time. This can lead to osteoporosis, a condition in which the bones become weak and brittle, significantly increasing the risk of fractures. Making sure you get enough calcium in your diet can slow down the process. Many women experience urinary incontinence during menopause as the vaginal and urethral tissues lose their elasticity and become dry. Sudden urges to urinate, as well as involuntary urine loss while coughing or laughing, are common. Kegel exercises help strengthen the pelvic muscles, reducing incontinence. A physical therapist who specializes in incontinence can teach you to perform the exercises correctly. Don’t be frightened or anxious about menopause; you will persevere. Many post-menopausal women claim that they feel more comfortable with their bodies and better in touch with their emotions. If you take care of yourself and listen to what your body tells you, the post-menopausal years can be some of your best years ever. The Modern Sewing Revival Bernina Sewing Center of Omaha
By Robyn V Powell
Sewing is experiencing a global revival! People everywhere are flocking to classes, clubs, and events to develop sewing skills. Sites like Pinterest and channels like HGTV have sparked an interest in DIY sewing projects, inspiring people to create their own clothing, pillows, and handbags. From second-graders to seniors, the movement has captured the imagination of newbies and longtime enthusiasts alike—people who are embracing sewing as a means of self-expression and a way to assert their independence. Bernina Sewing Center is Omaha’s destination for sewing enthusiasts and newcomers. It’s a place to check out the newest machines, take a class, and meet people who share a passion for sewing. When husband-and-wife team Keff and Abigail Wilson took ownership of the business in 2014, they knew they had found the perfect fit. Bernina Sewing Center is unique, Abigail explains, in that it is a specialized retailer dedicated exclusively to the crafts of sewing, quilting, and embroidery. Bernina International, named after Mt. Bernina in Switzerland, has been a family-owned business for four generations. Bernina Sewing Center of Omaha has been open for 40 years and is the only authorized Bernina dealer in the city, selling sewing, quilting, embroidery, and serger machines. Sewing machine owners can participate in classes to learn how to use their machines and gain new skills. Bernina Sewing Center even offers classes for children. With its long history of top quality products and service, including in-house maintenance and complete rebuilding of machines, the business has earned strong customer loyalty. “Our goal is to make sewing accessible and fun by providing the products, services, and support that fuel the passion to create,” says Keff. “We love to help people succeed at their favorite sewing and quilting projects.” Sewing basics can be learned in just a few classes, giving participants the practical skills. With additional learning and practice, the creative opportunities are limitless. The wide availability of mass-produced clothing, along with cuts to school programs, have left an entire generation without the benefit of this domestic art. Abigail sees this as a big loss. “Sewing teaches children a number of different skills, such as patience, and offers a creative outlet,” she says. “When you create something yourself, be it a t-shirt or a quilt, the sense of accomplishment is so satisfying. One success leads to another, and there is a kind of independence in knowing you can make something that is both useful and beautiful.” In the past, sewing machines were heavy and
complicated. Today’s machines are easy to use and offer fabulous features that make sewing simpler and more convenient. With advanced technologies built in, sewing machines can now add crystals or intricate embroidery designs to fabric. Many people are interested in quilting, says Abigail, but they feel intimidated. “Our experts walk you through the process and make it fun.” Abigail suggests visiting Omaha’s Annual Quilting Show in June as a source of inspiration. Sewing is a great hobby, combining form and function. It’s creative and productive and can be a valuable social outlet, as well. Many people enjoy sewing in a group, where they can learn from each other and share ideas. It’s about discovering community and selfsufficiency, all in one place. Our grandmothers were onto something when they formed sewing circles, coming together to socialize and create for the good of the community. They understood that the benefits of sewing went beyond the simple creation of a beautiful garment or quilt. Busy hands working together, creating a quilt piece by piece, made way for the higher art of listening as others shared bits and pieces of their lives. Over time, the bonds of friendship and camaraderie were woven together. Abigail and Keff also maintain the Bernina Sewing Center tradition of giving back to the community. They donate time and funding to projects such as charity blankets for children with cancer. They hope to spur the local economy through job creation and have plans in the works to open a second Bernina Sewing Center in Lincoln. For kids and adults alike, Bernina Sewing Center offers opportunities to discover the world of sewing. Kids can enroll in Bernina’s Youth Summer Camp, where participants complete projects such as a candy bag and other fun wearables. For adults, participating in a oneday event such as the Kim Kight Quilt Project (on July 22) is a great way to give sewing a whirl. For anyone who wishes to nurture her creativity and share her passion and projects with others who love to sew and quilt, there’s never been a better time to be part of the modern sewing adventure! Bernina Sewing Center of Omaha is located at 10144 Maple Street, in Omaha. For more information, visit www.berninaomaha.com or call 402-572-1212. WE June 2017

