The Universe Has My Back As I write this column, it is January 9, 2018. I am incredibly optimistic about the coming 12 months...more so than I have been in a very, very long time. The last time I had this incredibly optimistic “feeling tone” was January 2, 1995. I was trying to emerge from five years of what felt like hell. My husband, Jim, was in the ICU, with a prognosis of three months to live if he didn’t receive a heart transplant. The past half-decade had brought the birth of my son—GREAT NEWS!— but then the passing of my father-in-law, the passing of my father, and, after a long struggle, the passing of my mother. How could I be so optimistic on that day? I just FELT it. I walked into Jim’s ICU room and said, “This is going to be a GREAT YEAR!” You know what? It was. The next 12+ years were off-thecharts phenomenal. Jim received his heart on March 6, 1995. The doctor told me we would have “10 years, tops” before Jim would die of heart failure or cancer. We got almost 14 years. (He passed quickly of cancer in 2008.) The great thing about being “mature” is that you gain hindsight. This is something we don’t have in our 20s, 30s, 40s…sometimes, not even in our 50s. Life can be an incredible challenge, as we all know. I believe that when we feel as if we have WAY TOO MUCH on our plates, something eventually gives. When we are in the thick of things, and it feels as if we can’t do it anymore, we get our second wind. Then, the Universe delivers what we have been asking for, for so very long. A dear friend of mine, Kelly Steiger, who is my massage therapist, shared with me a wonderful affirmation a couple of months ago that I have taken to heart: The Universe has my back. Hmm. For a control freak like myself, I found this quite comforting! I know that I have tried to “control” my life for some time now. What that affirmation taught me was that maybe the Universe has a better plan than what I would come up with. Now, I’m not saying that the last couple of months have been wonderful. What I know is that it’s coming. Like I said, I feel it! I sincerely hope that each and every one of you has an off-the-charts phenomenal 2018. I feel it’s going to be a GREAT YEAR for all of us! Let’s go do it! Let’s have some joy this year!

Love Is in the Air Bridal Inspirations for 2018 By Holly Bell
Since Valentine’s Day is a very popular and romantic time to get engaged, it’s a fun time to look ahead to the latest in bridal inspirations for 2018. The biggest news in bridal trends this year is going to be the plunging neckline. Brides, get ready for the sexy look you’ve been seeing on celebrities at award shows this past year—virtually every designer is featuring plunging necklines in their collections. If you go for the plunging style, be sure to secure it with tape made especially to hold the neckline in place! Many styles have built-in security but maintain the deep V-neck look by using a sheer piece of illusion netting to discreetly cover the bare space. Ready-to-wear trends for the past year have featured shoulder-baring looks along with cold shoulder cutouts. Bridal fashions in 2018 will reflect this in feminine shoulder-baring and off-the-shoulder styles. This is a flattering look for brides of any age or size, and it’s a great, modern alternative to a plunging neckline. Details are important this year, as designers have fun with bows of all sizes, in all places! A show-stopping dress by Carolina Herrera featured a huge chiffon bow at the lower back. This is a glorious place to put a statement bow, since your guests will spend most of the ceremony viewing your backside! Bows were also shown side-tied, as a belted look. Of course, all the bows were oversized, making a real focal point. Halter dresses were particularly pretty with the neckline tied in an enormous bow at the back of the neck. If you have a huge bow as a focus, remember to keep the rest of the gown simple and elegant. Also gorgeous this year is fabric detailing, with lots of hand-cut lace and floral embroideries. Of course, the classic bead-and-rhinestone–encrusted bodice is always a bridal favorite. Color is in the news for brides, too, with rose petal pink and serenity blue being the standouts. It seems as if the color trend in bridal gowns is here to stay. Designers are taking artistic license in adding color to the classic white or cream gown as an accent. Some gowns feature a simple colored ribbon tied around the waistline. A particularly spectacular gown by Marchesa featured a blush-and-ivory ombre tiered skirt. Skirting trends on bridal gowns are looking fresh in 2018. The mermaid skirt has been the most popular for years—brides have loved it for the curvy silhouette that the mermaid cut gives everyone. This year, however, the new skirt trends are draped over the body more subtly, with a flattering flow. For the bride who loves feeling like a princess, there are still layered tulle styles and cascading, full-skirted gowns that gently taper out from the waistline, creating the look of a tiny waist. If you really dare to be different, pants can be a viable bridal alternative! Most every bridal collection included a pantsuit or jumpsuit, making us think this may be an up and coming trend. Another ultra-chic and different trend was the capes. Channel your inner Snow White with a hooded lace cape for an original take on your wedding day. Bolero capes were shown topping off strapless gowns, adding a demure facet to a strapless ensemble. Even moto jackets made of leather

or lace can work for the truly modern bride. Here’s a new take on the off-the-shoulder trend: detachable sleeves! Basically, the dress is a strapless gown but with added sleeves that you can take off at the reception. Now, that’s some bold versatility! Bridal designers are offering a lot of variety in hemlines this year. Midlength gowns are a great alternative to the usual floor-length gown. It’s a retro trend with a decidedly Audrey Hepburn feel. This length is great for showing off your fabulous shoes! Keep in mind that the most flattering part of your leg is where it is slimmest. The dress needs to fall a little below the fullest part of the calf. Another uncommon hemline is the tiered skirt that is shorter in the front and longer in the back. The best of both worlds! Designers are even showing mini-skirts, worn with long, flowing veils down the back. This might be the hemline for you, if you really want to make a statement and you are fortunate enough to have great legs. There really is a hemline to suit every bride this year! Wedding ceremonies are about hope, love, and the bride and groom. They offer us a reminder that love never goes out of style! Whether or not you’re in the market for a bridal gown in 2018, let’s wish for all the love that February has to offer. Put a bunch of trimmed and cut-up asparagus (fresh or frozen) in the dish, and pour a bit of olive oil over everything. Bake at 450 degrees for 15–20 minutes. Warm or fry some corn or flour tortillas. Assemble the fish tacos with additional condiments, as desired. Broiled Tuna Melts Make a tuna salad mixture by mixing a can of tuna (packed in oil or water) with 2–3 Tablespoons of mayonnaise, 2 diced scallions, one-fourth teaspoon of dried thyme, and salt and pepper to taste. Add some diced red or green pepper to your taste, 1 stalk of diced celery, and a splash of fresh lemon juice. Keep taste-testing and adjusting amounts. Throw in a few capers or chopped tomatoes, if you have them. Butter 4–8 pieces of ciabatta or French or Italian bread. Spread the tuna salad on the bread. Top with a slice or two of soft cheese like Muenster, Swiss, Asiago—whatever you like. Put the slices on a cookie sheet and broil for a minute or two. Watch them carefully to make sure they don’t burn. (For chicken melts, substitute chicken for the tuna.) Hot Beef Sandwiches (Great for a Super Bowl crowd!) Rub a light coating of flour over a 2–3-pound roast and sear all sides in a hot skillet with a teaspoon of oil. Place the meat in a slow cooker. Add 1 cut-up onion and 2 cloves of garlic, along with salt and pepper. Add 1 can of beef broth and 1 envelope of dry onion soup. Cook on low for 6–8 hours. Remove the meat to a platter. Pour the juices into a saucepan, skim off the fat, and heat for 10–15 minutes to reduce. Slice the meat into sandwich portions. Serve on toasted rolls, with juice on the side. Cheese is optional. White Chicken Chili Heat 2 Tablespoons of oil in a soup pot. Add 1 small diced onion, 1 chopped carrot, and 1 stalk of chopped celery. Sauté for 3–4 minutes. Add 4 cups of cooked chicken (use a rotisserie chicken

as a shortcut), 4 cups of chicken broth, 3 cans of cannellini beans, and 1 can of Ro-Tel tomatoes. Stir well. Add 1 teaspoon of cumin. Add salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for an hour. Quick Skillet Tilapia Heat 3 Tablespoons of olive oil and 3 Tablespoons of butter in a large skillet. Stir in 2 teaspoons of Old Bay or Cajun seasoning, 1 teaspoon of dried basil, and 3 cloves of sliced garlic. Add the tilapia and cook each side until golden (take care—tilapia cooks quickly!). Salt and pepper to taste. Squeeze the juice from half a lemon over the top and baste with the pan juices. Serve with rice. German Chocolate Brownies Gently melt 1 stick of butter and 1 chopped 4-ounce bar of sweet cooking chocolate (sometimes called German chocolate). Let cool. Add one-half cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, and 2 eggs, and beat well. Add 1 cup of flour mixed with one-half teaspoon of baking powder and one-fourth teaspoon of salt. Spread in a greased 9-inch baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 18–20 minutes. Mix 2 Tablespoons of butter with one-half cup of brown sugar, 2 Tablespoons of light corn syrup, and 2 Tablespoons of milk. Blend well. Mix in 1 cup of shredded coconut and one-half cup of chopped pecans. Drop by teaspoons over the warm brownies and spread gently. Broil 4 inches from heat for about a minute, watching carefully. Cool and cut. Editor’s Note: Kate has been an Omaha area culinary instructor since 1997. She attended The Institute for the Culinary Arts at Metropolitan Community College in Omaha. WE

SuperSlow Zone The Ultimate Exercise Protocol By Robyn V Powell
Most of us understand the important role that fitness plays in our overall health and well-being, but many of us struggle to find time to exercise. If you want a safe, quick, and efficient fitness protocol, you should check out SuperSlow Zone. This total body workout produces maximum results in as little as one or two 20-minute workouts per week and enables you to exercise in your street clothes. You can get in, get out, and get on with your day! Julie Beard, the owner of SuperSlow Zone in Omaha, explains the methodology. “Slowness and strength go together,” she says. “Teaching people proper form and breathing minimizes tension and develops mindfulness, resulting in focused and controlled exercise that is very efficient. We’ve been conditioned to think just the opposite—to do as many repetitions as possible in a short time. That leads people to overdo it and results in injuries.” Simply put, says Julie, SuperSlow Zone is personalized strength training. “By safely building muscle and increasing the resting metabolism rate, the body burns more calories, even while at rest. People attain physical fitness without injury. They will feel strength returning and typically achieve a loss of several inches to their wasteline and other parts of their body within 3 to 6 months.” Other benefits include improved cardiovascular fitness and overall health, greater muscle strength, and increased fat loss while maintaining muscle. Participants exercise on Nautilus medical-grade equipment in a distraction-free, climate-controlled environment. They are supervised by instructors who are trained and accredited by the same organization that certifies physical therapists: the International Association for Continuing Education and Training. “Safety and efficiency is our number-one concern,” Julie stresses. Since SuperSlow Zone opened in Omaha five years ago, membership has steadily grown. Clients come in all shapes and sizes and range from age 16 to 90. Membership is month-to-month, and the initial consultation involves a sample workout. Workouts are designed to be progressive and challenging in order for you to continue to get stronger and more fit over time and are scheduled in advance. You are always with an instructor for every workout, so it is like having a personal trainer for half the cost. “It’s amazing to watch people transition to where they feel more confident in themselves,” says Julie. Strength training and overall strengthening of the body is as beneficial to athletes as it is to people doing everyday activities. “We lose muscle as we age, but we can get it back. You can be strong at any age if you work the muscles. Our focus is on building and adding muscle that benefits our bones and increases endurance and overall vitality.

