Hawaiian Islands are Calling
Points of Interest
Hello, all! September is here. It has been a crazy

summer, with way too much going on! I sincerely hope that you all have had the opportunity to chill—at least to enjoy the outdoors and the beautiful weather. As I sit and write this month’s Publisher’s Notes, it is two weeks from the day that I will be getting married in Kauai. My fiancé’s name is Manny Chavez. We will be getting married exactly seven years after we first met. We have gotten to the point in our lives where we have matured into a couple with a very healthy relationship. We are best friends. We are totally honest with one another. We have each other’s backs. We make each other laugh. We truly love one another. As we were searching for a place to make our vows, the Hawaiian Islands called to both of us. We chose the location of Kauai because neither of us have ever been there. Manny lived on Oahu years ago, when he was in the Navy, but he never made the 30-minute plane trip to this beautiful paradise. Kauai is known as the Garden Island in Hawaii. We also have learned that it is considered the Heart of the World. I love that. Of course, we have looked at videos and have read books on where we are going. My best guess is that we will have an amazing experience. It is going to be a very small wedding. My brother, Tom, and his wife, Kristi, will be joining us. We will be getting married on a beach—yet to be chosen!—at sunset. Manny and I have grown so much with one another. We have gone to a relationship counselor, which has helped us communicate not only with each other but also with others in our lives. I have learned that I have a long way to go, but the great thing is that I want to keep learning. Manny is unlike any person I have ever met. He is always learning, always growing, always working at becoming a better person. He tells me that he wants to become a better man through our relationship…and I want to become a better woman. Manny asked me the other day if I was nervous about getting married. I said no. I asked if he was nervous. He said no. He then said that he just wants to get it done so we can begin our wonderful life together. Made me smile. He always does. Details on the wedding in the next issue!

Welcome Cooler Weather Summer-to-Fall Transitions By Holly Bell
It seems like summer just arrived! There’s no stopping time, though—the seasons speed along, and now it is time to think about how to transition some of your summer pieces into fall. The absolute best item to shop for is a cape…or a poncho, an oversized scarf, or a blanket wrap. These look stylish thrown over anything, from jeans and a T-shirt to a black dress. You will find yourself donning this overlay piece throughout fall and even winter. Just throw it over a summer dress or top in September and continue to layer under it as the weather warrants. Another quick and fashionable way to keep warm this fall is the faux fur vest. It has been popular for a few seasons now and will continue to be a hit. Faux fur is here to stay! Elegant and luxurious, there will be a plethora of novelty vests and colors to pop over your summer tops for a chilly evening. Designers also brought back the belt for fall. Blazers will be hot and may come with built-in belts. Dresses and jackets have also taken on the cinched waist ornamentation. Any and all belt widths will be in fashion, along with the chain belt reminiscent of Chanel looks. If you feel your shape is not so belt-friendly, try a thin one, belted loosely around your center. It adds a fashionable note, is comfortable, and creates a waistline. Lift your spirits with sparkles this fall! We’ll see the addition of shiny fabrics like satin, along with beads and sequin accents. It seems that fashion houses never tire of adding reflective embellishments to their fall and winter collections, and the runways were covered with sparkle and shine this year. The disco ball look will be everywhere. This year, gold shine will be especially popular. Velvet is another popular texture. It was revived last year and is going strong for fall. Try a velvet T-shirt with a summer skirt for a cute juxtaposition of fall and summer. The power shoulder has been sneaking into collections over the last two seasons, and it will be seen in full force for fall. Coats and jackets will definitely be looking to the 1980s. If you don’t want to invest in a new jacket, try purchasing a pair of detachable shoulder pads to insert into your favorite jacket. They get the job done and also bring a cute new look to summer T-shirts and blouses. Cool weather doesn’t mean we have to put away our colors and go back to black and gray for winter. This fall, color will be important and fun! The top color choices that graced the fall runways were every tone of purple, from lavender to crocus petal to a deep, dark purple that I call Prince Purple. Hot pink and fuchsia are also gorgeous for fall— worn with black, of course. You may already have these colors in your summer wardrobe. Just keep wearing them, adding a wrap and boots, and you are right on trend! You can finally put away your tiny purse as we welcome its

heftier counterpart: the oversized tote. The only problem with an oversized tote is that we tend to throw everything but the kitchen sink into it, making it a burden on the shoulder. Lugging a heavy tote around all the time may be detrimental to your posture, though it really is handy to be able to bring an extra pair of shoes and your lunch in your handbag rather than having to carry multiple bags. My take is to nest my tiny purse, filled with my essentials, inside the tote so I can take it out if I need to. When we think of fall, we often think of plaid, and 2019 is no different. However, the plaids this year will be anything but the usual. You’ll see lots of different colors to inspire you. Spots and stripes will also be very strong this coming season. The easiest way to sneak a little wild into your wardrobe is with a leopard print. Teamed with black, it is a universally chic choice. Designers have become quite creative this season, offering zebra and snake prints in vibrant colors! The bright colors will be fun to wear, but don’t buy too many. It is likely a shortlived trend. As we say good-bye to summer, it’s fun to work in some new layers, textures, and shine to bring a fresh look to our wardrobes without doing a complete overhaul. Fashionistas always welcome new ways to wear existing favorites. All you need for a perfect transitional wardrobe is a few new pieces and a little creativity. of chopped sweet onion, and 8 ounces of shredded Monterey Jack cheese. In a bowl, whisk together 5 eggs, 1 and 1/2 cups of half-andhalf, and a few dashes of pepper. Pour the egg mixture over the bacon mixture. Place the pie plate on a cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 30–40 minutes, until the quiche is browned and an inserted knife comes out clean. Olive Toast Appetizers Mix together 1/3 cup of mayonnaise, 1/3 cup of grated Parmesan cheese, 1 Tablespoon of chopped green onion, 1 small can of chopped black olives, 1/2 teaspoon of oregano, and 1/2 teaspoon of curry powder. Spread the mixture on thin bread squares or crackers. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 minutes. Serve warm. Chicken and Veggies Sheet Pan Supper Take out the backbone (this is called “spatchcocking”) of a roasting chicken or two Cornish hens. Remove giblets, if necessary. Flatten the chicken and place on a foil-lined baking sheet. In a bowl, mix 2 Tablespoons of olive oil, 1 Tablespoon of oregano, 1 Tablespoon of thyme, and salt and pepper to taste. Rub the poultry with half of the olive oil mixture. Toss the rest of the olive oil mixture with veggies of your choosing, like small new potatoes, slices of zucchini, and cherry tomatoes. Roast the potatoes and the chicken for 45 minutes at 375 degrees. Add the softer veggies and cook for an additional 15 minutes. Chicken is done when the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees. Tri-Color Pasta Salad Cook whatever amount of tri-color rotini that you need, per package instructions. (like zucchini, squash, tomatoes, green onions, peppers—whatever is in the fridge or garden). Add salt and pepper as desired. You can add canned tuna, salmon, or chicken for extra protein. Taste and adjust the amount of Italian dressing. Garnish with 1/4 cup of shredded cheese. Refrigerate until needed. Broccoli Shrimp Sheet Pan Supper Cut a generous head of broccoli into florets and wash them. Place the broccoli on a foil-lined baking sheet. Drizzle with olive or canola oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast at 400 degrees for 10–15 minutes. While the broccoli is roasting, peel, de-vein, and rinse 2 pounds of shrimp. Make a marinade by mixing 1/4 cup of soy sauce with 2 Tablespoons of sweet red chili sauce, 2 Tablespoons of honey, 1 teaspoon of lemon juice, and a dash of ginger. Put the shrimp in the marinade and mix to coat. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and push the broccoli to one side of the pan. Spread the shrimp on the other side of the pan. Bake for another 10 minutes, until the shrimp turn pink. Kentucky Slushies Boil 2 cups of water. Add 5 tea bags and turn off the heat to let the tea steep for 10 minutes. Remove the tea bags and let cool. Mix a 12-ounce can of frozen lemonade concentrate and a 12-ounce can of frozen orange juice concentrate with 7 cups of water. Add 3 cups of bourbon and the cooled tea. Mix well and put in the freezer. To serve, mix a scoop or two into a tall glass and add 7-Up or Sprite. Stress-Free Medicare Transition—It’s Possible! Laura Weiler Helps You Navigate By Jackie Byers
Preparing for retirement can be a very exciting time! By the time retirement comes, you’ve hopefully saved a little money so you don’t run out of dollars before you run out of years and the way you receive your healthcare benefits changes drastically. Laura Weiler focuses her practice on helping people understand Medicare. That includes the timelines of what needs to be done, and when, and in what order, to avoid penalties; what options are available if you continue to work past 65; and explaining Medicare health plans. Once people turn 64, their mailboxes are bombarded with literature about Medicare. At first, many people read through it, hoping that they’ll understand the Medicare maze, but Laura consistently hears that most people become overwhelmed by all the mail. What people are looking for is someone they can trust to explain Medicare and present their options. Laura translates that large pile of literature into English in about 15 minutes. In her job, Laura notes, she considers herself to be both a teacher and a student. She says Medicare is not that complicated—applying it to each person’s situation is where the extra knowledge is needed. Laura is required to stay educated on Medicare changes by taking annual certifications and testing. Laura’s favorite part of her job is being an educator. She has gotten positive feedback on the several Medicare 101 presentations she has done at local libraries. Her groups have been anywhere from three to 50 people. She provides a simple-to-follow handout and goes over the basics. With the smaller groups, she is able to offer advice on each person’s situation. Laura also does weekly outreach at local pantries. The goal of her time spent at the pantries is to make sure that lower income individuals are receiving all the free benefits for which they are eligible. More often than not, these people have benefits and just need to be counseled on how to use them. Laura’s office is at Compass Benefits. She thoroughly enjoys the people she works with and the value of having so much expertise in-house to collectively serve their clients. Sam Nigro works with group benefits, and Laura is often brought in to help employees move from group coverage to Medicare. Tim Flott, a financial planner, is a valuable resource for Laura’s clients. Tim and Laura have done Medicare/ Social Security seminars that have been very well received. “We have found that people aged 60+ are hungry for this information, and we’re able to present it in an understandable way,” Laura says. “Our evening presentation went over two hours, not because we had that much information to present, but because people had so many questions.” Tim is also a resource for
12
September 2019
Laura’s clients when they have questions about what to do with their employer’s 401(k) and similar retirement issues. Clients have responded positively to receiving this type of individual Medicare counseling. As one client describes her meeting, “I was uneasy trying to wade through the mountains of Medicare mail I received before I turned 65. Laura not only got me through it, but I actually understood it when we were finished!” Laura’s advice is “clear, concise, and helpful in navigating Medicare,” reports another happy client. “Her suggestions were great! I am most pleased with the results. I was stressed, but she relieved my stress and led me to the best path.” A client who attended a library session reports, “After Laura’s Medicare seminar at the library, I told her about my husband’s high-cost Medicare supplement, and she offered to help. She found similar coverage and saved us over $3,000 a year!” Laura tells how gratifying it is to help clients through this transition. “When we first sit down, there’s usually some confusion and frustration,” she notes. “They know they need to transition onto Medicare, but they realize that they don’t know much about it. Our health doesn’t tend to get better as we get older, so making the right decisions is crucial! Sometimes, people are very decisive, with few questions; other times, several questions need to be addressed before people feel comfortable.” Every meeting is a bit different, but Laura allows her clients to take it at their own pace and make sure all questions are answered. She tells her clients that the best path for them is the one that works with their budget and lets them sleep well at night, confident that they have good coverage. If you’re approaching the transition to Medicare, you probably have some questions. If you could use some help understanding what Medicare is and—more importantly—what it isn’t, reach out to Laura at 402-6707789 to review all parts of Medicare and your options. Medicare does not have to be overwhelming! WE

