Love All Month Long February…the month of LOVE! I think the timing of this month is perfect. We have made it through the holidays and the chill of January. It’s a terrific month to express our heartfelt feelings to those in our circle. Love takes many different forms, and when it is right, it feels so good. If you have lived on this planet more than a couple of decades, most likely you have experienced the love of parents, children, siblings, friends, and lovers. I think the purest form of love that any of us experience is love from babies, particularly when they are about six months old. Their energy lights up the room when they are there. I’m guessing most of you have experienced the laughter of a sixmonth-old. It is literally contagious. They squeal out loud in delight! There is no ignoring them. They want us all to know how happy they are. I love it. I think we all can learn from these little ones. They don’t have the “manners” required to contain their joy. They don’t care if they are in church, at a family get-together, or around complete strangers. They laugh, giggle, and spread their love. I wish we could all be this simple, this pure, this happy. What do you think? Good goal for 2021? Instead of celebrating love just on February 14th, I think I will work the entire month to find ways to help others feel loved and appreciated. I want to do this not only for the people in my circle but for those who are perfect strangers. It is quite easy to connect and bring joy to someone’s day. A smile, opening the door for another person, introducing yourself to your server at the restaurant, saying please and thank you…all of this will help complete strangers have a better day. Sometimes, of course, we run into someone who is having a “bad day.” I feel it is even more important to help these individuals turn things around. We can do this one person at a time. The great thing about this goal is that the love we put out comes back to us. On a personal note, I want to wish my husband, Manny, a fabulous Valentine’s Day. I know it will be very special for both of us, as this is our second Valentine’s Day as a married couple. I love you, Manny! Have a great love of a month!

Heat to melt the butter, then bring to a boil on medium heat. Boil for 3 minutes, then remove from heat. Carefully pour the butter mixture over the saltines—spread out evenly. Baked Shrimp over Rice Melt 1 stick of butter in a 9x13-inch casserole. Pour in 1 bag of shrimp (thawed). Sprinkle an envelope of Italian dressing over the shrimp, as well as a teaspoon of Old Bay seasoning (if you have it on hand) and some cracked black pepper. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes, until the shrimp are pink. Serve (with the juices) with your favorite rice. This is an easy Lenten dish! One-Pan Sausage Dinner In a small bowl, combine 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of cracked black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon of paprika, and 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder. Line a rimmed cookie sheet with foil. Peel and chunk-cut 4 potatoes and trim the ends from 1/2 pound of fresh green beans (or use frozen). Spread out the vegetables on the foil. Drizzle with 2–3 Tablespoons of olive oil and sprinkle the spices all over. Roast at 400 degrees for 25 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and spread 2 pounds of smoked ringed sausage (kielbasa) over the veggies. Bake for another 20–25 minutes. Serve with a green salad and fresh Italian toasts. Decorated Butter Cookies Combine 1 cup of soft butter with 1/2 cup of sugar and 1 egg—mix for 5 minutes. Add 2 and 1/4 cups of flour, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla or almond extract. Blend well. To shape the cookies, you can form the dough into balls and stamp them, roll out the dough and use cookie cutters, or use a cookie press. Color the dough, if you wish. Bake at 400 degrees for 5–6 minutes. Cool completely. Frost and use decorator sugars or drizzle with ganache. Chicken in a Pot Rinse and pat dry a 3-pound chicken. Slather the chicken with softened butter combined with minced garlic and other herbs that you like. Stuff the cavity with sliced onions, celery leaves, and sliced lemons. Make a bed of sliced onion, celery, and carrots in the bottom of a Dutch oven. Place the chicken on top of the vegetables and squeeze a bit of

lemon juice on top. Add a few cut-up potatoes, if desired. Roast at 475 degrees (uncovered) for 15 minutes, then lower the heat to 350 degrees. Roast for about 2 hours, until the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 165 degrees. Let rest for 10 minutes. Use the pan juices to make gravy, if desired. Hot Curry Fish Dish Slice a small fennel bulb, a red onion, and 1 pound of cleaned baby Yukon gold potatoes. Put the vegetables into a baking pan or casserole dish with 2 Tablespoons of olive oil. Salt and pepper the veggies and roast in a 425-degree oven for 35 minutes. Melt 4 Tablespoons of butter in a saucepan. Add 2 or 3 crushed cloves of garlic, a small piece of fresh chopped ginger, and 1 teaspoon of prepared curry powder. Cook on medium for 4-5 minutes, stir a few times, and remove from heat. Let the sauce sit for a few minutes. Remove the roasted vegetables from the oven and stir. Place a 1–2 pound piece (or pieces) of white fish (cod, haddock, pollock) on top of the vegetables. Salt and pepper the fish and spoon the curry butter over the top. Turn oven temperature down to 350 degrees and bake (uncovered) for 12–15 minutes, until the fish flakes apart. Serve with lemon wedges and crusty parmesan toasts. Easy Cherry Bars Blend together 3 cups of flour, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1 and 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder. In a large mixing bowl, beat 1 cup of soft butter with 1 and 3/4 cups of sugar. Add 3 eggs and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Mix well. Gradually add the flour mixture. Reserving 1 and 1/2 cups of the dough, press the remaining dough onto the bottom of a lightly greased 15x10-inch jelly roll pan. Bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees. Remove the pan from the oven. Spread a 21-ounce can of cherry pie filling over the crust and dollop the rest of the dough randomly over the pie filling. Bake for another 30 minutes, until light brown. Cool, drizzle with powdered sugar icing, and cut into bars.

Spring is on Its Way! Let Color Lift You Up By Holly Bell

Although we may still be struggling with our boots and woolly sweaters, spring will soon be on its way. While we look forward to feeling that warm sun on our faces again, let’s take a look at Pantone’s color choices for the year. The Pantone Color Institute is the authority on color trends in the design world, and the team has summed up its color choices this year as“cheery and sunny.”Thank goodness! We could all use a little optimism in our lives as we wait to get a little bit back to normal. This spring, colors will be infused with energy, vitality, and positive spirit. Spring is coming along just when we need it! Let us enjoy the warm color of Marigold. This deep golden yellow with a touch of orange can pull anyone out of the winter doldrums. Even people who usually cannot wear orange or yellow look great in this golden tone. It is a sun-saturated hue that warms up even the gloomiest day. Another wonderful color tone we will be able to find this spring is Cerulean Blue. It is meant to recall the sky on a sunny spring day and is calming and cheerful. Who doesn’t appreciate a clear blue sky after a dreary winter? Other upbeat colors on the spring 2021 list include selections such as Illuminating Yellow and Buttercream. Yum! This year, most of us have focused on comfort over high style. I’m sure we’re all glad to hear that comfort will carry forward into 2021, but in an updated way. Designers are using fabrics that are ultra-soft and have generous stretch. Knits are a great way to accomplish both softness and stretch, and we all love the feel of a soft knit against our skin. Crochet will be popular this spring. It’s trendy, it’s comfortable, and it can be easily layered with pieces already in your closet for great versatility. Cutouts have been a popular trend for the past couple of years, and they’re still going strong. A few well-placed cutouts can bring a simple solid-color dress or top to the next level of chic and sexy, while still being tasteful. Some fresh new looks to try this spring involve the oversized button-front white shirt. I say “looks” because this item has many uses, if you use your imagination. This piece can be worn first as a dress (feel free to add leggings if you need them)! Worn open with a tank or camisole underneath, it can serve 10

February 2021

www.womensedition.com

as a jacket. This look is pulled-together and tailored. Of course, you can gather and tie the front two tails together and leave the back long for a fun look over jeans. The half tuck in the front is also such a good look right now. Watch out, husbands! Your wives may be stealing your good white shirts for their own! Another fresh trend is slippers. We’ve been wearing these a lot for the past several months and do not want to give them up! Designers have caught on to the trend and feature a great variety of “slippers” that can be worn anywhere. Most of these are of the mule, slip-on style. Many have furry embellishments or bows or are enhanced with wild patterns. What a comfortable trend to try! Pastel colors will be on trend this year, featuring lilac, sky blues, and rosy pinks. These spring colors are so refreshing after a winter of black and gray. Gradually adding in pastels with your winter colors is a great way to get a jump on spring! “Matchy-matchy” generally refers to an outfit that is excessively coordinated. This used to be a fashion no-no, but it’s back in full force this spring, with jackets, pants, skirts, tops, and blouses all looking good in matching colors and patterns. When sporting the matched look, keep everything else chic and simple to let the color or pattern be the head-to-toe focus. Spring florals will be back in the mix for 2021, allowing for some innovative (and distinctly non-matchy) pairings with stripes, checks, patchwork, and even tiedye! It’s time to bring that fun hippie front and center—you know, the one who’s been hiding in sweatpants all winter. Don’t forget those shoulders! What started out as a subtle nod to the bold shoulder has come back strong for spring. Have fun finding peaked, gathered, and padded shoulders in everything from tees to jackets to ballgowns. These are so fashion-forward looking and can be very flattering. Even though it’s still gray and cold outside, stores are offering some spring 2021 sunshine. Have fun checking out new spring colors and fresh trends. Before you know it, crocuses and tulips will be popping up all over!

A Woman’s Work

Our Shortest Month 28 Days of Groundhogs and Sweethearts By Sharon Knierim

February may be the shortest month of the year, but it holds the opportunity for much activity and fun. When we were children (a long time ago), elementary school art classes featured the making of presidential profiles. Every year, we would cut out stylized profiles of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. These were always proudly mounted on bulletin boards around the room. We were not aware that there had been lots of other presidents until we advanced a few years in our education. Groundhog Day was another big occasion during the month of February. Would Phil the groundhog see his shadow, or would he be too shy or lazy to emerge from his den? We didn’t participate in any classroom gambling, but we all had a chance to speculate on whether or not we would see this furry little forecaster. The teacher would draw a line down the middle of the blackboard before giving each student the opportunity to make a prediction. Of course, there was no science to this, but at least we had a fifty-fifty chance. The losers in this contest were responsible for keeping the classroom sparkling clean for the next week. Come to think of it, maybe there was some classroom gambling, after all. February was the zenith of all things love as we celebrated St. Valentine’s Day. As amateur artists, everyone drew or fashioned

MPTS

hearts and Cupids carrying love arrows aimed at the hearts of those about to be smitten. Hearts were cut out of red construction paper and decorated with glitter or doilies. Some of them were festooned with little bits of aluminum foil. There was always a classroom party for Valentine’s Day. We made our own valentine boxes from emptied oatmeal boxes, shoeboxes, or any container no longer being used. As Valentine’s Day approached, children would drop their cards into their classmates’ boxes. These cards would be viewed during the party, as we all looked for significant clues from secret admirers. We must have been a very romantic young generation! Treats were always served at these parties, and everyone had a good time.

