Publisher’s Notes
Let’s Celebrate! Welcome to our 36th Anniversary Issue! I launched Women’s Edition back in 1986 as a way to help local businesses reach out to women. Back then, research showed that women made or influenced 80 percent of all buying decisions. Thirty-six years later? It’s up to 85 percent. It’s been quite the ride. When I talk to people about this anniversary issue, I find myself shaking my head in disbelief every time I say 36 years. It has gone by so quickly it astounds me. There have been so many life changes over the last 36 years, personally, locally, and nationally. What we hear from our readers is how much they appreciate the positive tone they have learned to expect from Women’s Edition. When I started, I wanted this magazine to be a place where our readers could go to relax. I wanted them to feel better after reading us than they did before they picked us up. I hear from you that we are still succeeding in that goal. I also hear that many of you have discovered your favorite boutique and service businesses through reading us every month. Those are the reasons we keep doing it! Roxy Orr has been with me for 34 of those 36 years. She is a terrific friend and the two of us make a great team. Over the years, we have had the joy of meeting so many of our amazing readers and supportive advertisers. Again and again, these interactions have shown us what a terrific community Omaha is. The landscape of Omaha has changed, but the people remain an excellent representation of what a great city can be. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Keep picking us up and letting our advertisers know how you found them, and we’ll keep going! I am hoping that, by the time this issue comes out, we will have broken the cold weather that has been here most of this spring. The last few weeks have been getting to people… the dreary gray is wearing people down. I’ve lived here my whole life, and it is truly a rarity to have it be so gloomy for so long. We love the sun here in Nebraska, and I’m betting it’s going to come out pretty darn soon. The forecast is calling for 90s! On a final note: Happy Father’s Day to all those dads out there, especially that one very special man…my husband, Manny! See you next month!

French Toast Sticks Cut 4 slices of bread into“sticks”(or fry whole slices of bread and cut into sticks afterwards). Mix together 2 eggs, 1/4 cup of milk, and a dash of salt. Whisk well. Heat 2 Tablespoons of butter in a skillet. Dunk the bread into the milk mixture and fry in the skillet, turning until golden brown. Mix 1/4 cup of sugar with 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. When the toast pieces are done, dunk them into the cinnamon mixture and turn to coat. Serve with syrup, fruit, jams, and hot honey. Keto Egg Casserole Spray the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Put 1 cup of chopped and cooked ham or crispy pieces of bacon in the dish. Add 1–2 cups of shredded cheese, along with chopped veggies like squash, zucchini, tomatoes, spinach, arugula, onion, mushrooms—whatever you like. Season with minced onion, salt, pepper, and garlic. Cut an 8-ounce block of cream cheese into cubes and sprinkle over the veggie mix. Mix 10– 12 eggs with 3/4 cup of whipping cream. Pour over the veggie mixture. Fashion Worthy
Here Comes the Sun! Simple Summer Fashion
By Holly Bell
Summer is upon us! It’s time to enjoy all the blessings of warm weather—flowers, warm breezes, dining alfresco, and, of course, lightweight colorful fashions. Color is on point this year, with gorgeous, brilliant shades of blue, including Pantone’s color choice for the summer, Very Peri. I love blue because it looks great on everyone, but I am also excited about saturated yellow, classic kelly green, and sunset orange for the summer palette. Somehow, dressing in bright colors just feels right this year. It feels optimistic, happy, and positive! This year, many of our classic favorites are back. The number one classic is the white cotton t-shirt. We should all purchase a couple of new ones every year so we’ll look fresh and not washed out from over-laundering. Pick the style that is right for you. My preference is one with elbow length sleeves, a V-neck, and a semi-fitted body that ends right below my waist. You would be surprised how many cuts, styles, and shapes a simple white t-shirt comes in! Once you’ve found your favorite cut, make sure it is mostly cotton, as that is the coolest and softest fabric for summer. This white tee will take you everywhere all summer, as it looks as hip with jeans as it does with a beautiful long skirt. Adding to this classic look is a pair of white sneakers. The most important thing about white sneakers is to keep them spotlessly clean. Leather is easy to wipe clean, while fabric is easy to throw in the wash. These are musthave items for every summer! On-trend looks for summer 2022 include one of my favorites: wide leg pants made of thin, flowy fabrics. This look can be worn by everyone, but it’s important to keep some styling suggestions in mind. The pant needs to be longer, with the back almost grazing the floor. I like these pants with a little platform or at least a one-inch heeled sandal rather than with a completely flat shoe. To balance the full bottoms, you need a more fitted look on top. Here is where the white tee can come in, either tucked in and belted or just partly tucked in. Patterned pants are adding pizazz this summer in this wider cut. 10
June 2022
www.womensedition.com
Of course, the skinny cut pant still has a place in your summer closet, along with the bottom flare that has regained popularity. Want to travel light for a weekend trip with just a carry-on? You can do it! Top items to pack would be the white tee and sneakers, along with the flowy pants and a pair of sandals. Add a simple summer dress that can be accessorized for the evening or worn casually around the pool. Put in a pair of sweats and a hoodie in case evenings get cool, along with a beautiful scarf to throw over your shoulders in an overly air-conditioned restaurant. Don’t forget that brimmed summer hat and sunglasses! Just in time for summer vacation, designers have reinstated the Maxi Shopping Bag. Oversized handbags work great for those of us who are on the go all day! Here’s a fashionista hint: carry a small billfold with a strap inside, just in case you don’t want to lug the big guy around all evening. Accessories can elevate any summer outfit and make you look put together. Retro feelings are fun this year, featuring gold chain belts. Chanel started this trend eons ago, and it is a classy look that can really dress up an outfit. Statement gold earrings and simple chain necklaces are also classic additions to your summer accessory wardrobe. Look for something unusual and striking. Hoop earrings are always a trend for summer and offer a breezy, carefree vibe. Don’t forget a hat. It’s as important as ever to take care of your skin in the sun, and wearing a hat is a great way to elevate your outfit and keep you sun smart. The bucket hat has been resurrected! The stylish, Gucci-inspired large-brimmed hat is a classic. For casual outings: the baseball cap. All of these should find a way into your summer wardrobe. Wearing a hat is a great

Summer has arrived, and cozying up to a warm fire may be the last thing on your mind. Imagine, for a moment, that it is a blustery winter morning, the coffee is brewing, the weather outside is frightful…and you have no push-button gas fireplace to sit in front of because you didn’t start the process while the weather was still warm! With a gas fireplace insert, you can have instant warmth at the touch of a button, all winter long. A Woman’s Work
Heroes and Strangers The Lives of Dads
By Sharon Knierim
Some of us are fortunate enough to have grown up with fathers who were seriously committed to parenting. These men who we treasured as the leaders of our families typically sought to be paragons of virtue, hard workers, and dispensers of all kinds of wisdom, guiding us toward our own adulthood. Many modern dads jump right into the role of fatherhood by changing diapers, providing bottles, and crawling out of bed for that much-dreaded 2 a.m. feeding. Not so long ago, this was unheard of. Today, the bonding between father and child seems to begin earlier than it did in the past. Expectant fathers are very often involved in the prenatal aspects of pregnancy and in childbirth…which used to be a singular journey for a motherto-be and her unborn child. Today, however, we see soon-to-be papas at birthing classes and assisting in the labor and delivery of their own children. Many of today’s dads are as familiar with their children’s inoculations and school grades as their counterparts and are often involved in daily activities with their offspring. No longer are children strangers to their father, wandering in and out of his life like actors in a stage play.
Growing up, we learn all the good things about our dads. We learn to understand and appreciate their strengths. We focus on their good qualities. Whether they project a John Wayne–like persona or a likeness to Atticus Finch, we love our dads. A father is often the rock that holds an entire family together. Beyond providing a major income for the family, his very presence is reassuring for every member of the brood. Typically, after being under our dad’s wing for at least 18 years, we come to value and welcome his talents and very presence. In essence, as we grow and mature, Dad becomes our hero. He is the one who can solve problems. He is the one we come to for advice and counseling. We often seek his approval, above and beyond the approval of all others. This feeling is

not to be confused with adoration or adulation…it’s a form of respect that grows, over the years, into something almost tangible. Somewhere along the route to our own adulthood, we begin to pick up little hints that Dad may have been someone else in his earlier life. It usually begins with a slip of the tongue by a friend or relative who shared Dad’s youth. We learn about activities that we cannot fathom our own fathers taking part in. Does Dad have a split personality? Did he really dance on tables or pull pranks that we would never dare to try? Can it be possible that Dad was once involved with a woman other than Mother? Well, hang on to your hats, girls. Dad probably doesn’t have a split personality, but he did have a life before his chicks were born. Everybody deserves his or her own youth. When we are young, we experiment and learn from our own mistakes. Youth is the time to be free of encumbrances and many responsibilities. When we are young, many of us are focused on ourselves and our friends. We are strangers to who we later become. Some people call this “getting it out of our systems.” Just as we ourselves had more fun than should be legal, so it was with our fathers. It can be a shock to discover that dear old Dad wasn’t always the guy who took us camping or made sure we had our allowance. Before taking on his role as head man of the family, Dad had to grow up, and part of growing up is branching out. So, can a dad be a hero and a stranger at the same time? The answer is a resounding: YES, HE CAN. After all, who would want a dad who had been nothing but utterly responsible all his life? All people are multifaceted and live lives that include all kinds of experiences. These experiences make us who we are today. These experiences allow us to make decisions and to understand what our lives are all about. So, if you see your father gazing off into the distance with a wistful or melancholy look on his face, allow him that time. After all, he might be remembering a young man who used to be so familiar and now seems like a stranger. When he comes back to the present, take the time to let him know how much you appreciate him. After all, even heroes need a pat on the back from time to time.

