Publisher’s Notes
“It’s Better Than the Alternative!” July is here! I love it. I find it amazing how many Omaha natives begin to complain at this time of year about the heat and the humidity. I typically shake my head in disbelief, rewind in my mind to the cold winter days, and think to myself, “How soon they forget!” I love the long days of sun, walking outside without thinking about how many layers to put on, and just being FREE! I like July for another reason…it’s my birthday month! I turn 62 on July 1. Wow. How did that happen? I am very proud that I have made it to this point in my existence. Age is such an interesting yardstick. I know several people who are half my age but who somehow come across as older. Not in looks, but in attitude and behavior. I have always known that simply waking up each morning is a blessing not to be taken for granted. My late father, “Big Al,” had a standard line when it came to birthdays. When someone would ask him how he felt about turning a year older, he always said, “It’s better than the alternative!” Yep, you were so right on, Dad. Being appreciative of every day that we have, regardless of the challenges that are brought to us, keeps our “engines” running. I really don’t understand how some find it more useful to complain…or accuse. I don’t understand what they get from that! When I eavesdrop (which is a TERRIBLE habit of mine), what I find incredibly enjoyable is listening to families and friends laughing and having fun when they are out to eat. If I have my choice of where I’m going to sit in a restaurant, I will scope out the room and try to “match up” to the group that looks like they are having a really good time. I realized a long time ago that we all have the freedom to choose how we are going to take on each day. That is not to say that I’m perfect at it. Heavens, no! But when I wake up on the wrong side of the bed, at least I recognize it and make a conscious decision to change it. I hope you all have some time to get outside and enjoy our wonderful Nebraska weather this month. If you find yourself struggling to start your day, just remember to go to gratitude. It might take you a few minutes to get there, but I am certain there is a lot we all can be thankful for in our lives. We’ll talk next month!

Light Fabrics and Cool Simplicity Wear Summer Your Way By Holly Bell
Turn over a new leaf this summer with a soft palette of delicious pastels and nude-toned fabrics. Keeping your color palette solid, and your silhouette simple, elongates and slims your body. Fun details such as trendy cutouts offer a bit of sophistication. Cutouts are still all the rage this season! Designers have found original ways to feature cutouts on necklines, pants, sleeves—almost anywhere that is still tasteful. The fabrics this season are thin, soft, and floaty. You will love the way they feel and move with you. Soft, drapey fabrics in a body-skimming fit are a must for the summer season. Styles that flow, rather than hug, offer a guarantee of summer cool. Fabrics that wick away perspiration and keep you cool during soaring temperatures have become more and more common, and designers have really risen to the challenge of using this type of fabric. One of my favorite silhouettes is the softly falling full-leg pant. Because of the stretch and lightness of the fabric, it falls away from you instead of clinging. Another great can’t-be-beat silhouette is the trapeze dress or top. Fitted at the shoulder and through the bust but falling loosely over the waist and hip is a cut made for cool comfort on hot days—and it’s also a very forgiving style. Maxi dresses or tunics are perfect for light fabrics, as are the long flowing vests worn over pants, shorts, or anything you please! Picture how glamorous you will look with that beautiful fabric floating behind you. Most people like the idea of keeping clothing light for summer, but not everybody loves wearing pastels. No problem! This year, the hottest trend is what I would call the “white hot” look. Instead of the little black dress, it’s all about the little white dress. Of course, you can get the same idea by putting together separate pieces of all white. Important for this look, though, is the fact that the color must be true white—not cream or winter white, but a real summer tennis white. Also, the whites must match to create the optimum white hot look. Whether you’re headed for the beach or for the city lights this year, an all-white ensemble is sure to hit the spot. White-on-white is chic and looks so fresh. I really enjoy this look with metallic sandals or heels, topped off with shiny gold, silver, or sparkling crystal jewelry. One important style hint, though: Have a Tide stick handy in your bag. If you’re like me, some of your
6
July 2017

lunch may end up on your front, which really hampers the all-white look! Another great thing about wearing white this summer is that those white pieces will be great to mix with black as part of your late summer or early fall wardrobe. Black and white is a stunning, chic, year-round trend that never goes out of style. Other hot trends for this summer include anything off the shoulder, cut out at the shoulder, or slit at the shoulder. Yes, it is all about the shoulder this summer, and this is a trend I can really get behind. The bare shoulder detail is flattering for people of all ages and sizes, as the shoulder is always pretty. Platform soles are also hot this summer, which I fully support! For those of us who are vertically challenged but aren’t so comfy wearing heels, the platform sole is a real treat. It makes us a couple of inches taller but still gives us a solid base to walk on. One important detail is that the platform shoe has a back or a strap so it stays on your foot. Having your foot slide off a platform shoe may cause a twisted ankle—or worse! Another cute shoe trend for this summer is is the strappy flat sandal featuring ties that wind around your ankle or even up your calf. It’s a little bohemian-looking and adds some interesting detail to an outfit based on simplicity. Adding a little boho touch to your outfit is fun and trendy. With so many choices this summer, the fashionista can choose to wear what makes her happy and makes her feel good about herself…and still be able to stay cool and comfortable during our warmest season. Let the mood of summer and soaring temperatures take over your wardrobe with softly flowing, light fabrics that feature comfort and cool. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and inhale the floral scents of summer. It’s time to blossom and enjoy your summer, your way. Weekend Gourmet
Burgers, Parades, Flag-Waving Get-Togethers By Kate Beiting
Holiday Morning Frittata Mix together 6 eggs and one-half cup of milk. Season with salt, pepper, and any other seasonings that you desire. Mix together the filling—1 cup (total, not each) of any cut-up vegetables (onion, peppers, cooked potato, broccoli, kale, spinach—whatever you have on hand). Add the veggies to the egg mixture and stir well. Melt 2 Tablespoons of butter in a large nonstick skillet, add the egg mixture, and cook over low heat until eggs are set—about 8–10 minutes. Remove from heat, cover with foil, and let set up for another 5 minutes. Cut into wedges. Hot Dog Apps Cut 2–3 pounds of good quality (all beef) hot dogs into 2-inch chunks. Place in a slow cooker with 1 can of beer, 2 cups of brown sugar, and 2 cups of ketchup. Mix well and cook on low for 2–3 hours. House BLT Dip Mix together 1 cup of sour cream, 1 Tablespoon of dry ranch dressing mix, one-third cup of mayonnaise, one half of a tomato (seeded and chopped), and 8 strips of cooked and crumbled bacon. Chill for an hour or serve immediately. Serve with chips or toasts.
HOLIDAY MORNING FRITTATA
Chicken and Veggie Kabobs Cut boneless and skinless chicken breasts or thighs into 1-inch chunks. Place in a zip-top bag with 1 cup of prepared green goddess or Italian dressing and refrigerate for an hour or two. Presoak your skewers, if you’re using bamboo. Select a variety of vegetables, like chunks of zucchini, baby squash, grape tomatoes, big onion chunks, and even pineapple chunks. Put the chicken chunks and the vegetable chunks onto the skewers. (For even grilling, make separate meat and vegetable kabobs.) Start grilling the chicken kabobs; after a few minutes, start grilling the veggie kabobs. Turn kabobs often, and grill until cooked thoroughly. ›››

Fia & Belle Homewares Your Destination for Unique and Fabulous Finds By Robyn V Powell
Whether you’re looking for the perfect home accent or a unique gift for someone special, you’re sure to find it at Fia & Belle Homewares in Fremont. This family-owned business is a local gem, offering an unrivaled shopping experience for anyone who enjoys vintage-inspired interiors. There’s something new and interesting around every corner. In addition to home decor, Fia & Belle carries a wide selection of artisan jewelry and handmade candles, making it ideal gifting territory—self-gifting included! With its rustic farmhouse feel, Fia & Belle masterfully blends vintage furniture and housewares with select boutique items to create an inviting and wonderfully whimsical atmosphere all its own. The store is the brainchild of Sandra Murray and her daughter, Kelley Garay. Another daughter, Brianna Kindler, operates a hair salon inside the shop. “It’s just kind of a family thing that has evolved from our different styles,” says Sandra. The result is an eclectic mix of hand-selected inventory that delights shoppers at every turn. Antique dressers, tables, and cabinets artfully display lamps, books, soaps, and jewelry. Decorative items such as candleholders, china, glassware, and art are peppered throughout. Exquisitely scented candles, made exclusively for Fia & Belle, are designed to indulge your senses and enhance your home environment in a magical way. Sandra searches for the pieces shoppers will love, and she has a real knack for finding interesting items. “People today are looking for roughly finished farmhouse furniture that they can refurbish,” Sandra notes. She travels to Florida regularly, which gives her access to a different market. “A lot of east coast furniture ends up in Florida, so I keep my eye out for unique pieces to ship back to the store in Fremont.” Sandra also travels regularly to the Dallas market to see what’s trending there in home decor and gifts. To keep Fia & Belle’s inventory fresh and interesting, Sandra looks to her family for inspiration. “Understanding what styles younger people are interested in helps keep us relatable in a modern market,” she explains. “Recently, my daughter suggested carrying a particular line of candles. They sold out in two weeks! My son is a little hipster-ish, so I take inspiration from that current culture and incorporate items that keep the shop on trend. We’re constantly evolving by mixing old and new together in an interesting way. We mix trendier items with finer traditional pieces, like a piece of pottery meant to be enjoyed for a lifetime.” Fia & Belle will celebrate its third anniversary in

September, and plans are in the works for a move to a larger location. The new space is just a block away and is the former home of a four-story department store. Sandra Murray, owner Fia & Belle will occupy the main and second floors. They’ll have room to carry more of everything, and they’re excited about introducing boho clothing to their inventory. In what is truly a family affair, Fia & Belle gives Sandra just the balance she wants in her life. With six grandchildren in Fremont, and two more soon arriving, running the business keeps her anchored in a community she loves. One of the greatest rewards for Sandra has been getting to know people in the Fremont community. “I like to think of the shop as a place for people to drop in and spend time,” she shares. “I want it to be a warm and welcoming atmosphere and create a browsing experience. Most days, we offer fresh brownies and coffee, and we always have scented candles and music on. We’re here to inspire and help you decorate. Even if you’re not in the market for anything in particular, you’re always welcome to just stop in for a visit.” A drive to Fremont to visit Fia & Belle makes for a fun day trip from Omaha. It’s easy to spend a couple of hours meandering through the shop. There’s a lot to sift through, so give yourself plenty of time to peruse the constantly changing collection. The day I dropped by, I discovered an antique typewriter, as well as some intriguing photographs that conjured up fascinating back stories and a romantic sense of past styles. It’s food for the eye and mind. After your visit, head to one of Fremont’s many local eateries for lunch. There’s a certain magical quality about Fia & Belle. With its treasure trove of amazing merchandise, every visit is a quest to experience the joyful flutter of butterflies you feel when you hit upon that rare find. Fia & Belle is located at 84 West 6th Street, in Fremont, and is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursday through Saturday. For more information, call 402-699-6681 or visit www.FiaandBelle.com. WE