Every four years, on February 29th, we would celebrate Sadie Hawkins Day, on which the girls asked the boys to a dance or party. A few overenthusiastic girls proposed marriage, which was a bit premature for seven and eight years old. Naturally, they were turned down, but I think the boys reveled in the opportunity to learn which of their female classmates were looking in their direction. Some of us girls were too shy to proclaim our admiration for any of the boys in the class; we remained silent in our devotion to them. Of course, we were all cured of the love bug by March 1st (the next day, that is), and everything was back to business as usual. As adults, we still acknowledge these important February events. We still take time to celebrate Presidents Day, but now we acknowledge these leaders with sales of all kinds and paid days off. Government offices lock their doors, and no business is conducted in them. Though we are not usually cutting out presidential profiles, we do recognize these men as important persons who made our country strong. We still take a break to see what the groundhog is doing on February 2nd. It’s a tough job, predicting how long winter will last before spring breaks through, but he does his best. He’s always in the spotlight as newscasters make a big fuss over him, and we generally have a good time with this tradition. Of course, the blockbuster for the month of February is Valentine’s Day, for children and adults alike. Once again, there is Cupid with those arrows and lots of hearts and flowers. For some folks, this is one of those days filled with stress and pressure…especially for those gentlemen who did not plan ahead. A dozen roses is a solid bet, but what color should they be? Red might be too strong, but pink roses might not give the full impact of his feelings. It’s a tough decision, and you have to make sure to get it just right. How about a big box of candy? Many women try to convince their man that they don’t want all the extra calories from that huge heart-shaped box of chocolates, but I have yet to meet a woman who turned down a box of chocolates or truffles on Valentine’s Day. For couples at more serious stages of a relationship, jewelry (and the long-term commitment it suggests) might be a better bet. No matter what Cupid brings you this year, let me wish you a very happy Valentine’s Day, and a very happy February!

Vantage Point

Unity Chiropractic Body Balance for Chronic Relief By Jackie Byers

Chiropractor Dr. Danielle Clear suffered debilitating migraines that started when she was in fifth grade. A long list of treatments failed to ease her pain.“I could barely pay attention in school; I played sports but learned to push through the pain,”she recalls.“I could not have a life because I spent my time in bed in the dark.”Chiropractic treatment that ultimately ended the misery also set her on her career path. Dr. Danielle’s undergraduate studies in biology were at Ferris State in Michigan, where she grew up. She went on to graduate school at Palmer College of Chiropractic, where Dr. Danielle was introduced to NUCCA, a gentle treatment of the cranio-cervical junction that had strong scientific credentials. The NUCCA has had the best effect on her migraines. A second force also directed Dr. Danielle’s life—her beloved grandmother. “She taught me so much about how to live happily,” Dr. Danielle says. “Central to her teaching was her strong faith. It is my center, too. She taught me cooking, sewing, and needlework. These hobbies are still important parts of my life. Right now, I am perfecting my sourdough bread recipe. I find needlework, especially crocheting, to be relaxing.” Dr. Danielle also enjoys water sports and fitness activities with her husband, Jeff. “I love playing volleyball, basketball, and soccer,” she says. “I am making up for what I missed growing up with migraines.” NUCCA stands for National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association—it is the name of both the organization and the treatment. NUCCA treatments can lessen or eliminate many common disorders, including back pain, muscle spasms, asthma, sinusitis, and tinnitus—all conditions that unbalance the body. More than 50 afflictions caused by misalignment of the upper spine can be treated with NUCCA, which was designed by doctors. Early development began in the 1940s. Research on the alignment of the vertebrae in the upper spine is ongoing. Like chiropractic research, Dr. Danielle’s studies in NUCCA are also ongoing. “I attend clinics and conferences, gaining new insights about how this gentle, specific correction of the upper neck reduces pressure on the brain stem. The entire nervous system can function better with NUCCA treatment.” Dr. Danielle established Unity Chiropractic in Omaha shortly after graduating with honors from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. “NUCCA cured my migraines. As I studied it, I found that it offers beneficial treatments for many disorders.” Her clients’ treatment, however, does not begin and end with adjustments. “As part of my NUCCA treatment for migraines, I learned the value of a healthy lifestyle,” Dr. Danielle continues. “Nutrition, fitness, regular sleep, and a positive mental outlook matter!” She practices healthy living herself and encourages her clients to do the same, helping them learn how to achieve their healthy living goals. 18

February 2021

Dr. Danielle offers a free initial consultation, during which she looks for Dr. Danielle Clear visual signs of misalignment, like forward head posture, high or low hip or shoulder, or head tilt or twist. “Misalignment is often caused by severe trauma such as falls, whiplash, or concussion, but even minor trauma like sitting in one position for too much time (as we often do at a computer or at work) can result in the same type of misalignment,” she points out. During the consultation, she begins educating clients about the importance of healthy living. “A healthy body benefits more from treatment,” she explains, “relieving symptoms more quickly and making the effects of treatment last longer.” Treatment begins with detailed digital imaging of the upper cervical spine and head. “I focus on the atlas vertebra— the gateway between the brain and the rest of the body and a key to body balance.” A misaligned atlas can lead to many painful problems, including digestive problems, numbness, tingling tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, fatigue or disrupted sleep, and hip, knee, and leg pain. Though perhaps not constant, the symptoms do not go away and may worsen over time. The course of treatment is determined by the client’s particular misalignment, which Dr. Danielle calculates precisely. “Explaining the treatment and answering questions my client may have about it are important,” she says. “I find it keeps clients comfortable with the gentle corrections I will perform.” Unity Chiropractic has a growing base of satisfied clients. Dr. Danielle has an office in Elkhorn, now her hometown. She also travels regularly to Bellevue to treat clients. Those she cares for praise her as compassionate. Among the praise for her online is a response from the grateful parent of a very young client. “Whenever my son had a cough, he became extra fussy. I would give Dr. Danielle 55 stars if I could—five for my son’s treatment and 50 for my wife and I, who get to sleep through the night now.” Unity Chiropractic is inside 1315 North 205 in Elkhorn, in Suite B. You can reach Dr. Danielle at 402-557-0124 or drdanielleclear@gmail.com.

CDB Health Benefits Enhance Your Life in 2021! By Janette Calabro

In 2020, CBD escaped the confines of specialty shops and expanded into stores everywhere. If you want a CBD-infused toothpick after dinner, or honey mustard CBD potato chips with your sandwich at lunch, you can find them in plain sight from numerous websites, grocery stores, pharmacies, and dedicated CBD shops. One source states that the estimated CBD sales in the United States will surpass $20 billion by the end of 2024. With such a recent shift in consumer knowledge, many of us still need to learn more about the medical benefits of CBD oil and understand the difference between hemp and marijuana. Let’s see what all the intrigue is about. Information is power when it comes to understanding the nature of CBD. First of all, CBD stands for cannabidiol, a non-intoxicating compound found in cannabis plants. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is also found in cannabis plants—it is the psychoactive compound that produces the cannabis high. Hemp and marijuana are cousins, plants that both belong to the cannabis species. The key difference, as far as regulation and legality are concerned, is in the amount of THC they contain. The Farm Bill Act of 2018 differentiates hemp from other cannabis plants by defining it as containing no more than 0.3 percent of THC. CBD sourced from hemp, therefore, is now legal at the federal level. State laws still vary, but most provide for the sale and use of CBD if the plants are grown by licensed cultivators and are inspected by the state’s department of agriculture. CBD products sold over the counter are technically supplements, not drugs, so they are not regulated for safety and purity by the FDA. Meticulous about labels and claims, the FDA recommends carefully checking manufacturer websites before buying. Look for a certificate of analysis (COA) to show lab results, testing methods, and extraction processes. Be sure to read company reviews. The FDA is still creating a regulatory approach for CBD products, hoping to provide more clarity for the consumer. In the human body, CBD communicates with the body’s own endocannabinoid system, which helps regulate body functions like pain, immune response, and sleep. CBD has been studied for some time, and research continues to ramp up. CBD’s rise in popularity comes from the widespread, healthful substances extracted from hemp’s stalks, flowers, leaves, and roots. CBD is now found in numerous creams, oils, personal care items, foods, gummies, and a plethora of products you never thought you’d see. If you’re not comfortable buying CBD products online, head to a local CBD shop to talk to the experts. Store that focus exclusively on CBD products are generally also in the business of educating consumers about these products, so they’ll be happy to answer your questions about ingredients, product labels, and potential health benefits. Education rules when choosing your products, and the more you understand about CBD, the better. Oils are available as CBD isolate, which means that your product is in pure form. Full-spectrum CBD means that the phytochemicals from the cannabis plant occur naturally in the product. 20

February 2021

Full-spectrum may also contain trace amounts of THC. If you want to avoid THC entirely, look for broad-spectrum CBD. These products contain little to no THC because they have gone through an extra process to remove it. All forms boast great health benefits. CBD has grown so popular that the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports around 150,000 acres of hemp being grown in the United States (compared to zero acres in 2013). Commercial use is booming, and the future is promising. The World Health Organization reports that CBD is safe to use, although ongoing studies are examining potential adverse reactions such as dry mouth, sedation effects, and changes in appetite, especially for those who also take medication. Studies are ongoing for CBD’s ability to reduce cravings for addictions from nicotine to recreational drugs and even opioids. On the prescription drug side, the FDA has approved the use of Epidiolex, an oral drug containing CBD, for treatment of two rare forms of epilepsy. The bottom line is that hemp-derived CBD touts many health benefits without the psychoactive effects from THC, and the public is interested in how the organic, healthy benefits can enhance their lives. So, what can this fascinating plant do for you? One of the most popular products, CBD oil, is made from the leaves, stalks, and flowers of the hemp plant and is often used in beauty products for hair and skin. That’s one of the reasons that CBD oil is booming in popularity. Physicians have treated sleep disorders, anxiety, and chronic pain with oral tinctures and other methods. Commercial and specialty stores often carry CBD-infused drinks, chocolates, gummies, and baked goods to remedy everything from neuropathic pain to inflammation. CBD reacts with natural receptors like serotonin within your system—that explains why there is such a wide range of uses. There are numerous ways to ingest or apply CBD. Slather on a cream or oil to relieve sore muscles, or rub a balm, salve, or lotion onto the skin to reduce many types of inflammation. These topicals can relieve pain caused by arthritis, joint injury, nerve conditions, even headaches. Skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, sunburn, and bug bites may see benefits, too. The magic is that CBD interacts with receptors found under the epidermis. Some topical creams and lotions fight acne by limiting over-productive sebaceous glands. Sublingual application means you can apply CBD (usually as an oil tincture) directly under the tongue, using a dropper.

