Publisher’s Notes

Lessons from Mom Hello, May! Here’s hoping that the coming month is kinder to us than the last several months have been. I am a Nebraska native, and I can honestly say that I have never gone through the weather challenges that this past winter and spring have brought us. The constant snow, then the rain, and then the floods. I hope that all of you are safe and recovering from the weather challenges. The silver lining in all this is how Nebraskans have come together to help neighbors, friends, and strangers. It makes me proud to be a Nebraskan. May is also the month to honor mothers. Mother’s Day has always held a special place in my heart. My mother, Anne, was a very special lady. She passed away almost 26 years ago. To this day, I find myself thinking about everything that she taught me. I was only 38 when Mom died. She was such a strong woman and such an incredible influence on my life. She married my father, Alfie, after a whirlwind six-month courtship. Over the next 10 years, they had six children. My father was an entrepreneur, and my mother ran the house. (I’ll never forget her dreaded words, “Wait until your father gets home!” Looking back on it, my dad was the softy, but we didn’t know that when we were kids!) My mom taught me so much. She taught me how to stand up for what was right. She taught me how to respect others. She taught me how to set a table! She was a very classy lady. She moved to Omaha, from the farm, right out of high school, at the ripe old age of 17. She got a job at Union Pacific, doing key punch—the precursor to computers. Her first financial goal was to buy herself a piano. She saved up her money and bought a beautiful spinet piano that she had for the rest of her life. As a kid, my mother had learned how to play the piano by ear. When she came to Omaha, she took piano lessons so she could read music. She was great! She taught us all how to sing. I love to sing, and she taught us how to hit the notes! I loved my mom and my dad. They were great role models who worked hard every day of their lives. They taught me about right and wrong. They taught me about the importance of having fun. I miss them both! Happy Mother’s Day! I am so blessed to have had Anne in my life. See you next month!

Retro Refreshed for 2019 What’s Old is New Again By Holly Bell

Just like the rest of us, designers love to return to favorite style hits of years past. Their job, however, is to seize these old favorites and tweak the style or fabrication to add a fresh, modern vibe. There are so many new spring and summer trends, but the overall theme is a return to femininity and empowerment, along with feeling confident and comfortable. Let’s look at some upcoming and nostalgic trends that are likely to affect everyone’s wardrobe. Some of the favorite looks for 2019 include tie-dye. Yes, it’s back! This season’s tie-dye has had a modern update with meticulous craftsmanship that creates artistic kaleidoscope patterns in unusual color combinations. High-end designers and fashion influencers are among this season’s fans. More conservative but just as appealing is the return of the blazer. Blazers are everywhere this season, pulling together looks that are traditional yet trendy. Fabrics are a bit retro, featuring tweed, plaids, and stretch knits. Styles run the gamut, from boxy cuts to short and fitted to oversized with dominant shoulders reminiscent of the 1980s. You can’t really go wrong with purchasing a blazer. They are enormously effective at amplifying a simple outfit into a polished look. New this year is the trend of wearing long, fitted shorts with a blazer. Denim is also tracking the “what’s old is new again” update. Bleached denim is on the comeback trail. It seems that people are nostalgic for the old-school feel of comfy, well-worn jeans. Bleached denim comes in an array of styles, from tie-dyed to full-on bleached to ombré. It’s showing up on jeans, dresses, jackets, even shoes! Nothing escapes the bleached trend. How do you care for your bleached denim? It’s delicate, so wash each item by itself and sparingly. Always wash inside out on a delicate cycle and line dry. Jumpsuits are making a big comeback on the runways for spring and summer 2019, and this trend is going forward into the next several seasons. Last year, it was the romper, which proved to be popular with teens. The garment is now elongated into the retro favorite of the 1970s and 1980s jumpsuit. This item of clothing is incredibly versatile! A jumpsuit can be casual with white tennis shoes or sandals but can morph into a dressed-up look with a heel or even a boot in cooler weather. Add some statement jewelry for an overall modern vibe. I prefer the longer length on a jumpsuit because I am short (the one-piece long look elongates the body). For a taller or longer-legged person, the shorter knee length is flattering. Look for a V-neck cross-stretch top for easy in and out. Polka dots will pepper fashion this year,

6

May 2019

www.womensedition.com

adding a touch of whimsy to every imaginable silhouette. The forever cheerful and uplifting pattern will be found in all sizes, colors, and styles. Great for every age, polka dots may rule the fashion landscape. Along with polka dots, bows seem to be appearing on everything from shoes to necklines to jewelry for another whimsical touch. As an elegant counterpoint to polka dots and bows (and for more conservative and tailored fashionistas), we love the classy and neutral tones of the entire spectrum of beige. This incorporates blush, beige, oatmeal, biscuit, and off-white. There is a demure sophistication about head-to-toe beige. It is always polished and appropriate. Along with this season’s blazer, you can bet this color will be a good investment for years to come. It seems like the ’80s vibe just won’t quit, and I love it! Leopard print looks fresh again in blouses, jackets, and shoes. Remember: When wearing an animal print, everything else should be solid and simple, so the focus is on the print. Chanel-inspired chains and chain belts, along with bolder shoulders, add a timely empowerment vibe to fashion this year. Flattering also is the high waist trend. Everything seems to have a comfortable high waist with a tucked-in top. The look is very retro yet very polished. The top that is made to be worn loose instead of tucked is still in vogue, but it’s not as voluminous as in the past. The cut is trimmer and more body-skimming rather than flowing. The comfort of nostalgia is all around us this year, and we can all use a little comfort. Nostalgia is a powerful feeling of good memories and happy times gone by. Nostalgia feels relaxing and safe—what a great way to get summer started! Let’s enjoy these new twists on old looks that bring smiles to our faces! Editor’s Note: Holly has been in the fashion industry for over 30 years as a buyer, boutique store owner, visual merchandiser, and fashion show producer. She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE More information at truluxejeans.com

Grilled Flank Steak Make a marinade for the steak by mixing together 1/2 cup of soy sauce, 1/2 cup of canola or olive oil, 2 Tablespoons of honey, 5 minced cloves of garlic, 1 teaspoon each of salt and pepper, 1 Tablespoon of dried rosemary, and 2 sliced scallions. Place the marinade in a zip-top bag with a 2-pound cut of flank steak. Marinate in the fridge for 2 hours or overnight. Discard the marinade. Grill the steak over medium-high heat for about 4 minutes on each side (or until it is done the way you like). Let stand for 5 minutes. Cut across the grain and serve with tortillas or other roasted veggies and sauce. Three-Bean Picnic Salad Drain and rinse 1 can each of red kidney beans, cut green beans, and cut waxed beans. Pour into a large bowl and add 1/4 cup of chopped red pepper, 3 Tablespoons of chopped red onion, and 1/2 cup of sliced mushrooms. In another bowl or a mason jar, mix 1/2 cup of vegetable oil, 3 Tablespoons of white wine vinegar (or cider vinegar), 1 Tablespoon of Dijon mustard, and 1–2 Tablespoons of Greek seasoning. Shake or whisk the oil mixture and pour it over the beans. Stir. Cover and refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight. Twice-Baked Potato Poppers Scrub 4 large baking potatoes. (All quantities can be doubled to make 8 potatoes.) Pierce each one and rub with a bit of canola oil. Bake at 400 degrees for 1 hour or until baked through. Cut the potatoes in half and carefully scoop out the middles—be careful not to tear the potato shells. Mash the potatoes with enough milk to make them creamy. Add 3 Tablespoons of butter, salt and pepper and garlic powder as desired, sour cream, some crumbled crispy

bacon, 1 or 2 chopped green onions, half a can of chopped chilies, and 1/2 cup of pepper Jack or any other cheese you like. Stir well. Fill the halved potato skins with the potato mixture. Sprinkle additional shredded cheese on top. Bake on a foil-lined cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 10–20 minutes. Roasted Spring Asparagus Clean and trim 1 pound of fresh asparagus. Place on a parchment-lined jelly roll pan. Mix 2 Tablespoons of olive oil with 1 Tablespoon of balsamic vinegar. Sprinkle this mixture on the asparagus. Put several cloves of garlic in the pan around the asparagus. Roast at 425 degrees for 10–15 minutes. Rhubarb Crunch Combine 1 cup of brown sugar with 1 cup of old-fashioned rolled oats, 1 and 1/2 cups of flour, and 1/2 cup of cubed butter. Mix until crumbly, then set aside. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. Pour in 4 cups of cleaned and diced rhubarb, 1 cup of sugar, and 3 Tablespoons of flour. Sprinkle the crumb mixture on top. Bake at 375 degrees for 40 minutes. Adults-Only Island Iced Tea Mix 1 cup of sweet and sour mix with 3/4 cup each of vodka, gin, orange liqueur, rum, and tequila. Shake or mix well. Add 1 and 1/2 cups of cola. Serve over crushed ice in tall glasses. Drink cautiously—these are potent! Editor’s Note: Kate has been an Omaha area culinary instructor since 1997. 7 Oaks Investments Corporation Happy Tenants, Happy Landlord By Marge Shoemaker

Are you looking for a great location to start your business? Have you outgrown your current space and need to relocate? If you answered “yes” to either of these questions, Paul Waggener would like to offer you some advice…and, perhaps, a great location! Paul is the president of 7 Oaks Investments Corporation, a locally owned property management company that owns all the properties it manages. He has been in business in the Omaha metropolitan area for several years, providing commercial, office, and retail space for many diverse businesses. Paul says the primary reason he advertises with Women’s Edition is to appeal to female business owners. “Women business owners make great tenants because they are so passionate about their businesses and very responsible about the commitments they make,” remarks Paul. Before he buys a property, he takes into consideration a list of factors that are necessary for a business to thrive, including location, size, upkeep, and safety. “I would expect prospective tenants to take into consideration factors similar to these,” he notes. “When my tenants are successful, they’re happy, and a happy tenant is a good tenant. It’s a win-win situation!” Paul originally earned his degree in architecture and worked for a local firm. “As a young ambitious architect I would design structures that the engineers would deem impractical,” he comments. “I decided to go back to school and get an engineering degree to find out all the reasons behind the impracticality of my architectural designs.” This education has become invaluable to Paul when determining whether investing in a particular property is a good decision. He looks at the practicality of the building and whether it’s easily adaptable to a variety of tenants. “When a prospective tenant asks if a unit can be redesigned, I want to be able to give a definitive answer. Sometimes, it’s impractical or impossible to divide or customize a space. My educational background and experience lets me make most of those decisions without having to consult a third party,” he states. He also likes to share his knowledge with others, particularly college students who want and need the experience. Paul reminds us that renting space is a 50/50 deal—both the tenant and the landlord have rights and responsibilities, and it’s important that everyone knows what their responsibilities are. The landlord is responsible for keeping the property in good repair, including things like mowing and snow removal, which keep a property clean and safe. To handle emergencies, 7 Oaks Property Management maintains 24-hour phone availability. Cameras in the West Omaha property were installed for security. In addition, properties are checked regularly by management. Tenants must also do their part in keeping