CANCER
www.womensedition.com
June 21–July 22
Happy birthday, Cancer! To have balance in life, you must remember to keep tension at bay. Life can be very challenging, and it is most prudent to balance your chakras to chase any stress from your present. Between the 13th and 24th of July, Crabs will need to be flexible and depend on others to some extent. During this time, you must follow a path of harmony and courage. Leo (July 23–Aug 22) This month, it will be necessary to put all emphasis on family harmony. No major life-changing decisions should be made at this time. Don’t worry; even though it will require effort, this will be a month of enjoyment. Virgo (Aug 23–Sep 22) This will be a fulfilling month creatively. Creative Virgo natives will be engaged in intellectual hobbies and will express themselves in artistic ways. Libra (Sep 23–Oct 22) House of Love may feel complicated this month. You will be preoccupied with career, but remember that love is of equal importance. Situations stabilize by month’s end. Scorpio (Oct 23–Nov 21) House of Career is very powerful. Due to major planetary movements, life will be challenging, yet profitable. Support comes from loved ones and superiors. Sagittarius (Nov 22–Dec 21) Planetary retrogrades are affecting all astrological signs. For Sagittarians, this will work out to be advantageous in the long run. Place all emphasis on your professional life for the time being. Capricorn (Dec 22–Jan 19) Allow the natural flow of things. Do
not become overwhelmed by circumstances. Worthy things will happen gradually, on their own. Aquarius (Jan 20–Feb 18) Spirituality will rule all aspects of your life this month, including social activities. You will feel some tension due to the unfavorable positions of the planets. Pisces (Feb 19–Mar 20) Career may be on the back burner for you this month. Review past performance from previous months, and then follow through on future plans. Aries (Mar 21–Apr 19) Family and psychological concerns are absorbing all of your energy. Adapt yourself to situations and others. This is difficult for the Ram, but success depends on it. Taurus (Apr 20–May 20) House of Family is more important than ever this month. You will find it beneficial to strengthen current relationships and learn something new about yourself. Gemini (May 21–June 20) Planets are moving in unfavorable ways; however, you still make considerable progress this month. Business and career should not be your main focus. The Greatest Show on Earth Already Missing the Circus
By Sharon Knierim
Have you ever attended a performance of the circus? If you have, then you almost certainly have memories of two or three hours of some of the most exhilarating kind of entertainment on this planet. The Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus closed down for good this past May, and I find myself fondly recalling the excitement I always felt when the circus came to town. The circus, which entertained millions of us for more than a century, carried us away to wonderful places where humans could fly through the air while performing somersaults in spectacularly glittered and sequined costumes. Those costumes seemed to be part of a dream (though most of us would never be caught wearing them). Beautifully colored feathers adorned both the hair and costumes of many of the beautiful women who glided back and forth in one of the three rings. Many of us had never seen elephants before the circus came to town, and now they appeared before us, marching in circles, each trunk clasping the tail in front of it. Even the old elephant was bedecked with the most lavish garments and trimmings, which seemed to bring that old gray animal into the spotlight of glamour and intrigue. Don’t forget the master of ceremonies, with his white jodhpurs and red morning coat. When he entered the big

top, we knew we were in for a rollicking good time. That tall hat atop his head brought him to a regal height as he turned round and round into the light, his wonderful voice inviting us to direct our eyes to Ring One and then Ring Two. Of course, there was always something even more enticing happening in Ring Three. There was so much going on, a child hardly knew where to look! Of course, everyone loved the clowns. It was astonishing that they never seemed to run out of ideas to tease the audience. Whether happy-faced or with an upside-down smile, those clowns tugged at everyone’s heartstrings. Our favorite clown act was the tiny car that pulled into the center ring to unload more clowns than we could count. Another favorite was the clown walking the invisible dog on a leash.

The bearded lady was a cause for alarm for some children (including this one). In real life, some of us had seen (mostly older) women with chin whiskers and had wondered how that could be possible. Would we all have beards when we were grown? I was sure we would. Plenty of little girls checked their chins for weeks after seeing the circus and spent too much time in front of the mirror, looking for pesky hairs. Decades later, some of us have found chin hairs, but I doubt if any of us have developed full beards. Still…the circus was a mysterious world of endless possibilities. The sights and sounds of the circus had the ability to transport us to another world, and the fabulous aroma of the circus will always stay in our minds. Shaking our piggy banks until they were empty allowed us to hail food vendors as they hawked their wares up and down the aisles. At the end of each performance, every child and more than a few adults had filled their tummies with mouthwatering buttered popcorn and painted their lips pink and blue with mountains of cotton candy, piled high in paper cones. Two or three hot dogs and lemonades later, we were still willing to eat anything that was offered. Our mothers probably had to deal with our stomachaches overnight, but, all in all, everyone went home happy and excited. Many of us imagined running away with the circus (do you know anyone who really did?). The circus was a completely different world than the one most of us recognized. It appeared to be a wonderful place where there were no schedules and no steadfast rules to be observed day after day. Free spirits reigned there, and it looked like a place where any kid could do whatever any kid felt like doing, whenever she felt like doing it! That was the romantic notion of the circus. In reality, of course, there must have been plenty of rules and schedules to maintain. Unbeknownst to the children watching, any endeavor as complicated as a traveling circus with multiple acts, dozens of wild animals, tons of equipment, and a cast of who knows how many performers must certainly have required lots of detailed planning. But when you’re sitting ringside at the Greatest Show on Earth, none of that seems real. Everything seems like magic. WE

Does Your Wingman Have Your Back? Personal Matchmaking With My Wingman By Deanna Beal
When my husband and I are in social gatherings with other couples, I like to ask, “So, how did you two meet?” I often hear stories about a sister, best friend, or close cousin who knew both parties and wanted them to meet one another. An introduction was made, and the rest is history. Well, it’s not quite that easy, but you often meet your life partner through someone you both know. What if your family, friends, or coworkers haven’t led you to the perfect partner? That’s where Tami Burke, owner of My Wingman, can help. Tami is a licensed therapist with a private practice in mental health counseling called Guardian Counseling. She has a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling. As Tami explains it, My Wingman naturally developed as an off-shoot from Guardian Counseling. “This is the most important relationship you can have, and we leave it up to chance, or our mothers, or a cold and impersonal website.” When Tami worked with clients who were lonely, she would often realize “that it wasn’t adding up. We’re missing something here! Your spouse plays a role that your children can’t, that your pets can’t. There’s an isolation in not having that significant other who is there to complement you.” Ever since Tami was in grade school, her brother has called her “a mother hen” because of her strong protective tendencies. Tami’s protective nature led to her work at Lutheran Family Services with survivors of sexual assault. This grew into her deep desire to help couples have a “fighting chance to start a relationship for the right reasons.” Tami guides couples into a healthy, eyeswide-open, honest experience. “It’s called My Wingman because I’ve got your back,” she says. Tami explains how My Wingman is a unique service in the Omaha area. “It’s like having your best friend helping you find the person you want to spend the rest of your life with,” she says. With My Wingman, however, your best friend happens to be a licensed therapist and a relationship coach. Sounds great, right? The My Wingman service begins with a confidential, one-hour interview with Tami. In this interview, she will personally get to know you, your interests, and your values. You meet with Tami’s professional photographer to take two tasteful and flattering photos of you: a head shot and a full-length photo. Then, Tami will let you know when she has someone she determines is a good match for you. The information you have shared with Tami about yourself is private and never shared. Tami only shares your photos and phone numbers with the other person.

She then allows you to decide whether or not to contact one another. She encourages each matched couple to get to know each other by going on at least three dates. Tami is available for a 30-minute guidance session through this process. If it’s a good match, she then bows out. My Wingman is a great resource for busy professionals who have a lot of work and family obligations. One example might be a pharmacist who is divorced and has a young son. She works long hours. When she has her son, she spends all her time with him; when she doesn’t, she often golfs with her friends. She may not know how or where she would meet someone new. The idea of dating might seem scary. “My own fear of dating is what encouraged me to put this business together,” Tami shares. “I love to connect good human beings.” Although she loves making good matches, that’s not all Tami does. Because she is trained as a therapist, she can also work with you to resolve issues from past relationships, to build your confidence, and to clarify what your goals are in a new relationship. Tami can help you discern who you really are and what kind of person you want to share your life with. She helps you find a person who truly complements you and your lifestyle. To get to know Tami a little better, you can listen to her relationship podcast “Love on the Line” (search for “Love on the Line podcast” at SoundCloud.com). In these podcasts, Tami and her friend, Trish, address topics like relationship issues, spirit guides, life purpose, and selfesteem. My Wingman is located at 6606 South 168th Street, Suite 200, in Omaha. (Guardian Counseling also operates out of this office.) You can visit My Wingman online at MyWingman.us. To reach Tami, please call 402-618-2660 or send an email message to wingmanmatch@gmail.com. Let My Wingman be your wingman, and get started on the path to a partner who truly complements you! WE

Fresh Concept
Heading Back to School It’s Never Too Late! By Kathy Glow
Education comes in many forms and is something that a person never outgrows. Sometimes, as adults, we decide that we would like to learn more about a particular subject, or we find that our current career isn’t as fulfilling as we once imagined. It’s never too late to go back to school and learn something new or pursue the possibility of a second career in an up-and-coming field. According to business magazines such as Forbes, Fortune, and Business Insider, some of the hottest new careers in the coming years will be those in the health, technology, and finance fields. Due to aging shifts in our population and a medical industry that is booming, there is a greater need for registered nurses, nurse practitioners, home health and personal care aides, health services managers, and health educators. Advancing medical technology is even opening the way for remote healthcare specialists, biomedical engineers, and implant technicians. Some hot up-and-coming careers focus on our growing fascination with and dependence on technology. Many new workers, from smart-home repair technicians to software developers, are needed in this field. Computer and information security analysts are in high demand. As our personal and business worlds expand and intertwine, interpreters and translators are often needed. In the worlds of business and finance, analysts are constantly in demand, as are human resources specialists. There is also a growing need for dental hygienists, occupational and physical therapists, medical sonographers, and mental health and family therapists. With such a wide variety of in-demand and interesting career moves to make, there is surely something for anyone eager to make a change. However, sometimes the mere prospect of change is so overwhelming that it puts a stop to a career move before it really starts. Don’t be daunted by the idea of starting fresh! Yes, there are a lot of decisions to make—just take it step by step. The place to start for advice and counseling is at a Career Planning Center (CPC). Almost every college and university—both cyber and brick and mortar—has one. Through a CPC, you can learn more about yourself and identify your interests, values, and skills. You can explore occupations and majors and research career descriptions. If you know you want to make a change but aren’t sure what your path will be, the counselors at a CPC can help you make those career and college decisions. They can help you compare college characteristics. Once you have selected a school, they can assist you with scholarships, financial aid awards, and grants. When you’re done with school and it’s time for you to find a job in your new field, a CPC can help you search industries in your area and assist you with improving your job-search skills and strategies, developing your resume, and managing your career portfolio. Many CPCs offer a host of services, such as

individual appointments, workshops, career panels, campus interviews, career fairs, and alumni events. College can be a fun and exciting place for young students who arrive straight out of high school, but most adults with a career and family simply don’t have a lot of time to hang out on a college campus. Luckily, there are many accelerated and online programs available that condense coursework and allow you to achieve your academic and career goals without neglecting your personal and work obligations. For adults returning to school, the flexibility and convenience of online learning may have enormous appeal. Some classes can be completed in as little as five weeks, sometimes with the learner setting the pace. The length of each program varies from school to school, so do your research before selecting a program. Some associate degrees may take as little as 15 months, while others may take up to two years. Bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees will likely take longer. One type of accelerated master’s degree includes a combined bachelor’s/master’s program designed to allow students to complete requirements for a bachelor’s and master’s degree simultaneously. The goal of accelerated programs is to get students out of school and into the workforce as quickly as possible, which has advantages and disadvantages. Accelerated courses often offer a blend of classroom learning and online activities. Rather than operating on a semester schedule like traditional schools, accelerated courses utilize quarters or other short terms that can last anywhere from five to 12 weeks and may be offered year-round. This shortens the time it takes to complete the requirements, but it also shortens the time you have to study the material. More to do in less time may lead some students with full-time jobs and family responsibilities to burn out quickly. Finally, most accelerated programs cost less than traditional programs; however, less financial aid may be available. Workers without a college degree may be interested