Vantage Point
Quest Forward Academy Innovative, Personalized Learning
By Angella Arndt
Parenthood is a rewarding part of life for many people. Raising a child to adulthood is a unique experience full of love, joy, pride, hopes, and dreams. As children enter their teens, they look forward to becoming independent and pursuing their dreams. Have you thought about where your child will attend high school? Have you explored all of the local options available? If you would like your child to experience a personal, individualized educational journey designed to prepare them for the future, consider Quest Forward Academy. Quest Forward Academy is a four-year high school located on the Bellevue University campus. They focus on active, project-based learning that is personalized to meet the goals and interests of individual students. Students have access to resources on the Bellevue University campus, such as a stateof-the-art science laboratory, library, and art studio. Mentoring and coaching are essential components of the student experience at the Academy. Sarah Earnest, Assistant Director and High School Counselor, joined Quest Forward Academy in 2017 as one of its founding teachers (known as mentors) and was promoted to her current position in 2019. Sarah had always wanted a career with meaning and a sense of purpose, so she became a teacher with the goal of becoming a counselor. Sarah earned her undergraduate degree at Dordt University in Sioux Center, Iowa, and her master’s degree in school counseling from the University of Nebraska Omaha. She spent several years as an educator before joining the Academy. She was drawn to the Academy because of the individualized teaching method. Quest Forward Academy’s approach involves research-backed strategies for learning. Sarah explains that the Academy focuses on meeting the needs of 21st-century learners. “The world is constantly changing, and we prepare students for the new world of work,” she says. “Quality education involves adaptability, flexibility, a growth mindset, and critical thinking skills. We want students to apply information instead of memorizing answers.” Students participate in active learning as opposed to traditional lectures. Sarah maintains that learning requires action and activities to keep students engaged. “I cannot teach students how to work for the next 40 years, but I can teach them skills to meet the demands of the future. We teach learners how to learn.” Quest Forward Academy provides a more personalized educational experience than traditional high schools. Class sizes are limited to 16 students, allowing mentors to individualize each students’ learning experience and to develop strategies commensurate with a student’s learning style. Flexibility in pacing means that students learn in ways that match their skills. The student-centric approach encourages students to make choices and be creative in the learning process. Assignments may be modified to meet individual learning preferences for successful outcomes. 18
June 2022
Sarah notes that Student and Sarah Earnest, parents and students choose Quest Assistant Director and High Forward Academy for various reasons. School Counselor Students believe they are better served in a smaller environment with the uniquely personalized teaching approach. The small, private community allows students to focus on their studies. The educational process meets students where they are and fosters their growth. The Academy also provides extracurricular activities. Many competitive activities, such as speech, debate, and one-act, et-cetera are housed in-school. Cooperatives with other area private schools are being finalized to provide more sports opportunities, like football, track, and more. Often, people make assumptions about the type of student that attends a private or independent school. Sarah emphasizes that the Academy has a diverse student population with respect to backgrounds and goals after graduation. Students come from all areas of Omaha, and the Academy offers scholarships and transportation solutions. Sarah encourages parents and students to attend an open house or set up an appointment to see if the Academy would be a good fit. Students have access to the Pathways Program and Network designed to help students during and after high school. This program helps students plan their path for after graduation, whether they are interested in a career education, the military, or beginning a career at the conclusion of their high school tenure. Events throughout the year include hosting guest speakers, networking opportunities, and panel discussions on topics like financial literacy, professionalism, and health and wellness. One-on-one coaching helps students meet goals, identify resources, overcome challenges, and explore career options. The program also helps with internships, work opportunities, resources for employment, and partnering students with industry expert mentors. Sarah enjoys watching students mature and find their passion. “Our process allows our students to gain confidence, grow their skills, and thrive. It is gratifying to help our students launch their plans so they can pursue their dreams.” Quest Forward Academy is located on the campus of Bellevue University, at 1000 Galvin Road South, in Bellevue. Business hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For more information, please call 402-403-1267 or find them online at omaha.questforward.academy.

Waterfalls, Fountains, and Fire—Oh, My! Delightful Backyard Features
By Janette Calabro
Whether you plan to bask in the backyard sun or entertain guests at twilight (or both!), outdoor water features, firepits, and fireplaces are hot investments for 2022. This year, enhancing your outdoor staycation space creates a happy place under the sun or the stars. Upgrade your refuge with water features such as fountains, waterfalls, ponds, and other earthy wonders like winding creeks or streams. Not only do these features provide respite and calm, they also beautify your space and increase the value of your property. Cook, relax, and entertain by the firepit or fireplace for that extra connection to nature. To get started, consider hiring a landscape designer to help manifest your dreamscape and oversee the project. The pros can navigate building permits, too, if any are needed. Ask your designer for photos of finished work and testimonials from happy customers. A landscaper may need a license along with proof of insurance for certain construction projects, although state requirements vary. Water fountains, whether simple or grandiose, are all the rage this year. While stone fountains are always popular, fountains come in many sizes, designs, and materials. Sculpted stones turn fountains and waterfalls into art—imagine a bubbling boulder under your favorite tree, illuminated by lights at night. Unsculpted stones are popular, too, made from materials like weathered limestone, sponge boulders, or sandstone. Plant flower beds or lush green plants around your water features for contrasting texture and visual appeal. Keep in mind that lightweight tabletop fountains often don’t require any special plumbing, and many fountains simply plug in. Ideas are endless, so dive into your creative side. Try a cast stone concrete Zen frog with a three-prong cord (no plumbing required) to gather attention and a few smiles. Fountains over 100 pounds will need to be set by an installer or designer. In the winter, you simply drain the water and cover, making sure you bring the pump indoors. If water bouncing from copper flower blossoms isn’t enough whimsy for you, try an imitation (fiberglass) bamboo rock waterfall with built-in LED lights or a colorful garden gnome. If you’re looking for something extraordinary, add a fire fountain to combine fire and water in a resin bowl. This type of fountain usually runs on simple paraffin fuel, so it’s best to get installation help, and be sure to store it indoors for winter. For fountains that won’t be moved inside for winter, drain the basins before the water freezes—that can crack the structure. Wall fountains are popular this year, too. Just as the name suggests, these fountains are usually placed against a wall, and they require professional installation along with winter care. Cast-stone ceramic wall fountains often recirculate the water, which is good for drought-prone areas and care-free plumbing. In a more formal area, you and your guests will love the lion-faced cast-resin wall fountain. A casual but breathtaking design is a winding vine fountain that falls in multiple directions. Don’t forget there are also floor fountains, like a flowing bird bath. Just be sure to get help from 20

your designer and don’t forget to winterize. Whether your fountain cascades, rains, bubbles, or streams, hire a contractor for the bigger jobs. A landscaper or designer will dig a level footing once you decide together where your feature should sit. A layer of stone pavers or crushed stone helps secure the base. Next, your landscaper will hire an electrician to install a protected outlet and the pump. You don’t have to travel to exotic places to bask in the splendor of sunlit waterfalls. Instead, hire a landscaper to install one for everyday visual appeal and relaxation in your own backyard. Consider the ever-popular boulder falls, often metal structures that are more resistant to rust and corrosion. Try a copper wall for an antique look. If you have limited space, a small waterfall is more personal and just as soothing. You could even transform concrete steps thorough your garden into a breathtaking waterfall! If you have the space, multiple bodies of water in the backyard can include a pond or two, connected by waterfalls that are sized to your liking. You can fill the corners of your garden with water features, too, no matter how far they are from the house or garage. Most waterfalls are powered by water pumps and electricity, but if there’s no easy access to electricity, experiment with solar-powered falls (solar panels). They’re eco-friendly, and they’ll save time and trouble. Give your oasis a boost with a creek! A soothing creek creates calm, adds interest to your yard, and buffers noise pollution. Your landscaper can build a winding creek or a short one, depending on your space and taste, using concrete, gravel, PVC pipe, and a recirculating pump. Stones, rocks, and boulders strategically placed will guide the water to a retaining pool and then pump it back to the top of the creek. Genius! Next, let’s talk fire features. Chances are great that your outdoor space needs a focal point, a warm ambiance for cooler nights and fond memories. Make your fire pit the centerpiece for outdoor gatherings or your own quiet reflection. Choose from the portability of a freestanding wood-burning firepit or the permanence and stability of an in-ground piece that burns wood or gas. Don’t forget to get creative with the space around the pit. For example, assemble smoothed-out tree stumps or flat boulders for natural seating. Be sure to spruce up hard seats with weatherproof cushions, and use cushy pillows for comfortable chairs, too.

