Let’s Have Some FUN! Points of Interest

There is something about spring that brings me a tremendous amount of joy. I see the light at the end of the tunnel. I give myself a big pat on the back because I have survived another Nebraska winter. Even if we get a spring blizzard, I rationalize that this, too, shall pass—and quickly! I’m happy…I’m having fun! I have a feeling that “having fun” is not at the top of most of our lists of things to do, which begs the question: Why not? Let’s face it, most of us don’t bounce out of bed in the morning and declare: “This is going to be a fun day!” We wake up with our normal “to do” list. Work, kids, chores…let’s just make it through another day. After all, who has time for fun? Well, I do. I hope you decide that you do, too. Without fun in our lives, our stress levels go up. We become grouchy. If we are not having fun, we are not fun to be around. We become isolated. At the very least, the only people who will hang around us are those people who are committed…family and coworkers/employees. They can’t leave! Making a decision to have fun when I wake up in the morning has become my mantra for 2018. At my house, at work, when doing chores, when driving down the freeway. I am going to have fun. How? By seeing only those things that feel good when I’m looking at them. By being appreciative of every blessing that I have in my life. By choosing to watch a comedy on Netflix instead of a drama. By finding every opportunity to laugh. To be thankful. To be in the moment. To wake up in the morning and affirm that I’m going to have fun today! I will admit that this manifestation is still a work in progress. Some days have gone better than others. The great news is: I AM HAVING MORE FUN! A little bit more, every single day. I challenge you all to try this for 21 days. When you first wake up in the morning, begin by recognizing everything in your life that you are grateful for. This will start the wheels turning to head your day in the right direction. Set your alarm for 15 minutes earlier so you have time to actually FEEL everything that is so great in your life. When you bounce out of bed, your attention will be focused on the positive instead of on the drudgery. Let me know how this works! Email me at publisher@wew3.com. It’s working for me. I know it will work for you! Let’s have fun. We’ll talk next month!

25 Years of Tommy Bahama Bradley O’Brien Talks Success Secrets

By Holly Bell

Iconic island lifestyle brand Tommy Bahama is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2018! Few brands can brag of ongoing fabric innovation, inspiring creativity in design, and ongoing customer satisfaction like Tommy Bahama. The brand offers more than just amazing apparel with comfort, ease, and style. It is also a great resource for beach gear like beach chairs, umbrellas, and hammocks. My favorite is a pop-up sun shelter with easy setup and portability—it’s perfect for those sunny days at the beach, park, or backyard, when there is not a tree in sight. If you love to entertain islandstyle, visit Tommy Bahama online at tommybahama.com for something fun and different in home accessories. When I was checking out the new Island Active apparel, I was impressed to learn that the fabric is breathable and fast-drying, has excellent UV protection, and resists damage from chlorine and salt water. It is also designed for maximum mobility and comfort, which makes it a perfect addition to my workout wardrobe, and it’s accommodating by the pool or at the beach, making this multi-use clothing essential when packing for a trip. Tommy Bahama also has a chain of restaurants that pay homage to the easygoing lifestyle and feature fresh seafood, local produce, innovative new dishes, and fabulous desserts. I vow to visit the next time I am near one of their 18 international locations. Recently, I was delighted to interview Bradley O’Brien, the executive vice president of design and product development at Tommy Bahama. She was kind enough to answer some of my questions about Tommy Bahama. Holly Bell: Can you describe the typical Tommy Bahama customer? Bradley O’Brien: We are so fortunate to have an incredibly passionate guest. In terms of demographics, they are typically 40–65 years old and live in or enjoy traveling to sunny locales. They truly live the island life! Holly: Does your spring collection have a predominant theme? Bradley: We start each season by picking an exotic location for the design teams to get inspired. For spring 2018, we chose Palm Beach, home to legendary resorts, exquisite mansions, and historic landmarks. It was here that “winter” became a verb. Inspiration came from the crisp black-and-white striped awnings that grace Worth Avenue, the punchy pink of the ubiquitous bougainvillea, and the bright green of the perfectly manicured privet hedges. Holly: How does Tommy Bahama stay current in a challenging and competitive marketplace? Bradley: We have a world-class team of designers! They study the macro trends in the market, keenly understand the complete landscape, attend all relevant trade shows, and have a deep understanding of our guest. They use the brand as a filter for their research to ensure we deliver a great product that will delight our guest in its quality, relevance, and beauty. Holly: What pieces would you recommend for a new Tommy Bahama customer? Bradley: In men’s, we have expanded on our offering of Island Zone to include silk camps, polos, sweaters, and bottoms. We’ve added more fabrications of our classic camp silhouettes to include cottons and denim-friendly knits. We’ve recently launched a new chino program called

the Boracay, which is destined to become his go-to khaki of 2018. The fit, comfort, and hand are fantastic. In women’s, we’ve taken a page from the success of the men’s Island Zone and now offer polos, skirts, and dresses with temperature regulation. We have incredible in-house art, which adorns our dress collections, and great resort essentials— everything she’ll need. We recently launched Island Active, an exciting extension to our women’s swim. It’s a collection of activewear that functions in and around the water. Because we are celebrating our 25th anniversary, we have some great limited edition collectible products for our die-hard fans. Holly: When I think of Tommy Bahama, I think of vacation. Is that your prime market, or can Tommy Bahama be an integral part of an everyday wardrobe? Bradley: Absolutely! We want to be top of the mind with our guests when they are thinking about packing for a vacation, but our brand is very versatile. You can live the island life every day, even if you’re at the office, daydreaming about an unforgettable tropical vacation. Our colors and prints instantly make you feel happy, and the quality and hand of the fabrics are so comfortable, they feel like familiar friends. From now on, when I think of Tommy Bahama, I will not only think of vacation. I will think of the brand as something to wear at the gym, in the office, to the store, or just for fun! Wearing Tommy Bahama makes you feel like you are on vacation whenever you look into a mirror! Editor’s Note: Holly has been in the fashion industry for over 30 years as a buyer, boutique store owner, visual merchandiser, and fashion show producer. She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE

Spring Winds, Thinking of Gardens…Let’s Eat! By Kate Beiting

Omaha Reubens Warm several slices of thinly sliced corned beef (or turkey). Spread mayo or Thousand Island dressing on top of good rye bread (or sauerkraut bread; see page 11). Add the warmed meat, the amount of drained sauerkraut you desire, and several slices of Swiss cheese. Top with another slice of bread. Lightly butter the outsides of the rye bread. Toast in a skillet (press down with a spatula while toasting) until sandwiches are crisp and lightly browned. Serve with dill pickles and olives. Shirred Eggs Butter ramekins (1 for each person). Pour 1 teaspoon of cream into each ramekin, then break 1 egg into each ramekin. Salt and pepper to taste. To each ramekin, add 1 teaspoon of freshly snipped chives and 1 teaspoon of grated Parmesan cheese. Place ramekins on a cookie sheet and bake at 325 degrees for 15 minutes. Allow several minutes setting time after you remove them from the oven. Serve with sliced ham, bacon, and fruit. Baked Fish Rinse 4–6 pieces of cod (or any white fish), pat dry, and put

Add other spices, if desired. Top with one-half cup of crushed corn chips. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes, until the fish flakes. Serve as fish tacos or with sour cream and avocado. Meat and Beer Stew (This can be adapted for instant pot.) Cut a 2-pound chuck roast into small bites. Sauté the beef, along with one cut-up onion, until browned. Place the beef and ›››

onion (and the juices) into the slow cooker. Add 2 chopped celery stalks, 2 peeled and chunk-cut carrots, 2 Tablespoons of tomato paste, 3 peeled and chunk-cut parsnips, and 3 or 4 cut-up potatoes. (Alternative: Cook the potatoes separately at the end and serve them mashed.) Add seasonings like salt, pepper, and thyme, to taste. Pour in 3–4 cups of beef broth and 1 pint of stout beer (like Guinness). Cook on low for 8 hours or on high for 4 hours. Traditional Corned Beef and Cabbage (This can be adapted for instant pot.) Empty a packaged corned beef, juice, and spice packet into a large soup pot (add more “pickling spices,” if you want to). Fill the pot with about 4 cups of water, just to the top of the corned beef. Add a large cut-up onion, several chunk-cut carrots, and a bay leaf or two. Bring to a boil, then turn down the heat and simmer for 3–4 hours. During the last 30 minutes of cooking, add 5–6 washed but unpeeled red potatoes. During the last 10 minutes of cooking, add a head of chunk-cut cabbage. (If you’re out of room, you can cook the potatoes and cabbage separately. If you do, add some of the corned beef cooking water for flavor.) Remove the corned beef, let it rest a minute, and then slice thinly against the grain. Serve with a homemade horseradish mustard (mix sour cream, horseradish, and yellow mustard). Sauerkraut Bread Mix the package of flour and yeast from a box of hot roll mix. Add 1 teaspoon of caraway seed. Stir in 1 cup of drained sauerkraut, 1 cup of hot water, 2 Tablespoons of soft butter, and 1 egg. Use a dough hook to mix for 2–3 minutes. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured counter and knead for 4–5 minutes. Put the dough

into a greased loaf pan, cover, and let rise for 30 minutes. Brush with an egg wash and bake at 375 degrees for 35–45 minutes. Cool for 15 minutes in the pan, then remove from pan and continue to cool. Mamie’s Irish Soda Bread Presoak three-fourths cup of raisins in hot water to plump them. Mix together 2 cups of flour, one-third cup of sugar, one-half teaspoon of salt, one and one-half teaspoons of baking powder, and one-half teaspoon of baking soda. Add the plumped raisins. In another bowl, beat 1 egg and add two-thirds cup of buttermilk and 1 Tablespoon of melted butter. Mix just to moisten. On a lightly floured counter, knead lightly and shape into a plump disk. Cut a cross on top and brush with an egg wash. Place on a buttered cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes. Cool on a wire rack. Great for toast! St. Patrick’s Day Celebration Bundt Cake (This recipe is from the ’70s!) Mix together a box of yellow or white cake mix (no pudding added), a small box of instant pistachio pudding, 4 eggs, one-half cup of orange juice, one-half cup of water, and one-half cup of vegetable oil. Mix well. Remove one cup of cake batter and add onehalf cup of chocolate syrup to it (along with an optional splash of Irish coffee liqueur). Mix well and set aside. Liberally grease a Bundt-style cake pan. Pour half of the cake mix in the cake pan, add the chocolate syrup, then add the rest of the batter. Run a knife through the batters several times to marble. Bake at 350 degrees for 50–60 minutes (or until a toothpick comes out clean). Glaze with a ganache or a greentinted confectioner’s sugar glaze. WE