in specializing in a specific area within their industry, re-entering the job force, or seeking to enter a new career field. They may choose to attend two-year career training schools called technical schools, vocational schools, or trade schools. Such schools allow students to earn an associate degree or certificate and learn specific skills necessary for a particular job. (In some cases, trade schools are closely aligned with area businesses to train students for the type of jobs those businesses need to fill.) The career training provided by trade schools can prepare students for a wide variety of different careers and industries, including automotive repair, medical coding, animal care, graphic design, cosmetology, esthetics, aviation, culinary arts—the list goes on and on. Students can learn a trade in less time than it takes to earn a bachelor’s degree, and, in some cases, for significantly less money. Earning an associate degree can help a worker advance in her field and earn more money. Trade programs may also be offered at community colleges, which often provide education in skilled trades but also serve as a stepping stone to a four-year degree. Many private colleges have independent study options that allow you to go at your own pace. These may be offered online, on campus, or as flex courses. Instead of having to wait until the semester begins, a student can start classes at any time. Work is at the student’s own pace and can take from 12 weeks to six months to complete. While many people may have the drive and desire to learn a new skill, some do not have the necessary finances. There are ways to finance your second career and even deduct educational expenses. Adults who are single and make less than $48,000 or are married and make less than $96,000 may be able to claim a Lifetime Learning Credit. If you are self-employed, you may be able to write off up to 35 percent of your coursework as a job or
career expense. If you are employed and continuing education is one of your employee benefits, your employer can pay for up to $5,250 per year for classes for you, but you cannot write them off yourself. Tax deduction laws are tricky when it comes to learning a new skill or career. Many laws state that the courses you take can’t qualify you for a new career, only maintain or improve your current skill levels. Consult with your tax attorney to learn how best to proceed on this route. Federal aid is also available to adult learners. Just like traditional college students, adults need to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). There is no age limit on receiving federal aid. Credit scores are not considered for most federal student aid programs, though any former student loans need to be in good standing. Even though there is no federal student grant or loan designated for single parents, federal student aid can be used to pay child care costs while the parent is in school. If you are a military member, there are several aid options available, such as the Yellow Ribbon Program. Be sure to research what aid might be available to you before you enroll in a school or program. Check the U.S. Department of Labor’s free scholarship search tool (www. CareerOneStop.org) to find scholarships. Maybe you want to finish a degree you’ve already started or start the degree you wish you’d begun long ago. Maybe you want to boost your career or turn it in a new direction. Whatever your end goal, going back to school doesn’t have to be daunting and intimidating. If you do some of your homework before school begins, your efforts will surely earn you an A. Got Tech Problems? You Need Integrated Solutions By Marge Shoemaker
Nearly everything today is governed by technology. Communication is through computers. Companies, large or small, local or international, rely on technology to conduct business. Even governments work through computers and related technology. It’s all very convenient and efficient until the technological aspects of governing, conducting business, and communicating break down. When you’ve got technology problems, you need solutions—fast! That’s exactly what Integrated Solutions offers. Curt Peters, the president of Integrated Solutions, started his company 27 years ago. “Computers were just getting popular then,” Curt recalls. “The technology industry was easy to get into.” Apple computers came out when he was in high school. “My school had only one computer, but I had no difficulty getting access,” he says. He had taken a typing class in high school and marveled at how typing on the computer greatly increased his speed. He took coding and programming classes and did some computer work on the side. He started Integrated Solutions in 1990. Three years
later, Curt took on two partners, Mike McCabe and Todd Carnes. Together, they run a joint business: Integrated Solutions (the Curt Peters, President of technological side) and Futureware (the hardware and Integrated Solutions software licensing side). Integrated Solutions works with their clients in four main areas: information technology (IT), cloud services, software development, software supply, and managed services. Working in all these areas, Curt explains, “makes it easier to personalize the solutions for each client.” Some clients ask for assistance with a special project that their current system doesn’t address. Others

are more interested in maintaining inventory or tracking systems, which might require development of specialized software. Large entities such as large corporations might need more area-specific solutions. Integrated Solutions employs solution experts to develop networking and wide-ranging software solutions. The challenges of offering, devising, and providing solutions to technology-based problems are many. Technology development moves rapidly, and people interact with technology in different ways. Needs related to technology compound as rapidly as technology develops. Because of that speed, technology becomes obsolete quickly. The rapid development also presents problems of security. “As soon as we develop a firewall or stop-gap measure, it seems that someone figures out a way around it,” Curt notes. “It’s absolutely mandatory that our people stay up to date in order to ensure that our clients get what they want, when they want it, and are as secure as possible.” With technology, security is always an issue. So many people use social media that there is a lot of information floating around. Integrated Solutions reminds their clients…and the rest of us… to keep sensitive data backed up and secure. “The more you put out there, the more susceptible you are to attack,” Curt warns. He advises that both businesses and individuals develop a personal relationship with their IT solution provider, especially
for long-term solutions. “It’s like the relationship you have with your doctor,” Curt analogizes. “IT support is the doctor for your computer system.” Curt and his partners are all invested in the local area, having been raised in Iowa or Nebraska. They and their families are all involved in local activities, and they all like to travel. Curt is a current member and former president of the Suburban Rotary, which he proudly describes as “the best of local service organizations.” He continues, “It’s important to support our community if they are going to support us.” Curt finds many rewards in the business of developing technology solutions. The company gets “up close and personal” with other businesses and learns how they work. They learn how to make computers and related systems run in order to provide the utmost efficiency. Different businesses have different needs when it comes to running their business. “We’ve come to understand security, banking, inventory, warehousing, and production…and how important each of those facets is to a business,” Curt says. Obviously, being a solution provider can be a time-consuming endeavor, but it’s well worth the effort, both for the providers and for their clients. Integrated Solutions and Futureware are located at 11112 John Galt Boulevard, in Omaha. They can be reached by phone at 402331-4122 and found online at www.IntegratedSolutions.net. WE

Koca Chiropractic Helping Patients Thrive, Not Just Survive
By Deanna Beal
From the moment I shook Dr. Koca’s hand, I knew I was meeting a person with precise vision, purpose, and drive. His energy filled the room; his presence was strong, healthy, and vibrant. I couldn’t wait to hear his story! An hour later, while walking out the doors of Koca Chiropractic, I wanted to keep coming back so that the healthy, energetic atmosphere I found there could be strong in my life, too! Dr. Koca discovered his life purpose at the very young age of 13. He recalls in remarkable detail the day he realized he wanted to be a chiropractor. It was in the small town of Exeter, Nebraska, on Friday, November 18, 1977. At about 1:30 p.m., he literally crawled into a doctor’s office seeking relief from intense back pain. He recalls the hallway he traversed, the room he entered, and the words he spoke: “I can’t take it anymore. I can’t take the pain.” The doctor delivered an adjustment, and the young patient found himself doing the “chiropractic
dance.” He stood, moving and wiggling around, with a big smile and relief from his pain, asking, “What did you do?!?” In that moment, Dr. Koca knew he wanted to do that for other people. Dr. Koca attended Nebraska Wesleyan University for his undergraduate studies and earned his doctorate of chiropractic at Palmer College Chiropractic, in Davenport, Iowa. He considers Dr. Larry (“T”) Troxell, from Davenport, his hero and “chiropractic father.” Dr. Koca was committed to the study of chiropractic, and he followed T around, picking his brain and absorbing everything. profession, and to stay pure in principle to what he had learned at Palmer College Chiropractic. In May of 1989, 12 years after his initial realization that he wanted to become a chiropractor, Dr. Koca opened Koca Chiropractic in Omaha, Nebraska. At Koca Chiropractic, Dr. Koca stays true to his key principles. “Over my 30 years of chiropractic, I’ve really committed to staying in my lane and really focusing on the foundational premise of what chiropractic is,” he explains. “The job of a chiropractor is to check people—check their spine and nerve system. If they need adjusting, adjust them.” He likes to say that “every human experience you have is through your nerve system. If your experience is less than optimal, check your nerve system.” A key component to Koca Chiropractic is the relationships that Dr. Koca builds with his patients. Dr. Koca loves going to his patients’ graduations, birthday parties, weddings, and anniversaries. “They’re not just patients,” he says. “They’re part of our family.” He feels it is a privilege to be a part of their lives. One patient shared Dr. Koca’s love for basketball, and they enjoyed watching games together or talking sports. That patient has since died, and Dr. Koca spoke at his funeral. He highly values making connections with people. “Social media has taken away connection,” he laments. “We want to build a culture here that is a caring community. I’m going to do exactly for my patients as I would for my family.” Dr. Koca shares a valuable principle that he learned from Dr.
Troxell: “If you listen to a patient, they’ll tell you what’s wrong with them; but, if you listen a little bit longer, they’ll tell you how to take care of them.” Giving patients the opportunity to communicate is vital to their treatment, and personal connections with Dr. Koca can help patients open up about what they’re experiencing. The next part of treatment is with technology, using an Insight Subluxation Station, which measures how well the nervous system adapts to stress. Dr. Koca explains how we are bombarded with toxines, traumatisms, and autosuggestions. Toxines are the toxins we ingest— what we eat and drink. Traumatisms are physical activities such as lifting, twisting, and turning. Autosuggestion is what we allow to impact us mentally. When the body can no longer adapt to these forces, it will have a manifestation. “That is what we look for in our office…the negative manifestation of those invasive forces.” Koca Chiropractic goes beyond treating symptoms. They enhance the life experience. Their website states, “Our mission is to see as many people as possible thriving and reaching their full health and life potential, not just surviving.” With a thorough interview, analysis of the nerve system, and pictures of the spine, Koca Chiropractic can tailor the best course of care for each individual. Koca Chiropractic is located at 11420 Blondo Street, Suite 102, in Omaha. You can reach them by phone at 402-496-4570. Kick Off Your Shoes! This Season’s Manicure and Pedicure Trends By Monica L. Davis
Whether you are vacationing in the Hamptons or enjoying a stay-cation in your hometown, having well-manicured nails completes your entire look for summer holidays and every day! What is fun, fabulous, and trending this season? One new technique is ombré nails. Ombré is a coloring technique in which one color blends into another color. This technique is popular in clothing, hair, and now—nails! For example, your nails could start out with a rich burgundy at the base that blends into a golden tone as it reaches the tip. What a fascinating look! The French manicure has taken a twist this season—an asymmetrical twist! French manicures traditionally are designed to resemble natural nails; the base is painted pink and the tips are done in white. For this season, the clean, white hues cut across the pink base diagonally. This new twist on a classic oldie but goodie makes your nails look elegant and fresh. The color picks of this season are pinks and grays. Pink nails are timeless, and any one of the many shades provides a feminine, classic look. Gray polishes reveal your smoky side and are pretty enough to complement any occasion! Other favorite colors are ocean blues, electric oranges, and blood reds. The latest in nail art this season is cuticle jewelry (and who doesn’t like jewelry?). Actually, this look is accomplished by lining the outer edge of the cuticle with a glittery gold or silver polish.
Stripes are also making a huge appearance this season. Lots of varieties are being seen, from a single stroke in a bold color to multiple stripes creating a unique pattern. Using the season’s most popular colors in these patterns gives you an edgy yet understated look that you can wear in the office, at dinner, or at the pool. It’s perfect for summer. Nails are also shaped during a manicure, and the standard shapes have long been square, oval, and round. This season, the choices have expanded! A newer shape is the almond nail. For this shape, the nails are filed along the sides, similar to the oval shape, but the nail wall is tapered to end in a rounded peak, comparable to the shape of an almond. Stiletto nails are also increasingly popular. This spiky look starts off the same as its nuttier friend, the almond nail, but ends at a much sharper point. Natural nails are often too weak to hold these structures on their own, so they may be ›››

