Publisher’s Notes
Decide Our Fate Happy fall! I’ve been listening to music a lot over the last several weeks. My husband, Manny, and I rarely turn on the television. If we do, it is to watch a movie—sometimes a romantic comedy, sometimes a documentary, sometimes sci-fi. Sometimes, we even watch war movies. (After all, Manny is a 20-year Navy vet!) Usually, we leave the television off. Instead, we turn on a wide variety of music and simply sit and talk. Both of us have always been huge Jason Mraz fans. As a matter of fact, the first concert we ever attended together was when Jason Mraz performed at Red Rocks in Colorado. Now, that was an unforgettable concert! The thing that has always drawn us to Jason Mraz as a performer is how he is so very positive. He recently came out with a new album, and it is called “Look for the Good.” This new album came out at the perfect time…not just for us, but for everyone who is looking for some relief from their day-to-day experiences. The first time I heard the eponymous track, I remember asking Google to “repeat last song” over and over. The line that caught my attention was: “People done gone crazy, people done gone mad. People done forgot the superpowers we all have.” Boy, did that ever hit the nail on the head! “We were born to love, not hate, we can decide our fate,” he continues, “and look for the good in everyone and celebrate all our mistakes.” Hearing those words brought tears to my eyes. I do know that there have been very few conversations lately about love and way too many about hate. The lyrics also remind us that we can all decide what we are going to put our attention to—every single day. “Look for the good in everything. Look for the people who will set your soul free. It always seems impossible until it’s done. Look for the good in everyone.” This is a great song to wake up to. This is a great song to live by in these…times. If we put our attention to looking for the good in everything, it will make our days and nights so much better. I believe many of us—including me!—have spent lots of time and energy over the last several months judging, ridiculing, and becoming angrier. This has made us a whole lot less happy. I’ve decided I’m going to follow Jason’s lead and look for the good in everything. I already feel better! See you next month.

Watergate Salad Blend an 8-ounce container of thawed Cool Whip (or real whipped cream) with 1 cup of miniature marshmallows, 1 can of crushed pineapple, 1/4 cup of crushed nuts, and 1 small package of instant pistachio pudding. Add a bit of fruit juice if it is too thick. Refrigerate for several hours before serving. Fresh Garden Salsa Peel (optional) and dice 3 or 4 fresh tomatoes. If desired, grill the tomatoes for a few minutes before combining in a bowl with 3 diced green onions and a dash each of olive oil, white vinegar, sugar, salt, and pepper. Check the flavors and adjust to your liking. For heat, add a bit of hot sauce or chili powder. Leave it chunky or blend it smooth in the food processor. Refrigerate or eat it right away! Slow Cooker Sausage, Spuds, and Cabbage Core, rinse, and chop 1 head of cabbage. Place it in a slow cooker and dot with 1 Tablespoon of butter. Seven-Layer Cauliflower Salad Wash, dry, and chop 1 head of iceberg lettuce (or a mix of romaine and iceberg). Place the lettuce in the bottom of a 9x13-inch dish. Top with 1 head of cauliflower, chopped into bite-size pieces. (If desired, add fresh peas and broccoli florets.) Spread 2 cups of Miracle Whip on top. Sprinkle on 1 medium diced sweet or red onion. Add 1 pound of crispy crumbled bacon. Add 1/3 cup of parmesan cheese. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup of sugar. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Mix together right before serving. Peach Galette Peel, pit, and slice 6 peaches. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup of sugar, 3 Tablespoons of flour, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Roll out one pie pastry onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment. Arrange the peaches into the center of the pastry. Fold up the pastry to the center over the peaches—the dough will not touch in the middle. Brush the pastry with an egg wash. Bake at 375 degrees for 45–55 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm with ice cream. Quick Chocolate Torte Toast, cool, and finely grind 2–3 cups of pecans or walnuts. Mix together 1 box of brownie mix, 6 Tablespoons of melted butter, 1/3 cup of milk, and 1 large egg. Mix in the nuts. Grease a 9-inch round cake pan and line with a circle of parchment. Pour the batter into the pan and bake at 325 degrees for 35–40 minutes. Cool the torte for 10 minutes, then flip it over and remove the parchment paper. Flip it back over onto a serving plate. Dust with powdered sugar. Serve with raspberries and whipped cream. WE

Look 10 Years Younger This Fall! Styling Tips for Everyone
By Holly Bell
Fall is coming, and it brings with it a new state of mind. We are glad to feel cool breezes once again, and it’s fun to break out our fall wardrobes and purchase clothing for a new season. This has been a year of challenges, and we may feel like we’ve aged years in just months. Why not treat yourself to looking 10 years younger this fall? A lot of us in the Midwest gravitate toward black and gray from fall to spring. Though this palette is tasteful and slimming, it can also sometimes be aging and too severe. Black against mature skin can accentuate hollows and shadows; breaking up the black with some neutrals can soften its harsh quality. Try a neutral-colored jacket over a black skirt or pants. Choose one of fall’s newest trends, the cropped jacket, to add a youthful vibe. To avoid looking too youthful, keep it in classic patterns such as houndstooth or pinstripe. Another way to brighten up your look is to add some hip color under your black jacket. Try fall’s hot color: marigold. It looks fabulous with black. We all have a black dress in the closet. How can we make that more youthful? Put those pearls back in the jewelry box and tie on a fall scarf! Modern scarves for fall tend to be oversized, made of a substantial rather than silky fabric, and fastened more like a wrap than a tie. Not a scarf person? Try topping off your black dress with a trendy designer belt. These belts are simple but can transform an entire outfit. Usually, they are black leather with a logo buckle. If you’re not into logos, just choose a substantial-looking, wider black belt with a smartly tailored buckle. Another way to punch up your black dress is with the right kind of jewelry. The gold trend still reigns this fall, but you will see more substantial jewelry than you did in the summer. Chains of all kinds look trendy and brighten up the neckline. The layering trend continues, and it is a lot of fun. Why wear one necklace when you can wear three or more? It’s fun to experiment with different lengths of necklaces for a new look that is decidedly hip! We will be seeing stars this fall as designers latch on to the craze. Star hoops, star studs, and star necklaces are going to be everywhere. The shoe choice with that black dress is all-important. Tempting as it may be to wear black shoes, nude or taupe shoes are more flattering with any dress, especially black, to give you the long-legged look. As we head toward winter, though, tall black fashion boots look great. Another area where people have a difficult time looking youthful is when choosing fabric patterns. If you observe the clothing choices of younger people, you will notice that they seldom wear big, bold patterns. Gravitating to smaller, more subtle pattern choices looks younger. Styling also makes a big difference. Many of us don’t have the toned arms we wish we had, so we wear long

sleeves. If you put on some long sleeves and look at yourself in the mirror, you’ll notice that they create a boxy look. Pushing up or rolling up those sleeves to just below the elbow creates a more casual and not-so-covered-up vibe. Three-quarter sleeves can also break up that box with some skin; you’ll look narrower and younger. To look 10 years younger, you likely need to update your jeans wardrobe! Try a high-waisted, dark wash jean that skims your body. For the top, we all tend to gravitate to something that flows over the top of a pant. While it’s smart to keep the midriff covered, this can create an unflattering, boxy, older look. Try the half-tuck. That is when you gather up a portion of your top, twist it, and tuck it into your pants. You can fluff the rest of the top that remains outside around you. This is much more flattering and gives you great style points. While shopping for tops, look for V-necks. Unless you are very thin, a V-neck is always the most flattering neckline. Last, but certainly not least, is shapewear. You may shudder when you think of your mother’s hot, binding girdles, but shapewear has come a long way. It does not have to be uncomfortable! Shapewear is now light and breathable, and it elevates your look and confidence. I always wear a camisole under all garments. It smooths the line and makes me more confident! If you’re nervous about feeling uncomfortable, go up a size or two and find what fits. Enjoy this fall with a new, younger you! Editor’s Note: Holly has been in the fashion industry for over 30 years as a buyer, boutique store owner, visual merchandiser, and fashion show producer. She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE More information at www.elanakattan.com