Stark Media Films Everybody has a story just waiting to be told. What’s your story? Stark Media was born out of a six-year stint as IT/desktop support for a large credit card processing company. I then stumbled onto an opportunity to make “videos” for that same company. I said yes. My role was to produce in-house corporate marketing videos. Having no real experience as a videographer, I had to adopt the “fake it ‘til you make it” mentality...and it worked. Fast forward three years. The excitement was missing, I was yearning for more meaningful projects. I became complacent and uninspired. Although it did put food on the table, I yearned to produce something with more impact and meaning. Then along came another opportunity to help produce a short film about Alzheimers. That changed the game for me. This is what I was reaching for. Real stories, real people who inspire and provoke viewers. It was the most challenging endeavor I had done at the time. Understanding how to tell a strong story in the least amount of time, and how to engage the viewer for the duration of the piece, is not easy. Our purpose is to make something powerful, moving, and memorable. Recently, we produced a “Memory” video for a retired couple. Their story was captivating and powerful.
“I have turned my passion into my profession and that is helping people live longer lives without pain and suffering.” NUCCA is a gentle, specific correction in the upper neck that takes the pressure off of the brainstem so that it and the entire nervous system can function properly.

Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine Bringing Hope to the Fertility Journey
By Linda Sutherland
The stress and heartache that come with infertility are real and can create a feeling of hopelessness. There is a place where hope is alive and well for couples struggling to conceive, and that place is the Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine. The team at the Heartland Center is dedicated to finding the right treatment for each individual patient, and their compassionate work has made all the difference in many lives and many types of families. The Heartland Center offers many different options and treatments to address the various causes of infertility. One such treatment is in vitro fertilization (IVF). This is an assisted reproductive process in which eggs are retrieved from the ovarian follicles and then fertilized with sperm in a laboratory setting. After a few days have passed, the healthiest embryos are transferred to the patient’s uterus. Hopefully, at least one embryo grows to become a successful pregnancy. Artificial insemination is a technique that can be appropriate treatment whether the cause of the infertility stems from a male partner or a female partner. In this procedure, sperm is introduced directly into the uterus, which can help avoid any obstructions and shorten the path for the sperm. Because the sperm can come from a male partner or a sperm donor, artificial insemination can be a good solution for women who have no parenting partner or who partner with another woman. Compared to some of the other infertility techniques, the cost of artificial insemination is relatively low, and it comes with very few side effects. The Heartland Center has three top-notch reproductive endocrinologists as well as IVF nurse practitioners and laboratory technologists who are all dedicated to helping their patients reach the outcome they desire. One of these board-certified reproductive endocrinologists is Stephanie Gustin (MD, FACOG). Dr. Gustin grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska, and attended the University of Nebraska for her undergraduate education. This passionate and highly dedicated woman was inducted into the Mortar Board National Senior Honor Society, which recognized her for her leadership, service, and scholarship. Of course, it goes without saying that she graduated with high honors. Dr. Gustin went on to attend medical school at Georgetown University School of Medicine, where she also met her husband. Once she was ready for her residency, she attended Stanford University Hospital, training in obstetrics and gynecology. She completed her fellowship at Stanford, as well, in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Dr. Gustin works with pretty much every aspect of infertility, but she has a special interest in recurrent pregnancy loss and reproductive genetics. 24

Recurrent miscarriage is a devastating condition that can really leave couples feeling Dr. Stephanie Gustin, that all hope is lost. The fact is that miscarriages MD, FACOG can be caused by many different things, including genetic disorders or persistent medical conditions. The team at the Heartland Center is dedicated to finding the root of the problem. They will explore all the options and find the answers that are needed to move forward with the best chance for a successful pregnancy. Dr. Gustin loves to see “her patients, the individuals or couples who present to me after months or even years of infertility finally realize their dream of parenthood.” There are many options for people who are struggling to have a family, and she is grateful that she can help guide them on their journey. Sometimes, people hope to conceive later in life but are facing an illness or treatment that might affect their ability to do so. In other cases, people simply want to preserve their fertility so they can start a family even after they’ve passed the ideal age for conception. The Heartland Center can help with these issues, too. Men and women can seek fertility preservation with different options, including a technique of cryogenically preserving tissue that allows it to remain viable for extended periods of time. Egg donation is also supported at the Heartland Center. This very special calling allows hopeful parents to experience parenthood when they otherwise would not have been able to. The Heartland Center offers world-class care to all who come to their facility, and they have some very exciting news to share about that facility’s expansion! This summer, they will be opening a clinic in Lincoln. The same qualified doctors serving patients in Omaha will be helping people in the Lincoln area to realize their dreams of building a family. The new clinic will be located in southeast Lincoln, and what a welcome addition it will be! The Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine offers so many options to help patients create the families they have always wanted. French River Cruise
#1 Destination for Wine Lovers
By Jackie Williams
Wine lovers, rejoice! I have found the ultimate trip for you. It involves visits to picturesque historic villages, fine food and wine, a valley of vineyard after vineyard, fun and interesting tours, wine tasting, and more wine tasting. Did I mention wine? You can experience all of this as you float the Rhone River on a French river cruise. The next few months are the perfect time to go. Good Looks
A Wrinkle Road Map Prevention and Treatment
By Loretta McCollum
Wrinkles are a natural part of aging, but that doesn’t mean your face has to look like a topographical map, and you don’t have to settle for hands that resemble well-worn leather. You don’t have to let your wrinkles define you. It’s important to recognize the common causes of wrinkles so you can take steps to minimize their development. Sun exposure is a common culprit. The sun’s UV rays cause free radicals to form in our skin layers, damaging elastin fibers and promoting wrinkles. Always use a good sunscreen, and don’t forget to put it on your hands. Smoking also causes skin to age prematurely—another great reason to avoid it. Diet is also related to wrinkle production. Processed foods prevent your skin from being as supple as it could be. Nutrient-rich foods like protein, fish, and fresh fruits and vegetables contain the vitamins and minerals needed to help keep your skin soft. Drink lots of water! Collagen is the primary connective tissue in the skin, and it’s mostly water. Skin that is dehydrated looks less plump, making those lines and creases more visible. Stress can also make you look older than your years. When you’re stressed and fatigued, your body releases more of the hormone cortisol, which is known to cause premature aging. While you’re sleeping, your body produces HGH (human growth hormone), stimulating cell growth. Of course, fine lines and wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process, so it’s impossible to avoid them entirely. Maybe you
don’t even want to! After all, wrinkles are an indication of where smiles have been. However, we all want to look our best, and there are several ways to minimize those fine lines and wrinkles. Prescription medications containing vitamin A derivatives called retinoids may reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and roughness. These topical creams typically show results after a few weeks. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that protects the skin from the free radicals that break down skin cells and cause wrinkles. Alpha hydroxy acids exfoliate the skin and stimulate cell growth. Laser therapy uses light energy to repair and regenerate skin cells. The laser transmits photons into the skin’s membranes, increasing collagen production. It also increases blood circulation. This is a good option for the forehead, mouth, and eye areas. Two common types of laser therapy are CO2 laser treatment and erbium laser treatment. CO2 therapy uses short pulses or continuous light beams to remove thin layers of skin with minimal heat damage. Recovery generally takes about two weeks. Erbium laser resurfacing is designed to remove both surface and moderately deep lines on the face, hands, neck, or chest.