reinforced with gel or acrylic. If you are fond of a longer-term manicure solution, you most likely are familiar with acrylics and gel manicures. The buzz around manicures lately has been the dip powder manicure. Dip powder manicures are made up of an acrylic base, just like their traditional counterparts, but they last longer—sometimes up to eight weeks! They also offer a more comfortable fit, with lower risk of lifting and chipping. Dip powder manicures have been around since the 1980s and are making a comeback. In the early ’80s, most salons were using fiberglass, gels, and acrylics. The new dip technology offered a method of strengthening the nails using a powder and adhesive, instead of a monomer, which improved the customer experience by reducing fumes and odors in the salon. With the dip powder manicure, the color comes from a very fine pigmented powder. Your nails are dipped into a little jar of your chosen color. Instead of using UV rays to seal in your polish, the powder is applied between the base coat and the sealant. This process allows nails to dry instantly. Summer is sandal season, so we also have to consider the toes! Pedicures are the embodiment of pampering yourself. During a pedicure, the nail technician will exfoliate your feet, removing any dead skin and controlling calluses. In addition, she will trim your nail and cuticle area to keep this often-neglected spot clean. During a pedicure, you will also receive a foot and calf massage, which improves circulation and relieves tension. Don’t forget the most enjoyable part (for me, anyway)—the indulgent foot soak! You can indulge in one of many different varieties of specialty pedicures, which often involve special ingredients in the foot soak and exfoliation. These specialties vary by salon, but I’ve seen some marvelous ones, like chocolate, champagne, margarita, and milk and honey. Delicious! Some women choose a simple and professional look on their hands and really let their personality show on their feet. Why not choose something fun for your summer toes? Perhaps a nautical or patriotic design? Or go bold and bright with some of the trending colors like ocean blues and electric oranges. You’ll feel a little summer excitement every time you look down at your feet. Enjoy your summer! Sources for this article included: www. allure.com, www.leaf.tv, www.luxelounge.com, and www.self.com. Success at Your Fingertips Adding Value Everyone has their own definition of what success means. For some, it’s a specific list of wants; “things” they want to be able to have. For others, it’s about accolades and acknowledgements. No matter what your personal definition of success is, the question is still the same: How do I achieve it? By adding value to others.
By Janet Van deWalle
are always looking out for themselves and don’t take others into consideration. When you can shift the focus to how you can help others and how you can increase your value to them, things tend to start becoming reciprocal. You will find more success in all your relationships.
“Price is what you pay. Value is what you get.” —Warren Buffett
“To add value to others, one must first value others.” —John C. Maxwell
There are success stories aplenty out there, but we all must write our own. The stumbling block that I think many of us fall on is we focus too much on the end result rather than on the path we take to get there. We become so focused on hitting specific mile markers, sales goals, or other benchmarks that we neglect the most important aspect: creating value. I have seen it time and again. You take two individuals in the same industry, and one can find great success and another just skims by or fails miserably. Most times, it has nothing to do with the product or service itself, but rather how the individual interacts in the situation. Those people who can truly share and explain the value of their product or service—who can give more value than they take—tend to rise to the top. This is a true statement not only in the business world but also in personal relationships. You know the types of people who
In the business world, whether you are an employee or an employer, you will find more success when you focus on how you can add more value to those around you. As an employee, this may be trying to find new ways to add to the bottom line. As an employer or manager, you may search for ways to add value to employees through job satisfaction. There are numerous ways to add value on both ends. Again, if you shift your focus to benefitting others, you will be amazed at what things start to happen.

Free to be Free With Consideration and Responsibility On July 4, 1776, Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, declaring that the 13 colonies which made up our young nation would no longer be under the rule of the British but would be, instead, a free nation. In that document, our founding fathers listed our rights…our freedoms. Ultimately, brave men and women fought the Revolutionary War in order to win those freedoms. It was hard work. Some thought they were heroes; others thought that what they did was treasonous. Many of them put their lives and fortunes at stake. This month, we celebrate that day. We still want to be free. I overheard some kids talking about how they weren’t free because they always have people…especially the teachers at school and parents at home…telling them what to do. I talked with my grandsons about that conversation. Did they feel free? We talked about all the things they can make decisions about: how they spend the money they get for gifts, what they wear to school, what they fix to eat, how they choose to spend their free time. They realize that, as they get older, though there will be others who tell them what to do, they will still be free to make many of their own decisions. I reminded them that being free is more than doing only what you want to do. To be free, I think we have to realize that we are all individuals. We do not have to think alike, dress alike, act alike, talk alike—we are not clones of some master model. Yes, there are times when we need to agree with others…or at least agree to disagree. Yes,

there are times when a uniform or dress code is necessary…but even then, there’s some leeway for individuality. Yes, there are occasions when certain actions are expected out of consideration for others, such as sitting quietly in church or listening respectfully to a speaker…still, we are usually not forced to remain in those situations. Yes, there are some jobs in which a certain language or terminology is necessary in order to be understood…but that language can usually be left at the workplace. We have the freedom to express our individuality. We also have the responsibility to make sure our search for individuality does not interfere with someone else’s search for individuality. There are ways to avoid things that we find unpleasant, whether it is another person, a place, music, art, entertainment, language, attire, or anything else. Just as we change the station if we don’t like what comes on, we can simply turn away if we encounter something we don’t like. My grandsons and I agreed that being free includes consideration of others and accepting responsibility for ourselves. That’s not a big price to pay. They agreed that they really aren’t suffering too much as kids…even if they don’t always like what they have to do…just like adults. Kids are people, too. Enjoy your holiday. Happy birthday, America! Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Creating a Feel-Good Home The Connection Between Color and Mood
By Robyn V. Powell
Have you ever noticed how spending time in a certain room can evoke a feeling of calm and serenity? Artists and interior designers have long understood how color can dramatically affect our moods and emotions. While one paint color can make a room feel gloomy, a different hue can cheer it up or add a sense of drama. Color can change how furniture looks in a room and even change the perceived size and shape of a room. With the power to influence our state of mind and alter our perceptions, is it any wonder that the challenge of choosing a color scheme for your home can seem overwhelming? It doesn’t have to be. A little color psychology may be just what you need. Decoding color and understanding how it affects your psyche can empower you to make it work to your home’s advantage. While color’s impact on us is somewhat subjective, based on our personal preferences, it’s widely recognized that each color has a psychological value. For many people, bold red stirs excitement. Warm and energetic red can be a fabulous choice for a dining room, where you want to promote conversation and inspire a hearty appetite. Youthful and playful orange does well in a room that is lively and interactive, such as a game room or a home gym. Painting a room yellow is like adding a drop of sunshine. In its palest hue, yellow is delightful in a nursery, while deeper
shades are natural choices for kitchens and sunrooms. Blue is known to induce calm, reducing heart rate and lowering blood pressure. Blue is a great choice for bedrooms or rooms where you want to retreat and relax. Aqua and mint lend a fresh, clean appeal to bathrooms, while green, the color of spring, is our connection to nature and symbolizes hope and renewal. Universally appealing, green can work in any room. As much as color affects a room, tone matters, too. Light colors are airy and expansive and tend to open up a space, making it seem larger and brighter. Dark colors create a more intimate space and can give a room an air of sophistication. When you’re choosing paint colors, ask yourself how you want to feel when you’re in that room. Once you know that, you can begin to use colors that naturally evoke those moods. While neutrals have been popular over the past years, the recent return to bold colors like navy and jewel tones reflects people’s desire to bring color back into the home. Balancing bold color with the calming influence of restful neutrals will ›››

create harmony. If you choose neutrals for walls and floors, you can always add a pop of color with accent pieces. Brilliant and bold hues aren’t just for new or modern homes. Used correctly, they can restore an older home to the way it looked when it was built. Bold yellow against classic white trim can be both stunning and historically authentic. When it comes to exterior colors, however, you may want to tone it down. Consider your home’s size, style, and architecture, and draw inspiration from homes in your neighborhood and region. You can still choose a color that speaks to you, but the best exterior colors are true to their contextual environment. To save time and eliminate anxiety, consider working with a designer. Designers bring an artistic eye and understand color composition. They know how to take floor and cabinet color and tone into consideration when making selections. A few hours invested with a designer can save you from making a costly mistake. Hiring professional painters removes much of the worry associated with repainting your home, ensures quality results, and will get the job done with the least interruption to your life. If you are planning to repaint before listing your home for sale, consider how certain colors can lead to an increase in your home’s value and influence how quickly it will sell. According to the real estate website Zillow, certain colors can boost the sale price of a home by as much as $5,000, while other colors can depress the selling price. After analyzing photos of 50,000 homes that sold around the country, Zillow discovered that homes with yellow kitchens, khaki bedrooms, and pale gray living rooms were associated with higher selling prices. Homes with dark brown bathrooms received lower bids. Color psychology is all about finding colors that resonate with you. Once you’ve discovered how certain colors affect your mood, you can become your own artist and use color as a tool. Channel the moods you most desire and create a home that brings out the best in you and your guests. Life Care Center of Omaha Skilled Rehabilitative Care
By Jackie Byers
In a quiet spot at 60th and Laurel, Life Care Center of Omaha offers skilled rehabilitation and care for people facing many different health conditions. Admissions Coordinator, Stacy Holmon, explains the facility has a variety of treatment options for adults in need of short-term skilled care, including inpatient and outpatient skilled rehabilitation and skilled nursing care. Stacy, a Council Bluffs native, has an Omaha heart. “I grew up in East Omaha, in a close-knit community,” she shares. “I earned my master’s degree in counseling at UNO, and I have 27 years of experience in health care, including vocational rehabilitation, home health care, and now long-term care at Life Care Center of Omaha. I have been here since 2009.” Life Care Centers of America (LCCA) is rated in the top five privately owned care providers in the country. They have flourished in a growing and competitive field. They operate over 200 facilities around the country, and the Omaha facility has been a part of LCCA since 1994. The mantra for LCCA is: “Patients and residents are our highest priority.” Life Care Center of Omaha offers private and double occupancy rooms, all on one level. Amenities include a supplied television and telephone with service for each bed. Patients may bring their own electronics and access the free Wi-Fi. The facility provides laundry, dining, and lots of indoor and outdoor space for patients to enjoy. Life Care Center of Omaha provides free medical transportation for all patients. A beauty salon and barber shop, optometrist, podiatrist, and counseling/ psychiatrist are offered as optional services. The beautifully landscaped grounds offer much green space for strollers, sitters, bird-watchers, and daydreamers. The neighborhood is peaceful and away from traffic disruptions. Of course, all spaces are handicapaccessible. Stacy is justifiably proud of the food service at Life Care Center of Omaha. The dining room is spacious, surrounded by windows and a cheerful open air courtyard. To accommodate all patients and guests, each of three daily meals is served in two sittings. In between meals, healthy snacks are available. “The meals here are delicious, well-balanced, and nutritious,” Stacy declares. “The head dietician has been a part of our management team for 19 years. Our food service wins us praise from patients and guests regularly.” Guests are always welcome and may join loved ones for a meal anytime. The cost for visitors to eat is $2.00 per meal. Stacy is familiar with the high rate of turnover in the field of healthcare. “All of the department heads have been with us for five years or more,” she notes. “This is amazing in a field that has such high demand and