fia + belle Simple Elegance for Everyone By Cynthia Jeffrey

Some people just have the eye. They innately know what items people will gravitate toward, and they find a way to offer them at unbelievable prices. When those people expertly combine boho with chic and offer a beautiful environment in which to browse, you have a winning store. You have fia + belle. Fia + belle is a gorgeous store in Fremont, Nebraska, located in a historical building just off Main Street. Before they moved here a few months back, they took the time to restore the space to its original status. The outcome is an incredible mix of brick walls, high ceilings, and beautiful floors. Because fia + belle is a family-owned and -operated business, guests may find themselves greeted by a variety of people of all ages. While Sandra Murray technically runs the store, she works closely with her husband and children. Each family member has an important role in making the boutique a success, which adds to the overall charm of the establishment. While they may advertise as a great place to find delightful housewares, fia + belle is so much more than that. You can also find boutique clothing that keeps up with and ahead of current trends as well as accessories that will help you make an individual statement. Sandra explains that the family at fia + belle wants to create a comfortable atmosphere for each shopper, and each staff member will provide personal attention to make that happen. With only a small number of the same items in stock, you are guaranteed to walk out of the store with something unique. Sandra and her daughters take the time to try on every piece of clothing in the store, so they are prepared for each person who comes in looking for something special. With a quick glance, they can pick out something that will flatter your body type and enhance your beauty. Additionally, shopping within the store is stimulating for your senses—they coordinate the overhead music with the scents they choose to display. Reviews seem to be incredibly positive in regard to both staff and the available stock. Customer Debra reviews, “I love this store! High quality, unique clothing and furniture at reasonable prices. Very warm and friendly staff, too!” Britni is also pleased with her experience at fia + belle. “I have nothing but praise,” she shares. “The store is gorgeous. Beautiful housewares and clothing for sale. Then, top it off with the most friendly staff I have encountered in a store in a long time. I will definitely be back. Fremont is lucky to have this gem!” Sandra supports local artists in the decoration of the store. The walls may appear to be papered, but

that detail is actually done with pen by Owner Sandra local artist Anthony Brown. He also provides the murals Murray (right) and you may see on canvases throughout the space and on her daughter, Kelley the streets of downtown Fremont. If you find a piece that you absolutely love but are unsure how to incorporate it into your own home, Sandra would love to help you! Simply bring in a photo of your space and let her do her magic! Sandra, Kelley, or Brianna would also love to help you choose something special for a loved one—all you have to do is ask. Make sure to allow yourself time to wander throughout the store, as you may overlook something on your first pass. Take a moment to walk back through slowly, paying close attention to what catches your eye. You’ll notice that each area of the store has its own unique flow. Farmhouse chic is intermixed with classic items, which helps customers see how to highlight specific pieces. Don’t “The store is gorgeous. forget the basement, Beautiful housewares and which is designated for antiques of every clothing for sale. Then, top design. The next time you’re in Fremont, stop in for a spell. Fia + belle is located at 108 East 6th Street, in historic downtown, and their phone number is 402-699-6681. You will be drawn in by the welcoming window staging, which continues throughout the ample space. Be prepared to be impressed. I witnessed a continuous stream of people entering and exiting the store during my visit, and each one left with a smile on her face. WE

By Sharon Knierim

In October of 2017, I received a damning diagnosis of lung cancer. I was pretty sure that was the end of the world— at least, the end of my world. When we receive such devastating news, all kinds of thoughts rush through our brains. Rather than being scrambled, though, our thoughts seem suddenly and entirely focused. Everything that is important and dear seems to be centered. Our lives are about to change, but how? We know that what we do next is going to be very important and will probably affect the lives of everyone around us. Friends and readers, if you have received such news or moved through the dark and scary tunnel of this type of unknown, you will already know what I am about to tell you. When there is a health crisis or emergency, everyone in the immediate circle joins together. We all share our experiences, and most of those shared experiences are well-intended and inspiring. Having or finding a good support system is paramount. If, like me, you are fortunate to have loyal friends and family members who are willing to take the journey with you, that is an absolute blessing. Facing such a challenge alone is unspeakable and, hopefully, avoidable. If you do not have a firm support system or a network

of people and resources, find one as soon as possible. Today, more than ever, people are willing to shoulder burdens and assist in bringing in all kinds of resources. Whether people show up at the front door with a pie or a casserole or bring the mail in from the mailbox or drive us to and from doctor appointments, don’t forget to allow these earth angels to participate. It is important for you, but it is also a way for these helpers to show how much they care. Some friends are willing to abide your perhaps less than cheerful companionship. They will sit for hours, talking about everything or nothing, or will endure long telephone conversations as they apply their magical skills at both lifting your mood and providing information.

As you move through a diagnosis and treatment, remember: In almost every case, there are so many options available to doctors, technicians, and, of course, patients. As patients, we have rights and responsibilities. Do not be shy about asking questions. If you don’t ask, nobody will know that you are wondering. This is, of course, a good time to have a pencil and tablet ready to write down all your questions and record the answers you get when you talk to medical specialists. I have to admit that I have always preferred going to the doctor by myself. I have never enjoyed an audience sitting in the examination room, and I still don’t. However, this is no time to quibble about privacy. If you have someone you trust (and this need not necessarily be a close relative), invite that person to accompany you to doctor visits, tests, and checkups. In the end, you will be glad that you did. After all, two brains are better than one— especially if one of those brains is yours! My family and I have met what seems like the entire population of medical staff members and are extremely grateful for their candor and knowledge. If, during a journey such as this, you are less than satisfied with your medical professionals for any reason, go find a second opinion. You are, after all, the most important person in this situation. Information gathering is very important to many patients as we move toward decision-making and planning for the future. Of course, this information gathering works both ways. Do not withhold information about yourself, your condition, personal and family history, or habits from medical staff members. Like you, they need all the information possible to provide the best treatment possible. Now, it is early spring. During the past few months, I have learned much as a patient. Not only have I been blessed with wonderful medical treatment from some fabulous professionals, but I have learned what I already knew but was not focusing on. Life is precious, and the purpose of life seems to be joy. Let yourself enjoy the best that life has to offer. Remember, it’s all just right there. Sometimes, you have to look a bit for it, and, sometimes, you have to grasp it, but the treasure that is life and those who are worthy of being our greatest treasure are certainly wonderful. I don’t know about you, but I intend to have a wonderful life. I hope you do, too. WE

Is Periodontal Disease Invading Your Mouth? Get the Right Treatment at Specialty Dental Care By Jackie Byers

Specialty Dental Care is the office of Dr. Tim McVaney. He is a periodontist, treating what he refers to as “the foundation: damage to jaw bones, roots, gums, and teeth.” This is vital treatment! “Nearly half of adults and 70 percent of people over age 65 have some form of periodontal disease,” Dr. McVaney points out. This can lead to inflammation, pain, and, ultimately, tooth loss. As if that’s not bad enough, problems in the mouth can lead to problems in other parts of the body. Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria in your mouth. One difficulty in treating periodontal disease is the particular virulence of the bacteria that cause it. Your immune system sends white blood cells to fight bacterial infection, but some bacteria feed on the white blood cells. Though regular cleanings and brushing twice daily with a soft brush should keep these bacteria at bay, Dr. McVaney explains, that’s not always the way it happens. For example, if your ability to brush your teeth properly is impaired by an injury to the arm or hand or by a disabling stroke, the bacteria may run rampant. Of course, simple inattention to proper brushing habits can also lead to gum disease. The early stage of periodontal disease is called gingivitis, and it’s basically an inflammation of the gums around the base of the teeth. This can (and should!) be professionally treated, as reversal of gingivits is possible. To combat periodontis, Dr. McVaney often recommends treatment every 90 days. Fortunately, the capable staff at Specialty Dental Care are ready to provide this treatment. Dr. McVaney is assisted by Kayla, Sandra, and Victor. Dental hygienists Heather and Shelli also provide patient care. Kris McVaney (Dr. McVaney’s son) is the office manager; Mary, the financial coordinator, handles insurance issues; and Teresa is the assistant manager/patient coordinator. Dr. McVaney himself has been in the dental industry for more than 40 years. Over the years, some patients have presented him with extremely challenging problems. His goal is always to restore the patient’s smile. He recalls one patient whose issues led Dr. McVaney to Texas to work with a tissue transplant specialist. “This technique involves using tissue from the soft palate to repair and restore damaged gums and cover exposed roots. Because this gets a blood supply to the gum more quickly, healing is more rapid.” “The image of teeth in a glass overnight is out,” he continues. “Seniors usually take better care of themselves, including their teeth, but I have treated some who had heart-wrenching problems.”

18

March 2018

“One patient, disfigured in an accident when they were a teenager, came to me in pain. Their injuries made them standard of care poor. We surgically changed their bite and inserted a temporary bridge while we prepared their dental implants. They were thrilled when they examined the results. They could finally smile again! This made the whole team smile.” Dr. McVaney recalls the youngest patient he has ever treated: a nine-year-old girl who was tongue-tied, limiting tongue movement from her palate. “For one so young, she was a trooper. The only drawback was her extreme fear of needles. The surgeries she needed required injections. I grinned and said, ‘We can help you, but needleless to say—’ I got no further. She sat up like a shot and looked ready to bolt. We calmed her down. The young lady is still in treatment for cranial, facial, and orthodontic work, but she could become a public speaker. I became more careful about my puns.” Dr. McVaney has a treasure trove of stories about patients he has helped. “I once treated a diabetic patient who was losing eyesight. The physician feared the condition would worsen, as medications were ineffective and the condition continued. We had to extract some teeth, clean up her periodontal disease, and install some dental implants. The results were satisfying: five healthy years.” “We even have had a tag-team treatment. A young man with plenty of confidence had periodontitis. After we treated that and set him on a healthier course, he brought his girlfriend in. She looked panicked from the start. I think she knew she needed a lot of work. We did extractions, bone grafting, and implant placement. Her smile returned, and it was a beaming one.” In conclusion, Dr. McVaney wants to warn us that periodontal disease is easy to overlook. “Periodontitis is painless. Initially, you may notice a bit of blood when you brush. Your gums may appear slightly puffy. Don’t wait until it progresses any further. The longer you wait, the harder it is to treat.” Specialty Dental Care is located in the L Street Marketplace, at 12242 K Plaza, Suite 113. Fresh Concept

Feeling Pinched? Regain Your Mobility With Physical Therapy By Kylie Gumpert

When your body doesn’t move the way it should, it can impact almost every aspect of your life. It can turn simple, daily tasks into frustrating, painful, or even impossible challenges. Car accidents, sports injuries, surgery, cancer treatment, repetitive strains, and pregnancy are some of the many circumstances that can limit mobility. When restricted movement is getting in the way of your daily life, it’s time for professional intervention to help you get your life back. Physical therapists treat people of all ages by creating customized courses of physical exercises and activities that restore function, movement, and health. Physical therapy can relieve pain, heal injury, restore independence, and promote a life of wellness beyond the initial therapy. While some of these therapists work in hospital settings, the majority provide care outside of the hospital—in their own private practices, in patients’ homes, in schools or workplaces, or even in fitness centers. Before developing an individual treatment plan, a physical therapist first needs to take some steps that help her to identify whatever is causing the patient’s pain or discomfort or is impacting the patient’s ability to move freely. The first step in this process is gathering background information that helps the therapist better understand her patient’s predicament, including the patient’s medical and surgery history, habits, work and living environment, current level of functioning, and any medications she is taking. After gathering patient history, the therapist will conduct some physical tests that help her understand the patient’s current range of motion and pain level. The therapist will also identify any irregularities in how the patient walks (known as gait dysfunction). If the patient is recovering from a specific injury, the therapist will check to see how the injury is healing. Depending on what the therapist finds, additional tests such as an MRI may be required to help determine whether a mobility issue is strictly physical or is the result of a neurological disorder. Once she has a better understanding of what her patient needs, the physical therapist will develop her patient’s recovery plan and get started. Therapy sessions vary depending on the patient’s physical issues but might include the therapist physically moving or stretching a limb, massaging muscle, or using electrotherapy, ultrasound, heat, or ice to manipulate movement and ease discomfort. Along with in-person sessions, patients may also receive exercises and activities they should do outside of their scheduled appointments to improve mobility. Interestingly, physical therapy isn’t only a reactive process. Research from the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery shows that proactively participating in just two physical therapy sessions before undergoing total knee or hip replacement surgery reduces necessary postoperative care by about 30 percent.