A Woman’s Work
The Secret Lives of Grandmas Happy Grandparents’ Day
By Sharon Knierim
When someone says “grandma,” what image comes to your mind? Is it a picture of a sweet little old lady with her gray hair fashioned into a bun behind her head? Is she wearing an apron with a pocketful of hankies or tissues? In your imagination, I’ll bet she’s busy baking lots of your favorite cookies and then allowing you to consume as many as you want…just before you go home to Mom and Dad. For many of us who have lived for more than a few decades, this may well sound exactly like our grandmas. Today, there is a new creature out there. Granny may still be sweet and kind and be full of good advice (as well as being armed with cookies), but she probably doesn’t spend much of her day wearing an apron. As for tissues, she most likely expects you to get your own. Those cookies that used to fill our tummies have been replaced by fruits and yogurt or other healthier snacks. Have you noticed today’s grandmothers expect everyone to do their own dishes and clean up after themselves? Well, it’s about time. After all, Grandma or Granny or whatever you call her is neither a family employee nor a woman bound over to servitude. Grandma doesn’t sit at home in a rocker anymore, but she still rocks! The modern grandma probably works or volunteers at least part-time. Today, many people are working longer than in the past, and this includes senior women. Women

“of a certain age” have so much to bring to the world of work, whether they are in the corporate world, education, or another field. Their years of experience have brought them valuable skills and knowledge, making them ideal employees. Grandmas these days are also probably still into whatever sporting activities or exercise groups they enjoyed when they were younger. Pilates classes and cardio groups are full of grandmothers! We have to admit that grandmas have lives of their own. Although their adult children and grandchildren remain important elements in their lives, they have developed and maintained interests outside the family group. Have we been abandoned by Grandma? No, we have not. Instead, her life experiences enhance what she has to offer to her family and make her a more interesting and compelling person. Of course,

one of the wonderful blessings of an independent grandma is that she is so often willing to share her experiences with us. So, what do grandmas think about when they are out there in the world without us? Well, of course, they are thinking about us…all the time. That’s a given! However, they are also making plans and learning about the world around them. They participate in adventures or gatherings that stimulate their minds and keep them interested in new ideas that offer knowledge and skills from which women “of a certain age” used to be excluded. There is nothing better than spending time with someone who has a good supply of life experiences and is broad-minded. These people are fun! Let me tell you, most of the grandmas I know are extremely fun and inquisitive people, always ready for what is around the next corner. They’ve broken out of the old “grandma” mold, and they’re more interesting for having done it! What do grandmas do when they are not participating in family functions or events? Many of these women like to travel, and many of them travel worldwide. They make new friends and try new endeavors. It’s true that these gals have a few extra years and few extra miles on them, but that is certainly no reason for them to stay at home! If you want to acknowledge or honor your granny, any day of the year is appropriate and will be welcomed by her. Be sure you call ahead to make advance arrangements with this special lady—she might be out traveling the world. Of course, even if you can only catch her on the phone, she’s sure to appreciate the fact that you called to say hello and hear all about her latest adventures. Sunday, September 8, is Grandparents’ Day. It doesn’t get a lot of press, but why not use it as a good starting point to share some quality time with Grandma on a regular basis? Of course, while you’re at it, don’t forget Granddad. After all, he’s a pretty cool cat, himself. If you are blessed with grandparents, give them the most precious gifts of time and of yourself. To all the grandmas and grandpas out there, have a wonderful Grandparents’ Day! WE

Vantage Point
Dr. Arlene Garcia, LIMHP Helping Trauma Victims Move Forward By Vicki Jo Walsh
Dr. Arlene Garcia has been working here in Omaha for many years, helping trauma survivors who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, also known as PTSD. She has had a wide range of therapeutic experiences, including work at the Lincoln Regional Center and at the Veterans Administration, as well as years as a therapeutic counselor and a counselor appointed by courts for evaluations and interventions. She is especially experienced in treating veterans who have returned from combat. She was instrumental in establishing the PTSD clinic at the VA and also helps returning veterans obtain employment. PTSD, though often associated with combat veterans, is not just an issue of war. Any trauma (or series of traumas) can ignite the syndrome. PTSD survivors are just that—people who have found a way to survive after significant trauma. Even those living in the same household with someone who has PTSD may not know how PTSD affects their family member. The trauma survivor may now have sudden outbursts or exhibit other disruptive behaviors. These unexpected outbursts can be traumatic for family members, who may then also experience symptoms of PTSD. What does “trauma” mean in this context? Trauma can be defined as a normal response to an abnormal circumstance or series of such events. Anything that demeans a person or is so hurtful that it causes someone to struggle with daily life is a form of trauma. These trauma survivors might include not only returning combat veterans but also survivors of car crashes, house fires, school shootings, and lifethreatening physical illnesses or injuries, as well as those who have been physically or sexually abused, including people who have been raped or subjected to human trafficking. People who witness traumatic events or care for people who have been victimized may also suffer from PTSD. PTSD can occur after a single traumatic experience or many such experiences. Dr. Garcia likens it to a stack of pancakes—the traumatic events can pile up on top of each other until the last one topples the stack. Traumatized people struggle with a sense of powerlessness and try to regain control over their lives. These brilliant people find a way to survive the trauma, but they may need assistance with their coping skills after the fact. Symptoms of PTSD are many and varied, and some may be the result of survivor guilt. Behaviors can include flashbacks, anxiety attacks, or suicidal or homicidal thoughts. People with PTSD often have difficulty dealing with authority figures and trusting others. It’s easy to
18
September 2019
see how symptoms like these may lead to criminal issues and job retention challenges, as well as family and relationship problems. Dr. Garcia has 48 years of experience recognizing and treating these symptoms. Dr. Garcia uses cognitive therapeutic techniques to treat her patients. As she explains, the first step is to build trust with her patient. Dr. Garcia uses a gentle, soothing, and non-judgmental approach in establishing this relationship of trust. She notes that she admires her patients for their survival skills and wants to help them work through any roadblocks toward continued success. She then determines which therapeutic approaches would best serve each client’s needs. These might include individual therapy, group therapy, or both. Dr. Garcia is a member of the Lakota tribe, and she refers to her peaceful and therapeutic office at 90th and L Streets as the Lakota Lodge. In her practice, she utilizes several modes of healing and adheres to the seven values of Lakota Life when caring for her patients. These values include prayer (that is, finding spirituality by communicating personally with your higher power) and respect for self, higher power, family, community, and all of life. Caring and compassion means concern for one another, especially for the family, the old, the young, the orphaned, those in mourning, the sick, and those working for the people. Honesty and truth are vital—with yourself, with your higher power, and with others. Generosity and helping, without expecting anything in return, is another key Lakota value. The last two include humility (knowing that we are no better and no less than others) and wisdom, which comes from practice with knowledge. No matter what you’re coping with, Dr. Garcia can help you, and her specialty is helping those who are recovering from traumatic experiences. She welcomes everyone with dignity, grace, and skillful knowledge. To learn more about how Dr. Garcia can help you heal and move forward in your life, please give her a call at 402681-4348. Dr. Arlene Garcia is a licensed independent mental health practitioner. Her practice is at 8998 L Street, Suite 108, in Omaha. WE

Fresh Concept
Exterior Makeover Fresh Ideas for Your Home By Janette Calabro
Close your eyes and imagine the morning sun streaming through your home’s brand-new windows or the soft pitter-patter of rain across your protective new roof. Now, imagine the decrease in your utility bills brought on by your new energy-efficient windows. You can guess where we’re going—a home exterior makeover not only enhances design and curb appeal; it can also save you money! Home trends in 2019 prove that new siding, windows, and garage doors will amp up the aesthetic and appraisal value of your home. Add a new roof and gutters for additional charm and function. Exterior siding can spruce up a home instantly, but there are many options to review before deciding which siding is best for your house. One of the most popular siding styles is vinyl. This durable and low-maintenance plastic is generally less expensive than other types of siding. There’s plenty of versatility, too, with a choice of thickness and options for imitation wood or stone. Of course, every type of siding has pros and cons. Though vinyl has plenty to boast about, it can be damaged in high winds or extreme temperatures. If you decide vinyl siding is best for you, consider adding insulation for higher energy efficiency. Wood siding is classic, durable, and versatile. For example, you can paint it a different color on a whim. The higher maintenance factor for wood exterior is that, whim or not, you will likely have to repaint every five years, depending on the finish. If you’re not interested in painting, try engineered wood, which imitates cedar or redwood beautifully. This type of siding is basically wood with added material. It’s a very convincing wood look, and it repels critters like carpenter ants and termites. Don’t choose engineered wood unless you’re serious about not changing the color—the finish you choose is what you’ll keep until replacement. Metal siding was originally used for industrial buildings, but many residential homeowners love the fireproof and weather-resistant elements of this material. Metal keeps the indoor temps cooler in the summer, but you should expect a slight increase to your heating bill in the winter. Fiber-cement is another great option that mimics wood, brick, or stone siding. The material requires less maintenance than wood. This durable siding is also fireproof and water-resistant. Upscale brick, stone, and stucco siding ranges from a traditional appearance to an architectural flair. You can even mix different textures for the most exotic looks. To get the look on a budget, check for less expensive versions such as fabricated stone or veneer siding. No matter what material you choose, protect your investment with a workmanship warranty that covers installation. Choose a licensed contractor who installs siding to manufacturer specifications. A manufacturer warranty will cover your siding against material defects, even if you sell your home to another buyer. Vinyl siding
20