12

May 2019

up the property, and communication is vital to a smooth rental relationship. Paul’s successful business plan is to purchase a property, develop it into an attractive place for business tenants, and manage it successfully to make a profit. That profit is then reinvested into maintaining the original property and purchasing new ones. It’s sometimes a challenge to keep rents reasonable, but Paul strives to treat his tenants fairly. “If we do it right, our tenants are happy and successful. Happy tenants stay. We are rewarded by having few vacancies. That makes us successful, too.” Paul has advice for others who might consider property investment. “Start small, with just one property. Do your homework. Be cautious. Find out if the property is worth it. Keep things in balance.” That’s what he has done, and it has worked out well for him. “This is what I know—I know buildings!” he states confidently. His newest project is an example of how Paul believes in preserving and repurposing historic structures rather than sacrificing valuable farm land for new development. He’s currently developing the Fairmont Creamery Building in the Old Market. The property is made up of three separate buildings that were constructed over a period of 50 years (1890s to 1940s). Together, they make up 136,000 square feet of space. Though further construction would be necessary to make the best use of the space, he maintains that the bones of the buildings are solid. “I’m considering developing it as a ‘mixed use’ property,” he muses. “It would include residential units, office space, and retail businesses.” It’s an ambitious project, but he thinks he’s the right person for the job. “I’ll use all the architecture and engineering principles I learned in school, as well as the experience I’ve gained with other properties,” he concludes. If you’re looking for a location for your new or existing business, check with Paul at 7 Oaks Investment Corporation. For more information about the company or to inquire about available properties, please call 402-3305530 or send a message to office@7OIC.com. You can also visit them online at 7oaksinvestmentscorp.com. The office is housed in Suite 109 of their building at 13304 West Center Road, in Omaha. WE

A Woman’s Work

A Day for All Mothers Every Day is Mother’s Day

By Sharon Knierim

Mother’s Day has arrived, and it is once again time to stop what we’re doing and celebrate our mothers. Whether or not your mother is still living, it’s a very good exercise to reflect on what she has been and still remains and how she has shaped your own life. We all have a mother, and there are probably as many different kinds of relationships between mother and child as there are mothers in this world. Our mother is the first human we know. Even before our own birth, we have learned to recognize her voice. After nine or 10 months of feeding us and protecting us as best she can in her own body, she knows us better than anyone else probably will in our lifetimes. There’s no denying that fatigue and discomfort set in as the baby inside grows and takes up more space toward the end of pregnancy. Finally, the big day arrives, and the baby is born! Pregnancy can be difficult, uncomfortable, and stressful (and labor is no picnic, either), but if you think the hard part of being a mother is over, you might be getting a little bit ahead of yourself. From this point on, life becomes really interesting. From this point on, you will never be alone again. Although this may seem distressing to those of us who enjoy solitary time, it really is one of

life’s wonderful blessings. The companionship and love that grows between mother and child is enduring. With good luck and hard work, it can (and should) last an entire lifetime. If you are a brand-new mother, don’t be discouraged by all the yucky diapers and the spitting up. Feeding time seems to take forever, and your little angel has what feels like a string of constant demands. Remember, you’ll eventually grow accustomed to this new routine...at which time, your baby will change the routine entirely. Learn to be flexible. Motherhood is something like a club. All mothers gossip about and compare their own children to all the other kids in the family

and the neighborhood. Sometimes, the competition can be quite remarkable. You wonder why your baby hasn’t started crawling when your sister’s baby has already crawled over half the county. Unless your baby’s development is drastically different from everyone else’s, worrying about it is probably not worth your time. In the end, babies do everything at their own pace. By the time a child becomes a toddler, we have become so engrossed in their little lives that they are always our first thought and remain number one in our plans, both large and small. Technically, it’s our children who make us into mothers. On the flip side, however, we have to consider our own mothers, who greatly influence the kind of mothers we turn out to be. It can be hard to admit that we listened to what our mothers told us. After all, how could they know anything about being teenagers? A teenaged girl thinks her mother knows nothing about teen guys because Mom has been married to good old Dad for at least a century. Fashion has probably been a hot topic between mothers and daughters since the beginning of time. Teenage boys view their mothers a little differently. Instead of angst, they seem to be split in their opinion of Mom. Maybe that balances things out. Although it is really startling, many of us seem to eventually turn into our mothers. We plagiarize their reasoning, their remarks, and their words of wisdom. How does this happen? When we are very young, we want desperately to be ourselves and to be special. Well, even though we might turn into our own mothers, we are still special. Even more startling is the realization that our mothers were almost always right. I do not know if anyone has ever kept the score on this, but, over the years, mothers prove to be right a great percentage of the time. How do they do that? Their intentions are good. They care for us and want us to be able to make good, strong decisions. This can be truly annoying. Perhaps someday in the future, a generation will understand this early enough in life to benefit from it before they become parents themselves. I wish you a happy Mother’s Day and hope that you will take some time to honor the woman who gave you life and set you on the road to adulthood. If you are a mother, take time to honor each of your children, and let them know how very special they are to you. Happy Mother’s Day to all! WE

Vantage Point

Nancy’s Boutique Bringing Springtime to Your Closet By Jackie Byers

Snowy, blowy winter is finally gone. Venturing out is now possible—after the winter we’ve had, it’s downright thrilling to be enjoying the outdoors! Finding beautiful new spring fashions will help you clear away the winter doldrums for good. At Nancy’s Boutique in Fremont, Nancy has all the newest fashions ready for you. The clothes you’ll find at Nancy’s Boutique are not the same things you’ll find in malls and department stores in the area. “I visit fashion markets in each season, traveling to Dallas, Las Vegas, Chicago and elsewhere, buying unique and elegant items,” Nancy explains. “When you visit my boutique, you are surrounded by well-made, designer clothing, including Tricot Design sweaters and tunics in great patterns and all shades of beautiful. The line by French Designs offers jeans and other pieces in fabulous fabrics. Angel Apparel has a complete line of high-fashion knit wear.” Nancy’s Boutique carries these and many other designers. Nancy’s sharp eye for display shows off complete ensembles, highlighting how each item can shine in an outfit. When you visit this Fremont fashion gold mine, you will see individual pieces cleverly paired together and enhanced with the perfect accessories, demonstrating that the whole is much more than the sum of its parts. “I carry jewelry that highlights the clothing,” Nancy shares. “The unique nature of Sylca pieces has great appeal. The line features statement pieces, necklaces, earrings, and bracelets.” Nancy offers a safe, efficient jewelry cleaner. It is easy to use and is safe for all your pieces, including gemstones and precious metals. “Flawless jewelry really sets off an outfit.” Nancy has other one-of-a-kind pieces on display, including a colorful tote for the frequent traveler. “I also carry the clear bags for events in big arenas. They make life easier for the bag checker and quicker for the attendee.” “One great accessory I found is the skinny belt,” Nancy continues. “It comes in all colors. I keep it in stock because it’s a wardrobe essential. It solves awkward waistline gap, eliminates plumber’s pants, and hides the button on jeans.” Nancy carries seasonal outerwear. She can fit you in a perfect spring coat, jacket, or rainwear. She also offers winter outerwear when the snow flies. “I don’t carry a lot,” she says, “but being both warm and stylish is important to my clients.” You can trust Nancy to help you select something amazing—she has 25 years of experience in the fashion industry. “I started as the elevator operator at a local department store that has since closed. You could say I learned the business from the bottom up, and then back down again,” she chuckles. “I eventually became

the buyer for that store. I opened my own business 16 years ago, and I have always called Fremont home.” On any given day at Nancy’s Boutique, you may Owner Nancy Hoshor find Nancy ably assisted by Deb, Cookie, or Jackie. “Any with her dog, Toby one of them may appear when I need help. My constant companion here is a fluffy white bundle of playfulness.” Toby, Nancy’s Coton de Tulear, is a playful and charming dog. He has his own fan club—people who come to the boutique just to play with him. “I warn all my clients to not put their purses down,” Nancy adds. “Toby is quick to raid a purse for tissues or anything edible.” “My clients travel from all over to shop my store,” Nancy continues. “They know I stock high-style pieces. They stand out because they are buying unique outfits. For the quality I carry, my prices are reasonable, and my clients know that my sale items are priced to move. When it’s time to clear the racks and make room for new outfits, my sale sign says, ‘Buy one 70 percent off, get the second one free.’” Nancy’s Boutique reveals the owner’s expertise in the industry she loves. “I love the fashion business, from shopping the markets, to setting up displays, to helping clients find just the right outfit,” Nancy concludes. “I have many regulars, and I keep them in mind when I am on buying trips.” Make plans to shop at Nancy’s Boutique and then enjoy a light lunch at Polymath right across the street. Her new address is 423 North Main Street, in Fremont. Toby will greet you enthusiastically…while eyeing your purse! Nancy’s Boutique is open Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call the shop at 402-727-4592. Learn more at nancysfremont.com. WE

Fresh Concept

Mommy Makeovers Celebrate Yourself By Kylie Gumpert

In May, we take time to celebrate all the things that mothers do. We let moms know just how much they mean to us…how beautiful and strong they are. We thank them for the things they do every day that make their families’ lives better. We recognize the sacrifices they have made and continue to make. What often goes unrecognized is the toll that childbirth takes on their bodies. For some mothers, electing for certain cosmetic procedures can help them feel rejuvenated and restore their body confidence to its pre-childbirth state. This series of surgeries, sometimes referred to as a “mommy makeover,” can help a mom when sagging skin causes aesthetic issues as well as physical comfort issues. Every makeover varies, depending on a woman’s situation and desires, but a mommy makeover may include procedures like breast augmentation or lift, buttock augmentation, tummy tuck, liposuction, and even vaginal rejuvenation. It sounds like a lot of surgery to have done at once, but there are advantages to a single surgical session. Childbirth often impacts several areas of a woman’s body. Multiple custom surgeries that meet all of a woman’s needs at once means that several areas of the body are addressed at the same time. While this leads to a longer recovery time, it also leads to a single recovery time—once healed, Mom can jump right back into work and life, feeling as confident as she deserves to feel. There may also be a cost savings to undergoing multiple procedures in a single surgical session. Today, many women are integrating non-surgical procedures into their mommy makeovers, as well. These can include non-surgical fat reduction, injectables to tighten or plump skin, and skin resurfacing to rejuvenate the skin’s youthfulness and glow. These types of procedures can be performed on many different areas of the body. A mommy makeover, like any series of surgical procedures, is no small undertaking. The most important thing to keep in mind if you are thinking about a mommy makeover is making sure that it’s what you want for yourself. No woman should undergo surgery because she feels pressured to do so by someone else. On the flip side, a woman who wants to undergo surgery shouldn’t just rule it out because she doesn’t feel like her decision is being supported by family and friends. People’s opinions on modifying our bodies can vary widely. When it comes to making changes to your body, the opinion that truly matters is your own. Most women who have these procedures done are in their 30s or 40s, when they are finished having children. Surgeons recommend waiting to get a mommy makeover until you know you are done having kids, as a subsequent pregnancy will undo some of the work done during the surgery. You must wait at least six months after having a child to undergo these procedures. If you feel that you want some type of rejuvenation but aren’t sure whether

