Happy Mother’s Day! Points of Interest
I’m not sure why, but my mother has been on my mind A LOT the last few months. My mother, Anne, passed in 1993, at the very young age of 67. I was only 38 years old. My mother was such a wise woman. I know that even more now than I did back in 1993. She was very tiny—5 feet, 3 inches. When she dressed up, she always wore high heels to make her feel taller! I have recently had several conversations about Mom with my brother, Tom. All six of us kids loved our mom. In our conversations, Tom came up with a question that I find myself asking all the time: “What would Mom think?” This question is so great! I think of Mom watching over all of her kids now, taking it all in, looking at the lives we are living. At times, I see her glowing with pride and joy. At other times, a look of concern comes over her face. My goal is to make her smile on me every single day. I know that all Mom wanted for all six of us was for us to be happy. When we were not happy, I believe she literally could feel our pain. I believe that is no different today, even though she has passed on. There was a time after Mom passed that I didn’t feel her presence. It was as if she needed some alone time to reconnect with herself. As I said, though, I have felt her around a lot in the last few months…and it feels wonderful. Mothers are always going to be with us, whether they are physically focused or not. I found a quote that summed it up, though I don’t know who said it: “Your mother is your first friend, your best friend, your forever friend.” I am so happy that I have reconnected with my mom. She is as strong as she was when she passed. She is still here to help and listen to me. She is one helluva woman. If you are blessed enough to have your mother still physically focused, make the whole month special for her…not just one day. If she has passed, then please open yourself to letting her back into your life. I guarantee that you will find joy and peace in the process. What could be better than that? Happy Mother’s Day to all. See you next month…the 32nd anniversary of Women’s Edition! P.S. I wanted to let all of you know that in just a few days, Roxy Orr, my Operations Manager, will be with Women’s Edition for 30 YEARS. I want to thank her from the bottom of my heart. Thank you Roxy for always being there and for being my friend! Thank you for putting up with all my craziness. We couldn’t do this without you!

Fashion Favorites Are Blooming How to Mix in the Hot Trends
By Holly Bell
We are all so grateful when we hear those birds singing, announcing the arrival of spring. With longer evenings and warmer temperatures, it’s time to start transitioning your wardrobe. This offers some exciting challenges. It’s fun to mix some of the season’s hot trends with your existing pieces to bring a fresh look to your wardrobe. Luckily, this year’s spring collections are definitely user-friendly when it comes to mixing it up for innovative looks that are personally you! Your wardrobe may or may not already include a lot of purple, but Pantone’s color of the year, ultra violet, is surprisingly versatile. Add a springy feel to all your winter grays and blacks by bringing in this color with a top or scarf. As the weather warms, violet pairs perfectly with white for a breezy, fresh-looking summer outfit. On the spring runway, there was no lack of sheer fabrics and ruffles, though most of us would only wear the sheerest intonations with a great camisole underneath. Beautiful botanical prints and highly saturated hues go organic this season with oversized flowers and leaves. It appears that designers want us to be thoroughly feminine this spring and summer. Best loved are the floaty, sheer dresses, often in floral patterns. These dresses feature an easy cut that skims the body and is sheer comfort. Tassels and fringe are on the comeback trail this year. Adding these fun details into our wardrobes brings a bit of whimsy and sass to our more conservative winter wardrobe.
If you’re like me, you often want to wear your pretty spring clothing before the temperature fully cooperates. Go ahead and wear that spring dress—just add one of the longer sweaters or cardigans that have been so serviceable throughout the winter. The classic jean jacket is another good choice to throw over a summer frock. It adds a bit of edge and modernity to a summer floral. Classics are the backbone of every woman’s wardrobe. Fashion expert Jess Cartner-Morley notes that fashion trends used to last mere months, while today’s fashion consists of “five-year trends.” I love this! It means

that many more of our favorite new looks have become classics. For instance, take the statement sleeve. Trumpetflared sleeves were introduced a couple of years ago and are still going strong. Americana and nautical looks have been around for many years, but we still see new versions popping up every year. (You can’t really go wrong with red, white, and blue for summer—always a good investment.) Glitter is on trend again this summer, along with sequin embellishments and metallic fabrics. It makes sense for this to be on a five-year trend. People will always love to sparkle, and we’ll always want a few pieces of glitter in our wardrobes. Glinting in the summer sun, sequins and metallics offer us a chance to reflect—literally. We’re probably all familiar with the term “mom jeans” as poking a little fun at the high-waisted, front-pleated denim many women were wearing in the 1980s and early 1990s. This style was supposed to have been worn by wornout moms who didn’t care about fashion but just wanted to be comfortable. The style was considered to be very unflattering to the wearer’s figure. Well, guess what? Mom jeans are back, but they’re better! Modern “mom jeans” feature a high waist with a more flattering flat front. The leg is moderately loose but sleek-cut and looks cute rolled up for summer. Once we get used to wearing these comfy jeans again, I think it will be hard to give them up. The spring and summer collections of 2018 offer a multitude of exciting and fun possibilities. Working with the classics and separates you already own, start mixing in some of the hot new trends and opening up your mind to fresh ideas. Breathe in the gorgeous colors of the botanical prints and revel in the bright, highly saturated colors. Summer is on its way! Veggie Quiche
VEGGIE QUICHE
Cut up an assortment of fresh vegetables, like mushrooms, zucchini, asparagus, and onions (you will need a total of 1 cup of chopped veggies). Sauté veggies for 2–3 minutes and pour into a premade pie crust. Add 1 cup of shredded cheese (any kind you like). Beat 4 eggs with 1 cup of milk and 1 cup of heavy cream or evaporated milk. Pour the mixture into the pie shell over the veggies. Top with thinly sliced tomatoes, sliced green onions, or both. Bake at 350 degrees for 45–60 minutes, until it does not jiggle. Let sit for 5 minutes before slicing. Mother’s Day Pancakes with Fresh Strawberry Sauce For the sauce: Clean, stem, and cut up 2 cups of strawberries. Put berries in a saucepan. Retire From Your House, Not From Your Life Sunridge Village Retirement Community By Marge Shoemaker
A recent television ad really sums it up: “Sunridge Village—a retirement community for people who are anything but retiring, yet want freedom from work and worries of home ownership.” This 55+ retirement community caters to very active people. Residents travel, they volunteer, they live their lives! I recently spoke with Michale Kavan, the marketing director for Sunridge Village, to get a sense of why people choose Sunridge Village. Michale wanted me to hear it from the residents themselves. I ended up talking to four residents who shared the various reasons why they left their previous homes to live at Sunridge Village. Virgil lived in Omaha until work required a move to Alabama. “I had a relative who owned a dance studio in Omaha,” Virgil recalls. “He moved to Sunridge Village and has lived here for nearly seven years.” Virgil was impressed with how accommodating Sunridge Village is and the personal attention that was given to his relative. “Many of the staff that were here then are still here now,” Virgil states. “That means a lot.” After becoming a widower, Virgil decided to return to Omaha and to his family. “I get to watch my grands and greats grow up. They’re all good kids…I’m proud of them!” he grins. Lois and her husband built their house in Omaha in 1956. Over the years, both the house and the neighborhood started to decline. “There were so many things…leaky roof, rusty water heater, furnace, A/C… all expensive projects to take care of,” she recalls. When her husband passed, she thought about moving to a senior living community but wasn’t happy with the places she had visited. “They seemed so impersonal,” Lois confides. “They were big places and there was no interaction…no residents about, having coffee, playing cards, or talking.” Lois’ friends, who live near Sunridge, encouraged her to visit. “I felt at home the minute I walked in the door and saw that inviting sitting room,” she says. She didn’t sign up right away. “My initial choice of a small one-bedroom apartment was not available, so I opted for a slightly larger floorplan.” Now, she brags, “I have the best apartment in the whole building. I don’t miss my house at all!” Darlene and her husband lived in a small town in Missouri for nearly 60 years. Moving to Omaha (at their son’s suggestion) was a big decision. After her husband had a stroke, they knew they could no longer take proper care of their home. They’d visited a cousin who had lived at Sunridge Village, so they knew how close it was to their kids and grandkids. “We didn’t know anybody there, but we knew from visiting

Cousin Connie that it was a nice place,” Darlene says. “Everyone’s friendly here, just like the little town I Residents Virgil, came from!” Mary, Darlene, and Sunridge Village resident Mary and her husband Lois in the Sunridge lived in Tennessee and New Mexico, eventually moving Village Retirement to a condo in Omaha. After her husband passed, Mary Community library considered moving to California to be near her son, but “I couldn’t see paying double the rent I was paying here,” she relates. Plus, she didn’t want to leave her friends in Omaha, who she also considers to be family. “I’ve always liked to travel, and I still do. I decided to list my condo and look for a place that would be secure and would have some activities but would allow me the freedom to travel.” Sunridge Village is just the place. Darlene, Virgil, Lois, and Mary all comment that the activities offered at Sunridge Village are an important part of what makes it so great. They mention things like bridge, mah-jongg, Wii bowling, a putting green, and poker games. Sunridge Village offers a wide variety of activities to encourage an active lifestyle and social interaction among the residents, and it works! Their comments were unanimous: “This location is close to everything.” “We can use Uber if we can’t (or don’t want to) drive or if the Sunridge bus isn’t available (which isn’t often).” “Chef Gene makes the best meals!” “The underground parking is wonderful.” “It’s quiet…can’t hear the neighbors.” “Richard and his family [the Anzalones, who own Sunridge Village] are the best! They really care.” Sunridge Village Retirement Community is located at 13410 Blondo Street, in Omaha. Call 402-496-0116 to arrange a tour. April 20–May 20
Happy birthday, Taurus! The shifting of the planets gives you an opportunity to take a break from personal ambitions and career goals and allow yourself time to dream. Mars moves into the Taurus zodiac, which improves your energy and enhances your physical capabilities. Be aware that this could cause you to become more aggressive. Overall, your atmosphere will be peaceful. You’ll see an improvement in family environment. Gemini (May 21–June 20) Your copious amounts of energy will aid you in achieving your professional goals. Notice financial improvements as well, which may be credited to the moon, your money planet. Cancer (June 21–July 22) This is the time to follow your own path, although cooperation from others will be beneficial in accomplishing your goals. Activities with friends and family will ignite more than usual this month. Leo (July 23–Aug 22) Your independence and free will is becoming stronger every day. Slowly but surely, things are moving your way. Your accomplishments will seem effortless.
Capricorn (Dec 23–Jan 19) Due to the presence of the sun in the House of Fun and Entertainment, life will seem more amusing and thrilling. A new partnership could develop! Aquarius (Jan 20–Feb 18) This is the ideal time to dream about future career goals and formulate a plan to make them materialize. To make these dreams last, be mindful of social grace and adaptability.
Virgo (Aug 23–Sep 22) To meet your goals, you will need to adjust to other people around you. Allow things to happen! Try to go with the flow and accept the results with equanimity. Libra (Sep 23–Oct 22) This month is about cleansing your mind and body. Free yourself of all unwanted impurities and toxins. This will prepare your mind for spiritual expansion. Scorpio (Oct 23–Nov 21) Social activities are vigorous and enjoyable. Use them to enhance your professional growth.
Sagittarius (Nov 22–Dec 22) Your domestic life, along with psychological health, is more significant than your professional life this month. Maintain your health by taking more breaks and engaging in spiritual healing.
Pisces (Feb 19–Mar 20) Scholarly goals and education are taking up much of your attention this month. Don’t forget that personal desires and family matters are just as important. More relaxation may be necessary to find the right balance. Aries (Mar 21–Apr 19) You are mindful of financial prosperity, spirituality, and cleansing your body of impurities this month. Something Shiny This Way Comes A Mother’s Advice
By Sharon Knierim
If you are or ever have been a mother, you’ll easily recognize what a struggle it can be to actually be heard by your own children. Though we feel that they are not often listening and certainly not heeding our warnings or accepting our advice, don’t give up. Something shiny this way comes. If you wait long enough (and I’m talking years here), something amazing happens when your children have children of their own. Most grandmothers can tell you that there comes a time, slowly but surely, when our children magically (but oh so unhurriedly) begin to offer counsel and guidance to their own offspring. The first few times you hear it, you may think that your hearing has started to fail or that you have entered into some crazy kind of time warp. Keep your ear to the ground, mothers—isn’t that the very same advice you proffered just a few years ago to your own child? Could it be possible? Before you laugh, consider this: Where did you learn these words of wisdom? That’s right. You most likely heard them from your very own mother, who probably got the word from her mother before that. Mother’s advice is always good. Mother’s intentions are always good. Most of the problem seems to be in the delivery