www.womensedition.com

Follow instructions, as some may indicate holding the oil under the tongue for 60–120 seconds before swallowing. This may allow for more precise dosing—effects may be felt faster and last longer. Studies done on oral supplements and tinctures support their short-term use for generalized and social anxiety, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Long-term use and dosage guidelines are still under study. Gummies are a convenient, fun, and portable choice for traveling to quell anxiety or stomachaches. One thing to watch out for is the fact that people can make edibles themselves, so they are not all created equal. Make sure the company that makes them provides proof of third-party CBD testing from an ISO 17025-compliant lab. Also look for U.S.-grown hemp and evidence that the product passed tests for pesticides, heavy metals, and molds. Again, the staff at a reputable store will be happy to answer your questions. As CBD has come into greater use, research on its health benefits has also been able to increase. Medical News Today published a study from Frontiers of Pharmacology that studied effects of CBD oil as a positive remedy for high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), arthritis, menstrual cramps, and acid reflux. The appropriate dosages of CBD products should be discussed with an expert, especially if you’ve never used any CBD products before. As with many supplements or even dietary changes, it’s best to start small and increase dose

and frequency over time. In general, CBD is safe for daily use. Some may prefer a mouth or nasal spray, supplement, tincture, or edible right before bedtime for better sleep. You’ll find a range of strengths, in addition to carrier oils and other ingredients to increase effectiveness, so always read the label carefully. A common recommendation is to start with 20 to 40 milligrams a day, adding another 5 milligrams every week until you experience relief, or symptoms are effectively treated, not to exceed 100–800 milligrams per day. Since FDA regulations of CBD products aren’t official (outside of the Epidiolex for seizures), you should check with your physician for appropriate dosages. As with any dietary supplement, it’s best to consult your doctor before starting to use CBD products. Variables such as your weight, medical conditions, and any medications you’re currently taking make a medical opinion invaluable. While CBD may ease everything from nausea to anxiety, definitive conclusions are still out. However, research is encouraging, and testimonials are inspiring. CBD exploration and other hemp derivatives are still up and coming, rising above the fray of lack of information. If you’re looking for a healthy lifestyle this year, consider CBD products for all kinds of health perks, then sit back and relax. Life is too short not to enjoy it. Time flies when you’re having fun. And sometimes time even flies when times are tough. It certainly seems true that “days are long but years are short.” Fifty-one years ago, on May 16, 1969, at 4:47 p.m., I met my husband. In actuality, he belonged to another girl, and I think he was quite smitten with her. What young man wouldn’t have fallen head over heels for her? She was glamorous and fun, but she was also fickle. I counted on that fickleness when he and I were introduced. If it’s possible to hear wedding bells at the first sight of one’s future husband, those bells were ringing loud and clear that day. I’ve asked him since if he heard wedding bells on that May afternoon long ago. “No, I didn’t hear any bells,” he has told me. While I was listening to those imaginary bells (which, by the way, really did ring a little over a year later), I waited. Then I waited some more. Eventually, the romance between my friend and my future husband lost its luster. Now please understand, I do not like comparing myself to a spider, but I have to admit that my behavior resembled just that. I waited some more. Eventually, my prey began to notice me. Aha! It was unbelievable that he would notice a plain old farm girl like me. I was not glamorous. I doubt if I was ever thought of as a barrel of fun. Being too tall and too thin and plain are not qualities that inspire most young men. Remarkably, this young man was drawn to my sense of independence. So, if beauty is indeed skin deep, maybe it’s what lies beneath that is most important in the long run. Eventually, I gave up my “spider ways” and just let nature take its course. Bear in mind that nature stepped in after much waiting. Just as I was about to forego the waiting, waiting, waiting…well, you can guess what happened. We began dating…just a little at first. Like most couples, we began to spend more time together. We found that we actually liked each other. Love does strange things to a person. Before long, I didn’t feel much like an ugly duckling. I didn’t feel like a beauty queen, but I did notice that my self-worth was much improved. Excuse me for kissing and telling, but this young man was the first man on earth to say to me, “I love you.” Did I like that? Yes, I did. I liked the sound and the feel of it. I knew in my heart that this guy was “the one.” Everyone loves love, and everyone loves falling in love. It’s the staying in love that can be tricky. Had I known then what I know now, would I have married this young man? You bet I would have. But there is no way to tell a 19-year-old girl that her life will go down some slippery slopes and that there will be detours and roadblocks along the way. A woman that young cannot fathom that there will be events so profound that life will never be the same again. How can you tell a young girl in love that there will be challenges so great in life that even her faith will be tested? Who would want to tell her?

Fifty-one years is a long time. Fifty-one years loving the same person is a long time, too, but that time is tempered by the faith we have in each other. Like everyone else, there have been days I wished I wasn’t married, and I’m sure there were at least as many days that my sweetheart wished he had been elsewhere on May 16, 1969. All in all, it’s been a pretty good run. By the time we marched down the aisle (on the hottest day of the year, in a church with no airconditioning), a few realities were becoming apparent. Suddenly it dawned on me that I would be with this fellow for the rest of my life. Naturally, worry set in. What if I ran out of things to talk about? He should be so lucky! What if he wanted me to cook a real meal? We were pretty hungry for the first year or two while I learned to cook a few basic meals. Would I be expected to balance a checkbook? Luckily, he’s a math whiz and balances anyone’s checkbook at the drop of a hat! What if he had hoodwinked me and he wasn’t the wonderful person I thought he was? There was nothing to worry about. He has become a stellar husband—better than I deserve. Through the years, there have been ups and downs, but thankfully, there have been more ups than down times. Amazingly ,through it all, I’ve never wished to return to the halcyon days of young love. It was fun and exciting, but I like this version of love. Young love always wants more, but mature love appreciates what is. Is there passion for people our age? Of course there is, but there’s also mutual respect and the knowledge of each other. That is what life seems to be about. Eventually, passion calms down. Married life takes on a more sensible pace with its own reassuring rhythm. The passion known by younger couples is replaced by a sense of knowing the other person almost better than you know yourself. Maybe the knowing and the understanding of your mate and the relationship you share is the best part of marriage. After all this time, he’s still the one. The band Orleans wrote a song called “Still the One.” If you get a chance to listen to it, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Bustline Bottom Line Breast Reduction and Augmentation

By Loretta McCollum

Every year, hundreds of thousands of women in the United States choose to have plastic surgery on their breasts. Whether it’s for breast augmentation or breast reduction, it’s important to get the facts. You should become familiar with the various procedures, the risks involved, recovery times, and what results to expect. Select a board-certified plastic surgeon who is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and is licensed to practice in your state. Your pre-surgery consultation is the time to ask any questions you may have, including the surgeon’s experience in performing the procedure, whether you are a good candidate for surgery, possible complications and how they will be handled, and what the recovery period looks like. Ask for before and after pictures of previous patients who have undergone the procedure you’re considering. During the consultation, the surgeon should ask about your medical history, current medications, overall health, and desired results from surgery. Breast augmentation, or augmentation mammoplasty, is the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery in the United States. It enhances the size and shape of the breasts. Women choose this surgery to increase breast dimensions, to correct uneven breasts, or to decrease age-related sagging and volume loss (or any combination of these reasons). The procedure may involve breast implants, breast fat transfer, or a breast lift.

NEW PROGRAM

Breast implants contain either saline or silicone. Saline implants contain sterile salt water. Should a leak occur, the saline is absorbed and then naturally expelled by the body. This type of implant provides uniform shape and firmness. Structured saline implants contain an inner shell, making the implant feel more natural. Silicone implants are filled with silicone gel, which feels more like natural breast tissue. Implants are available in a multitude of shapes and dimensions. Your surgeon will help you select the right implants for your needs. Surgery may be performed in a surgical center or hospital outpatient facility. An overnight hospital stay is rarely required. The procedure typically involves general anesthesia, but local anesthesia is sometimes used. To minimize scarring, the surgeon makes the incision in an inconspicuous area, such as the armpit or the fold under the breast. The implant is then inserted either under the pectoral muscle or directly behind the breast tissue. The method for inserting and positioning the implant depends upon the type of implant and the patient’s body type. Saline implants are inserted

empty and then filled. Silicone implants are pre-filled. A breast fat transfer augmentation involves liposuction to remove excess fat from one area of the patient’s body, typically the stomach or thighs, and then injecting it into the breasts. A benefit to this procedure is that your own tissue, not a foreign object, provides the volume. A simple breast lift can elevate saggy breasts and reposition the nipples for a perkier appearance. This procedure is often selected to turn back the clock on aging breasts and is sometimes combined with implants. Some post-surgery soreness, swelling, and bruising is common during the first few weeks. Your surgeon may want you to wear a compression bandage or sports bra to provide extra support. Strenuous activity should be avoided for at least two weeks. Follow the surgeon’s instructions carefully for a return to normal activities. On the other side of the spectrum is breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammaplasty. This procedure removes excess fat and skin from the breasts. Women choose this surgery for both medical and psychological reasons. Having overly large breasts may cause chronic back and neck pain, nerve pain, and emotional distress, especially in young adults. Breast reduction can also make it easier to participate in physical activities. The surgical technique for breast reduction surgery depends on the breast composition and the amount of reduction desired. Like breast augmentation, this procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia in a hospital or outpatient facility. The surgeon makes incisions around the areola and on the side of the breasts. Excess fat and tissue are removed, surgically or with liposuction. The breast is then reshaped, and the nipple and areola are repositioned for a natural, uniform look. The incision lines are permanent but will fade over time. Results from breast reduction are immediately visible, but a full recovery takes time. Breasts will likely be swollen, bruised, and tender for several weeks. The surgeon may recommend a compression bra to protect the incisions. Physical activity should be limited for the first few weeks. Results are permanent, but breast shape and size may change over time due to aging or weight fluctuation. Whether you’re seeking breast augmentation or reduction, it’s important that you have all the facts, select a qualified surgeon, and make sure that you have realistic expectations. Counter Intelligence The Best Surfaces for Your Home

By Robyn V. Powell

With 2020 behind us, we’re all looking for a fresh start. One opportunity for homeowners is updating countertops. Even if a total kitchen or bathroom remodel isn’t in your plans, updating countertops is a great way to breathe new life into those spaces. Like many home products, countertops continue to evolve, bringing ever more options to choose from. To find the best surface for your home, it’s important to consider your style preferences, your home’s aesthetic, and your family’s lifestyle and budget. In the modern home, the kitchen is often the hub of activity, and the counter is where the action is. Whether it’s meal preparation or a homework station, this surface serves as the reliable platform for many of life’s tasks. Countertops are expected to stand up to the assaults of daily meal preparation, repel food splatters— and look good while doing so! Countertops set the stage for the visual and functional foundation in the hardest working rooms in the home. When it comes time to replace them, you want to make the right decision. One of the most important considerations when choosing countertops is deciding between natural stone or a manufactured material. According to the 2020 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study, engineered quartz continues to make rapid market gains; it’s the material of choice for 51 percent of new countertops, surpassing all natural stones combined, including granite. As homeowners em-

brace more neutral palettes, heavily veined granite has lost ground. That said, granite is still a beautiful and durable natural stone option that won’t stain, burn, or scratch. It is porous and can absorb moisture like water and oil, so it should be sealed every year. Low-maintenance quartz doesn’t require sealant and is impervious to staining. Choosing natural stones does require more legwork, including a visit to a yard to view slabs. Because it’s quarried, each slab of natural stone is unique. Once you find one you like, that particular slab is tagged for you and will be installed in your home. Engineered stone is manufactured with consistent patterning and color, enabling you to make your selection from a showroom sample but still know exactly what you’re getting. Because engineered stone is very durable and does not require sealing, it’s a great choice for high traffic areas.