Need a Gift for Dad? Rejuvenate His Car With Professional Detailing By Julie Kuntze
The weather is warming up, summer vacation is on the horizon, neighbors are outside grilling, and Father’s Day is right around the corner. Whether you are shopping for your father, grandfather, spouse, or significant other, finding a gift for Dad is notoriously difficult. This year, consider giving those remarkable fathers the gift of a professional auto detail service. While the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, having your car washed is not the same as having it detailed. A car wash is often a part of the detailing service, but “detailing involves a thorough cleaning and reconditioning of both the interior and exterior of your vehicle,” says the International Detailing Association. Professional detailers are meticulous. They use specialized tools and materials to recondition, restore, and protect their clients’ vehicles. The IDA advises that consumers can “expect that every detail of your vehicle will be assessed and cleaned, including all cracks and crevices.” A basic weekly wash in between detail services can keep pollutants and contaminants at bay. Generally speaking, most professional detailers offer similar services, but there are no industry guidelines that describe what a standard detail should include. According to the IDA, different shops or technicians may vary significantly in their offerings. This may be due to different levels of
training, quality of service, professionalism, and the products and equipment used. That said, an exterior detail typically includes a thorough wash, clay barring, wax, polish, and buff. The windows and trim should also be thoroughly cleaned, along with the wheels and tires, and then dressed appropriately. Repair of scratches or imperfections in the paint job may also be included as part of the service. Interior detailing refers to, of course, the inside of the car: in addition to the seats and floorboards, the technician may also clean the headliner, air vents, doorjambs, steering wheel, speaker grilles, window levers, knobs, and seatbelts. Other specialty services, such as cleaning the engine, may also be available. Many detailers also offer similar services for trucks, boats, RVs, and even airplanes. There are many benefits to having your vehicle professionally detailed. “The most important aspect of auto detailing is your vehicle’s need for protection from the elements,” reports the IDA. Even if your car has a factory clear

coat or “extra-protection package,” these are not permanent solutions; they require routine maintenance for continued protection. While you may be able to do some of this work yourself, a professional detailer already has the best products and equipment to fully accomplish the job, and he knows how to use them. Customers report they appreciate the convenience and peace of mind a professional detailer offers. Regular, high-quality detailing will also raise the value of your vehicle (or reduce the possible penalties incurred when a leased vehicle is turned in). How often you should have your car detailed is largely a matter of personal preference, but experts recommend that all vehicles be waxed at least twice a year. Many clients prefer to have a full detail done more regularly (in between each season, for example), while others rotate interior and exterior details quarterly. Professional detailers may be found as stand-alone operations or as part of a larger car wash or service center. You can search for an auto detailer online, but be sure to ask friends, family, and neighbors for recommendations. Many local car enthusiast groups work with auto detailers, as well, and they might also be able to point you in the direction of a trusted professional. Even the most efficient professional may need several hours to properly detail a car, so many businesses offer pick-up