20

March 2018

Pilates, a system of exercises that improve flexibility and strength, is another proactive way to maintain health and movement. For example, physical therapy patients with multiple sclerosis may participate in Pilates exercises that help strengthen their core and improve their stability. According to the American Physical Therapy Association, there are 11 specific areas in which physical therapists may practice. These consist of acute care, aquatics, cardiovascular and pulmonary, geriatrics, home health, neurology, oncology, orthopedics, pediatrics, sports, and women’s health. Acute care is normally provided in a hospital setting and is meant for patients with severe injuries who need short-term but intensive therapy. Aquatic therapy consists of exercises done in a pool. This strategy can help patients build muscle strength, flexibility, and balance while alleviating the pressure of their own body weight. Somewhat similar to aquatic therapy is the anti-gravity treadmill, such as the AlterG. It uses an adjustable, pressurized air chamber that surrounds the lower half of a patient and reduces the amount of weight she runs or walks on. Cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy specialists focus on treatments for patients who have (or are at risk for) heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory disorders. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or breathing in pure oxygen, increases the amount of oxygen in the blood. It can increase a patient’s capacity for exercise and may be combined with physical therapy in cases of neurological disorders, wound care, or cardiopulmonary issues. Geriatric physical therapy focuses on treating older individuals. In many cases, the patients are recovering from medical treatments or surgery. Therapists may also create treatment plans for aging adults who are healthy but who want to take preventative steps toward maintaining their mobility and range of motion so they can remain independent and uninjured. Home health physical therapy is brought to the patient’s home. It is often a focus with older patients who may have had a joint replacement, bone fracture, or serious wounds. A physical therapist specializing in neurology focuses on patients with balance issues (also known as vestibular disorders) and brain injuries or disorders. Therapists will design exercises that reduce vertigo and lower a patient’s likelihood of falling. Such exercises aren’t always physical.

www.womensedition.com

According to the Vestibular Disorders Association, dizziness is sometimes caused by seeing an intense pattern, watching a movie, or being in a crowded place. Creating exercises that temporarily require a patient to view the objects or scenes that contribute to her loss of balance can eventually trick her brain into ignoring the abnormal signals it is receiving from the inner ear. Oncology physical therapy is for patients who are going through cancer treatment. This type of physical therapy is designed to help patients maintain resilience and endurance during extended treatments. Orthopedic therapy focuses on conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome or pain in the neck, back, ankles, or knees. In the case of carpal tunnel syndrome, a physical therapist who is specifically trained on how trauma and disease can impact the hand will develop a plan for rehabilitation. These therapists may also train workplaces on how to ensure their environments are set up ergonomically, so as to prevent employee injury from repetitive strain. Pediatric physical therapy serves children and often focuses on patients with developmental or genetic disorders, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, and brain injuries. Exercises are meant to increase independence and develop motor skills, so children can grow up as mobile as possible. Sports physical therapy focuses on treating athletes who sustain injuries while playing, as well as preventing injury and enhancing physical ability. Kinesiology taping has become more popular among athletes in the past several years. This stretchy tape can reduce pressure and swelling and provide stability to an injured body part. A women’s health physical therapist focuses on correcting incontinence and pelvic pain issues. She might also help patients who are suffering from complications after pregnancy, breast cancer pain, or osteoporosis. Pelvic floor therapy focuses specifically

on incontinence, organ prolapse, sexual dysfunction, and chronic pain in the pelvic area. Exercises may include pelvic floor muscle exercises (also known as Kegel exercises), vaginal weight training, and even biofeedback so patients better understand how to identify and control their pelvic floor muscles. A physical therapy technique that has become more popular in recent years is myofascial decompression, also known as “cupping,” which is based in a traditional Chinese medicine practice. Glass or bamboo cups are placed on the skin and create suction, which pulls at the skin and raises it. It can increase circulation and may be effective in pain relief for chronic neck and lower back pain, according to the journal PLOS One from the Public Library of Science. Dry needling (not to be confused with acupuncture) involves sticking needles into “trigger points” or taut muscle that is tender to the touch. Sticking needles into these points can help release tension, improving pain control and movement. Physical therapists are trained to determine the best ways for patients to regain their overall health and mobility and to avoid unnecessary healthcare procedures and services. Their holistic approach, which helps people regain their mobility and their life, is an essential part of our healthcare system. If you think you or someone you know could benefit from visiting with a physical therapist, ask for a referral from your general healthcare provider. Don’t go another day living in pain or struggling to do simple tasks, and don’t lose hope! You deserve to live a full life of independence, so go out there and let physical therapy help you regain it! Esther’s Consignment Boutique High Fashion at Affordable Prices

By Elizabeth French

Esther’s consignment store in Omaha has become a staple in luxury fashion by securing couture from across the country for over 40 years. Boasting such brands as Louis Vuitton and Rag and Bone, this family-owned and -operated consignment shop provides a comfortable space to peruse classic, high-end styles at remarkably affordable prices. Originally something of a happy accident, the store was opened four decades ago by Esther herself. Esther’s sister, Adele, was a fashion model in New York City. She began sending her seasonal items home to Esther with the thought of passing them along to her daughters. However, with so many friends who wanted designer clothes, Esther began her business venture, selling her sister’s New York fashions from the lower level of her home. With the passage of time, more consigners began seeking her services, and a business was born. After 10 years, Esther’s daughter, Trish Lonergan, began working with her mother. With a degree in sociology and experience in human resources, Trish learned the art of helping people and developed an eye for fashion while living in Los Angeles. “I’ve always

appreciated good clothes,” she says. Reflecting on her decision to come work with her mother, she notes, “In your life, sometimes, an opportunity presents itself.” This proved to be a wise choice, as Trish eventually took over the enterprise and is now the owner. She puts her appreciation of good clothes into good use on a daily basis. Esther’s has a diverse clientele that has only expanded over time. Spreading by word of mouth, friends and clients that have moved out of state continue to send boxes for consignment. Her staff goes through an extensive sorting process, seeking items that

Omaha Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery An Interview with Dr. Katherine Brown

By Elizabeth French

The Omaha Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery practice at 9850 Nicholas Street is a one-stop shop for solving vascular issues. From peripheral vascular disease to varicose veins, this specialized group of surgeons can repair the vessels and pathways for blood to flow freely. Dr. Katherine Brown, a boardcertified surgeon, specializes in vascular surgery and sees patients for a wide range of vascular issues. Originally from Colorado, Dr. Brown “always wanted to go to medical school.” She earned her degree in osteopathy after attending medical school in Kansas City. After her surgical internship and residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago, she participated in a fellowship at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine. She has been practicing since 2008. In the fall of 2015, Dr. Brown joined the Omaha Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery group. It was an easy and seamless transition. When asked about her balance of work and home life, she accredits her success to an incredibly supportive family. She also adds, “You’ve got to be a little spiritual,” as her position can have

extremely high stakes. Dr. Brown mainly treats patients with peripheral vascular disease (PVD) and venous disease. PVD can affect the arteries’ ability to carry blood from the heart to other parts of the body. To fix these problems, Dr. Brown uses an array of surgical techniques, ranging from complex open surgery to minimally invasive techniques. She also treats carotid artery disease, aortic and peripheral aneurysms, mesenteric arterial disease, dialysis access, and varicose veins. These diseases can be treated by using a variety of techniques, ranging from complex reconstruction of veins to salvage limbs,

Her goal is individualized care. “We treat everyone on an individual basis, with complete care,” she describes. “We have a great track record in our practice of taking good care of our patients.” The team at the Omaha Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery group focuses on diagnosing and treating circulatory issues. Using the most current techniques and equipment, the surgeons set a high standard of practice for surgical teams across the country. Leading the region in a collaborative approach, the team gathers experienced specialists from many different areas, including cardiology, interventional radiology, vascular surgery, neurosurgery, and cardiothoracic surgery. Dr. Brown’s favorite parts of her job are the complexity of the cases and the different technologies required to treat them. She loves the way the team can come together for a comprehensive solution to any vascular issue. Dr. Brown is certified in vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery. Board certification is an especially important quality when choosing a doctor or surgeon. Certification requires that doctors comply with specific requirements made by the national medical specialty boards in the United States. A board-certified doctor is more likely to have the most current procedural and diagnostic knowledge available.

One thing that sets this surgical group apart is the way they handle their patients’ care in a personal manner. Dr. Brown notes, “I treat patients like I would want myself or my family to be treated.” They have a wide range of procedural knowledge and variety of options when it comes to patient care. “We do all sorts of different operations for the vascular system all over the body,” Dr. Brown explains, including doing dialysis operations for patients or operating on blood vessels in the neck, legs, or arms. The most rewarding part of the job for Dr. Brown is the immediate effect she can have on her patients’ quality of life. “I just really like taking care of the patients, seeing them do well,” she shares. “It’s very rewarding.” With successful varicose vein treatment, for example, patients feel immediate relief and improvement in their mobility and energy, which greatly improves their quality of life. Dr. Brown stresses that her success is a team effort, acknowledging the tireless staff at her office and at Bergan Mercy Hospital, where they perform the majority of their surgeries. “They are just super,” she says. “They make a huge difference in the patient experience and outcome.” Accepting 29 insurance carriers and offering over 60 different procedures, Dr. Brown and her team are accessible to virtually everyone. Smoothing Out the Creases A Wrinkle Reduction Field Guide By Loretta McCollum

Be honest. Do you look in the mirror, press your fingers to your hairline, and lift, imagining your face minus the Gordon Ramsey forehead or the Cro-Magnon creases between the eyebrows? Maybe you pull back the skin around your mouth, trying to smooth out those deep jowl lines. Have turtlenecks and scarves become wardrobe staples? If you said yes to any of the above, keep reading, my friends. If the eyes are a window to the soul, then the wrinkles around them must be a topographical map of our life. That’s fine, but does this map really need to show each crater, valley, and ridge with such clarity? The emergence of lines and wrinkles is inevitable, but we can help prevent and minimize our map’s contours. Aging is one obvious cause of wrinkles. After age 20, our bodies produce one percent less collagen each year, which means our skin elasticity is reduced. Our oil and sweat glands also slow production as we age, and the underlying facial fat layers diminish—all of this leads to dry, thinning, wrinkle-prone skin. Environmental and genetic factors also play a role. Prolonged sun exposure damages the skin’s elastin fibers, increasing the prevalence of wrinkles. Make sure to apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and to use skin products with built-in sunscreen. Dermatologists and day spas are good sources for quality skin care options. Squinting in the sun promotes the development of crow’s feet, so

don some stylish UV-protective shades before you head outside. Eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, and avoiding tobacco products all help keep our skin soft and smooth. Foods containing vitamin B help form new skin cells, and vitamins C and E contain natural antioxidants. A good night’s sleep helps skin replenish and renew. If you’re a smoker, here’s one more reason to quit: Smoking reduces the blood supply to the skin, inhibiting skin cell renewal. Proper hydration keeps your skin supple. Like all body cells, skin cells primarily contain water. If your skin isn’t hydrated, it’s more likely to dry out, accelerating wrinkle emergence. Your doctor, dermatologist, or dietician can recommend vitamin-enriched skin creams, nutrition guidelines, or wellness plans. Nothing can prevent wrinkling entirely, so we must also consider wrinkle-wrestling treatments. Topical treatments are examples ›››