For ultimate luxury and elegance, nothing surpasses the beauty of natural marble. This timeless stone comes in a variety of lovely tones, ranging from soft grays, beige, white, and black. It can have a high price tag, but the more common Carrara marble is friendlier on the wallet. Marble is soft and is subject to staining and etching, so it needs to be sealed and cleaned gently. For high traffic areas such as a game room or bar, marble may not be the best choice. Natural soapstone is on trend, as it has a gray, honed finish (not the high gloss of granite). Soapstone is fairly soft, and the surface can scratch—however, many people consider this a desirable feature, as it adds an element of natural character to the countertop. Concrete is now considered by many as the ultimate countertop material. Warmer than natural stone, concrete countertops really make a statement! Once associated only with industrial styles, concrete can now be colored or acid-stained any shade imaginable, making it a great fit for traditional and contemporary styles, as well. Customized installation makes it possible to incorporate integrated sinks, drain boards, or cutting boards. The porous surface does require sealing to avoid staining and etching. Other leading trends include the emergence of the full-wall backsplash. Homeowners are installing the backsplash all the way to the upper cabinets or range hood or even the ceiling! They’re investing in high quality products and finishes. For example, homeowners may choose quartz for perimeter countertops and opt for high-end marble or quartzite for beauty and drama on the kitchen island. In recent years, the kitchen island has become the crown jewel of many kitchens. A waterfall island, where the countertop flows from the top of the island to the floor, creates a stunning focal point. If you’re in the market for new countertops, begin by meeting with a kitchen specialist or interior designer to discuss countertop materials, colors, and designs. The professionals you choose to fabricate and install your new countertops will be the single most important decision you’ll make in the process. Find out if the fabricator does all the work or uses subcontractors. Ask for references, and only hire a licensed and insured installer. Make sure you get the quality you deserve this year! To Your Good Health

Eye Care is Self-Care! Don’t Neglect Your Eyes

By Leslie Byrne

Perfect vision is 20/20, but 2021 is the year to give your eyes the love they deserve! During 2020, many people put health first by staying home as much as possible. While this was wise, it also led to a lot of skipped medical and dental appointments and a general lack of preventative care. In 2021, let’s put our health first by making it the year of self-care. If you or your family missed your eye appointments in 2020 because of COVID-19, or you have not had your vision checked in a while, it’s time to schedule an eye exam. Four out of 10 Americans don’t know what needs to be done to take care of their eyes, and about 50 percent of millennials don’t think they need an eye exam if they have clear vision. Even with no obvious vision problems, everyone’s vision changes over time and should be monitored. More than 16 million Americans deal with undiagnosed or untreated vision impairments that could have been identified during an eye exam with an eye care professional. Not sure where to start? Begin with an appointment with an optometrist. An optometrist is a professional who cares for vision and eyes. Optometrists first earn a bachelor’s degree, often in a field of science. Then, they must pass an exam and be accepted to optometry school, where they complete a fouryear program to earn a Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree. For comparison, an ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who can

You have a

choice

treat all manner of eye diseases, including performing eye surgery. Optometrists conduct comprehensive eye exams that can tell if someone needs glasses or contacts to correct impaired vision. They can also diagnose, treat, and manage several eye diseases and disorders. A full eye exam can also diagnose serious eye and health issues such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes, hypertension, and even sexually transmitted infections and brain tumors. Another reason to see an optometrist is if your job or a favorite sport requires special eye protection devices or solutions. Optometrists also prescribe medications and vision therapy. If your condition requires the more invasive services of an ophthalmologist, your optometrist will let you know. Although many insurance plans allow for an annual eye

exam, not everyone needs to be examined every year. How frequently you need an eye exam depends on your age, your health conditions, and your risk of developing eye problems. Younger adults (in their 20s and 30s) with no eye symptoms or vision problems can go five to 10 years between eye exams. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, have a family history of eye disease or loss of vision, or have a chronic disease like diabetes that puts you at greater risk for eye problems, you should schedule an annual exam. Talk to your optometrist about how often you need to visit for optimum eye health. Children also have eye health needs. Like adults, their need for professional eye care varies based on their age and their current eye health. Children younger than three years should be seen if they have eye or vision problems such as a lazy eye, crossed eyes, or misaligned eyes. Parents can opt to make an appointment with a pediatric optometrist, who treats only children and can handle the unique needs of having a child as a patient. Children without eye health concerns can wait until about age six or seven years to see an optometrist. After that, their vision should be checked every other year. The most common complaint—maybe the only one—about an eye exam is eye dilation. That is when a drop is added to each eye, causing the pupils to widen. This allows more light into the eye, making it easier for the doctor to see the whole eye and diagnose diseases in their early stages. Don’t let an aversion to dilation stop you from getting the eye care you need! Depending on your age and eye health, dilation may not be required at every appointment. Talk to your optometrist. Like so many other areas of medical care, there are always advancements happening in eye care. For example, digital retinal imaging is a technology that allows an eye doctor to study the health of the back of your eye and the retina. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is used for the early detection and treatment of several conditions, including glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. It uses light waves to take cross-section pictures in a non-invasive way and produces high-quality images of the retina. If the year 2021 is going to be your year of self-care, don’t forget that it should include your eyes! Sources for this article included: aoa.org, mayoclinic.org, and opticianedu.org. Best Friends If You Don’t Lift Them Up, You’ve Let Them Down Do you have a best friend? That person you know

By Janet Van deWalle

you can call at all hours of the night if you need help? That person who is always there for you, not only to cheer you on, but to help you see yourself when you really don’t want to?

Over the years, I have discovered that when I jumped right into the mud and “helped” my friends sling more of it, I felt pretty lousy an hour or so later. Honestly? I don’t think my friends felt any better, either!

“In life, we never lose friends, we only learn who the true ones are.” —Anonymous

“Only surround yourself with people who will lift you higher.” —Oprah Winfrey

Being a great friend is not always easy. I think most of us have been trained to simply be a sounding board for those people in our lives who we call “friends.”We are there to commiserate. We are there to jump in and help stir the pot when friends are angry or upset with their mother, father, boss, spouse, children, other friends.

I’m not lifting up my friends when I come down on anyone in their lives. I’m not lifting up my friends when I turn a blind eye to the negativity of that which I am bestowing on them. I’m not lifting up my friends when I’m simply there to commiserate…to lift them up, I need to help them solve problems.

“Sometimes, God removes people from our lives to protect us. Accept it. Don’t go running after them.” —Anonymous

“When I first met you, I didn’t know you were going to be this important to me.” —Anonymous

When I was a lot younger, that is the kind of friend I was. I was constantly ignoring my inner being when I heard a friend being unjust, unkind, or simply rude. I would jump right in and bash with the best of them. Did it make my friend feel better? Definitely… temporarily. Did it help? I don’t think so. I wasn’t doing my friend any favors. “The pleasure we derive is partly in the feeling it gives us that we are not altogether worthless. It’s a pleasant surprise to ourselves.” —Eric Hoffer

Take a moment to think about your friends. Are they simply sounding boards for your complaints, or do they help you grow? Help you learn? Help you change? Now, that’s a real friend! “Don’t make friends who are comfortable to be with. Make friends who will force you to lever yourself up.” —Thomas J. Watson

This column is dedicated to my husband, Manny Chavez, who is my best friend.

Kid’s Comments

Making Life Meaningful Let Kids Find Their Own Path One of my college professors once advised the class to “find what fulfills your inner soul and make even small things and deeds meaningful.” He made me rethink what I was expecting of my kids. I love my kids. I want the best for them. I’m ready to do everything I can to make life as easy as possible…no struggles, no hardships. If we take care of all the problems our kids face, does that make us good parents? Are we really helping them? Bob, a frustrated college athlete, wanted to give his son an advantage and enrolled him in every sports clinic he could find. Bob did the same for his daughter by offering every “girl” activity available. Finally, Bobby told his dad he’d rather be an artist than an athlete, and Barbara admitted she wanted to play ball. Bob realized he was trying to relive his life through his kids and decided to let them make their own choices. Bobby used his artistic talents to get a job in design; Barbara became a successful personal trainer. I think we do our kids a disservice when we present them with everything they want. We deny them the chance to learn how to handle problems or face adversity and disappointment. Janie didn’t mind keeping her son shod until John

wanted a really expensive, brand-name pair of sports shoes. They made a deal—she would pay half the cost (about what she’d pay for a less popular brand) if he would pay the rest. It didn’t take John long to figure how many lawns he’d have to mow…and he promptly decided he didn’t need the expensive shoes, after all. In some families, the kids are expected to follow in their parents’ footsteps. Ed owned a successful business. By calling on the kids to help, he hoped they would learn to love the business and carry on after his retirement…maybe even pass it down to his grandkids. The kids tried but soon discovered the business just didn’t match their talents or interests. They finally convinced Ed to sell it. “It’s just not what we or the grandkids want to do,” they explained. Kids have their own talents and needs. They have their own ideas about what they want…and they’ll tell you all about it, if you ask! Encourage them to try different things. Let them know they have your love and support. Even when they seem lost, they are seeking satisfaction and looking for their niche in life. It may take a while for them to find it, but they’ll be happier in the long run and life will be more meaningful. Remember, kids are people, too.

