Love Your Family Hello! Are you staying warm? I’m writing October’s

column on September 9, and it is darned cold out there. The long-range forecast doesn’t look a whole lot better! I am a huge fan of autumn, but not this early. My husband, Manny, dug out a winter coat for me before we went to grab some dinner last night, and it felt so good! I’m hoping this sudden chill is not a preview of the winter we will be heading into. Just this past weekend, it was in the 90s. Manny and I hosted a gettogether at our house for my daughter, Carissa, her husband, Ken, and my granddaughters, Savannah and McKenna. We had a terrific time. Ken provided a smoked salmon that he had prepared on his Traeger grill. Manny and I provided the garnishes: cocktail-size rye bread, sour cream, chopped hard-boiled egg, capers, chopped red onion, chopped parsley, and caviar. We added the salmon and topped it off with a squeeze of lemon juice and a little bit of freshly ground black pepper. Now, many kids wouldn’t even try this wonderful meal, but not our girls! This is the second time we have all shared this meal. We all love it…including the girls. Ken does a terrific job smoking the salmon. Then we all sit around and build little sandwiches, talk, laugh, and enjoy one another’s company. It is very a very “communal” experience. In addition to that, it is one of the tastiest meals I’ve ever had. I’ve been doing this recipe for decades! It came from the Silver Palate Cookbook series. It’s always a huge hit when I bring it to parties. Years ago, I took it to a Christmas Eve get-together. My Aunt Bea, who was 90 years old at the time, told me, “This is the best thing I have ever eaten!” Now, that’s a testimony you can’t beat. I sat by my sweet Aunt Bea, who passed away several years ago. I couldn’t believe how many salmon sandwiches she ate. She was a tiny lady, but I kept making her the tiny sandwiches, one right after another. It is a very fond memory! Give it a try; I really think you’ll like it. To build the sandwich, Carissa strongly recommends that you put the sour cream on the cocktail rye and then “put anything that rolls on the bread next!” She’s right. I hope you all have taken some family time throughout this year. There is nothing like sitting around a kitchen table with our loved ones to make life worth living. Have a great month and a happy Halloween!

It’s time to enroll for health insurance! Open enrollment is October 15 through December 7th. Halloween Pumpkin Bars For the pumpkin bars: Whisk together 2 cups of flour, 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon, and 2 teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice; set aside. In a large mixing bowl, mix 1 cup of vegetable oil, 3 large eggs, 1 cup of light brown sugar, 1/3 cup of white sugar, a 15-ounce can of pumpkin puree, 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla extract, and 2 Tablespoons of pure maple syrup (NOT pancake syrup). Add the wet ingredients to the dry until combined. Pour the batter into a greased jelly roll pan (10x15 inches). Bake at 350 degrees for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack for 45 minutes. For the cream cheese frosting: Mix an 8-ounce package of soft cream cheese with 1/4 cup of soft butter, 3 cups of powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, 1/4 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice, and a dash of salt. Mix until creamy. Spread onto cooled bars. Decorate with an assortment of Halloween sprinkles or sliced candy pumpkins. Cut into bars. Store in refrigerator. WE

Fall Fashions

Bring out the Exotic in You!

By Holly Bell

Nature has been an inspiration for clothing designers for centuries! In the 1700s, wearing animal prints became popular as a sign of influence and elevated status. Animal print has become a classic since then and continues its reign in the fashion jungle this fall. You can find these versatile prints in subtle, bold, and sassy designs. Don’t be afraid to invest in this ongoing trend—it will be on point for years to come. Based on what we’ve seen on the runways recently, zebra print is going to be the most popular animal print this fall, with tiger stripes, snakeskin, and leopard spots not far behind. The usual way to style animal prints is to pair them with neutrals or black and white. This year, consider some new ideas to keep the look fresh and a little wild! Try choosing an animal print that incorporates a bright color. For example, instead of a black-and-white zebra stripe, designers are offering zebra stripes with bright blues, yellows, and brilliant greens. If you love wearing a pop of color along with a wild print, this kills two birds with one stone! You could also choose to pair your zebra or leopard print with red. This combination looks surprisingly chic! For the more conservative fashionista, fabulous animal print accessories can top off any look. As you may have noticed, belts are back in a big way. Turn a ho-hum outfit into a trendy one by adding a leopard belt. If you like basic black, add a little zest to your outfit by rocking some animal print shoes, boots, or a bag! Have fun creating unique, stylish combinations with animal print accessories. Along with the animal looks, the natural combination of fur comes into play this fall and winter. Faux fur done in creative ways is perfect for those of us who live in the polar vortex! On the coldest days, you cannot beat faux fur for warmth and style. If you’re in the market for a winter coat this year, take special note of the oversized fur collar. The fall classics we know and love are still with us this year. Preppy looks, along with Scottish plaids, are very much in style. These exuberant patterns have been part of the fall fashion world for decades and settle nicely into a vintage feel. All-black is back in a big way this year (that is, if it ever left). Embellished with ruffles, netting, faux fur, and glitz, the all-black outfit this year is anything but boring! We will also see lots of bold reds this fall. Not since the heyday of Valentino red in the 1990s has the color felt more relevant. For an uplifting boost to your wardrobe after a difficult year, a red dress may be just what you need. Red paired with black is also a vibrant combination sure to give anyone a lift, including the people wearing it and the lucky folks who get to look at it! Entertaining details are looking fresh again this year. On handbags, vests, and skirts, fringe is always fun! Pronounced shoulders and mutton sleeves will be found everywhere. These bold shoulders and sleeves remind us of a bygone era of glamour and fantasy—the look conveys a feeling of power.

My favorite trend this year is in shoes. High statement strutters are out of the picture, as the focus is on more comfortable, lower-heeled shoes. Loafers that have that Gucci vibe are perfect with the animal prints and plaids coming out this year. For those occasions when you want a more feminine look, Mary Janes or sleek sling-backs can be the perfect choice. Boots are featuring low-heeled looks, also. The rain “welly” will be seen everywhere this year. Practical and stylish, the welly is a great all-weather boot. This tall boot, usually made of a seamless weatherproof material, is named after the first Duke of Wellington. Wellies have been popular in England for a long time and have made their way across the pond. It is a stylish boot that is truly weatherproof. Good news for the bling lovers out there: After a summer of minimal jewelry, we can indulge in more statement pieces this fall. Gold is the expensive look and a chic choice. Silver is relegated to a more casual vibe. Multi-purpose gold chains are perfect for fall and can also be worn as belts! After a year of challenges, we look forward to a vibrant fall, with beautiful colors and patterns to create a warm, comforting message. Find something to bring out the exotic in you! Editor’s Note: Holly has been in the fashion industry for over 30 years as a buyer, boutique store owner, visual merchandiser, and fashion show producer. She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE

Need Help Navigating a Chaotic World? Trust Your Chastain Otis Agent By Cynthia Jeffrey

Insurance is one of those complicated things in life that we all need but that many of us don’t fully understand. With so many variables to consider, the majority of people don’t have the knowhow to wade into the fine print. If you need help cutting through the red tape of insurance for your home or business, turn to Chastain Otis Insurance and Financial Services. The history of the company is an interesting story of its own. Otis Insurance began back in the 1930s with Rol Otis. Chastain Insurance was started in 1954 by Dick Chastain. Their sons, Dave Chastain and Don Otis, joined forces in 1994 to create Chastain Otis Insurance. When the Chastain and Otis families joined forces, the business became a partnership of well-respected and trusted agents who pride themselves on building successful relationships with clients. Chastain Otis Insurance offers a wide variety of personal and business options. They partner with many coverage providers to meet their clients’ individual insurance coverage needs. Lori Huffman joined the company in 2002 and brings her own passion, as well as 28 years of experience, to her work. For Lori, communication is the key to her success with her clients—and her clients agree with this assessment. “Her response to emails, questions, and phone calls is always extremely prompt,” says Michele Meyer. “She possesses a profound respect for the value of customer service.” Client Tamara Weinert shares her own positive experience with Lori: “Over the past three years, Lori and her team have always been quick in responding to our business needs, questions, and concerns.” It’s no surprise that many of her new clients are referrals from current clients, and that’s what Lori considers the ultimate compliment. The focus on customer service doesn’t stop with Lori; it’s part of the culture at Chastain Otis. Lori knows she can depend on her colleagues to provide the same level of care and professionalism that she herself brings to each client interaction. Lori’s specialty is selling commercial insurance, but she also serves her clients with their personal and life insurance needs. In order to provide excellent service to her clients, Lori strives to keep learning about the intricacies of her field. She participates in ongoing continuing education classes and worked to obtain the designation of Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC). She challenges herself to stay on top of the ever-changing world of insurance, attending monthly meetings with other individual agents in Omaha. Lori interviews each potential client to ascertain individual or business needs. This allows her to provide narratives on potential clients before sending their

12

October 2020

information to the underwriters. In the long run, this saves time by avoiding the need to go back and gather additional information. These interviews are also opportunities to find out what potential clients already know about their insurance needs and what they still need to learn. It’s a pleasure to work with clients who take what they do seriously and will comply with an insurance company’s requirements, Lori notes, but even serious clients may have things to learn about the rules and regulations in their field of operation. It’s important to meet them where they are and move on from there. Lori works with a wide variety of businesses, from small retail stores to large contractors, and it’s no small task to stay up-to-date on the insurance rules and requirements for so many industries. Luckily, she enjoys the challenge of expanding her expertise. “I have met many wonderful people and developed strong relationships,” she says. Lori understands the need for a fast response when a crisis occurs and ensures that her clients have a direct contact when they need help. This can be a particularly vital service to a client in a complicated industry. Michele is the President and CEO of CSCI Consulting, which provides services to defense agencies and military commands. “At times, we have relied heavily on Lori to provide very specialized coverage as well as ensure we were positioned for minimal overall risk,” says Michele. “I love having a single point of contact who can take care of every need our business may have. Lori is a gem, professional to the core.” Lori Huffman truly loves what she does, and it shows in her work. In a chaotic world, we all need someone we can trust. You can count on Lori and the team at Chastain Otis Insurance and Financial Services to offer their expertise and compassion for all your insurance needs. Chastain Otis Insurance and Financial Services is located in Omaha at 10822 Old Mill Road, Suite 2. Give them a call at 402-397-2500 and chat about your options. The big bold moon may give you the courage to put truth into action. Scorpio (Oct 23–Nov 21) Advice is coming to you from someone you admire. You will do well to listen and carefully consider what words this sage has to offer. Sagittarius (Nov 22–Dec 21) Unwind as much as you can and curl up by the fire with a good book. After you relax and rejuvenate, you will feel ready to resume your energetic life. Capricorn (Dec 22–Jan 19) You are feeling very indecisive lately. Do not let this weigh on you; now is simply not the right time to make any commitments. Aquarius (Jan 20–Feb 18) When the full moon arrives, you allow time for amusement and games—and that is okay! Redirect your thoughts to more serious issues later on.

