It’s Your Time!
Happy Mother’s Day, all! I hope that all of our readers have a very special day…whether or not you have children. I believe that all women should be celebrated on this day. Women are the caretakers of the planet. We deserve a day to be pampered…even if we have to make it happen ourselves!
As the years go by, I’ve seen women change how they take care of themselves on this day. Many will get a wonderful massage, a facial, a manicure, or a pedicure. Others join daughters, sisters, mothers, and friends to go to brunch and indulge in bottomless mimosas! Some get treated to breakfast in bed by their spouse or kids. Whatever your special day brings to you, I think the key is to take it slow, relax, and do things you love. For me? I believe I’m planning on doing a whole lot of nothing! (Did you hear that, Manny?)
When I was growing up in a family of six kids, it was always a little crazy around the house. In addition to the human family, there typically was a hamster, a dog, and a cat. They were crazy times…I still don’t know how Mom did it!
As kids, we tried to make Mother’s Day special by bringing our mom breakfast in bed. The reality? I think we left a huge mess in the kitchen. How dare we! We truly didn’t know any better. Mom was always gracious, thanking us and not letting on that all she probably wanted to do was sleep. I sure miss my mom. I think about her every day, even though she passed in the early ’90s. It’s okay, though—we routinely have “conversations” when I need some motherly advice.
My daughter, Carissa, is the proud mom of two beautiful girls: Savannah, who is 19, and McKenna, who is 12. Carissa is a terrific mom who goes above and beyond to be there for her girls. I admire her so much for that. She has worked from home since the pandemic, and I think it has worked well for the whole family. Mom is always there! Happy Mother’s Day, Carissa.
I hope you all have a terrific month. Enjoy the outdoors, get some sun, and find time to take care of yourself! We will see you next month…the 38th anniversary issue of Women’s Edition!

May Flowers and Sunny Gatherings—Let’s Eat!
By Kate BeitingMother’s Day Brunch Casserole
Cook and crumble a pound of breakfast sausage (or cooked ham or cooked bacon or no meat at all). Remove the meat to the bottom of a baking dish and sauté a bit of onion and red pepper in the frying pan. Put the onion and pepper on top of the sausage. Cut up 6 or 7 bakery croissants and add to the baking dish. In a large bowl, mix 6 eggs with 1 cup of whole milk. Add salt, pepper, garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard and pour over the croissants. Sprinkle on 1 cup of shredded cheddar. Press down to cover the croissants. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake another 10 minutes, until golden and puffy. Garnish with diced scallions, parsley, and additional cheese.
Shirred Eggs
Butter 4 medium-sized ramekins. Into each one, put a cut-up slice of ham, a bit of cheese, and 2 unbeaten eggs. Cover with cream. Sprinkle with salt and pepper; add a bit of parmesan, if desired. Put the ramekins in a casserole dish or skillet and pour boiling water around the ramekins until the water is about 2/3 of the way up the sides. Place in the oven and bake for 15 minutes at 375 degrees, until the eggs are set. Sprinkle with chopped chives, other herbs, and more cheese. Serve with crusty toasts.
Gran’s Anyday 1950s Coffee Cake
Mix together 2 and 1/2 cups of flour, 1 cup of brown sugar, 1/2 cup of white sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of nutmeg, and 3/4 cup of vegetable or canola oil. Mix until crumbly. Take out 1/2 cup of the mixture and set it aside for topping. To the flour mixture, add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 1 egg, and 1 cup of
buttermilk. Lightly blend. Pour into a greased 9x13-inch baking pan. Sprinkle the reserved crumb topping on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes.
Aunt Klee’s Asparagus Sammies
Trim the crusts off of 12 slices of white sandwich bread. Roll out each piece thinly. Spread each slice with a bit of butter and a bit of Dijon mustard. Put a slice of Swiss cheese on the bread, followed by a cooked spear of asparagus, and roll up. Place the sammies seam side down on a parchment-lined cookie sheet. Brush with melted butter. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes or until brown.
A Spring Chicken
Rinse and drain a whole chicken. In a small bowl, mix together 1 teaspoon of poultry seasoning and 1/2 teaspoon each of salt and pepper. Place the bird in a roasting pan and sprinkle it with the seasoning, inside and out. Cut up one yellow
onion, one stalk of celery, and one carrot. Place the pieces inside the bird (or around it, if you run out of room). Slice a lemon and place the slices in and around the bird. Melt 2 Tablespoons of butter and rub it into the chicken. Bake at 350 degrees for 90 minutes or until the meat tests done (165 degrees internal temperature). Let rest for 15 minutes. Slice and serve.
Patio Ranch Casserole
Buy a rotisserie chicken, shred the meat, and place it in a greased 9x13-inch casserole dish. Top with 3 diced green onions. In a large bowl, mix 1 can of cream of mushroom soup, 1 can of cream of chicken soup, 1 can of tomatoes and chili peppers (like RoTel), 1 cup of chicken broth, 1/2 cup of sour cream, 2 teaspoons of cumin, 1/2 teaspoon of oregano, and 1/2 teaspoon of chili powder. Cut up 10 small corn tortillas and sprinkle them on top of the chicken. Sprinkle 3 cups of shredded cheese over the mixture. Pour the soup mixture on top. Add a bit more cheese, if desired. Bake at 350 degrees (on a cookie sheet) for 40-50 minutes.
Pan-Steamed Asparagus
Wash, trim, and snap 1 pound of asparagus spears. In a large skillet, melt 1 stick of butter. Add the asparagus and 2 Tablespoons of water. Cook and stir for 2 minutes, then add 2 cloves of sliced garlic, plus salt and pepper. Continue stirring for 4 minutes, until stalks are al dente or tender. Cover with foil and remove from heat until ready to serve. You may sprinkle with a bit of fresh lemon juice, if desired.
Strawberries and Shortcakes
Wash, peel, stem, and drain 1 pound of strawberries. Sprinkle with 2 Tablespoons of sugar and mash lightly to release juices. Let sit at room temperature.
For the shortcakes, stir together 3 cups of flour, 1/2 cup of
sugar, 4 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Cut in 1 and 1/2 sticks of cold cubed butter—use a fork or your fingers to break the butter into pea-sized pieces. Mix together 1 and 3/4 cups of whipping cream (or whole milk), 1 egg, and 1 Tablespoon of vanilla. Add the cream mixture slowly to the flour mixture, stirring until just combined. Use a large cookie scoop or a 1/3 cup measuring cup to portion the dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Sprinkle tops with additional sugar. Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. Split, fill with berries, and top with whipped cream.
Springtime Lemon Cake
Combine 1 small box of lemon-flavored gelatin with 3/4 cup of hot water. Mix 1 box of lemon cake mix with 4 eggs and 1/2 cup of vegetable or canola oil. Add the gelatin mix and beat on medium for 3-4 minutes. Pour into a greased 12-cup Bundt pan (or a 9x13-inch, if you don’t have a Bundt-style pan). Bake at 325 degrees for 50-55 minutes, until the cake tests done. Let cool for 15 minutes. Mix a small can of frozen and thawed lemonade concentrate with 1/2 cup of sugar. Poke several small holes into the cake and pour half of the mixture onto the cake. Wait 10 minutes, then invert the cake onto a serving platter. Poke a few more holes in the cake and pour the rest of the lemonade mix onto the cake. It will be runny.
Peanut Butter Cookies
Mix 1 stick of soft butter with 1/2 cup of peanut butter, 1/2 cup of white sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, and 1 egg. Whisk together 1 and 1/4 cup of flour, 3/4 teaspoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Add the dry mixture to the creamy mixture. Drop dough onto a parchment-lined cookie sheet. Flatten and criss-cross with a sugar-coated fork. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.