20

May 2019

or not you’re going to have more children, non-surgical procedures are the better choice. Let’s get into some of the specifics for common mommy makeover surgeries. A breast augmentation is used to increase the size, fullness, and balance of the breasts. There are several types of implants today, including saline, structured saline, and silicone. Implants also come in different shapes and structures. Your surgeon can help guide you toward the implant that will give you the look that you desire. Implants are placed through an incision near the breast. The location of the incision also varies, depending on your breast situation, the type of implant you’re getting, and your concerns about scarring. Possible locations include around the areola, underneath the breast, or in the armpit. A breast lift can be done by itself or in combination with a breast augmentation or reduction. This procedure helps place the breasts in a more youthful position after sagging occurs. As with breast augmentation, the location of the incision can vary. A buttock lift can involve an incision and skin and tissue removal from either the bottom of the waistline or where the buttocks meet the upper thighs. A buttock augmentation can be done with implants or by transferring fat that is harvested through liposuction from another area of your body. There are several different types of incisions that can be made to insert a silicone implant made specifically for the buttock area. These incisions can be made toward the top of the buttocks, where they meet the thighs, or in the gluteal fold (to hide any scarring). A tummy tuck (technically known as an abdominoplasty) removes excess fat and skin in the abdominal area and helps restore muscles that were weakened during pregnancy and childbirth. An incision will be made horizontally along the pubic hairline; a separate incision may be necessary around the belly

www.womensedition.com

button. The surgeon will pull the abdominal skin down, trim the excess, and make a new opening for the belly button before suturing everything back together. Liposuction can be performed on many different parts of the body, including the thighs, hips, upper arms, calves, ankles, and inner knee. It is meant for problem areas where diet and exercise don’t seem to have any effect on fat deposits. The surgeon makes a small incision and inserts a small tube with a surgical vacuum. The tube is moved back and forth, which loosens the fat. The dislodged fat is then suctioned out of the body by the vacuum. Vaginal rejuvenation can involve one or several different types of procedures that can help increase comfort, confidence, and even function when childbirth changes the way a woman’s vaginal area looks and feels. A labiaplasty reduces the length of the inner, hairless labia minora, which can become elongated and protrude after childbirth, leading to chafing, pain, and general discomfort. Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct vaginal laxity, a fairly common result of childbirth. Women with more moderate cases of vaginal laxity may choose a non-surgical procedure instead—heating the vaginal tissues with laser energy can also result in vaginal tightening. Patients who undergo the multiple procedures involved in a mommy makeover should expect around two weeks of intensive recovery time, during which they will need to take leave from work. Weight-lifting limits are often in place for four additional weeks after surgery (generally, no lifting anything heavier than 10 pounds). There will also be a lot of swelling, especially if you’ve had a breast augmentation or a tummy tuck. This is normal! Don’t be alarmed if, at first, your breasts are much larger than you were

expecting. It usually takes anywhere from six months to a full year for swelling from these surgeries to fully subside. Finding a surgeon you trust is paramount to the success of your mommy makeover. It’s important to ensure that you’re working with a board-certified surgeon. Check for board certification in a field related to the procedures you want (for example, the American Board of Plastic Surgery). Many qualified surgeons are also fellows in the American College of Surgeons (FACS). Finding a board-certified surgeon isn’t enough. You also need to make sure your surgeon has relevant experience doing the procedures you want to have done. This track record should include before and after photos as well as patient testimonials. Once you’ve found some experienced, board-certified surgeons…your search still isn’t over! Like artists, surgeons have their own styles, so even the most qualified surgeon may not be a good fit for you if your visions don’t match. You will want to meet with several different surgeons as well as other women who have had a mommy makeover. Consult with your own physician, as well as family members and friends, to get recommendations. Once you’ve found a surgeon that you like and trust, you also want to confirm the accreditation of the facility in which your surgery will be performed. This is important for your overall health and safety during surgery. Look for AAAASF, AAAHC, or JCAHO certification. If you think a mommy makeover is right for you, start looking for surgeons in your area! You might just be headed on the path toward a more confident you. Omaha’s Rug Cleaning & Restoration

Where Exotic Rugs Go for a Bit of Love By Elizabeth French

Growing up in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Cameron “Cam” Mayville began cleaning carpets straight out of high school and took to it like a fish to water. “To this day, I just love it,” he says. After graduation, Cam began working at Stanley Steemer. In 1996, he decided to take a leap, both in romance and in business, after moving to Omaha. Cam got married and started Omaha’s Rug Cleaning & Restoration at 10345 Chandler Circle in La Vista. At first, he only cleaned carpets. One day, someone brought him a damaged rug and asked if he could fix it. “I kind of knew what to do, so I fixed it,” he recalls. “All of a sudden, another rug showed up.” As the years went by, rugs would come in here and there, and he eventually established a niche in the rug restoration market. Cam loves the faraway places from which these pieces of history originate. “Rugs that are from Persia, Iran, Turkey, Afghanistan—they’re all different, from one rug to the next.”

Based on the condition of a rug and its dye, rug cleaning specialists must be very specific as to the products they choose to clean the rug. If the wrong method is chosen, you risk losing the precious dye and intricate design of the rug. Luckily, says Cam, “we’re experts in every method.” The team at Omaha’s Rug Cleaning & Restoration offers dry cleaning, low-moisture cleaning, shampooing, full submersion cleaning, and even hand cleaning for fine antique woven rugs. “Every rug is different, so you have to tailor your cleaning method to every single one,”

Cameron “Cam” Mayville, owner

Cam emphasizes. In addition to professional cleaning, they offer top-of-the-line rug pads, fiber protectant, and guaranteed odor removal. When necessary, they repair rugs by hand. Over the span of his career, Cam has seen his fair share of unique rugs coming into his shop. In fact, when Omaha’s Rug Cleaning & Restoration had over 50 rugs from an insurance claim due to water damage, an appraiser from New York City was sent to assess the value of the claim. Cam noticed that one Persian rug had piqued the assessor’s interest as soon as he walked through the door. “I asked him,” Cam says, “before you go, I’d like to know what you think about this rug. He said, ‘I’d give you $1,800 right now for it, but I will tell you that you should be selling it for probably $6,800–$6,900. The design, the age—this rug is worth a lot of money.’” Cam and his team at Omaha’s Rug Cleaning & Restoration conduct a thorough pre-inspection process of every rug that enters their facility to detect any weak spots, problem areas, or stains that need to be removed. Before they can clean the rug, they must examine its back, front, side chords, and fringes, as well as identify the type and age of the dye. Over the years, Omaha’s Rug Cleaning & Restoration has become a real family affair. Cam’s wife joined in to run the carpet cleaning side of the business. Their daughter, Megan, joined the team and found her own fascination in the art of weaving. Cam recalls a rug that was brought into the business for cleaning. It had oxidized, which ate a hole through the base of the fibers, causing

them to collapse. “Megan said, ‘Dad, I don’t want to patch it—I want to weave it.’” She was able to weave in a color to match the rest of the pattern. Her talented save turned a first-time customer into a lifetime client. Like any business owner, Cam wants to run a profitable shop. However, he doesn’t let business competition take precedence over his dedication to quality service and proper cleaning techniques. Cam teaches classes whenever he can, all over the country, to spread his knowledge of best practices to other cleaners. “Many people don’t understand the chemistry; they don’t understand the steps,” he says. Therefore, they can’t provide the highest quality result. He spends a lot of time helping other rug cleaners learn how to do the best job they can. “Do the right thing,” he says. “It’s that simple.” Cam is also dedicated to educating consumers, most of whom are not familiar with the technical aspects of carpet and rug cleaning. On his website, he provides helpful information in the Clients Beware section under Services (check out arearugcleaningomaha.com/rug-customers-beware). From insurance to fiber protection to reasonable estimates, you can find out everything you need to know before you hire a rug cleaning company. For more information, call Cam at 402-212-1275 or visit arearugcleaningomaha.com. Let Cam and his team at Omaha’s Rug Cleaning & Restoration give your carpets and rugs the treatment they deserve. WE

AseraCare Hospice

Making Every Moment Matter By Loretta McCollum

Each day is precious. When a loved one begins life’s final journey, each day feels even more precious. During this arduous time, a nurturing, supportive environment helps ease the burden on patients and their families. The caring team of professionals at AseraCare Hospice helps families navigate their loved one’s end of life with skill and compassion. What is hospice care? The concept is certainly not new. Hospice has existed in some form since ancient times, when it referred to a place for weary travelers to take shelter. Modern-day hospice dates back to 1948, when Dr. Cicely Saunders began working with terminally ill patients in London. The term “hospice” shares the linguistic root with the word “hospitality,” which makes sense. The goals of hospice are to provide care and support, to maintain quality of life for individuals whose illness is not likely to be cured, and to offer support for their caregivers and family members. According to their website, AseraCare’s mission is as follows: “To share our passion for improving quality of life through innovative healthcare, one person, one family, and one community at a time.” Courtney Keller, Omaha AseraCare business office manager and recently appointed volunteer coordinator, explains how AseraCare works. “We contract with local communities to provide services, and we also care for patients in their homes,” she says. By “communities,” Courtney is referring to nursing homes, retirement villages, and assisted living facilities. “We’re focused on providing a comfortable, nurturing environment for both patients and families.” Immediately after a family signs on with AseraCare, their team of caring professionals gets to work. A registered nurse assumes the lead as case manager and assesses the needs of the patient and the patient’s family. A care plan is developed to meet those needs, and care is coordinated with the attending physician, the primary caregivers, and the hospice team. A social worker assesses emotional, social, spiritual, and financial needs, as well as providing direct counseling or a referral. If desired, a spiritual care coordinator, typically a chaplain, provides spiritual counseling or coordinates with the patient’s clergy. These coordinators are also available to assist with memorial service preparations. Hospice aides provide direct personal care for the patient as well as emotional support to both the patient and the family. Any identified needs are reported to the case manager. The family has access to nurses by phone 24/7. Nutritional counseling is also offered, as are music, pet, and massage therapy. A team of dedicated volunteers provides companionship, support, necessary non-medical services, and respite care for the families and caregivers. They also provide emotional support to family and friends at the time of death and during the bereavement period. As the new

volunteer coordinator, Courtney talks about their volunteers with a great deal of pride. “Sometimes, we’re the patient’s only visitors, and we take our role very seriously. We try to plan activities based on the patient’s Courtney Keller, Omaha AseraCare business office interests. It may be singing, fishing, or crafting.” manager and volunteer “We may have group activities or visit a place coordinator that’s special to the patient,” Courtney continues. “We celebrate holidays and special occasions together. We really get to know them, and we often learn all about their lives. It’s like being part of an extended family.” In fact, there is a framed picture in Courtney’s office of a special lady whom she cared for and who she will never forget. “This has definitely changed my life,” she says. Courtney plans to expand the volunteer program by having sensory activities that fit a monthly theme. “For example, we may have a beach month, where we bring in beach items, allowing patients to use their senses, whether it be sight, touch, smell, or taste. By doing these sorts of activities, we are able bring back memories of comfort and joy to our patients,” she explains. “We want to celebrate life and live each moment fully.” Bereavement care for the family is maintained for a minimum of 13 months after a hospice patient’s death. Regular mailings are sent, and support groups meet during the holidays or on anniversaries, which are typically difficult times for families. It’s not unusual for volunteers to remain in contact with families far beyond the 13-month period. Each June, AseraCare holds a Butterfly Release event; families can purchase a butterfly to release in honor or memory of loved ones. A memorial service is held, and refreshments are served. Courtney clarifies that hospice care isn’t always final. “Some people graduate from hospice,” she notes. “Sometimes, they get more fight in them. They’re on their own terms—no one else’s.” That’s what hospice is about: helping patients navigate a challenging phase of life in a purposeful way. If the need for hospice care arises in your family, AseraCare can be a valuable companion on the journey. They have locations nationwide; their Omaha business office is located at 8710 Frederick Street, Suite 100. You can reach them at 402-926-2680 or www.aseracare.com. WE

