Welcome to the Women’s Edition
38th
Anniversary issue!
Boy, is that a long time! The years have raced past us faster than a speeding bullet. When I reflect on all that has changed over the years, I am astounded at all that has occurred…personally, professionally, nationwide, and worldwide. It has been quite the ride.
Back in 1986, when we premiered our first issue, we were a small, blackand-white publication. The only full color was on our covers. We produced the magazine like all print was produced in 1986: run out the type, cut, paste…all manually done. Our computer was a Macintosh 128K (that’s K, for kilobytes). It was the first desktop personal computer with graphic design capabilities. Printing now? It’s all computer to plate…everything is done digitally. Our computers now? We now have gigabytes of storage. One gigabyte equals 1,048,576 kilobytes. Those numbers still astound me!
Now, here come the thank-yous!
—To Roxy: One of the constants since almost the premiere of Women’s Edition is Roxy Orr, our Operations Manager. Roxy started in 1988, when we still had our office in my home. She has been an integral part of the publication for the last 36 years. Roxy started as a part-time bookkeeper. Over the years, she took on more and more responsibilities. She is my right-hand person who makes it all flow seamlessly. I would like to thank you, Roxy, from the bottom of my heart!
—To our advertisers: You are the ones who make Women’s Edition possible. Many of you have been with us for decades, and some of you have been with us since the very beginning! You are the ones who allow us to produce Women’s Edition every month. Thank you all…every single one of you.
—To our copy editor: In order to get the magazines out each month, Liz Huett makes sure our “i’s” are dotted and our “t’s” are crossed. She makes us look good! Thank you, Liz.
—To our distributors: You take Women’s Edition around every month to over 560 locations. You are the face of Women’s Edition to our distribution points. A huge thank you goes out to all of you.
—To our readers: Last… but definitely not least …I want to thank all of you. You have supported us by picking us up each month and supporting our advertisers. You tell them how you discovered their businesses through our magazine. We are proud to bring you the cream of the crop of local businesses. Thank you so very much…and keep it up!
With an abundance of gratitude…thank you all! See you next month.

Repeat with another layer of the same ingredients, along with additional spices, if desired. Dice a ripe tomato and sprinkle on top of the bread mixture. teaspoons of cinnamon, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and a dash of salt. Put 2 cups of washed blackberries into a bowl. Sprinkle with sugar and muddle lightly, then set aside. Generously grease and flour a Bundt-style pan. Mix 1/2 cup of sour cream with 1/2 cup of buttermilk, then set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, cream 2 sticks of soft butter and 2 cups of sugar for 3-4 minutes. Add 4 eggs, one at a time, and beat well. Add the dry ingredients alternately with the wet ingredients. Fold in (by hand) the muddled blackberries. Use a light touch! The batter may still be a bit purple. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Lightly tap the pan on the counter to break any air bubbles. Bake on a cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 70-80 minutes—use a skewer or toothpick to test if it is done. Let cool and invert. Dust lightly with powdered sugar. Serve with vanilla bean ice cream.
Carrot Bundt Cake
Mix 3 cups of flour, 2 and 1/2 cups of sugar, 1 Tablespoon of baking soda, 1 Tablespoon of cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon of salt. In another bowl, beat together 4 eggs, 1 and 1/2 cups of vegetable oil, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Lightly mix in 2 cups of shredded carrots (that’s about 3 carrots), 1 cup of chopped walnuts, and 1 cup of applesauce. Pour the mixture into a well-greased and floured Bundt-style pan. Bake for 75-80 minutes at 325 degrees. Let cool for 10-20 minutes. Invert onto a serving platter. Drizzle with icing, if desired.
Uncle Junior’s Favorite Old-Time Cake
For the cake: Using a blender or food processor, blend 1/4
cup of hot water, 3/4 cup of pitted prunes, and 1 cup of buttermilk. Blend until you like the consistency. In another bowl, whisk together 2 and 3/4 cups of flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 2 Tablespoons of cocoa powder, and 2 teaspoons of cinnamon. Mix together 2/3 cup of vegetable oil, 2 eggs, 1 cup of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Blend into the buttermilk mixture. Slowly add the buttermilk blend to the flour mixture and mix well. Pour into a greased and floured 9x13-inch baking dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Remove to cool before adding icing.
For the icing: In a saucepan over low heat, melt a 1-ounce square of unsweetened chocolate, 2 Tablespoons of butter, 12 large marshmallows, and 1/4 cup of water. Stir in 2 cups of sifted powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, a dash of salt, and 1/2 cup of chopped pecans. Beat until well mixed. Spread warm icing over the cooled cake.
Oatmeal Raisin Cookies
Soak 1 cup of raisins in hot water for 5 minutes, then drain and pat dry. Whisk together 1 and 1/4 cups of flour with 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, 2 teaspoons of baking soda, and 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of salt. In another bowl, cream 1 and 1/2 sticks of soft butter with 1 cup of brown sugar, 6 Tablespoons of white sugar, 1 egg, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla. Add the flour mixture to the creamed butter mixture. Mix in 2 cups of rolled (old-fashioned) oats and the raisins. Portion out onto parchment-lined cookie sheets and flatten a bit. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until the next day. Bake at 350 degrees for 16-18 minutes.

Happy Father’s Day
Celebrate the Men in Your Life!
Father’s Day is coming up. It’s time to honor our favorite men! This is a great opportunity to spoil our men with a few new things. I know it’s not easy for some men to accept new fashion ideas—they love their comfy, worn t-shirts and stretched-out sweatpants (can you blame them?). How do we get our men to love new clothing items just as much? The trick is to purchase new items that emulate their old ones!
From babies to grandpas, everyone loves softness against their skin. Luckily, softness has been a priority for clothing manufacturers ever since the pandemic, when people demanded comfort every day. When choosing new clothing for men, be sure to feel the softness of the fabric, and keep in mind that natural fibers continue to soften as they are washed. Polyester fibers are often added to fabrics to keep the item from shrinking. This material, though soft, is generally too hot for the high temps of summer. These days, you can purchase items that look and feel as though they have already been tumbled in the washer several times. If that’s the level softness he prefers, go for it!
For casual wear, consider the more modern jogger instead of sweatpants. Soft, loose, and with an elastic waist, you can’t get comfier than joggers. For summer, the fabrics are usually a stretchy cotton knit. The cut is a little trimmer than the sweatpants of years past and is really quite flattering and versatile for streetwear.
Waistline pleats on pants for men (and women) were brought back last season, along with a looser, straighter leg silhouette. This is a refreshing reboot that looks very updated and is quite comfortable.
By Holly Bell
10 June 2024 Fashion Worthy
The preppy aesthetic is a 2024 fashion trend that updates the classics. Remember polo shirts? They’re back in a big way. All men look sharp in a collared knit shirt that dresses up well or looks great casually with shorts. Nautical colors are also back, which are flattering to all men. Stripes are a big print favorite. I especially like stripes across the chest with a solid color block below it. This pattern emphasizes the chest, minimizes the waist, and is universally flattering.
Don’t forget about his favorite longsleeved shirts! Men naturally gravitate toward wearing short sleeves in the summer, but I prefer the look of a rolledup long sleeve. Roll those long sleeves up past his elbow. This shows off a nice forearm and thickens the bicep for a very flattering masculine visual.
Whether he likes it or not, there will be times that your man needs to dress up. When that time comes, make sure his shirt stays tucked in all day! Nothing looks messier than a shirt coming untucked. Purchase slightly fitted shirts that are long enough. The shirt tails should fall several inches below his waist so there is plenty of fabric to tuck in. I know women who tuck their tops into their underwear to ensure a solid tuck, an idea you may want to float past your man. If that is not feasible, he might try the “military tuck.” If there is too much material around the waist, fold the sides into themselves, then tuck in for a neatly fitted style.
If the man in your life only dresses up and wears a tie occasionally, remind him that the tip of the tie should meet his belt. While we’re talking about appropriate length, remember that the break of the pants should sit just above the shoe. The wrong length of pant can spoil a good look all by itself.
Combining colors successfully is one of the most important factors in a well-dressed man. Get him started on a great look by building his wardrobe around neutrals. Hair color is the first consideration. Men with brown hair look great in all tones of brown, from tan to chocolate. Men with blonde hair look great in vanilla tones to darker taupe. Let’s not forget men with white hair! They look fantastic in grays of all sorts. The lucky few who have black hair can wear all neutrals successfully.
Going for a monocratic look is always dependable, but what if your man has a big personality and wants to show it? He needs a brighter accessory color! For accent colors, let yourself be guided by the color of his eyes. Blue and green can really make blue eyes pop, and brown eyes can smolder in blues, greens, and pinks. Personally, I love a man in pink—it warms up his complexion and shows his versatility. All guys appreciate a little extra attention. Let’s celebrate them with joy!

ServiceOne
One-Stop Home Service Repair
One Simple Solution. The slogan for ServiceOne says it all!
That simplicity sets the company apart from the area’s heating and cooling companies, electrical companies, plumbing companies, and so on. ServiceOne offers heating and cooling, plumbing and drains, appliance repair, electrical service, generators, and indoor air quality services. ServiceOne is like six companies in one. It’s a locally operated, one-stop service organization that has been around for 30 years.
“Other warranty companies are nationally owned and rely on outsourcing your repairs to local contractors,” points out Alice Swartz, the marketing coordinator for ServiceOne. “Our technicians are part of our team. They are certified, trained in house, and know the area. We connect to our customers because we are their neighbors! They know they are getting quality service.”
The unique service model is designed with families and their homes in mind. John Churchill established the business in 2003. His son, Jeff, serves as the vice president. The group has nearly 60 of its own licensed, bonded, and insured technicians and has an additional customer service and administrative support staff of close to 40 people. The company doesn’t subcontract work to independent contractors.
“We offer a unique array of services,” Alice says. “We have home warranties that cover all of the repair and replacement services a home might need. We offer a variety of service plans for the specific repair needs of homeowners as well as on-demand services when you need a reputable service person for a one-time repair.”
Service plans are very popular because they provide the best product for a specific home at affordable prices. They provide peace of mind just in case an emergency repair is needed. “We offer a wide variety of annual service plans based on your needs. For example, perhaps you have concerns about plumbing but all your appliances are brand new. You can purchase a plan that addresses your specific situation.”
ServiceOne’s philosophy toward customers is the hallmark of the team. “We want to keep our customers comfortable in their home,” Alice attests. “Knowing that they can call one number and get support for any home service issue lifts a huge burden off their shoulders. We have the satisfaction of knowing we are making a life better and a home safer by sending technicians who know what they are doing.”
That commitment to prompt, courteous customer service has led to many accolades. ServiceOne is a recipient of the BBB Silver Award of Distinction for Significant Commitment to Ethical Business Practices. ServiceOne also boasts a 4.8-star customer rating—you can read their 3,000+ positive reviews online.
Customers rave about their experiences and spotlight the

variety of services offered. Christopher D. says, “ServiceOne just finished my annual air conditioning check-up. Not only did they perform that task with efficiency, they figured out how to get my whole-house humidifier to run the blower independent of a call for heat. Super impressed!”
Another Christopher who regularly uses the business adds, “ServiceOne never disappoints. Larry, the technician, was great getting my HVAC working quickly. I have had their home warranty for the last five years. No one has been better.”
William was impressed not only by the service but by the equipment. “The tech was spectacular! He let me know what he was going to do and did it all in good timing. The equipment we purchased is working beautifully. We put in the Daikin Fit system and are extremely happy. We are seeing the savings every month!”
“Our customer service team is exceptional,” Alice says. “We work very hard to work around homeowners’ calendars and pivot when there are weather delays. Our operators offer calm during a homeowner’s stressful time.”
Alice strives to educate homeowners on the difference between home insurance and a home warranty like the one provided by ServiceOne. “Many people think home insurance and home warranties are the same thing. They are not,” she explains. “A home warranty covers most of the operating systems within the home. When people realize that, they often purchase a warranty or service plan.”
For more than 30 years, ServiceOne has been One Simple Solution for residential and commercial installation and repair services in the Omaha and Council Bluffs metro area. They pride themselves on delivering 100 percent satisfactory service.
ServiceOne is located at 9335 J Street, in Omaha, and serves the entire metro area. You can reach the team by calling or texting 402-593-1111. Their website (serviceone.com) provides detailed information on services and service plans and includes a form to request services. What is peace of mind worth to you? Call ServiceOne and find out.