of this golden information, which can sometimes sound like opinion or judgment even if it’s not (and definitely when it is). Most often, like any other bit of counsel, mother’s advice should be and often is watered down to make it more user-friendly and acceptable. Of course, the kind of advice no one likes is that which we do not ask for and do not want but seems to come to us, anyway. (Amazingly, much of this unwanted and unsolicited information is correct, at least on some level.) Unwanted advice can turn some of us into amateur rebels as we attempt

to prove that we know what we’re doing and that we don’t need any help to accomplish what we’ve set out to do. This can be painful for both the advisor and advisee. As we all know, and I’m including this formerly naive youngster, unwelcome consequences can often be the harvest of not thinking something through before diving in. Sometimes, it’s hard to listen to what is really best for us. Problems can arise when we think that we know better than someone who has already lived through the same situation and needed to make the same or similar decisions that we are currently making. In actuality, receiving this kind of advice is like catching the brass ring. When you think about it, it’s very lucky to find someone who is close to us, cares deeply for us, and is willing to share those experiences and the feelings and emotions she has already lived through. Why do we so often turn our backs on this advice, much of which is tendered by Dear Old Mom? It must have something to do with wanting to assert our own independence as we move toward our own adulthood. Ironically, this is one of the most childish things we could do. Well, anyway, let’s get back to the good part. That’s the part where the mother (that’s you and me) is always right…or is at least hoping to be right most of the time. Just a few days ago, my own grown daughter said to me, “Mom, you were right about so many things.” Naturally, I pretended I didn’t hear her correctly, so I could ask her to please say it again. She did. I have heard her dancing around this subject a few times before, but this time she actually said it out loud to me. In fact, she said it twice! My dear daughter really hit the ball out of the park with the next thing she said. “Mom, one day, I opened my mouth, and you stepped out.” She was really shocked. Aha! She must have been listening after all. If I was right, that means my own mother was right, and so was her mother. It must run in the family. How lucky for us. As we stop and celebrate Mother’s Day, try to remember how your mother advised you and what golden advice you offered to your own children. See how much of it is the same! I hope all the mothers and daughters out there enjoy the holiday. One last thing: Dear daughters, the next time you have the chance to offer your mother some advice, go right ahead. She’ll probably love it. WE

Granite & Cabinet Nation Bringing Kitchen Dreams to Life
By Marge Shoemaker
Spring is a time of renewal and growth that inspires us to make changes we’ve been dreaming about. Is your kitchen one of the things you’ve been wanting to change? Have you been flipping through design magazines, checking out ideas online, and waiting for the right time to put your plans into action? It’s time to turn your kitchen dreams into reality, and Granite & Cabinet Nation is here to help. Granite & Cabinet Nation offers a variety of countertop and cabinet styles to meet the needs of homeowners whose kitchens need a face lift. Yong Liu, the owner and project manager, notes that “clients often don’t know what is available when they start a kitchen project.” He invites us to come to his store and discover the options. Yong decided to enter the kitchen design business after leaving the military. Having worked in construction, Yong knew that kitchen design and remodeling would be a good fit for him. He worked in Kansas City and Dallas prior to coming to Omaha about 18 months ago. Most of his former crew came with him. Some kitchens need cabinets of unusual shapes and sizes; in that case, custom cabinetry may be the best choice. Many kitchens, however, have cabinets in standard sizes. For those kitchens, why pay more for custom cabinets when you can get beautiful, highquality standard cabinets for less? That’s where Granite & Cabinet Nation comes in. “We offer basic plywood (not particle board) box cabinets with solid maple doors in an assortment of styles and colors,” Yong shares. Yong notes that all the cabinets he sells are KCMAcertified. As described on their website, the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA) is a “non-profit organization founded in 1955 to represent companies who manufacture kitchen, bath, or other residential cabinets, and key industry suppliers. It works to advance the industry through advocacy, setting standards, sponsoring research, and providing management tools and educational programs.” Thanks to this KCMA certification, Yong shares, customers can rest assured that all of the hinges and glides used in their cabinets have been thoroughly tested for quality and durability. As the name implies, Granite & Cabinet Nation also offers countertops: in granite, marble, and quartz or quartzite. They take the time to educate their customers on the different types of materials. These materials are long-lasting and should be considered permanent. Granite and marble are natural stones, mined from the earth. The natural variation in the stone means that no two slabs look exactly alike, but slabs are generally
18
May 2018
sold in bundles to offer as much continuity of design as possible. “If a client decides to use one of these materials, she needs to know that the pattern changes with each cutting,” Yong advises. “It’s all part of the education on materials we offer.” It also means that if you see a slab you love, you should claim it! Nothing quite like it will come again. Quartz and quartzite countertops are man-made (natural quartz is blended with resins and pigments). These materials have fewer flaws and a more consistent pattern or design. All are easily maintained with soap and water, and they are highly resistant to stains, cutting, and burn marks. Yong has noticed a trend for these materials—owners of upscale apartments are choosing them for their beauty and durability. “As it becomes necessary to redo older units, owners are switching over to more permanent materials,” Young shares. Granite & Cabinet Nation also carries a selection of sinks, in stainless steel and quartzite (a matte-finish, man-made material that is resistant to stains and other damage). “All the materials are easy to maintain,” Yong says. One thing Yong loves about kitchen design is the opportunity to see a project from conception to completion. “When I was in construction, we only saw part of the project,” he explains. “Here, we work with our clients on design, product selection, and installation. It’s very satisfying.” Yong thinks that remodeling should be fun and that too many options actually makes it less likely that you’ll be satisfied with what you choose. “I hate to see clients stressed out over decisions,” he opines. “We have limited our choices to take away some of the stress. We want you to be happy with what you have chosen.” He uses design software to show clients what their finished kitchen could look like. “I think that especially helps clients who are having difficulty imagining the final project,” Yong states. Yong is enthusiastic about educating his clientele. “Come in and talk,” he concludes. “Learn about the materials. When you know the pros and cons, you can make an educated decision that is relatively stressfree.” Granite & Cabinet Nation is located at 13805 Industrial Road, in Omaha. Fresh Concept
Revitalize at a Med Spa Affordable and Fast Body and Skin Treatments By Kylie Gumpert
We could all use a little TLC here and there, especially as we age. Some of us dive into cosmetic procedures and don’t look back. For those of us who want a more conservative approach, a medical spa is an excellent place to explore minimally invasive or noninvasive procedures that are highly effective. According to the American Med Spa Association, a medical spa (med spa, for short) is a hybrid between a traditional day spa and an aesthetic medical center that offers non-surgical services. Med spas can offer more aggressive treatments for skin than you would see at a day spa, including chemical peels, more invasive wrinkle treatments, and light therapies. These procedures are often performed or supervised by registered nurses, dermatologists, or physician assistants. What kinds of treatments do most medical spas offer? Let’s start with the least invasive treatments. Oxygen facials, microdermabrasion, and medical-grade skin care are some of the med spa treatments that aim to stimulate healing, treat acne or acne scarring, reduce pore size, improve circulation, and decrease inflammation. Oxygen facials, which are good choices for people with sensitive skin, involve several steps. First, the face is cleansed and exfoliated. The aesthetician or medical professional may also help unclog pores. She may apply a mask or moisturizer and then use an airbrush to apply oxygen directly to the face. This helps replenish oxygen levels in the skin, which helps skin look healthier and brighter. There are two types of microdermabrasion. One type involves a tool that sprays tiny, exfoliating crystals onto the skin. The crystals and dead skin are then sucked up through a small vacuum. A newer approach involves a diamond-tipped wand that is moved across the skin, exfoliating along the way. Either method may cause irritation or redness, especially if you have sensitive skin. Medical-grade or pharmaceutical skin care products penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and contain higher amounts of active ingredients. This makes them more powerful than over-the-counter products that are developed to impact just the skin’s surface layer. Products might include a vitamin C serum to help reverse sun damage or a potent topical spot treatment for acne. Some of these products can increase sensitivity to sunlight or cause dryness and irritation. Most of them require a prescription. More invasive procedures are generally used to treat acne or acne scarring, rejuvenate the skin by stimulating new cell production, and improve the look of wrinkles. Because these treatments could result in bodily harm if administered incorrectly, it’s important to make sure the right person is performing them. You should undergo a medical exam prior to treatment to ensure the treatment is safe for you. Requirements for who can perform treatments in a medical spa vary by state, so you need to do your
20