and delivery services. Other operations may be completely (or partially) mobile, performing the same services on site, using a fully stocked truck with a mounted water tank. To be sure you are working with a reputable company, ask questions before booking an appointment. Visit to observe whether their shop is clean and tidy, as well as what types of other vehicles they are working on. Ask if the business (or technician) is insured and what kind of experience and training their employees have (apprenticeships, ongoing education, and multiple years on the job are all good signs). Inquire about the equipment and products that are used, particularly regarding the safety of any chemicals that might linger inside the vehicle once the detail is finished. Pricing for auto detail work can vary widely, depending on the quality of products used, the experience of the technician, and the current condition of the vehicle. Many shops offer package deals or various specials throughout the year. As Dad gets ready for his summer vacation, get him a gift he’ll appreciate—a professional cleaning for his vehicle. Finally, something he can really use! Sources for this article included: www.the-ida.com, www. checkbook.org, www.carsdirect.com, and www.angieslist.com. WE

The Good Life
The Wine World Tour Enjoying the Fruits of the Vine
By Ashley Anderson
People in cultures all over the world have been drinking wine for thousands of years. It has a large presence in historical culture, literature, and art. Originally thought to have been discovered by eating “soured” grapes and feeling the effects of the fermentation, wine was and still is enjoyed by people of every social class. Wine is considered one of the most common beverages consumed in the world. France and Italy are the two largest producers of wine and wine grapes. In the United States, parts of California (Napa Valley, for example) are also well known for producing wine. Wine is made through a process of fermentation, much like beer, but instead of hops and wheat, it’s made with grapes. The grapes give each wine its distinct flavor. The term “wine varietal” describes how a wine is named, and it can refer to the variety of grape that the wine is made from or the region in which the grapes were grown. This is the name typically seen on the wine bottle. There are thousands of varieties of grapes, and their flavor and quality depend on their growing conditions, including the regional climate. The quality of the grape, of course, directly impacts the quality of the wine produced from it. Following harvest of the grapes, they must be destemmed and crushed or pressed to release the juice. During the fermentation process, the juice is mixed with yeast and sugar—after that, time and temperature are the only remaining ingredients. The fermentation process takes a few weeks, and the wine is then bottled and preserved for retail. Like many things, wine often gets better with age. The “vintage” indicates the age of the wine. The taste of wine changes as time passes because chemical reactions are still occurring inside the bottle. So, why all the hype about some sour grapes in a bottle? It’s because wine is amazing. There are so many different options when it comes to wine that it can please any palate. Most commonly, there are red wines, white wines, and blush or rosé wines. The color of the wine is determined both by the color of the grape’s skin (darker skin, darker wine) and by how much of the skin is used in the fermentation process (the longer the skin is in contact with the wine, the more the color will transfer). Common red wines include cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and pinot noir. The most common white wines include chardonnay, riesling, and sauvignon blanc. Wines can also be sparkling or have flavors added to change the taste of the finished product. Wines are classified not only by varietal and color but also by taste. Wine can taste anywhere on the spectrum from “dry” to “sweet,” and they are often paired with certain types of foods. Dry to medium-dry wines typically pair well with various types of meats. Sweet and sparkling wines are typically enjoyed with dessert. Also, the density of wine refers to how full or
60
June 2017
strong the flavor is. Wine can be classified anywhere from “light” to “full-bodied.” If you don’t know what kind of wine you like, don’t just grab a bottle at the grocery store and hope for the best. Try visiting a local winery! They often have events where guests can sample the wines they are currently producing and take home a bottle of their favorite. They may serve a food pairing with the wines to provide the complete experience. This is a great way to learn about your taste for different types of wines, especially local flavors. You could also participate in a professional wine tasting at a winery or a wine shop or bar. This is a private sampling experience with a wine expert, also known as a sommelier, who will help select wines based on your specified taste. Prefer to try your wine at home? Any local wine shop or wine bar can suggest a bottle to try, especially if you are trying to pair it with a specific meal. You can also try a wine club, where you can order a sampler of wine types to try. Ask at your local wine shop or winery for wine club recommendations—they may even provide this service themselves. Wine clubs may require a certain number of bottles purchased, like a subscription, but it is an excellent way to try wines from various regions. In some cities, restaurants or catering services host wine dinners where they serve a meal and offer wine selections to experience. It’s a fun date night! Anyone can enjoy a great glass of vino—one of the world’s oldest beverages. Trying different flavors or varieties might lead you to a new favorite. Experience all that wine has to offer, at home or in a full-bodied wine environment. Cheers! Sources for this article included: www.winepros.org, www.all-about-wine.com, www.forbes.com. WE

