Wedding Thanks My son, Adam, married his longtime girlfriend, Sam, this past September 22nd. I promised last month that I would give you a report on the wedding, and I’m happy to do so. The weather had been “iffy” for two weeks leading up to the big day. They had chosen an outdoor wedding at the Green Gables Inn in Murdock, Nebraska, about 40 minutes from Omaha. This delightful Airbnb was the ideal venue for Adam and Sam’s wedding. It was absolutely beautiful—very laid-back and relaxing! It was a bit chilly for the rehearsal dinner on Friday night, but by the time guests began to arrive at 3 p.m. on Saturday, it was 72 degrees, sunny, and absolutely perfect! I was talking with Marie, the owner of the Green Gables Inn, and she told me that this was the most perfect day for a wedding they had ever had at the Green Gables Inn. Adam has quite a bit of Irish blood in him—it must have been the luck of the Irish! Kathy and Tom Taylor, the mother and father of the bride, hosted a wonderful experience for family and friends. Since this was an outdoor wedding, they had to have everything brought to the site: tent, tables, chairs, dance floor, bars, silverware, dishes…you name it! It was quite an undertaking, but they pulled it off! They must have worked their tails off. Thank you so much, Kathy and Tom! Sam looked absolutely beautiful in her wedding gown, and Adam was a very handsome groom in the chic suit he chose. The wedding party was small but perfect for Adam and Sam. My granddaughters, Savannah (junior bridesmaid) and McKenna (flower girl), were beautifully decked out. My two-year-old nephew, Fox, was the ring bearer. Their aunt Teresa Albracht had done everyone’s hair, and Amber McClelland, Adam’s cousin, had done the makeup. The bride and groom and wedding party were stunning! Thank you to Teresa and Amber for helping everyone look so beautiful! Adam and Sam have been together for 11 years. It was quite touching to see the two of them tie the knot. Now, the big day is over, and life goes on. I know that life flies by in the blink of an eye. As a newly married couple, they will have challenges to face. Yes, I realize they’ve been together for a long time, but being married is just different. My wedding wish for them is that they love each other, respect each other, laugh together, learn together, and grow together. This will create a healthy relationship! Happy Thanksgiving, all! We’ll talk next month.

From the Runway to Real Life Your Fall and Winter Trend Report

By Holly Bell

Returning from a late fall vacation that included shopping in six states and putting together a fall televised fashion show has made me acutely aware of what is really going on in the stores for fall trends in 2018. Many of the top runway styles are tweaked to make them more wearable for the everyday person. I am happy to say that there is something fresh for everyone this year. Leather (and vegan leather) is huge this season. Along with the expected leather outerwear, stylish separates are featured in stores this fall. There is a smorgasbord this season in beautiful black, but you’ll also see colorful shades of neutrals and jewel tones. Leather pants feature a high waistline this year, which makes legs look long and sleek. Leather skirts in every length and cut are in stores now, and they’re a must-have this season. They are warm, slimming, and go with absolutely everything! I am a strong advocate of this chic trend. Designers love to reference past seasons, and this year is no different. A 1970s vibe is alive and well with fabulous fun prints. They are eye-catching in stores, in rich shades of burgundy and dark turquoise, mustard paired with gray, and other interesting combinations. Prints are eclectic and artistic, with a light-hearted touch. A lot of women are afraid to wear prints, but this is the year to try them on! Prints can camouflage perceived figure flaws and bring out your personality. My favorite print combination is a dark background floral. Elegant in a dress and classy in a long skirt, these feminine prints are pure flattery. Tall boots are still the rage this year and make every outfit look sophisticated. This is the year to be a wild thing. Although I consider it a classic, animal print reached its peak popularity in the 1980s. This year may surpass that. I saw animal print galore in virtually every store. I am rejoicing, as this is one of my favorite patterns. The standard leopard print is popular, of course, but I also saw tiger, snake, and various patterns that mix in animal prints along with others. Needless to say, keeping it simple is the key when wearing an animal print. For example, with an animal print coat or jacket, wear a tailored white blouse along with your favorite denim jean. To really play it safe, pair an animal print with all black. Still bashful of this trend? Top your solids with an animal print scarf. There’s no need to worry about matching any color. Animal print goes with everything! It looks edgier when worn with red, denim, or any blues or greens. There is nothing more chic and more fun than an animal print shoe. You will find them in flats, mules, and boots. These would be perfect to wear with your new black leather pants! Tweed and plaid are staples every fall. This year, you will find plaids done in interesting new color combinations. Menswear-

Apparel = Jewelry Polish Pottery utify Bea inspired houndstooth and pinstripes are timeless favorites. There is one style trend I noticed that I want to pass on to you. If you are wearing a classically styled shirt, add a little femininity to it by tucking in the front and leaving the back tail out. (This is also a great way to show off a tailored basic belt that has an interesting buckle.) Worn this way, a tailored shirt looks particularly stylish and shows off your waistline, but it still looks more polished than wearing the shirt completely untucked. There are also some trends carrying over from last year that designers and customers can’t seem to live without. The interesting sleeve is still very much a part of 2018 trends, along with velvet. Lace and insets of lace are still in vogue. You can pair lace with jeans for a modern look; there’s no need to save it for a special occasion. Multi-level skirt lengths are still the rage, mostly shorter in the front and longer in the back. Tame this look with those tall boots you purchased last year. I was pleasantly surprised by what was offered in the stores I visited throughout the Midwest and the South on my ultimate fall shopping trip. There was a fresh look about the fall styles but still a comfortable familiarity. There is definitely something for everyone this year, no matter your size, your age, or your style. My advice is to go shopping and enjoy the fabulous feeling of a new, stylish outfit! She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE

Serve with wheat crackers or veggies. Drunken Cranberries In a medium saucepan, combine 1 package of rinsed cranberries, 1 cup of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of fresh orange zest. Stir and bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer until the berries pop. Remove from heat and add 1/4 cup of brandy and 2 Tablespoons of fresh orange juice. Stir and refrigerate. Thanksgiving Cornbread Whisk together 1 1/4 cups of yellow cornmeal, 1/2 cup of flour, 1 1/2 Tablespoons of sugar, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Lightly mix in 1 1/4 cups of milk, 2 Tablespoons of melted butter, and 1 large egg. Stir well but do not overmix. Pour into a greased 8-inch baking pan or a cast iron skillet. Bake at 375 degrees for 25–30 minutes. Parmesan Shrimp In a large frying pan, sauté 4 pieces of diced bacon or pancetta until crispy. Add 4 diced scallions and 2 cloves of minced garlic, then cook for another 3 or 4 minutes. Add 24 large shrimp (de-veined, tail on) and cook for 3 minutes, until shrimp are opaque. Add 1/4 cup heavy cream or crème fraîche and bring to a simmer. Lower the heat and add 2 Tablespoons of fresh lemon juice and salt and pepper to taste. Cook for another minute. Transfer the shrimp to a serving platter and sprinkle with 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese and a bit of chopped spinach.

Turkey Reubens Spread 2 slices (or more, for more sandwiches) of your favorite bread with 1 Tablespoon of Thousand Island salad dressing. Pile with sliced turkey, Swiss cheese, and sauerkraut (optional). Pan-fry until bread is crisp and cheese is melty. Turkey or Chicken Hot Dish Mix together 3 cups of diced cooked turkey (or chicken), 1 cup of cooked rice, 2 cups of bread crumbs, 1/2 cup of diced celery, 1/4 cup of chopped onion, 4 beaten eggs, 2 cups of chicken broth, and 1 Tablespoon of poultry seasoning. Place ingredients into a lightly greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Mix 1 can of cream of mushroom soup with 1/2 can of Carnation milk or half-and-half. Pour over the chicken mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 50–60 minutes. Sweet Potato Au Gratin Peel and thinly slice 2 pounds of sweet potatoes. In a bowl, whisk together 1 1/4 cups of heavy cream, 2 Tablespoons of chopped fresh sage, 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg, and salt and pepper as desired. Begin layering sliced potatoes in a serving/baking dish, dotting with 4 Tablespoons of cubed butter over the potatoes and gradually pouring the cream mixture on top as you layer. Cover with foil and bake at 400 degrees for 1 hour. Pecan Pie Lightly toast 1 1/2 cups of pecans (chopped or whole). Blend together 1 cup of light or dark corn syrup, 1 cup of sugar, 3 beaten eggs, 2 Tablespoons of melted butter, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Add the pecans. Pour the mixture into an unbaked prepared pie crust. Bake on a cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 55 minutes. Cool. WE

Goldsmith Silversmith Decades of Custom Jewelry in the Old Market By Marge Shoemaker

Are you in the market for a custom-designed piece of jewelry? Whether you’re sure about what you want or just have a vague idea, Goldsmith Silversmith is the place to go. Owner Dwaine Ferguson is an artist and an artisan. His creativity shines through in his collection of sketches. “I have notebooks full of sketches,” Dwaine says. “It’s the way I think. I come up with an idea for a design and sketch it out.” His drawing skills, as well as his talent for bringing an idea to life, stem from his studies as an architectural draftsman (that’s the person who draws up plans that others have designed and will build). His ideas come from many different places: nature, fashion, architectural details, customers’ suggestions—anywhere! His passion for jewelry design comes from his own love of jewelry. He especially loves pearls. “I’m known as ‘The Pearl Guy.’ I don’t just buy them…I collect them!” When you go to Goldsmith Silversmith for a piece of custom-designed jewelry, you’ll learn about Dwaine’s creative process. Step one is the conversation. “I like to talk to people,” he asserts. “I learn a lot through casual conversations.” It doesn’t matter where or how or why you got the inspiration for your piece. You can come in with a design you’ve cut from a magazine, a sketch you’ve drawn yourself, an heirloom piece, a loose stone you’ve fallen in love with, or just an idea—whatever you’ve got, Dwaine will come up with something that will make it real. Although he can take cues from other jewelry designs, he points out that copying another design is stealing something from another artist. Don’t let that stop you from bringing in pictures of designs that you love! “I won’t copy a piece that someone else created, but I will find something in the design to meet the customer’s needs,” he says. Step two of Dwaine’s creative process is the sketch. This is simply the process of getting his thoughts and ideas down on paper. He may make a sketch while you chat, or he may need a little time to put your ideas and his into the final presentation. The sketch includes notes on size, shape, color, and other pertinent details. He relates stories of customers who have had him draw a variety of sketches, discarding each…and then deciding that the first one was the right one. Once the customer approves the sketch, Dwaine provides a ballpark price for the finished piece. This price is preliminary and may change after step three, which is the wax carving. Part of designing a piece of jewelry is the creation

12

November 2018

of a mold that can be adjusted. “It’s not wise to Owner Dwaine Ferguson put expensive materials into a test form,” Dwaine cautions, which is why he uses malleable wax for this part of the process. A physical mold of the piece is important because a picture, no matter how true to life, can’t demonstrate how the piece will fit. A ring may be too big for a person’s hand; a pendant or bracelet maybe too chunky for a small person or too delicate for a larger person. If the buyer isn’t comfortable in the piece, Dwaine notes, it won’t get worn. Through the wax carving, the client sees a physical representation of the final design. The piece can be examined for size, fit, and design. This is the time to make adjustments. After approval of the wax carving, the final decisions on stones, metal, color, fittings, and other details will determine the final price of the piece. It’s the last chance for the customer to make changes before commencing step four, which includes casting, polishing, and setting. During these steps, Dwaine often works in concert with the other artisans at Goldsmith Silversmith to execute the design. The finishing steps may take some time, but Dwaine and his staff do everything possible to have your piece ready within the promised time frame. In addition to custom jewelry designed with a particular customer in mind, Goldsmith Silversmith also features many beautiful designs that are already completed. Visit the shop. Look at the items on display. Be amazed at the different shapes, colors, and sizes of pearls available! Ask about an assessment of your own pieces. Don’t step on the cat. Goldsmith Silversmith is located in the Old Market area of Omaha, at 1019 Howard Street. (If the parking spaces out front are taken, you can park in the lot just a block away.) You can reach the store by phone at 402-342-1737. To see a sampling of their designs from home, visit Goldsmith Silversmith online at goldsmithsilversmith.com. WE

