Let There be Peace on Earth...
Points of Interest
Happy holidays, everyone! My wish is that everyone
is able to celebrate their holiday exactly as they choose. 2020 has been a learning year for me, and I believe that is true for most of us. What I have gained from this time is the realization that it is important to offer true respect to each and every person I come into contact with. So many people have...and are...facing challenges that I am not aware of. What I feel I can do is to respect them, love them, and wish them the best. Putting out positive vibes to others, whether the vibes are spoken or simply felt, will help them and will help us. Manny and I will celebrate our second Christmas together as a married couple. Manny is very much a “Christmas Elf,” and he is quickly converting me! I will never forget last December 17th, when I had to be out of town for the day. Manny had sent me a text message asking me to come through the front door when I got home. My normal entrance is through the garage, so I thought he was in the middle of a “project” that was blocking my entrance. Lo and behold, when I walked through the front door, I heard Christmas music coming over our sound system. I walked into the living room to discover that Manny had decorated the entire living room and family room. Our Christmas tree was glistening and lit, and the dining room table was set with holiday linens and two beautiful holiday centerpieces. The fireplace was on, and scattered throughout the room were lit candles. It was absolutely spectacular. I cried! I think that was when I began to really appreciate this wonderful holiday. I think this year, more than ever, it would help every single one us to make it a point to take some extra time to relish in the peace and joy of this holiday season. Gratitude and appreciation will consistently help raise our spirits, put smiles on our faces, and make us all a lot easier to be around! We may not be able to do much about the challenges that are out there. What we can do is make a decision to seek our own peace and joy. My dear mother used to say, “Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.” This is great advice that I am taking to heart. Here’s my wish for everyone to have a great holiday. Relax, enjoy, appreciate. See you next year!
The holiday season is upon us, and it’s so important this year to do our shopping with our local businesses. Supporting local businesses every day keeps our community strong and growing. Our local businesses have our safety in mind, and many have created new systems to make it easier for us to do business with them. Please shop local! Broccoli Mash Wash and trim 1 or 2 heads of broccoli. Cut into pieces. Place in a large stock pot and add 4–5 cups of water. Add salt and pepper and 1/2 cup of olive oil. Simmer uncovered for 15–25 minutes until soft. Drain the broccoli and coarsely mash it. Add the juice of a lemon, some butter, a bit of sour cream, and salt and pepper as desired. Stir in 1/2 to 1 cup of grated Parmesan cheese. Marinated Olives Rinse 1–2 cups of assorted olives. Place the olives in a large jar. Add several slices of fresh garlic cloves, a pinch or two of red pepper flakes, a small stalk of fresh rosemary, and 1/2 of a lemon, thinly sliced. Pour olive oil over the olives to cover. Shake the jar to mix. Refrigerate for a day or two before serving. Green Beans with Toasted Hazelnuts Trim, wash, and cut 2 pounds of fresh green beans. Cook beans in a pot of boiling salted water for 5–8 minutes. While beans are cooking, toast 1/2 cup of coarsely chopped hazelnuts in 2 Tablespoons of butter for 5 minutes until toasty brown. Drain the beans. Pour the hazelnut mixture over the beans and toss to coat. Add salt and pepper to taste. Old-Fashioned Butter Cookies Cream 1 cup of soft butter with 1 cup of sugar. Add 2 eggs, 2 Tablespoons of milk, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Beat well. Mix together 2 cups of flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 2 teaspoons of baking powder. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet, mixing well. Refrigerate for 1 hour. Roll out the dough. Use a holiday-shaped or round cookie cutter to cut out cookies. Sprinkle sugar or seasonal sprinkles on top or leave plain to frost and decorate later. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 minutes or until edges are brown.
Caramel Crisp Mix Melt 2 cups of butter in a large saucepan. Add 2 cups of brown sugar and bring to a boil. Add 1/2 cup of light Karo syrup, 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla, and 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. Cook for another 2 minutes. Put 2 cups of cereal into a large bowl (along with mixed nuts, if desired). Pour the sugar mixture over the cereal. Toss to coat. Pour out onto wax paper or parchment paper to cool. Buon Natale Cookies Mix together 2 cups of sugar, 2 sticks of soft butter, one 15-ounce container of ricotta cheese, 2 large eggs, 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla, and 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of almond extract. Stir until smooth. Sift 4 cups of flour with 1 teaspoon of salt and 2 teaspoons of baking powder. Gradually stir the flour into the wet ingredients. Spoon onto a parchment-lined cookie sheet. Bake at 325 degrees for 11–13 minutes, until bottoms are golden brown. Frost with plain vanilla buttercream frosting (canned is easy!) and top with seasonal sprinkles. Not Your Grandma’s Fruitcake Whisk or sift together 2 and 1/2 cups of flour and 1 teaspoon of baking soda; set aside. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 eggs with one 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk, one 28-ounce jar of ready-to-use mincemeat, 2 cups of mixed candied fruit (chop, if necessary), and 1 cup of chopped pecans. Generously grease and flour a fluted tube pan or an angel food cake pan. Put the mixture into the pan and bake in a 300-degree oven for 50 minutes. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes and remove from the pan to cool completely. Place in a covered container and store in the refrigerator for 3–4 weeks. Once a week, pour one ounce of bourbon over the top of the cake, then cover and refrigerate until serving time. Drizzle white frosting over the cake, if desired.

Fashion Worthy By Holly Bell
Holiday Style Inspirations Comfy, Casual Looks The holidays are upon us! Though our priorities and routines may be a little different this year, we still want to look special. The fashion landscape has changed during our stay-more-at-home days. Our looks are more casual, even around the holidays, as we probably do not plan to attend many dressy events. We will likely be more comfortable and casual this year, but we can still bring holiday cheer to our outfits. We can make the most basic outfit holiday-ready by just keeping it simple. Bring out those newly purchased high-waisted stretch jeans or pants in fashion’s favorite color—black— and top them off with a festive, sparkly shirt. All-over sequins are quite the rage this year and are sure to put you (and everyone around you) in a party mood. Choosing a neutral color keeps this sparkly look firmly within the realm of good taste. Try silver, white, copper, or beige for a chic look. To accessorize this look, keep the jewelry understated. Add a boot with a small heel if you are going out or ballet flats for a comfy, at-home casual vibe. Another simple, casual way to say “holiday” with black pants is to pair them with a white blouse made of a fabric that has a bit of shine. To this, you can add more glamorous dangly earrings. If your style is normally very tailored, you can wear that smart white blouse you have been wearing to work, just unbutton the first few buttons and add a pretty camisole to peek out. It’s a little sexy and a fun way to bring a party vibe to the simplest of outfits. This time of year, it is also fun to break out some of the statement jewelry we have hidden away. A statement necklace with a simple, solid color shirt looks chic and sophisticated. Another party-ready touch to add during the holidays is red lipstick. It adds a bit of glamour. There is a red for everyone; you just need to find it! One way to look special and be ultra-comfortable is a midi-length sweater dress. Nothing looks more elegant and slimming than a long column of black. Make sure the fit is correct—it should skim over your curves, not cling. Go ahead and size up to create a body-skimming fit. Make sure it is a super soft fabric that stretches, and you’ll feel as comfortable as if you were curling up in your robe. You will want to wear this dress everywhere! Simple to dress up with great jewelry or a big belt, the sweater dress is a good addition to every wardrobe. In the winter, we often want to choose the simple jeansand-sweater outfit. This is the year to invest in a couple of new fashion-forward sweaters. I love the new puffy shoulder; it adds femininity, looks modern, and is flattering. Keep the design simple, with a basic crew or mock turtleneck, letting the puff shoulder be the star. To this simple outfit, add some holiday earrings—how about some dangly stars? Stars are a fun motif for the holidays and are on trend this year. 10
December 2020
www.womensedition.com
I adore the classic neutral fashions this year—nothing looks classier or more elegant. The holidays, however, sometimes just call for color, especially red! If you don’t like wearing red, choose any of the beautiful jewel tones of blue, emerald, or purple. These colors will shout “Happy holidays!” If you are not used to wearing bold color, this is the time to dip your toe in the water. A sweater, blouse, jacket, or dress would be a smashing addition in any of the jewel tones. Remember to keep the rest of the outfit simple so the brilliant color is the focus. One way to stand out at a holiday party is to wear winter white! An elegant, all-white outfit will stand out in a sea of black. You can make it casual with jeans and a sweater or dress it up a bit with a white wool blazer. Even when dressing casually, winter white looks chic and elegant. Let’s enjoy the wonderful world around us as we welcome the holiday season. Don’t forget to relax and enjoy those special moments rather than rushing about until you’re exhausted. Take some time to make yourself feel special! We can still enjoy each other even if the situation this year is not ideal. Let’s take this opportunity to have a more relaxed, less formal holiday season than usual. Though there are many things we can’t control, we know we are happiest when we look good and feel confident. Happy holidays!

Debra Joy Groesser Fine Art Gallery Find Your Inner Artist!
by Janette Calabro
The beauty of visual art can transform us, appealing both to our
creativity and our personal human experience. While art of any kind can be a source of joy and comfort, original works of art have a special place in the heart of local artist Debra Joy Groesser. She finds art to be a deeply spiritual experience, and she wants to share this experience with the public. To that end, she opened Debra Joy Groesser Fine Art Gallery in downtown Ralston. Debra Joy Groesser, Owner
“Art is not about money; it’s about inspiring people. Do that and the money will follow,” Debra shares. “I think many of my artist friends would agree. During times such as we’ve been going through this year, art can be a healing force, which I am happy to be able to share.” The gallery is also the perfect place to find unique, meaningful gifts for the holidays, no matter what your budget is. This includes original paintings, “artful gifts” such as wine glasses and coffee mugs, limited edition prints, note cards, as well as beautiful functional and decorative wood pieces created by Debra’s husband, Don. Not only is Don a talented woodworker, he is also the Mayor of Ralston. Teaching is an important part of Debra’s life as an artist. Her goal is to educate the public on all aspects of art and help them see it from the artist’s point of view. Debra teaches workshops and classes, and her first instructional painting video was just released through Liliedahl Videos. “Original art is one of a kind,” she says. “It’s what the artist has actually touched and poured their heart and soul into. Some paintings become a metaphor. When people relate to a piece, it’s really special. They feel the emotion in it. I’ve seen people brought to tears.” Debra cites a painting of hers called “Faith, Strength, and Perseverance.” She painted the piece while her dad was fighting cancer, and it holds a forever place in her heart and her personal collection. Her point? Works of art can hold something special and significant to anyone and everyone. After graduating with an art degree from Bellevue College, Debra worked as a commercial artist for a local bank. Following that, during a stint as a realtor, colleagues started requesting portraits of houses. That eventually led her back to her art career. Now, she’s made her name on a national level as a full-time artist. Among other accomplishments, Debra is President and CEO of the American Impressionist Society (AIS), a Master Signature Member of Plein Air Artists
Colorado and a Signature Member of AIS, Laguna Plein Air Painters and American Plain Artists. Many of Debra’s paintings are created “en plein air” (French for “open air” or “full air”), outdoors on location. This way of painting became popular in the 19th century with the French Impressionists, capturing the effects of light on their subjects, including subtle nuances of color, light, and atmosphere. Plein air painting has become very popular with artists today. “There is a freshness and immediacy achieved in plein air paintings,” says Debra. “You’re racing against the changing light, so you have to work quickly to capture the feeling of the time of day and the spirit of the place.” Debra is best known for impressionist landscapes, but she is also known for portraiture. In 2011, Omaha Performing Arts asked her to paint a portrait of Richard and Mary Holland. The portrait beautifully captures the close connection between the two of them, and it hangs in a place of honor at the Holland Performing Arts Center. Debra loves to create portraits for her clients and would love to create one for you! Debra’s next project is called “Yes, This is Nebraska,” showcasing the unique beauty of the Nebraska landscape. Her goal is to quash presumptions from those around the nation who may think of Nebraska as flyover country or a boring drive. If you’re looking for unique gifts for your holiday giving this year, be sure to stop by the gallery. All the artwork and gifts can also be viewed and purchased online at debrajoygroesser.com (Debra’s website) and debrajoygroesserfineart. com (gallery website). Gift certificates are also available. Holiday hours are Thursday—Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. (November 5th through December 23rd) or by appointment by calling 402-592-6552.
Teaching is an important part of Debra’s life as an artist. Her goal is to educate the public on all aspects of art and help them see it from the artist’s point of view.