homework on the procedure you plan to have. A general rule is that a medical professional who is at least a registered nurse should perform medical spa treatments that involve a needle, scalpel, or laser. Advanced acne treatments include red and blue light therapy, photodynamic therapy, and photopneumatic therapy. These therapies all use light to treat stubborn acne. With red and blue light therapy, the patient lies under a light device for around 20 minutes. This light penetrates the skin’s deeper layers, helping to kill bacteria that cause blemishes and reducing sebum (oil) production. The longterm effectiveness of these treatments is currently being researched. Photopneumatic therapy, such as Isolaz, is FDAapproved for treating blackheads and whiteheads. Its wand shines intense pulsed light (IPL) to help open pores, while an attached vacuum helps unclog pores and collect oil and dead skin cells. It may cause mild redness afterwards, but it is virtually painless, and patients can immediately resume regular activities. Photodynamic therapy can help treat cystic acne, one of the trickiest forms to tame. First, a solution that makes skin more sensitive to light is applied to the face and left on for up to 3 hours. Then, blue or red light or, sometimes, more powerful lasers are shone onto the skin for around 20 minutes. This treatment is painful, and patients need to avoid sunlight for at least two days afterwards. Patients should expect redness, peeling, and itching for up to two weeks. The sebaceous glands sustain damage during this therapy, so be sure to discuss the pros and cons with your dermatologist. Skin rejuvenation treatments, such as dermabrasion, dermaplaning, and microneedling, help stimulate the body to produce new skin cells. This can improve tone, texture, and fine lines and wrinkles, giving you a refreshed look. Dermabrasion is used to reduce the visibility of scars and some wrinkling. Treatment involves a qualified professional injecting numbing medicine into different areas of the face, after which your skin will be cleaned. A tool with a high-speed, abrasive brush or wheel will be used to remove irregularities. Dermabrasion is only recommended for those with lighter skin tones, as it can cause discoloration or scarring on darker skin. Dermaplaning is used to reduce the appearance of acne scarring, as well as to improve skin tone and texture.
www.womensedition.com
A medical professional will use a scalpel to scrape away the topmost layers of skin, smoothing the overall complexion. There is usually little pain, but anesthesia may be used if the patient desires it. Microneedling can help reduce the signs of aging and improve acne scarring and skin tone. During this treatment, tools like the FDA-approved SkinPen, which contains tiny needles that pierce the skin’s pores, are used to stimulate the body’s natural healing response. This can cause the skin to tighten, improves texture, is safe on all skin tones, and can be used on other parts of the body. For wrinkle removal, nothing beats a surgical face lift. However, several less invasive treatments offer real improvement in this area. Such treatments include Botox injections, dermal fillers, the liquid facelift, and chemical peels. Products like Botox or Dysport are injected into the muscle and block the nerve signals that direct the muscles to contract. These injections result in diminished wrinkling in the treated area. During micro-Botox treatment, Botox is injected into the superficial layer of skin in areas such as the cheeks or chin. This results in pore minimization and tighter, younger-looking skin without affecting the underlying muscle. Belotero Balance, a dermal filler gel, can help minimize the appearance of stubborn lines or wrinkles around the lips. A medical professional will inject the filler, composed of hyaluronic acid, into these lines or wrinkles to essentially fill in the space beneath them. The filler naturally degrades over time, so results should last about six months. Filler-like Sculptra is FDA-approved and works by stimulating collagen production in your skin. It takes longer to work than a standard filler, but, since it increases your body’s natural production of collagen, more youthful-looking skin often lasts several months longer.
A liquid face lift utilizes dermal fillers and sometimes Botox to “lift” and revitalize different areas of the face. Filler injections can help decrease bags under the eyes or even lift the jowls. Results often last one or two years. Chemical peels, which can also be done on the neck and hands, are normally used to reduce fine wrinkles, sun damage, scars, and skin discoloration. There are generally three types: a superficial or light peel, a medium peel, and a deep peel. Chemical peels work best on patients with lighter skin tones. Increasingly powerful acids are used for each peel. Light peels gently exfoliate the surface layer of the skin. A medium peel also reaches the middle layer of skin, helping to remove damaged skin cells and improving age spots or fine wrinkles. A deep peel more deeply penetrates the middle layer of skin, removing fine lines, freckles, and some scars. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery notes that any particular patient can only undergo a single deep chemical peel. Recovery time ranges from up to a week for a light peel to around a month for a deep peel. It can also involve taking antiviral medication, using special creams, and avoiding exposure to sunlight. If you want to get rid of acne scars, improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles, or give your skin an overall revitalization, check out a local med spa. Their medical professionals have great options to help you look and feel younger and more beautiful without going under the knife. Out and About
Papio Creek Gems Custom Creations and Beautiful Beads By Elizabeth French
Kaffi and James MacNabb are the owners and operators of Papio Creek Gems, and they have been in business for over 16 years. Kaffi’s local, family-operated business is an extension of her background in retail and her lifelong passion for jewelry. Customers can rest assured that their jewelry is safe at Papio Creek Gems because it never leaves the store. “We can do everything in-house, from start to finish,” Kaffi shares. She works with her husband and their son, Martin, to design, create, clean, and repair jewelry, all right there in the shop. One interesting aspect of running a family business is traveling for work—as a family. For years, Kaffi and her family attended trade shows throughout the country to show their wares. One summer, they visited Oregon, California, Minnesota, Colorado, Utah, Texas, and Ohio. Time at trade shows gave their children lots of exposure to beads and gemstones. They would play poker at night and use gemstones as chips, Kaffi recalls. “We even had some rubies in the pot at one point,” she says, smiling. Currently, the business focuses primarily on gemstones and some costume jewelry. “I will always buy amethyst,” Kaffi says. “The question is only whether it is petite or big.” With new trends and styles coming out all the time, she always has her eye on what is new and exciting. “They discover a new stone, or they figure out a new way to treat the stone that changes the color,” explains Kaffi. She travels regularly to Asia to hand-pick the beads she wants to feature at the shop. At Papio Creek Gems, they specialize in customized jewelry creation. With custom gem setting, they can deftly individualize all kinds of jewelry, from beaded to wire-wrapped to wedding and engagement rings. If a stone has fallen out of a cherished pendant or ring and has been lost, Papio Creek Gems can custom-cut another stone to fit precisely into the void. Kaffi finds this type of work incredibly rewarding. “When a customer leaves absolutely thrilled with something that we have repaired or created, that’s the good stuff,” she confides. The team at Papio Creek Gems recently completed a fascinating project. They took a woman’s vintage set of crystal jewelry (earrings, necklace, and bracelet) and broke it down into a brand-new set that she could share with other members of her family. “She had us take it all apart, so everybody could get a piece of this favorite jewelry set,” Kaffi says. “We made a necklace for her, earrings and a pendant for her granddaughter, and eight bracelets for other female relatives.” Because of their dedication to every piece of jewelry, their customers always walk away satisfied, even when

Papio Creek Gems cannot complete their project. If something is beyond their scope, they will gladly recommend another local business. “I encourage people to stay with a locally owned and operated business,” Kaffi asserts. “I’ll send someone to another local store to get what she needs, with the hope that that store will reciprocate. I find that most stores do. I’d rather work with each other than against each other.” In addition to custom jewelry creation, cleaning, and repair, Papio Creek Gems is also a store that sells gems, beads, and other jewelry-making supplies to hobbyists, individuals who make jewelry for a living, and other jewelry stores all over the country. “We encourage customers to come in to see, touch, and compare products or bring in unfinished projects to find that perfect something to make it perfect. Colors can change immensely from stone to stone; to see it in person is the best way to compare.” Papio Creek Gems also offers a variety of classes to teach jewelry makers and hobbyists alike about the fine art of jewelry design. “We can always offer great advice on how to finish something,” Kaffi says. “I think our prices are phenomenal, and our customer service is stellar.” Her customers agree. “I love this store and the owners,” says customer Kathy Winters. “They are always helpful and have beautiful choices for my projects.” Papio Creek Gems offers local expertise in jewelry design, creation, and repair, as well as providing all the supplies and education you’ll need to start making your own jewelry. Support local business as they support you! If you are interested in finding out about more of what Papio Creek Gems has to offer, please call 402-9354367. Midwest Physical Therapy Motivating Patients With Care and Education
By Elizabeth French
Midwest Physical Therapy has opened its doors in a new and spacious location, in Suite 200 at 11640 Arbor Street. Owner Cheryl Wisinski is board-certified in women’s health and has been serving patients for more than 30 years. Cheryl specializes in healing pelvic floor issues, including incontinence, pelvic pain, painful intercourse, and other associated symptoms, including back pain that can result from weakness in the core muscles. Cheryl’s specialization in pelvic issues began when the need arose years ago in her general physical therapy practice. “In my process of seeing women with a sprained ankle or other injury, they would say, ‘I can’t do this exercise because I leak,’” Cheryl notes. At the time, very few institutions offered a specialty or doctoral degree program in the field. Even now, there are only 3,000 specialists in pelvic floor issues in the nation. Of these, roughly 500 are certified, and only two or three of them practice in the state of Nebraska. The new, larger office space can accommodate 20 to 25 patients per day, but that doesn’t mean they rush you
through your appointment. At Midwest Physical Therapy, the staff works hard to dedicate the appropriate amount of time and attention to each patient and to serve their individual needs to the fullest. A Day at the Spa The Perfect Mother’s Day Treat By Loretta McCollum
Mother’s Day is here, and it’s an opportunity for us to show our moms how much we care. What better way to express our appreciation for these amazing, selfless women than by treating them to a day of head-to-toe pampering, relaxation, and rejuvenation? A day spa experience provides exactly that. Most spas offer a full menu of body treatments, facials, and massages. Other services, such as manicures, pedicures, waxing, and even hairstyling and makeup application are standard at many facilities. Multiple package options are available—you can tailor the experience to your mother’s preferences. Some spas even offer food and drink. Can you say massage and merlot, or pedicure and paella? You could even make it a mother-daughter experience and treat yourself, as well. There’s nothing better than a good massage to relax tense muscles and break up those tight knots. To get the most out of your spa experience, be sure to choose the type of massage that’s right for you. The Swedish massage is a popular choice. It’s a great all-over massage that can be slow and gentle or more forceful and invigorating. In contrast, a deep tissue massage involves applying strong, constant pressure to deeper tissue and muscle structure. This is a
good choice for chronic muscle pain. You could also choose a hot stone massage, where the therapist places heated stones along your spine or in the palm of your hand. The warmth from the stones helps relax tight muscles. Want a body detox or an allover exfoliation and hydration? Consider a body wrap. A detox wrap draws impurities out of your system and provides your body with extra minerals. First, a body mask containing mud, clay, algae, or seaweed is applied. Then, you’re wrapped in plastic and covered with a blanket. The mask stimulates circulation, which helps rid the body of toxins. After 20 minutes, you jump into the shower to rinse off the mask. A hydrating body wrap uses a rich cream or gel to penetrate the skin following an exfoliating body scrub. While your skin soaks up the moisture, you’re relaxing, all wrapped up in a warm towel. In addition to detoxing and hydrating, different types of body wraps can also tone and tighten or ›››

temporarily boost metabolism. If you don’t want a wrap but still want some professional exfoliation, consider a relaxing body scrub, instead. A massage therapist rubs the skin with a blend of sea salt, oils, and aromatics. This is followed by a rinse in the shower. A moisturizer may be applied afterward. Including a facial treatment in a spa day helps us put our best face forward. Basic facials steam and cleanse the pores. Targeted anti-aging facials use alpha hydroxy creams to help skin look smooth and fresh. An antioxidant facial utilizes vitamin A, vitamin E, and beta-carotene to remove pollutants. No matter which option you choose, a facial will cleanse, improve skin tone, moisturize, tighten, and hydrate your skin for a smoother, healthy-looking face. Hair removal treatments such as waxing can be incorporated into your day spa experience. Razor shaving is like an engraved invitation to a Band-aid festival! Instead, take advantage of a hot wax treatment while you’re chilling in your comfy spa robe. Waxing removes unwanted hair at the root, leaving you smooth and slowing the regrowth process. Another popular site for hair removal is the eyebrows. Threading is an ancient practice that removes unwanted hairs by pulling them out at the follicle. It’s less painful than tweezing, and the regrowth process is much slower. After you’ve been hydrated, massaged, exfoliated, and smoothed, some facilities offer a light lunch and a glass of wine or mineral water, served up in a quiet room with soft music and a soothing waterfall. Then, it’s time to focus on the finishing touches like makeup and nails. With a makeup makeover, a trained aesthetician chooses shades and colors that best flatter your face and then shows you how to apply them to get the look you’re going for. Eyelash extensions are popular, and we’re not talking about drugstore false eyelashes. At a day spa, you can choose your lash length and curl style—plus, they’re professionally applied. The extensions typically last one to two months. Last but not least, sit back and relax with a drink while a technician trims, files, scrubs, and polishes your nails with your choice of colors. You’ll emerge from the spa looking and feeling like a new woman, ready to conquer the world. Doesn’t that sound like a fantastic gift for the woman who gave you everything? Happy Mother’s Day! You Can Change Your Thoughts Tomorrow Can Be a Better Day Sometimes I feel as if I’m living in a world that is determined to mess with my mind, mess with my attitude, and mess with my creation on this planet. I am one of the most optimistic people that I know. I consciously talk about what I want—not what “is.” When I talk with others, my goal is to leave them in a better place than before our interaction. On many occasions in my life, I have been told that I live in “la la land.” “What is reality anyway! It’s nothing but a collective hunch.” —Jane Wagner This feeling of being “messed with” often occurs when I make the mistake of actually watching the commercials that come over the airways versus fast-forwarding them on my DVR. If I were to believe what “they” are telling me, I’m destined to get some kind of disease and have to be on medication the rest of my life—however short that life might be! If I’m to believe “them,” I have to make it a point to be afraid all the time. (It doesn’t matter what it is that they are telling me to be afraid of. It changes minute by minute. A pandemic flu; the collapse of our financial system; the “reality” that when I retire, I’ll be financially destitute—or homeless, to boot!) “Are you a SNIOP? Someone who is Sensitive to the Negative Influence Of Others?” —Zig Ziglar