A Woman’s Work

The Thoughtful Holiday We Are All Grateful

By Sharon Knierim

It comes at almost every Thanksgiving dinner. You know— that moment when the host or hostess insists we all go around the table and share with everyone what we are truly thankful for. You only get one crack at this each year, and you naturally want your contribution to be outstanding and appreciated. When participating in these marathon responses, I am always grateful to be the first person to name what I consider my biggest blessing. By doing so, I’m off the hook and don’t feel that I have to compete with the folks who must have come prepared with a speech, which, by the way, is always impressive. Their monologues compare to those mimeographed Christmas letters that hail the success of an entire family and often resemble a 1970s TV script. By the time six or seven guests have told us about their blessings, it’s hard not to repeat what has already been said. I have found myself thinking, “Oh, I like that. Maybe I can incorporate that into how we got rid of the dog’s fleas.” Do you ever get the feeling that these little speeches become comparative? When the guy across the table tells us that he’s grateful for getting such a good deal on his new Alfa Romeo,

NOW HIRING

and I am planning to share that we are happy that little Timmy has stopped wetting the bed, it doesn’t seem like we are on the same level. Wouldn’t it be delicious if, one year, we all got naughty and said what we really were thankful for at that very moment? We would probably hear things like, “Thank goodness Aunt Hazel didn’t dry out the turkey this year,” or “Aren’t we all glad that Uncle Iggy couldn’t make it because he always thinks that wearing a lampshade as a hat makes things more festive?” or maybe “We can all raise our glasses to your not bringing your bratty six kids this year.” Sounds mean-spirited, doesn’t it?

Maybe we should not plan on doing that. I think that there is almost nobody who is not thankful for something in their lives. In fact, when you ask people what they are most grateful for, nearly all of them respond with something about their good health or a detail about their close family and loved ones. We seem to be mainly thankful for the basics of life. Everyone who enjoys good health should understand what a blessing that is. Being able to access healthy and nutritious food and clean water should never be taken for granted. The gift of living in a warm and stable home, protected from the elements, is not a blessing that everyone enjoys. Although the kiddos may not agree, having a safe and forward-thinking school is also a bonus for which we should all be thankful. Have you planned what you’ll say this Thanksgiving if you’re asked what you are most thankful for? It might be fine to stop and think about it, even if you are not asked. One day, as I was driving and listening to public radio, I heard about people in another country who were being bombed day and night. Although it wasn’t Thanksgiving Day, I was certainly willing to give thanks that I can drive to the supermarket without much chance of being attacked or kidnapped or blown to bits. Think about it. Here in America, we have much to be thankful for. It is so easy to take these blessings for granted! I am often guilty of that, but it’s an opportunity to rearrange priorities and decide what is really important in our lives. Of course, not everything has to be a big event. Some of the smallest happenings in life are true treasures and gifts to us. If you are hosting the Thanksgiving festivities this year and are contemplating the tradition of letting everyone announce what they’re grateful for, why not change it up a bit? Instead of doing the oral version of this exercise at the table, let everyone write on a slip of paper or index card what they are thankful for. Collect all the cards and drop them into a basket or bowl. Draw them out one at a time, read them to the guests, and let them figure out who wrote each one. It just might happen that people truly enjoy that. Whatever your Thanksgiving plans are, I hope you have a wonderful holiday. This is my favorite holiday of the year, and I am thankful for it. Have a happy Thanksgiving. WE

Vantage Point

Foundation One Bank A Family Bank for Your Family’s Needs By Elizabeth French

At 17445 Arbor Street, Suite 100, Foundation One Bank is conveniently located to provide services to residents of West Omaha—but that’s not all. With 26 employees and three locations throughout the city, Foundation One continues to grow at a steady pace. As they serve more and more customers across the area, their dedication to customer satisfaction does not waver. Foundation One Bank was established in 2009 when Randal J. Burns, President/CEO, and a group of investors purchased Western State Bank in Waterloo, Nebraska. Ann Fuller, a recent addition to the Foundation One team commutes from Glenwood every day because of her passion for Foundation One’s philosophy. Originally from Colorado, Ann chose Foundation One because of its family dynamic, community outreach, and dedication to each individual customer. “You want to work for a bank like that,” she says. In her previous positions as a loan officer with other organizations, Ann says, the process was not so personal. They just had boxes to check for loan applications, and if one of the boxes wasn’t checked, “you’d put it in the computer and it would almost always decline for you.” However, at Foundation One, personal relationships are established between bankers and their clients. This can sometimes mean having extremely candid conversations with clients to help them achieve financial stability or take out a loan. It creates a dynamic of trust and the ability to look at the bigger picture. One aspect of the bank that sets it apart from others is its dedication to the community. “People still need people,” says Molly Merrell, Vice President. Foundation One Bank partners with many charitable organizations on a consistent basis. Even outside of the office, the employees at Foundation One are always giving back. According to Molly, “that’s an expectation for us.” In their daily practice, the employees at Foundation One demonstrate their understanding and dedication to client satisfaction. In fact, Molly notes that the most rewarding part of her job is being a part of the “firsts” in her clients’ lives. This might be something like a client’s first checking account, car loan, or mortgage. In a world where technology rules, Foundation One seeks to remain accessible and keep up with current trends. While younger generations may prefer not to go into a brick-and-mortar building, Foundation One still seeks to establish individual relationships with their clients. “We provide sound advice and make smart decisions for people who

18

live and work here locally,” says Molly. The banking industry is challenging, with banks opening on every corner. To stay on top, Foundation One continues to practice their high level of customer service. “As we grow, our challenge is to find people who share our core beliefs, philosophy, and vision, so that we don’t lose sight of those things,” Molly explains. At Foundation One, their overarching goals are to thrive and to help their customers achieve financial stability, and they believe their dedication to serving everyone in their community is unparalleled. Foundation One wants to be the one-stop shop for all of your banking needs. They understand how frustrating it can be to work with a different person for each different banking service. “It’s kind of a comfort level,” Ann says, “because money is one of the things that people are most private about. Trust is huge when you’re dealing with money. If our clients can tell their story just one time, it establishes that trust factor.” Molly concludes, “We’re relationship-based, not transactionbased. That’s what makes us different.” For a community bank you can trust with all your banking needs, contact Foundation One Bank today at 531-215-0066. For more information on the financial services and advice provided at this community institution, visit them online at foundationonebank.com. WE

Fresh Concept

Investment Strategies for Retirement Live the Retirement You’ll Love By Kylie Gumpert

It should be an incredibly exciting time, but so many of us are completely unprepared for what we work to do our entire lives—retire! According to a 2018 study by insurance company Northwestern Mutual, one in five Americans say they have absolutely nothing saved for retirement, and one in three have less than $5,000 saved. If you don’t have enough money saved to retire, you may have to work longer, and you may not be able to fulfill retirement dreams or even live independently in the future. That definitely paints a grim picture, but there’s still hope. Even if you haven’t been saving for retirement, starting now is going to make your future a whole lot easier to manage. Why are so many Americans financially unprepared for retirement? There are several possible reasons why people don’t save. Some people prioritize paying down their current debt. Some people struggle to pay their current bills and believe they don’t make enough money to save. Some people don’t think they’ll need retirement savings. Some people aren’t saving just because their employers don’t offer a workplace retirement savings plan and they don’t know how else to get started. Some of these reasons are misconceptions, and they can be overcome. If you set aside just $20 a month from age 20 to age 67, you would end up with $80,000. That may not be enough to retire (most experts recommend around $1 million or more), but it demonstrates that saving any amount is better than not saving at all—even if it’s an amount so small that many Americans would overlook it as spare change. Most of us know that the best time to start saving is as soon as possible so that money has more time to grow in a 401(k) retirement account, an individual retirement account (IRA), a pension plan, or even as a stock investment. For those who are late to the saving game, there are often modifications that can be made, such as downsizing and eliminating expenses and bills, to ensure that retirement is a viable option down the road. Planning for retirement should include some forethought, such as how much money you think you’ll be spending (based on how much you spend now), how long you think you will live, and which saving options will produce the return you need. If you are sick or your family history makes it likely that you’ll develop an illness or disease, be sure to consider how medical bills might impact your retirement savings. Depending on your age and family status, it might also be important to consider how much marriage or children could change your savings strategy or the amount you’ll still need to save to stay on track for retirement. Getting started involves making a decision about where you’d like to save your dollars: in an employer’s 401(k) or pension plan, an IRA, a Roth IRA, stocks or bonds, or a mix of these options. Your employer’s 401(k) is often your best bet, as most employers will match up to a certain amount of whatever

20

November 2018

you save (sometimes as a percentage, sometimes as a flat dollar amount). Experts recommend putting in as much as an employer will match because, at the end of the day, that’s free money. Generally, you want to put at least 10 percent of your income toward your 401(k) to reap the most reward over time. Still, there are limits to how much you can invest each year. In 2018, employees cannot invest more than $18,500 into a 401(k), while employers cannot invest more than an employee’s annual compensation. In total, these contributions cannot exceed $55,000. This is a particularly important point for older people who have not already been saving sufficiently and would like to put higher amounts of money in an account now to “catch up.” Another great reason to get started saving with your employer’s plan, no matter what kind of plan your employer offers, is that some saving is always better than no saving at all.You can always begin saving in your employer’s plan and then move your money elsewhere if you decide a different type of investment will work better for you. Pension plans are not commonly offered these days because they are seen as significantly riskier than the now-popular 401(k). With pensions, employees do not have control over investments, but their employer promises to provide a certain monthly income once the employees retire. An IRA is an option you can pursue if your employer does

www.womensedition.com

not offer a retirement savings option or if you want to save beyond the limits of your 401(k) plan. The annual contribution limit is $5,500 ($6,500 for those age 50 and older, to give them an opportunity to catch up, if necessary). Depending on your situation, a Roth IRA may be recommended because the money is invested post-tax. This means that when it comes time to take money out of the account for retirement, no tax is owed. This is unlike other retirement plans, which offer an annual tax break so that money can grow more quickly over time but require that those taxes are paid back when dollars are withdrawn. Diversity is key in investing and minimizing risk, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you need to be choosing individual companies to invest in. A passively managed index fund can be a great choice for retirement saving. These funds buy all the stocks in a major market index (like the S&P 500 or the Dow Jones Industrial Average), in the same proportion that they appear in the index. The fund then passively holds those stocks without making any attempt to trade them to improve performance. Having just one index fund may sound like you’re putting all your eggs in one basket, but you’re really not—these indexes contain all of the major companies in the United States, so you’re really investing in many different and successful companies at once. An index fund will provide the same investment return as the American market at large, so it’s a pretty solid bet. To get started with a 401(k), you’ll need to work with your employer to determine how aggressive you want your portfolio to be, what their match offer is, how long you would need to stay in the plan to receive payout, and how much money you’d like to contribute. Target-dated funds, which adjust their mix of stocks and bonds to be less aggressive as the participant ages, are a common choice and are often a reasonable place to get started saving.