Our upper and lower body workout is high in intensity but low in impact, which protects joints and connective tissues.” Deb is an active mother, grandmother, and business person. At age 62, she was looking for safe, affordable physical training that would fit into her busy schedule. “Twenty minutes twice a week was a perfect fit for me,” she shares. “Within a couple of months, I noticed that picking up my grandchildren was so much easier. We’ve been remodeling a farmhouse and, when I’m tearing out walls and hauling construction debris, I smile at my husband and say, ‘Aren’t you glad I go to SuperSlow Zone?’” Ron, an active business owner who rides bicycles all over the world, has been a client of SuperSlow Zone for two years. “I have tried gyms, in-home workouts, and personal trainers, only to find myself losing interest and dropping out,” he says. “The staff at SuperSlow Zone makes the training fun. The convenience of getting in and out in a short time is important, with my busy schedule. I feel and look stronger and more fit than I have been in years!” Owning and managing SuperSlow Zone has been a great experience for Julie. After a career in marketing, Julie says, “I was looking for something I could take into retirement and beyond. With a corporate background and as a former business owner, I enjoyed being an entrepreneur and having a say in my future.” Julie’s lifelong passion for good health led to a meeting with the SuperSlow Zone founder in Florida, convincing her it was the right move. As an active grandmother of four, Julie is clearly living by her personal motto of “being the best you can be at every age of your life.” Julie says, “The people I see who continue to have vibrant lifestyles are the ones who remain active all their lives. You have to be in tune with your body, and I truly believe that proper exercise improves longevity and quality of life. Something that is only going to take 20 minutes and fits everyone’s lifestyle becomes very doable and affordable when you begin to look at the costs of not being healthy.” I think we would all agree with that! Whatever your life goals are, you are inclined to make them materialize! The influences you will receive from Sun and Mercury will enhance your personal charm. This could help you develop new friendships and strengthen current relationships. Pisces (Feb 19–Mar 20) Spirituality will play an important role this month. It will be a key component in various aspects of your life, such as finances, relationships, and health. Aries (Mar 21–April 19) You will notice progress in all aspects of your life. Career is bright due to your determination to succeed. Expand your social connections through mingling. Single Rams should prepare for love at first sight! A Woman’s Work
Love Story How Does Love Last?
By Sharon Knierim
Everybody seems to have their own love story, though perhaps nobody is quite as interested in our love stories as we ourselves are. Love can carry us through both hard times and good times as we navigate through our lives. Love is precious, and love is kind, if we allow it to be so. Love is not a tangible thing. We try to examine it frequently and wonder what it is. How does it bind us together so strongly? Is it no more than a chemical or physical reaction to another person? Most of us do not think so. What very often begins as a simple attraction will, if given time and care, blossom into a sustaining force that unites us. It is an undeniable force that bonds us together, grows and changes over time, and can turn into a sustaining partnership. Sometimes, we’re not even sure why we love the people we love. There are, of course, many kinds of human love. A mother’s love for her child, for example, is a tough bond to break. Once that connection is made, it is pretty permanent for most motherand-child duos. Sometimes, it may seem that our mothers do not love or even like us very much when they scold or correct our behavior, but we all know that it is for “our own good” (or, at least, that’s what we’re repeatedly told). Very often it takes becoming a

mother to recognize that this is true. Children of the world: Do not doubt your mother…she is always right, and you will turn into her someday, so listen up! For many people, loving the god they worship is the foundation of their being. It is the flame in our hearts that keeps us going when our path is unclear or when we are unsure of ourselves and, perhaps, unsure of those around us. We love our country because that, too, is part of our lives and helps define who we are. Because we are human, most of us are interested in romantic love. This is often the fun kind of love. someone is exciting! At the same time, it gives us the opportunity to learn more about ourselves as we explore a new relationship and discover how love grows and fits into our lives. There cannot possibly be anyone on this planet who does not remember meeting his or her spouse for the first time. Now, there may well be more than one version of this meeting—one sweetheart sees it one way, while the other one remembers the event totally differently. Upon meeting my future husband for the first time, I had the feeling that this would be the man I would marry, even though courtship and marriage were the last things on my mind in those days. Enjoying being a single young woman had so much appeal to this former farm girl turned career woman, college student, athlete, and fun seeker. Why would I want to have a steady boyfriend, much less a husband? Still, in the back of my mind and probably my heart, too, this boy did make an impression on me. When he finally broke up with the girl he had been seeing, he did ask me out on a date. For our first date, he stood me up! For our second date, he brought along his best friend. Not a promising start. After those two dates, I decided that I couldn’t stand him. Of course, that all changed by the third, fourth, and fifth dates. My would-be husband finally proposed marriage to me while I was in the hospital, shrouded by an oxygen tent. This girl was not feeling romantic at the time. He was persistent, though, and waited until I had recovered from pneumonia. I am glad he was persistent. Finally, after trying all kinds of approaches to the marriage question, he produced something of a flowchart exhibiting the financial benefits of marriage. Oddly, that’s what won me over. The rest is history. Why do we fall in love, and how do we keep that love strong? Maybe it’s the constant discovery about that other person that is so fascinating. What often begins as passion grows into companionship and understanding, a sense of belonging. How does it happen that some of us grow in our love for each other? Maybe it’s luck. Nobody knows for sure, but why bring into question something that works so well? Do you have a love story close to your heart? If so, share it with someone else. The love you send forth will come back to you multiplied. WE

Vantage Point
Roeder Mortuary Honoring Our Loved Ones for Over 100 Years By Elizabeth French
Brian Roeder is the fourth generation of his family to work at Roeder Mortuary. His compassionate nature shows in the way he expresses his business philosophy and willingness to go above and beyond for each and every client. During funeral planning, Brian says, “people are grieving. Anything we can take off their plate helps them, so that is my philosophy—trying to relieve some of that pressure on the family by taking care of things on our end.” The notion of taking his career path into the family business had to be a personal decision for Brian. Before following in his father’s footsteps, he sought structure in the Navy, which instilled a sense of discipline and leadership into his daily routine. For six years, he dedicated his life to the craft of serving others and learning how to “adapt, overcome, and improvise.” Brian’s decision to return to Roeder Mortuary was a gradual process. “The military is very tradition-driven, and the more I thought of that, the more I thought about my own tradition and my family,” he recalls. “My thoughts kept returning home, to helping my dad and helping families.” Today, Brian is the funeral director at Roeder Mortuary, and he works with his father, Jon, the owner. Roeder Mortuary offers a variety of services to help their clients memorialize and celebrate their loved ones. Lately, they have seen a trend toward more personalized or location-based events. Regardless of your preference, Brian notes, they will help you make it happen. “If you find comfort in tradition and ritual, then let’s do that,” Brian says. “If not, what do you want to do? What can you dream up, and what can we make a reality for you?” At Roeder Mortuary, they want to make the service meaningful to you, whatever it takes. They have also seen growth in pre-arranged funerals. Although death is a topic no one wants to talk about, Brian advises all of us to talk to our family members about their final wishes. Making these decisions long before they become a reality can alleviate a lot of the decision-making during a time of great emotional stress. If you do decide to pre-plan, be sure to let your loved ones know you have done so! If the relevant relative does not know, there is no way to find out. “This is the crucial step that nobody wants to talk about,” Brian emphasizes. “I am almost certain that there are families out there that never knew things were already taken care of. We have people walk in that have prefunded funerals, and the family has no idea.” The motto at Roeder Mortuary is “our family
18
February 2018
helping yours,” and Brian’s goal is to make sure that everyone who walks in really feels that. During the difficult time of planning a funeral, Brian’s viewpoint is that “we become part of your family. Does that mean we will help your Aunt Joan get a flight from Arizona and a local hotel room? Yes. Does that mean going through your loved one’s life and trying to honor her in the best way possible? Yes.” Roeder Mortuary is more than just a business providing a service, he shares. “We become a small part of the family, which is the way I like it.” With on-call hours, work behind the scenes, and mediating between family members, being a funeral director can be draining. Brian has embraced event planning and all the details that come with it. Sometimes, he must seem like a workaholic. However, he finds it greatly rewarding to help families work through such a difficult time, and he wouldn’t have it any other way. Brian especially enjoys coordinating military funerals because of his history in the service and the additional pomp and circumstance they entail. He described one memorial that had to take place at a high school because it was the only location large enough to accommodate all the attendees! Overall, death is not a pleasant subject to talk about. However, Brian and the Roeder family make the concept of planning a funeral much less daunting than you might think. “I’ve never been a good salesman, so I try not to be. I’m more about education,” Brian concludes. “I want to provide families with the options and explain how they are different. I help them make an educated decision about what they want, and I do not want them to go into debt doing it.” With multiple generations returning as clients and employees, they are clearly a family firm that deals in honesty and compassion. Fresh Concept
Serious Surgical Solutions The Latest Procedures From the Neck Down By Kylie Gumpert
When it comes to taking the plunge and deciding to get plastic surgery, are you worried that you won’t be pleased with the results? That you’ll regret your decision? No question about it—these are exactly the sorts of questions you should be asking yourself. As any reputable plastic surgeon will tell you, surgery is a big deal, and it should be taken very seriously. However, a frank conversation with a trusted surgeon will go a long way toward getting your questions answered and your fears eased. If your surgeon agrees that making a surgical change will help you be more comfortable in your skin and in your everyday life, then it’s worth considering. Before you talk to your surgeon, you need some idea of what you might want to have done. What are the popular procedures today in the field of bodily cosmetic surgery? Since 2000, the two most popular non-facial plastic surgeries have been breast augmentation and liposuction. Breast augmentation is used to increase breast size and fullness and to achieve balance. The procedure is often done in combination with a breast lift, to restore shape and a more youthful breast position. Breast lifts have grown increasingly popular and are also performed in combination with breast reductions. In cases where a woman has had a mastectomy or lumpectomy, breast reconstruction surgery can help rebuild breast shape, size, and symmetry, restoring the patient’s confidence. In many augmentations, implants are inserted alongside breast tissue. Sometimes, fat from other parts of the body is transferred to the breasts to increase size or improve shape. Implants may be filled with silicone, which is a viscous gel, or saline, which is liquid. “Gummy bear” implants are made from a thicker silicone gel that is shaped—if these implants rotate for some reason, an additional procedure may be required to correct their positioning. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 86 percent of augmentation patients opt for silicone implants, most likely because silicone implants feel more like natural breast tissue and are less likely to leak. Excessively large breasts can be extremely uncomfortable, both physically and socially. An excessively large chest may inhibit movement, impact a woman’s ability to exercise, and cause back pain or skin rashes. Breast reduction surgery can provide muchneeded relief from these symptoms. Procedures may involve surgically removing fatty tissue and excess skin, sometimes in combination with liposuction. In some cases, liposuction alone can sufficiently reduce breast size. (One important note: Most cosmetic surgical procedures are not covered by insurance. Breast reduction, on the other hand, may be covered if you can demonstrate that the excess weight of your breasts is causing physical trauma that the surgery would relieve. Talk to your surgeon.) Liposuction is used to reduce fat or improve proportion