State Nicknames
Fascinating Tales…or Tall Tales?
By Deborah Daley
Some state’s nicknames are self-explanatory or have clear connections to geography, weather, or history. Others are a bit baffling. Let’s take a look, starting with the state where you probably picked up this magazine.
Nebraska: The Cornhusker State. Crops and sports tell the tale of this nickname. The University of Nebraska athletic teams have been known as the Cornhuskers since a sportswriter coined the phrase in 1899 to refer to one of the farm state’s most important jobs. The legislature adopted the name in 1945.
Iowa: The Hawkeye State. You might assume that Iowa got its nickname from the University of Iowa’s mascot, but it’s actually the other way around. Iowa’s nickname is in honor of Chief Black Hawk, a leader of the Sauk tribe. Chief Black Hawk’s personal memoir was the first Native American autobiography published in the United States. The state’s nickname was made official in 1838, before Iowa even became a state.
Alaska: The Last Frontier. Because of its great abundance of unsettled land, Alaska earned the nickname “The Last Frontier.” Its official motto is “North to the future.”The name Alaska itself comes from the Aleut word aleyska, meaning “great land.”
California: The Golden State. “There’s gold in them there hills” might be a phrase that helped to cement the nickname of this state. The name refers to the gold rush that began in 1848. California has officially been known as “The Golden State” since 1968.
Colorado: The Centennial State. Another nod to historical roots is Colorado’s nickname. The state joined the union as a state in 1876—exactly 100 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Delaware: The First State . On December 7, 1787, Delaware was the first of the 13 colonies to ratify the U.S. Constitution. It didn’t become its official nickname until May 23, 2002, following a request by Mrs. Anabelle O’Malley’s first grade class at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School in Wilmington.
Hawaii: The Aloha State. The word aloha means both “hello” and “good-bye” and is one of the most commonly used words in the native Hawaiian language. The legislature made the nickname official in 1959.
Idaho: The Gem State. The name Idaho is believed to be a Shoshone word for “gem of the mountain.” It refers to the state’s natural resources, including gemstones like opals, jade, and star garnets.
Indiana: The Hoosier State. No, Indiana did not get its nickname

from a marvelous film starring Gene Hackman about a small-town high school basketball team that went to the Indiana state championship. According to historical references, the nickname comes from a poem published in 1833 called “The Hoosier’s Nest.”Why Hoosier? Theories abound. My favorite is that the contractor Samuel Hoosier preferred Indiana laborers because they were known to be industrious.
Kentucky: The Bluegrass State. When settlers were coming to Kentucky, they were welcomed by field after field of tall grass with a blue cast. They called it bluegrass. Over time, the state came to be known as the Bluegrass State.
Missouri: The Show-Me State. Missouri’s nickname dates back to 1899, when Missouri Congressman Willard Duncan Vandiver stated,“Frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me. I am from Missouri. You have got to show me.” He was referencing the common-sense values of the people of Missouri. The nickname is widely used across Missouri today…but only unofficially.
New York: The Empire State. New York’s Empire State nickname recognizes the state’s plentiful resources. According to historical sources, George Washington penned a letter in 1785 referring to New York as resilient, rich, and the “seat of the empire.”
Ohio: The Buckeye State. The name stems from the buckeye trees that appear across the state. These trees bear nuts that Native Americans and early settlers likened to the eyes of male deer—that is, bucks. The nickname was confirmed by the Ohio state legislature in 1953.
Tennessee: The Volunteer State. Tennessee’s nickname is a tribute to the state’s citizens and their willingness to volunteer as soldiers. There is debate on which 19th-century battle is being referenced, but the story is that the government put out a call for 2,600 volunteers and 30,000 Tennesseans showed up to fight.
Wyoming: The Equality State. Wyoming’s nickname refers to the state’s focus on equality for all. It was the first state to grant women the right to vote, the right to serve on a jury, and the right to hold office back in 1869. The legislators’ motives were perhaps less progressive than they sound: As the least populous state, Wyoming needed its females to vote so it could meet the population requirements for statehood. Regardless, the landmark legislation is still celebrated by the state’s nickname.

Ginger’s Hang-Up
Custom Framing at its Best
For the last 50 years, the people of Omaha have turned to Ginger’s Hang-Up to make sure their precious heirlooms, fine artwork, and personal creations are preserved through custom framing. The third-generation business is well known for their artistically designed and skillfully crafted custom frames.
The shop offers a complete custom framing experience. In addition to having framing production in-house, the group provides design support, materials, and glass. They also offer delivery and installation. They carry more than 1,500 styles of custom moldings, as well as multiple types of glass and framer’s grade acrylic, including UV-filtering and museum quality. Their selection of acid-free mat colors (in 4-ply and 8-ply) is virtually endless.
Allen Keller, the owner and operator of the shop, began his journey at Ginger’s Hang-Up on the production side of the business. He is now the primary framer. “I have always been good with my hands, and creativity is just part of my DNA. I previously owned a small tiling company and took four years of woodworking in school, which gave me great experience for this job,” Allen says. “A peace comes over you when working with wood. The brightness you feel when you build something with your own hands is amazing.”
Allen’s parents were high school sweethearts in Scottsbluff, and his family traveled in his earlier years because his father was in military. They eventually moved back to Nebraska, where Allen earned a computer programming degree from Bellevue University in 2007.
“At the time, my school experience was in data programming, and there was a shift to digital,” he recalls. “I had always liked the freedom of working with my hands and decided to look for employment in that area, instead.” He found the job at Ginger’s Hang-Up in 2016, and he was hooked.
Ginger’s Hang-Up is named for the original owner, Ginger Semin, who established the business in 1978. She owned three stores during her lifetime. After her death, the business went to Jeff Bosiljevac, one of her employees, who eventually left half the store to Allen and the other half to his own mother. Allen bought her share in 2016.
“I believe customers choose to come to Ginger’s HangUp because they can rely on us to treat their pieces with the utmost care and to deliver a finished product they will be thrilled to display,” Allen says. “Our knowledge base is extensive, and we continue to educate ourselves on the latest techniques and approaches.”
Someone who understands the value and care that Ginger’s Hang-Up provides is customer Amber Baker. “Allen is masterful at his craft,” Amber shares. “Working with him is as
By Deborah Daley
much a delight as choosing the artwork itself. He elevates each piece to its highest level. His creativity and knowledge, combined with his warm and engaging personality, make the entire framing experience pleasurable.”
Allen notes that every project is different. He never knows what commission might come through the door. “A few years ago, we had a one-of-a-kind request,” Allen recalls. “We were asked to do a special framing for a gentleman retiring from the Coast Guard. The object was a blade from the helicopter he had flown. The military insignia was etched on the blade, and all his colleagues had signed it. It was beautiful piece that required an innovative approach. I was told he was overcome with joy when he received it.”
This small business owner enjoys the freedom that custom framing involves but reminds people that when you are operating a business, you have to wear lots of hats. “I never stop learning. I have had to educate myself on back-end operations such as accounting and marketing.” Allen says he is fortunate that customers who started with Ginger close to 50 years ago still come back to the shop. “Over the years, we have developed not only relationships but friendships with our clients.”
Support of the community is also important to Allen. Ginger’s Hang-Up hosts a small gallery of local artists’ work inside their shop. The shop also participates in the annual Summer Arts Festival, along with other frame shops, in judging and framing student art projects for display. “Supporting and encouraging young artists is important. When they see their pieces professionally framed, their smiles light up the room.”
Let Allen light up the rooms of your home by raising your beloved artwork to its highest level! Ginger’s Hang-Up is located at 8435 Frederick Street, in Omaha. Store hours are Tuesday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Feel free to stop by or call 402-391-6440 with questions. The Joy of Cooking Outdoors!
Where Nature and Food Come Together
We’ve spent the last few years developing a deeper connection with outdoor comfort in the natural world. This is the year to spend less time going out to eat and more time cooking new foods. This is the year to bring together family and friends to make and break bread together. This is the year of the luxury outdoor kitchen!
This is good news for families everywhere (and your waistline might thank you, too). Imagine socializing around the grill as the scent of barbecue wafts through the air, company assembled in plush seating next to lush plants. On the flip side, a quiet night around the firepit makes a good detox after a long day at work. So, gather up your guests, make plans to entertain, and forge unforgettable memories.
While the most meaningful benefits of an outdoor kitchen are perhaps the bespoke meals and the time spent together in the outdoors, let’s not forget the return on investment. Outdoor kitchens are not cheap, but the ROI that experts estimate is between 100 and 200 percent. What’s not to love? Let’s dive into ideas for design, appliances, cabinetry, grills, and smokers. We’ll also take a look at entertainment options, patio and porch trends, and other fun aspects of living in the great outdoors.
An outdoor kitchen is more than a built-in grill next to a table and chairs. Indoors or out, kitchens are living space! A successful outdoor kitchen has a pleasing layout in a thoughtful design, with luxe appliances like pizza ovens, smokers, griddles, and built-in refrigerators. They also offer the functional appeal of sinks and storage cabinets, as well as the visual appeal of high-end countertops, furniture, and visual interest.
Before you choose materials, talk to your contractor about durability and maintenance. Higher quality finishes may cost more, but they’re likely to last longer. An outdoor kitchen endures the general wear and tear of any kitchen but also the extremes of four seasons and outdoor debris. Ask your designer about layout, function, lighting, and design options. Figure out your budget before you buy, and factor in funds for technology. Internet and cable may demand new space and extended budget, but what a fabulous addition for entertainment!
When you pour your heart into a kitchen design, consider natural stone like granite. Granite creates beautiful patterns and colors for a unique yet durable countertop. Natural granite holds up well under the relentless summer sun, and it’s often the least expensive option. In 2024, counters with wooden accents are notable—any design that suggests a bond with the earth feeds our fascination with nature.
When it comes to cabinetry, everyone prefers high-quality materials, sustainability, and master craftsmanship. Durable materials include stainless steel, marine-grade aluminum, weatherproofed wood, tile, slate, stucco, and polycarbonate plastics.
By Janette Calabro
Plastics are lightweight but tough enough to withstand sun and heat. High-density polyethylene is a weather-resistant plastic that comes in a variety of colors and finishes. Cleanup is easy with a bucket and sponge or garden hose. Stainless steel or aluminum cabinets and appliances are usually powder-coated for weatherization.
PVC cabinets are another attractive option. PVC is versatile, is weather-resistant, and comes in fun colors and textures. Some designs mimic real wood but are more durable. Masonry cabinetry is upscale craftsmanship. It often requires casing a metal frame or concrete blocks with a stucco veneer, embellished stone, or brick, resulting in classic elegance. Check with your contractor for the best aesthetic for your plan, considering durability, maintenance, and budget.
Polished stainless steel appliances are classic, and they look great so long as you keep them clean. Appliances increase the value of outdoor kitchens, whether they use gas, electricity, or charcoal. Outdoor hearth ovens are great for cooking dishes like fresh-baked bread, pizza, even steaks or cedarwood salmon. Fun fact: some outdoor ovens and grills include a calm, blue illumination encircling each knob like a halo in the darkness. Now, that’s elegance in cooking!
Outdoor versatility is the name of the game this year. Grills, smokers, and griddles are all the rage. For affordability, practicality, and just good old-fashioned backyard cooking, these grills have stood the test of time: Weber (for propane), the Big Green Egg (best in charcoal), and Camp Chef (best pellet grill).
Before you grab the best-reviewed grill, consider your own tastes and needs. Not every grill is for every cook! Consider grill size, convenience of cooking, and clean-up maintenance. With charcoal grills, you’re going to wait for the coals to get hot, but you’ll end up with to-die-for flavor in meats and veggies from dripping fats, oils, and seasonings over the charcoal. With a gas grill, the process of heating is as easy as turning a knob, but you won’t get the flavor of a smoky fire.
Dry smokers have a lower cooking temperature, allowing tough cuts of meat to tenderize without scorching. Smokers have two chambers: one for the food, and one for the fire. It’s the indirect heat that cooks so slowly. Additional smoke is created from smoldering wood chips. Pellet smokers combine oven and smoker together, creating an intense smoky flavor. Upkeep isn’t bad—just clean out the ashtray after cooking and wipe with a damp cloth.
Want a fun cooking alternative? Electric griddles are versatile and beginner-friendly because their flat, smooth
20 June 2024 Fresh Concept
cooking surface doesn’t require flame. They’re fantastic for breakfast foods like pancakes and bacon, but that’s not all. Griddles can sear, steam, and smoke! Veggies and meat dishes turn out moist and delectable. The large surface area allows the cook to get creative, cooking multiple items at the same time. Griddles can run on gas, propane, electricity, charcoal, or flame fueled by wood, so talk to your professional about which will serve you best. Don’t forget to plan for utilities to power up gas and electric appliances!
L- shaped kitchen designs and open floor plans create an easy flow of traffic around cooking space and entertainment gatherings. A U-shaped layout accommodates a kitchen island in the middle while providing plenty of counter space and room for guests to move. Whether your kitchen is on a deck or patio, boost the landscape with colorful containers of flowers, plants, and lush greenery. Strategically placed umbrellas help during the afternoon heat, and proper lighting extends eating adventures into the night.
Sometimes, we want to eat outdoors but it just seems like a hassle. Everyone can enjoy it more if there’s already a cozy spot waiting! Seating near the cooking area (think barstools at an island or built-in bar) focuses guests at a gathering point. Adjacent patio space is excellent for a formal dining area with a table and chairs. Some layouts feature a built-in concrete countertop that steps up to a serving bar, or stacked stone cladding with brick or river stone for outdoor fireplaces. Fire features conjure up a cozy, rustic atmosphere. Outdoor sectionals can be rearranged to meet the needs of any crowd,
Need Some Space to Call Your Own?
and they often come with hidden storage.
For that nighttime game on the big screen, or that fabulous playlist, make sure outlets are accessible near the main cooking area and beyond. Make your patio space an outdoor home theater or complete music experience with Wi-Fi speaker rocks and soundbars. Outdoor TVs are moisture resistant and come with anti-glare coatings and stronger backlighting for better visibility, even when the sun is still out.
Warm up chilly evenings on an adjacent patio with a firepit. Toasting marshmallows and eating s’mores under the stars always makes for a memorable get-together. Add a pergola for privacy or to enhance your space. Pergolas are commonly built with vertical posts supported by crossbeams. They define outdoor spaces while creating visual interest. When greenery and vines grow over the structure, they provide shade. If you can’t wait for the plants, you can always get your own retractable sun shade. Pergolas add value to your home, too! Some estimates show a return on investment between 50 and 80 percent.
The heart of the backyard is where technology, design, sustenance, and nature blend together in a space to entertain, relax, explore culinary tastes, and extend the creature comforts from inside to outside. Our growing appreciation for outdoor kitchens goes beyond convenience. Elevate your outdoor living, and a healthier lifestyle will follow!