Summer Body To-Do List Hair Treatments, Scrubs, Facials, Hair Removal, and More! By Loretta McCollum

Summer is on its way! We’re talking bikinis, backyards, bare toes, shorts, and sandals. Summer officially begins in June, but most of us kick off the season on Memorial Day weekend, the first unofficial summer holiday. Will your body be ready? After the icy grip of winter, we’ve been slowly extricating ourselves from our frosty cocoons, rediscovering our unpainted toenails, our hairy legs, and our dull, lifeless tresses. We need a little sprucing up! Let’s take our bodies from “not venturing past my own deck” to “lounging on a beach, sipping a pink umbrella cocktail.” Working from the top down, we begin with lackluster locks. As with many things, what’s old is new again in hairstyles. The 1970s layered shag is trending, as is the ’90s blunt bob. The long, straight hair of the late 1960s is back, along with thick, blunt bangs. Summer is the perfect time to update your color and add highlights. Some of the hottest new colors even sound like summer: white sand or strawberry lemonade for blondes. Brunettes can select white sand highlights or shiny blues and purples. Balayage provides a contemporary look with color transitioning from light to dark, creating natural-looking highlights. Well-shaped brows enhance any face. Your salon may have an aesthetician specializing in brow shaping and tinting. One option

for brow shaping is brow waxing—this is one of the fastest ways to get a great brow that lasts for weeks. Other brow choices include threading and electrolysis. Eyebrow threading is an ancient technique that has recently regained popularity. It’s a precise procedure whereby a cotton strand is twisted around multiple hairs at the same time, after which the hair is lifted from the follicles. It’s relatively painless, and the results last up to six weeks. The more the process is repeated, the sparser the regrowth will be. Electrolysis isn’t new, either, but it’s still popular. An aesthetician sends an electric current into the hair follicle with a small probe, preventing regrowth. Multiple procedures are needed to remove all unwanted hair, but results are permanent. After you have the perfect brow shape, it’s time for tinting. Dark-haired ladies should try going lighter, and vice versa for fair-haired gals. ›››

A facial will slough off that dull, winter skin, revealing a fresher, brighter complexion. There’s a facial for everyone! During an anti-aging facial, a special tool sands away the outer layer of skin, reducing the appearance of lines, wrinkles, and sun damage. That’s followed with collagen or vitamin-infused serums for a smooth complexion. A HydraFacial uses a vacuumlike device to suck stuff like blackheads out of your skin. Who wouldn’t love that? You can’t go wrong with a classic facial to clean, exfoliate, and moisturize. A head and neck massage is often included for a relaxing experience. Now, it’s time to do the whole body. There are body wraps and scrubs to exfoliate, moisturize, detox, and even slim down. Results of slimming wraps are temporary, but they can work wonders just before a summer wedding. For a really fresh start to summer, try a detox body wrap to stimulate circulation and eliminate the toxins that accumulated in your system over the winter. Last but not least, attend to your lovely legs and tantalizing toes. If your post-winter limbs look like you could shave them and donate the hair to Locks of Love, you’re not alone. As with brows, waxing and electrolysis are great hair removal choices. Those with dark hair might consider laser hair removal, which destroys the hair bulb at the root and is permanent. Several treatments are needed, a few weeks apart, but the results are worth it. Like most everything post-winter, we want to add color to our dingy digits. Of course, a pedicure must come first to trim the nails and soften the cuticles. Doesn’t a margarita pedicure sound delightfully seasonal? The feet are scrubbed with a lime salt scrub, followed by lime oil moisturizer. All that’s left is to choose a pretty summer nail color. Artificial nails, while lovely to behold, are hard on your natural nails, so it’s best to reserve them for special occasions. When you do go the artificial route, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) suggests that you choose soak-off gel nails instead of acrylic because they’re a little more flexible. To protect your hands from UV rays, choose a salon that uses an LED light instead of a UV light to cure gel nails. Whether you’re going with artificial nails or just a manicure, the AAD advises against trimming cuticles—it leaves you open to infection. Congrats! Your body is now ready to enjoy all that awaits this summer. Have a few umbrella cocktails for me! Sources for this article included: cosmopolitan.com, forbes.com, webmd.com, and aad.org. WE

Trust the Universe Its Order is Divine “All is truly well.”—Abraham/Hicks Do we believe this? When life is throwing one curveball after another, are we calm and serene because we know that all is truly well? If I am honest with myself, I would say that I know this— most of the time. Once in a while, I find myself rushing through the day, hoping that I will have a moment or two just to “be.” “I trust in the ebb and flow of the Universe. I trust that life is bigger than what I can see. I trust that there is a Divine Order beyond my control. And I trust that no matter what happens, I will be all right.”—Oprah Winfrey Having faith in Divine Order helps me through tough times. If I look back on my life, I know that everything that has happened to me has happened for a reason. Back in the day, when I faced a challenge, I found myself turning to drama. I don’t really know why. All I know is that it seemed to ramp everything up—my blood pressure increased, my voice got higher, I talked too fast, I moved too fast. I was, a lot of the time, on the verge of hysteria. Boy, was that NOT fun. “All the world’s a stage, and most of us are desperately unrehearsed.”—Sean O’Casey

By Janet Van deWalle

Utilizing the affirmation “all is truly well” calms me, reminds me, and centers me. I have gotten to know myself better. I can feel it now when I’m heading down the path of drama. I have learned that my best approach is to step away from whatever situation has caused my stress to increase. I exit the room and I find a quiet place and re-center myself. I know that the Universe always has my back. “Let the world unfold without always attempting to figure it all out. Let relationships just be, since everything is going to stretch out in Divine Order. Don’t try so hard to make something work—simply allow. Don’t always toil at trying to understand your mate, your children, your parents, your boss, or anyone else, because the Tao is working at all times.”—Wayne Dyer I believe this all comes down to letting go and realizing that I can’t control everything and everybody. As a business owner, I was a control freak. It was exhausting! By truly knowing that everything is in Divine Order, I am calmer and more centered. “Invite Divine Order into your life today and a more serene tomorrow will unfold.” Sarah Ban Breathnach Welcome, Divine Order.

Curiosity, Learning, and Adventure My Inheritance from Mom If living a long time necessarily engenders wisdom, then my mother was extremely wise. Mom was born in 1907 and died in 2011, just a few months shy of her 104th birthday. She lived through both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, the World Trade Center destruction, and a good portion of the fracas in the Middle East. In her lifetime, she saw the popularization of automobiles, televisions, cell phones, and computers. Over the years, she worked in a bank, did medical transcription in a hospital, typed notes for a doctor studying the aging, and was secretary to a politician (she went to the Chicago Convention). She lived in eight states, moving her family several times. She was married in her 30s and widowed in her 50s. She experienced a lot over her lifetime. Mom taught us that becoming responsible adults didn’t necessarily mean we had to “grow up.” She always maintained a childlike curiosity and sense of adventure. She was interested in people and events, and she never stopped learning. Sometimes, she would hesitate before agreeing to some adventure. On her 100th birthday, she was invited on a road trip to visit friends in a distant state. “I’m too old to take a trip that far,” she demurred. “I’d be too much of a burden.” Only a few days later, she asked if she could change her mind. “I decided I don’t want to be a rusty gate and never do anything,” she stated. Her travels took her to the Holy Land and Egypt, to parts of Canada, and across the United States.

NOW HIRING

By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS

I was fortunate to be asked to travel with her on some of those trips. She and two of her sisters (they were in their 70s and 80s at the time) planned to drive to New England to see the fall colors and visit a few nieces and nephews along the way. They asked me to go along. (I may have hinted that I’d help with the driving.) I had inherited Mom’s sense of adventure and love of learning, so I didn’t hesitate. That trip took us to London and Paris in Ontario, Niagara Falls, Lake Placid, Lake Champlain, Stowe in Vermont, and through New York to northeastern Maine. We had lunch with relatives at the Trapp Family Lodge in Vermont and stayed with cousins in Maine who took us to see Land’s End, the Bay of Fundy, and the Roosevelt family’s cottage. On the drive home, we visited cousins in New Hampshire and other family in Columbus, Ohio. We visited Lincoln’s cabin in Illinois and toured Tom Sawyer’s neighborhood in Hannibal, Missouri. Friends ask why I still drive to visit the kids in Arizona. The answer is that I don’t want to be a rusty gate! Thanks, Mom, for sharing your senses of adventure and curiosity and love of learning. Happy Mother’s Day! Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Bathroom Bliss High-Tech Remodels Make a Splash

By Robyn V. Powell

Most of us dream of indulging in the kind of pampering found at luxurious spas. Imagine getting that wonderful sense of well-being without leaving your home. A growing number of people no longer see the bathroom as simply a utilitarian room—homeowners everywhere are transforming their bathrooms into stylish personal sanctuaries. New technologies such as smart showers and voice-activated features for lighting and temperature control are just a few of the amenities showing up in 2019 bathrooms. If a bathroom remodel is on your wish list, check out this year’s trends and discover how form and function are coming together in exciting new ways. Apart from personal enjoyment, one of the best reasons to remodel your bathroom is the added resale value it offers to your home. Bathrooms now rival kitchens as the most important room in the house, and realtors say that bathrooms can make or break a sale. Moreover, homes with remodeled bathrooms sell faster. According to the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), a bathroom remodel is likely to recoup 50 percent of the project cost. With energy savings as one of a home’s biggest selling points, rising utility bills make energy efficiency a priority for every homeowner. When planning your remodel, consider items that maximize efficiency. Save money and resources by investing in a tankless water

heater and by tapping into eco-friendly but stylish fixtures such as LED lighting and low-flow toilets and faucets. The shift to warmer shades of gold and brass is a welcome change from the cooler feel of the sleek, polished chrome that was popular in recent years. These lovely, soft-toned fixtures add just the right dimension and luxury to your space. Available in matte, satin, and spun gold finishes, warm metal plumbing fixtures can be matched to accent pieces such as mirrors, light fixtures, and hardware. As an added bonus, a gold finish shows fewer fingerprints and water spots than chrome. This year, bolder, deeper color is being combined with lots of natural wood. The industrial trend remains strong. Create the vibe by choosing black for light fixtures, plumbing fixtures, mirrors, and vanities, and then setting them against a backdrop of gleaming white tile. Subway tile remains popular, though the sizes and shapes are ›››

