“Top o’ the mornin’ to ya!”
Points of Interest
The other morning, when I stepped outside, it smelled like spring. I have lived here my entire life, and I can sense when the seasons begin to turn. It’s like this instinctual part of my brain goes on alert, watching for any sign of the earth waking up. The next day, I heard birds chirping in the morning. Another sign! The following day, I have to admit, the temperature took a major plunge into the single digits. It didn’t really bother me, though. I knew that the frigid temperatures would soon be over. Manny and I have decided that we are going to attend Father Flanagan’s St. Patrick’s Day parade in the Old Market on Saturday, March 12. The last time I went to a parade was when I was a teenager, but I forwarded the press release about the parade to Manny right away. We have made a commitment to one another to “get out of our routines” and do things that we haven’t done together before. The parade is coming off a two-year absence, and we thought it would be a good time for us to start a new tradition. We both know that it could be a wicked cold day…but we are committed. Besides, we have cold-weather gear to keep us warm. Creating new traditions in our newly wed life has been a challenge. Manny and I have been married for just over two and a half years. In 2019, Manny’s father passed. In 2020, we endured the pandemic lockdown. In 2021, it’s been about adjusting to the world’s “new normal.” Now we’re into the third year, trying to adjust to life, to one another, and to the challenges of the pandemic. I have learned so much about myself and about Manny. We are making progress on being partners in our marriage. We are learning how to communicate with one another. Our love is growing every single day. Being newlyweds, of course, we have challenges and conflicts. We keep remembering how much we love one another and continue to learn about one another. Creating new traditions is a great way to learn about those you love. Doing the “same old, same old,” day in and day out, is no way to sustain and grow a healthy relationship. Let’s check out of our routine, check into new adventures, and welcome the warm weather we all know is coming! One more thing…Happy birthday, Manny! His birthday is March 8, and I am so pleased that we can celebrate it together. We’re going to have fun!

March Madness Game Day Wings Mix 1/2 cup of Hoisin sauce, 1/2 cup of soy sauce, 1/4 cup of plum sauce, 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar, and 4 peeled cloves of garlic. (If you can’t find these sauces in your grocery store, use a jar of Korean BBQ sauce instead.) Put the ingredients in a zip-top bag along with 2 pounds of wings. Refrigerate overnight. Spread the wings on a rack on a cookie sheet. Bake for 60–90 minutes at 375 degrees, turning several times. Serve with cut-up veggies and blue cheese or ranch dressing. Dreaming of Vacation? Anticipation is Half the Fun!
By Holly Bell
In the Midwest, we tend to be homebodies in winter. By the time warm temperatures greet us, we are bursting with the need to shake our cabin fever. When the frigid wind is howling, one of my favorite things to do is plan a vacation! What is the most fun about planning a vacation? Planning what I will wear on vacation! Just looking at breezy, lightweight styles in soft fabrics feels like a breath of fresh air. In colder weather, we tend to wear pants, pants, and more pants. Let’s change that up for the spring season by adding cool summer dresses to our wardrobe. Dresses are the perfect warm-weather outfit—easy to pop on and look pulled together. One and done! Dress silhouettes this year are so easy to wear. The body-skimming shift dress looks great on a wide range of figures and is easy to dress up or down with accessories. Just a change of shoes and jewelry can take it from the beach to dinner! Another fabulous and flattering design is the wrap dress or faux wrap dress. This style always creates a nipped-in waist with soft gathers. Whatever length that is good for you is perfect. The color to look for this year is one of my favorites: periwinkle blue. Soft, subtle periwinkle works well for women and men, and it looks just as dynamic on blondes as it does on brunettes and redheads! Pantone defines this 2022 color choice as a color “whose courageous presence encourages personal inventiveness and creativity.” My description of this color is simpler: It just makes you feel good! Among other dominant color choices are what designers are calling “sun salutation.” Solar shades like sun-kissed gold, bronze, amber, and marigold abound in spring collections. Watch for prints and patterns to make their way into our warm-weather looks, too. Dresses, blouses, and even pants will offer fabulous patterned looks this spring. Streetwear influences see a renewed interest in the desire to look feminine. We are happy to see a wave of delicate florals, from watercolors to artistic prints, gracing our stores. Tropical prints are on the rise and are becoming a major force for spring and summer. Look for exotic botanicals and florals along with retro blooms that remind us of the ’60s and ’70s. Nostalgia was everywhere on the spring runways! Innovative patterns are emerging this year in what designers are calling “floral blur.” These prints look exactly how they sound, with florals that look soft and out of focus, creating a modern twist. Are complicated patterns not your style? 10