of noninvasive techniques. Prescriptionstrength Retin-A is a topical treatment that has been around for over 30 years and has been scientifically proven to reverse sun damage and prevent future damage. Chemical peels apply an acidic solution to the skin, dissolving its outer layer, which then sheds off over several days, revealing new, fresher-looking skin. These peels can be light, moderate, or deep. The level of the peel determines whether the procedure is performed by an aesthetician or a physician. Downtime is minimal. Results appear after a few days, and treatments can be repeated after several weeks. Laser and ultrasound treatments use laser light or ultrasonic waves to address wrinkles. Laser light therapy destroys the outer skin layer as it heats up the underlying layers, stimulating collagen production. Ultherapy is an ultrasonic therapy that uses a wand to deliver sonic wave blasts over the targeted area. The ultrasonic waves stimulate collagen production, plumping up the skin. This can usually be done over a lunch hour. Minimally invasive choices include Botox injections and collagen or fat fillers. Botox is injected directly into a wrinkle, blocking chemical signals that cause the surrounding muscles to contract. The muscles then relax, minimizing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. The effects are temporary, and injections are typically repeated every three months. Collagen and fat injections plump up skin cells, smoothing out their appearance. This treatment can be used on different areas of the face and is often applied to the lips. If you’re wondering when your lips went from plump and pouty to looking like a shriveled-up string bean, fear not. Cosmetic fillers will let you give Angelina Jolie a run for her lip money! Dermabrasion involves planing the skin with a rotating instrument. Under local anesthesia, the outer layer is removed to expose newer, younger-looking skin. Microdermabrasion, an exfoliation-like procedure, is a more superficial version of the technique; giving the skin a softer appearance. Those of us looking for a more drastic and long-term solution should consider surgery like face and neck lifts. Performed by plastic surgeons, these procedures remove excess skin while lifting and tightening muscles and tissue. Patients need several days of downtime following the procedure, but the results last up to 10 years. Where’s Your Passion? Go Search for It

By Janet Van deWalle

“There is no passion to be found playing small—in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” —Nelson Mandela; revolutionary, politician, philanthropist Today, I was having a conversation with an old friend. He’s frustrated about his career path, and he thought he would be further ahead at this point in the game. I suggested he change his career path and do something that would make him excited to get out of bed in the morning. Like many people, he kind of stumbled into his career. He didn’t intend to go into the field he’s been in for the last 15 years, and I think it’s finally catching up with him. Some people are quite content to play the role they landed, but others just become restless—that’s who I’m speaking to here. There’s no benefit for you to stay in a situation (professional or personal) where there is no passion, no excitement, no commitment. That’s not to say that every day should leave you fulfilled and brimming with joy, but more days should be like that than are not. “If you feel like there’s something out there that you’re supposed to be doing, if you have a passion for it, then stop wishing and just do it.” —Wanda Sykes; comedian As I look around at the people in my life, the ones who seem happiest are the ones who are doing something they are passionate

about. Even if you don’t share their interest, you can almost physically feel the energy and excitement when you are talking with someone about doing something they love. While you may not be passionate about public speaking, writing computer code, or crunching numbers, we’re lucky that there are people out there who love to do these things! You need to find something that lets you use your natural skills and your best abilities. “Any human being is really good at certain things. The problem is that the things you’re good at come naturally. And since most people are pretty modest instead of an arrogant S.O.B. like me, what comes naturally, you don’t see as a special skill. It’s just you. It’s what you’ve always done.” —Stephen Jay Gould; evolutionary scientist We all have bad days at work, but if your good days outweigh your bad ones, you’re definitely headed in the right direction. If you have lost your passion, maybe you can find it again on a different path. If you have never had a passion for your job or career, perhaps it’s time to start figuring out what else might spark your interest. Let’s face it: a good deal of our waking time is spent working, so you might as well be doing something you enjoy rather than something you hate. Life is way too short for that! WE

Honoring Individuality Accept Your Children for Who They Are Most people like to compare things. That’s why there are Top Ten lists that tell us how the reviewer feels about any manner of subject. Those reading the list can agree or disagree. Sometimes, arguments arise over what is best or why it is best. Many activities are rated during this time of year. The Super Bowl, the Academy Awards, March Madness, and the Olympics are only a few entities that reward those deemed “the best” by comparison to (hopefully) their peers. It’s okay to compare things that are measurable. We shouldn’t compare when it comes to people…especially when it comes to our children. I have two brothers. They are as different as night and day in many ways: physically (one is blond, the other dark), athletically (one did well at team sports, the other fared better in individual contests), academically (one was more studious than the other), and socially (one is an extrovert, the other more introverted). I have two sons who compare similarly to their uncles in physical appearance (one light, the other dark). Athletically, they both played team sports when they were younger, but one branched into individual contests as he got older. Educationally, their levels of schooling are similar. Although one is more outgoing than the other, they both are highly regarded by their friends. I have two grandsons, who are also very different. Although neither has reached his full growth (they’re 16 and nearly 18), one has a larger frame than the other. One appears more

Athletically, one showed some natural talent when younger, while the other has more interest in rules… neither has focused on sports. Finally, one is more social than the other. Can I pick favorites? A definite NO! I love both of my brothers. One died before I really got to know him as an adult. The other and I are friends and see each other often. I also love both of my sons. I see one more often than the other because our interests intersect more, but I enjoy the company of both. I love both of my grandsons equally, too. I spend more time with one because he likes to come to the lake and take road trips and the other prefers staying home to traveling. Whether brother, son, or grandson, I appreciate these men who are in my life for their individuality. Their differences enrich my life. Smooth Moves The Art of Buying and Selling Homes

By Robyn V. Powell

With the arrival of springtime comes the promise of new beginnings and the drive to move our lives forward. If you’ve been considering a move, spring is the perfect time to set your plans in motion. What better time to transition to a new chapter in your life? It’s no wonder the month of May is considered the “magic window” for home sales. According to Consumer Reports, homes listed for sale in May sell more quickly and for higher prices than at any other time of the year. Whether you’re downsizing or upsizing, moving across town or around the world, buying or selling your home is very likely one of the largest financial transactions you will make. Having the right people to make the process go smoothly is key. A realtor with knowledge of the market and good negotiating skills can make the difference between a successful transaction and one that falls apart. Start by asking friends or family for referrals in your target area. Once you have a couple of names, call each realtor and take the time to ask some essential questions. How long has she been a realtor? Is she familiar with the area? Is she equipped to deal with your unique situation? Does she have experience working with both buyers and sellers? What is the average selling time of the homes she sells? Check at least three

references, and ask specifically if there are any reasons you should not work with this realtor. Before signing any contract, read it carefully. Pay close attention to details such as time limits on how long an agent has to sell your property. While most contracts are 30–120 days, some can be a year or longer. Check the terms carefully, as they are binding. Find out how a realtor plans to market your home. Most buyers begin their search for properties online, so it’s important that your home is marketed online using professional photos that will show your property in its very best light. Buyers want to be able to visualize themselves living in a home. Instead of making them work hard to imagine what it could be like to live there, make it easy for people to feel at home from the moment they walk through the door. Declutter and depersonalize your home as much as possible by removing ›››

personal photos, memorabilia, and any furniture that blocks traffic flow. Consider hiring a stager, who will bring the objectivity required to ensure that your home appeals to the tastes of others. The best stagers will work with what you have, rearranging your belongings. Sometimes, this means allocating things to the garage or to a storage facility. While this may be inconvenient, a well-staged home that can meet and even exceed buyers’ expectations is more likely to sell in the shortest amount of time and at the best price. To position yourself to get the best price on a real estate purchase, get pre-approved for a mortgage before you go shopping. Sellers will take you more seriously, which can be important in a market where they are receiving multiple offers. Make your offer more attractive by limiting contingencies, such as not having to sell your own home before closing on the purchase. Base your offer on the home’s value rather than on the listing price. The best way to evaluate the market is to look at the recent sales of comparable homes in the area. These “comps” give you and your agent the information and ammunition to ensure your offer is where it should be. If a home is priced at market value or below, you are unlikely to get it for less. If, however, the house is priced above market value and has been on the market awhile, a lower offer supported by a market analysis may get you the home. This is where a good realtor is invaluable. Whether you’re buying or selling, it’s important to know what buyers look for when purchasing a home. While location and school district are always important factors, most buyers also prefer a home in move-in condition. Have roofing, foundation, electrical wiring, furnace, and air conditioning systems checked and repaired before listing your home to avoid any surprises during inspection. Any upgrades you make can be used as selling points by your realtor. A fresh coat of neutral paint and replacing stained carpet are inexpensive fixes that may improve your return on investment. Take care to boost curb appeal, as first impressions matter. If your home’s exterior is uninviting, you may not get buyers through the door! Make your move this spring! You can settle into your new home before the blistering heat of summer and begin the next chapter of your life in comfort. Live! Laugh! Love! Experience Life Without Feminine Discomforts By Marge Shoemaker

Have you ever heard anyone say, “I laughed so hard tears ran down my leg”? (Have you ever said it yourself?) As many of us know all too well, this is a reference to urine leakage or incontinence. The type of leakage that happens when you laugh hard, sneeze, or engage in high-impact exercise (like jumping jacks) is called “stress incontinence.” If you have been living with stress incontinence, don’t wait another day! Call Heartland Women’s Healthcare and find out if you might be a candidate for FemTouch treatments. According to the FemTouch brochure, it is an “out-patient, minimally invasive, non-surgical, nonhormonal, homeopathic, post-menopausal laser procedure used in treating vaginal health conditions.” It is fast, simple, and comfortable—the whole procedure takes only a few minutes. It is efficient, with satisfying outcomes reported after just a couple of sessions. It requires no anesthesia or special post-procedural care. Although the FemTouch procedure isn’t right for everyone, it has helped many women. The staff at Heartland Women’s Healthcare will determine whether FemTouch treatments are right for you. If they are, you will be scheduled for a set of three to four treatments and can expect to see results almost immediately. Heartland Women’s Healthcare patients are enthusiastic about their results after FemTouch treatments. Christine relates experiencing some vaginal discomfort, including vaginal itching, after having 10 children. “The biggest improvement in my daily life has been no discomfort from vaginal itching,” she confides. “My husband and I can enjoy intimacy again.” Kim, a 25-year-old mother of three, was having issues with leakage (among other discomforts) when she would laugh, sneeze, or play with her kids—problems she no longer had after her FemTouch treatments. Client Melissa had been wearing pads every day but notes that “after my procedure, my quality of life increased immensely!” Ann, a patient in her 50s, was surprised at how painless the procedure was and how much the treatment eased her difficulties. Susan felt everything about her was “going south” after menopause. She raves that “Dr. Peterson and her staff are awesome!” She highly recommends them, not only for FemTouch but also for regular OB-GYN concerns. In the waiting area at Heartland Women’s Healthcare is a mural encouraging us to “Live! Love! Laugh!” This is FemTouch’s motto, and it also reflects what Heartland Women’s Healthcare desires for all women. Dr. Kristi Peterson has been in practice since 1991 and is the owner of Heartland Women’s Healthcare. As a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology, her practice includes, but is not limited to, such female issues as regulation and manage-

Jessie Gering, APRN, wanted to be a nurse after helping with her great-grandmother’s health care in her later years (she was nearly 104 when she died). Through nursing school, Jessie became interested in labor and delivery and other aspects of women’s health care. She is now a nurse practitioner, assistant to Dr. Kristi, and a sexual assault examiner. She also writes an informational blog on Facebook. Both women are enthusiastic about the FemTouch procedure. “It’s worked when other things haven’t,” Dr. Kristi says. Since January 2017, she has performed over 100 FemTouch procedures. She has also undergone the treatment herself. She was so thrilled with her results that “I called the office and enthused about not experiencing any leakage for days,” she laughs. Dr. Kristi, Jessie, and their staff are sensitive to their patient’s fears and concerns. They understand that a patient may want someone, such as a friend or companion, present during a procedure, and they are happy to accommodate that request. They also educate each patient on all aspects of the planned treatment. “The more the patient knows, the more comfortable she will be during the procedure,” Jessie explains. Both women feel that the patient must be part of her own healthcare decisions. “The patient should know the WHY as well as the WHAT of what we do,” Dr. Kristi states. “That knowledge helps ensure she will be able to comfortably follow our directions.” Patients are encouraged to look into care options, read research on their symptoms, and call with any questions (in particular, staff are happy to help you discern the quality of information available online). Dr. Kristi reminds us of the adage, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Patients are expected to follow good health practices: eat healthy, exercise adequately, and arrange for regular examinations. Spring Landscaping Projects The Time to Plan is Now!