Anderson Structures
Superior Custom Builds
A legacy of excellence, with strong family ties, superior workmanship, and a reputation for putting customers first—these are all characteristics of Anderson Structures, LLC, based in Oakland, Nebraska. If you are looking for residential personal storage or outbuildings, buildings for your business, or quality structures to protect your agricultural investments and equipment, look no further than Anderson Structures.
Oakland native Paul Anderson and his wife, Anna, bought the company in 2019 and continue to co-own it. “I began working for my brothers-in-law in the late 1970s, right after graduating from high school,” Paul recalls. “At the time, they worked in grain handling and storage. Eventually, they expanded into building construction and engineering, and I learned all aspects of the trade. It is hard for me to believe, but I have been in this business for 40 years.” As the head of Anderson Structures, Paul is responsible for all aspects of the business, from sales to marketing, as well as designing structures and scheduling production crews.
When Paul says that Anderson Structures handles all types of buildings, he is not exaggerating—just check out the project photos at anderson-structures. com. “Our website showcases many of our projects, and the variety is amazing,” he says. “We build homes, farm and storage buildings, she-sheds, park shelters, horse barns and riding arenas, shops, pool buildings, basketball courts, RV storage, and even dog kennels. If you have a need, we can design it and build it.”They also build a structure known as a “barn-dominium,” which is a barn or workshop building with a fully finished portion that can serve as a residence.
Buildings created by Anderson Structures are engineered to the specific needs of the customer, which can lead to some interesting requests.
Buildings created by Anderson Structures are engineered to the specific needs of the customer, which can lead to some interesting requests. “We built an indoor basketball court with a theater, and a hardware store,” Paul shares. “We also recently built a car wash, complete with heated floors. During the pandemic, we created a structure over a pool.”
One of Paul’s most unique projects was with customer Brett Johnson. Working together, Paul and Brett designed a customer-built farm shop/storage with an office that had mammoth storage for equipment and personal use items, a garage shop, huge entertainment rooms, living areas, and vast windows to view the spectacular scenery in the area. “I came to Paul because Anderson Structures is a local company with a great reputation for workmanship and high-quality product,” Brett says. “He and I developed the design and created the engineering plans for this unique project, and I couldn’t be happier with the end result.”
By Deborah Daley
Paul says the firm’s strong reputation is what keeps customers coming back. “Our motto is that we build our customers’ structures as if we were building them for ourselves,” he attests. “We take pride in our workmanship, and we strive to exceed expectations. As a result, we work with many repeat customers and many people who have been referred to us by other customers.” He also believes strongly in using high-quality materials, which his customers appreciate. Anderson Structures is a local dealer for the popular Lester Buildings and Sentinel brand buildings and prefers to use the highest-quality products available.
The construction industry is not without its challenges. “In this day and age,” Paul notes, “people want immediate results. I communicate up front with our customers so they understand that building structures is a process and, depending on the complexities of the design, can take significant time. After the design process, we have to obtain the proper permits, work with contractors for concrete crews, electricity and plumbing, and then construct the building.”
However, the rewards of the work consistently outweigh the challenges. “I enjoy driving by a building years after we built it, seeing it in use and standing the test of time,” Paul says. In addition, many of his customers have become lifelong friends.
A vital piece of Paul’s successful business is having a crew that he can depend on. When Paul had COVID-19, he was hospitalized for more than 130 days. After he recovered, he found that he was not able to do the incredibly physical parts of the building process as well as he could before he was sick. Luckily, he says, “ I have an exceptional crew that takes pride in their work, as well as being talented in their trade. Together we have over 60 years of building experience in the building business.” We all need a team to rely on! “Owning a business is a marathon, not a sprint,” he points out. “You have to put the time in, often sacrificing your personal agendas. You learn to work smarter.”
The office for Anderson Structures is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 1151 County Road H, in Oakland, Nebraska. Reach them by phone at 402-685-6176 or online at anderson-structures.com.

Smoothing Out the Creases
Wrinkle Prevention and Treatment
By Loretta McCollum
Be honest. Do you ever look in the mirror, press your fingers to your hairline, and lift, imagining your face minus the wrinkly forehead? Do you pull back the skin around your mouth, trying to smooth out those deep jowl lines? Have turtlenecks and scarves become wardrobe staples? If you said yes to any of these questions, keep reading.
It’s important to recognize the common causes of wrinkles and how to minimize their development. Sun exposure is a common culprit. The sun’s UV rays cause free radicals to form in our skin layers, damaging elastin fibers and promoting wrinkles. Always use a good sunscreen. Smoking also increases the number of free radicals, causing skin to age prematurely.
Diet is a factor. Consuming large amounts of processed foods prevents your skin from being as supple as it could be. Nutrient-rich foods like proteins and fresh fruits and vegetables contain the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants needed to help keep your skin soft. Drink lots of water. Collagen is the primary connective tissue in the skin, and it’s mostly made up of water.
Stress can also make you look older than your years—and not just because you’re frowning! When you’re stressed and fatigued, your body releases more of the hormone cortisol, which is known to cause premature aging. While you’re sleeping, your body produces HGH (human growth hormone), stimulating cell growth.
Fine lines and wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process, so it’s impossible to avoid them entirely. However, we all want to look our best, and there are many ways to minimize their appearance.
Laser therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses light energy to repair and regenerate skin cells. The laser transmits photons into the skin’s membranes, increasing collagen production and blood circulation. It’s a good option for the forehead, mouth, and eye areas. Your dermatologist can recommend which type is best for you.
Chemical peels are a popular choice. They’re typically used on the face, neck, and hands. They improve the appearance of wrinkled skin by using a chemical solution to remove the skin’s top layer. The new skin is smoother and appears less wrinkled. Following treatment, patients may experience sunburn-like symptoms. Prolonged sun exposure should be avoided for several weeks.
Ultrasound therapy is similar to laser therapy. It minimizes fine lines and wrinkles by directing focused ultrasound energy at the deep, structural skin tissue to stimulate collagen production. This type of treatment is generally used on the brow or neck and under

the chin. Some immediate results are visible, but ultimate results occur over two to three months, with results lasting up to one year.
Fillers such as Botox are tried-and-true wrinkle reducers. Botox has been around for a while! This non-invasive wrinkle treatment can diminish frown lines as well as deep creases between the eyebrows and at the corners of the eyes. The toxin is injected into underlying muscle, causing the muscle to relax and gradually smoothing out the overlying skin. The effects last three to four months, at which time the injections can be repeated. This procedure involves very little downtime.
Daxxify is a relatively new Botox alternative that contains peptides as opposed to human or animal products. It can smooth out the deepest lines, and results last up to six months, reducing the frequency of treatments needed to maintain results.
Soft tissue fillers like Juvéderm contain hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring body substance. These fillers are injected into the skin. Results last between six and 24 months.
One of the newest forms of wrinkle treatment, fat transfer, uses fat cells from the patient’s own body. Fat cells are removed through liposuction, cleansed, processed, and injected into the wrinkled area to plump and support the skin. There’s very little chance of allergic reaction, and results are visible up to several years. Local anesthetic is used, and patients may experience some post-procedure swelling.
Your dermatologist may prescribe a topical anti-aging cream. Musely is one of the newest creams on the market. It helps minimize wrinkles, brighten dull skin, improve skin texture, and accelerate skin cell turnover. It’s custom-compounded using ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and retinoids. Optimal results are visible in six to eight weeks.
Face and neck lifts provide long-term results for wrinkle reduction. Performed by plastic surgeons, these procedures remove excess skin and lift and tighten muscles and tissue. Patients have several days of downtime following the procedure, but results last up to 10 years.
You may not be able to recapture your youth, but your skin care professional can help you achieve healthier, younger-looking skin. Schedule a consultation and start smoothing out those creases!