Totally Vein Omaha’s Vein Treatment Choice By Angella A. Arndt

Do you have leg pain or swelling? Do your legs feel heavy or tired? Do you have varicose veins? If so, the valves that keep blood flowing between your heart and your legs may have become damaged, a condition known as superficial venous reflux disease. Fortunately, treatment is available to help you overcome these symptoms. Totally Vein, Nebraska’s first surgical practice devoted exclusively to diagnosing and treating venous problems in the legs, has been helping patients for 15 years. Dr. Stephen Torpy founded Totally Vein in 2005. An Omaha native, Dr. Torpy earned his medical degree at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and completed his surgical training at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Torpy returned to Omaha in 1979 to practice general and vascular surgery. He was the first surgeon in the Omaha metro area to specialize exclusively in vein disease. Dr. Torpy is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Diplomate of the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine. Dr. Robert Zadalis, also an Omaha native, graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1992 and com-

pleted his general surgery residency there in 1997. He Dr. Robert Zadalis was an Assistant Professor of Surgery at UNMC before going into private practice in Omaha. Dr. Zadalis is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Diplomate of the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine. He knew during high school that he wanted a career in medicine. “I enjoyed the sciences and helping people. It seemed like a good fit,” he recalls. “I was attracted to surgery because I could

provide patients with immediate results.” Dr. Zadalis joined Dr. Torpy in 2018. “Dr. Torpy and I had previously worked together,” he says. “In 2018, I spent time in his medical practice. His patients experienced dramatic results in appearance and feeling with minimal complications and improved quality of life. I joined his team and now focus exclusively on evaluating and treating venous disorders.” According to Dr. Zadalis, 25 percent of the population and 50 percent of those older than 50 years have venous disease. When blood flow in the legs is obstructed, blood can pool, causing pain, swelling, fatigue, and leg heaviness. Individuals may also experience itching, burning, skin changes, ulcers, cramps, and varicose or spider veins. Insufficient blood flow negatively impacts a person’s functionality and quality of life. “People don’t need to live in pain or discomfort,” Dr. Zadalis asserts. “Minimally invasive treatments can improve their quality of life.” During your initial office visit, the Totally Vein team conducts a comprehensive evaluation of your vein problems, including diagnostic tests such as a duplex ultrasound (if indicated). “Our job is to fully diagnose problems and explain treatment options so patients can make informed decisions,” explains Dr. Zadalis. “We perform treatments to the best of our abilities for the patient’s benefit.”The most significant advances in treatment options include new procedures that are less invasive and are performed in an outpatient setting. A common diagnosis is varicose veins, which are enlarged veins caused by increased blood pressure. Multiple treatment options can get you back up to speed in as little as a day.

Aislinn.indd 1

VenaSeal ablation, the newest option for treating certain vein problems, involves injecting a medical-grade adhesive into a damaged vein, sealing it off, and diverting blood flow into healthy veins. Venefit is a minimally invasive procedure used to eliminate varicose veins. Ambulatory phlebectomy removes varicose veins through a series of tiny incisions, rarely requiring stitches, and has virtually non-existent scarring. Spider veins are small, damaged veins that look like thin lines or webs. Sclerotherapy is the most common treatment for spider veins. An FDA-approved medicine is injected into abnormal veins, which causes the vein walls to stick together while blood is redirected to deeper veins. Veinwave is a high-frequency energy technique used to treat fine red spider veins, most notably on the face. When choosing a physician for treatment, Dr. Zadalis recommends asking several questions to evaluate the experience and training of those from whom you are seeking treatment. Are the physicians board-certified? What services do they offer? Do they take time to listen and answer all of your questions? How are your interactions with the support staff? It’s essential that you feel confident and comfortable with your entire care team. “Our practice has been doing this for 15 years,” Dr. Zadalis concludes. “We have excellent staff and extensive experience. It’s rewarding to treat patients and see their satisfaction with their results and their improved quality of life after treatment.” Totally Vein is located at 17001 Lakeside Hills Plaza, Suite 102, in Omaha. Burger, Fries, and a Coke? Exponential Menu Overgrowth

By George Morgan

When I was a kid, fast food menus were short and sweet: burger, fries, and a coke. Once in a while, you might run into an outlier that offered a milkshake. In those days, a similarly short list of choices applied to investors. If you wanted to invest, you went to the office of a Wall Street broker, who told you what stock to buy and when to sell it. No internet trading, no index funds, and the government regulators set the commission. You had no other choices. Well, that was then, and this is now. I recently checked the menu of a major fast food chain, and they had 19 variations of hamburgers, six different types of fries and onion rings, and 37 brands of soft drinks. The same menu expansion has occurred in the investment world. We now have full service brokers, wealth managers, financial planners, robo-advisors, discount brokers, online investing, mutual funds, index funds, hedge funds, exchange-traded funds, and free trading with no account minimums. There are also a few thousand ways to combine any of the above into a personalized solution. The expanded menu of investment choices is the good news…and also the bad news. Some people are born shoppers and head straight to the burger they want. Others take days deciding what to have for lunch. The same applies to today’s investors. Some investors gravitate immediately to an investment approach. For so many others, the expanded menu makes their search for an investment solution a painful and arduous one. The $64,000 question is: How do you decide which investment program works for you? The process begins with identifying your personal situation and outlining what you expect from your investments. Issues such as your age, the size of your account, your level of investment experience, and even your level of interest in investing all enter the equation. Warren Buffett’s mentor, Ben Graham, divided investors into several categories and named the investment approach he felt most appropriate for each category. On one end of the investor involvement spectrum were conservative types he called “defensive” investors. Investors in this category wanted to have things done for them and were willing to accept a lower payout in return for reduced risk. In the middle of the investor spectrum were the “intelligent” investors, who were willing to take on greater risk, focus on the long term, and utilize the assistance of an investment professional. The third group contained the “enterprising” investors. These were investors who devoted more of their time and personal involvement to their portfolios. They were more active in the buying and selling efforts than their counterparts. Taking these classifications and fast-forwarding to today, we can update the products and services available from the financial services industry and match them with each investor type. Let’s begin with the defensive investors. Their decision-making process is simple: Contact a 42

February 2021

broker, have the broker choose a robo-mix of stock and bond mutual funds, and then sit back and focus on the things that matter most to them. The intelligent investors might take a similar approach, with the addition that they would be involved not only in the broker selection but also in the composition of the robo-portfolio. They might want a mix of index and sector funds and might reduce or eliminate altogether the bond funds from the portfolio. The approach taken by enterprising investors would be the extreme opposite of the defensive investors. They might open an account at a discount broker with no designated broker. Then, they could choose a robo-advisor format that they control, or they could simply use the brokerage firm’s online research services to construct a portfolio of index and sector funds. They would then buy and sell their index funds in response to the ups and downs of the market. The most extreme investor in this category might choose to utilize one of the active individual stock trading programs offered by all the major discount brokerage firms. Today’s investors have the ability to build a customized investment package that fits their finances and personality. There is no “one size fits all” in investing—neither is one approach sacred and another heathen. The most important thing is that investors feel comfortable with the plans they choose. Remember that entering a program does not mean that you are locked into it for a lifetime! Like all parts of your financial situation, it’s important to monitor your investment plan and modify it as your situation changes. It’s also important to keep an eye on the financial services industry as it develops new and innovative products and services. It may be the industry’s situation that changes instead of yours! Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. To determine which investments may be appropriate for you, consult your financial advisor prior to investing.

Destination Weddings and Honeymoons Planning an Experience You’ll Cherish By Angella A. Arndt

Are you thinking of heading way out of town for your wedding or honeymoon? There are so many destination options! Start by considering your interests as a couple. What do you like to do? If you love the water, a tropical location may be calling your name. If you’re into art and culture, a historic location might be ideal. No matter what you love, choose an amazing location where you can celebrate with the people you love. Here are some ideas to tempt you! Santorini, Greece. If you’ve dreamed of getting married in an idyllic setting, Santorini fits the bill. Famously known for its architecture of white-washed villages built high atop cliffs, this Greek island has it all—beautiful beaches, spectacular sunsets, ancient history, fabulous food and wine, and a world-famous volcano. Visit the black sand beaches, take part in watersports, explore the island’s natural beauty with a hike, and experience the excellent regional cuisine and wines. Some resorts offer wedding packages and have wedding planners to assist you. There are also venues designed specifically for wedding ceremonies. Tuscany, Italy. If you’re looking for a romantic setting, Tuscany is your place. Rolling hills, vineyards, olive groves, and beautiful sunsets provide the perfect backdrop. This region of Italy is known as the birthplace of the Renaissance and includes Florence, Siena, and Pisa. You can immerse yourself in the works of artists like Michelangelo, Botticelli, and Leonardo da Vinci at one of the many museums and art galleries. For foodies and wine enthusiasts, Tuscany is also known for its Chianti wines, olive oils, and excellent cuisine. Montego Bay, Jamaica. If you desire a Caribbean destination with a laid-back atmosphere, try Montego Bay. You’ll enjoy white sandy beaches and lots of sunshine, and there are lots of activities for anyone in an adventurous mood. Try tubing down a river, ziplining, river rafting, or an ATV tour. Montego Bay also has a bustling nightlife. Of course, you should try the jerk cuisine and world-famous Jamaican rum. Islamorada, Florida. If you want an island setting but don’t want to leave the country, Islamorada is a great option. Islamorada, or Village of Islands, is located in the Florida Keys. You’ll enjoy white sandy beaches, splendid sunsets, nature, and sea life. Revel in activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, eco-adventure tours, and hiking. Islamorada is also known as the Sport Fishing Capital of the World. Cancun, Mexico. For a truly tropical location with all the comforts of home, an all-inclusive resort in Cancun is worth a look. Shimmering white sand, clear water, tropical climate, and

affordability make this a popular destination. Explore Mayan civilization at one of the ruins, engage in water sports, swim with dolphins, or take an ATV tour. All-inclusive resorts provide wedding planning services that typically include the venue, accommodations, and food. Once you’ve chosen the location, check in with your local travel agent. Travel agents are invaluable members of the destination wedding planning team. They have industry connections and have probably traveled to your chosen destination…they may even have arranged a destination wedding there before! An agent will help you find the perfect hotel or resort for your wedding vision. They’ll assist you with group contracts and will know about specials and perks. Travel agents are familiar with travel requirements and documents. Your guests will appreciate working with an agent who is familiar with your plans and who can help them negotiate the travel process. A destination wedding is exciting, but it takes a little extra planning. Get started at least nine to 12 months in advance to ensure availability. It’s essential to establish a budget to avoid overspending. If possible, visit the location you’ve chosen to ensure it matches your vision and can accommodate your guests. Think about the climate when selecting attire and hairstyles for your wedding party. Send out save-the-date cards at least six months in advance so guests can plan their travel, and be sure to refer them to your travel agent. Mail formal invitations three months before the wedding. Arrive a few days early to review details with the wedding planner. Schedule a trial hair and makeup appointment so you know what to expect on your wedding day. Good travel agents can do a lot to simplify the destination wedding and honeymoon planning process. You’ll benefit from their expertise and guidance. Several resorts offer wedding planning services. This significant milestone in your life is sure to be a treasured experience. Flowers for Love! Send the Right Message

By Linda Sutherland

People were arranging flowers in ancient Egypt, and the symbolism of flowers is still enthusiastically celebrated today. Valentine’s Day and flowers are forever linked and have joyfully resonated delight with friends and lovers for centuries. When it comes to flowers, you can choose certain blooms to convey the message you want to send. According to scientists, there are over 270,000 documented species of flowers (give or take a few hundred.) As Valentine’s Day fast approaches, let us examine the meanings of some of those beloved flowers to ensure that your floral gift makes the right impression upon your recipient. In Victorian times, learning the special symbolism of different types of flowers became a popular pastime—so popular that many people had an actual guidebook for deciphering this “language.”The strict etiquette of that era often did not allow the open acknowledgment of passionate emotions, and flowers were widely used as a vehicle to deliver messages that could not be spoken aloud. Even though we now perhaps express our feelings more openly, the tradition of “speaking” through flowers has not died out. The fragrant and impressive lavender, with its calming aromatherapy qualities, stands for devotion and is believed to reduce anxiety and stress. A bouquet featuring lavender sends a message of calm and wellness. Consider lavender when you are sending flowers to an anxious or restless friend. Everyone loves the positivity that perky sunflowers provide.