on many areas of the body. It is not a cure for obesity, it cannot replace the visible benefits of proper diet and exercise, and it is not effective on cellulite. However, it is extremely effective at permanently and immediately removing stubborn fat deposits. It can be used in combination with other surgeries and is performed on many different parts of the body, including the thighs, hips, upper arms, calves, ankles, and inner knee. To perform liposuction, the surgeon makes a small incision and then inserts a small tube with a surgical vacuum attached to it. Fat is loosened by moving the tube back and forth. The fat is then suctioned out of the body by the vacuum. Considerable bruising can be expected, but the results are undeniable. Liposuction is often used to reduce fat during a tummy tuck procedure, in which excess abdominal fat and skin are removed and the underlying muscle is rejuvenated or repaired to create a smoother, slimmer stomach. Less invasive fat reduction procedures don’t offer the dramatic results of liposuction, but they are less expensive and are easier to recover from. CoolSculpting, for example, features a cooling mechanism that freezes fat cells, killing them so that the body can gradually flush them out. Another method, called truSculpt, uses radio-frequency waves to achieve the same result. Sessions for these noninvasive procedures usually last around an hour, and they may require more than one visit. Final results can been seen over the course of a few weeks to a few months (compared to the immediate results of liposuction). Buttock augmentation, labiaplasty, and the lower body lift are not the most common cosmetic body procedures, but they are growing in popularity. A buttock augmentation is done to modify the size and shape of a woman’s backside. As with breast augmentation, this surgery may involve inserting silicone implants. Some patients choose what is commonly known as a Brazilian
www.womensedition.com
butt lift. This procedure, technically called buttock augmentation with fat grafting, involves taking unwanted fat from a different part of the body and injecting it into the buttocks. With the labiaplasty procedure, the size and shape of the labia are surgically adjusted. This procedure will reduce what can be painful or uncomfortable tugging or pulling in this delicate area. Significant weight loss, dramatic fluctuations in weight, or simply the change in skin elasticity caused by the aging process can all result in sagging skin below the belt. A lower body lift is done to improve the appearance of sagging skin on a patient’s abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. Skin and fat will be removed to improve skin appearance and elasticity, most commonly by making an incision around the entire waist and removing a band of tissue. This procedure is also known as belt lipectomy. With almost all of these procedures, it’s difficult to know what the results will look like on your body until everything’s all said and done. That can feel like a big risk—and it should! Fortunately, technology is solving this problem. Helpful 3D imaging simulations can give you an accurate idea of what the results of your procedure will look like on your body. The Vectra 3D imaging system, for example, is commonly used to capture photos of a patient’s face or breasts and then create 3D images that can be viewed from all angles. The system can be used to capture images of other parts of the body, as well, to create renderings for other procedures. Your surgeon can use these images to explain the limitations of various procedures and offer other surgical options that might work better for you. Of course, it’s vital to choose a surgeon who is certified, who is experienced in performing the procedures you want to have done, and who you trust. If you know people who have undergone
the procedure you’re considering, ask them about their surgeons. Your regular doctor may also be able to recommend someone. If you’re starting from scratch, you can search for surgeons in your area on the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery’s website (AmericanBoardCosmeticSurgery.com). When you’re comfortable with your surgeon, it’s easier to be comfortable with your surgery. Taking advantage of 3D imaging is also a great way to feel confident about your surgical decisions and the expected results. However, something that not everyone considers is the psychological and emotional impact of undergoing cosmetic surgery. Even the most confident of patients may feel nervous before going “under the knife.” In the days immediately following the procedure, you may have feelings of doubt, worry, or regret. For a couple of months after your surgery, you may feel like you’ve made a mistake or worry that you just don’t look like yourself, according to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. These feelings are very common. Don’t forget to give yourself a break—remember, you’ve just had surgery, and your body needs time to recover! Once your body has had several months to heal and you’ve had time to adjust to your new features, you (like the majority of patients) will likely be very happy with the results. It’s perfectly normal to be worried about making the decision to pursue plastic surgery—in fact, it’s a good sign that you’re taking the issue seriously. There’s no need to spend every day feeling uncomfortable in your own skin. There are so many resources today to address the physical features that you feel are holding you back. Start your journey today to see if cosmetic bodily surgery is something that can help you live your life to the fullest! Gentle Family Dentistry Great Dentists for Every Family
By Marge Shoemaker
Have you ever felt elated when you left your dentist’s office? Frankly, most of us have not. However, according to the receptionists at the Benson dental office of Dr. Richard Fitzgerald and Dr. Thomas Swartz, a client recently emerged from her appointment, rubbed her cheek, smiled, and declared, “That was the best root canal I’ve ever had!” That positive feeling carries over to the staff, including Shameika, Amanda, Brenda, four dental assistants, and Barb (who recently retired after more than 30 years, was gone for a year, and then came back “to help out.”) Amanda has been with the office for over two decades. Brenda has been there nearly as long. An office with employees who stay that long must certainly be a great place to work! Dr. Richard Fitzgerald is a graduate of Creighton University School of Dentistry. Upon graduation, he entered the Army, where he served his residency. “Dr. Charlie Meyer taught me that the patient has to come first,” reports Dr. Fitzgerald. When he returned to Omaha to practice general dentistry in the 1970s, he

joined the practice of Drs. Thomas Swartz and Dr. Gustafson, who was an “old-time family dentist” Richard Fitzgerald in Benson. When Dr. Gustafson retired, Dr. Fitzgerald took over. He’s been active in the Nebraska Dental Association in various capacities over the years since. Dr. Thomas Swartz also attended Creighton University. He honed his dentistry knowledge and skills in Kansas and Wyoming. Ultimately, he returned to Omaha, where he joined one of the larger dental offices. As time went on, he decided that he would prefer a smaller, more personal office. Growing up, he’d been a patient of Dr. Fitzgerald’s. When the opportunity to work in what he knew to be a “small, family-oriented office” arose, he knew he’d found the job he always
www.womensedition.com
wanted. Dr. Swartz is thrilled to say, “I enjoy going to work every single day!” He describes the office climate as positive and friendly. Brenda knows of several families who have tried other dentists for one reason or another but end up back at Gentle Family Dentistry. Many patients have grown up coming to Dr. Fitzgerald and now bring their children in…even if they have moved from the neighborhood. Julie Fitzgerald Ryan (Dr. Fitzgerald’s daughter, who worked in the office while she was in high school) tells of Ann, who had been a patient when growing up and then left Omaha for a period of time. On her return, she began bringing her children to Dr. Fitzgerald’s office. She remembered how comfortable she’d been there as a patient. Other happily satisfied patients make similar claims. Sharon says she wouldn’t go anywhere else…they’re the best there is! Chad claims that this is the first dentist he’s been to who never judges or scolds. Grace appreciates that “they are nice and really care.” One client, who wishes to remain anonymous, says, “These doctors are the nicest dentists in Omaha!” Dr. Fitzgerald and Dr. Swartz both focus on the well-being of their patients. As dentists, they are devoted to improving their patients’ lives and overall health through improved dental health. They work closely with patients to help them make the choices that will leave them looking and feeling better. Their practice stresses affordability, value, and quality care. In addition to
general dentistry services, such as teeth cleaning and whitening, the Benson dental office does minor surgeries and extractions, night guards, and cosmetic and aesthetic dentistry. For before and after pictures of satisfied customers and their bright new smiles, check out the gallery at drfitzgeralddds.com. “Even if your mouth is a mess because you weren’t taught to do a good job,” Dr. Fitzgerald reminds us, “if the damage is preventable, it is reversible.” Dr. Swartz encourages everyone to have an “open, trustworthy relationship with your dentist...to know what is going on.” Both dentists are known to be available to their patients beyond regular office hours. Of course, they encourage us to brush, floss, and get regular dental checkups! They want all their patients to feel good about how their teeth look and feel, and they strive to have every patient leave with a more beautiful smile. If cost is deterring you from getting the dental care you want or need, call Gentle Family Dentistry and ask about insurance coverage or a payment plan. They are happy to help. The Gentle Family Dentistry office is located at 5709 NW Radial Highway, in Omaha. Call 402-551-1757 for an appointment. For more information, find them online at drfitzgeralddds.com. Hours vary daily during the week: Monday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Tuesday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Wednesday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; and Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. They are generally closed on weekends. Totally Vein
The Family Firm for Everything Vein By Elizabeth French
With over 25 years of experience in his field, Dr. Stephen Torpy treats patients of all ages at his busy private practice, Totally Vein. This thriving practice evolved 12 years ago from Dr. Torpy’s surgical experience; after attending UNMC and spending his residency in Milwaukee, his interest gravitated toward arteries and veins. “I found that the patients were so happy and just loved it,” he says. “There were so many people that needed it, that it just evolved into a specialty.” Now, he performs up to seven surgeries a day, reserving his afternoons for patient consultations. Dr. Torpy partners with his wife, Jackie, and a team of five professionals to satisfy each patient who comes through their doors. Always seeking to stay on top of the latest methods, Dr. Torpy and his associate, Dr. Kelly Schroeder, are the only two physicians in the area to be certified with the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine. Totally Vein is continually setting the bar for high-quality procedures across the country. In the past, when veins were damaged, doctors performed a procedure called “vein stripping,” which
is just about as pleasant for patients and doctors as the name suggests. However, the past 15 to 20 years have been a technological revolution in the field of vein surgery. With the use of thermal ablation and a new technique called VenaSeal, vein surgery is considerably less involved than it used to be. In more traditional vein surgery techniques, anesthetic is administered from the beginning of the vein, usually in the ankle, to the end of the vein, located in the groin, which can cause discomfort. VenaSeal, however, only requires a single prick of lidocaine to access the vein. The difference

is considerable, and, according to Dr. Torpy, “with this new technique, since there is no injury to the surrounding tissues, incidents of blood clots and numbness are virtually gone. The risk is very, very small.” Dr. Torpy notes that his patients are often surprised about how easy the procedure is and what a huge difference it makes to their quality of life. With no stitches to be removed and little to no recovery time, patients can go back to their everyday lives within hours of having their veins treated. At Totally Vein, they offer complete vein treatment in-house. “When a patient comes in, she is examined by a nurse and a physician,” Dr. Torpy explains. “Then, she gets an ultrasound. We can give her a diagnosis and propose a treatment plan in one visit.” The atmosphere at Totally Vein is patient-driven, and they strive to minimize waiting time. Dr. Torpy puts it best, saying, “One of the things we really emphasize is that we are on time. Everyone hates waiting in doctors’ offices, so I have extrapolated that into the business…I think that is a big part of office procedure in a practice like ours.” This philosophy has paid off over the years and has created a dynamic that keeps people coming back. A patient named Shari Palmer, who is the second generation in her family to go to Dr. Torpy, enjoys her experience at Totally Vein. “Omaha is a great place to find doctors, and Dr. Torpy is one of them,” she says. “My mom went to him, and she loved him.
He remembered my mother! He was really good with her, and they always shared some laughs. When you want medical care, you want good medical care, and he and Jackie both exhibit that. When you go there, you feel like you are going to be taken care of, not like you’re just a number.” The most rewarding aspect of Dr. Torpy’s job is the satisfaction of his patients. Varicose veins, though unsightly, may not seem to be a pressing health issue. However, they can develop into serious problems when left untreated. Varicose veins are caused by insufficient circulation. Veins are meant to return blood to the heart, and within them are valves meant to close and open. When these valves become abnormal or incompetent, the vein allows blood to travel in the wrong direction, causing other valves to fail. The result is visible skin injury and the bulges we call varicose veins. Untreated, this issue can lead to skin ulcers and even limb loss. Because varicose veins tend to develop over time, it is essential to monitor your symptoms, especially if you have a family history of the condition. Whether your current concern is the detriment to your health or the unsightliness of the bulging veins, consider a visit to the family at Totally Vein for the quality treatment you deserve. For more information, call 402934-6996. Visit www.totallyveinomaha.com to learn more about the vein treatments provided at Totally Vein. The office is located at 17001 Lakeside Hills Plaza, Suite 102, in Omaha. WE

Good Looks
Lose Fat, Not Time Nonsurgical Body Sculpting By Loretta McCollum
Every day, you rise before dawn, stumble out the door, and stagger into the gym. Your eating habits are cleaner than an operating room. You do everything right, but your love handles linger, and your muffin top won’t melt. What can you do to shrink those stubborn fat pockets that diet and exercise won’t touch? That is, what can you do if you don’t want to undergo surgery? Today’s technology provides several procedures that utilize heat, cold, ultrasonic waves, and lasers, some of which permanently destroy fat cells with little or no downtime. These aren’t your mother’s cellophane wraps! Results are usually long-term, and there is very little discomfort. These procedures are typically best for people who are slightly to moderately overweight. Most of these procedures can be performed over the lunch hour, allowing you to return to your daily routine immediately. Want to melt away those fat cells while comfortably relaxing? SculpSure is a laser technology that involves wrapping a belt-like device around the target area; the device delivers heated laser pulses to melt fat. It’s effective on multiple body types and is typically applied to the upper and lower abdomen or the flank area between the ribs and hip. During the 25-minute treatment, fat cells are literally destroyed while you recline, read, or take a nap. Once destroyed, those cells will not regenerate. Your body will naturally flush out the dead cells. This is a gradual process; you
28

can expect to see your results over a period of several weeks. If you love getting a hot stone massage, consider truSculpt. This procedure utilizes radio-frequency technology to diminish fat cells in larger areas like the abdomen. One treatment lasts about an hour. Patients can return to their normal routine immediately following the treatment. Results are usually visible after about six weeks as the body breaks down the targeted fat cells and eliminates them. Some individuals opt for a second treatment for fine tuning. Vanquish is another radio-frequency option for that pesky belly flab. It involves a series of four weekly treatments to permanently eliminate fat cells. Picture yourself stretched out and relaxed as a horseshoe-shaped apparatus is placed over the target area. Once turned on, it feels much like a heat lamp on a low setting. After 45 minutes, a technician may administer a Cellutone treatment to mechanically massage and smooth out the area that was treated. ›››