Bathroom Remodeling Top Bathroom Design Trends
By Robyn V. Powell
If a home remodeling project is in your future, you may want to place a bathroom remodel at the top of your wish list! Housing experts name bathroom remodels as one of the best renovation projects to enhance your lifestyle and increase your home’s resale value. Many people no longer see the bathroom as simply a utilitarian room but as a more experiential space, which has led homeowners everywhere to transform their bathrooms into stylish personal sanctuaries. If you love indulging in the kind of pampering found at luxurious spas, why not bring that wonderful sense of well-being into your home? Whether your remodel is designed to enhance your lifestyle or with an eye toward resale, you can expect to recoup an average of two thirds of your investment on a bathroom remodel. According to HGTV, the typical buyer is looking for an upgraded master bath, a family bathroom, and a half bath for guests. For the biggest ROI, look to new tile, updated cabinets and fixtures, and brighter, more natural lighting. Current tile trends include eye-catching designs like hexagon, diamond, Moroccan, and chevron. While lighting may seem like a minor part of a bathroom remodel, lighting fixtures can impact the overall appearance of the entire space. Dim, outdated lighting can leave your bathroom looking drab, even after an expensive makeover. Consider updating your vanity lighting to make the space pop and to give it a modern vibe at a small cost. The latest bathroom trends welcome features like open-concept showers with multiple faucets to create a truly
relaxing experience. Homeowners upgrading their showers should consider fixtures like rain showerheads and mood lighting. Adding a body sprayer accommodates everyone’s height. No more crouching under a too-short shower or struggling to reach a taller one. When it comes to color trends, bathrooms are embracing bold color. Designers tell us that deep palettes such as charcoal or taupe are soothing to the senses and invite relaxation. If you prefer lighter tones, both marble and stone are beautiful choices. White marble in a bathroom is classic, refined, and sophisticated, and it will always stand the test of time. You can still create a bold statement by adding a deep-toned tub in charcoal or sage green. Popular fixtures include freestanding tubs, oversized showers, floating vanities, and backlit mirrors. When planning your remodel, consider fixtures that maximize efficiency. Rising utility bills and energy conservation

A clever idea is to combine laundry room and bathroom so you can tap into existing plumbing. If you have space, consider placing your washer and dryer next to the bathroom sink and installing one cohesive countertop to connect the two zones. If you prefer to keep the machines out of sight, one of the simplest ways to combine a laundry/ bathroom remodel is to conceal your laundry behind closed doors. This way, the bathroom is the main function of the room while the laundry is cleverly hidden. A remodeler can customize cabinets that look just like the rest of the bathroom cabinetry. A new or upgraded bathroom will enhance your life while you’re living in your home and help you sell it when it’s time to move on. Once your remodel is complete, add a final touch of elegance and organization with luxury accessories like lotion and tissue dispensers and soap dishes. Then bask in the bliss of a dreamy, tranquil oasis! Sources for this article included: houzz. com, hgtv.com, and bobvila.com.

National Cancer Survivors Month A Celebration of Life!
By Leslie Byrne
A cancer diagnosis is the beginning of a journey filled with many highs and lows. When someone becomes a cancer survivor, it is the beginning of new way to seeing the future. Every year that someone is cancer free should be celebrated! June is National Cancer Survivors Month, and survivors across the country will gather with friends and family to raise awareness, celebrate new treatment options, and honor other survivors. It is a time to show that there can be great life after a cancer diagnosis. This year, survivors have a lot to celebrate because the future looks hopeful. In 2019, there were more than 16 million cancer survivors in the United States, and that number is expected to climb to 22 million by 2030. Cancers with the highest survival rates are breast cancer, prostate cancer, melanoma (skin cancer), thyroid cancer, and colorectal cancer. Early detection is key to the higher survival rates for these cancers, so early screening cannot be encouraged enough! Anyone who receives a cancer diagnosis will quickly learn that they have more treatment options than ever before and that many long-standing treatments have been improved. Tools used to confirm a cancer diagnosis include a physical exam, lab work, imaging, and biopsy. We also know that the type of cancer often dictates which treatment option is best, as cancer is not a onesize-fits-all disease. Chemotherapy is still one of the best ways to treat cancer because it can attack cancer cells that doctors can see but cannot
remove with surgery or radiation treatment. Chemotherapy targets and kills fast-growing cancer cells. We have all heard about the negative effects of chemotherapy, like nausea, fatigue, and hair loss, but advancements in chemotherapy drugs are making it more tolerable and less harmful to healthy cells. Also, the medications designed to weaken the side effects of chemotherapy continue to be developed and improved. Immunotherapy is a treatment that uses parts of a person’s immune system to fight cancer. The goal of immunotherapy is to boost the body’s ability to find and attack cancer cells. Precision medicine (also called targeted medicine) focuses on a specific marker on the cellular level that is unique to the tumor. This cellular identification allows it to attack the tumor. Watch for more advancements in immunotherapy—research is ongoing in this promising area of cancer therapy. Do not overlook the importance of having a support team! When patients surround themselves with doctors, therapists, life

Omaha Health Therapy Center Alternative Health Solutions
By Linda Sutherland
One of the things that makes Omaha Health Therapy Center such a uniquely successful place for choices in health care is its owner, Sarah Kracht. Sarah is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) and a board-certified family nurse practitioner (BC-FNP). She is a medical practitioner who passionately strives to bridge the gap between standard medical treatments and therapies in holistic medicine. To meet this goal, Sarah has earned certification in chelation therapy from the American College of Advancement in Medicine, as well as in IV nutrition therapy, IV ozone therapy, and Prolozone injections from the American Academy of Ozonotherapy. She is also a member of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. What does all of this mean? It means that Sarah can provide safe and effective alternative therapies that allow her patients more choice in their care and options. Sarah attributes her motivation and drive to the relief and success of her patients. This busy woman was originally inspired by family members who had medical issues that did not respond to conventional treatment. She knew there had

to be alternatives to standard medical treatments, and she has dedicated her life to finding answers Sarah Kracht, APRN, BC-FNP for patients in need. More and more people are looking for alternatives for pain management and chronic illness, and Sarah has answers. She offers treatments and solutions that can benefit so many different issues. Let’s take a look! Chronic diseases can decrease our immune system function and affect our health in ways we are not even aware of. Some people may not be getting all the vitamins and
2/9/22 4:10 PM

nutrients they need for optimum health, even if they are eating a generally healthy diet. These people may benefit from an intravenous nutrient infusion. The infusion is a specialized blend of nutrients and minerals that is completely safe and easy on your body. This procedure can increase energy, encourage regeneration and cellular repair, hydrate your body, and provide vitamins and minerals that you are missing. This infusion can also be a short-term accelerator for healing or a solution for overcoming a long-term health condition. If you suffer from chronic pain or lack of mobility in joints, Prolozone therapy could be just what you are looking for. Prolozone therapy enables the body to self-correct injury by fostering the healing of cells in and around an injured joint. It encourages the cells to regrow. Speaking as someone who has bone-on-bone knee pain, I can relate. This treatment sounds like something I need in my life! If you are like me, you have heard of chelation therapy but have no idea what it is. Well, it turns out that some of us have high levels of heavy metals in our blood that come at us through our water supply, dental fillings, cleaning products, and much more. There are many occupations that can result in metal toxicity, and pesticides can be hard-to-avoid culprits, as well. Symptoms of heavy metal toxicity can include confusion, muscle and joint pain, short-term memory loss, headaches, gastrointestinal problems, fatigue, and vertigo. A simple test can verify metal toxicity in the blood. Chelation therapy uses special drugs that bind to the metals in your blood, which you can then eliminate naturally through urination.

Platelet-rich plasma (also known as PRP) uses our own blood to repair injured and damaged tissue. This treatment can be a great alternative to medication and even surgery. Blood is harvested from the patient, spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from other parts of the blood, and then injected back into the same patient. Another procedure that Sarah offers is hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). HBOT is non-invasive and increases oxygen levels to all organs of the body, helping the body repair and regenerate. The body’s tissues need an adequate supply of oxygen to function properly. If tissue is damaged, it requires even more oxygen to survive. That is where HBOT comes in. HBOT is used for the treatment of many chronic diseases. It is well known for treating scuba and deep-sea divers affected by rapid changes in pressure, but it also helps with strokes, cardiac disease, carbon monoxide poisoning, and sports injuries. At Omaha Health Therapy Center, patients are monitored for safety throughout every therapy. Let’s hear it for anti-aging! Alpha-lipoic acid naturally occurs in our cells and is essential for metabolism and antioxidation. As we age, some of us don’t produce as much as we need. ALA can reduce inflammation and skin aging and can even promote healthy nerve function. Call Sarah Kracht at 402-763-9335 to set up an appointment at Omaha Health Therapy Center. If your health problems are not responding to traditional treatments, she can help you find alternatives! Learn more at chelationomaha. com.