Totally Vein …And Loving It! By Linda Sutherland
Many people suffer from venous disease or varicose veins. Unfortunately, many of these people assume that it is something they must simply endure in life. Not so! Vein repair is totally within your reach, and help is as close as your first consultation with the compassionate team at Totally Vein. People with varicose veins often recall that their older relatives had issues with varicose veins in years past. Some of the anatomical factors that put a person at risk for venous disease are indeed hereditary (weak venous valves, for example), but the condition can be caused by pregnancy and other hormonal changes or by working at a job that requires you to be on your feet most or all of the day. A great deal of professions require that people work on their feet, so it is no surprise that 25 percent of the population suffers from this malady. Risk increases with age, approximately 50 percent of people over the age of 50 will have venous disease, according to Dr. Zadalis. A couple of popular myths about vein disease may be stopping you from getting the treatment you need. First of all, many people assume that vein treatment is for cosmetic purposes only and provides no health benefits. This is not true. Some people do undergo vein treatment primarily for cosmetics, and there’s no denying that sealing a diseased vein will improve its lumpy look. However, varicose veins can be accompanied by pain, swelling, difficulty sleeping due to restless legs, and even ulcers. Those symptoms can all be alleviated with vein treatment. That first myth goes hand in hand with the second one—that people assume insurance won’t cover vein treatment (because it improves aesthetics). In many instances, this is also not true. A chronic disease is causing the symptoms that are contributing to a lower quality of life, and many insurance providers will cover today’s simple treatments, which require little to no downtime. What great news for people with bustling lives who cannot be out of action for long but want authentic relief! Dr. Bob Zadalis had been a general surgeon which included venous procedures for nearly 20 years when he joined the team at Totally Vein in 2018. He spent the next year observing procedures and expanding his knowledge in every aspect of vein treatment. Now, he goes to work every day loving the practice that he has chosen. This uniquely skilled surgeon has dedicated his life to improving the lives of his patients and returning to them the quality of living that was missing from their day-today activities. “There are so many people who make the determination to live with their condition, rather than seeking the treatments that can change an undesirable
12
September 2020
situation into a positive and happy outcome,” he says. “My priority in this profession is to inform the public that they do not need to suffer any longer with the symptoms and conditions that accompany venous disease.” What options are available if you wish to seek advice and information from the team at Totally Vein? First, they will set you up with a consultation to discuss your lifestyle, symptoms, and what outcomes you are expecting from treatment. Before any vein treatments are started, they perform duplex ultrasound to diagnose the cause of your varicose veins. It is a painless way for the team to diagnose your specific venous disorder. From there, they will create a proposal for the treatment of your specific symptoms. Most procedures involve closing off a diseased vein, after which the body naturally re-routes blood to healthy veins. A popular option is VenaSeal, a technique that uses injected adhesive to seal the vein. VenaSeal allows you to immediately return to normal activities. Radiofrequency closure uses heat to close the diseased vein. Most patients can return to their normal routine within a day. Sclerotherapy is the wonder treatment for spider veins. In this procedure, a solution is injected into the vein, causing it to shrink and collapse. Totally Vein also offers a newer technique known as Veinwave, which uses heat to close spider veins. It is an outpatient treatment that allows an immediate return to normal activities. These are just some of the treatments available to patients at Totally Vein. The devoted team at Totally Vein is entirely focused on giving their patients an outstanding experience. They were the first in Omaha dedicated solely to the treatment of spider veins, varicose veins, and venous disease. They bring over 15 years of experience and knowledge to the table, and their contribution to improving their patients’ lives is undisputed. Let them show you how you can stop venous disease in its tracks and improve your symptoms and appearance with one procedure! Things to Worry About Borrowing Trouble
By Sharon Knierim
Are you a worrier? Do you obsess about things that you cannot change? Welcome to the club. It seems that since the beginning of time, people have worried and fussed about their personal lives and the lives of others. We worry about success and being happy. We strive to make others happy and spend untold amounts of time reconciling family matters, world problems, property issues, and…well, sometimes it seems there isn’t enough time in the day to worry about everything. If you are keeping a physical list of topics to worry about, you might be overdoing it. Our dear mother was a worldclass worrier. Looking back, she probably did have reasons for concern. She and Dad raised five children on a 160-acre farm that seemed to have its own mind about production rates. When Mother was asked if she worried less about her children now that we were grown and gone from home, she replied, “Oh, no. Now that I can’t see you every day, I worry about what you’re doing and if you are healthy and doing well.” That’s a classic answer from a true worrier. There is a long-held belief in some faiths that worrying is a sin. Well, we don’t want to be sinners, do we? That in itself is a good reason to give up worrying. Just walk away from it. That may sound easy, but we all know it’s not. As a very young person, I used to be sure that if I worried

enough about something awful happening, it would not happen because of my ability to worry it away. That logic is flawed and really offers no comfort. Besides, if the awful thing did happen, I would blame myself and worry that I hadn’t worried enough about it. Does that make sense? It shouldn’t, and it doesn’t. As an adult, I still worry, but at least I have changed my tactics. It seems that humans are hardwired to worry. Do you suppose Adam and Eve worried during their stint in the Garden of Eden? Do you suppose Christopher Columbus worried? Or the many wives of Henry the Eighth? You can bet they did, and maybe you can understand why. In these instances, worrying itself did not and would not have made a difference. Christopher Columbus probably countered his worry with the science and logic available during his journey.

As for the wives of Henry, well—maybe there was a way to escape their fate, and maybe there wasn’t. Either way, sitting around ruminating wouldn’t have changed anything. (Still, I would have worried, too.) When we are truly honest with ourselves, we realize that worrying is nothing more than the negative use of energy. It accomplishes nothing. It is best to be aware of a potential situation, in case action needs to be taken, but don’t invite trouble by actively imagining the worst possible scenario. One close friend has suggested that the art of worrying is perhaps a defense mechanism. Her feeling is that as long as we spend our time and energy worrying, we are held in place by it. According to this wise sage, worrying requires no immediate action. She may be partially right. Another friend has suggested that worry is a false pathway to martyrdom. There may be some truth to this idea. Worry can certainly be used to make other people feel guilty. Who hasn’t arrived home later than expected, only to be told, “I was so worried about you!”? This usually precedes, “You should have called.” If you are on the worry bandwagon, see if you can get off of it. Worry creates stress, and we all know what that can mean to our physical and mental health—not to mention our relationships and productivity. This is not to suggest that we all become absolutely blasé. Still, there are more positive approaches to handling concerns. If you are worried about someone in your life, sit down and have a heart-to-heart, diplomatic conversation. Many people who are the target of worry don’t realize they are causing anxiety for others. The point of a discussion like this is not to make anyone feel guilty or remorseful but to determine methods to handle the builtup trepidation. If fear and worry about world affairs is taking a big chunk out of your stamina, change your habits. Look for positive happenings and make positive things happen. Take action. There is a lot of happiness to be had in life without clouding it with worrying about things we cannot change. Whether you turn to your faith or find the answers in logic or positive methods of problem-solving, giving up unnecessary worrying is always a good move. WE September 2020

Vantage Point
Claxton Fireplace Center Radiating a Warm Glow By Linda Sutherland
Is there anyone who doesn’t enjoy sitting down by a warm fire on a wintry evening? Who doesn’t love sitting around a firepit, roasting marshmallows and telling stories? For centuries, a fireplace has been a symbol of warmth and survival, a gathering place that conveys feelings of safety and security. One family business who epitomizes these symbols of hearth and home is Claxton Fireplace Center, owned and operated by father and son team Dan and Brandon Claxton. Dan has owned his thriving business since 1994, and Brandon’s been involved in the business for 16 years. They bring a high standard of quality to every fireplace they design and install. The highest priority at this family business has always been to provide their clients with exceptional service and imaginative, creative results. It is certainly not by chance that Dan and Brandon have stayed in business as long as they have. Their pursuit of quality over quantity and the desire to exceed expectations ensure that their clients are pleased with the ultimate outcome. The team’s original ideas and dedication to a successful collaboration with clients are at the core of this business. Dan and Brandon meet with clients initially to find out what they have in mind regarding a fireplace treatment and what would best suit their needs. There are many options when it comes to fireplaces, they say. “We discuss with clients their particular lifestyles and what would work best for them.” Many people are not familiar with all the fireplace options available today, and Dan and Brandon are happy to provide the education their clients need to make informed decisions. As with any home or commercial design, trends come and go, and Dan and Brandon are up to speed on the seemingly endless possibilities available today in fireplace design. If you need inspiration, you can visit the beautiful showroom at Claxton Fireplace Center, where you’ll find displays that include everything from traditional to contemporary designs. Some clients decide to have a gas insert installed in a pre-existing wood-burning fireplace. Others prefer a freestanding stove or electric logs. Still others want an original fireplace redesigned or resurfaced or a new mantel installed. Whatever their clients can dream up, Dan and Brandon can make it happen. They relish the creative aspect of their profession and want the individuals and businesses who seek their services to be pleased with the outcome. When asked what it takes to orchestrate and run such a successful business, Dan stresses that “being in business with the purpose of realizing people’s dreams and ideas takes a balance of your creative

side and your business side. We all have busy and stressful lives these days, and my goal is always to achieve the desired result that my clients expect and deserve.” Dan delights in bringing the right design elements to every project, making the end product both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Claxton Fireplace Center is the place to go for all things related to the fireplace. (As they say on their website, they have “Answers For All of Your Burning Questions.”) However, if you’re not in the market for a fireplace (or a fireplace upgrade) at the moment, one of their many other services may still be of use to you. They are certified to perform many chimney services, such as chimney inspections, rebuilding, sweeping, and tuckpointing (that is, brick and mortar repair). Dan and Brandon are strictly conscious of the safety concerns that a chimney and fireplace can present and bring all their knowledge and experience to the table. In addition to the ability to put a fireplace in any room in the house, Dan and Brandon specialize in outdoor kitchens. They are experts at installing welcoming firepits, outdoor grills, and smokers for the chefs in your family! If you want some added protection from the elements as you enjoy the grill on your deck or patio, you’ll be happy to hear that Claxton Fireplace Center also installs retractable awnings and motorized Sun Screens. Their use of superior products, their years of expertise, and their dedication to quality workmanship guarantee that you will have an unsurpassed experience. Dan, Brandon, and the team at Claxton Fireplace Center are proud to be known for their quality craftsmanship and customer service. Visit their showroom and you will see for yourself what they have to offer for your home or business. From the beginning design to the completion of the project, you will know that you are their priority and that they are striving for the best outcome for you. Claxton Fireplace Center is located at 709 North 132nd Street, in Omaha. To view an extensive gallery of their work, visit them online at claxtonfireplace.com. Fresh Concept
Improve Your Child’s Life Child Psychology By Janette Calabro
We’ve all witnessed young children in meltdown at the grocery store or throwing a temper tantrum at the park. Older children and teenagers may display more muted emotions as they ride the roller-coaster of adolescent woes, but their feelings are every bit as strong. Everyone knows about these emotional upheavals from deep within the human brain, but how many of us know what causes them and how to help children handle them? Child psychologists can help us to understand what’s happening and how to help children with a variety of treatments. Just as pediatricians are medical doctors who specialize in the physical health of children, child psychologists specialize in a wide range of well-studied emotional and mental conditions that impact children and families. Children and adults often need different treatment, even when they are facing similar conditions. A child’s mind works differently than an adult’s, and child psychology specializes in a how a young brain functions during life challenges. Early experiences affect a child’s development, and that dominoes into a foundation for behavior, learning, and health. Serious issues that are left untreated may resurface and become even more difficult later in life. Child psychologists help heal children and adolescents so they can better tackle adulthood. Child psychology addresses the checkpoints experienced during a child’s life challenges. As children grow, their methods of communication change, as do their abilities to express emotions like sadness or embarrassment, their abilities to cope with hardships, and their cognitive aptitude to think, learn, and solve problems. Sometimes, children have to cope with more than just the normal parts of child development. In tough times, professional help can be a life preserver for the rest of their journey. Psychologists tackle everything from development to behavior, from emotions to the socialization of how a child relates to others. Many factors influence how a child grows up, from the cultural values and customs where a child lives to the family’s social class to the relationships a child has with peers and adults. Many adults go through a divorce. We think of it as an issue for adults, but the truth is that children experience divorce right along with their parents. Scared and confused, they may struggle to understand why they are split between two homes or even worry that the divorce is their fault. Teens may externalize their emotions as anger, sometimes blaming or siding with one parent. The stress is emotionally taxing to the whole family, but children may also endure the stress of changing schools, moving to a new home, or adapting to having only one custodial parent. This dynamic increases the risk of damage to children’s emotional and mental health. Parents can help by maintaining a healthy relationship with each other after the divorce. Children