Heat and cold may be opposites, but they both have incredible power to destroy fat cells. Fat cells freeze at higher temperatures than other tissues, which allows techniques like CoolSculpting to use cold to kill fat cells without harming the surrounding tissue. During treatment, a handheld applicator, applied to the skin, supplies targeted cooling to the fat cells underneath. As it does after radio-frequency treatments, the body then metabolizes and eventually eliminates the dead cells. CoolSculpting is a good option for muffin tops, saddle bags, and belly fat. Successive treatments provide enhanced results. Ultrasonic energy can also be channeled to obliterate troublesome fatty areas. UltraShape is a procedure in which ultrasonic energy pulses destroy the fat cell walls, releasing the fat as triglycerides, which are then processed by the liver and eliminated naturally. A special belt is wrapped around the treatment area and a gel is applied to the skin. A trained technician moves a handheld device over the area, delivering painless ultrasonic pulses. Initial results may be visible after just two weeks. Treatments are administered three times per week over a four-week period. Some areas, including the hips, thighs, and upper arms, are particularly resistant to efforts to tone and shape. Lipo-Light is a technique that blends tradition and technology. It combines LED light therapy with posttreatment physical exercise. The light therapy penetrates the skin and opens the fat cell walls, allowing the contents to escape. Once the fat escapes, it travels through the body as fatty acids to tissue, where it is then burned off during post-treatment exercise. A typical Lipo-Light session includes 20 minutes of treatment followed by about 10 minutes of exercise. The initial treatment cycle is two treatments per week for four weeks. Many patients return for maintenance sessions. Lipo-Light produces long-term results in conjunction with exercise and a healthy diet. An added benefit of Lipo-Light is that it has the potential to increase collagen levels, firming the skin and enhancing the body sculpting effects of the treatment. It’s important to remember that many of these procedures produce gradual results over several weeks but that the results are long-lasting. To find out which of these procedures best suits your needs, consult a local plastic surgeon, dermatologist, or medi-spa. Do Circumstances and Choices Define You? Accept Responsibility and Allow Them to Redefine You We are all where we are in life because of a combination of circumstances, choices, and, sometimes, a little luck. While many of us are quick to blame our problems on circumstances or bad luck, fewer of us are willing to accept responsibility for the choices we’ve made that have led us to our current circumstances. It is much easier for us to blame others for our problems. “Responsibility: A detachable burden easily shifted to the shoulders of God, Fate, Fortune, Luck or one’s neighbor. In the days of astrology it was customary to unload it upon a star.” —Ambrose Bierce The problem with perpetually living in this state of feeling that circumstances and your happiness are out of your control, often leaves people feeling like a helpless victim. So what would happen if we chose to accept responsibility for our actions and choices? What if instead of letting a bad choice define us and continue to play the victim, we chose to take a different path? We can choose to learn from a less than desirable outcome and make the choice to do something new and move forward. We tend to think that our circumstances are what drive our happiness or lack thereof. In reality, it is how we choose to react to circumstances and decisions that truly impacts our happiness and

success. How else can you explain those individuals that grow up in dangerous neighborhoods and still choose to follow a different path? They make a commitment to themselves that they want more and that they can have more. Happiness itself is also a choice. Look at the people who live with mental or physical disabilities. There are many of these individuals that choose happiness rather than sadness or despair. There will always be someone whose circumstances are worse than yours. It doesn’t mean it needs to define who you are. Consider taking a look back on the past year. What decisions have you made that have led you to feel happier? Better yet, look at some of the choices you made that had less than desirable outcomes. You have a choice every day on how you are going to feel and how you are going to react. Are you going to embark on the coming months with a positive attitude and the realization that you always have a choice in how you react to things, or are you satisfied with blaming your feelings and emotions on others and on circumstances? Here is to hoping we all enter 2018 having made the choice to be happier by doing the things that keep us feeling that way. “I must do something” always solves more problems than “something must be done.” —Author Unknown

Show ’Em You Love ’Em Do Something Special…Spend Time!
By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS
I am in a February rut. Every year, I sit down to write this column in February, and the question in my head is: How can I write about LOVE this year? In the past couple of years, I’ve written about accepting others and the difference between love and hate, like and dislike. This year, I want to talk about showing love to others. Brother Dear (BD) told me that he and some friends are planning to take an older friend, Dan, to a special event out of town. They made a similar trip a year ago, and Dan loved it. The guys knew that Dan was disappointed that the timing didn’t work out for his son and grandson to take him, so they planned this excursion. Dan’s a special guy—these friends are special, too. That conversation morphed into one about families and how kids should show their parents, especially as their parents get older, how much they love them by doing something special. Over the years, BD and I both took Mom on excursions. I went with Mom and two of her sisters on a road trip to New England. BD took Mom to family reunions. He made sure she made it to her grandkids’ weddings and graduations. Mom and I went to her little sister’s 90th birthday party. Between us, BD and I made sure she attended every family event to which she was invited… and some to which she wasn’t. We threw parties when she turned 80, and 90, and 100.
When Mom was approaching her 96th birthday, she informed us that she wasn’t having a birthday that year. “My sister died on her 96th birthday. I don’t want to die on mine…so I’m not celebrating it,” she declared. We had coincidental non-birthday gatherings every day of her birthday week. The kids stopped to visit because “they were in the neighborhood.” We brought pizza and said, “We were hungry and thought maybe you were, too.” We’d go to lunch and “just happen” to run into other family or friends at the restaurant. Mom knew she was loved. She was Grandma Ag to all of our friends…and to many of our kids’ friends, too. When Dan’s friends take him on these road trips, he knows he’s loved. Every time you do something nice…share a small kindness…for someone else, you show them that you love them. Take Uncle Ron to a concert in the park. Give Aunt Angie a drive in the country on a beautiful spring day. Take a neighbor out to lunch…or just go over and spend time sitting and talking on the porch or patio. Call someone you haven’t talked to for a while. A few moments mean a lot. Sometimes a hug means more. Happy February! This month, take the time to show some love. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Bathroom Bliss Even Bathrooms Deserve a Little Luxury
By Robyn V. Powell
Bathrooms have replaced kitchens as the most remodeled room in the home…and not just the master bathroom. Whether you’re building, remodeling, or just dreaming, exploring beautiful bathroom design will inspire you to change the way you think about this key area of your home. The bathroom doesn’t have to be all about function. Beautiful form can make the difference between a room designed to simply serve a utilitarian purpose and one that feels like a relaxing retreat. One common thread that is expected to continue through 2018 is homeowners’ desire to break out of the mold and make their space their own. When it comes to bathrooms, homeowners are looking to technology, bold accents, and luxe amenities to give their space personality and turn the room into a sanctuary. Brass fixtures, bold color, and patterned tile are a few of the latest trends showing up in bathrooms everywhere. More than ever, homeowners are viewing the master bath as a place of peace and solitude—a secluded retreat designed to help them escape from the rest of the world. While much of the attention has been on the shower in recent years, the bathtub is once again making a splash! More beautiful and spacious than their predecessors, modern tubs are designed for ultimate relaxation. The sophisticated island tub, available in a multitude of shapes, delivers maximum “Wow!” factor when placed in the center of the room. Deep, freestanding soaking tubs are the go-to amenity
34
February 2018
for luxury homeowners looking for a place to unwind. With no jets, the simple soaker tub provides a peaceful experience and is available in stylish finishes such as porcelain, concrete, copper, and stainless steel. Whirlpool bathtubs—using water jets, air jets, or a combination of both—remain popular as stress relievers and as a way to massage tired muscles. Whether it’s bath time or shower time, bathing is the perfect time to indulge all the senses with options like built-in audio systems, mood-enhancing colors known as chromatherpy, and even tub-side refrigeration. Fully loaded showers feature systems for water temperature and pressure, steam, and built-in stereo or television, all controlled from an LCD screen mounted on the shower wall. To conserve water, luxury bathrooms can be equipped with environmentally friendly low-flow toilets and showerheads or touchless faucets. Bathroom vanities can set the tone of any bathroom. In the bathroom, the availability of good cabinet space and functionality is just as important as style, and, with the high moisture content and everyday use, investing in high-quality cabinetry is essential. ›››

While granite and marble remain popular countertop choices, you might also consider engineered stone in this moistureheavy room. Engineered stone not only emulates the character of natural stone, it is also maintenance-free; won’t crack, stain, or scratch; and resists mold and mildew growth. Decorative floor and shower tiles in bold Mediterranean motifs are trending this year. Whether you prefer intricate Moroccan-inspired patterns or bold geometric shapes, these colorful ceramics can freshen any space, add an exotic flair, and evoke the feeling of being permanently on vacation! Ceramic tile that looks exactly like real wood (but doesn’t warp from moisture like wood might) is also a popular flooring choice in the bathroom. Whatever your choice of flooring, consider incorporating radiant heat. Not only will it feel pleasantly warm underfoot on cold mornings, it promotes faster drying, reducing the risk of slips and falls. Petite powder baths typically don’t see a lot of traffic, giving homeowners an opportunity to focus on the form. You can splurge and bring something fun or sculptural into this small space. Handcrafted sinks are making a big comeback. From intricately carved pottery sinks to gleaming metals like hammered copper, handcrafted sinks come in all shapes and sizes and are akin to a piece of fine art, personalizing and upgrading your space. In children’s bathrooms, where surfaces and fixtures will see lots of wear and tear, the focus is on durability and finishes that can stand up to heavy use. Pair granite or engineered stone countertops with bright, scratch-resistant chrome fixtures. Installing a fan with humidity sensors ensures proper ventilation in case kids forget to turn the fan on or off. For the ultimate in spa-like experience, consider a heated towel rack. No need to endure the post-shower chill ever again! What could be more luxurious than wrapping yourself in a toasty towel? Available in wallmounted or freestanding units, some have a programmable time function that allows you to dry off with a towel heated precisely how and when you want it! Take a look around your bathroom and see if it could use a little love. Don’t neglect this functional space in your home! With some imagination, your bathroom could become your favorite room in the house. Sources for this article included: consumerreports.org, www.nari.org, and realtor.com. WE