Mastering the Magic of Wall Coverings Coat Your Walls in Personality
By Robyn V. Powell
The walls of a room are its largest surface. Like a blank canvas, your walls create an important backdrop that will set the tone for the entire space. Painting your walls can be absolutely transformative. Science has proven that color impacts human psychology, influencing mood, energy levels, and even hunger! Because wall color and texture can dramatically change the way a room looks and feels, an understanding of how to use color effectively can unleash the power to create a beautiful and inviting living space that reflects your style and enhances your quality of life.
Color trends for 2024 usher in a fresh new mood, one that is bold and confident. Today, the trend is to create multi-dimensional interiors using layered tones and deep shades. When it comes to bold and daring, no color competes with trend-setting navy blue. Packed with personality and undeniable charm, navy blue draws inspiration from the sky and the sea, lending a crisp modern tone to any space. Bringing the outdoors in evokes a sense of calm and serenity and is a major design trend. Other nature-inspired palettes include mossy greens, rich chocolate brown, and even velvety charcoal.
hardware. A bedroom, on the other hand, is a highly personal space. Whether you opt for warm or cool tones, the key is to create a soothing ambience that is calming and relaxing. Moody deep shades are a great choice for a pint-sized powder room or a somber study. Cheerful yellow is a delightful color that invites the sunshine in and warms a room with a joyful glow. Classic beige is anything but boring. This timeless earthy neutral creates a backdrop that warms and comforts. For edgy drama, consider painting walls, wood trim, and even the ceiling a deep shade to envelop a space in chic style.
With the power of color, you can make a room feel open or intimate, relaxing or energizing, somber or cheerful. Choose a color that matches the mood you want to create in the space. Bold and energizing navy blue, for example, looks smart on kitchen cabinets, beautifully highlighting all sorts of metallic
Typically, flat, satin, and eggshell are the best finishes for interior walls, while semi-gloss and gloss are best for trim and doors. Flat paint hides imperfections but is more difficult to clean. It is best used in low-traffic areas such as a primary bedroom, a study, or a formal living room. Satin and

eggshell finishes are slightly shinier and easier to clean but are not as forgiving of imperfections. Walls must be carefully prepped and as smooth as possible before painting with satin or eggshell.
For people who crave rooms with personality, nothing delivers quite like wallpaper. Offering limitless versatility in terms of style, wallpaper is an ideal choice for personalizing your space. Wallpaper hides imperfections, it’s long-lasting, and it’s low-maintenance. No wonder, then, that wallpaper usage is on the rise, with bold, graphic, and whimsical styles and patterns dominating consumer choices. Heritage prints that evoke a strong connection to the past are also trending. These updated versions feel classic and traditional with a twist.
Vintage-inspired florals and lacy patterns are reinvented in fresh, colorful ways in modern wallpaper. Stripes of all sorts are appearing, from thick to thin to wavy. The fifth wall is also getting attention, as papered ceilings create an eye-catching focal point. Wallpaper landscape murals featuring forests, jungles, and mountains immerse one in nature, offering a sense of calm and escape.
While a fresh coat of paint is one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to update your home, selecting paint colors can be challenging for even the most decisive person. Interior designers and color consultants have the expertise to select colors that will work well with your flooring and furnishings. They are on top of trends and have a good eye for what colors will best complement any space. Whether your goal is make a room appear larger or brighter or to create a certain mood in a certain space, a designer can offer great insights.
An active household will typically need to be repainted every three to five years. Hiring professional painters comes with an up-front cost, but the long-term benefits demonstrate that it is a sound investment. Skilled painters are prepared to tackle any challenges, and they are familiar with the nuances of various paint types, textures, and techniques. Their expertise and attention to detail enable them to deliver a flawless finish and get the job done right. With a little planning and the right professionals, you can create a space that’s both beautiful and uniquely yours!

Physical Therapy Isn’t Just for Athletes
It’s a
Game Changer for Everyone!
By Leslie Byrne
What comes to mind when someone suggests physical therapy? Maybe you know it as PT, physiotherapy, or physio. Regardless of what you call it, physical therapy helps improve movement and function when illness, injury, or disability affect the body. Treatment includes exercises, massages, and education to assist in recovery. Physical therapy aims to relieve pain, help someone move better, or strengthen weak muscles.
One of the great things about physical therapy is that it is not just an in-office treatment. It is designed as a team effort between the physical therapist and the patient. Many treatments or exercises can be done at home to keep someone feeling great long-term. Patients are empowered to improve their own health and, possibly, to postpone or avoid surgery.
The list of benefits provided by physical therapy is long, and pain management is right at the top. Physicians and patients alike are on the hunt for ways to manage pain without opioids, and physical therapy is a great option. It can improve mobility, especially after an injury or surgery, and it can prevent future injuries by strengthening muscles, increasing flexibility, and improving balance. When physical therapists identify the areas that are weak or prone to injury, they can work with a patient to strengthen those areas with rehabilitation exercises. If your doctor recommends that you see a physical therapist, go! Do not brush it off, thinking the pain will go away on its own. Speed up your recovery by making that appointment. You do not need a physician’s referral to see a physical

therapist, though you might need a referral if you want your insurance policy to cover the cost of your visits.
Physical therapy can help treat pelvic floor issues in both women and men. For women, that often includes urinary incontinence, which is very common after labor and childbirth. For men, that includes help with erectile dysfunction. Because physical therapy reduces pain, patients can return to regular physical activity, which can help prevent or improve many chronic conditions, like heart disease and diabetes.
Athletes with sports injuries often take advantage of physical therapy because it improves the likelihood of a safe and speedy recovery. Treatment can also preserve muscle strength during recovery, which is important to many athletes. Physical therapists provide more than just rehabilitation; they educate patients so they can avoid invasive surgery and prevent re-injury—two crucial things for anyone trying to get back in the game.
Physical therapy is also an important part of recovery from orthopedic surgery. The recovery period from joint surgery can

be lengthy, especially for anyone over the age of 60. There is a lot of pain and immobility associated with most orthopedic surgeries that can make daily living difficult, even painful. Physical therapy can be painful, too, but the benefits are enormous and worth the effort. As a matter of fact, physical therapy is often indicated before surgery, as well, to make sure that a patient’s mobility and strength are sufficient to withstand the recovery period. After surgery, physical therapy improves blood flow to the affected joints. The improved circulation reduces pain and decreases joint stiffness. It also helps you preserve the muscle tone you had before surgery.
It is tempting to avoid moving around after surgery—after all, it hurts! Do not let the thought of some uncomfortable therapy sessions keep you from seeing a physical therapist after orthopedic surgery. If you do, you may experience joint swelling, stiffness, increased pain, a longer recovery, and reduced independence.
Many people are unaware that physical therapy and occupational therapy (OT) are distinctly different and are performed by providers with their own specialized training. The most significant difference between the two fields is that physical therapy focuses on improving someone’s ability to move their body, while occupational therapy focuses on performing specific daily activities. Occupational therapy is often used in mental health care and physical rehabilitation, while physical therapy is solely physical rehabilitation. Ultimately, physical therapy offers a pathway to improved quality of life, whether we are managing pain, recovering from injury or surgery, or enhancing overall physical well-being. By taking proactive steps to address health concerns through physical therapy, we can embark on a journey toward a pain-free, independent, and fulfilling life. If you’re experiencing discomfort or recovering from an injury or surgery, ask your physician or surgeon for a recommendation. Opt for someone with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from an accredited program who has passed a state licensure exam. Don’t hesitate to schedule that physical therapy appointment—it’s the first step toward putting your pain behind you!

Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Ambassador Real Estate
Helping Achieve Real Estate Dreams
People change homes for many reasons. Some need more space for a growing family or are looking to upgrade. For others, it’s time to downsize because their lifestyle or priorities have changed. No matter what brings you into the market for a new home, Jill Marie Bartling is ready to help you achieve your real estate dreams.
This Omaha native got her first taste of construction and real estate while part of an administrative team in the construction of the Children’s Hospital building. She was deeply involved in the construction process was a main point of contact between the facilities director and contractors. During this time, she attended a real estate seminar to learn more about the industry. She was fascinated by the business, but the timing was not suitable for her to transition into the field.
A few years later, a friend in the real estate business introduced Jill to a home builder. After they met, he told her to return when she got her real estate license and he would hire her. Jill took the required real estate classes, passed the exam, and received her license in 2002. She is a graduate of the Realtor Institute and a member of the Omaha Area Board of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors. She has received multiple awards, attesting to her success in the industry.
Jill is now a full-service residential real estate agent who has been helping clients buy, sell, build, and invest in their real estate portfolios for over 20 years. In 2012, she was introduced to Jerry Torczon and helped him with the launch of Richland Homes, serving as their builder representative for the first two years. “I helped select the standard features, options available, and subcontractors,” she says. “Richland Homes is a menu-driven home builder. They are not a custom builder, but clients can choose from a variety of options to customize their homes.” The menu-driven approach provides transparency by offering clients upfront pricing for desired upgrades. “Richland Homes strives to offer beautiful and affordable homes that combine practicality and comfort.”
When selling a home, several factors influence its value. Neighborhood comparisons that are similar and have recently sold are good indicators of a home’s value. Square footage, upgrades, updates, location, age, and condition each play an essential role. Jill provides her clients with a Seller Resource Guide that outlines the process, gives them a to-do list, and sets expectations. “Homeowners need to have a sales expert,” Jill advises. “Clients appreciate that I can handle both the sale of their current home and the purchase of a new home. My job is to help them with the process so they do not have to worry about it.”
Jill’s customer service philosophy is straightforward. “Let me take the stress off of you.” She understands that every

client is different and strives to make buying and selling homes as smooth as possible. “I am very hands-on and work hard for my clients. I talk to them and make sure we communicate and understand each other.” She says that having conversations helps ensure everyone is on the same page. “In real estate, you will fail if you cannot talk to people. It’s all about trust and helping people.”
Jill offers some advice for those seeking the services of a Realtor. Select a professional with knowledge and experience who understands the business. A Realtor should know the ins and outs of real estate law to ensure that transactions are handled correctly. Also, complying with Fair Housing rules and regulations is critical to avoid legal difficulties, which is why you need to hire a Realtor. Jill stays on top of new information and trends to retain the expertise needed to navigate the real estate process. She takes pride in being personally involved during each step of the process and is always available for her clients.
Giving back to the community is a priority for Jill. She regularly spearheads donation drives for the Eastern Nebraska Veterans’ Home. “I have so much respect for our veterans and appreciate their contributions to our country.”
Jill loves being a Realtor and says it is gratifying to receive client referrals. She enjoys making clients happy, whether they are buying an existing home or building a new one. Building a home is a special experience, she notes. “Clients see their home being built with their chosen options.” She experienced this herself when she built her very first home in 2001, a small multi-level. “I wasn’t licensed yet, but I loved the energy of the builder’s representative and picking out the colors for my new home with my young daughter,” she recalls. Now, she’s on the other side of the experience. “Seeing a client’s excitement when they see their dream home come together is so rewarding.”
Jill would love the opportunity to help you find the next home of your dreams. Her office is Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Ambassador Real Estate, located at 774 Olson Drive in Papillion, Nebraska. Celebrating Seniors Setting Goals, Dreaming Dreams
By Linda Barnes
Has there ever been a better time to be a senior citizen? So many medical advances are helping keep seniors healthy. In addition, we are more focused on providing senior-friendly housing, transportation, and social opportunities for our aging loved ones.
As seniors live longer and healthier lives, we all benefit from the wealth of talent and wisdom they embody. With better health, many can volunteer and share their unique abilities. Society also increasingly recognizes and honors their achievements, while intergenerational activities promote better understanding for all.
Mental health concerns that affect seniors are more in the spotlight. We now realize the impact of such issues as social isolation, stress, and depression on the health and well-being of seniors. My community offers an array of educational opportunities that encourage seniors to continue learning and growing.
With all these advances and advantages, what might be preventing an older loved one from achieving some of their new goals and dreams? The CDC recognizes that 80 percent of older Americans are dealing with a chronic condition such as heart disease, cancer, or diabetes. Some of these are related to lifestyle choices in the past, such as tobacco use, poor nutrition, inactivity, or excessive alcohol use. Though the past cannot be changed, it is possible to reduce some of the resulting impacts to quality of life.
Regular medical check-ups can help identify chronic diseases that seniors are prone to develop so they can be treated or