To get started with an IRA or Roth IRA, you’ll need to work with a bank, a mutual fund company, or a brokerage firm to open an account. Some companies may require a certain deposit amount to get started, while others have no limit for opening an account. From there, you’ll need to figure out your investment strategy, including how much you’d like to put into your account as well as the portfolio of stocks and bonds that you’d like to purchase. You can work with a broker who can help select funds that are appropriate for your needs or lean on a “robo-investor” that will digitally form your portfolio based on how you answer questions about your age and retirement goals. You can also work with a broker or “roboinvestor” to invest in stocks or bonds outside of a 401(k) or IRA. For a fee, financial advisors can help you navigate plan or investment limits, qualifications, terms or agreements, and overall portfolio diversification so that you aren’t left alone to sort it all out. While actively managed funds won’t necessarily bring better investment returns, some expert advice can be a great asset to someone who is just starting to save for retirement, who doesn’t know much about the process, or whose investment situation is complicated. Once a year, you should check on your investments or have a meeting with your broker to make sure things are looking the way you want them to. Saving for retirement can sound like a daunting task (and $1 million can sound like a daunting number!), but the hardest part is getting started. Do yourself a favor and make yesterday the last day that you didn’t save for retirement. Call the bank, look for a financial advisor, chat with your employer, or set up an automatic withdrawal today to get started on the path toward the retirement you deserve. Main Street Studios & Art Gallery A Gallery with History

By Elizabeth French

Main Street Studios & Art Gallery is located in the heart of downtown Elkhorn, at 2610 North Main Street. It’s not just a place to view artwork—local artists work in the gallery, explain their process to visitors, and display their work for sale. “We really do have something like an artist co-op,” says owner and operator Tyler Curnes. “I love the concept of Hot Shops in downtown Omaha, but we didn’t really have anything like that in Elkhorn.” Tyler began seeking local artists who had the passion to come into the gallery every day to work and to give visitors an idea of the artistic process. The building’s history is as eclectic as its current occupants. It was built in 1915 as a livery stable along the railroad. “In the 1920s, it was the very first Chevrolet dealership for Nebraska,” Tyler shares. The dealership went under during the Great Depression, so the building was sold to another family. “They had a mechanic’s garage for cars and two pumps outside,

22

November 2018

so they turned it into Elkhorn Propane and Oil Company.” The building stood empty for four decades until Tyler bought and remodeled it in October 2014. The gallery is now a stunning celebration of its own history. A garage door sports multiple windows from the days of being a car dealership and garage, while massive wooden beams and high ceilings remain from its days as a livery stable. Even the cement floors pay homage to the building’s history as a Chevrolet dealership. All of the art in the gallery is made in-house by five unique artists with unique talents. Tyler works

with glass. He discovered his interest in glass-blowing when he spent a summer in Europe during college and met a glass-blower there. Working with glass takes extreme patience, he explains, because of the amount of time it takes to heat and cool. One piece, in fact, had to stay in the kiln for an astonishing 560 hours at 900 degrees! David Biehl, a sculptor who creates all his bronzes in-house, was a veterinarian for 40 years. Currently, he is working on a life-sized statue of Miguel Keith, an 18-year-old soldier who was killed in Vietnam after saving his entire platoon. After approximately 300 hours of work, the statue will be erected in South Omaha, where Miguel grew up. David has a passion for history and loves the stories behind each piece he creates. He also wrote a historical account about a bronze he did of the Martin brothers, one of his favorite stories to tell. While running from Native Americans on horseback, he says, “these two boys got hit with four arrows. One of the arrows hit one boy on the back and stuck into his brother’s back and pinned the two of them together. They both lived.” Artist Levent Oz, otherwise known as “The Silver of Oz,” has been working with silver and gold for over 30 years. Growing up working in an antique store, he began working with vintage jewelry in his youth and enjoyed making his own pieces from silver and gold. From hand-wrapped arrowheads to custom pieces, Levent provides an “unusual place for unusual jewelry” for those looking to expand their collections of custom jewelry. In

fact, Tyler’s mother had purchased Levent’s jewelry in the past. When Tyler established Main Street Studios, he immediately called Levent to join the group. Ashley Spitsnogle is the newest artist to join Main Street Studios. She specializes in oil painting. She loves using local themes, and she paints a live bovine subject every year at the Cattlemen’s Ball. Ashley produces pieces of art that commemorate important moments in Husker history and is licensed to do so by the Huskers. She also does commissions, does live painting for up to four hours at a time, and creates hand-painted wine glasses that are perfect for gift-giving. When asked about her chosen medium, Ashley says, “I like oil, but it takes forever,” referring to the amount of time a painter must wait for a piece to dry. A canvas must sit for days before she can even go back to make corrections or changes, and it takes more than a week for a finished piece to dry. Jane Kathol completes the group of five at Main Street Studios and has known Tyler for over 20 years. Jane is an art teacher in the Elkhorn schools, and she comes to work in the studio every afternoon. Jane creates Jackson Pollock– inspired acrylic abstracts that constantly grab the attention of visitors. A great portion of her work also features colorful florals and elaborate skylines—she loves the Nebraska plain. For more information about Main Street Studios & Art Gallery, drop by downtown Elkhorn or call 402-452-3088. You can find them online at mainstreetstudios2610.com. WE

Healthy Living

Pedodontics, PC Helping Kids Love Their Smiles By Marge Shoemaker

The pediatric dentists at Pedodontics, PC, make sure their business lives up to its name by providing caring orthodontics and dentistry for young people. Amanda Snyder, DDS; Lisa Strunk, DDS, MS (in pediatric dentistry), MS (in orthodontics); and Carmen Dana, DDS, MS (in pediatric medicine); strive to create and maintain beautiful, healthy smiles in an upbeat and relaxing atmosphere. They treat children and young adults with the attitude that “kids are people, too.” Dr. Amanda has been a part of Pedodontics, PC, for a long time. When she was a child, the office was under the direction of Dr. Frank Driscoll, and Dr. Amanda was a patient! She explains that the positive experiences she had growing up encouraged her interest in dentistry. “I want the kids who are our patients today to have the same positive experience I had,” she states. Cheerful colors, open design, and plenty of natural light encourage a feeling of relaxation. To one side of the entrance is a children’s playroom that is designed like a small cottage, and it’s very popular with patients and their families. “My kids head

26

straight for the playroom when we arrive,” says Liz, The Pedodontics, PC, team whose two children are patients of Dr. Amanda’s. “They always want to come early to make sure they have time to play before their appointments.” While parents are busy talking to the staff, the children can play…windows in the room allow supervision from the desk. There are also tables and chairs available where older children and parents can keep busy with magazines while waiting. One colorful wall of the waiting room is dedicated to sayings, facts, and advice related to dentistry and the positive power of smiles. “Smiles are our passion,” begins the wall, and the positivity continues from there: “A smile is a curve that sets everything straight; everyone smiles in the same language; a smile can

www.womensedition.com

brighten the darkest day; laughter is a smile that bursts!” Are you smiling yet? Dr. Amanda knows that many kids (and adults) harbor feelings of fear about visiting a dentist. “Movies and television often portray a visit to the dentist as something to dread,” she acknowledges. “We recognize that fear is real. We want to make the patient as comfortable as possible.” To accomplish this, she and the other staff talk with patients and parents about the upcoming process, making sure each young patient understands what is going to happen. No surprises! “It’s truly rewarding to see kids overcome their fear,” she shares. Preparation is especially important for patients with special needs, whether they have developmental disabilities or have endured a previous bad experience with a dentist. For example, if a patient who needs Novocain is particularly afraid of needles, they can begin with a topical anesthetic or relaxation techniques—including gas, if necessary—to get the procedure done safely. “Of course, the depth of explanation depends on the age of the patient, but we always explain to patients what we are doing and assure them that the process will be over before they know it.” The important thing with young patients, Dr. Amanda stresses, is establishing trust. This is especially true for patients who are particularly fearful. “We endeavor to work as a team—patient, parents, and practitioners.”

Teamwork with parents is also important in helping children establish good oral habits. Here, too, the Smiles Wall comes into play. One of the most compelling lines states, “The tooth is the only part of the body that cannot heal itself!” That leads to, “Visit the dentist at least twice a year for professional cleaning to maintain your beautiful smile!” When parents understand the importance of good oral hygiene, they are more apt to make sure their children have the regular check-ups that can prevent oral problems in the future. Parents are also warned that sportsrelated injuries account for about 5,000,000 (that’s five million!) lost teeth per year. Protecting children’s teeth— and your own—with an appropriate mouth guard can help you avoid some potentially serious repair work. Another part of parent and patient education includes the advice to limit sugary drinks and snacks. (A very enlightening display inside the examination area shows how much sugar is in some common drinks.) Children (and adults) should brush at least in the morning and at night and should floss regularly. It’s never too early to start your child on the path to a lifetime of good oral health! As Dr. Amanda reminds us, “the newborn who greets the world with an open-mouthed cry already has teeth growing in those pink gums.” Pedodontics, PC, is located at 2521 South 119th Street, in Omaha. Good Looks

Seeing Clearly The Latest in Eyewear

By Loretta McCollum

Not long ago, those of us who needed corrective eyewear were often considered clumsy, frumpy, nerdy, or awkward. Wearing glasses did nothing for one’s social life. Those weighty, burdensome “Coke bottle” lenses were continually being pushed up and creating nose craters. Fear not, my near-sighted, far-sighted, astigmatic comrades! The labels of clumsy, frumpy, nerdy, and awkward have been replaced with cool, flattering, notable, and attractive. Today’s eyewear functions as a fashion accessory. With the multitude of colors and styles available, your glasses can match your personality, your wardrobe, or both, with limitless options. Frame components are better than ever, and designers like Calvin Klein, Armani, Prada, Michael Kors, Chanel, and Coach, to name a few, produce eyewear lines. Let’s start by learning the three types of eyecare professional: optometrists, ophthalmologists, and opticians. You will most likely visit at least two of these professionals in your eyewear quest, depending on your needs. What’s the difference? An optometrist is a doctor of optometry who performs eye exams and prescribes glasses and contact lenses. Optometrists diagnose eye conditions like glaucoma and cataracts, and they can prescribe medication. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who attended medical school and then did a medical residency in the area of ophthalmology. They can perform many of the same functions as optom-

etrists, but, unlike optometrists, they can perform eye surgeries and treat serious eye conditions. Finally, there is the optician. This individual prepares and dispenses lenses and frames. Opticians are not eye doctors, and they cannot write prescriptions, but they are the key to well-fitting, flattering frames with the correct lenses. Those Coke bottle lenses were heavy and thick because they were actually made of glass. Most of today’s lenses are plastic. They are light and thin, impact-resistant, and can correct vision better than ever before. Lenses are not one-size-fits-all! Lens choice is dependent upon several factors, including prescription and lifestyle. Many people over age 40 need multi-focal lenses (either bifocals or trifocals), but gone are the days of that telltale line in the lens. The transition is now seamless and invisible to the naked eye. Many lenses now have a scratch-resistant coating and ultraviolet protection built in. If your lenses don’t, it’s worth the extra cost ›››

