Publisher’s Notes

Tirade of Appreciation Happy Thanksgiving to all! I have decided to go on a “tirade of appreciation” this entire month. I have made a conscious decision to recognize, on a moment-bymoment basis, everything that I appreciate in my life. Sometimes, I will say it out loud; other times, I will simply make a mental note of it. Appreciation and gratitude are two very powerful emotions and energies. Think about it: It is impossible to be negative when these two energies are coming forth from us. We cannot hold two opposing feeling tones at the same time. By focusing on what I am appreciative of, what I am grateful for, I will be a more pleasant person to be around. I will be joyful. I will be calmer. I will attract more people and situations into my life that bring me joy. Have you ever found yourself waking up on the “wrong side” of the bed? As the morning begins, you spill your coffee, you match up to all the worst drivers in the city, your coworkers come in with a chip on their shoulder…by the end of the day, all you want to do is crawl back into bed. I admit I’ve been doing this more often than not over the past couple of months. Are there “legitimate” excuses for my mood? Absolutely! Is this “vibe” doing me any good? We all know the answer to that. I decided I would head back to basics. What a great month to change: Thanksgiving month! It will be my Touchstone Month, the month I decided to turn things around. So I am putting out a “challenge” to our readers: Let’s all take a deep breath and begin to notice the things that we appreciate in our lives. Some are easy—our kids, grandkids, spouses. Others can be more challenging—our bosses, coworkers, customers. It all begins with a single decision: Today, I’m going to look for things that make me feel good when I see them. Turn on some music that feels good when you listen to it. Take it moment by moment. What I am talking about is creating a new habit and pattern. It takes 21 days to develop a new habit. Let’s make November the month we decide to be appreciative and grateful. I know that this decision has the power to change all of our lives for the better. By the time Thanksgiving rolls around, life will have evolved into a whole lot more joy. We will be surrounded by a multitude of people and situations that make us smile. Life is good. Have a GREAT MONTH!

To express your appreciation, sincerely and without the expectation of anything in return. Truly appreciate those around you, and you’ll soon find many others around you. Beautiful Fall Options Nature and Fashion Embrace Our Wardrobe! By Holly Bell

Fall is my favorite time of the year. It’s as if everything leading up to it is an appetizer and fall is the dessert! Even though we may groan a bit when the cold rushes in, we love the Midwest and its gorgeous seasons. Perfect cool temperatures, the beautiful autumn colors, and the bountiful harvest make it the best time to embrace everything, including your wardrobe! The hottest color of this season is powerful red. One of the great things about red is that there is a hue that is perfect for everyone. From brilliant orange-reds to deep wines and everything in between, everyone can wear some tone of red. Match your lip color to the tone that you are wearing to look ultra-chic. For a little drama, go for an all-over monochromatic look, or choose an unexpected accessory such as statement red boots! You will be the center of admiration wearing a red dress in a sea of black (which is always the safe choice). If you’re not comfortable in head-to-toe red, opt for an eye-popping red handbag or scarf to reveal your inner fashionista. Faux fur and leather, along with the genuine articles, continue to be popular this year. Faux leather is so hard to distinguish from the real thing, but the price difference is substantial. Leather pants, skirts, the ever-popular moto jacket, and even dresses will be fun and warm to wear this fall and winter. Fur vests will keep us warm, along with fur-trimmed everything, from gloves to jackets to hats to the especially cozy lining of coats. Designers are also having fun with details for fall 2017. Buttons are being used for decorative purposes rather than utilitarian. Buttons will embellish the sides of skirts and pants, along with other creative uses like extra buttons on your double-breasted coat. As you may have noticed in the stores, embroidery is everywhere. It embellishes the shoulders of dresses with a big red rose or is sprinkled down the front of shirts and tops. It adds an opulent detail and can be fun to wear, but I wouldn’t buy too much of this trend, as it may just be a short-lived one. Designers are crushing on velvet this season. I think everyone will embrace this trend, as it has been a while since we have enjoyed the feel of this super-soft, stretchy fabric. Feel like a star in glitter this year! As seen on television award shows, all-over glitter is glorious. If that’s too much for you, try a fabric accented with metallic thread for a slightly tamer look. Shoulder pads are coming back strong this year in coats and tailored jackets. Don’t worry—we’re not talking about “Dynasty” shoulder pads, we are talking about gentle shaping of the shoulders. Personally, I think they make a flattering silhouette on most everyone. Belts are going back to wider widths again, with a little 1980s retro feel. Belts are worn around the waist or

a little higher to accentuate the narrowest part of the body. When you think of fall, you think of plaid. That ’70s plaid is back again (we never stopped loving it!). Black and white checks in every size, done in menswear cuts, will satisfy tailored fashionistas. For the girly girl, winter florals will abound, along with lace and billowing sleeves. For the sporty woman, denim is forever, but there are new options this season for wearing this versatile fabric. Denim jumpsuits, coats, and dresses, along with the beloved denim skirt, will be among your fall choices. Who says we can’t be a tailored girl one day, a girly girl the next, and a sporty girl the day after that? Variety is the spice of life! Hemlines are longer for fall. That is not to say that you can’t still wear your short skirts with leggings and boots, but longer lengths are elegant for fall. Longer hemlines are most flattering when they fall around the calf, showing the slimmest part of the leg. Before it gets too cold, these longer skirts are perfect with bare legs and platform sandals. And you can’t beat the coziness of a long skirt worn with leggings and tall boots in the cold. You look and feel best when you are essentially YOU, whether your style is sophisticated, elegant, refined, powerful, classic, womanly, funky, glamorous, tailored, casual, or a mix of all of the above. The most important fashion secret is to feel good in what you are wearing. Your look reflects your personal style and individuality. As we welcome cooler temperatures, let’s look forward to a fresh, vibrant, and colorful fall season. Editor’s Note: Holly has been in the fashion industry for over 30 years as a buyer, boutique store owner, visual merchandiser, and fashion show producer. She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE For more information, visit www.charliebcollection.com

Bliss Boutique Because Every Woman Deserves Bliss By Cynthia Jeffrey

Bliss…the word itself conjures up a feeling of satisfaction and luxury. What a great name for a boutique! Bliss Boutique is a gem of a store located in Bel Air Plaza, near 120th and West Center Road, in Omaha. You really feel a sense of peace as soon as you enter the store. It could be the Tyler Candles (sold exclusively at Bliss Boutique!) or the open lighting throughout the large space. It’s warm and airy, with plenty of room to wander around and allow yourself to be lured away from the stresses of the outside world. Bliss Boutique recently underwent a change in ownership, but fans of the boutique will be glad to know that many factors of the store remain the same. The new owners, Jeff and Cindy Vander Linden, in addition to their daughter, Valerie Vander Linden, have maintained the integrity that initially put Bliss Boutique on the list of go-to Omaha boutiques. Although Valerie is significantly younger than your average boutique owner, don’t be fooled—she was meant to run this store. As Valerie explains, she worked as a sales clerk at Bliss Boutique during her college years. While she interned in corporate America, she realized her heart remained at Bliss Boutique… she missed the opportunity to work one-on-one with shoppers. “When Bliss fell into my lap, it was the perfect opportunity to jump,” she says. Valerie and her mother, Cindy, attend regional shows and work together to purchase a wide variety of clothing and accessories that will interest and inspire women (including moms!) of all ages. They are drawn toward soft textiles, as they recognize the value of feeling comfortable while looking fashionable. They purchase from a wide variety of clothing lines, which lets them offer clothing for many different occasions. Valerie specializes in working with new moms. She likes nothing better than having someone walk into her store feeling worn out and leave feeling beautiful, she says. She loves to pamper her customers and show them different ways to wear their clothing. Versatile clothing that can be worn during multiple seasons is popular among many women, especially busy moms. At Bliss Boutique, they also recognize that not all women’s bodies are built the same. Valerie ensures that the store carries denim that is designed to flatter curves rather than hide them. She also helps her customers pick out a unique piece of jewelry or beautiful scarf to accessorize an outfit, allowing a piece to be dressed up or down. Customers rave about Bliss Boutique online. “Love the atmosphere and the friendly staff,” says customer SB. “I had to bring my kids, and they were so sweet to

both of them. I will be back soon for more shopping!” Another happy customer notes that “the owner is so down-to-earth and so kind! She Valerie Vander Linden, is so willing to help and go the extra mile for you! owner I highly recommend this place to everyone in the area!!!” Valerie is incredibly passionate when it comes to human interaction. She wants every woman who enters her store to feel pampered and to leave feeling special. With a variety of styles and price points, she can certainly find something for everyone. Although Bliss Boutique doesn’t carry men’s clothing, Valerie welcomes boyfriends and husbands to the store! She’s happy to help them select gifts for the special women in their lives. If they just don’t know what to choose, Valerie recommends a gift certificate—what could be a better gift than the opportunity to come to Bliss Boutique and let Valerie provide a little pampering? As customer DDH says, “Thank you for the spectacular shopping experience today! Friendly, fun, fantastic. I WILL be back.” If you’re interested in learning more about this one-of-a-kind boutique, check it out online at www. blissboutiqueomaha.com. You can sign up for email blasts to be the first to know about specials and events. Be sure to check out their ladies nights! Talk to Valerie about booking your very own private shopping party, where you and a few friends have the store to yourselves. It’s like playing dress-up—for adults! Personal shopping with your closest friends sounds like a really fun way to spend the evening. Whether you are looking for a casual and comfy outfit for dinner or an exquisite dress for a special event, start at Bliss Boutique—you may not have to go anywhere else! Let Valerie and her staff show you just how fabulous you are and help you find the clothes that will make you feel confident. Doesn’t that sound like bliss? Bliss Boutique is open six days a week (closed Sundays) at 12100 West Center Road, Suite 607, in Omaha. You can reach Valerie by phone at 402-991-3595. WE

October 23–November 21

Happy birthday, Scorpio! This month, your priorities will be emotional equilibrium and a harmonious home life. Your professional life has been put on the back burner, allowing you to engage in more quality family time. You may use this calmer time to outline your future career plans and devise ways to achieve them during the upcoming year. Everything is happening as hoped. Sagittarius (Nov 22–Dec 21) Domestic issues will dominate. Your professional life may take a back seat as you try to establish peace and happiness at home during the next couple of months. Capricorn (Dec 22–Jan 19) This is the time to stay bold and independent. You are not bound by circumstance. You have the strength to change any situation to your advantage. Aquarius (Jan 20–Feb 18) Stay aware of your goals and you will have the power to overcome challenges that may be heading your way. Conserve your energy to prepare for a hectic social life. Pisces (Feb 19–Mar 20) You are passionate about your career goals. You have the support of the planets for your professional achievements. They will guide you to success. Songs of Life

Living the Music, One Song at a Time By Sharon Knierim

In movies and most television programming, dialogue and action alike are accompanied by some kind of music. It is this musical accompaniment that often sets the tone for the movie or program. At the very least, the mood of a scene can easily be expressed by the melody going on in the background. In some presentations, the music seems to be a major character itself. Sometimes, the music can exude a certain mood or emotion when a particular character is on display. In psychological thrillers and monster movies, we hear and are often entranced by tense chords signifying to us that something dreadful is about to happen…that the surprise around the corner is not going to be a happy one. Is the main character in grave danger? We cannot resist riding along on an adventure in total suspense and something close to “film fear.” Many of us watch these showings with blankets over our heads or with one eye closed. Still, we want to know what will happen next to our hero or heroine. If you are the romantic type, you may find yourself entranced by the haunting melodies of love songs and sentimental songs phrased just perfectly to make our hearts beat at an unnatural rate. This is the kind of entertainment that prompts us to grab extra tissues.