usually carries a lifetime warranty, but other materials likely carry a limited warranty. Check with the company doing the work and with the manufacturer of the siding product itself. Windows offer both a beautiful aesthetic and functional protection, so let in the light—or not—with new windows in 2019. While the trend this year leans toward floor-to-ceiling windows framed in dark hues, especially in newly constructed homes, replacing existing windows gravitates toward a sleek, modern look. Typical single or double-hung sliding windows require weather stripping to reduce air leaks. The trend this year is that while window size grows bigger, frame size shrinks. Painted metallic frames, unlike actual metal, have gained popularity, using darker colors like black. Even though darker hues are the new normal, soft white and beige frames remain classic. Vinyl casement windows are usually hinged, opening outward with a crank. This design increases their energy efficiency. Combine them for a custom look or accent your home with smaller, square windows for a contemporary look. The Department of Energy stresses that not all window glasses are the same. A key ingredient is the glazing, and glazing technology should be based on the climate you live in and the design of the windows. One common type of glazing fills the space between glass panes with gases such as argon or krypton; this is especially good for colder climates. Another form of glazing uses heat-absorbing tints to reduce heat and sun glare. Some blue or green tints actually allow more sunlight to filter inside. Some glazes use reflective coatings to cut solar heat by 40–70 percent. Add lowemissivity (low-e) glass, and the sunlight will bounce off the glass coating to reduce solar heat. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a goal for many, and the efficiency of low-e glass accomplishes that, along with other benefits such as a lower energy bill. Most homeowners choose glass for their windows, but windowpanes can also be made of durable acrylic or polycarbonate plastic. For some applications, these storm-resistant materials can be a good choice. Whatever windows you choose, don’t forget to protect them with the best warranties (on materials and installation). While you’re shopping for energy-efficient improvements, save energy and add style with a new
www.womensedition.com
roof. For warmer climates, reflective coatings are key to efficiency. Solar tiles absorb the sun’s heat to conserve energy and generate electricity. Metal roofs and lighter colored shingles also keep your living space cool by reflecting radiation. They are very durable; higher-end aluminum shingles may have a lifespan of up to 60 years. Some roofing materials are designed to withstand extreme wind, fire, hail, and other intense weather patterns. Most offer diverse colors and textures that add curb appeal and increase home values. Homeowners can choose among many roofing materials and architectural styles. Asphalt shingles, one of the most popular types of roofing, add dimension with diverse styles and shingle thickness. They’re more affordable than other roofing materials and are waterproof and fire-resistant, too. Asphalt shingles can last up to 20 years without much maintenance. Rubber shingles maintain their original shape, even during extreme heat and cold. Are rubber shingles the same material as car tires? Sort of. Some are literally made from recycled tires, but most are created from recycled plastic bags and sawdust. That makes them affordable, and you can bet they won’t dent in a hailstorm. Another classic roofing style is wood shingles. On the higher end in cost, wood shingles bring an elegant finish to your home’s exterior. Cedar repels insects naturally and can last up to 15 years. Droughted areas should be cautious of the potential fire hazard of wood roofing. Slate roofs, mined from metamorphic rock, aren’t something from “The Flintstones.” In fact, modern slate not only adds stunning beauty to your home, it can also last more than 100 years, depending on the slate’s density. Versatile and architecturally beautiful, clay tile roofing will stand up to heavy rains, insects, and freeze/thaw cycles. It is also known to
retain its color, not fading over time like other roofing materials. Check the manufacturer’s warranty for any roof before you buy. There should also be a labor guarantee provided by the roofing contractor. Like a new roof, new gutters bring both function and curb appeal. Gutters and downspouts defend your home from collecting rainwater, which can otherwise pool around your home’s foundation. Vinyl gutters are the least expensive, but you should ask your contractor if they will hold up to heavy clutter and if they’re resistant to heat and cold. Copper gutters are a bit more expensive, but they are virtually rust-free, look attractive, and stand up to heavy clogging. Aluminum and steel gutters are popular, and they’re usually rust-free. An exterior home makeover is not complete without an updated garage door. Bold colors are trending for your whole exterior, and black garage doors are no exception. Vinyl or fiberglass doors bring a modern look, and they’re affordable and easy to maintain. These newer materials aren’t all about appearance— they’re usually well-insulated to keep the garage warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Some garage doors are even solarpowered, and new technology connects door locks to your phone. That means you can grant temporary access to the dog walker or the babysitter. The trend of letting more light into your living space includes the garage—glass-paned garage doors, reinforced with a strong aluminum frame, will illuminate your car’s space. Imagine the possibilities for the exterior of your home…and then turn them into reality! They can bring improvements to your home value, curb appeal, and energy efficiency. Just imagine! Please, Don’t Tweeze Electrolysis for Permanent Hair Removal
By Marge Shoemaker
Are you embarrassed by excess body or facial hair? Perhaps your lip hairs are too dark and resemble a mustache. Maybe you’ve begun sprouting wiry hairs on your chin. Mary Brennan, the owner of Absolute Perfection Electrolysis, understands this feeling of embarrassment from personal experience. Mary has polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a condition that causes excess hair to grow on the face and body. She was a track athlete in school. “I was embarrassed by my sideburns,” she confides. She wore her hair down around her face until she was at the block. “Once on the track, I quickly pulled my hair back to keep it out of my way when I ran. Once I crossed the finish line, I loosened it and let it hang again.” She started her own electrolysis treatments at the end of her senior year in high school. After graduation, Mary went on to nursing school. While completing her nursing training, she added classes to become a certified professional electrologist. She now holds a

bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN). In addition, she is a certified professional electrologist (CPE) and a licensed electrologist (LE)—a certification required in Nebraska. The most common causes of unusual or excessive hairiness are hormonal or endocrine disorders, menopause, and problems with the menstrual period. Other possible causes include insulin resistance (a possible indication of prediabetes) and hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid gland). Some medications can cause

excessive hair growth. Extreme hair growth conditions such as hypertrichosis (sometimes called werewolf syndrome) and hirsutism (male-pattern hair growth on women) also exist. We’re all familiar with the various temporary hair removal techniques, including shaving, tweezing, waxing, and bleaching. Permanent modes or methods of hair removal include electrolysis, thermolysis, and a blend of the latter two. Electrolysis involves inserting a needle as thin as a strand of hair into a hair follicle to destroy the root with electrical current. With thermolysis, a heated needle is used. Mary offers a free consultation to new clients. “I can learn more from a personal conversation than from information given on a form,” she comments. She does ask each new client to complete a health history form to help determine what treatment might be best. “I like to know what treatments clients have used in the past and what medications they take before I determine treatment,” Mary explains. Through the consultation conversation, Mary can also determine how the client feels or is affected by the hair growth. How a client feels about excess hair is an important consideration. To some, it is just a nuisance; others have experienced psychological and emotional trauma. For Mary’s many transgender clients, in particular, she says, “a private conversation about personal feelings and sensitive subjects helps make them more comfortable. Those subjects aren’t easily covered by filling in a form.” She also feels her nursing background helps tremendously when working with sensitive subjects. Mary explains the importance of new clients leaving a message regarding what they want done when they call.

She never answers the phone while she’s with a client, but she returns calls as soon as she has time to talk. A phone consultation can also answer a lot of questions. As Mary puts it, “Why clients want something done is just as important as what they want done.” It helps to know if the client’s selfimage is positive or negative. Mary also considers skin type, the condition of the skin, and any previous problems. Clients also have questions about treatment, and Mary prefers to answer those at the beginning. The length of time for each treatment and the number of treatments needed vary for each client. Possible side effects, including temporary redness, tiny scabs, or slight swelling, are explained. Mary also emphasizes the need for maintenance. “With long-term clients, I watch for unusual hair growth (such as regrowth in an area already treated), which may indicate a problem that should be addressed by a medical professional.” She considers her clients’ health first and does not hesitate to refer them to other professionals, if needed. Mary advises those who have had a treatment to stay out of the sun for a while. Don’t sunbathe or go tanning on treatment day. (White dots may show up in treatment areas.) Do wear a hat or sunblock if you must go out. She advises all of us to ask questions about hair removal treatment: “If you don’t know, ask!” Explore the possibilities. Education will help you determine what works best for you and your lifestyle. To schedule a free consultation, call Mary at 402-398-3300. Remember to leave a message, including your phone number, so she can get back to you. Mary is available by appointment only, and appointments are generally scheduled for days and evenings, Monday through Saturday. WE

Prostate Cancer Early Detection Improves Cure Rates
By Leslie Summers
Second to skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men. It can often be treated successfully; more than 2 million men in the United States count themselves as prostate cancer survivors. Routine physical exams don’t always detect cancer, but should all men undergo specialized testing? From MRIs to prostate specific-antigen (PSA) tests to biopsies, many tests are available for detecting prostate cancer. Each one carries its own benefits and risks. According to the Mayo Clinic, “the average age at diagnosis of prostate cancer in the United States is 69 years; after that age, the chance of developing prostate cancer becomes more common than any other cancer in men or women.” Furthermore, African American men are at a higher risk for developing prostate cancer. Many medical experts promote the benefits of regular prostate cancer screening and believe that finding and treating prostate cancer early offers a better chance to cure the disease. The American Cancer Society says that men should make an informed decision: learn about prostate cancer and testing, consider the risks and possible benefits, talk to their doctor, and then decide. A man’s prostate, a small, walnut-shaped gland that produces seminal fluid, develops cancer when prostate cells grow out of control. There are different kinds of prostate cancer cells. Some prostate cancer cells grow slowly; these pose less harm and may or may not require treatment. Other prostate cancers spread rapidly and should be treated more aggressively. Rapidly growing cells can spread and affect nearby organs and can also spread to other parts of the body. In routine physical exams for men, doctors often perform a rectal exam to detect if the prostate is enlarged. If a man is experiencing possible symptoms of prostate cancer (at any age), such as pain or difficulty when passing urine or the presence of blood in his urine, he should talk to his doctor about testing right away. If a man is at risk for prostate cancer, a PSA test is often ordered to check the levels of this protein in his blood. However, PSA levels naturally rise with age, which leads to a high incidence of false-positive results. The American Cancer Society notes that “PSA levels can be high in prostate cancer, but they can also be high with prostate infections and other prostate problems. So, having a high PSA level does NOT always mean that you have prostate cancer.” If a man’s rectal exam or PSA levels indicate further testing, a biopsy may be ordered. A biopsy entails capturing cells from the man’s prostate and testing them to see if they are cancerous. At this point, a specialist such as a radiation oncologist, urologist, or medical oncologist should be consulted.

Technological advances now offer men a choice for diagnostics beyond biopsies. FirstScan is one of these screenings. Instead of an invasive probe, this technology uses an external “wearable” antenna to offer targeted MRI screening of the prostate. FirstScan notes that this less invasive test can provide better imaging accuracy (80–90 percent) with fewer complications. If the tests for prostate cancer come back positive, the cancer is then staged. The next step is to discuss treatment options, which may include any of the following: waiting with symptom monitoring, surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy. Sometimes, a combination of these treatments is ordered. Discuss all of the treatment options and understand the expected outcomes and possible side effects. The American Cancer Society encourages men to carefully consider the following when deciding whether or not to undergo treatment for prostate cancer: • Stage and grade of the cancer • Age and expected life span of the patient • Presence of other serious health conditions • Likelihood that treatment will cure the cancer • Feelings about the possible side effects from treatment Experimental treatments and medications can help with symptoms and help researchers take steps toward finding a cure. Joining a medical trial for an experimental treatment is another possibility to discuss with specialists. The good news is that treatment is often successful and can destroy the cancer. Many survivors return to a normal lifestyle but need to establish a post-treatment plan with the medical team. Regular follow-up exams, future tests and screening, diet and activity changes, and education about long-term effects from treatment should be a part of this plan. How do men cut their risk of developing prostate cancer? Prevention includes eating a healthy, low-fat diet; exercising regularly; attending regular check-ups; and quitting smoking. By age 50, a man should consider testing. However, a younger man’s individual risk factors, including family history, should encourage him to discuss early testing with his doctor. Flash Those Pearly Whites Cosmetic Dentistry Improves Smiles
By Loretta McCollum
Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you. If your teeth aren’t as straight or as white as you would like them to be, or if you have chipped or broken teeth that make you reluctant to smile, don’t give up—consider cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic dental procedures can improve the appearance of your mouth and teeth to give you the great smile you deserve. Studies have shown that improving the appearance of teeth can be a boost to confidence and self-esteem. Many general dentists offer teeth whitening procedures in their offices. Specialized professionals such as orthodontists, endodontists, prosthodontists, and oral surgeons are often trained in cosmetic dental procedures that add material to correct tooth imperfections. Common types of cosmetic dentistry include veneers, bonding, crowns, and implants. Teeth whitening is one of the most commonly used ways to improve your smile. In-office whitening solutions are stronger than kits purchased over the counter, and a dentist also uses precautions to protect your teeth and gums. Custom-made whitening trays are filled with a hydrogen peroxide bleaching solution. Protective rubber shields are typically placed over the gums during the procedure. It takes about three to four weeks to complete the process, including the time needed to create impressions for the custom trays.