to add them. Even newer plastics can get scratched, and ultraviolet protection helps decrease the risk of cataracts. Anti-reflective coating is helpful for those who spend a great deal of time at a computer or who have issues with night glare. Like lenses, frames have come a long way, baby! Today’s frames are typically constructed from metals, plastics, or a combination of both. Titanium lenses are lightweight, durable, corrosion-resistant, and available in many colors. Graphite frames are also lightweight and are known for both durability and flexibility, making them an excellent choice for an active lifestyle. Aluminum frames are popular with designers, and beryllium frames are a less costly alternative to titanium. Play lots of sports? Consider nylon frames. Wooden frames are also becoming popular. Modern eyewear is focused on fashion, not just function. Color trends range from bold colors like red, teal, or purple to clears, grays, and soft pastels. Bold and soft shades are often combined. Warm neutrals like honey, caramel, and coffee are in style. Traditional colors like tortoiseshell and black are constants. Frame style and shape trends are a mix of retro and contemporary, of bold and understated. Tortoiseshell cat’s eye frames are in, as are black frames (rectangular for men, round for women). Big and bold is trendy, as is transparent, light, and thin. Oversized square frames and classic aviator glasses are also fashionable. Consider your facial features when selecting frames. Wide frames flatter a full face, while thin, round frames soften the angles of a square face or shorten a long face. Angular, narrow frames complement the soft features of a round face, and bottom-heavy frames balance a heartshaped face. The oval face is fortunate to look good in just about any frame. After you’ve chosen the ideal frames, you want to make sure they fit properly. This is where opticians really shine. They help with frame selection, but it’s also their role to ensure that your glasses fit comfortably. Here are some guidelines: The temple of the frame should go straight back, touching just before the ear, not along the side of the head. The stem should be long enough to reach well behind the ear. All (or nearly all) of the frame should touch both sides of the nose, with no gaps. Work with your optician, and your glasses will fit like a glove. Always Thanksgiving The Power of Appreciation Thanksgiving—what a wonderful tradition our forefathers started. They made a decision to take the time to relish in appreciation of all that they had in their lives. “Appreciation of what we have is at least one-half of the true way of life.” —Samuel F. Clarke Appreciation is a very powerful emotion. Think about this. It is impossible to stay in a negative place when we make the decision to focus on appreciation. Anger, depression, fearfulness, anxiety—they cannot stay with us if we decide to shift our attention to appreciation. If we appreciate something—anything—it’s like a “quick fix” to all that ails us! “One of life’s gifts is that each of us, no matter how tired and downtrodden, finds reasons for thankfulness: for the crops carried in from the fields and the grapes from the vineyard.” —J. Robert Moskin When our energy shifts, we are able to see things from a different perspective. From this new vantage point, we are able to find new answers to the challenges we are facing. We are able to begin creating a new experience of reality in our lives. We will begin to feel a whole lot better—emotionally, physically, mentally, and

By Janet Van deWalle

spiritually! That is a great reason to go on a rampage of appreciation. The challenge, for some of us, is that we have becomes so accustomed to feeling bad that we don’t even know where to begin. We have become so angry, depressed, fearful, or anxious that we struggle to find anything in our lives that we can truly be grateful for. “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.” —Henry David Thoreau Let’s begin by being grateful to the stream of pure positive energy for handling so much of what makes our lives possible. It makes certain that the sun rises in the morning and that the Earth stays in its perfect orbit in the Universe. What this basic appreciation will do is shift our energies. It will provide us with a new starting point in our day. Next will come more thoughts of things to appreciate. It has to happen—it’s the Law of Attraction—the most powerful law in the Universe. The more we put our attention towards something, the bigger it will get. We will find ourselves moving from the basics to more specific experiences/things we are thankful for. Our health. Our relationships. Our freedom. Then, we’ll be on a roll. We will find that it gets easier to stay in this place of appreciativeness and it feels great to be there. What we will find is that we experience every day as Thanksgiving day! WE

I Am Thankful For… The Lessons Left Behind For the past few weeks, I’ve been going through boxes of stuff that’s been in storage for years. I found some real gems! Among these were savings certificates issued by the USPS in 1939, which probably have more value historically than monetarily. Of more personal interest were guest books and sympathy cards from the funerals of family members. The penmanship in these guest books and cards is outstanding! The lesson: It’s a shame that handwriting doesn’t receive the attention in school that it once did. Write more legibly! The most exciting find was a notebook that belonged to my husband’s maternal grandfather. Of great interest was a letter Grandpa wrote to Grandma on first starting his job with the Railway Postal Service. “Today we traveled from Schuyler to Omaha…eight hours. I had to spend $10.00 for a suit…three pieces because I need a vest. There’ll be expenses for room and board at overnight stops. I’ll deposit my pay and send you the receipt.” The real gem was a typed sheet with the lineage of his great-great-grandfather, all the way back to the mid 1700s. His grandfather was the 14th of 15 children. Now we have definite roots for the Adams side of the family. The lesson: Don’t just throw stuff away…go through it! In the collection from Daddy’s funeral, I recognized a lot of the names. I was 20 when he died and was just getting to know him as an adult. The people who took time to attend his funeral and send cards attested to the respect his coworkers held for him. I’ve

By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS

learned more about him over the years as my husband worked with some of the same people. Daddy’s legacy: Be yourself. Treat others as you want to be treated. My younger brother, Doug, died 20 years later at age 34, doing one of the things he loved—mountain climbing. D lived his life doing the things he loved because he enjoyed them, not because others thought he should. He followed his bliss! Mama’s collection included condolences from people who ranged in age from their 20s (not counting her grandchildren) to those in their 80s and 90s (Mama was nearly 104 when she died after living a full life). That age range was there because her sense of curiosity made her interested in everything…and interesting to everyone. She always stayed in touch with the child within. To my husband, people were important because they were people, not because of their position or how much money they had. His legacy is his kindness and helpfulness to others. I’m thankful for the people who have gone before and for those who took the time to pay their respects. I’m doubly thankful for the lessons they left behind. I’m also thankful to all of you who read my ramblings. What are you thankful for? Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

The Future Is Now! Bring Your Home Into the Age of Technology

By Robyn V. Powell

In less than a decade, smartphones have revolutionized our society. How we communicate, manage our finances, and access information has radically changed with the wide adoption of this powerful tool. As technology advances, the next major step forward is fully integrating it into our homes, placing the same seamless management of our home’s systems conveniently at our fingertips. There’s an exciting new trend in digital innovation underway, bringing technologies that deliver connectivity, efficiency, and energy savings. Right now is a great time to explore how transitioning to a smart home gives you a whole new level of control over your surroundings. For most of us, keeping our families safe and our homes secure is priority one. Give your loved ones enhanced protection by installing a home security system that allows doors to be locked, security systems armed, and cameras monitored from the convenience of your smartphone. Alerts sent directly to your phone let you know if anyone enters or departs the home or if any suspicious activity is detected. Video doorbells add another layer of security, allowing you to screen and record guests, check on deliveries, and receive alerts and videos on your phone when motion is detected. Investing in smart technologies can save you money, over time, while enhancing the resale value of your home. Thermostat control, for example, can result in energy bill savings of 10 to 30 percent, quickly paying for the initial equipment and installation costs. Smart systems

provide homeowners with data about their energy use, helping to optimize settings for specific conditions. Remote connectivity allows you to control and adjust the thermostat from your car or while on vacation. You can also control lights and window treatments from a touchpad in your home or from anywhere on your phone. Smart sprinklers simplify lawn and garden care and reduce water consumption. Instead of fixed timers, smart systems rely on sensors to determine watering needs and deliver the right amount of water at the right time. Reduce your water bill and check on your plants from anywhere in the world using mobile or web apps. Programmable fireplaces operate by remote, making your fireplace control more convenient and efficient. Once the room heats to a certain temperature, the fireplace turns itself off. You can enjoy the ease of changing your settings without having to leave the comfort of your sofa! ›››

One of the most revolutionary smart technologies has been the development of voice-controlled devices. Alexa, for example, is a virtual personal assistant developed by Amazon. The smart wireless speaker responds to verbal commands. Managing your calendar; controlling lights, temperature, and appliances; or updating your shopping list are just a few of the ways Alexa can streamline your life. You can ask Alexa to pre-heat the oven, let you know how much time is left in the wash cycle, or operate the remote vacuum cleaner. Managing the operation of home systems with voice control is a game changer for elderly or disabled homeowners, giving them the ability to live independently in their own homes. Alongside the evolution of ever-flatter, ever-bigger TVs, manufacturers have introduced curved-screen sets to the market. Curved sets make a striking visual in a room, but what do they add to the viewing experience? According to experts, curved screens that are 65 inches or larger provide a more immersive viewing experience, adding a cinematic quality that is similar to watching a movie at the theater. Most TVs don’t sound as good as they look, so if your goal is to heighten the cinema experience, investing in enhanced sound quality can be a great option. Streamlined sound bars mounted on the wall or a shelf directly beneath a TV can boost the sound quality and are less expensive than adding a new surround sound system. Sound bars operate by remote and contain several speakers; some even include rear speakers to give you the full surround-sound experience. Alternatively, a total surround sound system requires placing several speakers in different areas of a room to deliver room-filling, cinema-like surround sound from every direction. Having a surround sound system installed can be costly, but they can’t be beat for action movies that are best enjoyed with dynamic surround sound systems—where a subwoofer adds oomph to every explosion and viewers hear every tire squeal. Taking advantage of smart home innovations can make the management of your day-to-day life more convenient and secure. The future is already here, so bring your home along for the ride! Enjoy the many benefits of a more modern and functional living space, whether you’re at home, at work, or on vacation. Nearly Naked Lingerie Company The Ultimate in Unmentionables By Loretta McCollum

Ask a woman about shopping for a bra, and she’s likely to wrinkle her nose and roll her eyes. Most women put it off until they finally can’t stand their slipping straps, their too-tight bands, or their gaping cups. Finding a well-fitting bra, however, is no piece of cake—you could reasonably compare it to scoring a close parking spot at the mall on Black Friday. This can be particularly true for ladies with larger cup sizes. Just ask 28-year-old Karey Straube, co-owner of Nearly Naked Lingerie Company located at The Shops of Legacy, in West Omaha. Karey’s quest to find well-fitting bras inspired her to open Nearly Naked in 2014, along with her husband, Tim Edwards, who is co-owner. Karey always knew her career path would involve helping others, but she wasn’t always sure how that passion would manifest itself. “I really love helping people, and this was a huge need that wasn’t being met in this area,” she explains. Karey emphasizes that being properly measured and fitted for a bra is an important part of the process that often gets overlooked. “Large stores occasionally bring in national brand reps to do fittings, but that can be somewhat impersonal. Also, some women just aren’t comfortable being measured on the sales floor with lots of people around.” At Nearly Naked, the measuring and fitting process is a much more private and comfortable experience. Nearly Naked provides an intimate, elegant, and sophisticated boutique-style atmosphere, with a large selection of bras and other intimates, large fitting rooms, and a comfortable conversation area for discussion. Bra band sizes range from 30 to 42, and cup sizes include B through JJ. The store stocks a total of 130 different bra sizes, and special orders are also available. When asked who her customers are, Karey quickly states, “Everyone who wears a bra.” However, she has expanded her product lines to include panties and lingerie, with many styles for larger ladies. She believes that every woman, no matter what size she is, deserves to feel special in beautiful lingerie. As the primary bra fitter at Nearly Naked, Karey explains that a well-fitting bra doesn’t just feel like it fits better—it can even improve posture and relieve back pain. “If a band rides up and the straps slip down, the bra is probably too big,” she advises. Band width is measured just below the bust line. The band shouldn’t pinch or feel too tight. Side flesh should not spill over the bra, and the breasts should not spill out over the top. “A bra that fits well can really help you feel good about