There exists a legend that when Spanish explorers reached the Americas and came upon sunflowers, they thought they were made of real gold! Although that sounds like a stretch, these beautiful, sunny flowers do symbolize loyalty and longevity and are the perfect gift to bring joy and happiness to someone special. Speaking of happy flowers, the classic daisy is a sure thing for brightening up a bouquet—or a garden. Their sunny faces symbolize innocence and purity. In fact, daisies were traditionally given to new mothers to congratulate them on the new life they had brought into the world. Another gorgeous flower in the same family with daisies is the chrysanthemum. This “Queen of Fall Flowers” is the official birth flower of November and has come to have many meanings. Based on its color, it can send a message of love, condolence, celebration, even

passion. Be sure to send the color that matches your sentiment! When it comes to strong sentiment, nothing beats the power of the rose. A bouquet of roses is sure to get the attention of any recipient. This is another flower that ascribes different meanings to different colors. For example, yellow indicates friendship; red means love and passion; white brings to mind innocence and youth; and pink sends a message of admiration. You may not know that roses also have different meanings depending upon their number! One rose stands for love at first sight. A pair of red roses shows mutual love and affection. A gift of three roses is a traditional one-month anniversary bouquet. Ten roses tells the recipient that their love is perfection. Of course, the traditional dozen says, “Be mine.” If you really want to go over the top, 50 roses express love that has no bounds! (It never hurts to add a box of gourmet chocolates to make your intentions crystal clear.) The sweet, heady fragrance of lilacs is not to be replicated and can seem to take up a lot of space. American folklore claims that lilacs could drive away evil and that placing them in a haunted house would make ghosts vacate the premises. Russian folklore says that hanging lilacs above a baby’s bed would bring the child wisdom—perhaps because wisdom comes with age. After all, lilac bushes can live to be 100 years old. Purple lilacs also symbolize love and passion. Talk about a flower that covers all the bases! The name of the delicate and charming forget-me-not says it all: Do not forget me! White jasmine is a very fragrant beauty that intoxicates with its message of sweet love. If you really want to compliment someone, send a bouquet with irises. These royal blooms stand for wisdom and respect, and their luxurious petals look opulent and sumptuous in any floral arrangement. As you can see, flowers play such a significant role in our lives that they have a language all their own (“floriography” is its official name). As interpersonal communication goes, flowers can express so many varied feelings of love, wishes, hopes, and affections. Nature has been providing us with this unique form of communication for centuries. I, for one, think it is time to usher this tradition back to the fore. Grab your flower dictionary and get thee to a florist!

Mental Health in Seniors Issues and Solutions

By Linda Barnes

Good mental health is as crucial to well-being as good physical health. Untreated mental health issues can result in diminished functioning, substance abuse, physical illness, and a rise in mortality, especially in older people. Mental problems are not a normal part of aging, but the risk may increase for a variety of reasons. It is estimated that as many as one in five seniors experience mental health concerns. The many changes that seniors typically deal with can negatively affect mental health. Stress and anxiety can result from everything from physical changes and retirement to changing relationships with friends and family. Medications may have undesirable interactions or side effects that alter mood or behavior. Anxiety, depression, and substance abuse are some of the common mental health issues that can occur with aging. Unfortunately, these issues often go unaddressed due to denial or misdiagnosis, so many people don’t receive the services they need. Suicide is a known complication of depression, and it is a significant risk to older adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 18 percent of the suicides in the United States are people aged 65 years and older. Thankfully, seniors who are treated with therapy and medication can recover from depression just as well as younger people. Family members may have difficulty distinguishing between serious depression and the normal sadness that results from loss. Older adults are often unwilling to talk with younger family

46 AARP Stay Connected - quarter.indd 1

February 2021

members about how they are feeling. Symptoms such as fatigue, sleep issues, or irritability may not be obviously attributed to depression. Confusion or attention problems may be blamed on normal aging or dementia. The National Institute on Aging suggests that some of the following symptoms may be warnings of depression: persistent sadness or anxiety, hopelessness, unusual irritability, difficulty concentrating, and memory problems. Sleep disturbances, overeating, loss of interest in activities, and frequent crying are also warning signs if they go on for more than two weeks. It is important to get professional help—the sooner, the better. A primary care physician can determine whether symptoms are due to a physical health issue or if they may be the result of medication interactions or side effects. If a doctor visit with lab tests and physical exam rules out those possibilities, then a psychological evaluation is in order. Therapy and medication are highly effective in treating depression. Psychotherapy, sometimes called “talk therapy,” helps many

people. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a specific form of psychotherapy that focuses on changing negative thinking. Behaviors that contribute to depression are addressed, as well. Medications such as anti-depressants are often used in combination with therapy. It may be necessary to try different types to get the best result, and it may take a few weeks to see improvement. It’s critical to work closely with one’s doctor and not stop a medication abruptly. A doctor can oversee a slow, safe tapering off, if necessary. Chronic anxiety is another common mental health issue among seniors. This doesn’t have to be a specific phobia—it can manifest as a generalized feeling of worry over almost everything. Besides making it difficult to function in day-to-day activities, anxiety can cause physical health problems. Sleep issues, gastrointestinal upsets, breathing problems, back pain, and cardiovascular issues are examples. Fortunately, anxiety is also highly treatable in people of all ages. A combination of therapy and medication is usually quite effective. A reputable psychiatrist, psychologist, or social worker can provide expert help. Cognitive behavior therapy is useful with anxiety. Anti-anxiety drugs may be prescribed, though anti-depressants may be tolerated better by aging adults. Other strategies help, too. Avoiding isolation is important. Getting together with friends and family is a great boost, whether you can do it in person or from a distance. Joining a group for cards, crafts, or other activities also helps. Exercise has great benefits—and if you do it with others, it provides social interaction, as well. Fitness centers plan senior-centered programs like strength training, water aerobics, yoga, or spinning. Regular exercise improves circulation for optimum brain function. If you’re not ready to jump into group classes, find a personal trainer who has experience working with seniors. Human interaction, goal setting, and seeing improvement are good for mental health. Other strategies for staying mentally healthy include learning new skills, being of service to others, and making dietary improvements. A dietician can help devise a healthy menu. Senior living centers place considerable focus on these very strategies because they know that physical fitness, healthful diet, intellectual challenges, and social interaction are vital to mental health. If you or loved ones are showing signs of chronic anxiety, depression, or substance abuse, talk to a physician and get back on the road to enjoying life again. Peak Performance

Straight From the Heart Cardiac Health for Women

By Maria Harding

February is American Heart Month. Since our hearts do their work without conscious effort from us, we don’t give them a lot of thought until we are faced with a doctor’s warning or a traumatic health episode. That’s when we realize that our hearts really do need our help to function properly. Heart disease, which includes such medical conditions as coronary artery disease and heart attacks, affects women as much as men. In fact, it is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, accounting for one out of every five female deaths. Though heart disease can affect people in their 20s and 30s, most heart attacks strike women older than 50 years. Warning signs of heart disease in women include pain or heaviness in the chest, upper abdomen, or back, as well as radiating pain in the neck, jaw, or arms. Watch for other warning signs too, like dizziness, nausea, fatigue, or swelling of the extremities. Ideally, at any age, we should always behave as if our hearts were at immediate risk. With this attitude, we can preventively give our hearts and our bodies the best chance for longevity and optimum function. Take advantage of the many resources available to you in the community. Your future self will thank you for putting good habits in place right now. We have all heard and read that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and heart-healthy oils can stave off a variety

50 Arthritis Foundation - half.indd 1February 2021

of illnesses. We already know how to improve our diet…so why aren’t we making good choices at every meal? The most common mistake is trying to change too much, too fast. Success is most enduring when shifts in our eating habits happen gradually and mindfully. A dietician can be a valuable resource for suggesting small changes and definable mini-goals. Dieticians may suggest subtle substitutes such as crispbread instead of crackers or salsa instead of salad dressing. Meeting with a dietician offers another layer of accountability, too. Regular workouts don’t thrill everyone, but don’t shun the idea of movement because of preconceived notions about what “exercise” means. It doesn’t have to be rigorous or complicated—all activity benefits your cardiac health. A personal trainer can be a great guide, asking you what you enjoy and creatively building fitness goals around your interests. Enjoy painting? Consider going on a morning hike to take snapshots to duplicate on canvas. Enjoy reading? Many people have gotten used to reading while riding a stationary bike. Enjoy being with friends?

Commit to trying a Zumba class together. Personal trainers are experts at making healthy movement accessible to everyone. A healthy heart needs to experience the full spectrum of intensity. Increased pumping during exercise is important, but you should also build tranquil moments of meditation and relaxation into your routine to lower your heart rate. Yoga is of great benefit to heart health. Consult with an experienced teacher about postures that involve inversions, which place the heart above the head. For some bodies, this brings nourishing blood flow to the heart and brain. In some people with diagnosed heart disease, posture modifications are needed. For those new to yoga, try gentle, restorative, or chair yoga classes. Sufficient sleep is another important factor for safeguarding cardiac health. Insomnia can lead to higher stress levels, higher blood pressure, and a decreased enthusiasm for exercise during the day. Try to incorporate a bedtime routine that allows you to go to bed and arise at roughly the same hour each day. Consistent sleep is key—there really is no such thing as “catching up” on sleep. Sleep specialists can diagnose and treat any difficulties you may be having going to sleep or staying asleep. If heart disease runs rampant in your family, consider seeing a cardiologist now, before the onset of any worrisome symptoms. If you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, or nicotine addiction, don’t just monitor these risk factors. Enlist the help of a preventive cardiologist who can actually guide you to turn the tide of heart disease. Diagnostic testing for heart disease depends on what condition is suspected and may include things like imaging tests, stress tests, or the more invasive cardiac catheterization. Treatments also vary by condition and usually start with the least invasive options, like adjustments to diet and exercise. If lifestyle changes are insufficient, medications, medical procedures, or surgical procedures may be recommended. Whether you’re 35 or 75, don’t forget that your heart needs your help! Partnering with specialists in the areas of diet, exercise, mindfulness, and cardiac care can promote excellent health, extending the length and quality of your life. Prepare for Bumps in the Road Insure Yourself!