Great Escapes
Rocky Mountain National Park A Four-Seasons Destination
By Jackie Williams
Rocky Mountain National Park is fantastic during every season. Even if you have visited before, you should definitely try going back at a different time of year. This high country playground has so much to offer, with 415 square miles of protected land, 355 miles of hiking trails, and plenty of lakes and mountains. You won’t have to guess why it had over 4.5 million visitors last year and ranks as the fourth-most visited national park. Picture the majestic mountain views on a bluebird day, snowcapped…or bursting with wildflowers…or covered with the fiery colors of fall. People flock to Rocky Mountain National Park to experience nature and enjoy the scenery; to take photos; to see wildlife; to camp, hike, and fish; and even just to find some peace and quiet. Whatever brings you there, it will undoubtedly bring you back. Summer may be the most crowded season at Rocky Mountain National Park, but it’s still a great time to go. Beat the crowds by starting either early or later in the day. The park’s website even has updates (complete with webcams) on parking, trails, and crowds. If you’re heading out this summer, consider August 25th, which is a fee-free day. Rocky Mountain National Park has five campgrounds—one is
open all year. Tent it or bring your RV to enjoy the great outdoors. They offer ranger-led programs in the summer and free shuttles connecting the campground to Bear Lake and Estes Park for great hiking and sightseeing options. Challenge yourself by climbing one of the more than 100 peaks over 11,000 feet. If you’re conditioned for it, try a “fourteener” (that is, a peak above 14,000 feet) like the popular Longs Peak (you’ll have a better chance of spotting bighorn sheep). For a more leisurely pace, there are trails as short as a half-mile loop, quite suitable for young children. You can even go on horseback. Summer is also peak time for trout fishing. Fishermen older than 15 need to have a Colorado fishing license, which can be purchased online through Colorado Parks and Wildlife (cpw.state.co.us). One of my favorite times to visit is during autumn for a gorgeous fall foliage road trip. Stay in a riverside cabin or an intimate bed-and-breakfast in Estes Park, where you won’t miss the plentiful elk sightings…usually right in the front yard or on the street! ›››

Visit a few distilleries or even a meadery to try some local spirits as you shop along the main street. The colors here are breathtaking! Winter is a fantastic time to go to Rocky Mountain National Park, if you enjoy the snow. I always check to see when the Winter Trails events are. These are free snowshoeing and cross-country ski demo events where you can try out the sports for the day. There is always a festival the same weekend to keep you entertained when you’re not out in the snow. If you want to ski or snowboard, drive to Eldora in Nederland. It’s a local mountain with reasonable prices. If you want to go snowmobiling, make sure to stay in Grand Lake—it’s the hands-down snowmobile capital of Colorado! Spring brings some awesome whitewater rafting. The headwaters of the Colorado River start in Rocky Mountain National Park and lead to other rivers. I’ve taken a fun rafting trip that is based and ends in Fort Collins but starts in Estes Park. If the waters are too high for you in the spring, wait until summer for a milder— but still fun—run. What sounds good to you? You can stick to a drive along Trail Ridge Road (when it’s open), which is the highest highway in North America. Stop and take photos at the overlooks and go basically from one end of the park to the other. Or get outside and explore those trails! I enjoy staying in Boulder and taking day trips into the Rockies. The St. Julien Hotel & Spa has an amazing spa, perfect to unwind in after a day of adventure. Make sure your travel agent books you the Boulder Adventure Package! You can enjoy a physical day in the mountains; then, when you’re ready to relax, the St. Julien will be calling you. If you want someone else to do the driving and navigating for you, have your travel agent book a few local tours. Experience an adventure by seeing the Rockies from the back of a horse, by mountain bike, or on an ATV or off-road vehicle. Lower-key tours include private photography or wildlife-viewing tours. Fishing guides can be hired by the day. Visit the Rockies for yourself and see which of its four seasons you prefer. You’ll understand why National Geographic magazine named this park as one of its “best trips in the world.” Sources for this story included: www.nps. gov, www.visitestespark.com, www.colorado. com, cpw.state.co.us, and www.stjulien.com. Enterprising Ideas
Why Go Solar?