By Anne Yankus

Spring is just around the corner, so it’s time to think about starting all the new landscaping projects you want done this season! Last month, we took a look at some softscaping ideas, like trees, turf, and garden plots. This month, let’s focus on the more permanent fixtures in your yard, like patios, retaining walls, water features, and outdoor kitchens. These features are known as hardscaping. There are so many features you can install in your yard, but some of the most basic are retaining walls, patios, walkways, and driveways. Retaining walls can be made of a variety of materials, including concrete blocks, stone veneer, poured concrete, bricks, wood, dry stone or boulders, and gabion. Patios and walkways can be made of concrete, natural stone, brick, gravel, tile, pavers, or a mix of multiple materials. Driveways can be made of concrete, pavers, asphalt, or loose materials like gravel or crushed shell. One thing that most of us in the northern half of the country have to take into consideration is shoveling snow. Getting up early to clear the driveway before you can even leave for work is the worst! Have you considered a heated driveway? They work by using a radiant heat flooring system (similar to what can be installed indoors to keep the tile floor cozy in your master bath). This can be accomplished with electrical wiring or a series

of tubes through which heated water or antifreeze is pumped. Depending on your current setup, you may not even need to pave a whole new driveway to install a heating system. There are many factors to consider, including the proximity of trees, soil composition, and more, so you’ll want to consult a professional to determine the cost and ease of installation. To kick your yard up a notch, why not install a water feature? Ponds can be created in small pots or by digging out a small section of your yard, and they often feature aquatic plants and fish. Waterfalls bring the soothing sound of falling water to your yard. They can be built from scratch with a little help from a landscape professional. Another popular yard idea is a fireplace or fire pit. Some things to keep in mind when considering installing an outdoor fireplace are placement (for both the unit and any adjacent ›››

seating), what sort of fireplace you intend it to be (wood-burning or gas), and style. “Built-in” fireplaces that share a wall with your house are a popular style, and both “built-in” and freestanding fireplaces can be made out of many different types of materials (such as stone, marble, brick, or even fire-resistant glass). If you want a fire feature without adding an entire fireplace and chimney, a fire pit may be more your style. From the simplest metal bowl to a custom-built stone- or brickringed pit, fire pits are a nice addition to any yard. If you really want to go all out, there is the ultimate yard addition: the outdoor kitchen. Outdoor kitchens aren’t just your parents’ barbecue grill on the patio anymore; they can be anything from a deluxe grill and seating to a full-on outdoor range, oven, and countertops! The only limit is how much space you have (and how much money you want to spend). If you’ve got a good handle on what you want in your yard and where you want it to go, you can probably skip straight to the landscape contractors and have them get started. If you’ve come up a little short when sorting out your overall plan, hiring a landscape designer first is definitely the way to go. Some landscape designers will even hire their own contractors to complete the work they’ve designed for you. Professionals can also help with long-term planning. A good landscape designer can help you figure out what you can install now, within your yearly budget, that will help you accomplish your ultimate yard goals over time. After all, not every project can or should be crammed in before next winter. Let your professionals help you figure out what to do first and how to build your budget around small sub-projects that will lead to your ultimate goal: your dream yard. Who you hire depends, of course, on how much you want to spend, how complicated your projects are, and how quickly you want them done. Take the time to set up a good communication rapport with your landscape professionals. The better they know you and what you want, the better they’ll be able to get your projects done right. Orthopedic Surgery for the Upper Body Put Your Joints Back in Motion

By Ashley Anderson

Sometimes, we take for granted the mobility of our bodies and the role that our fully-functioning joints play in our lives. Typing on a keyboard at work, playing ball with our kids, and crossing the finish line in a marathon all depend on the ability of our joints. When our joints are not at peak performance, it can be difficult to enjoy life—we end up sitting on the sidelines, perhaps unable to perform even basic functions like walking, waving, or grasping objects. When upper body joints like fingers, wrists, elbows, and shoulders go bad, it can be difficult to perform tasks and limiting to the enjoyment of everyday life. There are a number of things you can do to help prevent this from happening. To keep your joints in top shape, it is important to take care of your body. This includes keeping fit, protecting your body during activity, and maintaining a proper diet. Make sure to stretch frequently. You should wear protective gear when participating in activities like roller skating or rock climbing, and it’s important to know (and respect) your limits when it comes to exerting stress on your joints. Don’t lift too much weight or repeat a single motion too frequently. Maintain a healthy weight, consume joint-healthy foods like milk and fish, and take a daily supplement for joint support. Your primary care physician can answer specific questions you may have about joint care.

Joint pain can be anywhere from mild to severe, and it can occur for a number of reasons, including arthritis, injury, or inflammation. Pain can set on at any time, and it may last for a short period of time or drag on for months. If you are experiencing joint pain, you should see your doctor for diagnosis and treatment. Your doctor may refer you to an orthopedic specialist for additional care. Joint pain is not just for seniors experiencing arthritis. Anyone can experience joint pain. Hands can become stiff, pain can occur in shoulders and elbows, and wrists can become sore at any age. Joint pain often occurs when the cartilage within the joint is damaged, causing bones to rub against one another. Treatment for joint pain can range from short-term, nonsurgical treatment to a full surgical procedure. Non-surgical treatment may include medication for pain or inflammation, physical therapy, and resting the joint (if injury has occurred). In more severe cases, patients may require an orthopedic surgical procedure, during which adjustments are made to the liga-

ments, cartilage, or bone of the joint. In cases like “trigger finger,” where patients experience a pinched tendon in the hand, surgery is performed to release the impacted tendon. Carpal tunnel surgery is another hand surgery performed to remove ligament pressure on nerves and relieve symptoms. In other cases, total joint replacement is necessary. Typically done on knees and hips, this procedure is becoming more common for upper body joints, as well, including ankles, wrists, shoulders, and elbows. Total joint replacement is a surgical procedure in which parts of damaged joints are removed and are replaced with a device called a prosthesis. The prosthesis is made of metal, plastic, or ceramic materials, and it’s designed to replicate the movement of a normal, healthy joint. This procedure is performed by an orthopedic surgeon. Your family physician should be able to recommend a reputable orthopedic surgeon, should you need one. She should be a specialized physician, board-certified in surgery and orthopedic medicine. Joint replacement surgery typically takes a few hours and is performed in a hospital or outpatient medical facility. Joint replacement surgeries are commonly covered by insurance if the procedure is deemed necessary. Postoperative recovery may vary based on the joint replaced and the patient. It can range from a couple of weeks to several months. You should be able to move your new joint shortly after surgery and begin rehabilitation toward full movement and function. Exercise and physical therapy will likely be part of the rehabilitation plan. Your orthopedic surgeon will discuss your postoperative plan with you following surgery. Look forward to improved mobility and relieved symptoms for up to 20 years, depending on your particular case. Consult with your physician on the longevity of joint replacement. If you are experiencing joint pain, suffer no longer! Inquire with your doctor about the cause and treatment options available to you. If joint replacement surgery is required, find a reputable surgeon and discuss your surgical care plan. After surgery, you should be on the mend toward pain-free mobility and an enjoyable everyday life. Sources for this article included: webmd.com, orthoinfo.aaos.org, and learn.org. WE

An Inside Look

BodyWise Therapy Relieve Your Pain With Myofascial Release By Jackie Byers

Shanna Paopao of BodyWise Therapy is a Nebraska native who is all about pain relief. She began her career as a physical therapist, serving in skilled nursing facilities, hospital settings, and as a home health worker. It wasn’t until she started suffering from her own severe pain and movement restriction that she sought a myofascial therapist. “The therapy helped me so much, I did further study to become a myofascial therapist myself,” Shanna says. “I was hired by and worked with Teresa Miller for eight months prior to purchasing the business from her when she moved out of the area.” Not sure what myofascial therapy is? You’re not alone. As Shanna explains, “The fascia system is a three-dimensional connective tissue spread throughout the body. It is the support system for the muscles. When it is stressed, injured, or damaged, the result is pain—sometimes, extreme pain. It can cause chronic ailments such as fibromyalgia, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, muscle spasms, and migraines. It also can cause temporomadibular joint dysfunction, which makes every movement of the jaw painful. Such injuries often lead to chronic fatigue.” Fascial problems can result from significant events like sports injuries or trauma or from chronic conditions like scoliosis. However, they can also result from something as simple as poor posture or just twisting the wrong way. Problems with the fascia are not detectible with standard tests. “X-rays, CAT scans, and myelogram, while important diagnostic tools for some injuries, do not show fascial restriction.” Another difficulty in diagnosis is that restriction or damage in one part of the fascia can affect the entire system. “The pain is real and intense but may not be pointing to the region where the restriction has occurred.” Shanna notes, “Restriction of the fascia causes restriction of movement. Unless the problem is corrected, the pain often gets worse. The old remedy of two aspirin may bring a bit of relief, but it does not solve the problem. In order to end the pain, one must strengthen the muscles, but working the muscles to make them stronger is sometimes not possible. Myofascial release does not happen by force.” Shanna explains that gentle application of sustained pressure will release the fascial restrictions. “It takes time to set things right. Each patient meets with me for full hour sessions. No interruptions, no phones, no rush.” One of Shanna’s patients was experiencing devastating migraines twice a week, which made handling family and career obligations almost impossible. “Over a course of treatments, the migraines diminished sharply. She had only two over

48

March 2018

a period of six months.” While a physician referral is not always necessary for therapy, local doctors do send patients to Shanna. “The nurse of a referring doctor paid me a real Owner Shanna Paopao compliment. She said, ‘Everyone we send to you tells us how helpful your treatments are.’” Shanna’s office sets the tone for the healing to come with soothing colors, live plants, and quiet. “Today’s world makes too many noisy demands on us,” she declares. “It is always hurry, hurry, hurry. If we do sit down for a break, we don’t relax—we pull out our phones and tablets, which often bring us more stress. The negative effects of stress are being carefully studied and catalogued. If a person is experiencing chronic pain or just discomfort, stress multiplies the pain. Neither pain nor stress goes away on its own.” Although medication is sometimes needed to treat pain, Shanna notes that pharmaceutical solutions come with significant risks. “Chemical ways of relaxing often do the body more harm than good,” Shanna adds. “I know myofascial therapy helps my clients deal with the stresses caused by pain and the stresses caused by life. Many of us do not believe we have time to relax, to take a walk, or just to close our eyes and breathe for a few minutes. The truth is, if we don’t allow some time for quiet, we are creating more pain.” Shanna concludes, “In addition to healing, myofascial release helps us to relax. That, too, has healing power for acute and chronic pain. The body is a completely integrated system. If one part is injured, the entire system suffers. This therapy offers healing for the entire system.” Shanna reminds us that she does not allow phone calls to interrupt her one-hour sessions with her clients. However, if she doesn’t answer when you call for a consultation, she asks that you simply leave a message, which she will promptly return. For relief and relaxation, the number to call is 402-932-8686. BodyWise Therapy is located on the corner at 2504 South 119th Street, in Omaha. Dow 20,000 or 30,000? Market Forces at Work By George Morgan