Then, of course, there are those melodies which stay with us for a lifetime. These are the songs that help define who we are and how we view ourselves and others. They become a window on our world. Some songs and pieces of music help us bring back a particular memory or a particular time in our lives. Do we recall the first songs we learned in childhood? Yes, we do. They were always simple and happy songs with cheery thoughts, telling nice stories or describing lovable characters. Our first song was “Little Ducky Duddle,” and I still know all the words to it…which is quite an accomplishment for a woman who can’t remember what she did five minutes ago. Reliving our younger days of dating and courting makes us remember romantic songs, usually theme songs from a blockbuster movie such as “Love Story” or “Romeo and Juliet.” Earlier generations remember the crooners, who sang about

human emotions and were the hit of their day. In my generation, there were plenty of anti-war songs being played on the radio and jukebox. These songs, too, are memorable, though the memories they evoke may not be our most pleasant. These songs may transport us to a time in our lives when confusion and bitterness were very common. If you like classical music, you are in good company. We are so fortunate to have with us today so many of the musical treasures from hundreds of years ago. Many of these compositions are filled with chords and melodies which later became the foundation for much of modern music. Yesterday’s rich scores can be found in many of our contemporary tunes. Music can also be a great motivator—and not just to keep us energized while we exercise. When our children were school-aged, they were terrible morning procrastinators. As I flipped pancakes and stirred oatmeal, I extemporaneously made up and belted out country and western tunes. I was not particularly fond of this style of music, and the children were even less enthusiastic. This daily practice encouraged them to hurry and got them out the door on time! Particularly engaging are the songs of the holidays, which are typically tender or silly. As we approach Thanksgiving, everyone tries to sing through “Over the River and Through the Woods” at least once. “We Gather Together” is also a song reflecting the Thanksgiving spirit and mood. Both songs remind us of the importance of being together. Of course, the ultimate in shared songs (particularly holiday songs) is the Christmas carol, which is so often sung as a group. Do you wonder how many holiday songs have been written and sung about this last great holiday of the year? The supply seems endless, and the variety makes it difficult to choose a favorite. Whether you hum or sing or whistle these musical themes, many of them inspire us to pause and take a look at the fleeting year and to remember what is good in life. Songs about hope and love and a snowman named Frosty will stay with us forever. We will never run out of songs. What we sing about is up to us, but they are always songs of life. What kind of song might be written for or about you? WE

Vantage Point

Lakota Lodge Counseling Helping to Heal Trauma Victims and Families By Jackie Byers

Dr. Arlene Garcia offers counseling based on her many years of experience and steeped in her Lakota heritage. With numerous degrees and 43 years of experience, Dr. Garcia has much to offer her clients, many of whom have suffered various kinds of trauma. “The process of helping trauma victims heal is complex and takes time,” Dr. Garcia says. She understands that healing from trauma is not just about the person who experienced the trauma. “If one member of a family suffers from trauma, the whole family suffers,” she points out. Dr. Garcia’s patience and compassion have enabled her to help many patients and families heal during her decades as a counselor. Dr. Garcia earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. She earned her PhD from Chelsea University, in London, England. She spent her early years as a counselor at the Veterans Administration Hospitals in Lincoln, Grand Island, Omaha, and Knoxville, IA. While there, Dr. Garcia worked with Vietnam veterans who suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a condition that is quite common but can be a challenge to treat. “When I was at the VA,” she shares, “I was one of three clinicians who initiated the PTSD program in Omaha in 1993.” During World Wars I and II, many soldiers suffered from PTSD, which was called “shell shock” at the time. Not much was done to treat it. The outward effects of PTSD vary in nature and severity. As Dr. Garcia points out, “Some victims become withdrawn and morose and find it difficult to talk about their symptoms. Others engage in dangerous and selfharming behaviors.” Dr. Garcia finds that sympathy is not what these patients need. “When I am trying to help a client who suffers from PTSD, it is more effective to hear what they say and don’t say,” she explains. Dr. Garcia has trained therapy dogs herself, and she uses them in her practice. “Therapy dogs have often enabled a client to talk about the experiences that traumatized them,” she says. She recalls a veteran who sat and stroked the therapy dog for 45 minutes before being able to talk about his traumas. Entering Dr. Garcia’s office, you experience the initial step toward healing—quiet comfort. Colors, aromas, and inviting furnishings offer this comfort. Soft and subtle lighting and sounds soothe the senses. Many of the decorative elements reflect Dr. Garcia’s heritage. “I am Oglala Lakota by birth, and I have been

adopted by the Rosebud Lakota and Winnebago tribes,” Dr. Garcia shares. “The values I have Dr. Arlene Garcia, learned from my heritage are essential to my life and with her therapy dog, Red Feather to the work I do with my clients. Number one of the seven values of Lakota life is the power of prayer.” This is not a denominational matter, she stresses. “It simply means communicating with your personal higher power. What you call him does not matter. How often you communicate with the spirit of the divine is what matters. Also vital in my approach is respect. It begins with respect for self and also involves respect for family, for community, and for all of life. This leads very naturally to caring compassion for others.” “Humility is another essential Lakota value,” she continues. “We must “The values I have learned remember that we are neither better nor less from my heritage are essential than others. Prayer, respect, caring and to my life and to the work compassion, honesty and truth, generosity I do with my clients… and helping, humility, I know the seven principles and wisdom are the vital seven values. Individuals create a challenging path to who value them gain strength to overcome follow, but it is a path that great obstacles. I know the seven principles can lead to healing.” create a challenging path to follow, but it is a path that can lead to healing.” Dr. Garcia’s warm smile and gentle encouragement make it possible for many people to overcome the obstacles of trauma. Because of her successful treatment of Marine Corps Vietnam veterans, Dr. Garcia has been declared an honorary Marine. Lakota Lodge Counseling is located at 8998 L Street, in Omaha. Fresh Concept

You’re So Vein You Probably Think This Article Is About You—And It Is! By Kylie Gumpert

When our veins are functioning properly, most of us don’t give them a second thought. But for women who have experienced what happens when veins don’t function as they normally should, veins can bring a great deal of discomfort, both physical and emotional. Most of us will experience vein issues at some point in our lives, either from an underlying health condition or as a natural consequence of aging. However, there are steps you can take to prevent some kinds of vein trouble and treatments that can help solve problems that arise. According to the Office on Women’s Health, slightly more than half of American women have some type of vein problem, and problems are more likely to occur as we age. Thankfully, treatments for vein issues have become more accommodating. When vein problems cause physical pain or pose a health risk, treatment is often covered by insurance. Two of the most common vein issues are varicose veins and spider veins. In the case of varicose veins, weakening of vein walls or valves makes it more difficult to return blood to the heart, and blood may end up pooling in the veins. These veins eventually become misshapen and enlarged, protruding underneath the skin’s surface in twisted-looking coils. Varicose veins are most likely to form on the legs, and they can cause swelling, a feeling of heaviness, fatigue, and even ulcers or darkening of the skin. Spider veins are tiny, engorged veins that can be found on many parts of the body, including the face. They appear underneath the surface of the skin in a web-like formation. They can be caused by hereditary factors, injuries, or sun exposure. Sometimes spider veins can cause an itching or burning feeling, but they rarely cause serious issues. Because spider veins are more of a cosmetic issue than a medical issue, their treatment is often not covered by insurance. Varicose veins and spider veins are usually superficial veins, which lie closest to the skin and are the most susceptible to damage. Their proximity to the surface of the skin is why they are so visible, which can be frustrating but is less likely to be a threat to your health. The veins that you can’t see are the ones that are more likely to cause serious health problems. Blood clots are often a serious vein problem, especially if they end up lodged in the heart or lungs. Clots can form in superficial or deep veins, which are found in the center of the legs, arms, and hips. If a large blood clot breaks free and travels through the venous system to the heart or lungs, it can prevent blood flow to these vital organs. About 1 in 20 people will experience a deep vein blood clot (known as deep vein thrombosis) in their lifetime. When a clot moves from a deep vein and lodges in the lung, it’s called a pulmonary embolism, which can cause heart failure. The presence of clots can damage a vein’s structure and cause swelling, pain, cramps, itching,

20

and sores. If you experience these symptoms and are suspicious about what is causing them, visit your medical provider right away. It is possible to repair and correct damaged, swollen, and misshapen varicose veins, and it is possible to remove parts of veins that are no longer functioning properly. When treatment is successful, the body heals quickly and the signs and symptoms of varicose veins are often significantly decreased, if not entirely gone. As a step toward treatment for varicose veins, most insurance companies require patients to first try wearing compression stockings for a designated amount of time. These apply pressure to the lower legs to reduce swelling and improve blood flow. If the stockings do not significantly improve your symptoms, it’s time to consider procedural options. Radiofrequency ablation often targets the saphenous vein, which is the longest vein in the body and runs along the inside of the legs. The deterioration of this vein is often what leads to varicose veins lower in the leg. In this procedure, a catheter that exerts radiofrequency energy is inserted into the vein. As the catheter moves through the vein, the heat closes up the vein, bit by bit. The body then naturally reroutes blood through nearby, healthier veins. Patients are able to walk right out of the office after the procedure and will need to wear compression stockings for the next couple of days. Endovenous laser treatment is very similar to radiofrequency ablation except that the catheter inserted has a laser fiber. This exerts heat, damaging the vein and causing it to clot, effectively closing it. As with most vein treatment procedures, the patient is likely to bruise some and will need to wear a compression garment over the area for a few days but will be able to immediately get up and walk around.

www.womensedition.com

Sclerotherapy and foam sclerotherapy can close pesky varicose veins, although it may take a few weeks to see a difference, and multiple injections may be necessary. A physician will inject a solution, often salt-based, that effectively closes up the veins. The foam solution is used for larger veins. Vein stripping involves gradually removing parts of a varicose vein as opposed to sealing it off. This method is one of the oldest for treating varicose veins. It has a longer recovery time than newer methods, as well as a higher risk of adverse effects. Decreasing or eliminating the appearance of spider veins is also possible, although the procedures necessary to do this tend not to be covered by insurance. Veinwave is a newer procedure to eliminate small spider veins, even those on the face or nose. The doctor will insert a very fine needle near the spider vein, and the needle will produce focused heat that damages and destroys the vein. Patients may feel a quick prick, but there is minimal risk of scarring. Laser treatments are another option for spider vein treatment. First, the doctor numbs the treatment area. The laser then pierces the skin, heats up the vein, and causes it to clot together and close. It may take two to six treatments to eliminate the appearance of the spider vein, and it is very important to keep the treated area out of the sun until it heals. A new technique called VenaSeal is an FDA-approved system used to permanently treat varicose veins close to the surface of the skin. This procedure involves using a small amount of medical glue which is injected into the affected vein. VenaSeal does not require any immediate post-treatment pain medication or uncomfortable compression stockings. Most vein treatments have immediate or close-to-immediate

results, and patients can often resume their normal daily activities right after their procedure. Despite the success of these treatments, there is no guarantee that troublesome veins won’t continue to develop, especially because we are all more likely to develop these issues as we age. Therefore, it’s important to take steps to keep your veins as healthy as possible—whether you’ve experienced vein problems yet or not. Excess body weight can harm blood flow, so you should always get regular exercise and maintain a healthy diet. During the day, you should make sure you change positions regularly. If you spend most of the day sitting, elevate your feet every once in a while to give the veins in your lower legs a break. Wearing compression stockings can also help reduce the chances of developing varicose or spider veins. Wearing sunscreen on your face and any other exposed skin is especially important for preventing spider veins. In some cases, wearing high heels can lead to vein problems, so it may be beneficial to alternate them with different kinds of shoes. Tight clothing, especially around the waist, hips, and upper legs can also cut off circulation and damage your veins over time, if worn too often. As with any health issue, there are factors that make a person more or less likely to develop vein problems. We don’t have much control over risk factors like increasing age, family medical history, or natural changes in hormone levels, but we can definitely take steps to avoid obesity, increase physical activity, and decrease sun exposure. Help maintain healthy blood flow and improve your overall health! Nearly Naked Lingerie Company Are You Wearing the Right Bra? By Kate Beiting