Taurus (Apr 20–May 20) You may have had to delay some special plans you made. Feeling disappointed is natural, but don’t be discouraged! Jupiter is settling down in your sign; soon, you will be able to resume any delayed activities. Gemini (May 21–Jun 20) This October, take some time to focus on your inner self. Leo (Jul 23–Aug 22) You will begin to see hints of positive things on the horizon, especially where personal ambition is concerned! Treat yourself with a unique purchase, like an antique or work of art that catches your eye.

Aries (Mar 21–Apr 19) With a full moon in Aries this October and Mercury in retrograde on the 31st, things may feel spooky! That’s not always a bad thing. Embrace it and dance under the moon.

Virgo (Aug 23–Sep 22) Set aside some time the day of the full moon for relaxation. It will have a very positive influence on you. It’s time to get happy! WE

You might think that sane people, by the time they reach adulthood, would have given up the prospect of scaring themselves silly. After all, aren’t frights and zombies for kids? Aren’t ghosts really just the neighbor man running around in one of his wife’s old sheets? And those things that go bump in the night are usually the dog moving around on the porch or a little brother making the noise that all little brothers make. Creepy stories are for kids, right? Right? Then again, there seems to be something about us, as humans, that makes us want to be a little scared now and then. We feel the need to bring ourselves right to the edge of reason before reeling ourselves back to safety. If you’re a thrill seeker, Halloween might have been invented with you in mind. As we move through life, many of us enjoy bragging or thinking about ourselves as totally sane and somewhat sophisticated. We are able to reason away anything untoward that might happen to us. Superstition and wonder have by now been replaced with logic and common sense. In other words, we like to lead lives full of peace and quiet. But wait! At least once a year, a little Halloween voice speaks to us, telling us to be frivolous, outrageous, and maybe just a little bit crazy. Perfectly mature adults do not hesitate to turn themselves

into terrifying zombies, participating in elaborate nighttime parades and wearing spooky costumes that would turn our hair gray on any other night of the year. We make strange noises and paint our faces to resemble characters that we would not want to meet in a dark alley or anywhere else. During the last weeks of October, wandering zombies and thirsty vampires often frequent abandoned houses that have somehow been transformed into some of the spookiest properties on Earth. Marauding ghosts and other creatures from the dark side set up temporary residence in these haunted houses or barns, ready to scare any unsuspecting soul halfway out of his skin.

Trick-or-treating seems to be waning as a holiday tradition, replaced by organized parties in church social halls, shopping malls, and schools. Well-meaning adults are usually the coordinators of these affairs, and the spookiness is tightly managed. Super sugary treats are sometimes replaced by healthy snacks and toothbrushes. Pencils have taken the place of popcorn balls. Most of this activity is in response to a few black-hearted spooks in the past who wanted to bring harm to little spooks. Still, Halloween has many faces. We can have fun or we can be terrified. Fun is good. Terror can be acceptable, if kept within limits. If you have little spooks this Halloween, you’ll probably find yourself touring the saner establishments, which still categorize the holiday as one of fun and frivolity. Witches, pumpkins, black cats, and pirates populate this world. If, however, you are ready to frighten yourself enough to sleep with the lights on for a month, there are plenty of venues to make your Halloween a truly scary event. Fright movies abound and are easy to find at this time of the year. Check one out, but try to remember—it’s just a movie. Many people love to read a spooky book before turning out the lights. If you do this, expect to have a few crazy nightmares. Halloween is found today mostly at Halloween parties. Some of these gatherings have become quite complicated, resplendent with elaborate costumes that prevent us from recognizing other partygoers. Ornate and often terrifying decorations are strategically placed to heighten the experience, and extremely scary foods such as eyeball cupcakes or vampire bones load down the serving tables. However you plan to celebrate this craziest of holidays, be sure to keep yourself and everyone safe. There are lots of opportunities for danger as we increase our enthusiasm for fun and often forget to use our common sense. It is relatively easy to have all kinds of fun while remaining safe and secure. A few rules of the road include wearing costumes that do not inhibit your eyesight (including your peripheral vision). Many costumers insist on wearing few accessories, as these elements can become distracting. Always choose fabrics that are not flammable. This is, after all, a time of the year when candles are often employed. Be safe this Halloween, and don’t forget to have lots of fun! WE October 2020

Central Plains ENT & Audiology The Care You Need, At Home!

By Janette Calabro

Everyone’s journey into hearing loss is different—that’s why the team at Central Plains ENT & Audiology commits to listening to each patient and finding a perfect-fit technology to meet each patient’s individual needs. Gary Moore, MD, and Trish Morrow, AuD, started practicing together in 1985. Both worked at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and then at Boys Town National Research Institute. After Dr. Morrow moved to Washington to practice as a clinical audiologist, Dr. Moore and his wife (also a physician) opened their own private practice in 2002. That’s when Central Plains was born…but something was missing. “So much of what we do is based on a functional hearing test or a balance test,” says Dr. Moore. “You have to have someone competent doing that for you.” They needed someone to run the hearing imbalance lineup, and Dr. Morrow fit the bill. Luckily, they were able to convince Dr. Morrow to come back home to Omaha. As friends who trained and practiced together over decades, Drs. Morrow and Moore complement each other just as you’d expect. Dr. Morrow explains medical terminology with ease, breaking it down so each patient understands what is happening (or not happening) inside the ear. Dr. Moore describes the medical procedures with the clarity and honesty he would offer to his own family. A healthy ear detects sound and sends the information to the brain for processing. Sounds enter the ear canal and travel to the eardrum. The sound waves vibrate in the eardrum, and that sends the bones in the middle ear into motion. Motion transfers to electrical impulses inside the inner ear (the cochlea), and those impulses are sent to the brain, perceived by us as sound. There are many types of hearing loss that can only be diagnosed by a professional. Hearing loss, balance challenges, and vertigo can result from lifestyle factors, health conditions, and injuries. Loud noise, smoking, and acoustic neuroma (a tumor causing blockage and ringing) are just some of the possible causes of hearing loss. The good news? There are lots of ways to help. Drs. Moore and Morrow use several tests to determine the source of the problem. The ears are delicately balanced, sensing information from the soles of your feet to the spinal cord, and then on to the brain. There are two ways our ears pick up sound—through air conduction and through bone conduction. A boneanchored hearing aid, or BAHA implant, is based on bone conduction. “The BAHA implant has been around for a long time, but there has been significant improvement in the processors,” says Dr. Moore. “The new bone anchor can be buried completely under the skin to decrease the chance of infection.”

18

October 2020

“A bone anchor is a titanium abutment surgically implanted in the bone behind the ear,” Dr. l-r: Krissa Downey, Morrow chimes in. “Your ears are totally open. It’s really Au.D, CCC-A; nice for people who can’t wear a hearing aid if their Michael Grace, BC, HIS; Trish Morrow, AU.D; ears are plugged up or they get ear infections.” “Everything we do has two parts to it,” Dr. Moore Gary Moore, MD, FACS; Iris Moore, MD, FACS; continues. “There’s one part that’s in the body, and and Taylor Hepp, PA-C then there’s the external processor, which is batteryoperated. There’s no way to charge the batteries if they’re all internal.” The very first cochlear implant (surgically implanted for extreme hearing loss) had one electrode. Now, they have 22, at a fraction of the original size. “The cochlear implant has been an evolution. When we were doing these in the 1980s, they were not as good as they are today,” Dr. Morrow recalls. “A direct advantage is that patients with cochlear implants can get an MRI now because there’s no magnet in the implant.” The newest hearing aid, the Earlens, is made right in the office from a custom mold of the ear canal. The lens is placed directly on the eardrum, resulting in rich, natural sound. “It’s like custommade jewelry,” says Dr. Moore. Dr. Morrow adds, “There’s no feedback. It’s like having a contact lens for your ear!” Its other advantages include Bluetooth technology and an extended frequency range, but Dr. Moore emphasizes that “the most important thing is that it significantly improves clarity of hearing for the patient.” “The whole idea is to improve the patient’s hearing and quality of life,” concludes Dr. Moore. “Most people who need our services are starting to withdraw from social activities because they can’t hear. It causes depression, or they lose their job because of vertigo. It’s really satisfying to help those people.” You can reach Dr. Gary Moore, Dr. Trish Morrow, and the whole team at Central Plains ENT & Audiology by calling 402-502-6970 or visiting centralplainsent.com. Central Plains ENT & Audiology is located in Omaha at 8005 Farnam Drive, Suite 204. WE

Fresh Concept

Physical Therapy Medicine for Movement! By Janette Calabro

We’re all looking for spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being in one way or another. Physical therapy connects these three concepts, shining a light on our best selves. When physical therapists help alleviate physical pain, they’re also helping us to be the best we can be and to overcome things we thought we couldn’t. Functional movement is key to our maximum health—mind, body, and soul. Physical therapy (PT), also known as physiotherapy, is a health profession that treats chronic pain, physical deficiency, and dysfunctional movement, all of which usually result from an illness, injury, or trauma. Whether you’re being treated for cancer, recovering from a heart attack or stroke, rehabilitating after a sports injury, or hoping to avoid your family’s propensity toward osteoporosis, physical therapists can help. They are highly trained to help people of all ages live their healthiest and most active lives. They develop individual treatment plans to restore function and reduce pain. They even incorporate fitness goals for prevention, independence, and overall wellness. In the United States, a physical therapist earns a bachelor’s degree before advancing to a doctorate in physical therapy (DPT). Study for this advanced degree is approved by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education, and the course of study usually takes three years to complete. Even after obtaining these degrees, graduates must pass a state licensing exam before they can practice. Biology, anatomy, exercise physiology, pathology, kinesiology, and neuroscience are only a fraction of the curriculum studied by physical therapists. PTs are also well-versed in behavioral science, communication, and clinical reasoning so they can identify and take on each patient’s challenges. Physical therapy practices like massage, manual therapy, and hydrotherapy have been around for thousands of years. In the 18th century, musculoskeletal physicians (now known as orthopedists) developed gymnastic-like machines to help treat gout and other joint diseases through systematic exercise. Modern physical therapy was better established in the early 20th century during global events like the 1916 polio outbreak. During the First World War, women trained in physical education were recruited to help restore function to wounded soldiers. Physical therapists were standard in hospitals around the time that polio vaccines were developed in the early 1950s. By the end of the decade, they had moved into their own clinics, schools, nursing homes, and rehab centers. Today, physical therapists can specialize in just about every minor ache or major trauma, neurological rehabilitation, or wellness program to help prevent loss of mobility before it starts. If you’re giving aging or injury the last word on your active lifestyle, give physical therapy a try instead. Let’s check out some common and uncommon reasons to seek out the experts.