For a Summer of Fun!
Whether you’re headed for a tropical vacation or a cozy staycation, this summer has cool fashion trends to fit your style. Let’s start with color… or the lack thereof. Wearing white during the summer is fundamental, but this is the year of the white dress. For all those beautiful sunny days ahead, a chic white dress is just the ticket. All the luxury brands were showing them in their spring lineup. More affordable ready-to-wear is sure to emu late these designers—they always do.
There is nothing that feels and looks fresher than a white poplin cotton sundress, or a tailored shirtwaist dress, or even a white t-shirt paired with a white jean skirt. This classic summer style goes everywhere from a summer picnic to an evening out with a simple change of accessories. White gives you the opportunity to show off a fabulous accessory, like an artisanal bag or belt.
Lucky for us, pearl jewelry is on trend for 2024. Shimmery pearl jewelry is perfect with a white dress and adds a note of sophistication and cohesiveness. Another chic way to wear white this summer is to pair it with gold. Gold is everywhere this season! There is nothing more elegant than white with gold accessories. Get on board with this year’s metallic trend and give your outfit a glint of sunshine. Fabrics with a metallic thread running through them bring even more sparkle.
Fun patterns are everywhere in summer fashion. A beautiful variation this year is an abstract pattern that resembles watercolors. Wearing this painterly motif is like wearing a breath of fresh air. Think of wearing a Monet print on a flowing skirt. Nothing could be more romantic!
Florals are always a well-loved, classic print for summer. Roses seem to be a prominent favorite of designers this year, and women are loving the variations. My favorite is a black dress embellished with a single large rose—so simple, and so captivating! Of course, there are many small- and medium-sized rose prints in all tones, but bright red seems to be the most popular.
Choosing a floral pattern is sometimes difficult. It’s best to pick a floral scale that works with your body. If you are tiny, go for a small print; if you are medium-sized, choose a mid-size print; if you are a full-bodied woman, a large print would work for you. Using this rule of thumb can take the mystery out of choosing a print that looks good on you. Of course, fashion rules are made to be broken, so feel free to experiment and wear whatever makes you feel confident!
Dots and stripes are going to be popular this summer, with a nod to the preppy looks of the ’80s and ’90s. Polka dots will pepper fashion this year, adding a touch of whimsy to every imaginable silhouette. This forever cheerful and uplifting pattern will be found in all sizes, colors, and styles. Great for every age, polka dots and stripes are always appropriate. Bows also seem to be appearing on everything from shoes to necklines to jewelry for another fun touch of whimsy.
For the more conservative and tailored fashionistas among us (that is, those of us looking for something more refined than polka dots and bows), designers are pairing masculine trends with feminine ones. Think of a sheer, flowing skirt with a white shirt and blazer or a feminine blouse with a tailored pant. There is a demure sophistication about mixing the two. It is always classy and appropriate.
Those ’90s polo shirts have returned, along with vertical stripes in all sizes. When wearing stripes, remember: the narrower the stripe, the more slimming. Wide stripes are eye-catching but enlarge the body. Black and white is a perennial favorite and is especially beautiful this year when done in florals. A black and white floral print never goes out of fashion. If you’re doing black and white stripes, be careful—you don’t want to look like a referee on your way to a game!
The pandemic has drastically changed the fashion landscape in recent years. People want to put comfort in front of fashion instead of…well, the opposite. Fashion trends continue to drive this outlook by mixing leisurewear with ready-to-wear. Try yoga pants and sneakers paired with a white tee and tailored blazer. This can be a great alternative to jeans and a tee, but it does take some thought and experimentation.
Fashion is always fun, and the changing of the seasons gives us some opportunities to refresh our look. Add a few on-trend pieces to your closet to perk up your summer wardrobe and have fun mixing and matching. Let’s go shopping!
Remodel Nebraska
Let the Outside In
As a writer, I have always pictured myself composing peacefully in a sun-filled room, surrounded by windows through which the beauty of nature glistens. The fireplace is crackling, and my dogs and cats are on their respective chairs, dozing and periodically taking stock of the squirrels on the other side of the glass. On another day, the room might be filled with my entire family eating Thanksgiving dinner, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, distracted by the view while my grandson sneaks the wishbone. Yes, these are just some of the memories that I could make in a new sunroom or all-season room from Remodel Nebraska. These pros can turn your sunroom dream into reality.
One of Remodel Nebraska’s popular projects is a three-season room. This space starts as an attached porch or deck that is subsequently enclosed by glass or screens (or both). You can have doors to the outside and floor-to-ceiling windows to keep the wind, bugs, and dirt out. This type of room is called a three-season room because it is not designed to be heated, making it a pleasant space to use during spring, summer, and fall.
Remodel Nebraska can also build you a four-season room, which is like a three-season room but with a delightful difference that you can probably guess! These rooms are designed to be heated and cooled so they can be enjoyed in all four seasons. They typically have floor-to-ceiling windows and doors to let all the beautiful views of the great outdoors in.
By Linda Sutherlandand the quote Jack provides are always free, and there is never any pressure to make a decision. Building a custom room is a big project and a big deal, and he wants everyone he meets with to be comfortable with their decision.
Once a client has decided to work with Remodel Nebraska, they move to the planning stage, where they figure out how it can all come together. After that, the building stage starts, and that is when the magic begins.
Jack loves many parts of his job, but what he loves best is “the look of happiness and delight on people’s faces at the finished product.”
Don’t forget the all-season room! This is really more like an addition to the house. In most cases, there is no wall or separation between the addition and the rest of the house, and they share the same heating and cooling system.
Who is responsible for all these wonderful design ideas? That would be Jack Rediger, owner of Remodel Nebraska. Jack is a native Nebraskan, raised in Milford. His family has had a car business in Milford since 1929! Unsurprisingly, Jack grew up knowing a lot about running a business. It seems only natural that he would decide to start his own company.
Jack has installed 2000 sunrooms over the past 23 years. (Fun fact: Jack holds the distinction of having built the largest sunroom in the country.) Jack now runs the business with his son, Reagan, and they really enjoy working together. Jack and Reagan are dedicated to transforming their clients’ homes into the indoor/outdoor spaces they desire.
Jack’s first step with a potential client is a home visit to talk about what the client imagines for their space. This visit
One of the reasons for Jack’s success, he believes, is that he values his employees and treats them well. His crews return the favor by staying with him for years. “Many of our clients have commented on what an amazing group of workers we have,” Jack shares. “When I tell them that we have six crews, they always think that they surely got the best crew. But what they don’t know is that all of our crews are excellent! They take great pride in their workmanship, and it shows. They get a great deal of satisfaction from seeing and hearing how much our clients love their work.”
Jack loves many parts of his job, but what he loves best is “the look of happiness and delight on people’s faces at the finished product. Some people tell me about the amazing memories that they have created in these rooms, and it makes me feel a great deal of joy.” What a gift to feel a sense of joy and accomplishment at work! That’s no accident—it’s the result of dedication, customer service, and high-quality workmanship.
At Remodel Nebraska, Jack and his crews go the extra mile to make sure that the room they build looks like it was always part of the existing house. Soon, you’ll become so accustomed to walking straight into your new room that you might need to remind yourself that it wasn’t always there! TAURUS
(April 20 – May 21)
You have been stressed about work, but May is going to be fine. You will have a good start to the month, and both your professional and personal life will be at peace. The stars are entirely in your favor—if you have kept any significant task pending, try to wrap it up by the month’s end. People will be impressed by your fresh approach toward life, the universe, and everything.
Gemini (May 21 – Jun. 21) Two things you need to be careful about in May are your love life and your finances. Try not to make any significant investments or lend money. Maintain regular communication with your partner so they know what you’re going through.
Cancer (Jun. 21 – Jul. 23) May should be a smooth month if you can steer clear of conflicts among your relatives. Good news for students this month—there is a great probability that you will succeed in the competitive examinations that you have been working toward.
Leo (Jul. 23 – Aug. 23) Don’t think twice about taking a step forward on the professional front. You can expect good business deals and career opportunities. You may encounter people who will be beneficial to you as you build your career.
Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 23) Take time this month to dig deep into your finances. Analyze everything! Grabbing good deals depends upon knowing when a deal is truly good. You need to make calculated and informed decisions.
Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) You may lose a good business opportunity if you use outdated approaches. Push your boundaries and read as much as you can. Staying up to date makes you a real contender. Scorpio (Oct. 22 – Nov. 21) Plan a small trip with your partner
to alleviate tension and improve communication between you two. A positive mindset and fresh outlook on your relationship will also improve your situation at work.
Sagittarius (Nov. 21 – Dec. 21) This is an adventurous month for you! Try new things, learn while doing, and embrace the chance for growth. In your relationships, speak openly and honestly about your feelings. It will increase understanding.
Capricorn (Dec. 21 – Jan. 19) Communication can be the key to success for you in May, whether you’re hoping to improve your relationship, your career, or your investments. You will be appreciated at work for your contributions, and this could open doors to success.
Aquarius (Jan. 19 – Feb. 19) This could be a great month for you if you can avoid self-sabotage. Believe in yourself! Don’t make this month all about work; your partner needs your attention, too.
Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 21) You might come across professional or investment opportunities this month, but don’t make a change if you are happy where you are. There may be more and better opportunities for you in the upcoming months.
Aries (March 21 – April 20) May will be a month of change for you. Your anxiety level will be high; meditation will help you stay calm during times of decision-making. Maintain frequent communication to avoid misunderstandings between you and your partner.
Inspirational Athletes
The Greatest of All Time!
By Deborah DaleyWatching sports provides a unique combination of excitement, competition, and camaraderie that can’t be found in many other activities. It is an experience that unites people from all walks of life. Sports figures fascinate us and earn our admiration and respect. Whether it is the thrill of competition, the celebration of human achievement, the sense of community, or the pursuit of happiness, sports have something to offer everyone.
I played sports when growing up. I loved the challenge, the camaraderie of the team, and the time I got to spend with my dad (he was a volunteer basketball coach). I’m devoting this article to a few of the GOATs (that is, the greatest of all time) who have inspired me and many others.
First up is Caitlin Clark. I can’t get enough of this University of Iowa basketball phenomenon. Her story is an Oscar-worthy script. Born in Iowa, she played at a Catholic school, was taught by a father who loved the game, and has emerged as the number one player in college basketball. Every time she plays at home, her college arena is sold out, even if there’s a sub-zero blizzard outside. It’s not just a home-court advantage, either; when she visits other arenas, they sell out, too.
She is what is known as a complete player. She leads the offense, seeing the entire court and instigating each
play. To watch her survey the court and make an unbelievable pass to a team member for a lay-up is like watching orchestration at its best. She is the all-time leader in points scored by a single player in the NCAA, overtaking previous record-holder Pete Maravich in March of this year. She also leads the league in assists, proving she is a team player, too. She takes time for her fans, stopping after every game to sign autographs and take photos.
Next is Simone Biles, who holds every record in women’s gymnastics and may well surpass her own records in the next Olympics. She has seven Olympic medals and broke the record for the most world championships in 2019. In a sport that is dominated by young athletes, she continues to shine at the ripe old age of 26.
This 4-foot, 8-inch dynamo exhibits beauty, grace, agility, and power. Every move she makes is like a dance, but with
acrobatic precision. She continues to push herself and has invented gymnastic moves that now bear her name. She has received not only athletic awards but also the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Simone is a role model for many young women who cheer her on from the stands, from the gym, and from their living rooms.
It is difficult to imagine a scenario in which Kathleen Ledecky isn’t the top swimmer in the world. She has completely dominated the distance freestyle events since winning Olympic gold at age 15 in 2012. She has won seven Olympic medals and 21 world championship gold medals, the most in history for a female swimmer. She has broken 16 world records.
To watch her glide through the water with powerful strokes is astonishing, and the breath control she exhibits is for the ages. I swam competitively as a child, and I love watching her compete. Stay tuned for the Tokyo Olympics!
They call Nebraska “the state of volleyball” for very good reasons. The Nebraska Women’s Volleyball team has dominated the sport for many years. This year was no exception, with a team of underclasswomen going to the NCAA tournament and falling just one game short of the title. The Huskers’ dominance started to take shape in the 1990s, which coincided with the rising popularity of volleyball nationwide. Under Coach John Cook, who took over in 2000, the team has won multiple NCAA championships.
Nebraska regularly leads the NCAA in average attendance and has participated in several of the highest-attended women’s volleyball games ever played. On August 30, 2023, Nebraska and University of Nebraska Omaha played at Memorial Stadium in front of 92,003 people, the highest-attended women’s sporting event in the United States.
I watched all their matches during the NCAA tournament. I was struck by their power and grace, and the athletic abilities of these players who excel under tremendous pressure. To see a young woman over six feet tall get down on the floor and dig the ball is truly amazing. The success of this team has impacted not only the state of Nebraska but also the sport at large, inspiring young athletes across the country and creating a surge of interest in women’s volleyball.
Watching these GOATs compete is inspiring, joyful, and just plain fun!
Relocating to Senior Living?
Meet the Residents of Sunridge Village
Many of my friends and I are reaching the age when we are considering relocating from our homes to a community for senior citizens. These communities operate under a variety of names, including assisted living, memory care, or skilled nursing homes; others advertise independent living, 55+, and active seniors. Our conversations focus on what we want when the time comes. What should we expect? How do we know we’re making the right decision? My conversations over the years with Michale Kavan, Marketing Director for Sunridge Village Independent Living Retirement Community, have been very helpful. I am also fortunate to have recently interviewed three residents of Sunridge. Grace, Carol, and Diane have all moved to Sunridge in the past year or so.
Grace made the move when it became physically difficult for her to keep up with maintenance of her “nearly quarter-acre” property. “I loved our home and yard,” she reminisces, “but then I fell while pulling weeds.” She also notes that when they built the house more than 50 years ago, they didn’t consider future problems dealing with steps…“and there were LOTS of steps.” The neighborhood grew from a quiet suburb of Omaha to a thriving community, and expenses increased accordingly. “I decided to downsize and started looking at community living. When my daughter visited us at Sunridge, she knew it was perfect for me!”
After retirement, Carol and her husband decided to move to California, where they stayed for more than 20 years. They missed having family around and decided to move back to Omaha. “We considered a lot of options, and recalled how much my mother enjoyed living at Sunridge. We felt it would be a perfect fit for us too!” she says.
Diane and her husband lived on an acreage outside of Omaha. After he died, Diane realized that the large lot and assorted buildings were too much to take care of and decided to move. “I looked at a lot of places,” she recalls. “Some looked great on the outside but were missing something inside. Some required an expensive buy-in. Some just didn’t feel welcoming when I walked in.” Then she found Sunridge. “I knew I was home when I came in and found smiling faces!” she recalls.
These three ladies love so many things about living at Sunridge! They all value the freedom and independence of living in an apartment-centered community. Underground parking is convenient, as is the availability of a van and driver when they don’t want to drive themselves. Tasks like yard work, home maintenance, and housekeeping are taken care of, so there’s no need to find qualified help to do the work (or do it themselves). Best of all, when you don’t have to worry about maintenance, you can eliminate your to-do list and fill your time with other, more enjoyable things.
By Marge ShoemakerI asked the ladies what advice they would give anyone thinking about leaving their current living conditions. Make lists, they advise. What regular expenses do you have at your current home? Include rent or house payment, food, utilities, property taxes, insurance, transportation, and any other fees that come with the property, such as HOA fees.
Your next list should be of questions to ask the person who shows you each community you’re considering. Find out what is included in the monthly cost. Are you responsible for cleaning your living space and doing your laundry? What meals are included, and are there limitations on extra cooking? What amenities are available? Things like storage, exercise rooms, places to socialize with neighbors, and internet accessibility are among the extras to be considered.
Security of the building and grounds is an important consideration. Is there a secured entry system? A check-in protocol for residents and guests? Are overnight guests allowed?
Have a family member accompany you on your visits— they may think of questions you haven’t asked. Take time to notice the current residents. Are they smiling? Do they greet you like a neighbor? Is the place clean and welcoming?
Sunridge Village has many advantages. Opened in 1998, it is owned by the Anzalone family. The management team is on site 24/7/365. This often includes Richard Anzalone, who is readily available when residents have questions, problems, or suggestions. The monthly rent, based on the size of the apartment, covers most amenities, including an emergency life-line pendant. Controlled access allows you and your guests to come and go with ease.
Time for yourself, a spacious apartment, flexible dining options, underground parking, local ownership, friendly neighbors…who could ask for anything more? Sunridge Village Retirement Community is located at 13410 Blondo Street, in Omaha. For more information, call 402-496-0116 or visit sunridgeomaha.com. Your new home awaits!