Last year was a banner year for the stock market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 27 percent, and all the other indexes had equally impressive increases. What follows is not a scientific explanation of what occurred—nor is it a prediction of what lies ahead for the market in 2018. Rather, it is anecdotal information to give you some insight regarding what did happen and what might happen next. The year 2017 began with a new administration and Congress that are much more business-friendly than the previous ones. President Trump’s first major action was to reverse over 70 executive orders written by President Obama that focused on environmental and social issues. Compliance with these orders had required businesses to devote time and capital resources to meet the requirements. One of the many results of these reversals is that those resources became available to devote to other areas of the business—areas that could include business growth and product development. It also was a signal to the corporate world that companies would face less government involvement in their day-today operations and would be free to conduct their business without outside interference. The business community at large and the stock market saw this as a positive step, and the market responded accordingly. Is the market currently overpriced and about to come thundering down? According the Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett, the answer is no. One way that investment professionals evaluate the price of a stock is through its price earnings ratio (P/E ratio). This is the current price of the stock divided by its trailing four quarters’ earnings. If a stock has a P/E ratio of less than 15, it is considered to be selling at a discount to its real value and should be purchased. If a stock has a P/E ratio of greater than 15, it is considered to be overpriced. This could potentially lead investors to sell it, which would result in a lower price. A P/E ratio of 15 means that a stock is selling at its fair value. A P/E ratio is also calculated for the market. At the moment, the market P/E ratio is 22.85. This is a bit high, but it is down from 24.71, which is where it started in 2017. Dow Jones estimates that projected earnings growth for 2018 will bring this number down to 18.68 by the end of the year. Where do we go from here? The biggest thing on the horizon is the recently passed tax code legislation. Part of what drove the market toward the end of 2017 was anticipation that a major overhaul in the tax code would be passed. Many individuals and businesses now face a lower tax rate, which means that both will have more money to spend. The most powerful element in this legislation is the reduction of the corporate tax rate from 35 percent

50

March 2018

to 21 percent. Businesses will keep 14 percent more of their profits, which they can spend on growing the business, developing new products, and hiring workers. Another potential consequence of lowering corporate tax rates is that American corporations that are holding money overseas may bring that money back to the United States. Currently, American corporations have approximately four trillion dollars parked in European banks. (These are profits they have earned in their European operations.) Corporations may have been reluctant to bring those dollars back to the United States because of the high tax rate here. Now that the corporate tax rate is lower, these corporations have new incentive to bring that cash back to the United States to develop new markets and products. Apple just announced that they are going to pay $38 billion in corporate income taxes and bring the money they have in European banks to the United States to spend it here. This could amount to almost half a trillion dollars. In addition to making ongoing improvements to the iPhone, Apple is on the cutting edge of cloud technology. Their increased activity in this area could amount to as many as 200,000 new jobs. The Wall Street Journal pointed out another phenomenon that is contributing to the upward movement of the market. They call it the “don’t leave me behind” syndrome. People who were out of the market and sitting on cash have seen the strong recent gains and have realized that others have made money while they have not. Now, these people are jumping back into the market and hoping to make up lost ground. As I said, I make no predictions, but we do know that the market has stronger tailwinds than it does headwinds. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. Hope for Arthritis Latest Treatments for a Better Life

By Linda Barnes

Although arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States, with more than 50 million adults and 300,000 children affected, much hope exists for successful treatment. Joint disease and joint pain can be treated with the latest in medications, surgery, and other strategies to assist in its management. Don’t despair if joint pain is diminishing your zest for life—instead, get help! Two main forms account for most instances of the joint pain that we call arthritis. They have similar effects—joint stiffness and pain— but very different root causes. Osteoarthritis is often referred to as “wear and tear” joint disease. Damage to joints results from injury or from use over time. Rheumatoid arthritis is very different in its cause. An autoimmune disease, it occurs when one’s immune system attacks healthy tissue, causing inflammation and pain in a joint. Your primary care doctor may provide help with mild to moderate symptoms. For more severe pain or in cases where immune response is suspected, you’ll likely be referred to a rheumatologist. This is a medical specialty in which an internal medicine doctor or pediatrician receives years of additional training in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal diseases and autoimmune conditions that affect muscles, joints, and bone. On completion of these studies, the doctor can become board-certified in rheumatology.

Of the two main categories, osteoarthritis (OA) is most prevalent in the United States. This is not surprising when you consider our aging population; most OA is associated with advancing age. Exceptions are OA caused by injury or by repetitive movements. Normal joint use over decades breaks down the cartilage or cushion between joints, causing stiffness, swelling, and pain. Osteoarthritis can occur in any joint but occurs most often in knees, hips, lower back, neck, and fingers. When cartilage wears away, the bones of the joint eventually become damaged. Treatment includes over-the-counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medicines. Working with a trainer or a physical therapist to strengthen muscles around joints may help. If excess body weight is contributing to the pain, losing weight can be beneficial. My husband got initial relief from steroid injections into his knee joint and by wearing a special knee brace. A scope of his knee to remove fragments of meniscus, along with physical therapy, helped for a time but could not eliminate the pain from OA. Eventually, he underwent a successful total knee replacement. Joint replacement

by an orthopedic surgeon can restore your ability to move and enjoy everyday activities again. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is another story. It can strike at any age but more often affects adults 60 years or older. New cases are two to three times higher in women. Genetics also figure in your likelihood to develop RA. Since it results from your own immune system attacking tissue in your joints, it can come on rather suddenly, often in the hands, wrists, and knees. Inflammation and damage can cause significant pain, trouble walking, and even deformity. If RA is suspected, early treatment is essential to limit permanent damage to the joints. RA can also cause problems with the heart, lungs, and eyes. A rheumatologist will review any preliminary tests your primary doctor has done and may order additional tests such as a blood analysis, x-ray, CT, or MRI to assess joint issues. A customized treatment plan might include medications, physical therapy, injections, or a referral to another specialist. The goal with RA treatment is not only pain relief and improved quality of life but actual remission of the disease. People with RA often experience fatigue, weakness, and even depression. Besides genetics, other lifestyle choices can impact the disease. Smoking is believed to not only increase your risk of getting RA but to make the disease worse if you already have RA. Obesity is another risk factor. Treatment often includes use of prescription medications called DMARDs (disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs) to slow the progression and prevent damage to joints. Several different DMARDs can be tried to find the best one; they can also be used in combination. Biologics might be used where DMARDs are not effective. Along with the latest medications, RA often responds to strategies such as physical activity at home or at the gym, self-management education, physical therapy, quitting smoking, and losing weight. If depression is making matters worse, it should also be treated. Therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy, relaxation, and massage may facilitate a better sense of well-being. Alternative options such as vitamins, supplements, acupuncture, or braces may be helpful for arthritis, but you should always get input from your physician. Hot and cold treatments or electrical stimulation may help ease discomfort. WE

Enhance Your Outdoor Living Space Add a Deck, Pergola, or Gazebo

By Connie Keck

We are about to “spring forward” into the marvelous warm weather of spring. You’ll probably start spending more time in your yard as the weather improves. What better way to bring form and function to your outdoor space than by adding, replacing, or building an outside structure that reflects your style? Decks are a great option when it comes to the ebb and flow of traffic inside and outside of your home. Decks do not have to be square! No matter what space you have available, a deck contractor can make a footprint that will work. If you’ve got the room, you might consider a multi-level deck. Adding another level multiplies your living and entertaining space, and it also breaks up a long flight of stairs. Explore both wood and composite decking materials. Real wood is always in style, but composite decking is becoming more popular because of its long (and virtually maintenance-free) lifespan. You can extend the color palette to your deck from your home. With today’s selection of stains and decking materials, it’s easy to find one that complements your home’s exterior. Deck railings provide safety and beauty. An innovative railing can turn an average deck into an extraordinary structure. Railings come in glass, metal, composite, and vinyl. If your deck is low to the ground, you could incorporate wide stairs instead of a railing. Stairs can run the width of one or more sides of your deck. This

open look provides an elegant transition into the yard. During construction is a good time to add enhancements like a sound system, lighting, fans, and a television. A pergola is an outdoor structure consisting of columns that support a roofing grid of beams and rafters. The word comes from the Latin for a projecting eave. The roofing grid may be left open or covered so as to create an area sheltered from the elements. Pergolas may be freestanding or attached to a house and are often constructed over a deck or patio. Pergolas offer shade to an outside seating area that allows for breezes and light sun but offers protection from the harsh glare of direct sunlight. Vines love pergolas (this is a great way to add a little privacy). Modern pergola design materials include vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum, and chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC). These materials do not require yearly paint or stain like wood. Pergolas can be made from a weather-resistant wood, such as western red cedar, and are then painted or stained. Alternatively, they can be made from a wood treated with preservatives for outdoor use.

Brick and stone pillars are used, as well. Another option for additional structures in the yard is a gazebo. These are typically built away from the house. A gazebo has a roof, which is what distinguishes a gazebo from other outdoor structures. A cupola may be added to the roof to enhance the overall design. When it comes to shape and size, the options are nearly endless. A gazebo could be an oval, rectangle, hexagon, octagon, or dodecagon (12 sides). Common sizes vary from eight feet to 20 feet or more. You will need to work with your design team to determine what shape and size will fit for the area in your yard that has been designated for this structure. Gazebos are generally built with common materials: wood or vinyl for the structure and wood shingles or metal for the roofing. Eco-friendly treatments protect wood against termite damage and fungal decay. Treated pine gazebos are an economical option. Much like a porch, a gazebo can be entirely open-air, can be screened in, or can have full windows. Built-in benches around the perimeter are popular; these can be standard wooden benches or cushioned. To crank it up a notch, consider adding overhead or accent lighting, a ceiling fan, or maybe even a heater. If your gazebo is enclosed, you may want to add a door. Gazebos are in great demand for garden weddings and parties, to incorporate in and around poolside green spaces, or to enhance detailed landscaped areas. Whatever your finished design, a gazebo will truly add a fresh perspective to your outdoor area. Gazebos are a great place to escape for some quiet time. Contractors who advertise as deck builders most likely have the skills and workmanship to handle other outdoor building projects like pergolas and gazebos. Ask for recommendations from neighbors whose yards already have the structures you’d like to have built. Make sure that your contractor plans to obtain all the proper permits for the job before beginning work. Always get your contract in writing, and make sure it includes guidelines on when the work is to be finished. Hire your contractor now so you can enjoy the sights and sounds of spring in your new and improved outdoor living space! Has Winter Left Your Car in a Rut? Finding Quality Collision Repair By Brennan Hallock

As another winter begins to melt away, we will be left with cherished memories: the first snowflakes of the season, holidays spent with friends and family, and playing in the snow. We will also say good-bye to the parts of winter we will not miss, such as icy roads and poor driving conditions. Winter can be hard on our vehicles in a number of ways, from salt spray that it’s too cold to wash off to dents and dings from sliding into a mailbox. If your vehicle was damaged this winter, it is almost always a good idea to repair it right away. If you are leasing or have a loan on the vehicle, you will likely have little to no choice whether or not to repair your vehicle. If you own the vehicle outright, though, you do have some flexibility. Some people choose to not repair their vehicle if they feel like the damage isn’t enough to matter. While this can sound tempting, it may be harmful in the long term. If you have an accident in the future, that pre-existing damage will be deducted from any settlement your insurance company offers you. It can also prove dangerous to leave your vehicle unrepaired. Depending on where the damage is, what look like a small dent could impact underlying safety features. It is best to have the vehicle looked at by a professional, who can identify potential safety issues and determine what repairs should be made.