20

October 2020

Sprains, strains, fractures, and dislocation are just some of the damage you can experience after a sports injury. These injuries are not uncommon among those with an active lifestyle. Specialized physical therapy can alleviate pain, help injured patients regain strength and mobility, and even prevent further damage. Whether you developed shin splints running long distances, twisted your knee in a fitness class, or tangoed your way to hip flexor pain, your suffering warrants the attention of a physical therapist. PTs can help with concussion recovery by using exercises for body balance and sensory information to help with spatial placement and equilibrium in motion. Manual therapy helps decrease the pain, dizziness, and motion problems that can accompany a concussion. All that said, physical therapy isn’t just for athletes. It can help people with a surprisingly large range of difficulties. A receptionist who fights lower back pain from sitting at a desk all day, a warehouse stocker with a pinched nerve, a senior who needs to improve balance to avoid a fall, or a mom who is tired of putting up with incontinence after childbirth—all of these people could benefit from the help of a physical therapist. There are many specialized types of physical therapists, but they are all trained to analyze your situation and teach you how to improve it with exercises, stretches, and, sometimes, complex equipment. Orthopedic physical therapy helps those who want to stop hurting and start healing after surgery. The musculoskeletal system in our bodies includes muscles, bones, connective tissue, and all the parts of moving joints, like tendons and ligaments. Some common orthopedic physical therapy treatments include joint and spine mobilization, therapeutic exercise, muscle re-education, neuromuscular treatment, electrical muscle stimulation, and dry needling (similar to acupuncture). Physical therapy can even be helpful before surgery, to make sure the muscles and bones are in the best possible shape, giving patients a better chance for a complete and timely recovery. Some therapists specialize in women’s health, solving problems related to the reproductive system and pelvic floor. Some women experience unexplained pelvic pain, the cause of which remains elusive even after extensive testing. Experts say that one of the underlying causes of chronic pelvic pain is myofascial, which means the body’s soft tissue is inflamed and painful. Pelvic physical therapy can help alleviate such pain.

www.womensedition.com

The pelvic floor is a bowl-shaped muscle that holds your bladder, bowel, rectum, and uterus. It’s an important body part! After childbirth, and as we get older, the pelvic floor can weaken. You have probably heard of Kegels, the exercise of contracting and relaxing your floor muscles. This is only one way to work this important muscle system. Your physical therapist can guide you through measured breathing coordinated with exercises like squats, bridges, and lunges to help with pain management, urinary incontinence, pregnancy pain, and constipation. Breast cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation can cause physical and mental stress. Scar tissue; pain in the shoulders, neck, and back; neuropathy; bladder and bowel changes; and lymphedema are just some of the challenges that a physical therapist can address. As a matter of fact, physical therapy can help during all stages of cancer treatment: before surgery, during medical treatment, and after surgery. Your therapist will assess baseline measurements of your shoulders and spine (to help identify impairments during treatment and recovery) and establish an exercise program to keep you on track. After surgery, and during medical treatment, manual therapy helps ease joint pain and muscle stiffness and increases your range of motion. Some physical therapists specialize in lymphatic drainage techniques. Lymphedema is often provoked by a lymph node removal during cancer treatment. The lymphedema blocks the lymphatic vessels, and this can lead to troublesome fluid retention. Manual lymphatic drainage, compression, and specific exercises can help relieve swelling in the arms and legs by moving the lymphatic fluid from your limbs to help keep you comfortable. You may not think of headache as a condition that responds

to physical therapy, but it is! Stretching exercises can help to loosen the tense neck and shoulder muscles that often trigger tension headaches. Therapists also use relaxation techniques, deep breathing, and manual therapy for neck function and correct posture. Even jaw dysfunction can cause a headache—if you’re grinding your teeth, seek help. Lower back pain is a common problem in our stress-filled lives, and physical therapy is an effective way to address it. Though a heating pad on the lower back before exercise or ice packs afterwards are tried and true, they’re not the only ways to go. Electrical stimulation to the lower back muscles can be a good solution, especially to prevent further lumbar problems after surgery. A physical therapist can also develop an exercise program to strengthen your core. Your lumbar spine is dependent on lower back muscles and their support from abdominal muscles. The muscles in the front and back need to be equally strong so that less stress is placed on the spine. Experts think of this as developing a “belt” of muscle around the spinal column, and a physical therapist can show you the best way to go about it. Last, but not least, our feet bear the shock of everything we do all day long. Physical therapy can address everything from plantar fasciitis to collapsed arches so that we can focus on keeping our feet healthy. Strengthening, range of motion, and flexibility exercises help correct what we might not know is wrong until it hurts. If you’re struggling to get back on your feet, or to get up out of your chair, or to do jumping jacks without leaking, or to recover from surgery, seek help from a physical therapist! Your doctor can recommend one. Sources for this article included: mayoclinic.org, harvarduniversity. edu, breastcancer.org, and webmd.com. WE

Sunridge Village Don’t Be Alone—Be Together! By Marge Shoemaker

The past several months have been difficult for everyone. Isolation, even when voluntary, is especially difficult for those of us who are the most social of beings. Omaha retirement community Sunridge Village believes that “even though we are alone, we are together,” and works to address the problem of loneliness in isolation. I recently had the privilege of chatting with residents Marj, Marilyn, Lucille, Julia, Louise, and Barb, to discuss how the pandemic has affected them, how they are coping, and how being at Sunridge Village helps. It’s unanimous! No personal contact with family is the most difficult burden. Marj’s twin greatgrandsons just celebrated their first birthday. “They were tiny things when they were born—barely four pounds,” she recalls. Being born after only 30 weeks of gestation compromised their health. The family shares through Zoom, and there are always pictures, but “I haven’t been able to hold them since,” she says sadly. Marilyn has missed grandchildren’s graduations and a wedding. “Even though we talk with FaceTime, it’s still disappointing.” Louise says she’s lucky because she drives over to her family and the kids set up chairs in the driveway. Julia shares a story about how the staff recently helped her prepare for a trip. “The family was concerned about me getting packed. I was thankful the staff helped give suggestions of what I might need.” Doctor’s visits have been very different lately, as well. Julia had a problem early this spring. “For the first appointment, I went to the office,” she shares. “Since then, I meet with the doctor on Zoom and any meds are delivered to Sunridge.” Barb reports that the teleconferences she’s had with her doctor have gone smoothly, though it’s not the same as being there in person. Marj relates the strangeness of being the only one in the office except staff, recalling how crowded the waiting room used to be. They all appreciate their prescriptions being delivered, but they miss the personal contact of in-person appointments. “We are one big family at Sunridge Village. Staff and residents are looking after each other, just being there when someone is down or has some fun news to share,” says marketing director Michale Kavan. Residents see each other when they go to get their mail or when passing in the hallways. The amenities at Sunridge Village are immense. Sunridge Village features an in-house, live TV cable channel that is used to make announcements, show movies, and telecast live events like bingo, short story readings, exercise classes and live musical entertainment. The have resumed church services, as well as beauty and preventative health services, shares Michale. In addition,

24

craft classes, and some outings and Marketing director entertainment have returned to the social calendar. Even Michale Kavan (far left), though everyone is in their apartments for the most with residents Barbara M., part, residents are still allowed personal freedom to Lucille F., Julia O., Marj S., Louise V., and Marilyn R. come and go from Sunridge to run errands, visit family, and go to doctor appointments. Sunridge has not yet opened the dining room because of distancing restrictions, so meals are delivered to the apartments or residents do can their own cooking with their flex dining program. The fun parties that they are known for are still on hold, explains Michale, in order to maintain a low risk status for the protection of everyone. Residents monitor themselves if they think they may have been exposed to COVID-19. Barb and her daughter had planned to travel to Portugal before the start of COVID-19. Upon their return, the pandemic was underway. “We went through airports in Spain, Portugal, and New York,” she reports. “Many people weren’t wearing masks, so we isolated ourselves for two weeks when we got back.” She also reports that when she goes out, whether for shopping or to get something to eat, “if people aren’t wearing masks, I don’t go in! It’s that simple.” At Sunridge Village, the general attitude is: If you don’t feel good, stay home—we’ll bring what you need to you. Every effort is made to maintain cleanliness. Public areas are sanitized daily, and apartment cleaning follows strict procedures. Sunridge offers online grocery shopping for those who don’t wish to go out. The staff delivers the grocery and other items to the apartments. Business visitors (like me) are screened and must sign in, have their temperature taken, and use hand sanitizer before they ever leave the reception area. At this time, visitors for residents are allowed only in case of emergency. However, Sunridge has a number of outdoor areas where family and friends can sit and visit. Sunridge Village Independent Living Retirement Community is for adults aged 55 years or older. The community is located at 13410 Blondo Street, in Omaha. Visit them online at sunridgeomaha.com or call 402-4960116. “Don’t wait too long,” Louise advises. “Come while you’re still young!” WE

Non-Invasive Fat Reduction A Slimming Solution

By Loretta McCollum

Has staying at home during COVID-19 turned into a COVID 15? Many of us are finding that we’ve gone up a clothing size while we haven’t had access to the gym. Even if you have been able to keep up with your exercise regimen, you might still be looking at fat deposits that just won’t budge. Consider a non-surgical procedure to help you tackle the problem. Heat or cold, light or radio waves, injectables or ultrasound—there’s bound to be a procedure that’s right for you. Though these procedures do not bring high risk of significant side effects, you should still check with your regular doctor before undergoing any procedure. TightSculpting is an option to address fat deposits all over the body. TightSculpting uses a dual-wavelength laser to sculpt and tighten. The first laser heats the fat cells, stimulating metabolism to burn fat. A second laser heats the surface tissue, prompting new collagen production that improves skin elasticity. Treatments take 30 minutes, and most patients undergo three to six sessions for optimum results. Treated skin may be slightly red for a few days, but no downtime is required. Fat cells that have been destroyed will not return. Another device that uses heat to destroy fat cells is truSculpt 3D. This method uses radiofrequency instead of lasers to heat the tissue. Studies have shown that some individuals experienced up to a 24 percent fat loss in just one truSculpt 3D treatment! It may be a

particularly good option for areas with loose skin. Drink plenty of fluids for optimal results. Thermage is a skin-tightening treatment that uses radiofrequency to heat tissue. It can be used on most areas where there is loose skin—even the eyelids. If your lids are looking lopsided, you can tighten up that drooping skin with a single treatment of Thermage. Your eyelids will be symmetrical again for 12–24 months. EMSCULPT is the first technique to employ electromagnetic energy to tone muscle. The electromagnetic waves cause muscles to contract up to 20,000 times per minute, encouraging muscle growth and fat loss. It’s like a workout without the workout! After four 30-minute treatments, patients may gain an average of 16 percent muscle mass and experience a 19 percent reduction in the waistline. Results can be permanent if exercise and proper diet are maintained. EMSCULPT is best for people who are close to their ›››

ideal weight but want to look more defined. You should avoid this treatment if your body contains metal, such as a pacemaker or support rods. Lipo-Light uses LED light therapy to stimulate fat cells into releasing the fat into the body, where it is burned for energy or eliminated naturally. This method is great for the waist, hips, thighs, and upper arms. It also involves physical exercise in order to maintain results. Treatments last about 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of exercise. It’s possible to lose a couple of inches in just one treatment! Be aware that exercise is key to long-lasting results. Lipo-Light also boosts collagen production, helping skin remain elastic. Burning fat isn’t the only way to lose it—you can also freeze it with technology like CoolSculpting or CryoSkin. CoolSculpting uses a small vacuum device, which sucks the skin into an applicator that freezes the fat cells. Frozen cells are then naturally eliminated by the body. Treatments take about an hour, and patients report an average 20 percent loss of fat cells. CryoSkin is a body contouring process that originated in Paris. Like CoolSculpting, CryoSkin treatments freeze fat cells. It’s great for love handles, thighs, and arms. It improves circulation and boosts collagen production, breaking down fat. Treatments last about 20 minutes, and results are visible immediately. Maintenance treatments are performed every six months. However, if you have diabetes or are pregnant, CryoSkin is not the option for you. Ultrasound fat reduction uses sonic waves to break down fat cells, releasing them into the body to be naturally metabolized. This is a good option for reducing the size of fat deposits on the abdomen and buttocks. The destroyed fat cells will not grow back, and results are long-lasting if a healthy weight is maintained. Kybella is an injectable form of deoxycholic acid, a substance that naturally occurs in the body. It breaks down fat cells on contact. It’s very effective in reducing a double chin. Treatment involves multiple injections, and little downtime is required. Typically, patients undergo two to four treatments one month apart. Fat cells that are destroyed will not return. If you’ve developed fat deposits that have overstayed their welcome, consult a physician or aesthetician to find out which option is best for you. Winter Is Coming! Create a Cozy Fireplace Retreat By Robyn V. Powell