changing to linear and skinnier tiles. For the ultimate spa-like experience, install a spacious shower equipped with rain shower heads and a seamless glass enclosure. Take luxury to the next level with high-tech features like digital temperature settings to keep shower water consistent and mood lighting that can be programmed with different colors and patterns. If space allows, install a sleek and stylish standalone soaker tub. Furniture-style and floating vanities are forecast to be very popular in 2019 and beyond. Instead of sitting on the ground, floating vanities hang on the wall, usually about 12 inches off the floor, visually opening up the space and creating a seamless, airy feeling. The countertop of choice is engineered stone, which brings the look of natural stone without the maintenance. Non-porous quartz won’t scratch or crack and resists mold and mildew. Concrete is a customizable surface that can be cast in almost any shape or color. Complete your vanity with asymmetrical or geometric mirrors reflecting their smarts with anti-fog and touch-control technology. Nothing compares to the luxury and comfort of stepping onto a heated floor. Say goodbye to slippers and socks! To begin each day on the right foot, transform that cold tile floor into a warm and soothing surface. Under-floor heating can be used with a variety of flooring options such as wood, tile, and concrete. A powder room with a petite footprint offers the perfect opportunity to splurge on more luxurious materials. Add drama with bold wallpaper or a glass or hand-painted vessel sink paired with a unique faucet. Most kids want a cheerful place to wake up every morning. For the kids’ bathroom, choose a vibrant color scheme or a fun motif. Selecting a design and style that kids love will make the time spent there more fun, even if they’d rather be playing than taking a bath! As with any renovation project, sound planning is required. Look for contractors who have experience with similar projects. If your plan involves removing walls, work with an architect. Designers are always on the lookout for new trends and innovations and are excellent resources to help pull your project together. A bathroom remodel is a major investment. Hire the right team and enjoy the lush comfort of a spa-inspired retreat in the comfort of your own home every single day! There’s No Place Like Home! Caring Senior Services Helps You Stay There

By Vicki Jo Walsh

Many of us spend years paying down a mortgage and using our time and financial resources to make our home just the way we like it. Then, as we get older, health problems start to arise, and we’re suddenly no longer able to take care of the home we worked so hard to build! Caring Senior Services can help you or a loved one stay at home. Their large, bright office will make you feel right at home. It has a plush sofa, toys to entertain children, and a large table and chairs that look like they belong in a cozy dining room. You will meet with the owner, June Mourgis, and the administrative director, Shirley Tingley. You’ll be able to sense their commitment and concern for the feelings and needs of their clients. Despite the name, Caring Senior Services is not just for seniors! Adults of all ages may need assistance following an injury, during recovery from a medical trauma, or while living with a permanent disability. Whether the caregiver is taking care of a parent, a child, or a spouse, Caring Senior Services can help with things like bathing, dressing, laundry, meal preparation, transportation needs, or companionship. When you need assistance for yourself or a family member, the first step is to call Caring Senior Services at 402-682-7326. The phones are answered 24 hours a day. Make an appointment to meet with June or Shirley at their Omaha office, which is conveniently located in Miracle Hills at 1045 North 115th Street, Suite 150. At your appointment, a treatment plan will be created, based on the client’s functionality and mobility. The focus is always to maintain the status quo so clients can remain in their present location. Services are identified to ensure comfort and safety for the client, but flexibility is a priority. Some clients need fewer services as they recover from injury; some clients need more services as they age. The list of services can always be modified as clients’ needs change over time. In some homes, an aging parent who can no longer live alone has moved in with an adult child. While this living situation can bring many rewards, the truth is that every caregiver needs a break. Caring Senior Services can provide flexible care to help prevent caregiver burnout. Whether the caregiver needs assistance bathing an elderly parent or needs time off to attend a child’s school event, the team at Caring Senior Services is at the ready to attend to those needs. June, Shirley, and their staff strive to help their clients maintain a sense of dignity while receiving help with tasks they used to do on their own. Every client is different, so Caring Senior Services personally selects the caregiver who is best suited to each client’s

Spring Floor Cleaning Wash Away the Winter!

By Anne Yankus

It’s been a long, messy winter, and your house is probably a little worse for the wear. Now that spring has finally sprung, it’s the perfect time for a deep clean of all your carpets, hard flooring, rugs, and upholstery! As something that probably covers most of your floors, carpet can get pretty dirty over the winter months. Fortunately, professional carpet cleaners can bring their services right to your door. The most popular methods of carpet cleaning are steaming or dry cleaning. Carpet steaming (or carpet shampooing) is a pretty straightforward process. You can purchase or rent a steam machine and clean them yourself, but professionals can offer your carpets a deeper clean. Most professionals use a truck-mounted steam cleaner that will heat the water and detergents to a higher temperature than a purchased or rental unit. The larger and more powerful machines get your carpet cleaner and shorten the time for drying. You’ll need to keep foot traffic to a minimum while the carpet is drying. On the other hand, dry cleaning can be a great option if you don’t have time to wait for the carpet to dry. This method consists of spreading a cleaning agent on the carpet, working the powder

Thinking of Buying or Selling Your Home?

into the carpet with a stiff brush or broom, waiting a couple of hours, and vacuuming the cleaners back up. Hiring a professional lets you avoid having to handle the chemicals yourself. You’ll want to keep pets and children away from the carpet while the dry cleaners are working; once they’re done, you’ve got clean and dry carpet to walk or play on. What about rugs? Throw rugs and bath mats can generally be put into a gentle wash cycle, and larger area rugs can usually be cleaned using the same methods as your carpet. How about the hard floors in your house, like in the bathrooms and the kitchen? You’ve been doing basic sweeping and mopping all year, which helps keep the dirt and salt of winter at bay. In the spring, however, you’ll want to get down and really scrub these floors for a deep clean. While there are many DIY methods out there for cleaning tile and hardwood flooring, most of us just don’t have the time or patience for it. That’s when you call the pros! Like carpet steamers, professional tile cleaners will use a high-pressure machine with hot water and powerful solvents to get a deep clean that you can’t achieve with elbow grease alone. Some cleaning services also offer grout sealing to keep your grout cleaner longer! Professional tile cleaning can last up to three or four years before you need to call the cleaners again. Last, but not least, you’ve got upholstery to be cleaned. Just like clothing, your upholstered furniture should have a tag with cleaning instructions on it. Most tags will have a simple W (can clean with water), S (no water; special solvent-based cleaner only), WS (water or solvent-based cleaners), or X (vacuum only). When in doubt, you can always look up cleaning methods based on the type of fabric. Anything marked with WS can be steam-cleaned. Professional carpet cleaners often bring upholstery attachments to deep-clean your furniture. Like any time you hire a professional, you’ll want to do your research before choosing someone to clean your floors and upholstery. The website for the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is a great place to start. The IICRC not only certifies cleaners to a globally-recognized standard of excellence—they also have a search function to help you find certified professionals in your area. Whether or not you use their search engine to find local cleaners, you’ll want to keep an eye out for IICRC certifications. They certify cleaners for carpet, rugs, stone, tile, and both textile and leather upholstery. Make professional floor cleaning a regular part of your spring cleaning routine. Once your floors have been refreshed, you’ll wonder how you were able to tolerate the winter grime for so many months! Melanoma Is on the Rise What Is a Tan Worth to You?

By Elizabeth French

We all love when the days get longer, the temperature begins to rise, and the wait for summer draws to a close. After months of darkness, our skin happily soaks in vitamin D and develops that golden summer glow that we’ve grown to love. However, a summer of tanning may turn into a life-threatening skin condition: melanoma. Rates of this type of skin cancer have been rising for three decades. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 96,480 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in 2019, and 7,230 people will likely die of the disease. Melanoma affects the cells in the body that produce melanin, so it most often develops on the skin. It can often be successfully treated when it is caught early. However, it can be more serious than other skin cancers because of its tendency to metastasize (spread) throughout the rest of the body. People with fair skin that burns easily, light-colored hair and eyes, or a history of intense sun exposure are at higher risk of developing melanoma. A family history of melanoma or a personal history of melanoma or other types of skin cancer also increases a person’s risk of developing the disease. To diagnose melanoma, doctors perform a simple biopsy, in which they remove a small piece of skin to send to a lab for testing. Since melanomas are generally small, the doctor will often remove the entire lesion in question to avoid another procedure in the future.

Melanoma treatment has several different options, including surgery to completely move the lesion, immunotherapy (using the body’s immune system to fight the cancer), targeted therapy (hindering the growth of specific cancerous cells), chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Patients partner with their physicians, dermatologists, and oncologists to determine the best course of treatment. Even when melanoma is successfully treated, the patient remains at higher risk for developing another case of melanoma later in life. With each case of melanoma comes the risk of metastasis. An important safety precaution is to regularly examine your skin for unusual growths. It can be hard to distinguish a normal mole from a cancerous skin lesion, so the American Cancer Society recommends using the ABCDE rule to help identify which skin spots need attention from a dermatologist.

A is for Asymmetry (when one half of the mole doesn’t match the other half). B is for Border (when borders are irregular or ragged). C is for Color (when a single mole contains more than one color). D is for Diameter (when a mole is larger than 6 mm across, which is about the size of a pencil eraser). E is for Evolving (when a mole has changed in shape, color, or size). If you have a mole that exhibits any of these warning signs or that has only shown up recently, make an appointment with your dermatologist. If you’re in a high risk category for melanoma, it’s a good idea to include a full-body visual examination in your annual physical. No matter what your genetic risk factors may be, limiting your exposure to UV rays will lower your risk of developing melanoma. Simply staying in the shade is one of the best ways to limit your UV exposure. If you’re going to be in the sun, slip on a shirt as an added layer of protection from the sun’s rays, wear a hat, or sport stylish sunglasses that protect the eyes and the delicate skin around them. Be sure to find a hat with a wide brim to protect the most exposed areas of the face, eyes, forehead, neck, and scalp. Many hats now have UV ray protection and even reduce glare from reflective surfaces like water! Of course, it’s vital to wear sunscreen (and to allow it to soak in before jumping into the water). Don’t forget to check the expiration date on that sunscreen! Most sunscreens expire after a couple of years, but some that have been exposed to heat may be less effective over time. Be sure to always have a spare on hand. Finally, don’t forget to avoid tanning beds and sun lamps! You may have heard that UV exposure from tanning beds does not cause skin cancer—this is simply not the case. Just like UV rays from the sun, UV rays from tanning beds greatly increase your risk of developing skin cancer. Even the tiny UV lamps used at nail salons can cause damage to the skin. For a beaming glow without the harmful damage, try a tanning lotion or spray. This safer option is also quicker and cheaper—you can often achieve a darker look in just one session! If you have any questions about your own melanoma risk, contact your dermatologist today. Sources for this article included: cancer. org, skincancer.org, and medicinenet.com. WE