Three years ago, Karey Straube took a dare from a friend, and she is happy she did. She was out of town on vacation, complaining to her friend about how her bra fit. “I should just open my own store!” she told her friend. He began asking questions like, “Are you serious about that?” and “What types of things would be in the store?” A few years later, Karey is the owner of Nearly Naked Lingerie Company. The sunny shop is filled wall-to-wall with lingerie, bras, panties, robes, nightgowns—any underthings a gal could want. “Lingerie is a big business,” says Karey. “All women want well-fitting items under their clothing!” As with many of us, Karey’s frustration with uncomfortable bras began as soon as she started wearing them. “When I was growing up, my mom would just buy my bras and give them to me. What did I know? I wore them to school and then ripped them off the minute I got home.” We hear ya, Karey! It was

this frustration that led her to the lingerie business. “I knew a bit about business, but what I really knew was what I demanded in bras and lingerie,” she continues. “I used to have to make trips out of town to a bigger market to get the merchandise I needed. There is no reason for me to not be able to get bras or other pieces in Omaha—this is a pretty big city!” Karey knew she wasn’t the only woman frustrated with lingerie shopping. “I would chat with friends or relatives, and women were always complaining about experiences with ill-fitting underwear and limited choices. I could see that I was not alone. I did some research on the need and suppliers, made a business

plan, and here we are!” Family and friends were supportive, and the market was keen to welcome a shop that caters to small and large sizes—and all the sizes in between. Karey knows that walking around in an ill-fitting bra can be painful and will not be flattering, no matter what your body type is. “When I’m out shopping or at a restaurant, I am really shocked at how many women are just settling for bras. If those women would just come in and let me fit them, they would be amazed at how good a great bra can be. A good bra is like a hug…it feels warm and cozy and natural.” To find the best bras for you, you need to start with a private fitting, even if that sounds like a daunting prospect. “I know a bra fitting can make some women feel uncomfortable, but we are very professional here. I listen closely to get an idea of what that woman wants, what she’s been wearing, and how I can ease her fears. It takes just a few minutes.” Karey can fit any body type and carries a large selection of bras in band sizes 30–42 and cup sizes B–M. “I know our customers feel better when they leave with a great fit. They look better, too! A bra that fits correctly can change a woman’s posture, her silhouette, her whole appearance. All women deserve to feel beautiful, no matter what their size!” Karey asserts. Nearly Naked Lingerie Company also carries robes,

nightgowns, bodysuits, and stockings. “We are proud to carry Elomi, Freya, Fantasy, and Anita, just to name a few brands,” Karey notes. “I will order an item if we don’t have it. If a customer tells me about an item she has seen, I will research it immediately and locate it if I can. I carry unique pieces for petites as well as full-figured women.” “I enjoy meeting interesting people,” Karey tells me. Sometimes, husbands come to the store because they are tired of listening to their wives complain about ill-fitting bras. “No matter the circumstance, I would love to have you come in and give us a try! We can do group parties, bachelorette parties, or wedding showers. It has been a joy to offer this service. I love my job.” Happy customers share great reviews of the store and the customer service: “I have a hard time finding my size, and the owner helped me find the perfect bra… it was the BEST experience.” Find Nearly Naked Lingerie Company on Facebook and at www.nearlynakedco.com, or call 402-330-1992. Store hours are Monday through Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and closed on Sundays. Metro West Dental Specialty Group An Empowering Dental Experience By Marge Shoemaker

Would you like to smile confidently again? At Metro West Dental Specialty Group, that is their ultimate goal for their patients. This practice provides the most advanced in orthodontic, periodontal, and dental implant care, in a warm and comfortable environment. Dr. Taera Kim and her husband, Dr. Takanari Miyamoto, opened Metro West Dental Specialty Group in 2010 to combine their two specialties. Dr. Kim is an advanced trained orthodontist and Dr. Miyamoto a fellowed periodontist. I recently sat down with Dr. Kim to visit about the success of Metro West Dental Specialty Group and her career as an orthodontist. At Metro West Dental Specialty Group, they believe that healthy, beautiful teeth can boost a person’s confidence and can give them a sense of well-being through, according to Dr. Kim, “our passion for innovation and excellent service.” Dr. Kim grew up in California and studied biochemistry at UCLA. She was inspired by her brother, Dr. Sohn (himself a dentist), to go into

dentistry. She completed her residency training in Orthodontics and received her Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Orthodontics and Master of Science in Dentistry at Boston University, where she also met her husband. In 2007, her husband, Dr. Miyamoto was hired to teach at Creighton University’s dental school (“Number one in the Midwest!” she says proudly), and they moved to Omaha. now are on the faculty at Creighton dental school. Teaching at Creighton has challenged Dr. Kim to grow. “I learn something new every day in the classroom or the lab,” she shares. “Innovation makes you see things in a different light…see the same thing from a different angle…and learn a new skill set.” Dr. Kim explains that their mission at their practice is to advance oral health by educating their patients about the processes and interventions that may be warranted for their care. They believe that education can improve the patient’s experience—that with the right knowledge, the patient is empowered to make a reasonable and informed decision. “We invest time and resources on each team member to create an extraordinary experience for the patient,” says Dr. Kim. Team members are highly trained professionals, working together to perform treatments in the shortest time possible, while keeping the patient’s comfort in mind. Dr. Kim says in her orthodontic practice she utilizes 3D imaging to provide precise orthodontic treatment and planning for each patient. In many cases, orthodontics is used to realign the jaw, correct a bite, or straighten crooked teeth. These conditions are corrected by the use of the latest in treatment options including Invisalign for both teens and adults. She says she works to create confident smiles in patients of all ages. The practice also provides other advanced services, including periodontal reconstruction and regenerative surgery for gum disease and gum recession, aesthetic crown lengthening, and bone grafts. Dental implants are another specialized service; they can implant one or multiple teeth. One of the latest procedures is the All-on-4 dental implant, which is the latest dental implant technology that gives the

patient a complete upper or lower set of teeth using only four implants. For patients’ ultimate comfort, they also offer sedation dentistry. Dr. Kim believes strongly in the concept of success through teamwork. She compares the team to the human body: “The body is made up of parts that must all work together to keep the body running efficiently. Our team works the same way. We work together to do what we must do to give the patient the best, and most positive, experience possible.” Their philosophy is a team approach: growth of the team equals growth of the practice. Doctors Kim and Miyamoto expect each member of the team, including office staff, hygienists, and doctors, “to grow 0.1 percent every day, to become a better person overall.” “We discuss each patient and ask, ‘What is the patient’s experience, and how can we make it better?’ In this way, our team learns to work together to create extraordinary experiences.” Education, Dr. Kim reminds us, enhances the patient’s experience by enabling them to make informed choices. According to Kathleen, a patient at Metro West, “I could never imagine going to anyone else. They genuinely care for their patients. They go above what they have to because they care so much.” Dr. Kim and her team work every day to improve the patient experience, one patient at a time. “I try to identify the problem, and the team works together to find a way to solve it,” she concludes. “One Team! One Goal! Patient First! It works.” Metro West Dental Specialty Group is located at 12110 Port Grace Boulevard, Suite 202, in La Vista. Good Looks

Here’s Lookin’ at You, Kid Lasting Beauty By Loretta McCollum

Today’s women lead hectic lives. Our time is precious, and we spend a significant amount of that time every day ensuring that we look our best by powdering, plumping, thickening, lengthening, defining, tweezing, and trimming. No matter how much effort we put forth, life gets in the way. We get caught in the rain, and our eye makeup turns into grimy black streaks. We nick ourselves shaving our legs and somehow manage to stain our new white blouse. We take our glasses off to apply eyeliner and realize a five-year-old could have done a better job. Frustrating, right? It doesn’t need to be. Wouldn’t it be great to wake up and look polished without having to fumble with pencils, brushes, and sponges? Permanent makeup, also known as cosmetic tattooing, allows us to do just that. It’s a process in which tinted pigment is deposited into the top skin layer by trained technicians. It can thicken, darken, and define eyebrows. Eyeliner can be permanently drawn. It’s an excellent choice for applying lip liner and lip color, helping to correct uneven lips, preventing lipstick bleeding, minimizing the appearance of wrinkles, and giving the appearance of fuller lips. It’s especially great if you’re involved in sports or have eyesight issues, unsteady hands, or cosmetic allergies. Allergic reactions to cosmetic tattooing are extremely rare—much less common than reactions to the ingredients in cosmetics. Permanent makeup can be applied by hand or with a machine. The digital rotary machine is a popular application technique. A

small cartridge with needles deposits pigment into the skin at a rapid pace. It’s relatively quiet and easy to use. Some technicians may opt for a more traditional tattoo coil machine, which can result in finer lines and more precise shading techniques. This is an especially good choice for covering up scarring. In hand application, the pigment is tapped into the skin with a small instrument that resembles a utility knife but has needles instead of a blade. This technique produces a gentle, soft color. Slight irritation may occur with any of these methods, and a topical anesthetic is commonly applied to minimize any discomfort. Is it really permanent? Since pigment is tattooed into the top skin layer and can’t be washed off, it is considered permanent. However, fading does occur over time, and periodic maintenance is required to maintain the same look. Sun exposure and topical products also impact longevity. Permanent makeup lasts up to 10 years. ›››

For a shorter-term commitment, consider semi-permanent makeup. This involves microblading, where a technician uses a blade comprised of small needles to apply color that stays closer to the skin’s surface, fading out more quickly than a tattoo. The typical life of semi-permanent application is two to five years. Now that our eyebrows are perfectly arched and our eyeliner is flawless, what can be done about our lashes? Many women have thin lashes that not even the best onecoat mascara can fix. Welcome Latisse, the first FDA-approved product for lashes. It is also used to treat glaucoma and is available by prescription only. It improves lash length, thickness, and darkness by stimulating the growth cycle and increasing the total number of hairs. Initial results are visible after four weeks, and full results are seen at around 16 weeks. Like all medications, Latisse is associated with certain side effects. You should consult your physician or dermatologist for more information. Spray makeup is another growing trend. It works much like hairspray, setting makeup in place. Tinted spray foundations add color and can dim the glare from bright, white legs. It’s important to spray it onto a sponge first, not directly onto the skin! For the best outcome, consult a local spa or salon. To achieve the best look, you must start with a clean canvas. Electrolysis provides that canvas, removing body hair by destroying the growth center of the hair follicle through the application of electric current during several treatments. It can be used on multiple body parts, including the face, underarms, legs, and bikini area. A mild stinging sensation is typical. Electrolysis is the only permanent hair removal treatment approved by the FDA. Not all beautification procedures are new. Eyebrow threading originated in the Middle East centuries ago and is still an effective grooming practice. Threading is performed by an aesthetician using a double-stranded cotton thread, twisting it around a single hair or an entire row of hairs, and then pulling the hair out from the roots. This is less painful and much faster than tweezing or waxing, and it requires only monthly touch-ups. Less pain and less time? Sounds good to me. Looking great is easier than ever before. To learn more about these procedures, visit your favorite spa, salon, or dermatologist’s office. Sources for this article included: spcp. org, consultingroom.com, webmd.com, and goodhousekeeping.com. A Decade of Experiences Life Is Good I was having a conversation with some women friends the other night about how we have changed over the years. We’re all over 50, and we were reflecting on the past decades of our lives. The more we got into the discussion, the more it became apparent to me that I was sitting with a group of people who really like themselves. They like their lives and they like the future that lies before them. “I don’t like myself, I’m crazy about myself.” —Mae West Most of us have children in their 20s and 30s; some of us have grandchildren. We were remembering those decades of drama in our own lives: the relationship breakups/divorces, the deaths of family members and friends, the sleepless nights with babies, the loss of jobs we loved, and the financial hardships that we all had to face. “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” —E.E. Cummings All of us are emotionally stronger than we were in our 20s, our 30s, and even our 40s. The fascinating thing about having life experience is that it teaches us that nothing is ever as terrible as it may seem in the moment. It teaches us that every terrible situation will pass, no matter what it is.