Few things are more inviting than the warmth of a roaring fireplace on a cold winter night. Crackling flames and a cozy hearth create a gathering place for family to relax and share stories. If you’re looking to create a focal point in any room, a fireplace is a beautiful way to start. Whether your style is traditional or you prefer a sleek contemporary look, there’s a way for you to introduce this magical element into your living spaces. Return on investment (ROI) should always be a consideration when planning a build or remodel. The National Association of Homebuilders says that 75 percent of homebuyers identify a fireplace as one of the most desirable home features. According to the National Association of Real Estate Appraisers, homeowners can expect to recoup 100 percent of the expenses associated with adding a fireplace and tack on between six and 12 percent of the value of their home upon resale. Now, that’s a solid ROI! Like all design elements, fireplaces have evolved; they are now more versatile than ever before. Whether you’re building a new home or remodeling, fireplace types and styles are as unlimited as your imagination. Modern and contemporary fireplace design is inspired by clean lines and pared-down hearths and mantles, using elements like glass and metal to create a modern feel. Take your modern fireplace to the next level with the incredible beauty and function of fire glass. Designed to amplify fire heat radiation by three to four times that of logs or stone, fire glass is low-

maintenance, eco-friendly, and gaining popularity as an efficient alternative to wood. Updating original fireplaces, or ones that are going unused due to safety concerns, is a growing trend. Tearing out and completely rebuilding a fireplace is sometimes the only way to go, but there’s no denying that it’s an expensive and messy process. Many homeowners are opting for a quicker, cost-efficient alternative for fireplaces that only need cosmetic changes: refacing. Similar to refacing kitchen cabinets with new door fronts, refacing your fireplace with a minimal approach can create a stunning change for far less cost and hassle. With a bit of help from the right professionals, redesigning the entire hearth and surround is possible. Smooth concrete, tile, painted or rustic brick, and granite are just a few options that can breathe new life into an outdated fireplace surround. ›››

New home construction has seen gas overtake wood-burning as the fireplace of choice. Clean-burning gas fireplaces are convenient, low-maintenance, and friendlier to the environment. Advancing technology continues to improve efficiency and overcome design obstacles. Woodburning fireplaces can easily be converted to gas units by installing an insert. The process begins with a professional inspection to ensure the chimney is safe and will accommodate a gas unit. Your home’s existing gas line will need to be extended to reach the fireplace; this job should be done by a qualified fireplace service, an HVAC technician, or a plumber with the proper license to perform gas-line work. An insert equipped with a gas liner flue to the chimney top is placed into the existing fireplace cavity. Installing a fireplace may not take as much space as you think, but people with very small spaces can opt for a ventless version. Fueled by gas or propane, ventless units do not require a flue or chimney, saving both wall and floor space. Limiting the number of penetrations into the house is valuable for saving energy, and ventless units produce no ash or airborne pollutants. The chimney is an important ventilation system that allows toxins, smoke, and dangerous fumes to escape the house. It’s important to understand that both the fireplace and the chimney system must be safe and that they cannot work properly without each other. Whether you have wood-burning or vented gas, annual professional cleanings will catch any problems, improve efficiency, and ensure your family’s safety. Well-maintained brick chimneys can last a century. However, if the mortar joints are not regularly repaired, water can seep between the chimney and the flue lining, causing serious unseen damage like mold, mildew, and rotting wood. The most cost-effective repair to protect and extend the life of a chimney and increase the value of your home is tuckpointing. This is where damaged mortar is removed and replaced with fresh mortar. Hiring the right professionals is key to achieving a fireplace that is beautifully designed and safely built. Visit your local fireplace center showroom to see the latest trends and learn about their in-house design, installation options, and service team. Whether you choose to jump on a trend or opt for a classic, a fireplace will add instant ambience and visual interest to your home. Breast Cancer Care Advancements Are Saving Lives

By Leslie Byrne

Ongoing research offers new ways to detect breast cancer early and treat it successfully. That’s great news, since statistics show that early detection is decreasing breast cancer deaths. However, the numbers are still sobering: In the United States, one in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer. Although the death rate from breast cancer has decreased, over 42,000 American women are expected to die from breast cancer in 2020. It’s important to stay abreast of the latest guidelines for detection options. As researchers learn more about the degree relative with the gene mutation but has not undergone gene testing herself; if she underwent chest radiation therapy between the ages of 10 and 30 years; if she has Li-Fraumeni syndrome, Cowden syndrome, or Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba syndrome; or if she has a first-degree relative with one of those syndromes. Women who are at high risk for breast cancer should talk to their doctor about doing a breast MRI and a mammogram every year, starting at age 30. Women at average risk have the option to start annual mammogram screenings between age 40 and 44. Women of average risk between 45 and 54 years of age should undergo annual mammograms. You may be surprised to learn that women 55 and older in the average risk category can opt to have a mammogram only every other year (or they can continue with annual mammograms). Women diagnosed with breast cancer today have several

disease, best practices change to incorporate new information. For example, you may have heard that women must start having annual mammograms when they turn 40. Is that true? The answer is: Maybe. The best advice depends on an individual woman’s risk level for breast cancer, and current guidelines break down risk further than just by age. For screening purposes, a woman is considered to be at average risk for breast cancer if she has not had breast cancer in the past, does not have a genetic mutation in a BRCA gene, has not had chest radiation therapy, and does not have a strong family history of breast cancer (which means a first-degree relative like a mother, sister, or daughter with breast cancer or a family member who had breast cancer before age 50). A woman is considered at high risk for breast cancer if gene testing confirms a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation; if she has a first-

treatment options, usually chosen based on the type of cancer and how advanced it is. Potential treatments include surgery (when the cancer is physically removed), chemotherapy (when medication shrinks or kills cancer cells), radiation therapy (when high-energy rays kill cancer cells), or hormone therapy (which blocks cancer cells from getting to the hormones they need to grow the cancer). Newer treatments include biological therapy or immunotherapy (when the patient’s immune system helps fight cancer cells). Unfortunately, the side effects of current treatments can make the cancer journey very unpleasant. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, pain, arm swelling, shortness of breath, and skin irritation. In some cases, immunotherapy can be used to control the side effects of other treatments. Work on a breast cancer vaccine is promising. The Mayo Clinic is actively developing a vaccine and reports that could be available within eight years. The vaccine would work by stimulating the body’s immune system to attach to and kill cancer cells. If successful, this vaccine would not only stop the recurrence of breast cancer but might prevent cancer from developing in the first place. As anyone who has undergone surgical treatment for breast cancer can tell you, the removal of the tumor is just the beginning of the healing process. Many women go on to have reconstructive surgery. For earlystage breast cancers, breast-conserving surgery like lumpectomy or partial mastectomy may suffice, though they often result in breasts of different size or shape. To address this issue, many doctors use a technique called oncoplastic surgery. This procedure combines the cancer removal surgery with the reconstructive surgery to restore the breast or breasts. Options for reconstruction include implants or flap reconstruction, in which tissue from another part of the body is used to reconstruct the breast. While most women choose to have some type of reconstruction, some do not. After surgery, physical therapy can improve range of motion and strength, help with the healing process after lymphedema, and reduce pain. Although a diagnosis of breast cancer is always challenging, and a lot goes into recovery, ongoing innovations in early diagnosis and treatment are helping more and more women survive the disease! Smiling With Your Eyes Kindness From Behind a Mask Tiffanie Gregory runs the Lincoln office of Women’s Edition. The signature on her email is: “Have a great and kind day!” I have seen this signature for several months now. Every time I read an email from her, I find myself taking a pause and reflecting on this message. “Kindness is more important than wisdom, and the recognition of this is the beginning of wisdom.” —Theodore Isaac Rubin

By Janet Van deWalle

Waking up in the morning and setting the intent to be a kind person really isn’t that difficult. A great starting place is to walk out the door with a big smile. This sets the tone to project a feeling of kindness and caring that cannot happen if we’re scowling. Yes, we have lots on our minds, lots to do. It is still easier on the body, mind, and spirit to smile instead of scowl. “A warm smile is the universal language of kindness.” —William Arthur Ward

If we are kind to everyone we come into contact with, I believe we could truly change the world. Opening the door for others is a good place to start. When I first met my husband, Manny, he had to “train me” on waiting for him to open doors for me—store doors, car doors, my home door. I was the woman who didn’t need any help, thank you very much! What I learned is that Manny does this for every man, woman, and child he comes into contact with. I literally have seen him race ahead of someone so that he can be the gentleman that he is and be there to open the door. I quickly realized that this wasn’t a sexist thing to do, it was just a kind thing to do. “Politeness is a sign of dignity, not subservience.” —Theodore Roosevelt

A challenge for a lot of us is that, for the time being, we are all wearing masks when we are out in public. What’s a smiling person to do? Stand in front of the mirror and practice smiling with your eyes. My mother told me years ago that the eyes are the windows to the soul. Yes, we have to dig down a little deeper than usual to project a smile with our eyes, but it’s worth it. The benefit for us in all of this is that we will all feel better. We will view ourselves differently. After all, most of us would like to believe that we ARE nice! “Treat everyone with politeness, even those who are rude to you. Not because they are nice, but because you are.” —Anonymous