managed. Newer cancer treatments are more senior-friendly, as are the latest heart procedures.
Diabetes management has come a long way since my grandma was diagnosed in the last century. Like many people in her day, she had to track her glucose levels with urine tests and give herself daily insulin injections daily with a syringe. These days, many people with type 2 diabetes can manage their disease with oral medications and careful attention to their eating habits.
Technology now also provides better tools for monitoring blood sugar or delivering insulin, if needed. Some people monitor their glucose levels with a drop of blood and a special meter. Others check glucose levels with an electronic device, placed under the skin, that sends information to their smartphone. Insulin can be delivered with a pen or pump.
Perhaps a senior is fortunate to avoid the chronic health issues associated with aging but is not achieving a good quality of life due to anxiety or depression. The effects of stress, social isolation, or depression can often be managed with self-care, therapy, medication, or a combination of these strategies. Stay connected with your loved ones, and encourage them to reach out. Social

connections are so important that studies show making new social contacts significantly improves physical and psychological well-being.
It is also important to seek help from a medical professional (ideally, one specializing in senior health) if a loved one exhibits signs of depression. They can evaluate symptoms and refer their patient to a mental health professional when needed.
Modest changes in memory or thinking affect many seniors, but research shows that staying active, learning new skills, and maintaining healthy eating habits may be helpful for maintaining or even improving cognitive health. Much research continues to focus on the treatment and prevention of more debilitating memory conditions like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Are you starting to see a pattern? Lifestyle has a significant impact on nearly every facet of aging. Healthy eating, exercise, social connections…what can be done if certain aspects of aging limit a senior’s ability or opportunity to participate in these things?
For those with limitations due to arthritis, physical therapy or newer medications may help. Advances continue to be made in joint replacement. One of our senior family members is looking forward to attending football games again after getting a new hip. Physical therapy has helped him regain strength lost during the months of inactivity before he underwent surgery. A personal trainer is another avenue to improved strength and agility.
Upgrades in the home can help seniors stay in the environment they love. When mobility is affected, ramps can facilitate access. Lifts or in-home elevators can eliminate the need to climb stairs. Safety can be enhanced with a walk-in bath or shower, along with grab bars. Kitchens and bathrooms can be made more wheelchair-friendly. For others, downsizing may be the key to a better life. Find a good realtor who understands the unique needs of senior homeowners.
Seniors can live better lives. Attending a class or joining an exercise group kills two birds with one stone, providing an opportunity to make new social connections while getting some physical activity. Seniors are more able than ever to set new goals and achieve new dreams!

Protections for Your Pet’s Health
Immunizations for a Healthy Life
Becoming a pet owner means taking on the responsibility of keeping our pets healthy. Our pets need us to protect them from the dangers of viruses, bacterial infections, and other pests. The best protection against many of these threats is immunization, and the source for immunizations is your pet’s veterinarian.
Your first role in keeping your pet healthy is to find a vet that both you and your pet like and trust. Pets with different lifestyles and who live in different areas may need protection from different threats. Your vet can help you decide what vaccines are best for your pet and tell you which ones are required by law in your state or municipality.
All dogs and cats should get core vaccines. Your vet can share with you the proper schedule for your pet’s vaccines, but you should generally expect to begin vaccinating when your pet is six to eight weeks old. Annual boosters are often required.
For dogs, core vaccinations include rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and hepatitis. Rabies is a deadly disease of the nervous system, spread most often through the bite of an infected animal. Once symptoms appear, it is almost certainly fatal. Canine distemper is a viral disease that affects a dog’s respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. Parvovirus is an easily transmittable GI disease. Hepatitis, as in humans, affects the liver, kidneys, and other vital organs.
Core vaccines for cats include rabies, calicivirus, feline herpesvirus, and panleukopenia virus. Calicivirus causes upper respiratory infections and oral disease. Feline herpesvirus brings respiratory infections and conjunctivitis. Feline panleukopenia (also called feline distemper) is highly contagious among cats, spreading through urine, stool, nasal secretions, or even fleas. It was once a leading cause of death in cats, but vaccines have made this disease much less prevalent.
In areas where Lyme disease and Leptospirosis are common, preventive measures are necessary to protect against these diseases. As the population increases in metro areas, these two diseases are spreading. Lyme disease, which is spread by ticks, is most common in the northeast, mid-Atlantic, and upper midwestern states. Leptospirosis is most common in moist, tropical climates. It is also common after floods or hurricanes. The decision to administer these vaccines is made based on the ubiquity of the disease in your area and how much time your pet spends outdoors. Your vet will discuss your pet’s lifestyle with you to determine these risks.
By Jackie Byers
While state laws may vary, cats without a vaccination history should generally receive the full series of shots. Most veterinarians recommend booster vaccines every one to three years to keeps pets and owners safe and healthy. This goes for indoor animals, too. Just because your cat or dog doesn’t go outside much doesn’t mean they can’t escape! Even if you take your pet on a leashed walk, they are potentially exposed to the germs of any animals (or animal waste) they encounter. That includes wild animals as well as other people’s pets.
Because they have frequent contact with humans, horses need vaccinations for rabies and tetanus. Show horses need protection because they are with other horses. Large animal vets usually administer these shots. Check with your stable for requirements and veterinary recommendations.
Some states now require shots for animals in petting zoos—a good idea that is not yet universal. Remember: vaccines help keep both animals and humans safe. Your family, your pets, your neighbors, and your neighbors’ pets all deserve the protection of veterinary vaccines.
What can happen if your pet is not vaccinated? Suppose your cat or your dog nips a neighbor’s child. This could result in a period of quarantine for your pet, a series of painful shots for the child, and a lawsuit for you. No thanks!
Several years ago, my neighbor faced this very situation. His dog was playing in its own fenced yard. A neighbor’s child stood at the fence, poking at the dog with a stick. The dog nipped at the stick, and the child, probably thinking this was a fun game, kept poking. Eventually, the dog nipped a fingertip. The dog was taken by officials, and the child endured a painful and expensive treatment. When the lawsuit was settled, my neighbor had to pay for the dog’s incarceration, for the child’s medical treatment, and for emotional damages. It was so much more trouble and expense than a simple annual vaccination!
You and your vet are a team, working together to keep your pets healthy. Vaccines are just another part of the team!

Tan Pants, Blue Button-Down Shirt
60% Stocks, 40% Bonds
By George Morgan
When I was young, I wore tan pants and blue button-down shirts. Now, I’m not so young, and I wear tan pants and blue button-down shirts. I am not recognized as a fashionista, but I get by. Why did I start dressing like this when I was a kid? Because everybody was doing it and it was easy. Why, as an old man, am I still wearing the same outfit? Because it’s easy and I have no incentive to change.
Every week, I talk to dozens of brokers and individual investors, and I spend hours monitoring the financial media. Recently, I have noticed an increase in discussions of the 60/40 investment split (that is, 60% stocks and 40% bonds). This is the investing equivalent of tan pants and a blue button-down shirt. A lot of people are doing it, it’s easy to do, and there is no incentive to change.
When I was a wet-behind-the-ears newbie broker, the 60/40 split was my go-to pitch. Our parents told us not to put all our eggs in one basket. Some stocks and some bonds seemed logical and was therefore an easy sell. Back then, the public’s experience with the stock market was considerably less than it is today. Bonds were considered “safe” investments. A prudent investor wanted to have bonds in their portfolio to protect against the downside.
At that time, we also didn’t have the plethora of mutual funds that we have today. This was especially true on the bond side. Most of the portfolios that my fellow brokers and I put together consisted of individual blue-chip stocks and zero-coupon bonds. These are bonds that can be purchased in small dollar amounts at a discount to their maturity face value. Most are issued by the federal government and are therefore guaranteed safe. The most attractive feature of this approach (to the broker, that is) was that over time, it was certain that the portfolio would become unbalanced. The necessary rebalancing process generated commissions.
The situation in today’s financial services industry is different. Mutual funds are available in every size and shape imaginable, but—and this is a big but—most of them don’t generate commissions. The second part of this equation is the electronic nature of the brokerage firms. Most financial advisors put their clients into electronically monitored robo-accounts. This allows computers to do the rebalancing, with little time or effort required from the broker. For this service, the broker can charge a fee based upon the dollar amount of the client’s assets.
A very wise investor from Omaha has often stated that prudent investors must ignore the scoreboard and monitor the playing field. What does this mean? If you’re looking at the scoreboard, you’re watching what has already happened instead of paying attention to what’s going to happen.
Recently, the mechanical 60/40 rebalancing formula has led to some unintended consequences. Bonds are reasonably safe if you own individual investment-grade bonds and you hold them to maturity. On the maturity date, 100 percent of the principal will be repaid to you.
Using bond mutual funds instead of holding individual
bonds is a game changer. Until recently, we had been in a declining interest rate environment. When interest rates go down, the principal value of a bond goes up. When interest rates are rising, the principal value of a bond goes down. When you are in an actively managed bond mutual fund and your fellow stockholders want to leave the fund, the fund manager has to sell bonds in order to return their cash, even if that sale is at a loss. Over the course of the last few years, this has led to losses in many bond funds.
The mutual fund industry has created their equivalent of the 60/40 split: the target dated fund. As the owner of a target dated funds ages, the stock portion of the fund is reduced and the bond portion is increased. In theory, when the owner reaches retirement age, they should be 100 percent in bonds. Unfortunately, with interest rates on the rise during the past year, target dated funds have suffered the same fate as the computer-monitored accounts discussed above. Sadly, the older investors—those with less time to recoup losses—have experienced the largest declines.
Investing is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. Prudent investing begins with individuals asking (1) what do I expect from my investment, and (2) how much time and effort am I willing to devote to the management of my portfolio? For those seeking modest returns with minimum volatility and effort, a stock/bond split is a viable option. For those who are seeking higher returns, willing to accept greater volatility, and willing to put forth a modicum of effort, an alternate approach is warranted.