Another option is laser teeth whitening. This procedure involves painting a bleaching product onto the teeth. A laser is shone onto the teeth to activate the chemicals, speeding up the reaction. Whitening effects can last up to three years. Frequent brushing and overall good oral hygiene help prolong results. Veneers are thin, custom-made porcelain or resin shells that cover the front surface of the teeth. They’re bonded to the teeth to change the color, shape, size, or length. They’re great for teeth that are discolored, chipped, or broken; have gaps; or are misaligned. The dentist does an initial consultation that includes color shade selection. At the next visit, the tooth surface is slightly roughened, allowing for better adhesion. If necessary, the tooth may also be reshaped. Cement is applied, and the veneers are placed on the teeth. Porcelain veneers are the most stain-resistant. Veneers may ›››

remain in place for up to 15 years. The bonding process is an alternative that is similar to veneers, and it is one of the most affordable forms of cosmetic dentistry. It’s also the method that removes the least amount of the tooth’s enamel. The entire process can be completed in one visit. Like veneers, a resin is applied to chipped, cracked, or stained teeth. A laser is used to harden the resin. Bonding is best for small cosmetic changes. As with veneers, bonding provides long-term results. Crowns cap teeth to restore shape, size, and appearance. A crown can protect a weak tooth from breaking or support a tooth with a large filling. It can also restore a broken tooth and hold a bridge in place. A root canal may be performed prior to capping the tooth, if there is extreme decay or the tooth pulp is damaged. The dentist first takes an impression of the tooth, then files the tooth down to make room for the crown. Alternatively, if there isn’t enough tooth left for the crown to adhere to, the dentist will build up the remaining tooth. While the permanent crown is being made, a temporary crown can be applied to protect the tooth. Crowns are usually made of porcelain or ceramic and are matched to the color of the patient’s natural teeth. Some patients have the same crown for up to 20 years. As with other cosmetic dentistry, it’s important to maintain good oral hygiene to keep your crowns in good repair. Implants are the strongest means to support replacement teeth. They can stand alone and do not rely on a healthy adjacent tooth for support. Small, screwlike titanium devices are placed in the jawbone and bond with the natural bone over a period of six to 12 weeks. They act as artificial roots, providing a sturdy base to support a replacement crown or bridge. Implants can be an alternative to dentures or can replace just one or two teeth. They are the most like natural teeth and are very durable. The process is lengthy, but the results are impressive. Cosmetic dentistry has evolved in recent years, and more and more people are getting the smiles that they’ve always wanted. Be sure to do your research and select a qualified professional. If your regular dentist doesn’t have a recommendation for you, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (aacd.com) can help you find a cosmetic dentist in your area. Growth Life Is Great “I hope you do not let anyone else’s expectations direct the course of your life.” —Julianne Donaldson, “Edenbrooke” “So, what do you want to be when you grow up?” Remember when our parents would ask that question? I remember always struggling to find an answer that would make them smile. Even back then, I had learned that it felt a whole lot better to say something that they would approve of. I don’t think any of them would have smiled if I had said I wanted to be a gypsy, or a rock star, or a bum! “A wonderful gift may not be wrapped as you expect.” —Jonathan Lockwood Huie The wonderful thing about retrospect, about hindsight, about maturity, or about plain old years on this planet is that it gives us the ability to grow. My mother, Anne Albracht, taught me this in her “later” years…when she was just a few years older than I am right now. Having life history, going through the ups and the downs of life, has a wonderful way of humbling us. It has a wonderful ability to force us to reflect. It has a wonderful ability to force us to grow. “To make mistakes is human; to stumble is commonplace; to be able to laugh at yourself is maturity.”—William Arthur Ward

When my fiancé met me, seven years ago, I told him I was happy just the way I was…thank you very much! I told him I didn’t care what others thought about me. I was very stubborn. I was very controlling. I was very demanding. I thought I knew it all. When a topic of conversation came up, I strongly stepped in and told everyone “my truth” of what REALLY had happened. I was a know-it-all. “Life and love are not about what you know, but about what you know you don’t know.” —Dan Pearce, Single Dad Laughing Today, I know that I truly do not know it all. I have to be me—a happy me! I do not have to control my family and friends. I am only responsible for my own happiness and for helping my husband to be happy and to grow. He is only responsible for his own happiness and for helping me to be happy and to grow. Everyone else? It’s up to them. “I’m not in this world to live up to your expectations, and you’re not in this world to live up to mine.” —Bruce Lee The “bonus” of all of this is that I am happier than I have ever been in my life. I have had friends and family tell me they have never seen me so happy. Growth is a very good thing, even when you are mature! Thanks, Mom! WE

Read! Write! Reconnect! It’s Good for the Soul Is September here already? This year is absolutely spinning by. It’s time for the change of seasons from summer to fall. Unless it’s warm year-round where you live, it’s time to put away tank tops and shorts and get out sweaters, jackets, and turtlenecks. Seasonal changes are a time for lifestyle changes. A big autumnal change for kids is going back to school. Buying school supplies, setting up routines, and forming new habits (no more staying up all night!) are primary preparations. Have the kids do some reading (vacation brochures?) and writing (summer memories?). These activities help reawaken the thinking processes needed for schoolwork. With diligence, reading and writing can become joyful lifelong habits. As the weather cools, schedules for school and other activities require some accommodating, but it’s important to maintain family time. We used to set aside a time (usually Sunday evening) to have a family dinner. It was a time to talk about what happened since the last gathering. The extended family— grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins—came when they could. We generally gathered in the afternoon and played cards or talked until dinner. The kids didn’t always join us as they became busy with their own lives, but they were always invited. Today, we still get together, just not as often. The television is turned off. The cell phones are put away. We tell a lot of stories. We reconnect. Cooler seasons are a good time to start indoor projects.
By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS
I’ve been going through old papers and photographs—items that were the basis of a family tree rooted in 1872 when my grandpa moved to South Dakota and started his family. There’s also a collection of letters, written “round robin” style by aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews, over a 50-year period. Unfortunately, the round robin stopped when email and texting took over for writing letters. (I sometimes get the round robin out for the family to read when we gather.) Put together, it creates an excellent picture of family history. Anyone who wants to write a memory to add to the family history is welcome to do so. I’m hoping to organize the collection and create a family story for my kids and cousins. I encourage family to write notes and letters. I clip articles for them to read and ask for their response. Over the years, I’ve accumulated dozens of books, and I take several with me when I travel. My grandsons ask me why I read books all the time—they wonder why I don’t just use technology. (Sometimes, I even leave books for them to read.) Read. Write. Reconnect. These are great activities for the cooler seasons, when it’s not always easy to get outdoors. It’s good for the mind and spirit, too. Enjoy the season. Enjoy the changes. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Aging in Place There’s No Place Like Home
By Robyn V. Powell
Baby boomers are now in their 50s, 60s, and 70s. If you’re one of them (or your parent is), you may already know that many seniors prefer what is called “aging in place,” which means they want to enjoy the comfort and independence of remaining in their homes as they age. Modifying your home to meet the changing needs that come with aging can mean the difference between remaining safely in your home or giving it up completely. Thanks to advances in technology and remodeling, homes across America are being modified so seniors can age in place. Balance and mobility issues are common challenges facing seniors, and falls are the most common cause of injury. Installing grip bars in high risk areas such as bathrooms and bedrooms is a simple and efficient way to provide support and stability, helping to prevent fall injuries. For some seniors with limited mobility, walking up and down stairs is no longer an option. Even those who can still navigate stairs are facing additional fall risks. Adding ramps to a home’s entry and exit areas provides wheelchair access as well as a safer transition in and out of the home. A stair lift is an excellent tool for maintaining independence in a home with stairs. The device consists of a chair that moves along a track, allowing anyone with mobility or balance issues to ride safely up and down. Working with a qualified stair lift installer will ensure you get the right product to meet your needs. Home flooring is another culprit in home falls. To avoid tripping,

carpet should be low pile and firmly installed. Guidelines from the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), found at ada-compliance. com, are an excellent resource for tips on the best types of flooring to install. Flooring that is ADA-compliant has undergone friction testing and meets anti-slip standards. The act of bathing can also be more difficult as we age. To avoid falling while entering and exiting the tub, consider a walk-in tub that has a shallow threshold and allows easy access through a small door on the side of the tub. Tub showers should be replaced with curb-less entry showers and should have doors instead of curtains. Both tubs and showers can be equipped with a handheld showerhead that allows for moving the water around versus having to move your body to reach the shower stream. A no-slip bench allows bathers to sit and take their time, and a heat light in the ceiling helps keep them warm. ›››

For people with arthritis or grip issues, replacing round door and cabinet handles with lever handles makes doors easier to open. Installing touchless faucets in bathrooms and kitchens and replacing twist faucets with levers and anti-scald faucets adds ease and safety. Remote monitoring and communication systems can benefit seniors who need some remote caregiving assistance. Wearable devices like watches, necklaces, and shoe insoles monitor vital signs and a person’s movements throughout the home. Nonwearable sensors, monitored by smartphone, can also be placed throughout the home. For example, a pressure-sensitive mat placed beside the bed can tell you when a loved one has gotten out of bed. In addition to caregiving functions, home automation and monitoring systems provide ease and convenience. Control lights, alarm systems, temperature, blinds, and more, all from your phone or remote control. Families are finding new ways to keep aging parents close. Incorporating an in-law suite into your existing home (or into a custom-built new home) allows for an easier transition. For those looking to remain close but not under the same roof, building a separate cottage on the property allows everyone space with the comfort of knowing family members are close by. Working with a designer or architect who is aging-in-place–certified will ensure that modifications are planned during the design phase, saving time and money. For example, ADA-compliant doorways should be 36 inches wide to allow for a walker, mobility scooter, or wheelchair to easily pass, while thresholds should be level or very gently beveled to allow for easy room-to-room transition. Aging-inplace specialists and occupational therapists understand the health and disability challenges people face over a lifetime. They can assess your existing home to pinpoint safety issues and make recommendations on modifications to best help you or your loved one maintain independence. When given the choice to live at home or move to an assisted living facility, 90 percent of seniors would prefer to remain in their homes. Studies confirm that aging in place is linked to greater happiness and better health. Modifying your home in advance brings the peace of mind of knowing you can maintain your independence into the future and spend your golden years in the comfort of your own home. Urology Demystified
Dr. Bruce Lundak Inspires Health By Janette Calabro
Urologists aren’t just for men—just ask Bruce Lundak, MD. This board-certified urologist will good-naturedly explain that women and children may also need help with issues like urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, or other urological disorders. “We can provide immediate relief from kidney stones or for someone unable to urinate,” Dr. Lundak explains. “For men and women, we treat urinary symptoms like overactive bladder, frequency of urination, urgency, incontinence, and urinary tract infections.” He’s passionate about helping all of his patients reach better health. Part of that process includes listening carefully to his patients to find out what their health goals truly are. Dr. Lundak has practiced medicine for 26 years, and his bedside manner is an appreciable part of his success. After graduating from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1993, he wanted more interaction with his patients. In 1999, his diverse experience pushed him toward the field of urology, which includes both medical and surgical treatments for men and women who have issues with their urinary systems. It also includes treatment of problems with the male reproductive system. Dr. Lundak is currently a member of the talented team at Adult Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology. Many of Dr. Lundak’s patients need treatment for urinary tract infections, which often bring symptoms of pain or burning during urination, difficulty urinating, or even blood in the urine. Dr. Lundak diagnoses, treats, and helps patients manage urinary tract infections and urinary incontinence, but that’s not all. He dives deep into issues of male infertility and sexual dysfunction, and he can diagnose and treat bladder, kidney, or prostate cancers. As a seasoned urologist, Dr. Lundak knows the secrets to keeping a man’s prostate healthy. Enlargement of the prostate gland, also called benign prostate hyperplasia or BPH, becomes more common as men grow older. Dr. Lundak asserts that treatment for BPH may be as simple as eating a healthy diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats. Treatment might also include physical therapy, medication like alpha blockers, or minimally invasive surgery. Though BPH doesn’t raise the risk of prostate cancer, its symptoms can be similar. That’s why Dr. Lundak is diligent about motivating men to get screened for prostate cancer. “Prostate cancer screening may be a simple blood test and a digital rectal exam,” says Dr. Lundak. He’s well aware of many patients’ discomfort with the rectal exam, and he acknowledges that a sense of humor about it can help both patient and doctor get through the tough stuff. The blood test measures the level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a protein that is produced by tissue in the gland. Dr. Lundak is serious about prostate cancer screen-

ings. “There has been some controversy on when men should be tested, but that’s now resolved,” he remarks. About five years ago, the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommended against PSA screening for men aged 55 to 69 years. The task force warned that such screenings may not save lives. Dr. Lundak notes with concern that screenings slowed down after that recommendation. The American Urological Association (AUA) responded to the task force by setting screening guidelines in 2018. The association stated that “the final recommendations released support screening in this age group (55–69) and are in direct alignment with the AUA’s clinical practice guidelines and with guidelines from most major physicians’ groups, including the American Cancer Society, the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.” “Not long after those guidelines came out, men started showing up again.” Dr. Lundak smiles in appreciation. “With screening, we diagnose at an earlier and more curable stage.” Dr. Lundak stresses that the earlier a man is screened, the sooner he can be treated, if cancer is found. Prostate cancer has four stages, and it’s best to diagnose it in the first or second stage. “Past stage two,” he notes, “we have great hormone therapy and medications to slow down the cancer.” He advises patients to check their family history—a man with a family history of prostate cancer should start screening earlier, in his 40s. “Healthy men aged 55–70 years should always consider screening,” he says, even if they have no family history of the disease. With a genial pragmatism and a warm smile that accompanies his great sense of humor, Dr. Lundak encourages questions from his patients. “I want my patients to know I’m listening,” he says, pronouncing each word clearly for effect. “I’m listening, and I care.” To book an appointment with Dr. Lundak for adult or pediatric urological conditions, you can schedule online at adultpediatricuro.com or call 402-397-7989. Adult Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology has two clinics: in Omaha, at 10707 Pacific Street, and at 3434 West Broadway, in Council Bluffs. WE