Communication, Respect, Trust The Building Blocks of Relationships We’re all in relationships. Whenever we deal with other people—with spouses, family, kids, friends, coworkers, neighbors, even shopkeepers—it’s a relationship. What can we do to build and maintain positive relationships? To answer that question, I gathered a few friends for a discussion. We agreed that the most enduring relationships are based on a combination of communication, respect, and trust. It’s important to remember that good communication means different things to different people. Some people prefer to talk in person; others prefer something less direct like written notes, phone calls, or texts. The group agreed that communication is letting others know what you want or how you feel…as plainly as possible…by whichever method you are most comfortable. If we expect others (our kids included) to do something, we should tell them. If you’re unhappy about someone’s behavior, talk to that person about it. People aren’t mind readers! We can’t fix what we don’t realize is broken. Remember, communication goes both ways. We also agreed that respect given merits respect in return. One of the teachers I subbed for left a note saying she thought all the “trouble-makers” were in her class. As soon as our day started, the students raised objections: Mrs. Smith does this first; we don’t do it that way; and so on and so forth. I stepped to the front of the desk. “Because I’m not Mrs. Smith,” I started, “I will probably do a lot of things differently. I expect you to be

By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS

cooperative. What do you expect of me?” Within five minutes of letting them “speak their piece,” we were all working together. Once I listened to what they expected and they knew what I expected, we could respect each other. It’s easier to meet expectations when we know what they are. Open communication and respect work together to build trust. Our friendly group defined trust as not only keeping your word but also expecting the other person to do the same. When we bring our kids up to behave in a certain way, we’ve communicated our expectations. We trust them to act in this manner even when we aren’t around. One of the things I’ve always advocated is teaching our kids to accept responsibility for their choices. When they make mistakes—and they will; that’s how people learn—they will trust that their family is still behind them. In this group of friends, which includes singles, parents, grandparents, and retirees, we share a mutual respect for different ways of thinking. We have different backgrounds and experiences and are at different places in our lives. We listen. We agree to disagree—it keeps things interesting. With open communication, mutual respect, and shared trust, we have strengthened our relationship. We’re good friends! How are your relationships? Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Oncology Associates, P.C. Compassionate Cancer Care By Angella A. Arndt

Have you or a loved one been diagnosed with cancer? If so, you are not alone. The American Cancer Society predicts that the United States will see 1.8 million new cancer cases by the end of 2020. Even though we know it’s fairly common, a cancer diagnosis is still always unexpected and overwhelming. Choosing the right physician and understanding treatment options will ease anxiety and ensure the best care possible. Oncology Associates understands the many effects that cancer has on patients and their families. Their team provides personalized oncology and hematology treatments. They treat patients with all types of cancer and blood disease. Common treatment options include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, drug therapy, and hormonal therapy. Dr. Tim Dorius started his career in business. He earned an undergraduate degree in economics, spent some time abroad, and worked for a small company in energy management before he realized that medicine was where he wanted to spend his career. Dr. Dorius

earned his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma and moved to Omaha to complete an internal medicine residency and hematology/oncology fellowship at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. Dorius is the principal investigator for several clinical research trials at Methodist Hospital. Dr. Dorius says oncology was the right choice for him. “Cancer is the most exciting field of medicine because of the research being done,” he shares.

Dr. Tim Dorius

Women’s Edition offers a very professional and effective format that allows us to get the message out to women (even men) regarding all the services we provide. “Treatments are getting better all the time, especially with the emergence of more targeted therapies.” He initially joined one of the largest oncology practices in the country, but he found that he wanted to be part of a smaller, more intimate practice. “I was familiar with Omaha and its strong medical community,” he recalls. “The quality of care provided in Omaha is better than anywhere else I’ve seen.” Dr. Irina Popa and Dr. James Schwartz complete the physician team at Oncology Associates. Dr. Popa went to medical school in Romania and emigrated to the United States. In addition to patient care, Dr. Popa has a strong interest in research and new treatment options. Dr. Schwartz, an experienced oncologist from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, is the most recent member to join the team. He is heavily involved in research related to gastrointestinal and genitourinary cancers. Cancer is a personal journey, but you don’t have to face it alone. Dr. Dorius believes the approach to treatment is just as important as the treatment itself. “Our job is to get the diagnosis right, give our patients the best options available, and provide compassionate care, but our patients still have a choice.” Not every patient approaches cancer treatment in the same way. “It’s important to provide the right care to meet a patient’s goals. For example, some patients want to pursue aggressive chemotherapy treatments, while others want to maximize their quality of life and take a less aggressive approach.” Dr. Dorius believes that compassion is crucial. “We receive a lot of positive feedback from our patients and their families about our personalized approach and caring staff.” The entire Oncology Associates team takes pride in making

patients feel welcome and supported throughout the treatment experience. Their small but well-positioned practice helps them bring a personal touch without sacrificing quality of care, Dr. Dorius emphasizes. “Our patients get to know their nurses because they see the same person during each visit,” he says, “but we still offer all the services of a large practice because of the resources we have through our affiliation with the Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center.” If you’re choosing a physician for cancer treatment, Dr. Dorius recommends that you ask plenty of questions. When you meet with an oncologist, consider your overall feeling when entering the office and interacting with the physician and staff. Do the staff members listen? Do they take time to answer questions? Are they honest? Are they interested in you as a person? Do they understand your goals? When you’re facing cancer, it’s essential that you feel comfortable with your cancer care team. “We are dedicated to taking care of patients in the right way,” Dr. Dorius concludes. “Even in a tough situation, our patients can still have a good experience when they come through the door. If you are diagnosed with cancer, it becomes part of your life, but it doesn’t need to be your whole life. Many patients are cured, and it’s so rewarding to be part of their journey.” Oncology Associates has two offices in Omaha: at 8303 Dodge Street, Suite 225, and at 515 North 162nd Avenue, Suite 303. Mr. Market Warren Buffett’s Best Friend

Stock market predictions are a dime a dozen, pumped out on a daily basis by marketing departments up and down Wall Street. These departments are staffed with hordes of financial types who hold advanced degrees and rooms full of the biggest computers known to mankind. These forecasts are readably available on the internet for free. Simply go to Google and type in: Get rich quick. Most of these predictions are the results of esoteric calculations spit out by mathematical models that are far above what the investing public can comprehend. Why does Wall Street go to such lengths to make investing seem so complicated? Maybe it’s because they know that there has never been a witch doctor who achieved fame and fortune by simply advising, “Take two and call me in the morning.” According to the father of investment analysis, Benjamin Graham, all of this is a waste of time because “common stocks are subject to recurrent and wide fluctuations in their prices that have no foundation in the underlying economic conditions.” In his book, “The Intelligent Investor,” Mr. Graham states that “there is no basis in logic or experience for assuming that it is possible for either an amateur or professional investor to successfully anticipate market movements.” In his 1987 letter to Berkshire shareholders, Mr. Graham’s most famous student, Warren Buffet, takes these market observations one step further and gives the stock market a human persona he calls “Mr. Market.” Mr. Market is an emotional investor who constantly offers to buy and sell stocks to any interested party. Mr. Market is a tongue-in-cheek recognition of the fact that the market’s pricing actions are usually based on the human emotions of fear and greed rather than rational, calculated reasoning. Mr. Market’s price quotations are usually arbitrary. At times, Mr. Market feels euphoric and can only see the favorable factors affecting the world of finance. When in that mood, he names a very high price to sell his stock because he fears that you will snap up his offer and rob him of potential gains. At other times, he is depressed and can see nothing but trouble ahead for both the economy and the world. On these occasions, he will name a very low price to buy your stock, since he is terrified that you will unload your worthless stocks on him. One thing Mr. Market doesn’t mind is being ignored—he’ll always be back tomorrow, ready to quote you a new, still irrational price. In today’s world of 24/7 financial news, most investors are ill-equipped to deal with the plethora of data that bombard them. As Warren Buffett and Benjamin Graham both advise, there are times when Mr. Market and his minions in the media need to be ignored, though this is easier said than done. The most common measurements of Mr. Market and his moods are the Dow Jones and S&P 500 indexes. Passively

42

investing in the total market is a proven strategy for long-term success that outperforms trying to predict Mr. Market’s mood swings. In the words of the Oracle of Omaha, “If you can’t lick ’em, join ’em.” For years, Mr. Buffett has been an outspoken advocate of the use of index funds by the average investor. Index funds are a type of passive mutual fund investment that track the performance of a specific market benchmark, like the S&P 500 index. They accomplish this by buying and holding the same stocks as the index, in the same proportion as the index. No attempt is made to forecast market movements or respond to changes in stock prices. Because index funds do not trade the stocks in the portfolio, they do not need the services of expensive portfolio managers to further enhance performance. Index funds generally have fees in the 0.1 percent range, while the fees of an actively managed fund are in the range of 1–2 percent. Putting the difference in fees in the investor’s pocket instead of Wall Street’s pocket, and letting it compound over the course of a working lifetime, results in a significantly larger amount of money for the investor when it comes time to retire. In May, Berkshire Hathaway held its first-ever virtual annual meeting. At the meeting, Mr. Buffett shared some of his plans for his estate after he passes to the big board room in the sky. He has instructed his trustees to sell his widow’s portion of his Berkshire Hathaway stock and put it into the Vanguard S&P 500 index fund. You won’t find much stronger evidence than that of a belief in the importance of investing in index funds! Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine Welcome, Dr. Betsy Weedin! By Linda Sutherland

There is a new smiling face at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine, and she is ready to meet your reproductive needs! Dr. Elizabeth “Betsy” Weedin is a Nebraska native who is overjoyed to be practicing reproductive medicine in her home state. She grew up on an acreage outside Waverly, Nebraska, where she developed a keen interest in science and medicine at an early age. When she was about eight years old, she hatched a chicken in her basement with the help of an incubator (and she lovingly raised that chicken to adulthood). Her passion for reproductive medicine was ignited, and she has never looked back. This vibrant young woman was the first in her family to graduate from college. She went on to medical school, after which she completed a residency in general obstetrics and gynecology and a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Dr. Weedin’s enthusiasm for what she does is evident when you speak with her. She is sensitive to the needs of patients who seek out reproductive care and shows them the heartfelt empathy they need. She believes in treating the whole person, not just the specific reproductive issues that a patient may have. Dr. Weedin’s advocacy for the health and wellbeing of her patients is a gift to everyone who visits Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine. She strives to empower her patients to take the steps that may be necessary to achieve a positive reproductive outcome. Her honesty and ability to understand her patients makes her a wonderful addition to the compassionate staff at the practice. People who are facing infertility are often overwhelmed with feelings of fear, anger, and anxiety— after all, they assumed that they would be able to build a family without difficulty whenever they were ready. The realization that they cannot likely comes as a surprise and a disappointment, and it may take some time to come to terms with it. Dr. Weedin understands the courage that it takes to ask for help with this part of life, and she works to set her patients up for success…with building families and with their lives as a whole. Infertility has many causes; in fact, a single case of infertility can have more than one cause. Each patient (or couple) presents as a unique puzzle, and it is Dr. Weedin’s mission to put the puzzle pieces together to provide the best multidisciplinary care available. She does this by using the powerful treatment tools available at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine, while remaining cognizant of providing emotional support to her patients. Honesty is an extremely important attribute in the field of reproductive health and therapy. In her treatment

of infertility, Dr. Weedin finds it valuable to be “very real” with her patients. No smoke and mirrors are required; she feels that optimistic and honest interactions are her most effective tools. Dr. Weedin considers the full spectrum of each patient’s health, including lifestyle, nutrition, exercise, and individual attitudes. She never puts pressure on patients to try any particular treatment, and she finds that the rewards of presenting honest and compassionate information are extensive. When asked about the major influences in her life, Dr. Weedin identifies some people you might expect, including her husband, her family, and the physicians who have been part of her professional training. What you might not expect is how much she has been influenced by her patients over the years. She has learned so much from her patients about hope, empowerment, love, and courage. This fuels her, she says, and gives her the driving force and desire to come to work every day. The team of physicians and staff at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine offer state-of-theart, compassionate care for all who seek their guidance and services. Treatments for infertility vary widely and can include a combination of self-care, medication, egg freezing, and medical procedures using assisted reproductive technology like intrauterine insemination (IUI), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Their team is here to analyze your reproductive health and work hand in hand with you to find the best way to a lasting and positive outcome. If you need reproductive assistance to start or build your family, you can be confident that Dr. Weedin will use the full spectrum of treatments that they offer to help you reach your goals in the treatment of infertility…and she’ll do it all with the compassion and honesty that you’ll need to help you navigate this challenging path. The Green Thumb