For Every Reason Under the Sun By Robyn V Powell
For solar visionary Michael Shonka, going solar has always been the right thing to do. When he began in 1983, the industry was in its infancy—installations were costly and labor-intensive. Over the years, the evolution of the technology has driven costs down and sales up. Homeowners, business owners, and even entire communities are choosing renewable energy sources and looking to experts like Michael at Solar Heat and Electric to guide them. “Homeowners go solar for many reasons,” explains Michael, “but improving the environment and cutting energy costs are the most common.” Unlike conventional power, solar produces no harmful emissions. It’s a clean, renewable process that uses the most natural of all energy sources: the sun. Many people are aware that solar is a great home efficiency upgrade and are eager to reduce their carbon footprint while improving their property’s value. Whether your motivations for going solar are economic, environmental, or personal, solar power can benefit you. One reason to choose solar is to greatly reduce or even eliminate your electric bill. Electric costs make up a large portion of monthly expenses. A system of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels can last more than 25 years, and it’s generating free power that whole time. Even if you consume more power than your system produces, solar will reduce your utility bills. With substantial electricity bill savings, the average American homeowner pays off her solar panel system in eight to 10 years and sees a return on investment (ROI) of 12 percent or more. The federal government, as well as many states, cities, and even utility companies offer incentives to help offset the initial investment costs. Installing a solar panel system is a great way to protect yourself against rising electricity costs and help you better forecast and manage your own expenses. At Solar Heat and Electric, you’re getting professionals with more than 30 years of experience installing panels. Michael believes in an educational approach to help homeowners understand the key factors in solar success. “With each customer, we do a comprehensive analysis to help you decide if you should be tied to the grid or independent of the grid,” he says. Other factors to consider are your energy consumption history and whether your roof and property are suitable for solar panels. Panels are mounted on the roof or on in-ground poles with racks. Once installed, panels require little to no maintenance. Clients who have worked with Michael are pleased with the installation process and the results. “Michael continues to provide information about how the system operates as well as significant education and

outreach to community members who are interested Solar Heat and Electric in learning more about local, clean energy,” reports one client. Another client, a Bellevue resident whose solar panels were installed using the city of Bellevue’s system, says, “Michael was knowledgeable, thoughtful, and priced as agreed. I am very satisfied, and so is Bellevue!” Born in O’Neill, Nebraska, Michael grew up with a keen appreciation for solar energy. His father worked in agriculture and strongly believed that solar energy was the future. “His belief influenced my decision to enter the field,” Michael explains. What began as a start-up business eventually outgrew his garage space. Michael bought Myers Electric, a retail shop that specializes in repairing small electrics like mixers and shavers. Acquiring Myers Electric gave Michael the space he needed and complemented his business. Like solar, the repair side of the business is about sustainability— through preservation. Michael’s hope is that Nebraska will continue to move in the direction of renewable energy. Renewables bring clean energy, protect the environment, and create jobs for young people who might otherwise leave Nebraska. “There’s a strong economic argument to be made for moving to solar energy,” says Michael. “Nebraska is not a fossil fuel state, so 98 percent of our energy is imported. Placing renewable energy in more small towns means more money will stay in our local economies.” While Nebraskans understand the importance of soil and water in our agrarian state, there’s an underappreciation for our wind and solar potential. The raw resources (wind and sun) are plentiful in Nebraska—we just need to tap them. Michael encourages us to consider solar for our homes and businesses and also get the conversation going about placing solar in our communities. “Programs that can adapt to individual, family, community, and state needs can be an economic driver that benefits everyone,” he notes. Choosing solar is an investment in the environmental and economic health of our own families and future generations of Nebraskans. The Green Thumb
Garden Envy When Jealousy Rears Its Ugly Head By Sharon Knierim
