Happy Valentine’s Day, Everyone… February is the month of love! I ran across this quote and thought I would share it with you all: “Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place.” — Zora Neale Hurston I have written many times over the last four and a half years about my marriage with Manny Chavez. We were married on August 25, 2019, and we have known each other for a total of 11 and a half years. I choose this month to express my love and my respect for my husband. Manny is unlike any person I have ever met. He is the best person I know. Every day, he lives by the Navy Code of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. He is a 20-year Navy Retired Veteran. One of Manny’s daily goals is to learn how to be a better person. Every day, he helps me learn and grow. Every day, he proves to me how much he loves me through his actions and his devotion. According to Manny, love is not like a light switch that you can just turn on and off. Love is like a raging fire that no one can put out, not even Superman! He doesn’t just say it, he acts in ways that prove it to me…every single day. I thought long and hard about whether to share my deep, private feelings about Manny in this issue—the month of love! I then realized that for almost 38 years, I have been letting you know about me, my family, and my life. I want you to know that these words are coming from my heart and soul. I have heard from many of you that you have been “reading between the lines” and know about our deep love and commitment for one another. We are constantly told…often by complete strangers…how they can see and feel our love for each other. When I first met Manny, he told me that his goal for us was to have a healthy relationship. To be honest, I really didn’t know what that meant. It has taken me a very, very long time to understand…and I am still learning! Honor, Courage, and Commitment? Manny respects me, he listens to me, he is a gentleman, he is my ambassador, he has my back, he has the courage to apologize when he has made a mistake. Yes, you read that right—he apologizes. I am working on being the same kind of partner for him. Here is to Manny Chavez…Happy Valentine’s Day! And a happy Valentine’s Day to all of you, as well.

Leap Year Dinner by Candlelight—Let’s Eat!
By Kate Beiting
Superbowl Swiss Spread Mix 2 cups of shredded Swiss cheese with 1/2 to 1 cup of real mayonnaise (until you get the consistency you prefer). Add pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder to taste. Add any other spices you like—a dash of hot sauce, perhaps? Stir well and refrigerate until ready to serve. Serve with cut veggies and a variety of toasted breads and crackers. Shrimp Cocktail with Sauces
For the shrimp: Have a bowl of 8 cups of ice at the ready, you will use this to shock the shrimp (that is, to stop them from cooking further). Place 2 pounds of peeled and deveined shrimp (21–25 count) in a large bowl and sprinkle with salt. Heat 8 cups of water in a large pot. Add 3 Tablespoons of salt, 3 Tablespoons of chili powder or paprika, and 1 Tablespoon of celery seeds. Heat water to boiling. Remove the pot from the heat, add the shrimp, and stir several times. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 3–4 minutes, until the shrimp are cooked and no longer translucent (they will be pink). Pour the ice into the shrimp pot and stir until the liquid cools, about 2–3 minutes. Drain the shrimp into a colander and transfer to a large bowl or platter. Refrigerate until you are ready to eat. Serve with lemon wedges and sauces. For the cocktail sauce: Mix 1/2 cup of ketchup with 2 Tablespoons of horseradish, 1 minced garlic clove, salt and pepper to taste, and Tabasco sauce as desired.
For the honey mustard sauce: Mix together 1/4 cup of mayonnaise, 1 Tablespoon of Dijon mustard, 2 Tablespoons of honey, 1 Tablespoon of lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon of curry powder, and salt, pepper, and Tabasco sauce to taste.
Chuckwagon Cowboy Stew
Cut up a 2-pound chuck roast into bite-size pieces. Sauté in a large pot in 1 Tablespoon of canola oil for 4–5 minutes. Sprinkle in 2 Tablespoons of flour. Add salt, pepper, 3–4 minced cloves of garlic, and 1 cut-up onion. Cook for 5–10 minutes. Add 2 cut-up carrots, 2 cut-up celery stalks, 1 or 2 cans of stewed or diced tomatoes, 1 can of drained corn, 1 can of drained pinto beans, 2 or 3 cut-up potatoes, 1 can of beef stock, and 2 Tablespoons of tomato paste. Season as you like—additional salt, pepper, garlic or onion powder, cayenne, or Tabasco sauce. Place the pot in the oven at 325 degrees for 2 hours (stir once or twice). Add 1 cup of peas during the last 30 minutes of cooking. Serve over homemade biscuits, cornbread, or freshly baked bread.

No Reservations Chicken
Heat 2 Tablespoons of oil in an oven-proof skillet. Add 4 flattened, skinless, boneless chicken breasts (or thighs) and sear until golden, about 4 minutes on each side. Transfer to a plate. Add a bit more oil or butter to the skillet, if needed, and add 2 cloves of minced garlic and 2 diced green onions. Sauté for 1–2 minutes, adding 1 teaspoon of red pepper flakes and 1 teaspoon of thyme. Stir in 1/2 cup of heavy whipping cream, 3/4 cup of chicken broth or stock, and 1/2 cup of chopped up sun-dried tomatoes. Bring to a gentle simmer. Add the chicken back to the pan. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of grated Parmesan over the top. Coat the chicken in the sauces and place in a 375-degree oven for 15–20 minutes. Serve with rice, pasta, or crusty garlic toasts.
Shrimp and Sausage Penne
De-case and crumble 1/2 pound of mild Italian sausage. Sauté in a skillet until cooked, then remove from the skillet and set aside. To the skillet, add 1/2 of a minced shallot and 1 minced garlic clove. Sauté for 1–2 minutes. Add one 16-ounce can of diced tomatoes and 1 Tablespoon of chili paste (it’s optional but gives it a kick). Add the sausage back to the skillet and stir in 1/3 cup of heavy cream. Simmer for 10 minutes. Add 8–10 large deveined and butterflied shrimp. Cook for 5 minutes, until shrimp are no longer pink. Add 1 cup of cooked penne pasta, stir to coat, and heat through. Garnish with freshly grated Parmesan.
Heart and Frog Cookies
Mix 1 cup of soft butter with 1 and 1/2 cups of powdered sugar until creamy. Add 1 egg, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and 1/2 teaspoon of almond extract. Slowly mix in 2 cups of all-purpose flour combined with 1 teaspoon of baking powder
and 1 teaspoon of cream of tartar. Roll the dough to 1/4 inch thick between 2 sheets of parchment paper. Refrigerate. Use heart-shaped or frog-shaped cookie cutters to cut out. Sprinkle with decorations before baking, if desired. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 minutes. For decorating after baking, frost as desired and sprinkle with decorations.
Bread in a Pot
Mix 4 cups of all-purpose flour or bread flour with 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of salt and 1 packet of instant yeast. Combine 1 and 1/2 cups of room-temperature water with 1 Tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. Make a “well” in the flour and pour in the water. Using a dough hook (or do this by hand), mix until the flour disappears—the dough will look shaggy. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it sit out for 12–18 hours. When ready to proceed, turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Fold and gently knead several times. Shape into a ball. Place into a large greased Dutch oven. Put the lid on and let the dough rise again for 1–2 hours. Slash an X on top of the dough, then place the (covered) pot into a 450-degree oven. Bake for 30 minutes, reduce the heat to 350, and bake for another 20 minutes until the loaf is nicely browned. The bread is ready when its internal temperature is 200 degrees. Remove to a wire rack and let rest for 30 minutes.
Unforgettable Leap Year Cake
Use your favorite boxed cake mix to make a 2- or 3-layer round cake and frost with prepared or homemade frosting—or use your favorite recipes. Have a variety of candies and cake-top goodies on hand for decorating: candied lips, coated chocolate candies, “kisses,” candy hearts—you get the idea.

Warm Breezes Beckoning?
Outfit Inspirations for a Winter Escape
By Holly Bell
After the holiday rush of shopping, commitments, and winter weather, many of us yearn to relax with a winter getaway to sunnier climes. For me, the fun is not only in the actual traveling, but also in the planning, dreaming, and shopping for a winter escape. One of the best things about vacation is dressing like you are on one! Boutiques and mainstream stores often feature resort collections, and browsing them can be a fun getaway in and of itself. Sun seekers crave a reprieve from the gray skies, work overload, and shortened days. We want to trade up to sunny skies, warm rays, and sandy beaches. Since much of our warm, cozy clothing often comes in darker tones, joyful light colors and patterns help to get us in the vacation mood. One of the vacation mistakes I have made many times is overpacking. You don’t need fully matching ensembles that you are only going to wear one time on your vacation. Mix and match! That’s the secret. I have learned to keep it simple with a few pieces of quality clothing in laid-back styles and wrinkle-free fabrics. Having less to choose from is less stressful…and it opens the door to more shopping while on your trip! A color palette that works together is the first step. Try neutral bottoms with a couple of lively patterned tops, or a favorite color thrown in. Think about what you will be doing and where you will be going and pack specifically for those occasions. Choose some chic clothing options to help you look and feel relaxed and put together. Sneakers are the backbone of any travel wardrobe, so be sure to pack your most comfortable pair. Sneakers have a timeless aesthetic and are acceptable to wear from the Bahamas to Paris. You’ll need some sandals, too. A great choice would be earth-toned, low heeled or flat sandals that can work for both dressy and casual occasions. Longer tailored shorts are also a vacation must-have (they’re casual but can be dressed up or down), as is a white go-anywhere top. Add a tank top or two, along with a button-down shirt that you can wear open like a jacket. Try the simple style of an open floral shirt, showcasing a tank top underneath. For a jaunty vibe, tie the shirt in the front. Don’t forget a sun hat! You’ve been facing low light and gray skies this winter, and you don’t want to burn under more direct sunlight. Designers have styled baseball caps to go with everything from bathing suits to dresses. A visor or brimmed hat is always a stylish alternative. Other important accessories to remember are sunglasses and an all-purpose travel bag that can go with you to the beach. 10
February 2024

Apparel = Jewelry Polish Pottery Even in warm climates, evenings can get cool—or you could end up indoors, enduring overzealous air conditioning. You’ll want to cover up! Add a zip-up sweatshirt for a relaxed vibe and a big shawl for everything else. You can drape a shawl around your shoulders on chilly evenings or tie it around your waist for a bathing suit cover. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even turn your shawl into a halter top…with a little maneuvering and perhaps some help from TikTok. It’s smart to pack clothing with multiple uses! Try using your bathing suit as a body suit. Pair it with a short skirt or pull your tailored shorts over it for an alternate outfit. A body skimming lightweight dress is also a must-have. Choose a dress that you can pack in your beach bag and throw over your swimsuit but can also be worn in the evening, elevated to a dressier look with earrings and sandals. Don’t forget to pack at least one pair of lightweight linen-type pants. Linens are easier to wear now than they were in the past, as more clothing today is made with wrinkle-free fabrics. For strolling down quaint streets, shopping, sightseeing, or lunching in a sidewalk cafe, your goal should be to look effortlessly stylish and cool. Planning what to wear on your warm weather vacation will get you excited for your getaway! A trick of mine is to put together my vacation clothing at home in multiple ways and take a photo of each outfit. When I’m on my trip, having outfit ideas to refer to makes dressing quicker and easier. You will feel so organized and less stressed about choosing your outfits if they are already put together for you! Start dreaming about sunshine, warm breezes, and the perfect warm day full of vacation possibilities. Get your wardrobe and your suitcase ready for a relaxing and well-deserved escape from winter!