A Few Words From One of Our Advertisers: “I began advertising with Women’s Edition starting with the November 2019 issue, and I have been thrilled with the results! I’ve had numerous new clients come to the gallery because they saw my ads in Women’s Edition, even as I’ve been working by appointment in recent months due to the pandemic. Most had never been to downtown Ralston, where I’m located, so introducing them to our town and what we have to offer has been another benefit! A Woman’s Work
Let Your Hearts Be Light!
Enjoying the Symbols of Christmas
By Sharon Knierim
Each holiday throughout the year has symbols by which that special day or time is recognized. Birthdays, for example, are symbolized by candles, cake, ubiquitous balloons, and—of course—the traditional singing of“Happy Birthday to You!”(By the way, this is now believed to be the most-sung song around the world.) But for symbolism, no holiday can beat the ever-present symbols of Christmas. What is the first symbol that comes to your mind when you think of Christmas? For so many of us, it is the Christmas tree, probably because that is our earliest memory of the holiday. The Christmas tree itself represents mystery, excitement, and intrigue for children. Every day in December, many youngsters take a quick inventory of what is under the tree. Returning from a day at school, they just might find a package that was not under the tree in the morning! Oh, the excitement that tree and its trimmings bring to us over the years. Even though many of us display artificial trees and greenery, there is still joy in that important centerpiece of the holiday. Many of us decorate our homes in the “Santa Claus and his elves” theme, but many homes also have a Nativity scene on display. That is, after all, where Christmas began. One of the beautiful things about this holiday is that it is so full

of love and so broad in its scope that there is also room for snowmen, jingling bells, angels, and, of course, good old Santa Claus. Even in today’s technological world, there is nothing so wonderful as receiving a holiday card with a letter (or even just a few lines) from someone who was thoughtful enough to purchase a card and stamp, to spend a few minutes addressing it and offering greetings, and to mail the card. With all the rushing around and electronic greetings, it is delightful to reach into the mailbox and pull out something tangible, to hold in our hands, and know that somebody wishes us well. Christmas is, after all, a personal kind of holiday that reaches into our hearts. Those of us who love to sing (whether we sing well or not) will always value Christmas carols. There are so many variations today! Even preschoolers have worked out the words and rhythm of “Jingle Bells.” Whether you favor Bing

Crosby’s “White Christmas,” or “Frosty the Snowman,” or “Away in a Manger,” there is something for every musical taste. Nobody can forget the holiday extravaganzas in grade school, as we lined up in the auditorium, dressed in our finest, and thrilled our parents with all kinds of songs and antics. Sunday school gave us another opportunity to display our prowess in voice as we spread our own kind of holiday cheer. Bell ringers abound in the build-up to the big day. Charitable giving is part of the season. Many organizations draw our attention to the need in our communities, and our pockets and purses spring open to share our own blessings and good will. Each year, without exception, some Good Samaritan donates an extremely valuable coin or coins in the holiday spirit. Habits like these are not typically found at other times of the year. Christmas brings out our spirit of giving like no other holiday. What is it that prompts us to share good will and hope during this time of the year? Some people believe that the world we live in today is so complicated that the thoughts of sharing and peaceful coexistence naturally appeal to us. When we take part in giving gifts, offering donations, and sharing our time with others, we feel good about what we’re doing. While we bask in the memories of holidays of yesteryear, we can make new memories to cherish. If our memories of “Christmas Past” are all sweet, it is probably because we have made them so. Have we sanitized our memories? No, probably not, but as the years pass, we have a tendency to store in our hearts and minds those things which have made us happy. That’s a little bit of unconscious effort. Why not match it with a conscious effort to make “Christmas Present” and “Christmas Future” full of fond remembrances, too? During this holiday season, let your heart be bright. Join in the joy. Don’t forget the universal Christmas symbol for all children around the world—the gifts! Sometimes they are brought by Santa Claus, and sometimes they are placed there by people who truly love children. Wherever they come from, the excitement around the tree on Christmas morning is palpable and memorable. Have a holly, jolly holiday, everyone!