Adult Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology High-Tech Solutions
By Jackie Byers
Thanks to technological advances, new treatments are frequently available for the medical issues that plagued us yesterday. The team at Adult Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology continually adds ways to better treat their patients’ urinary concerns, and they’ve been serving the Omaha area for 25 years. As their name suggests, the practice treats adults and children who have a variety of urologic or urogynecologic concerns. Urology focuses on the treatment of the male and female urinary tract system, as well as the male reproductive organs. Adult Pediatric Urology and Urogynecology includes board-certified urologists Euclid DeSouza, John Horgan, Bruce Lundak, Andrew Trainer, Stefanie Bolte, Brent Wakefield, and Andrew Arther. Urogynecology is a specialized field within gynecology. It focuses on women’s urinary and reproductive organ issues such as prolapse, incontinence, and pelvic floor disorders. Adult Pediatrict Urology and Urogynecology practice includes board-certified urogynecologists Emily Kean, Rebecca McCrery, and Amandeep Mahal. These doctors offer expertise learned from experience and research into the newest treatments. This ensures they can give their patients the best treatments and surgical options. The doctors are ably assisted by three advanced practice nurse practitioners (APRNs): Julie Wilson, Megan Lihs and Alexei Rosenthal, as well as physician assistants Megan Lusienski, Michela Duggan, Marnie Dellutri, April Hansen, Christina Lyons and Amber Rupiper. For both men and women, the doctors diagnose and treat bladder prolapse, stress urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, kidney stones, blood in the urine, and urinary diversion or retention. “We offer examinations, testing, and treatments on site,” Dr. Horgan says. “This enables us to provide the best care in a timely fashion, bringing our patients quicker relief.” The team utilizes microscopic endoscopy, a “non-surgical, minimally invasive tool that gives instant feedback. A procedure that once was a formal operation is now much easier on our patients.” “We collaborate often, sharing research on the latest techniques,” Dr. Horgan continues. One example of this research is the recent publication of an article in the Journal of Urology. Dr. DeSouza is one of the co-authors of the article, which describes the results of a treatment trial. The authors share what they learned about a particular technique to relieve the symptoms of recurrent anterior urethral strictures (a painful urological blockage). In this technique, a balloon is coated with medication and is inflated after it reaches the delivery point. Patients in the study reported immediate pain relief. This team offers front-line therapy for erectile dysfunction. They have successful treatments for interstitial cystitis, and they perform vasectomies. “Vasectomies now can be 40

reversed,” Dr. Horgan declares, “but the procedure succeeds best if done early.” A treatment for benign John D. Horgan, MD, FACS prostate hyperplasia (BPH), the UroLift System, is done in the office. “This provides quick relief and recovery, requiring no medication.” Another tool in use at Adult Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology is cryoablation. This uses an extremely cold liquid or instrument to destroy abnormal tissue. Thermotherapy is also available. It uses heat for treatment. Urodynamics is a diagnostic tool that helps the doctor determine how well your urinary tract is functioning. Axionics therapy is a longterm treatment for incontinence, both of the urinary tract and bowels. It consists of neurostimulator implant that helps improve communication between the brain and the bladder and bowel. Some urinary problems are common in children, like bedwetting and urinary tract infections. The doctors at Adult Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology have solutions to help your child with these troublesome issues. They also perform circumcisions and treat vesicoureteral reflux, a rare condition in which urine flows backward from the kidneys to the bladder. Urological cancers, including cancer of the bladder, kidney, prostate, and testicles, are fairly common and are often curable. Treatment techniques can range from supervised surveillance to surgery to radiation and chemotherapy. Many modern treatments are much less invasive than cancer treatments were in the not-so-recent past. Urinary incontinence is an embarrassing problem that can lead sufferers to avoid social situations, damaging their relationships with family and friends. You don’t have to suffer through incontinence! It is particularly common after vaginal childbirth but is not a normal part of the aging process. Recent treatments, including medications, surgical implants, and neurostimulators can all help restore your quality of life. Are you dealing with a urological problem? At Adult Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology, they have the team and the tools you need, all gathered under one roof. They have three locations in the metro area: 10707 Pacific Street, in Omaha; 3434 West Broadway, in Council Bluffs; and 2735 North Clarkson Street, in Fremont. To learn more or make an appointment at any of their locations, please call 402-3977989 or visit adultpediatricuro.com.

Value Investing is on Life Support Today’s Intelligent Investing
By George Morgan
Value investing is a theory about how the stock market works. The operative word here is “theory.” It is not a scientific approach. If something is proven in a scientific context, you can say that if this happens, this will follow, and it does—100 percent of the time. Value investing cannot say anything like that. What it can say is that this is the way we make decisions about when to buy and sell stocks. Sometimes, it turns out the way we think it will; sometimes, it does not turn out that way at all. The way value investing works is that investors gather intrinsic value and saw that the stock price was about half of all the financial and operational data that are available on a the intrinsic value, so I began buying the stock for my clients. publicly traded company. Pet Immunization
Helping Your Pets Stay Healthy
By Jackie Byers
When you decide to get a pet, a most important first step is to find a veterinarian to teach you the must-dos, maybe-dos, and don’tdos involved in ownership of the particular pet you have chosen. Vets will agree on the first must-do: getting the right vaccinations at the right time to give your pet the best chance at a full, healthy life. Vaccinations help you avoid costly treatments for preventable diseases, help your pet avoid unnecessary suffering, and help stop the spread of disease among animals in your area. In short, they are just good sense. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, there is a set of “core” vaccinations that all pets should receive and a set of “non-core” shots that are recommended based on the animal’s lifestyle. Your pet’s veterinarian will likely follow these guidelines. In many cases, they are required by law. As with human vaccines, protection against multiple diseases can sometimes be given in a single injection. Core vaccines for dogs include canine parvovirus, distemper, canine hepatitis, and rabies. All of these diseases are potentially fatal for dogs. These essential vaccines are generally given to puppies around two to four months of age. Core vaccines for cats are given on a similar schedule and include feline distemper, feline calcivirus, feline rhinotracheitis, and, of course, rabies. Rabies can be carried by any mammal, wild or domestic. Rabies can pass from pet to owner through saliva, most often from a bite. Once symptoms appear, rabies is nearly 100 percent fatal, in animals and humans alike—that’s why rabies vaccination is required for pets nationwide. Because this disease is easily contracted and transmitted to unvaccinated animals and humans, all 50 states require some form of rabies vaccinations for dogs and cats. Based on the lifestyle of your pet, your veterinarian can determine whether or not the non-core vaccines should be administered. For dogs, these commonly include protection against Bordetella (kennel cough), Lyme disease, and leptospirosis (bacteria that can lead to kidney or liver damage or meningitis). For cats, non-core vaccines include those for feline leukemia, Bordetella, Chlamydophila felis (conjunctivitis), and feline immunodeficiency virus. These diseases are generally spread from animal to animal, so the amount of time your pet spends around other animals (in kennels, roaming outdoors, in dog parks) plays a large role in whether or not these non-core vaccines are recommended. For example, many kennels require proof of these vaccinations before a dog can board there, since the constant interaction with other animals raises the risk of spreading disease. On the other hand, an indoor cat with very little exposure to other animals may not need to be vaccinated against feline leukemia, which it can only contract from
other cats. The vaccination against Lyme disease is likely only beneficial for pets that roam outside in wooded areas where the disease is prevalent. Veterinarians take these and other factors into account before recommending vaccines; they should be happy to answer any questions you have. Cats and dogs aren’t the only animals who can benefit from vaccination. Ferrets need to be vaccinated against rabies and distemper. A relatively new campaign has begun among veterinarians in the United States to require vaccination for rabbits against rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus type 2 (FHDV2). Pet rodents (hamsters, guinea pigs, mice, gerbils) don’t require any vaccinations, though their feces should be checked annually for parasites. Your vet keeps a vaccination record for your pet’s lifetime. If you move or switch to a different veterinarian, you’ll need to transfer your pet’s vaccination and other medical records to the new vet. Boosters are necessary to keep your pet protected from some diseases; your vet will know which vaccinations should be boosted and when boosters are due. Many vaccinations for both dogs and cats are under state jurisdiction, so different states might have different requirements. If you move out of state, your new vet will have all the information you need. In the United States, human vaccines are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Animal vaccines, however, fall under the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). According to their website, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (part of the USDA) is responsible for ensuring that products available “for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of animal diseases are pure, safe, potent, and effective.” As with human vaccines, vaccination for pets offers solid protection but not total immunity from disease. To keep your pet as healthy as possible, limit its contact with other animals and environments where diseases are likely to be found. The Green Thumb
Home Greenhouses Do You Need One?
By Linda Sutherland
When I was a novice gardener (I like to think of myself as an ex-novice gardener now), I was always dreaming about how wonderful it would be to have a greenhouse. That dream has never changed…I still don’t have a greenhouse in my backyard, and I still want one. It is more attainable now than it used to be, but I had to delve into the pros and cons of having a greenhouse before I actually purchased one. For me, the most outstanding reason to have a greenhouse is the ability to harvest fresh vegetables all year. I would know for sure that the crop has no pesticides on it, and I would save money at the grocery store. If you get a greenhouse with a heater, you could go out and pick tomatoes in January! Or, at the very least, you could extend your growing season in the fall. A second and significant reason for me is the money I would save on plants. In the spring, I am guilty of spending way too much money on seedlings. With a greenhouse, I could start seeds myself and have my own plants. An investment in seeds is considerably smaller than buying plants! Here in the Midwest, we give up over-wintering certain plants because of the winter climate. In the late fall, it is always a harrowing challenge to decide which potted plants shall live or die. With my own greenhouse, that would not be an issue.