40

November 2018

yourself,” says Karey. Nearly Naked carries several unique lines of quality bras and lingerie, including brands from Germany, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine. Whether you’re searching for everyday or elegant, you’ll find it at Nearly Naked. Karey has also started carrying activewear, including a line from local Council Bluffs designer Tamara Brunow. Tamara’s H2W (Happy, Healthy, Whole) apparel line features soft leggings and zip-front sports bras with breathable mesh lining, both crafted with moisturewicking fabric designed for comfort during your workout. Karey believes in the importance of supporting local businesses owned by women, and she’s happy to report that H2W has been well received at Nearly Naked. Top-notch customer service is one of the keys to Karey’s business plan. Her goal is to take some of the stress out of bra and lingerie shopping by providing a welcoming atmosphere and personalized service. “Some ladies have felt so comfortable that they just walked right out of the fitting room wearing a bra and no top, forgetting that they weren’t at home,” Karey shares. “We usually end up having a good laugh when they suddenly realize that they’ve just walked out into the store half-dressed!” Customer Jordan agrees. “I’ve never felt more comfortable in a lingerie shop,” she says. “My husband was even allowed in the dressing room to give opinions on what he liked, which is something I was not expecting. Overall, this is a friendly place that we will definitely try to return to.” Another customer shares, “Karey is so passionate about making sure customers find what they’re looking for and, most importantly, get the right fit. I would recommend Nearly Naked to friends and will definitely be going back myself.” Ladies, you don’t have to put up with ill-fitting bras. Pull up those pesky straps one more time, and then head over to Nearly Naked Lingerie Company today at 16901 Wright Plaza, Suite 168, in Omaha. The store is open Monday through Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Thursday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, call 402-330-1992 or visit nearlynakedco.com. WE

Garage Makeover Clean Out Your Clutter

By Anne Yankus

It’s the last gasp of reasonable weather before true winter hits! That means it’s the perfect time to clean up and get your garage organized for all those projects you’ll want room for over the winter (not to mention the room you’ll need to park your car inside, out of the snow and ice). Now, the procrastinator in you is probably wondering, “Do I really need to have a visually appealing, well-organized garage? After all, it’s not like it’s the living room.” Here’s my answer: Of course you do! There are many reasons to clean up your garage, such as freeing up floor space, having more versatility for storage, and decreasing the likelihood of adding more clutter over time. A great place to start when creating an organization system for your garage is to draft a floor plan. This doesn’t need to be fancy; it just needs to be to scale. When planning, you’ll want to keep the floor as clear as possible, as this will make the space safer to walk through or work in. You can accomplish this by utilizing any combination of the many kinds of freestanding cabinets, pegboards and hooks, or wall-mounted shelving units to store your stuff. Now that you’ve got room to park your car, you can use the rest of your newly available garage space for whatever you want— tool and garden equipment storage, extra refrigerator, or a small workshop.

Even if building is not your favorite hobby, some space to work in the garage can be a great asset when you’re working on small home improvement or gardening projects. Make sure to select a work bench that can withstand the weight and abuse from any tools you plan to use on it. After that, you’ll probably want a tool chest for all of your small tools and equipment. (Perhaps a rolling tool chest is on someone’s holiday gift list?) Other things to consider are the placement of electrical outlets and whether you have adequate lighting, heating, and cooling to work. To ensure that you have proper lighting in your garage, you’ll want to replace the old bulbs with some high-efficiency fluorescent or LED bulbs. If your old porcelain sockets are chipped or broken, an electrician can replace them for you. Once your garage is all cleared out, you can also add to the value of your home by making your garage more visually ›››

appealing with a new floor coating, an upgraded garage door, and a top-of-theline garage door opener. There are many options to improve your garage flooring. One of the most popular choices is epoxy coating. It is known for its durable finish, which is resistant to chips, impacts, and stains. Epoxy is also a great choice for its aesthetic variety and its ability to cover existing cracks. Polished concrete can also seem like an attractive option, and it certainly does look beautiful. However, it is not recommended if you’re planning on using the garage space for a workshop, as polished concrete is vulnerable to chemicals such as solvent, gasoline, and acids. A polished concrete floor will also require a lot of maintenance if you plan to park your regular, everyday use car on it. Some other options for garage floors are interlocking tiles (made of heavy-duty vinyl or rubber), roll-out vinyl, peel-and-stick tiles, or paint. The next item on your garage makeover list should be the door. A plain old door is fine so long as it’s in good shape and functions well. If you really want to punch up your curb appeal, consider an attractive new door that specifically complements the style of your home. The most popular styles are traditional garage doors (which can be special-ordered to match any popular home style), carriage doors (which replicate the style of old carriage houses), raised-panel doors, and contemporarystyle doors. New doors can be made with glass, steel, fiberglass, vinyl, or solid wood. Depending on your budget and the style of your house, you should have a number of options to choose from. Traditional-style doors come with the now-standard roll-up mechanism, which can be installed with a custom automated opener or can be retrofitted after installation. If you want to go a step above, new high-tech models are now available. There are models with back-up batteries that will keep your garage door going even when the power goes out, as well as models that can open or shut via your smartphone. Don’t wait until the snow flies and you’re stuck parking in the driveway, scraping off your windshield every morning. Get started on a fantastic garage makeover! Eating Disorders Symptoms, Treatments, and Recovery

By Connie Keck

Eating disorders are serious conditions related to persistent eating behaviors that negatively impact a person’s health. Eating disorders are complex and can result from an interaction of biological and genetic influences, temperamental and personality factors, behavioral tendencies, and environmental risks. Eating disorders affect all aspects of the human experience: psychological, medical, nutritional, physical, and relational. The most common eating disorders are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and bingeeating disorder. Anorexia nervosa, often shortened to anorexia, is a potentially life-threatening eating disorder. People with anorexia use extreme efforts to control their weight and shape, and this can interfere with their health and life activities. A person may excessively limit calories or use other aggressive methods to lose weight. Some people may engage in excessive exercise, consume laxatives or diet aids, or vomit after eating. Efforts to lose weight even when underweight can cause severe health problems, up to and including deadly starvation. Bulimia nervosa, commonly called bulimia, is also a serious and potentially life-threatening eating disorder. With bulimia, people have episodes of bingeing and purging that involve feeling a lack of control over their eating. During an episode, an excessive amount of food is consumed over a short amount of time, after which the person may force vomiting or use laxatives to get rid of the calories. People with bulimia are often preoccupied with weight gain and body shape, and

46

November 2018

they may judge themselves harshly for their perceived flaws. Binge-eating disorders include the bingeing episodes of bulimia but often do not include the purging. People who struggle with a binge-eating disorder regularly eat too much food and feel a lack of control over eating. They may eat quickly or eat more food than intended, even when they do not feel hungry, or they may continue to eat even long after they are uncomfortably full. These people may feel disgusted by or ashamed of their behavior. Embarrassment can lead to eating alone or hiding their bingeing. Episodes of bingeing usually occur at least once a week. A person with a binge-eating disorder can be of normal weight or can be overweight or obese. Emotional and psychological problems such as low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety may contribute to an eating disorder. Trauma and family discord can contribute to one of these eating disorders, as well. Though they are based in food and eating behaviors, eating disorders are essentially efforts by the person to exert control over something. Some people may have genes that leave them more vulnerable to eating disorders. Your chances of having an eating disorder rise if you

have a sibling or parent who suffers or has suffered from the same condition. Images in the media and peer pressure will often reinforce a negative body image. In Western culture, this type of pressure to be thin is especially hard on young girls. No simple cure exists for eating disorders, but treatment is available, and recovery is possible. Through a combination of therapy, nutritional education, and medical treatment, the symptoms of an eating disorder can often be managed or eliminated. Unfortunately, only one in 10 people with an eating disorder receives treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment significantly increase the chances of recovery. Psychotherapy can help sufferers to explore the causes and thought processes behind the eating disorder. It may also help to teach ways to cope with stress and other problem-solving techniques. It can help with the treatment of other existing mental disorders, like depression or anxiety. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a very structured program that encourages patients to change their patterns of thinking and behavior. It can be done individually or in a group setting. CBT is frequently combined with other therapy treatment options. Nutritional counseling is an essential component of eating disorder treatment. An eating disorder distorts the person’s perceptions of a healthy diet. Nutritional counselors can help people form eating plans that will allow them to maintain a healthy weight. Dieticians can help instill normal eating habits. Medically assisted treatment may be needed, especially if a patient is extremely underweight at the start of treatment. Chronic anorexia may damage the heart, cause low blood pressure, or lead to organ failure. An evaluation and continuing treatment by a medical doctor is essential. Medications may be used to help curb urges or lessen obsessive thoughts about food, exercise, or body image. In severe cases, residential eating disorder centers may also be helpful because patients can access the medical and psychological treatment they need in a safe and supportive environment. Managing an eating disorder can be a long-term challenge, but recovery is very possible. If you or someone you love needs help with an eating disorder, contact your doctor right away to get in touch with the professionals who can help you get a treatment plan in place. An Inside Look

A Permanent Solution Stop Fighting That Frustrating Fuzz By Elizabeth French

Electrologist Julie Thornton is delighted to have her office in Dundee (at 4910 Dodge Street, Suite 101). She moved her business, A Permanent Solution, to this location in 2012 because she loves the neighborhood—in fact, her childhood home is just blocks away! She also loves having a discreet office that’s still on the main drag. “It’s really easy to find me here, right on Dodge Street,” she says. Though Julie’s mother was also an electrologist, it took Julie some time to discover that she belonged in the business. After earning a bachelor’s degree in fashion design in Chicago, she worked in several places before her mother suggested that Julie’s “extreme attention to detail” would serve her well in electrology. Julie completed over 600 hours of training and practice before starting her own practice in 2007. Because she works in an incredibly small niche, Julie has local clients and ones who come from neighboring states. With fewer and fewer electrology schools left, it is becoming increasingly difficult to train new electrologists. Julie continues to educate herself on new methods and technology through the American Electrology Association, which allows fellow professionals to network while continuing their educations. There are only 11 electrologists left in the state of Nebraska, many in the Omaha and Lincoln areas. Sadly, Julie says, “once the two in Lincoln retire, there won’t be anyone else.” Julie notes that about 80 percent of her work is on the face and 20 percent is on the rest of the body. The excess hair that her clients want removed can show up for many different reasons. Some of her clients are going through polycystic ovarian syndrome. “Due to the hormonal factors involved with PCOS, they tend to get a lot of hair growth,” Julie shares. “I also have a lot of transgender clients.” Many of her clients are going through menopause. “As our estrogen levels drop,” she explains, “our male hormones tend to stay at the same level, so we will see a lot of hair growth in that stage of our lives. People who go on certain medications tend to get hair growth, and then there are just some people who have a genetic predisposition to it.” Depending on an individual’s hair growth, clients come to Julie on different schedules. While some only need yearly or monthly touch-ups, some come on a weekly basis for maintenance. To cater to her clientele, Julie typically offers hours between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., and she even does sessions on Saturday! People find her online booking “very convenient,” she says. It is important to note the vast difference between electrolysis and laser hair removal. While an electrolysis session can take longer, it works differently.

48

November 2018

Because it works under the skin, it is a good solution for people of many different complexions. Also, Julie points out, “Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved solution for permanent hair removal.” Rather than the laser used in laser hair removal, Julie utilizes electricity. “It’s a thin wire that slides into the hair follicle. The electricity kills the cells at the bottom.” Using a probe that is as thin as the hair itself, the procedure varies in length, depending on the amount and thickness of the hair. To achieve the optimal result, Julie uses insulated probes, which keep the heat from her instrument underneath the skin, promoting faster healing. Without insulated probes, Julie says, “the area could be a little redder longer.” Julie likes to get to know her new clients and walk them through the treatment process before she begins. A challenge she often faces is that many people confuse electrolysis with laser hair removal. “I was at a bridal show recently, and I had people coming up to me, saying their hair was too light for electrolysis to work. I explained that it is laser hair removal, not electrolysis, that depends on the hair’s color. Electrolysis can be done on hair that is any color.” People also overestimate the amount of pain the procedure can cause. Julie’s new clients are often surprised, she shares, at how little pain they experience. If clients are still concerned about pain relief, they can obtain a prescription for lidocaine from their general practitioners, but most do not. Most of them need no numbing whatsoever, just walking away smoother and happier. The most rewarding part of Julie’s profession is helping her clients through emotional and private stages of their lives. “Everyone is so kind,” she says, “and they’re so grateful to finally have this dealt with.” Julie recommends that clients talk to their primary physicians before beginning electrolysis or any type of hair removal, as medications or medical conditions could be contributing to excess hair growth. If electrolysis is the next step for you, call Julie at A Permanent Solution today at 402-558-1948. For more information, visit omahaelectrology.com. WE

Toothpaste and Mutual Funds Are They All the Same?