You can enjoy the resurgence of color blocking that is on trend for 2022. Want to get started with the trend before you hit the stores? Color blocking is easy enough to create with the solid color pieces already in your wardrobe—simply combine several solid pieces into a single look. Bold, vibrant tones look modern when worn together. Pants and tops are a standby for all of us in all seasons. A fresh look in tops this year brings the buttonup-the-front blouse to the forefront. It’s been a while since we’ve seen this look dominating, but we can attest to its versatility and flattering features. First, the design is slimming, as it adds vertical interest. You can unbutton a couple of buttons and add a tank top underneath for a pop of color, or you can tie the shirt tails for a very casual look. Do a half tuck or a full tuck for a more tailored feel. If the top is long-sleeved, roll up the sleeves to just below your elbow—that alone makes for a slimmer look. Important to note is that this year’s cuts are roomier than in the recent past. Be sure to get the correct fit; you don’t want any pulling at the front around the bustline. These days, shorts and pants come in whatever length works for you. Many labels feature inseams that range from 5 to 10 inches. Can mature women still wear shorts? YES! The most flattering length just covers the knee or lands at mid knee. This length covers up just enough but still looks and feels summery and cool. Leisurewear has made great strides in fashion since the pandemic began. Joggers and sweatshirts are no longer just for the gym. Who can resist wearing super soft jogger pants everywhere? You can dress them up or down by adding a matching jacket or even a blazer for a trendy lift. Matching sets are on trend and fun to wear. Now that we are in a spring state of mind, let’s go visit the stores and get inspired for the warm getaways we have been dreaming about!

Mary’s Mountain Cookies Not Your Ordinary Cookie
By Toni Arndt
If you’re looking for freshly-baked, made-from-scratch cookies and brownies, Mary’s Mountain Cookies offers a wide variety of traditional and unique flavors to satisfy that sweet craving. Delectable aromas greet customers as soon as they open the door. The fortunate presence of Mary’s Mountain Cookies in the distinctly mountain-less state of Nebraska is due to the partnership of married couple Craig and Carley Buettner and Craig’s parents, William and Cynthia Buettner. William was a farmer and auto body mechanic when Craig was growing up, and Craig always knew he wanted to be an entrepreneur like his dad. After attending UNO, Craig worked for several years in accounting before opening his own business. Meanwhile, Cynthia had provided business consulting services for a family friend’s Colorado business—namely, Mary’s Mountain Cookies. The cookie company had been shipping freshly baked cookies worldwide since 1986. The Buettner family took note of the online order trends and saw an opportunity to open a franchise in Omaha. In 2019, the team opened their first Mary’s Mountain Cookies location in Rockbrook Village. In June 2021, they opened a second location, at 176th and Q Street. Mary’s Mountain Cookies offers over two dozen types of cookies, including seasonal varieties that rotate every few months. Craig and his father make the dough from scratch, and the cookies are available in two-ounce and four-ounce sizes. In addition to traditional cookies, customers will find unique flavors like Blueberry Oat, Caramel Sea Salt, Almond Pistachio, and Turtle. The shop also offers gluten-free cookies. “Once a week, we spend several hours rigorously cleaning the kitchen to remove flour from the air and all surfaces,” Craig explains. “Cookies are then baked, individually bagged, and frozen to maintain freshness.” Gluten-free flavors include Chocolate Chip, Snickerdoodle, Caramel Sea Salt, M&M, Confetti, and Snickers. “We want to provide an opportunity for people to enjoy something they might not usually get to eat. We are also working on sugar-free, keto, and vegan recipes.” Cookie dough lovers will find edible cookie dough in several flavors. The cookie dough is egg-free and made with heat-treated flour. Take & Bake Dough Balls come in ninepacks ready to pop into the oven for those who want the aroma and warmth of freshly baked cookies at home. Mary’s Mountain Cookies offers more than cookies to satisfy a sweet tooth. Brownies, ice cream, ice cream sandwiches, and milkshakes are also available. Customers can create a unique ice cream sandwich by selecting their desired cookie and ice cream flavors. Signature desserts include the Tornado and Brownie Decadence. The Tornado “milkshake” contains ice cream and edible cookie dough topped with whipped cream. Brownie Decadence is a brownie topped 12
March 2022
with edible chocolate chip cookie dough, ice cream, and toppings. “Customer Craig Buettner, Franchisee experience in the shop is important to us; it’s an extension of our cookies,” Craig asserts. “We provide a welcoming environment and engage with our customers. When customers enter the shop, they may not know exactly what they want, and we enjoy helping them with their selections. They may end up trying something they might not have otherwise tried.” If you’re planning a meeting, birthday party, or other special event, Mary’s Mountain Cookies has the sweet treats covered. They offer cookie party trays, cookie cakes, cookie towers, and even ice cream sandwich bars. “We cater a lot of special occasions,” Craig says. “Our ice cream sandwich bar and brownie bar are popular at wedding receptions. We provide an alternative to cake.” Are you looking for a gift idea? How about a cookie gift basket, a cookie care package, or an Avalanche Giant Cookie? (That’s two 13-inch cookies with buttercream frosting in between.) Holiday gift boxes, wrapped in cellophane with ribbons, are available in the shop or can be delivered locally. A Few Words From One Of Our Advertisers: “I began advertising with Women’s Edition starting with the November 2019 issue and I have been thrilled with the results! I’ve had numerous new clients come to the gallery because they saw my ads in Women’s Edition, even as I’ve been working by appointment in recent months due to the pandemic. Most had never been to downtown Ralston, where I’m located, so introducing them to our town and what we have to offer has been another benefit! The advertising has resulted not only in sales, but also in new followers on my social media platforms and new newsletter subscribers. Together with their outstanding customer service and sales results, advertising with Women’s Edition has been one of the best investments I’ve ever made for my business. PISCES
(February 19-March 20)
Happy birthday, Pisces! As the month begins, you are tapping into your nurturing qualities with concentration on House of Family. The new moon makes an appearance, activating a powerful new beginning in every facet of your life. The planets suggest that you travel…perhaps to a place you have always had on your bucket list? It’s time to consider a journey of emotional experiences! Aries (Mar 21–Apr 19) Your mind feels clouded with a lot of uncertainty. You are not at your most determined self. As the spring equinox approaches, these feelings will lift, freeing your mind and allowing clear divination! Taurus (Apr 20–May 20) This month, you’ll need to channel your innermost organized self. Mercury is being unhelpful in this regard and may cause moments of forgetfulness. Stay on top of preparations and plans! Gemini (May 21–Jun 20) You are feeling physically and emotionally in touch with yourself. Your social life may take an unexpected turn when you try something new and adventurous! Cancer (Jun 21–Jul 22) Your worrisome side may be dominating, but rest assured that this is only temporary. Soon, the spring equinox will appear, bringing new life to everything! Leo (Jul 23–Aug 22) Any financial complications you have been experiencing will soon be resolved. Move forward with the plans you have put in place, and everything will sort itself out. Virgo (Aug 23–Sep 22) Communication may be an opportunity. If you’re making serious plans, delaying them until