Vantage Point
Camelot Cleaners
From Their Family to Yours
By Angella A. Arndt
Clothing trends have shifted over the years, especially with workplaces moving from suits, ties, and dresses to more casual dress codes. What does this mean for you? If your job’s dress code has gone in a business casual direction, you may find yourself wearing fewer items marked“dry clean only”and spending more time laundering, folding, and ironing at home. Wouldn’t it be fabulous to drop off all those dirty clothes and then pick up a wardrobe that is cleaned and ready to wear? If your schedule is too busy for laundry, Camelot Cleaners can lighten the load. Craig Courtney, President
Vincent Courtney founded Camelot Cleaners in 1984. After managing a large, local dry cleaning business for about 20 years, he wanted to venture out on his own. He began with a single store that has since expanded to include five Omaha locations. Though Vincent has retired, Camelot Cleaners remains a family-run operation. His sons Craig and Chris jointly own and run the business. Craig remembers going to work with his father as a small child. When Craig was 15, he started working at Camelot Cleaners himself. After high school, he attended Marquette University in Milwaukee. When he came back to Omaha after college, he decided to join the business. “We’re still a family-owned small business,” Craig notes, “carrying on my dad’s vision to be a great dry cleaner and offer excellent customer service.” Camelot is a full-service cleaner. “If you can wear it, we can clean it,” Craig says. Besides all traditional clothing items, they clean special items like wedding dresses, formal dresses, and outerwear, as well as leather and suede. A seamstress is available for alterations and repairs. They also clean household textiles like drapes, bedding, tablecloths, blankets, quilts, and small area rugs. How does dry cleaning differ from the laundering you do at home? With dry cleaning, clothes are cleaned with a liquid solvent that contains little or no water. While clothes do get wet, the solvent evaporates faster than water. The solvent is also filtered during the cleaning cycle and then distilled for purification to be used again. Dry cleaning is more effective than washing when removing oily or greasy stains, and clothes are less likely to shrink or fade when they aren’t exposed to so much water. For items that are better washed with soap and water, Camelot offers traditional laundry services. Customer service, experience, and high quality are critically important to the success of Camelot, Craig shares. The industry is prone to high turnover, but Camelot’s long-term employees are like family. “We’re good at what we do,” Craig says. “Stain removal and making sure clothes look right requires care and experience. The quality of garment textile care shows in the finished product.” 18
December 2020
For their customers’ convenience, Camelot offers same-day service. If customers drop off their clothes by 9:00 in the morning, they can pick them up after 3:00 that same day. Two locations (132nd and Dodge and 85th and Frederick) have drive-through service, where items are brought to your car. Regular customers receive laundry service bags that they can drop off, and their instructions and preferences, such as light or heavy starch, are stored in Camelot’s system. Camelot also provides delivery in limited areas. As with any product or service, cheaper doesn’t mean better, Craig notes. He advises careful consideration of a few factors before choosing a dry cleaner. Is the cleaner experienced? What kind of cleaning products does the cleaner use? “We use a high quality, environmentally friendly solvent,” Craig asserts. What are their hours? What’s the turnaround time for items? What additional services do they offer? Can they handle customer preferences? You’ll want to choose a dry cleaner who listens, understands your preferences, and has the services and hours you need. Communicating with your dry cleaner at the time of drop-off will ensure a better outcome for items that need special attention. Although a dry cleaner will review labels before cleaning, it helps to share special care instructions. Point out embellishments, unique fabrics, and delicate features, and ask how they will be handled. You should always draw your cleaner’s attention to stains, and—whatever you do—don’t try to remove stains yourself! It’s easy to make the problem worse. Leave it to the pros! “Camelot Cleaners doesn’t want to be the biggest dry cleaner, just the best,” Craig concludes. “We want to be able to keep a close eye on things, maintain high-quality standards, and keep a personal connection with our customers.” Camelot Cleaners is located at 8950 Frederick Street in Omaha, with four other west Omaha locations. Stress Less During the Holidays! Relax, Shop, Entertain
By Janette Calabro
Christmas is coming! The holidays can be fun and relaxing, but often times stressful. This year, fight the urge to do everything, and hold onto the vision of a perfect holiday. Dreams can come true, especially with a little help. Let’s look at some ways to enjoy a stress-free holiday with some ideas on how to organize your time, enjoy family and friends, avoid conflicts, shop, entertain, and take a little time just for you.
Start your stress-less journey by creating intentions for the outcome you desire. A little balance during the holidays begins with clear intentions, and organized time. Intention isn’t really a resolution, it’s more like a goal. Visualize what you want, and let the magic unfold. For example, if you want less stress, set that goal, but don’t leave it there. Get specific in the different ways you can achieve it. Brainstorm on what your version of less stress looks like. If your focus is on family harmony, one of your goals might be better communication. Effective communication can make or break a holiday gathering. One good rule is avoiding criticism by staying positive and avoiding blame. Another good rule is to listen before sharing your own feelings. Though this is difficult, it is usually worth it. Listen to understand, not to judge. When conversation gets too heated, cortisol levels increase, and reactions are emotionally charged. When that happens, it might be time to politely explain that you appreciate sharing opinions, but you’d like to change the subject. Get your family on board with the idea by emphasizing the advantages of good communication. The effort to understand each other and be respectful can help develop everyone’s social skills—not to mention the great example you’re setting for the kids. If one of your intentions is to balance work with the non-stop demands of the holiday bustle, consider hiring some help. We all endure less stress when we live in a clean, organized home. Create a list of what you’d like to get done before the celebrations start, and then get busy. Everyone’s time is valuable! Use yours wisely by hiring the right professionals to move you toward a happy, low-stress holiday. If cooking the holiday feast is what ties you up in knots, hire a caterer. Lots of people have adjusted their dining habits during the pandemic, and caterers are really the experts in take-out food! Many people love a traditional holiday dinner, but if you’ve been looking for an excuse to shake it up a little, this might be the year to try something new. Either way, you can work out the menu in advance and leave the cooking, serving, and cleanup to the pros. For all gatherings, and especially if you’re hosting one, you can also rent all the items you need for that grand holiday party. Make sure your guests are comfortable with 20
December 2020
proper tables. After all, tables are the focal point of Christmas dinner. Rent several round tables so everyone can interact and make room for a kid’s table and chairs. Comfortable chairs are pivotal for a successful dinner. Your guests will be sitting for several hours, so consider cushioned chairs. Add cloth napkins and tablecloths that fits your theme, and don’t worry about enough matching china. Rent the china, wash them when dinner is over, and stack them back up for the rental company to take away. Same with the flatware and serve ware—just be sure you know what’s on the menu, and plan accordingly. There’s a glass for every drink you can think of—you’re covered if you communicate the menu with the rental company. If your guest list is simply too long, consider renting a space so that everyone will have plenty of room to spread out. Some venues provide their own catering and bartending services. They might even provide the decorations! Another option is an open house-style party, so you don’t have too many people there at the same time. A friend has done her holiday entertaining this way for years—she hosts all day, and we get a beautifully printed invitation that tells us what time to come. If you’re planning a staggered party and need the table linens and dishes changed in between guests, ask your caterer if they provide wait staff to clean in between. Speaking of decorations, there’s still time to book a professional holiday decorator. You can read about them in more detail in our Interiors by Design article on page 30, but the basic idea is that they can do it all, inside and out—and they’ll take it all down after the holidays, so you don’t have to store a thing! Now, let’s get to the gifts. During times of isolation this year, many of us have relied on large online retailers to get the things we needed without having to leave our homes. Now is the time to support our small businesses! Local shop owners are our friends and neighbors, and their businesses give our communities their unique charm as well as keep our tax revenues local. Most stores are open, reconfigured for a safer in-store shopping experience. If you have any questions, just call ahead. They are ready to greet you! If you’re not able to browse in person, the relationships you may have built with the owners of small boutiques are about to pay off in a major way. With some information from you about the people on your list, they may be able to help
www.womensedition.com
you find unique gifts over the phone. (Be sure that the loved ones who are shopping for you have the boutique’s contact information, too—with one quick call from them, you may end up with a gift recommended just for you by a pro who knows your style!) Staff recommendations are also great for gifts like toys, books, or games. Just give them the name of a book or game your loved one enjoys, and they’ll be happy to recommend a gift! Many local stores also have online shopping and curbside pickup available, as well as free delivery in the local area. When you’re done shopping, treat yourself to something just for you. A massage will relax those tired, knotted muscles. Schedule time at a day spa for those things that pamper and destress you. When you feel good, everyone around you feels good. Schedule a manicure, a pedicure, or a body treatment to exfoliate for smooth bare skin—a must for when you slip on that little black dress. Don’t forget to add aromatherapy at the spa (and at home) for a grounding, back-to-yourself balance that everyone needs during the holidays. Use Jasmine or peppermint to boost your mood, lavender to take the edge off, and chamomile to sleep better, just to name a few. Meditation isn’t just for the wise man at the top of the mountain, and it doesn’t have to be “airy-fairy.” Find a comfortable place to sit and breathe. Even beginners can benefit from this quiet time to overcome difficulties, and balance emotions. Sometimes our minds are hard to
Pelvic Health Physical Therapists A few of our specialities:
quiet, and that’s okay. We’re all human. Some meditate better while moving, or walking. You can boost blood flow, improve digestion, reduce anxiety and depression, and improve sleep quality after a walking meditation. This could be a slow walk around the block (bundle up if it’s cold), a yoga meditation class from home, or any mindful movement that helps you feel more grounded, serene, and aids toward developing awareness of your mind, body, and breath. While you’re re-calibrating during your mindful meditation, recognize any shortcomings you think you may have. Shortcomings can be defined as a “weakness” or inability. Of course, all of us have some personal weaknesses, but during the holidays, we seem to stress over them more. Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses, and then list out ways to improve them. Acceptance without fear is key, and talking with a trusted friend or counselor is healthy. Expressing your feelings on paper builds confidence too. Once you address your shortcomings, set a goal to make improvements—the path to improvement is different for each of us. Don’t worry about what others think, and don’t shrink away from something you may think is wrong. This alone will help you through the holidays, and beyond. Now, time to sit back in your clean, well-organized house, take a sip of hot chocolate, and dream of dancing sugar plum fairies, with the clear intentions of a perfect holiday. The ballroom, lounge, and overflow room, along with a serving kitchen, cover almost 10,000 square feet, offering 300+ guests an enjoyable reception, dinner, and a little dancing. Goldsmith Silversmith
Custom Jewelry in the Old Market By Marge Shoemaker
The holidays are nearly here. If you’re still on the hunt for a truly special gift, go to Goldsmith Silversmith in Omaha’s Old Market. Owner Dwaine Ferguson says with a smile,“When a customer comes in to shop for something special, whether it’s a piece made by one of our artists or a custom design, we want them to leave happy.”His slogan? Dare to be different! His attitude? If you can dream it, we can make it! Goldsmith Silversmith is known for custom jewelry, and Dwaine loves talking to his customers.“That’s how I get to know them,”he says.“I can’t design something special if I don’t know the person.” Dwaine Ferguson, Owner

Reduce Holiday Stress Give the Gift of Massage
By Loretta McCollum
December is definitely the most joyful time of the year, but it can also be the most fatiguing time... especially this year. Many of us run ourselves ragged in our quest to provide the perfect holiday for our family and friends. We need to take time out from all of the festivities, food, and frolic to relax and rejuvenate! Getting a massage is a great way to ease the stress and strain of this busy season. This is an ideal time to treat yourself as a reward for all that you do for others. It can also be the perfect gift for the person on your list who seems to have everything. A massage has many benefits, including muscle relaxation, stress relief, improving sleep quality, and easing chronic pain. There are multiple types of massage, each producing different results. Swedish massage utilizes soft, broad strokes up and down the entire body, focusing on specific regions. The muscles are rubbed in the same direction that blood returns to the heart. Tapping motions on the top layer of muscles, combined with manipulated joint movement, is both relaxing and energizing. A Swedish massage also increases oxygen levels in the blood, improving circulation and relieving tension. Hot stone massages help relax tight muscles by placing warm stones that have been heated in water on specific areas of the body, such as the back, stomach, and face. The stones warm and relax the
muscles. The massage therapist is then able to utilize deeper pressure on those areas without discomfort for the client. A hot stone massage can decrease stress, increase flexibility, and decrease muscle spasms. A deep tissue massage is an intense massage that targets muscle knots. The massage therapist applies warm oils and direct pressure to relax the top muscle layers, allowing for penetration to the deeper muscle tissues. This type of massage helps relieve chronic aches and pains. It’s also beneficial for pain caused by sciatica and fibromyalgia. Deep tissue massage is used in combination with stretching for sports massages. A pre-sport massage includes techniques to increase range of motion, while a post-sport massage focuses more on reducing inflammation. Thai massage combines acupressure and yoga poses to relax the body. The therapist guides the client through various stretches, manipulating the body into different positions. Benefits may include boosting energy, reducing stress, and stimulating circulation. ›››

By Robyn V. Powell
With all the challenges we’ve faced in 2020, everyone is looking to the holidays to lift our spirits. While nothing quite welcomes the holiday season like decking the halls, the work and worry of getting all the decorations and lights up safely can seriously dampen the mood. If you’re dreaming of holiday magic in your home this season, why not leave it to a pro? Imagine the joy of having an interior design team skillfully design a beautiful concept that flows cohesively throughout your home and is all within your budget! Hiring a professional so you can enjoy a low-stress holiday might just be the best gift you can give your family...and yourself. Professional holiday decorating companies generally offer a free in-home consultation to discuss holiday concepts that will work with your space and your style. Most companies will incorporate your personal decorations with theirs to create a stunning display that will give you the effect you’re looking for. Services typically include fully decorating indoor and outdoor trees and hanging wreaths, garlands, and swags on doors, stairways, and windows. a story to tell. Rustic notes of plaid and wood add warmth to this holiday season while color trends include dreamy layers of winter white, gray, and beige, adorned with silver metallic accents for a subtle hint of glam. In the spirit of Hanukkah, add a little sparkle to the traditional white, blue, and silver theme and light up the nights with a modern shiny gold or brass menorah. Take advantage of 2020’s navy blue trend and celebrate Hanukkah with an array of beautiful blue accents in hues from sapphire to indigo. Decorating outdoors completes your winter wonderland. The joy of returning to a beautifully lit home will add to your holiday spirit. What’s more, a professional installation is easy, safe, and stress-free. No more spending hours on the roof attaching light after light or wasting time detangling wires. Working with a professional installer allows you to try new design trends and the latest technologies for energy savings and convenience. Professional designers use LED lights as the basis of their holiday displays. For seamless operation, the whole show can be designed to run on a tablet or cell phone. If you think the stress you saved yourself before the holidays was worth the cost of hiring professionals, just wait until the holidays are over! When it’s time for the lights and decorations to come down, you just sit back and watch while the pros take everything down and pack it all up. As you let the professionals store all those lights and bulky decorations for you in optimal conditions, you’ll appreciate all the space it frees up in your garage or basement. Because hiring professionals has become so popular over the last few years, it’s a good idea to book early. Check your local listings for holiday decorating companies as well as landscapers or outdoor lighting specialists. Get several bids and vet each one carefully; ask what type of lighting will be used, what happens if equipment is damaged or doesn’t work, if they are properly insured, and if they can put you in touch with satisfied homeowners who have used their services. If you truly want to relax and enjoy your holiday, hiring a professional decorating crew is an investment you should consider. It’s a great way to keep the ho-ho-ho in your holidays! To Your Good Health
Let’s Talk About Sex A Sexual Health Update
By Leslie Byrne
When Helen Gurley Brown’s book “Sex and the Single Girl” came out in 1964, it kicked off a sexual revolution. Her book asserted that women had as much right to non-marital sexual pleasure as men, and that was revolutionary thinking. Fifty-six years later, sexual health is discussed much more openly. Sexual health is important for all women! Whether a woman has been in a monogamous relationship for years or is a single adult, she needs to know the latest in sexual health and what options are available. The term “sexual health” covers a pretty broad range of topics, including choices that help prevent sexuality transmitted diseases (STDs) and preventative measures regarding disease, cancer, and pregnancy. When it comes to sexuality, there is something that applies to every stage of an adult’s life. When people consider what it takes to stay healthy sexually, many of them cite the prevention of STDs. Although the age group with the highest infection rates continues to be ages 15 to 24, would you be surprised to learn that the STD infection rate in adults older than age 45 has increased every year since 2012? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2016, more than 80,000 of the recorded cases of STDs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and HIV were in adults older than 45. Many STDs can be cured with antibiotics. Left untreated, these diseases can lead to serious health problems.
You have a
choice
In recent years, researchers have identified a link between a human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and cancer of the cervix, vagina, anus, throat, or penis. An HPV vaccine for young adults has been developed. Vaccination is recommended starting at age 11, before children have been exposed to HPV. It can prevent cancers caused by HPV later in life. Talk to your child’s pediatrician. Choosing the right contraception is another way that adults can be sexually healthy. The type of contraception you started using decades ago may no longer be the best option for you. Talk to your healthcare provider about the choices available now. These include hormonal methods such as an implant, an injection, oral contraception (the pill), the patch, or a vaginal ring. Barrier methods include diaphragms, sponges, and condoms. For women (and men) who are certain they don’t want any more children, surgical procedures like tubal ligation (or vasectomy for men) can end the chance of pregnancy permanently.