BodyWise Therapy, P.C.
Physical Therapy with Myofascial Release
By Angella Arndt
Do you know someone (maybe even yourself) who suffers from acute or chronic pain? Someone who has sought treatment but has not experienced relief? If traditional physical therapy has not helped you, reach out to BodyWise Therapy. These compassionate therapists would like to help alleviate your pain and restore your mobility so you can return to a more active lifestyle. BodyWise Therapy combines traditional physical therapy treatment with myofascial release to treat pain and loss of function due to trauma, bad posture, injuries, scarring, inflammation, or other conditions that cause pain. Fascia is the fibrous connective tissue that surrounds and supports every part of the body, including muscles, bones, organs, nerves, tendons, ligaments, and joints. Healthy fascia is flexible and relaxed and stretches when you move. When fascia becomes tight, distorted, or misaligned, it can cause pain and limit mobility. Early treatment of fascia restrictions may help prevent problems in the future. Shanna Paopao began working at BodyWise Therapy in 2013 and purchased the business in 2014. A native Nebraskan, Shanna graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1999 with a master’s degree in physical therapy. She took her first course in myofascial physical therapy 20 years ago and found her passion. As an athlete, she has endured injuries and experienced chronic pain. “I understand people who have pain and how it affects their daily life,” she says. Her diverse treatment background includes experience in home health, outpatient and inpatient care, and skilled nursing facilities. BodyWise therapists use the John F. Barnes method of myofascial release, a hands-on technique using gentle stretch, compression, and pressure to soften tissues, release tension, and realign the body. “Taking time is important. We all need to slow down, be more aware, breathe, and take time to listen to what our bodies are telling us,” Shanna asserts. “This approach can reduce pain and improve mobility and function.” The myofascial treatment approach can successfully address a surprisingly wide range of conditions, including acute and chronic back pain, neck pain, headaches, migraines, myofascial pain syndrome, fibromyalgia, TMJ problems, chronic fatigue syndrome, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, piriformis syndrome, sciatica, painful scars, post-surgical rehabilitation, lymphedema, motion restrictions, muscle spasms, muscle tension, bursitis, frozen shoulder, shoulder impingement, and tendonitis. The approach can also treat women’s health issues, such as pelvic pain, painful intercourse, menstrual problems, and incontinence, as well as soft-tissue restrictions from breast cancer surgery. If a patient has extensive pelvic floor issues that cannot be fully addressed with myofascial release, Shan12

na will refer her to a specialist. The BodyWise treatment Shanna Paopao, PT, Owner approach focuses on treating an issue’s root cause, not just the symptoms. Her approach differs from most traditional physical therapy clinics because they do not use the typical intense treatment methods. Myofascial release considers the mind/body connection and the mindfulness aspect of treatment. “I have an individualized, one-on-one approach that emphasizes myofascial release,” Shanna says. During an initial visit, patients receive a physical therapy evaluation to assess posture, muscle strength, and movement capability. An issue in one part of the body can cause pain in another area. The assessment strives to identify the underlying issue causing the pain, not just the pain’s location. The treatment plan will always include the patient’s goals. Patients may also receive a home treatment plan that includes stretching, strengthening exercises, and movement lessons to help achieve physical therapy goals. Insurance typically covers services with a referral from a physician. Shanna’s patient care philosophy is straightforward. “I believe in treating patients the way I would like to be treated. I believe it’s important to spend time with patients, maintain communication, and follow up.” She says it is gratifying to hear patients say they can stand up straighter, walk further, and perform activities with less pain after treatment. What should patients consider when selecting a physical therapist? First, make sure they are licensed. Then, ask questions about their training, experience, and specialties. “A good therapist will listen, answer questions, and accept feedback,” Shanna advises. “What are your goals? How are you treated? If it’s not the right fit, it is all right to look elsewhere.” Shanna loves to help people overcome pain and mobility issues so they are better able to perform basic life tasks and enjoy activities with their families. “The best thing someone can say to me is that they do not need to come back because they have achieved their goals,” Shanna concludes. BodyWise Therapy, P.C. is located at 2504 South 119th Street, in Omaha. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You can find her online at bodywiseomaha.com or reach her by phone at 402-932-8686.

A Woman’s Work
Valentine’s Day
A Complex History
By Deborah Daley
One of the most popular holidays on our calendar is Valentine’s Day. On this day, we pause to express our love to those near and dear to our heart. A billion-dollar industry has grown up around this festival of love. Ironically, the origins of this lovely day may be quite the opposite. The back story of this holiday of candy and Cupid is fairly bloody…and a bit muddled. Many historians have investigated the beginning of this holiday. Let’s explore the history of the day and see how it morphed into the occasion we celebrate in the 21st century. The day is named, of course, for St. Valentine—we all know that by now. But why? Who was St. Valentine? According to The New York Times, it’s possible that the holiday is based on not one but two men named Valentine. There were, after all, two Valentines executed on February 14th (albeit in different years) by Roman Emperor Claudius II in the 3rd century. The Catholic Church may have established St. Valentine’s Day to honor these men, who they believed to be martyrs. It’s also possible that one of these men, St. Valentine of Terni, had been secretly officiating weddings for Roman soldiers against the emperor’s wishes, making him, in some eyes, a proponent of love. (In the eyes of the emperor, not so much.)
It’s said that St. Valentine wrote the first “valentine” greeting to a girl that he tutored and fell in love with while he was imprisoned. According to The History Channel, before Valentine’s death, he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine.”This remains a commonly used phrase to this day—we see it not just in love letters but in all kinds of festive notes and cards received on February 14th. Alas, these romantic anecdotes are really only legends. So little is known that the Roman Catholic Church removed the feast day from its calendar, though St. Valentine is still recognized as a saint. Ancient Roman history brings us another theory about the basis of Valentine’s Day. It has been suggested that the holiday has origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia. The festival, which celebrated the coming of spring, included fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by lottery. If you’re thinking that none of this sounds very lovey-dovey, that’s because Valentine’s Day did not begin to resemble the romantic holiday we