Faith-Driven Mental Health Spence Counseling Leads the Way By Jackie Byers
Spence Counseling Center offers special hope to those who are hurting. “Our integrative therapy succeeds because it combines biblical principles with applied psychological principles,” says owner Charles Spence. Charles joined his father’s successful faith-based therapy practice, purchasing the business when his father retired. Under Charles’ leadership, the business continues to serve a grateful clientele. The therapists at Spence Counseling Center are experienced and dedicated to their clients. “Most of our therapists have at least five years’ previous experience when they join us,” Charles continues. “More importantly, our therapists can meet their clients’ needs. They don’t have hours, per se. They are able to set their own appointments to suit their clients’ needs. If a client faces a crisis, therapists can see them at any time.” Charles is the CEO, so he carries the cell phone— and not just any phone. He will answer any call, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Clients in need can rest assured that help is always available. Rhonda Spence is the chief operating officer. She coordinates all aspects of the business, making sure things are working smoothly. Lori Goodwin is the program director for chemical dependency, and Mark Miller rounds out the management team as clinical director. Charles is particularly involved in family counseling. He works with individuals, couples, families, adolescents, and young children. He has in-depth experience helping families heal. “Most individuals become couples happily but bring baggage with them into the relationship. As the union matures, that baggage can cause communication problems and lead to difficulty in successfully communicating,” he explains. “For example, she complains that he doesn’t listen. He complains that she wants to talk when he is watching football. Interior monologues often intensify this type of communication breakdown.” “Our personalities are God-given. They determine how we interpret communication from others,” Charles continues. This means that when you receive a message from, say, your spouse, you relate it to previous messages. You translate the current message in terms of the previous messages, some of which may have been irritating. “My goal is to solve issues such as power struggles by changing core beliefs. These beliefs determine behavior, and only when core beliefs are corrected can true longterm change occur.” “Helping couples to communicate clearly at appropriate times is a long-term but satisfying process,” Charles notes. “It eliminates problems. Even when power issues exist in the relationship, our techniques offer solutions.” When children are involved, the problems are more complex. In cases like these, Charles prefers to begin by
40
February 2018
seeing the family members together. “I begin with the group because seeing them interact lets me learn about the dynamics involved. I may then continue group sessions or deal with family members individually.” Adolescents and children often struggle with different issues than those of adults. “With teenagers, some issues may result from their parents’ issues. Others are caused by social media interactions. It is essential for me to determine what the issues are. Often, the client may not realize what is causing the problem. This is why longterm therapy is necessary to discover and then to change the behavior.” “We base our treatments on biblical principles because they work. As Romans 5:3-4 (paraphrased) states, ‘Our trials produce perseverance, character, and hope. Hope does not make things easier; it makes them possible.’Our primary goal is to help people solve their problems. We want to help end the hurt and the fear. That is why we never refuse to help anyone, no matter what their beliefs or non-belief.” Over the years, Spence Counseling has helped many people with many problems, from chemical addictions to compulsive gambling and over-spending. Client William shares, “Spence Counseling taught me to build a stronghold in my mind so I could rid myself of those problems from the past.” Client Kacey calls the practice a godsend. “Spence Counseling has been there for me through all the difficult times in my life. They have helped me through them.” Randy shares, “Spence Counseling has literally saved my life. Through painstaking hours of therapy, they have helped me remain gambling-free. I have developed a wholeness in my life again.” To get a full idea of how Spence Counseling can help you or a loved one, visit spencecounselingcenter.com and click the Click Here to Get Started! button. New Year, New Yard The Latest in Landscaping
By Anne Yankus
Warm weather is just around the corner, making now the perfect time to start thinking about your springtime landscaping! Popular new trends include maximizing small spaces by using multipurpose features and combination container accents, creating bold alfresco dining areas, and prioritizing craftsmanship with standing structures. Let’s start by discussing the many things to plant in the yard. Trees can serve many purposes in landscaping, but the most obvious two would have to be providing shade and decoration. Shade trees are great for cooling your house in the summertime and slashing that high electric bill. Some examples of popular, fast-growing shade trees would be the northern red oak, the freeman maple, the Japanese zelkova, and the tulip tree. Evergreen trees provide year-round foliage to shelter your home’s exterior and can be planted relatively close to your house. Decorative, blossoming trees are also popular and can make a beautiful addition to your yard. Some popular springtime bloomers are the Leonard Messel magnolia, the Venus dogwood, the Oklahoma redbud, and the double flowering plum. Just like everything else in life, don’t choose a tree just by how it looks. Tree diseases are a common malady and can cost you both money and growing time. Before deciding which trees to plant, be sure to check out how disease-resistant they are.
Some examples of hardy trees that thrive in the Midwest include crab apples (flowers in spring), serviceberry (flowers in spring and bright foliage in fall), black gum (great for shade), and the northern red oak. Shade and flowers are nice, but what if you really just want to keep your neighbors from spying on everything you do? That’s where privacy shrubs come in. Many types of trees are good for building a privacy hedge. Depending on which variety you choose, they can do everything from reducing noise and snow to screening your yard from passersby year-round. Evergreens are a popular choice for this purpose; they come in tall (American and green giant arborvitae) and short (emerald and nigra arborvitae) varieties. If you’re more of a deciduous shrub fan, the rose of Sharon and north privet are also popular varieties for hedges. Now, if you’re still thinking, “new landscaping sounds nice, but my yard is fine as it is,” think again. Landscaping is actually one of the best investments you can make on your house. A well-designed and well-maintained landscape can add up to 20 ›››

percent more value to your home. If you ever plan to sell, landscaping is definitely a must (remember, landscaping can take years to mature, so it’s good to get started early). According to the American Society of Landscape Architects, a good rule of thumb is to invest at least 10 percent of your home’s value into landscaping. Even if you prefer to plant your own annuals and mow your own lawn, it’s a great idea to seek professional help (such as a landscape architect or designer) when designing and implementing your landscaping. Landscape architects are great for people who want a change in the yard but aren’t quite sure what they want to do. Landscape architects are also great resources for large, custom projects, like the newly popular crafted structures and alfresco areas. They can draw up plans and obtain any building permits you might need. If you’ve already got a solid idea of what you want, a landscape designer may be a better fit. Landscape designers typically have horticultural backgrounds and can draw up a blueprint to help you place all the elements you want in the space you have. They are experts in choosing plants and can help you design your garden around your needs, including spaces for kids or pets to play or outdoor eating areas. Don’t forget planting beds! Garden beds require more forethought than you may assume. There are many priorities to consider. How much maintenance are you willing to do? Are you hoping to attract birds and butterflies, or would you rather focus on plants that will not bring neighborhood wildlife into your yard? Which plants are native to your area? Where will the garden be placed (the level of shade and soil drainage help determine which plants will thrive)? For ideas, you can check out garden plans online. Once you have some idea of what you want, it’s time to call the landscape designer to help you turn your plan into a reality. Landscaping isn’t something to hammer out as a weekend warrior. Take the time now to plan out what you want, hire the professionals you need, and get the job done right! Healthy State of Mind Taking Care of Your Mental Health
By Ashley Anderson
The millions of Americans living with mental illness can feel miserable—trapped or controlled by their own mind or feelings. It can affect every facet of life, from personal relationships to professional success to physical health. Although the symptoms of mental illness may be less visible than those of physical illness, mental health should be taken very seriously. Mental illness varies widely. Some of the more common conditions include anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), drug and alcohol addiction, and bipolar disorder. Symptoms vary by condition, but there is a lot of overlap. Anxiety can include overwhelming fear, worry, or guilt. With OCD, worrisome thoughts lead to compulsive behaviors like excessive cleaning or unreasonably strict religious activity. Clinical depression often presents as feelings of extreme sadness, fatigue, or lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities. Seasonal affective disorder is a form of depression that occurs during the colder, darker months. Bipolar disorder can look (and feel) like the patient is on a roller coaster between depressive and manic behavior. PTSD generally results from a significant trauma and is common in people who have lived or served in combat zones. Their symptoms, which can include strong feelings of guilt, isolation, irritability, or always being “on guard,” are often triggered by sounds, sights,

or smells that bring to mind the traumatic event. Drug and alcohol addiction is recognizable by the person’s inability to stop using the substances in question. Mental illness can also result in associated physical distress, including headaches, stomach pain, or other body aches. In addition, untreated mental illness can and does lead to destructive behavior, self-inflicted harm, and even suicide. It’s important to note that stress, sadness, anxiety, and other strong emotions are a natural part of life. When these feelings persist for weeks and start interfering with work, relationships, or school, it’s time to call your doctor. Extreme changes in mood, energy, or behavior can also be signs of mental illness. In particular: If you or someone you know shows any signs of suicidal thoughts, call emergency health services immediately. Mental illness has many causes and may arise at any stage in life. In some cases, mental illness is an inherited trait; those with a family history of mental illness are more likely to experience mental illness of their own. Environmental factors, like exposure to drugs before birth, are another big contributor to mental health problems.
www.womensedition.com
Environmental factors that occur later in life, such as a traumatic experience, can also impact a person’s mental health. There is no way to explicitly prevent mental illness. However, like many chronic conditions, it can often be managed with the help of a specialist, and your quality of life may be vastly improved with treatment. Your physician may refer you to a mental health specialist for specialized care. Psychiatrists provide therapy and are licensed to prescribe medication. Some common medications used to treat mental illness include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), sedatives, and antipsychotics. There are many medicines to choose from; you might need to try a few different ones before you and your doctor find the one that works best for you. Depending on the severity of the illness, hospitalization or a clinical care facility may be needed to ensure proper and consistent treatment. Psychologists provide various types of therapy, including “talk therapy,” hypnosis, and behavioral modification strategies, but they cannot prescribe medication. The emotional support of therapy may be very helpful, either one-on-one or in a group setting. Hypnosis may help with behavior modification and addiction. Some less traditional methods of treatment are also available. NeuroStar TMS therapy is a treatment for depression that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate underactive areas of the brain. Patients whose depression is due to seasonal affective disorder may benefit from light therapy, in which they are exposed to artificial light that mimics natural daylight and is believed to affect the brain chemicals that influence mood and sleep. Biofeedback is also emerging as a potential treatment for mental illness. Through carefully placed sensors and exposure/response practice, patients may be able to learn to control their physiological responses to certain triggers. There are also some changes you can make to your daily life to improve your mental health. Physical exercise is known to release endorphins, which can improve mood. Dietary changes can also help. Therapy animals have helped many people with mental illness; they can be utilized during therapy sessions or by having one at home. Mental illness can be debilitating, but it is almost always treatable. Talk to your doctor. Don’t put it off—just think of how much better your life could be with proper treatment! An Inside Look
Lance Buick’s Auto Station Certified Female Friendly By Joey Hoffman
Lance Buick is the owner of Auto Station, a full-service automotive repair shop (minus bodywork and paint). As a kid, Lance decided on a career in car repair after witnessing his mom, Sally, deal with repairmen. “My mom had trouble getting her car fixed and getting stuff explained to her,” Lance says, with a laugh. “They treated her like she didn’t know what she was doing, but she did.” He is a fierce fan of the single mother who raised him in Westgate. “When I was young, we didn’t have a lot of money,” he recalls. “Mom worked two jobs—as a secretary and as a waitress. Back in 1970, very few women had sales jobs. She worked for Pitney Bowes in the office, but she wanted to get into sales. She saw what the men were making. She saw sales guys not working all day and making three times what she made. She asked her boss to get into sales…pesters him, pesters him, pesters him… and he decided to give her a chance.” Lance notes that her boss gave her what was likely to be difficult territory and probably figured she would want her old job back. Not so. “She was salesperson of the year, nationwide,” he relates proudly. “She got a sales plaque that said, ‘Sally Buick, Salesman of the Year’ because there were no women in sales. She had that in her office for motivation. She went from making $10,000 a year to $80–90,000—just like that.” Ultimately, he says, his mom became sales manager. “She was really well respected.” With his mom’s story pushing him forward, Lance has built a successful business around cultivating relationships and implementing responsible practices that help empower women in a male-dominated environment. Auto Station participates in the AskPatty.com Certified Female Friendly® program, offered by an industry website that gives women expert automotive advice and research. From Lance’s perspective, the certification helps him work even better with his female customers. “I see a lot of women bringing in the family car. Women will tell you what the car is doing; guys want to tell you what’s wrong with it. Women help us find problems faster.” Roughly 60 percent of the customers at Auto Station are women. Auto Station opened in June of 1998 on the site of the former Melrose Ballroom. “We put every nickel we had into buying this land and building this building. My mom took her retirement and risked it all,” says Lance. Like his mom, Lance works hard, logging 12and 14-hour days and modeling the family work ethic for his daughter, Jessica, and his son, Dylan, both of whom are service advisors who work alongside him. Of course, he’s noticed that “Buick” is funny name for a man who works in the auto industry. “I was going