frequent turnover! Omaha has so many hospitals and care facilities. In health care, demand for qualified people to do the job is quite high.” Why do so many patients come to a facility like Life Care Center of Omaha? “Hospitals discharge patients quickly, so the need for therapy centers is constant,” Stacy explains. “We employ registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), certified nurse assistants (CNA), and a specialized wound nurse. We also have occupational, speech, and physical therapists employed by Life Care Center of Omaha. Our nurse practitioner and medical director meet with patients regularly. The medical director also provides a follow-up visit after discharge at no extra cost.” The skilled therapy program stresses home safety. Careful evaluation of patient progress is essential. This involves meeting with the patient, the patient’s family, and the care team to set patient-centered goals. “The patient’s progress is carefully monitored, and the patient’s therapy goals are met,” Stacy says. “Whether it is orthopedic, balance training, continence, or cognitive retraining, we work to ensure a safe and comfortable transition home.” Whether you or your loved one needs short-term skilled rehabilitation or long-term skilled nursing care, Life Care Center of Omaha is an excellent option with a home-like atmosphere. As Stacy states, “Our goal is to provide the peace of mind that your care is complete.” At Life Care Center of Omaha, all payment options are accepted, including private pay, Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance. Exterior Home Makeover It’s More Than Just Curb Appeal
By Anne Yankus
Summer is here, and it’s the perfect time of year to give the exterior of your home a fantastic new look! To really make over your home’s exterior, you’ll want to cover four areas: windows, doors, siding, and gutters. Installing new, insulated windows can provide value in a variety of ways, including making you and your family more comfortable and lowering your heating and cooling bills. First, decide what frame material, style, glazing, and glass tech you want. On the windows you’re considering, check the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) label, which rates a window in four ways: U-Factor, which measures how highly insulated a window is; Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, which measures how well a window resists heat gain; Visible Transmittance, which measures how much light passes through a window; and Air Leakage, which measures how much air will go through the window. There are also warranties to consider. Most companies will boast having a “lifetime” warranty for their windows, but experts advise not to take this at face value. Is the warranty for the life of the window, for the life of the house, or for your tenure at the house? Ask the company for references or check for reviews, and ask references how efficiently any warranty-related service calls were handled. What exterior makeover would be complete without a new front door? There are several types to choose from, including steel
entry, fiberglass, and wood. Steel entry doors are the cheapest option but have the shortest longevity. Fiberglass doors are a good middle-of-the-road option. Wooden doors are the most expensive but can last the longest, with proper maintenance. A front door is only as good as its locks. Traditional knob locks are handy but vulnerable to break-ins. If you’re going to use a knob lock on your exterior door, it’s a good idea to also have a dead bolt lock. Dead bolt locks are the most popular lock for front doors, as they are highly secure and cost-effective. They come in four types: single, double, jimmy proof, and captive. A more modern option is having a keyless entry pad, which is essentially a deadbolt lock that uses a keypad (touch or card) instead of a physical key. Now you’ll want some nice, new siding to go with those windows and doors. The most popular kinds of siding include vinyl, wood, brick, stucco, stone or stone veneer, and fibercement. Vinyl siding is low-cost and easy to maintain. Wood siding comes in clapboard, shakes, or shingles. Wood siding can be very durable when painted and properly maintained. ›››

Brick siding can be made from genuine brick or brick veneer. If properly installed, it can last as long as your house. Traditional stucco, like brick, can last the lifetime of your house when it’s properly installed, but, when it’s not installed properly, you run the risk of unwanted surface cracks. Stone siding can add a durable and timeless finish to your house; stone veneer provides a lighter weight and less expensive alternative to natural stone. Fibercement siding gives the appearance of masonry, stucco, or wood without the high price tag. In addition to being lowmaintenance, fiber-cement is also nonflammable and termite-resistant. The last element in the exterior makeover is gutters. The best gutters are always the low-maintenance kind! One such option is gutter deflectors, which have a solid barrier above the gutters that deflects debris while letting water in. The downside of deflectors is that they aren’t able to keep out 100 percent of needles, dirt, and pollen; during heavier rains, they’re unable to let 100 percent of the water in. Another option is gutter meshes, which use a mesh covering to block leaves. While more effective than solid deflectors at allowing water into the gutters, meshes are vulnerable to ripping or tearing and may still need to have debris cleaned off them regularly. Because there’s no plumbing or electrical wiring involved, some homeowners might be tempted to take on home exterior projects themselves. Before you do, consider the advantages of hiring professionals. Windows, siding, and gutter installation often require working on a ladder, which can be hazardous. With window installation, you’ll also need a system of dust containment inside the house, especially if your home may contain lead paint. You should also look out for warranties that are voided if the product is improperly installed. When considering contractors, you’ll want to get at least three different bids—the more detailed, the better. You’ll also want to research references and check each contractor’s license(s). Making over your home’s exterior is no overnight task, but professional results are sure to be worth the time and money. The Green Thumb
Watch Out for That Sun Saving Your Skin in the Garden By Sharon Knierim
I do a lot of presentations and write a lot of articles about gardening. Sometimes, it occurs to me that I might be misleading some audience members. Don’t be alarmed—this is not a true confession of the heart, but I sometimes tell others something that is maybe a little less than the whole truth. All right, I guess I will confess. One gardening sin committed by many of us is not wearing the proper garments and sun protection that we know we should. Why do we do it? Why don’t we change our ways, when we know we’re asking for trouble? Good questions. But are there good answers? If you possess a troubled soul regarding your gardening wardrobe, you are not alone. We all know that wearing the proper clothing and protection is for our own good, and yet we sometimes find ourselves deviating from the rules. It can’t be helped. Sometimes, bending the rules is a little fun, and isn’t there just a little bit of rebel in all of us? Truthfully, one cardinal rule that is easily broken in my garden is not covering my skin with sleeves and long pants. There is no wide-brimmed hat on my head, and the wearing of common-sense shoes and stockings was left behind long ago. The truth of the matter is that I simply cannot stand all
those garments when the outside temperature hovers around 100 degrees, with a humidity to match. And who can tolerate that feeling of dirt inside shoes and socks? Realistically, not preparing our bodies for the sun’s potential damage is foolish. Having already experienced skin damage due to sun exposure, you might think that this gardener would take extra precautions. Well, I do try…in a half-hearted sort of way. My long-sleeved shirt comes off after about half an hour, to be replaced by a ragged tank top. The long pants are replaced by knee-length pants, which eventually get traded for shorts. Sensible footwear simply does not exist here; it has been traded for an old pair of penny loafers. The uniform is always the same. The intentions are always the same. What is the deal here? Are gardeners stubborn? I prefer to think of us as persistent. We know what

we like, we know what works, and we know what does not make gardening any easier. Some gardening commercials seen on television, or in magazines, or online, feature a woman with a lovely coiffure who looks as though she has just stepped out of the salon. She’s wearing white slacks and a lovely top as she mows her lawn or transplants in the flower bed. I do not know this woman—and you don’t, either. But don’t you envy her a little? In actuality, most gardeners are aware that they are not going to win any beauty contests out there in the garden, so they develop the habit of wearing what is comfortable and dependable. There are no talent scouts or judges in the garden. We might as well be comfortable while we go about our chores. If we are not going to protect ourselves from the sun with proper clothing, the least we can do is use sunscreen to prevent the damage from too many rays. We cannot really reverse the damage that has already occurred, but we can certainly slow down or eliminate future harm. Using an effective sunscreen product is well worth your while. Like a set of trimmers or a hoe, sunscreen is a vital gardening tool and should be taken seriously. A tube or bottle of this product should be kept in our garden kits. It only takes a few seconds to apply! Yes, yes, it may feel hot and sticky, but the alternative is not a very cheerful thought. Each year, dermatologists report an ever-increasing number of cases of skin cancer, even though the public has been repeatedly informed and educated about skin care and the damage caused by overexposure to the sun. If you can’t convince yourself to shade your skin with long pants and long sleeves, spending just a minimal amount of time developing a plan to religiously apply sunscreen can actually make a difference. Trust me…it is well worth considering. Just a little bit of common sense can prevent devastating outcomes. Have fun in the garden sun this summer, and don’t forget to protect your skin. An Inside Look
Brain Balance Achievement Centers Helping Your Child Reach Her Full Potential
By Marge Shoemaker
When we say, “Everything is in balance,” we mean that everything is going well. That is the premise behind Brain Balance Achievement Centers (BBAC). For a person to operate well in society, the two hemispheres (sides) of her brain must be in balance. When a child’s brain is out of balance, she is apt to experience academic, social, or behavioral issues. She might also exhibit impulsiveness, lack of focus, or a range of learning disabilities. She may have trouble maintaining family or social relationships or making friends. According to BBAC, the Brain Balance program was developed in the 1990s by Dr. Robert Melillo—a clinician, researcher, childhood neurobehavioral expert, and noted bestselling author of “Disconnected Kids.” Dr. Melillo began seeing an increase in learning and behavioral issues among his patients. Naturally, their parents were concerned and wanted help. That was the beginning of his journey in developing the Brain Balance program to address those issues as well as processing/learning disabilities and disorders on the autism spectrum. He was ultimately joined by Chip Miller, a successful leader and executive in education management. Together, they developed a program which today includes more than 100 Brain Balance Achievement Centers. In 2016, two BBAC franchises opened in the Omaha area. Cale and Melanie Furstenberg own Brain Balance Omaha at 2974 S. 84th Street. Melanie says, “I have worked with Brain Balance in the Atlanta area for the past few years to help my son improve issues with behavior, attention, and academic skills. Because of the significant improvements I observed, I was very excited to bring the same results to children in the Omaha community.” Teresa Kaelin is a partner in the other franchise in West Omaha, at 17837 Pierce. “My son was struggling,” Teresa recalls. “As a trained occupational therapist, and having worked with kids for 11 years, I knew some things I could do to help him develop physically, but I realized he needed more. Research helped me find Brain Balance.” The program addresses the whole child, with components that include sensory-motor training, academic skills, and nutrition. Parents are required to help with at-home exercises. The staff at BBAC will communicate with the child’s teachers, and online support is provided. Entrance into the program begins with an in-depth assessment. “This enables us to develop a program specifically tailored to the child’s individual needs,” Teresa explains. Results of this assessment are reviewed by the staff before sharing them with the parents. A schedule of in-center sessions is then arranged. Sessions are one hour each, three times a week. Half of each hour is spent on sensory-motor training, and the remainder is spent on cognitive skills.

Parents must l-r: Brain Balance make a three-month or six-month commitment to the Center of West Omaha— program. The required length depends on the child’s Elkhorn/Millard assessment results and is determined at the postCenter Directors/Owners assessment conference. (The length may be extended, if Teresa Kaelin, MS, OTR/L, and Missy Delaney, MS; needed, to address the child’s difficulties.) and Brain Balance Posters on the walls of BBAC illustrate the activities Omaha Owner generally governed by each hemisphere of the brain. Melanie Furstenberg Left-brained people are generally detail-oriented, highly verbal, and logical, with a high IQ. The left hemisphere also controls the small muscle (fine motor) skills, the conscious components of memory and learning, auditory processing, and linear or logical thinking. Right-brained people generally see the big picture, are less verbal and more emotional, prefer tactile learning, and are often less gregarious. The right hemisphere controls the large muscles (gross motor skills), abstract thinking and understanding, and the unconscious components of memory and learning. A balanced brain uses both hemispheres fairly equally. In an imbalanced brain, one side matures more slowly, and the lesser developed side becomes weaker as the stronger side does more. Brain imbalance may cause lopsided skills: extreme strengths and weaknesses; one side distinctly more dominant; delays on both sides. An imbalanced brain may lead to difficulty with learning, relationships, emotional control, appropriate behavior, physical coordination, and comprehension of the big picture. Those with a weakened left brain may have poor skills related to math and reading, fine motor problems, and poor auditory processing. They may also experience low self-esteem and poor motivation. Right brain weakness may be indicated by clumsiness, hyperactivity, impulsiveness, and obsessive or repetitive behaviors. “My own son has improved immensely while on this program,” Teresa says proudly. “We still have meltdowns and problems once in a while, but it’s so much better than it once was.” Her response echoes those found in a booklet of testimonials called “Brain Balance Family Stories.” Parents in the Omaha area can choose between two convenient BBAC locations. Brain Balance Center of West Omaha—Elkhorn/Millard is located at 17837 Pierce Plaza, in the Spring Ridge Shopping Center (402-933-3541 or 402-933-3334). Target-Dated Funds
An Old Wives’ Tale on Wall Street
By George Morgan
The financial gurus on Wall Street tell us that, as we age (I prefer the term “mature”), we need to decrease our exposure to stocks and increase our exposure to bonds. They feel so strongly about this that they have created a product, which they will happily sell to us, that does this automatically. These are called target-dated funds, also known as lifecycle funds. Target-dated funds were created in the early 1990s by a pair of financial advisors working for Wells Fargo. Target-dated funds are actively managed mutual funds that begin with a high percentage of stocks and a lower percentage of bonds. Over time, they sell down the stock portion and increase the bond portion. They are called target-dated funds because the bond portion of the portfolio is targeted to achieve its maximum level when the owner reaches retirement age. There is no universal formula for the relationship between a person’s age and the optimal exposure rate to stocks and bonds. That ratio varies widely among target-dated fund providers, making it difficult for the owners of target-dated funds to know their exact stock/bond mix. Most target-dated funds are held in 401(k) accounts. A vast majority (87 percent) of all 401(k) plans in the U.S. today offer target-dated funds, and American workers have 41 percent of their total 401(k) assets in target-dated funds. One reason for this popularity might be that, in many 401(k) plans, if the owner fails to
pick a fund, her money is defaulted to the age-appropriate targetdated fund. Another explanation for the high concentration of target-dated funds in 401(k)s is that they have the highest payout to the broker who recommends them. If you were to spend some time getting familiar with targetdated funds, one of the things that should jump out at you is the fees they charge. The maintenance fees charged by mainstream target-dated funds range anywhere from 1.5 percent to as much as 2.5 percent. The typical generic stock or bond fund, on the other hand, has an expense ratio of 0.85 percent. Then compare those fees with the fees charged by index funds, which can be as low as 0.04 percent. A 1 percent difference may not sound like much, but for a 401(k) owner with a $250,000 account balance, that is $2,500 a year and $25,000 a decade. With today’s incredibly low interest rates, there are target-dated funds that are charging a 1.5 percent management fee, while the bonds in the portfolio are paying 0.75 percent, giving the owners of target-dated funds a double whammy. The whole premise for target-dated funds is the widely-held