Happy Heart, Healthy Life!
What Women Should Know About Heart Disease
By Janette Calabro
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States—an alarming statistic that
shouldn’t be taken lightly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that“over 60 million women (44%) in the United States are living with some form of heart disease. In 2021, heart disease was responsible for the deaths of 301,661 women—about 1 in every 5 female deaths. Research has shown that only about half (56%) of US women recognize that heart disease is their number 1 killer.” We can all do something about these alarming facts. Although heart disease is difficult to reverse, progression can be slowed, and some symptoms of heart disease are reversible with medication, revascularization (stents or bypass), and lifestyle changes. Some practitioners believe that you can actually reverse coronary artery disease. If you or a loved one has heart disease, and you would like more answers, talk with your cardiologist, physician, or specialist about a plan that works best for you. In this article, we’ll study causes and symptoms of heart disease and how they differ in women and men. We’ll also review risk factors, treatments, and prevention through lifestyle changes. We can turn this around! What causes heart disease? The CDC says that high blood pressure is a leading cause of heart disease and stroke. Out-of-control blood pressure can damage the lining of the arteries, enabling plaque buildup. High blood pressure is often underdiagnosed in women, and statistics show that more than 56 million women in the Unites States have high blood pressure (that is, higher than 130/80). Hypertension during pregnancy and diabetes during pregnancy contribute to the risk of developing heart disease for younger women. High cholesterol is also a risk factor for women and heart disease. The Mayo Clinic states that “with high cholesterol, you can develop fatty deposits in your blood vessels. Eventually, these deposits grow, making it difficult for enough blood to flow through your arteries. Sometimes, those deposits can break suddenly and form a clot that causes a heart attack or stroke.” Traditional medications and holistic remedies can often help reduce cholesterol levels. We’ll examine a few lifestyle changes later in this article. Some medical conditions also contribute to heart disease, although many of these risks are within our control. Smoking, diabetes, excess weight, a poor diet, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol consumption, stress, and depression all contribute to developing heart disease. An annual physical promotes knowledge. Your doc can recommend lifestyle changes and help you find healthy ways to cope while you implement them. Men and women have many differences, and that includes the anatomy of the cardiovascular system. Women have smaller blood vessels and fewer red blood cells. That means that women don’t take in as much oxygen as men do. Women also maintain lower testosterone levels than men, as well as higher levels of estrogen and progesterone. When estrogen levels drop after menopause (usually around age 55), a woman’s risk of heart disease increases. This is one reason that women 20
February 2024
generally develop heart disease 10 years later than men do. Although natural estrogen before menopause helps protect women against heart disease, replenishing estrogen with hormone replacement during or after menopause brings other health consequences. Talk to your physician for a caseby-case look at risks and benefits. For those considering hormone replacement for heart health, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) states that women under 60 or who are at or near menopause should consider that “hormone replacement therapy (HRT) significantly reduces all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease (CVD) whereas other primary CVD prevention therapies such as lipid-lowering fail to do so.” On the flip side, John Hopkins says that women over 50 are at an increased risk for heart disease and should avoid estrogen and progesterone. In other words, timing according to age, underlying health conditions, and other factors should be discussed with your doctor before you commit to hormone replacement. What are the symptoms of a heart attack in women and how do they differ from symptoms for men? Chest pain is the most common symptom for both men and women, usually in the left breast. Other symptoms for both men and women include pain the back or in between the shoulder blades, as well as pain in the neck or throat, jaw or teeth, shoulders, and legs. Women may have other symptoms, like headache, dizziness, indigestion, numbness in the hands, nausea, vomiting, choking sensation, coughing, and shortness of breath. Fatigue is often the most common symptom for women. Of course, these symptoms can be caused by things other than heart disease. Call 911 if you’re in any doubt. It’s better to get care than risk heart failure. Technology advances constantly, and medical professionals have many effective diagnostic testing tools to determine the best exam and treatment. One of the best tests to diagnose heart disease is a coronary angiogram. This type of imaging takes a deep look at how your coronary arteries supply blood to the heart muscle. A test called high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) measures inflammation. High-sensitivity CRP tests help establish heart disease risk before symptoms are even present! An old-fashioned blood test can determine cholesterol levels. Professionals can measure your low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol. Too much LDL causes plaque buildup. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) or “good” cholesterol helps carry away the bad stuff. Docs can determine the
www.womensedition.com
levels of triglycerides or fat in your blood, non-high density lipoprotein cholesterol, and total cholesterol. Blood tests can also identify natriuretic peptides, an indicator of heart failure. Blood pressure checks, pulse checks, and stress tests (think walking on a treadmill while hooked up to electrodes) are also tried-and-true diagnostics that give your physician valuable information about your heart health. An echocardiogram measures the size of the heart and how well the muscle and valves work together. Your doctor may order this test, depending on what they’re looking for. An electrocardiogram (ECG) test records electrical activity of the heart and can find problems with the heart’s rhythm. A cardiac CT scan uses a special X-ray that moves around the body for 3-D images of your heart. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) painlessly produces images of the heart muscle and blood vessels. A thallium scan is done while resting, measuring how well blood reaches the heart through your coronary arteries—a good alternative to the stress test for people unable to use a treadmill. Surgeries such as coronary angioplasty and stent placement are common procedures to open clogged arteries. During this procedure, your heart surgeon guides a thin tube to the narrowed section of the artery. A very small balloon inflates to help widen the passage. Inflation allows more blood flow. A stent (wire mesh tube) keeps the artery open; some stents also release medication to enhance open arteries. With bypass graft surgery, a healthy blood vessel from elsewhere in the body replaces a damaged blood vessel. The swap works wonders! Medications for heart disease include drugs to lower cholesterol levels or blood pressure, beta blockers to slow
heart rate, calcium channel blockers in place of beta blockers, ranolazine for chest pain, nitroglycerine to widen heart arteries, and even a regimen of aspirin to help prevent blood clots. What can you do to prevent or reverse symptoms at home? We’ve heard the most common advice over and over: Eat healthy, exercise regularly, and stop smoking. It’s repeated often because it works! Garlic has been used for centuries to boost heart health, and studies have documented that garlic helps reduce blood pressure and inflammation. An antioxidant called CoQ10 may help keep blood vessels flexible. WebMD cites a study done in 2015 that shows that CoQ10, combined with the antioxidant selenium (taken for at least four years), cut heart-related deaths in half. Red yeast rice may lower cholesterol like a naturopathic statin. Flaxseed is rich in omega-3 fatty acids to help lower inflammation and blood pressure (ground seeds are preferable over oil). Vitamin K2, found in leafy green vegetables, might help reduce calcium deposits in arteries and improve bones. Talk with your professional before incorporating any supplement regimen into your diet. Let’s improve our heart health by working with our physicians and attending to a healthy lifestyle. Skip the processed foods and go for lean meats and a bite of dark chocolate or berries for dessert. Before relaxing after dinner, go for a walk! Then sit down to read or watch something that makes you laugh. Breathe deeply, knowing that you’ve helped yourself avoid heart disease, and settle in for sleep. Sources for this article included: cdc.gov, ncbi.nim.nih.gov, and mayoclinic.org.

Adcock Coaching
Experienced Support for Difficult Divorces
By Deborah Daley
Tammy Adcock wakes up every day with the conviction that she is doing what she is meant to do. Since 2021, she has owned the divorce coaching firm Adcock Coaching, where she helps women navigate high-conflict divorce. The mother of three has firsthand experience in this area—she spent 12 years going through her own high-conflict divorce and custody case. Divorce is traumatie. During Tammy’s own divorce journey, she struggled to find resources that could help her understand how the family court system works. “Individuals in high-conflict divorce situations need support as they negotiate an unfamiliar maze,” she says. She is now glad to be that support for other women going through difficult divorces. Tammy, a Lincoln native, earned her undergraduate degree in communication from Doane University in Crete, Nebraska, and went on to earn a master’s degree in management. As an educator, Tammy taught business courses related to communication and professional services at Southeast Community College in Lincoln for 11 years. Tammy is the only certified high-conflict divorce coach in the state of Nebraska. “The certification is through the organization One Mom’s Battle,” Tammy shares. This organization, started by a mother enduring her own high-conflict divorce, which offers training and a national database for graduates from the high-conflict divorce coaches. Strangely, the idea of divorce coaching is relatively new. “There are all sorts of coaches—life, finance, sports,” Tammy points out. “Divorce coaching helps the abused divorce survivor navigate the family court system, which is typically a long and emotional legal process. We bring a team approach to this traumatic event in a person’s life.” The team includes an attorney to handle legal matters, a therapist to help work through issues of abuse, and Tammy, the coach. “I teach behavioral techniques and responses that include how to talk, react, respond to questions, and more during this difficult time.” Tammy opened her firm because she discovered during her own painful divorce that women often do not have resources or strategies to deal with the divorce process. According to nationwide studies, there is currently a 35–50 percent divorce rate with first marriages in the United States. The rates with second marriages are even higher. In Tammy’s experience, the courts tend to focus on the law, and resources are lacking when it comes to the personal impact of the proceedings. “No woman should be alone in this process. I continue my education by familiarizing myself with the court process and take courses to better understand the different forms of domestic abuse 24

when it comes to children,” she says. “I network in Tammy Adcock, Owner the community and know what help is available.” She is also getting certified to teach a course on trauma, which she will begin to offer this year. Tammy describes high-conflict divorce as abuse because of the power and control dynamics that go on in the process. Many of her clients come to her “in a fog,” she says, “broken down and unsure of themselves, in financial straits, worried about money and their kids. Abuse comes in many forms—financial, intellectual, social, emotional, and physical. The emotional trauma involved can be devastating and can take years from your life.” Tammy is not deterred by the often painful and emotional situations she encounters because she sees the positive impact that she can have on her clients’ lives. “I often see myself in my clients and know I have a real opportunity to make a difference,” she shares. “I relish the hugs I receive when a client tells me, ‘You have no idea what you have done for me.’” One of those clients is DJ. “Tammy has been very helpful and supportive during the constant struggles of my ongoing custody battle,” DJ says. “She has been someone to talk to when I’m frustrated and provides reassuring positivity for me. She is really a great coach. I highly recommend her.” For Tammy, this work is a mission, and she is passionate about it. “If I had not gone through my own painful divorce, I would not have found my mission in life. I have become rich in life because I am helping others navigate a traumatic situation.” Her firm is open from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. daily because Tammy also works as a corrections officer. She feels this provides more experience for her coaching work because many inmates are victims of domestic violence. To learn more, visit Adcock Coaching online at adcockcoaching.com. You can also call Tammy at 531-310-1061 or email her at info@adcockcoaching.com. If you are enduring a difficult separation, divorce, or custody battle, she wants you to know that you are not alone!

Venous Disease
Protect Your Vascular Health
By Loretta McCollum
Healthy veins are a critical component of a healthy body. Arteries pump blood away from the heart, while veins send blood back toward the heart. Weak or damaged veins can cripple the circulatory system, allowing blood to pool, which leads to swelling and the possibility of blood clots. Purple, bulging veins are not just cosmetically unappealing—they may also be life-threatening. Millions of Americans are dealing with vein issues. Fortunately, most insurance policies cover vein treatments that are deemed medically necessary. Symptoms of vein issues include painful, purple, swollen veins; leg numbness or heaviness; or an itchy or irritating leg rash. Hormone fluctuations make women more likely than men to develop vein disease. Being overweight is a risk factor, as is a family history of vein disease. Those who stand or sit for extended periods of time are also at risk. Spider veins, typically a cosmetic issue only, are named for their delicate, web-like appearance. They commonly appear on the face and legs. Although they’re not harmful in most cases, you should see a doctor if they become tender or swollen. Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins near the skin’s surface. The pooling of blood in these veins lends itself to blood clot formation. Skin ulcers may also develop near varicose veins. These ulcers are painful and often become infected. Varicose veins close to the skin may burst, causing bleeding. Such bleeding is usually minor. However, depending upon the size

of the ruptured vein, immediate medical attention may be required. A healthy lifestyle that includes a proper diet and regular exercise will go a long way to keep veins in proper working order, but you should seek medical attention if vein disease symptoms arise. Your provider may recommend an ultrasound of the leg. This non-invasive test uses sound waves to examine blood flow through the valves in the veins. There are different types of vein specialists. Vascular surgeons treat all conditions that affect blood vessels. Phlebologists specialize in examining, preventing, treating, and rehabilitating venous diseases. (A phlebologist might be a general practitioner who is also board-certified in phlebology.) Dermatologic surgeons may perform some types of laser therapy treatments that apply to venous disease. Several treatments are available, from non-invasive remedies to full removal of the problem vein. Somewhere in the middle is a procedure known as sclerotherapy, in which the vein is injected with a solution that scars and closes the vein. It’s performed in the doctor’s office, and no

Revamping Your Living Spaces Plan Your Remodel Like a Pro
By Robyn V. Powell
Is your home outdated or simply no longer meeting the needs of your family? Before placing a for sale sign in your yard, consider that remodeling your home might be a better solution. After all, if you enjoy your neighborhood, why risk buyer’s remorse? Whether your dream home includes a gourmet kitchen, a spa-inspired bathroom, or a wide open floor plan, remodeling your home can transform your existing space into a sanctuary you love coming home to. While a remodel can give you exactly the home you want— and is less expensive than a custom build—living through a remodel is not without challenges! Most homeowners don’t fully understand the process, design options, or costs involved. A successful remodeling project takes careful planning, which includes defining and prioritizing goals, accurately calculating costs and setting a budget, and hiring the best contractors and professionals. Step one is to identify which areas of your home you want to remodel. Once you have a clear road map, it’s time to check out some prices. Search online for inspirational design ideas and get a sense of costs. Go to local showrooms to see how much materials are selling for in your area. When it comes to establishing your budget, calculate costs before beginning your project, and plan to have 15 to 20 percent of your budget in reserve to cover unforeseen costs that are sure to crop up. Talk
to a range of contractors and subcontractors, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. In other words, you need to become a savvy consumer before even beginning your remodel project. One of the most important remodeling decisions is whether to hire an interior designer or an architect. An interior designer has the professional skill set required to lead any remodeling project that involves space planning and design expertise. If your remodel plans include structural changes such as an addition or removing any walls, plan to hire an architect. The tradespeople you’ll need to hire will depend on the scope of your project. For small scale remodels, a general contractor may be able to complete all the work. If you have the luxury of an entire home renovation or are planning a major remodel, your project will require the services of carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and painters. In this case, hiring a general contractor to assemble and coordinate the team is a good idea.