Fall Deep Cleaning Getting a Professional Clean
By Anne Yankus
Not too hot, not too cold—just like spring, fall is a great time of year to give your house a deep cleaning. Of course, it’s also a great time to get outside and enjoy the weather. Why not do both by hiring cleaners to do the work for you? Your home will really sparkle with professional attention from a maid service, window cleaners, carpet cleaners, and tile and grout cleaners. First up, maid services! A regular routine maid service visit typically covers thorough kitchen and bathroom cleaning, whole-house vacuuming, mopping, making beds, and dusting. Most services allow you to choose the frequency of their visits. Every other week is probably the most common choice, but you can request weekly or monthly visits, based on your needs and budget. If you need something more than what a regular cleaning visit offers, most maid services offer other types of specialized cleaning visits. Options might include deep cleaning visits, which cover everything a regular visit does plus a little extra cleaning, and movein/move-out cleanings, which can include the same tasks as a deep cleaning (minus the furniture) or additional things like cleaning the inside and outside of cabinets and refrigerators. After you’ve got a good idea of what kind of cleaning service you want, the next step is choosing a company to use. This can be a bit scary, since you’ll be giving people access to your home,

sometimes when you’re not there. There are a few ways you can make sure your home and family stay safe. The Better Business Bureau recommends that you interview multiple companies and check all their credentials. In particular, ask whether they are bonded (that protects you in case an employee damages your home) and insured (that protects you if an employee is injured while in your home). Request references, discuss cost, and get everything in writing. BBB also recommends preparing for the service’s visit by putting away jewelry or valuables and warning the service about any pets you have. Depending on your personal preference, you may also want to choose your cleaning service based on their team consistency policy. Some companies assign random cleaners, which means you’ll have different cleaners every time, but you’re likely to have the best trained individuals each time they’re there. Others will have a regular ›››

team, which ensures that you have the same cleaners visit your house every time. You may notice that windows is one thing missing from the list of things regularly cleaned by maid services. The main reason that general house cleaners don’t do windows is the same reason you shouldn’t do them yourself—safety. Would you be able to safely clean all the windows in your house, even on the outside of the second or third floor? Professional window cleaners have the appropriate equipment and training to get the job done safely. They also have the best products, the best techniques, and the experience to get the done job faster and, frankly, better than you would do it yourself. Experts generally recommend that you have your carpets professionally cleaned once a year. Steam cleaning and chemical cleaning are the most common methods for cleaning carpets. Steam cleaning, also known as hot water extraction, is the method recommended by most carpet manufacturers, but that’s something you’ll want to verify with your own carpet’s manufacturer. It’s also nice to know that no chemical residue is left on your carpet—this type of cleaning uses nothing but hot water. Chemical cleaning uses dry or liquid detergent to clean the carpet. As with any cleaning agent, some residue may be left behind, though that doesn’t mean it’s toxic in any way. Its main benefit over steam cleaning is that it takes much less time to dry…if any water was used at all! If you have delicate or valuable carpeting or rugs in your home, check with a rug cleaning and restoration business in your area to find out the best way to clean them. If you have tile floors, it’s easy enough to do spot cleaning and a general wipedown yourself, but you should have your tile and grout professionally cleaned once or twice a year. Professional tile and grout cleaners typically use high-pressure water and vacuum setups that will get your grout cleaner than you ever thought possible. Some services even offer sealants that will better protect your tile against small spills in the future. With all the cleaning services on the market today, there’s no reason you need to spend your entire fall cleaning your house! No matter what percentage of your deep cleaning you hire out, you’re sure to find it was 100 percent worth it. CBD Products 101 What Can They Do for You?
By Emilee Lindley
CBD products have been getting a lot of press lately. You’re sure to have heard of them, but you may not know much about them. What are these products? Do they have health benefits? Do they have psychoactive effects? Let’s review a little information about these substances to clear up the confusion. CBD is short for cannabidiol, which is indeed a derivative of the cannabis plant. However, the CBD products that you’re seeing at local retailers will not get you “high” because they have such low concentrations of THC (the psychoactive part of marijuana) if any. These CBD products are made from hemp, which is defined by the United States government as “cannabis and derivatives of cannabis with extremely low concentrations of the psychoactive compound THC (no more than 0.3 percent).” As of the 2018 Farm Bill, the federal government no longer considers hemp a controlled substance, and licensed farmers are growing this valuable crop for many purposes. (Please check your state regulations.) One of these purposes is to create food products derived from the seed of the hemp plant. Hemp seeds have been in use for decades in skin care products, protein powders, and more. Hemp seed oil is highly valued for its essential fatty acid profile and anti-inflammatory properties and can be found in health food stores and many conventional grocery stores. These products don’t contain THC or CBD, as those compounds are
not found in the seed of the plant. More recently, CBD products have made an entrance into retail, touting more health benefits than hemp seed oil. How does CBD improve health? The human body produces its own type of cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids. These are crucial to regulating important body functions like sleep, mood, pain control, and immune response. When the body’s natural endocannabinoid production isn’t sufficient, it can result in serious health conditions. That’s when phytocannabinoids, such as those found in the cannabis plant, can fill in the gap in humans. The idea is similar to hormone replacement therapy, in which an external source of hormones can stand in for hormones the body should be producing on its own. Research on the benefits of CBD is ongoing, but evidence suggests that it can help people manage anxiety, insomnia, and chronic pain. It has strong anti-inflammatory properties

and has been shown to lower the pain associated with arthritis. Like THC, it can improve the lives of cancer patients by reducing the nausea-related side effects of cancer treatment. However, it’s in the management of chronic pain that CBD will perhaps provide the most benefit, since other pharmacologic treatments for chronic pain often bring the dangerous risks of addiction. For patients with chronic pain that inhibits their day-to-day functioning, CBD products may be able to free them from both pain and the risks of taking narcotics. There are many CBD products available, including capsules, sprays, creams, and tinctures (liquid in a dropper to be added to food or ingested directly). Different products contain different concentrations of CBD, and it’s important to know what ingredients are in the supplement you’re choosing. A clinical herbalist is a great resource when you’re trying to decide which CBD product is right for you. Some of the retail locations selling CBD products may employ a clinical herbalist on site; if not, you can do an online search to find one in your area. The laws governing cannabis products are currently in flux. Some states have legalized recreational marijuana; some have legalized medicinal marijuana with a prescription. It’s important to learn what the laws are in your state, but be aware that the CBD products you’re seeing on retail shelves are not marijuana and are not made from marijuana. There is not yet an official certification process for CBD products. The labeling can be confusing, and you don’t want to pay more for the additional health benefits of CBD if a product actually contains only hemp oil. Retailers should offer third-party test results so you’ll know what you may or may not be getting inside your CBD products. It’s an exciting time in the area of cannabis research. Investigation into the health benefits of CBD (as well as those of THC) has exploded recently, and who knows how many of us may benefit? As researchers continue to learn more about the medicinal properties of plants in the cannabis family, they may be able to offer more natural treatments to help us live healthier lives. Find out what CBD can already do for you and your family by consulting a clinical herbalist or CBD retailer in your area. Yoga 101 Improve Physically and Mentally By Ellen M. Walker
Whether you currently have a workout routine or you are considering making a lifestyle change, you may be curious about yoga and its potential benefits. What’s involved in the practice of yoga? What are some of the types of yoga? What benefits might you gain from doing yoga? Yoga tones up the body, gives you more energy throughout the day, and may help with body awareness. It can also help relieve pain or stiffness from conditions like arthritis. According to Yoga Journal, 15 million Americans participate in various types of yoga. Many people practice yoga because it makes them feel more energetic, fit, and peaceful. Some other benefits reported are the toning of muscle groups, the removal of excess flab, and the massaging of internal organs. Organs such as the thyroid are rarely stimulated, and yoga is one activity that does just that. Yoga enthusiasts may also find relief from arthritis and back pain, as well as anxiety and depression. In yoga, the body’s weight is used for resistance and participants focus on the flow from one movement to another. There are many different yoga styles that focus on different areas of the body. Some focus on meditation and reflection, while others focus on coordinating breathing and movement. A typical yoga class involves a group of people working with a yoga instructor for up to two hours. Yoga movements extend the body and can be done from a standing or seated position. Many times, classes will conclude with a period of meditation or relaxation. The atmosphere should be noncompetitive. Well-trained teachers may use cushions to assist participants. Speak to your yoga instructor about how often you should attend classes to get the most benefit. There are many types of yoga, and a well-trained professional will be able to guide you to the best class for you. Hatha is a type of yoga that has become very popular in the United States and can be used to achieve self-realization. Hatha yoga is the foundation of all yoga styles. To practice Hatha yoga, approach every session in a meditative mood. With control and grace, the body performs poses. It is recommended to begin each series slowly. Power yoga is the American interpretation of Ashtanga yoga. Ashtanga yoga is a discipline that combines strength training and meditative breathing. Power yoga goes a step further with many poses that resemble basic calisthenics, such as pushups, handstands, and side bends. The key to power yoga is that sweat-producing, muscle-building power sets the pace. There isn’t a pause between poses as in traditional yoga. Instead, each move flows into the next more like an aerobic workout. Kundalini yoga refers to the energy of the Root Chakra, which surrounds the area around the lower spine. There will be lots of work on the core area of your body in this type of yoga. There will be rapid movement and more sitting than with other types of yoga.