By Janet Van deWalle

I remember the first time that a young man who I was deeply in love with broke up with me. I was 16 years old. I thought it was the end of the world. I cried. I sobbed. I thought I would never love again. Looking back on that experience 40 years later, I laugh out loud. (As my son, Adam, says, “It’s all relative, and it depends upon your perspective.”) I am so thrilled that I did not end up with that young man. I guess the universe knew that I had asked for so much more and that there was someone a whole lot better out there. His name was Jim, and I was married to him for 33 years before his passing. “Always be a first-rate version of yourself instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.” —Judy Garland Life experience is great. I would not be the person I am today if I hadn’t had the life experiences that I have had in my life. Were some of them heartbreaking? Absolutely. Were some of them exhilarating? Thank goodness, yes! My women friends who were sitting at the table and having this amazing discussion like who they are. Life is good. I anticipate life experience will continue to head us all in this direction! “Be who you are, say what you feel. Those who mind don’t matter. And those who matter don’t mind.” —Dr. Seuss

Doing Stupid Things Doesn’t Mean You’re Stupid Get Smarter—Learn From Mistakes! It is already November! The year has flown by. Reports for the first quarter should be out, and the first semester is rapidly coming to a close. It’s a good time to take stock. How are the kids doing in school? A friend says her kids are doing some “stupid stuff.” Examples include: doing their homework but forgetting to turn it in; getting docked points because there was no name on the paper; waiting until the last minute to do a project that had been assigned weeks ago. I asked if any of those things sounded familiar…they did. As it turns out, we’ve all done stupid stuff and made bad decisions. Smart people learn from their mistakes. When the kids that I tutor complain, I remind them that school is THEIR responsibility…THEIR job. Not everyone loves their job. Smart people do their best and look for the things that make their job easier or more pleasant. Learning to put a positive spin on things helps. Still, we all make mistakes sometimes. The trick is getting our kids (and ourselves) to realize why the decision…or mistake…or action…was a bad one. Most kids are not bad, they just don’t think things through. Sometimes, facing the consequences of their decisions is the only way to find out. That’s why we say hindsight is 20/20. What are the consequences if your kids don’t earn passing grades? Are do-overs allowed? Will they be held back? When

By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS

kids get bad grades, help them figure out why. My grandson was bemoaning the fact that his grades weren’t as good as they should have been last year. “Do you know why?” I asked. He replied that one of the reasons was that he hadn’t done all the work. “What can you do about that?” I questioned. “I have to change my attitude, first,” he answered. “That’s a smart observation,” I replied. We went on to talk about personal responsibility. Kids are like horses—you can lead them to water, but you can’t make them drink. You can give the kids advice and support, but you can’t make them learn…and learning is what school is all about. Making mistakes is okay if you learn from them. In fact, trial and error is a good way to learn. Just don’t call a kid stupid for making dumb mistakes or bad decisions. He’s only human. I believe Forrest Gump was wrong when he said, “Stupid is as stupid does.” Adults make mistakes all the time, for the same reasons kids do…inattention, lack of forethought, even lack of ambition. We’re not stupid. We just do stupid things sometimes. People feel better when they get honest praise for something they’ve done. Remember, kids are people, too. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Enlightened Living LED Lighting Brings Out the Best in Your Home

By Robyn V. Powell

When Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, it changed the world. A century later, the emergence of LED technology has brought the potential to once again fundamentally change the future of lighting. Thanks in large part to greater energy efficiency, longer bulb life, and improved quality of light, LED technology is on everyone’s radar—from homeowners to multinational corporations. Most of us are aware of LED lighting, but many of us hesitate to make the switch because we’re not sure how it differs from conventional lighting or why it may be a better choice. Let’s throw a little light on the subject to illuminate your understanding. LEDs have swept the lighting marketplace for many reasons, most notably their extended lifespans, reduced energy consumption, and lower maintenance requirements. The number one reason for choosing LED lighting is energy efficiency. LED stands for “light-emitting diode,” which is a long-lasting, highly efficient form of lighting. About 80–90 percent of the energy used by an LED bulb goes directly into light. (Compare that with incandescent bulbs, which use only 10 percent of their energy on light and waste the rest on heat.) So, how do LED lights work? As explained by Energy Star, “an electric current passes through a microchip, illuminating tiny light sources we call LEDs, and the result is visible light.” LED bulbs can provide the same amount of light as incandescent bulbs, but

they use up to 85 percent less power, helping you save on your electricity bill without compromising the amount of light. Until 2012, a large barrier to widespread adoption of LED technology was price, but increased competition and lower production costs have lowered prices and improved the consumer’s return on investment. LED bulbs are more expensive up front, but it’s a sound investment. In some cases, consumers have saved as much as several hundred dollars in just one year. The extended life of an LED bulb (30,000 to 50,000 hours versus 1,000 hours for a typical incandescent bulb) means the LED bulb is replacing many incandescent bulbs that you won’t have to purchase. Because LEDs are small and directional, they are ideal for accent or task lighting—on countertops, for example, to aid cooking and reading recipes. This type of light distribution also makes LED bulbs good choices for recessed down lights in kitchens, hallways, bathrooms, and commercial settings. Until recently, one of the biggest drawbacks of LED lighting had been color. Traditional lighting casts a warm yellow glow ›››

that early LED lights could not match. LEDs do not naturally emit white light, which is why they have only recently been used for general purpose lighting. To produce a white light, different colors of LEDs can be combined, or the LEDs can be covered with a material that changes the color. These improved technologies make current LED lighting difficult to distinguish from the familiar warmth of conventional lighting. To ensure that the lighting you choose is the right color and brightness for the intended location, consult a lighting expert. Interior designers and lighting showroom professionals are excellent resources for design application and creating lighting effects. Retrofitting conventional lighting sources to LED is possible in many instances. The dimensions of LED bulbs are similar to standard incandescent bulbs, and they can often fit in the lamps and fixtures you already have. However, LED bulbs can be heavier than incandescent bulbs, so make sure your fixture can support the additional weight. Also, some LED bulbs are not suitable for fully enclosed fixtures; check the label. You may currently enjoy the ambience created by dimming an incandescent bulb. Don’t worry—you can replicate the mood with LED bulbs, if you know which bulb to choose. Dimmer switches generally work by adjusting the amount of voltage the bulb receives, and any old incandescent bulb will do. Light-emitting diodes cannot technically be dimmed (they can only be ON or OFF), but manufacturers have worked around this problem with circuitry designed to make an LED bulb look like it’s dimming. These bulbs are generally labeled “dimmable LEDs.” If you want to use an LED bulb with a dimmer switch, these are the ones to look for. LED lights are free of toxic materials like the mercury found in most lightbulbs and are 100 percent recyclable. And since they last so much longer than incandescent bulbs, one LED bulb can save the material and production of 25 incandescent lightbulbs—a big step toward a greener planet. The future for LED lighting is bright. As competition drives the industry forward, light quality will continue to improve while energy consumption and costs will continue to drop. Check with a lighting designer about how to bring LED technology into your home. Sources for this article included: energy. gov, nema.org, and energystar.gov. WE

Olina’s Nail Lounge and Spa Upscale Nails Without the Upscale Price By Kate Beiting

Take a quick glance at your nails. Are they a little ragged? If the summer sun and the fall winds have taken a toll, there is an answer. Olina’s Nail Lounge and Spa, located at 14158 West Center Road, can help—just in time for the holidays. Olina’s (located on the east side of the strip mall, under Old Chicago) is owned and operated by Nick and Olina Nowatney. Olina’s was founded in 2016, opened in February of 2017, and has quickly become a welcome and stunning presence in the competitive arena of nail salons in Omaha. Nick is retired from the U.S. Army and is not a nail tech—it is his wife, Olina, who has the experience. When Nick first met Olina in Thailand, he was impressed with her work ethic and her desire to build a business. “In Thailand, Olina owned a women’s boutique and was a designer as well as a licensed cosmetologist. Now, she is also a licensed nail tech and aesthetician.” Several years ago, they began thinking about a business to open. “We were looking for a business that Olina could develop,” Nick recalls. “We decided a new, fresh nail spa would be welcomed in Omaha. We wanted to offer an upscale experience without the upscale price. We began researching, designing, and then learning about the challenges of building a business.” Nick has an MBA and a wealth of experience in startups, but he knew this would be a different challenge. “I can’t say enough about the program Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Disabled Veterans,” Nick continues. “These folks helped me focus on what business I wanted to pursue, helped with the plan and execution, and talked me through the vision. What a great opportunity it was to work with them. The vision was taking shape. Olina and I found the space and dove in.” “Our business philosophy is specific but pretty simple,” Nick says. “We want to provide excellent service and a superior experience for the customer. We want to do this in a bright, new, sanitary, and clean environment—the cleanliness, the appearance, and the service are all top-notch.” “We don’t want to be just another run-of-the-mill nail salon,” Nick tells me. “We want to be the salon that wows you! You come in for a bit of relaxation, and you leave after having a great experience. Our salon looks like it’s in a bigger, fancier market—we are excited to bring this concept to Omaha.” Nick says that he and Olina make a great business team. “We complement each other—I do the support behind the scenes, like accounting, payroll, and general salon duties. Olina gets to use her gifts and talents in really molding an outstanding and beautiful salon.”

The salon received a “Best Nail Salon in Omaha” award in 2017. Nick and Olina hope to be competing in this category again in 2018 and beyond. It’s not just spectacular service that sets Olina’s apart—it’s also the impressive wine wall. “We have an alcohol license and sell wine by the glass or bottle,” Nick says. “We offer several varieties of reds, whites, and bubblies, as well as a few beers. On Tuesdays, we have mimosas from 10-3.” The focus of the tastefully decorated salon is the large wraparound nail station island. It’s welllit and has comfortable chairs so clients can relax. “We wanted everything to be visible—from the chairs to the nails to the sanitation,” Nick continues. “We enjoy having group parties and social events. We have hosted several bridal showers and day-of-the-wedding manicures. We also enjoy hosting bachelor or bachelorette parties—or really any type of celebration.” The salon offers classic, deluxe, and premium pedicures, manicures, acrylics, French tips, shellac, gel, Chanel polish, combo mani-pedis, and gentlemen’s pedicures. The salon also offers jelly-pedis (with Rose, Milk & Honey, or Pearl Glow), dipping powder, and nail art. They have a kids’ menu for children under 10. For skin care products, Olina’s is proud to offer Image Skincare. “We know you have many salons to choose from,” Nick says. “We would love to have you come in and experience Olina’s. We’re so sure you will be pleased that we offer a guarantee—if you are not happy, come back within five days, and we will take care of the problem.” Olina’s Nail Lounge and Spa is open Tuesday through Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Outdated Kitchen?