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like being messed with. When I’m being messed with, I very quickly feel like a victim. Feeling like a victim stinks. The good news, though, is this experience inevitably forces me to get a grip on my thoughts. It forces me to make a deliberate choice about what my self-talk is going to be. This is not a bad thing—it’s a good thing. (There’s that optimism rearing its ugly head again!) Thoughts are very powerful things in our lives. Thoughts help us move through our feelings. Thoughts can help us dig our way out of depression, frustration, irritation, annoyance—thoughts can help us move past those feelings that feel so bad. “Change your thoughts, and you change your world.” —Norman Vincent Peale I don’t like feeling bad. Feeling bad feels bad! “If if feels good, it’s good; if it feels bad, it’s bad.” —Abraham/Hicks We need to give ourselves permission to gently think our way to a better place. We have to realize that we did not get to this negative path in a split second. We need to realize that tomorrow will be another day. A better day. WE
Kids Comments
www.womensedition.com
Trust Yourself to Raise Your Kids There’s No One Right Way to Parent I’ve received some feedback on my March column about comparing our children. A mom named Lauren says she often finds herself coming out on the short end when comparing her children with those of her friends. “Other people’s kids seem so much better adjusted than mine,” she notes. “I sometimes wonder if I’m doing the right thing.” Lauren isn’t alone in questioning herself. At one time or another, we’ve all wondered if we’re doing right by our children. Each of us is an individual product of our own upbringing. Some of us have experienced unique hardships. Through various circumstances, we may be left raising young children by ourselves. Some of us work full time, while others stay at home with their children. Some of us have children dealing with debilitating illnesses or disabilities. Some of us live lives of relative ease and comfort while others struggle to make ends meet every day. We have to make decisions based on what we know. Children are as unique and individual as their parents. They grow and mature at their own pace. Johnny and Jimmy may be the same age, but their gene pool isn’t the same. Jimmy may be the tallest in his class now, but Johnny may catch up with or even pass him in height when they are adults. Linda and Lou may both love hosting tea parties now, but their social lives may be completely different later on. Bobbie’s family has relocated a lot; Bob’s family has lived in the same house all his life. No two kids, even from the

same family, have the same reaction to the same events in their lives. Comparing our kids to others rarely accomplishes anything positive. We think we’re using comparisons to ease our own anxieties, but we end up increasing our insecurities. We question ourselves. As parents, it’s our job to let the kids make mistakes and learn how to get along, just like we learn from our own mistakes. Allow the kids to follow their own drummers. Let them lead their own lives (with guidance) without the pressure of measuring up to the expectations of others. What’s my advice to parents who are questioning their childrearing skills? When you’re unsure, ask the experts, talk to friends and family, and get some advice. Then relax. Trust your intuition. Believe in yourself. You’re doing the best you know how with what you know now. Only through hindsight can we can judge our own actions. We may think now that we should (or could) have done something different in the past, but we didn’t, and we can’t change that. Our children are individuals. No two kids are alike, even when they’re from the same family. Comparing kids isn’t like comparing apples to apples. Remember, kids are people, too. Happy Mother’s Day! Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Create the Ultimate Kitchen Combine the Best in Form and Function By Robyn V. Powell
Years ago, kitchens were hidden in the back of the home and served simple functions: space for meal preparation, cleanup, and storage. Fast forward to 2018, and the kitchen has become the hub of the home. No matter the age of your house, adding a stylish, functional kitchen is one of the best investments you can make. Done well, a kitchen remodel can transform your lifestyle and add value to your home. Understanding the key elements and assembling the right team can make your dream kitchen a reality. For the past decade, the all-white kitchen has dominated. Simply beautiful and timeless, white kitchens aren’t going away anytime soon. Current trends, however, see breaking up all the white by staining or painting an island. Another way to punch up an all-white canvas is adding a stylish Spanish-style tile backsplash. For something a little more layered, consider gray cabinets. Soft and bold shades of gray add instant sophistication and are showing up in new kitchens everywhere. Cabinets are the backbone of a kitchen. While custom cabinets are the most expensive option, they offer the most creative freedom in terms of style, materials, and finishes. They are a great option for kitchens with an unusual shape or a unique design style. Customizing cabinetry allows for tailored features such as ceilingheight cabinets for added drama and additional storage space. Popular storage options include pull-out trash cans and under-sink drawers for cleaning supplies.

If your current cabinets are still in good shape and you don’t want to change the cabinet layout, you may want to consider a cosmetic refacing. New doors and drawer faces replace the old ones, giving the kitchen a new look without the inconvenience and cost of construction. Refacing options come in a wide variety. Wood veneers come in oak, maple, cherry, and birch and can be stained any color. Plastic laminate veneers are mid-priced, more moisture-resistant than wood, and very durable. Another growing trend is removing upper cabinets and installing open shelving. This makes the kitchen appear larger and brighter and allows the range hood to become a focal point. A customized range hood in copper or stainless steel sheeting with coordinating strapping and rivets is a great way to create a statement in your kitchen. A stylish and functional island is often the central feature in ›››

today’s kitchen. Some designs place the island between the kitchen and an adjacent living space, seamlessly connecting the rooms. Other ideas include a kitchen island table that can serve as an extension of the counter or as a place to eat. When equipped with a sink or cooktop, an island doubles as a prep surface and a natural gathering place to keep the cook company! Granite remains the most popular countertop choice, but man-made options are gaining ground. Non-porous quartz mimics natural stone but is easier to maintain and is resistant to heat, scratches, and stains. Thanks to advancing technology, there are now a multitude of colors and patterns to choose from. Concrete and stainless steel, classic marble, and butcher block are all popular countertop choices to add utility and style to any kitchen. No longer just an afterthought to countertops, backsplashes are getting the attention they deserve. Ceiling height, metallic or bold colors, large patterns, and graphic prints are all hot trends and offer an opportunity to add visual interest. While stainless steel and farm sinks remain popular, composite sinks are a growing trend. Made of the same material as countertops, these streamlined sinks create a uniform look and are easy to maintain. For the finishing touch, add a pot filler. Current kitchen flooring trends are natural wood and stone. Technology has made it possible to achieve these sleek floors with low-maintenance manufactured options that mimic solid hardwood. Vinyl plank waterproof tiles offer the beauty of hardwood with unparalleled durability and are available in rustic, farmhouse, industrial, and contemporary styles. Hiring the right professionals to help you navigate your kitchen remodel is a wise investment. Creative ideas, cost-cutting solutions, and help avoiding costly mistakes are a few of the benefits. A designer’s expertise with materials and construction can help you narrow down your options to the ones that best fit your lifestyle and budget. For help with decorative elements such as color, finishes, or sourcing unusual materials, consider hiring an interior designer. Designers can also create a cohesive aesthetic between your kitchen and the rest of your home. Remodeling your kitchen is a major project, but it can definitely be worth the expense. The right experts can provide the help you need to create the ultimate kitchen. Sources for this article included: consumerreports.org, nari.org, and hgtv.com. WE