An Inside Look

Reed Law Firm Advocating, Empowering, Informing By Cynthia Jeffrey

We’re all happy to know that many people are living longer and healthier lives. However, that means that many of us in middle age find ourselves in the challenging situation of caring for both the older and younger generations at the same time. As we watch our loved ones age, we need to remember that emotion often interferes with our ability to assess the safety of their environment. The decision to move aging loved ones from their family home to assisted living can be hard to make, but it can’t be ignored. Some people who enter nursing homes are still able to advocate for themselves, and some are not— that’s just the nature of aging. In some unfortunate circumstances, these adults can end up as victims of abuse or neglect. Residents who are no longer in a position to advocate for themselves still need a voice, and that’s where attorney Shayla Reed comes in. Many people find their passion through personal experiences, and Shayla is no exception. When she was a teenager, her aunt was moved from her family home into a nursing facility, and Shayla watched the light slowly fade from her aunt’s eyes. As a young woman, Shayla felt helpless, and the experience was devastating. Years later, she received a call from a person who needed legal help to address a case of nursing home abuse, and she realized that this was her calling. Her mission, and the focus of Reed Law Firm, is to advocate for people who have been victims of nursing home abuse and neglect. Contrary to popular belief, nursing home residents are not all older adults. In some cases, younger people stay for short or long periods for intensive rehabilitation. No matter why a person resides in a nursing home, it’s likely that the residents are at their most frail and vulnerable. Shayla emphasizes the importance of doing our homework before placing our loved ones in nursing facilities, and she offers suggestions on what to look for (or avoid) in a care facility. One place to begin is online at medicare.gov/ nursinghomecompare. This website allows you to search multiple locations and view their overall ratings, health inspections, and staffing. You can also look up specific facilities through your state’s Department of Health and Human Services licensure unit. These two references can provide you with information on a facility’s history that you may not find anywhere else. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, Shayla stresses. You are the primary advocate for your loved one. Ask pointed questions of administrators when you tour facilities, and keep asking questions even after your loved one is in their care. When a facility becomes the

48

May 2019

primary caregiver, they are accountable for your loved one’s care, and your job is to hold them accountable. According to Shayla, the biggest liability that she faces in nursing home care is understaffing. No matter what the reason is for understaffing, there’s no denying that it creates a huge risk factor for substandard care of residents. How? It shows in the time it takes for call buttons to be answered. It shows in the increase of resident injuries. It shows in the increase of rashes on bodies and the growing of bed sores. These are the things we need to check on when we visit our loved ones. It can feel awkward to visibly examine your loved one’s entire body. Shayla suggests accompanying your loved one to doctor’s appointments and asking the physician to complete a full body scan and document the results. Documentation is key to protection. Above all, says Shayla, trust your instincts. If something feels “off,” it probably is. When Shayla gets involved in a case, it is often after a catastrophic injury has occurred. Many people feel guilty that they missed something tragic happening. Shayla works hard to help her clients’ families through this difficult time, and they appreciate it. “Here’s an extra thank-you for all your help,” says Regina. “I was so lucky to have your firm work for me. I appreciate your professional and yet personal attention. Again, thanks.” Shayla may not be able to change the past, but she hopes to change the future for others. She is currently creating a video series to inform and empower caregivers. Knowledge is power, and that’s what you need to be the best advocate for your loved one. You can find out more about her services, view the upcoming video series, and hear what more clients have said at reedlawomaha.com. If you think your loved one has suffered from substandard care in a nursing home, call Shayla Reed and her team at 403-933-0588. It is her mission to be a strong voice for people who can no longer speak for themselves, and she will let you know up front if she can help with your loved one’s case. WE

Growth Investing Versus Value Investing Which Method Brings the Best Return? By George Morgan

There are about 7,700 actively managed mutual funds on the market today. An actively managed mutual fund is one where a professional money manager buys and sells individual stocks to enhance the fund’s performance. There are two major methods used by these professionals to decide which stocks to buy and sell: value investing and growth investing. The value investing approach was developed in the 1930s by Benjamin Graham, who was a professor at Columbia University at the time. He initially taught the approach to students in the College of Business. He later published a book called “The Intelligent Investor,” which is a detailed blueprint on how to make investment decisions using the value approach. The book has gone through numerous revisions and is still in print today. His most famous student is Warren Buffett, who took Professor Graham’s course at Columbia and became a strong practitioner and advocate of value investing. Some value investors treat the methodology almost like a religion—they are the true believers, and all others are heathens. Value investors, begin by gathering financial information on a publicly traded company they are interested in. Then, they calculate what they believe to be the value of the company. This value is then divided by the number of shares outstanding, which gives them what they feel is the correct price of the stock. If the current stock price is below what the investors believe to be the true value of the company, they buy. The assumption is that others will then discover the stock’s discounted value and will begin to buy it, as well, driving the price of the stock up to its real value. When the price of the stock rises higher than what the investors feel is its true value, they sell it. In today’s market, dominated by index funds and electronic trading, there are some issues with the value investors’ assumptions about how stock prices are determined. For the value investing method to work, many other investors must come to the same conclusion about the stock price and follow through by buying the stock. The first problem with this is that investors’ estimates of a company’s net worth can vary dramatically. Second, not a lot of dollars are being invested using the value approach. It takes a lot of buyers to move the price of a stock. If nobody cares, the stock price is going nowhere, no matter how undervalued it may be. Growth investing is decades younger than value investing. Unlike value investing, growth investing does not have a founding father or seminal textbook. Growth investors simply look for fast-growing companies. In the late 1990s, companies like Coca-Cola and Microsoft were the darlings of growth investors. Today, they focus on large tech companies such as Apple and Amazon. Growth investors don’t take the time to

50

May 2019

research a company’s financials and develop a sense of what they think the company is worth. They ignore the price of the stock and believe that a company’s rapid growth is enough to push the company’s stock price upward. How have the value and growth funds performed? They are actively managed mutual funds and, like all actively managed funds, less than 1 percent have outperformed the market over the long term. Over the course of the last half a century, there has been no clear overall winner between value investing and growth investing. Value may be the best performer for several years in a row, and then growth will outperform during the next several years. Over the course of the last five years, however, growth has been the clear leader—in some years, outperforming value by double digits. A primary reason that these two investment approaches are unable to beat the market over the long term is that there are many restrictions placed on fund managers. There are limits on what percentage an individual stock can be of the total value of a fund’s assets. When fund managers reach the limit on their favorite stock, they must buy stocks that they feel are less valuable. When shareholders want to move out of the market or move on to some other hot fund recommended by their brokers, the fund manager must liquidate, sometimes being forced to sell their best-performing holdings. All of these factors inhibit performance. How should you approach growth and value funds as you strive to grow your 401(k)? In one sense, there’s no need to choose—in the long run, both growth funds and value funds will underperform the plain old index fund. This result has changed Warren Buffett from being the icon of value investing to being the poster child for index funds. He has directed that, when he dies, his wife’s financial advisors should put her money in index funds. ’Nuf said. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. Goods and Services Without Leaving Home Local Businesses That Deliver

By Linda Barnes

For many seniors, mobility issues make shopping or going out for services difficult. Savvy businesses in the retail and service industries are meeting the needs of those who want home delivery of things as varied as dry cleaning, groceries, or a soothing massage. Surgery, arthritis, or reduced vision are just a few reasons to take advantage of the many home delivery services. In some cases, we have to give up driving our own vehicles, either temporarily or permanently. If you’re like me, you hate calling the kids to chauffeur you around. I know how busy they are and how much they value their own down time. Luckily, businesses have caught on to this market, and they’re at our service. I can call my pharmacy or order refills online to be delivered the next day. Some pharmacies even offer free delivery. Others add a reasonable delivery charge. It’s a great convenience for anyone unable to get out and about. Having trouble carrying loads of laundry up from the laundry room? No problem! Dry cleaners may offer laundry service with free local pick-up and delivery. Check with your local cleaners and ask about their delivery schedule. Mobile pet grooming services offer in-home appointments to groom your furry companions. This can be a lifesaver if you’re no longer driving (it’s harder to catch a ride with someone else if you’re bringing along a large dog).

52

Home delivery services can help you survive at home, but you want to thrive! Imagine the benefits of in-home massage services. A licensed therapist can improve your mental outlook by bringing relief from pain and stiffness. An in-home personal trainer can bring the expertise and equipment of a gym to your home. Meals are a necessary and enjoyable part of every day, but limitations can make shopping for groceries difficult. Find a grocer in your area who will take orders by phone or online—many are stepping up to meet this need. Online lists make choosing your favorite foods easy, and you can even use coupons. Most add a reasonable fee for delivering the order right to your door. Even with a delivery charge, your grocery bill could actually be lower, since you won’t be tempted by impulse buys that add inches to your waistline or end up expiring in the back of the cupboard. Seniors are not the only ones choosing this service! Busy parents

www.womensedition.com

and those with demanding careers love the time savings, as well. Maybe cooking has become difficult or impossible. Maybe it never was your forte! A whole industry has sprung up in response to the need for home delivery of meal kits or prepared meals. These are especially convenient for seniors and for caregivers. With meal kits, a lot of the preparation is done for you. Easy-to-follow recipes, along with healthy ingredients, make for enjoyable meal times. Most services can cater to special diets like vegetarian, gluten-free, low-carb, or diabetic. Some services focus on elements like grass-fed meats, non-GMO products, and sustainably sourced seafood. Since these meal kits contain produce and meat or fish, they are delivered in special containers to keep them cool and fresh. Another step up in mealtime convenience is the delivery of meals that are prepared and ready to heat. One service I know offers single-serving meals that are chilled, not frozen, and can be heated in the microwave, in the oven, or on the stove top. Pick a service that emphasizes healthy ingredients and whose meals are nutritionally balanced. Perhaps the ultimate in mealtime convenience is a hot meal from a local restaurant, delivered right to your door. We’re all familiar with pizza delivery, but many other restaurants are now entering the delivery game. Even if they don’t personally deliver, they may partner with a service that does. One such service in my town has several restaurant partners from which to choose. You order online at the delivery service website, choosing food from one of their local restaurant partners. A delivery driver picks up your order and brings it to you. It is all managed through technology. Some choices in my town include pancakes, burgers, Italian food, sushi, BBQ, and fried chicken. A final service that can help seniors remain at home is the personal shopper. This person might look for clothing, shoes, gifts, or household items. Some local stores offer such a service without charge; freelance personal shoppers are also an option. In either case, the shopper gets to know you and your tastes, allowing you to remain at home and still enjoy some personal interaction. Home deliveries and in-home services are a boon to seniors who just need a little assistance in order to remain in the home they love. Give it a try! Enjoy Your Own Party! Hiring Professional Caterers

Wedding, graduation, and anniversary season is here! Most likely, you’ll be in charge of a large group gathering sometime this season. So much goes into planning a successful event that we sometimes lose sight of the fact that a party is supposed to be fun—even for the host! You should be enjoying the celebration, not refilling the salad bowl. This problem has one simple solution: Hire a caterer! If you’ve never known the relaxation that comes from handing off the food details to a professional, make 2019 the year you find out. Let’s take a look at a few trends in catering. Catering for a wedding is all about providing guests with a fun and memorable eating experience. One current trend is hiring food trucks. You heard me—food trucks. Does the newlywed couple love tacos? Pizza? Greek food? No problem. If one food truck isn’t going to cut it, a party planner can arrange for multiple food trucks to provide guests with a wide variety of foods. If food trucks don’t fit the happy couple’s style, caterers can always handle any size of traditional sit-down dinner or buffet. For something more personalized but not too far out of the box, many couples are hiring caterers to make and serve their favorite foods. Buffets featuring Mexican food, Italian food, or even just macaroni and cheese with delicious toppings are popular options. Another trend is a late-night snack for guests who have been dancing for hours and need a little something to eat before

heading home. Caterers can prepare street tacos, cookies and milk shooters, warm pretzels, donut holes, and more. Although many weddings are less formal than in the past, casual does not mean sloppy! It’s important to work with a professional who can serve a casual menu that meets professional standards. An experienced caterer can share all the latest trends and help find the perfect menu for any style of wedding. Anniversary parties should also reflect the happy couple. They may want a more traditional sit-down dinner in remembrance of their wedding many years earlier. Hiring a caterer will ensure a delicious, stress-free dinner. Graduation parties are often open house style, where guests come and go. Food trucks that make food to order can be a great option for an open house. Does your graduate love a certain restaurant? Find out if they cater; many restaurants do.