When considering contraceptive methods, it’s important to recall that condoms are the only method of birth control that also protects users against STDs. Vaginal rejuvenation is a general term covering several different procedures that can help resolve genital problems caused by childbirth, age, or menopause. These problems can include urinary incontinence, vaginal laxity, and excessive vaginal dryness. Surgical procedures can include things like labiaplasty (to reduce the size of the uncomfortable labia) and vaginoplasty (to improve vaginal laxity). Non-surgical procedures include laser therapy or radiofrequency therapy, both of which heat the tissues in the genital area to jump-start collagen production. This can help with age-related and childbirth-related vaginal symptoms. Don’t forget that sexual health applies to men as much as it does to women. The most common sex problem men report to the doctor is erectile dysfunction (ED)—it affects approximately 30 million men (and their partners). You may be surprised to learn that treatment can often start with heart and vascular health, since ED is often linked to problems with blood flow throughout the body. The doctor may uncover some risks that, once addressed, can decrease problems with ED. These may include changes in diet, increasing exercise, or giving up smoking, some drugs, or alcohol. Sometimes, treatment can include therapy for emotional problems caused by relationship conflicts, stress, depression, or anxiety. Treatment can include oral medication, testosterone therapy, injections, a penile implant, or surgery. Some couples want to enjoy a healthier sex life together but find it extremely difficult to talk openly and honestly with each other about sex. In that case, it may be time to see a sex therapist. These trained professionals help couples talk openly about sex. A therapist can identify the root of a couple’s difficulty and give them tools to resolve those problems. They can also address the psychological side of problems like erectile dysfunction or low sexual desire. Therapists focus on the future instead of what has not worked for a couple in the past. Whatever stage of life you’re in, give your sexual health the priority it deserves! Talk to your doctor or therapist about any struggles you’re facing or symptoms you’re experiencing. If you feel hesitant about starting the conversation—don’t! These professionals have heard it all, and they’re here to help. Blanket the World With Kindness Make Someone Smile Today!
Tell me about the last time that you met a
complete stranger who was kind to you. You know the feeling. You meet someone at the store, the restaurant, on the job, or on the phone. When you finish the interaction, you have a smile on your face and your step is a little lighter. The memory feels good, right? “Unexpected kindness is the most powerful, least costly, and most underrated agent of human change.” —Bob Kerry
It is amazing to me to realize that one person can change another person’s day in just a few minutes. My husband, Manny, taught me how it’s done. Years ago, we went to a restaurant for breakfast. Our server was, shall we say, not going to win any smiling contests. I began to grumble about how rude she was. I found myself going down the path of negativity. “Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.” —Dalai Lama XIV
Manny stopped me and asked me to watch what he was going to do. When the server returned to our table, Manny engaged with her, asked her questions about her and her life, smiled, and—before I knew what had happened—she seemed a whole lot happier than when we walked in. Guess what? So was I!
By Janet Van deWalle
“Spread the love wherever you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.” —Mother Teresa
That was a terrific lesson for me. It really didn’t take much effort. It didn’t cost us anything extra. What it did do was make our breakfast a whole lot more enjoyable. I know that it touched our server, as well, and helped her have a better day. “Kindness is like snow—it beautifies everything it covers.” —Kahil Gibran
I have an idea. Let’s all begin a campaign to put a smile on a complete stranger’s face…every day, at least once. The great thing about this campaign is that it is contagious to the giver. When we make a decision to be kind to others, the great feeling very quickly envelops us, as well. If we practice this for 21 days in a row, it will become a habit. A great habit! It will make us have more fun and be happy. Now, I don’t know about you, but I’m all for that. I’m all for smiling, spreading some joy, and making a positive impact on the people we meet. I think we could all use more of that! “It’s time to just be happy. Being angry, sad, and overthinking isn’t worth it anymore. Just let things flow. Be positive.”—Anonymous

Building Blocks for Life What a Gift!
By Marge Shoemaker
I’m writing this in October, just a few days prior to the election, and my thinking is bouncing around a number of topics: the campaigns, the continuing pandemic and accompanying restrictions, and holiday plans. I’ve already voted, so that’s not a problem. There are still those annoying, uncivil campaign ads. I recently read an essay regarding the preponderance of incivility and the model it provides our children. A light bulb turned on—what a great topic for this column! My mind quickly bounced to holiday gift ideas. What better gift to give the kids than building blocks to help them succeed? I came up with BLOCKS: Bravery, Learning, Optimism, Courtesy, Kindness, and Sociability. (If I haven’t mentioned it before, I love word play and linguistic games! One of my favorite pastimes when traveling is figuring out the messages on vanity license plates, such as an expensive auto with the plate CYISEL—see why I sell.) BRAVERY is important for kids. They shouldn’t be afraid to take chances. As parents, it’s our responsibility to give the kids every chance to spread their wings and try new things…to expand their interests. They don’t know if they like it if they don’t try it. LEARNING includes indulging curiosity and investigating the unknown. There’s more to learning than school work! On road trips, my kids always directed my attention to something in the
distance, hoping I wouldn’t see a historical marker and want to stop. (It didn’t always work.) Listening to the opinions of others and discussing issues is also a way to expand knowledge. Think how boring it would be if we all thought alike. OPTIMISM and hope aren’t always easy to maintain—it takes practice to see the bright side. My mother-in-law looked for the silver lining. When storms came, she would comment,“Well, the farmers need the rain.”Teach kids to think “I can” or “I’ll try” rather than “I can’t.” If we’re positive, they will be, too. COURTESY should be taught while the kids are young. We’re never too old (and rarely too young) to say please and thank you. One time, a young man (he was about six) held a door for me. I thanked him for being a gentleman…and told his dad he was doing a good job. Praise and courtesy go a long way with people. KINDNESS means being helpful, not hurtful. There are lots of ways to hurt others...most can be avoided. It’s the “do unto others” mindset. SOCIABILITY is important with everyone…not just with friends, but with everybody, young and old, singles or groups. The arts of conversation and communication are learned. There are times we all need to put down our phones. As adults, it’s important that we give the kids a favorable model to follow, but I think these BLOCKS are good for all of us. What are your thoughts?

Healthy Living
Healthy, Independent Living! The Way To Stay Homecare
By Janette Calabro
Katie Block believes firmly in “dignity, independence, and quality of life”for seniors as they age. In fact, she believes so strongly in helping seniors stay healthy and independent that she started her own business to reach more people. It’s called Way To Stay Homecare, and that’s just what she helps seniors find. Katie began her career in senior health care by obtaining a license to sell Medicare and long-term insurance. Working in the industry helped her recognize the need for truly personalized senior health care. “I knew that I could customize care for seniors,” she says. “That was really the goal. I knew it could be done better.” Three years ago, she started her own senior home health care business from the ground up after her friend, Kenneth Snyder, asked her to write a business plan and then invested 50 percent in it. Today, she and her 80 employees serve 100 clients. Way To Stay Homecare does exactly what it says— helps people find a way to live more independently
at home, with the assistance of caregivers who help with everyday tasks that most of us take for granted. Such services include companion care and assistance with activities of daily living like eating, bathing, dressing, and toileting. They also offer meal preparation, light housekeeping, and transportation to errands and appointments. Though Way To Stay Homecare is a non-medical service, medication reminders and range of motion exercises can be provided.

Way To Stay Homecare is certainly not the only area provider of senior home services, but a few things set this business apart from its competitors. One of those things is the lack of required minimums for booking. Most of her competitors have a four-hour minimum per day for caregivers, and services have to be used for a certain number of days per week. “We don’t have a minimum,” Katie says. “You can use us from one hour at a time all the way up to 24-hour care—use as much or as little as you need.” Although licensure is not required by the state of Nebraska, Way To Stay Homecare is indeed licensed, and caregivers are insured and bonded for their clients’ protection. “Our goal is to keep clients as safe and as independent as they can be at home,” Katie points out. “We decided that we wanted to be licensed so that we are held to a higher degree of accountability.” Another important aspect of care at Way To Stay Homecare is the client/caregiver matching process. Caregivers are selected with care and with the client’s approval. “I always tell clients that if a caregiver isn’t a good fit, let me know, and we’ll try somebody else,” Katie shares. A newer offering at Way To Stay Homecare is a digital monitoring service that is available 24/7. Unique to each client, a touch screen caters to the senior’s safety, health, and even social needs. The system can keep track of blood pressure, blood sugar levels, medication reminders, temperature, door monitoring, and so much more. Family and friends can check in through the synced (and HIPAA-compliant) portal
Aislinn .indd 1
through Facebook or video calling, as well as through their own linked portal. Katie’s clients often reach into her heart, and she knows them all. One evening, she drove from her home in Springfield to midtown Omaha to personally deliver a request to one of her very first clients. “He was a 24-hour client who called me at 8:00 one night to say he was really hungry for a Runza sandwich, and his caregiver wasn’t there,” Katie recalls. “After calling the caregiver, I ran to Runza, got the sandwich, and took it to his house. The caregiver had been there the whole time, doing laundry in the back. My client laughed and said, ‘I just wanted a Runza really bad, and I knew you would bring it to me.’” That cherished client passed away a few months ago, and Katie adopted his Maltese puppy. “That little dog is my business mascot now,” says Katie. Katie knows that cost is always a concern when considering senior home care. “Reach out and find out what your options are,” she advises. “It doesn’t cost anything to get an opinion. The more information you have, the more informed a decision you can make.” Katie and her staff are very experienced in navigating the maze of long-term care insurance. They help their clients explore all insurance options to pay for their personalized services. No matter how much life we have left, everyone wants to spend it with dignity and independence. Focus on Finance
Stockbrokers, RIP
The New One-Stop Financial Services Stores
By George Morgan
When I became a member of the financial services industry in the late 1970s, my colleagues and I were called stockbrokers, and all we did was buy and sell individual stocks. I worked for a small regional firm. We didn’t have a big, expensive research department like the major Wall Street firms, so we built our own buy and sell lists using information we gleaned from the financial media and from each other. At home, my family had a sacred Friday night ritual: Dinner had to be completed by 7:00 so that I could watch the weekly edition of Wall Street Week with Louis Rukeyser. The show began with a pun-filled monologue by the host. The second half of the show was devoted to a panel discussion featuring randomly chosen Wall Street stock gurus. The panel patter revolved around where the market was headed and which stocks were the best buy du jour. That ship sailed decades ago. As a matter of fact, the demise of the stockbroker had already begun in the 1970s, when Jack Bogle developed the index fund and Joe Ricketts started a company that would allow ordinary investors to buy stocks on their home computers. Over the course of nearly 50 years, those two concepts have transformed the industry and now dominate how Americans, both individuals and institutions, handle their investments. About 10 or 20 years ago, the financial services industry began to divide itself into distinct camps. The first group consisted of the remaining Wall Street firms and a hodgepodge of large regional firms. They are usually referred to as “full service brokers.”The second group fell under the descriptor of “discount brokers.” In today’s terminology, they are moving toward the title of “online brokers.” A third group, which is now the fastest growing segment of the industry, operates under the title of Independent Registered Investment Advisors. Many of the Wall Street names that dominated the industry in the last decade of the 20th century have either merged into other firms or disappeared entirely. The job description of their sales force has also undergone an evolution. Even in large Wall Street firms or one of the major regional firms, salespeople are rarely allowed to recommend individual stocks. Most of their clients’ assets are pooled together and are directed to portfolios that consist of actively managed mutual funds. The sales force that previously invested each client’s assets now spends the majority of their client contact hours preparing individualized financial plans. The discount/online brokerage firms follow a distinctly different business model. They operate without the organized, incentivized sales force that you would find at a full service
42