belief that bonds are a safer investment than stocks. An old wives’ tale is something that is supposedly true but is actually false or just superstition. Warren Buffett (and many others) believe that the notion that bonds are safer than stocks is just that—an old wives’ tale. For the past 20 years, the U.S. rate of inflation has hovered around 1 percent. That is about to change. The Federal Reserve has announced that their policy is to begin to raise interest rates, in part because they predict that the rate of inflation is about to return to the 3–4 percent range. Bonds have a face value, which is paid to the owner when a bond matures. During periods of inflation, the purchasing power of the face value of bonds declines. Thus, when a bond matures, the dollars paid to the owner will buy a smaller number of goods and services than they would have when the initial investment was made. Inflation is much more kind to stocks because it increases the value of the nation’s capital goods. For the past three decades, we have been in a declining interest rate environment. When interest rates are falling, the principal value of a bond increases, which means that bonds have long been a positive force in target-dated funds. That is also about to change. As stated earlier, the policy of the Federal Reserve is to raise interest rates back up to historic norms. In a rising interest rate environment, the principal value of bonds declines. Thus, when the target-dated funds adjust their stock/bond mix, they will be selling stocks whose prices are going up and buying bonds whose principal value is falling. The moral of this story is that the safety of bonds is an old wives’ tale. Take a look at your 401(k) to see how much of your investment is in a target-dated fund, especially if you can’t remember what funds you selected. Then, take a look at the management fees that you’re paying. Don’t be lulled into complacency by the story that bonds are safer than stocks—that old tale is probably costing you money.

Advances in Joint Replacement Don’t Let Joint Pain Make Life Miserable By Linda Barnes
My mom’s total knee replacement 35 years ago was a relatively new surgery. Now, with improved techniques and joint design, why live with unrelenting pain and limitations of mobility? More than a million Americans currently choose joint replacement every year. Knee replacement is most common, with hip and shoulder replacement close behind. When joint surfaces break down—from arthritis, old injuries, or just wear and tear—the result can be constant pain and severely limited function. Regardless of the joint, the basic premise is that damaged bone and cartilage are removed and replaced with man-made components. The materials include metals, plastic, and ceramic; a combination of materials is often employed. Most procedures are done in a hospital, on an inpatient basis. Surgery is performed under anesthesia, either general (you’re asleep) or regional (you’re awake but don’t feel pain). Afterward, pain management is an important component of care. Physical therapy and exercise are also extremely important, to restore strength and range of motion. If the patient meets certain criteria, some procedures may be done in an outpatient or short-stay facility. Advantages include reduced cost, fewer hospital-acquired infections, and increased patient satisfaction. Though most joint replacement patients are in the 60–80 year range, younger people with certain diseases or severe injuries are
sometimes candidates. The procedures are usually performed by orthopedic surgeons with board certification and affiliations with such organizations as the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), new joints generally last at least 10–15 years. Mom’s knee replacement in the early 1980s was needed because of damage caused by rheumatoid arthritis. It offered relief from her daily pain and allowed increased mobility. Today, knee replacement is even safer and more effective and is often less invasive, with smaller incisions and shorter recovery times. Now, let’s look at the replacement procedures, joint by joint. Knees: These joints are like a hinge involving three main bones: tibia, femur, and patella (kneecap). Important ligaments hold the joint together. After damaged bone and cartilage are removed, the new joint is cemented into place, or the new joint is placed without cement and a porous surface allows bone to grow into the component. The surgeon determines the best of several options in joint design, based on such factors as age, gender, weight, and activity

level. Procedures usually take 1–2 hours. Technology such as computer-aided imaging and micro-robotic instruments are increasingly used to assist the surgical team. Afterward, antibiotics and strategies to prevent blood clots help ensure a successful recovery. A sequentially inflating device or compression boot may be used to avoid blood clots while the patient is immobile. Ice packs or an ice machine and pain meds help alleviate discomfort. Physical therapy usually begins as soon as possible. Swelling and discomfort are to be expected. A walker will be used in the early days after surgery; the hospital stay is typically 3–5 days. Some patients may need the extra support of a rehab facility or inhome care for a short time. What happens after surgery is as important to success as the joint design and the skill of the surgeon. Prescribed exercises and physical therapy sessions are a must. Full recovery often takes 8–12 weeks or more. Hips: Replacement surgery of the hip (a ball and socket type of joint) is comparable to knee replacement in many ways, such as anesthesia, postoperative pain management, the need to avoid blood clots, and length of hospital stay. Entry for the procedure can be from the front, back, or side. As with knee replacement, specific physical therapy in the hospital, home exercise, and continued physical therapy after release are vital. Some doctors recommend a continuous passive motion machine (CPMM) to restore movement. Complete recovery may take several weeks or months, depending on the patient’s general health, the type of surgery, and how quickly physical therapy and home exercises strengthen muscles and increase range of motion. Shoulders: Also a ball and socket joint, shoulders have the greatest range of motion of any joints. A highly skilled and experienced surgical team is needed for this replacement. As with the above procedures, replacement may be total or partial. In some younger, more active patients, just the joint surface is replaced. Surgery lasts about two hours, and the postsurgical period is, in many ways, similar to that of other joint surgeries. No lifting or driving is recommended until strength and motion are improved. Full recovery usually takes 6 weeks or more. If you’re living with debilitating pain and restricted mobility from a damaged joint, talk with your primary care physician about a consultation with an orthopedic surgeon. Healthy Hydration at Home What’s in Your Water?
By Loretta McCollum
Water is vital to our existence. Over half of our total body weight is water, so it makes sense that if we don’t drink enough water, we can’t maintain a healthy body. It’s recommended that adults consume 2–3 liters of water daily. Other drinks such as juices and milk can help us stay hydrated, but they may also contain significant amounts of sugar. Caffeinated drinks add to our daily fluid intake, but too much caffeine can have a mild diuretic effect. Water is really the best beverage for hydration. If you’re dehydrated, your body can’t flush out toxins and your organs won’t function properly, leading to conditions such as high blood pressure, digestive disorders, and fatigue. Telltale signs of dehydration include dark or scant urine, dry mouth, headache, extreme thirst, and minimal perspiration during physical activity. A good rule of thumb is that if you feel thirsty, you are already somewhat dehydrated. Proper hydration provides many health benefits. Since our blood is about 92 percent water, being hydrated keeps it moving more freely, lowering blood pressure. Water keeps matter moving through the intestinal tract, reducing constipation, acid reflux, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The incidence of bladder or kidney infections decreases significantly with adequate hydration. Water also acts as an anti-aging mechanism by keeping our joints lubricated and by preventing our organs from working overtime. Since water is such an important part of life, it’s imperative that our water supply is as free of contaminants as possible. Your local health department or commercial water company can test your water for levels of contaminants such as minerals, bacteria, pesticides, fertilizers, and chlorine. If the results indicate that your water isn’t as clean as it could be, don’t panic. For every water problem, there is a solution. Over 85 percent of households in the U.S. have hard water—a condition caused by the accumulation of dissolved minerals like calcium, magnesium, and manganese. Hard water is not a human health hazard, but it can damage your home. Mineral deposits build up in your pipes, decreasing water flow to faucets and reducing the life and efficiency of your hot water heater. Spots on your dishes indicate hard water (when the soap combines with the minerals, it won’t entirely dissolve). Hard water also makes it more difficult to rinse soap from clothing, leaving some items with a yellowish cast. A great way to remove minerals from your water supply is to invest in an ion exchange water softener. This device is installed where the water supply enters the home. As the water passes through the softener’s tank, it exchanges the hard minerals for soft minerals like sodium or potassium. The hard minerals remain behind in the tank, sending the softened water through the pipes. There are multiple types and sizes of water softeners available. A local water company representative can determine which type will work best for your home.

Other water treatment systems include reverse osmosis and solid block carbon water filtration. Reverse osmosis is a process in which water is forced through a membrane that filters out impurities and flushes them into the drain line. The system is installed under the sink, and the household water pressure pushes the water through the membrane. (A pump is installed if the water pressure alone isn’t forceful enough.) A wide variety of contaminants, including nitrates, pesticides, and bacteria are removed. This method is most desirable for achieving mineral-free water and eliminating unpleasant tastes and odors. Systems vary by the number of stages or filters and the amount of water that can be processed daily. Water treatment companies install the systems and typically charge a monthly fee. Solid block carbon water filtration is a good choice for those who want an economical, low-maintenance, highefficiency system. Carbon filtration doesn’t require an outside energy source, so it’s relatively inexpensive to operate. The carbon filter selectively removes contaminants and retains healthy mineral deposits. These systems are designed to partner well with municipally treated water. There are countertop units, whole-house units, and under-the-sink units. A water service specialist can help you choose the best system for your needs. Finally, bottled water is arguably the no-fuss, nomuss quality water choice. It’s easily accessible, and it’s regulated by the EPA and the FDA, meaning that bottling companies adhere to strict quality standards. Purified water and spring water are popular choices. Using a water service avoids multiple buying trips, and such services offer delivery options ranging from 3–5-gallon water cooler installation all the way down to single serving bottles. Remember: Water is life, and healthy water is essential for a healthy life. With so many quality water options available, having clean water is as simple as turning on a faucet. A Car For Every Driver Vehicles That Fit Your Lifestyle By Julie Kuntze
Many years ago, when we were dating, my would-be husband drove a rented purple minivan while his car was being repaired. It was fun to dream about filling up the back with a bunch of little babies someday, and it served the basic function of getting from here to there, but it was a total vehicle mismatch. For every stage of life or choice of lifestyle, certain vehicles and options are a better fit than others. Some convenience features, however, are universally beneficial. Once available only on higher-end vehicles or as after-market installs, remote starters and lock/unlock features are now more prevalent, even on base models. Voice controls have improved over the past couple of years and make everything from getting directions to changing radio stations easier. Consumer Reports adds heated seats and steering wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, and spare tires (many manufacturers are eliminating them!) to their list of recommended convenience features. You might think that young, single drivers are most concerned with the image their vehicle projects, but industry experts say that millennials are pragmatic buyers and look first for reliability when they are car shopping. Safety features, such as brake assist and back-up cameras, are also important to this group, as are advanced tech options. Brands that may have been associated with older generations, such as Cadillac,
Chrysler, and Infinity, also appeal to young singles, as they are fun to drive and project responsibility. One example, as noted by Forbes, is the Subaru WRX. They explain that one quarter of this car’s buyers are between 18 and 34 years old; they are attracted to the “reasonable price, exceptional performance, and the cache of the Subaru brand.” Driving means freedom, which is just as important to older drivers as it is to those who are just getting their license. Minor health concerns often affect a person’s ability to drive long before she is ready to give up driving for good, and vehicle manufacturers have started to recognize this. U.S. News highlights a few vehicles chosen specifically for older adults with decreased flexibility. The 2017 Subaru Forester was recommended because it offers great visibility (due to thin pillars and wide windows), is easy to get in and out of, and can be equipped with their EyeSight safety system, which includes features like blind spot detection, pre-collision braking, and lane departure warning (all helpful for someone who has more