—Hannah Diediker, CSABuild an Outdoor Oasis Surround Yourself With Beauty!
By Janette CalabroWhen the warm weather beckons us outside, it’s time to embrace creative ideas for an outdoor oasis. As flowers spring from the earth and sunlight kisses our skin, we naturally gravitate toward the open air. Now is the time to design an alluring space where you can seek solace in nature for your own personal well-being…or invite your guests to enjoy it with you! Let’s check out some ideas for building an outdoor kitchen, popular grills and smokers, patio and garden ideas, and lively ideas for entertaining. Transform your backyard into your ideal warm weather destination this year!
A backyard retreat usually starts with your landscape designer, who helps your dreams come true with a personalized design. A pro draws out a sort of blueprint before your project unfolds. Hardscape, softscape, and nature come together naturally in the hands of an expert. Some construction may be in order if you’re starting from a blank slate or even if you’re building on improvements. Before you hire a company, ask how long they’ve been in business and if you can see their finished products. Are they licensed? Read the contract before you sign. If you’re not sure, ask a trusted friend or family member to read it with you.
Let’s dive into it with outdoor kitchens. The rise of full, functional kitchens dominates outdoor living ideas this year, increasing your home’s value while adding priceless value to your lifestyle. Outdoor kitchens have evolved into fully equipped culinary hubs, with high-end appliances, durable materials, and thoughtful layouts that create a seamless transition from indoors to out. New appliances are sizzling hot, pun intended, and so is outdoor cabinetry.
Some smaller outdoor kitchens consolidate counter space, storage, and the choice of either a sink, dishwasher, or mini refrigerator, all secured in a stainless steel cabinet (often powder-coated). No need to run in and out when cooking outdoors. For cabinets, try an eye-catching color like retro mint green, and ask your designer to install a ceramic cooker directly into the cabinet to fire up delicious summer foods. Nowadays, one piece of outdoor furniture can serve as both cooktop and dining table.
Kitchens often start with a patio or deck constructed from weatherproof materials like concrete block, metal, or waterproof wood. A U-shaped layout is an easy wraparound fit that accommodates kitchen appliances and entertaining areas. Other than cabinets, some must-haves for any outdoor kitchen include a sink, electric cooktops, hybrid outdoor ovens that run on gas or firewood, and a refrigerator to keep food and drinks cold. Add a wine cooler to for extra zing. An outdoor grill (infrared, propane, gas, or built-in electric) is always a top-notch option, cooking food fast in any quantity. Try a griddle for breakfast al fresco instead of a grill. Talk about finessing your culinary skills! Don’t forget the ever-popular pizza oven. Homemade pizza will be the highlight of the meal.
Add a smoker to the party and take the labor out of a home barbecue. There are several different kinds of smokers, including charcoal, pellets, gas, and electric. Pellets and charcoal are hands-on processes, but you get that wood-smoked flavor. A gas smoker provides more reliable heat but not the smoky flavor. Electric smokers are the safest to use (since there’s no flame), but, as with gas smokers, you sacrifice the smoky flavor.
The world has been grilling outdoors over a direct flame or other form of heat for centuries. CNN tested a whole range of dishes in search for the best grills this year. They found that one of the best for grilling consistently was the classic Weber charcoal grill, while several brands of propane grills offered the cleanest results. The Traeger pellet grill managed the temperature more precisely for detail-oriented cooks, especially for smoked foods. The Big Green Egg ceramic grill still gets high marks for versatility in smoking, grilling, pizza baking and more.
Of course, the ever-popular gas grill doesn’t require a lot of fuss. Convenience reigns. Hit the ignition, turn the valve up or down, and the cook controls dinner with no waiting for hot coals. “Modern versions of (gas) grills are often made out of heavy-duty carbon steel and are not designed for portability or even to be moved around your backyard easily,” CNN reports. “The Nuke Delta weighs 284 pounds, but it supports a massive 40-inch-wide cooking grate with some 547 inches of cooking space.” The Weber Genesis was voted best gas grill in 2023. Remember to ask your designer for details about built-in grills, smokers, and fire features for your outdoor kitchen.
The seating area in your updated outdoor kitchen ensures that social circles have room to talk. Try a rustic picnic table with benches for a campsite feel, or go all out with patio furniture made of plastic, metal, wicker, or waterproof wood. Waterproof cushions, pillows, and rugs provide luxurious comfort while the smell of cooking wafts through the air. Seating can go upscale, too—think fancy barstools at an outdoor bar or a plush waterproof sofa that includes pillows and throws! As an alternative, bring the forest to your backyard for cheap seating. Tree stumps, anyone?
Fire features rule on cool nights. Consider gas fire tables (a hit from last year) for chilly nights. Contemporary fire
tables glow with clean lines and simple appearance. Styles range from minimalist to glass, rustic wood, and even wicker. You could also enhance outdoor relaxation on the patio with a fire pit for warmth and ambiance. Round firepits (stone or brick) are trending in 2024, as are gas fireplaces. Fire pits run on natural gas (attached to your home fuel supply), propane, or wood.
Try a fire bowl (usually gas or wood) next to the swimming pool or as a centerpiece on the patio. You’ll get the same warmth and atmosphere with more flexibility, since bowls are movable. Some designers incorporate fire and water together in a single feature. A water feature alongside fire creates a memory your guests won’t forget!
Concrete is popular for more than the patio floor. It can be textured and sealed so you can use it for a table, countertop, or just about anything you want to create. Layer cushions and blankets for comfort and design. Warm colors are trending this year—think rustic colors like terra cotta, blush, soft yellow, beige, or brown. Pastels are popular, too, with texture for a “wow” effect.
The rise of outdoor entertaining embraces nature. Homeowners are incorporating biophilic design like living walls made from natural materials or water features that foster a sense of harmony with your surroundings. Sustainable landscaping is on the rise, too, with ancient practices such as harvesting rainwater. Many homeowners are choosing eco-friendly materials that reduce environmental impact, making a deeper connection to the natural world.
If you want your backyard to host dinner and a movie,
consider an outdoor theater—they are all that this year. Add a weatherproof screen to the patio and host a movie or game night. On the flip side, tech-free zones designate spaces to unplug from digital distractions. Just sit back and soak up the universe, the stars, and nature’s sounds.
Whether you’re inviting friends for a wellness retreat or cherishing some time to hang out solo, a backyard living space can be a wonderful place to unwind after a long workday. Transform the space under a pergola (that is, a structure with columns that support a roofing grid and beams). Pergolas are open, allowing air and sunlight to filter in. Plant woodsy vines or climbing plants for more privacy. In this space, you can build yoga skills on a bamboo deck or station a comfy chair for outdoor reading. Sculpt mediative gardens with greenery and pops of colorful flowers. Consider a therapeutic hot tub. Yes, outdoor hot tubs are making a comeback! Add comfy hanging chairs that float effortlessly off the ground. Levitate in luxury on a hammock under the sun or the moon. Don’t forget the lights! Lights and lanterns throughout your oasis create an enchanting twinkle and wrap you in their soft glow.
Outdoor living trends this year celebrate the fusion of design, sustainability, and the human desire to connect with nature. Whether you’re building an outdoor kitchen, investing in a new grill, or soaking up the benefits of spending more time outdoors, dream big. Step outside, breathe in the fresh air, and embrace the beauty around you.

Waybridge Ketamine Clinics
Innovative Treatment for Depression
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, major depression “is one of the most common mental disorders in the United States. For some individuals, major depression can result in severe impairments that interfere or limit one’s ability to carry out major life activities.”For people who are still struggling with depression despite traditional treatment, Waybridge Ketamine Clinics offers an innovative treatment option.
Waybridge Ketamine Clinics provides intravenous ketamine therapy, a treatment alternative that is gaining attention because of its effectiveness in reducing depression symptoms and its low risk of side effects. Ketamine can also improve symptoms for people suffering from anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and chronic pain.
Leslie Koenig began her career as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy and earned her MD at Loyola University in Chicago. She worked as an emergency room physician at Methodist Hospital for several years before deciding to establish an intravenous ketamine clinic. “I loved the emergency room, but we provided reactive treatment in that setting,” she recalls. “I wanted to practice integrative medicine.”
She had begun researching how to open her own practice when she received a serendipitous phone call from a former Navy colleague. He said that he had seen ketamine work wonders and asked if she might be interested in opening a ketamine clinic. He helped her through the process, and Waybridge Ketamine Clinics opened in September 2023.
Ketamine was first used in the 1960s as a safer anesthetic alternative and was approved by the Federal Drug Administration in 1970 as a general anesthetic. Ketamine is on the World Health Organization’s Model List of Essential Medicines . Dr. Koenig shares that ketamine has been proven to be safe and effective, but many medical practitioners are not familiar with its use in treating depression.
Traditional treatment options for depression include psychotherapy and taking anti-depressants. Standard anti-depressants like serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are slow-acting drugs that increase the level of serotonin to ease depression. Although these treatments work for many people, some experience marginal or no improvement in their symptoms. This is known as treatment-resistant depression (TRD).
“Depression is a disease of the mind in which there are decreased connections. Ketamine stimulates the growth of neuronal connections to re-establish lost connections,” Dr. Koenig explains. Multiple studies have shown that ketamine is effective in addressing treatment-resistant depression and other related mood disorders. “Ketamine is an old medicine with a new purpose. It is the only rapid-acting anti-depressant.”
As an emergency room physician, Dr. Koenig dealt with mental health problems every day. As a combat veteran de -
By Angella Arndtployed to Afghanistan, she lost colleagues to suicide. “I see the mental health crisis every day,” she says, “and my driving force is to prevent suicides. Ketamine works, and it can transform lives.”
Waybridge Ketamine Clinics is the only local practice focused solely on intravenous ketamine. “We put our patients at the center of care and use a physician-led, integrative approach,” says Dr. Koenig. “Ketamine is a potent drug that requires expertise.” She notes the importance of a team approach that involves a patient’s primary care physician, mental health provider, and family in developing an appropriate treatment plan.
Potential patients participate in a free video consultation to review their medical and family history, receive answers to questions, and see if they qualify for treatment. “We want to set patients up for success when they first come in,” Dr. Koenig emphasizes. She reviews medical records and collaborates with a patient’s healthcare team to make sure everyone is on the same page.
Dr. Koenig works with patients to set goals before beginning treatment. Each session is different, and goals are aligned with those of the patient’s therapist. “Therapy is like snorkeling through the mind—you can dive for short periods,” Dr. Koenig muses. “Ketamine is like a scuba tank. You can dive in to shed light on the dark corners of the mind. You can look from a safe place, in a protected setting.”
The treatments are either twice a week for two weeks for chronic pain or twice a week for three weeks for mood disorders. Chronic pain infusions are 2 to 4 hours long, while mood disorder infusions last 40 minutes.
Dr. Koenig loves to hear that patients feel like themselves again. She thanks the family members who are amazing advocates for their loved ones and provide an important support system. “It is rewarding to heal people who have been suffering for a long time,” she concludes. “We literally get to change people’s lives.”
Waybridge Ketamine Clinics is located at 17021 Lakeside Hills Plaza, Suite 203, in Omaha. The office is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Saturday by appointment. Call 402-965-1371 to schedule a consultation or find them online at waybridgeclinics.com.
Life and Hope After Stroke
Lincoln, Nebraska woman shares her inspiring story of rehabilitation, recovery
Ann Tillery happened to be on a video conference call when her stroke began. She was meeting with legislators to share the story of her mother’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease and noticed that the left side of her face was beginning to droop, and she was having difficulty speaking.
She toughed it out to the end of the call, and when she stood up, she crumbled to the floor. Her entire left side was already paralyzed – within 5 minutes of the onset of her stroke symptoms.
Ann tried calling for help, but no one could hear her through the closed conference room door. Luckily, she had her phone in her hand, and she was able to dial 9-1-1.
“I’ve never felt so alone in my life, not knowing when somebody was going to walk through that door,” Ann said.
First responders arrived quickly and transported Ann to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with a hemorrhagic stroke, which occurs when a weakened vessel ruptures and bleeds into the surrounding brain. Within 25 minutes of the onset of her stroke symptoms, Ann was at the hospital, receiving treatment.
For Ann and the one in four adults over the age of 25 who will experience a stroke in their lifetime, there is life – and hope – after stroke. Rehabilitation can build strength, capability and confidence. It can also help someone who experiences a stroke continue daily activities, despite the effects of their stroke.
There are more than 7 million stroke
survivors living in the U.S. today. But not all strokes – and not all stroke survivors – are the same. Finding the right rehabilitation plan is vital to recovery after stroke. The American Stroke Association has developed standards to help rehabilitation facilities provide consistent, high-quality care for individuals as they recover from stroke.
Facilities that have agreed to participate in the Association’s post-acute stroke standards program agree to follow the Association’s treatment guidelines and have made a commitment to providing care that is based on standards aligned with American Stroke Association science and vetted by stroke rehabilitation experts.
Thanks to a wonderful team, which included PT, OT and speech therapists at Bryan Medical Center in Lincoln, one of several Nebraska facilities participating in the Association’s post-acute stroke standards program, Ann said she is just amazed that just 10 days later she was able to walk again unassisted.
“I remember after my stroke my therapist asked me, ‘What’s on your
calendar?” She said. “And I told her the first thing was the Cattleman’s Ball in my hometown of Columbus! That was only two and a half weeks away, and my therapist said, ‘Okay… how hard do you want to work?’”
Ann asked to be pushed at every therapy session. “And by God, I couldn’t believe it, but they got me to the Cattleman’s Ball!”
Ann continued her outpatient therapy for another six months, working on balance, endurance and problem solving. She said that therapy has enabled her to get back to her active lifestyle and to a place where she’s really enjoying life again.
“When you have something life-
Rehabilitation is key to recovery after stroke. It helps you relearn or change how you live.
Choosing the Right Setting
You can rehab at:
• Inpatient rehabilitation facility
• Skilled nursing facility
• Long-term care facility
• Long-term acute care hospital
• Home-based or outpatient care
Your needs determine which type(s) are best for you. The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association recommends inpatient rehabilitation facility care if you can tolerate at least three hours each day of stroke rehabilitation.
Stroke Rehab Should Include:
• Training to improve mobility and ability to do daily tasks
• Individually tailored poststroke exercise program
• Access to cognitive/ engagement activities (books, games, computer)
• Speech therapy, if stroke caused difficulty speaking
• Eye exercises, if stroke caused loss of vision
• Balance training for those with poor balance or fall risk
Congratulations to the following Nebraska facilities who have joined the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association’s post-acute stroke care initiative.