Bulb Gardens The Beautiful, Bountiful World of Bulbs

By Linda Sutherland

People have been planting bulbs in the ground since the first time tulips sprang forth in the spring many centuries ago. Not familiar with bulbs? They’re amazing! A bulb is created by a plant sending its nutrients below the ground at the end of the growing season. It stores energy and food over the winter. While other plant varieties go dormant in the winter, bulbs are actively growing underground. The following spring, just when you think you will never see another flower, the energy is ready for the plant to regrow and flower again. We have all seen crocuses or daffodils peeking up through the snow in early spring—these are the earliest of bulb bloomers! There are also many more bulb varieties to enjoy. Any seasoned gardener can tell you that bulbs are an amazing way to extend the colorful season in your garden. Some bulb species require planting in the spring and some need to be planted in the fall, but they all demand only minimal upkeep and provide months of continuous blooming and beauty, year after year. You can intermingle bulbs with other perennial plants. They look stunning in rock gardens and they are excellent border plants, but there is nothing like giving bulbs a garden of their very own. They bloom from early spring to late autumn, providing a colorful and abundant show throughout the growing season.

When you decide that you need a bulb garden in your life, a little research can make for a smoother planting experience. Packaged bulbs will generally come with a planting chart to tell you when and where to plant them, as well as how deep to dig and how far to space them. I recommend digging your hole a little deeper than the recommended planting depth on the chart. For maximum effect and drama, space bulbs close together so that they bloom in groups. For gardening success, you must always know the amount of sun your choices require and plant them accordingly. A word of caution: Some bulbs can’t over-winter in the ground in colder regions. Canna lilies, caladiums, dahlias, and gladioli must be dug up in late fall and stored in a cool, dry place for the winter. They are re-planted in the spring for optimum gorgeousness. If that sounds like too much work, you

can still have a bounty of beauty with a bulb garden‌just be sure to steer clear of these varieties. Most summer-flowering bulbs are planted in the spring once the soil can be worked. Some choices for summer flowering bulbs include iris, begonias, elephant ear, cannas, gladioli, and dahlias (remembering to make your choice based on whether or not you want to dig up bulbs in the late fall). Spring-flowering bulbs such as allium, lilies, tulips, hyacinths, and daffodils are planted in the fall before the ground freezes. Generally, the larger the bulb is, the higher the quality (also, the higher the price). Your local nursery will have a plethora of choices in the fall. Bulb catalogs can also have great deals; some even offer a garden plan with their recommendations, complete with diagrams for planting! You may think of bulb gardening as an outdoor activity, but indoor bulb gardens are becoming a thing. With patience, the perfect bulbs, and the right container, you can literally force bulbs to be your living garden in the winter. Amaryllis, paperwhites, daffodils, and hyacinths are lovely choices for indoor bulb gardens. Some varieties of hyacinth will need to be pre-chilled for at least six weeks before planting. Make sure you always check the health of your bulbs before planting. (This is true for outdoor planting, as well.) Their appearance should be firm, unblemished, and plump, not bruised, moldy, or shriveled. Add a small amount of gravel to the bottom of the container. Place your bulb on top of the gravel and add some soil to anchor the bulb. Water the bulb sparingly and place it in a sunny spot. Then, wait (patiently, of course) for the magic to begin. There is something comforting about knowing that you can start a garden now that will continue to bloom through the coming years. We all are familiar with that endless winter feeling that comes when February and March roll around, the feeling that winter will never end and that we will never, ever see any signs of life or greenery again. Then, like a miracle, precious flowers pop their beautiful little heads out of the last snow. We know that spring is coming and that all will be well. Accessibility-Safety-Convenience Aging in Place

By Linda Barnes

Many seniors are proactively deciding where and how they’d like to live out their later years. They choose and prepare for as much comfort and independence as possible. With the number of Americans aged 65 and over projected to reach 70 million by 2030, businesses and services are gearing up to facilitate aging in place. What is “aging in place”? The CDC defines it as “the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level.” Essentially, it means living in a place of your choosing that is set up to handle whatever issues aging might bring. For some, aging in place may mean making modifications to their existing home in order to remain there. Others may choose to downsize to a smaller home or apartment with special features designed for seniors. In some cases, these apartments or condos may be in communities designed specifically for aging residents. Aging in place means anticipating the inevitable changes that come with age and putting in place solutions to ensure safety and accessibility. Other considerations may include convenience to needed services and opportunities for social interaction. We never know just what the future holds, but some changes that accompany aging are predictable. Mobility issues, declining vision, diminished agility, and decreased hearing are common examples. Few existing homes offer accommodations needed to face these challenges.

Luckily, a host of professionals are specially trained to assist with planning and implementing needed modifications. Many builders and remodelers possess expertise in universal design, which makes homes attractive, accessible, safe, and usable by people of all abilities. Certification as an Aging in Place Specialist involves advanced training and proficiency for occupational therapists, builders, and contractors. It enables them to assist seniors in making choices that allow them to age in place. Modifications to an existing home or features to consider when building a new home include zero-step entries, additional lighting, main floor laundry, grab bars in bathrooms, walk-in showers or tubs, and doorways, hallways, and kitchens wide enough to accommodate a walker or wheelchair. Covered entrances, raised toilets, and easyto-use knobs and switches are age-friendly, as well. As strength and balance deficiencies develop, seniors are more likely to fall…and they’re more likely to experience fractures if they do. With a higher risk for falls, many elements are designed for safety. Additional handrails, firmly attached floor coverings, or even

www.womensedition.com

a stairlift can provide safer navigation. Even with the cost of remodeling, remaining in one’s home often involves less expense than moving to a retirement facility. Many seniors wish to remain in their family home and can do so with modifications and assistance with yard and home maintenance. Others may be happier in a retirement community without the responsibilities of maintaining a house and grounds. Some seniors will eventually need the skilled nursing care they can only get in an assisted living facility, and that may not be the best moment to move to a new home. Here, the concept of continuing care might be beneficial. In this situation, a facility provides different levels of care in the same location: independent living, assisted living, and long-term care. Independent living works well for those who can manage their own care. This is often a comfortable apartment with a compact kitchen. Residents may choose to do their own cooking or have community meals with other residents. Amenities, planned activities, and events help keep everyone engaged. When more support is required with daily activities, an assisted living arrangement will provide for those needs. Accommodations are also typically apartments, but trained staff provide help with such things as bathing, reminders, toileting, personal care, and housekeeping. Many of the same activities and amenities are available as with independent living. Such communities are likely to include plenty of outdoor space. Activities may focus on hobbies or personal interests, while others may include transportation to local shopping or entertainment. Spiritual needs are addressed, as well. The great advantage of a continuing care retirement community is that one can move from independent to assisted living while staying within the community. It might be just down the hall or to another floor. In a similar way, if skilled nursing becomes necessary, one moves to a specialized wing or perhaps another building on the same campus. It provides a sense of stability and supports social contact to stay within a community that is familiar. We can’t prevent aging, but if we plan ahead for it, we can maximize our independence and our ability to live as we choose. No matter where you want to age, a little foresight and planning can ensure that you get to choose the place. Cures for Cabin Fever Unleash Your Creativity

By Angella A. Arndt

If you’re feeling restless from spending so much time at home this year, you’re certainly not alone. What a great time to explore new interests! When you spend all your free time at home, crafts and hobbies offer an opportunity to immerse yourself in creativity, have fun, and find an activity that your family can enjoy together. Sewing has seen a resurgence this year due to the demand for reusable face masks. Interest in recycling clothing and creating personalized fashion has also contributed to its rise in popularity. Not interested in making clothing? Consider creating stuffed animals or decorative pillows or customizing totes with embroidery. Quilting is also popular, and sewing machines really cut down the time it takes to make an heirloom-quality quilt. Whether your tastes are modern, traditional, or artsy, there is a quilting style for you. Sewing and quilting provide stress relief, improve hand-eye coordination, and help fight dementia. Your local fabric stores, quilt shops, and sewing machine stores are great resources for classes and materials. If you have ever gazed at a painting and wondered what it would be like to create one, now is the perfect time to give it a try. Your local craft or art supply store can provide everything you need: paper or canvas, brushes, and paint. Give them a call to talk through paint options and find out whether you want to try acrylics, oil paints, or watercolors. Find inspiration from household items like plants,

food, and vases or focus on the beauty of nature outside your door. Painting improves concentration and critical thinking skills, sharpens fine motor skills, provides relaxation, and promotes creativity. If you’re interested in instruction, ask the staff at the craft store or check with local art organizations. Local artists may offer personal online instruction. How would you like to turn a lump of clay into a piece of art or a functional dish? If you like getting your hands dirty, pottery may be for you. It’s possible to create pottery pieces in the comfort of your home. All you need is clay, a table with a good light source, a few tools, and shelves for storage. Pottery provides a creative outlet, improves focus, alleviates stress, and boosts creativity. Hobby shops, craft stores, pottery studios, and art studios can get you started. Scrapbooking is a great way to celebrate and document significant moments for future generations. pages with decorative paper and stickers. Scrapbooking promotes the preservation of family history, encourages creativity, and creates a sense of community. You can find supplies and ideas at scrapbooking stores, hobby shops, and craft stores. If you like to express yourself with jewelry, try designing and creating your own jewelry at home. You’ll need some specialty tools such as pliers, tweezers, and wire cutters. Depending on the type of jewelry, you will also need items like beads, gemstones, gold and silver, and metal wire. Your workspace can be as simple as your kitchen table as long as you have good lighting. Create unique jewelry pieces that embrace your style and personality. Custom jewelry also makes a great gift! Find inspiration and supplies at a local jewelry supply store or craft shop. Photography is a great way to preserve images of special moments or places in your life. All that’s required is a camera and your imagination. Photography is good for the brain, as learning new skills exercises your brain and improves memory. Exploring landscapes has the added benefit of providing exercise. Express your creativity through different lighting, angles, and exposure settings. If you want to learn more about photography techniques, local camera stores and community colleges likely offer classes. Spending more time at home this year also means eating more at home. Home cooking and baking are creative outlets that reduce stress, improve self-esteem and focus, and produce delicious results! Have fun replicating favorite restaurant recipes, exploring different cultural recipes, and involving your family in the kitchen. Cooking at home can save you money, give you more control over your nutrition, and promote family bonding. Community colleges, culinary stores, and some restaurants offer cooking classes if you want to refine your cooking skills. Hobbies and crafts are wonderful outlets to embrace your inner child and immerse yourself in creativity. The possibilities are virtually endless! Try something you’ve seen here, or get involved in something else that interests you, like brewing beer at home, making birdhouses out of natural materials, creating stained glass masterpieces— whatever you choose! If you’re ready to have some fun (aren’t we all?), get started by unleashing your creativity at home! Safety Takes the Top Prize Choosing Your 2021 Vehicle