Cosmetic Dentistry Transform Your Smile
By Leslie Byrne
When you’re setting 2024 wellness goals, remember that taking care of yourself isn’t just about eating kale and hitting the gym. Healthy teeth are a big part of overall health, and a bright smile can bring a boost to anyone’s self-esteem. If you feel that the look of your teeth is holding you back personally or professionally, cosmetic dentistry is worth considering. Some cosmetic dentistry treatments are simple and can even be done at home. Other treatments require a visit to the cosmetic dentist to enhance the appearance of teeth and give you the confidence to share your best smile. Cosmetic dentistry is a specialized area of dental care dedicated to improving the aesthetics—that is, the look—of your smile. Unlike general dentistry, which focuses on maintaining overall oral health, cosmetic dentists specialize in enhancing the visual appeal of the patient’s teeth and gums. Common treatments include whitening, veneers, bonding, crowns, inlays or onlays, and implants. Quick and effective teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures. Options include in-office bleaching, dentist-supplied at-home products, and over-the-counter whiteners. All options will result in noticeably whiter teeth. OTC products are the least expensive, but they may take longer to produce results comparable to those of professional treatments. An important point to consider is that only natural teeth will be whitened by these treatments: tooth-colored restorations will not be affected. Dental veneers are custom-made shells composed of porcelain or resin-composite materials that are bonded to the front surface of teeth. Veneers are an excellent, natural-looking option for concealing
cracks, chips, stains, or other cosmetic imperfections. The procedure involves minimal enamel removal, making it a reversible option. Porcelain veneers may require replacement every 10 to 20 years. Dental bonding, also called composite bonding, involves applying tooth-colored material to improve the shape, size, or color of teeth. This is a versatile option and works well to solve problems like chips or gaps between teeth. The procedure is minimally invasive, cost-effective, and can be completed in just one office visit, making it a popular choice for many seeking a quick smile transformation. Dental bonding requires even less enamel removal than veneers, making it a reversible option that may need touch-ups every three to 10 years. Dental crowns can be a nice-looking, durable solution for weak, broken, or decayed teeth. Crowns require some enamel removal, but they fit over the entire tooth to provide strength, protection, and good looks. Inlays have been a long-standing alternative to fillings for minor

Trip of a Lifetime Cruise to Antarctica
By Jackie Williams
Whenever someone mentions visiting Antarctica, you hear over and over,“That’s the trip of a lifetime.”And yet, I am sure you can count on one hand how many people you personally know who have gone to the White Continent. Why is that? Perhaps what you believe about traveling to Antarctica doesn’t quite match the reality of what’s available. Let me give you some interesting details that might just vault this trip onto your list.
Travel to Antarctica is heavily regulated, but not by any particular nation. The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) regulates travel there to ensure minimal impact on the environment. They do not want to spoil the land! One of the key tactics for this is strictly limiting how many ships can land and how many people can get off per day. (This is what causes the costs of the various cruises to go way up.) Basically, a ship carrying more than 500 passengers cannot make landings in Antarctica. IAATO specifies that tour operators have to coordinate their schedules “so that no more than one vessel visits a landing site at any one time, permitting no more than 100 passengers ashore at one time, with a guide-to-passenger ratio of no more than 1:20.” If you are lucky enough to set foot on the continent, someone will likely check your clothes inside and out on your way off the boat and again when you re-board to make sure you have not introduced anything foreign and have not taken anything as a souvenir. They are not kidding around about keeping it clean and pristine! If your Antarctic cruise has more than 500 passengers, it will merely be sailing by for viewings…which is still spectacular. Picture several pods of whales right next to the boat, icebergs and glaciers towering next to you, and penguins, seals, and seabirds living in their natural habitat. Nearly all visitors to Antarctica arrive by sea from Chile or Argentina. Sailing to “the end of the world” takes upwards of 48 hours through the Drake Passage. These deep waters connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and there is no land mass to break up the powerful waves. You’re not in danger— the captains are very experienced and, with today’s technology and navigational tools, they can foresee the conditions before they set sail. If it’s not safe, they won’t sail. Make sure you pack your seasick meds, as the Drake Passage can either be “Drake Lake” or “Drake Shake.” How awesome would it be to witness 30-plus foot waves smashing against the ship? If you are not looking for that type of excitement and exhilaration, you might take advantage of the option to fly from 38
February 2024
South America to the northern part of the Antarctic Peninsula and then hop on your ship (if your pocketbook can handle it). You can book one of Silversea’s luxury Antarctica Bridge cruises, where you take a comfortable two-hour flight instead of sailing the Drake Passage. Viking Cruises go to Antarctica on their smaller Expedition ships, which carry only around 200 guests. To see what that’s like, watch Viking’s expedition video Tor’s Travels. Their chairman, Tor Hagen, shares his experience going to Antarctica on board the Viking Polaris, and it is very inspiring. I got a little teary-eyed at the end. Though it is known as the coldest place on the planet, Antarctica can actually be above freezing and pleasant during its summer months. Travel is only allowed in the summer, which runs from November to March, and you will experience the sun 24 hours a day. The local wildlife will be active on those long days! Whale calves will accompany their mothers, female seals will be taking care of their pups, and penguins will have laid their eggs. (By the way, there are no polar bears in Antarctica—they are in the Arctic.) I recommend you choose an itinerary that includes the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. This is where you can get up close to five species of penguins and see over a million seals! These islands are where people take photos with the penguins and seals right next to them. What an amazing experience that would be! If you tend to get seasick or have a tighter budget to consider, book an Antarctic cruise on a large ship. The larger the ship, the smoother the ride. If you want to get off the ship to walk on glaciers, kayak, and take part in citizen science, book a smaller Expedition cruise. Antarctica is the ultimate pristine adventure. There is nowhere like it! Sources for this article included: silversea.com, iaato.org, viking. tv, and antarcticaguide.com.

Annoying, Insistent Tinnitus Treatment Can Help!
By Linda Barnes
Anyone in the 15–25 percent of people who experience tinnitus knows how annoying a ringing or buzzing in the ear can be. For some people, the insistent sound can have more debilitating complications. Though there is no current cure for this condition, we have a variety of options to reduce the symptoms. Tinnitus refers to ringing or noises in one or both ears. It is more common in older adults but can occur at any age. Though ringing is most common, the sounds might also be described as pulsing, humming, clicking, buzzing, or hissing. The sounds may be constant. Conversely, they may be intermittent or only noticed at certain times. My annoying tinnitus is mild. Though it is constant, I rarely notice it until bedtime, when all is quiet. In more severe cases, the sounds may cause problems with sleep or concentration and can lead to anxiety, depression, fatigue, or headache. Sometimes, the cause can be identified; in other instances, the origin is elusive. Risk factors include exposure to loud noises, operating heavy equipment or chain saws, working in a factory or with firearms, and listening to very loud music. Advanced age is a factor, as older people have fewer functioning nerve fibers and these fibers can be further damaged by loud noises. Gender is also a factor— men experience tinnitus more than women. Use of alcohol or tobacco are risk factors for developing tinnitus. Obesity, high
blood pressure, head injury, or arthritis can also increase risk. Many of these risk factors can be managed. Damage from loud noises can be minimized by using ear protection. When we’re listening to music in the car or wearing ear buds, we can choose to turn down the volume. I love being in the stadium to cheer on my local football team, so I wear ear plugs. I am happy to see young children wearing hearing protection earmuffs there. Health professionals such as physicians, hearing specialists, or audiologists are typically involved in diagnosing and treating tinnitus. They will likely want to do a hearing exam, possibly a CT or MRI, or lab tests. The latter can identify possible factors such as anemia, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid issues, or anemia. Treating an underlying condition can sometimes reduce the severity of tinnitus. Removing a buildup of earwax might help, as will hearing aids if there is hearing loss. If you have high blood pressure, lifestyle changes or medication may decrease those bothersome noises. Medications can also cause tinnitus. Certain drugs such as antidepressants, antibiotics, NSAIDS (like ibuprofen or aspirin),