June 2022
I have a great love of exotic plants that never would survive a midwestern winter. With a greenhouse, I could grow tropical plants that are not normally found in the area. I am thinking specifically of plants such as bougainvillea, banana plants, mandevilla, gardenias, and jasmine, just to name a few. Oh, how I would love and cherish those beauties in a greenhouse! Winter has a way of making me feel like I am in hibernation myself, and a greenhouse would allow me to be an active gardener even in the cold. A greenhouse has the ability to offer a predictable environment to shelter and protect tender plants from all sorts of damaging weather extremes. There is also a lovely flexibility about a greenhouse that enables us to grow plants we may have stayed away from because we thought they were too picky or too delicate. Sometimes, we have some pretty freaky weather systems that can cause irreputable damage to plants; a greenhouse offers protection from that, as well.

www.womensedition.com
If you really want to explore the benefits of a greenhouse, you could even make some money at it. A greenhouse comes with abundance of crop, so you might try your hand at selling some of your excess vegetables, fruits, and cut flowers at a farmer’s market. Also, need I mention that a greenhouse will provide you with more hours to stay healthy and happy? With an enclosed, structured greenhouse, you can also be sure your plants are protected from pests such as insects, squirrels, and rodents. If you are now satisfied that you need a greenhouse in your life, there are some basic questions that you need to ask yourself before you take the plunge. First, think about sizing. Do you need a starter type or a grower greenhouse? If you just want to start seeds in a warm environment, then a small cold frame type will you get you started nicely. If you want a walk-in greenhouse, you have lots of options. You can get a four by six greenhouse, or you can go up to a 20 by 16 and almost any size in between. There are so many varieties of styles, materials, and colors available now that you should have no problem finding a greenhouse to suit your needs. The next option is type of panels—opaque or clear glass as well as plastic. For growing plants to maturity, diffused light is always best. If you plan to use your greenhouse in the winter months, it needs to be insulated very well. Multiple-walled polycarbonate is often used for this purpose because the internal air spaces between the layers provide great insulation value. If you decide to go with a larger style, you will need to check the zoning laws in your neighborhood. Most greenhouses are now sold as kits and likely will require two installers. Does this expand your notions of what you can do? Yes, indeed! You may have spent your gardening career teaching yourself to bend to every whim of Mother Nature. With a home greenhouse, you have much more control over the growing conditions! Ask friends or neighbors with greenhouses what they have learned from their experience and check with your local nursery to see what’s possible!

Physical Therapy
Improving Quality of Life at Any Age
By Anne Yankus
In recent decades, there has been a push to find alternative methods of treatment so people can avoid potentially dangerous pharmaceuticals. From holistic medicine to home remedies, you can find articles touting the benefits of all manner of treatments, but one thing you don’t hear mentioned very often is physical therapy. Physical therapy, in its most basic definition, is the treatment of injury or illness by physical methods such as massage, heat treatment, and exercise. You may think of physical therapy treatments as something for people who are recovering from a physical injury or extended periods of immobility, but it can be so much more than that. One subset of physical therapy is occupational therapy. Where physical therapy has a wider focus on improving a patient’s ability to move any part of their whole body, occupational therapy is more specifically focused on developing a patient’s fine motor skills to perform specific tasks. Unless you’re struggling with just fine motor skills, physical therapy is more likely the treatment to look in to. As most of us know, women’s health concerns can be constantly changing as we travel through life’s different stages. Physical therapy has a specialized branch for women’s health that focuses on rehabilitating the pelvic floor. This set of muscles is severely taxed during pregnancy and childbirth, leading to postpartum issues like pain during sexual activity, pain lifting heavy
items (including small children), and incontinence. Pelvic floor rehab, then, can help improve a woman’s quality of life in many ways! Even if it has been a long time since you had your babies, it’s never too late to improve the function of your pelvic floor. Women aren’t the only ones who can get whole life benefits from physical therapy. Physical therapy neuro rehab can help men on the road to rehabilitation from old (or new) head injuries that may have caused concussions or a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Long-standing issues with vertigo or chronic pain in the head, neck, jaw, and back can also be eased with regular physical therapy. Pelvic floor therapy can also help men with issues of incontinence and sexual dysfunction. Of course, physical therapy is also a boon for athletes. Rehabilitation from a sports injury is the most obvious benefit, but physical therapy can also help athletes increase their mobility, refine their flexibility, eliminate pain, and increase their strength. Whether you’re a young athlete just starting out or a seasoned veteran of sports, physical therapy should definitely have a spot in your training regimen.

The Miracle Just Around the Corner
By Janet Van deWalle
Recently, I had a wonderful conversation with a local business owner. Her name is Julie Wynn, and she and her husband, Joe, own Lewis Art Gallery. We were comparing our businesses and how long we had been around. I shared that Women’s Edition was 36 years old, and Julie told me their business was 51 years old. Wow!
inspiration—why we continue to do what we do. This gives us the superpowers to keep going. Why do we do what we do? Pride? Passion? Stubbornness? Family? Survival? Success? Love? Happiness? Making a decision to be resolute in our quest makes things happen. Knowing that we will get a second wind when things really get challenging helps us to get up in the morning and do it again.
“Tenacity is required.” —Julie Wynn, Co-Owner of Lewis Art Gallery
“Each mistake teaches you something new about yourself. There is no failure, remember, except in no longer trying. It is the courage to continue that counts.” —Chris Bradford, The Way of the Sword
Our conversation got me thinking. What makes a business, a family, a relationship, or a person keep going? What makes us choose to throw in the towel sometimes, when, at other times, we take a deep breath and continue to pursue our goals and dreams? “Magic happens when you don’t give up, even when you want to. The universe always falls in love with a stubborn heart.” —J.M. Storm I looked up the word “tenacious” and found the following synonyms: certain, persistent, dedicated, determined, hell-bent, patient, positive, resolute, single-minded…yup! When I reflect on “success” in any area of life, I realize that it truly does take tenacity. Having the foresight and determination to keep going, even when challenges seem to be insurmountable, is what makes it possible for us to achieve our goals. We have to dig deep down to find our own “hot button” of

Having an ongoing heart-to-heart conversation with ourselves will assist us in getting over the rough spots. Giving ourselves the precious gifts of self-reflection and self-accolades about who we are, who we want to be, and where we want to be, will lead us by the hand to the next step. “Life is inherently risky. There is only one big risk you should avoid at all costs, and that is the risk of doing nothing.” — Denis Waitley

Kids Comments
A Summer of Fun
Kids Won’t Know They’re Learning
Summer vacation is right around the corner. Most of our kids will be out of school. This former teacher can attest that many children lose some school skills over the break. What are your plans for the summer? Are you secretly keeping those school skills sharp? Get the kids actively engaged. Plan fun activities! For a start, I suggest phasing out total reliance on electronics. While often helpful, they can deter learning. If you’re planning a trip, get an atlas or map of the area. Map reading is a skill that gives one a sense of place, direction, and distance. Maps usually provide more information than just the route you want to take. I love following my “planned” route from point A to point B and looking at notations on the map for nearby natural wonders (like the highest point in the state) or places of historic interest before we set out for the day. Our kids tried to distract me from signs that said Scenic View or Historical Monument. Sometimes, I would let it work. If you’re planning a staycation, look for activities in your area. Chambers of Commerce usually have a calendar of summer activities for families and kids…many of them free. Go to your local library for scheduled story times and activities, or just let the kids browse through books appropriate for their interests or age level. Don’t have a library card? Get one! Let

the kids check out books for themselves. Let them learn that librarians are great sources of information. Go to neighborhood parks or hike in natural areas. Look for animal prints or unusual plants. Play outdoors. Enjoy nature. Remember your binoculars and cameras. Take along a bird book in order to identify different species. If it’s a clear night, you can stargaze. Star maps pinpoint what you might see in your part of the country. With a little bit of preparation, you can pick out constellations and other common star groupings. Be prepared to pick up trash while you’re out there in nature. You’ll be keeping the community clean and teaching the kids responsibility at the same time. Teach the kids to cook. Learn about different cultures by going to ethnic festivals. Let each kid plant a garden or container for which they’re responsible. Have everybody keep a journal of your activities…talk about what you did and learned when you get home. Whatever your summer plans, include activities for the whole family. Whether you’re at home or away, indoors or out…whether you have an extended vacation to share, a weekend, or just an hour after work, do things the family can enjoy together. You’ll keep those school skills sharp just by learning and enjoying your time together. No worksheets are required!