broker. The majority of clients, unless they specifically ask for one, do not have a designated advisor. The focus of the firm is to allow their clients to direct and execute their own investment strategies. Most firms provide internet research platforms that allow their clients to buy and sell individual stocks and index-oriented products without professional supervision. Over the past decade, the biggest of the discount/online firms have altered their business model to motivate financial planners and wealth managers to use their account platforms to hold their clients’ investment assets. The discount firms finance their operations by lending out the cash held in the clients’ accounts. The financial planners earn their keep through fees they charge for writing financial plans. Some planners also charge a fee for directing the investments of their planning clients. We are at the beginning of a time when extremely sophisticated and low-cost online technology tools will make it much easier for investors to do much of what their planners and managers are currently doing for them…at a dramatically lower cost. So, what’s the right investment approach for you? Do you feel comfortable making your own investment decisions, with the occasional help of either a randomly chosen financial professional or even a boiler-plate plan spit out by a computer? Do you want to pay to have a dedicated financial pro who keeps track of your finances and is immediately available by phone? We now live in a world we there are few one-size-fitsall products and services. You need to decide how much of the investment process you want to do yourself and how much you want to have professionally done for you. Technology and competition will continue to drive the already incredibly low fees even lower. Decide which investment model makes you feel most comfortable. Whatever you decide, there is a financial professional out there waiting for you.

Honeyman Rent-All
Putting the “Special” in Special Events By Angella A. Arndt
Are you planning a party, wedding, or special event? Are you wondering how you’re going to seat everyone? Serve everyone? Entertain everyone? Stop wondering and call Honeyman Rent-All, your partner in creating memorable events. There’s no need to scramble, asking friends and neighbors for extra tables, chairs, and supplies. Honeyman Rent-All has what you need to make any event a success. Pat and Dennis Honeyman started Honeyman Rent-All in 1968. The business started with equipment rentals and expanded in 1970 to include party rentals. The company now has two locations in Omaha: the Party Rentals Division at 11226 Wright Circle, and the Equipment Rentals Division at 4423 84th Street. Bill Reynolds is the manager of the Party Rentals Division. He has been with the company since 1975. “Our business is always evolving,” he says. “We stay on top of trends and can help customers with any type of event.” He notes that intimate weddings have been growing in popularity. Other popular events include parties for birthdays, graduations, gender reveals, quinceañeras, and the Oscars. The company also carries items for business events such as meetings, presentations, and conferences. Honeyman Rent-All can handle your rental needs for any type of event. In addition to the customary tables, chairs, linens, and serving pieces, Honeyman Rent-All carries many other items to create unique and memorable events. Planning an outdoor party? You’ll find canopies, grills, rotisseries, propane, chill tables, and ice chests to rent. Want to spice up a party or wedding? Chocolate fountains, slushie machines, soft-serve ice cream machines, and popcorn machines are just a few of the available concession items. Inflatables and children’s games are always a hit at children’s birthday parties. Planning a fundraiser? Casino games like blackjack, craps, roulette, and poker create a fun atmosphere. Arranging a business event? The company offers audio-visual equipment such as projectors, screens, and speakers. You’ll also find podiums, coat racks, and raffle cages. Risers are great for group photos to ensure that everyone will be visible. Inflatable air dancers are an attention-grabbing way to advertise a special event. Bill shares his thoughts about what customers should consider when choosing a rental company. “You can tell a lot about a company by how they care for their facility and products,” he points out. “Are you acknowledged when you enter the store? Are the
Pat Honeyman (front) with some of her staff.
staff members friendly and attentive without being pushy? Is the store clean and organized? What are the rental terms? What fees are charged?” Bill notes that Honeyman Rent-All employees spend a lot of time with customers to help create a memorable experience. For party rentals, Honeyman Rent-All charges daily fees. Items may be picked up or delivered the day before an event and returned on the day after an event for a one-day rental fee. This means you’ll be able to set up for your event the day before and focus on enjoying your event while it happens. Customers may make arrangements to pick up and return rental items, or Honeyman Rent-All can provide these services. If you’re interested in a full-service rental, the company offers delivery, set-up, tear-down, pick-up, or any combination of these services, for an additional fee. Bill notes that customer service is of utmost importance. “We always give them everything they want—if we can. If we don’t have an item in stock or it’s already booked, we search the marketplace to locate it for you. We want to make sure they can get what they want. It’s nice when customers come back and tell us their event was fantastic and our staff members were wonderful and accommodating.” Honeyman Rent-All’s Equipment Rental Division can help you with projects such as home improvement, automotive care, and lawn care. If you don’t want to purchase items that you may not use very often, why not rent? You’ll find heavy-duty equipment such as backhoes, forklifts, tractors, trailers, trenchers, and skid-steers. They have tools for prepping drywall, painting, plumbing, and floor care. Need help with your garden or lawn? Aerators, lawnmowers, lawn edgers, hedge trimmers, post drivers, and blowers are just a few of the tools you’ll find to make your job easier. Whether you’re planning a special event or working on a project, Honeyman Rent-All is your ideal rental needs partner. Give them a call, and they will help you create an event to remember or help you get your project done. Honeyman Rent-All’s Party Rental Division is located at 11226 Wright Circle, in Omaha. The Equipment Rental Division is located at 4423 84th Street, in Omaha. Call 402333-2882 for party rentals and 402-331-6013 for equipment rentals or find them both online at honeymanrentall.com. The Green Thumb
Vines in the Garden They Cling to Our Hearts
By Linda Sutherland
Vines provide the most charming and enduring beauty to their surroundings. We all have witnessed gorgeous, bloom-laden vines that cling and whirl around fences, columns, buildings, arches, and other architectural wonders. As vines hold tightly to these structures, their tendrils of vivid colors and greenery bring beauty and elegance to their supporting arches. As delicate as they appear to be, vines are remarkably tough—they are built to withstand adverse conditions and can endure difficult and harsh weather with little or no effort. Thinking of vines conjures up visions of southern mansions gracefully covered in the brightly colored bougainvillea that rambles over windows and trellises, putting out shoots and climbing over walls. They can be trained to climb over pergolas, fences, and walls with a little coaxing and can hide a myriad of unsightly garden issues. Imagine the beauty of an arched pergola or trellis in your garden, covered with trailing vines to create a welcoming greeting for visitors and family. In northern climes, bougainvillea is an annual, so you’ll have to restart it every spring. Alternatively, you can grow bougainvillea indoors in a hanging basket. Vines have many talents and can hide and enhance many outdoor situations. One of my favorites is the vigorous wisteria vine. It is a swift grower and can form a blanket on a railing or
fence in a single season. Let us say you have an ugly pole in your yard (through no fault of your own, of course), and you need to give it a face lift. A fast-growing vine like sweet potato vine will cover and mask it quickly and create the charming illusion that the pole has taken on a much kinder and gentler quality. We have all heard the term rose-covered cottage, and with climbing roses you can have one of your own. Making sure that you place them where they get at least six hours of sun, you can create a cloak of roses to trail over an entryway, front stoop, or porch. They will cover your house in a delicate fragrance as people pass through. A chain link fence cries out for various vines to cover up its industrial look. You can turn it into a living fence with a little

planning. The hyacinth bean vine is an amazing vine that grows non-stop. Once it is done blooming in the fall, it forms edible beans on the vine in place of the flowers. Morning glory vine is also a quick starter, and who does not love their beautiful blooms? The passion flower vine is also a speedy scrambler, and their intricate blossoms are stunning. Keep in mind that these three beauties in the vine family are annuals and will need to be replanted each season. If you want to plant some vines that come back every year, there are a few that cannot be beat. Perennials grow slower than annual vines, but they make up for it by enduring and sustaining year after year. Trumpet vine is a tough cookie and will wind its tendrils around anything that stands still long enough. It is vigorous and hardy and may well try to take over some other plants in its path. The delicate and romantic wisteria will perform every season. Clematis vines are quite popular, but you need patience to grow them properly. The first season you plant them, do not expect knockout blooms. Your patience will be rewarded in the years to come. Honeysuckle has that invigorating scent of long ago, but, like trumpet vines, it has been known to become invasive when given the right growing circumstances. Of course, we cannot leave out the grapevine. This woody perennial needs full sun and a sturdy support structure to be healthy. They produce some of the best fruit on earth…which can be transformed into wine! What a lovely sight to drive by or through a vineyard and see the overhanging and cascading fruit of the grapevine. I will leave the wine-making to the vintners and just soak in the beauty of the vines. There is something comforting about seeing vines draped over walkways and trellises, spilling their heady fragrance and beauty over porches and passageways while quietly reaching their tendrils toward the sun. It brings a nostalgic feeling that is hard to replicate in today’s fast-paced world, rewarding all who pass by their beckoning wisps of greenery and fragrance. A fresh breath of nature is something we all can enjoy!