Clearing Things Up
Treating Acne
By Loretta McCollumAcne is the most common skin condition in the United States, affecting close to 50 million Americans each year. It’s often associated with puberty but can occur at any age. Acne can be traumatizing, directly affecting quality of life by causing emotional distress and low self-esteem.
Anyone can develop acne, but it does play favorites. It’s more prevalent in teenage boys than in teenage girls. In adulthood, women are more likely than men to develop acne, due to hormonal changes during pregnancy and menopause. Family history is an indicator—that is, if your parents suffered from acne, chances are that you will, too. Medications containing corticosteroids or testosterone may trigger or worsen acne. Stress is not a direct cause of acne, but it may increase the severity.
Acne occurs when hair follicles under the skin become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. The follicle wall may bulge, resulting in a whitehead. If the clog is open to the skin’s surface, it will darken, causing a blackhead. Acne typically appears on the face, forehead, chest, back, and shoulders, as these areas contain the most oil glands.
Although there is no cure for acne, many effective treatments exist. Oral or topical medications are frequently prescribed and work by reducing oil production and swelling. In-office procedures such as light therapy, chemical peels, and steroid injections have proven to be beneficial. A treatment
regimen is based on several factors, including the patient’s age and the severity of the acne.
Common topical treatments include antibiotics, azelaic acid, and retinoids. Antibiotics destroy bacteria while reducing inflammation and redness. Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring acid that contains antibacterial properties. It can also be used to minimize the skin discoloration often associated with acne. Some forms of azelaic acid are safe for pregnant or breast-feeding women. Drugs containing retinoids help prevent blockage of hair follicles and are frequently prescribed for moderate acne. They may increase sensitivity to sunlight and must be used with caution.
Oral medications such as isotretinoin, anti-androgen agents, and antibiotics help fight acne. Isotretinoin is a derivative of vitamin A. It’s recommended for people whose severe acne hasn’t responded to other treatments. Anti-androgen agents such as Aldactone are another option, particularly for adult women and adolescent girls. These drugs work by blocking the effect of hormones on the skin’s oil producing glands. Oral antibiotics reduce bacteria and are commonly used in conjunction with topical treatments such as benzoyl peroxide. Like topical retinoid drugs, antibiotics have been linked to sun sensitivity.

In-office therapies such as steroid injections, chemical peels, or light therapy may also be helpful. Steroid injections can flatten unsightly acne bumps. Chemical peels involve repeated applications of a mild chemical solution to unclog pores and exfoliate dead skin cells. They also stimulate new skin growth. Multiple treatments are usually required. Pregnant women should consult with their physician prior to undergoing treatment.
Laser therapy targets the acne bacteria that causes redness and swelling. It also shrinks oil glands, decreasing oil production and helping to prevent clogged pores. These treatments may be used in conjunction with a topical photosensitizing agent. AviClear is the first FDA-cleared device for treating mild to severe acne. AviClear works by selectively targeting and heating the skin’s sebaceous glands to destroy their sebum production. The glands will grow back, but they will produce less sebum, helping to prevent future breakouts.
Even after it’s cleared up, acne can still leave its mark in the form of scars. The good news is that treatments exist to make those scars less noticeable. These procedures are performed in a doctor’s office, outpatient facility, or day spa. More than one type of treatment may be needed to achieve optimal results.
Skin resurfacing removes damaged layers of skin from the affected area, allowing new healthy skin to grow. As new skin flourishes, scarring becomes less noticeable. Dermabrasion and microdermabrasion are two frequently used resurfacing techniques. Another option is to insert collagen or fat fillers into the affected area. This puffs up the skin under the scar, resulting in a smoother appearance. In cases of severe scarring, surgery may be required to remove the scar tissue, which is then replaced with a skin graft taken from another area of the body.
Diet may also play a role in fighting acne. Consuming foods containing omega-3 fatty acids helps reduce inflammation. Fish, eggs, spinach, kale, nuts, and soy products are good choices, as are foods rich in antioxidants and fiber. Keeping a food diary will help identify foods that trigger acne breakouts.
If you suffer with acne, see your dermatologist or other skin care professional to get you started on the path to clearer skin.

Window Shopping
Pull the Curtain Back!
By Robyn V. PowellWhen homeowners consider new or replacement windows, the primary focus is typically energy efficiency and ease of operation. As a result, many people overlook the impact windows have on a home’s style—both inside and out. Window selection is a golden opportunity to not only increase your home’s energy efficiency but also enhance its style and curb appeal. Check out today’s red-hot window trends and discover how the latest technologies and elevated styling options will take your home well into the future.
An investment in new windows requires balancing the type, shape, size, material, and energy efficiency features with your budget. Architects, builders, and homeowners alike continue to embrace home design with a focus on wellness, customization, and sustainability, and this has affected the features that homeowners look for when selecting windows.
The shift toward more holistic design and the emphasis on enhanced health and well-bring have translated into more patios and outdoor living spaces. Consequently, there’s been a huge uptick in demand for pass-through windows and multi-slide doors that seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor spaces. High density urban living is also on the rise, resulting in a growing desire for windows that help make small spaces feel larger and more open.
allows for more natural light and enhances the aesthetic appeal of a room.
With the growing desire for more personalized style, more homeowners are opting for customized windows. Unconventional shapes such as round or arched windows, as well as custom grill patterns, colored glass, and unique hardware are fantastic ways to introduce character into your home design.
Designers tell us that a leading trend is floor-to-ceiling windows that maximize natural light and offer an unobstructed view of the outdoors. When paired with sleek minimalistic frames, these windows offer a contemporary and sophisticated look that
When it comes to window style, double-hung and slider remain the most popular choices. Both styles suit a wide range of architectural styles and allow for opening one section of the window for ventilation while the other side stays closed for safety. Casement windows, which open with a crank, maximize the amount of natural light coming into a space, making them another popular choice.
It’s important to choose appropriate materials for your window frames. There are various options available, each with benefits and drawbacks. Wood frames, for example, offer a

classic look and can be stained or painted, making them a great choice for historic homes. Wood frames, however, require more upkeep than other materials and are more expensive.
Vinyl windows are a practical, cost-effective choice. They require little maintenance but can warp or discolor over time. Fiberglass windows are more expensive than vinyl but offer improved insulation, weather resistance, and energy efficiency. Aluminum windows are lightweight and durable but may not be as energy-efficient as other materials.
Wood-clad frames consist of a low-maintenance exterior of aluminum or vinyl and a core of natural wood that is resistant to temperature transfer. They seem to offer the best of all worlds but can be susceptible to water intrusion, making proper installation critical.
Selecting the glass is the next step. Window glass is referred to by the number of panes (single, double, and even triple-pane layers) and its level of energy efficiency. Double-pane windows with low-E glass and argon gas will protect the inside of the house from harmful UV rays in the summer and prevent heat from escaping during the winter. Window glass is rated by R–value, which is the unit of measure used to describe the thermal resistance of a window... in other words, how well the window will insulate your home. Most double pane windows have an R-value of 2-4. The higher the R-value, the better the insulation and the higher the cost.
No matter what type of window you choose, the success of your project will largely be determined by two factors: the quality of materials and the quality of installation. Hiring certified installers is your best guarantee that your windows will be installed properly and securely. Professionals carefully measure to ensure a perfect fit and will pay attention to the smallest details, including dust containment and work site cleanliness. The peace of mind that comes with a professional installation and workmanship warranty is well worth the investment.
Energy-efficient windows pack a punch when it comes to value-add for your home. They help reduce energy consumption, lower utility bills, enhance your home’s style, and increase its value. With an understanding of window basics, energy efficiency factors, materials, and popular window style options, you’ll be prepared to make an informed decision to invest in stylish windows that will transform your living space and provide benefits for years to come.

Suffering From Allergies?
Breathe Easier This Spring!
By Leslie ByrneSpringtime is here, tempting us with outdoor adventures. For millions of us, it also marks the beginning of allergy season, a miserable time of sneezing, sniffles, and itchy eyes. For those with asthma, it is a double whammy, as allergies can often trigger asthma symptoms. That’s why May is National Allergy and Asthma Awareness Month—a time to shed light on these common conditions and take steps to manage them effectively.
Having allergies is not the same as having asthma, but allergies can be a trigger for asthma. Both can start at any age, including infancy! A family history of allergies or asthma increases the chances that a child will develop allergies or asthma, so families should watch for symptoms early.
An allergy is when the immune system reacts to a foreign substance. Seasonal allergy triggers can include trees, grass, pollen, and mold spores. Common symptoms include coughing, sneezing, itchy eyes, a runny nose, or a scratchy throat. In severe cases, allergies can lead to asthma or even death.
Testing for allergies involves a review of someone’s symptoms and family history and a physical examination of the ears, nose, throat, chest, and skin. Skin testing and blood work also help to identify the problem. Testing a baby can be challenging, but an experienced doctor can make that diagnosis and start an effective treatment plan.
How allergies are treated depends on the severity of the symptoms. Treatments can be as non-invasive as avoiding the allergens. For example, a person allergic to pollen could avoid

spending time outdoors on high pollen count days or take a shower and change clothes after being outdoors. When symptoms are well managed, people with seasonal allergies can continue their day-to-day activities, even outdoors.
Medications and immunotherapy can relieve symptoms and even train your immune system not to overreact. Treatment options include over-the-counter and prescription medications, eye drops, nasal sprays, or immunotherapy, which involves a series of injections of purified allergen extracts or a tablet that dissolves under the tongue. For emergencies, the allergy sufferer carries an epinephrine shot at all times.
For people who would prefer to avoid medication for allergy symptoms, a new allergy therapy to look into is sublingual immunotherapy (an allergy drop taken at home). Holistic treatment options include acupuncture, using HEPA air filters in the house, allergy-proofing the home, nasal washes or sprays with saline solution, and even eating certain foods.
Seasonal allergies get a lot of press in the spring, but people can also be allergic to year-round culprits like medications,

foods, insects, latex, and animals. The rate of food allergies worldwide is increasing, and the range of foods to which people are allergic is growing. Parents can help decrease the likelihood of their child developing food allergies by breastfeeding exclusively (or as much as possible) for at least six months. Your child’s pediatrician can help you decide when to start introducing potentially allergenic foods— waiting too long can actually increase the risk of developing allergies.
Eggs, dairy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish are responsible for 90 percent of food allergies. In February 2024, the FDA approved a new monoclonal antibody, omalizumab, which shows great success in helping children with certain food allergies. This new antibody therapy can potentially protect children if they accidentally eat a food they are allergic to. It will be exciting to learn more about this treatment!
Asthma is a chronic lung disease and a severe condition. The lungs of someone with asthma are sensitive to certain stimuli or triggers, and seasonal allergies to things like pollen or mold can be one of those triggers. Asthma can be a life-threatening disease if not properly managed.
In the United States, about 20 million adults and more than six million children have asthma. The rate of asthma in children is increasing, and doctors are not sure why. Asthma is the most common chronic condition for children in the US and can start at any age, with most symptoms beginning by the age of five.
Treatments to manage asthma include bronchodilators designed to relax the muscles around the airways to move air and mucus through. Anti-inflammatory medications reduce swelling and mucus production and make breathing easier. For severe asthma, biologic therapies are used. A biologic is a medication made from the cells of a living organism. For asthma, they target antibodies, inflammatory molecules, or cell receptors. This helps disrupt what is causing the inflammation that leads to asthma symptoms.
With a wide range of treatment options and strategies, managing allergies and asthma is within your control. Take charge of your health and breathe easier this season!