Shelter Insurance® Comprehensive Quality
By Angella Arndt
If you lease or own a home, car, or business, you certainly have at least one insurance policy, but are you sure you have the right coverage? Does your insurance agent regularly review your policies to make sure they still fit your home and business needs? If you are looking for an insurance agent who provides personalized service, Annette Schneider with Shelter Insurance® is ready to help you with your insurance needs. Annette began her career at a marketing firm specializing in life and health insurance. She became a licensed insurance agent and has been serving insurance clients for 25 years. Annette has extensive experience with property, casualty, life, and insurance products. Annette became an agent with Shelter Insurance® in 2020. Shelter Insurance® has been providing insurance products for 75 years. The A rated company’s business philosophies align with her own, Annette says, including maintaining strong client relationships, providing positive claims experiences, supporting agents, and giving back to the community. She provides a wide array of insurance products, including auto, home, life, renter, inland marine, business, ATV, boat, motorcycle, RV, and farm insurance. Annette emphasizes the importance of getting to know clients and understanding their needs when establishing and maintaining relationships. When meeting with new clients, she thoroughly reviews their current insurance policies and any policies they are considering. This is important because insurance premiums vary according to coverage types and insurance limits. “I provide several options, including pros and cons, so that my clients can make an informed purchasing decision,” Annette says. “I help make sure that all of their policies align and have appropriate deductible levels. When making recommendations, it’s important to consider a client’s financial position and understand their expectations.” The client relationship does not end when a client purchases a policy. Annette performs regular reviews to help ensure that her clients maintain appropriate levels of coverage. “Insurance needs change over time,” she points out, “and I want to assist in making sure my clients have what they need for where they are in life.” Annette is currently licensed in Nebraska, Iowa, Georgia, and Arizona. She can become licensed in other states—in fact, she has obtained licensure in particular states for clients who have relocated but didn’t want to give up their stellar agent. Annette notes that she is available to her clients even when the office is closed. Non-emergent calls are returned within 24 hours, and she provides deadlines when working on client projects so everyone knows what to expect. Annette recently moved her office to the Modern Work Building at 8790 F Street. This location, which is located just off Interstate 80
and 84th Street, will allow her to serve small Annette Schneider, business owners better while maintaining Shelter Agent convenience for all her individual clients. Annette notes that Shelter Insurance® offers competitive general liability and renter’s insurance policies. What should clients consider when hiring an insurance agent? Annette recommends that individuals ask what they can expect from each agent they meet. What types of products are offered? Does the agent communicate in person, by telephone, or by email? What is the agent’s availability? What is the claims process? Does the agent explain coverages with clarity? Asking questions will help you select an insurance agent who best suits your needs. Technology has affected the insurance industry by depersonalizing the insurance buying process and de-valuing the role of expert advice, Annette says. Consumers may focus on price and may not fully understand what they are purchasing. “The internet disregards the role of an insurance agent in providing professional advice to help ensure clients are getting the insurance they need,” she shares. Factors such as age, liability limits, deductibles, and types of coverage all affect premiums. Not all homeowner insurance policies cover calamities like hail, wind, flooding, sewer backups, and sinkholes—or policies might require different deductibles for different types of damaging events. This may not be clearly spelled out, and policyholders may be unpleasantly surprised when they file a claim. Annette finds it rewarding to educate her clients and provide a personalized experience. “The right insurance provides a promise to pay in the event of an unforeseeable situation,” she concludes. “When clients see that promise become a reality, they understand the value of having a good insurance agent, and it’s gratifying to help them in their time of need.” Annette Schneider Shelter Insurance Agency is NOW located at 8790 F Street, in Omaha. Business hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with evenings, Saturdays and Sundays by appointment. Simply BeYOUtiful Time for a Tune-up?
By Kate Beiting
Inside the Aislinn Medical Spa in Gretna, Nebraska, Mellisa Karel is weaving magic. Her clinic, Simply BeYOUtiful, offers beauty solutions to clients of all ages. Some of us have finally emerged from a two-year hiatus from our previously-standard beauty routines. If you have been working from home or wearing masks in public, you may find yourself befuddled by the state of your eyebrows, lips, and teeth. Is it time to reach out and proceed with a beauty tune-up? Mellisa understands, and she can help. Simply BeYOUtiful is not your run-of-the-mill beauty clinic, and Mellisa is not your average clinician. This energized entrepreneur has had years of schooling in a wide variety of areas. Mellisa grew up in Sterling, Nebraska, and attended SCC in Lincoln. After working for several years as a dietetic technician, she returned to school and graduated in 2010 from the UNMC College of Dentistry as a dental hygienist. In 2019, she returned to school to obtain an aesthetician license. Her combined certifications as a licensed aesthetician and licensed permanent color technician means she is a certified permanent makeup artist.

All of this experience and training has brought MelMellisa Karel, LE, RDH, Owner lisa to the Aislinn Medical Spa in Gretna. Her varied schooling, experience, and skills means she is able to meet most of the requests of her clients in one setting. When you visit Simply BeYOUtiful, you can expect a oneon-one personal consultation with Mellisa, during which she will listen closely to learn about your desired outcomes. “I want clients to know that I can answer their questions and