When finding a professional to repair your vehicle, do your research. Ask family and friends for recommendations, investigate different body shops, and read online reviews. Estimates can vary widely, so you should plan to get at least three. Issues to consider when determining which body shop is right for you include shop credentials, technician certifications, insurance recommendations, whether or not everything is put in writing, and how long the repair is likely to take. A shop’s credentials can be a very important way to determine its credibility. Look around the walls inside the shop for plaques or certificates stating memberships or recent awards. For example, the shop may be a member of the local Better Business Bureau or the state auto body association. Ask about the shop’s certifications. These can indicate what kind of training their auto body technicians have completed. Some examples are the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR) Training, National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification, a vehicle

manufacturer’s certification program, and third-party certifications (from places like paint companies or product suppliers). Your insurance company’s recommendations can help you quickly narrow down auto body shops. They will likely have a list of recommended shops in your area. You are generally not required to follow their recommendations, but it may make your search easier. Ask the repair shop if everything is put in writing. This includes the estimate, itemized bill, parts and labor costs, and warranty. A reputable auto body shop will always supply this information in writing to ensure you are being treated fairly. How long the repair will take depends on a number of factors, including the extent of damage to your vehicle. It is good to ask different shops how long they will take to repair your vehicle, though, to get an idea of a normal timeframe. Many repairs take more than a week, and being without your vehicle for that long can be an enormous hassle. Picking an auto body repair shop that will repair your vehicle in a timely and satisfactory manner is important.

Once you have chosen a repair shop, there are more decisions you will have to make. If your car sustained minor dents (from hail, for example), paintless dent removal may be a good option. This won’t fix cracks, plastic, or paint scrapes, but it can be a cheaper and quicker option than replacing a dented panel. Repairing a damaged part rather than replacing it may also be more cost-effective. This should also be reserved for minor damage. If the part has cracked, you will need to replace it. If there is a major dent that will require extensive work, it may even be cheaper to replace it, unless you happen to have a very old or specialty car. If parts are hard to find, then repair may end up being the way to go. Now that the snow and slush are on their way out, you may find yourself in line at the car wash. Don’t worry if that wash reveals some minor damage—you know how to find the best repair shop for your vehicle. When you do your own research, you can be confident that you’re getting a good deal. The Good Life

Velvet and Lace and Pearls, Oh My! Prom and Wedding Trends for 2018 By Elizabeth French

From high school to the red carpet, everyone wants to feel glamorous on their special day. Whether it’s the prom or your wedding, keeping up with fashion trends while honoring your personal style can be tricky. Here are some ideas from the 2018 season to help you stand out. Prom brings an exciting opportunity to get glamorous and have fun with friends. One note of fashion caution: Schools have dress codes, even at prom! It’s smart to check before shopping to see if any styles are not allowed. Traditional styles will always be in vogue, so feel free to go for the princess dress, if that speaks to you. For a modern twist, add a bit of texture with a beaded belt, or perhaps tassel earrings and colorful shoes. Another way to add texture is by incorporating velvet. This luxurious fabric adds sophistication to any outfit, whether it is the material of the dress, shoes, or jewelry. It also goes well with a pop of glittering chunky jewelry. Illusion dresses are on trend and allow the wearer to show a hint of skin while remaining tasteful. Two-piece gowns with beaded accents and lacy tops are also on the rise for a twist on tradition. When choosing your final outfit, wear what makes you comfortable, and feel as fabulous as you are on the inside. Bridal fashion has seen many changes in the 2018 season. Several designers have decided that black is the new white and have added black accents such as bows, belts, and even full-length skirts. Channeling classic Audrey Hepburn, sweeping ruffles and tapered skirts are all draped in tulle and accented with the tiniest of lace details. Sheer corsets and pearl embellishments are also incredibly popular, adding a seductive touch for the daring bride. A twist on “something blue” was also on the runway, by Mira Zwillinger and Randy Fenoli. Layers of sky-blue tulle along with pearl accents make for a truly fairy-like gown. If you are more of a traditionalist, don’t worry. Plenty of classic silhouettes are still going strong in bridal fashion. More traditional features like lace gloves, statement bows, and beaded dresses are commonly seen. Choosing a dress for a second wedding can be hard to navigate. Queen Victoria popularized the white wedding dress, which began to symbolize the concept of the purity of a first-time bride. However, as shown in the 2018 bridal collections from many designers, brides are moving farther and farther from tradition. Therefore, when choosing a dress for a second wedding, follow the same basic rules as a first-time bride: Consider the venue, the time of year, and the overall tone of the wedding. Staying true to your personal style is also extremely important. As we mature, our tastes

60

March 2018

mature, as well. Perhaps a cocktail dress or couture skirt or pantsuit may fit your taste. (Bonus: They really can be worn on more than one occasion!) The only thing to avoid as a second-time bride is a blusher veil to cover the face—this would likely be seen as a faux pas. Other than that, do not be afraid to flaunt your figure and dress in a way that makes you comfortable. The more confident you feel, the more excited you will be for the walk down the aisle! The mother of the bride can have an equally difficult challenge in choosing an appropriate dress; trying to stand out but not overshadow the bride or end up looking like a bridesmaid can seem as challenging as a tightrope walk. Some trends, such as pastels, neutrals, and lace, are timeless ways to blend with the wedding party. Caped dresses are also extremely popular and, with asymmetrical designs, are a twist on a ’70s trend. Tiered skirts and sheer sleeves are also a great way to flatter any figure while adding a hint of sensuality. You may think men have it easy when it comes to formalwear—after all, it’s hard to go too wrong with a basic black tuxedo. Think again! As options grow, so does the number of choices that need to be made. Men still need to select from a bevy of shirts, vests, ties, cufflinks, and shoes. Colored, printed, white, and even corduroy tuxedos are being worn on the red carpet by both men and women. No matter your personal style, the key is to follow your gut, pick pieces that speak to you, and dress in a manner that reflects who you are. Cherry Blossom Festival Let the Beauty of Spring Welcome You By Leslie Byrne

Suffering from spring fever? A trip to Washington D.C. during cherry blossom season is surely the cure. Nothing will inspire you to look forward to spring more than a leisurely walk down the National Mall or the East Potomac Park surrounded by thousands of blooming cherry trees. It is the kind of joyful experience you may not think you’ll have in a city known for politics, but it’s something you don’t want to miss. Washington D.C. feels like a city designed for visitors. You’ll find that the city makes it easy to enjoy the cherry blossoms as well as other attractions. If a simple walk to view the cherry blossoms isn’t your thing, consider renting a bike. You can ride at your own pace or take an organized tour. Another option is to book one of the many water cruises or riverboat tours that let you enjoy the sights from the Potomac River. Many cruises include food, live entertainment, and a river view of many historical landmarks. Most river cruises and tours require advanced ticket purchase online, so ask your travel agent what is needed. Here’s the tricky part of planning a cherry blossom trip— timing. Mother Nature isn’t known for following a strict schedule. Several websites provide progress reports of the cherry blossoms and predict peak blossom dates, but there is no guarantee. Since peak bloom dates are hard to predict, the safest bet is to visit during the five-week National Cherry Blossom Festival

that honors the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from the mayor of Tokyo. The trees were sent to honor the lasting friendship between the United States and Japan. During this time, the Japanese Embassy hosts several events showcasing Japanese art and culture. This year, the dates for the Cherry Blossom Festival are March 20–April 15. Even if you miss the peak bloom dates, there’s plenty to do! The city hosts a wide range of activities during cherry blossom season, including the Cherry Blossom Festival, which features an opening ceremony with world renowned performers, a kite festival, the annual Pink Tie party (a fundraiser that benefits the Cherry Blossom Festival), a parade, and Petalpalooza (a free event filled with art, fun, live music, and fireworks.) There are plenty of free activities to enjoy, but some events require advance ticket purchase and sell out quickly. Visit nationalcherryblossomfestival. org to learn more. If you plan to attend the Cherry Blossom Parade on April 15, don’t miss the Sakura Matsuri–Japanese Street Festival, which ›››

starts immediately after the parade. Since 1961, this one-day exhibition of Japanese culture has been a wonderful opportunity to experience Japanese art, music, and food. You’ll also enjoy the latest in Japanese fashion and video games. This event will have something for every member of the family to enjoy. Fortunately for residents and visitors, our nation’s capital is one of the easiest major cities to get around. Washington D.C. has terrific transportation options, including Metrorail (the train and subway system) and Metrobus (a city-wide bus system) as well as the DC Circulator bus service. The DC Circulator routes are limited to the main attractions, with a fare of only $1 per trip. The city also offers taxis as well as water taxis. Uber and Lyft are also available. If you bring or rent a car, you will find parking at most attractions. You will also be pleased with all the lodging available in and around the city. Visitors have a wide range of options, including large, elegant hotels as well as national chain hotels. Since Washington is a historic city, think about staying at one of the many historic inns or boutique hotels. Many visitors are booking Airbnbs in trendy areas like Georgetown, a historic neighborhood in northeast Washington D.C. that has cobblestone, tree-lined streets with plenty of restaurants, shops, history, and night life along the Potomac River. During the Cherry Blossom Festival, many hotels offer Festival packages, and several restaurants offer special meals and drinks with a cherry blossom theme. Be sure to ask! If you’re looking for something new in the city, be sure to check out The Wharf, the newest waterfront redevelopment. The area is located south of the National Mall and is filled with hotels, restaurants, and shops. The Wharf is a great jumping off location for easy access to monuments, museums, and other attractions. If this isn’t your first trip to the city, you’ll enjoy exploring this newly developed area on the southwest shore of the Potomac River. Usher in spring by asking your travel agent to set up a memorable cherry blossom season trip to Washington D.C. Furry Friends Feeling Feeble? Get Compassionate Care at Mobile Animal Clinic

By Marge Shoemaker

Do you consider your pet to be a member of your family? Many people do. Most of the doctors and the 16 staff members at Mobile Animal Clinic have their own pets. Some even bring their furry family members to work. Peanut, a cavalier King Charles spaniel, comes to work every day with Dr. Ellis Jensen. Peanut may often be found sitting at the reception desk or roaming the halls, making sure everything is going well. Dr. Melissa Curfman keeps a water bowl by her desk for her Newfoundland. Dr. Kati Lackovic has a great Dane named Layla who sometimes visits. Dr. Whitney Meyer brings Penny, her Pomeranian, to work every day. Gloria Jensen, the practice manager and Peanut’s “mom,” believes that having their own pets around makes their patients more at ease. “Our staff really loves animals,” she says. “They are comfortable working with them. Pets know this and respond accordingly. Everyone has developed good instincts in dealing with our patients.” As evidence of that comfort, the staff has extraordinary longevity of employment…14 years, on average for our licensed veterinary technicians. “For some of these technicians, this has been their only job since graduation,” Gloria states proudly. “So many people change jobs in just a few years; we’re really proud that they stay with us.” That consistency helps build a sense of teamwork and family that pets and clients can feel. Veterinary medicine, like human medicine, changes all the time. Clinic doctors attend conferences, classes, and meetings in order to stay on top of the sometimes challenging changes. Unlike some offices, Mobile Animal Clinic doctors and staff don’t go to conferences as a group. They find it more efficient to send individuals to events with agendas that match individual interests. “Every Monday, our doctors meet for an hour,” Gloria explains, “and they talk about cases or share new information that one of them has picked up at a symposium or in the literature.” Sometimes, doctors come across an unfamiliar situation. In those cases, the whole group takes time to discuss it, sharing experience and knowledge with each other. Back in 1967, Mobile Animal Clinic really was mobile. They had two vans that would circle the city from opposite directions—a practice that enabled them to see the most patients without backtracking. This concept worked well when a member of the family was likely to be at home during the day. “As double family employment became more common, we had to change our procedure,” Gloria recalls. They have been at their current location since 1987. At first, they maintained a schedule of house calls, even as some clients brought their pets into the clinic. In 2011, they decided to operate strictly out of the