often develop better self-esteem when parents balance a warm and understanding attitude with effective discipline and follow-up consequences, when necessary. Children need to be taught how to manage their feelings in a positive way, and they learn by example. If you and your ex-spouse need help learning how to coparent, seek help. Unfortunately, millions of children are abused, neglected, or mistreated by adults. Serious harm includes physical violence, exploitation, and verbal abuse, and abusers often convince children to keep abuse a secret. Silence or withdrawal may be a sign that a child is being hurt, physically or mentally. National hotlines like the National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline (866-331-9474) and the National Child Abuse Hotline (800-4-A-CHILD) are available 24 hours a day, as are immediate resources such as police and local government agencies. Child psychologists are trained to help children deal with emotions. Kids need to feel safe, and coping skills can be taught after the child is out of danger. If kids see themselves as helpless victims, mental health problems stack up. There are numerous child abuse education and prevention resources online and multiple children’s books written to help children deal with these regrettable experiences. The American Medical Association describes neglect as “an act or failure to act that results in serious harm or imminent risk of harm.” Neglect is the most common type of abuse—more common than we’d like to think. Sadly, many children go through the experience of a loved one’s death. Teens and school-aged children may cover up their sadness and anger by withdrawing or experimenting with drugs. A healthy outlet like one-onone counseling from a third party can help them cope. In therapy, children are encouraged to express their fears, unload their guilt, and ask healthy questions to sort things out. Adults aren’t the only victims of mood disorders like depression or anxiety. When toddlers scream, they are generally trying to share feelings they don’t know how to express in words. In older children, persistent fears and extreme sadness could be a form of internalizing disorders or thoughts and feelings. When those fears interfere with school or relationships at home, it’s time to seek professional help. Examples of anxiety

include being separated from parents, paralyzing fear of school or people (social anxiety), and specific phobias such as fear of dogs or high places. Children also experience general anxiety—an overwhelming fear of the future or of bad things happening. No one feels happy or calm all the time, but when teens and children are constantly irritable and angry, it could result in more harm without intervention. Physical symptoms such as stomachaches, headaches, and fatigue can be clues to anxiety. Panic attacks, characterized as sudden episodes of heartpounding, sweaty-palmed fight or flight, may also occur. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that anxiety in teens is on the rise and that one in three adolescents will experience anxiety or depression. High expectations and the pressure to succeed, a world that feels scary and threatening, and an unrelenting connection to social media can contribute to feelings of unease. Factor in genetics, specific brain chemistry, and different personalities on top of these life events—it’s easy to see how stress levels can lead to overwhelming sadness or anxiety. Untreated depression can lead to suicide, which is the second leading cause of death for adolescents. Lifelines such as 24/7 hotlines provide confidential support, but prompt and professional help from a child psychologist can be lifesaving. Watch for symptoms such as hiding emotions and kids retreating into themselves. Listen to your teen and watch for troublesome behaviors like impulsiveness or aggression. Trigger phrases such as “nothing matters” should never be taken lightly—seek help immediately if a young person makes this sort of comment. Addiction to any substance can also be a major factor in anxiety and depression. Don’t overlook what may seem obvious, like a family history of suicide or even a chronic medical

condition. Drug addiction and substance abuse for the vulnerable adolescent population can be triggered by a need to mask their feelings, to dull their pain, but that is only dancing on the edges of a deep, complicated problem that can best be diagnosed by a child psychologist. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic disorder that affects millions of children, persisting as difficulty with maintaining attention, a state of hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior. Low self-esteem and poor performance in school can result, so an early strategy is vital. One notable treatment for mood disorders and diagnosing ADHD is brain mapping. These days, many psychologists use brain mapping to see what areas of the brain aren’t functioning as they should be. From a sensory cap covering the child’s scalp, the software captures brain wave patterns, converting them into a visual map for review. From that brain map, a doctor can identify irregular brain waves and recommend a customized protocol for treatment. Not all practitioners use brain mapping, so check ahead of your appointment. You should also check with your insurance provider to see if this type of testing is covered. Child psychologists or family therapists may offer group therapy, in which the entire family (or just a couple of family members) can sort out confusing or painful emotions together. In some cases, working through things as a group can be the best way to heal. Support groups of peers who are dealing with similar situations can also be a great resource. If your child is struggling with behavior or emotions, don’t dismiss it as “just a phase.” Seek help. Improve your child’s life. Suburban Bridal “We Want to Find the Perfect Dress for You” By Jackie Byers
Every bride wants the chance to look like a jaw-dropping dream as she walks down the aisle. When you choose your dress at Suburban Bridal, you will! Mary Lou Scherer, the owner and designer at Suburban Bridal, has been in the fashion business since she was a teenager. As a young model, she worked on both coasts, accompanied by the chaperone that her mother insisted on. “The parties were almost unbelievable,” Mary Lou recalls. “It was an amazing time in my life. Marilyn Monroe and I had an occasional correspondence for years. I made a lot of friends that I have stayed in touch with.” Though modeling was an exciting career, it was not the career Mary Lou wanted. “My heart and head were both in fashion design,” she shares. Mary Lou earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa, followed by advanced degrees in architectural design from the National Institute of Dress Design, which was affiliated with Northwestern University. “I nervously showed my designs to a friend in the business,” Mary Lou recalls. “He took them to New York. His kindness launched my career. With his help, I began to do freelance design for five or six companies.” As the single parent of four young children, Mary Lou had no intention of moving to New York City. Instead, she opened Suburban Bridal in Omaha, and she has loved every minute of it. She designs gowns for a private collection, which is represented by stores all over the world. In the United States, each store has approximately a five-state radius. Eventually, Mary Lou brought her daughter, Lisa, into the business. “Lisa always had a passion to help brides on a budget,” Mary Lou continues. When she lost Lisa to colon cancer in 2016, Mary Lou designed a new line of bridal gowns. “We call it Lisa Lou, and it is available only at Suburban Bridal,” Mary Lou says. “We use handmade lace and jewel embellishments with couture construction. We market it at 75 percent less than most bridal gowns.” How is that possible? By cutting out the middle men. The cost of most bridal gowns includes 50 percent for advertising and 25 percent for distribution from the West Coast. “We incur none of those costs,” Mary Lou declares, “so our Lisa Lou gowns cost 75 percent less than couture gowns made by other companies.” The customer service at Suburban Bridal includes special touches like a free fabric storage bag to put the gown in after the ceremony. “Plastic garment bags are hard on the dress,” Mary Lou explains. She admits that her care for her customers is not just about service—she gets emotionally attached to the brides who buy her

gowns. “We often stay in touch after the ceremony,” she says. The pandemic, of course, has impacted everything. Suburban Bridal shut down early in March and did not reopen until June. Now, shipping times for newly fabricated dresses are incredibly long. Never fear, she emphasizes, Suburban Bridal still has dresses to sell. “Some are pilot projects; others are discontinued items. We are offering tremendous deals on these! I know Lisa is cheering the sales.” Without markets to attend during the pandemic, Mary Lou has turned to online browsing to see how styles are changing this year. “The fit-and-flare, the A-line, the ballgown, the trumpet, the mermaid— these popular styles, and combinations of styles, allow us to design the perfect gown to make each bride shine as the center of attention,” Mary Lou says. “My studies in architectural fashion allow me to make subtle changes to ensure a perfect fit. I am often fussier than the bride about how the dress fits and flatters! When you think about spending several hours in the dress, you realize how important a dress designed for your body can be.” During pandemic restrictions, some couples have chosen to have a small ceremony now and a big reception later, when guests are able to travel and congregate more safely. Though this must feel like a disappointment to many brides, Mary Lou points out a silver lining: It may allow brides a second chance in the dress. “If the reception is delayed, she can don the dress again later!” Mary Lou advises against bringing an entourage when you’re trying on bridal gowns. “Sometimes, too many episodes of ‘Say Yes to the Dress’ can influence friends’ comments,” she points out. “You don’t need an audience to choose a dress. The one exception to this rule is your mom. If she can be with you, she will enjoy dress selection as much as you do.” Suburban Bridal also sells bridal veils and accessories. Mary Lou loves designing, and limited store hours allow her time for this passion. Suburban Bridal has now reopened at 2607 South 156th Circle. You can check out designs at suburbanbridalomaha. com. Good Looks
Turn Back Time Try Injectable Fillers
By Loretta McCollum
When you look at your face in the mirror, are you happy with what you see? Does the person looking back at you reflect how you feel inside? If your reflection looks older, or angrier, or more tired than you feel, it’s hard to put your best foot forward. If you would like to turn back the clock a bit on lines and wrinkles but don’t want to go under the knife, injectables may be the answer. The FDA has approved several injectable fillers that add volume to the face. These injectables fill in wrinkles and lines and plump up areas that have lost fat pads, such as the cheeks, the under-eye area, and the temples. The lips are also a popular treatment area. Treatment can take as little as 20 minutes and usually requires minimal downtime; in some cases, the results are immediate. Some fillers even contain lidocaine to make the treatment more tolerable (after all, it is still an injection). If you have a skin infection, pimples, rashes, or hives, you should avoid injectables until your skin is clear. Those who have a bleeding disorder or severe allergies should consider other options. Hyaluronic acid fillers under the brand names of Juvéderm and Radiesse are commonly used. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the skin, helping to keep it elastic. Although the fillers are synthetically produced, they are almost identical to the hyaluronic acid produced naturally in the body. These fillers help keep the treated
area plump and hydrated. Results last approximately six months to one year, maybe longer, as the body gradually absorbs the particles. These fillers are a good choice for covering scars and filling in creases and folds. They are sometimes used along with Botox to soften lines between the eyebrows. Calcium is another naturally occurring substance used in injectable fillers. Microscopic particles are suspended in a gel-like substance that is thicker than hyaluronic acid fillers. Results last one year or more. Calcium fillers can also stimulate the body’s collagen production. This type of filler is typically used for deep lines and wrinkles on the face and is sometimes used on the hands. Sculptra is a poly-L-lactic acid, which is a biocompatible synthetic substance that has been used for years in dissolvable stitches. It’s known as a collagen stimulator, and it smooths fine lines by stimulating the body’s own collagen production. The filler itself ›››