What a surprise to find myself feeling jealousy and a little bit of resentment while visiting a plant nursery last week. Who, me? And why would I feel such a strange emotion about my most beloved activity? I suppose all of us feel that little nagging and gnawing from time to time, when someone else is in the spotlight. Was that what was happening? I was taken aback by my own pettiness. Perhaps it was time to reevaluate and take a good long look at what was going on. Here’s the scoop on my descent into a somewhat nasty moment: As I was examining tomato plants in a local plant nursery, I overheard a woman ask another woman about planting strawberries. Let’s call them Joan and Mary. Joan had asked Mary about how to successfully grow berries in pots. Mary jumped right in there, being helpful and enthusiastic. In less than two or three minutes, she had provided Joan with the lowdown on the selection, planting, and care of those berries for the next two years. Just as I would have done, if Joan had asked me…but she had asked Mary, instead. Now, really, there should be no reason for resentment when a seasoned and experienced gardener shares her expertise with a new gardener. What in the world was going on in my head? (Obviously, not much.) I suppose we all get surprised by our own
feelings now and again. After Joan and Mary parted ways, I felt a degree of shame. Why would I resent another gardener’s expertise? It felt as though I should spend some time in the confessional. Finally, I chalked it up to just being human. After all, it is tough being a know-it-all; by being that way, I may have inadvertently set myself up for this momentary setback. Since my moment of shame, I’ve thought about how I might have responded better to that moment. Although gardening can be a singular activity, is a pastime to be shared with and by others who share the same interest. Gardening is about success and sharing. It’s about encouraging others to immerse themselves in and love nature

while garnishing wonderful results in growing plants. Well, now that I have my head on straight, everything is back to normal. I guess we all have a moment of weakness from time to time. Envy isn’t all bad, though, if it leads us down a more pleasant and constructive path. If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, I am guilty. What gardener hasn’t seen a planting or a grouping she loved and then incorporated that into her own gardening scheme? Envy can certainly be a motivator, but hopefully it takes on a more positive form. If we love something in someone else’s garden, there is absolutely nothing wrong with hoping for the same effect or beauty in our own environment. Of course, the same is true when we hear one gardener offering advice and wisdom to another gardener. If you are visited by that ugly devil called envy or his cousin, jealousy, refocus those feelings into a positive force. This negative energy we sometimes feel can certainly be put to good use. Why waste time feeling bad? Instead, get out there and pull weeds, move plants, or trim and deadhead what is already in the garden. You’ll feel at least 100 times better, and your entire attitude will be much healthier. Your garden will look better, too. Remember, most successful gardens are the result of pre-planning. Gardens don’t just happen unless they’re planted by Mother Nature herself. Don’t allow yourself to worry about what is going on in the garden. If you find your resolve and patience wearing thin, take a bit of a recess. Nothing done today can’t wait until tomorrow. Pace yourself. It’s probably true that when we become too tired or overwrought, we make it easier for unpleasant feelings to surface. Pushing ourselves past our realistic limits is certainly when we make most of our mistakes. If you become cranky and out of sorts, step away and take a breather, or put your tools away and find a better time to perform gardening tasks. Well, now that I’ve experienced my little moment of pettiness and come to understand what was really happening, I’m ready to jump into the garden with a smile on my face. I hope that you are, too. Remember to have fun in the garden this summer! Editor’s Note: Sharon Knierim has been a Master Gardener since 2003 through Iowa State University. She lives on a small farm in western Iowa and looks forward to sharing her passion for gardening each month with her green-thumbed reader friends. WE

Matching Owners to Pets The Perfect Pet for Every Lifestyle By Kathy Glow
The decision to share your life with a pet is a no-brainer for some people. Pets provide unique physical and emotional benefits to their owners, often bringing them great joy and happiness. However, pet ownership can be a big commitment, so it is important to consider several factors about your life before deciding what type of pet should share it with you. First, examine your schedule and evaluate how much time you have to devote to a pet. Next, determine the type and size of pet you are able to care for. Finally, consider your budget and living space. Some pets come with big price tags—not only for their purchase, but also for their care. You should research a pet’s needs before purchasing or adopting. If you want a pet to enjoy an active lifestyle with you and you have plenty of room, a dog is a very popular choice. Dogs are social and friendly, and many breeds can go for a run or to the park with you. Dogs require serious commitment in terms of time and money. Keep in mind that dogs may live up to 15 years. If you enjoy the athleticism it takes to participate in a sport with your animal, equestrianism may be an excellent activity for you. Keep in mind that if you don’t happen to have the space to board a horse, you’ll need to pay for it to live elsewhere. Some horse breeds live up to 30 years, so horse ownership is a long commitment. Horses also need regular grooming, exercise, and medical