By Brie Hellbusch

Accidents happen. It’s important to be prepared for a mishap on the road. Drive defensively, pay attention, keep your vehicle in safe driving condition, and carry the proper insurance. Of course, vehicle insurance is required by law in all 50 states, but that’s not the only reason you need coverage. Insurance can help protect drivers and their families from huge expenses, but it can also save time by avoiding the need to negotiate with other drivers and property owners involved in an accident. Additionally, car insurance may be able to help pay for medical expenses that health insurance normally wouldn’t cover. Carrying appropriate vehicle insurance also gives operators peace of mind that they will be protected if an uninsured or underinsured driver hits them. No matter what type of vehicle you have on the road—cars, trucks, SUVs, RVs, motorcycles—insurance should be a priority. Even vehicles that aren’t driven on roads, including four-wheelers, boats, jet skis, and snowmobiles, need insurance. After all, accidents happen off the road, too! State laws vary, and not all coverage options are required or even offered in all states, but there are some common types of coverage that all drivers should consider. Liability insurance includes both bodily injury liability and property damage liability, meaning that it will pay for the other party’s medical bills and vehicle repairs when you are at fault for an accident. Collision insurance pays to fix or replace the driver’s own vehicle after an accident. It’s also wise to look into comprehensive car insurance, which protects a vehicle against certain types of damage not caused by an accident, such as theft, a falling object, or a natural disaster. Often referred to as “no-fault insurance,” personal injury protection (PIP) is another type of coverage that may be useful, as it covers medical expenses incurred in an accident, regardless of fault. While medical payments (MedPay) coverage is similar to PIP, it is more limited in scope, covering accident-related medical expenses for the driver, passengers, and household members and policyholders. Unfortunately, some people do drive without auto insurance or don’t have enough coverage. This is why many drivers consider uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. If you are injured or your vehicle is damaged by another driver who doesn’t have the insurance coverage needed to pay for damages, this coverage can pay for medical bills and car repairs. Drivers of cars that are still being paid for might consider guaranteed auto protection (GAP) insurance. This type of insurance will pay for the dollar-amount “gap” between the balance of financing and what the vehicle is worth at the time of an accident. Many vehicle owners will eventually face the issue of their teenagers driving their cars, and insurance is a vital factor. It’s important to notify the insurance company when a teen driver obtains a learner’s permit, as companies may handle the situation differently and laws vary among states. Some companies will say 52

February 2021

it’s not necessary to add the teen to the policy, while others will recommend it. Unsurprisingly, coverage for used vehicles costs less than coverage for new vehicles, which is one reason that parents often have their teens drive a used car. Even on a used car, the presence of newer safety features like airbags, anti-theft devices, and anti-lock braking systems can also lower the premiums. Assuming that responsible teens make responsible drivers, many insurance companies reward good behavior with discounts on premiums. Many policyholders can take advantage of the “good student” discount. This means that teen drivers cost less to insure if they earn good grades. Some companies also lower rates once teens head off to college. Additionally, there are often discounts available for teens who have completed and passed an approved driver’s safety program beyond driver’s education. With so many considerations, selecting the right insurance can seem daunting, but it just takes some time and research. When shopping around for insurance, always inquire about state requirements, policy coverage, and what factors may cause premiums to increase. Drivers who prefer to do this kind of research themselves can certainly do so and purchase their own policies. People who don’t have the time or inclination to wade through the information can hire an independent insurance agent to do the research for them. It’s important to do an annual rate check and look at pricing from other companies to make sure you’re still getting the best deal you can. There are always bumps in the road, so we might as well prepare for them. Without vehicle insurance, a vehicle accident could be ruinous to your health, finances, or legal standing. It’s wise to be protected, and that starts with a good vehicle insurance plan. Sources for this article included: wallethub.com, verywellfamily.com, and consumerreports.org.

Cuddly Critters

Going Natural for Your Pet Natural Food, Treats, and Products

By Brie Hellbusch

What’s the key to pets (and their humans) living long and healthy lives? Many experts suggest that it all begins with proper nutrition. In fact, nutrition plays a crucial role in the health of all living things. It’s fundamentally important that pets receive all of the essential nutrients they need to thrive. Good nutrition boosts an animal’s energy level, supports the immune system, and helps maintain healthy weight. It can also help with vomiting, diarrhea, and other symptoms of infection and poor health. One of the easiest ways pet owners can ensure the most nutritious ingredients enter their animals’ system is through implementing a natural pet diet. Generally speaking (for humans and animals like), the fresher and less processed the food, the better. As food is processed, nutrients are lost. A diet rich in antioxidants and high-quality protein can promote good health. Unfortunately, many major pet food brands contain fillers that can lead to weight issues in animals. (As with human food, these fillers are generally added to reduce cost.) The starch, dyes, preservatives, and synthetic nutrients in many commercial pet foods can also cause allergic reactions or other unhealthy outcomes. Natural food that is home-cooked or raw tends to have a very high water content, making it much easier for a pet to digest. Better yet, a healthy and natural diet can promote a healthier urinary tract and can improve cognitive function, which fuels learning and alertness. In many cases, natural food is more appealing to pets because it is less processed, so it maintains the smell and flavor of the ingredients. This is especially beneficial when it comes to pets who are picky eaters. Natural pet food that uses high-quality animal protein, combined with minerals and omegas, can help to reduce hair loss as well as develop a softer and more resistant coat. Raw food, which is purchased frozen and is thawed before feeding, is mostly freshly ground meat and bones. Many brands also contain fruits, vegetables, and, sometimes, grains. Raw chicken and turkey necks are great for cleaning teeth, providing natural calcium and phosphorus, and adding variety to a dog’s diet. Many chronic and degenerative diseases may be reduced or prevented by feeding your pet an appropriate raw diet. There’s also the premixed option for home-prepared food, which is quick and easy—all the pet owner needs to do is add water and meat to make a complete meal. When there’s no time for food prep, canned natural pet food is also great for adding variety into a pet’s diet and is definitely better than just dry kibble. Adding natural treats to the menu is also sure to please any furry friend. While treats should only make up

about 10 percent of an animal’s daily diet, it’s still important that they be made from high-quality ingredients. As with humans, the natural lifestyle isn’t just about food. It can also refer to pain relief options. Take CBD oil, for example. In recent years, it has become well known for its therapeutic qualities and has been shown to have various positive effects, such as relieving anxiety, pain, and inflammation, as well as lowering the frequency and intensity of seizures. It can even be used to get better sleep at night. After many years of research, experimentation, and use in humans, CBD oil has entered the animal market. The oil, which is believed to alleviate pain, tenderness, and chronic aches caused by common conditions in animals, can come in the form of treats, topical creams, capsules, and tinctures. CBD oil products geared toward pets are often found in the same stores that carry human CBD products. Be sure to ask for evidence that their products are tested at independent laboratories. While humans can choose what they put into their bodies, animals do not have that luxury—they must eat what their caregivers provide. This is why it’s so important that caregivers (including pet owners, pet sitters, and pet trainers) make educated choices about pet food and care products. When it comes to selecting the proper products and food for a pet, it’s always best to consult a trusted veterinarian or expert in the pet food and health industry. Offering a healthy and delicious diet to pets is one of the most kind and crucial aspects of being a good pet parent. While it may seem like a balancing act, creating a nutritious food plan doesn’t have to be complicated. In reality, there are many resources available that can help pet owners find the options that will keep their sweet fur babies healthy for years to come. Mr. Sandless Floor Refinishing Like New in No Time! By Linda Sutherland

Have your old hardwood floors seen better days? Do you miss the sparkle and shine they brought to your home when they were glistening and new? Are you tired of looking at dull, drab flooring but afraid that refinishing will be a long and tedious undertaking, leaving your household completely out of commission for more time than you can spare? It’s true that furniture and belongings have to be removed from the interior of the home during traditional sanding and refinishing, and the process leaves the home covered in inches of dust and particles that can linger for months after the floors are completed. Don’t worry—you no longer have to go through that inconvenience to restore your wood floor’s beauty. Mr. Sandless is here to help. Julie Meyer owns the new Omaha franchise of Mr. Sandless Floor Refinishing, a national flooring business that started more than 20 years ago in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Julie hails from a military family and is involved in hospital administration and nursing. Though she gets great satisfaction from helping people in the field of health care,

she recently found that she also wanted to be involved in Julie Meyer, franchise owner something that was her own. Julie had always enjoyed fixing up houses, so she researched the Mr. Sandless franchise as an opportunity to branch out. She first enlisted her older brother, Keith, to come and work with her on this exciting new project. Now, Julie’s son, Chris, is part of the business, as well. It is most evident that this family likes to work together and improve

the lives of their clients and customers by beautifying their surroundings in a convenient way. Julie opened her Mr. Sandless franchise in March of 2020, which was a challenging moment to start a new business, to say the least. Not to be deterred by adverse conditions, she jumped in with both feet and has experienced a lot of success with Mr. Sandless! As the name implies, this method of floor treatment leaves no sandy, dusty mess to clean up. The process of refinishing floors without sanding is fascinating, and the greatest selling point of all is the minimal downtime to your household and your life. How do they refinish a wood floor without making a dusty mess? They start by applying a non-toxic wet solution to prepare the floor. Their specialized high-speed floor machine then smooths the floor with a series of scrub pads. Particles that come off the floor are contained in the solution, preventing dust. The next step is to seal the floor with their own brand of commercial grade sealer and hybrid urethane topcoats, with which their customized colors are mixed to achieve the perfect tone for your home. There’s plenty of time for multiple coats, as needed; the final finish dries within two hours. Mr. Sandless provides a five-year warranty that the finish will not peel, crack, chip, or yellow. With proper care, these floors can last for many years. Mr. Sandless can also handle floor damage, including paint drips, over-applied acrylic cleaning products, and pet stains. (Keep in mind that extensive pet damage may mean that some boards need to be replaced.) This innovative

AAOS Half BW.indd 1

sandless process is the perfect answer for floors that have been sanded several times already and do not have sufficient floorboard left for another sanding. Mr. Sandless can also refinish laminate flooring and tile flooring. By sealing the floor and renewing the finish, this process provides an enhanced and refreshed look to drab, tired floors. The process is completely child-safe and petsafe and can be used in the home or in commercial buildings. Julie is excited about her foray into floor refinishing as a business owner. Others who are considering starting a business, now or at any time, should expect the unexpected, she says. “You must do your due diligence and research. You’ll need support, but don’t be afraid of the unknown. Just go for it!” Most importantly, she adds, “treat people exactly the way you want to be treated.” That’s the key to success in any field! Julie Meyer is extremely proud of her flourishing business and appreciates the positive feedback she receives from her happy customers. This family operation thrives on improving lives through beautiful floors. Don’t spend another day walking around on dull floors! Call Julie at 712-396-9288 or reach her online at www.mrsandless.com. Visit the website for more information about the sandless refinishing process and to learn about the other home improvement services offered by Mr. Sandless Floor Refinishing. They will have a booth at the Home and Garden Expo, February 18th through 21st.