Here Comes the Sun! The Enduring Hope of the Sunflower
By Linda Sutherland
Sunflowers are some of the best low-maintenance flowers to have in your garden. With more than 70 different varieties, these amazing annual plants come in a ton of different colors and sizes. Sunflowers are native to North America and are by far one of the easiest flowers to grow. They are pest-resistant and drought-tolerant, and they absolutely love the summer heat and full sun! Most flowers are not that great at surviving in the intense heat of the summer, but sunflowers are up to the task. These beauties possess a skill called heliotropism, which is a behavior in which plants move throughout the day so that they can always face the sun.
How do sunflowers like to be treated? Well, they do not like to be overwatered—they actually will do better with not enough watering than with too much. They possess a long root system that needs space to spread out. If you want average-sized sunflowers, you should space the seeds about a foot apart. If you want the tallest sunflower in all the land, you should think about planting your seeds about three feet apart. And keep in mind that the best place to plant your seeds is along a wall or fence for built-in support. This helps guard against the wind damage they might suffer because of their height .
Sunflowers are categorized into three groups: dwarf, tall and colored. Dwarf varieties grow to be about three feet tall and are always perfect for small spaces. Tall varieties can grow up to 15 feet tall! And because of brilliant hybridization, sun -

flowers now come in a variety of colors.
If you want to create a small forest of sunflowers, Sunforest Mix is your best bet. They can grow between 10 and 15 feet tall and are one of the native types we are used to seeing out in the country. Another very popular variety is the American Giant. These beauties can get up to 15 feet tall and have faces about one foot wide. Their stems are very chunky and sturdy to support the flowers’ heavy heads.
If you want to attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, as well as birds and squirrels, you should plant Russian Mammoth sunflowers. These range from nine to 12 feet tall. A personal favorite of mine is the Italian White sunflower, which has a slightly slender petal. The bees and the butterflies adore these!
Little Becka sunflowers are a gorgeous dwarf variety that

grows to a mere one or two feet tall. The orange “halo” effect on their petals is very striking and would be a beautiful addition to any garden. Another personal favorite of mine is the Teddy Bear sunflower. It has fluffy petals and deep, double yellow blooms. This tiny variety grows only 18 to 24 inches tall. Its double blooms are superbly unique!
A gorgeous and stunning variety is the Moulin Rouge sunflower. They have spectacular burgundy petals that resist fading in the sun. They get about four feet tall. An amazing and eye-catching sunflower is the Strawberry Blonde sunflower. The petals have varying shades of burgundy and pink encircling the dark centers, with ivory to pale yellow tips. Very strong and long-stemmed, they look stunning in bouquets.
The Chianti sunflower is a darling with sunflower aficionados. This beauty has solid red petals on purplish stems. They truly are the color of chianti! Earthwalker sunflowers are autumn-hued flowers that can make a wonderful transition into your fall garden. They have petals with dark earthy hues like red, brown, and gold and can grow between six and nine feet high.
One last variety I’d like to mention is the Solar Flare sunflower. They will beam in your garden with scarlet red petals that brighten to gold at the tips. The center disk is a striking deep black. What an amazing cutting flower!
You should be able to find seeds for the aforementioned sunflowers at your local garden center or nursery, but don’t worry if you have to wait while they order them for you. Sunflowers grow very quickly, and that is another reason to love them.
Sunflowers represent a long life and lasting happiness, as well as good fortune and positive opportunities. That’s not too surprising for anyone who has ever gazed upon one! They also symbolize love and admiration. Consider that sunflowers are literally lifegiving, as they sustain pollinators and provide sustenance for many animals and people, as well. They are often seen as a symbol of faith and devotion, radiating positivity and hope. In Buddhism, sunflowers are considered sacred and represent spiritual enlightenment. What more could you ask for from a flower?

Adult & Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology
Compassionate Care
If you’ve ever needed the care of a urologist or urogynecologist, you know how important it is to find a practice that provides compassionate and attentive care, with physicians and staff who are completely committed to providing quality patient care in a beautiful state-ofthe-art facility. We’ve just described the local practices of Adult & Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology! They have three board-certified urogynecologists on staff, and they are dedicated to providing the ultimate in care.
They offer some of the most innovative urology therapies in the area, including at their state-of-the-art Pacific Surgery Center. Heading up the Pacific Surgery Center is Audrey Person, BSN, RN, CPAN. This dedicated woman oversees every aspect of the facility and the more than 4,800 procedures that are performed there each year.
Audrey was born and raised in Omaha. As a teenager, she was involved in caring for her mother, who had breast cancer. This experience sparked Audrey’s interest in medicine, and she became a CNA while she was still in high school. She later worked in a nursing home, the ICU of a hospital, and then Pre-Op. She fell in love with surgical procedures, and she knew she’d found her calling. The doctors at the Pacific Surgery Center had the excellent vision to see Audrey’s potential, and she has been with them ever since.
The facility is completely and fully owned by the doctors there, and they perform surgical procedures under both local and general anesthesia. One of the advantages of having a procedure accomplished at the Pacific Surgery Center is the greatly reduced cost as compared to a large hospital setting. At the Pacific Surgery Center, there is no compromise of excellent care, and they must meet the same standards that a hospital does. Patients enjoy a lower nurse-to-patient ratio, and the quality of care is excellent. They have a total of nine doctors who operate at this facility, and they will be adding a tenth doctor later this year.
If you have a urological issue that is interfering with the quality of your life, you should definitely seek treatment. It’s vital to receive a proper clinical diagnosis! At Adult & Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology, they often perform a diagnostic procedure known as a cystourethroscopy. This allows for direct visualization of the urethra, urethral sphincter, prostate, bladder, and ureteral orifices. They also use CT imaging, ultrasound, and urodynamics (informative tests regarding the lower urinary tract).
You may be experiencing urinary incontinence, an overactive bladder, or prolapse of the uterus or vaginal wall. These dedicated doctors can treat bladder leaking by
By Linda Sutherland
injecting a bulking agent into the urethra. They can also inject Botox into the bladder wall as a treatment for overactive bladder or urge incontinence. If you’re experiencing prolapse of the uterus or vaginal wall, they can perform anterior or posterior repair. They can also perform a vaginal hysterectomy. Pacific Surgery Center uses a laser to treat kidney stones.
At the facility, they also perform endometrial ablation. This procedure is typically used to treat peri-menopausal woman who are suffering from abnormal bleeding. They can also treat and address female sexual dysfunction and painful intercourse. These types of issues do not get better over time—in fact, they tend to get worse until they are treated. Don’t put it off any longer!
For men, they can perform vasectomies and treat low testosterone levels and erectile dysfunction. They use thermotherapy (that is, heat therapy) to treat urinary symptoms that are caused by an enlarged prostate. In the area of pediatric health, they can perform circumcision, treat cryptorchidism (undescended testicles), and treat pediatric UTIs.
What Audrey loves most about her work at Pacific Surgery Center is when patients compliment her staff. “It gives me so much joy!” she shares. “We have an amazing staff here, and that is what makes us who we are.”
When asked about the best advice she would give someone wanting to go into this field, Audrey notes that the most successful people in surgical services are good at thinking on their feet and realize that they can’t predict what’s going to happen on any given day. “There is never really a typical day here,” she concludes, “but if you love what you do, that will reflect back to your patients.”
Adult & Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology has three locations in the metro area. In Council Bluffs, they’re located at 3434 West Broadway, Suite 102. In Fremont, they’re located at 2735 North Clarkson Street. In Omaha, they’re located at 10707 Pacific Street (this is also the location of the Pacific Surgery Center). Many thousands of people lived their lives in Nebraska. They left no written records, and we don’t know their names or stories. But they left clues. Archeologists are like detectives, finding clues that tell a meaningful and compelling story. “Piecing Together the Past” will take you on an incredible journey through Nebraska’s history, highlighting the clues discovered over decades of searching. The exhibit will also introduce you to the archeologists who have dedicated their careers to exploring the unknown and have helped to tell our state’s unique story. Visit history.nebraska.gov.

Just Say No!
Building
Healthy Boundaries
“No is a complete sentence.” —Anne Lamott
For many of us, it takes a lot of courage to say no. How many times have we found ourselves saying yes to things that we really didn’t want to do or that we just didn’t have time to do? Then, when the task that we volunteered for comes up, we berate ourselves for the commitment(s) we’ve made. Wow…are we having fun yet?
“My philosophy is: If you can’t have fun, there’s no sense in doing it.” —Paul Walker
The ability to say no is the essential first step toward setting boundaries. Setting limits is something that many people in my generation are just now getting up the courage to implement. We were raised to say yes to EVERYONE: family, friends, bosses, even my husband Manny! We were raised to be caretakers who rarely, if ever, thought about our own well-being. We were great at protecting everyone we loved, but we were not so great at looking out for ourselves.
“Daring to set boundaries is about having the courage to love ourselves even when we risk disappointing others.”
—Brené Brown
Making the decision to go down the perilous path of disappointing others is scary. Particularly when it’s your virgin voyage! However,
By Janet Van deWalle
I am learning that setting barriers makes me a stronger, happier, and healthier person. The cool part is that, as I get healthier, I am a better person to be around. The drama decreases tremendously. My stress level is minimal. I find myself more at peace. I smile more. I laugh more. That’s all good!
“When we fail to set boundaries and hold people accountable, we feel used and mistreated. This is why we sometimes attack who they are, which is far more hurtful than addressing a behavior or a choice.” —Brené Brown
It took me quite a long time to realize that it is relatively easy to set boundaries. It’s a whole lot more challenging to follow through with them. Without that vital second step, boundaries are no more than hollow threats that create more drama than you had before.
“Stop asking why they keep doing it and start asking why you keep allowing it.” —Chase Hill
Choose your boundaries carefully. Think them through when you are calm and collected, not when you’re angry or upset. Then state them out loud to those in your circle…and follow through, no matter how scary it may be!
“Boundaries are like fences; they keep out what you don’t want and protect what you value.” —Henry Cloud

Beyond the Vine
Fill Your Life With Color
Rose McCormack, owner of Beyond the Vine, thought all teenagers knew what they wanted to be when they grew up. Many years ago, as a 23-year-old new business owner, Rose was a speaker at a high school career day.“When I asked the group what they wanted to do after high school, most of them looked at me with empty expressions. A kid in the front row stated that no one had the answer to my question. I was amazed!”Rose herself had seen the path to her future at a very young age. That path was literally through greenhouses, flowerbeds, and plants—and it was all in technicolor.
During Rose’s childhood, her mother would take her to local pottery or art classes, museums—anything artsy. “Along the way,” says Rose, “I got a glimpse into my world…the plant store on the corner.” Rose could see her destiny, and she knew it would include flowers. At age 15, Rose began working at the local Brandeis floral shop. “I pursued my dream, earning a floriculture degree from Kansas State University and a business management degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. I worked at various flower shops along the way.”
At age 23, Rose purchased the floral shop where she first worked. By 1987, she had opened a second store at Younkers Crossroads. In 2003, she moved to 130th and Center, and in 2015 she opened the current store—a standalone building close to the Millard library. Almost four decades after that first floral shop, times have changed, but Rose’s commitment to design, attention to detail, and dedication to customer service have not.
The name of the business illustrates the second philosophy—beyond the vine. “Spirituality is very important to us,” says Rose. “Jesus is the vine, and we are merely the branches. As designers, we recognize that we create with the talents given by the creator.”
The third pillar of Beyond the Vine is Mother Nature. “We harness our creative abilities to replicate and honor the gifts that Mother Nature has provided us, including twigs, branches, stems, and silk flowers that portray the glory of color. Everything we sell here, you can find in nature. We bring the outside splendor in.”
Stroll through Beyond the Vine and you see the evidence of a woman who has been perseverant, faith-filled, optimistic, and hard-working. Rose and her staff enjoy connecting with every person who walks through the shop doors. They want you to enjoy the visit and leave with something beautiful.
“Invest in quality silk flowers,” encourages Rose. Imagine the beauty of maintenance-free greenery, crafted to with -

stand the whims and winds of nature. No more re-potting and trimming. These silk flowers are UV-resistant, so those vibrant colors remain bright. Beyond the Vine showcases silks that are realistic, lifelike, and botanically correct. Ann, a customer, says, “I recently purchased a beautiful spring arrangement for my dining room table. It looks so real, my guests were amazed when I told them it was silk.”
Do you have an heirloom vase that you are not sure how to fill? Bring it in, and the team will create a custom bouquet. The staff can create hanging baskets, wreaths, centerpieces, and flowers for a wedding or a memorial. They also offer a variety of furniture, wall hangings, artwork, lamps, artwork, and door décor. “I’m a color girl,” says Rose. “Color is one of the best pick-me-ups. Embrace it, experiment with it. If you are unsure about color or decorating, we would love to help!”
Customer Lisa is grateful for Rose’s help. “Rose helped me choose items for my new home and helped me bring my personality to life! Then she helped me do the same for my dad’s new house. It is all beautiful!”
A recently created area in the store is “Bargain Haven,” where you can find heavily discounted treasures that might be florals or wreaths from previous seasons or home accessories that have been replaced with new merchandise in the main showroom.
Beyond the Vine offers free on-site or in-store consultation. “We take great pride in listening closely to our clients,” Rose says. “Let us help! I promise you will have fun doing it.” Bring in photos of challenging spaces—Rose and her team will find what you need to incorporate beauty, elegance and comfort into that space. “We will select inspiring pieces that will express your style and personality. Furnishings are a clever way for us to express what sparks joy in our surroundings.”
Beyond the Vine (gobeyondthevine.com) is located at 13206 Grover Street, in Omaha. They can be reached at 402991-9221. Business hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. To see more, follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