By George Morgan

A recent article in The Wall Street Journal reported that there are over 250 brands of toothpaste currently on the market. Most claim to whiten teeth, some claim to prevent gum disease, and others hint that their product will improve your social life. The author of the article contacted the American Dental Association for a professional opinion on the toothpaste manufacturers’ claims. According to the ADA, the only real benefit of toothpaste is cavity prevention. The experts say that our teeth naturally lose their whiteness as we age, and nothing can be done to reverse it. The ADA also responded that toothpaste doesn’t prevent or reduce gum disease. So, if all toothpastes serve essentially the same one function, why are there 250 different brands to choose from? The simple answer is marketing. If manufacturers can convince you that their toothpaste is different and, therefore, better, you may be willing to choose it over another brand. Even better, you may be willing to pay a higher price for it. Without the added cost of marketing, a generic toothpaste could probably be produced for significantly less than what the more popular brands sell for. The ADA response indicated that there is no secret formula for toothpaste; the major difference between brands is the flavor additive. I have had the opportunity to review the mutual funds menus of several institutions of higher learning, and I’ve found a situation much like the toothpaste market. All of these institutions had over 200 mutual funds to choose from. They run the gamut from conventional markets to areas that are so small that the ability to trade shares is really quite low. There can be advantages and disadvantages to particular mutual funds, but the main problem with offering 200 of them is that 90 percent of the participants have no clue which ones to choose and end up intimidated and confused by the sheer number of them. As a result, some participants make bad choices, and some people make no choices at all, which leaves them with little or no investment return. The mutual fund companies in question put forth multiple reasons for the large number of funds they offer to the participants. The first justification they give is that the plan participants need diversification. It doesn’t take 200 funds to get diversification, though. The truth is that a simple S&P 500 index fund will give you all the diversification you need. The response I often get is that if it’s just one fund, where’s the diversification? An S&P 500 index fund provides exposure to the 500 companies that are the biggest and best the market has to offer. They represent 85 percent of the total American market. That’s pretty diverse. The next justification that the financial services

50

November 2018

industry gives for offering 200 funds is that plan participants need international exposure. Again, it does not take 200 funds to take advantage of what is going on overseas. The biggest stocks in the S&P 500 are companies like Google and Microsoft, many of which make close to half of their business in the international market. To offer unsophisticated investors funds that represent underdeveloped countries that even the professionals are uncertain about is not looking out for the participants. The real reason they offer so many funds, which they don’t talk about, is the same as in the toothpaste industry—they have products that they need to sell. What number of funds is more realistic? Probably about 10. The law requires that 401(k) participants have access to target-dated funds. This type of fund changes its mix of stocks and bonds as time goes on. As the owner gets older, the amount of stock exposure declines and the percentage of bonds increases. In the average 401(k) plan, this would require six or seven different funds. The good news about target-dated funds is that they are stable and that, in many of the plans I have seen, a high percentage of plan participants are in them. The bad news is that many have high fees and that their performance versus the market average is low. However, there is a fee war going on in the mutual fund industry right now, and the cost of target-dated funds is declining rapidly. In addition to target-dated funds, every 401(k) plan should have several index funds available, including an S&P 500 fund or a Dow Jones fund. They should also include a money market fund and a generic bond fund. As you can see, there’s a lot going on in the area of retirement funds. How many funds does your employer offer for your 401(k)? Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. To determine which investments may be appropriate for you, consult your financial advisor prior to investing. WE

The Many Faces of Memory Loss Understanding Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease

By Linda Barnes

We tend to use the terms “dementia” and “Alzheimer’s” interchangeably, though that’s not quite correct. Alzheimer’s disease is just one form of dementia, though it is the most common form. Many of us know someone who is dealing with the difficult challenges of memory loss or dementia. In the United States alone, there are an estimated 5.5 million people with Alzheimer’s disease, of which two thirds are women. It tends to strike after age 60, though younger people are not immune. The risk increases with age and with genetic factors. At present, there is no cure, though some medications have proven helpful in treating symptoms, at least temporarily. Researchers are working tirelessly to understand how Alzheimer’s disease works and to discover a path to prevention and treatment. In the simplest terms, dementia refers to the decline of cognitive abilities such as problem solving, attention, memory, judgment, and language. People with dementia have a cognitive decline serious enough to hinder day-to-day functioning, not the milder decline that is caused by natural changes of aging. Occasionally forgetting a name or appointment, making a mistake balancing the checkbook, or misplacing an item are typical age-related changes that all of us over 60 are likely to experience. More serious decline that might point to dementia or Alzheimer’s disease includes forgetting important dates or events, asking the same

question repeatedly, developing a habit of frequently losing important items, using poor judgment with money, or exhibiting unusual confusion or fearfulness. Professionals who specialize in dementia can test and evaluate a person to determine what is causing such symptoms. A physical exam and laboratory tests will be in order. Neurological exams can determine whether something besides Alzheimer’s disease might be involved, such as Parkinson’s disease, a stroke, a tumor, or other physical issues. Mental status testing looks at the ability to solve problems, mental skills, and memory. The possibility of a mood disorder will be considered. MRI, CT scans, or EEG may be helpful in diagnosis. Current treatments for Alzheimer’s disease are aimed at managing symptoms. Several drugs are approved for treating symptoms and may depend upon the stage of the disease. Generally, three stages are identified: mild (early stage), moderate (middle stage), and severe (late stage). The disease worsens over time, though the rate of progression can vary greatly between individuals. In the early stage, patients may be able to function fairly well with a

little assistance from a family member, friend, companion service, or in-home caregiver. They can enjoy the benefits of remaining at home, but assistance may be needed with housekeeping, shopping, meals, or personal care. Some people may need help managing their bill paying and financial dealings. Many resources are available to support family caregivers. You may be fortunate enough to have a memory disorders clinic in your area. They provide a variety of specialists who can handle all aspects of care. This might include geriatric neurologists, nurse case managers, therapists, and social workers. Genetic testing and counseling may be available. A team works together to create a personalized care plan. Such clinics often are involved in research, so clients have the advantage of the latest therapies and medications. Moderate stages present more challenges for caregivers. Options include in-home care, adult day care, or, possibly, a move to an assisted living arrangement. If a family member continues to provide care, it is important to share some of the responsibilities with other family members or obtain help from a local agency. Respite care may be available, as well, to provide specialized care and to give caregivers a much-needed break. Assisted living arrangements bridge the gap between remaining at home and skilled nursing care. Housing, meals, activities, and health care are typically offered. Some facilities have a memory care unit with specially trained staff. Another option is a group home for those who require special care for dementia or memory issues. Typically housing around six residents who are able to interact with staff and other residents, this may provide more comfort and social interaction than a nursing home–style facility. Late-stage Alzheimer’s disease may require skilled nursing care, since this stage often involves more than loss of memory. Mood and personality can change, the ability to walk may diminish, and swallowing may be affected. Patients often lose the ability to communicate and become vulnerable to infections, especially pneumonia. Many skilled nursing facilities have a memory care unit where trained staff provide compassionate care and the latest techniques. While there is not yet a cure, much can be done to relieve symptoms and provide a good quality of life for those experiencing dementia. Many believe that prevention and cure may be just over the horizon! Sources for this article included: alz.org, medicalnewstoday.com, and aarp.org. WE

Chiropractic and Acupuncture Great Additions to Healthy Living

By Leslie Byrne

We all have a list of our regularly scheduled health care appointments: physical exam, flu shot, dental cleaning, eye exam, etc. Have you considered adding chiropractic care or acupuncture to that list? If not, you should learn more about the benefits of each discipline. Chiropractic care treats the musculoskeletal system,

especially the spine. The name “chiropractic” comes from the Greek, meaning, “to be done by hand.” People may seek chiropractic treatment for problems like back pain, neck pain, and headaches, but they may also continue treatment for overall improved wellness. Chiropractic, which consists of hands-on, drug-free methods, can provide health benefits for people of all ages, even infants and children. The list of benefits of chiropractic treatment is long. The most commonly cited benefits include lowering blood pressure, decreasing the progression of scoliosis (when combined with physical therapy), reducing neck and lower back pain, reducing sciatica pain, reducing the inflammation that causes joint pain and other conditions, and reducing tension and migraine pain. Many of the conditions that can be improved with chiropractic care are chronic pain conditions. Any treatment that reduces chronic pain lowers the patient’s risk of over-medication and potential addiction to pain medications. Many sports teams also encourage their

athletes to seek chiropractic care as part of their health routine. Chiropractic care isn’t just for adults. In fact, many families take their children, including infants, to chiropractors. The most common reasons that parents seek chiropractic care for children are to promote proper growth and development of the musculoskeletal system and to reduce ear infections, colic, constipation, and allergies. Consult with your child’s pediatrician and meet with a chiropractor to learn more about the benefits of treating children. If you decide to incorporate chiropractic care into your health routine, you will find that there are several different techniques in existence. You should ask about the treatment process with the chiropractor before your first adjustment. One of the most common methods of treatment is the diversified technique. The main purpose of the diversified technique is to restore motion and align the spine and the extremities. The chiropractor uses hands-on thrusts to specific points on the body to restore proper alignment. Similar to the diversified technique is the Gonstead technique. This involves hands-on adjustment to the low back or pelvis and

uses quick manipulation movements while patients lie on their side. It is used to reduce pain and stiffness. The activator technique is when the chiropractor uses handheld instruments; this technique is often used on older patients. Chiropractors may also use the Thompson technique, sometimes known as the drop table technique. With this technique, the patient is face down on a table designed to drop a little when the doctor applies a quick thrust to the spine to make the adjustment. This is an advantage for patients who are difficult to move or are in a lot of pain. Acupuncture is an ancient method of healing that started during the Stone Age, when sharp tools and stones were used to puncture and drain abscesses. The basis of modern acupuncture started in China in the 6th century. Acupuncture uses sharp, thin needles that are inserted at very specific points on the body to improve the body’s functions and promote self-healing. Acupuncturists are required to be licensed, so do not be afraid to ask for that information. Many chiropractors are also trained in acupuncture; if so, the chiropractor is also required to hold an acupuncture license. On the first visit, an acupuncturist will ask about your health history. The acupuncturist will feel your pulse and may have you perform various body movements, depending on the health concerns you report. When it comes to inserting the needles, most people feel very little discomfort or none at all. The needles are left in for five to 30 minutes, and it can be a very relaxing experience. To treat chronic conditions, you may need to have regular sessions for several months. Acute conditions may resolve after only about eight to 10 visits. A great deal of research has been done on acupuncture, and it is known to improve several conditions, including back and neck pain, chemotherapy-induced nausea, migraine headaches, anxiety, osteoarthritis, and inflammation. This year, when you are scheduling your annual medical and health exams, add a visit to a chiropractor or acupuncturist. Chiropractic treatment and acupuncture can help reduce pain and help people avoid many types of long-term medical care. Also consider regular chiropractic adjustments as well as acupuncture to improve overall health and wellness and quality of life. SUVs and Crossovers Ten Great Choices for 2019 By Brennan Hallock

The new year is fast approaching, and that means a whole lineup of new vehicles is on the market. A segment of vehicles that has been growing rapidly is SUVs and crossovers, and it’s easy to see why—these multipurpose vehicles can fit just about anyone’s needs. SUV is short for “sport-utility vehicle,” and it has become a pretty broad term, referring to nearly any vehicle that has high clearance and all-wheel drive. SUVs and crossovers are often lumped into the same category because of these similarities, but they have one significant difference. A crossover is designed and built on the chassis of a car, while an SUV is designed and built on the body of a truck. This means that a crossover utilizes a unibody construction—that is, the body plus frame is all in one piece—while an SUV utilizes a body-on-frame construction (the body is a separate piece mounted on the frame). True SUVs tend to be a very small part of the market nowadays, comprising only 10 percent of the total passenger utility vehicle sales in 2015. Most vehicles that we call SUVs are actually crossovers. Some examples of SUVs are the Jeep Wrangler, Toyota 4Runner, Ford Expedition, and Chevrolet Tahoe. Some examples of crossovers are the Nissan Murano, Toyota Highlander, Honda CR-V, and Tesla Model X. Now that we’ve reviewed the difference between SUVs and crossovers, let’s take a look at what’s coming in 2019.