Estate Planning Plan Early, Communicate Often
I often look to other authors or historical figures for inspiration when I’m writing. In many cases, someone has already written something that I want to express in a meaningful way. One of my favorite quotes from Benjamin Franklin is, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”These words of wisdom apply to much of life but are especially relevant when it comes to estate planning. It is a message echoed by shareholder and attorney James Tews of Koley Jessen law firm.
“I am a planner by nature,” James shares. “Helping individuals and families with the reality of death and the importance of estate planning is my passion.” People often avoid conversations about disability and death, he notes, but it’s important to discuss these issues before a loved one becomes incapacitated and is no longer able to handle their affairs. “Communication is vital, and conversations need to take place early when making estate decisions.”
These conversations can start at home, but expert advice is an important part of the process. The law and protocols around estate planning are in constant flux. For example, the tax laws surrounding exemptions for estate gifts have changed several times in the last few years, and that can mean the difference of millions of dollars. James meets with clients often to keep them abreast of the changing estate landscape.
“Plans are living documents and require adjustments along the way; I tell clients to revisit these issues frequently.” James provides not just legal expertise but also insight that he has gained during his years of experience. “One of my cardinal rules is to think long and hard about who you designate as your fiduciary (that is, the person to carry out your plans).” A good choice for a fiduciary is someone with integrity and with knowledge in the area of saving money. Choose someone who will not procrastinate, who knows when to seek professional help, and who has the time needed to administrate your wishes.
James is a native Nebraskan who grew up near Valley and earned three undergraduate degrees from Mount Marty College in Yankton, South Dakota. (Those degrees were in business administration, environmental science, and biology.) His passion for the law led him to Creighton University Law School and a law degree in 2003.
James has been a practicing attorney for 20 years. He was drawn to Koley Jessen because of the firm’s vision, foresight, and commitment to clients. The firm was founded in 1988, when Jim Koley, Paul Jessen, and four additional partners set out to establish a firm focused on being
By Deborah Daleya great place to work and providing over-the-top client service. The guiding principles of the firm’s culture—integrity, mutual respect, and client service—were what truly charted the firm’s path for future success.
“At the very heart of this firm is wanting to do for others in the best way possible,” James asserts. “I appreciate the culture and dedicated commitment. We don’t get comfortable here. We are constantly searching for ways to improve our practice and the client experience. At Koley Jessen, we are driven not by dollars but rather by service.”
Koley Jessen offers services in a variety of areas, including corporate and transactions, litigation, employment, and estate and succession planning, and has over 110 attorneys and 250 total team members.
Although it is challenging to balance his workload with his family of five, James finds it very fulfilling. He feels the key to success is time management.
“When I see my clients’ goals accomplished, I know I am doing the right thing,” he says. “Recently, I finished a will contest case that had lasted several years and had involved several hundred thousand dollars. We worked together to overturn the contest, and we won. My client broke down emotionally because of the toll the journey had taken but then broke into a big smile and was very grateful at the outcome.”
Another client who experienced a great level of satisfaction is Mark Kirlin. “James did a great job when my father passed away. He helped our family navigate the often-complex issues involving the state and associated legal matters,” Mark says. “James now does the legal work for my own estate plan.”
Dedicated commitment and advocacy for clients are hallmarks of the legal counsel of James Tews and his colleagues at Koley Jessen. Memory Loss
Understand It to Manage It
By Deborah DaleyThe population of the United States is growing older, and aging brings a host of health concerns.
One of the most perplexing and distressing is memory loss. Now, we all forget things from time to time—where we put our keys or our glasses, the name of a person we don’t know well, the password to one account or another. Some degree of memory slippage is a common part of aging. For some of us, the memory loss is more serious.
How do you know if a loved one’s memory loss is more than just a series of senior moments? Some signs that might indicate severe memory loss are asking the same questions over and over again, getting lost in places you are familiar with, or becoming confused about time, people, and places. If someone can no longer follow a recipe (or some similar set of directions), that’s cause for concern. In some cases, a person with memory loss might stop taking care of themselves, forgetting to do things like bathe or eat.
When in doubt, talk with a doctor. There are various levels of memory loss, and a professional assessment is critical. Some people feel embarrassed about these problems and try to hide symptoms or let family members compensate for their issues. This helps no one. It’s important to get a prompt diagnosis because, in many cases, the issue is treatable.
Some causes of reversible memory loss include medications, minor head trauma or injury, brain disease, hypothyroidism, or sleep apnea. A mental health issue like depression or anxiety
might be the cause. Alcoholism can impair mental abilities, as can a vitamin B-12 deficiency, which is common in seniors. A physician can perform tests and assessments, including brain scans, to determine the extent of the problem and its probable causes.
A physician might diagnose mild cognitive impairment (MCI) if the patient has more memory loss than other people their age but can still take care of themselves and do normal activities. People with MCI should see their doctor every six to 12 months and monitor any memory changes.
Dementia is not a normal part of aging. It is a loss of cognitive functions like thinking, remembering, and learning. It interferes with quality of life. Dementia goes beyond memory loss and includes problems with language skills, visual perception, and paying attention.
There are numerous types and causes of dementia. Diseases that cause progressive damage to the brain and, eventually, dementia include Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia,
frontotemporal dementia, Lewy body dementia, limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy, and more. The pathology and treatment of each of these conditions is very different, so it’s important to get an accurate diagnosis.
A recent study conducted on 29,000 adults shows evidence that eating a variety of foods, as well as reading or playing cards, can benefit dementia patients and lower the risk of mental problems. Other daily approaches that can lessen memory loss include physical activity, mental activity, spending time with others, staying organized, limiting distractions during tasks, sleeping well, eating a healthy diet, and managing chronic health problems.
Specialized treatment facilities exist to assist with care for people with severe memory loss. Memory care is the fastest growing sector of the senior housing market. These facilities decrease stress by offering a safe, structured environment with set routines. Specially trained staff are there to cope with unique issues that result from memory loss. Staff members ensure that the activities of daily living are completed. Activities are also designed to improve cognitive function and engage residents at various stages of their disease. To mitigate wandering, such facilities likely have alarmed doors, enclosed outdoor spaces, and even tracking bracelets.
If your loved one is no longer safe at home, it’s time for a different living arrangement, and memory care might be the answer. Is your loved one’s health at risk? Are their care needs beyond their capabilities? Is a family caregiver neglecting their own needs to care for an increasingly unhealthy loved one? Would the structure and interaction at a care facility benefit the person with memory loss?
Even when moving to a facility is the right choice, choosing the right facility can be tough. For help, check in with your loved one’s physician, AARP, and the Alzheimer’s Association’s Community Resource Finder. Be sure to visit each residence you’re considering.
Memory loss is a health issue that many senior citizens experience. Knowing the symptoms and potential causes of memory loss can lead to an earlier diagnosis and treatment. Enhancing your knowledge of resources and facilities can help you face the issue and support your loved one.

The Long, Hot Summer Looms Protect Your Pet Against the Heat
May 27th is National Heat Awareness Day.
It exists to remind us that keeping cool isn’t just about feeling comfortable—overheating can be a life-or-death situation for humans and animals alike. You need cool plans for your pets! Let’s take a look at how we can keep our furry friends cool this summer…before the dog days arrive.
First of all, how hot is too hot for a dog? It’s about the same as for humans, as it turns out. According to the American Kennel Club, a core body temperature over 104 degrees Fahrenheit is dangerous for a dog and can lead to organ failure. Signs that a dog is overheating can include excessive drooling, staggering, or failing to come when called.
The first step to prevent overheating is proper hydration. Keep your dog’s water bowl full and in the shade. If the heat index outside is above 90 degrees, it is a good idea to bring the dog inside to an air-conditioned environment. (If you’re uncomfortably hot outside, your dog probably is, too.) When you’re inside, play games with lower intensity, like tug-ofwar, or just chill out together.
Of course, your dog still needs to go outside to relieve itself—just don’t leave your pet outside for too long. You also need to continue to walk your pet in hot weather. Go in the early morning or late evening, if you can, to avoid the hottest part of the day. And don’t rush! All dogs love to stop and sniff. Choose a shady path. The pads on a dog’s feet are easily burned by hot sidewalks.
Many pet owners wonder if shaving their dog will help them beat the heat. It’s okay to get a summer cut to keep long fur manageable, but it’s important to remember that a dog’s fur is part of its natural temperature regulation. The undercoat keeps cool air close to the skin. If you interfere with this by shaving off the fur, it can actually make your dog more susceptible to overheating.
There are many tools to help you keep your dog safe from heat stroke. Cooling mats are better than hot ground. Raised beds allow for air circulation. Shaded kiddie pools with just an inch or two of water in the bottom can be refreshing. These are all available in pet shops. A fan blowing gently over a pan of ice placed out of the dog’s reach can cool you both down. Some dogs enjoy chewing an ice cube on a hard surface floor.
Experts agree that dogs with short noses and broad, flat foreheads are most susceptible to overheating. Breeds such
By Jackie Byersas Shi Tzu, pug, Boston terrier, and bulldog are prone to heat stroke. Overweight dogs are also at higher risk. Working and herding dogs may not feel hot. They just go about their tasks until heat stroke occurs. Exercise caution in the heat on your pet’s behalf.
Many behaviors can indicate heat stroke in dogs, but it’s not always clear cut. Panting and drooling are natural behaviors that help dogs cool off. Excessive panting and drooling, on the other hand, are early danger signs of overheating. What qualifies as excessive? That varies from animal to animal. You know your dog best, so keep an eye out for unusual behavior.
More advanced signs of overheating including staggering, listlessness, ignoring your commands, falling, and vomiting. As a dog’s temperature nears 105 degrees, heat stroke is about to occur. Pet-safe thermometers are available for purchase, but checking a dog’s rectal temperature is no picnic. Your watchful eye on your pet when the weather gets hot is the best prevention.
When you see signs of overheating, get your dog to the veterinarian or animal hospital—fast. This is one time you should keep the car windows open and turn on the air conditioning at full blast. You should alert the vet that you are coming so they can be ready to receive your pet. If you have someone to ride with you, have that person offer water to your dog on the way. Also, like humans in hot weather, dogs may be off their feed. If your dog has diarrhea when the weather is very hot, head to the vet right away.
Our pets may feel uncomfortable, but they might not know what to do about it. Protecting them from heat stroke is up to us! Take these simple preventative steps and watch for signs of overheating. With your help and attention, your pet can have a safe, fun summer!