Seasons of Life
All-Encompassing 24-Hour Care Long-Term Nursing Facilities
By Linda Barnes
Long-term nursing care has come a long way since one of my favorite aunts suffered a stroke many years ago. In those days, people dreaded going into a nursing home. When I visited her, there were no rehab services, social activities, or dietitian-planned meals. Now, we have superior standards of care. Today’s long-term nursing facility is a godsend for those needing extensive, around-the-clock care. Residents receive medical care, assistance with personal care, nutritious meals, and medications dispensed by trained health professionals. Social and spiritual needs are met, as are physical, occupational, and speech therapy needs. Skilled nursing care may be needed on a short-term basis, such as after an injury or surgery, for people of any age. For elderly people, it is often a long-term proposition. If only a little assistance is needed, then home care or assisted living may suffice. When that is no longer feasible, long-term nursing care is a positive choice. Finding a facility takes time but often must be done on short notice. Ideally, family members can consult with trusted physicians, colleagues, or friends about local options. One online resource that is quite helpful in evaluating facilities is Medicare’s Nursing Home Compare. Providing your city and state brings up local options (or you can search for a particular nursing home by name). You’ll see ratings for different categories such as overall
rating, health inspections, staffing, and quality measures. A star rating system helps you see, at a glance, how different facilities compare. Choose two or three to look at more closely in a detailed, side-by-side format. Once you’ve narrowed the choices, visit in person. Consider what is most important. Nursing care, physical therapy, a special unit for memory care, religious services, social activities, amenities? Location is crucial, too, so friends and family can easily visit. Is there a room available for family gatherings such as birthday parties? Look for good accessibility for people with disabilities. While you’re visiting, take notice of the people who live and work there. Do residents appear happy and well cared for? Are staff members thoughtful in their interactions with residents? Verify Medicare and Medicaid certification and other credentials. Each state works to make sure healthcare providers meet standards of safety and cost effectiveness and are compliant with all laws. Nursing homes must meet licensure requirements in order to operate. In addition, the federal agency that administers Medicare and Medicaid enforces quality standards. Nursing

homes must be certified by this agency to receive reimbursement from Medicare or Medicaid. The state must also certify a nursing home’s compliance with the Nursing Home Reform Act. Paying for long-term nursing care can be a major concern. Costs have risen considerably in recent years. In my area, the typical monthly charge is more than $7,000. For seniors, Medicare doesn’t pay for long-term nursing care, except under certain circumstances. Medicare will pay for a limited stay if one’s doctor attests to the need following a qualifying hospital stay. A patient may need specialized nursing care and rehabilitation after such things as stroke or surgery. Medicare may pay the cost for 20 days and then a portion of the cost for days 21–100. If a longer stay is needed, patients may be eligible for Medicaid, if strict income and asset requirements are met. Typically, residents spend down their own resources for care and subsequently qualify for Medicaid. Medicare Advantage plans may have different terms. In addition, veterans may have access from the Veterans Administration. The options can be a bit complicated. You can do some research online, but it might be helpful to work with a Medicare advisor who can explain the details. It is difficult to plan in advance for longterm nursing care. The federal government estimates that seven in 10 people will need some kind of long-term care, including in-home care or assisted living as well as nursing home care. The average stay is more than two years. My mother never needed skilled nursing care, while my father spent three months in long-term nursing care. I also know those who have spent years in long-term nursing facilities. Some legal arrangements may be necessary, such as a will, trust, financial power of attorney, guardianship, or advanced directives, when entering long-term care. An attorney can assist with these legal documents and review any contracts with the nursing home. Comprehensive care, along with safety features such as access control, grab bars and emergency pulls in restrooms, railings in hallways, call buttons, and alarms to prevent falls, are reassuring to residents and family. It is heartening to know that excellent long-term nursing care is readily available. The improved quality of life, health, and safety provide peace of mind for residents and for their loved ones. The Invisible Disability Treatments for Chronic Pain
By Maria Harding
How much pain is too much pain? That is entirely up to the individual. None of us can inhabit another person’s corporeal experience. All we can do is listen carefully to the descriptions offered by those who are living in conditions that are different from our own. If you have endured chronic pain, you know how difficult pain is to describe. You may also have encountered well-meaning family and friends who oversimplify your pain, offering suggestions to ice, stretch, or get a new mattress or new shoes. Managing longterm discomfort is far more nuanced. There are two types of pain: acute and chronic. Acute pain is the warning to the body to avoid doing something again, like touching a hot stove. Damaged tissue heals and the pain generally lasts less than three months. Chronic pain is an abnormal response that doesn’t go away after the body heals. It is a misfiring of nerves telling the brain that it continues to feel pain. All solutions, whether pharmaceutical, physical, or psychological, aim to gradually unlearn this pain response. Pain goes beyond the physical response. It affects our emotions, our mind, and our relationships. It can cause anxiety and depression, which, in turn, aggravate the pain. Consider mental health care as part of your pain management to help you better understand the connection between stress, depression, and chronic pain. One technique that your therapist may encourage is avoiding “pain behaviors” like groaning, rubbing, and complaining. This behavior may
Is

fuel anxiety and reinforce the brain’s pain response. Movement is vital when managing pain, but incorrect technique or sporadic workout schedules may aggravate symptoms. We may be tempted to overdo exercise on days that we feel great and stay immobile on more painful days. Finding a balance with regular exercise is best. Work with an instructor or personal trainer who encourages consistency and is familiar with chronic pain. Pain and tension form a vicious cycle. Massage therapy can be of great benefit to encourage tense muscles to release their grip in sore areas of the body. A hunched spine and shoulders put pressure on nerves, creating more pain. Relaxed, lengthened muscles can benefit the body’s posture. Chiropractors can further address posture issues. Chiropractic is a therapy that focuses on the structure of the body, particularly the spine. Practitioners manipulate the body’s alignment to decrease