Are you in charge of the company picnic or national sales meeting? Hiring a caterer for a corporate event is a smart solution for a busy administrative assistant. Catering companies can take the worry and stress out of a big company picnic or formal dinner. There are some things to consider to make sure that your catering experience is a positive one. Don’t be shy about asking questions, requesting food samples, and taking ample time to read the contract. Of course, you should always ask them to provide references! Check that they are licensed to meet food safety standards. If they’re serving alcohol at your event, they’ll need a liquor license. Liquor liability insurance, to protect the venue, the caterer, and you, is also a must. Go through the liquor pricing and ask if they offer packages or can change to a cash bar after a certain time. Will their staff handle the money, or do you need to make other arrangements? If you need to provide the alcohol yourself, find out if they charge a separate fee to serve it. Review menu options. They may have specialties or items you hadn’t considered yet. A good caterer will know the latest trends and what foods have worked at similar events. Ask if they can meet dietary restrictions. Don’t forget to try the food! You may find after tasting some menu items that you want to serve something else. Some caterers charge a small fee for tastings. Find out exactly what is included in the caterer’s price—you don’t want surprises in the bill. (You should also find out what your venue provides to make sure you’re not paying for services twice.) What deposit is required? Many caterers ask for 20–50 percent up front and want to be booked at least six months in advance. They can figure out how much food you need when you give them an approximate head count. You also don’t want surprises at the event. Ask what the catering staff will wear and whether gratuities are expected for the serving staff. Even if you have what you think is a basic or silly question—ask! A good catering experience depends on open communication. Caterers want your event to be as wonderful as you do! Choose professional help to make your event a pleasure, for both you and your guests. Tinted Windows Keeping Cars Cool By Brennan Hallock

When you think of a car with tinted windows, the first thing that comes to your mind may be that sports car that pulls up next to you at the light—music thumping—and revs its engine a couple of times before peeling out and zipping ahead of you. In reality, tinted windows are not just to make your car look sharp. They serve an important purpose. With the summer heat nearly upon us, having tinted windows on your vehicle can be a real advantage. Window tinting has several practical benefits. The first is reduced UV exposure inside the car. UV rays impact your skin’s health; if you sit in your car for long periods of time, you expose yourself to a large amount of these UV rays. Your car’s upholstery can suffer, too—UV light can fade the fabric. A professionally installed window tint can block up to 99 percent of UV rays. With tinted windows, you protect your car, your passengers, and yourself. Window tinting also shields your car from the extreme heat caused by the sun during the summer months. Regular glass windows only filter about 30 percent of solar heat, while a professionally installed window tint can filter more than 80 percent. This results in a cooler, more comfortable interior. Tinted windows can make your drive safer in two ways. When the sun is beating down, it can cause glare that makes it

hard to see the road. With window tinting, this glare is reduced or even eliminated. Second, aftermarket window tinting reduces the likelihood that your window will shatter during an accident. The film helps hold the glass together and keeps you from being injured by broken glass. Of course, the purpose of windows in a vehicle is to see through them, so there are restrictions on how dark the tinting can be. If windows are tinted too much, drivers can’t see clearly when driving at night and law enforcement won’t be able to see into vehicles during traffic stops. Restrictions on tinting vary widely from state to state. In Nebraska, for example, front windows are allowed aftermarket tinting up to 35 percent. In California, you are allowed as much as 70 percent. Check with the Department of Motor Vehicles in your state for local rules. Window tinting can be achieved in a couple of different

ways. Some vehicles come with a factory tint on the windows; this is usually done by dyeing the glass. Many people pay to have aftermarket tinting installed. This is generally a film that is placed over the windows. Like any other part of a vehicle, aftermarket window tinting eventually wears out. A professionally tinted window can last up to 15–20 years but is usually changed more often (about every five years). Prolonged direct sun exposure will cause the film to wear out faster, so you’ll increase the life of your window tinting by parking your vehicle inside or out of the sun as much as possible. If you purchase poor quality window tinting, it can show signs of wear within mere months. There are at-home window tinting kits on the market, but it is better to have it done professionally. A trained professional will have special knowledge about which film tint products are the best quality and will be able to install the tinting correctly. It can take special training and great care to ensure that the tinting does not leave bubbles on your windows. Bubbling decreases the longevity and effectiveness of the tinting…plus, it’s an eyesore. When the temperature climbs into the 90s and 100s,

window tinting alone can’t keep your car cool enough to stay comfortable when it’s parked. There are a few other simple ways to help your car stay cool in these extreme temperatures. First, use a sunshade or window visor. This is an inexpensive and simple way to filter the sun when you park your vehicle. Like tinted windows, it keeps your car’s interior temperature lower and helps protect the dashboard and upholstery from sun damage. Another way to cool your car is to keep your windows slightly cracked when the car is parked. The ventilation from having your windows lowered can considerably reduce the heating effects of sunlight. Of course, you need to use discretion when using this method. Consider where you’re parking your car, and make sure that the crack is too small for an arm to fit through it. Another idea is to use a solar-powered fan. Why not take advantage of the powerful sun by having a fan that uses solar heat to run inside the car? Paired with tinted windows, this will make your vehicle cool enough to enter, even on the hottest days of summer. The Good Life

Midwestern Wineries Wine Country Gets Local By Janette Calabro

You don’t have to book a trip to Napa Valley for an amazing winery event. In fact, hundreds of wineries pepper the Midwest and the Rockies, beckoning us in for a taste, a party, or an event. Plan a scenic drive on your way—and don’t forget to pack a bag for an overnight stay. Local wineries are stirring up visitors and excursionists with a new energy that highlights special events with a cozy, even romantic, feel. Gone are the days of traditional “come and go” tour groups. The new vibe radiates a more personal experience with family and friends, exploring delicious wines on fertile Midwest farms or lofty perches high in the Rockies. For some, fancy wines reigned last year, but 2019 punches in a different prediction for people who love midwestern wines. Red blends, chardonnay, and Riesling are high up on the tasting list, as is mead (fermented honey and water, sometimes with fruits, spices, and hops). Local vineyards are growing specialty grapes like cabernet Franc, with some sites climbing high into the Rockies. Cabernet Franc is one of the major black grape varieties for blending cabernet sauvignon and merlot, Bordeaux style. Some say that Bordeaux is making a comeback—if it ever left. In 2019, wine tastes are expanding. While one wine steward favors “light brick reds” as a leader this year, another boasts that classic pinot noir leads the pack. Other praiseworthy wines for 2019 include the German Riesling, great for food pairing and, now, more affordable. Also popular and affordable is French rosé in multiple varieties. Expect a rise in sales for both. Not convinced you know how to taste wine? Follow the 4 S’s (seeing, swirling, sniffing, and sipping), and you’re in the game. See it: Observe the color and clarity, which can be affected by age and process. Swirl it: Gently spin your glass stem to allow oxygen into the wine. Sniff it: Pull back the glass a few inches from your nose, then drop into the glass to better identify the aroma. Sip it: Let a small sip linger in your mouth to let your taste buds savor the subtle nuances. Life is too short not to celebrate, and a good wine can improve just about any celebration. Is your 40th wedding anniversary coming up? Drink ruby red wine (ruby is the traditional gift for your 40th) from a crystal wine glass. Feeling like a grown-up at your 30th birthday party? Invite a few friends to an elegant winery, now that you’re really adults. Giggle at your high school reunion as you impress old friends with your skills in wine tasting. How about scheduling a corporate event once annual sales goals hit that milestone number? A laidback picnic at the family reunion could always use some extra pizzazz—why not add a wine tasting? Remember that caterers and entertainers are often booked months

out, so plan ahead. For holiday parties, book about four months ahead (especially during the Christmas season) for in-the-moment, wine-stoked enchantment. A local winery is a classic venue to tie the knot. Weddings celebrated at the local vineyard will be held in high regard when you and your guests are surrounded by cascading vines and a picturesque backdrop. Most wineries will accommodate perfect food choices for guests and, of course, a great wine menu. Make sure your caterers will have food-prep areas or kitchen space available. Most venues have access to large equipment like microphones, speakers, linens, tents, and lighting. Ask the winery if they have a vendor list that specializes in vineyard weddings. Whether you’re planning a quick visit to attend a great concert or an overnight stay after a wine dinner, choose an idea that embraces your brand and budget. Most wineries require a group reservation for private tastings—per-person tasting fees vary. Often, a deposit is required at the time of reservation. If you cancel, a no-show fee might be charged. Deposits are usually refunded if cancellation is made within 24 hours of making the appointment. Wineries and corresponding events are different, and so are deposits and cancellation policies. Check with your winery for specifics, and schedule appointments well in advance. The fees charged at wineries can vary widely, from $10–$150 per person. These fees depend on the winery and the activity. Midwestern wineries are busiest during summer and fall, so schedule your event at the beginning of the year, and let the good times roll. Let the classic beauty of wine bring enjoyment to your next outing! Sources for this article included: forbes.com, midwestliving.com, and tripstodiscover.com. WE

Worried About Home When You Travel?