Vinyasa yoga is normally a fast-paced type of yoga with many different poses. No two classes will be alike, making it perfect for those who like variety. Integral yoga is another style that is a traditional type of yoga that combines breathing exercises, meditation, chanting, and self-inquiry. Bikram yoga, which is also called hot yoga, is a series of 26 poses done in a room that is heated to 95–100 degrees. It promotes profuse sweating, making the body very warm and more flexible. Finally, Ishta yoga is a popular type of yoga that was developed by South African teacher Mani Finger. It focuses on opening energy channels throughout the body with postures and visualizations. In a recent study on two groups of healthy women funded by the American Council on Exercise, researchers found that women who practiced Hatha yoga three times per week showed significant improvement in muscular strength, balance, and flexibility. After eight weeks, the average flexibility of the yoga groups improved by between 13 and 35 percent. These gains were greater than those among the group of women who did not practice yoga. The nice thing about yoga is that there are no restrictions on who can practice it. Whether you are 12 or 75 years of age, you can try yoga and see how it works for you. Since yoga involves listening to your breathing and clearing your mind, a program of yoga stretching and breathing exercises can be simple to learn. Yoga has an invigorating effect on perceptions of both physical and mental energy, and it can improve mood and attitude. If you suffer from any medical problems, it is always suggested that you check with your physician before taking up a new form of exercise. Also, notify your yoga instructor of your health condition. Yoga studios can be found in most cities, and gyms often offer classes as a part of membership. Ask friends and family members for referrals or search online for local studios. Buyer Beware “Reasonably Priced” Mutual Funds
By George Morgan
Every day, Americans buy millions of goods and services. Many of us take the time and make the effort to compare the prices and features of what we buy in order to find the products that best serve our needs and our pocketbooks. In a similar fashion, participants in 401(k) plans buy mutual funds every day in order to grow their retirement dollars. However, a recent Supreme Court decision found that 401(k) account holders are handicapped in making personal buying decisions because the only options they can choose from are the ones provided by the plan sponsor. The Court ruled that plan sponsors need to be more judicious in their fund selection process. The Court specifically said that plan sponsors have a legal obligation to provide the plan participants with mutual funds that are “reasonably priced.” The Court did not specify, however, what constitutes a reasonably priced fund; that is left up to the lower courts to decide. The final definition of what constitutes a reasonable fee could take as long as a decade to determine, as individual court cases are settled and the mutual funds industry responds to the Court ruling. The reason the Court focused on reasonable fees is that investment expenses dramatically impact the amount of money that a plan participant may have upon retirement. The Court recognizes that large fees do not necessarily translate into large returns. If you have two funds with similar investment styles, but one has higher fees than the other, the investor in the high-fee fund may pay tens of thousands of dollars more in fees over the long term. At the end of a career, that investor may have less to show for it than if she had purchased similar funds with lower fees. In financial terminology, 1 percent is referred to as 100 basis points. A mutual fund that charges 1.5 percent is charging 150 basis points. In today’s environment, a fund charging in excess of 100 basis points is considered to be unreasonable and needs to be replaced with a less expensive fund. Over time, using low-cost, passive index funds, the mutual fund industry and the courts will drive that number closer to 5 or 10 basis points. In addition to the exact definition of a reasonable fee, the issue of implementation of the Supreme Court’s ruling is a work in progress. There are three parties involved in getting the nation’s 513,000 401(k) plans in line with the Court’s mandate: the plan sponsors, the federal government, and the plan participants. The primary responsibility for ensuring the availability of reasonably priced funds rests with the plan sponsors. As of this date, however, there are no specific guidelines as to when the changes must be completed; thus, many employers will lack a sense of urgency.
50
September 2019
The governmental agency responsible for 401(k) oversight is the Department of Labor. Periodically, agents from the DOL visit and audit plan sponsors, looking for rule violations. When the DOL locates violations, they have the authority to fine the offender and mandate compliance on the spot. Based upon the existing number of 401(k) plans and the number of DOL agents, strict reliance on this method of enforcement could take decades. The third party responsible for seeing that all 401(k) plans comply with the Court’s ruling is the plan participants themselves. Nobody cares as much about their money as they do. Currently, there are approximately 90 million plan participants in the United States, and that is a number that carries significant clout. The court did not explicitly say this, but the implication is that plan participants need to be vigilant to ensure that the funds they have available are in their best interests and not in the best interests of the fund supplier. Plan participant involvement in this process is not as daunting as it may seem. The first step is to identify the fees of the funds they currently are using and figure out where those fees stand on the scale of high to low. (Most plans provide account information, including fees, online.) Participants can then compare their findings to the guidelines presented above and ask fellow participants to do the same. If they find problems, they can form a group with their fellow employees to approach the employer with their concerns. Hopefully, they will find a sympathetic ear. One final concern expressed by the Court: the fund offerings of all 401(k) plans require periodic review. Just because an investment menu was acceptable a year ago, that does not guarantee that it is acceptable today. All three parties involved should plan to review investments on a regular basis to make sure they continue to meet changing legal requirements. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants how to improve their investment strategy.
The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. To determine which investments may be appropriate for you, consult your financial advisor prior to investing. WE

The Green Thumb
An Unfriendly Growing Season Don’t Give Up! By Sharon Knierim
As the growing season begins to draw to a close, many of us look back over the past few months and remember that this was a year plagued with nearly every problem a gardener could dream of. For some gardeners, the season seemed more like a nightmare. If you are a novice gardener, don’t let this past spring and summer be discouraging—please don’t throw in the towel! Conditions this season have been poor and not convivial to new gardeners. When you consider the conditions under which we were all trying to grow flowers or vegetables and fruits, the season was certainly not welcoming to newcomers to the wonderful world of gardening. Remember, gardening is often about patience and problemsolving. If you were not born with the “patience gene” and have not yet developed the characteristic of patience, you may be selling yourself short. Sure, there are lots of disappointments and setbacks in the number-one pastime in America, but this is just part of being a gardener. The most seasoned and timetested gardeners share the same weather-related frustrations as the newbies—the difference is that experienced gardeners know that not every year will be like this. They’ve learned to roll with the punches. Like everything else in life, we can learn from our
experiences; in gardening, experience is very important, so don’t throw away that rake and hoe. You’ll need them next spring. Here in the Midwest, we began the 2019 growing season with cold weather that did not want to go away. Winter seemed reluctant to leave us behind. When temperatures did eventually warm, we were the victims of too much rain. The combination of cold weather and too much precipitation ruined our planting schedule, which seemed to throw everyone into chaos. The months of May and June are always extremely busy for gardeners because that is when we do most of our planting and transplanting. This year, we all had to work double time! Eventually, every seed was sown, every seedling was set into the ground, and the transplanting of existing garden beauties was accomplished…and then we were promptly visited—again!—by too much rain. Some gardeners fell behind

in planting or weren’t able to plant at all because of flooding that actually began in March. To date, there are still flooded areas that have not and will not become gardens—at least, not this year. July 2019 brought its usual feature of extreme midwestern heat and humidity. Like many people, I feel like the heat is one thing, but when high levels of humidity are added to the mix, being outdoors can seem almost unbearable. As with any gardening problem, there are solutions to this challenge. Try to perform gardening tasks as early in the morning as possible or shortly before dusk. If the bugs want to bite you after supper, apply a product containing Deet. Wear a lightweight shirt with long sleeves and long pants, if you can stand it. You’ll be glad you did—insect bites are not just unpleasant; they can also bring disease. Above all, for the sake of safety, do not allow yourself to become too hot or to become dehydrated. This can be very dangerous! Always carry a bottle of water with you in the garden so that you can prevent dehydration. (Remember, if you feel thirsty, you may already be dehydrated.) Make a contract with yourself during extremely hot weather to work for only one or two hours before taking a break in the shade or indoors. If you experience shakiness, blurred vision, nausea, or chills, seek help immediately. These symptoms of heatstroke or sunstroke are very serious, and you need to address them as soon as possible. Many gardeners today always carry their phones with them into the garden, which is a wonderful idea. With a phone, help is always just a call away. I hope everyone has had a successful and safe gardening season in 2019, though I’m sure most of us had some setbacks this year. We have been through many challenges, but challenges can make gardening more interesting and, certainly, more educational. When finding solutions to problems, you are actually learning many of the fine points of gardening! Think back over the months and identify your successes, no matter how small. You’ll need all those good ideas and helpful methods to help you have a safe and successful season in 2020! Editor’s Note: Sharon Knierim has been a Master Gardener through Iowa State University since 2003. Today, she lives on a small farm in western Iowa and looks forward to sharing her passion for gardening each month with her green thumbed reader friends. WE September 2019

Overcoming Depression You Can Do It—With the Right Help
By Leslie Byrne
Depression is more than just feeling the blues—it can be a serious mental illness. Feelings of sadness or hopelessness can overwhelm a person and make it difficult, or impossible, to maintain a daily routine. These feelings can last for weeks, months, or years and can damage careers, relationships, and lives. The good news? This serious condition is highly treatable. The precise cause of depression is not known, but experts often point to brain chemistry and genetics to explain depression. Its onset can be spurred on by things like drug or alcohol abuse, other diseases, hormonal changes, certain prescription medications, and stressful life events like failed relationships, job loss, or failure to achieve important goals. In some people, the onset of depression is slower and can’t really be pinpointed. Depression can happen to anyone, at any age. Major depressive disorder, more commonly called clinical depression, affects over 16 million Americans every year, most of them women. There are many other types of depression, including postpartum depression (typical onset is shortly after giving birth), seasonal affective disorder (depression, fatigue, and weight gain during the winter months but not at other times), and atypical depression (includes excessive eating and sleeping, strong mood swings, and fatigue). Since depression is not a one-size-fits-all disease, it is not always easy to identify. Watch for these common symptoms, sustained over a
56

period of at least two weeks: feelings of great sadness or hopelessness, irritability, outbursts of anger, difficulty sleeping, extreme lack of energy, or decreased desire to do favorite things. For some, depression causes anxiety, appetite changes, slowed speech or movement, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, fixating on past failures, self-mutilation, and, most seriously, recurrent thoughts of suicide or attempts at suicide. Symptoms of depression in children may also include clinginess, excessive worrying, complaints of pain, and being underweight. For teens, parents should watch for feelings of worthlessness or anger, poor performance or attendance at school, being extremely sensitive, selfharming, or using drugs or alcohol. More than 3 million young people in the United States between the ages of 12 and 17 years have experienced at least one major depressive episode in the past year. Almost 20 percent of teen girls and almost 7 percent of teen boys have experienced a major depressive episode. In the elderly, watch for memory loss or personality
www.womensedition.com
changes, fatigue, loss of appetite, wanting to stay home, and thoughts of suicide. Once someone has reached out for help with depression, the common treatment is a combination of medication and therapy. The type of medications prescribed are called antidepressants. It is important that doctor and patient work together to ensure the right medication is prescribed at the right dosage; in some cases, different drugs and doses will need to be tried before finding the right one. Medication must be taken regularly to result in successful treatment. Therapy can be one-on-one or in a group, and it can be done in a residential treatment center or hospital where the patient stays for several days or weeks. Some patients participate in family therapy or couples therapy. Outpatient therapy is also common and is generally required for medication management. If antidepressant medications and therapy are not working, patients can try a type of brain stimulation therapy called repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). This procedure uses magnetic pulses to change neuronal activity in the part of the brain that controls mood. This treatment is used in a series of sessions over 4 to 6 weeks. Successful treatment for depression often includes a holistic component. Patients may work with a trainer to add exercise to their daily routine. Eating a healthy diet and not skipping meals helps keep blood sugar from fluctuating and causing mood swings. Some evidence suggests that increasing elements like tryptophan in your diet may help with mood. A nutritionist can guide you toward healthy, serotonin-enhancing foods. Spending time in the sunlight can boost mood and increase vitamin D levels, especially important for people with seasonal affective disorder. Some supplements, like St. John’s wort, are often taken to boost mood. Check with your doctor first to make sure the supplements won’t adversely interact with any medication you’re taking. Depression can’t be entirely prevented, but it can often be successfully treated— if you reach out for help! If you notice symptoms of depression (in yourself or someone else), seek help right away from a physician or therapist. If you are considering suicide, please call the National Suicide Prevention Helpline at 800-273-TALK (800273-8255) or 911 immediately. Remember, depression is very treatable, and you are not alone. Winter Is Coming Are Your Tires Ready? By Brennan Hallock
It may feel like too early to be thinking about winter, but the reality is that cold weather is on its way. It’s easier to prepare for it now, while it’s still warm, than after the temperatures drop and you dread stepping outside into the bitter cold. Good tires are essential for safe driving, especially in winter, when the road conditions often become snowy and icy. The difference between good tires and bad tires on a patch of ice could mean the difference between not even noticing the ice and having a serious accident. Different types of tires are designed for different driving conditions, including all-season, winter, all-terrain, off-road, racing, summer, touring, and performance. All-season and winter tires are the best choices for most average drivers. All-season radial tires are what most cars come equipped with today. They are versatile, but, like most jack-of-alltrades products, they are not the best tire for any one season. If you experience a lot of snowy and icy driving, winter tires will be your best option. These tires perform best when the temperatures are low and there is ice or snow on the road. You should switch them out again when the summer months come, as they wear quickly when the temperatures are higher. Good tires have more benefits than just improved control in inclement conditions. They can also improve fuel efficiency and ensure a quieter, smoother ride. If your tires are worn and
have an uneven tread pattern, your car has to work harder to put its power to the ground, causing the gas mileage to suffer. This is why new tires that are balanced, aligned, and properly inflated give you the best gas mileage. In addition, new tires are less bumpy and handle better. It’s important that all four tires match. If you replaced one tire recently because of a flat, the new tire may have a different level of wear from the rest. You’ll get the best gas mileage and driving experience if all four tires have the same level of wear. If you have to replace a tire when the rest of your tires are fairly new, one option is to have your mechanic shave the new tire tread to match the other tires. It may sound counterintuitive to have the tire tread shaved down, but it will actually make the tire wear at the same rate as the others and improve your car’s overall performance.