actually dissolves after a few days, but the results of the collagen stimulation can last more than two years. It’s commonly used on those deep marionette lines. At least three treatments are necessary. Bellafill is a synthetic substance similar to Sculptra. While Sculptra dissolves quickly, Bellafill inserts a microsphere (tiny ball) that remains beneath the skin to keep it plumped. It’s a good choice for minimizing acne scars. Some injectables are actually drawn from the patient’s own body and injected into the area to be treated. Plasma therapy and fat transfer are two of those procedures. These procedures are not used as often as synthetic fillers, but they bring the benefit of eliminating the possibility of an allergic reaction, since the filler came from the patient’s body. Plasma therapy was introduced in 2009 to treat crow’s feet, scars, and the look of thin, crepe-like skin. The doctor draws the patient’s blood into a test tube and separates out the platelets by spinning the blood in a centrifuge. Platelets are then injected into the skin to stimulate collagen and cell growth. It takes a few weeks to see results, but they last up to one year. Fat grafting involves removing fat from one area of the body and placing it in another area. It is usually performed on an outpatient basis, using general anesthesia. Unlike most filler treatments, up to two weeks of downtime is required, depending on the amount of fat used in the graft. Last, but not least, we come to Botox. This is a popular filler choice for brow furrows, crow’s feet, and frown lines. It’s been around for a while and is used for migraine treatments, among other things. It works by preventing muscles from contracting, which provides a smoother appearance to the skin on the surface. Results are immediate and last for several months. The qualifications for administering injectable fillers vary from state to state— some require a physician or nurse practitioner; others allow technicians and medical aestheticians. You can check with your state’s Department of Health and Human Services to find out what’s required locally. Always choose a provider with extensive experience in the procedure that you desire. Ask for before-and-after photos of previous clients; a reputable provider will be happy to show these to you. In addition to performing a procedure, an experienced provider can help you select the best procedure for your needs. Interiors by Design
Designing From the Ground Up Balance Your Needs and Your Style By Robyn V. Powell
Whether your home project is a new build or a remodel, one of the most important design elements to consider is flooring. The floor is the blank canvas that determines every design decision you’ll make once it’s down. It’s important to decide which flooring best suits your home, your budget, and the demands of your household, room by room. Hard surface flooring (as opposed to carpeting) is trending for a number of reasons. Besides offering many design possibilities, hard surfaces are a healthy and sustainable choice, providing better indoor air quality and reducing dust and allergens. Thanks to technology, there are more flooring options to choose from than ever before. This year’s trends are all about natural looks. Beautiful natural stone and wood floors have always been a top choice among homeowners, but the hefty price tag made them inaccessible to many...until now! Thanks to innovative technologies, manufacturers are producing flooring that easily passes for natural wood and stone at a fraction of the cost. Homeowners no longer have to choose between form and function. They can have great-looking floors that are durable, waterproof, and affordable. Natural stone such as marble, granite, and travertine have long been valued for their durability and beautiful natural veining. Early versions of engineered stone lacked realistic veining but, as technology improves, the gap is

closing. Homeowners can now achieve the beauty of stone at a lower price point, with the added bonus of low maintenance. Classic hardwood remains the top choice for homeowners. Trending now is wide-plank white oak hardwood in a matte finish. Its natural look and feel lend elegance and warmth, while the light tones make your home feel expansive. Planks with texture, such as wire-brushed, hand-scraped, or slightly distressed, provide a lived-in feel and deftly hide wear and tear. That said, hardwood flooring can be sanded down and refinished over the years to repair damage and adapt to evolving style trends. Solid hardwood is beautiful, tough, and versatile enough to be used almost anywhere in the home. Engineered hardwood, built with a real wood top layer on an artificial base, allows you to showcase the beauty of wood in high-humidity rooms like kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and laundry rooms. Hardwood floors can last a lifetime, ›››

require little maintenance, and can even be heated with in-floor systems for underfoot comfort. Polished concrete is being used in exciting new ways that work well across a spectrum of design aesthetics. From industrial farmhouse to elevated refined spaces, sustainable and durable concrete is relatively inexpensive, lends a minimalistic clean vibe to any space, and is a great choice in heavy traffic areas. Thanks to its excellent thermal conducting properties, it works especially well with radiant in-floor heating systems, making it very efficient at warming up large flooring areas. (If you decide against radiant heat, consider area rugs as a comfortable solution.) Sealing is recommended at installation and every couple of years after that, but regular maintenance is easy. Just run a dry mop across floors weekly and then mop with a gentle cleanser. For high traffic rooms like mudrooms and kitchens, nothing stands up to wear and tear as well as porcelain tile. Scratch- and dent-resistant porcelain is easy to maintain, lasts for decades, and is available in an array of design choices to suit any style. Larger size tiles continue to trend, with 12x24 and even 24x48 inches gaining popularity. Ink-jet technology has opened up a world of design possibilities that combine the look of natural wood and stone—travertine, marble, limestone, even concrete—with the durability and low maintenance of porcelain. Earth-friendly laminate has evolved to a new level, delivering affordable durability with realistic wood and stone finishes. High-end laminate won’t age or develop the patina of natural wood finishes, but its lower price point makes it an attractive option. Choosing the right flooring type is only part of the equation. A quality installation is key to ensuring the successful performance of your floor. The failure of most flooring can be traced to installation errors. Using professional methods, ensuring the proper condition of the subfloor, and mitigating for moisture issues all affect the outcome, appearance, and performance of the floor. Always work with a professional installer who has experience working with the type of flooring you’ve selected. Like many home project choices, the flooring in your home is a personal decision. Basing your decision on style and durability will lead you to a great investment in the enjoyment and value of your home. Put a Spring in Your Step This Fall! Orthopedic Surgery for Joint Disorders
By Leslie Byrne
Are arthritic knees keeping you from gardening? Does that old shoulder injury keep you out of the pool? If your joints are stopping you from enjoying your daily activities, it’s time to schedule an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon. Orthopedic surgeons treat the musculoskeletal system, which includes the bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and cartilage. Problems or injuries to any part of the musculoskeletal system can cause acute or chronic pain that can limit mobility and affect daily life. An orthopedic surgeon can determine the cause of damage and discuss appropriate treatment options, which may include therapies like physical therapy, medication or injection therapy, or surgical treatment. As people age, old injuries or even just wear and tear on joints can get to the point when medical intervention is needed to relieve the pain. In the United States, 26 percent of women and 19 percent of men have been diagnosed with arthritis. The risk of arthritis increases with age—almost 50 percent of people older than 65 years will be diagnosed with some form of arthritis. Osteoarthritis is when the joints wear down and the bone begins to change. It is the most common form of arthritis and can occur in the hands, hips, and knees. It happens over a long period of time and can cause pain, stiffness, and swelling. Obesity is a major cause of arthritis because of the pressure of excess weight on the joints.
Common orthopedic surgeries include joint replacement surgery (knees, hips, and shoulders), anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery, knee or shoulder arthroscopy, ankle repair, and spine surgeries. “Arthroscopy” refers to a less invasive surgical technique during which an arthroscope is inserted into the joint through a small incision. Most orthopedic surgeries require rehabilitation or physical therapy after surgery. Physical therapy is crucial to help minimize stiffness and to help the patient restore motion to the joint. Rehabilitation can last weeks or months. No matter what joint is repaired or replaced, patients should expect their recovery time to last several weeks to several months. If a recovering orthopedic surgical patient is unable to safely get around using a cane, walker, or crutches; cannot get in and out of a chair independently; or does do not have help at home; the patient

should plan to spend time in a short-term skilled nursing facility. Skilled care provides the extra help that some orthopedic patients need for a few days or weeks before they can safely finish recovering at home. Most orthopedic patients are able to resume normal daily activities within six weeks, but it may take four to six months to fully recover. When joint replacement is required, orthopedic surgeons use a variety of strong materials to take the place of the bone, cartilage, and tendons that nature provided. The materials used for joint replacement include titanium or cobaltchromium metal, very strong plastic, and ceramic or ceramic/metal mixtures. Since orthopedic surgery often requires a lengthy recovery time, surgery is rarely the first line of treatment that an orthopedic surgeon will suggest when someone presents with joint pain. A more conservative treatment often prescribed is injections into the joint for pain relief. Corticosteroid injections are common and, many times, are the first-line treatment for osteoarthritis symptoms. Hyaluronic acid injections, better known as gel injections, can provide up to six months of relief before having to be repeated. They are usually used when corticosteroid injections do not provide enough pain relief to the injured area. These injections include substances that are chemically similar to natural human joint fluid and work as lubricants to surround the joint. Most insurance companies only approve these injections every six months, so be sure to check with your insurance company regarding coverage. Other options include cold injections to freeze nerves around an injured knee. These are sometimes used as an osteoarthritis treatment for patients who do not qualify for knee replacement or do not wish to have replacement surgery. A new and exciting option for some patients is stem cell therapy, in which the patient’s own bone marrow is used to alleviate inflammation and promote healing in an injured joint. Although orthopedic surgeons are trained to treat the entire musculoskeletal system, most surgeons specialize in certain joints or regions. For example, some surgeons primarily treat ankles and knees, while others only treat shoulder problems. No matter why your joints are hurting, do not put off a visit to an orthopedic surgeon. These professionals offer many different treatments or therapies to provide real relief. Sources for this article included: orthoinfo. aaos.org, my.clevelandclinic.org, and cdc.gov. WE