Honda CR-V. This is the best-selling crossover in the United States. It’s good-looking, reliable, and spacious; it handles well; and it gets an impressive 30 mpg. Add to that a starting price of just $24,000, and it’s easy to see why it’s so popular. Honda also improved safety features in their new model, increasing the amount of ultra-high-strength steel in the body frame, which improves rigidity. They also added an agile handling assist system, which subtly responds to steering commands for more stability and predictability. Lincoln Aviator. This resurrected SUV model comes loaded with safety and convenience features. It has a forward-facing camera that scans the road ahead and automatically adjusts the dampers in anticipation of road conditions. You can also use your smartphone to lock and unlock the doors, open the trunk, and start the vehicle.

Mercedes Benz G-Class. Mercedes is known for its luxury features, and the G-Class SUV does not disappoint. A roomy, leather cabin includes a dual-display “widescreen cockpit” with selectable graphic styles. The climate-controlled front seats contain air chambers that continuously fill and empty, depending on the driving, and are able to give a massage. Ford Edge ST. The ST is an upgrade to previous sport models, putting 335 horsepower under the hood. This model is roomy and sleek in addition to being powerful and fun to drive. Mazda CX-5. Mazda’s CX-5 model is one of the best sellers in its class. It is compact, handles well, gets excellent gas mileage, and costs less than $30,000, making it a solid all-around purchase. One exciting new feature is a cylinder deactivation feature, which helps save fuel by shutting off two cylinders during light load situations. Jaguar I-PACE. This agile, comfortable crossover is Jaguar’s first all-electric vehicle. The 90 kWh lithium-ion battery gives a range of about 300 miles, and it recharges 80 percent in only 40 minutes. Its twin electric motors produce the equivalent of 395 horsepower, allowing it to go from 0–60 mph in an incredible 4.5 seconds. Subaru Ascent. Subaru has been in the crossover market for a long time with its relatively small Forester. Now it is releasing

the Ascent, which has three-row seating, 260 horsepower, and the standard all-terrain versatility Subaru is known for. Subaru’s EyeSight safety features come standard and include a heads-up display and reverse auto-braking. Acura RDX. This crossover has had its engine overhauled, delivering 40 percent more low-end torque than its predecessor, with a 10-speed automatic transmission. It is one of the highest-rated vehicles on the market in terms of safety. Add to all of this a new look and increased size, and you’ll find that this is a fun, safe, and sporty vehicle. Lamborghini Urus. If it’s luxury and power you seek, this crossover brings both. With a whopping 641 horsepower, it can hit 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. The largest carbon-ceramic brakes in the world will be able to stop it almost as quickly. This may HONDA CR-V seem excessive, but if you can afford a $200,000 price tag, this may be the type of vehicle you are looking for. Lexus UX 250h. This hybrid crossover from Lexus has 177 horsepower, a sleek look, and smooth handling. Its low center of gravity and rigid structure make it agile and quick. Its safety features include pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane tracing, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. The Good Life

Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend Jewelry as an Expression of Love and Style By Holly Tierney-Bedord

You’ve heard the old adage that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but why are these precious stones so special to us, often getting passed down for generations? How does something that starts out as a token of love or an expression of style become a family heirloom? Nearly as long as there have been people, there has been jewelry. Gemstones and other found objects like feathers and bone have been incorporated into jewelry-making for over 25 thousand years! As humans became more skilled, the jewelry that they created evolved, too. For more than a thousand years, we have had the technology that allows diamonds to be cut into the multi-faceted, sparkling attention-getters that we’re used to seeing today. You’ve probably heard of the four Cs (Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat) that determine the quality of a diamond. This grading system was created in the 1950s and is the modern standard for evaluating diamonds. Cut is the placement and number of tiny slices shaping the diamond. The higher the number of cuts and the more strategically and expertly placed they are, the more light the diamond will reflect, and the more the diamond will sparkle. Clarity is how transparent or opaque the diamond is. Clarity also considers spots and imperfections in the diamond. Clearer rates higher than cloudy. While white diamonds are what most of us traditionally associate with the look of a diamond, they actually come in many other colors. The brighter, deeper shades (pink, red, blue) are very rare and very expensive. The scale runs from D to Z, with D meaning colorless and Z meaning very colorful. Lastly, carat is the weight (size) of the diamond. A metric carat equals 200 milligrams. Because of the rarity of diamonds and the skill required to expertly cut them, they’re widely cherished and enduringly popular. While the four Cs are often applied to other stones, there really is no formally recognized or required system of grading the wide variety of other precious and semi-precious stones. Some of the most popular precious stones besides diamonds include sapphires, rubies, and emeralds. Rarity and beauty elevate a stone from semi-precious to precious. The different metals that stones are commonly set in also vary in rarity and value. Platinum, gold, and silver are all precious metals that are often used to make jewelry. Pure gold (24-karat) is quite soft. The gold that is used to make jewelry will have a lower karat number because it has been mixed with other, stronger metals so the beautiful gold color remains, but in a strong setting that can withstand the daily dings and bumps of life. The wonderful thing about jewelry is that there are so many different looks and price ranges. If you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for, you can work

with a designer to create a piece just for you. If you’re interested in going this route, contact a custom jewelry designer to learn more. You’ll meet with the designer, talk about what you’re picturing, see samples of previous work, and offer any inspiration images you may have brought along. The designer will likely begin with some sketches before crafting the design in wax. At this point, you can still request adjustments to the design. After final approval, the designer will cast the mold in fine metal and add the gemstones. Fine jewelry endures because of the quality and value of the materials used to create it. However, just like everything else, jewelry has trends that come and go. These days, oversized statement jewelry continues to dominate runways and department stores. Layered jewelry and pieces with tassels are also big. Unique jewelry pieces made of natural objects, like wood bangles or leather accents, are popular. Customdesigned pieces are as beloved as ever. Yellow gold (as opposed to white gold) is also making a big comeback. Jewelry is special because it is very personal and yet its sentiment is so publicly expressed. It’s beautiful, and it demands to be seen. It traditionally goes along with the biggest, most meaningful moments in our lives: engagement, marriage, anniversaries, graduations, and births, as well as during professional, personal, and religious milestones. For many people, an engagement ring or wedding ring is life’s most expensive gift, and it’s a piece that is worn and admired every day. The worldwide, enduring fascination with jewelry goes back nearly as far as people do. Jewelry has always been known as a lasting way to show off personality, style, family history, and one person’s commitment to another. Brazil Beauty and Adventure Await You By Jackie Williams

What comes to mind when you think of Brazil? Is it the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro? Is it the banks of the Amazon River? Is it the sounds of the song “The Girl from Ipanema”? Is it the colorful and lively festival of Carnival that runs every year before Lent? It could be any of these…and also so much more! As the fifth largest and the fifth most populated country in the world, Brazil encompasses five large geographic regions: north (tropical), northeast (hottest and driest), central west, southeast (Sao Paulo, Espírito Santo, and Rio de Janeiro), and south (Iguazu Falls). The country takes up 4,600 miles of the Atlantic coast and borders every South American country except Chile and Ecuador. Brazil is huge! Would you like to explore tropical landscapes, low mountains, savannas, wetlands, plateaus, and vibrant cities? You can find all of these in Brazil. Because Brazil is in the southern hemisphere, its seasons are opposite those of the United States, and the country is so large that you can find weather for every taste. No matter when or where you go, though, it’s a good idea to pack a pair of pants and a light jacket. In some locations, the weather can change instantly, no matter what time of year.

is a lot of variety in cultural influences throughout different parts of the country. There are indigenous Brazilians predominant in the Amazon basin, African influence along the coast, and European and North American cultures permeating the commercial aspect of the country, but the creative and dynamic Brazilian influence stays strong. Portuguese is spoken throughout the nation. First-timers will most likely want to start a trip by flying into Rio de Janeiro, the icon of Brazil. The Museum of Modern Art here is internationally renowned. There are also numerous theaters and museums of anthropology for those who enjoy the cultural aspects of a destination. Then there are the beaches! Side by side are Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon. Watch the surfers or take a lesson yourself at Arpoador. Afterwards, take an easy bike ride or walk along Avenida Atlântica to enjoy people-watching, shopping, restaurants, and bars. This would be a great area to stay in, with plenty to do…or not to do. When you’re ready to move around the country a bit, check out Iguazu Falls, one of the world’s largest and most impressive waterfalls. You could also cruise the Amazon River for several days to explore the rainforest, jungle, and wild nature. Reputable organized tours are available for both of those and many more; ask your travel agent to recommend a tour and book you a spot. If you enjoy scuba-diving, you can find one of the most amazing dive sites at Fernando de Noronha, reachable by plane or a two-day cruise. My Portuguese friend, Eloise, recommends going to Brazil because of the great food, warm people, and natural beauty. She gets excited and enthusiastic when describing her favorite dish of feijoada (a delicious stew that she has cooked for me) and visiting Bonito and Pantanal. These are great choices if you prefer to travel to a less-visited area. There, you can experience great snorkeling, waterfalls, caving, wildlife viewing, piranha fishing, and swimming in the famous and beautiful Lago Azul Grotto (Blue Lake Grotto), where the rich minerals provide its signature intense blue color. These are just the tip of the iceberg and only a sample of what you can enjoy on your first trip to Brazil. If you want to experience Carnival in Rio, you need to plan far in advance, as this is the busiest time of the year. Enjoy the culture, beauty, and adventure of Brazil! Enterprising Ideas