Tires typically last 3–4 years or about 36,000–60,000 miles. Like most parts on your vehicle, proper care will extend their life. This includes balancing, rotating, and aligning your tires regularly. Front and rear wheels wear at a different rate, especially in two-wheel drive cars. It’s important to rotate them about every six months or 7,500 miles so they wear at about the same rate. Once a year, while you’re having the tires rotated, have your mechanic balance and align your tires, as well. Proper inflation is also extremely important. How your tires wear is affected by the tire pressure. Check your tire pressure with a tire gauge at least once a month (if you don’t know how, your mechanic can show you). Make sure all the tires are inflated to the recommended tire pressure. This information can be found on the tire, inside the driver’s door, or in the user manual. There are two different types of air that can be put in your tires, and the type of air can impact the tire’s longevity. There is, of course, the standard air that comes from any gas station
air pump. The other type is actually pure nitrogen (normal air is 78 percent nitrogen). Pure nitrogen is not a must-have, but it does have benefits. First, nitrogen is less likely to seep through the rubber of the tires, keeping your tires at the recommended pressure longer. Your tires will also exhibit less pressure change with temperature swings, which can come in handy during winter. In addition, normal air has a certain percentage of water in it, which corrodes steel or aluminum rims. Pure nitrogen has no water. If you get a flat, patching your tire is sometimes the cheaper, better alternative. How do you know when it’s time to replace the tire instead? If you didn’t notice it was flat and drove on it for a while, you should replace instead of patch. The same is true if the damage is near a spot that has already been patched. If the hole is larger than 1/4 of a inch or is in the sidewall instead of the tread, you probably need a new tire. When in doubt, your mechanic will know if it’s best to patch or replace. The Good Life
Alcohol and Drug Treatment Finding the Path to Recovery
By Angella A. Arndt
Have you or someone you know been affected by alcohol or drug abuse? If so, you’re not alone. It’s estimated that one in seven people will develop a substance abuse disorder at some time in their life. However, only one in 10 of them will receive treatment. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), “in 2017, approximately 19.7 million people aged 12 and older had a substance usage disorder (SUD) related to their use of alcohol or illicit drugs in the past year, including 14.5 million people who had an alcohol use disorder and 7.5 million people who had an illicit drug use disorder.” Studies have proven that there are many contributors to alcohol abuse, and research shows that genes account for about half of the risk. Other factors, such as environmental influences, social habits, and psychological elements, account for the remainder of the risk. Longterm alcohol abuse may change the function in some areas of the brain—this may lead to an alcohol craving to achieve good feelings or to eliminate negative emotions. Many people believe that individuals who become addicted to drugs lack willpower or morals and could just choose to stop, but this is not the case. Factors such as a family history of addiction, mental health disorders, peer pressure, family situations, early use of drugs, and taking highly addictive drugs (including prescription drugs) can all increase the probability of developing an addiction. While the decision to take drugs is often voluntary, repeated drug use can cause brain changes that make it difficult for individuals to exercise self-control or resist their urges for drugs. Symptoms of alcohol or drug use disorder include: drinking or using drugs more or longer than intended (daily or throughout the day), experiencing intense cravings for alcohol or drugs, inability to stop drinking or using drugs, consuming increasing amounts of alcohol or drugs to achieve the desired effect, continued drinking or drug use in spite of harmful impacts, reducing social activities or missing obligations, or experiencing withdrawal symptoms or paranoia when alcohol or drugs wear off. Some external signs may indicate that a person is abusing drugs or alcohol. These include difficulties at school or work such as absenteeism, lack of interest, or poor performance; health issues like weight gain or loss, eye redness, or loss of motivation or energy; poor grooming habits; behavioral changes; and financial problems. The good news is that so much help is available for people struggling to overcome addiction. There are many treatment options to help individuals recover and return to a healthier lifestyle. A physician is a good resource—doctors can assist or refer patients for assessment and treatment plans. Common treatments include detoxification, behavioral therapy, inpatient or outpatient treatment, and medication. It’s important
60
September 2019
to note that effective treatment is a long-term process involving multiple therapies and consistent monitoring. No single treatment approach works for everyone; treatment programs are specifically tailored to meet an individual’s needs. There are several types of treatment facilities, including long-term and short-term residential facilities as well as outpatient programs. Long-term residential treatment facilities provide structured, round-the-clock care. Shortterm residential treatment facilities offer more intensive therapy to transition to community-based settings. Working individuals or those with strong support systems may opt for outpatient treatment programs. This type of treatment requires regular meetings with a counselor on a set schedule. Behavioral therapies include individual and group counseling. This is an important part of an effective treatment plan. Areas of focus include improving motivation, learning skills to resist alcohol or drugs, developing problem-solving skills, participating in constructive activities, and maintaining positive interpersonal relationships. Family therapy helps individuals and their families better understand one another, improve communication, and learn how to effectively work together. Family and friends play an essential role in motivating individuals with addiction to seek and remain in treatment. The involvement and support of family or significant others reinforces treatment strategies and helps maintain the benefits of treatment. Many self-help or support groups exist to help individuals and their families during the recovery process. Participants in these groups support and encourage each other to overcome addiction and remain alcohol or drugfree. Alcoholics Anonymous is probably the most widely known self-help group, but there are others, such as Al-Anon Family Groups, Narcotics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, Marijuana Anonymous, and SMART Recovery. While there is no cure for alcohol or drug addiction, both conditions can be treated and successfully managed. Seeking professional help, developing a treatment plan, and maintaining a follow-up protocol will pave the way to recovery. Colorado Train Trips Leaf-Peeping Routes By Jackie Williams
If you haven’t decided on a fall foliage trip for this year, you still have time to go! If you are already booked, then here’s an idea for next year: a train ride through Colorado. Colorful Colorado offers some great fall foliage options by train. You’ll see terrain that’s still wild, you’ll travel to places you can’t drive to, and you’ll see all the stunning fall colors. There are several old railroad lines still open today that travel from the Front Range to the Western Slope. One of the most famous is the Georgetown Loop Railroad, one of the state’s first visitor attractions. Completed in 1884, this historic three-foot, narrow gauge railroad takes passengers for a 75-minute ride alongside Clear Creek, over Devil’s Gate High Bridge, and through a Rocky Mountain pathway. You can also book a silver mining tour in conjunction with the ride. There are specific “Fall Colors” excursions, some of which include guided hikes where you can follow the trails and wagon roads used by miners in the 1800s and take photos of the train passing by up close. The colorful aspens are simply gorgeous. A ride on the Leadville, Colorado and Southern Railroad takes you to see the Continental Divide, the Arkansas River Valley, and beautiful views of two of the tallest peaks in Colorado. Ride through the San Isabel National Forest on this 2 and 1/2 hour

adventure, where you can meet the engineer and tour the caboose and engine. You can even bring your own picnic lunch and well-behaved dog along with you. The wildflowers are delightfully colorful in the summer, but the autumn foliage is truly breathtaking. The best-known western railway lines on the Western Slope were founded by Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in 1880. Experience traveling on a historic coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive as you wind through the canyons and wilderness of the San Juan National Forest. You can choose a round-trip train ride or, if you want to take a different route on the way back, a combination of train and bus ride. Take advantage of the Durango Brew Train or Wines and Rails for some local tastings during the best leaf-peeping times in Colorado. ›››