Let’s Let It In You Are What You Do
By Janet Van deWalle
“One small change in the morning can change your whole day.” —Dalai Lama
Well, two months after reinstating this routine, my days have definitely changed—for the better. I’m smiling more. I am happier!
I recently decided to change my morning routine. The old me stayed in bed and struggled to get up the energy to get going in my day. I had allowed myself to be burdened by the world negativity that I had become surrounded by. So, on June 3rd, I got up, did some light exercise, and listened to a positive Abraham/Hicks video on YouTube.
“As you think thoughts that feel good to you, you will be in harmony with who you truly are.” —Abraham/Hicks I have reconnected with me, with who I really am. I am NOT the same person who stopped listening to Abraham/Hicks six years ago. I am better. I am nicer. I treat others with a whole lot more respect than I did back then. I have grown. I have changed. My husband, Manny, gets a lot of the credit for leading me in this direction. Manny has taught me about respect. He has taught me about slowing down. He has taught me about listening. He has taught me about appreciation. I believe the reason I “forgot” about Abraham/Hicks for six years was that I had to change and catch up with who I really am. I had to know what I didn’t want before I could know what I did want. I had to get to a point that I was ready to take the next leap. The leap of being better.
“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make, makes you. Choose wisely.” —Roy T. Bennett Years ago, I would start every day with a “shot” of Abraham/ Hicks. I had CDs in my car. Sometimes I would play a different one every day; sometimes, if I found one that really hit home, I listened to it over and over. It was my morning routine. The outcome was that I had some pretty amazing days.
“You are powerfully on your path, and you are just beginning the best part of your life. —Abraham/Hicks
“Depending on what they are, our habits will either make us or break us. We become what we repeatedly do.” —Sean Covey

Life Never Stops Teaching What Have You Learned? When I was a child, we didn’t know our paternal grandparents very well because we didn’t get to see them very often. When we lived out west, they were in Minnesota; when we were transferred to the Midwest, they had relocated to California. We saw them more as they got older. What I remember most are stories from Grandma, who lived to the age of 98, and advice from my wise, 80-year-old grandfather. When I was about 10 years old, Grandpa told me to learn something new every day. I remember thinking, “That’s easy! I’m in school. Of course I’ll learn something new every day.” I really remember long division. Dad and I almost came to blows when he helped me…he didn’t use the same vocabulary the teacher did. Eventually, I got it! About five years later, Grandpa said, “You’ve moved a lot. I hope you learned something about every place you’ve lived. It’ll help you better understand the things you’ll learn later.” Our family moved often enough that I attended 12 different schools. I learned about different climates, histories, geography, and geology. Knowledge about these things did help later…in school and in life. Just before he died, Grandpa wrote me a letter. I was in college. “Never stop learning because life never stops teaching,” he advised. I recently came across that letter while sorting through boxes of papers and keepsakes from the past. It got me thinking. What have I learned? I read and try to keep up with what is going on in the world.
By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS
Doing crosswords keeps my brain more agile, whether I’m learning a new fact, a new word, or an alternate meaning or usage of a familiar word. Interviewing our Women’s Edition advertisers for articles presents opportunities to learn not just about their businesses but about the attitudes and talents that make their businesses successful. I’ve increased my pool of knowledge by learning from the many friends I’ve made over the years…friends with different backgrounds, thoughts, careers, and interests. Recently, while chatting with a Facebook friend, I learned that he and his wife grew up in one of the small towns where I lived as a youth. I’ve known them for years, but that coincidence hadn’t arisen. I’ve found that I still have a lot to learn about our country. I’ve discovered that the world is really a small place when you take the time to talk to people. I’ve learned a lot about myself: I can handle adversity; being adaptable is an asset; and I shouldn’t sweat the small stuff… it’ll take care of itself. Grandpa was right: Life never stops teaching. Learning doesn’t just take place in schools. You can learn everywhere…just keep your eyes and ears and brain open. Look for the new and unfamiliar. Be curious. What have you learned? Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Focus on Finance
Wall Street 2.0/Main Street 2.0 Changing the Way America Invests
By George Morgan
Traditionally, the term “Wall Street” refers to the big New York City brokerage firms that dominate the stock market. “Main Street” is where regular people live, work, and play. Wall Street and Main Street are often seen as the opposite ends of the financial spectrum. Wall Street tends to view Main Street types as dabblers in a game they don’t understand. Main Street may see Wall Street types as a group of high flyers who overcharge for their advice. The reality is that both sides have a high degree of dependence on the other. Main Street needs Wall Street to gain access to the stock market in order to earn a better rate of return on their savings. Main Street customers help Wall Street generate the fees they require to maintain their lifestyle. These two goals may seem at odds. Another way of looking at it is that what’s good for Wall Street is bad for Main Street and vice versa. For decades, this vision of Wall Street and Main Street was the dominant view of the financial world. Like all institutions and relationships, though, they evolve over time in response to changing conditions. In the 1970s, wheels were set in motion, and this movement, over the course of decades, would alter the relationship between Wall Street and Main Street. The transformation began in the early 1970s, when government regulators eliminated Wall Street’s fixed commission structure, which had been the norm since 1779. This allowed brokers to negotiate the fees they charged their clients and initiated a price competition among firms for customers. The twist to this story is that the brokers reduced their commissions to big institutions and the wealthy but increased the fees they charged Main Street. The fee war set in motion a series of events that would take decades to come full circle. The first was the introduction of index funds. These are mutual funds that simply buy and hold all the stocks of a market index such as the S&P 500. This strategy provides a reasonable return to investors and eliminates the need for Wall Street’s expensive advice and transaction fees. The second innovation was the development of discount brokerage firms that eliminated investment advice and reduced transaction fees to bring their cost to investors close to zero. The final and most significant innovation was a change in the tax code that led to the development of 401(k) plans. The importance of 401(k) plans is that they allow workers to accumulate investable assets and require that they choose their own investments with little or no direct assistance from Wall Street. Five decades ago, less than 10 percent of the American population owned stock. Today, due to the introduction of the 401(k) and the power of compounding, Americans have over $8 trillion dollars of retirement funds invested in the stock market. That’s
42

a lot of money…and with that amount of money comes influence. Today, the discount brokerage firms and the index funds companies are what I call Wall Street 2.0. The tens of millions of Americans who own the assets of the 401(k) accounts are Main Street 2.0. Wall Street 2.0 allows investors to participate in the stock market and the growth of the American economy in a way that was once almost exclusively the domain of corporate giants and the affluent. The amassed assets in 401(k)s give Main Street 2.0 the resources necessary to benefit from the products of Wall Street 2.0. The old Wall Street remains focused on large corporations and wealthy individuals. They are conducting business the way they always have—employing complex investment strategies and collecting significant fees. At the same time, Wall Street 2.0 and Main Street 2.0 have formed a mutually beneficial relationship, in which Wall Street 2.0 has eliminated the expenses associated with pricey investment advice and steep transaction fees. They then pass on the cost reductions to the investors of Main Street 2.0. Though this relationship is beneficial, there is still room for improvement. Currently, only a fraction of Main Street 2.0 is aware of the existence of Wall Street 2.0. The Old Wall Street and their media supporters are not eager for the story to get out. As the Wall Street 2.0/Main Street 2.0 relationship grows, word of mouth will increase awareness among potential investors. Main Street 2.0 will eventually realize that the products and services of Wall Street 2.0 are in their best interests and that they do not need the magic touch of the Old Wall Street in order to become successful investors. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. To determine which investments may be appropriate for you, consult your financial advisor prior to investing. WE

Pollinator Gardens Treat Yourself, Treat the Ecosystem
By Linda Sutherland
Let’s talk about pollinator gardens. Perhaps you know they have something to do with bees and butterflies but have never investigated to see what the benefits would be. I have great news for you! You will gain rich rewards for yourself and the entire ecosystem…and all you have to do is plant a garden. Why plant a pollinator garden? Pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds are an important part of our ecosystem because they are crucial to fruit and vegetable production. When you plant a pollinator garden, you support and maintain pollinators by supplying food in the form of pollen and nectar. Once they discover this food source, it encourages them to stay in the area and keep pollinating our crops. There are numerous benefits to a pollinator garden, and the rewards are spectacular! One reward of planting a pollinator garden is that it controls unwanted insects in the garden itself and in surrounding areas. If you are plagued with nuisance bugs, drawing pollinators to your yard is a great alternative to using toxic sprays. A garden that is designed to attract pollinators must have plants of different colors, sizes, and shapes. The birds, bugs, and even bats that your diverse garden attracts will eat many problem bugs, and the assortment of plants will help to make sure no single pest can take over the garden. Attracting pollinators can also boost your yields in a vegetable garden. When bees decide to investigate your blooming flowers, they
are not just eating—they are also transferring pollen from flower to flower so plants can grow delectable vegetables and fruits. In some cases, this is required for fruits to appear. For instance, cucumber and squash vines cannot produce fruit unless they are pollinated by an insect. Watching pollinators at work is also an amazing educational opportunity for adults and kids alike. You can see, firsthand, the flower structure, insect behavior, and plant reproduction while watching nature at work. What better way to learn about science and teach children than with a ringside seat at nature’s finest show? To get started, you need to know which perennials will attract our pollinator friends to the backyard. Let us go with some of the triedand-true flowers that will entice pollinators every time. First up is Monarda, commonly known as bee balm. This plant is hardy, prolific, and a real stunner. Its blooms have a daisy-like shape, with tubular petals