Invigorate Your Cabinets with Refacing By Anne Yankus

Whether you’ve just bought a new house with an outdated kitchen or you’ve been staring down the same worn-out cabinets for years, it’s tough to pull the trigger on full cabinet replacement. You know those cabinets have to go, but it’s expensive...not to mention the inconvenience of not being able to use your kitchen during construction. If you’re looking for an alternative solution, you’re in luck. You don’t have to replace your cabinets when you can just reface them for a fraction of the cost! What is cabinet refacing, you ask? It’s simple, really. Refacing cabinets is just a matter of replacing cabinet doors and drawer fronts after covering your old cabinet frames with new veneer or plywood. The whole process can be done using hammer and nails, adhesives, or self-stick veneers. Refacing can be done in the kitchen, in the bathroom, or in any room where you have cabinets installed. When should you choose refacing over replacement? Of course, refacing requires a sound framework. If your current cabinet frames are heavily damaged by moisture or just so old that they’re falling apart, it’s probably time to replace. But if your framework is solid, don’t underestimate just how much time and money refacing can save you. Remodeling your kitchen with a full cabinet replacement

can cost tens of thousands of dollars, and you might not be able to use your kitchen at all while the job is underway. Refacing, on the other hand, starts as low as $1,000 and can be completed in as little as two to four days. Even on the high end, using solid wood materials, refacing generally costs no more than several thousand dollars, depending on the type of wood you choose and the size of your kitchen. Another benefit of refacing is the lack of remodeling mess. It’s also a greener solution to keep using whatever materials are still in good condition— you’re adding less waste to the landfill than if you tore out and threw away cabinets that were unsightly but still serviceable. There are several choices of refacing materials. Rigid thermofoil and laminate are the cheapest options. While durable, they do run the risk of chipping or cracking over time. Thermofoil can come in many realistic wood-pattern styles. Laminate, while more durable than thermofoil, is more limited ›››

when it comes to door and drawer styles. A mid-range price option is wood veneer. As the name implies, wood veneer looks like wood. It must be protected from moisture or drying with a sealant. The top of the line in cabinet refacing is solid wood. Cosmetically, nothing beats the classic look of real wood. It also has the benefit of being more durable and resilient (dents and scratches can be repaired and refinished). Its downside is its higher cost. You may be thinking that cabinet refacing sounds like a DIY project, but the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association cautions that projects in the kitchen or bathroom are on a whole other level than projects you may have undertaken in the living room or bedroom. The prowess with which a kitchen remodel is completed will factor into the overall value of your home, and potential buyers may turn away from a kitchen that looks like it was worked on by an amateur. Unless you are a skilled carpenter yourself, it’s smarter to call in a pro for cabinet refacing. A professional carpenter will already have all the right tools and skills to get the job done quickly and avoid any disastrous mishaps. How do you find a good cabinet refacing professional to get the job done, though? You obviously don’t want to trust just anyone in your home, and all the horror stories of contractors cutting corners and leaving a mess behind can make anyone wary. In cases like this, it’s best to start with recommendations from friends and family who have had their cabinets refaced. Neighbors are often a good bet for contractor reviews, since their houses are likely the same age as yours and they may be facing the same home projects. Don’t forget to check out consumer-written reviews online. Once you’ve got a short list, make some calls. Be shrewd, but not rude— only you know what’s best for you, your house, and your budget. Ask whether they’re able to do the kind of work you’re looking for, and ask if they have any special certifications, guarantees, or recommendations from former customers. Just imagine—you may be only a few days away from the kitchen cabinets you’ve always dreamed of! Sleep Disturbances A Real Nightmare

By KellyAnn Hanzlik

Everybody sleeps, which means everybody has an opinion about sleep. Some of them are admonishments: “Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.” Some of them are funny, like, “Laugh, and the world laughs with you…snore, and you snore alone,” or “People who say they sleep like a baby usually don’t have one.” It’s fun to giggle at sleep jokes, but if you have a sleep disorder, it quickly becomes no laughing matter. The Mayo Clinic Center for Sleep Medicine defines sleep disorders as “changes in the way you sleep. They result in sleep deprivation and increase your risk of injury as well as other health issues.” How many sleep disorders are there? A lot! According to the Stanford Sleep Medicine Center, there are over 100 different sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, insomnia, shiftwork or circadian disorders, restless leg syndrome (also called Willis-Ekbom disease), narcolepsy, jet lag, snoring, sleepwalking, and night terrors. Some of these are short-lived, and some of them may plague you for years. Nearly 25 percent of Americans have sleep problems, so the odds are that you know someone who struggles with sleep—and it might just be you. According to Dr. Jennifer Martin, Associate Professor of Medicine at UCLA and spokesperson for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), “Getting a good night’s sleep is an important aspect of living well. Chronically poor sleep can lead to health problems, and reaching out to a board-certified sleep

medicine provider is the best way to get help.” The London Sleep Centre states, “A good night’s sleep is essential for our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. There is ample evidence that disturbed sleep leads to short-term and long-term detrimental effects.” Such effects can include increased risk of diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Sleep deprivation can also lead to traffic accidents. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, driving while drowsy can be just as dangerous as driving while drunk. Of course, anyone who feels tired could end up driving drowsy. People who drink alcohol, take medications that cause sleepiness, work rotating or night shifts, or have some kind of sleep disorder are at higher risk of doing so. Sleep disorders have many different causes, including stress, anxiety or depression, pain and discomfort, medical conditions, medications, travel, and behaviors such as eating and drinking certain

www.womensedition.com

foods and beverages that can interfere with sleep. A sleep specialist can help determine the source and severity of the problem. Where can you get help? Talk to your doctor—and your dentist. (Dentists actually pioneered the use of oral appliances to help treat obstructive sleep apnea.) And check out the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. They set the standard and promote excellence in sleep medicine health care, education, and research, and they have a combined membership of 10,000 accredited member sleep centers and individual members. On their website, they provide a searchable database for finding sleep specialists and telemedicine options, and they’ve compiled a wealth of information, including resources for teachers. Diagnosis of a sleep disorder typically includes a consultation with a sleep specialist and maintaining a sleep diary. Your doctor may also recommend an ActiGraph, which involves wearing a watch-like device that records your activities and sleep patterns over time, or completing an overnight sleep study (polysomnography), which records various parameters, including breathing, heart rate, eye and leg movements, as well as oxygen levels and brain waves, during sleep. Treatments can include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), bright light therapy, and medications such as modafinil, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, sodium oxybate, clonazepam, and melatonin. Because the causes of sleep disorders vary widely, treatments for different disorders can be very different. If a sleep disorder is caused by an airway problem, a device may be the solution. A continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device is a mask you wear while you’re sleeping. Pressurized air flows through the mask, helping to keep your airway open. You may also benefit from an oral appliance, similar to a retainer or mouth guard, that is worn while sleeping. The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine notes that oral appliances are popular because they are comfortable, quiet, portable, and easy to care for. In some cases of an obstructed airway, surgery may be required to fix the problem. If you can’t get to sleep or are experiencing excessive daytime sleepiness, don’t waste another day. Discuss your symptoms with your doctor, your dentist, or a sleep specialist, and you’ll be on your way to the good night’s sleep you deserve. An Inside Look

A Fresh Take on Living With Assistance Join the Granville Family By Marge Shoemaker

One of the first things visitors to Granville Assisted Living will notice is the absence of a code to punch in or a bell to announce their arrival. Granville is what is called an “open” or “non-institutional” community for seniors who either cannot or do not wish to live independently. It is built to be accessible to all, with everything located on one floor. The main entrance opens into a common area with comfortable seating arranged in conversational groupings—a common living room, if you will. It doesn’t feel like walking into a facility…it feels like walking into a home. Apartments are located on the perimeter of the building so that each one gets natural light. There are 40 units in five configurations, ranging from studio apartments to two-bedroom units and “deluxe” units with patios. Most of the apartments are currently occupied single dwellers, but Granville does have facilities for couples. Wide hallways throughout the building are hard-surfaced to more easily accommodate residents in wheelchairs and those whose walking is a little unsteady. There are seating areas, gardens, and patios available outdoors. Executive Director Jaci (pronounced “Jackie”) Ryan has held her post for six months. “I’m relatively new here at Granville, though I’ve been in the business for eight years,” she shares. “I came to work with seniors from the hospitality business. The industries are not that different. Our residents have needs and wants, just as hotel guests do; the big difference is that our residents are here for a longer stay.” On her office wall, Jaci has a chart of all the units, coded by type, and the name of each resident. “This chart allows me to keep up with unit availability and quickly see where to find each resident,” she notes. There are also limited guest suites available for a small fee, which includes a continental breakfast. “It’s convenient to have space for visiting family to be near their loved ones,” Jaci says, smiling. She believes that Granville’s senior residents have all the same rights they would have if they were living in their own homes. Jaci’s goal for new residents is that they stay through the end of life. Exceptions can occur if a resident needs a higher level of care than Granville can provide or if he or she becomes a danger to themselves or others. In those cases, Jaci and the staff are happy to help the resident’s family make other arrangements. Jaci is glad that Granville is a small community for several reasons. First, fewer residents makes it possible to know everyone by name. Also, because of the ranchstyle construction and layout of the building, there are no elevators, stairs, or hidden spaces to confuse the residents. “Our residents can feel confident that they

48

November 2017

can go for a walk around the building and eventually get back to their own doorway without getting lost,” she points out. Each apartment bears the name of the resident within, and doors are individually decorated to “welcome the resident home.” Jaci has also instituted several activities to enhance the lives of Granville residents. Because it is vital for health that seniors are as physically, mentally, and spiritually active as possible, Granville residents are encouraged to enroll in Brain Health University. This program offers 7 semesters of different courses. A resident must successfully complete 18 sessions per semester to graduate. Courses are designed to introduce different concepts and ideas and to maintain skills doing fun activities such as “Minute to Win It” and “Giant Bingo.” Some Wii bowling was going on as we chatted…the cheers and laughter were audible evidence of people having a good time. Several residents had recently taken a trip to Gifford Farm. “When you gently and gradually introduce new activities,” Jaci stresses, “everyone has fun!” She also offers a family night, with an array of activities designed to include everyone, even young visitors. Jaci is determined that Granville residents and staff feel they are “one big, happy family.” On her wall, Jaci has posted a saying: “It is a privilege to grow old…many don’t have the opportunity!” Her goal is to make sure that those celebrating the privilege of growing old at Granville do so with dignity and a sense of fun. Several residents attest to her success. Helen notes, “I’ve been to three other homes…no others are as friendly as here. Everybody knows everyone by first name and says hello.” Resident Betty shares, “Granville is a nice, clean, cheery place; we have so many fun activities.” Granville Assisted Living is located at 8507 Granville Parkway, in La Vista. They are managed by Senior Lifestyle, which operates 231 senior communities in the United States (five in Nebraska). Focus on Finance