care. If you enjoy a more mellow lifestyle but still want a pet to cuddle, consider a cat, rabbit, ferret, guinea pig, or hamster. These engaging, social, and intelligent creatures require love and attention and may prefer a quieter household with no other pets or children. Cats and even some rabbits can be litter-trained. Ferrets, guinea pigs, and hamsters need a clean cage as well as time outside of it to roam and explore, so there is still a notable time commitment in owning them. All of these animals are safest when kept indoors, making them perfect pets for apartment dwellers or those with smaller living spaces. Birds are gorgeous and wondrous creatures to gaze upon in the wild, but owning one requires major commitment. Not only do birds need a lot of space to spread their wings and fly, but they need very special diets, as well, which may take time and money to prepare. Birds (particularly parrots) are messy and need some form of entertainment, like toys or contact with other birds. Birds are flock animals, so they are happier in pairs. Some breeds can live up to 50 years or more, making them a true lifetime commitment. If you want a low-maintenance pet to acclimate your children to pet ownership, try fish, snakes, lizards, or turtles. The time commitment to these animals is minimal—a short time every day for feeding and about an hour a week to clean tanks or cages. They are fun to

watch and are a good way to learn about animals, but they don’t need a lot of snuggling, nor do they require grooming. Depending on state or city regulations, you can own pot-bellied pigs, goats, or other livestock-type animals. These animals need specialized care, food, and space outside. Many also prefer the companionship of a similar animal. If you desire to own any type of exotic animal, check local regulations first. For many elderly people, a companion animal is exactly what the doctor ordered. A pet can have many benefits, such as combating loneliness and lowering blood pressure. If you are still active, a mature, welltrained dog might be a good fit. For those who aren’t as active, a cat to curl up with on the couch is ideal. Even those who are essentially bedridden might desire a fish at which to gaze. No matter the pet, elderly owners should make pet ownership easier on themselves—keeping food and water bowls elevated so they are easier to reach, for example. The last important aspect of pet ownership to consider is who will care for your pet when you are at work or traveling. Many pet store chains offer pet sitting, and pet spas with overnight stays are growing in popularity. Your veterinarian might have names of qualified pet sitters, as well. To find the perfect pet, you can browse pet stores, visit your local Humane Society, attend adoption events, and talk to pet-owning friends and neighbors about their pets. It is important to spend time around any animal you are considering bringing into your family. Positive Perspective
Doubt, Fear, and Worry Are They Controlling You? Are you tuning in to your truest self? You know when you have those wonderful, flawless instances where you feel like everything is going just perfectly? Those are the moments when you are truly attuned to your truest self, your best self. Those are the moments we need to find more often. Yet most of us have more moments that are just ok or filled with doubt, fear, and worry. “Love is what we were born with. Fear is what we learned here.” —Marianne Williamson So if we are all born filled with love, how do we end up at this place? One word: momentum. You see, no matter how perfect our day is going, momentum is very powerful and can change things in almost an instant. If you focus on something that does not feel good or experience some sort of physical or emotional discomfort (for even a short 15 to 20 seconds), the next thought will come; more than likely, it will also be along that same path of something you don’t want. If you stop for a moment, you will realize how powerful momentum can be. The challenge is turning that momentum around. This can be difficult to overcome because everywhere you turn—television, radio, newspapers—you can find negative stories. As a society, we seem to have all jumped on the negative train;

these downbeat thoughts and actions are just going to increase and continue until we make the decision that we want something different and something better. Stop for a moment and examine your own daily thoughts, your own personal headlines. How many times do you make statements such as, “I am sick,” “I am broke,” “I hate my job,” and what happens? We get more illness, debt, and challenges. We have mistakenly taken to the idea that in order to get something, we need to struggle. We tend to think that things shouldn’t be easy. That thought is absolutely wrong! “You’re picky about the car you drive. You’re picky about what you wear. You’re picky about what you put in your mouth. We want you to be pickier about what you think.” —Abraham My request of you: Be pickier. Tomorrow morning as you are just waking up, start your day thinking about something positive. This can be the easiest time of day to start, before the day’s events get in your way. Spend just a moment focused on something that makes you happy and see if you can start gaining some momentum on positive thoughts, and then see where your day leads. Your thoughts truly are in your hands. WE