Mr. Market Finds a Shiny New Bauble
Nvidia’s Big Day Out
By George MorganMr. Market spent most of 2023 fretting over the Fed’s interest rate gyrations. Shortly after the start of 2024, he got bored and went looking for a shiny new bauble to bash around. For several months now, artificial intelligence has been flaunted by the financial media as the wave of the tech future, and AI chip pioneer Nvidia has been dubbed the new Amazon.
As we progressed through the fourth quarter earnings season, it became clear that Wall Street and their enablers in the financial media were waiting with bated breath for Nvidia to release their earnings after the market closed on a Wednesday. The CNBC talking heads sat with mikes in hand as the Nvidia numbers trickled painstakingly across the news wire. Then—bada bing, bada boom!—Nvidia announced revenues that exceeded the analysts’ bodacious expectations by a gazillion percent. The futures markets for the S&P and Nasdaq jumped three quarters of a percent without even delving into the numbers.
The next morning, the market opened up, in line with the futures. Within a nano-second of the opening, the trading volume exploded to 20 times its normal rate. Because of the volume and the speed with which prices jumped, this had to be computer-generated; humans are incapable of manually producing this level of activity.
The initial culprits were the algorithm traders. Algorithm traders program their computers to look for trip-wire words in the news feeds. While the trigger words were related to Nvidia, their computers didn’t discriminate—they bought everything in sight. They started the day with zero inventory and the rapidly increasing prices allowed them to sell at a profit just minutes later. They had no intention of investing for the long, or even the intermediate, term. Their goal was to take the money and run.
The blood in the water attracted the high-speed traders to the fray. Their computers are programmed to search the primary exchanges, looking for orders that allow them to buy a stock on one exchange and then sell it, fractions of a second later, at a higher price on another exchange. Like the algorithm dudes, the high-speed traders start the day owning nothing and end the day the same way. On a normal day, their activity accounts for 80 percent of the total number of trades made. This day was no exception.
Mom and Pop did not participate in Mr. Market’s hissy fit for multiple reasons. The first reason is that 45 percent of their assets are in robo accounts managed by investment professionals. The second reason is that those who do make their own trades only hold 10 percent of their assets in individual stocks, which are held at one of the three major discount/internet brokerage firms. On an average day, the retail volume from the internet brokerage firms is 25 million shares, which is 0.0004 percent of the over 6 billion shares traded that day.
The mutual funds are also not suspects in the madness because they trade large blocks of shares in the dark pools that are run by Morgan Stanley and Salomon Brothers. These trades are made away from the exchanges and do not appear in the volume numbers.
About 45 minutes after the market opened, the activity dropped back to normal levels, but the prices continued to trickle upward until mid afternoon, when they flattened out. Of the three major indexes, only the S&P and Nasdaq were involved. The Dow stayed on the sidelines because it contains only 30 stocks, which are concentrated in plain Jane industrial companies. At the end of the trading day, the S&P 500 was up 1.8 percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq rose an eye-popping 2.7 percent. The Dow gained a meager 0.04 percent.
This whole palaver was sparked by Nvidia. At the end of the day, its price was up 14.3 percent, but on normal volume. On the list of the most active stocks that day were four index fund ETFs. One was an S&P 500 fund, one was a Nasdaq fund, and the other two were leveraged versions of the Nasdaq 100.
Investing is not a one-size-fits-all situation, so the impact of Mr. Market’s shenanigans varies from individual to individual. For active investors, this day provided a profit-taking opportunity. For those who rely on a trusted financial advisor, insight into this event can help them better understand their professional advice. For those who manage their own account, this should reinforce the importance of the “forget the needle; buy the haystack” approach.

A Rose by Any Other Name… Choosing Rose Alternatives
By Linda SutherlandRoses are loved by millions of people throughout the world, but roses do not always perform the way we want them to. They can be a bit picky about their surroundings, and sometimes they just don’t do well in gardens. That said, the charm and beauty of roses cannot be denied. If you’re struggling to bring roses to life in your garden, why not grow some flowers that look like roses but are not quite so…thorny?
My top pick for “most likely to look like a rose” is ranunculus, also known as buttercups. These stunning spring flowers have rose-like blossoms and come in beautiful colors. Ranunculus is a cool season perennial that comes in multilayered flowers. They have long stems (up to 20 inches) that make this plant a top-notch choice for cutting. The bulbs are commonly planted in the spring and bloom in the summer. These blossoms love full sunshine and warm climates. One caveat: They are annuals in most zones, so the bulbs need to be dug up in the fall and stored in a cool, dry place.
Another flower that really resembles roses, and also has a short bloom life, is the peony. The flowers of peonies look just like wild roses, and they are eye-catching because of their fluffy, frilly petals and their big, plump heads. They are famous for blooming around Memorial Day and they never, ever disappoint.
Camellia is a striking beauty that looks like a rose but has arch-shaped petals. The camellia is a flowering evergreen shrub with dark, glossy leaves and large, lush blossoms that almost always come in red, pink, or white. Peonies and camellias are very long-lived plants and can provide years of blooms.
My favorite flower of all time is the amazing gardenia. These flowers are intoxicating, with their creamy white petals and their shiny dark green leaves. To me, this exquisite flower checks all the boxes. The fragrance is outstanding, and they look just like white roses. They are shrubs, but they can be trained to be a small tree or bush. I grew up in San Antonio, and we had gardenia bushes outside of my bedroom windows. When I picture them, I can still smell that incredible fragrance. Gardenias are typically only hardy in Zones 8 to 11. Now that I live in a cooler zone, I always bring mine into the

Double-flowered tulips also look so much like roses! They bloom later in the season and hold their flowers longer than single tulips, and they don’t grow quite as tall. These long-lasting beauties resemble peonies because they have so many petals and because their large heavy blooms may need some staking. Whether you leave them in the garden or cut them for stunning floral arrangements, they are truly something to behold. One thing to keep in mind is that the vigor of double-flowered tulips declines somewhat every year until, eventually, the plants have no blooms. Because of this, these tulips are considered annuals and should be dug up and stored every year.
Dahlias are another nice alternative to roses. Dahlias symbolize elegance, strength, and creativity, and they look striking and beautiful in a bouquet. Also, some varieties are simply gigantic (up to 6 feet tall with 10-inch blooms) and stand alone in their quality and structure. This species is tough and hardy.
Lisianthus is another favorite of mine. Though they look very much like roses, they are not as expensive. Lisianthus blooms are often referred to as the “super rose” because of the elegance and charm that they exude. One of the most striking features of the lisianthus is its wide range of colors and petal varieties. Each bloom showcases multiple layers of petals that create an exquisite and luxurious look similar to a rose in bloom.
Lisianthus also has an amazing vase life because its sturdy stems and ability to retain moisture allow it to last for an extended period of time. This “super rose” reputation extends to the growing experience, as well. Lisianthus has a low-maintenance upkeep and basically requires minimal care.
If you think that you want all the “feels” of rose bushes but you are not sure you are up to the task of taking care of roses, consider one or more of these great alternatives that require half the time and money and will give you years of enjoyment. And don’t forget the last advantage to rose alternatives—no thorns. That’s right, none of these lookalike flowers will draw blood when you come for a clipping.
Live Healthy, Longer! Passer Restorative Therapies
Jeffrey Passer, MD, wants his patients to look younger, live healthier, and feel better. Since 1980, Dr. Passer has been running the innovative, restorative health practice Passer Restorative Therapies. He aims to help women and men achieve their goals in weight management, nutrition, anti-aging, and wellness therapies to last a lifetime, even if you’re 95 years old!
From hormone replacement therapy to thyroid replacement therapy, from anti-aging therapies to weight loss, Dr. Passer has your back. “I’ve been interested in weight management and metabolic disease or longevity medicine for a long time,” Dr. Passer explains. “I’ve always been what you might call a disruptive physician. I don’t always follow standard medical recommendations.”
The anti-aging industry gets a lot of attention, but Dr. Passer prefers to think of it as just healthy living. He spends a lot of time researching not just lifespan extension but “health span” extension. That means living not
By Janette Calabrojust longer, but healthier, too. He recommends lifestyle changes that can kick out big hitters like diabetes complications, cardiovascular challenges, Alzheimer’s disease, and cancer. What does he recommend?
As it turns out, the key lifestyle changes he recommends are nothing we haven’t heard before…but we may not really be following the guidelines. In short, he recommends a good diet, sufficient exercise, high-quality sleep,
and positive social relationships. “These things don’t require medication or expenditure, other than time and spending a little more at the grocery store to make wise choices,” Dr. Passer points out.
At Passer Restorative Therapies, the protocol is individualized and personalized for each patient. An appointment often starts with collecting lifestyle history and family history, as well as specialized blood tests measuring metabolic and genetic factors. The Age Manager Program measures biological age (not chronological age) with methyl markers. There’s body fat analysis and even a blood test that screens for cancer, if the patient wants it done. On the first appointment, expect to talk about sleep hygiene, nutrition, and a commitment to lifestyle changes.
“Everybody has a set of genes,” Dr. Passer says. “Your genes have a coating that acts as a light switch. You can turn them on and turn them off, which can age you faster or slower. Your lifestyle affects about 80 percent of those biological markers; only 20 percent of it is genetic.”
Genes can change, he says, and that’s where a patient can turn their risk around. “The basic goal is to extend your health span so you can live a healthy life,” Dr. Passer asserts.
Dr. Passer believes that sugar is addictive and is one of the biggest diet culprits of disease today—much worse than fat. “A high-fat diet is not that bad,” he says. “It’s only when you combine it with sugar that it becomes worse than sugar by itself.” He notes that some of the largest health risks in our society today are cardiovascular disease and prediabetes, but the fact that they’re common doesn’t make them inevitable! Risk can be measured and reduced. “As you change from a
high-carbohydrate diet to a low-carbohydrate Mediterranean-type diet, you can lose weight, decrease your insulin level, and decrease damage to the vascular system,” he says. “That way, you don’t end up with heart attacks or strokes.”
Longtime patient Steve D. says, “Jeff Passer has been my primary care doctor for more than 20 years. I am a 60-year-old man, but I feel and act like I am 35. Jeff has always been there to counsel, help, monitor, and treat me through the years. He is an excellent physician and a caring human being.”
Dr. Passer believes that the implementation of healthy aging and longevity carries great promise for the future. Effective weight-loss drugs, when properly prescribed under medical supervision, are an important tool. The ability to measure disease risk in each individual patient means that disease is preventable for a longer period of time.
“If you slow down aging, you slow down disease, and we can slow down aging for sure,” Dr. Passer asserts, if we think of aging as a disease that we can treat. “The wave of the future is getting the government to fund research on medications or supplements that are specifically designed to slow down aging.” This will also lower the costs of health care. If the medical community can spend its resources preventing chronic disease instead of treating it, the price tag decreases overall. Instead of limited existence under the care of skilled nurses, Dr. Passer concludes, “people can be out enjoying their lives.” Doesn’t that sound fantastic?

Parenting Siblings?
Time to Resign!
“Middle child: the one who secretly keeps the family from falling apart.” —Unknown
Growing up as a middle child in a family of six kids, I found myself getting really proficient at playing mediator, referee, and therapist. I have two older sisters and three younger brothers. Somehow, I got it in my head that it was MY job to make sure all of the siblings were happy. For example, sister number one mad at brother number two? I can fix this! Brother number one hurt by sister number two? No problem. I’ve got this.
Every single one of my siblings has an incredibly strong personality. Back then, I viewed myself as the one who thrived in a crisis… and there were lots of those. Soon, with all of those strong siblings, and their spouses joining the herd, keeping everyone happy was a full-time job with minimal benefits.
“No matter what you do, someone will always be unhappy. Let it be.”—Unknown
Then, Dad passed, and two years later, Mom passed. I immediately gave myself a promotion! Holiday dinners? I planned them. Held them. I delved right into the role of surrogate parent. Now, my parents were two of the best people I have ever known. The amazing part of this story is that all six of us “kids” still feel this way toward our parents. Try living up to that act!
“Freedom begins when you come to a point where you have no need to impress anyone.”—Unknown
By Janet Van deWalleAs the decades went by (my parents passed in the early 1990s), I realized I was fighting an uphill battle. There was absolutely no way… NO WAY… to keep everyone happy. And I begin to realize that I needed to relinquish the crown.
Taking a step back, I had time to reflect on my relationships with family and friends. Thanks to Manny, I began researching, learning, and trying really hard to practice healthy relationships. It hasn’t been easy. Old habits are hard to break! It all starts with a decision.
“This is one of the marks of a truly safe person: they are comfortable.”—Henry Cloud
Healthy relationship requirements? Respect, boundaries, mutual love, compassion, sincere apologies, truth, honesty, and caring. Nowhere does it say that one sibling tries to be the fixer of others’ relationships. Nowhere does it describe triangular relationships. Nowhere does it say to disrespect boundaries. No where does it say it is one person’s responsibility to hold a family, or any relationship, together. It takes everyone in the relationship to work on the relationship.
“I can’t give you a sure-fire formula for success, but I can give you a formula for failure: try to please everybody all the time.”— Anonymous
What does all this mean for me, as surrogate parent? I now…officially…resign!