Win, Win Encouraging Employee Engagement By George Morgan

The conventional wisdom is that when companies want to improve profitability, they begin by cutting back on wages. While this may have an element of truth, the only beneficiary of this outcome is the employer, and in the long run it may end up actually costing the employer. For over 30 years, the Gallup organization has studied an alternative to this approach. It has spent significant amounts of time, energy, and money studying the impact that engaged employees have on the profitability of a company. An “engaged employee” is one who is enthusiastic about his or her job and so takes positive action to further the company’s reputation and interests. Over the years, Gallup has gathered significant data that documents the difference in profitability that engaged employees have as opposed to those who are either unengaged or actively disengaged. Engaged employees tend to be healthier than their non-engaged coworkers and thus reduce the amount of sick leave taken. Engaged employees stay with their companies longer and thus reduce the costs and effort needed to replace them. Furthermore, engaged employees create greater customer loyalty. Unengaged and actively disengaged employees are not only less productive than their engaged counterparts, but they also are more likely to steal from the company, negatively influence their coworkers, miss workdays, and drive otherwise loyal customers away. Gallup estimates that unengaged and actively disengaged employees cost the U.S. economy $500 billion annually. The historical data shows that for the past three decades, employee engagement has hovered around 22 percent of the U.S. labor force. Put another way, 78 percent of the American labor force is either unengaged or actively disengaged. Reducing this number could dramatically alter the profitability of individual companies and have a significant impact on our national GDP. There are many ways that companies can go about increasing the percentage of their labor force that is actively engaged in their work. A potential starting point for increasing employee engagement is to make sure that the company’s 401(k) is operating effectively. An efficient 401(k) is one that, from a cost and operation perspective, is working well. An effective 401(k) is one where the employees are excited about the program, give credit to the company for providing it to them, and, thus, become engaged. To begin transforming an ineffective 401(k) into an effective one, the company should examine the ease of participation and the way it conveys information about the program to the workforce. Next, a two-pronged educational program needs to be implemented. The first component of this education unit should be aimed at increasing employee

50

November 2017

participation. Nationally, only 71 percent of all eligible employees participate in their 401(k) program, and the majority of these are at the minimum level. Part of this educational effort needs to focus on the employer match portion of the program and inform employees on the cost of turning it down. Employers may say that the broker or the mutual fund that has the investment component of the 401(k) plan occasionally comes out and talks to employees about the program. While this may be true, a recent study by the Securities and Exchange Commission pointed out that there are a lot of resources in the community that can provide more in-depth and objective education. The 401(k) program requires that the individual participant must make his or her own investment decisions, but the majority of these participants have no experience or education in this area. As a result, many participants become overwhelmed, and they end up making decisions by default. Both employers and employees must understand that the investment side of the 401(k) program results in a situation where the process lends itself to a simple investment solution. The vast majority of 401(k) plans restrict the investment choices to mutual funds. The expenses associated with actively managed funds are paid by the owners, which reduces the investment return and, over the course of several decades, can end up costing participants tens of thousands of dollars. Alternatively, passive index funds have minimal expenses, and have outperformed their expensive cousins in the long run. Educating and mentoring participants in the use of these funds has the potential to increase investment performance and reduce stress. When participants feel comfortable with and are, therefore, successful with the investment solution, plan participation increases in terms of both people and dollars. Bottom line: Where workers are engaged, everybody wins. Sources for this article included: www.gallup.com. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy.

Short-Term Rehabilitation Recover in Comfort With Specialized Care By Linda Barnes

After hospitalization for surgery, a stroke, or some other medical setback, what comes next? Patients often need a strategy to transition from hospital to home. In the old days, the only option following a hospital stay may have been nursing home care. Today, a growing number of short-term rehabilitation facilities offer a more desirable choice. Whether you are recovering from joint replacement, stroke, heart attack, or surgery, short-term care combines rehabilitation services with professional medical care. It’s the perfect level of care for someone who can’t care for herself alone but isn’t so incapacitated that she needs acute nursing care. Physical, occupational, and speech therapy are among the essential services in short-term rehab. Aftercare following orthopedic surgery or a heart attack is also an important element of short-term rehab. It is a comfortable environment in which to recover with the assistance of specially trained staff so patients can go home healthy. Nutritional support, transportation, pain management, and wound care are included in the range of services provided to help patients prepare to get back to the activities they enjoy. Psychological services and coordination of community services are offered, as well. One source estimates that 37 percent of acute hospitalizations require post-acute care. Since 2011, when the first baby boomers

turned 65, the number of seniors has mushroomed. In 2010, one sixth of the adult population in the United States was older than 65 years. By 2030, that number will be one in four. With seniors living longer, the number of joint replacements, strokes, and injuries from falls are rapidly rising. While we’re thankful for the advances in treatment that make recovery possible, even at advanced ages, studies have shown the importance of follow-up care after a senior is discharged from the hospital. One source found that 40 percent of patients over 65 years had medication errors following discharge, and 18 percent were readmitted to the hospital within 30 days. Research shows that a good transition plan results in improved health and fewer readmissions. Why not just go home? In many cases, there’s no one willing or able to care for the senior following a health event. Seniors may resist the idea of an inpatient rehab facility—they may fear that the situation will become permanent. The emphases here should be on the short-term nature of the stay and that it is an important part

of returning to independence. An average stay in short-term rehab is less than three weeks; many stays are only for a few days. Besides expert medical care, many short-term rehab facilities provide outstanding amenities. Private rooms, cable TV and Wi-Fi, a gym, bistro style dining, and a salon or spa are just a few. At the same time, skilled therapists focus on getting patients on the road to recovery. Such a facility might offer wound care after surgery, physical therapy to help regain strength, medication management, and help with bathing while mobility is limited. A stroke patient may benefit from physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Some facilities specialize in recovery from traumatic brain injury. Choosing a facility might be daunting, and it’s always good to get a recommendation from a trusted friend or doctor. However, you can also go to Medicare.gov for a comparison of facilities in your area. Choose “Find in-patient rehabilitation facilities” and type in your zip code. A list of nearby facilities will be created, and you can select the ones you’re considering to compare them. Be sure to determine if insurance or Medicare will pay for your stay. Every insurance policy, including Medicare, will have its own provisions and will require that certain criteria are met. Long-term care insurance generally does not pay for shortterm rehab, but it is smart to investigate all your options. When my mother-in-law had a mild stroke, she was hospitalized for a few days and then transferred to a short-term rehab facility. She benefited from physical therapy and occupational therapy for the slight paralysis she experienced. In addition, she received speech therapy because the stroke had mildly affected her ability to communicate. It was the perfect place for her—a widow with adult children who were working and unable to care for her after her release from the hospital. With a few weeks of specialized therapy, she was able to safely walk with a cane and return to her senior living apartment. If you or a loved one should face the need for a transition after hospitalization, consider a short-term rehabilitation facility. It provides the ideal combination of expert attention to medical needs, therapies specifically geared to the individual, and amenities that feel like home. Peak Performance

Beyond the OB-GYN Midwives, Doulas, and Lactation Consultants By Ashley Anderson

Pregnancy is an exciting but exhausting time. It’s hard to know, especially with your first pregnancy, what kinds of pregnancy services will be most advantageous for you and your family. Even as technology advances, some expectant mothers are leaning toward a more holistic approach to pregnancy and childbirth. Such an approach focuses on the mental, social, and emotional components of bringing a new life into the world, rather than just the physical issues of pregnancy and childbirth. From family planning to delivery to infant care, the right team of professionals can help make your experience the best it can be. Traditional obstetric care is provided by an OBGYN, and many women choose this type of doctor for their primary pregnancy care. An OB-GYN is a medical doctor with advanced training in obstetrics and gynecology. They can provide gynecologic care for women of all ages, can perform medical procedures, and can provide obstetric care during pregnancy and labor and delivery. They can also perform surgery, including caesarian deliveries (C-sections), and may have additional training to care for women with highrisk pregnancies. Although the advanced medical care provided by a physician is sometimes necessary during pregnancy, many women are seeking care beyond the clinic. Midwives and doulas are meeting this need. They work with OB-GYNs inside and outside the doctor’s office. A midwife is a healthcare professional who is skilled in providing holistic pregnancy care. Midwives are commonly registered nurses with additional training or certification to provide complete pregnancy care, from family planning to infant care. Like physicians, they can provide medical care, prescribe medication, and perform deliveries. Midwives typically promote natural births and are experts in normal pregnancies with low use of technology. Midwives can perform deliveries in a hospital, but they may also offer their delivery services at the patient’s home or at a birthing center, depending on the patient’s preference and pregnancy needs. The Greek word “doula” means “woman’s servant.” In modern English, a doula is someone who provides emotional, physical, and educational support for expecting mothers, mothers in labor, and mothers who have recently given birth. The doula is someone who mothers can ask questions of, rely on for support throughout the pregnancy, and trust to advocate for the family’s birthing plan in the delivery room. They are experts in providing assistance with breathing techniques, emotional consulting, massage therapy, and labor positions. Doulas cannot perform medical services unless otherwise trained to do so. The goal of the doula is to enhance the mother’s pregnancy and birthing experience as much as possible and be her support throughout the process.

A lactation consultant is a breastfeeding specialist who helps mothers with feeding their babies. They often work in hospitals or medical clinics where you would be visiting your physician; some are also pediatricians. Lactation consultants help teach new mothers how to breastfeed and can assist women with lactation deficiencies, painful nursing, or latching problems. They can also provide assistance with operating breast pumps, managing milk production and storage, and making sure that the baby is getting enough to eat. Most OB-GYN offices suggest that expecting mothers connect with a recommended lactation consultant. Some or all of this cost may be covered by medical insurance. For a recommendation on a lactation consultant near you, contact your medical professional or delivery center. Different families have different needs, and choosing which pregnancy and childbirth services to use is at the discretion of the expecting family. Some considerations in making this decision include medical conditions or pregnancy complications, the family’s delivery plan and desired setting, as well as preferences regarding the use of traditional medical and technology practices. It’s important to note that the services of a midwife or doula may not be covered by medical insurance. Expecting mothers should contact their insurance providers prior to using these services to see how much is or is not covered; this will help them determine their out-of-pocket costs. Your medical professional can help you investigate these costs and recommend service providers. Pregnancy is an emotional time in a new family’s life, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. There are many medical professionals and service providers to help you along the way. For some women, a traditional OB-GYN is the way to go, even if the pregnancy and childbirth are not complicated. Taking a more holistic approach with the help of a doula or midwife may better meet your family’s needs. Try talking to friends or family members whose approach sounds like your own; they may be able to offer provider recommendations. If you have questions, consult with your primary care physician about the services you want during this exciting time in your life. A Green Car in Every Garage? Hybrid and Electric Vehicles Offer More Than Ever Before By Julie Kuntze