By Brennan Hallock

Safety has always been a high priority for drivers and vehicle manufacturers. In fact, many vehicles are designed with safety as the highest priority. This may sound obvious, but it can be more challenging than you think. For one thing, safety regulations change almost every year, and that’s just in the United States! Manufacturers sell their vehicles in numerous countries, and these governments each have their own safety regulations. In order to maintain a customer base in each country, manufacturers have to keep up with continually tightening restrictions to make sure their vehicles are highly recommended for keeping drivers and passengers safe. It’s not like there’s no reason to enforce safety regulations in the auto industry—we all want to be able to commute to work or go on a road trip without spending undue time worrying about injury. We want to know that our vehicle will prevent driver error from causing an accident in as many scenarios as possible. Even more importantly, we want to feel confident that if we do end up in an accident, the vehicle will do everything it can to make sure we are able to walk away. This is why we should take into consideration several specific safety features when purchasing a new vehicle. Some of the top safety features that you should look for in a new vehicle include adaptive cruise control, which locks on to any vehicles ahead and keeps a safe distance between the two cars; automatic emergency braking, which brakes in the case of a potential collision; lane departure warning/ lane keep, which warns you if the car wanders outside the designated lane; blind spot detection, which warns you if something enters your blind spot; and rear-view camera, which shows a 180-degree backward view for when you are backing up. Some relatively new safety features are already starting to become standard, including safety exit assist, which prevents doors from being opened while the car is moving, and facial recognition software, which monitors the driver and sends an alert when the driver doesn’t appear to be paying attention to the road. There are a number of ways to determine whether your vehicle rates high in the safety department. Some important ones to check include the insurance industry crash test ratings, government crash test ratings, electronic stability control, rollover resistance, antilock brake system (ABS), accident avoidance, air bags, safety belt features, head restraints, and child safety. Vehicle shopping can be daunting—it’s a big purchase that you don’t make very often. It can help to have an overview of some vehicles that might fit your needs. Let’s check out a few of 2021’s top-rated vehicles regarding safety (and their approximate price ranges).

First off, consider Subaru. The Legacy ($23,000) and the Outback ($28,000) are well known for their rugged safety profiles. The 2020 Subaru Legacy won the Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and the 2021 version comes with even more safety features. These include steering responsive headlights, rear seat belt reminders, traction control system, ABS, blind spot detection with lane change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic braking. Honda brings us the Sensing safety features, which are now standard on the Honda Odyssey ($33,000) and across the lineup. Features include automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning, lanekeep assist, and adaptive cruise control. Toyota has updated their safety features for the upcoming Camry model ($25,000), and some of these features are impressive. They help the vehicle detect a bicyclist in daytime and a pedestrian even in lowlight conditions, help detect cars and pedestrians at intersections when the driver is making a left turn, include automated emergency braking in certain conditions, and include adaptive cruise control. Safety features that were once restricted to high-end Chevrolet models are now being added as standard to all models. Such features include automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane-keep assist, forward collision alert, auto high beams, and following distance indicator. You’ll find these features on the 2021 Chevy Traverse ($30,000). The Kia Telluride ($32,000), which is the top-rated 2021 vehicle overall by several auto websites, is not lacking on safety features. These include automatic emergency braking and warning, blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert and avoidance, lane keeping and lane following, safe exit assist, and rear occupant alert. As you can see, vehicle manufacturers know we have auto safety in mind when we consider our new purchases. Their 2021 lineups demonstrate that they’re stepping up to meet the safety challenges of today’s drivers. Enterprising Ideas

Simply BeYOUtiful Sharing the Gift of Beauty By Jackie Byers

Mellisa Karel is a Nebraska girl, born in Sterling and now living in Gretna with her husband and two young sons. Most days, you can find her at Simply BeYOUtiful, subtly transforming faces inside Aislinn Medical Spa. “After earning my first degree, I was a nutritionist for nine years,” she shares, “and I still use that knowledge in preparing healthy meals for my family.” In 2010, Mellisa decided to expand her skills and earned a degree in dental hygiene at UNMC. “My dental hygiene degree allows me to be at ease when working on peoples’ faces,” she points out. “I have no problem using needles to help people! I know my clients will benefit from my efforts.” Her interest in makeup techniques led Mellisa to the next step on her career path: 300 credit hours at Capitol School of Hairstyling and Esthetics. During her study, she developed new skills in the areas of facial massage, dermaplaning, facial peels, and other techniques designed to enhance the appearance of her clients’ skin. “My studies always begin with personal interests,” she notes. “As I learn a new skill, I try it on my own face first. That way, I can fully explain the experience to my clients during a preliminary consultation. Having tested each technique using myself as the guinea pig, I know I can produce results that look right and will enhance my client’s appearance in a subtle way.” Mellisa next wanted to learn about the advantages of permanent makeup. She found a licensed educator in Council Bluffs who inspired her. She worked with that instructor one-on-one, using live models. “What I learned was totally worth the commute across the river!” she recalls. Testimonials on the Simply BeYOUtiful Facebook page praise Mellisa as “meticulous. She gets excellent results in a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere and a spotless, germ-free environment.” Mellisa would agree that “meticulous” is an important part of her aesthetic strategy. “I’m a bit of a perfectionist,” she says. “No matter what I am doing—brows, eyes, lips, or the entire face—I take my time.” Mellisa is an expert at taming wild brows with microblading. If the brow line is faded because of aging or hair loss, her blading techniques can restore it. “It is a matter first of choosing the right shade,” she relates. “Then, when the client is numbed, the brow can be replaced, following the natural brow line.” In some cases of hair loss, the client’s brows are missing entirely. “Some clients bring in a photo that shows the brows as they were, both the shape and the color.” Mellisa can also depend on the contours of the facial bones to show where the brows should be. “Restoring the face’s natural look is always a priority.”

54

October 2020

Mellisa has one particularly heartwarming video posted about a contest she held for cancer survivors. The contest winner enjoyed a microblading procedure. Seeing her new brows for the first time, the client said, “Oh, I like that,” over and over, finally adding, “They look so natural.” With any facial procedure, Mellisa recommends maintaining a natural look. “When I am counseling a client before I apply permanent makeup, I stress the importance of keeping the appearance natural. Fads come and go, but natural beauty is lasting—it never goes out of style.” Her strategy is to enhance a client’s look, not emphasize it. “I want clients to be totally pleased with the final results, not shocked when they look in the mirror.” Permanent eyeliner is another popular procedure. According to Mellisa, “Some clients only want the top lid; some want top and bottom lids.” The goal is always a natural look. If a client wants dramatic cat’s eyes for a gala evening, Mellisa notes, that’s best achieved with regular makeup, not a permanent procedure. When it comes to permanent lip color, Mellisa advises that lighter shades work best. As with eyeliner, dramatic looks should be temporary. Permanent makeup should be reserved for the look a client wants on an everyday basis. Mellisa brings her skills as a dental hygienist to her clients’ teeth. “So many foods can discolor teeth! Coffee, tea, red wines—even healthy fruits and vegetables like blueberries and beets, which are good for nourishment, are not easy on tooth color.” One of the other services Mellisa provides is teeth whitening, which can be done in one simple appointment. It is recommended that clients have their teeth professionally cleaned prior to whitening. Results vary from one to four shades whiter teeth than when Mellisa started. If you’re ready to permanently enhance your natural beauty, call Mellisa Karel at 402-690-4207. You can also make an appointment by calling 402-3972300. Simply BeYOUtiful is located in Gretna at 818 Village Square, inside Aislinn Medical Spa. WE

The Good Life

Insurance Protection Coverage with Confidence

By Maria Harding

I recently purchased a well-organized guide to personal finance for my son. I had read an earlier edition of the same book years ago and found it to be very informative. It begins with some of the most crucial information right in chapter one, which is called “Insure Yourself Against Financial Ruin.” That’s right—insurance. Before even considering wealth-building strategies, the respected financier who wrote this book emphasizes that, without appropriate coverage, you and your family could face financial ruin. Health insurance should be your top priority. There is currently no federal mandate to have health coverage, though many states will issue tax penalties if you do not have it. Most importantly, it could be catastrophic to be without it. Without insurance, a single major medical expense or illness could destroy everything you have worked so hard for. If your employer offers health insurance, that is likely your most affordable option, as your employer pays part of your premium. If you want or need to shop for your own health insurance, working with a broker can save you time; these professionals are familiar with a variety of reliable plans and network types. Health care costs come from two angles: monthly premiums and out-of-pocket expenses. Both are important to consider when deciding if a plan fits your budget and medical needs. A broker can help you determine if your doctor, specialist, or prescription medications will be covered by various plans. Children can remain on their parents’ health insurance policy until age 26, regardless of where they live or their marital status. An insurance broker can advise you of the best options for your family. In some cases, children qualify for health insurance through a state-run option like CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program). Insuring your home and your belongings is important whether you own a home or rent. As a homeowner, it is also your responsibility to insure against injury and accidents that may occur on your property. In some cases, your lender may mandate the amount of coverage you need so that it adequately covers at least the amount of the mortgage. As a renter, you aren’t responsible for the structure of the home, but consider all of your possessions inside. Could you truly afford to replace every item of furniture and stitch of clothing in the event of a total loss? Some renters’ policies also cover loss of use—that is, if you lose access to the building and need temporary lodgings. It is always tempting to choose the policy with the lowest monthly premium, but you should carefully evaluate whether you could comfortably pay the deductible in the event of a loss. You might photograph valuable items such as art, musical instruments, and jewelry. Your agent can help determine if these items need special riders. Your agent will also need to know about any business use of the home, as that may require specific coverage. Most states require drivers to have liability insurance,

56

October 2020

which covers property damage or injury to others if you are found to be at fault in an accident. Collision insurance covers damage to your car if you are involved in a traffic accident, regardless of who was at fault. Comprehensive insurance covers damage to your car apart from traffic accidents (for example, destructive hail or theft). Many additional types of vehicle coverage can be added to cover such things as towing and roadside assistance, being hit by underinsured drivers, rental reimbursement, and more. If you have a spouse or dependents, life insurance is important to have. Life insurance helps protect your loved ones from the loss of your earnings when you pass away. Term life insurance pays only if your death occurs during the term of the contract, usually somewhere from one to 30 years. Whole Life insurance, on the other hand, provides money to your beneficiaries no matter how old you are when you die. Every family’s situation is unique. An insurance professional can explain Term and Whole Life options in detail as well as evaluate variables like how long your family would require assistance, whether a family member has special needs, your debt-to-savings ratio, and so on. Working with an insurance professional gives you the peace of mind that your coverage is comprehensive. These advisors have the experience and training to help you think of any eventuality and evaluate risks. Ask about discounts that may be available to you. Many auto policies take safe driving habits and good report cards (for teen drivers) into consideration. Homeowners can receive discounts for structure upgrades or safety features like deadbolts. Having more than one kind of policy through one company almost always gives you “bundling” discounts. One thing is certain—no one can afford to go without insurance coverage. Dry Cleaning

How and Why Should You Go Dry?