They have an array of plates in several styles and flatware in several finishes plus a huge selection of colored napkins and matching table covers. They also have tables (rectangular, round, or cocktail types) and several styles of chairs.

There are many specialty items that can create a focal point on a buffet table, like the gleaming giant turtle which offers a serving option for charcuterie under the shell. Another crowd pleaser is the chocolate fountain, fun for any type of gathering. The staff suggest that choosing serving pieces is much easier if you already have your menu established. The Honeyman’s staff will help you find just the right serving pieces to highlight your culinary selections.
Honeyman’s has many beverage glasses in all shapes and sizes, including copper Moscow mule mugs. Hosts looking to dispense novelty drinks might choose a margarita or slushie machine.

Kids Are People, Too… But Are They the Same as Adults?
I was talking recently with a couple of my younger friends who had asked about jobs I’ve held over the years. I described substitute teaching for nearly 25 years in elementary and middle schools for OPS and operating a tutoring program for students of all ages for another 10 years. They were curious about teaching so many different subjects and ages. I explained that I primarily taught kids how to learn rather than what to learn, including study skills and test-taking strategies.
Kai was especially interested in test-taking strategies because she is studying to qualify as an EMT and has a major test coming up. We talked about how different test types require different strategies. We also talked about test anxiety and methods of dealing with it. I pointed out that some subjects, such as applying medical techniques or treating emergencies, require specific knowledge, while others, such as determining a general approach to treatment, seek a more general understanding of the material.
Carl asked if it was difficult working with people of so many different ages, experiences, and backgrounds. I explained my philosophy, which includes several attitudes: people are people, no matter their age; everyone deserves respect; approach life with a sense of humor; and stay in touch
By Marge Shoemakerwith the child within. I’ve included these often in this column when I say, “Kids are people, too,” or “There’s no such thing as a dumb question…but there are dumb answers.”
Kai commented that she’d read some of my columns and said, “I just finished a class on human growth. When you write about people and then say kids are people, too, does that mean you think of kids as miniature adults?” She reminded me that kids go through lots of changes as they grow up. They’re dealing with changing hormone levels and all sorts of challenges that they’re not always prepared for. “They’re not all the same, so how can you lump them together?” she asked.
These 30-something kids made me aware of possible misunderstandings that might have occurred through the years. I do know that we all are individuals and that there’s seldom a “one-size-fits-all” solution to any problem. I will, in the future, try to be more aware of how I arrange my thoughts in this column and how they might be misunderstood. I just try to present different approaches to the situations I write about. My intentions are to share some of what my friends have gone through and how they’ve managed problems, in an effort to help others going through similar difficulties.
I hope I’ve started some conversations. Let me know what you think.
Auto Wise Spring Vehicle Maintenance
Spring has sprung, and this is a good time of year to clean out your closets and accomplish spring vehicle maintenance.Yes, I know you would rather be sitting in the yard, enjoying nature, than be thinking about vehicle maintenance, but you will be glad you took care of it! With a little organization and a few appointments, you can have this vehicle maintenance stuff down to a science.
First up are those pesky windshield wipers. We all know that windshield wipers wear out very quickly and with little fanfare, so it’s a good idea to have your windshield wipers replaced regularly. Then you’ll be perfectly prepared for driving in the spring rains that are hopefully coming our way.
While you’re examining your wipers, be sure to look carefully at the windshield itself for chips or cracks that might need attention. Even a small chip can suddenly turn to a large crack if you hit a pothole! Visibility is so vital to safe driving that it’s actually illegal to drive with certain types of windshield cracks. If you get caught driving with a crack directly in the driver’s field of view, with intersecting cracks, or with two cracks within three inches of each other, you can get a citation. Be sure to check with your insurance company before hiring someone to work on your windshield—a comprehensive policy may well cover windshield replacement, but liability will not.
Experts recommend that you check your oil, transmission fluid, and radiator antifreeze levels once a month (or before you set out on a trip that’s longer than 100 miles). Good news for those of us without time to visit the dealership on a monthly basis: your mechanic will be happy to show you how to check these fluids on your own vehicle.
It’s really smart to have your oil changed approximately every 5,000 miles. In all my years of driving, I have always been diligent about getting my oil changed (thanks, Dad!). Most oil manufacturers recommend changing the oil filter with every other oil change. Saturated oil filters can lower the efficiency of your engine, so make sure to have the oil filter checked every time you have your oil changed.
Just like oil, transmission fluid deteriorates over time. You should have your automatic transmission system flushed and the fluid replaced about every 45,000 miles.
Our vehicles can’t get from point A to point B without tires, so it’s best to keep yours in optimum shape. Manufacturers recommend that you have your tires rotated every 7,500 miles, but check your owner’s manual for details, too. You also want to maintain even wear and tear on your tires by having them balanced every 5,000 to 6,000 miles. While your vehicle is up on the lift, your mechanic can check the wheel alignment.
By Linda SutherlandHow about the health of your car battery? We probably think about car batteries more often in the winter, but extreme heat can affect their performance, too. Manufacturers recommend that you get your battery tested at least twice a year. The more extreme the temperatures in your particular area, the faster a battery will wear down. If you live in an area where you endure very cold winters, you should definitely have your battery tested in the spring and fall. It is also a very good idea to replace your battery every four to five years.
Driving (and even parking) during very hot weather can bring a host of problems for you and your vehicle. Extreme heat can cause fluids like engine oil, transmission fluid, and coolant to evaporate more quickly. This results in decreased lubrication and cooling efficiency, which can ultimately cause overheating or engine damage. To keep the effects of extreme heat to a minimum, make sure to park your car in the shade whenever you can. Maintain proper tire pressure at all times, and make sure that your air conditioning is cooling efficiently. Be mindful of your air conditioning usage, and have the system serviced if it is not cooling properly.
Lastly, you should have a hot weather safety kit in the car. The kit should include a well-maintained spare tire, a tire pressure gauge, jumper cables, a first aid kit, and some bottles of water. There’s more daylight in the summer, but a flashlight is still a good idea, as are a phone charger and a multi-tool kit. I always toss in a few granola bars, too. You never know what situation you will be in, and you always want to be prepared for life on the open road. Let’s hear it for spring and summer road trips!

Holiday by Atria Rolling Hills Ranch Independent Senior
Living
Thankfully, many seniors are aging better and living longer. In fact, the 65-plus age group is one of the fastest growing groups in the county, rising 38 percent since 2010. This population will reach 80.8 million in 2040. Many of us (I am 69 myself) are making decisions about where we would like to live out our golden years. If independent senior living is the option you desire, consider Holiday by Atria Rolling Hills Ranch. This facility in northwest Omaha offers an independent but family-like community, complete with living accommodations, food, activities, and socialization.
Tabitha Hathaway is the General Manager of Rolling Hills Ranch. She is responsible for building operations, personnel, activities, financial administration, marketing, and more. There are 22 staff members employed at Rolling Hills Ranch. If a resident needs assistance, they’ll find someone available to help 365 days a year. “I believe we make life better for our residents,” Tabitha shares. “They enjoy apartment-style living at its best, but we are so much
By Deborah Daleymore. There is a sense of family here.”
Holiday by Atria has more than 150 facilities throughout the United States and Canada. The company’s extensive experience was a huge selling point for Tabitha, who grew up in Topeka, Kansas, and studied nursing at Missouri Southern University.
The opportunity to put her nursing background to good use by working for Holiday by Atria is what drew Tabitha to
A Few Words From One Of Our Advertisers:
“I began advertising with Women’s Edition starting with the November 2019 issue and I have been thrilled with the results! I’ve had numerous new clients come to the gallery because they saw my ads in Women’s Edition, even as I’ve been working by appointment in recent months due to the pandemic. Most had never been to downtown Ralston, where I’m located, so introducing them to our town and what we have to offer has been another benefit!
The advertising has resulted not only in sales, but also in new followers on my social media platforms and new newsletter subscribers. Together with their outstanding customer service and sales results, advertising with Women’s Edition has been one of the best investments I’ve ever made for my business. Thank you, Women’s Edition!”
—Debra Joy GroesserOmaha. “I wanted to take care of people, especially seniors,” Tabitha says. She has now been with the corporation for 10 years and is proud to spend her time making sure that members of the senior population are seen and heard. “I want to be their voice and advocate for them.”
Residents have different reasons for choosing independent senior living, Tabitha continues. “For some, a spouse has passed, and they want a different environment. For others, it might be that they are lonely and want more socialization. It is important to figure out those reasons and determine the best option for senior living.”
Rolling Hills Ranch is open to individuals 55 and older who live independently. If residents need additional health maintenance, they can arrange for third-party health providers to provide services or can have family members come in to help. A third-party health provider is also available on site, at an additional cost. Services can include things like medication support or bathing assistance. They also offer housekeeping and individual-life alerts. Studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments are available at Rolling Hills Ranch, with pricing based on square footage. Currently, about 110 people live in the community.
What Tabitha loves most about Rolling Hills Ranch is how independence can still feel like family. “Our residents decorate their own apartments, have guests, and can come and go as they please, with no curfew. We introduce them to every staff member with a meet-and-greet reception. Everyone knows everyone here!”
Dottie, a current community member, feels very comfortable with the arrangement. “I like the people who work here
and the people who live here,” she says. “People are happy here, and you feel that. This was the first place I looked at, and I visited five others. I came back here because I felt comfortable here.”
Tabitha is quick to note that moving out of the family home is no small task. For many people, it is challenging to make the leap, both emotionally and in terms of the physical move itself. “Many of our residents lived in their family home for decades, and it’s a big step to move,” she says. “We work very hard to relieve their anxiety and make them feel comfortable and happy. Quality of life is very important to us.”
In addition to providing meals, Rolling Hills Ranch offers an exercise room and classes, seminars, and entertainment at least once a week, as well as other activities, games, parties, and more. The community offers many opportunities to be involved!
Welcoming pets is another important part of making the facility feel like home. Some seniors stay in a less-than-optimal living situation because they don’t want to leave their furry family members behind. At Rolling Hills Ranch, pets are welcome and become part of the family. One of the recent activities was a cooking class in which residents made pet-friendly treats.
If you are a senior who wants to live independently but in an active, social, family-like environment, Holiday by Atria Rolling Hills Ranch is definitely worth a look. Too Much Fun in the Sun?
Skin
Cancer 101
Many of our ancient ancestors worshipped the sun. That’s not too surprising—the sun brought warmth and light to their world just as it does to ours. However, medical research has shown us that too much sun exposure can cause skin problems, including deadly skin cancer. In fact, one in five of us will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. On average, more than two people die of skin cancer in the United States every hour. The good news is that, when detected early, the five-year survival rate for the most common skin cancer is 99 percent. Let’s take a few minutes to learn more about risks and remediation.
Skin cancer is an abnormal growth of skin cells, which is usually caused by the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. The type of skin cancer is determined by the type of cells in which the cancer begins. Common types of skin cancer include basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, and actinic keratosis.
Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer. It looks like a flesh-colored, pearl-like bump or a pinkish patch of skin. BCCs usually develop after years of frequent sun exposure or indoor tanning.
Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common type of skin cancer. This cancer often looks like a firm red bump, a scaly patch, or a sore that heals and then re-opens. SCC tends to form on skin that gets frequent sun exposure, such as the rim of the ear, face, neck, arms, chest, and back.
Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer because it tends to spread. It frequently develops in a mole or suddenly appears as a new dark spot on the skin. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial.
Actinic keratoses are dry, scaly patches or spots. They are precancerous growths that can develop into squamous cell carcinoma.
Cancer is not the only problem associated with overexposure to the sun. Premature aging of the skin can occur, making the skin thick, wrinkled, and leathery. Scientists have also found that overexposure to UV radiation may suppress proper functioning of the body’s immune system and the skin’s natural defenses.
Overexposure to the sun can also cause cataracts and other eye damage. Research has shown that UV radiation increases the likelihood of certain cataracts. Although curable with modern eye surgery, cataracts diminish the eyesight of millions of Americans. Other kinds of eye damage include pterygium (tissue growth that can block vision), skin cancer around the eyes, and degeneration of the macula (the part of the retina where visual perception is most acute).
By Deborah DaleyThere are many ways to protect yourself from sun damage. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun when possible. Wear sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15. Wear clothing with a tight weave or that has a high SPF rating. Wear widebrimmed hats and sunglasses that have UV protection and side panels. When outdoors, take breaks in shaded areas.
Sunscreen is a great tool, but you need to follow some basic rules. Use sunscreen daily, even if it is cloudy. Apply one ounce of sunscreen 30 minutes before you go outside. Make sure your sunscreen is water-resistant, and reapply every hour if you’re swimming or sweating. Use a lip balm or lipstick with SPF. Don’t forget to protect ears, feet, and the back of the neck and head.
The same rules apply to children. Use extra protection for babies younger than six months. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends brimmed hats, protective clothing that covers the arms and legs, and staying in the shade as much as possible. Limit the time young children spend in direct sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are most intense.
If you’re concerned about a growth on your skin, call your dermatologist. Otherwise, skin checks every two to three years are sufficient for 80 percent of us, says Dr. Katherine Brag, a dermatologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. As I get older, I have more moles and crinkly skin. I recently went to a skin check-up, and they identified a potentially problematic mole. They took a cancer biopsy, and I was fine. It’s better to be safe than sorry!
Changes to the planet’s atmosphere also change our exposure levels to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. We can still enjoy the sun, but it’s important to take precautions against the damage its rays can cause. That way, our time in the sun can be fun and safe!