Cuddly Critters
Pet Rabbits
A Hopping Good Time in a Small Space
By Jackie Byers
After dogs and cats, rabbits are the third most popular pet in the United States, and for good reason. People who live in crowded urban areas still want to have cute, cuddly pets, but they don’t have a large yard for outdoor play or even a park close enough for daily outings. Rabbits fit the bill!
You may be surprised to learn that rabbits are as trainable as dogs but can also be litter-trained like cats. They draw no noise complaints from neighbors. They love to be cuddled, petted, and groomed, but be gentle! A rabbit’s bones are delicate, especially the spine, so picking them up roughly is likely to injure them. Handle with care. Spaying or neutering is essential to keeping your bunny happy and healthy. For females, this procedure is usually done at six months. For males, is can be done much earlier—at two or three months of age. After this procedure, your bunny will need vaccinations. Your pet’s veterinarian will explain the four vaccines needed for domestic rabbits. The most dire disease, myxomatosis, is carried by mosquitoes, biting flies, and fleas. This disease is serious, debilitating, and often fatal. The same is true of hemorrhagic disease in rabbits. There is no known cure, and it is highly contagious to other rabbits. It, too, is most often fatal after a debilitating illness. Luckily, vaccinations are available. Rabbits come in small, medium, and large sizes, but the average weight of a domestic rabbit is around six pounds. Several smaller breeds include the “lops.” These are bunnies whose ears fall forward instead of standing erect. They come in all sizes. The smallest is a teacup-sized rabbit called the American Fuzzy Lop. The largest breed of rabbit is the Flemish Giant, weighing 12 to 15 pounds. This breed is known for being friendly and docile. They make good pets, as do many of the other breeds of rabbit. They seem to enjoy the attentions of their owners. Because of their particularly delicate bones, they should not be picked up. Smaller rabbits include the super toy, toy, and teddy. These are designer rabbits not considered separate breeds by the American Rabbit Breeders Association. (Different councils prevail in Europe.) You will know your rabbit is happy when it “binks.” A bunny bink is a leap into the air with a slight contortion of the body. Not all bunnies bink, but if yours does, that is a sure sign that you are doing things right. As with puppies, it’s possible to purchase a young rabbit from a reputable breeder, but it’s best to check with animal rescues and your local humane society first to see if they have any rabbits available for adoption. When it comes to equipment for your new pet, you’ll need to visit a local pet store. Your pet rabbit needs his own home, called a hutch. This enclosure should be at least four feet on each side and high enough for your pet to stand on its hind legs without its ears touching the top. Your bunny should not need to leave the hutch for room to hop around. The hutch should include a hiding place, a litter box, a water bowl, and a pellet 42
February 2024
dish. About half the floor should be covered in Timothy hay (also called Timothy grass). Rabbits need to chew. Their teeth are always growing; continual chewing is how they keep them at an appropriate length. Always have fresh hay available for your pet in the hutch. The right chew toys are also necessary. Great choices include woven willow balls, small branches from pine or apple trees, or even cardboard. (Make sure the cardboard has no colored ink, which in many cases is toxic to ingest.) Rabbits, like dogs, are readily trainable. With any animal, patience and kindness are essential. The only thing you teach an animal with abuse is to fear you and avoid you. Rabbit agility training courses may be offered locally; check with your vet or the organization where you adopted your pet. They can also point you to online training resources. The best way to keep your rabbit healthy is to keep it indoors. It can enjoy time outside its hutch only under direct supervision—after all, rabbits were born to chew, and your home is filled with items that shouldn’t be gnawed. If your rabbit suddenly stops eating, call the vet right away. Do not wait for more signs of distress. Play with your bunny gently; groom it weekly; and keep its hutch and litter box clean. Pet rabbits tend to live about 10 years, and you have the power to make it a great decade! Sources for this article included: pethelpful.com, spca.bc/ca, rabbitpedia.com, and rabbit.org.

Wall Street Fads
From the Nifty Fifty to the Magnificent Seven
By George Morgan
Americans love fads, and Wall Street loves Americans who love fads. When it is a “must-have” item, people tend to forget to ask,“How much?”The problem with fads is that they end even faster than they begin.
Back in the day, when I was a young buck of a broker, the investment fad du jour was a group of stocks called the Nifty Fifty. (Today, we refer to them as “blue chips.”) They were a gaggle of companies that were guaranteed to be longterm home runs. The list included such names as General Electric, IBM, 3M, Disney, Walmart, and Xerox. It also included some names that have since passed into the corporate graveyard, like Sears, Schlitz, Polaroid, S.S. Kresge, and Simplicity Pattern. During the 1980s, in order to be one of the pretty people, you had to own the Nifty Fifty. This included the Oracle of Omaha. At every Berkshire meeting, Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger would pound the table and say, “We own them and our holding period is forever.” (The only one Berkshire has left is Coke.) During the Nifty Fifty fad, Jack Bogle introduced the first index fund to the investing public. Upon close examination, you will find that a portfolio of the Nifty Fifty mirrors the composition and performance of Bogle’s index fund, with two major differences. First, the Nifty Fifty portfolio was more expensive to create and maintain. Secondly, brokers can’t make a living selling index funds. With any fad, there are always some people dying to rain on the parade. While many investors were lapping up the Nifty Fifty, a cadre of Wall Street traditionalists and academics pooh-poohed the fad, saying the stocks in the Nifty Fifty were overpriced and bound to crash. A decade later, the bloom fell off the rose…after some brokers had made a ton of money pushing the Nifty Fifty and individual investors had pocketed a few shekels buying them. According to Jim Cramer and his CNBC acolytes, the current investment fad du jour is the Magnificent Seven. They are Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Nvidia, Tesla, and Meta Platforms (that is, Facebook). All are high-growth tech stocks on the cutting edge of the AI boom. So far this year, the S&P is up nearly 20 percent. Without the Magnificent Seven, it would be up only in the mid single digits. As always, there is a group of naysayers shouting in the background. The Wall Street Journal has opined that the Magnificent Seven are overpriced and about to go belly up, leaving investors hold a flaming bag of dog droppings. Academics are putting forth research that claims to prove that small cap stocks are the place to be. Their theory contends that markets undervalue companies that are less well known and get less attention from brokers. Side note: Over the past two years, the Russell 2000, the broadest small cap index, has
declined 22 percent. There is an element of truth to the WSJ position, but their opinion needs some clarification so individual investors can best evaluate where they stand and what action (if any) to take. First, keep in mind that most individual investors don’t own individual stocks. Collectively, they own $12 trillion worth of index funds. The Magnificent Seven are not the only stocks they own, and a hit to even a big stock won’t take down an entire index fund. Secondly, the opinion ignores how market indexes are constructed and how index funds work. The S&P 500 is weighted by market cap, which means the largest stocks in the index have a greater impact on the performance of the fund. The Magnificent Seven are in the S&P, and their combined weight constitutes 23 percent of the market’s movement. Thus, the WSJ is correct in saying that if or when the Magnificent Seven take a big hit, so will the market. However, the WSJ is missing a significant point here: The less valuable a particular stock gets, the less impact it has on a market-cap weighted fund. If the Magnificent Seven take a hit, their index leadership will be replaced by the next generation of stocks on their way up. The S&P periodically adjusts its holdings to reflect such changes; we just don’t know exactly when that occurs. Mr. Market doesn’t always care what the Wall Street analysts and academic geeks think. Neither do the millions of individual investors who own trillions of dollars of cost-effective index funds. But in today’s vast and eclectic market, there is something suited to every investment temperament. Begin by determining what you want your investments to accomplish. Fads are not for everyone. I never owned a pet rock.

Themed Gardens Are Here to Stay! How to Choose Your Theme
By Linda Sutherland
It’s February, and it seems as if winter will never be over, but spring is already on its way. If you have not yet planned out your gardens for the spring, now is the time. I would like to present to you the idea of themed gardens.Yes, it seems that almost everything has a theme these days, so why not gardens? Let’s see if we can inspire you with some great ideas. The first garden theme I suggest is a taco and salsa garden. We use salsa on so many things at my house…. why not grow all the ingredients myself and make my own? If you choose this garden theme, you’ll need to start with tomatoes—for salsa, Roma tomatoes work best. A nifty plan, if you don’t have much room, is to start them on a trellis so they can grow straight up. Of course, you will need plenty of peppers. I recommend Anaheim, banana, jalapeño, and (if you like it hot), serrano. You will need several garlic and onion plants, as well. If you and your family enjoy cilantro, you’ll need a couple of cilantro plants, too. Once harvesting begins, you’ll have all the ingredients to make your own delicious salsa. How about a pizza garden? Yes, please! You will still need Roma tomatoes to start. If you haven’t already planted onion and garlic in your salsa garden, you’ll need space for them

here. For herbs, you’ll probably want basil, Italian parsley, rosemary, and Italian oregano. You can use these wonderful ingredients to make sauce for pizza, spaghetti, lasagna, and more. Imagine how delicious these sauces will be coming straight from your garden to your table! Your family and friends will certainly be impressed. You can always freeze extra sauce for your own use in the dead of winter or to hand out as holiday gifts. Asian cuisine is a staple at my house. I love the idea of going out to the garden and picking produce for a stir-fry. For this theme, I would definitely grow snap peas (put them on a trellis), Thai basil, Asian red kale, coriander, and some leafy lettuces, including green kale. This will be a very colorful garden and will add some real visual appeal to your garden areas. What about an herbal tea garden? I could see this being
1/10/23 2:52 PM
a really charming little area. After all, you will have put a lot of work into these gardens, and you deserve to sit back and relax with a comforting cup of tea. Consider growing lavender, lemon balm, chamomile, and mint to get you started. You can use your herbs fresh or dry them to use at a later date. This themed garden will smell like a dream! A themed garden doesn’t have to be a kitchen garden—you can also have a themed flower garden. One theme that I am going to try this year is a single-color flower garden. I’m doing all white flowers because I think they look spectacular, but you can choose any color you’d like. Some gardeners take the single-color theme a step further and create a moon garden. While it includes white flowers with blooms and leaves that shine in the moonlight, it also includes plants whose scents become richer in the evening. Consider the ever-popular moonflower, night-blooming jasmine, lilies, hydrangeas, and roses, just to name a few. A moon garden can present an absolutely stunning aesthetic for both the eyes and the nose. No garden area is complete without a butterfly garden! Of course, you want to plant species that attract butterflies, but it’s smart to find out how many different types of butterflies are home to your area so you can plan your garden design to attract a diverse group of butterflies. Native plants are always a good bet for attracting native pollinators. Last, but certainly not least, you could plant a sunflower garden if you have the room. There are so many species of sunflowers available now that you can mix tall varieties with shorter ones and traditional colors with untraditional colors like pink and purple. The possibilities are endless! I know a gardener who tried to grow a “sunflower fort” (have you googled it?) with her daughter. It didn’t meet their expectations, but she’ll tweak her process and try again this summer. That’s what gardening is all about! A nice outcome of planting themed gardens is that it’s a very good way to get household members interested in gardening. These are just suggestions to get you started. Don’t be afraid to get creative and see what works for you and your family. The sky is the limit!