difficulty turning her head). Other recommended models include the 2017 Toyota Highlander, 2017 Buick Encore, 2017 Honda Odyssey, and 2017 Kia Soul, all of which offer a balance of comfortable ride heights with good seating positions for better visibility. If you are a biker, boater, skier, hiker, climber, outdoor adventurer, or otherwise sportsminded person, vehicle features you should look for might include sports racks, well-designed cargo space, all-weather floor mats, and all-wheel drive to get where you want to be. The 2017 Jaguar F-Pace is recommended by Outside magazine, which notes the interior space for two mountain bikes (with the seats folded down), an on-demand all-wheel drive system, and its performance on rough terrain as key benefits. They also recommend the 2017 Honda Ridgeline for its good use of space, including a locking waterproof trunk under the truck bed and a rear gate that can swing open or down. Finally, let’s get back to that minivan. Kelly Blue Book describes it as “the family-friendliest vehicle,” having “purpose-built practicality,” and adds, “There are few reasons for owning one other than to raise a family and transport small human beings who don’t drive.” Their top pick is the 2017 Toyota Sienna, noting that it is currently the only minivan with
available all-wheel drive. Other notables in this category include the 2017 Honda Odyssey, 2017 Chrysler Pacifica, and 2017 Kia Sedona, as families especially appreciate helpful features such as spaciousness and the ability to haul cargo. Sport utility vehicles (SUVs) are another option for young families, as they offer many of the benefits of minivans in combination with raised seating. Benefits like flexible space usage, seating for up to nine people (in larger vehicles), multimedia entertainment options, and even logically placed cup holders are all family-friendly features to look for in a new vehicle. Kelly Blue Book recommends the 2017 Toyota Highlander, 2017 Honda Pilot, 2017 Nissan Pathfinder, 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2017 Honda CR-V, 2017 Subaru Outback, 2017 Kia Sportage, and 2017 Honda HR-V in this category. If your next rental car doesn’t quite fit your current lifestyle, you can have fun pretending for a little while. When it comes to a vehicle you plan to drive for more than a few weeks, however, look for the features that best match your lifestyle, and make sure your car works for you. Estate Planning It’s Never Too Early to Make a Plan
By Ashley Anderson
It’s a common misconception that estate planning is just for the rich and the elderly. In fact, any adult who owns anything—a car, a house, or even just a bank account—should have an estate plan to outline what should happen to her possessions after she dies. With a solid estate plan, your wishes can be honored and nothing gets delayed in the court system. When we hear the word “estate,” we may imagine a castle-like home with miles of meticulous grounds. Legally, however, the term “estate” means property or possessions—your estate is simply the collection of your assets. This includes everything you own, from your house to your record collection to the five-dollar bill in your pocket. No matter how large or modest your estate may be, it’s best to plan ahead for its legal distribution upon your death. Most adults are familiar with a last will and testament, but an estate plan can also include trusts, power of attorney, and a living will. Each of these documents plays a role in what is to happen to you and your assets at the end of your life. A last will and testament is the foundation of an estate plan. It details your final wishes for your assets and dependents. This document will ultimately go to court and determine how your assets will be distributed and to whom they will belong. However you want your life savings to be shared, this is where those wishes are documented. Trusts are similar to wills in that they determine where your assets will be entrusted after your death. However, a trust may be less public than a will, may not have to go through certain stages of court, and may afford different tax benefits. Trusts are often used to avoid probate. They commonly deal with certain assets like life insurance policies, where a beneficiary is named to inherit the asset. It’s important to note that trusts cannot specify guardianship of children. Your estate plan should designate a power of attorney (POA). This person (sometimes a family member) has the legal right and obligation to make decisions about your assets or finances on your behalf. This may be necessary if you become incapacitated. Choose your POA wisely—select someone who understands your decision-making process and would not use the power to her own benefit. Another item to consider is funeral arrangements. Your funeral can be pre-planned so your survivors don’t have to figure out those details themselves. Many funeral homes have pre-planning counselors to guide you. Although these details are often included in a will, they should also be recorded elsewhere, in case your will is not read until after your funeral. Make sure that a family member or POA knows where to find this information. An advance directive, or living will, is a legal
60
July 2017
document that states what type of medical care you want to receive if you are unable to make the decision on your own. A living will may include a “do not resuscitate” (DNR) order to allow for natural death and to restrict medical staff from using heroic measures to revive you. Consider your personal health and the quality of life you want to maintain when making this decision. Attorneys with estate planning experience can help you prepare the paperwork for your estate plan. Your attorney should have proper accreditation from an estate planning board or council like the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils (NAEPC). Ask prospective attorneys for their certification or credentials, as well as their experience with estate planning. You may also want to include your accountant or financial advisor when crafting your estate plan. Your spouse and family should also be involved. Once the estate plan is complete, meet regularly with your attorney to keep it up to date. Updates may include major life events, major health events, or significant changes to your assets. Your lawyer should keep a copy of your estate plan. You should also have a copy in a secure but accessible location, like a safety deposit box or home safe. If you don’t have a plan in place, your assets will be distributed according to state law, which may not align with your wishes. In many states, your family may receive only a portion of your estate. If your children are minors when you die, the state will control their inheritance; if both parents are deceased, the court will select your children’s new guardian. Although an estate plan may seem like a morbid, daunting task, it’s important to outline your wishes for the distribution of your assets. Death is a part of life, and you can’t take anything with you! Make sure your possessions and loved ones are considered. Travel Report: Alaska Heading to the Last Frontier
By Jackie Williams
I just learned from the Alaska Visitors Statistics Program report that the primary activity enjoyed by visitors to Alaska is, by far… shopping. Really? I can understand how cruisers like to get off at the ports and walk around the shops, but there is so much more to see and do in this beautiful state! What about the wildlife? The fresh air? The Northern lights? The outdoor adventures? Let’s get informed so that your next trip to the final American frontier can be a truly Alaskan experience. More than half of visitors to the state come via cruise ship (the cruising season runs from May to September). You have the choice of a round-trip cruise, typically from Seattle or Vancouver, or a one-way, cross-gulf cruise that disembarks from either Seward or Whittier. There is a higher satisfaction rate among those taking the one-way, cross-gulf cruises, in case you’re undecided. One-way cruisers see more destinations and then tack on a land package afterward to make for a well-rounded vacation. Everyone is different, though—you will need to consider how much time you have, your budget, and your preferred style of traveling to determine which cruise is best for you and your fellow travelers. If cruising isn’t your thing, you can still get to Alaska without having to drive all the way through Canada. (Not to knock the road

trip—if that’s how you roll, more power to you!) With the addition of new flights to the state, more travelers are taking advantage of travel packages that include airfare, lodging, tours, and meals. The booking of this type of package is definitely a job for your travel agent; they are constantly educated about these kinds of offerings, so it will be easy for them to set you up on a great trip. So, what is there to do in Alaska, aside from shopping? Visitors enjoy wildlife viewing, day cruises, hiking and nature walks, city and sightseeing tours, museums, and taking the train on the White Pass and Yukon route. You can also pan for gold, take a mine tour, or go fishing (of course!), bird-watching, dogsledding, or flightseeing. I admit, I had to look up what “flightseeing” means: It’s sightseeing by plane or helicopter. Wouldn’t that be amazing? Imagine the views and the awesome photos you could take! And it’s not as expensive as you might think. Consider the potential of doing something amazing in Alaska and having unforgettable experiences ›››

that would beat shopping any day. Most people only visit the southeastern part of Alaska, which is understandable, since that is the typical cruise route. Those who take a cross-gulf cruise will visit both the southeastern and south central portions of the state. The top destinations are Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, Anchorage, Glacier Bay National Park, Seward, and Denali National Park. Icy Strait Point is a very popular spot for whale-watching. Let me tell you about two more Alaska locations that should be on your destination list, though most people don’t know about them or don’t consider them: Haines and Sitka. Haines has a population of only 1,374. It is easily accessible from Juneau (a scenic ferry ride or 35-minute flight) and is nicknamed the “adventure capital of Alaska.” Haines is where you can see the world’s largest concentration of bald eagles and enjoy a bicycle tour along the coastline between the Chilkat Mountains and Lynn Fjord. Breathtaking! Sitka is a waterfront community rich in history and culture, where you can experience its Russian heritage and architecture. This October 18th is the 150th anniversary of Alaska Day, marking the transfer of Alaska from Russia to the United States. There will be a weeklong festival in Sitka that you don’t want to miss! So, what do you envision yourself doing in Alaska? For a wilder experience, book an adventure package and stay at a wilderness lodge. Go hiking or hunting, learn to fly fish at a secluded fishing spot and reel in your own Alaskan salmon, kayak near a glacier and then hike it, hop on an expedition cruise and follow aquatic wildlife, or visit national parks with stunning views while on a bear-watching excursion. Oh, I could go on! Take the time to do some easy research as you plan your trip to Alaska. Browse online, read up at the library, look at photos on Instagram, and watch YouTube videos to give you a glimpse of some exciting and beautiful opportunities. Don’t let your trip to Alaska be about shopping—make it about adventure! But do stop and buy a postcard for me…. Enterprising Ideas
Midwest Lightscaping The Art of Outdoor Lighting
By Robyn V Powell
As a proud homeowner, you’ve created a beautiful home, landscaping, and outdoor living spaces. With all you have invested in your property, you shouldn’t be restricted to enjoying it just during daylight hours! Professionally designed and installed outdoor lighting not only accentuates your home’s architecture and enhances the artistry of your landscaping, it expands your living space and extends the time you can safely enjoy it. A well-lit home and property come to life after dark, creating a nighttime atmosphere that is nothing short of magical. After the sun goes down, you and your guests can enjoy your home’s patio, outdoor kitchen, pool, or gardens late into the evening. Investing in outdoor lighting is also a cost-effective way to enhance curb appeal, increase your home’s value, and add an extra measure of safety and security for you and your family. The professionals at Midwest Lightscaping are Omaha’s lighting experts. Owner Josh Reeves brings in-depth industry knowledge and a passion for design to each project. “My goal is to design lighting that creates a beautiful nighttime atmosphere and also provides safety and security for your home or business,” Josh says. Josh graduated from UNO with a degree in business and the dream of one day owning his own business. While in college, he worked full time, a balancing act he credits with teaching him the time management skills needed to run a business. He took on a sales role with a landscape lighting business, and it was a natural fit. After completely immersing himself in the business for two years, he knew it was what he wanted to do. In 2011, Josh made the leap and began his own business. Josh has built Midwest Lightscaping on the principles of exceptional quality, artistry of design, and skilled craftsmanship. “We help people realize their vision for a beautiful home,” he says. “Your landscaping shouldn’t disappear at night.” Properly done, lighting can highlight focal points, accent special trees or plantings, and create a festive atmosphere for entertaining. Lights tucked into shrubs and indirect pathway lighting create an inviting atmosphere as well as extra safety and security. An initial consultation helps Josh understand what clients are looking for. Next, he puts together a design plan. The design phase is the best part, he says. “I spend a lot of time on the design and enjoy coming up with something special. I love meeting with clients at night after we’ve completed a project. The most gratifying thing is seeing and hearing the excitement of a satisfied customer when she sees the finished project
66
July 2017
for the first time.” One client sums it up like this: “Absolutely amazing and more beautiful than I ever expected. Clearly, you made my project your number-one priority, and it is sincerely appreciated.” Josh stresses the importance of working closely with landscape designers to achieve an understanding of how the whole picture will look at night and selecting the right lighting to maximize the effect with the fewest number of lights. One of Josh’s greatest challenges stems from the fact that lighting is often the last project for homeowners. By the time they call Josh, the budget has been spent and, often, the hardscape has been installed. “The best results happen when we are involved with the architect and landscaper during the planning phase,” says Josh. “A lighting project can still be completed in phases, but the pre-wiring is done. Better to plan ahead and know the options before concrete is poured, making it impossible or more expensive after the fact.” Retro-fitting existing systems is a big part of Midwest Lightscaping’s business. Upgrading to LED is a fairly easy process for soffit or landscape lighting and doesn’t always require changing out the entire fixture. “We use high-quality bulbs that are warrantied for five years or 50,000 hours,” explains Josh. “The savings are two-fold—LED bulbs last longer, and they require less electricity. LED lights can be integrated into an existing system over time, as existing bulbs burn out. There is no obvious difference in the light color, so changing them out gradually allows you to spread out the cost.” From design to installation, Josh works to find energy-efficient lighting solutions that will enhance the beauty of your property and add to the value of your home. “Making sure people are absolutely satisfied with the finished job is my goal,” he concludes. “Attention to detail means working lots of late nights to get it right, but I know it will be something people can enjoy for a long time.” Professionally installed outdoor and landscape lighting can add so much to your home. When the sun goes down, light up the night and let the magic begin! For more information, visit MidwestLightscaping.com or call 402-509-2810. WE