Here Comes the Sun Protect Yourself This Summer With Shade!
By Anne YankusWith winter firmly in the rear-view mirror, we can focus on the issues that come with living and working in warmer weather…issues like extended hours of direct sunlight. More sunlight is generally better for everyone’s mental health, but too much sun can be a net negative for our homes, offices, and eyeballs.
One of the best ways to enjoy the outdoors for hours on end is to seek out shade. Fortunately, we don’t have to wait years for our saplings to grow—there are manufactured shade products galore! Sun shades have a lot of value outside of just keeping paint from fading or preventing afternoon blindness. Shades can increase your home’s curb appeal, expand your living space, increase privacy, and, of course, eliminate glare. Sun shades can also help you save on energy bills. A high-quality shade doesn’t just block sunlight but also reduces solar heat, which can decrease the workload of your air conditioner by up to 20 percent. With summers getting hotter every year, that’s a savings no one can argue against!
Umbrellas are a nice option if you’re looking to shade a smaller patio or uncovered deck area. Pop-up market or patio umbrellas are supported by a central pole, sometimes attached to a table. Large, cantilevered umbrellas have an offset support base, which allows for complete shade from above without sacrificing space for support structures in the middle of your patio set. A pergola is a more permanent alternative, as it is a freestanding structure with a lattice roof. A pergola can be used for partial shade with just the lattice or as a structure to which you can attach blinds, screens, or slats.
There are lots of different shading products on the market. Outdoor patio shades or curtains function similar to indoor window dressings in that they attach to your deck, porch, or other outdoor structure and can be lowered and raised. They are designed to block UV rays while allowing airflow, and they come in a variety of colors and textures.
If you want to cover a larger area closer to your home or other building, consider an awning. They come in a wide range of sizes, from five to 40 feet long and projecting as far as 11 feet outward. They are designed to block up to 98 percent of UV rays and can be fashioned over windows, doors, patios, decks, or balconies. Some awnings are retractable. Retractable awnings, such as Eclipse Shading awnings, come in motorized or manual models.
Walk-In Baths with PennAire Micro Bubble Technology
“It has been a God-send. Larry fell in the tub three times before and we’re able to bathe safely, avoid home health as long as possible, and I can just take care of him at home and Penners made that possible.” ~ Larry & Janice Johnson, Cozad
The Dream Spa has many amazing features:
• Wide door for easy entry
• Shower wand to soap up and shampoo with ease
• Heated seat and air to keep you warm
• Safe entry — no step-in required
• Standard tub space — no remodeling
• Unlimited designs — millions of options
“From the initial visit and estimate to the final cleanup and every step in between, they were always reachable, communicated well and were respectful of our home.”
Mike & Krisa M. La Vista, NEIf you’re looking for something with the size of an awning and the flexibility of a freestanding umbrella, you may want to check out sun sails or canopies. They require minimal hardware and are usually suspended between posts or trees to provide shade to larger patios or areas away from a building.
For a more natural shade option, you may want to consider planting shady trees. Trees and climbing vines are excellent options for providing shade without cutting down on airflow. For maximum protection from UV rays, you’ll want to plant tree species that have denser canopies closer to the ground. The only downside is that it may take some years for the plants to grow to their optimal size—be sure to ask your landscaper’s advice on species.
How do all these shading options stack up when it comes to UV protection? Retractable awnings take the prize by blocking 98 to 100 percent of all UV rays (that’s comparable to wearing SPF 50 sunscreen or UPF clothing). Next down the line would be sun sails, which block approximately 90 percent of UV rays, on par with SPF 15 sunscreen. Umbrellas clock in farther down the list, at 70 percent protection, and curtain-free pergolas are at the bottom, with approximately 60 percent protection. More protection from UV rays is generally better, but you’ll want to choose the shading option that’s best for your space, aesthetic, and budget.
More complex shading systems like awnings should come with a warranty. With proper care and maintenance, an awning should last you five to 15 years, and most awning companies offer warranty options to choose from. Five-year warranties often cover all parts of the awning frame and its finish, whereas the more robust 10-year warranties can expand that coverage to include the awning shade itself.
With all the options on the market, there’s no reason for you to be caught outside in the sun with no protection. Why not enjoy the fresh air this summer by making your outdoor space a cool, comfortable place to work and relax? You’ll have it made in the shade.

Good Life
Mother’s Day at the Spa
Celebrate the Important Women in Your Life
Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and many of us are looking for ways to say thank you for the love, devotion, and selfless sacrifices our mothers provide throughout the year. Many moms put the needs of others before themselves without taking time for their own well-being. If you want to give your mom something special on her special day, consider a spa experience. It’s a gift that provides pampering and relaxation to benefit both mind and body, and it can be some time for herself or a fun day with you!
Day and salon spas offer various services but do not provide overnight accommodations. This is a great option for those who do not want to stay somewhere overnight or travel. Destination spas usually evoke images of a “spa getaway” and provide a total experience that includes accommodations, healthy meals, fitness and wellness activities, and topnotch spa treatments. Many resorts and hotels have excellent spas, fitness centers, and wellness programs.
Spas have a wide range of services and price points. Typical services include massages, facials, manicures, pedicures, waxing, skin peels, and microdermabrasion.
There are many types of massages. A Swedish massage uses a gentle touch to promote relaxation and decrease muscle tension. Deep tissue massages use increased pressure to release muscle tightness, reduce stiffness, and treat chronic pain. Trigger point massages focus on a knot or tight spot, which can help with chronic pain. Lymphatic massages promote the flow of lymphatic fluid, which is helpful for people with inflammation. Prenatal massages help expectant mothers relax and reduce aches and pains.
The benefits of a facial include deep cleansing, hydration, plumping, and skin rejuvenation. A classic facial will start with a consultation, followed by steaming, cleansing, exfoliation, toning, skin analysis with extractions, mask or serum application, and a facial massage. Hydration facials focus on moisturization to soften and plump the skin. Acne facials concentrate on extraction for those who experience breakouts. Anti-aging facials focus on skin tightening and reducing fine lines and wrinkles. A glow facial boosts skin glow through exfoliation techniques.
Manicures have evolved to encompass a wide variety of options. Popular choices include classic (natural nail), French, acrylic, shellac, gel, or dip powder.
The classic manicure usually includes a hand soak, trimming, filing, buffing, cuticle grooming, hand massage, and polish application. A traditional French manicure uses natural-colored nail polish topped off with a white tip. Acrylics are popular among those who want stiletto or coffin-shaped nails. An acrylic manicure uses a liquid powder nail enhancement that hardens and is very strong.
Gel manicures use pure gel nail polish for durability and shine. Shellac is a trademarked hybrid gel nail polish that combines gel and regular nail polish for better wear and
durability. Dip powder manicures consist of a powder and glue combination that bonds to the nail.
By Angella ArndtSeveral pedicure options are available for pampering feet. Common choices include classic, shellac, gel, hot stone, and sports pedicures. A sports pedicure is an excellent option for athletes or those with overused feet.
Many salons offer waxing services for unwanted hair. Waxing can remove hair from areas like lips, chins, underarms, arms, legs, and bikini areas and reshape eyebrows.
Chemical peels are a noninvasive way to improve skin appearance. They can improve skin texture, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, reduce acne breakouts, and even out skin tone. A chemical solution is applied to peel off dead skin cells to reveal the underlying healthy skin.
Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure using a special instrument to exfoliate the uppermost layer of skin. This process can improve the look and feel of skin by helping new skin cell growth, revealing newer skin, and thickening the protein collagen that keeps skin firm.
Spa packages may also include hydrotherapy, steam rooms, and saunas. Many packages offer sumptuous lunches that include wine or champagne. If you don’t find a package that meets your needs, ask about customizing a spa experience.
How do you choose the right spa? First, identify goals for the visit. Are you interested in relaxation, rejuvenation, or stress relief? What services are essential? Are you seeking amenities like a swimming pool, sauna, steam room, or fitness center? Make sure that service providers are appropriately trained and licensed. Another important consideration is your budget. Setting priorities for your desired services and experience will help you select the best option.
Spa packages are a wonderful Mother’s Day gift and a great way to celebrate all the influential women in your life, like daughters and grandmothers. A spa day is also an excellent way to pamper and reenergize yourself.

Show You Care
Make a Choice
Kindness and compassion…I sometimes feel as if this way of treating others has evolved to be a very old-fashioned way of living. It feels as if these traits have gone the way of the 1957 Chevys, the hula hoops, and the poodle skirts.
My parents both grew up on farms in western Nebraska. Now, those neighbors really understood the importance of being kind and helping out. Someone broke their leg when it was time to bring in the corn? The neighbors showed up, brought in the corn, and made a party out of it. It was what they all did for one another.
I grew up in the city, but that neighborly compassion was still the norm. Someone under the weather? Neighbors would shovel snow, cut grass, and bring over chicken noodle soup.
“People glorify all sorts of bravery except the bravery they might show on behalf of their nearest neighbors.”
—George EliotNow, this is not to discount the GoFundMe dollars that flow to those in need online. I appreciate all the people who dig down into their wallets and give what they can. The old ways of showing compassion are just at a different level of up close and personal effort. Let’s face it, everyone is incredibly busy. For many of us, time is more precious than money. It says a lot when someone takes
their time to show you how they care.
By Janet Van deWalle“In compassion, when we feel with the other, we dethrone ourselves from the center of our world and we put another person there.”–Karen Armstrong
In the past, I have fallen into the trap of making a donation because…you know, I was sooooo busy. Not anymore. Manny has taught me the magic of giving something from the heart. When he finds out someone is in need, he makes Mexican chicken soup, spaghetti, and all kinds of things! Manny also has made a commitment to make a fabulous lemon ricotta cheesecake that he shares with neighbors when they move in or when they just need a pickme-up. He has taught me what an impact this can have on friends and family that we care about.
Manny and I now do these things as partners, to make our connection stronger and our relationship with friends and family healthier. It feels good. Why don’t you give it a try?
“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make, makes you. Choose wisely.” —Roy