66

March 2018

office. “Even though we weren’t ‘mobile’ anymore,” Gloria relates, “our clients knew us as l-r: Dr. Melissa Curfman, ‘Mobile Animal Clinic,’ so we kept the name.” Dr. Kati Lackovic, Dr. Ellis Jensen, and At Mobile Animal Clinic, they care for small Dr. Whitney Meyer animals, including cats, dogs, rabbits, ferrets, rats, and hedgehogs. “I’ve found that small animals are not that different from small people,” Gloria says with a smile. “They respond to tenderness and care. The biggest difference is that they can’t tell us what is wrong or where it hurts.” Mobile Animal Clinic services include, but are not limited to, basic care, annual physical exams, core vaccinations, and heartworm checks. “We give a ‘nose to tail’ exam to make sure we find anything that may be wrong,” Gloria explains. She calls it “preventive medicine” and likens it to people having annual doctor visits. “We see our patients from puppyhood through their senior years,” she says. As animals age, lab work is required more often in order to provide early treatment of conditions that could become more serious, such as heart trouble or kidney disease or malfunction. The attitude of the doctors and staff at Mobile Animal Clinic is to provide the best possible care for their patients. “Whenever we perform a procedure on an animal-patient, we go through it with the human-client, explaining what and why we are doing something,” Gloria concludes. This type of education, they believe, helps their clients make knowledgeable decisions about their pets’ care. Client Sue relates her experience when her basset hound needed care. “They were friendly and open from the start. They listened to our concerns. Then they explained what would have to be done to help Humphrey get better. The whole staff is compassionate and knowledgeable,” she says enthusiastically. Mobile Animal Clinic is located at 2437 South 120th Street, in Omaha. They can be reached by phone at 402-333-3847 and online at www. mobileanimalclinicpc.com. They are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday and Wednesday; 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday; and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. They are closed Sundays. WE

The Green Thumb

The Birth of Passion You and Your Garden By Sharon Knierim

It’s enjoyable to witness a gardener evolve from someone who simply purchases a big blooming geranium and shows it off on the patio. What’s absolutely thrilling, for any gardener, is to watch as a passionate gardener is born. This type of birth is not like that of a human baby or, indeed, any new life in the animal kingdom. Passionate gardeners tend to evolve over the years as they hone their skills and increase their knowledge (and love of growing things) season after season. What may begin as a person performing simple garden chores or as an attempt to “keep up” with the neighbors’ yards and gardens often becomes an infatuation filled with lots of fervor. Who among us hasn’t purchased a six-pack of marigolds from the local supermarket and plunked them into the ground? Hey, those six marigolds look good…wouldn’t six petunias look really terrific accompanying those gold and orange beauties? You see what I mean. If you are a beginning gardener, it is best to start your journey with annuals. These are plants that grow and bloom for one season only. They are wonderful learning tools! Planting them will give you information on soil conditions, sunlight availability, and the ground’s characteristics regarding moisture retention. The best growing conditions are often the same or similar for both perennials and annual plantings, but it is good practice to begin gardening with plants that are inexpensive and can be mixed and matched in

successive seasons. There are lots of annuals to plant, and so many of them look so good together! Whether you decide to plant seeds or to use seedlings, the results will be very satisfying, and the lessons to be learned from either choice are beyond value. Many gardeners begin their journey with indirect exposure from other gardeners. Lots of children help parents and other adults in gardens and so learn a few tricks of the trade. Once exposed to gardening as a youngster, the “seeds are sown,” so to speak. When asked about their first experiences in a garden, most gardeners will remember helping out in a garden as a child. Living on this planet, we cannot help witnessing plants and nature everywhere we look. Whether inside or out of doors, there are trees, shrubs, flowers, and all manner of growing plants everywhere. Even areas and locations that have been denuded of all plant life for homebuilding, road expansion, or business parks are

always replanted and landscaped. Just as in our own personal gardens, these areas are most usually repopulated with plants that are suitable for their environment and climate conditions. If we begin our gardening routine with six marigolds and six petunias, it is a sure bet that, as the seasons pass, our little flower beds will most likely evolve into a landscape that reflects our passion for these most beautiful specimens of nature. Putting plants into the ground and caring for them may sound like just another chore, but that is not what gardening is. Much like parents anticipate the needs of their children, gardeners are intensely involved in their plants’ physical needs. Are the plants being watered enough or too much? Maybe a plant food would be beneficial. Do these flowers receive the correct amount of sunlight? Admit it—you, too, have run outdoors to blanket plants to protect them from hailstorms or early and unwelcome frosts. That’s passion! When we talk constantly about our gardens to other gardeners or to just about anyone who will listen, that’s passion. When we daydream about our gardens and what new and exciting things will happen during the next growing season, that’s passion. Gardening is never the same two days in a row. Gardening can be a solitary hobby or a group happening. Whether or not you garden with other people, you will not be alone. A well-planned and well-tended landscape will bring to you a wealth of wildlife, ranging from bees and butterflies to rabbits and squirrels and, occasionally, an uninvited deer. Of course, don’t forget the birds that frequent plentiful landscapes. With the addition of a bird bath or two and a feeding station, you can better enjoy the colorful and musical friends of the garden. Be sure to plant something for the birds to eat! They will appreciate this during the warm months and during the cold periods of winter when food is scarce for them. If you feel passionate about your garden, spring may well be your favorite time of year! Whether you’re implementing this season’s phase of a years-long plan or heading out to buy your first six-pack of marigolds, welcome to spring, and welcome to the garden. Day Care for Dogs and Cats Is Your Pet Ready to Board? By Elizabeth French

Whether you’re going on a vacation or working long hours at the office, you’ll need somewhere for your pet to stay sooner or later. Finding care for your pet can be a stressful task. How do you know if your pet is getting good care while you’re not there? Good news—the pet boarding industry is growing, so it’s easier than ever to find a great place for your pet to take a break. If you’re going out of town, be sure to make reservations early. The peak season for pet boarding is typically during the summer months and at Christmas and other major holidays—just when you and everyone else is likely to go on a trip. Staying in town? There is a cornucopia of doggy day cares that will groom, feed, and give your dog plenty of playtime with other dogs so you won’t have to come home to a rambunctious rover at the end of a long work day. Some pet boarders have entire facilities dedicated to the task. Places like your local groomer, veterinarian, or even some private homes may also be open to caring for your dog or cat (some places take dogs and cats; some are devoted to one type of animal only). With popular services such as 24/7 on-site care and an on-call veterinarian, temperature-controlled environments, walks twice a day, and unlimited playtime, doggy day care can be a social dog’s dream come true. Some facilities offer one-on-one play and even spa-like services to create the perfect relaxing getaway! Some boarders offer electronic monitoring, allowing you to check on your pet any time, day or night, in real time. Cats can be pampered as much as their canine compatriots. Private “apartments” with climbing towers and separate litter boxes, individual playtime with staff members, and the option to room in with other cats from the same household are some common features. Cats are notoriously picky eaters, so it will probably help lower everyone’s anxiety level if you bring your cat’s favorite food. Be sure your kennel separates large and small dogs. Larger dogs can see their smaller counterparts as prey, and innocent playing can turn into a dangerous situation if not monitored properly. The best practice is to have separate areas for different sizes of dogs, to avoid any unhealthy conflict. Always take a tour of a boarding facility before booking a stay for your pet. Trusting your instincts as well as your five senses will give you an indication of whether a place is right for you. Any offensive odors or lack of ventilation can be indicative of unsanitary conditions and may lead to common ailments such as “kennel cough” or worse. Even the busiest of kennels should not reek of doggy odors. Next, inspect the kennels themselves to ensure they are tidy, clean, and properly ventilated. Don’t be afraid to ask how often the kennels are cleaned. Indoor and outdoor running areas should also maintain their

cleanliness. All reputable and qualified boarders should be more than willing to show potential clients where their dogs are kept and exercised. If they are not, walk out and don’t look back. Many boarders require proof of vaccinations prior to check-in. This policy helps ensure the safety of all the animals on the premises. Be sure to ask whether a veterinarian is on call. If your pet requires medicine or other special treatment, bring it up before booking. Some facilities are specifically geared toward pets with special needs. Separation anxiety is common, especially if your pet has never stayed away from home without you. Anxiety can manifest itself in many ways, so look for behaviors such as excessive barking or whining, destroying objects, or scratching doors and walls. To calm them as much as possible, bring their favorite toys, treats, and blankets, so they have the smells of home to relax them while you are away. Even a pillowcase that smells like you would be a welcome reprieve from all the foreign smells of a kennel. Before leaving your dog with a boarder or doggy day care for an extended stay, it is also possible to work on your pet’s anxiety by leaving it for shorter periods of time, gradually building up. Your veterinarian can offer other helpful suggestions. If your dog is naturally social, look for a kennel with a busy schedule for its dogs. Finding a kennel with plenty of exercise time, walking, and socialization with other dogs can alleviate stress and can be great fun for your dog. Once you have selected a place that fits your needs, be sure to make good-byes short, sweet, and upbeat. Animals can sense your emotions. The more excited you are to get on with your vacation, the happier your pet will be! Positive Perspective

Alter Your Attitude Seek Your Joy How is your day going? Have you made a decision to look for those things that make you feel good while seeing and/or doing them? Are you feeling alive, happy, passionate? As you read these words, is your gut reaction “She is describing me to a T” or one of “Who is she—Pollyanna reincarnated?” “The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.” —William James The great thing about being on this planet is that every single moment of every single day, we get to decide how we are going to feel. We have the freedom to make the decision that we are going to take our present moment and seek our joy—or we can take this moment and make the decision to be miserable. “Your choices of actions may be limited—but your choices of thought are not.” —Abraham/Hicks Making the decision to look for those things that make us feel good allows the Universe the ability to deliver to us what we have been asking for. Making the decision to continue to see and do those things that make us feel bad will continue to deliver to us the life that we keep saying we don’t want. By making a conscious decision

to cultivate and nurture those thoughts that feel good while we’re thinking them, will not only make us feel good while we’re doing them, it will also change this experience that we call reality. “Practice scenarios that feel good—and never mind reality. Reality is only a brief moment in time that you keep repeating.” —Abraham/Hicks So, how do we start? It’s very simple. Take a moment and write down those things that feel good to you. “Raindrops on roses, whiskers on kittens….” Write down those things that make you smile. Write down those things that make you feel good while they’re happening, that make you feel appreciative. Write down those people who bring you joy. Then, every day, before you get out of bed, take time to pluck a few of them off the page and make them come alive in your mind. Make a decision to create, in this moment, a joyful experience of your reality! “The remarkable thing we have is a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past…We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude.” —Charles Swindoll