Anything’s Possible!
Believe in Yourself
What does it look like when you talk to your kids? Do you sit down with them so you’re facing each other when you speak? Do you chat while doing chores together? Do you talk when you’re in the car together? Is most of your contact with the kids through text messages? However or wherever you talk with your kids, they deserve your full attention. How or where you talk with your kids isn’t as important as what you say and how you say it. As parents, I think we should help our kids have confidence in themselves.
Many of the students I had when tutoring just needed to know they could do the work…that they were capable. Janna was having difficulty grasping one of the concepts in an advanced math class. She said, almost in tears, “The teacher told me if I couldn’t get it then I shouldn’t be in the class.” She didn’t have a textbook, only the notes the teacher gave during class. I pulled one of my texts off the shelf and, before opening it, I asked her to show me what they were doing. We then looked it up in my book, and she recognized her problem right off…she had skipped a step. We brainstormed ideas for handling the classwork, and the tears were replaced with a smile.
Bobby came to me, shoulders bent and head down, asking for help in taking a standardized abilities test necessary for

entrance into the military. He’d already taken it a couple of times and had not passed. According to Bobby, his dad had said, “What’s wrong with you? Any idiot can pass that test!” and his recruiter had said, “Just mark ‘C’ for every answer and you’ll do fine.” That didn’t help build Bobby’s confidence at all. I used a practice book for the test and showed him some techniques to find the right answers. We practiced for a few weeks. The next time he came in, he was beaming, with his shoulders and head held high. He had passed!
There are a lot of stories about people disproving those who said something couldn’t be done. The Wright brothers didn’t succeed on their first attempts at flight. Each time they failed, they figured out why and fixed what was wrong. The Little Engine That Could finally made it up the hill, despite the other engines saying he was too small. A positive attitude sure worked for him! Sports psychologists teach athletes to literally visualize success instead of failure. Success takes work.
People have a choice. If you don’t try, you won’t know if you can do it or if you like it. Lack of success doesn’t mean the end. Help the kids believe in themselves. To paraphrase a song in Seussical the Musical: Dream! Imagine! Anything’s possible!

We’ve Come a Long Way, Baby!
Women’s Influence in the Auto Market
Remember the days when men made most of the decisions about vehicle purchases…or all purchases? Maybe you do, and maybe you don’t. Either way, those days are gone. Auto dealers should not underestimate women and their buying power. As a matter of fact, 80 percent of all car-buying decisions are made by women, and 62 percent of cars are now purchased by women. Interestingly enough, women spend over 30 percent more on cars than men.
So, what else is different about the car purchasing habits of men and women? Women tend to prefer non-luxury brands. They are motivated to find cars that are affordable and are known for their durability, reliability, and safety. Studies have shown that women are more likely to prioritize the financial aspects of a vehicle while men seem to be more concerned with the technical features. Additionally, women are much more likely than men to lease a new vehicle. When it comes to vehicles, it seems that women are actually more utility-minded than men…interesting!
The cars that women tend to choose have some commonalities—they are all fairly fuel-efficient, reliable, practical, and pretty high in general performance. In 2023, the top-selling cars for women included the Kia Forte, Honda Fit, Ford Fiesta, Mazda MX-5 Miata, Honda Civic, and the Nissan Versa. It’s no coincidence that all of these vehicles share features that appear to be the most important to women—safety, functionality, and performance.
When it comes to vehicle color, there’s no need for market research to determine which colors are the most popular— you can just drive down the highway and see for yourself. White, black, gray, and silver have been the most popular vehicle colors for many years. This holds true for both male and female vehicle buyers.
What does this information mean for you? If you’re an auto dealer, it means you should never underestimate the decision-making power of the women walking around your dealership. If you’re a buyer, it means you’re ready to establish your own priorities before you exercise that buying power.
The decision to lease a vehicle or buy one should be based on what your future plans are. For instance, if you like a new car every few years, a lease could be the way to go, especially if you anticipate having low mileage. If you take your car on lots of road trips, leasing probably isn’t for you.
Studies have shown that lower monthly payments, lower maintenance costs, and ease of financing all factor into the decision to lease a vehicle. Like many women, I have found
By Linda Sutherland
leasing to be my best option for many years now. I do enjoy having a new car every few years, and I love avoiding the sales tax I would have to pay if I purchased a new car that often. I also have no problem staying within the allotted miles per year. If I need to go on a long road trip, I just rent a car, instead. Leasing is not for everybody, but it has served me well.
If you have decided to take the plunge and purchase a new car, consider selling your present car first instead of trading it in. It is not uncommon for a dealership to offer you $4,000 to $6,000 below market value for your trade. If you sell it yourself, you will have more money in hand to spend on a new vehicle. Of course, it’s less trouble for you to trade in your vehicle; that’s what you’re paying for with the lower market value.
Even though women have more buying power than ever, many of us still feel intimidated when we’re in a vehicle showroom. The solution? Be prepared! Before you go shopping, know what you are looking for and have all your information in hand. Be aware of the safety and durability features you desire, and look up what you should expect in terms of warranties and trade-in value. If you are an educated and informed consumer, you can walk confidently into a dealership. And if the salesperson treats you like a “little lady” instead of an informed consumer, you can feel free to walk right out again, just as confidently.
Yes, we have all heard that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. When it comes to buying power, the distance between men and women is closing fast. It is in the best interests of car manufacturers and dealerships to recognize that their female customers may have different priorities when it comes to purchasing a vehicle.

STATUS Sustainable Luxury Handbags Just For You!
For women whose love of luxury handbags outstrips their budget for accessories, Christi Ballard is nothing short of a dream-maker. At STATUS in Aksarben Village, Christi sells only the very best in pre-loved, high-end bags, sending each bag on its second life with a new owner. It’s luxury at its most sustainable!
Luxury resale includes authentication through Entrupy, a third-party technology that certifies that bags, accessories, and other goods are indeed original. Buyers and sellers can rest assured that their high-value items are the real deal. For Christi, that means building customer trust and extreme satisfaction with a beautiful product.
“I’ve always had a love for luxury handbags,” says Christi, “but I did not necessarily have the money to support that habit. There are just so many bags!” Some of Christi’s personal favorites are the Christian Dior Notebook tote and the Louis Vuitton Speedy bags, and she enjoys helping each customer locate
their own favorites. “We have a catalog of over 5,000 bags,” she notes. “We also source out for a lot of people. They send a picture, and we probably have it.”
By Janette Calabro
During her time as a corporate employee, Christi often rewarded herself with a beautiful bag when she met certain monetary goals. She started her handbag business online more than 20 years ago. The demand for luxury bags and accessories was high. She discovered that once her friends borrowed a handbag, three days later they asked to buy it. Three years ago, she finally opened a brick and mortar store.

Christi Ballard, Owner
“My business is an intentional market of sustainable luxury. I don’t want to convince anyone to buy luxury bags; I want to reach the audience who understands that sustainable luxury is a lifestyle.”
Designer bags are made from a variety of materials, including leather, canvas, exotic skins like crocodile or python, and rare textiles. Visual appeal is the aesthetic that most buyers start with. Once you carry a luxury bag, Christi says, if you take care of it, you’ll likely own it for life. Nowadays, with a husband and three boys, Christi finds that her favorite bags must provide both form and function.
“If I’m going to a game, I know I’m going to have to carry all their items. I want to feel luxurious, but I also want functionality. I want a beautiful tote that will hold everything and be durable.” One of her favorite totes is a canvas Louis Vuitton with leather straps for comfort. Louis Vuitton also makes leather bags, but Christi’s personal experience is that canvas helps the bag to stand up better (no slouching!) and hold more.
Impressed customer Jara says, “This is the store Omaha has desperately needed for the last decade. If you are looking for affordable luxury items, this is the place for you. This is a no-pressure environment with the best cost. Christi Ballard is one of a kind. She finds the bag or clothing item or fragrance that fits you. She is the partner you need in building or rebuilding your bag collection.”
This kind of feedback is music to Christi’s ears. “There are so many things that we want to uncover when a customer
comes in,” she says. “It’s not just about whether the bag is cute. It’s not even always about the brand. It’s about functionality and lifestyle. If I can make it make sense for their lifestyle, then it becomes a need as opposed to a want.”
“The prices are only going to go up,” Christi continues. “Rest assured that a new luxury bag priced at $2,000 will probably increase in the next year or two. At STATUS, you’ll still have bought a beautiful bag because they’re truly preloved—they’ve been very well cared for. We let people know the importance of what they’re investing in.”
Christi sells local products at her store, too, including luxury Telle & Resa candles made by two sisters who live in Omaha. She’s proud to carry a local oil-based unisex fragrance brand called 86 West, as well as locally made fine jewelry by Hériter Gems. Christi is thrilled to share that STATUS now carries 3AM handbags and accessories. These bags are made by Omaha native Jared Hall and are a big hit in Paris and Dubai.
If you’re interested in building a collection of luxury bags, Christi Ballard can get you started at STATUS. She will learn about your lifestyle and uncover what products will serve you. “This is a journey, not just what you need right now,” she concludes. “The ‘why’ makes you a customer for life, invested on a sustainable level.”
Visit STATUS in Aksarben Village at 1917 South 67th Street, Suite 145, in Omaha. To peruse the catalog online, visit mySTATUSlux.com. You can reach the store by phone at 402-915-0262.