Cake Expressions
Love is the Active Ingredient
By Linda Sutherland
Do you need a distinctive cake or dessert to wow your guests at an upcoming special occasion? If you want a showstopper that is truly out of the ordinary, turn to Cake Expressions. Owner Debbie Kohlscheen is a delightful woman who is full of energy and whimsy…both of which are reflected in her many baked creations.
Debbie’s interest in baking began with her grandmother and an Easy Bake Oven. Once her grandmother saw that Debbie was ready, she let Debbie start baking with a real oven. Debbie dabbled in baking as an adult by making birthday cakes for family and friends. Even though she worked in the medical profession for more than 30 years, she always kept baking. Eventually she took the leap and started her own business. She is in her new location in Bellevue, and her business is booming. She loves nothing more than to sit down with a client to find out what they have in mind for that

She takes great joy in making people happy, and it is with keen pleasure that she sees so many repeat customers. Debbie and her husband strive to make every occasion a great experience. They also have a catering business that keeps them very busy. “We get a great deal of satisfaction out of what we do,”

Debbie says. During the pandemic, they got involved with a non-profit organization called Icing Smiles. “This organization provides custom cookies and cakes to families impacted by major medical issues with their children,” she explains. “The concept is similar to the Make-A-Wish Foundation—but with cookies! This group relies on volunteers from all over. Many companies sent sugar, flour, butter, and vanilla to participating bakeries, and we were one of them. We and other bakeries have been able to send out thousands of cookies to families all over the country.” Talk about spreading joy! On the baking side of the catering business, Cake Expressions specializes in wedding, birthday, and special occasion cakes. Being family owned and operated gives Debbie and her staff an abundance of opportunity to show their amazing creativity and designs. Their cakes are so full of originality! (Their online cake galleries have some outstanding examples.) Debbie takes pride in working with her clients to capture exactly the vision they have described for that special cake. She loves seeing how pleased they are with the creative results. I am not exaggerating when I say that her cakes are works of art. They are incredible! When asked what advice she would give to someone wanting to start their own business, Debbie doesn’t hesitate in her reply. “Do a great deal of research before starting out, and talk to people who are in the business you are considering,” she says. “By all means, know your market and know the people in that market! When you’re ready to start, start out very small.” Debbie was encouraged to work hard and succeed by her
grandmother, of course, but also by female friends who had started their own businesses. “If you believe in yourself, you will receive positive feedback. And bring your patience! All good things take time, but the rewards are worth all the effort and work you bring to the table.” Debbie also reminds us that a successful business owner must always treat people with respect and kindness. This mindset of kindness is reflected in everything that Debbie does, including taking in rescue animals over the years… mostly dogs, but also a cockatoo! She loves animals and knows how many are in need of rehoming. Right now she has two beloved German shepherds. Debbie also has a delightful sense of humor. (How could a person without a great sense of humor design all those whimsical cakes?) During the pandemic, she and her team created toilet paper cakes to bring a little levity during a stressful time. It caught the attention of Channel 7 broadcaster Julie Cornell, who did a story on Cake Expressions and their toilet paper cakes. We can all remember how much we needed a good chuckle during pandemic isolation, and I recall that these cakes did the trick! No matter what special event you have coming up— wedding, birthday, anniversary, baby shower, office party, or just a festive gathering—Cake Expressions can create the perfect cake to impress and entertain your guests. Give Debbie and her team a call at 402-933-4158 or stop by the bakery at 3503 Samson Way, in Bellevue. For more information on cake and icing flavors, check out the menu at cakeexpressionsinc. com. Let Debbie show you what’s possible!
A Few Words From One Of Our Advertisers: “I began advertising with Women’s Edition starting with the November 2019 issue and I have been thrilled with the results! I’ve had numerous new clients come to the gallery because they saw my ads in Women’s Edition, even as I’ve been working by appointment in recent months due to the pandemic. Most had never been to downtown Ralston, where I’m located, so introducing them to our town and what we have to offer has been another benefit! The advertising has resulted not only in sales, but also in new followers on my social media platforms and new newsletter subscribers. During a time of great fear, Japanese Americans were discriminated against during World War II. However, not all states shared these feelings. In partnership with the Legacy of the Plains Museum in Gering, the Nebraska History Museum is pleased to present “Preserving a Legacy: Japanese in Nebraska” to expand on the story told by the traveling Smithsonian exhibition “Righting a Wrong.” The story of Japanese Americans in Nebraska is filled with hope and support in the state. Nebraskans of Japanese ancestry have led the way in righting the wrongs of the 1940s. This exhibit strives to tell these stories. Visit history.nebraska.gov.

Hello, Self
The Importance of Positive Self-Talk
Good morning, self. Today is another fantastic day. I am going to smile, grow, and be the happy being that I know I am. I am going to relish the joy of meeting those on my path who will bring me happiness, and I will instinctively know how to help others discover their joy. I am a person who is loving and kind. I am centered and in the now with all of my interactions today. I am so very grateful for all that I am and all that I have in my life. I am so very blessed. I am excited about the day before me. I can’t wait to see what my day brings. I will turn negative into positive. My cup will be overflowing instead of being empty. How does that feel? “Be mindful of your self-talk. It’s a conversation with the Universe.” —David James
When I wrote the self-talk you just read above, I realized how very different that paragraph is from the morning talks I’ve been having with myself lately. I had forgotten how important it is to be centered and happy as I start my day. Perhaps it was the responsibilities of the recent holidays that caused the bump in my road. Perhaps I stopped listening to my inner voice of joy. Perhaps I simply made a great mistake. “Bring acceptance and compassionate self-talk. Say nice things to yourself—you’re the only one listening. Tell yourself, ‘I am doing the best I can.’” —Gabrielle Bernstein
By Janet Van deWalle
Starting your day with a private, mindful pep talk of joy is magical. When we remember to do this, we discover that we have a skip in our step and a smile on our face. According to science, what we’ve done here is trigger endorphins in our body, which makes us feel good. “Brain wave tests prove that when we use positive words, our ‘feel good’ hormones flow. Positive self-talk releases endorphins and serotonin in our brain, which then flow throughout our body, making us feel good. These neurotransmitters stop flowing when we use negative words.” —Ruth Fishel
I had also been forgetting to revisit this positive self-talk with myself throughout the day. When we do this, we are refilling our psychic gas tank—it runs low as the day wears on. Positivity fuels us. How do I close my day? Good night, self. Thank you so much for my amazing day that has just passed. Thank you for the smiles and the heart-warming manifestations that came my way. Thank you for my life. “Be very careful what you say to yourself because someone very important is listening…you!” —John Assaraf

Family MVPs
By Marge Shoemaker
They Matter! They Have Value! They Have Promise!
What does MVP mean to you? Many of us would reply Most Valuable Player or Most Valuable Person. I think all families, large or small, have MVPs because we all Matter, have Value, and have Promise. Take my extended family, for instance. Dad had two sisters. I don’t know the family dynamic when they were young, but I know his sisters Mattered to him. He made sure we knew them and their families even though we were spread out. My grandparents and Aunt Dorothy lived in California; Aunt Alice lived in Minnesota. Dad’s job had us moving from Nebraska to the Pacific Northwest and many points between. Mom was the fourth of 10 children. Her family was also spread out. Grandpa and Grandma, Aunt Lucille, Aunt Marguerite, and Uncle Carl lived in the same town in South Dakota; Aunt Mary and Uncle Wilfred lived in other areas of South Dakota. Aunt Bert lived in California, Uncle Lawrence and Aunt Dorothy (yes, there are two Aunt Dorothys) lived in Minnesota, and Uncle Jim lived in Nebraska. Both of my parents were family oriented. Even though the families were separated by great distances, we visited as often as possible and members from both families were always included. We kids got to know Mom’s family better because so many of them lived in the Midwest. Any trip we made “home” to see Grandpa and Grandma included side trips or stops in to visit any extended family living nearby. Trips to California to
Sedona.indd 1
visit my dad’s parents also included extended family. Mom and Dad taught us that everyone in the family Matters. Our aunts and uncles (the Elders) presented a variety of lifestyles, jobs, and careers. They were teachers, judges, farmers, secretaries, salesmen, business owners, tradesmen, homemakers, clerks, and a priest. No matter their status, they had Value…they added to society by helping the family get through the Great Depression and two World Wars. They all were assets to the family. The offspring of these family members…the Cousins…are more diverse than their parents. Some have advanced degrees; others graduated only from high school. The Cousins include artists, engineers, nurses, real estate agents, teachers, medical professionals, adventurers, business owners, entrepreneurs, and homemakers. All are successful in their own way. They saw their Promise in their parents’ accomplishments. Their children show the same Promise. Every family has MVPs! I think what Matters most, has the most Value, and shows the most Promise is the Love shared with an extended family. The Elders are gone. The Cousins are left to carry on. What about your family? They Matter because they’re family…a part of your story. They have Value because of the knowledge and wisdom they add to the family. They show Promise, even though they may just be starting out. Don’t forget to let them know they are Loved!