CLC Landscapes Putting the “Care” Back Into “Lawn Care”
By Elizabeth French
Corporate Lawn Care was started in 2008 and successfully served primarily corporate clientele. Over the years, as owner and operator Andrew Gangestad branched out into residential clients and other services, he decided to change the name. “‘Corporate Lawn Care’ just didn’t quite broadcast who we were and what we were about,” Andrew says. “I geared it more towards the landscaping side.” CLC Landscapes was born. With a history of entrepreneurial spirit, Andrew began shaping the mold for what would eventually be CLC Landscapes when he was just a teenager. “I grew up doing this! I had a small business in high school doing residential yards,” he recalls. “I went to college in Lincoln to study horticulture, then came back and started going full-bore from there.” Andrew believes his degree in horticulture gives him an edge over his competitors and enables him to find the landscaping that is truly the best fit for his clients’ individual properties. His expertise in “plant identification, using plant material that is sustainable around the area, being able to use native plants to Nebraska and to the area—that’s all helpful.” “Our business is about half commercial and half residential now,” Andrew notes. “Much of our business is landscape design, installation, and maintenance.” They are sure to use local vendors and support Omaha’s blooming economy because of Andrew’s heartfelt belief in the importance of small businesses. To run a successful landscaping business in a fourseason climate requires creativity and flexibility. Andrew wears many different hats at CLC Landscapes, and a lot of the change depends on the season. “In Nebraska, the winter is the most unpredictable of all seasons,” he says. “We do a large amount of commercial snow removal for a lot of our landscape maintenance clients, at office buildings, business parks, apartment complexes, and medical buildings. That consumes us for about half of the winter.” You may be surprised to learn that they also do landscaping—in the winter, in Nebraska! “Yes, we also do a decent amount of landscape work, as well,” Andrew confirms. Last winter, for example, CLC Landscapes completed a large retaining wall project. If the groundwork can be accomplished in a timely manner to avoid the frost, there are certain projects that can be started or even completed during the winter months. In 2017, the company was landscaping until December 20th! Currently, CLC Landscapes is capable of handling projects of virtually any size. Recently, pools have been a popular addition to properties, as well as outdoor kitchen and fire features that allow homeowners to make better use of their outdoor space.
40
May 2018
What sets Andrew and his team apart from other firms is their ability to complete a project with no outsourcing whatsoever. “We are able to go in and do a large-scale Owner and Operator project from A to Z and be able to do everything inAndrew Gangestad house,” Andrew elaborates. “A lot of companies may want to add some outdoor living aspects to a project and will use other vendors or subcontractors. When we get hired on a project, we do everything internally through our company. For example, if we’re working with a pool company on a pool project, we handle the retaining walls, the patio spaces, the fire and water features, the landscape lighting, the irrigation repair, the sodding, the trees—we handle every aspect of the landscaping.” From the homeowner’s point of view, it’s an appealing concept to cut out the hassle of working with multiple project managers. For Andrew and his staff at CLC Landscapes, it makes designing, implementing, and completing an entire project that much more satisfying. CLC Landscapes has proven their abilities by following through and satisfying their current customers to grow their network in the community. Since their clientele is 80–90 percent referrals, they must be doing it right. “Taking a blank space and being able to transform it is rewarding,” Andrew says, “but I think the thing I enjoy the most about landscaping is working with clients. I go out and meet our clients, I’m working with them through the design process, and I’m also the person they call when they have a concern or a change to make. It’s a very one-on-one experience. I’ve been able to meet and network with a lot of great people in Omaha.” Whether you’re looking for simple lawn maintenance at your home, dependable snow removal at your business, or a complete landscaping overhaul, Andrew and the crew at CLC Landscapes are ready to meet your needs. Windows and Doors Is It Time to Repair or Replace?
By Anne Yankus
Windows and doors bring light, air, and welcomed guests into our homes. Despite how often we use them, they don’t get a lot of attention—so long as they’re working right. Take a close look at your windows and doors. Whether they’ve worn out or just gone out of style, it may be time for repair or replacement. High-quality windows can last up to 20 years or more, but they don’t last forever. There are four telling signs that can indicate it may be time to replace them: if your windows are damaged, warped, or broken; if you want to save more on your energy bill; if you feel your home needs a fresh look; or if you’ve just weathered a severe storm. One common problem is broken window seals, often indicated by a foggy film in between your double-pane or triplepane windows. You can replace windows with broken seals, but they can also usually be repaired. A qualified window repair specialist can replace just the glass within the window. If the window itself is still in good condition and providing you the level of energy efficiency you desire, repair may be a better and cheaper choice than replacement. If you’ve decided to go for window replacement, you’ll want the most energy-efficient windows you can get. Which windows are the best? Unfortunately, there’s no simple answer to that question. However, the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) provides ratings that can be used to compare products.
They rate windows in four areas: U-factor (how well the window keeps heat in), solar heat gain coefficient (how well the window resists heat from the sun), air leakage (how much air will leak in), and visible transmittance (how much light the window lets in). a cheaper, sturdy option that provides a strong barrier against intruders. However, they only last five to seven years before needing replacement. Fiberglass doors can be slightly more expensive but make up for it in their durability—they can last 15 to 20 years and require little maintenance. Wood is the most expensive option and has always been the aesthetic favorite. They require the most maintenance (wood doors should be repainted every couple of years), but small scratches are much easier to repair on wood than on steel or fiberglass. Of course, you’ll want your new door to be just as energy-efficient as your windows. As with windows, the NFRC also rates doors for solar heat gain coefficient and air leakage. As long as the door is installed properly and the seal shuts tight, you should be able to get the same kind of energy savings with your new door as with your new windows. Your front door is the gateway to your home, so you’ll want to consider style when making your selection. Natural wood and bright colors are the name of the game these days. Glass, half-glass, and oval glass are quite popular and are usually paired with browns and grays for a more natural wood look. Neutral colors can look elegant and traditional, but don’t be afraid to go with a color you love! The most popular options for doors that open to a deck or patio are sliding and French-style atrium doors. Sliding doors have the benefit of freeing up extra space inside your house—furniture can be placed directly adjacent in a way that would obstruct conventional swinging doors from opening. Sliding doors are also much more secure than they used to be. The downsides of sliding doors are, of course, the tracks, which can be a tripping hazard, and the smaller opening, which can make it difficult to move large furniture in and out. Alternatively, there are French patio doors. With both doors open, French doors provide a nice large opening and give the room a gorgeous, classic look. Double doors, of course, require more wall space and more floor space to open. Window and door upkeep are important parts of keeping your energy bill down and your home value up. This spring, take a close look at your windows and doors to see if it’s time to repair or replace. Feeling Off-Kilter? It Might Be Your Hormones
By Ashley Anderson
There are times when we just don’t feel like ourselves—everything feels a little off. This can be a response to many things, like stress, lack of sleep, poor eating habits, or even the weather. Keep in mind, however, that it could also be an indication of a hormonal imbalance. Hormones are the chemical influence in how our bodies function. They help to control many of the body’s main processes, like metabolism and reproduction. When they are out of balance, so are we. Hormone fluctuations are to be expected during certain times of a woman’s life, like menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause. Other hormonal changes, however, can occur in women of any age and also in men. Some of the most common signs of hormonal imbalance include significant changes in weight or appetite, fatigue, headaches, memory loss or difficulty concentrating, lack of sex drive, or emotional changes like nervousness, anxiety, or depression. Estrogen is the most common hormone that becomes imbalanced for women. In men, testosterone is the hormone most often imbalanced. Insufficient testosterone can lead to changes in sex drive, loss of muscle or bone mass, or breast tenderness. Other hormones that may become imbalanced include melatonin, ghrelin, leptin, thyroid, and cortisol. How do hormones get off balance? They are tied to the foods we eat, physical health, and the external influences in daily life. For
example, exposure to certain chemicals can cause hormonal imbalances. Also, as we age past the reproduction stage, our hormone production starts to decrease. Though this is a natural process, a hormone imbalance that results in significant symptoms can be very unpleasant. Long-term health risks can include poor emotional quality of life, negative impacts on body functions, and even infertility. It’s important to consult your physician if you experience the symptoms described. They will be able to make the proper diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment for any potential hormonal imbalance. Your physician will likely begin with a physical examination and have a conversation with you about your symptoms. If they determines that your symptoms could be due to a hormonal imbalance, they may perform a blood or saliva test to determine the levels of necessary hormones in your body. Blood tests are the most reliable way to determine what current hormone levels are. If the hormonal deficiencies are identified, treatment may include changes in lifestyle, medication, and, in the case of thyroid conditions, surgery.

Medication can range from internal and external prescription remedies to overthe-counter herbal treatments. Traditional medication includes pills to adjust the amount of hormone your body contains or correct its hormone productive function. Other common forms of medication include hormone patches and hormone creams. (When using topical medications, refrain from allowing others to touch the treated area, as the medication’s properties could rub off and affect those exposed.) Another form of treatment for hormonal imbalance includes pellet therapy. Small pellets are surgically placed just below the skin in an outpatient procedure. They release hormones gradually into the system. In some cases, a vaginal ring can be used to adjust female hormone levels. Like pellet therapy, the vaginal ring releases a small amount of hormone throughout the month. If medication is required, your physician may refer you to a compounding pharmacy, where they make medications on demand, customized to a patient’s needs. This can be a great advantage when commercially available medications do not meet your needs (for example, if you have an allergy to a commonly used inactive ingredient, if the dose you need is nonstandard, or if you need your medication in a less common form, like a lozenge or a cream). Compounding pharmacies often use bioidentical hormones in their therapies, which means the hormones are chemically identical to the hormones produced in the human body. Traditional hormone therapy may include bioidentical hormones or synthetic hormones. When treating a hormonal imbalance, it’s important to meet with your prescribing physician regularly so that they can monitor your progress and make adjustments as needed. Like all medication, hormone replacement therapy comes with risks and benefits that you should discuss with your doctor. Hormone replacement therapy is generally intended to be a shorter-term treatment; your doctor will help you decide how long you should be treated. Remember: Never start or stop any prescription medication without first speaking to your doctor. If you think that you are experiencing symptoms of a hormonal imbalance, contact your physician. Neglecting these signs could have serious impacts on your health. Addressing them will certainly improve your quality of life. An Inside Look
Find Your Strength and Purpose
Life Planning with Alli Van Roekel By Jackie Byers
LifePlan Guide™ Alli Van Roekel is a woman with a plan and the skills to bring her plan to fruition. Alli grew up in Omaha and Fremont, and she earned a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern College in Iowa. “After college,” she notes, “I enjoyed living in Chicago for several years. I had a wonderful husband, a Great Dane and two cats, and a good job...but the job did not feel like the right career choice for me.” She sought clarity, a better purpose for her life. “I came upon an article called, ‘Why I Do What I Do.’ It really started me thinking about how and why I had gotten the job I had.” She realized that her strengths were not a perfect fit. What needed to change for her to be fulfilled? How could she find out? “I found a program that offered to help me find clarity and make the right adjustments, so my working life would be a right path for me,” she says. “I spent quality time with a coach who led me to selfdiscovery.” Alli was so thrilled with the results of this process that she decided she wanted to become a LifePlan Guide herself. Her first certification was in the Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment. “This program helped me to discover 34 overall strengths and to further identify my top five strengths. I learned a great deal about what I do best. Some of my strengths surprised me! This comprehensive training enables me to help my clients maximize their own potential.” She journeyed to Fort Collins, Colorado, where she studied at the Paterson Center. “As I earned certification in that program,” she recalls, “I learned how my talents and experiences could best be used. I began to see a new life direction emerging.” Alli has pursued her career as a LifePlan Guide since 2013, and she knows it’s the right path for her. “What I do is so rewarding,” she declares. “I can help others find for themselves the same answers that I was looking for. I still have a coach who keeps the process going. My coach knows me and continually advocates for me.” In turn, Alli advocates for her clients. “I provide a discovery process for my clients. The process helps them answer two of life’s greatest questions: Who am I? What is my purpose?” The process of working with Alli begins with a free consultation. It is followed by something that might sound a little unusual: a comprehensive, perspective-building session that lasts a full two days. “Applying a pause button for two days allows the client to build the perspective that our fast-paced life denies us,” Alli explains. For the first day and

the morning of the second, the client focuses on her unique qualities and her life’s purpose. “The final half-day allows the client to establish specific initiatives. In this process, she gains a comprehensive understanding of five areas of her life: personal, family, vocational, spiritual, and community.” People of varying ages seek Alli’s guidance at different stages of their lives. “Often, my clients are in their late 20s and early 30s,” she says. “They are seeking a right path for life. I also work with clients in their 40s and 50s who want a career transition. I coach clients who are about to retire because they need to prepare for a different kind of living. They all want to live to the fullest.” Alli describes a client who came to her when he wanted to make a career change. “He was considering to become a pastor, which was a major career change. He feared that seminary might be too difficult. The process enabled him to pursue seminary, and he is currently earning a place as a pastor.” His wife had come along to observe the process, Alli continues, and she was so impressed with her husband’s satisfaction and success that she decided to go through the process, too. “She discovered her strengths as a leader. She is exploring becoming a school administrator.” Alli smiles. “Their success has been a rewarding experience for all three of us. Their relationship has strengthened. They now feel they are better able to support each other.” “As a coach, my purpose is to enable my clients to find success and satisfaction,” Alli concludes. “My long-term goal is to empower a generation to use their strengths and to live with purpose and intention in all they do.” If that sounds like something you’d like to do, but you aren’t sure how to start, Alli would be happy to help you find your path. Buyer Beware
Do You Know Where Your Investment Money is Going? By George Morgan
I recently spoke to a group of successful small business owners. They meet for a full day once a month to work on ways to improve the profitability and efficiency of their businesses. The morning is devoted to outside guests who speak about a variety of educational business topics. In the afternoon, they go into executive session and share issues specifically related to their businesses. I spoke to them about current developments in the local 401(k) market. At the end of my talk, I asked them how their 401(k) performed last year. Several said around 10 to 12 percent. A couple said “okay” but had no specific numbers to quote. Several had no idea. I found this shocking. These business owners devote one whole day per month to developing their companies but have no clue about the performance of their companies’ 401(k) plans. When I got back to my office, I did some homework on one of the companies. I determined that their plan did perform at about the 10 percent level. The market, with dividends, did 27 percent. This means that their employees were left with $1.2 million less than they could have had, had they only been invested in low-fee index funds. They also paid $140,000 more in administration fees than they could have if their employer had shopped around for a low-cost administrator. Employers are the gatekeepers for all our 401(k) plans. They choose and employ their plans’ service providers, and the choices they make can have a profound impact on how much money their