Urinary Incontinence
Common and Treatable
One of the most common health problems in the United States is urinary incontinence (UI). More than 13 million people experience this issue. Though it occurs more often as people get older, urinary incontinence isn’t an inevitable consequence of aging. Anyone can have it. In fact, it is estimated that close to 45 percent of women report some degree of urinary incontinence.
Even though it’s common, it can still be embarrassing. The severity ranges from occasionally leaking urine when you sneeze to having an urge to urinate that’s so sudden and strong that you don’t get to a toilet in time.
There are four types of urinary incontinence. With stress incontinence, urine leaks when you exert pressure on your bladder by coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercising, or lifting something heavy. With urge incontinence, you experience a sudden, intense urge to urinate, followed by an involuntary loss of urine.
Overflow incontinence is the frequent or constant dribbling of urine due to a bladder that doesn’t empty completely. Functional incontinence is the existence of a physical or mental impairment that keeps you from making it to the toilet in time. For example, if you have severe arthritis, you may not be able to unzip your pants quickly enough.
As incontinence becomes more severe, it can greatly decrease your quality of life. You might restrict your activities and limit social interactions to avoid embarrassment. It might increase your risk of fall as you rush to the toilet. And it could indicate a more serious underlying condition. If incontinence is affecting your quality of life, it’s important to seek medical advice.
Start by seeing your primary care doctor. You may be referred to a doctor who specializes in urinary tract disorders (urologist) or a gynecologist with special training in female bladder problems and urinary function (urogynecologist). They may ask you to keep a voiding diary (a list of what, when, and how much you drink and urinate). They may also do a urinalysis to check for underlying infection. Additional testing will likely be required if surgery is being considered.
Treatment for urinary incontinence depends on the type of incontinence, its severity, and the underlying cause. If an underlying condition is causing your symptoms, your doctor will first treat that condition. Potential treatments include behavioral techniques, physical therapy, medications, electrical stimulation, medical devices, and surgery.
Behavioral techniques can include bladder training to delay urination, double voiding, scheduling toilet trips, and managing fluid intake. Physical therapy often includes exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles that control urination. This type of therapy is especially effective for stress
By Deborah Daley
incontinence. In addition to patient-guided muscle contractions, electrodes can be temporarily inserted into the rectum or vagina to stimulate and strengthen pelvic floor muscles.
There are a number of medications that treat incontinence. Anticholinergics can calm an overactive bladder and may be helpful for urge incontinence. Mirabegron is used to treat urge incontinence. This medication relaxes the bladder muscle and can increase the amount of urine your bladder can hold.
In men who have urge incontinence or overflow incontinence, alpha blockers relax bladder neck muscles and muscle fibers in the prostate and make it easier to empty the bladder. For women, applying low-dose, topical estrogen may help tone and rejuvenate tissues in the urethra and vaginal areas. This can come in the form of a vaginal cream, ring, or patch.
A urethral insert is a disposable device that is inserted into the urethra before a specific activity that can trigger incontinence. It is removed before urination. The pessary is a flexible silicone ring to insert into the vagina and wear all day.
Injections of Botox into the bladder muscle may benefit people who have an overactive bladder and urge incontinence. Nerve stimulators use painless electrical pulses to stimulate the nerves involved in bladder control.
If more conservative treatments are insufficient, surgery can be considered. The bladder can be surgically supported by placing a sling around it or by attaching the bladder neck to ligaments near the pubic bone. An artificial urinary sphincter can be installed, which closes off the urethra to prevent leakage. When urine needs to be released, it’s done manually by the patient. Your surgeon can explain all these options in full detail.
In women, urinary incontinence is often an after-effect of labor and childbirth. In men, it is often a result of an enlarged prostate. In anyone, it can be caused by a urinary infection, constipation, overindulgence in certain foods or drinks, a urinary obstruction, or a neurological disorder like Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis. Once your physician determines the cause, your treatment can begin, and your life can get back on track!

Sunroom, Screened Porch, or Three-Season
Which Solar-Friendly Addition Is Best for Your Home?
By Anne Yankus
Whether we’re ready or not, summer is here, and we’re all stuck with the perennial problem of how to stay cool and experience the nice weather while it lasts. Fortunately, there are a number of solutions to that. Three of these potential solutions are sunrooms, screened-in porches, and three-season rooms.
For the sake of clarity, let’s hammer out some definitions. A sunroom is an addition to your home, often separated by patio doors or sliding French doors. Its frame and roof are built using the same materials as your home, but all the walls are made of large (often floor-to-ceiling) windows. It is generally insulated and can be used all year.
A three-season room, on the other hand, is an enclosed outdoor living space that can be used for up to three seasons of the year. They are generally not insulated as well as the rest of the house, which is what differentiates them from sunrooms. A screened-in porch, as the name implies, is a porch that has been enclosed on all sides with screens. Because they do not have glass enclosures, they do not protect the space from adverse weather.
As with any home addition visible from the exterior of the home, adding one of these rooms is likely to increase your home’s value and curb appeal. For those of us who aren’t
Tyler Carney, owner, has extensive experience in designing & building high end landscaping projects. This has led to a niche market in the outdoor living market with outdoor kitchens, automated pergolas, powered screens, aluminum decking & more.
StruXure Pergolas—fully automated & custom designed for any space, all-aluminum construction, and louvered roof for shade & water tight when closed. Truly an extension of your home or business.

considering selling any time soon, the creature comforts are usually benefit enough for the addition.
Three-season rooms are additional living space, and not just any space—a room that contains abundant natural light. Having a room with that much natural lighting can also help with your energy bill, since you won’t need to turn on any electric lighting during daylight hours. Three-season rooms and sunrooms are also very versatile. They can be used as a bright, sunny work-from-home office, a scenic dining room for entertaining, or even a second living room with comfy couches and chairs.
Even if you’re completely sold on the idea, there are a few things you should consider before calling the contractors. First and foremost is the new room’s location. You don’t want to bolt on a three-season room just anywhere; take stock of where the sun hits your house the most. A southern-facing room will get more sunlight, keeping it warm on cooler

fall days when it may otherwise be unusable. Accessibility is another thing to consider, especially if you plan to sell your home someday. Having a room that doesn’t require a step down or up to enter is more accessible to a wider range of family and friends (as well as subsequent owners). Ceiling height is another factor to think about, as it can affect potential access to skylights or room for ceiling fans that you may wish to install. Screened-in porches, however, are a much simpler affair. You can convert your existing porch or build a brandnew one, and there are several different types of screening to choose from. Fiberglass is a popular and inexpensive option that is great for keeping out pests but can be damaged by sharp objects or UV rays. Vinyl-coated polyester is a step up in both price and durability but comes at the cost of lower visibility due to the thick vinyl coating.
Aluminum screens are not as pricy as vinyl and are excellent at standing up to wind, but they can be easily dented and do not fare well in coastal climates. Brass and copper are more expensive and more durable than aluminum but have the same drawback in coastal areas and will fade in color over time. Stainless steel can stand up to salty sea spray and is more comparable to vinyl in terms of price, but it does have some sun glare issues.
Once you’ve nailed down all the elements you want to include and you’ve picked out a good spot, it’s time to call a contractor. Hiring a contractor, as we’ve mentioned many times before, is never a one-and-done kind of call. You’ll want to ask questions of every contractor you consider. How long has the company been in business? How long has it been operating in your municipality? Do they have a good reputation? Are they licensed and insured? Checking with friends and neighbors for recommendations always helps, as does reading online reviews and consulting the Better Business Bureau.
Having a summer-friendly room where you can recharge your solar batteries without having to leave home is a perfect reason to start this project. It will continue to pay off in years to come.

Garage Makeovers
Maximizing Functionality
When you think of your home’s garage, what comes to mind?
Is it organized, or do you have difficulty getting to or finding items you need?
The garage is often home to various household items, like tools, lawn and garden supplies, sports equipment, holiday decorations, and seasonal furniture. In extreme cases, there may not even be room for the thing it was built for—your car! If you have a cluttered garage and would like to end the chaos, you’ll have to do a little work yourself before making room for the pros.
Before selecting a garage storage system, it is essential to sort through the clutter. Divide items into separate piles, such as keep, sell, donate, and toss. Get rid of items that are no longer being used. Sort similar items into groups so you can eliminate duplicates and keep like items together. Next, consider what you want your garage to do for your household. Do you have specific needs like a workbench, tool chest, or a place for bicycles and other sports equipment? Identifying what you need to store will help you select options that best fit your needs.
Consider vertical storage to remove floor clutter. Using wall space frees up floor space, which is where you want to park your car. Vertical organizing systems include pegboards, track-based systems, and panelized systems. These systems use hooks, shelves, and organizers to maximize the use of space. Other options include storage cabinets, benches with storage, and stackable bins. Consider specialized storage systems like bike racks with shelves and sports equipment storage. High shelves are an option for items that are not used frequently.
Once you’ve got some idea of what you’re hoping to achieve, it’s time to call in the storage system professionals. These companies will learn about your needs, talk you through your options, and then carefully measure and build or install the storage systems that will make your garage a place you enjoy.
Garages often double as workshops or spaces for crafting, exercise, or entertaining. Stain-resistant flooring can upgrade a garage’s appearance and handle spills and leaks. Before selecting garage flooring, think about how the garage is used. What is important? Aesthetics? Durability? Longevity? Understanding your needs will help you choose the best option for your garage.
Epoxy flooring consists of a resin and polyamine hardener, which may be poured or troweled over a concrete floor. Epoxy is durable, stain-resistant, and easy to clean and maintain. After installation, it may take a few days to cure. A second coat or a coat of urethane sealer provides extra durability. Depending upon floor traffic, floors may need to be recoated every three to five years.
Penetrating concrete sealers provide a more natural look. They seal the pores in concrete, creating a chemical barrier against moisture and stains. This type of sealer is usually
breathable, allowing moisture to escape.
By Angella Arndt
Polyurethane sealants form a layer on top of concrete, providing a glossy look and significant protection. These chemical and abrasion-resistant sealants work well in high-traffic or multi-functional garages.
Concrete stain is a translucent coloring that absorbs into concrete and provides a marbled appearance that resembles natural stone. Applying a urethane sealer after the stain dries will protect the floor against moisture and chemicals. Depending upon floor use, the sealer may need annual waxing. The stain may need a touch-up and resealing approximately every two years.
Polyaspartic coatings are made of resin. The material bonds to the concrete, providing durable insulation. This coating is resistant to chemical abrasion and erosion but not strong acids. However, moisture in the concrete may prevent the coating from bonding with the floor.
Depending on the style of your home, garage doors can be up to 30 percent of your home’s front exterior. A new door can add a lot of curb appeal. Garage doors are available in a variety of styles, materials, and colors. Styles range from basic doors with a frame-and-panel design to custom carriage-type doors. The most popular materials include steel, wood, and plastic.
An insulated garage door is a good option for those in the Midwest. Insulation reduces cold, lessens noise, and is less susceptible to denting. A weather seal between the garage door and the floor helps keep dirt, water, debris, and pests outside.
An organized garage is visually appealing and provides other benefits. In addition to maximizing storage, it can become a multi-functional space where you can park cars, work on projects, or entertain friends and family. Organizational professionals can help you select and install options that suit your lifestyle and needs.

Let’s Get Real
Authenticity Breeds Connection
Have you ever met someone and immediately connected with them? You’re introduced at a business meeting, or at a social outing, and find yourself in a deep conversation that can go on for hours. It’s only happened to me on a few occasions. It is such a gift! These people are my dear friends to this day…even though a couple of them met me decades ago. We may not see each other for months on end, but when we do carve out time together, we flow right back into our relationship as if we had seen each other a week ago.
I’ve been reflecting on what creates these types of friendships, and I’ve found a common denominator. All of my dearest friends are totally authentic. There is no pretentiousness, no insincerity, no hypocrisy. I am not trying to figure out if they have a hidden agenda. They are real. They are comfortable in their own skin. We trust each other implicitly.
“Authenticity can’t be replicated or faked. You’re either real or you’re not.” —Bibi Bourelly
Living our lives authentically…being who we really are…is a priceless gift that we give to ourselves and to everyone we encounter. Faking it…pretending to be someone we are not…is painful.

Giving ourselves permission to share our true selves with our true friends is liberating.
“If there’s one message I want people to take away, it’s never compromise being your authentic self. Even if that means making others uncomfortable.” —Halima Aden
When we begin to behave like our truly authentic selves, it can be uncomfortable for those in our circle of family and friends. Please understand that being authentic does not mean that we become rude or disrespectful. On the contrary, by being truly authentic with those we love, we will give our relationships the opportunity to thrive and grow into something so much more. Being fake with those we love is a travesty.
When we become authentic, it may take time for those in our circle to “come around,” but if we keep it up, they will eventually understand how much they mean to us. They will realize that we want the same authenticity from them. And that is a gift that will leave a legacy that being fake could never achieve.
“Authenticity is the alignment of head, mouth, heart, and feet—thinking, saying, feeling, and doing the same thing— consistently.” — Lance Secretan