Carpet Shedding? Shed the Rug! Modern Hard Surface Flooring

By Anne Yankus

For years, flooring trends have been moving away from carpeting and toward hard surface flooring. It’s not just hardwood flooring, either. From laminate to concrete to porcelain tile, there are lots of hard surface flooring options that will give your home a clean and modern look. With their simple beauty, classic charm, and impressive longevity, hardwood floors like oak, maple, and mahogany really never go out of style. Softer cork has seen a surge in popularity in recent years due to its soft surface, its ability to absorb temperatures (keeping your floor cool in hot weather), and the fact that it is often made of recycled and natural materials. Like anything of high quality, wood floors are expensive up front. However, these naturally durable floors can last a lifetime or longer with the proper care. This means regular maintenance, including cleaning, polishing, and a waterproof sealant. One great advantage of wood floors is that they can be sanded down and refinished multiple times, bringing new life to a well-worn floor. Laminate floors, on the other hand, are quite affordable without any loss of durability! Unlike wooden floors, laminate floors are completely waterproof and resistant to scratching and warping under high traffic. Laminate floors also come in a

wide variety of styles, colors, and textures to match any room. If you like a sleek look, you may want to check into getting a concrete floor. Concrete floors are highly durable and can be stained and polished for a beautiful floor that complements any home style. The specialized labor that goes into installing concrete flooring raises its price, but it will last a very long time. A more natural-looking alternative to concrete is stone flooring. Stone floors like granite or slate are durable, strong, and naturally non-porous (making them waterproof and resistant to stains). Usually installed in large tiles or slabs, stone floors can add a cool look to your home…but keep in mind that they will also feel quite cold. Another durable, waterproof option is porcelain or ceramic tile. This type of flooring holds up well in high-traffic areas that are likely to be wet from time to time, like kitchens, bathrooms, and entryways. If a single tile gets cracked or chipped, it can

be replaced without having to take up the whole floor. Tiles come in a wide variety of beautiful designs and colors. A unique porcelain design that’s grown in popularity recently is wood-grain patterns. The popularity of vinyl comes from its affordability, durability, ease of installation, and comfort underfoot. Vinyl planks can be installed over other floors, even concrete. (Note that they are easy to remove if installed as “floating floors” but tough to get out if adhesive is used.) Vinyl is a very low-maintenance, waterproof material that comes in many patterns. If you’re not sure what sort of flooring will complement your home, talk to an interior designer or design consultant. A professional designer can help you get a solid plan in place that will fit your aesthetic and your budget! Once you’ve chosen what kind of flooring you want, the next step is to hire the right professionals to install it. If you are working with an independent designer, ask for a recommendation. The retailer where you purchased your flooring will also likely have ideas or may even employ installers as a part of their team. You can also check with neighbors and friends. The installer will come to your house to measure and prepare a size and price estimate. The pricing estimate can take a few minutes if done on the spot, but it’s not uncommon for contractors to take your size estimate back to their shop and call you with price estimates a day or two later. At this point, you’ll also want to iron out a few details with your contractor. Who is responsible for moving your furniture? Will they be cutting the flooring indoors or outdoors (some types of flooring create a lot of airborne debris when cut)? Will the rooms being worked on be sealed off with plastic? How will your baseboards be handled? When you schedule your installation, keep in mind that the rooms in question will need to be completely cleared and avoided (your installer will let you know how long to avoid the new floor). Natural wood flooring will also require an acclimation period of at least three days; the planks need to acclimate to the ambient moisture and air levels within your home. After installation, it’s time to enjoy your new floor! Start fresh in 2021 by bringing new life to your home with hard surface flooring. Independent Insurance Advisors Putting the CARE in Medicare By Marge Shoemaker

We all know that we need some kind of medical insurance. When we reach a certain age, we start getting lots of Medicare information in the mail. The questions arise: How do we know what coverage we need? Which carrier will cover our needs the best? What is the coverage going to cost? Can I make changes as my circumstances change? Where do I go to get answers? At least the answer to the last question is easy! Go to Insurance Advisors, where their independent agents specialize in Medicare coverage, affordable care policies (for those under 65) and life insurance. The company, co-owned by Lisa Wilsey and Michelle Scianna Panowicz, was established 16 years ago, and they’ve been at their present central Omaha location for two years. Their website states that they “put the CARE in Medicare” by listening to your needs. Because they are independent advisors, they have the ability to write coverage with multiple Medicare insurance carriers. “We aren’t paid by the client/policyholder,” explains Kristin Ehlers, an independent agent on the Insurance Advisors team. “Payment comes to our company from the carriers.” That way, the independent agents aren’t under pressure to meet a policy quota. Kristin truly enjoys her work. “I look forward to coming to the office,” she says enthusiastically. “My coworkers are knowledgeable and focused. We are experts in the field of Medicare insurance!” Client Robert T. appreciates the exceptional service that Kristin provides. “They’re always there with a prompt reply to any questions. Kristin is very knowledgeable, kind, and fun to work with. She’s been a big help with my mother in assisted living.” Kristin got into the insurance business after she had children and wanted a job with flexible hours. “I’ve always liked working with…and helping…others,” she says. Her grandparents had been in hospice care at the end of their lives. This experience motivated Kristin to learn more about the health insurance industry, especially regarding seniors, after seeing the stress her parents, aunts, and uncles went through during their last days, having to make decisions. Kristin earned an insurance license and certification, making Medicare her specialty. “I want to make sure individuals are able to take advantage of all the government and private policy benefits available the them,” says Kristin. “With the way the laws and requirements are changing, I’m learning every day…everyone in the office does. Each client is different. We need to know where to find the coverage that meets their needs,” she states. As an independent agent, Kristin can write a policy from any company, but she generally prefers United Healthcare. “I like their customer service as well as their range of plans,” she advises. “They’re easy for me and my clients to 62

work with.” She offers her clients several plans, enabling Kristin Ehlers, Independent Agent them to make educated choices. “My job is to advise and be helpful.” One of the challenges for independent agent/advisors is growing their own client base. As it turns out, it’s all about communication. “I meet with people and network with other agents,” Kristin says. “Learning about my clients’ lives makes my job easier. My clients let me know when they have a change of circumstances or a question about coverage. When we share personal information, it brings us closer. Many of my clients become my friends.” One of the pleasures of Kristin’s job is finding just the right coverage for her clients. “Many people don’t know the range of care available, such as for some persons under 65. Medicaid might be applicable for someone who is disabled,” she notes. “There are also low-income subsidies and plans to cover dental health, mental health, and prescription drugs.” Medicare rates are regulated by the government and can’t be adjusted, she explains, but there are ways to plan ahead for this. “‘Spend Down’ accounts can be arranged to get income and assets down to a government-accepted level,” she notes. As in any industry, the insurance industry does harbor some unethical people, Kristin says. It’s important for clients to know what is allowed and what is not. “It’s against the law for anyone to charge you for medical insurance advice,” she says firmly. “Advisors are paid by the policy carrier and local agents, not clients. If you are charged a fee for medical insurance advice, you should contact the local licensing or certifying agency or the local Medicare office to report it.” She also advises us to be proactive and get a review of our coverages so we know our options. Satisfied client Mary W. is glad she found Kristin. “I saw Kristin’s ad in Women’s Edition when I was considering options for my health care,” she recalls. “Kristin made the whole process easy and readily answered all of my questions.” Please call Kristin, Lisa, or Michelle at 402-630-0033 to schedule a virtual or in-person appointment. Kristin is fluent in English and Spanish. Insurance Advisors is located at 10868 West Dodge Road, in Omaha.

“I have had the opportunity and honor to be affiliated with Women’s Edition Magazine and their wonderful staff since 1990. We are a solely referral-based practice, BUT, due to the positive response that we have received about Women’s Edition, we continue to maintain an association with them. They are above and beyond courteous and receptive to all of our ideas for ads (some a bit unique) and offer great input so they can be understood by the public. We thank Women’s Edition and look forward to another 100 years of affiliation with them!” —Lyle E. Koca, D.C.

Positive Perspective

The Little Voice Talk Kindly to Yourself

By Janet Van deWalle

What kind of conversation are you having with

yourself right now? What words are scrolling through your brain? Are you thinking good thoughts or are you beating yourself up? “It’s not what we say out loud that really determines our lives. It’s what we whisper to ourselves that has the most power.” —Robert Kiyosaki

I am revisiting a terrific book that I haven’t read in a very long time. It is “How to Heal Your Life” by Louise Hay. This is a book that my mother gave to me many, many years ago. It’s been a great way for me to remember so many things that have helped me over the years. I realized that I had forgotten some of Louise’s Hay’s words of wisdom. The importance of self-talk is one of those concepts! “Self-talk is the most powerful form of communication because it either empowers you or it defeats you.” —Wright Thurston

My Little Voice, which is what I call my self-talk, really makes a huge difference in all of my life experiences. Depending on what it is saying, my day can be joyful or full of challenges. When I wake up in the morning, my conversation with my Little Voice usually starts out pretty well. I stretch, I smile, I am

appreciative of a good night of sleep. That’s a good start. Then, occasionally, I find my Little Voice moving toward the dark side.“You’d better get up, or you’ll be late,” it admonishes.“Skip your exercise this morning,” it schemes.“You have so much to do today,” it sighs. “It’s going to be a very long day.” “Be mindful of your self-talk. It’s a conversation with the Universe.” —Davis James

When my Little Voice pipes up in this way, I am learning to immediately take a U-turn! “How to Heal Your Life” teaches the importance of paying attention to what we are telling ourselves. The book gives very specific tools and techniques to change our self-talk so that our brain is serving us…instead of us serving our brain. I had forgotten this truth. I had allowed my Little Voice to be in charge of me and my life, instead of me being in charge! “Talk to yourself like you would to someone you love.” —Karolina Kurkova

It is amazing how quickly your life can change once you decide to take control of that Little Voice. The change began about a week after I started to gain control. After 30 days, I felt better. Every day since, I gain more control over my attitude. Life is getting better and better—and that’s a great thing! Give it a try!

“We have gotten a ton of business from our advertising with Women’s Edition. It’s insane the number of calls we get from the ad. You were right, it took some time to see the results...consistency, inevitably, is truly the key. I also appreciate your customer service and continual follow-up. Women’s Edition has been a great decision to grow my business. If it’s not broken—don’t fix it.