employees will have when they retire. Unfortunately, the scenario I describe above is the rule, not the exception. Currently, about 80 percent of Omaha’s 401(k) plans are administered by either an insurance company or a big bank, both of which are the most expensive and least productive. However, there are forces at work that have the potential to change this. Several of the largest plan providers are currently under review by the courts and federal regulators for their pricing policies. Many of the major Wall Street firms are exiting the 401(k) market and moving to more profitable endeavors. The players who are moving into the market to take their places are dramatically reducing costs and increasing investment returns. There are three fees associated with 401(k) plans: a fee for the bookkeeping, a fee for a licensed investment person (a broker) to choose the mutual funds to be offered, and a management fee paid to

the mutual fund company. The most onerous fee is the fee paid to the person choosing which mutual funds are made available to the plan participants. This fee is calculated as a percentage of the dollar value of the account. This means that, when a broker selects the funds that you can choose from, she gets a percentage of your account every year, for basically doing nothing. (I could show you examples where the list of funds hasn’t been changed in a decade.) Each time you and your employer add money to your account, a portion of that money goes to the broker. It also means that people with large accounts pay a higher fee for the same service. For example: Person A and Person B are both enrolled in the same 401(k) plan. Person A has $10,000 in his account and might pay $100 to a broker for the fund selection. Person B has $500,000 in her account; she would pay $5,000 to the broker for the same service. By the way, the person with the largest account is usually the business owner, who picked the broker in the first place. There are service providers appearing in the marketplace who will choose the mutual funds for an investment menu on a fixed fee basis. This fee is not based on the size of the account and is, in the current marketplace, about one tenth of what is generally being charged. What’s the solution? Plan participants must take responsibility for their own money. Nobody cares as much about your money as you do. It begins with you finding out about the details of your plan. How much are you being charged in fees? Who gets paid, and how much do they get? How are the fees calculated? There is strength in numbers. The more people who are involved in this process, the stronger will be their case. After you have determined what your plan looks like, you need to determine what the alternatives are. There are many online resources to help you. You can also call one of the major discount brokers, and they will provide you with additional resources. Remember: Less money for Wall Street means more money for you. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. To determine which investments may be appropriate for you, consult your financial advisor prior to investing. WE

Palliative and Hospice Care
Changing Times Demand New Care Strategies By Linda Barnes
Demographics, cultural shifts, and technological advances have brought about enormous changes to health care delivery in recent years. An aging population and the fast pace of medical discoveries are just some of the factors creating a need for innovative care plans. Palliative care and hospice care are meeting those needs. Hospice care has become quite familiar now and is a boon to the patient and to family caregivers. It is reserved for patients of all ages who are terminally ill, where a curative treatment is no longer desired or no longer possible. This specialized care may be given in one’s home or at a long-term care or inpatient hospice facility. With home care, a special bed, medications, and needed medical equipment can be brought in. The basic team consists of a hospice nurse and a physician (your family physician or a hospice doctor). Other professionals may be involved as needed, such as psychologist, nutritionist, physical or occupational therapist, social worker, or chaplain. Medicare or Medicaid generally covers hospice costs. Others may be covered by private insurance. The hospice team will be able to help patients and families navigate the financial issues involved. Hospice aims for the highest quality of life in the time that remains. Comfort is a high priority, with every effort to manage the physical pain that can result in fatigue and irritability. Emotional comfort is equally important, and medications can help relieve
anxiety. Art, massage, or pet therapy may enhance the patient’s physical and mental well-being. Hospice care provides compassionate support for the terminally ill patient as she works through preparations for the end of her life. Some patients have goals like attending a family wedding or getting finances in order. Family members benefit from hospice, as well, from assistance with caregiving and with helping their loved one reach these goals. Palliative care is similar to hospice care, but with some significant differences. While hospice care is for those no longer seeking a cure, those in palliative care are typically still receiving medical treatment to cure an illness or to extend life. Both hospice and palliative care focus on pain management and symptom relief. Both address emotional, social, practical, and spiritual challenges. People with serious or chronic illnesses such as cancer, heart

disease, lung disease, kidney failure, or dementia can benefit from palliative care. A variety of health care professionals may provide palliative care; however, there are also specialists in the field. As with hospice care, palliative care may involve doctors, nurses, dietitians, social workers, psychologists, massage therapists, and chaplains. The palliative care team will coordinate care with the patient’s other doctors, but the palliative team is specially trained to help patients and their families meet the unique challenges of dealing with serious illness. Hospitals, cancer centers, home care agencies, or long-term care facilities in your area may offer palliative care. Pain, nausea, sleep disturbances, or shortness of breath are some of the issues that palliative care addresses. The stress that accompanies a serious or chronic illness can add to the difficulties. Mental health providers may lend their expertise with counseling, family meetings, or support groups. A palliative care team member may help with medical forms and navigating insurance or financial issues. While hospice care is generally given during the last six months of life, palliative care can begin with the diagnosis of a serious illness, a chronic condition, or a severe injury. A doctor, case manager, nurse, or social worker may help in finding palliative care or hospice care. Ask questions when considering a hospice program or palliative care. Certification, staff training, services offered, and caregiver support are just some of the things you’ll want to know. A family member who is the patient’s caregiver may benefit from respite care services, given the high risk of burnout. Early enrollment in hospice can be beneficial; statistics show that these patients live better and longer. Families do better when sharing the load and often experience an easier bereavement after their loved one passes. I recall that my father’s physician suggested we meet with a hospice provider when Dad was still feeling relatively well, in spite of having incurable cancer. We did, and when we decided he needed hospice care a few weeks later, we were able to start care with just a phone call. There’s no way to avoid all discomfort during a serious illness or at the end of life. However, palliative care and hospice care can bring us the hope and resources we need to improve quality of life. Family Law The Law of Domestic Relations
By Connie Keck
Families are the foundation of our society, and family dynamics are the most crucial elements of all of our lives. When families face legal changes, they often need professional advice. At these times, families can greatly benefit from a specialist in family law. Most family law practices focus on clients who are going through a divorce and navigating the related issues of property division, alimony, and the custody and support of children. Other matters that family law addresses include domestic violence, legal protection, and adoption. Not all lawyers practice family law. However, many attorneys have begun to specialize in this specific area. An attorney who practices only divorce and family law will have the kind of expertise needed to handle your legal issues.Your lawyer should have experience in your jurisdiction (county), in your courthouse, and in front of your judge. Having that local experience ensures that your attorney knows the decisionmakers and how they make rulings on a daily basis. You want an attorney who has built credibility and trust in your area. If you are thinking about filing for divorce, you need to make sure your financial house is in order. Keep important documents with a trusted friend or in a safe deposit box. Check your credit, as this will be one of the most critical aspects of your financial wellbeing. Keep a close eye on joint credit card statements so you can get
a jump on any unusual activity. Be aware of your tax situation; this time next year, you may be receiving support payments or reporting capital gains after the sale of joint investments. Obtain a legal separation agreement, which is a legally binding agreement between you and your spouse to resolve issues such as division of assets and debt, alimony/spousal support, child support, and visitation. If you don’t obtain a legal separation agreement, you may be liable for your spouse’s debts and other joint ventures. In some divorces, the parties are too much at odds to avoid court proceedings. If the situation is amicable, court may be avoided. Divorce mediation is a process in which the parties hire a single lawyer who represents neither party. Instead, she guides both parties through a process of resolving all issues in their divorce without going to court. Typically, this includes having the lawyer prepare the documents required to finalize the divorce once an agreement has been reached. Collaborative divorce, sometimes called uncontested divorce, is an even more amicable process. In this case, both parties agree

that it is in everyone’s best interest to end the marriage without fighting over things such as custody, visitation, child support, alimony, or property taxes. This requires a sound commitment from both parties. The final decree represents the official outcome of a divorce action. The court should provide you with a certified copy of the decree, but you can obtain another copy from the Court Clerk’s office. Domestic violence is abuse by one person against another in a domestic setting. Domestic violence can include violence against spouses, children, or parents. It takes a number of forms, including physical, verbal, emotional, economic, religious, reproductive, and sexual abuse. Legal protection for domestic violence varies by state. In many states, police officers can help you obtain a temporary protective order (or restraining order) at the scene of the crime. These orders usually last until a permanent protective order can be issued. Protective orders are available in all states, but each state has its own laws governing them. Your state may or may not require an attorney for you to be able to obtain a protective order. If you’re building your family through adoption, a family lawyer can help you navigate the process. Domestically, you can adopt a child who is living in foster care (under your care or someone else’s) or opt for an independent adoption, according to the National Adoption Center. Independent and infant adoptions may be closed or open. In a closed adoption, you don’t receive any identifying information about, or have contact with, the birth parents. In an open adoption, you may meet the birth parents in person, talk to them on the phone, or communicate through letters and pictures. Each state has its own guidelines governing domestic adoptions. These include who can adopt, what is needed to adopt, and how the process works. International adoptions require all the steps of domestic adoptions with the added steps required by the child’s birth country. Some adoption lawyers specialize in international adoption; this is probably the best way to complete the process. If you need help with a domestic relations matter, be sure you’ve got the right lawyer. Specialists in family law can guide you and your family through the rough waters of the legal system to the calm of the opposite shore. Gadgets and Options for Any Vehicle Accessorize Your Ride This Summer By Brennan Hallock
Remember when power windows and cruise control were luxuries? Our insatiable need for gadgets and features in our vehicles has led to some truly amazing additions since then. From high-resolution touch screens to keyless entry, from parking assist to smartphone connectivity, the features available for vehicles today would be unrecognizable to the car makers of just a few decades ago. Some of these accessories may sound out of reach unless you’re buying a new vehicle. In reality, many features can be added to the vehicle you already own. Most new vehicles come with high-quality sound systems, but if you want an upgrade, be sure to check out Pioneer’s wide range of stereos. The Pioneer AVHX5800BHS is a powerful speaker. It has a touch screen display, allows you to play music or take calls from your phone via USB or Bluetooth, and is compatible with Spotify, Pandora, SiriusXM, and HD Radio. Pioneer’s DEH-X6900BT is a simpler version that still has excellent features. If you want to stream music or have hands-free calling, you need to have Bluetooth in your vehicle. Newer cars often have this feature built in, but it can be installed in any vehicle. The Jabra Freeway is a top-ofthe-line wireless Bluetooth system that clips to your visor, which cuts down on feedback during phone calls. Better suited for music streaming is the SoundBot SB360. This device plugs into your AUX input and provides superior sound quality for playing music. Installing a DVD player can be an attractive option for families—those of us who have driven long distances with kids know how much a DVD player in the vehicle can cut down on backseat fighting and excessive bathroom stops. The Pioneer AVH-X4800BS integrates with Bluetooth to allow you to connect to phones or tablets. It also includes popular apps like Spotify and Pandora, allows voice control, and comes with an equalizer, giving you more control over your sound quality. If you’ve got devices with you in the car (who doesn’t?), you’ll need to charge them sooner or later. The Anker Quick Charge 4-Port USB Car Charger is an affordable, versatile addition to any car. This device plugs into the cigarette lighter and allows four USBcompatible devices to charge at once. It even includes the USB type-C port. New vehicles often have rearview cameras to assist with parking, but a dash cam may also be a smart addition to your vehicle. Not only do these record events that you choose, they also automatically begin recording on impact. This can be of great use in determining fault in an accident or finding the perpetrator of a hit and run. The small, unobtrusive Garmin Dash Cam 45 and Dash Cam 55 are two of the best choices. Driver alerts such as forward collision and lane departure are built in. In addition to saving footage, they also save location data through GPS.