“Lock and Leave” at Sunridge Village By Marge Shoemaker

In the past few months, Nebraskans have experienced nearly every kind of adverse weather: extreme cold, below-zero wind chills, blinding blizzards, record snow fall, high winds, and heavy rain. We’ve suffered through icy streets, car-wrecking potholes, and catastrophic flooding. Our homes and businesses have sustained damage from ice dams on the roof and snowmelt runoff in the basement. We worried about damage if we stayed home; we worried about damage if we traveled. Even if we didn’t end up with damage on our property, the worry was still there. As a resident at Sunridge Village, you won’t have those worries. Whether you spend the winter in Omaha or take off for warmer climates, you know that everything is secure. The staff takes care of the shoveling and ice melt. The secure, heated underground garage protects you and your automobile from the elements, and free transportation is available if you’re part of the 30 percent of residents who don’t want to drive. Each apartment has individual heating and air conditioning controls, plus an emergency generator in case of a power outage. Marj moved to Sunridge Village in August of 2018. “My husband passed away a year ago,” she recalls. “We had a good-sized home…a duplex.” When Marj’s neighbor on the other side passed away, the family came from Texas to take care of her belongings. Marj saw how difficult it was for them to go through their relative’s things…having to make decisions about what to keep and what to toss. “I didn’t want my family to go through that!” she states emphatically. She decided to look into senior living communities and asked her daughter-inlaw to accompany her on her quest for new lodging. “Sunridge Village was the last one we visited,” Marj recalls, “and we knew right away that that was where I belonged.” She’s especially appreciative of Sunridge Village this winter. “This is the first winter in 10 years that I’ve stayed in Nebraska,” she relates. “We had a place in Mesa that we went to every year, but the house here was always a worry. Now, if I decide to go somewhere warmer, all I have to do is let the staff know that I’ll be gone.” That’s what Michale Kavan, the marketing director at Sunridge Village, calls “Lock and Leave.” It’s a way to provide peace of mind to Sunridge Village residents who want to leave the area for vacation. Marj has made Sunridge Village her home. She enjoys the outings and activities offered by the activity coordinators, Debi Rose and Tricia. As a matter of fact, Marj is so busy at Sunridge Village that we did this

Marj loves that Sunridge Village is locally Resident Marj owned and operated by Richard Anzalone and his family. in the heated “Richard (or a family member) is here almost every day,” underground garage she reports enthusiastically. “They attend special events and activities and help out when necessary.” Those special activities include parties like “Hollywood Night,” which Michale, Debi Rose, and Tricia organized for watching the Academy Awards. Regular activities include card games like bridge, pinochle, and poker. Other offerings include mah-jongg, billiards, book club, and exercise classes. Sunridge Village residents are active and engaged in life. You have options, and you’re not alone. Themed parties and decorations make Sunridge Village’s fun events “Sunridge Village special and unique. The monthly fee includes was the last one we services such as housekeeping, maintenance help, utilities visited,” Marj recalls, (except for landline telephone and “and we knew right internet), transportation, and so much more. Other services, like away that that was salon and a foot care clinic, are available, and residents pay only where I belonged.” for the extra services they use. Sunridge Village welcomes all inhome health care services which offers residents to age in place. Residents are supplied with a wristband with GPS capability that is easily activated in case of a fall or emergency. “If you’re looking for a place to live for active people 55 plus—you should definitely check out Sunridge Village!” Marj concludes. “The people here are friendly, residents and staff alike. You can be as active as you want to be. They don’t make you take part in activities, but they make sure you know about them so you can make your own decision.” Sunridge Village is located at 13410 Blondo Street, in Omaha. The Green Thumb

Night Magic in the Garden Natural Nocturnal Scents By Sharon Knierim

In ancient times, civilizations like the Romans and the Persians made perfumery into exciting artwork. Their use of scented flowers was extravagant. Royals from these groups often spread rose petals on the banquet room floor up to the height of wine glasses. This, of course, was before the use of wall-to-wall carpeting…but can you imagine the intoxicating scent from so many rose petals? More puritanical societies frowned on the use of perfumes; they felt that scentless lives were better. Their only exception was the use of incense in church ceremonies and rites. As we all know today, the growing of flowers in great abundance and the wearing of perfumes born of flowers have prevailed. Night fragrance enchantment, as the day’s heat is replaced by cooler evening air, has long been recognized as very sensuous. Many nighttime flowers remain either scentless or closed during daylight hours but give over their unique beauty all night long as they open and share their scents. It is very common for night-blooming plants to possess white flowers. Alfred Tennyson recorded the blooms’ increased visibility as night deepens when he wrote, “Now sleeps the crimson petal, now the white.” There actually is a practical reason for the whiteness of these startling flowers during the gloom of night, and

that is to guide night-flying moths. Nighttime is the right time for these moths to romance the flowers. As they do, the moths themselves become perfumed while darting from one blossom to the next. These moths become helpless with romance. They, too, understand that, by day, fragrance acts as a lure; by night, fragrance simply bewitches. Our nighttime fragrance garden begins with honeysuckle, whose sweet and wonderful scent lasts throughout the night and often is blown inside through open windows. That plant acts something like a natural air freshener. If you decide to plant honeysuckle, be sure to give it plenty of room. Honeysuckle loves to spread, and its woody vines will easily overtake an entire flower bed. The best plan for honeysuckle is to give it its own area to grow and thrive. In the tropics and subtropics, the climate makes for many

choices in night-blooming scented plants. In cooler climates, choices are limited, but there are enough annuals and perennials to make the effort worthwhile. When planting a night magic garden, do not use night bloomers only. You will naturally want some blooms to see and smell during daylight hours. Consider what type of perfumed air you want your flowers to bring to the environment. Mixing too many different scents is not recommend. Just as with the use of perfume on our own bodies, too many conflicting scents in a night garden can become bewildering and overwhelming. Instead, scented night bloomers should be spaced far enough apart that they can show off their own fragrance and beauty. Many gardeners enjoy adding a scented night-bloomer to an already existing flower bed or border. Night-blooming plants are best planted en masse, especially if you’re using annuals. Their portability is desirable and convenient! They can be moved season after season to provide fragrance in the garden and can also be used in the house for added beauty. Many of the choices in annuals and biennials must be seed-planted, and biennials require constant renewal. Night phlox is a tender annual with a wonderful nighttime fragrance. Its purple flowers boast a white or lilac center. Nicotiana is another wonderful choice. This plant’s name sounds like it should be smoked, but that’s not why it belongs in your nighttime garden. Gardeners love this annual, whose flowers are among the most fragrant to scent the night air. Dame’s rocket is a biennial whose height of two to three feet places it in the back of the garden. Dame’s rocket is a branching plant that flowers in white, lilac, or purple. It is often open by day but is fragrant only at night. Perennials that offer both scent and beauty are harder to find. Most daylilies are not scented, but there are a few from Japan that are well worth searching for. Of course, the evening primrose is a wonderful choice. Primrose originally comes from our prairies. Today’s varieties are low, with basal leaves. At sundown, a four-inch flower expands, strongly suggesting sweet-smelling magnolia. Take a cue from the ancients and add some sensuous, nighttime scent to your garden this year. Editor’s Note: Sharon Knierim has been a Master Gardener through Iowa State University in Ames Iowa since 2003. Today she lives on a small farm in western Iowa and looks forward to sharing her passion for gardening each month with her green-thumbed friends. WE May 2019

Professional Pet Sitting Pets Can Play While You’re Away By Brie Christensen

As pet owners, making sure our animals are happy, healthy, and safe is a high priority. It’s easy to focus our attention on this when we’re at home with our pets, but what about when we’re away? It can be stressful to wonder whether or not your pet is getting proper care while you’re not around. Whether you’re traveling or just working long hours, it’s important to make sure that you’re leaving your furry friends in the right hands. Finding a trusted professional for pet day care, pet boarding, or in-home pet sitting can really take a load off your mind. Pet boarding and pet day care services have some differences and some things in common. When animals come in for day care, they’re typically dropped off in the morning and picked up later on in the day. With boarding, animals spend the night at the facility. Though individual rates vary among facilities, boarding generally costs less per night than day care costs per day. Owners can expect their pets to be fed regularly and enjoy adequate play time, often with the other pets at the facility. Additional services might include bathing, grooming, or even enrollment in training classes. If the food is provided by the facility, owners should ask about the type of food, the ingredients, and the expected serving size. In many cases, special dietary needs can be accommodated, though this may come at an extra charge. If you request bathing and grooming for your pet, you should inquire about the products that the facility uses for these services. Most facilities, boarding and day care alike, have some requirements for their furry guests. Owners will likely need to provide documentation that their pets are licensed in their city of residence, are current on all required vaccinations, and have had a fecal exam negative for parasites within the past year. Some facilities may require that pets are spayed or neutered, and some may have pets undergo a temperament assessment. While these requirements may seem unwieldy, rest assured that they are in place for the safety of all the animals—including yours. When choosing the right boarding or day care facility, the International Boarding & Pet Services Association advises owners to ask a lot of questions prior to dropping off their pets for a stay. Most of the pet care service industry is not regulated by any governing body, so it can be hard to tell on paper whether or not a particular facility is safe and clean. Don’t underestimate the value of an in-person visit! When you tour a facility, you can see for yourself whether things like cleanliness and climate control are well-addressed. You should also ask about security measures and evacuation plans for emergencies. Inquire about the provider-to-pet ratio as well as how many pets are housed in how much space. Staff certifications and education in pet care should be

shared, as these can make a big difference in the quality of care your pet receives. While boarding and day care facilities can be a great fit, some pets and owners will always feel more comfortable when the pet can stay at home. Luckily, in-home pet sitting is a booming industry in which professional pet sitters can offer anything from scheduled daily walks to 24-hour care at affordable rates. In-home pet sitting typically offers animals individual attention without disrupting their regular routines or removing pets from the home environment in which they are most comfortable. Search online or ask your veterinarian or other pet owners to recommend an in-home pet sitting company. These companies often work with a large group of independent contractors who provide the pet care. Hiring a company instead of an individual generally saves you the time of dealing with background checks, insurance, and bonding—all those things will be handled by the company. Of course, you can certainly find an individual who can provide high-quality in-home pet sitting without going through a company; you’ll just have to do a little more of the homework yourself. Be sure to ask for references and do both a phone interview and a meetand-greet with your pet in your home before hiring. In-home pet sitters should be prepared to demonstrate that they are knowledgeable in pet first aid. You might also ask if potential sitters are certified professional pet sitters (CPPS) through Pet Sitters International. Whether you need regular, daily care for your pet or 24-hour care while you’re away from home, you’ll rest easier if you know your pet is in good hands. Ask your veterinarian and your pet-owning friends for recommendations, and you’ll be on your way to finding the pet boarding, pet day care, or in-home pet sitting services that you need. Positive Perspective

Back to Basics Life is Meant to be Fun “If it feels good, it’s good. If it feels bad, it’s bad.” —Abraham/Hicks I am remembering the importance of reaching for that goodfeeling place in my life. I am remembering that laughter is good. I am remembering that fun is good. I am remembering that life is what I decide it is going to be, and I want it to be positive. I am remembering that like attracts like. I am remembering that life is supposed to be fun. Boy, this feels like coming home. “At the end of the day, if I can say I had fun, it was a good day.” —Simone Biles Years ago, I had weekly meetings with friends to discuss the Abraham/Hicks teachings and philosophy. It was a small group. We had all listened to the weekly cassette…yes, cassette…and we discussed what we had learned. Inevitably, I would ask everyone, “Did you have any fun this week?” Looking back on it, I would guess that my question was quite annoying to everyone in my group. “When you start recognizing that you’re having fun, life can be delightful.” —Jane Birkin Fun is a great thing. time with. My best guess is that you like to spend time with them because they are FUN! “Let go of the people who dull your shine, poison your spirit, and bring you drama. Cancel your subscription to their issues.” —Steve Marboli Analyzing whether we are having fun may seem silly, but think about those people out there who appear to be truly having fun. It may be an incredibly successful business person—Richard Branson comes to mind. It may be your neighbor, who is a stay-at-home parent who adores his or her children. It may be a committed athlete who is always smiling and winning. The common denominator is that they love their lives. They are passionate about what they have made a commitment to. They are having fun, just about every single day. “Edit your life frequently and ruthlessly. It’s your masterpiece, after all.” —Anonymous Editing our lives means making deliberate decisions about everything…about who we are going to spend time with, what movies we’ll choose to watch, what “channel” we are going to tune into every morning. This determines the level of fun in our lives. I’m choosing fun. Today. Tomorrow. Every day. Back to basics. Life is meant to be fun! WE