to call it Buick’s Auto Repair, but we figured—Buicks never break down, so Owner Lance Buick we’d go out of business,” he laughs. Faithful customers have returned to Auto Station since day one. Some of them are second-generation customers, Lance notes. “I met them when their kids were babies, and those kids are in college now.” The business gains 20 to 30 new customers a month, mostly by word of mouth. “We treat everyone like we want them to treat us.” It’s not rocket science, Lance says. “I just tell my technicians to treat every car they look at like it belonged to their mother. Our goal is to provide the vehicle’s owner with enough information to make the right choice when it comes to their transportation needs. We really want people to call us if they ever have an automotive question they need answered.” Since he was 12 years old, Lance relates, he has raced “everything with wheels.” He still gets giddy when recalling how he “We treat everyone like raced motorcycles while sporting his grandfather’s we want them to treat steel-toed paratrooper’s us.” It’s not rocket science, boots. His wheels of choice over the years? Lance says. “I just tell my Motocross motorcycles, go karts, dirt track stock cars, technicians to treat every and Formula 440s. “The Formula 440 is like a big car they look at like it go cart,” he says. “They’re belonged to their mother.” fun as heck—top speed is 90–100 MPH.” Lance’s drive has always been fueled by his mother, who taught her son to value women. He is one-eighth Sioux Lakota, and in his entryway hang The Ten Indian Commandments. “Show great respect for your fellow beings,” reads one. Says Lance: “I started this because of my mom; she’s my biggest influence.” If you need car repair and are tired of the runaround, come see Lance Buick and the Auto Station team at 13209 Q Street. Focus on Finance
Growth Investing Versus Value Investing Which Method Brings the Best Return? By George Morgan
There are about 7,700 actively managed mutual funds on the market today. An actively managed mutual fund is one where a professional money manager buys and sells individual stocks to enhance the fund’s performance. There are two major methods used by these professionals to decide which stocks to buy and sell: value investing and growth investing. The value investing approach was developed in the 1930s by Benjamin Graham, who was a professor at Columbia University at the time. He initially taught the approach to students in the College of Business. He later published a book called “The Intelligent Investor,” which is a detailed blueprint on how to make investment decisions using the value approach. The book has gone through numerous revisions and is still in print today. His most famous student is Warren Buffett, who took Professor Graham’s course at Columbia and became a strong practitioner and advocate of value investing. Some value investors treat the methodology almost like a religion—they are the true believers, and all others are heathens. The value investor begins by gathering financial information on a publicly traded company she is interested in. Then, she calculates what she believes to be the value of the company. This value is then divided by the number of shares outstanding, which gives her what she feels is the correct price of the stock. If the current stock price is below what the investor believes to be the true value of the company, she buys. The assumption is that others will then discover the stock’s discounted value and will begin to buy it, as well, driving the price of the stock up to its real value. When the price of the stock rises higher than what the investor feels is its true value, she sells it. In today’s market, dominated by index funds and electronic trading, there are some issues with the value investors’ assumptions about how stock prices are determined. For the value investing method to work, many other investors must come to the same conclusion about the stock price and follow through by buying the stock. The first problem with this is that investors’ estimates of a company’s net worth can vary dramatically. Second, not a lot of dollars are being invested using the value approach. It takes a lot of buyers to move the price of a stock. If nobody cares, the stock price is going nowhere, no matter how undervalued it may be. Growth investing is decades younger than value investing. Unlike value investing, growth investing does not have a founding father or seminal textbook. Growth investors simply look for fast-growing companies. In the late 1990s, companies like Coca-Cola and Microsoft were the darlings of growth investors. Today, they focus on large tech companies such as Apple and Amazon. Growth investors don’t take the time to
50
February 2018
research a company’s financials and develop a sense of what they think the company is worth. They ignore the price of the stock and believe that a company’s rapid growth is enough to push the company’s stock price upward. How have the value and growth funds performed? They are actively managed mutual funds and, like all actively managed funds, less than 1 percent have outperformed the market over the long term. Over the course of the last half a century, there has been no clear overall winner between value investing and growth investing. Value may be the best performer for several years in a row, and then growth will outperform during the next several years. Over the course of the last five years, however, growth has been the clear leader—in some years, outperforming value by double digits. A primary reason that these two investment approaches are unable to beat the market over the long term is that there are many restrictions placed on fund managers. There are limits on what percentage an individual stock can be of the total value of a fund’s assets. When fund managers reach the limit on their favorite stock, they must buy stocks that they feel are less valuable. When shareholders want to move out of the market or move on to some other hot fund recommended by their brokers, the fund manager must liquidate, sometimes being forced to sell their best-performing holdings. All of these factors inhibit performance. How should you approach growth and value funds as you strive to grow your 401(k)? In one sense, there’s no need to choose—in the long run, both growth funds and value funds will underperform the plain old index fund. This result has changed Warren Buffett from being the icon of value investing to being the poster child for index funds. He has directed that, when he dies, his wife’s financial advisors should put her money in index funds. ’Nuf said. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. Independent Retirement Living Exciting Options for Today’s Seniors
By Linda Barnes
Senior housing choices are more attractive than ever before. This is good news for today’s seniors, many of whom are retiring while they are still healthy and active. Many of the options also appeal to empty nesters who plan to keep working but wish to downsize. It’s all the freedom and independence you want, without the burden of maintenance and upkeep! Whether you’re looking for a 55+ community, a senior apartment, elder housing, or a continuing care village, there is sure to be a solution for happy and active living during your later years. We can choose to own or lease. Homes, townhouses, condos, and apartments are available in many locations. Amenities abound, specially designed for senior lifestyles. A senior living community near my home is convenient to shopping, health care, and entertainment. Choices include studio apartments with patio and kitchenette. Spacious one- and two-bedroom apartments are additional options. Everyone can enjoy the library, walking paths, and on-site activities. Laundry and housekeeping options make for easy living. Activities such as crafts, billiards, a community garden, computer room, fitness area, game rooms, and chef-prepared meals provide opportunities for social interaction. Parking is available for those who drive, and complimentary transportation is provided for those who do not. A nice feature of this particular community is that rental is on a month-to-month basis.
Spacious outdoor common areas and indoor lounges are a plus. Now to the question that is sure to arise: “What can I afford?” A personal financial advisor can help with crucial retirement planning. Downsizing early frees seniors up for travel and can ease the burden on family later on. Some senior community websites provide a helpful calculator that compares present income and expenses to various options in the community. More upscale senior communities offer resort-type ambience. These luxurious communities offer such amenities as indoor pool, spa, fitness facility, five-star dining, salon, and laundry and housekeeping services. Tennis and golf are often available on site. Concierge and chauffeur services make these communities feel more like vacationing than retirement living. Of course, high-end, resort-style retirement comes with a higher price tag. Often, a sizable upfront entrance fee is required. However, you might expect a large portion of the entrance fee to be returned to you, if you move, or to your estate, if you stay there through the end of your life. This could be part of a strategy to preserve your asset base.

Unlike the retirement community in my neighborhood, which consists of apartments only, some 55+ communities are made up of homes, townhouses, and condos. They may have a centrally located clubhouse with dining and recreational facilities. Planned activities are supplemented by residents’ own interest groups. Such groups might focus on crafting, cards, quilting, writing, walking, tennis, or golf. Residents pay an association fee to cover the cost of maintaining property and to meet community expenses. These 55+ communities are age-restricted and are managed by a non-resident owner. A more recent entry into this arena is the concept of co-housing. Attached homes or condos are organized on a common property. Instead of professional, non-resident ownership, the residents own and manage their common property. This option appeals to many seniors and empty nesters who are ready to downsize but are still quite active. The homes are smaller, occupy less land, and are often quite energy efficient. Future residents typically buy in during the development of the community. A common house with a kitchen, dining room, and living room is often a feature. It may also have two or three bedrooms to accommodate guests. The emphasis is very much on community: bonding, caring for each other, sharing some meals, and working together to manage the community. All options designed for senior living typically include features that make aging in place easier for residents. These include things like no-step entries, elevators, wider doorways, extra lighting, and grab bars in bathrooms—all designed to accommodate the needs of seniors. The continuing care community is an additional option. Here, one might begin in accommodations designed for seniors who are healthy and active enough to live without assistance. On the same grounds are facilities for assisted living, should that become necessary after surgery or when help is needed with activities of daily living. These communities avoid the necessity of moving from location to location as needs change. A third component of the continuing care arrangement is skilled nursing care. This option provides a great deal of security, knowing that you will be able to stay in the same community even if it becomes impossible to remain independent. Menopause It’s Hot in Here…and I Think It’s Me!
By Connie Keck
Menopause is a universal female experience, but it is also a uniquely personal experience—no two women undergo menopause in quite the same way. The changes can be significant and are generally unpleasant, but menopause doesn’t have to be a time fraught with fear, confusion, or embarrassment. In short, menopause is the natural point in a woman’s life after which she no longer menstruates. For most women, this occurs in their 40s or 50s; according to the Mayo Clinic, the average age in the United States is 51 years. The medical definition generally includes lack of menstruation for 12 months. A detectable rise in the level of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) in the blood is the most sensitive laboratory test to confirm menopause. A hysterectomy (especially one that removes both the uterus and the ovaries) also brings on menopause, no matter what your age. The symptoms in this case may seem more severe because they occur all at once instead of over a series of years. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy may jump-start menopause, though your periods and fertility may return after your treatment has ended. In most cases, menopause is an entirely natural process caused by the decline in reproductive hormones. Your periods will likely become less regular over time until your ovaries stop producing eggs and you stop having periods altogether. If only that were the end of it! Alas, menopause comes with a whole constellation of
symptoms, none of which are particularly pleasant. Symptoms may include irregular periods, vaginal dryness, hot flashes, chills, night sweats, sleep problems, mood changes, weight gain and slowed metabolism, thinning hair and dry skin, and loss of breast fullness. Other problems include increased risk of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, urinary incontinence, and sexual dysfunction. Sounds great, right? Fortunately, there are many effective treatments to alleviate these symptoms and smooth the transition. Even though menopause is a natural biological process, you would likely benefit from consulting with your physician. It is important to find the right medical professional to assist you through the maze of options available for the treatment of your symptoms. If you don’t feel that your current physician is the right person, ask around. Some medical professionals specialize in menopausal treatments. Since menopausal symptoms are caused by hormone depletion, many women choose hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to treat their symptoms. HRT comes in many forms, including lotions,