Brain Mapping Understanding Your Brain Could Improve Your Health
By Kylie Gumpert
Despite all the progress humans have made over the past few millennia, many mysteries remain. The largest of these is something that can be easy to overlook: How, exactly, do our brains work? No one has the answer, but a process called brain mapping is helping us better understand how and why we think, feel, and act the way we do—and what we can do about it. By figuring out what parts of our noggin light up during certain activities, scientists and specialists are starting to decode the brain’s functions, which could lead to solutions for treating attention disorders and autism or controlling harmful emotional behaviors like rage. Digestion, sleep quality, hormone production, immune responses, heart rate, and so much more is directly or indirectly controlled by the brain. Brain mapping can be used as a tool to help identify problem areas of the brain. So, how does it work? During brain mapping, sensors are placed on your head to measure the electrical activity in your brain (this is called an electroencephalogram [EEG]). The data collected by the EEG are compiled and analyzed in what is called a quantitative EEG (qEEG). Results can then be compared to what is considered a “normal” electrical response. Brain mapping can help show if there is less activity or more activity than there should be in a certain part of the brain. It will also show how well different parts of the brain are communicating with each other. This communication is important for tasks such
68
July 2017
as reading aloud, which requires your brain’s visual and auditory processing neurons to work together. Clinics focused on mental health may offer brain mapping services. Specialists who perform this technique are trained or certified in brain mapping, biofeedback, and neurofeedback (brain training). Biofeedback is a technique in which you are connected to sensors that give you feedback about how different parts of your body (the heart, for example) respond to stimuli like stress. Neurofeedback, then, is a type of biofeedback that is specific to brain activity. It is a noninvasive, drug-free system that may correct irregular brainwaves. Proper brainwave function can significantly increase focus and attention or improve sleep patterns and memory. If a qEEG shows that electrical activity is not within a normal range, neurofeedback processes can be used as a treatment to help regulate activity. These processes may involve having a patient play a video game while hooked up to an EEG. When the EEG shows abnormal brain activity, the therapist conducting the test will stop the video game. Once brain activity returns to normal, she will start
www.womensedition.com
the game again. This continues until the patient is able to recognize the abnormality and then regulate his brain’s electrical response. Neurofeedback processes differ depending on the nature of the patient’s disorder (attention-related or behavioral). A 2014 study on school-aged children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), published in The Journal of Pediatrics, showed that children who received neurofeedback training were more likely to improve their ADHD symptoms than children who received cognitive training. (Cognitive training involves the same sort of repetitive exercises but without the use of sensors to see when changes in the brain are taking place.) These improvements remained six months later. Biofeedback has been studied at Boston Children’s Hospital, with children who struggle with anger management. The sensors in these tests measured heart rate while the children played a video game that involved shooting aliens. The catch? When a child’s heart rate increased to a certain rate, suggesting feelings of anger, her virtual gun shot blanks until her heart rate decreased. This type of biofeedback measured heart rate; neurofeedback works in a similar way but measures brain function. Especially in the case of children, brain mapping may be a noninvasive option for both the diagnosis and the treatment of certain disorders. A qEEG may reveal that a child who was thought to have ADHD actually suffers from feelings of anxiety that cause her to act out. In a case such as this, neurofeedback could help teach the child how to control the way she reacts to situations, helping to reduce her anxiety and the resulting undesirable behaviors. Other conditions that could benefit from neurofeedback include depression, PTSD, addiction, insomnia, and many other brain-related conditions. Although brain mapping is not yet a “mainstream” practice, it can bring you fascinating information about what’s going on in your head and may offer helpful insight into your own behavior. Neurofeedback can provide coping techniques for patients with certain disorders. If you’re interested in brain mapping, search for a clinic in your area or ask your physician or therapist for a recommendation. It’s Allergy Season! What If It’s Your Pet That Has the Allergies? By Kathy Glow
Just as humans are affected by allergies, our pets can be, too. The most common types of allergies dogs and cats experience are flea bite allergies (dermatitis), environmental allergies (atopy), and food allergies. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of allergies in our pets, however, is no walk in the park. Allergies occur when an animal’s immune system recognizes certain substances (allergens) in their environment as dangerous. For most animals, these potential allergens are harmless. However, when an animal with allergies touches, ingests, or inhales these substances, a variety of skin, digestive, and respiratory symptoms may appear as the body tries to get rid of the allergens. Some of the general symptoms of allergies in both cats and dogs are itchy, red, and scabbed skin; increased scratching; itchy, runny eyes; itchy back or base of the tail; itchy ears and ear infections; vomiting; diarrhea; snoring caused by an inflamed throat; swollen paws or excessive paw chewing; and constant licking. And yes, sneezing, coughing, and wheezing can signal allergies, as well. Dogs and cats of any age, gender, and breed can develop allergies. While puppies and kittens as young as five months can show signs of an allergic reaction, this more commonly appears between one and six years of age. Allergic reactions seem especially common in terriers, setters, retrievers, and flat-faced dog breeds such as pugs and bulldogs. In cats, they seem most common in Siamese and Himalayan breeds and mixed breeds. If you suspect that your pet has allergies, the first step is to make an appointment with your veterinarian. She can determine if further testing or an elimination diet is needed. Some veterinarians specialize in dermatology and have specific training and experience in the management of allergic skin disease. (To find one, check with the American College of Veterinary Dermatology or ask your vet for a referral.) Your pet will be given an intradermal skin test to diagnose allergies. For this test, a small amount of each potential allergen is injected under the skin, producing a red, swollen bump if the test is positive. Testing can cost hundreds of dollars but is the only sure way to find which allergens bother your pet. If most of your pet’s symptoms occur during the spring, summer, and fall, it is most likely a pest or pollen issue. Many animals develop an allergy to flea bites. Prevention is the best treatment for flea allergies. Start your pet on an oral or topical flea control medication before the season starts. Most veterinarians recommend oral medication for the most complete protection. If dust or other household substances (cleaners, perfumes, fabrics, cigarette smoke) are the problem, get rid of them. Clean and vacuum all surfaces and bedding on which your pet sits and use unscented litter in your cat’s litter box.

If outdoor culprits such as trees, grass, weeds, mold, or mildew are suspected, weekly bathing may help relieve itching and remove pollen from your pet’s fur and skin. Talk with your veterinarian about which shampoo to use (one with oatmeal or aloe, for example), since excessive bathing may exacerbate the problem of dry, raw, or itchy skin. If your pet has spent time outdoors, wipe its coat and paws with a damp towel to remove pollen and dander several times a day. You could also give your pet fish oil caplets—the omega-3 fatty acids they contain can decrease inflammation, which, in turn, decreases reaction to allergens. Cats and dogs may also be treated with allergy injections, antihistamines, cortisone, or steroids, though these may benefit only a small percentage of pets. If your pet has nonseasonal symptoms of itchiness, recurrent skin or ear infections, or frequent vomiting, diarrhea, or extreme gassiness, it could have a food allergy. To determine if your pet has a food allergy, it will need to be fed a prescription or hydrolyzed protein diet for 12 weeks or so. It will remain on this diet until the symptoms go away, at which time old foods are reintroduced to determine which ones are causing the reaction. Common culprits are beef, chicken, dairy, wheat, corn, certain meat by-products, and fillers found in commercially-made pet food. Talk to your veterinary allergist about which hypoallergenic food she recommends for your pet. Many pets experience some improvement of symptoms in four to six weeks, but keep your pet on the food for at least eight to 10 weeks to assess its response. Occasionally, pets’ allergies can lead to more serious conditions such as bronchitis or asthma, so if you suspect your pet has an allergy, see your veterinarian. Always follow the advice of your pet’s doctor before trying any special diet or medication on your pet, and never smoke around your pets. Positive Perspective
Enthusiasm is Contagious Get Back to Excitement and Fun Enthusiasm is something that most of us find contagious. It’s fun to be around someone who is passionate about what they are doing. Often, it appears as if they are almost childlike when they are talking to us about their business, their children or grandchildren, their home remodeling project, their charity— whatever it is that is currently pushing their buttons! “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson The other thing about being around enthusiastic people is that it, at times, makes us stop and reflect upon what—if anything—is currently pushing our buttons. We find ourselves asking, “What topic of conversation can I bring up that makes me light up like that?” Most of us have experienced times in our lives where we are literally surviving day to day—or even minute to minute—because there are so many demands on our time. It may feel as if finding that feeling of enthusiasm will take WAY too much time and energy! Enthusiasm? You’ve got to be kidding, right? However, these may be the times when we need enthusiasm the most. “Enthusiasm releases the drive to carry you over obstacles and adds significance to all you do.” —Norman Vincent Peale

Now, going from overwhelmed to enthusiasm won’t happen overnight. Just like everything in our lives that we deliberately create, we have to realize that the first step is to make a decision that enthusiasm is something that we want back. The next step is to reflect upon, and make a decision on what brings us the most joy in our lives—what adventure will push our buttons? “Identifying your enthusiasm requires courage and heroic creative vision. You have to believe that what you want is possible for you.” —Marsha Sinetar We may have to start small. If we are really feeling out of control, then maybe the thing we can become most enthusiastic about is having a day off work! It may be something as simple as getting our house straightened up. Perhaps we will become enthused about having a night out with a friend. Just as enthusiasm is contagious from someone who is enthusiastic, enthusiasm breeds enthusiasm within ourselves. If we take it one little step at a time, we may suddenly realize that our energy level has risen and we are ready to pick another—somewhat bigger—subject to become excited about. Little by little, we will look back and be amazed at how simple it really was to get to a more enthusiastic place—and life will once again, be exciting and fun. WE