pain and allow the body to heal. Chiropractors and physical therapists may also retrain our movements to avoid pain during everyday tasks such as sitting, walking, or lifting. Acupuncture is a branch of traditional Chinese medicine that promotes the flow of the body’s own natural healing energy through the application of needles, heat, and pressure. Proponents say that this stimulation relieves pain by directing energy, as well as beta-endorphins, to the affected area. Some meditative practices such as yoga or tai-chi encourage you to focus the mind on the pain and then relax into it. Rather than fight your body’s current crisis, these mindful approaches suggest meeting the body where it is at this moment. Gentle movements coax the body into an open, relaxed state, finding a balance between strength and surrender. Biofeedback therapists help train patients to control the body’s response to stress. External monitors track normally involuntary functions like heart rate, breathing, and temperature. Through relaxation exercises, biofeedback allows you to fine-tune your brainwaves to stave off painful episodes. Opioid medications (examples include hydrocodone and oxycodone) do have a place in the treatment of pain, but they are not appropriate for long-term management of chronic pain. The body develops a resistance to the drug with prolonged use, requiring a higher dosage to achieve the same result. Addiction to opioid medication can sneak up on anyone. In one year, more than 11.5 million Americans reported becoming addicted to prescription opioids—as many as one in four who receive long-term prescriptions to manage pain. Withdrawal from the drug can cause debilitating symptoms, including pain. With the suggestions above, I have not meant to be that “well-meaning friend” who oversimplifies pain; only you can evaluate your own needs. Hopefully, your health professionals will help you find the right combination of therapies to bring you relief. Be open to all possible solutions, and try to minimize anxiety as you explore options. If you find yourself asking whether you want to continue living because of your relentless pain, please seek help immediately by calling the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK(8255). If you or someone you love struggles with an addiction, help is available at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration at 1-800-662HELP(4357). Racing Toward the Holidays Great Gifts for Car Lovers
By Linda Sutherland
We all love giving the perfect gift. For some of us, the gift list includes people who simply love their car...people who pay extra attention to their vehicle and take meticulous care of it...people who have something of a love affair going on with their car. No gift would make them happier than a creative gift for their vehicle. If you are a car lover yourself, you no doubt have many ideas for fascinating gifts, but how do you approach gift shopping for an auto enthusiast when your own enthusiasm for autos is…a little lacking? Search no more! Let’s take a look at some of the most exciting and trendy ideas (and some practical ones, too). For the SUV lover who needs more storage for a rugged trip, the Thule Motion XT XXL cargo box would be well received. It has an easy-mount hard-shell roof rack and dual side openings, making it easy to access the gear inside. Its sleek design looks great going down the road. For people who love their cars but hate picking up the kids’ things from the back seat, the PALMOO car seat back organizer is both a luxury and a must. This beauty has nine separate pockets, fits over the seat backs, and can easily accommodate all the accessories needed for long and short trips. Another gift idea for a family vehicle is adding an amplifier to improve the sound system. This is great for long road trips when the kids watch movies or for when the family jam comes on and you want to crank it up. For people who work on the road, the WheelMate Extreme Vehicle Desk has a brilliant design that attaches to the steering wheel—while the vehicle is in park, of course! It can easily support a tablet or laptop and is great for writing or even eating on the go. Now that winter is here, heated seats are the add-on that we all want! Luckily, almost any vehicle can have heated seats installed. While we’re talking about help with chilly winter mornings, a remote car starter should be on everyone’s gift list. These can also easily be added on to most vehicles. The remotes are convenient to carry, some have ranges of up to one mile, and some even come complete with a security system. There are devices out now that can read, interpret, and clear computer codes that are associated with dashboard warning lights in cars and trucks. This dandy tool is powered via the car’s own electrical system, so no batteries are required. It will look for trouble codes, recalls, and maintenance specifications. It can also generate a report with potential ways to resolve issues that are identified during the scan. Winter is no time to be stuck somewhere, needing a jumpstart. If no one is around to help, it’s inconvenient at best and dangerous at worst. Luckily, there are nifty portable jump starters now that make it much less of a headache and safely start on a single charge for gasoline engines. Some offer a portable battery bank to charge your USB devices. Some even include an LED flashlight! Even the most ardent car lovers can be counted on to misplace their car keys occasionally. A car key finder would be the perfect gift for any kind of vehicle owner. These 52
December 2020
Bluetooth-enabled trackers go on the key chain, and users can find their lost keys through the associated app on their phone. As a premium bonus, you can also use the car keys to find the phone, if that’s the item that’s been misplaced! Popular brands include Tile, Chipolo, and Orbit. Car lovers who are frequent travelers will get a ton of use out of an Uber Appliance Chill Mini Fridge. This personal mini fridge is sized to hold six cans or four bottles of your recipient’s favorite beverage. It could also hold sandwiches, fruit, or other perishables that need to be kept cool on the go. It plugs into the cigarette lighter in the vehicle, so there’s no need to worry about ice. This mini fridge can also plug in to a standard wall outlet. It’s great for desktops in the office or dorm—what a versatile gift! Those on your list who love their Amazon Alexa can now bring it out to the car. Access news, music, and navigation with voice control. Alexa can even check calendars and the weather. No need to pull over to write something down— drivers can keep both hands on the wheel while setting reminders or creating to-do lists. Jump on your gift shopping list with these ideas for car lovers. Your gifts are sure to be well received! Pet Concierge Services
Professionals Offer Extraordinary Care
By Brie Hellbusch
It goes without saying that most pet owners want the very best for their animals—even if that means spoiling their four-legged friends from time to time. Going the extra mile by using professional pet concierge services is one way that many pet parents show their love for their pet. As much as pet owners would like to be able to care for their pet at all times, certain circumstances can prevent that from happening. For example, work obligations, physical injuries, vacations, and emergency situations can make it hard for pet owners to be the sole caregiver for their pet. Luckily, pet concierge services are ready and waiting to step in. The options are vast and can range from pet transportation to in-home pet sitting and everything in between. Some pet owners will enlist a service provider to care for pets while they’re away from home on a trip; others choose to use these services regularly throughout the year. When owners are away from home for an extended period of time, there’s really no option but to have someone supervise the animals staying behind. In many cases, owners choose in-home pet sitting. This service allows animals to remain in their safe, secure home environment, surrounded by familiar sights, smells, and sounds. This eliminates the stress of travel or an unfamiliar environment and ensures that the pet is not exposed to other animals' illness or parasites. It also means pets can follow their regular diet and exercise routines while also receiving ample play time and personal attention. Some pet concierge services can even administer medication and specialized meals as instructed by the pet owner. Even better, these pet professionals are often trained to handle emergency situations and can administer medical treatment when needed. These are just the perks for the animal—there are a lot of benefits for pet owners, too. First and foremost, knowing that their pet is in caring and capable hands alleviates a lot of stress for pet parents. It also means pet owners no longer have to ask friends, family, or neighbors to swing by to care for their pet when they’re away. Professional pet sitters are likely to be bonded and insured for the safety of your pet and your home. Be sure to ask! In addition to pet sitting services, many pet owners are choosing pet walking or hiking services, which provide socialization and leash training throughout each scheduled session. Some providers send updates and photos so that pet owners can witness their furry friend in action on the trail. The length of the walk depends on the preference of the owner, making it a very accommodating option. This service is especially popular with elderly pet owners and those who have physical limitations that make it hard to keep up with an energetic dog. They are also popular with owners who
work long hours and might not be able to take their dogs for sufficient walks. Dog walking services can ensure that pets get the appropriate amount of exercise and time with other animals. Plus, dogs love a new adventure and new smells! Many pet concierge providers offer services that can assist with transporting pets to things like grooming appointments and vet visits. A pet taxi alleviates the stress of making the proper preparations for traveling with a pet. In addition to driving pets to appointments, some service providers also offer emergency transportation (including supportive medical treatment en route) and even transportation to the airport. Many pet owners are unfamiliar with pet traveling regulations; a pet taxi pro alleviates worry of making the wrong move or breaking a rule. By choosing a transport company, pet owners are receiving expert care by trained professionals who know the ins and outs of the pet travel industry. It’s important to research options and various businesses before choosing the pet concierge service that’s right for you and your pet. Ask others for recommendations and interview potential candidates before inviting them to care for a beloved furry friend. Pet care is similar to child care in that young children and pets are unable to speak up if something negative occurs, which is why the interview process should be taken very seriously to avoid any harmful consequences. As with humans, caring for an animal can require help from others. This is especially true when pet owners are physically unable to be there for their animal. For this reason, entrusting professionals who are trained and know exactly how to care for animals is the smartest move to make. Plus, a little extra love and attention never hurts! specializes in camouflage, corrections, and removal of previously botched permanent makeup procedures. Many of these services Vicki performs on both women and men in a five-state area. Vicki has been in the beauty industry for 25 years. She owns Attitudes Salon in Council Bluffs, which opened over 23 years ago. Vicki has taught cosmetology and Esthetics. She was Esthetics Director for permanent makeup at Capitol School for 17 years. “My first training was at Midwest Institute of Permanent Cosmetics, where I learned the SofTap™ method of permanent makeup from Dottie Adley, RN,CRNA,” she shares. She went on to study at The International Institute of Permanent Cosmetics in California, where she learned the latest technology in permanent makeup. She continues her education yearly by attending advanced training, including Organic Permanent Cosmetics, in California, which is used mostly in corrections and camouflage; and Esthetic World of Beauty in Chicago; and Girlzink in Las Vegas. Vicki is a long-standing member of The Society of Permanent Cosmetics Professionals and is licensed and insured to practice in Nebraska and Iowa. She added Brows 24/7 in her Attitudes Salon in Council Bluffs 18 years ago and opened an Omaha location four years ago. Vicki loves using her skills and talents to help women who are recovering from breast cancer. Vicki took advanced training from the Beau Institute in New Jersey for areola reconstruction and scar revision. She explains, “Many times, women are left with scar tissue, which can be camouflaged and lessen the appearance with dry needling. These procedures help make the breasts look more natural.”Vicki finds this work particularly rewarding
because she lost a sister to breast cancer. The scar revision technique can be used on all types of scars. Brows should follow the client’s brow line, when possible, to keep them more natural. When having brows done, clients have options. Microblading is a very natural hair stroke look. Another technique is the Powder Brow, which has a more solid color effect. The third option is a combination of the two techniques. “I include my clients in all decisions regarding what they want done,”Vicki says. “It’s much easier to change things before we do them than correct it after.” “My brows became nearly invisible as I got older,” says Mary Lee. “Vicki used more numbing agent to counteract my low pain tolerance. She also did my upper lids—it was too hard getting liner on straight. I’m very happy with the results!” Sandi S. shares, “Vicki cleaned up a botched brow job…my brows look beautiful now!” Vicki advises that anyone shopping for a permanent makeup artist should do diligent research. “Look into more than cost,” she advises. “Also consider experience, licensing, training, insurance, and cleanliness.” Jessica J. had her lips done 11 years ago, then had her brows and eyeliner done four years ago. “Vicki is the only one I trust doing permanent makeup on my face,” she says. Brows 24/7 Permanent Makeup is located in Attitudes Salon at 1702 West Broadway, Suite 3, in Council Bluffs and The Healing Place, 2030 North 72nd Street, in Omaha. Call her at 402-650-0777. Divorce and Mediation Finding a Path Forward
By Angella A. Arndt
Marriage is an intimate connection, a declaration of love, and a commitment to the future. Sadly, relationships do not always work out as planned, and not all marriages have a happy ending. In 2018, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, approximately 36 percent of marriages ended in divorce or annulment. The process of uncoupling can be overwhelming. It helps to consider a few things before moving forward.
There are different types of divorce. Uncontested, collaborative, or mediated divorces are options for amicable situations. In an uncontested divorce, both parties file their paperwork separately with the court and reach a mutual agreement. A collaborative divorce is handled outside of court. Each spouse hires an attorney, and they come to an agreement together instead of leaving decisions up to a judge. A mediated divorce involves hiring a mediator to resolve issues outside of court, without the services of an attorney. For complex or contentious situations, a litigated divorce may be the best option. In this instance, spouses hire separate attorneys to represent them and reach an agreement with the other side. No matter what type of divorce process you’re going through, selecting the right mediator or attorney is an important decision. A mediator’s role is to remain neutral, to educate both spouses about the law, and to empower them to make informed decisions. Attorneys, local bar associations, local legal aid offices, financial advisors, and friends who have been through a divorce are good sources for referrals. Interview potential mediators and ask questions. There should be a good rapport with the mediator so everyone can work together effectively. A divorce attorney's duties can range from giving advice and preparing and reviewing documents to handling an entire divorce case. To select an attorney, get referrals from close friends or family members who have been through a divorce, lawyers, financial advisors, or the American Bar Association Family Law Section. Set up an initial consultation and interview potential candidates. An attorney should listen, understand goals, be compatible, and be candid about the case. There are several components to consider when navigating through this process, such as dividing assets and liabilities, alimony, healthcare coverage, and child custody and support, if applicable. Thinking about and preparing to discuss these items will help during the negotiation process. 56
December 2020
Assets and liabilities come in many forms, and the division of property can be a point of contention. Typical assets include real estate, bank accounts, and vehicles. Other assets include investments, brokerage accounts, retirement plans, pensions, stocks, and life insurance policies. Don’t forget about physical items like art, antiques, home furnishings, and valuable collections. Sorting through all of the financial complexities can be difficult. A financial advisor, in conjunction with an attorney, can assist with planning for future financial stability. Alimony, or spousal support, is generally granted when one spouse earns significantly more money than the other, and they have been married for several years. A couple may agree on an alimony arrangement and present it to the court. If an agreement cannot be reached, the court will set the alimony terms. Health insurance is an essential consideration if one spouse carries insurance for the entire family. When the divorce becomes final, the non-policyholder cannot stay on the insurance policy, but eligible children may remain. If the spouse without insurance cannot obtain it through his or her employer, a temporary arrangement may be needed. If a couple has children, child custody and support will need to be addressed. The two primary types of child custody are sole custody and joint custody. In sole custody, one parent has exclusive custody of the child. Sole custody is usually awarded in situations where the other parent is unfit or incapable of taking care of the child. Joint custody means that the child spends time with both parents. If the couple cannot agree on a custody arrangement, a judge will decide in court. Child support includes things such as child care, health insurance, and education, sometimes including college. A judge considers factors such as income, number of children, and time spent with each parent when making a determination. Individuals facing a divorce often experience significant emotional and mental turmoil. In these situations, therapy may be beneficial. Therapy benefits include help processing emotions, maintaining a rational perspective, learning coping skills, communicating better with the ex-spouse, helping children through the process, and maintaining a positive outlook. Many people benefit from individual therapy. If children are involved, they may also benefit from therapy, whether individual or with a parent. A divorce is a life-changing experience for the entire family. Thoughtful consideration, realistic goals, and hiring the right professionals can help you navigate this challenging period and plan for a brighter future. Home Works
Water Filtration Systems The Key to Clean, Healthy Water
By Anne Yankus
We’ve all spent a lot of thought on cleaning this year, but something that hasn’t really come up is cleaning water. You may be lucky enough to live in an area without any obvious water contamination, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider cleaning up the water in your home! Installing a water cleaning or filtration system in your home has many benefits, from keeping your drinking water free of unhealthy bacteria to helping your appliances run more efficiently. Before rushing out to buy a water system, you need to identify exactly what you want it to do. There are many different kinds of water systems that do any number of different jobs. Do you have hard water? Does your water look dirty? Maybe your water just tastes slimy and gross? There are systems and filters for all those problems and more; you just need to find the right one for you and your home. For issues that only affect drinking water, you can probably get away with a simple carbon-based water filter. Most new refrigerators come with a water filtration unit built in. These are great for filtering out things like chlorine, radon, man-made chemicals, volatile organic chemicals, and benzene. They’re also at least partially effective when removing other contaminants, like lead, rust, and sediment. However, carbon-based filters offer little protection when it comes to filtering out heavier metals or inorganic compounds. Fortunately, not everywhere has such hardy contaminants in the
Pretty Tile, Ugly Grout? BEFORE
water supply. For places that do, you’ll want to look into something a little more robust than just your fridge filter. When it comes to drinking water, bottled water may seem like a cheap alternative to buying a filtration system. Bottled water does afford you the benefits of clean and healthy drinking water at a lower upfront cost than buying most filtration systems. However, constantly buying bottled water may end up costing you more than a simple water filter in the long run, and it won’t do anything to extend the life of your appliances the way that larger in-home filtration systems can. (Plus, all those bottles!) If the water coming out of your faucet is visibly dirty, you may want to look into a sediment filter. Sediment filters use mechanical filtration to remove dirt and debris that are usually due to rust or copper from corroded pipes or things like silt from rainwater. Since sediment filters only remove visible dirt and debris (and do nothing to protect your water from chemicals or other contaminants),