vaginal creams, vaginal rings, patches, implantable pellets, and transdermal gel. Most hormone therapy formulations also come in pill form. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) includes hormones that are chemically identical to those produced by the human body. Some providers who prescribe BHRT products perform saliva or blood tests in their patients first in order to assess their unique hormonal needs and then prescribe customized treatment solutions. These customized hormones are often prepared at compounding pharmacies. Replacement hormones, like all medications, come with side effects. It’s important to discuss the risks and benefits with your physician to determine whether hormone replacement is the best choice for you and to decide how long you should undergo the therapy. There are also many natural remedies that are well known to ameliorate the symptoms of menopause. Try reducing your intake of inflammatory foods and empty calories, like added sugar, refined grains, processed oils, and fried foods. You might consider focusing on eating more fiber, getting more antioxidants from fresh veggies and fruits, and limiting refined carbs. You can also take advantage of natural stress relievers like exercise, meditation, and spending more time outdoors. (Hormones aside, positive changes to diet and exercise have the added benefit of improving your overall health.) Medicinal herbs, such as black cohosh and evening primrose oil, are also used to help manage menopausal symptoms. Some women note that these herbs are helpful, though they can also interact with other medications. As with any supplement, discuss these with a medical professional before consuming them. Acupuncture is useful for lowering anxiety or stress, helping to decrease pain and tension. If you find yourself standing in front of your bathroom mirror in the middle of the night, sweating profusely, it could be menopause. Try to remember that it’s perfectly natural and that millions of women before you have successfully endured what they probably referred to quietly as “The Change.” Wherever you are on your menopause journey, rest assured that you are not alone! Talk to your medical professional about how to best manage your symptoms, and get back to your life. Leasing Versus Buying Which One Makes Financial Sense for You? By Brennan Hallock
If you have ever driven a new vehicle off the lot, you know the excitement that comes with it. The new car smell, the smooth handling, and the exciting convenience features are only a few of the many benefits of acquiring a new vehicle. There’s one question that more and more drivers are struggling to answer before they drive away: “Should I lease, or should I buy?” For a long time, leasing was primarily concentrated in the luxury vehicle market, so many drivers didn’t give it a second thought. This has begun to change. These days, leasing options are offered for more economy and basic vehicles, as well. Add to this the consistently low interest rates, and leasing has become a tempting option for many drivers shopping for a new vehicle. Before you head down to the dealership, you should know the key differences between leasing a vehicle and buying one. The main difference, of course, is ownership. When buying, you buy the vehicle, either by paying for it up front or financing it with a loan. When leasing, the dealer retains ownership, and you pay a monthly fee to use the vehicle for the duration of the lease. At the end of the lease, you can generally choose to return the vehicle, trade it in, or purchase it. Buying almost always involves higher monthly costs and more cash up front, since you pay the full value of the vehicle. Leasing payments are only for the use of the vehicle during the lease term, and they mainly cover depreciation. This makes the cost of leasing much more manageable than buying for many drivers. When the term of a lease is finished, the lessee can take the vehicle back to the dealership, pay any end-of-contract fees, and walk away. This can be an advantage, as it is much less hassle and responsibility than trying to sell or trade in a vehicle that you own. When an owner goes to sell her vehicle, she often discovers that it has depreciated considerably. Vehicles tend to depreciate at a rate unlike almost anything else in their price range. It has been estimated that a new vehicle loses approximately 20 percent of its value as soon as it leaves the lot. When a driver leases a vehicle, the responsibility for depreciation is assumed by the dealership rather than by the driver. Leasing does have some limitations that may be disadvantages, depending on your driving situation. High mileage can lower the resale value of a vehicle. Therefore, most leases limit the number of miles that you are allowed to drive. If you exceed your limit (often 12,000–15,000 miles per year), you will be charged for the extra miles. Owning means you can drive any number of miles you like. You, as the owner, assume responsibility for the depreciation caused by high mileage. While leasing does provide some flexibility, you cannot simply choose to turn in your vehicle at any
58
February 2018
time without being penalized. If you own a vehicle, you can sell it whenever you choose and recoup some of the value. With a lease, you are locked into a term (usually, about three years). You can incur heavy penalties if you end the lease early. In order to determine whether leasing is right for you, you should ask yourself some questions. How much cash do you have available to put down on a new vehicle? If the number is low, leasing may be a better financial choice. How much do you drive each year? If you tend to take long road trips or regularly commute long distances, then the mileage limitations of a lease may cramp your style. If you just need a vehicle to get you around town, then leasing may be a good option. How long would you like to keep the vehicle? If you like to upgrade to a new vehicle every few years, then leasing will almost certainly be the cheaper option. If you like to hold onto one vehicle for most of its life, though, you sound more like a buyer. Finally, how good is your credit? Leasing is difficult (or expensive) if your credit rating is poor. Of course, bad credit can also be a problem if you want to buy but need to finance. When you buy with cash, or at least a large down payment, your credit rating is a smaller part of the equation. Once you’ve decided to lease, check into multiple dealerships. Just like with buying, shopping around can help you find a better deal. Different dealerships offer different rates and terms. Once you’ve found an option that fits your budget and needs, you can enjoy the excitement of driving a new vehicle without the responsibility of owning it. The Good Life
A Home Built for You A Primer on Custom Homes By Julie Kuntze
If you have ever considered having a home built just for you, or thought about what your dream home would be like, consider that the reality might be closer than you think. Prospective homebuyers are sometimes surprised to discover that a custom home can be built at almost any price point and is often comparable to what they would pay for an existing home of similar size and location. There are many benefits to building a custom home, like unique architectural features and the flexibility to design a home that meets the specific needs and aesthetic of the homeowner. The general process of building a custom home starts with your budget, the size of the home you are looking to build, the location you desire, and a basic wish list. The next step is to find a builder or community developer who matches your aesthetic, builds in an area appealing to you, and is easy to communicate with (a crucial part of the process). Once preplanning begins, you may be working with the builder, an architect, an interior designer, and, possibly, a civil engineer. This is when the home location is determined, permits are filed for, plans are drawn and finalized, and the budget is outlined. The preplanning phase can take roughly six months. Construction usually begins by pouring the foundation, followed by rough framing, after which electrical and HVAC systems are put in place. Next comes insulation, then drywall; interior and exterior finishes; trim; and the installation of flooring, fixtures, counters, and cabinets. The work typically concludes with landscaping or additional small interior details before the final walk-through. Construction typically requires between 10 months to a year to complete. It is important to find a builder who meets your needs. The National Association of Home Builders (nahb.org) suggests asking your local home builders association for a list of active local builders. Then, research the builders online or in your local newspaper to get a feel for the type of work they do. Consulting with a local realtor or asking friends or relatives for recommendations are other ways to find builders in your desired area. Don’t forget to ask builders for references from recent (and older) clients. Ask if they have a financing program and if you can see any homes they are in the process of building. If they do not give details to you in writing, be sure to take careful notes. Look for value and quality in a custom builder’s work, from the types of cabinetry installed to details like the quality of the trim work and paint. A residential architect works on projects of all scopes and sizes. She can help choose the right location and eliminate possible problems from even the smallest decisions or plan modifications. Similarly, an interior designer can help guide the process in terms of aesthetics. On the one hand, it’s delightful to
60
February 2018
choose any kind of flooring in the world. On the other hand, you’ll also need to choose lighting, faucets, door handles, paint colors, tile, toilets, and so on—and most of us are ill-equipped to make good, coordinating, costeffective choices the first time around. Interior designers can help with all of these decisions. One thing that is hard for homeowners to determine is how much it might cost to make changes along the way. If you request a change before product is ordered or pertinent structural work is done, many builders will not charge additional fees. Other changes can be more costly, especially if demolition is required. Good communication is key, and frequent visits to the build site can help you stay apprised of the progress. There are a few ways to finance a custom-built home, such as paying cash, paying cash for the lot and financing the construction, or financing everything with a down payment of 20–25 percent. Once you have a total budget for the build, your building team will work with you to determine where that money will go. According the Federal Trade Commission (consumer.ftc.gov), homebuilders “generally offer limited coverage on workmanship and materials relating to various components of the home.” This is known as a warranty. It is important to understand the warranty offered, as well as the coverage duration, which typically varies between one and 10 years. Some states allow subcontractors or suppliers to file a mechanic’s lien against your home if they are not paid. The FTC advises that you “protect yourself by asking the contractor, and every subcontractor and supplier, for lien release or lien waiver.” It might not be tomorrow, but you could wake up next year in your dream home, just the way you like it. Golf and Spa Do It Your Way in the California Desert By Jackie Williams
Many of us live in a place that is pretty chilly during the winter. The holiday season’s hustle and bustle have finally come to an end, the cold has settled in, and it is time to unwind! My recommendation this month is to head to Southern California’s desert for some golfing and spa treatments—some quality R & R. When I was younger, the only people I knew who went to the Palm Springs/Palm Desert area were older people, so I was never really interested. When I finally went on my own, I saw for myself how great the area is, and I wished I had gone sooner! There is so much to see and do for every age group and style of travel. There are wonderful family-friendly properties and activities, as well. The winter and spring are perfect times to experience the fantastic weather and play outside in the sunshine. If you are a golf lover, this is a great place to take a vacation! On a recent trip, my husband and I went to Rancho Mirage and stayed at the Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa. It was the first resort I have ever stayed at that had domestic animals living on the property. They have a pet adoption program in the reception area: They keep a dog in a gated area, where guests and their kids can play with it, feed it, and even take it out for walks. Near one of the outdoor pools, there is an area with huge
NOW HIRING
rabbits and turtles (with petting and feeding hours available). They even have bees to harvest honey! I was really impressed with how the hotel encourages their guests to stop and view the scenery and animals. There are posted signs that list what types of birds or fish you will see from that spot around the property. The Westin has two golf courses to choose from: Pete Dye Resort Course and Gary Player Signature. Women’s and couple’s clinics are very popular here. The relaxed dress code helps less experienced players feel more comfortable and decide to golf even if they hadn’t originally planned to take part. I had a lesson with Barry, a veteran instructor, and I felt right at home with his relaxed style of teaching. I would definitely do it again. I can feel my golf game easily improving by following his tips. It is a common sight to have groups of women coming in for golf clinics. ›››

Of course, I also visited the spa. How can you not? After golfing, opt for the “Hole-in-One Golf Massage” to work out those kinks and sore spots. Soaking in the outdoor hot tub and sitting in the steam room were also highlights of our trip. On my next visit, I want to try one of their honey treatments. Some people search for a “Top Ten List” of places to stay, but I feel there are too many great properties in the desert to narrow it down! The area is constantly changing, with upgrades, remodels, and new properties opening every year. Staying in a resort covers everything: a nice room, good restaurants, golfing and other activities, a spa, and plenty for the kids to do, if you bring the family along. I’ve also been to the nearby Marriott Shadow Ridge Village, which has similar amenities. Wherever you choose to stay in the desert, you can rest assured that you will be near beautiful golf courses and terrific spas. Speaking of spas, there are a wealth of health and wellness spas available in the desert. You can easily book treatments and packages at a resort, hotel, or day spa. Most spas focus on holistic treatments, but others focus on medical treatments. You will definitely be able to find a spa that caters to your particular needs and wants. The desert is also a great place to go for rehabilitation after a surgery or procedure—you can enjoy your time here, pampered and looked after, while you heal and rest. There are high and low seasons to consider, but, if you book through a travel agent, I wouldn’t worry about how far in advance to book (except during the very busy Coachella Festival in the middle of April). There are currently direct flights to Palm Springs from 18 different airports, with Los Angeles and San Diego as nearby options, as well. Pack your bags and head south to California’s desert for some warmth, sunshine, sports, and spas! Your travel agent will be waiting for your call. Omaha Gun Club Elite Shooting Range Emphasizes Safety By Marge Shoemaker
Do you own a gun and wish you had somewhere great to improve your shooting skills? Have you been thinking about getting a gun but don’t know where to start? Recent polls indicate that 32 percent of women live in a household with a gun and 12 percent of women own a gun themselves. According to a 2013 Pew Research Center Poll, women choose to own guns for a variety of reasons: 43 percent of women cited protection as their primary reason for owning a gun, 26 percent cited hunting, and 31 percent noted other reasons. Clearly, many American women are taking gun ownership seriously. Bob Buscher, Sr.; Bob Buscher, Jr.; and Jim Mainelli are seasoned gun owners: Jim has a military background, and they all are hunters and are lifetime members of the National Rifle Association. A few years ago, they became aware of many new gun owners in the metropolitan area. That realization, combined with the number of existing gun owners, made them think that the Omaha market could support an elite shooting range. In January of 2014, they started thinking about how they could accomplish that. They started looking for a centrally located, easily accessible property. The former Cinema Center building near 84th and West Center Road, which had been vacant for many years, was available. It provided an ideal location, with ample parking and over 50,000 square feet of space… room enough to grow. The result is Omaha Gun Club: a large, welcoming facility staffed with friendly people. Noelle Buscher (wife of Bob, Jr.) has been involved in the Omaha Gun Club business planning since day one. She is in charge of creating all printed materials, updating social media and the website, and handling any marketing-related special projects. “We wanted a clean, safe, elite shooting range with lots of training options for any level of shooting experience, from those who have never touched a gun to seasoned veterans who want some specialized training,” Noelle shares. The indoor facility offers shooting ranges of 25 yards and 50 yards…Noelle notes that this is the only indoor 50-yard firearm range in Omaha. A complete archery range is also available. All ranges are fully climatecontrolled and use the best HEPA filtration air-handling system available. Omaha Gun Club offers everything you might need for gun ownership. Through an introductory interview, they discern what you plan to use your gun for and then help you choose a firearm that will suit your needs. They offer one-on-one training for all levels of shooters. Classes are also offered for groups, couples, and families. Noelle enthusiastically notes that the focus on safety
66
February 2018
is one of the reasons she feels Omaha Gun Club stands above the competition. “We emphasize safety…the basic rules of gun safety…at all times. Range Safety Officers (RSOs) are always on duty. We have a full security system, including cameras, in all parts of the building…and that’s just to start,” she smiles. Omaha Gun Club is open to the public. Nonmembers have access to many of the same amenities as members, though some higher-level memberships also include access to a private lounge, range, and locker rooms. Memberships are available for every budget, and each level offers unlimited range time. If you don’t have your own gun, you can rent one from Omaha Gun Club to use at the shooting range. “If you want to purchase a new gun but aren’t sure what you want, you can try out one of the over 50 guns available for rental,” Noelle advises. “The ammo is purchased here at the store.” Membership packages vary. Silver, gold, and platinum levels are available in both single and family membership packages. Each membership requires a one-time initiation fee and a recurring monthly fee. Three corporate memberships are available, with the recurring monthly fee assessed per person. Discounts are offered for active military personnel, veterans, first responders, and seniors (65+). Non-member fees are assessed according to what is used. Regular classes include “Learn to Shoot” (perfect for first-time shooters), “One-onOne Training” (at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels), and “Nebraska Concealed Carry” (a handgun permit course). All instructors are NRA- and USCCAcertified. Jeff Hoenshell is the director of education. In addition to shooting ranges and education, Omaha Gun Club offers a retail store, a well-lit parking lot, meeting/party rooms, and Wi-Fi access. Omaha Gun Club is open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., seven days a week. (Hours are adjusted for major holidays.) Special events are offered for women, leagues, youth, couples, families, and seniors. Pistol matches and interactive competitions are also available periodically. Omaha Gun Club is located at 2828 South 82nd Avenue, in Omaha. They can be reached by phone at 402-934-9500 or by email at info@omahagunclub.com. For more information, visit them online at omahagunclub.com.