The first few hybrid and electric vehicles left a lot to be desired. Early adopters either enjoyed the novelty of ownership or were sincerely dedicated to supporting the cause; drivers sacrificed power and many of the comforts of traditional cars—and they paid a premium for it. Manufacturers have come a long way since then, improving their greenest vehicles in practically every way. Hybrid vehicles are powered by a combination of fuel and electricity. Their energy management system determines when to use electricity and when to use gasoline, often relying on electricity until the battery charge is depleted and then switching to fuel. This reduces the amount of fuel required to power the car, but there are many other benefits of hybrids, including tax breaks (available in many states), reduced emissions, lower premiums through some insurance carriers, and a higher resale value. Prospective buyers should understand the difference between traditional hybrids and plug-ins. As cars.usnews.com notes, “Traditional hybrid cars do not require a charge via electrical outlet. Their batteries gain power by charging while a vehicle uses its wheels, brakes, and engine.” A plug-in, as its name implies, requires charging downtime, plugging into an outside power source to restore its energy reserves. The first generations of hybrid vehicles were treated as

novelties, often with whimsical details, and felt to some drivers more like toys than driving machines. The cockpits and interiors of 2017 and 2018 models, on the other hand, are very similar to traditional models—sleek and modern, with all the amenities and safety features drivers would expect. Buyers today have a wide range of choices when it comes to purchasing a hybrid vehicle, as nearly every major manufacturer offers at least one version. Some are simply hybrid versions of well-known models, like Toyota’s Camry or Avalon, the Honda Accord, the Ford Fusion, the Hyundai Sonata, or the Kia Optima. Others have dedicated models, including the Toyota Prius and the Chevrolet Volt. In addition to those makers, Audi, Cadillac, McLaren, Nissan, Lexus, Volvo, Mercedes, Infiniti, and Acura all offer hybrid vehicles. When enthusiasts think of electric cars, Tesla is often the manufacturer that comes first to mind. Dedicated to their mission of being a world leader in transitioning to sustainable energy, the company wants buyers to know that “electric vehicles can

be better, quicker, and more fun to drive than gasoline cars.” Chevrolet, Nissan, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, and Volkswagen also have electric vehicles in their consumer lineups. Over time, the overall price point for electric vehicles has lowered; as battery prices continue to drop, so will vehicle costs. New models start around $30,000, and prices are very comparable to traditional gas-powered cars. Electric vehicles (EVs) use a battery-powered motor rather than a combustion engine, making a reliable battery perhaps the most important component of the car. Most states require hybrid batteries to be warrantied for at least eight years and 80,000 miles, but manufacturers differ in their guarantees for EV batteries. Fortunately, Consumer Reports notes that they have not seen any significant issues with EV batteries in their research. As they note on their website, these batteries do require charging, and “EV manufacturers only recommend occasional quick charging, as it can potentially shorten battery life.” One of the greatest benefits of EVs is that they are energyefficient and environmentally friendly. FuelEconomy.gov says that “EVs convert about 59 percent to 62 percent of the electrical energy from the grid to power the wheels,” compared to gas-powered vehicles, which only convert about 17–21 percent. Federal tax credits are also available for many EVs, and EVs often require less

maintenance than traditional vehicles. Most EVs can be charged with either an adapter (available from the manufacturer) or a household outlet. Public charging stations are becoming more common, particularly in city centers, which is important for urban dwellers who may not have access to a home garage. Range on a fully charged battery varies widely, from less than 85 miles to more than 300, making it important to consider personal driving habits when looking at various EV models. EVs have safety features similar to those of their gas-powered counterparts (such as adaptive lighting, backup cameras, collision avoidance systems, and automatic emergency braking), and they have similar safety ratings, as well (depending on the manufacturer). Many models are geared toward families specifically, with roomy cabins, ample storage space (thanks to the absent bulky engine), LATCH attachments for child safety seats, and airbags carefully located throughout the vehicle. The hybrid and electric vehicles of today are built to appeal to even the most traditional drivers. A diverse range of vehicle types, price points, and designs means there is a green car for everyone. The Good Life

Boudoir Photography It’s Not What You Think…It’s Better!

By Connie Keck

Anticipation, excitement, creating memories—with the holidays around the corner, many women are trying to find unique gifts for a significant other. Tasteful and discreet boudoir photographs, taken by a professional photographer, can be a wonderful, exciting, and liberating experience for you...not to mention a stunning gift for your special someone. What is boudoir photography? The term “boudoir” has been used throughout history for various rooms used by women. The boudoir was regarded as a woman’s private space. It sometimes referred to a bedroom or, more specifically, to a dressing room or a sitting room within a bedroom. Boudoir photography, then, is bedroom photography—private photos taken of a woman in her private space. It is distinct from erotic photography in that its emphasis is on the aesthetic qualities of the photo subject and the craftsmanship of the photographic process rather than the sexually stimulating nature of the image. Many of us celebrate with our loved ones when we reach a milestone like a wedding, a promotion, a birthday, a new baby, an anniversary, or any significant goal. We acknowledge these events in many ways, like a special dessert, a gift, a vacation, a bottle of your favorite wine, or an evening out. This year, to commemorate and celebrate a major event in your life, or maybe just for fun, consider a personal, discreet, and private photo—a boudoir photo. Every woman deserves a portrait that reflects what others see already: her beauty, confidence, and strength. Having a boudoir portrait taken is about experiencing the transformation and feeling confident, empowered, and beautiful. Even if you’re not ready to share it with anyone else, this will be a photo that you can treasure for a lifetime. Have you gone through a certain surgery that has changed your body or maybe you’re a cancer survivor? Women in these scenarios may choose to have a boudoir session to embrace their bodies. Maybe you’ve experienced a significant weight loss and you’re ready to show yourself how far you’ve come in your journey. A boudoir photography session will help you become more in touch with your body and develop a whole new respect for your image. Boudoir photographers work with women of all ages, shapes, sizes, comfort levels, and experience levels. One of the most important factors to consider is the photographer that you select. Of course, you will need to choose a photographer who has experience in these kinds of photo sessions. A good boudoir photographer is professional and discreet as well as reassuring and supportive of your decision to engage in a photo session of this nature. Most importantly—if you want a great photo, you need to feel comfortable with your photographer. Prior to your session, you may want to engage any

60

number of services designed to enhance your experience and boost your confidence. Day spas are a great way to spruce up and pamper yourself with a facial, a manicure, or a pedicure. A makeover by a professional makeup artist may help you decide what kind of look you want for your photo shoot. And don’t forget the lingerie! Purchasing lovely and seductive lingerie items can be fun and exciting. It may be a fun shopping trip to take with a friend! Schedule your session well in advance of the date you need the photos completed. Some photographers require a non-refundable deposit to reserve your session. Be sure you’re familiar with their cancellation policy. Some studios provide a team of photographers and artists rather than an individual, which may impact your final cost. Photographers generally have several packages available for you to consider. But once you see your images, you may decide to purchase extra photos, and it’s a good idea to know ahead of time how much that will cost. When making an appointment, it’s best to review all the costs involved so you know what you can expect for the price you pay. The studio may have wardrobe choices for you, but many women feel most comfortable in their own lingerie and clothing. Popular options include a black lace bra and panty set, a garter belt and stockings, or a trendy lacy body suit. If the photos are to be gifts for your significant other, you might want to wear something you already know he likes…or perhaps he’d love to see you in a shirt from his favorite sports team. It really just depends on what you want to capture in your photos. Makeup and hairstyling are often offered as part of the overall cost of the photo session. Many studios will let you bring a friend along with you, if you’re feeling a little timid. Keep in mind that boudoir photographers, like all photographers, maintain portfolios of their work to show to potential clients. Because these images are so private and personal, you’ll want to find out beforehand how your privacy will be ensured if your photos might be used in this way. Go out of your comfort zone this holiday season and celebrate yourself with boudoir photography. Remember—sometimes it’s nice to be a little bit naughty. The 10 Best Beaches… You’ve Never Heard Of

By Jackie Williams

There’s no one beach that is perfect for everyone, I know. My husband and I have been living abroad and have met wonderful people from all over the world. Hearing their stories and opinions about their favorite beaches has inspired me to pass on their recommendations. Hopefully, you will be inspired to search them out, as well. I’ve included 10 amazing beaches (in no particular order) that you may not have heard of. See which of these fits your idea of a good time! Cook Islands: My pilot friend, Carol, has lived in the Cook Islands for years, and she recommends Muri Beach on Rarotonga for swimming and kayaking to nearby islands. “Sunrises are spectacular from this side of the island, too,” she says. Another of her favorites is on Aitutaki, which she says “would not be out of place as one of the eight wonders of the world.” Flights leave Los Angeles every week! The Cook Islands are definitely honeymoon material. Baja, Mexico: On the gulf side is a sleepy little fishing village called Los Barriles. Head up the coast to what is commonly called Coral Beach. Bring your snorkel and mask because there are plenty of fish to see. We have spearfished and brought our catch to a nearby hotel to cook it up for us. Pack a lunch, including some fresh tortillas and cajeta, and you’ll understand the experience! Trips to

Baja are family-friendly. Renting a whole house in Los Barriles or Buena Vista is easy and convenient. The area is only about an hour from Los Cabos. New Zealand: Kiwi friend Melissa has described to me how stunning and adventurous her favorite beaches are. “Cathedral Cove is not big, but you walk down a pathway on a cliff to get to it. There’s a hole in the rock on one side and a waterfall down the other end. Another beach, that can get more tourists but not busloads, is Hahei Beach. Bring a shovel at low tide and dig a hole in the sand at ‘Hot Water Beach,’ and it’s your very own hot pool.” Snorkelers and divers will love the Cathedral Cove Marine Preserve. Bali: While there are many beaches that surround this popular destination, some of them remain undiscovered by tourists. Pemuteran is a most peaceful beach that I love to visit. Beautiful ›››

mountain and volcano views behind you, calm clear waters in front—you can barely hear the water lapping the shores. Snorkel from the shore or take a boat out to dive. Last time, I brought a paddleboard and enjoyed looking below at the fish and corals. Accommodations are cheap, and the locals are friendly. Maluku Islands: This is going to be one of my next destinations. Think of it: the softest sand in the world, like powder; clear, unspoiled, flat waters. I’ve heard they want to have 30 percent of accommodations be over water once it’s developed. Maluku is a bit difficult to get to, but if you are exploring Indonesia, just tack on the extra flights. You won’t regret it! Okinawa: Some friends from the States have lived in Okinawa for the past few years. I asked Linda which beach she considered the best, and she recommends taking a ferry from Naha Tomari Port to Zamami Island. “We stayed in a pension, which provided breakfast and dinner, and we could order a box lunch to take to the islands,” she says. “We chartered a small boat to two of the surrounding so-called mujin shima (nopeople islands). The beaches and ocean were fantastic!” She recommends that you bring your own everything for this trip, including water. Western Australia: I’ve wanted to go to Ningaloo Reef since the moment I heard of it. The best time to go is March through November, when you can literally swim off the beach into the reef. It is the world’s largest fringing reef, at 260 kilometers, and there are whale sharks there! It’s nine hours from Perth or a few hours via plane to Exmouth. Take off 10–14 days to rent a caravan and go on an unforgettable road trip. There is even an itinerary to follow at westernaustralia.com. Cayman Islands: For those of you who prefer the Caribbean, my friend Joyce says her favorite beach is in Little Cayman. It’s called Point of Sand, “where the only footprints in the sand are your own. Seriously!” If you love cruising to the Caymans but want to get away from the crowds, check it out. Of course, I could go on. Since asking friends about their favorite beaches, I’ve gotten so many great recommendations! I hope these ideas will give you inspiration for a family holiday, romantic trip, or adventurous vacation. Enterprising Ideas

You’re More Than Just an Account Number Build a Relationship at Foundation One Bank