If you missed the boat on keyless entry and remote starting, your car can probably be retrofitted with these features. In many cases, remote start can be added to your existing factory key fob. Viper and Clifford both make top-of-the-line keyless entry systems. The Clifford 5906X and Viper 4706v are two of the best systems available. Both offer LCD remote control, a one-mile radius for notifications if the car has been disturbed, and use with a smartphone app. The Viper 4706v also includes a temperature gauge inside the car. Upgrading your car lighting is attractive and practical. Brighter, clearer aftermarket lights will improve your vision at night and during inclement weather. There are many different options for upgrading your car lights, including HID lights, LED lights, or new headlight lenses. The HIKARI LED (9600 lumens) and the simdevanma Allin-One (8000 lumens) are two excellent options for upgrading your headlights. Both are 6000K color, which is pure white. If you are like most of us, you don’t notice the mess building up inside your vehicle until you let a friend ride with you. If you’ve got extra toys, electronics, and coffee mugs cluttering up the car, consider a High Road Car Seat Organizer. This pocket-filled soft organizer hangs from the back of your seat and keeps all your stuff organized. If your office is always with you, you may find a laptop holder to be a useful item. The RAM Reverse Configuration Universal No-Drill Laptop Mount is one of the best ways to use your laptop while in the car (not while you’re driving, of course). Its heavy-duty steel mounting base is compatible with many vehicles, and its spring-loaded arms securely hold laptops of many sizes. Don’t fret if your vehicle doesn’t have the luxury gadgets you desire. Aftermarket add-ons and professional installation can bring your car up to speed. The Good Life
Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics Your Child’s Path to Good Dental Health
By Leslie Byrne
Parents understand that children’s medical needs aren’t the same as adults’ medical needs, so they take their children to a pediatrician—a medical doctor who is trained in caring for children. Did you know that there’s also a specialty in dentistry that focuses exclusively on children’s dental needs? It’s called pedodontics, and it’s something that all parents should consider. All dentists are trained to care for both children and adults, but pedodontists (also known as pediatric dentists) complete two or three additional years of training after graduating from dental school. During this training, they learn how to handle childhood dental concerns, become experts on how teeth develop, and learn how to handle dental problems caused by long-term thumb-sucking or pacifier use. Their training includes how to talk to children, how to make them feel more comfortable at the office, and how to decrease fears a child may have about seeing the dentist. They study child behavior, psychology, and physical growth, as well as how to provide dental care for children with special needs. One of the first differences a parent may notice when visiting a pedodontist is how brightly and cheerfully the office is decorated. This is no coincidence—the entire office is designed with kids in mind. Child-sized dental tools are more comfortable in a child’s mouth. The exam chairs are often smaller and may be decorated to interest a child. Many offices have television screens showing cartoons or movies that the child can watch while the dentist works. Don’t let the inviting decoration and entertaining distractions fool you into thinking this isn’t a serious visit. Pedodontists focus on preventative care and can identify problems early so treatment is easier and can get started promptly. It’s recommended that children as young as six months visit a pedodontist. Early on, young patients (and their parents) are introduced to healthy habits, like brushing twice a day and flossing. Pedodontists perform regular dental cleanings, repair cavities, and treat children who have had a dental injury from sports or playing. They use the latest preventative treatments and often alert parents when a visit to the orthodontist is likely to be recommended in the future. Orthodontists specialize in straightening teeth and correcting jaw alignment. Like a pedodontist, an orthodontist completes two or three years of additional training after dental school. Orthodontists treat adults as well as children, but most of their patients are children and teens. Teeth that are crowded together or spaced too far apart can often be addressed with orthodontic treatment. Orthodontics can also treat over bites, under bites, or cross bites. Heredity often is the reason that someone’s teeth are crooked or misaligned, but thumb-
60

sucking or lengthy pacifier use can also cause a child to need braces. There is no set age at which someone should see an orthodontist. Depending on the issue, some children as young as six should visit an orthodontist. This doesn’t mean they will need braces at that time. It is not uncommon for a child to wear braces when she is as young as ten years old, have them removed, and then wear braces again as a teenager to correct a different issue. Braces can be worn for different lengths of time, but most children wear them for one to three years. After the braces are removed, children wear a retainer. A retainer is a removable appliance that helps keep teeth in their new position after braces have been removed. (In some cases, a child’s bite can be corrected with a retainer instead of braces.) It is vital to wear the retainer properly after braces are removed to maintain the new bite. If a child stops wearing her retainer, her teeth can move back—sometimes, far enough that she’ll want braces to correct her teeth again as an adult. Invisalign is a newer orthodontic device that is a transparent, plastic form placed over the teeth to gently move them. Though Invisalign is more commonly used for adults, an orthodontist may recommend Invisalign instead of full braces for a child, depending on the child’s treatment plan. Since pedodontists are trained in detecting dental concerns that may require orthodontic care, a pedodontist and an orthodontist can work together to ensure your child’s dental care is the best it can be. In some cases, a pedodontist and an orthodontist may even work together in the same practice to provide stellar continuity of care. When your child is ready to see a dentist, consider taking her to a pedodontist. She’ll get the dental care she needs in an environment that is welcoming and designed just for kids. It’s a great way to start your child on a path to lifelong dental health. Great Escapes
Kansas City
Here We Come! By Jackie Williams
What do Count Basie, world-famous barbecue, and the Oregon Trail all have in common? They all got their start in (or near) Kansas City! This humble city has a lot to offer. If you love food, family travel, history and museums, or art and architecture, you would love a trip here. Did you know that Kansas City is home to over 200 fountains—second only to Rome? Or that the city hosts the world’s largest barbecue competition each fall? It’s also a great stop on a road trip traveling the Oregon Trail, which began only about 20 minutes away, in Independence, Missouri. Do you need more to entice you to go on a trip? Well, here’s more: The Kansas City airport (MCI) is only about a three-hour flight from the east or west coast (and only 90 minutes from Denver). The metro area spans the state line, so there’s a Kansas City, Kansas, and a Kansas City, Missouri. Downtown Kansas City is on the Missouri side. Walt Disney opened his first animation studio here, and it is where he got the inspiration for Mickey Mouse. Hallmark got started in this city, as well. If you have creative kids, make sure to stop by Kaleidoscope, an arts and crafts center that offers creative art sessions for children using leftover materials from producing Hallmark cards. It’s fun, it’s recycling, it’s free!
If you are looking for activities for adults, wander over to The Plaza. Designed in 1922 as the first suburban shopping district, it is now an open-air public museum and art gallery, right in the heart of the city. The Spanish-themed sculptures and murals will make you think you are in another country. Download a copy of a walking tour and see it all during your visit. You can’t come to Kansas City and not see the Country Club Plaza! There are so many locally made crafts and products, you will have no trouble bringing home fantastic souvenirs and gifts. Prefer to sharpen your mind a bit while you’re on vacation? The National Frontier Trails Museum shares the history and experiences of migrators crossing the American wilderness during the mid-19th century. The National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City is the only museum in the United States dedicated to World War I. Both of these museums have special anniversaries in 2018. ›››