that appear in beautiful shades of purple, pink, red, and white. These sun-loving plants will bring beauty and pollinators to your garden year after year. Coneflowers (Echinacea) are also at the top of the pollinator must-haves. In my own experience, coneflowers perform very well and are just about the happiestlooking flowers on the planet. They come in almost every color you can dream up, and they are fool-proof! They are speedy growers and they re-seed themselves continually. (You can also collect the seeds yourself to plant elsewhere or divide and transplant crowded plants.) They bloom from midsummer through fall and are native to the United States. They are drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, and basically trouble-free. After they bloom, they attract songbirds with their seed heads, so think twice before dead-heading! They need full sun, but they are not picky about their soil. The many varieties of coneflower are proven winners to attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Next, let us look at allium. A first cousin to onion, garlic, and scallion, this ornamental version is quite striking, colorful, and reliable. There is something very artistic and romantic about these beauties all standing at attention in a garden. Growing higher than their neighboring garden dwellers, their statuesque appearance is stunning. The flower itself does not have an onion aroma, though the stems do, when they are cut. One benefit to that smell is that deer and rabbits dislike it. Best of all, they are like magnets to pollinators. Lastly, we come to the magnificent lavender plant. These plants are tough and heat-resistant but also charming and irresistible. Lavender has many attributes, not least of which is that unforgettably pleasing scent. You can pick this flower and hang it dried in a room, and it will immediately fill the space with its aromatherapy properties. Lavender is a great example of how pollinator gardens can help the yard stay pest-free—while attracting bees, lavender also repels moths, fleas, flies, and mosquitoes! We’ve reviewed a few of the most popular and fool-proof perennial pollinators here. Though there is much to add about the use of annuals in a pollinator garden, this should get you started. This type of project is so much more than just a garden! Sources for this article included: fs.usda.gov, ecolandscaping.org, and savvygardening.com. WE September 2020

Alzheimer’s Disease Heartbreaking Memory Thief
By Linda Barnes
We’ve all heard about the devastating effects of dementia—some of us have seen the effects in person as they stole the memories of a friend or family member. Of the many diseases we may experience as we age, dementia can be especially frightening because there is no prevention or cure. “Dementia” is a general term for significant loss of memory and ability to think clearly. Difficulties with remembering, thinking, and reasoning are characterized as dementia when they are serious enough to interfere with daily functioning. A person’s ability to focus, follow directions, or perform familiar tasks may be impaired. Brain changes may make emotions more difficult to control. Personality or mood changes may occur, making social interactions challenging. Mixing up times and places is common, as is misplacing items. Speaking, writing, and handling visual information may be difficult, and judgment may be impaired. Dementia that is caused by certain medical conditions, medications, vitamin deficiencies, alcohol use, blood clots, or tumors can sometimes be resolved by treating the source. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia (named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer, who identified it in 1906). It is distinguished by formerly healthy neurons in the brain that stop working. They are unable to make the connections with other brain cells that are essential to memory function, thinking, and problem solving. We all

lose some neurons over time, but the neuron loss is much greater with Alzheimer’s disease, and it gets worse as time passes. Physicians have a variety of means to help diagnose dementia, including medical history and physical examination, neurological exams, tests of mental status, and diagnostic imaging of the brain. Specialists in dementia and Alzheimer’s disease can offer professional help with evaluation and diagnosis. At specialty clinics, patients and caregivers can learn more about the condition and acquire the coping skills they will need to face this difficult diagnosis. Though some forms of dementia can be resolved, Alzheimer’s disease does not currently have a cure. However, there are treatments that can help alleviate the symptoms, particularly in the early stages of the disease. These may temporarily slow the worsening of symptoms and make life better for patients and their caregivers. Treatments can improve quality of life by stabilizing or reducing symptoms for a limited amount of time. Some prescription medications are most effective in the early to moderate stages of the disease, highlighting the need for early diagnosis. Other
www.womensedition.com
medications, sometimes used in combination, may help in moderate to severe cases. Research continues to develop more effective drugs. Improvements in behavior may be effected by non-pharmaceutical coping strategies. Adjusting the patient’s environment may help increase security and comfort, quieting mental distress. Social networking and support groups can aid both patients and caregivers. The Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) and other local organizations sponsor support groups for caregivers. Many caregivers find it useful to meet with other caregivers to learn more about managing the disease and about self-care. Research is also investigating broader therapeutic approaches. A promising trial with mild to moderate cases saw significant improvement through a program that included medications, dietary supplements, and specific regimens for diet, exercise, and sleep. More research is needed. When a family caregiver is available, many people with Alzheimer’s disease are more comfortable in their familiar home environment. It is a heavy lift for caregivers, though. Some in-home caregiver services have employees who are specifically trained to work with patients who have dementia. Special daycare facilities can be another solution for caregivers who need respite, whether they need an occasional break or a daily solution during the workday. Staff members are trained in memory care and can provide a safe environment, meals, and engaging activities for patients with dementia. When living at home is not possible, residential facilities geared to memory loss may be the answer. In some cases, memory care units are part of a larger facility, like a long-term care facility or assisted living community. In other cases, memory care is provided in a standalone residence. Look for a facility with high standards for individualized care, focusing on each resident’s personal interests, lifestyle, and needs. Health, fitness, and the preservation of remaining abilities should be prioritized, and families and staff should communicate regularly. Indoor and outdoor spaces should be secure and monitored for the safety of residents. Transportation and personal care are often included, along with support and education for family members. There’s no denying that dementia is a difficult diagnosis. With the right support, there is life left to live and reason to hope! Prostate Cancer Awareness Month Understanding Risk and Early Detection
By Angella A. Arndt
Did you know that September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month? According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), prostate cancer is the second most common form of cancer in American men (after skin cancer). The ACS has estimated that, in 2020, there will be over 191,000 new prostate cancer cases and more than 33,000 prostate cancer deaths in the United States. All men are at risk for prostate cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Out of every 100 American men, about 13 will get prostate cancer during their lifetime, and about 2 to 3 men will die from prostate cancer.” Age is the most common risk factor, and the odds of getting prostate cancer increase with age. AfricanAmerican men are more likely to get prostate cancer than other men, and they’re more likely to develop this cancer at an earlier age. They are twice as likely as other men to die from prostate cancer. Other risk factors include high-fat diets and close family history of prostate cancer—men with a father or brother who had prostate cancer are more likely to develop the disease themselves. The prostate is a small gland located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. As a part of the reproductive system, the prostate’s primary functions are to produce a fluid that is a component of seminal fluid and to aid in transporting seminal fluid. Although some men may not exhibit symptoms, prostate cancer does have warning signs. These include weak or interrupted
50
September 2020
urination, increased urination (notably at night), painful or burning urination, blood in the urine or semen, difficulty emptying the bladder, erectile dysfunction, or persistent pain in the pelvis, back, or hip. These symptoms can also be caused by other health problems, so men should check with their physicians. The most common prostate problems include prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and prostate cancer. Prostatitis is inflammation of the prostate. It is usually treated with medication, sometimes in conjunction with relaxation exercises, physical therapy, and diet changes. With BPH, the prostate is enlarged due to abnormal (but not cancerous) cell growth. BPH may be treated with a “watch and wait” approach (if symptoms are not bothersome), drug therapy, or surgery. Prostate cancer occurs when prostate gland cells start to grow out of control. The most common ways to check for prostate cancer are a digital rectal exam (DRE), prostate-specific antigen test (PSA), and a prostate biopsy. A DRE is a standard prostate exam, conducted to determine the size, firmness, and texture of the prostate; hard areas,
www.womensedition.com
lumps, or growth beyond the prostate; and pain related to touch or pressure on the prostate. A PSA test is often used with a DRE to detect prostate cancer in men aged 50 years and older. Prostate cells make PSA, which may leak into the blood; if this happens, a test is conducted to see how much PSA is in the blood. An elevated PSA level may be related to prostate cancer, prostatitis, BPH, or other factors. In the case of a slightly elevated PSA level, a patient and his physician may decide to conduct regularly scheduled PSA tests to track changes. If prostate cancer is suspected, the physician will recommend a prostate biopsy. A positive biopsy test result indicates the presence of prostate cancer. A Gleason Score is determined by the cancer cells present in the biopsy and provides information on the likelihood of the tumor spreading. Another diagnosis option is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) like FirstScan. This non-invasive imaging test can diagnose prostate cancer (or exclude it) with a high level of accuracy. Treatment depends upon the stage of the cancer, PSA level, Gleason Score, and the patient’s age and overall health. Treatment may include surgery, radiation therapy, cryotherapy, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy. In some cases, men who have prostate cancer without symptoms but have other serious health conditions (including advanced age) that are likely to limit their lifespan don’t undergo active treatment for prostate cancer. Several types of physicians and health care professionals manage prostate health, including family doctors, internists, urologists, urologic oncologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, and pathologists.Visit with your primary physician to determine whether you should see a specialist. You may want to focus on the risk factors for prostate cancer that are under your control: obesity and a high-fat diet. Conveniently, maintaining a healthy weight and exercise regimen can help with many health issues. Consult a nutritionist if you want to learn more about what makes a healthy diet and what nutrients you should be consuming. Being mindful about prostate changes and making healthy lifestyle choices may decrease prostate cancer risk and provide some peace of mind. When the Rubber Meets the Road Choosing and Maintaining Tires
By Brennan Hallock
We’ve all heard the phrase “when the rubber meets the road,” and there’s a good reason it’s so familiar. Tires are essential for getting us from point A to point B, and when those tires start rolling on the surface of the street, it means we are on our way somewhere. As we pull away from the curb, though, we often don’t give any thought to what kind of tires are on the vehicle or whether or not they’re in good condition—we simply trust that they will get us to our destination safely. In reality, there are a few factors you should consider before you drive away. Why is it so important to maintain your tires? The tires on your car do many things without you even recognizing them—though you would definitely miss them if they were gone. Tires support the vehicle’s load, transmit traction and braking, absorb road shocks, and change and maintain the direction of the vehicle. Every vehicle’s tires should be inspected regularly. You can inspect your tires yourself as often as you’d like, but you should also have them checked by a mechanic. Normal tires last about three or four years if they are regularly rotated. When you have your tires rotated, your mechanic can also check the tires for proper wear. This should be done about every six months or 6,000–8,000 miles. During a tire inspection, your mechanic will pay attention to tread depth, signs of uneven wear, air pressure measurements, cracking, bulging, cuts, snags, or punctures. The recommended pressure per square inch (PSI) is listed on the side of every tire, and this is checked using a tire pressure gauge. Most passenger car tires recommend between 32 and 35 PSI. In between full inspections, it’s important to use your tire pressure gauge to see if your tires need any air. Underinflated or overinflated tires tend to wear unevenly and not last as long. Maintaining proper PSI will help keep your tires in good condition. If a tire is damaged, it doesn’t always have to be replaced. In some cases, a tire can be repaired. If a tire is punctured, it can sometimes be patched, which may carry it through its original intended lifetime. Most mechanics and dealers recommend patching a tire no more than three times and having only one patch per third of the tire. Vehicles can benefit from different kinds of tires, and you don’t have to keep the ones that came with your car. Most tires fall into one of three categories: allseason, summer, and winter. Where you live and what you are using your vehicle for both influence which kind of tire you should purchase. Before choosing the type of tire, though, you should determine what size of tire you need. Your owner’s manual or the placard on the driver’s side doorjamb will give you the recommended tire measurements, which will look something like this: P215/60R16 94T. The P215/60R16 refers to the tire’s
52
September 2020
measurements such as width and diameter, the 94 indicates the load index, and the T is the speed rating. Knowing these numbers will help you in your tire search, as not all tires will fit all vehicles. Once you’ve determined the tires available in your size, then you can choose the tires that best fit the purpose of your vehicle. All-season tires are the most common and versatile, and these fit most mainstream cars. These typically come in S and T speed ratings. Performance all-season tires (H and V speed ratings) come on many newer cars. They have better cornering grip but may not last as long. Ultra-highperformance all-season tires and summer tires (ZR, W, and Y speed ratings) are mainly for sports cars and performance sedans. All-season and allterrain tires for trucks are larger and designed for hauling and towing. Winter/snow tires are easy to identify because they have a mountain and snowflake symbol on the sidewall of the tire. The tread is also busier, with slits known as “sipes.” These tires are designed to handle icy winter driving and are best suited for driving in areas with serious winter weather conditions. In all of these categories, there is a broad range of pricing for the tires. Consider how often you will be driving on the tires, how long you want them to last, how much you want to pay, and how consistently you will be rotating the tires. When you’re preparing for your next motoring adventure, take a few minutes to look over your tires before you hit the road. If they need attention, you’ll be glad you found out while you were still parked at home! Sources for this article included: bluestar.com, caranddriver.com, and motorbeast.org. WE