By Marge Shoemaker

Foundation One Bank was established in 2009, when Randal J. Burns, President/CEO, and a group of investors purchased Western State Bank in Waterloo, Nebraska. “Relationship banking is very important to us,” says Randal. “We want to be our customer’s partner, not just their banker.” Assistant Vice President Molly Merrell explains the simple but vital difference between a relationship bank and traditional banks. A relationship bank is based on trust, rapport, and superior service. The individual matters. “When a client calls, we don’t have an electronic menu,” says Molly. “Most of the time, the person who answers the phone can take care of whatever need exists.” One of the more unusual examples of relationship banking occurred when a couple contacted Molly for a mortgage loan to purchase a new home. An appointment had been set to close the loan, and then the wife went into early labor. Her husband phoned and said that he did not want to delay the closing, so Molly gathered the loan documents, drove to the hospital, and closed the loan as their hours-old baby girl slept nearby. The couple was happy to have a healthy baby and a new house all at the same time. Foundation One Bank fosters these kinds of relationships. They are aware that, as the Omaha metro grows and travel distances become greater, it is important for them to be conveniently located. In 2010, the bank in Waterloo was joined by a location in Omaha just north of 156th and Maple. A third location, currently operating as a loan production office at 175th and West Center Road, will transform to a full service branch upon regulatory approval. The modern banking business is filled with challenges. Molly explains that while mobile apps for phones and electronic banking capabilities create convenience, they also create risk. “One advantage of a smaller, relationship-oriented bank is its ability to identify problems related to fraud, including identity theft, more quickly than a larger institution. There are systems in place to alert the bank staff of possible unauthorized transactions,” Molly notes. The client is also able to enroll in a service that monitors debit card activity and notifies them by phone if fraud is suspected. Molly has some banking safety advice for clients, no matter where they bank. “Don’t give out your PIN, make sure you are dealing with a reputable company when making online purchases, and pay attention to statements from credit cards or other financial

entities. Watch the details,” she says. Foundation Assistant Vice President One Bank also works in partnership with local schools Molly Merrell to help kids become more financially savvy. According to Molly, classes deal with things like “creating a budget, figuring interest rates and amounts, and other consumer finance topics. Many offer real-life scenarios.” Foundation One Bank offers a joint account with a child as the primary holder and a parent as secondary. “Some kids have little sense of money…kind of an ‘entitled’ mentality that can lead to misuse of funds. We try to make kids financially aware by working with them individually,” Molly shares. She relates the time a child came in with a container of change. The teller took the time to help the child count the coins and then let him watch “One advantage of a smaller, them be counted by the coin machine. The child relationship-oriented bank then had the option of depositing the amount is its ability to identify in his account or taking problems related to fraud, it with him. “That’s only one of the ways including identity theft, we strive to establish a relationship with our more quickly than a larger clients,” Molly remarks. institution.” “It’s the personal contact!” Foundation One Bank has two full service locations: 23804 Cedar Drive, in Waterloo, (402-779-2545); 4141 North 156th Street, in Omaha (402-502-5558); and a loan production office at 17445 Arbor Street, in Omaha (531-215-0060). Lobby and drive-thru hours at the Waterloo and 156th Street locations are 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Green Thumb

Putting the Garden to Bed Just a Few Last Steps Before Winter By Sharon Knierim

If you thought that your 2017 gardening experience had come to an end, you might want to keep working just a bit longer. Bear in mind that the last chores of the season are very important to next year’s success. While you’re preparing the garden for the harsh weather forces of winter, you can also accomplish some other chores, like inspecting your plants and your soil, that will give you a bit of a head start for next spring. Remember—in the middle of winter, it seems like the cold will never end, but there are really only a limited number of weeks until we will all be outdoors in the sunshine again. For those of us who still have “bulb fever,” it is still possible to do some late planting in November. Use the same method as with earlier planting, and be sure to supply at least 10 to 12 inches of hay, leaves, or other mulching materials. Trees, evergreens, and shrubs may also be successfully planted at this time; again, be sure to mulch and water generously. Even seasoned gardeners often underappreciate the value of dried leaves, grass, and brush to be used as homemade mulch. Rake these ingredients together until the pile is light and airy. It will provide good protection for trees and shrubbery as well as for evergreens. Excellent mulching material can be collected from oak trees! Oak leaves can be 12 inches deep. Maple leaves, how-

ever, are a different story. Because maple leaves are notorious for packing themselves tightly, maple leaf mulch should be no deeper than four inches, then topped with brush, and then another four inches of mulch can be added. A light layer of peat moss or aged sawdust is a good topping for garden beds and borders. New plantings of broad-leaved evergreens and conifers also appreciate winter mulching. They are typically still vulnerable, and keeping them protected from “winter burn” damage is essential. What is winter burn? This is a natural type of damage, occurring when drying occurs as roots become imprisoned in hard and frozen soil. These roots are unable to replace their lost moisture through their foliage when visited by periods of warmer winter weather.

Remember: When mulching to provide winter protection, DO NOT pack down the mulch. This will cut off the much-needed air supply to root systems and cause damage to them. During winter months, water should be offered to perennials, trees, and shrubs if snow or rain has not fallen on them. Remember that these plants are thirsty, even in the cold weather! Don’t let more than two or three weeks pass without providing them with water that Mother Nature has not given them. Many mulches provide protection from the impact of nature’s deep freeze; at least a portion of the existing root system will maintain access to moisture. Additionally, soil surface temperature fluctuations will be greatly reduced by the presence of mulch. The reward for this is the elimination of soil heaving. Nothing is as heartrending as finding perennials that have heaved during harsh winter weather. Spending some time now will prevent this problem. Doing so should lead to healthy and undamaged perennials next season. While you’re in the garden, preparing flower beds and borders for mulch’s protection, be sure to remove dead annuals. Leaving them in the ground can provide food and shelter for insects and pests. You should remove any weeds that insist on thriving right up until the first hard freeze. This is also the time to remove perennials’ tops. Cut close to the ground to avoid nests for insect pests. Insects and other pests are phenomenal opportunists; eliminating any chances for them to overwinter in your garden is doing yourself and your plants a huge favor. They are all seeking winter quarters, so make sure to give no quarter in your yard! Again, taking time for this chore will aid in next season’s gardening success. Although it may seem odd to consider issues of drainage during the coldest of winter’s weather, this is an important factor in gardening. Do not allow plants to sit in pools of standing water; they will drown. As we move through November and into December, maybe we can all think of sitting down and resting for a short time, taking a small break from the hard work of gardening. Well, maybe not! Pet Grooming All You Need to Know By Kathy Glow

Good grooming is about more than just having a pretty pet. Caring for your pet’s outer appearance can help ensure that its insides are healthy, too. The best grooming is a combination of things to do with your pet at home and regular sessions with a professional groomer. The first step to good grooming involves brushing your dog or cat regularly at home, even if it has short fur. While hair balls are not usually a problem for dogs, they can cause intestinal upset in cats. When brushing your pet, check for unusual lumps or bumps on the skin. One of the first signs of illness in your pet can be a change in its coat or skin. Check your pet’s ears and eyes for any signs of infection or redness. Experts also recommend brushing your pet’s teeth at least once or twice a week, if not every day. Active cats and dogs who spend time outdoors will wear down their claws naturally by scratching and digging. However, indoor cats and dogs will need them trimmed occasionally. Some pet owners opt to trim their pet’s claws themselves, though this can be a tricky job. Be careful to trim only a little bit at a time to avoid cutting them to the quick and drawing blood. Declawing cats is a controversial practice. It involves removing not only the claw but also the little piece of bone from which the claw grows. In this procedure, the pad is also affected, causing the cat pain for several weeks. In cosmetic declawing, a tiny curved blade is used to dissect out the claw and the piece of bone. While it is an option, not many veterinarians do it, since it is not medically necessary. Declawing may be recommended when the owners would otherwise give up the cat due to destructive behavior or if the owner is immunocompromised and must avoid scratches. When it comes to the more involved stages of grooming, visiting a professional groomer will save you time and energy. Large pets, young pets, those with thick or curly coats, or pets who are resistant to handling all benefit from being groomed by a professional. The frequency with which you choose to have your pet groomed depends on a number of factors: time spent outdoors, season of the year, and length of the coat, to name a few. Most groomers recommend grooming your pet about once a month. You will need to make an appointment for grooming. Pet stores, veterinary offices, pet spas, and private groomers are all good places to take your pet. Ask friends and your veterinarian for recommendations. Be sure to clearly communicate your requests and concerns to the groomer. It might help to bring a picture of how you would like your pet to look. Many groomers require vaccination records and will most likely ask questions such as whether your pet is pregnant or nursing, takes any medications, is being treated for ticks or fleas, or has any behavioral concerns.

You can ask questions, too, about their procedures, what products they use, and the level of experience your groomer has. You can get a feel for the facility by looking at the overall cleanliness and the rapport the staff has with your pet and the other pets in their care. The groomer will get to know your dog or cat by petting it and talking to it—developing a bond. The groomer will then comb or brush out mats before bathing your pet. Be aware that sometimes she will have to cut out mats that cannot be brushed out. Then she will bathe and dry your pet. You might have the opportunity to choose extras, such as a sweetsmelling shampoo, paw balm, or special powders. The groomer will also check your pet’s ears for signs of infection and will remove excess buildup. Once dry, your pet’s coat will be trimmed, clipped, or shaved. Groomers generally trim the hair around the ears, eyes, and mouth and on the bottoms of the feet. They will trim the nails to a comfortable length. Some groomers offer nail grinding, which involves a special tool that smooths the tip of the nails in order to reduce scratching. Finally, the groomer will style your pet any way you desire. If you want bows or frills, ask and you shall receive. Another advantage of taking your pet to a professional groomer is that she can take care of the yucky stuff—anal glands, skunk spray, and removal of fleas and ticks, to name a few. Between professional grooming sessions, you can help keep your pet in tip-top shape by giving it a good brushing at least once a week, since a buildup of mats can be uncomfortable for your pet. Positive Perspective

Are You Having Any Fun? Maybe It’s Time “Over-seriousness is a warning sign for mediocrity and bureaucratic thinking. People who are seriously committed to mastery and high performance are secure enough to lighten up.” —Michael J. Gelb So, has seriousness taken over all of us? Has our feeling tone become one of responsibility, intensity, and earnestness? Whatever happened to gaiety, lightness, joy, and fun? “Mix a little foolishness with your serious plans: it’s lovely to be silly at the right moment.” —Horace (Roman Poet) If this guy from Rome got it, what’s happened to the rest of us in the twenty-first century? I don’t know what it is about “maturing,” but all of a sudden, before we know what has happened, we’re married, we have house payments, and, more often than not, we have children who fill up that house. We go from carefree kids, adolescents, and young adults to mature, responsible, tax-paying citizens. Is this a good thing? Not if we’re grim. “A man’s maturity: that is to have rediscovered the seriousness he possessed as a child at play.” —Friedrich Nietzsche When we are born, we knew that our “job” going forth was

to seek our joy…to follow our bliss. You can tell that by simply observing a baby or toddler. They are so excited by life! The question that most often comes out of my mouth is, “So, are you having any fun?” If you consistently answer “no” to this question, then you know you’re on the road to dullness! “Dullness is the coming of age of seriousness.” —Oscar Wilde Dullness and seriousness is a feeling tone that many of us have assumed is the adult way to behave. We have followed the perceived rule that we are supposed to be serious as we go through our lives. We find ourselves in the middle of our lives, having followed all the rules—only to arrive at a point of total, complete dullness. “If you obey all of the rules, you miss all of the fun.” —Katherine Hepburn So, maybe it’s time to break those rules—those beliefs—that we have superimposed upon our lives. Maybe it’s time to have some fun! “The average person living to age 70 has 613,620 hours of life. This is too long a period not to have fun.” —Author Unknown