Vehicle Insurance Everybody Needs It!
By Linda Sutherland
Confused by vehicle insurance coverage? You’re not alone. How can we figure out what we need, how to find the best policy, and how much it has to cost? My first suggestion is to shop around for vehicle insurance. When you shop around, you can ask questions about state requirements, what the policy covers, and what would cause your premium to increase. If you don’t have the time or energy for shopping around, hire an independent insurance agent to do it for you.
An important question about insurance is: Do I have enough coverage? Regulations vary by state, but there are coverages that all drivers must have. Liability insurance covers damage you may cause to other people or their property while you are driving your vehicle. To legally register and drive your vehicle, you need to maintain your state’s minimum level of liability insurance. Other common types of insurance include collision and comprehensive. Collision insurance pays for damage your vehicle sustains in an accident. Comprehensive insurance protects your vehicle from non-accident damage, like from natural disaster or theft. To protect yourself from people who are (illegally) driving without insurance, you may want to consider uninsured motorist coverage. This coverage will pay for medical bills and car repairs with no worries. You may have heard of “no-fault” insurance, also known as personal injury protection (PIP). This type of insurance covers medical expenses incurred in an accident, regardless of who is at fault. “Full coverage” is a car insurance policy that includes both comprehensive and collision insurance along with your particular state’s minimum liability requirements. To get started on an insurance quote, you will need to provide your personal information as well as information about your vehicle, such as mileage, date of purchase, and VIN number. You also need to provide your driving history, including violations and tickets over the last five years and any completed driving courses. Another important question about insurance is: Am I getting all the discounts I can possibly get? This could include multi-car discounts, safe driver discounts, low-mileage discounts, senior citizen discounts, and good student discounts. There are many things you can do to make yourself eligible for discounts. First of all, maintain a good driving record—that’s always worth some money on an insurance policy. You can also demonstrate your commitment to driving safety by signing up for a safe driving program or taking an accident prevention course. Improving your credit score, though not directly related to driving, is another way to potentially qualify for a discount on insurance. It is imperative that you know what your financial responsibilities will be so you can plan ahead. Know how 52
February 2024
much your annual deductible is and how much you’ll pay in monthly premiums. Once you have insurance that you are satisfied with, check every year to see if you qualify for any new discounts. Always ask! Teen drivers are expensive to insure, and that’s no surprise. Their lack of experience behind the wheel means they’re more likely to make an error that leads to an accident (or the failure to avoid one). Some companies will let you list a teen with a learner’s permit on your policy until they become fully licensed. At that point, insurers may offer discounts for teens who complete a drivers education course or even for those who get good grades. After all, if they’re responsible in the classroom, they’re likely to be responsible on the road! Recreational vehicles (RVs) and motorcycles need to be insured in the same manner as your regular vehicle. Talk to your insurance agent about all your vehicles—there’s often a bundling discount for insuring multiple vehicles on the same policy. In some states, insurance for snowmobiles and ATVs is not required by law if you drive them only on your own property. Be sure to check! Some states don’t require insurance for boats and jet skis, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have it. Accidents happen, and you’ll still be liable for property damage and bodily injury. Insurance is based on the replacement cost of the vehicle, so a used car is usually cheaper to insure than a new one (unless it’s a classic car). If you drive a car that is still being paid for, you might want to consider guaranteed auto protection insurance. This means the insurance company will pay for the dollar amount of the “gap” between the balance of financing and what your vehicle is actually worth at the time of an accident. Insurance pays—for our liabilities, our injuries, our property, and our peace of mind. Talk to your independent agent or have your questions prepared when you shop around! Change Matters
Emotional Intelligence Survive and Thrive!
By Janette Calabro
Emotional intelligence is widely discussed lately, but it’s nothing new. In fact, it’s always been a part of human biology that is vital for our well-being. Our messy lives are often ruled by chemicals that our minds and bodies create. Understanding and experiencing our emotions—even the ones we perceive as negative—helps us build better relationships, reduce stress, and enhance life. What exactly do we mean by “emotional intelligence”? As described by the non-profit Mental Health America, emotional intelligence is “the ability to both manage your own emotions and understand the emotions of people around you.” Basic emotions include joy, sadness, fear, disgust, surprise, anticipation, anger, and trust. Some psychology professionals interpret emotions differently or expand deeper into connected emotions. For example, joy may fall somewhere between serenity and ecstasy. That can be a lot to understand about yourself, much less about other people! The brain is a complex organ that controls, well, everything, including thought, memory, and basically every process that regulates the body and keeps it working. The brain doubles in size during the first year of life. This mighty organ comes to weigh about three pounds, and it is composed of 73 percent water. This explains why headache is such a common symptom of dehydration—you are literally drying out your brain. That should motivate you to drink enough water every day! Your brain also needs a constant supply of oxygen. Advances in brain imaging have revealed many things about our brains and how they work. For example, an introvert’s brain looks measurably different from an extrovert’s brain. The dopamine network is more active in the brain of an extrovert…and an introvert’s brain imaging shows more of the gray matter used for processing information. Here’s a fact you may not know—information travels to and from your brain at about 250 miles per hour. (To put that in perspective, race car drivers have maxed out around 240 miles per hour.) Another curious fact is that not a single one of your billions of brain cells can feel pain. For example, if you’re eating ice cream and experience brain freeze, the pain actually originates from the roof of your mouth. (Pro tip: Holding your tongue to the roof of your mouth during a brain freeze heats up your palate and eases your suffering!) Emotions are not generated in a single area of the brain but through many different networks woven together. Other parts of the brain then generate a response. All emotions, negative and positive and everywhere in between, are essential parts of mental health. We’re never too young or too old to learn how to feel our emotions instead of pushing them away. How do we cultivate a balance of emotions? Emotions enable us to pay attention, focus, and take action. Start by paying attention to how you feel, and to
the way you behave, in certain situations. Examine why you believe what you do. Is there something from your childhood or a personal experience that has shaped your thoughts and feelings? Take responsibility for how you feel, but take it easy on yourself. Take time to acknowledge the negative as well as celebrate the positive. Don’t forget to breathe (some feelings are uncomfortable!). It is a lifelong process to discover and understand your feelings and those of the people you love. Sometimes, we experience lopsided or outsized emotions. It’s important to remember that this happens to all of us. Key skills to help balance out lopsided emotions include self-awareness, self-control, motivation, adaptability, empathy, social skills, and a positive outlook. If life hits you with heavy stuff, remember to strike a balance between sleep and activity. Practice gratitude—it really works. If you struggle to feel grateful during difficult times, start by identifying things that are simply good, like a food that tastes delicious or a book you enjoyed reading. Stay connected with friends and family. A supportive network is key to maintaining emotional balance. Spend time in nature, breathe deeply, take time to pause and reflect. If your emotions feel overwhelming, reach out to a professional. A therapist is not simply someone to talk to—therapists are trained professionals who can teach you valuable skills to help you manage your emotions. It’s said that your reaction to adversity, not the event itself, determines your life story. Mindset is everything, but we’re not born with the self-control and self-awareness we need to handle the full range of human emotion. These are skills that we need to develop on our path to emotional intelligence. You never know where someone else is on their emotional journey, so remember to be kind to yourself and others! Many of the best things in life happen unexpectedly, and that has certainly been the case for Jill Abrahamson, Attorney-at-Law and Partner at Abrahamson Law. Her career adventures have taken her from San Francisco to New York City, from Nepal back to Omaha. Each experience along the way became a stepping stone to her current position at her family’s law firm.
Jill, an Omaha native, went to Central High School and graduated from the University of Nebraska–Omaha. “I did not take my studies too seriously,” she recalls. “I was an avid reader, so when I was forced to declare a major in college, I picked literature.” After earning her degree, she attended an event for her grandfather, who was a survivor of the Holocaust. She shared with a family member that she was going through a transitional period after college and didn’t know what to do next. Her relative said she had a studio in San Francisco and suggested Jill go there. Jill
took a leap of faith and went west. Hugh I and Jill M Abrahamson, Attorneys Following the move, she interviewed for jobs with some well-known magazines, thinking she might become a journalist. She ended up waiting tables. Then her beloved grandfather passed away and she knew it was time to figure out how to take care of herself without a family safety net of financial support. “My dad was a lawyer, so I decided to take the

LSAT,” she says. “I did very well and began my life’s work.” She attended Golden Gate University School of Law and was able to get several impactful internships in San Francisco because of the school’s local reputation and connections. In San Francisco, her work in the field was varied—she worked in both civil and criminal litigation and gained experience in both state and federal courts. When she moved to New York City, she worked as a court-appointed criminal defense attorney with the Legal Aid Society in the borough of Manhattan. She also negotiated contracts for musicians and represented union members on employment matters. Just before moving back to Omaha, she volunteered with two non-profit organizations in Nepal, representing the rights of women and children. This experience cemented her commitment to women’s legal rights, and she brought that conviction to her father’s firm, which she joined in 2013. “Family has been a recurring theme in my life,” Jill says. “After going through my own painful divorce, I knew that all my experiences from all sides of the law had led me back home to family—both figuratively and literally. I had learned to appreciate and listen to peoples’ stories, how to see the human focus in these issues, and how to hold my clients’ hands while they navigated through what was often an emotional and challenging time in their lives. Family law is where I was meant to be.” Abrahamson Law provides services in many areas of family law, including divorce, child support, child custody, legal separation, name changes, and more. The firm also offers various other services, such as criminal defense services, defense
in juvenile court, and personal injury. “My father started this law office in 1986. I think the secret to his success and what sets us apart from other firms is the relationships we have with our clients. We are their advocates,” Jill asserts. “When you go to a lawyer, you have a problem, and there are always emotions involved. Our clients tell us they feel heard here. We listen to them, offer our consultation, and validate entitlement to their own feelings.” The work is challenging and all-encompassing, Jill says, but the rewards are well worth the effort. “Just a few weeks ago, I was fortunate to get a presumption of paternity set aside for a young mother. She was ecstatic.” The practice is busy and much appreciated by their satisfied clients. One such client is Diane from Omaha. “Jill, I wanted to reach out and personally thank you for all you did to assist me with my son’s child support matter,” Diane writes. “You were a pleasure to work with. I so appreciated how up front you were regarding cost and how details would move towards a resolution, as well as being a truly genuine and compassionate individual. I would not hesitate to use your firm in the future should the need arise.” If you are in need of family law services, don’t face your problems alone. Spring Landscaping
Bring Beauty to the Neighborhood
By Charlene Pierce
As spring’s gentle warmth begins to thaw the winter chill, it’s the perfect time to reimagine and revitalize your outdoor spaces. Imagine an outdoor oasis that feels like a vacation in your backyard while adding value to your home. A landscape architect or designer can transform your yard and make that dream come true. Though often perceived as interchangeable, landscape architects and landscape designers bring distinct skills and specializations to the table. Landscape architects typically work on larger projects. Their experience is backed by a formal degree, and they focus on design. While a degree is not a prerequisite for a career in landscape design, these professionals have in-depth knowledge of plants. Their artistic vision and horticultural skills are indispensable when creating personalized garden spaces. Either type of landscape professional will provide expertise in tackling unforeseen issues, from soil inconsistencies to unexpected weather patterns, helping to keep your project on track in terms of time and budget. Perhaps most importantly, they relieve you of the stress and time involved in managing the project so you can enjoy the creative process. The first step in any landscaping project is understanding how you want to use your yard. Does your family dream of a vibrant flower garden, a play area for children, or perhaps a serene nook for reading? Take a moment to stroll over your lawn, noting what you admire and what falls short of your expectations. Are there patches that are stubbornly dry or annoyingly marshy? Perhaps some corners seem underutilized. These areas are ripe for transformation. Another aspect to consider is the view from inside and outside your home. Those windows that frame your daily views are like living paintings; what do you wish to see through them? When you are in your yard, what do you see? Incorporating privacy features like strategic bushes or decorative screens can create a secluded space. The impact of enhancing curb appeal on property value is well-documented. Studies have shown that a well-maintained landscape can increase a home’s value by as much as 7 percent. The American Society of Landscape Architects reveals that professional landscaping can add 15–20 percent to a home’s value. This significant increase stems from landscaping creating functional, beautiful outdoor spaces that expand the usable area of the property. It’s like adding an extra room to your home, but one that integrates with nature. Thoughtfully placed lighting can enhance the visual appeal of your home at night and serve as a safety feature. Well-lit walkways provide secure footing after dusk, and illuminated features like water fountains or sculptures add a magical touch to the evening ambiance. To secure the right contractor for your project, get 56