Does Your Home’s Exterior Need a Lift? Call Albracht Perma Siding and Window Company By Marge Shoemaker
Your home is likely the most valuable investment you have. It endures a lot of wear and tear…some of which we don’t notice until we look for it. Now that cooler weather is bringing us indoors, it’s time to take stock. How are your windows? If they’re like mine, they need a good washing—inside and out! Can you see clearly through them, once they’re clean? If your windows are doublepaned, there shouldn’t be any moisture trapped between the panes. Condensation is an indication of a broken seal or crack. Check your doors. Do they close securely? Can you see gaps between the frame and the door? Do you feel a breeze when the door is closed? Any of these issues could indicate a problem. If your door is solid but just out of style, perhaps it’s time for an inviting new door to greet your guests. Inspect your siding. Is it cracked? Are pieces loose or missing? Have recent storms created pockmarks or scars? Does it need a coat of paint? If you’re tired of painting, you may want to replace old wooden siding with something more maintenance-free. How about your roof? Are your shingles intact? Are you finding plant sprouts in the gutters or downspouts clogged with debris? Do heavy rains bring water damage into the house? If you answered “Yes!” to any of these questions, I suggest you call Albracht Perma Siding and Window Company. Al Albracht bought Perma Stone (later changing the name to Perma Siding) in 1958, and it’s been familyrun for 62 years. Tom Albracht and his brother, Steve, have run the company together since the early 1990s. “Dad bought the company the year I was born,” Tom notes. “We learned the company from the ground up. My siblings and I have all helped out in one capacity or another over the years.” Although Tom and Steve are not ready to retire yet, Tom says they’re hoping the next generation will eventually take over and keep it in the family. The Albracht brothers are particular about the products they present to their clients. “We want to give our clients the best materials possible so that we (and the manufacturers) can offer a reliable warranty.” Perma Siding deals directly with the manufacturers. By cutting out the middleman, Tom explains, they can offer their customers better prices. If you live in an older home and have put off getting new windows because your windows are unusually sized, Perma Siding can help. “Some older homes won’t accommodate current standard size windows and doors without a lot of retro-fitting,” Tom says. To solve this problem, Perma Siding often has windows and doors custom-made to ensure a good fit. “Custom may cost a little more than what’s
54
September 2020
found in the big box stores, but a better fit is more economical and efficient in the long run,” he advises. One of the manufacturers that Tom and Steven Albracht Perma Siding works with is ProVia. “For years, we’ve used ProVia doors because of their high energy-conservation rating,” Tom says. Recently, they’ve expanded their association with ProVia to include windows, too. According to a survey of remodelers and contractors in Remodeling magazine, ProVia vinyl windows are rated number one in a quality-ranking list of 45 manufacturers. That was no surprise to Tom. “We’re comfortable, based on our past experience with the manufacturer and this survey, that the change to ProVia windows is beneficial to everyone concerned,” he states proudly. Perma Siding has worked with other manufacturers for years, building trust on all sides. Leaf Sentry gutter covers, produced locally in Elkhorn, are worry-free. Mastic siding, virtually maintenance-free, has been a reliable mainstay for years. IKO offers an assortment of shingles, including architecturally designed composites that resemble shake shingles. DaVinci shingles are molded to resemble tile. “We know our manufacturers have high standards in maintaining quality control over their wares, and our manufacturers know that we hire competent workmen to install their products,” Tom shares. “Our crews know that we and the manufacturers will stand behind their work. We pass all that trust—and savings—on to our customers.” Although some installations depend on the weather, Perma Siding strives to keep their crews working yearround. Siding can be installed in the winter, as can doors and windows, though warmer weather may offer more comfort for the homeowner. Roofs, gutters, and decks generally require warmer weather for safety reasons. Plan ahead. Allow time for you and the crew to prepare. Call now for an estimate. Bids are good for six months. Albracht Perma Siding is bonded, insured, and licensed by both the City of Omaha and the State of Nebraska. The office is located at 10723 Mockingbird Drive, in Omaha. The Good Life
Catering for Special Occasions Savor the Freedom
By Maria Harding
Consider all of the steps that need to be taken when preparing food for a gathering or special event. It goes far beyond deciding on a menu. How many people are you serving? Will you have enough dishes, glasses, silverware, and napkins on hand? There is also the timeline to consider. When do you need to start preparing the food—hours before the event? Days? What if your local grocery store doesn’t have the ingredients you need, in the quantities that you need? Thinking about all of these variables may be enough to dissuade you from hosting at all. Don’t despair! If your hope is to enjoy the gathering as much as your guests will, consider hiring a caterer. Enlisting the help of a catering service gives you the freedom to be creative with your party planning. When the logistics of meal preparation are no longer your concern, your imagination can take flight. Caterers will have set menus from which you can build a meal by picking and choosing favorites. Many caterers are happy to customize dishes, building on your original ideas or even replicating family recipes. Interviewing caterers and planning the menu can be a fun event in itself, as many chefs will invite you to sample their signature dishes. There are several practical points to keep in mind when choosing a caterer. Check online reviews for catering companies, and also ask friends and family for recommendations. Hiring a caterer with referrals from a variety of sources can give you confidence that your event will be managed professionally. Start with the basics when contacting catering companies. Know the exact time, date, and location of your event. Consider how much flexibility you might have if the caterer is unavailable at that time. If you are planning a large event, make sure that the caterer can accommodate the number of people you plan to invite. Consult a map when selecting your catering company. This is one aspect of choosing a caterer that many hosts might not have considered. If food is prepared off site, the travel time and distance can affect the freshness of your meal. If the catering company is not familiar with your venue, that can also delay arrival time or complicate preparation and service. If you or your guests have food allergies, need vegetarian options, keep kosher, or have other dietary requirements, ask the catering company if they have experience preparing meals with attention to those details. Ask to see a catering company’s credentials. Professional companies should have current paperwork issued from the health department and from their insurance agency. The company’s insurance policy should cover their employees if they were to be injured on the job and should also cover any accidental damage to your home or the party venue. Caterers offer a variety of options for food presentation and service. Warmed trays allow guests to serve themselves buffet-style in more casual settings. Professional servers are responsible for keeping the food at the appropriate