By Mary Schafer

Great clothes can help you look and feel like a million bucks, so it makes sense to treat your wardrobe as an investment. Did you realize that protecting your clothes can be as simple as going to your dry cleaner? In fact, experts say that dry cleaning can make a big difference in keeping your clothes looking newer longer. That’s because dry cleaning technology removes stains and ground-in dirt that can cause fiber abrasion, yellowing, and other problems. Today’s professional dry cleaners can be considered your own personal clothing care specialists. They’re highly trained to keep your cashmeres and silks looking beautiful. They’re also skilled at cleaning your suede and leather garments. You can have your shirts laundered and pressed too. Plus, many dry cleaners offer minor repairs and alterations. They can even take care of your household items like draperies and feather pillows. In order to protect your wardrobe investment, it pays to know that dry cleaning helps dissolve grease and oil in a way that water cannot. Natural fibers such as wools and silks dry clean beautifully, but if you wash them in water, they might distort. shrink, or lose color. Synthetic fibers like polyester also respond well to dry cleaning, whereas they might retain oily stains if you wash them in water. Frequent dry cleanings are said to extend the life of your clothes because they remove food, beverage, and perspiration stains that might be invisible to the eye. Fortunately, using your local dry cleaner has never been more convenient. Some cleaners offer free storage of your offseason

wardrobe. Regardless of if your home storage is tight or not. free storage at your local dry cleaner is an attractive option. Here’s how it works: At the end of winter, you drop off your sweaters and coats to be cleaned. Then when the weather gets cold again, just stop in to pick them up.You can do the same with your summer clothes too. Typically, your clothing will be stored in a vault with a highly regulated temperature and humidity to protect items from insects, fire, mildew, and other harmful conditions. Another great service many dry cleaners offer is pickup and delivery; some even do it for free. These dry cleaners will pick up your clothes from your home in an “express bag” that notes your cleaning instructions. After your clothes are cleaned, they’re returned to your home. Just think of all the time you could save by crossing “go to the cleaners” off your to-do list every week. Experts agree that newer technology has made dry cleaning more ›››

effective and affordable than in the past. One organization that’s dedicated to industry advances is the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI), an international trade association for garment care professionals. It has been around since 1883, and represents more than 10,000 retail dry cleaning facilities in the United States alone. According to the DLI, the practice of dry cleaning dates back to ancient times. During the evolution of early laundering, lye, and ammonia were used, along with a type of clay, to absorb soils and grease from clothing. Credit for the first dry cleaning business goes to a Paris store in the 1840s. Since fluids are used in dry cleaning, the process isn’t actually “dry” at all. All dry cleaning machines function basically the same and consist of the holding tank, pump, filter, and cylinder or wheel. To begin, the garment is placed in the cylinder or wheel. The solvent, which is stored in the holding tank, is then pumped through the machine. Solid impurities are trapped by the filter. When the cycle is complete, warm air is circulated through the cylinder to vaporize any solvent that’s left on the clothes. Many of us opt to dry clean our professional or special-occasion types of clothes. Those items are typically made of finer fabrics and finishes than perhaps our weekend at-home clothes. Although you may be tempted to wash your “dry clean only” items at home, please resist. If you ignore the fabric care tag, you run the risk of permanently ruining your clothing and shrinking or snagging your beautiful fabric. Once fabrics have been damaged by incorrect cleaning, there’s usually very little your professional dry cleaner can do to fix the problem. Since stains can be divided into two major categories, solvent-soluble stains and water-soluble stains. it can be very risky to experiment at home with an “all-purpose” stain removal product. In addition to cleaning our skirts, shirts, pants, and dresses, dry cleaners stay busy with commercial services as well. Businesses often need dry cleaners for things like upholstery and draperies, linens (such as tablecloths and napkins). rugs, and more. Some cleaners offer on-site visits to companies so they can better clean items like chair pads and pillows. Many cleaners also specialize in the preservation of wedding gowns, christening gowns, and other family heirlooms. Your local professional dry cleaner will know exactly what steps to take to keep it looking new for seasons to come. Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You Deka Lash

By Maria Harding

It is said that the eyes are the windows to the soul. They speak volumes about our personality, energy, and honesty. When we move confidently through the world, our gaze is direct, and we project an inner light. The aesthetic professionals at Deka Lash aim to enhance the natural beauty of the eyes, empowering their clients to embrace the day with spirited poise. Owner Moriah Brookshier was drawn to Deka Lash for three reasons—the operational model it utilizes, the ongoing support each studio receives from corporate headquarters, and, most importantly, the emphasis it places on building clients’ confidence. The company’s mission reflects Moriah’s priorities as a woman and as a business owner. “People come in here, and we don’t know their life story or what kind of day they’ve had,” she says. “Our goal is to have them leave feeling better than when they arrived.” When you come into the bright and modern studio, you will be warmly greeted. “Our Lash Artists are our receptionists, and they establish that personal touch right off the bat,” says Moriah. The Lash Artists at Deka Lash offer more than just a welcoming smile, however. All employees are licensed and have undergone an additional four weeks of training to meet the company’s high education standards. They take plenty of time to answer questions, gather important medical information, and review each client’s lash styling goals. Clients are then invited to relax in an ergonomic bed that is partially screened, allowing for semi-privacy without impeding a sense of openness or the light needed for proper technique. Deka Lash uses superior quality synthetic lashes in singles or fans. Extensions attach to the existing lashes, so fans give the appearance of greater density as well as length. “We don’t ever want to damage the natural lash itself,” Moriah says. “The health and safety of the natural lash is our first priority.” Deka Lash works with a limited number of reputable manufacturers for all of its cruelty-free products. This enables the company to control the quality and consistency of its brand as well as the results it provides to its clients. Deka Lash pays attention to product trends and responds to feedback from clients and Lash Artists about new products. “We have the confidence and the know-how to stop and bring in a new product if there’s ever something that we feel isn’t working,” Moriah points out. “We’ve done it before.” Customizable lash style options give clients many possibilities from which to choose. Within the streamlined categories, clients can be very specific about the shape, length, and density of lashes that

62

October 2020

they desire. Lash lifts are also available to curl naturally straight lashes or unfurl tightly curled lashes. This process is less damaging Owner Moriah Brookshier than using a manual eyelash curler. Lower lash and eyebrow tinting is available, as are some nontraditional eyelash colors. “Right now, we have blue, red, and pink,” shares Moriah. “Blue for Creighton, red for the Huskers, and pink for breast cancer awareness.” At Deka Lash, your Lash Artist will review all of the aftercare guidelines for your extensions or lash lifts, recommend quality care products, and schedule your follow-up appointment. We typically lose three to five lashes per day, so you can expect your eyelash extensions to look fabulous for about two weeks. Lash extensions should not be exposed to water for the first 24 to 48 hours. Steam and intense heat should be avoided for the duration of your extensions, as should beauty products containing oil. This is where your Lash Artist’s product recommendations can really save the day. “Our care products are specifically formulated for lash extensions,” explains Moriah. “Some products out there actually break the bond of the medical-grade adhesive used to attach the extension, so we do a lot of education around that.” Membership plans are available, making maintenance and aftercare products more affordable for everyone. Moriah emphasizes that empowering all women is a company priority. “Having vibrant lashes may give clients a boost of confidence before they go nail a job interview or give a presentation in front of the executive board or have a really hot date Saturday night,” she says. “Yes, we do looks for red carpet events, but it’s really about the everyday woman.” You never know what you’ll accomplish with the confidence of great lashes! Explore all that Deka Lash has to offer at dekalash. com or visit the studio at 14505 West Maple Road to see what they’re all about. To make an appointment, call 402-575-9193. Moriah says she wants all of us to “wake up feeling like, ‘I’ve got this!’” Beautifying the appearance of your eyes’ fluttery frame may very well change how you see the world! WE

Positive Perspective

Are You Thriving or Surviving? Time for New Habits How are you today? Are you smiling? Are you calm? Are you at peace? Are you looking forward to your day? Are you making the decision to do things that make you happy? I ran across this Abraham/Hicks quote and I felt the inspiration to share it with you: “I’m going to be happy. I’m going to skip. I’m going to be glad. I’m going to smile a lot. I’m going to be easy. I’m going to count my blessings. I’m going to look for reasons to feel good. I’m going to dig up positive things from the past. I’m going to look for positive things where I stand. I’m going to look for positive things in the future. It is my natural state to be a happy person. It’s natural for me to love and to laugh. This is what is most natural for me. I am a happy person!” —Abraham/Hicks It feels to me as if the goal of “happiness” has been forgotten by a lot of us lately. It’s as if we have been sucked into this vortex of worry, of anger, of fear. It’s as if we have all moved into survival mode. I keep hearing people say things like, “I just need to make it through the day, through the month, through 2020!”

By Janet Van deWalle

“The habits you create to survive will no longer serve you when it’s time to thrive. Get out of survival mode. New habits. New life.” —Anonymous Getting comfortable with the concept of merely surviving is not serving any of us very well. It’s as if we have all hunkered down and simply want to exit 2020 as soon as possible. I admit, I have found myself on this path over the last several months. It’s as if I have been a sheep following the flock. However, after all this time, I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore! I know I have no control over anyone or anything besides myself. I know that I have a choice in how I’m going to lead my life. I know that I can make a decision to seek my own joy and discover my own peace, and that is what I’m doing. Trying to “wish away” 2020 because of the drama that we have all been swept up in doesn’t feel good anymore. Instead, I will follow my to-do list every day: “My to-do list for today: Count my blessings, practice kindness, let go of what I can’t control, listen to my heart, be productive but calm, just breathe.” —A Girl’s Guide to Loving Life Let’s all breathe…and be happy.