Miracle Hills Clinic Innovative, Personalized Care By Loretta McCollum

It’s easy to take good health for granted, but even minor health issues can affect quality of life. When we do seek medical treatment, a primary care practice is the logical starting point. Primary care physicians treat a variety of health concerns in patients of all ages. Primary care physicians often serve as a lifeline in today’s fragmented healthcare system, and Miracle Hills Clinic is no exception. Dr. Maman Lawan Ali and his team provide preventative care, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic conditions, in-house minor surgical procedures, state-of-the-art laser therapy, bioidentical hormone therapy, and customized allergy diagnosis and treatment, just to name a few of their services. Dr. Ali, a native of Niger, opened the practice in 2015, wanting to deliver high-quality medical service with up-to-date technologies. “I’ve wanted to be a healthcare worker for as long as I could remember,” Dr. Ali recalls. “Where I grew up, people traveled 200 miles just to see a doctor.” The catalyst for his decision to become a physician is personal and highly emotional. He tearfully explains how his younger sister developed an undetermined respiratory illness at the age of three. Their father had to take her hundreds of miles to get a permanent tracheotomy that would allow her to breathe freely. The metal tube needed frequent removal for cleaning, as it would become clogged with mucus. The tube functioned properly for about two years until, one day, it didn’t—and his sister did not survive. A young Dr. Ali decided then and there that what he wanted to do with his life was help other people breathe. Dr. Ali moved forward with his education, getting his medical training at Abdou Moumouni University in Niger. He moved to the United States in 2001, and he completed his residency in family and internal medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical School here in Omaha. He was delighted to open Miracle Hills Clinic three years ago, keeping the promise he made to himself to help people stay healthy. Dr. Ali is proud of his staff members, who he refers to as “The A Team.” Aside from being top-notch staff, their names all begin with the letter A: physician assistant Ashley and nurse (also) Ashley. In January, the practice will welcome women’s care specialist Dr. Aruntha Swampillai, the newest member of The A Team. Dr. Ali knows what it’s like to be unable to access high-quality medical care, so he strives to bring the most up-to-date treatments to every patient. The team offers the latest in condition-specific treatments. Their in-house allergy clinic conducts allergy testing, so patients receive customized immunotherapy

treatment. For patients with migraine headaches, they offer both Botox injections and sphenopalatine ganglion blocks, a procedure in which Dr. Maman Lawan Ali medication is injected into this group of nerve cells, which is linked to the main nerve associated with headache pain. Maintaining hormone balance is critical for mood and health as we age. Miracle Hills Clinic offers bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, which uses plant-based ingredients and is custom-compounded for each patient. For the ever-growing population of people dealing with depression or chronic pain, they offer ketamine infusion therapy. This treatment potentially provides relief from both conditions when other treatments have failed. The versatile Fotona4D laser is the latest stateof-the-art technology featured at Miracle Hills Clinic, and you won’t find it anywhere else in Omaha. This single device can help improve many conditions. It can be used to improve the look of scarring on the skin, remove unwanted hair, and stimulate hair growth where it is wanted. The laser can also be adjusted to melt fat cells, firming and tightening skin along the way. It can even be used to treat snoring by tightening up the portion of the airway that “flops” and causes snoring. In addition to offering the latest technology, the team at Miracle Hills Clinic strives to make their patients comfortable by listening. They see fewer patients per day than the average practice, Dr. Ali notes. “If you sit down and listen, you can glean a great deal of diagnostic information, just by taking the time to hear what your patients are telling you,” Dr. Ali points out. “We like to make people feel like they’re in a familiar place. If they’re comfortable, they are likely to be more open to discussing their concerns.” If you are searching for a superior primary care provider or would like more information on any of the procedures mentioned here, please contact The A Team at Miracle Hills Clinic. You can reach them by phone at 402905-2075, online at miraclehillsclinic.com, or in person at 11819 Miracle Hills Drive, Suite 105 in Omaha. WE

The Green Thumb

The Year-Round Gardener No Time to Sit Down

By Sharon Knierim

If you’re a new, enthusiastic gardener who has been wondering what to do with yourself as the gardening season closes down, you have no need to worry—there is always something to do in the garden! No matter where your garden is located or which USDA hardiness zone you live in, gardening can be a year-round activity. It may seem ludicrous to be working in a frigid garden plot at this time of year, but it truly does make sense to continue doing those chores that keep a garden in tip-top shape. Plants and hardscape alike need some maintenance over the winter. The double bonus to gardening during the cold months is that you will enjoy and benefit from the extra exercise and physical activity that often goes by the wayside once the weather gets cold. This gardener has to admit that finding mice scurrying around in the garden is her least favorite part of the season. It seems that when I remain active in the garden, and our cat and I tag-team the varmints, they are less enthusiastic about raiding the garden. I suppose they move to another garden. Perhaps they move in with the neighbors. With all the breathtaking beauty of a garden during spring and summer, it seems odd to look for beauty during these coldest and

harshest of months, but the beauty is there. This season’s beauty is often more subtle. Instead of invoking thrills within us about all the passionate colors and textures, we are given instead the peace and tranquility of a more restrained landscape. The garden is generally quiet now. The bugs we swatted away all summer have taken a sabbatical for a few months, so gardening no longer includes our emphatic waving of arms to stave off those airborne invaders. So, what can be found in a winter garden? There’s plenty to enjoy. Our favorites are the red-twigged dogwoods. If you’ve not experienced them, treat yourself next spring. We have a small grove of them. They are lovely, low-maintenance shrubs, though they are not highly exciting in the warmer weather. In the winter, however,

their stems offer a beautiful bright red that contrasts with the endless whites and browns of the season. They begin to fade back to green in the spring. In the colder months, if you’re looking for something to do, it’s important to remember that a clean garden is often a healthier garden. Keep trash from landing in the garden and remove any that might blow in. Don’t use the area for storing pots or supplies over the winter. What about those tulip, crocus, and daffodil bulbs you’re so proud of at bloom time? Do an inspection from time to time to be sure that none of them have been pushed up out of the ground. If the cold has heaved them out of the ground (soil is supposed to heave in cold temperatures), simply push the bulbs back into the soil at their appropriate depth and cover with mulch. Check for proper mulch coverage on other perennials, too. Sometimes Mother Nature likes to move that mulch around! If you don’t want to purchase mulch, which is readily available at garden centers, you can use dead leaves for this chore. Do not allow your evergreens to be weighed down by accumulations of snow and ice. When snow tips the boughs of evergreens, it can be as beautiful as a holiday card, but it can result in a lot of damage. Even on cold days, the snow may begin to melt and drip in the light of the sun. On the following cold night, this moisture can freeze and cause lots of problems for the trees. Use a broom to gently remove as much snow as possible. If trees are bent or weighed down, act quickly to eliminate branch breakage. Be sure to remove any ice on the tree. Of course, one of the things we gardeners love most is planning next year’s garden, and the winter months are the perfect time to do so. Now that your landscape is nearly bare, take the opportunity to look for areas that need improvement or enhancement. If necessary, place stakes in the ground to remind you of what you’ve planned. Once the spring rush begins, it’s easy to become so busy that we forget our winter dreams. Don’t let the cold weather keep you inside. Get out there in the garden and enjoy what you have created. Much of winter gardening is about maintenance, but the effort is definitely worthwhile. Cuddly Critters

Professional Pet Grooming It’s Not Just for Looks! By Brie Christensen

More often than not, furry family members take care of their people in more ways than we realize. These sweet companions make great listeners, relieve stress, and love us unconditionally. Most pets take great pride in protecting their owners from harm. When it comes time to take care of these cuddly pals, it’s critical to make smart decisions as caregivers. According to experts, professional pet grooming is one sure way to make a positive impact on a pet’s overall health. Many people overlook the fact that grooming isn’t just for beauty—it actually allows for better hygiene, which leads to better health and wellness. One advantage of finding a regular groomer is that the groomer will become familiar with your pet during regular appointments. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), groomers sometimes discover health concerns such as ear infections or skin conditions during grooming sessions that the owner may have overlooked. Regular grooming can also aid in catching nuisances like fleas and ticks, helping ensure that animals remain healthy and clean. Another concern that further stresses the importance of pet grooming is hair matting. These tangled hair strands often grow tightly and pose the threat of cutting off blood circulation, which can ultimately lead to amputation. Cat owners need to beware, too—it’s not just dogs that face these traumas. Although cats are well known for bathing themselves, they, too, can acquire terrible matting. Groomers offer various services, such as bathing, cutting and styling, nail trimming, and even teeth cleaning. Dentists recommend that we humans brush our teeth regularly to maintain good oral health, and a pet’s dental health is just as important. The American Veterinary Dental College recommends annual professional teeth cleaning for all pets, as it lessens the chance of dental disease, which can occur in animals that are not regularly seen. Professional teeth cleaning options vary. If the pet owner chooses to make a trip to the veterinary clinic, teeth cleaning may include a complete oral examination and dental x-rays. Most groomers offer an anesthesia-free teeth cleaning procedure, which isn’t as extensive as what a pet would undergo at the vet. While the ASPCA generally recommended that owners bathe pets at least once every three months, some animals or breeds with certain conditions may require additional attention or grooming. Climate might be another factor to consider for some pet parents, as different seasons might require a different type of grooming style. Again, this heavily depends on the breed and the animal’s specific shedding habits. There are many factors to consider when searching for a professional pet groomer. Most consider their furry critters to be family members, so it’s critical to weigh options. Some might opt for a traditional brick and

mortar pet grooming service, while others might go for a mobile groomer. Convenience is a big factor in this choice, as mobile groomers come to their clients. One thing remains certain: It’s always important to ask for referrals from veterinarians, friends, and family when hunting for a groomer, according to The Humane Society of the United States. Research should also be done prior to meeting with a groomer, and owners should always ask questions. Of course, asking about costs and services is important, but the American Kennel Club recommends asking a groomer for a tour of the facility and asking about the groomer’s training and experience. If the facility employs multiple groomers, it’s important to know whether your pet will see the same one at each appointment. Arguably, the most vital step in moving forward with professional pet grooming is preparing your pet for a visit to the groomer. Owners must ensure that pets are up to date on vaccines. They should also inform the groomer ahead of time about any specifics relating to their pets, including allergies, medical conditions, and general dislikes. Pet grooming can sometimes place emotional strain on both pets and owners. To overcome this, owners should attempt to better prepare their animals for grooming services by brushing regularly at home—this will help pets feel more relaxed during professional appointments. When it comes time to finally drop a pet off for grooming, owners should also keep in mind that sticking around too long could cause more stress for all parties involved, as emotional good-byes can raise a pet’s stress levels. In the end, pet grooming doesn’t need to be taxing for pet or owner. With proper research and preparation, your pet can reap the cosmetic and health benefits of regular professional grooming. When it’s all said and done, nothing beats bringing home a happy, clean, and healthy pet. Sources for this article included: humanesociety.org, aspca.org, avdc.org, and akc.org. WE

Positive Perspective

Have a Little Faith Don’t Let Fear Hold You Back “If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn’t it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons debarked, and dry cleaners depressed?” —Unknown I don’t know…I was just wondering. It may not make sense to wonder in this way, but you can’t be creative if you put limits on your wondering. I don’t mind if I am wrong or if anyone thinks that is a silly question. It’s for fun, for creativeness. I like to wonder about things; it helps me grow and continue to be creative. I like to explore; it gives me courage. I like to take risks; it gives me confidence. “Confidence comes not from always being right, but from not fearing to be wrong.” —Peter T. McIntyre Some people seem afraid to stretch their imaginations, to take a few risks. Perhaps they think they are a little too old to be risking what they have gained. Don’t be afraid to keep your faith in the things you believed as you were growing up. You challenged things, you took risks, you stepped into the arena and participated, knowing that you could fail. Don’t stop now, because you also knew you could succeed. Have a little faith.

By Janet Van deWalle

“You block your dream when you allow your fear to grow bigger than your faith.” —Mary Manin Morrissey Many of my acquaintances seem to be growing more fearful as they age. It seems so silly. In some structured ways, they talk about having faith, and practicing their faith, but they really seem to have no real faith at all. They want to protect what they have but this is precisely what causes them to die so young—they stop living! Don’t go quietly into the day and night…into some meager, carefully measured and managed existence. Make some noise (people might think you’re singing), jump around a lot (people might think your dancing), have some fun (people might also think you’re crazy). Who cares? Don’t wake up and do the minimum daily requirement. Do brave new things, stretch yourself, have more fun and excitement. Don’t let fear hold you back. “Fear is a darkroom where negatives develop.” —Usman B. Asif Are you developing negatives in the darkroom of your imagination? Have a little faith…faith that the forces of the universe are working with you, the universe is in order, and you are in your perfect place in the universe. Have a little faith and a lot of love, laughter, and fun. WE