address any fears or concerns they may have,” Mellisa says. “This can be a bold step, and I can walk them through the journey.” Mellisa is trained and certified in a variety of licensed skills that you won’t find with most aestheticians. As a licensed dental hygienist, she can perform teeth whitening in a short amount of time. The Philips Zoom Quick Pro whitening varnish system is used, along with light. No cumbersome trays or nightly rituals! After you have achieved that bright white smile, you may be inspired to move on to other treatments. New technology and techniques have improved the art of permanent makeup—you may not even know what’s possible these days! You can undergo eyelash lifting and curling, which will temporarily curl and tint the lashes for 6-8 weeks, eliminating the need for mascara. You can have permanent eyeliner tattooed onto the top of your lash line, eliminating the risk of poking yourself in the eye with an eye pencil. The effects will last for several years. Permanent lip color—a sort of lip tattooing—is another service Mellisa offers. No more worries about reapplying lip color throughout the day! Are you excited about these possibilities but feeling a bit squeamish about the discomfort of procedures on the delicate areas of your face? Mellisa understands that, too, and there’s a simple solution. Mellisa uses a topical numbing cream during procedures to keep clients comfortable. She can also help with brows, whether you prefer microblading or waxing. For skin care, she specializes in derma-planing, facials, and peels. That neon butterfly tattoo you got during girls’ night
A Few Words From One Of Our Advertisers: “I began advertising with Women’s Edition starting with the November 2019 issue and I have been thrilled with the results! I’ve had numerous new clients come to the gallery because they saw my ads in Women’s Edition, even as I’ve been working by appointment in recent months due to the pandemic. Most had never been to downtown Ralston, where I’m located, so introducing them to our town and what we have to offer has been another benefit! The advertising has resulted not only in sales, but also in new followers on my social media platforms and new newsletter subscribers. Together with their outstanding customer service and sales results, advertising with Women’s Edition has been one of the best investments I’ve ever made for my business. Thank you, Women’s Edition!” —Debra Joy Groesser
when you were 22 seemed like a good idea at the time, right? If you want to remove that work of art but balk at the potential pain and scarring that can result from laser tattoo removal, Mellisa can help you by offering another solution: saline tattoo removal. According to Mellisa, this newer technique is a great alternative to laser removal that is safe for most skin types. Saline tattoo removal does involve needles and there is a slight possibility of scarring. Mellisa loves hearing that her clients love their results… and they love them, indeed! Her clients give testimony to their experience with Mellisa. “I met with Mellisa twice,” reports one satisfied client. “She is excellent; very skilled and detailed.” Another client describes Simply BeYOUtiful as an “absolutely wonderful medical spa. Mellisa is very kind, she explains the procedure well—I got extremely good results.” Another client, who reports “beautiful permanent brows,” notes that Mellisa answers all questions patiently and makes her clients feel comfortable. That is Mellisa’s goal: to make her clients feel comfortable and confident in working with her to achieve their desired outcome. She wants you to look and feel your best with her help and guidance—she wants you to be BeYOUtiful! Simply BeYOUtiful is located inside the Aislinn Medical Spa, a full-service spa and medical clinic, at 818 Village Square in Gretna, Nebraska. Acupuncture
An Ancient Secret for Modern Times
By Loretta McCollum
Natural health treatments are growing in popularity. This is not surprising, since many natural health techniques are proving themselves to be as effective as traditional medicine in many cases, and they often have fewer side effects. Acupuncture is a relatively safe, effective, drug-free treatment that can reduce pain and relieve symptoms of a multitude of health issues, including chronic pain, allergies, depression, anxiety, and insomnia. Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical practice. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe that the human body has thousands of pressure points connected by pathways that create an energy flow through the body. This flow is known as Qi (pronounced chee) and is responsible for overall health. They also believe that disruption of this energy flow can result in disease or ill health. Acupuncture is believed to improve the body’s energy flow, or Qi, by activating our natural, self-healing abilities. Acupuncture is believed to stimulate the central nervous system, releasing chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemical changes release natural pain-killing opiates and improve blood flow, promoting the body’s natural healing abilities, as well as improving physical and emotional well-being. To determine the treatment that will provide the most benefit for your needs, an acupuncturist considers your specific symptoms and which body parts are affected. They will also consider your overall physical health and lifestyle. An initial evaluation and treatment can take up to 60 minutes. A common treatment plan typically involves one or two treatments per week. The number of treatments depends on the condition being treated and its severity. During treatment, five to 20 very thin needles are inserted at various depths into strategic points on the body while the patient lies on a padded table. Since the needles are so thin, there is little discomfort—you may not even feel them being inserted. A mild aching sensation may be noticed when a needle reaches the correct depth. The practitioner may apply heat to the needles or gently move them after placement. In most cases, the needles remain in place for 10 to 20 minutes while you relax. There is usually no discomfort when the needles are removed. Following the procedure, some individuals feel relaxed, while others may feel energized. Side effects are typically minimal and may include bruising, skin rash, and dizziness immediately following the procedure. Single-use, disposable needles are now the standard, so the risk of infection is minimal. Always let your acupuncturist know if you are experiencing discomfort. Your acupuncturist may use additional techniques during your session. Moxibustion involves the use of heated sticks made from dried herbs, held near the 56

acupuncture needles to warm and stimulate the acupuncture points. Electroacupuncture utilizes an electric device connected to several needles, providing a weak electrical current to stimulate the needles. Cupping is where glass or silicone cups are applied to the skin, creating a suction effect that helps increase circulation and balance your energy. Studies have shown that acupuncture is effective in treating a multitude of emotional and physical conditions. Many people turn to acupuncture for chronic conditions such as lower back and neck pain, knee pain, sciatica, bursitis, tendonitis, and arthritis. It can be effective in addressing migraine and tension headaches. It is sometimes used to treat headaches, in conjunction with traditional pain medication. It has also been effective in treating emotional and psychological issues like depression, anxiety, stress, and addiction. Symptoms of eye, ear, nose, and throat disorders such as allergies or sinusitis, as well as respiratory conditions like hay fever or bronchitis, can be lessened through acupuncture. It can treat digestive issues, including gastritis, irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, abdominal bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. Individuals with other physical conditions like menstrual cramping, chronic bladder infections, and side effects from chemotherapy, may also experience a reduction in symptoms through acupuncture. If you decide to visit an acupuncturist, be sure to check his or her credentials. Most states require a license, certification, or registration to practice acupuncture. A diploma from the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine is usually required for licensing. Some traditional medical practitioners, including physicians and dentists, also practice acupuncture. Ask your practitioners about their training and experience. Inquire as to the anticipated treatment plan and cost. Some insurance companies may cover the cost, while others may not. It’s also important to give your provider a full picture of what you do to manage your health. If you’re having difficulty managing pain or other health issues, or are searching for a more natural approach to well-being, you may want to consider giving acupuncture a try. Home Works
Exterior and Interior Paint New Look, No Construction
By Anne Yankus
It’s nice to give your home a little face lift every once in a while, but renovating or redecorating can be time-consuming and expensive. Luckily, there is an easy way to give your home exterior or interior a sharp and dramatic new look: painting! Experts recommend repainting a home’s exterior every four to six years. Depending on the typical climate where you live, your type of siding, and how well your home exterior has been maintained, you may be able to push it off for longer. Even in the best of circumstances, you don’t want to let it go for longer than a decade. Before you change your exterior look, stop to consider your neighbors. This may seem like an odd ask—after all, the house belongs to you—but unless you live out in the country where your nearest neighbor is over a mile away, you may want to put yourself in their shoes before you choose a bold exterior color. No one wants to look out their window and be blinded by a neon pink house every morning. It’s also worth your while to stop and think of your curb appeal and resale value. Houses painted in unusual colors don’t generally sell well. There are still lots of great colors out there to help you express your personality through your home, within reason. Color trends this year have been leaning towards warm neutrals, dark hues, and lots of natural greens.
When you’re setting your schedule, keep in mind that your painters will need time to do all the prep work before painting can even begin. To make sure your paint will last as long as possible (and look its best), they’ll remove all dirt, debris, and mildew (pressure washing will usually do the trick); sand every surface; caulk gaps, patch holes, and replace rotten areas; and apply primer to any stains or bare spots. If your home was built before 1978, you’ll also want to test your previous paint for lead before just painting on top. Lead test kits can be purchased online for cheap, but if your test comes back positive, your painting pro might need extra time to adhere to all the proper removal techniques. For historic homes, a fresh coat of paint can even help maintain its structural integrity. Homes built before the 1870s are usually constructed with handmade bricks that typically cannot withstand the elements without a protective layer of paint. Since brick is porous and repainting with a modern latex-based paint can trap moisture in the bricks underneath, it’s recommended that you stick with breathable

Male Hormone Treatment Overcoming Low Testosterone
By Angella Arndt
Menopause is a natural part of life for women that occurs as estrogen and progesterone levels decrease with age. Menopause often brings hot flashes, insomnia, vaginal dryness, and weight gain. This life transition gets a lot of press, but we don’t hear as much about what happens to men during that time of life. You may be surprised to learn that men also experience sex hormone changes with age. the blood test in the morning, since testosterone levels are Although the phrase “male menopause” has been used to highest around 8:00 a.m. refer to age-related testosterone level decreases, the male exMaintaining healthy lifestyle habits can improve tesperience is quite different than what is experienced by womtosterone levels and overall health and well-being. Positive Perspective
My Favorite Teacher
By Janet Van deWalle
Leader and Follower
Do you remember the best teacher you ever had? What made them so memorable? My best guess is they were very good at being a leader. The best teacher I ever had was smart, caring, and encouraging to every single member of the class. She built a group of seventh-grade nerds into a confident, caring group of young adults who became a team and had one another’s backs. “Outstanding leaders go out of their way to boost the selfesteem of their personnel. If people believe in themselves, it's amazing what they can accomplish.” —Sam Walton
I have memories of how much she was loved and respected by every single one of her students. Were there rowdy kids in the class? Of course. She used a gentle sense of humor to reel them into the group. Was she a pushover? Absolutely not. Was she willing to take a back seat and let her students lead the class in a different direction than the day’s plan? All the time.
“A leader is best when people barely know he exists; when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.” —Lao Tzu
We’re all required to take a leadership role in our lives at one time or another. I believe we all WANT to be good leaders. But how? “Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.” —Jack Welch
“He who cannot be a good follower, cannot be a good leader.” —Aristotle
The challenge is looking outside of ourselves to see how we can help those whom we are supposed to lead. Human beings all have different wants, needs, and challenges…just like all of us seventh graders. Getting to know the members of our team on an individual basis, treating them with respect, and bringing them into the group is a start. We can all learn… as I did from my favorite teacher.
I learned so much from her. She always had a smile on her face. She was a master at bringing the shy kids into the group and making everyone feel like one of the gang. Her demonstration of leadership taught me a lot.
“The most dangerous leadership myth is that leaders are born—that there is a genetic factor to leadership. That's nonsense; in fact, the opposite is true. Leaders are made rather than born.” —Warren Bennis