they’re often used in conjunction with other filtration systems. Another type of filtration is distillation. Distillers are one of the oldest types of filtration systems around. Essentially, they boil the water, collecting the cleaner water using a condenser and leaving contaminants behind. Distillers do remove a broad range of contaminants and are reusable, but some contaminants (like herbicides and pesticides) can be carried into the condensate. Distilled water is also not particularly tasty, as the process removes most of the oxygen and leaves the water tasting flat and slightly acidic. Distillers also have the disadvantage of consuming large amounts of energy to function. One of the newest types of filtration is called kinetic degradation fluxion (KDF) media. KDF uses high-purity alloys and electrochemical oxidation reduction to kill algae and fungi and control bacteria growth, as well as removing contaminants like pesticides, heavy metals, and unpleasant taste. Like sediment filters, KDF is often used in conjunction with other filtration systems. One of the most effective types of water filtration systems on the market is the reverse osmosis system. Reverse osmosis uses a combination of sediment pre-filtration and a semi-permeable membrane to remove all chemical contaminants. Reverse osmosis systems will remove everything that sediment and carbon-based filters miss. Unfortunately, they cannot remove microorganisms. Last, but not least, many homes have problems with mineral contamination, otherwise known as hard water. For that, you’ll want to look into a water softener. There are two main kinds of water softeners on the market: salt-based and salt-free. Salt-based water softeners are most effective at completely removing all minerals like calcium and magnesium from your water supply, which will eliminate any new hard water staining and lengthen the life of all your water-based appliances. Salt-free softeners are cheaper than salt-based, and they have the benefit of not having to use a chemical softener. Rather than eliminating your mineral contaminants, salt-free softeners neutralize them so that they no longer adhere to surfaces around your house. Getting cleaner, healthier water for you and your family could be just one filter away! Call your local water filtration store to find out what system would work best for you. Caring Senior Service
By Linda Sutherland
We’re There When You Can’t Be
At some point in our lives, many of us will need to go down an unfamiliar road to ensure that our loved ones have excellent care as they age. With that in mind, Caring Senior Service can be a lifeboat in navigating unknown territory. June Mourgis is the owner of Caring Senior Service and Shirley Tingley is the administrator. These two compassionate women have made it their life’s work to bring peace of mind when people need it most. They are dedicated to providing high-quality care and the best senior living possible with every client. In fact, their mission statement is:“We believe that every senior should be able to remain healthy, happy, and at home.”They work every day to live up to that mission, and they’re doing exceedingly well. June recognizes that seniors need to continue to feel that they are in control of their lives and that they can live safely and independently at home. As people age, many of them need more assistance or supervision in order to live safely. Early on, it may be possible for family members to tend to their loved ones’ increasing needs. As time goes on and the need for care increases, families may no longer be able to provide all the care their loved one needs in the time they can spend together. Work, family, and other responsibilities limit everyone’s time, and it can be hard to maintain peace of mind when you’re worried that a loved one needs more attention than you can give. The team at Caring Senior Service is completely devoted to providing this care. The team provides a wide range of services for their clients. They provide personal care to help clients maintain their appearance and hygiene and are happy to provide medication reminders. They can perform light housekeeping when clients are unable to do so. They offer companionship for their clients, including conversation over tea and playing cards or games—whatever the client prefers. The caregivers at Caring Senior Service can also help with things outside the home that clients are no longer able to do unassisted. They can take pets for a walk or run errands for their clients. If the clients need transportation to and from appointments or prefer to go along during errands, caregivers are happy to assist. An important part of Caring Senior Service is that the team creates a distinct service plan that is tailored to each individual—there is no cookie cutter process here. The list of responsibilities is based on each client’s needs and will be clearly outlined in advance. They know that needing caregiving assistance can be stressful for both the client and his or her family, and they strive to make it a peaceful time for everyone involved. This is family-like care at its finest! If you think that

you or a family member may require their services, a Caring Senior Service staff member will do a home visit to assess and evaluate what specific services would be of greatest benefit. They are also happy to work in tandem with hospice care, ensuring that non-medical needs are met during the end of life. June and Shirley feel that they are filling a need that requires compassion and enthusiasm for families who seek love and loyalty for their more vulnerable members. Their belief in the value of what they do is very compelling, and their empathy for families is admirable. June has been the owner of Caring Senior Service for 11 years and feels that this is her true calling. Shirley has been in the Standing up for seniors and business of helping seniors for decades; their needs is a lifelong mission she believes that there for these two women, who is nothing she would rather be doing. emphatically state that their Standing up for seniors and their team of caregivers is what needs is a lifelong makes Caring Senior Service mission for these two women, who emphatthe caring place that it is. ically state that their team of caregivers is what makes Caring Senior Service the caring place that it is. Their team members are the strength and support that comprise the core of their agency, June and Shirley assert. They are proud to be leading a great team of caregivers who strive to provide the best care possible. The team, they say, is truly the foundation of this agency. Caring Senior Service does a remarkable job of treating seniors with dignity and respect, and they come highly recommended. Caring Senior Service provides superior care 24 hours a day, seven days a week, making it possible for seniors to stay in their homes comfortably and safely. Isn’t that what we all want? Spa Vacation Getaways My Top 7 Choices
By Jackie Williams
Are you ready for a real vacation? One of relaxation, pampering, and much-needed“me time”? I have found seven spectacular spa destinations in the United States for you to choose from. Read on as you sit back and imagine cucumber slices being placed over your eyes while gentle music plays in the background and your cares melt away…. The Spa at Sea Island. Located on the Atlantic coast of Georgia, conveniently between the Jacksonville and Savannah International airports, this Forbes five-star spa and fitness facility boasts an amazing 65,000 square feet. Relax before your treatment in the eucalyptus-infused steam room, mineral pool, and hydrotherapy pool, and you will be like putty in your therapist’s hands. The fitness center hosts over 50 group classes, or you can be active outside. With five miles of private beach, three champion golf courses, and award-winning accommodations, staying at Sea Island is a fantastic all-around vacation; when you throw the spa into it—well, it will be your best holiday yet! The Spa at the Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee. Another gem in Georgia, the spa at the Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee, is easy to get to from Atlanta. It boasts over 27,000 square feet and comes complete with indoor pool, plunge pools, saunas, and steam rooms. Located right on the lake, the environment truly makes you slow down. Book a club room during your stay to take advantage of the great amenities in the club lounge, and then have the concierge book your first spa treatment: the Georgian, complete with exfoliation, red clay mask, Vichy shower, and massage. You won’t want to leave. The Spa at Omni Grove Park Inn. This Omni hotel property in Asheville, North Carolina, is so popular for its spa that it has a separate “Spa Vacations” tab on its website. The hardest choice you will make is from their menu of wonderful body treatments, like the Mountain Honey Wrap or a full sensory experience called Fire, Rock, Water, and Light. With scenic views of the Blue Mountains and 43,000 square feet of subterranean spa, the spa at Omni Grove Park Inn is in high demand. Ensure access by booking a club room while staying at the resort and enjoy the spa amenities during your stay. Kohler Waters Spa at American Club Resort. Renew and recharge at Destination Kohler in Wisconsin. Similar to Central Park in New York City, the Village of Kohler is a huge green space with parks, biking and hiking trails, gardens, golf courses, and more. Enjoy the beautiful surroundings during your stay with your choice of accommodations. The Kohler Waters Spa is one of only 64 five-star spas in the world, and, of course, you will need to take advantage of their hydrotherapy treatments. Book the Acoustic Bath with massage and Thermal Hydro Body Wrap and then go back to your room for the best sleep of your life. Afterwards, you will be remodeling your bathroom at home with these showers!
Ranch Creek Spa at Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort & Spa. This is one of my own personal favorites. Perfect during the winter, after an active day of cross-country skiing or snowboarding, indulge in an afternoon at the Ranch Creek Spa in Tabernash, Colorado. It all starts with a steam shower and aromatherapy room while you await your Signature Massage. Afterwards, sit outside in the fresh mountain air, wrapped in your fluffy robe and sipping a cup of tea, taking in the beautiful and peaceful view. Miraval Resorts. The main property is in Arizona, but there is also a location in Austin and one opening soon in the Berkshires (in Massachusetts). If you are looking for an all-inclusive spa vacation, Miraval does it right. All packages include accommodations, meals, snacks, wellness activities, lectures, and fitness classes. Different amounts of resort credit goes to your spa treatments. These are great facilities for total wellness and girls’ getaways. Glen Ivy Hot Springs. This hidden gem in Corona, California, isn’t so hidden anymore. Come for the day to unwind alone or with friends, nosh on healthy food, join in the fitness classes, take advantage of therapeutic treatments, and relax among Glen Ivy’s 19 pools, Club Mud, and the Grotto. You will love it! The hard part is deciding where to go. Have your travel agent keep you informed of airfare deals. Most of these spas are affiliated with or in a resort—you can stay for an entire vacation or choose to go to the spa just for the day. Either way, I would recommend booking at least a month ahead. Whether you’re looking for simple relaxation or total body wellness, one of these spa vacation destinations will definitely soothe your soul. Positive Perspective
More Cheese?
Listen to Your Heart
By Janet Van deWalle
My husband, Manny, and I had my daughter,
Carissa, and her family over a couple of weeks ago to watch the Husker football game. I was busy making chicken enchiladas for us. Savannah, my 15-year-old granddaughter, was helping me. I had assembled the enchiladas in the pan and it was time to put the shredded cheese on top. I carefully measured out the required cup, looked at Savannah, and asked, “Is that enough?” Her reply: “You don’t measure cheese with a cup, you measure it with your heart…just like chocolate chips!” —Savannah Rosa What a terrific response! We then proceeded to pile on more than the recipe called for—a lot more—and the enchiladas turned out terrific. This interaction got me thinking about how important it is for us to listen to our hearts…really listen…to ensure that we are taking the right path for us. As I look around, I have been observing how many of us are reacting to situations, instead of taking a moment and refraining from acting upon our knee-jerk responses. We have forgotten to be kind. We have forgotten to listen to our hearts.

“The most useful asset of a person is not a head full of knowledge, but a heart full of love, with ears open to listen, and hands willing to help.”—Anonymous I feel as if, over the last year, many of us have allowed our souls to be inundated with so much information that it has put us on edge. Drivers seem to be driving faster, people in stores are more irritated (or irritating), and many close relationships are becoming…shall we say…strained. “Just when you feel you have no time to relax, know that this is the moment you most need to make time to relax.” —Matt Haig Slowing down, taking a break, and allowing ourselves to listen to our hearts will make for a happier day, week, month, and year. Making the decision to listen to our hearts will ensure that we don’t go in the wrong direction. “Your visions will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakens.” —Carl Jung