temperature, for replenishing empty trays, and for maintaining the supply of plates and utensils. More formal dinners can include table service. Waiters might distribute and clear multi-course plates, freshen drinks, and keep the table space tidy. Some caterers also offer bar service. Typically, you can expect to employ one bartender and one bar-back for every 50 guests. Be realistic about your budget. Talk openly with your catering company to make sure you understand exactly what is and is not included in their fee. Ask about any expenses that might not be obvious, such as gratuities. It’s important to have good communication about the details so your caterer can meet all of your expectations. You don’t have to wait for a once-in-a-lifetime event to take advantage of the freedom a caterer can provide—caterers can assist with events of all sizes. Add stressfree pizzazz to birthday parties, fundraisers, or graduations. Discuss with your caterer how you might creatively splurge in one area of your meal planning. For instance, you might serve gourmet donuts from a whimsical pegboard, or plate simple barbeque on elegantly gilded china. Wouldn’t it be fun to have an experienced bartender for an evening with just a handful of friends? You might even hire a caterer for holiday gatherings like Thanksgiving, Sukkot, or Christmas.Your family won’t have to fret over potluck food preparation and transportation. Instead, you will all have more time to relax and enjoy the day together. Special events seem to center around food. We enjoy planning it, we find comfort in experiencing it together, and we bond over the memories it brings. If you dream of being a host who is free to enjoy the occasion without complication, you can rely on catering professionals to ease the preparations. Pest Control
Protection From Unwanted Guests
By Anne Yankus
Pest control companies are well versed in the prevention and extermination of most common household pests, such as mice, spiders, centipedes, various insects (silverfish, cockroaches, crickets, flies, stink bugs, ants, fleas, bed bugs, and termites), bats, and pill bugs, as well as yard pests such as mosquitos and ticks. Some pest control professionals can help you when larger outdoor pests, such as raccoons or squirrels, make their way inside. Most common household pests are simply a nuisance; others can actually damage your house if left unchecked. Termites, of course, will damage the wooden frames within your walls, floors, and ceilings. Raccoons can tear through insulation and whatever else is exposed in an unfinished attic, and rats and mice can gnaw through wiring and drywall. With this in mind, keeping your home pest-free with regular pest control treatments is essential to the maintenance and upkeep of the structure itself. Though creatures like bats and cockroaches don’t usually cause physical damage to property, they can carry disease and need to be eradicated. In an ideal world, the only kind of pest control you’ll really need is preventative. Most pest control companies will recommend spraying or otherwise treating the exterior of your home anywhere from monthly to quarterly, depending on your location. Exterior pest controls need to be reapplied regularly, as they tend to wash away with the weather. Interior pest treatments, on the other hand,

can be applied less often (perhaps annually), since they’re not exposed to the elements. With the prospect of them visiting your home so frequently, you’ll definitely want to take care and make sure you select the right company for the job. Some good questions to ask your prospective pest control professionals include the following: How long have they been in business; do they have any testimonials; are their exterminators licensed, bonded, and insured; how much training do they receive; how do they decide what treatments are necessary; do they offer written quotes; are their treatments safe for people and pets; and do they offer any guarantee on keeping existing pests from returning after treatment? For additional references, you can always check your state’s pest control association or the website of the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) for a list of reputable companies. ›››

You may want to ask a few additional questions about the chemicals your pest control company is using, especially if you have young children or pets. The exterminator or technician who visits your house should be able to provide you with a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) with a list of all chemicals used. While it’s best to keep all children and pets away from treated areas for a couple of hours, it doesn’t hurt to mention up front whatever species of pets you have around the house. That way, the pros can be sure to use a petsafe alternative whenever available. When using more direct pest control methods, like bait and traps, it’s best to place them where pets and children cannot reach. Many pest control treatments are designed to be safe for pets and people, and it’s wise to find a pest control professional who uses environmentally safe practices. Any company that advertises itself as “environmentally safe” or “environmentally friendly” is a good place to start. You can also check out a list of environmentally conscious pest control companies on BeyondPesticides.org (formerly the National Coalition Against the Misuse of Pesticides). If a company is certified through the Green Shield organization, that’s a guarantee that their safe practices have been professionally certified. Experts agree that early spring is the best time to start your pest control treatments and get your yearly interior spray done. Getting treatment right away in the early spring generally means that your prevention will be working before any bugs wake up or hatch after the winter months. This isn’t to say that pest control treatments can’t be effective at other times of the year. If you have an active infestation, call an exterminator immediately. Though nearly any pest can sneak into the house, pests like ticks, mosquitos, and grubs are most often encountered in the yard. To help you enjoy your outdoor space, pest control is available to combat these pests where they live and breed. This controls pests that feed on people and pets as well as those that destroy gardens and lawns. Check with your pro about controlling yard pests. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to pest control. Fortunately, with the right help from a knowledgeable professional, you should be able to keep your home and family safe from pests all year! Beau Joyau
Surround Yourself With Beauty! By Janette Calabro
Beau Joyau is no ordinary boutique. It is run by women, in support of women who want to improve their lives by surrounding themselves with beauty. Pamela Huerta went from nurse to business owner, and she hopes the items in her store will add substance to her customers’ lives. “My foundation is in nursing, so my perspective is to provide service to my clients,” Pamela explains. She hopes that you’ll find joy when you stumble upon the perfect item, but she also wants the time you spend perusing the store to be a joyful experience. Along with a sophisticated selection of apparel, jewelry, handbags, cosmetics, and so much more, Beau Joyau also carries the largest collection of Polish Pottery offered in Nebraska. Polish Pottery is handcrafted from the clay of southern Poland, a white clay that is safe for the oven, dishwasher, freezer, and microwave. The white clay contains no lead or cadmium, a heavy metal that may leach from certain glazes and coatings on typical pots and pans. The glaze finish is kiln-baked at just below 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which accounts for its durability, and the white clay base is chip-resistant and easy to clean. This style of artisan-made pottery dates back to as early as the 14th century. It was really the pottery that got Pamela into retail. “The Polish Pottery was the key for me because that’s where I started,” explains Pamela. “It is truly art, something I could import that is unique. Yet despite the pottery’s beauty, it is meant to be used daily. An individual may have a piece or two in common with another, but how each of them puts it together with their others pieces is what makes their collection unique.” Before Beau Joyau, Pamela spent years working as a critical care nurse. She decided to leave the field of nursing to spend more time with her family. She started selling Polish Pottery from her garage. Between that and attending craft shows, her client base grew by word of mouth. A little over five years ago, she opened a brick and mortar store to expand her inventory and her devoted customer base continued to grow. She hasn’t let the pandemic set her back, thanks in part to the ample size of her store. “When many places were shutting down, we were able to stay open. We have about 2,400 square feet, so there’s enough room to distance easily.” She generally doesn’t have more than four to six customers in the store at a time, and her experience as a nurse leads her to err on the side of cleanliness and safety. She also offers curbside pickup, front-porch delivery, and even virtual shopping with individual clients

on FaceTime. Her new website, beaujoyau.shop is still a work in progress. Pamela’s selection of jewelry is exquisite and exclusive. She started buying pieces from a company out of Miami—a company that specializes in Pamela Huerta, owner replicating upscale jewelry as seen on celebrities and fashion runways. The copies are legal, of course, but limited editions. “These are incredibly wellpriced pieces with the look of authentic diamonds or authentic stones,” she shares. “That’s the whole point of a boutique—to offer something different! Not just with the pottery, but with everything.” Her apparel has the same appeal as all of the other artisan-made items for sale. No matter your size or style preference, Pamela encourages you to wear it well. She wants women to feel uplifted and emboldened. That’s her nursing training again—her instinct is to provide support to her clients, to help them create environments that make them happy. The personalized attention she used to provide to patients, she now provides to boutique clients, accessorizing their daily lives in function and beauty. It’s not unusual for a bride to tote along a picture of her bridal gown (or, sometimes, the gown itself) for an individual styling session for jewelry and accessories. Neither is it unusual for shoppers to seek a unique gift or gift registry. “We should all be surrounded by things that bring us joy,” Pamela concludes. “That’s something that we, as women, as caretakers of our families and ourselves, can somewhat control. The things that happen to us in life, we don’t always have control over, but you can attempt to design your environment to make you happy.” If you could use a little joy and happiness in your life these days, check out Beau Joyau. To see items in person, come see Pamela at 2947 S 108th Street, in Omaha. For a selection of photos and a 360-degree tour of the store, visit beaujoyaune.com. Pamela is currently offering curbside pickup, home delivery, and personal video shopping. Call 402-301-7103 for more details. WE

Positive Perspective
Accentuate the Positive Most People Are Good
By Janet Van deWalle
I have a confession to make: I have become a BIG country music fan. It started years ago, when I attended a Garth Brooks concert. I discovered that country music lyrics are honest, passionate, and, yes, sometimes sappy and corny! The fact remains that I was hooked. My husband, Manny, is the one who got me into this genre of music. He and I dedicated last weekend to listening to Luke Bryan. The song that I kept repeating—over and over again—was “Most People Are Good.” The lyrics were exactly the medicine I needed.
would commiserate with me. Inconsiderate drivers? Disgusting politicians? Downright mean people? Before I knew what happened, I found myself becoming incensed at the rudeness of all of us human beings. I realized that the Universe was doing exactly what it always does: delivering to me what I was focused upon.
“I believe if you just go by the nightly news, your faith in all mankind would be the first thing you lose.” —Luke Bryan, “Most People Are Good”
I admit that when I listened to “Most People Are Good,” I teared up multiple times. I had stopped appreciating. I had stopped looking at the good. I had stopped being grateful. I forgot about the gift that we all are so blessed to have: every single breath.
This song jolted me with the realization that I had been sucked into the negativity of everything bad that is going on all over the world. My faith in mankind was gone. “You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.” —Mahatma Gandhi Over the last month, I have had dozens of conversations regarding the current status of life on Planet Earth. No matter what negative topic I chose to focus on, I could always find someone who
“If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.” —Mother Teresa
“I believe that days go slow and years go fast, and every breath’s a gift, the first one to the last.” —Luke Bryan, “Most People Are Good” The wonderful thing about country music is that it’s okay to cry! You can sing along and learn a lot about yourself and your fellow humankind. Thank you, Luke Bryan, for reminding me: “I believe this world ain’t half as bad as it looks, I believe most people are good.” —Luke Bryan, “Most People Are Good”