multiple bids; three are ideal. When examining these bids, look beyond the bottom-line cost. Consider the proposed timelines and the types of materials to be used. These factors are indicative of the quality and longevity of the work. A lower bid might be appealing initially, but if it compromises on these aspects, it could lead to increased costs in the long run due to expensive maintenance or repairs. Fall or early spring provides the perfect conditions for new plants to establish roots in the temperate soil, away from the harsh extremes of summer heat or winter cold. Hardscaping projects like patios or retaining walls should be undertaken when temperatures consistently stay above freezing. This ensures that the materials used, whether concrete, stone, or brick, are set properly and remain durable and stable over time. Contemporary trends in landscaping are shifting toward more sustainable and natural approaches. Naturalistic planting moves away from traditional manicured gardens. It involves using native plants and wildflowers that look neither overly groomed nor neglected, creating a diverse and vibrant tapestry that seems to have sprung up naturally. Eco-friendly rain gardens are designed to capture and utilize rainwater. By slowing down the flow of rainwater and irrigation, rain gardens prevent precious rainwater from running into storm drains. They act as natural water reservoirs, nourishing the garden while reducing water waste. With increasing awareness of insects’ critical role in our ecosystems, there’s a growing trend toward creating bug-friendly gardens. This trend aims to create sanctuary for these vital creatures. The focus is on cultivating plants that attract and sustain a variety of insects and excluding invasive species that disrupt the local ecology. Discussing these ideas with your landscape professional can lead to landscaping solutions that fit your needs while being ecologically responsible and forward-thinking. Create landscaping for your yard that blooms with potential and adds value to your home. Sources for this article included: bhg.com, honorcu.com, and gardendesign.com.

Want Your Kitchen to Make a Splash? Revamp a Tired-Looking Countertop
By Anne Yankus
Tired of your current kitchen or bathroom, but not sure how to give them an easy face lift? Consider replacing the countertop and backsplash (or both). Changing out your countertop or backsplash is a great way to bring fresh appeal to these busy, hard-working rooms. It may seem superfluous to update your countertops just because you want something new to look at, but that’s not the only value you’ll get from a refresh. Updating countertops can raise the value of your home by approximately three times the value of your original countertops. You can boost that bump by going with a higher-value material than you have in your current kitchen or bathroom, like upgrading from inexpensive tile or laminate to stone or natural wood. You can also take the opportunity to increase your counter space by adding length or depth to your counters or make the area more functional by replacing areas that are too chipped or worn to use. Another benefit to re-doing your counter space is the chance to make it more accessible to you and your family by raising or lowering the height to suit your needs. Once you’ve decided to update, there are still decisions to made about materials. There are lots of trending countertop and backsplash styles to choose from! For backsplashes, ceramic and porcelain tiles are considered timeless classics that
won’t go out of style any time soon. Matte backsplashes are old news—the glossier, the better! Glass tiles are also in, and subway tiles behind the sink are making a comeback. Mixing and matching tiles of different materials is a new trend that can give your backsplash a unique pattern or mosaic look. For countertops, tiling is seeing a resurgence, but it’s not the only game in town. Terrazzo counters are rising in popularity, as are sustainably sourced materials like limestone, recycled glass, and bamboo. Natural colors and patterns are in for 2024. Pairing warm undertones, terracotta hues, and colorful marbling with natural or textured finishes (like honed or leathered granite) is a pleasing and popular look. If you’re happy with the kitchen, why not give your bathroom some TLC instead? The “timeless” aesthetic is trending in both kitchens and bathrooms. People want to use rooms that they won’t get tired of looking at for a long while, experts say. Handmade accents on bathroom vanities are gaining popularity, with custom-carved stone backsplashes or warm,

Understanding CBD What You Need to Know
By Angella Arndt
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a compound derived from the hemp plant, which is considered a cousin of marijuana. According to a recent Forbes Health Survey of 2,000 American adults,“60 percent of respondents have tried a cannabidiol (CBD) product and believe CBD has health and wellness benefits, including the potential to improve sleep, reduce anxiety, and relieve pain.” The same survey revealed that“most consumers use CBD to reduce stress and relax, closely followed by seeking pain relief and assistance with sleep quality.” CBD products have grown in popularity since the 2018 Farm Bill legalized and regulated industrial hemp cultivation, production, and sale. CBD regulations vary by state. Although hemp-based CBD is legal at the federal level, some states consider it illegal to use or possess any cannabis product, and some only allow its use for medical purposes. According to a recent Journal of the American Medical Association study, CBD use has increased 50 percent over the past four years. Research continues regarding the benefits and risks of using these products. Three types of CBD include full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and CBD isolate. Full-spectrum CBD contains all parts of the cannabis plant and may have a maximum of 0.3 percent THC to comply with federal law. Broad-spectrum CBD has most compounds of the cannabis plant and may contain trace amounts of THC. Isolates are comprised only of CBD and should not contain other cannabinoids or THC. CBD may be consumed in several ways. When used sublingually, an oil, patch, tincture, or spray is placed under the tongue so the CBD may directly enter the bloodstream. Orally ingested products include edibles like capsules, candies, gummies, snacks, and beverages. CBD vapes come in pre-filled or refillable cartridges for inhalation; avoid those containing a solvent called propylene glycol. CBD products applied to the skin include ointments, lotions, creams, and salves. Each product’s strength, absorption amounts, onset of effects, and side effects differ. How do you decide which type of product is right for you? Each form of the product absorbs differently. Tinctures usually take approximately 15 to 30 minutes and are often used for treating pain and anxiety. Edibles travel through the digestive system before entering the bloodstream, so it may take 30 minutes or more and may be impacted by other foods in your system. Capsules can also take 30 minutes or more to absorb. CBE inhaled through vaping takes 30 seconds or less to enter the bloodstream, providing the most immediate relief. Topical products such as lotions and creams are typically used for pain and inflammation relief in sore muscles and joints; they may work right away or take several hours. Although the FDA has approved Epidiolex, a prescription drug used to treat some epileptic seizures, it has not approved any consumer CBD products. Several CBD 62

manufacturers have received warning letters from the FDA because the CBD levels in their products do not match those listed on product labels, they made broad health claims, or they promoted their CBD products as dietary supplements. When you buy CBD products, it’s important to know what you are purchasing. Review the certificate of analysis (COA) for the lot number of the specific product. (COAs are found on the manufacturer’s website, often accessible via QR code on the packaging.) A COA is issued when a third-party laboratory analyzes the CBD product. This certificate includes information about the concentration of hemp extract, the percentage of THC and other cannabinoids, and the presence of contaminants like bacteria, mold, yeast, pesticides, or residual solvents. The COA should state that the lab meets “ISO 17025” standards, which means it maintains high scientific standards. Check to see if the company’s testing methods are validated by one of the three national standard-setting organizations: the Association of Official Chemists, the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia, or the U.S. Pharmacopeia. Choose products that show the amount of CBD in each dose, not in the whole bottle. Be wary of products that only list the amount of total cannabinoids but not how much CBD they contain. Products with labels that do not contain the CBD amount may be represented as whole plant or full-spectrum hemp products or claim they contain other compounds. Consider a different product and retailer if you cannot obtain a COA. If you want to try CBD, purchase quality products from a reputable source. Retailers should be knowledgeable and happy to answer your questions. Speak with your doctor to make sure that the CBD product will not adversely interact with other medications you may be taking (antipsychotics, antidepressants, or opioids, for example). Take time to understand CBD products before using them so you are familiar with their potential risks and benefits. Positive Perspective
I’m Not the Problem! Playing the Blame Game
How often do we find ourselves blaming others for our own misfortunes? Who do we blame? God? The government? Society? Our parents, spouses, children, siblings, or friends? “Blame is the world’s excuse.” —David R. Hawkins, MD, PhD
My husband, Manny, and I frequently have deep and lengthy conversations. Years ago, he shared with me that when we place blame on others, we point fingers: one finger points at the person we’re blaming, three fingers point directly back at us, and the last finger is pointing at the problem. The conclusion that Manny and I have drawn is that blame generally feels better than guilt. “When we blame, we give away our power.” —Greg Anderson
When we give away our power to someone else, we become vulnerable, weak, depressed, stuck, confused, lost, doubtful, and hurt. We feel trapped in our own misery because we do not want to face the ugly truth about the problem…or about ourselves. “Blaming others is nothing more than excusing yourself.” —Robin S. Sharman
If we are constantly blaming someone else, then we cannot progress or mature. We can’t become wiser or find peace. There is nothing that we can do to feel better in our own skin because we have avoided looking inward. When we blame others, we let
By Janet Van deWalle
ourselves off the hook. We will never be able to find the solution to the TRUE problem. “Most of the blaming…is a desperate attachment cry, a protest against disconnection….” —Sue Johnson
So, why do we do it? According to psychologists, blaming others is a psychological projection. It is a defense mechanism. When we use others as our scapegoats, we are protecting our own hearts. We fool ourselves into believing we are not the problem. Blaming others gives us the belief of self-satisfaction. “Stop the blame game. Stop! Stop looking out the window and look in the mirror!” —Eric Thomas
Grab your power back. Make a decision to own your life…the good, the bad, and the ugly. Look inside yourself, stop pointing fingers, and find the solution to the true problem. Is it painful? Absolutely. Does it take time and patience? Longer than any of us would like. If we make the decision to look inside ourselves, to fix our own lives, and to look at the true problem, we will emerge on the other side as happier, healthier people. We can be better for ourselves, for those we love, and for those who love us. We can even change the world, one person at a time. Best of all? “If you own this story, you get to write the ending.” —Brené Brown