The next option is the Royal Gorge Route Railroad. Formerly the transcontinental link between Denver and Salt Lake in the 1880s, four trains would pass through the Royal Gorge each day. Reestablished in 1998, it has become a premier visitor’s attraction in Colorado, carrying over 100,000 guests each year. Picture yourself winding along the Arkansas River and being amazed by the granite cliffs of the Gorge. The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad takes you between New Mexico and Colorado and on the highest mountain pass reached by rail in the United States. Imagine the sheer rock faces, wildlife, and dramatic scenic landscapes as you pass by. The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad takes you through the stunning La Veta Pass and offers the Fall Colors Explorer train, with staged photo locations in the Rockies and a route that takes you through canyons, meadows, and foothills. If you are looking for a longer and speedier train trip, there is Amtrak’s famous California Zephyr. This train runs coast to coast daily and has six stops in Colorado. It is said to be one of the most beautiful train rides you can take in the United States. As you now know, there are plenty of options to choose from for a fantastic fall foliage train ride through Colorado. Make sure to get the timing right, as peak colors vary each year. September tends to be best in the central and northern area, with October being the prime time for the southern part of the state. Your travel agent can help you nail down the best time to visit. Colorado’s railroads are historic, not only for their part in gold and silver mining but for some of the country’s most amazing views. Your travel agent can easily book you a package with flights and accommodations along the way so you can ride more than one train (since most are short day trips). Choose from a rustic riverside cabin or a charming bed and breakfast in the mountain towns; stay at a modern boutique hotel in the larger cities. The railroads and local outfitters offer side excursions for outdoor lovers who would enjoy hiking, biking, mining, fishing, camping, and photography in addition to the train ride. Sit back and relax as you enjoy views that only those who hiked to 14,000 feet high would get…but without the hard work. Your next leaf-peeping trip awaits you—all aboard! Enterprising Ideas
Beau Joyau Boutique Fabulous Finds in an Intimate Setting By Angella A. Arndt
A warm greeting, exclusive finds, and personalized service are all part of the experience at Beau Joyau, a boutique that specializes in lifestyle accessories for both you and your home. Why combine home accessories with things to wear? Owner Pam Huerta sees it this way: “It makes sense because it’s all beautiful. Women want to look beautiful and to be surrounded by beauty.” Chic clothing, stylish accessories, and artisan handcrafted stoneware are just some of the unique items you’ll find at Beau Joyau. Pam’s journey began when her sister sent her a piece of the stoneware. Pam fell in love with the stoneware’s beauty and durability, so she was disappointed to learn that it wasn’t available locally. She introduced it to Omaha when she opened a home-based business called Select Polish Pottery in 2002. She offered handcrafted Polish stoneware imported from Boleslawiec, Poland. A few years later, she added women’s accessories, and her son came up with the name Beau Joyau, which means “beautiful jewel.” Her business eventually outgrew her home. Five years ago, Pam moved into her current showroom. Her line of products has expanded to include Polish pottery, apparel, accessories, handbags, jewelry, skin care products, perfume, and shoes. The Boleslawiec stoneware originated in the German province of Silesia, which is now part of Poland. Artisans handcraft each piece. The original design featured peacock feathers in cobalt blue, peacock blue, and earth tones. Historically, male peacocks have been a symbol of prosperity in Europe, and this design was created for the King of Prussia. Beau Joyau carries the most extensive inventory of Polish pottery in Omaha, offering limitededition, traditional, and modern patterns. “There are so many different looks,” Pam notes. Polish pottery is leadfree and cadmium-free, and it is safe to use in the oven, microwave, freezer, and dishwasher. Beau Joyau carries several lines of distinctive jewelry, including designer, trend, and travel collections. Pam says that she “tries to carry lines that no one else carries,” and Beau Joyau is indeed one of only a few boutiques in the country to carry Lafonn jewelry. This line is made with sterling silver that is bonded with platinum, yellow, or rose gold and set with simulated diamonds and labgrown or genuine gemstones. The designer collection at Beau Joyau, including Lafonn, showcases timelessness, quality, and beauty at an affordable price. The trend collection features current styles at lower prices. The travel collection is excellent for women who want to look great while traveling but would prefer to leave their most expensive pieces of jewelry at home. Travel jewelry provides a chic alternative to bringing expensive jewelry on a trip. Beau Joyau also carries several distinctive lines of
66
September 2019
clothing, focusing on designers that are not widely available in Omaha. These lines include Elana Kattan and Clara Sunwoo. The Elana Kattan line is a unique line of fashion to fit and flatter a wide range of feminine shapes. Clara Sunwoo is a mother-daughter line of clothing that features their signature soft-knit stretch. It’s wrinkle-free and washable, making it great for travel. Annette Everhart-Brown, a Beau Joyau customer since it opened five years ago, shares her thoughts. “The prices are really good, but the style is exceptional. Everyone can find something here. Pam knows how to put outfits together for specific body types.” Pam’s enthusiasm shows when she talks about her clients. “I love styling people and making them feel great.” Beau Joyau also hosts events to promote women and women-owned businesses. Recent events have featured speakers on topics including “Reducing Stress and Expectations Over the Holidays,” “How to Reach Your Goals,” and “Love Your Gut!” Check out Beau Joyau online at beaujoyau.com or on Facebook to learn about upcoming events. This fall, Pam has plans to add a “bracelet bar,” which will feature chic, stackable bracelets at affordable prices. She will also have a “beauty counter,” which will feature samples of skin care and cosmetic products from the Beautycounter line. This company uses only natural, organic, sustainable, and synthetic ingredients and avoids over 1,500 harmful or questionable ingredients. Customers will be able to try samples before they buy. Pam is excited about the future, and her philosophy is simple. “I put my heart into the whole business. We take care of our clients and work one-on-one with them to make sure they’re happy. We provide the kind of excellent customer service that you can only do at a boutique. We’re not a chain or big box store. We’re part of the community.” Beau Joyau is located at 2947 South 108th Street, in Omaha. The boutique is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Thursday, from 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; and Saturday, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Call 402-301-7103 or find them online at beaujoyau.com or on Facebook. Losing Sleep? Sleep Apnea May Be Obstructing It
By Linda Barnes
It can be hard to tell if you have sleep apnea yourself—after all, symptoms take place while you’re asleep. If you wake up tired, are told that you snore loudly, or have difficulty concentrating during the day, it might be due to frequent pauses in breathing every night. If your breathing stops for 10 seconds or more at a time, multiple times, during sleep, that is sleep apnea. This condition is estimated to affect 18 million American adults—and that doesn’t include the people trying to sleep next to them! Symptoms of sleep apnea include loud snoring, gasping for air during sleep, awaking with dry mouth, morning headaches, excessive daytime sleepiness, foggy thinking, and irritability. You may consider such symptoms only a nuisance, but sleep apnea creates serious health risks. These can include things like heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, and stroke. Fortunately, diagnostic tests and effective treatments have advanced dramatically. Sleep specialists have the expertise to test for, analyze, and find the best solutions. The less common form of sleep apnea is called central sleep apnea. It originates in the brain, which stops sending the proper signals to control breathing. The most common variety of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea, which typically involves the throat muscles relaxing as you snooze, partially closing or blocking your airway. The lack of oxygen causes your body to kick up your breathing, which can result in snoring or gasping for air.You may wake up for a few seconds (though
68
September 2019
you probably won’t remember), interrupting or preventing a normal sleep cycle. Physicians might recommend a sleep study evaluation when they suspect sleep apnea. This involves overnight monitoring of breathing and other functions. Studies are usually done at a sleep clinic or sleep center. In certain circumstances, studies may be done at home, with portable equipment. What can you expect if you’re referred for a sleep study? At a sleep center, you’ll have a hotel-like room. In bed, you’ll be hooked up to sensors that will monitor and record brain waves, heart rate, oxygen levels, respiratory rates, and muscle movements during the night. The testing is not invasive and is virtually painless. The results show whether your breathing stops during sleep and, if so, how often. If you are diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, you may need to see an otolaryngologist (an ear, nose, and throat specialist also known
www.womensedition.com
as an ENT) to rule out structural problems within the throat or nose. If central apnea is suspected, a neurologist will likely run tests of the brain and nervous system. For both obstructive and central apnea, the most common treatment involves the use of a mask that delivers continuous, pressurized air to hold the air passages open during sleep. These machines are called continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines. There are several designs of CPAP, and all can be adjusted to deliver the right amount of pressure for each individual. If your first night of sleep study revealed frequent interruptions in breathing, you’ll likely return for a second night, for which you’ll be fitted with a CPAP. During sleep, a technician will monitor breathing and adjust the air pressure to determine the best settings. A prescription will be written for a CPAP with a mask design suited to your needs, along with precise settings for the machine. In some cases of central sleep apnea, supplemental oxygen or prescription medication may be prescribed. For some people with mild to moderate obstructive apnea, an oral appliance may be the solution. Though many designs exist, most have the same goal of moving the jaw into a position that prevents airways from closing during sleep. These devices are worn at night in the mouth and feel much like orthodontic retainers or mouth guards. A customized device is created for each patient by a specially trained dentist. An oral appliance may not be suitable for a person with severe sleep apnea, but patients with milder cases may benefit. A CPAP machine is an excellent treatment for obstructive sleep apnea, but it can be cumbersome for travel. Patients who can get sufficient symptom relief from an oral appliance may appreciate the comfort, quietness, and portability for travel. In some cases, surgery may help. Excess tissue can be removed from the throat, including tonsils and adenoids. The result may be less snoring and easier breathing during sleep. Some of the risk factors for developing sleep apnea are possible to control. Using sedatives, alcohol, or tranquilizers can worsen obstructive apnea. Excess weight or smoking increases the risk significantly—losing weight and quitting smoking can improve symptoms (as well as your general health). Don’t ignore the symptoms of sleep apnea, in yourself or in a loved one. The risks are just too great! Diagnosis and proper treatment can dramatically change a life. Therapy and Support Animals Comforting, Unconditional Love By Brie Christensen
Animals lovers across the world adopt pets for various reasons, but perhaps one of the most central purposes is to gain some form of companionship. Because animals are often recognized for their ability to provide comfort and affection to their owners, as well as the people around them, it’s become quite common for handlers to take steps to certify their animals as either therapy or support pets. There are countless benefits to having a therapy or support animal, but owners should learn what they’re taking on before starting the necessary measures to register an animal as either a therapy or support animal. First of all, therapy and support animals should not be confused with service animals. Service dogs are trained to do specific tasks for a person with a disability (for example, navigating for people who are blind or alerting people to the presence of allergens). Service dogs are granted special access, by law, into public and private places to assist their people. Therapy animals, on the other hand, work in concert with their owners to improve the lives of others. Therapy animals accompany their handlers to volunteer in clinical settings such as schools, hospitals, and nursing homes to offer therapeutic contact to children, patients, or the elderly. This contact ultimately improves the physical, social, emotional, or cognitive functioning of the people who were in contact with the animal. In fact, it’s been shown that spending time with a therapy pet can lower blood pressure and heart rate, reduce anxiety, and increase endorphins and oxytocin. A therapy animal does not need to be trained to perform specific tasks, but you will need to enroll your animal in a therapy class and register the animal with a national therapy animal organization. It’s always a good idea to make sure the animal is socialized to people and well trained in terms of general behavior. Be mindful that, while service animals are granted access into places that other pets can’t go, therapy animals do not have those privileges; you would always arrange a therapy animal visit in advance with the location you’d like to visit. Emotional support animals provide support to owners who are experiencing symptoms of conditions like depression, anxiety, or certain phobias. To qualify as an emotional support animal, the animal must be prescribed for the specific owner, most often by a licensed mental health professional. Before you consider a support animal, you should assess whether or not you are equipped to provide for a pet. If the answer is undoubtedly yes, you can move forward with determining whether or not it is legal to have a support animal in your state. If it is allowed, then the owner will need to visit a psychiatrist or a mental health expert to be evaluated. It is absolutely essential to receive a doctor’s letter, which is a legal affirmation that the presence of a support animal will

improve your state of mind, as it is needed to move forward with the process. It’s important to note that emotional support animals do not have the same access to public areas that are afforded to service animals. Exceptions include living in housing in which pets are not otherwise allowed and being able to bring your pet on a flight with you. In either case, you’ll probably need to provide documentation that your pet’s presence is vital to your healthy state of mind. Next, select an appropriate breed of animal that possesses characteristics that are deemed suitable for your specific mental health diagnosis (your doctor can help you make that determination). It might also be wise to consider getting an animal from a company that specifically trains animals to be emotional support pets. On the other hand, if you wish to register a pet that is already part of your family, it’s best to register with an emotional support association. No formal training is needed to become a support animal, but some owners choose to enroll their furry friend in some pet training classes, anyway. Therapy animals and support animals have a lot to offer the people in their lives. However, before making the decision to obtain a therapy or support animal, experts recommend that owners first be well informed. Veterinarians, therapy pet trainers, and mental health providers can help answer questions, offer resources, and provide information to those who are considering this exciting undertaking. Once all of the appropriate actions are taken, there’s only one thing left to do—embark on a more enjoyable life alongside a furry companion who offers comfort and support like no other. Big Al Real Hugs
By Janet Van deWalle
“I need one of those long hugs where you kinda forget whatever else is happening around you for a minute.” —Marilyn Monroe My dad, who passed away 28 years ago this month, gave the BEST HUGS of any person I have ever known. Big Al was 6’2” and could envelop you in a hug that could take away the worst day of your life, a broken heart, a fight with your best friend…all in the blink of an eye. When I think about my dad, his hugs are what I miss the most. “When the right person hugs you, it’s like medicine. I’m so grateful for those few people in my life who are good for my soul.” —Steve Maraboli It’s a priceless gift to have someone in your life who you can trust, with every ounce of your being, to have your back. My dad was one of a handful of people who I was blessed to have that kind of trust with. I think that is the reason his hugs were the best. “Don’t fear the enemy that attacks you but the fake friend who hugs you.”—Anonymous The other night, I watched the movie “The Devil Wears Prada.” It’s a 2006 film that stars Meryl Streep as the publisher of a fashion

magazine. She was…not a very nice person. She gave hugs and kisses to everyone when she met them, even her worst enemies. As the movie progressed, we saw her be the “not nice person” that she was, but the hugs kept coming! Fake hugs are worse than no hugs at all. We all know what I mean by this. We all have a friend or family member who hugs everyone that they meet. We all know that the gesture is not sincere. I am at the stage of my life where I prefer no hug to a fake hug. “Being able to give someone a hug from the heart, it’s healing. It’s healing for yourself and healing for others, and we need a lot of that.”—Big Show Physical touch is one of those wonderful things that comes right back to us when we give it away. Big Al taught me the importance of hugging and shutting up.Yes, shutting up! When people are hurting, they are not looking for solutions. They are not looking for advice. They are simply looking for something to make themselves feel better. “Don’t forget you’re human. It’s okay to have a meltdown. Just don’t unpack and live there. Cry it out. Then focus on where you’re headed.” —Unknown Go find someone to give you a real hug.