The Green Thumb
Gardeners, Start Your Engines! Spring Has Almost Sprung By Sharon Knierim
If you’re anticipating that first day of spring, you do not have long to wait now. Can you believe that those first warm days are just around the corner? For some of us, it feels like an eternity since we were out of doors, digging in the dirt, planting new crops with seeds and young plants, and maintaining that garden in which we have so much pride. For others, the winter has seemed short, and we wonder where the time has gone as we put on our gardening clothes and head out for another growing season. Whichever type of gardener you find yourself to be, there is not much time left before we are all active again, so we should think about starting our engines! When we think about gardening tools, our thoughts turn to the hoe and rake. Of course, we have to remember where we put our favorite bypass trimmers and trowels, too. Whether your tools are modern, technical models or family heirlooms that have been in use for a hundred years, you need to make sure they’re in tip-top shape and ready for another season before you venture out into the garden. The end of winter is a terrific time to perform an inspection on the metal components and the wooden parts of any and all tools. Check for sharpness of blades—injuries can and do happen when we attempt to use tools that are dull or rusty. Tools that need repair or are
substandard are also less efficient. This year, you might want to treat yourself to a new gardening utensil or power tool. If making new purchases, do not be fooled by some of the gizmos on the market that do not work and are a waste of both your time and cash. Let common sense prevail when adding to your inventory. If an item seems too good to be true, it probably is. Leave those things on the store shelves and make an investment that will truly make a difference to your time in the garden. Have you checked the lawn mower and the electric hedge trimmer? How about the leaf blower and gas-fed trimmer? It is best to be sure that everything is in proper working order before you need your tools. There is nothing more frustrating

than heading out to work in the yard and discovering too late that a part needs to be replaced or a belt has to be ordered before you can use your devices. As the Boy Scouts remind us, we should always be prepared. If you are a gardener who uses chemicals in the garden and on the grass, now is a good time to stock up on these items. Before purchasing, be sure you understand the side effects of using these chemicals. Have they been approved for general use, or do they require locking up the children and the puppy for a week so that the young ones are not exposed to them? Today, many chemicals used in the environment are much safer than what was available in the past, but caution is always recommended. If, on the other hand, you are into natural fertilizers and plant therapy, do a bit of studying and refresh your knowledge before you head out to purchase any items you might need. Of course, the most important tool in gardening is the gardener herself. Just like the tools and implements we use to complete gardening tasks, we should be in the best possible physical shape when gardening season begins. February and early March is an excellent time to restock your gardening wardrobe. I’m not recommending any designer threads, but you should have a durable wardrobe of shorts, shirts, long-sleeved tops, and trousers that can carry you from March through October or November. Clothing should be comfortable and breathable. Try not to wear clothing that is too loose (it could snag on something and cause injury) or too tight (for obvious reasons). Don’t forget sensible shoes! Sturdy, comfortable shoes are an important part of keeping safe in the garden. Now can be a fun time to put together a basket of accessories, such as gardening gloves and sunscreen as well as insect repellent and visors or hats. If you’re accident-prone, you might want to add some first aid items like bandages to your garden basket. Gardeners, get ready to start your engines. Spring is just around the corner, waiting to be sprung! Editor’s Note: Sharon Knierim has been a Master Gardener since 2003 through Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. She lives on a small farm in Western Iowa and looks forward to sharing her passion for gardening each month with her green-thumbed reader friends. WE February 2018

The Love of a Therapy Dog Companionship for Those Who Need It Most By Elizabeth French
Animals can have a profound effect on the physical and mental well-being of people. Dogs, in particular, motivate their companions to be active and get outdoors, which can lead to improvements in strength and social contact and decreases in blood pressure, heart rate, and stress hormones. For many people, engaging with a dog releases the hormones associated with happiness, such as endorphins, dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin. Therapy dogs are specifically trained to be calm, quiet, and docile under any conditions, giving anchor to those who find themselves lost at sea in everyday life. There are important differences between service dogs, emotional support dogs, and therapy dogs. According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a service dog is “individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability.” This might include guiding a blind person, alerting a deaf person to sound, pressing elevator buttons, retrieving dropped items, or alerting an autistic person to distracting repetitive movements. Service animals, when working, are guaranteed entry into any place that the public can enter. Emotional support animals (ESAs) are pets that provide vital emotional support to owners with mental illnesses like anxiety, depression, or PTSD. These pets have no particular training, but the owner may obtain a letter from her therapist to identify her need for the ESA. Such a letter does not guarantee the pet the federal protections afforded to a service animal, but many municipalities have regulations allowing greater access (check with your local government). Therapy dogs are pets that are trained and certified to provide emotional support and affection to members of the public. Though they provide an invaluable service and may well help people manage conditions like depression or anxiety, they are not considered service animals by the ADA unless they are trained to perform specific tasks to support a person with a disability. There are many types of therapy dogs. A therapeutic visitation dog is a household pet that is brought into facilities such as hospitals, nursing homes, detention facilities, and rehabilitation centers to bring comfort to those living away from home. Disaster relief dogs bring a furry friend to those in need after a traumatic event such as a natural disaster or a mass shooting. Just a short encounter with these loving animals is a reminder that unconditional love still exists during a difficult time. Facility therapy dogs often remain in residence at the nursing homes they serve. These gems may be specially trained to keep patients with memory impairments from getting lost. Animal-assisted therapy dogs are meant to assist in the recuperation of patients after an injury. The dog may assist with common tasks while helping patients regain their strength, helping them prepare to return to caring for their own pets. Reading therapy dogs provide a boost of confidence

to children who struggle with reading. These dogs provide a pair of ears to listen to practicing readers in schools and libraries. Some children feel uncomfortable practicing in front of people and may prefer the non-judgmental audience that a canine companion can provide. Some counselors also work with therapy dogs in their practices; a dog may help a reticent patient open up during a session. A therapy dog must be docile, enjoy the touch of humans, be comfortable in boisterous and stressful environments, and not shed excessively. Some breeds are quicker to learn and more likely to have a calm demeanor. The best small breeds for therapy, according to CompanionAnimals.org, are the Chihuahua, corgi, French bulldog, pug, King Charles spaniel, dachshund, bichon frise, beagle, Yorkie, and Pomeranian. If a larger breed is desired, they recommend a golden retriever, Labrador retriever, German shepherd, greyhound, rottweiler, Saint Bernard, poodle, Great Dane, mastiff, or Bernese mountain dog. With training and dedication, your pet could become a therapy dog. To be certified, the dog must pass the American Kennel Club’s test, which evaluates the skill sets needed by these animals—everything from simple sitting to remaining calm in the face of multiple distractions. Keep in mind that, according to Therapy Dogs International, “A therapy dog is born, not made. Yes, one can teach a dog mannerly behavior, but one cannot change a dog’s inherent temperament.” Before deciding to train your dog for therapy work, ask yourself if your dog is truly a good candidate. Once you’ve decided to put your pet through the training and testing process, it can take upwards of six months to prepare you and your dog for evaluation. If you believe you could benefit from the companionship of a therapy dog, talk to your doctor or therapist about your needs. The unconditional love of these rare dogs can mean the world to those going through a period of grief, stress, or loneliness. “I was having problems with vaginal dryness and light incontinence after having a total hysterectomy 10 years ago. Dr. Peterson’s office recommended the FemTouch Laser treatment. It was painless and quick. I have finished all three treatments, and very pleased with my results! The dryness is gone and I was able to run outside without worry.”

Positive Perspective
Are You Taking Life Way Too Seriously? Laughter is the Answer! I’ve concluded that many of us—myself included—are taking life way too seriously. We walk around with frowns on our faces, hurrying to reach our next appointment or get our next task accomplished. We have an opinion about everything—whether it is any of our business or not. We find ourselves getting into political “discussions” (i.e., arguments) and religious “conversations” (i.e., arguments.) How did this happen? Just a short while ago, we were focused on what we appreciated in life, how many blessings we had, how happy we were! Well, we could blame the media. (Blame always feels better than guilt!) We could blame our bosses. We could blame our spouses. “If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn’t sit for a month.” —Unknown Oh, so maybe we need to take responsibility and kick ourselves in the pants? The problem with this approach is that the last thing we need right now is to beat up on ourselves. After all, we wouldn’t kick another human being when they were down, would we? Why do we think it’s okay to beat up on ourselves? But what do we do? If we don’t get ourselves out of this funk, we may actually go crazy! “If we couldn’t laugh, we would all go insane.” —Jimmy Buffett

Ah, the magic potion—laughter! Why do we so often forget this remedy? Whenever I find myself taking life way too seriously, I look back over the previous several weeks and realize that there has been very little laughter happening. I’ve been rushing, pushing, arguing—but hardly a smile or a giggle in the midst! Before I know what has happened, I’ve lost my sense of humor and then everything goes to heck! “Laughter gives us distance. It allows us to step back from an event, deal with it and then move on.” —Bob Newhart Being able to let go and laugh gives us the bridge to getting to where we want to be—that place that we were, not so very long ago. Laughter is the path that allows us to let go of our exaggerated sense of self importance—so we don’t have to take life so seriously. Laughter is the answer! Still not convinced? I’ll end with this: “We would like to leave you with this very clear knowing that we hold: You are just a few laughs away from letting a whole lot of good stuff in. You are just a few kisses away from letting a whole lot of good stuff in. You are just a little bit of relief away from letting a whole lot of good stuff in.” —Abraham/Hicks