Next, let’s talk about food. Are more than 100 barbecue restaurants enough for ya? The barbecue craze started in Kansas City back in the 1920s and continues today. Sounds like the perfect foodie tour, don’t you think? I’ll throw you a bone and give you a few suggestions: Joe’s Kansas City BBQ (multiple championship winner), Arthur Bryant’s Barbeque (created by the King of Ribs and frequented by former presidents), and Gates BBQ (the oldest joint in the city, still family-owned). Although the barbecue is world-class, Kansas City also offers any type of food you have a taste for. Have your travel agent book you a table at a James Beard chef’s restaurant, like Farina or Rye. Try the farmto-table deliciousness at The Westside Local. If you like the craft beer and distillery scene, Kansas City won’t disappoint. Purchase a Tap Tour guidebook for $7, visit the breweries, get discounts, and collect prizes. Check out S.D. Strong Distilling—it’s the only distillery in the world that is located in a cave! The Boulevardia, an annual street fair with beer, food, bands, biking, and plenty of fun, will be June 15–16 this year. Advance tickets are recommended, as single-day tickets sometimes sell out. (Check out boulevardia.com for more information.) Music is just as important as food in Kansas City. The VisitKC website brags that “while New Orleans was the birthplace of jazz, America’s music grew up in Kansas City.” From the roaring ’20s to the early 1940s, jazz reigned in Kansas City. Today, live jazz can still be heard regularly at dozens of clubs throughout the metro area. Of course, when you travel to Kansas City, you can’t forget the Royals and the Chiefs! Check with your travel agent about combination packages that include accommodations and tickets to a game. Add tickets to Worlds of Fun or Oceans of Fun and get all the theme park fun, too! Kansas City is easy to get to and fascinating to explore. It is a great year-round destination for couples or for the whole family. See for yourself what this great city has to offer you. Enterprising Ideas
Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Cemetery, and Crematory History and Natural Beauty in the City By Marge Shoemaker
Forest Lawn Cemetery, a beautiful 349-acre park located in the rolling hills of North Omaha, was established in 1885. Over the years, it has become more than a cemetery—it’s also a national wildlife sanctuary and an arboretum, with several champion state trees. A drive through the upper hills takes you past a number of mausoleums bearing names that you’ll recognize from local streets, buildings, and figures from Omaha history. On the eastern edge of the cemetery is a historic chapel, designed by local architect John McDonald. In 1911, the Masonic Grand Lodge of Nebraska laid the cornerstone for the structure, enabling Forest Lawn to offer full burial services. Though its history is fascinating, Forest Lawn is solidly in the present. Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Cemetery, and Crematory is a remarkable fullservice facility that can provide everything you need to honor and inter a loved one who has passed away. Forest Lawn is one of only four combination facilities in the entire state of Nebraska, and the cemetery itself is one of the few not-for-profit cemeteries in the country. Prominent just inside the west entry is the Forest Lawn funeral home, which opened in August 2015. Fronted by a circular drive and a covered entryway, the building is home to the cemetery offices, viewing and funeral chapel, a welcoming seating area complete with a large fireplace, and a reception hall that can hold up to 300 people at a luncheon or informal gathering after a service. Tim Ash has been the general manager at Forest Lawn since March of 2016. He oversees all operational and business issues for the property and funeral home, including the work of 27 employees. Angela Erickson, the family service manager, oversees their family service counselors and recruits, hires, and trains staff for the facility. They both assist families with navigating the process of funeral and cemetery arrangements. “Having a funeral home and cemetery on the same site means we are able to offer families the convenience of making all their arrangements at one location,” they explain. Rather than having to coordinate with several different facilities—everything from burial plots to headstones to a reception hall— grieving families can arrange for all these things in the same place. Tim and Angela believe that those of us still living can gain a sense of closure when we memorialize our deceased loved ones and place their remains in a permanent way. Tim notes that, like many cultural
66
May 2018
customs, the way that people view burial arrangements changes over time. In order to give closure, Tim General Manager and Angela encourage families to have a service and Tim Ash and funeral, and select a permanent place to memorialize Family Service Manager their loved one’s cremated remains. As Angela Angela Erickson reminds us, professional grief counselors advise that “it is better to choose a permanent place to set aside the cremation urn or cremated remains as a memorial honoring a loved one. This is a special place where everyone can visit, pay their respects, and grieve.” Forest Lawn also offers an online new memorial tribute called “Remember My Journey,” which Tim describes as “an ideal permanent, visual memorial. Through our website, we offer a link to a personal page where messages, photos, or videos can be posted—a resource of memories and information about your loved one.” It’s a great way to remember a veteran’s valor and let future generations get to know his or her name and face. The website includes an app providing a “turn-by-turn and step-by-step” guide to find the deceased’s burial location in the cemetery. Tim also emphasizes the gift you can give your loved ones by preplanning—that is, by making funeral arrangements now instead of leaving all the decisions to be made by your grieving family after your death. If you have particular desires about how you want to be buried, make them known now. Purchase the plot. Select the headstone and casket. Let your family know if you want to be cremated and what you want to have done with your cremains. “There’s no need for a grieving family to have to handle those details if the hard work is done now,” Tim says. “If you want your family to be a part of these decisions, include them now.” After your death, they can pay tribute to you and gain a sense of closure from the knowledge that they have honored your wishes. Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Cemetery, and Crematory is located at 7909 Mormon Bridge Road, in Omaha. To reach them by phone, call 402-451-1000. The Big Buzz about Bees You, Too, Can Be a Beekeeper
By Sharon Knierim
Did you know that to make just one pound of honey, bees may travel 55,000 miles and visit over 2,000,000 separate flowers? A single active hive may provide between 45 and 60 pounds of honey in one year. The second valued crop of bees is beeswax, which has several good uses for consumers. Much has changed in the world of bees and beekeeping over the years. Toxic pesticides and herbicides have resulted in lower populations of pollinators (in other words, bees). Without these pollinators, our own food supply is at risk. You may have noticed the absence of large numbers of bees in your own personal environment and wondered what has made this change. In some areas, the change is devastating, and there are more than a few beekeepers who have gone to great lengths to increase bee numbers. Beekeeping may sound like something complicated and dangerous, not to be attempted by backyard gardeners. In reality, keeping bees is no more work than most other garden chores. Backyard beekeepers note that caring for bees takes just a small amount of time every two weeks. Raising and caring for chickens and goats, for example, requires much more time and much more frequent attention. Many beekeeping associations and beekeepers themselves spend approximately 30 hours annually taking care of their bees. Just 30 hours in a year!
R E T R A C T A B L E
S H A D I N G
Afraid of bees, you say? Well, like most of us, bees are naturally defensive. However, with a little preparation, education, and the proper tools, nearly anyone can safely keep bees. As with any garden endeavor, start small. DO NOT jump in with both feet and attempt to have more bees than you can comfortably and cheerfully handle. Being prepared and knowledgeable about the ins and outs of bees and their requirements before making a final decision about beekeeping will keep both you and your bees happier. Of course, you will need equipment for the bees and for yourself. As you begin to learn about beekeeping, you’ll discover that there are basically two box designs from which to choose. The most popular consists of rectangular stacked boxes containing wooden, removable frames. They fit into an already-built foundation, and

this is where the bees will build their wax combs. The hive frames are easy to make, and parts are easy to find. There is another styling design known as “top bar.” Wooden bars are placed in ridges along the top of the box, which is then covered with a lid. With this design, the pollinators can suspend their cupshaped combs from the bars. This setup will produce approximately one fifth less than the other design, but the wax is much simpler to retrieve. Some beekeepers believe that this model seems to allow for calmer bees, which makes life easier for both bees and humans. Additionally, plants seem to be better pollinated with these bees. What are all the best beekeepers wearing this season? Start out with a hooded beekeeping suit, including gloves. This is not a good time to be thrifty by buying used. Disease and pests such as mites can cause bees to sicken and die, so it is best to begin with new equipment to help keep bees healthy. As with caring for any animal, keeping your equipment and their environment as clean as possible is paramount. Once you’ve built or purchased a hive and the required equipment, you’ll need to populate your hive. Starting with the correct bees is important! You’ll want to work with the calmest bees possible. This is where current beekeepers or beekeeping societies can be of great assistance. Rely on the experiences and expertise of keepers who are already well established. Advice from current keepers will guide you to the correct purchase of male drones, female worker bees, and a good queen. Is there drama in the hive? Well, of course there is. The male drone’s only purpose is to mate with the queen. For the drones, this is fatal, so you may have to harden your heart for a bit. The majority of the hive is composed of female working bees. Of course, there is only one queen at a time in the hive. There are so many resources available today to help you make bees a part of your garden experience. It’s not just about the honey and the beeswax. With more bees, garden harvests increase—your own, and everyone else’s. What a wonderful, worthwhile activity! Cuddly Critters
Fleas, Ticks, and Other Maladies How to Protect Your Furry Friends By Elizabeth French
Spring is in full swing, and it’s time for pet owners to arm their pets against common dangers like fleas, ticks, rabies, and heartworm. As the sun comes out, so do other animals, and they may bring risks that can endanger the health of your pet as well as the cleanliness of your home. Fleas love warmth and humidity, so a furry friend is their ideal environment. Females can produce up to 50 eggs in a single day, and these tiny pests can quickly become an issue on a large scale, infesting beds, carpeting, couches, and any other furniture your pet rests on. Females begin laying eggs within 24 hours, so it is essential to stay sharp and act fast. The cardinal sign of fleas is excessive scratching, which, if left untreated, can lead to sores and skin infections. Adult fleas are typically no larger than a sesame seed, and they can be difficult to detect. One tell-tale sign is the accumulation of flea dirt—that is, the small black droppings left behind in your pet’s coat. Even if the bugs themselves are not obviously present, it is essential to take this as a sign of infestation. Once you’ve identified the issue, your vet will suggest a treatment and extermination plan based on your pet’s needs and the severity of the infestation. In addition to treating your pet, you’ll need to treat your home by vacuuming carpets and upholstered furniture and frequently washing bedding, clothing, and other surfaces to lift and dispose of any leftover fleas and their eggs (some of which may hatch even after falling off their host). Ticks are another common issue for dogs and cats. Found in tall grass and undergrowth, ticks can latch onto any animal that enters their vicinity. Dogs will most likely have ticks around their neck and ears or in the folds of their legs. Be sure to check between their toes, too. On cats, ticks typically attach to the neck and face area. Ticks can cause skin irritation, spread infectious disease, and even lead to anemia. This is because an adult tick can absorb up to 100 times its weight in blood! Heartworm is a disease caused by foot-long worms that occupy the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels of their host. As a result, infected pets can develop severe lung disease, heart failure, and other ailments. Affecting dogs and cats, wolves, coyotes, foxes, and even people, heartworms are insidious parasites that breed inside the host. Dogs are the ideal carrier for heartworms, and your vet can provide medication to treat your dog. In cats, however, heartworms usually don’t survive long enough to breed. This sounds like good news, but it means that heartworm disease often goes unnoticed in cats, since they only host a couple of worms. Unfortunately, the medication used to treat heartworm in dogs cannot be used to treat cats, so prevention is the only way to keep your cat healthy. Talk to your vet about heartworm prevention. If your pet shows symptoms

like persistent cough, reluctance to exercise, decreased appetite, weight loss, a swollen abdomen, or vomiting, seek help from a veterinarian immediately. Rabies is one of the most severe viruses a pet can contract, as it affects an animal’s brain and central nervous system. This disease can occur in any mammal, including humans. It is spread through saliva (usually, from a bite from an infected animal) and penetrates through the closest nerve fibers to invade the CNS. Symptoms develop over a few weeks and include fever, seizures, hydrophobia, inability to swallow, irritability, and the classic frothing mouth. Once symptoms appear, however, rabies is nearly always fatal. If you see symptoms like these in your dog, be sure to bring your proof of vaccination to your veterinarian along with the infected animal. Post-exposure treatment is available for humans who are bitten by an animal whose rabies vaccination status is unknown. For pets, the best approach is vaccination. In most municipalities, it is required for pet licensure; check with your veterinarian. Dental care is a great way to improve your pet’s quality of life. Weekly brushings that remove excess plaque and tartar can mean the difference between a healthy mouth and developing oral issues. Your pet’s teeth should be checked annually by your veterinarian. If your pet has bad breath, has broken or loose teeth, or refuses to eat, call your vet right away. Talk with your veterinarian about treats and foods that are designed to help maintain dental health. With the right prevention, your pet may be able to avoid health hazards like fleas, ticks, heartworm, rabies, and dental problems. If a problem crops up, your vet can recommend the treatment tactics that are best for your pet’s needs. Positive Perspective
A Time for Rebirth Getting Back to Happy Spring is a time of growth, change, and rebirth in nature. This spring, I have made it my intention to have my own sort of rebirth. “Remember that your natural state is joy.” —Wayne Dyer I know that how we feel every day is simply a choice. I understand that terrible things can and do happen, but how we respond and what we do is completely up to us. I’ve made a commitment to myself that I am going to start demanding things from my life and myself. I feel, I know, that if I focus my attention on accomplishing these things, I will undoubtedly become a happier person, and in turn, I hope to bring some extra joy and happiness to those around me. So what am I going to demand? First, I am going to demand that I stop every day to find things in my life to be appreciative of. Last weekend, I told my granddaughters that I am going to call and ask them to tell me three positive things that happened to them at school. I told them I would share my three things from my day, as well. I want them (and myself) to start appreciating the little things in life more and recognizing them. Often times, we skim past the little wins or thoughtful gestures that happen to us every day. I think if every one of us took just a few minutes a day to reflect and pull out those positive moments, we would all start to get more of them.

“Being happy doesn’t mean everything is perfect, it means you have decided to look beyond imperfections.”—Unknown The other major commitment I’m making to myself is to listen to my heart. I’ve noticed over the last six months or so I have really stopped listening to myself. I used to be someone who was decisive and knew what I wanted. Lately, I have felt that I listen to what everyone else wants me to do. This has really taken its toll on me. I literally feel like a different person, someone I neither recognize nor like. I admit it can sometimes be easier to let others tell you what to do, but if you are constantly listening to others you are being disrespectful to your heart. Remember, you are the one who is living your life. You are the one facing the consequences of your choices. I know there is more I can and will do. For now, my primary intention is to be happy. I challenge each of you to make that your primary intention, as well. Keep a notebook and write a few things down each day that you are appreciative of. Take note of the times you are truly listening to your heart and how those situations turned out. “Life is short. If there was ever a moment to follow your passion and do something that matters to you, that moment is now.”—Unknown