month’s end may be best. You need some breathing room before decisions are finalized. Libra (Sep 23–Oct 22) Your romantic life may be particularly dreamy at the moment; however, your professional life is presenting some challenges. Be diplomatic and patient. By month’s end, your energy will be focused back on love! Scorpio (Oct 23–Nov 21) You have never been more in sync with your intuition. Listen to your inner voice! The results will be amusing and satisfying. Sagittarius (Nov 22–Dec 21) Lately, life may be feeling too predictable. Use the full moon as inspiration to be more adventurous! Capricorn (Dec 22–Jan 19) When you treat yourself to something you really want, you are investing in yourself! Keep that in mind when you’re choosing where to spend your money. Aquarius (Jan 20–Feb 18) You treasure your independence and the lifestyle that it represents. You may meet someone new who changes all of that! Sometimes, the sacrifice is worth it!

A Woman’s Work
About Those New Year’s Resolutions The Aftermath
By Sharon Knierim
A couple of months have passed since many of us pledged to do better in our endeavors, to be better people, or to exercise more control over our physical and mental beings. We may now be suffering the consequences of not following through as well as we had planned. Meanwhile, others seem to be enjoying the sweetness of success. When we make resolutions, we have to be careful not to overextend our good intentions. The cessation of smoking tobacco and overeating are two very common resolutions for the New Year. If you have smoked in the past or do so now, you likely know how hard it is to stop. Some people try to eliminate this habit slowly, while others rely on substitutes such as chewing gum or medical patches. Hypnosis is also sometimes attempted. For some smokers who have QUIT, stopping cold turkey seems to be the best bet. It seems that the resolve itself is more important than the method. If you’re trying to quit smoking, good luck to you. If you’re supporting someone in her effort to become a former smoker, offer encouragement but don’t overdo it. Remember, smoking is addictive (just like eating potato chips), and the smoker is actually trying to escape the use of tobacco while reprogramming her personal life. Whatever you do, don’t nag a smoker who is trying to break the habit. If you nag, guess what? That struggling soon-to-
be ex-smoker will just light up again because of the extra pressure. Don’t be preachy! The health benefits of quitting smoking are undeniable. However, when you kick a bad habit, you have to take care not to replace it with a different bad habit (like trading smoking for overeating). With the dropping of a bad habit, new habits and interests can emerge. Many ex-smokers find extra time on their hands, which can be a good thing or a bad thing. This transition is a time for really important decisions. Many ex-smokers turn to crafts or exercise and have greatly benefited. Some turn to increased internet browsing, with less beneficial results. If helpful, offer the ex-smoker constructive ideas. Was a diet on your list of resolutions this year? Again, this requires not only a change of habit but a change of mind-set. Why do so many of us end up overweight? It’s true that heredity and

things like gland problems can help tip the scales, and aging is no friend to controlling weight (or weight distribution). But why do many of us overeat in the first place? Some people eat when they’re upset, or when they’re bored. Some people have trouble deciding when they’re full. Some people just can’t resist the pull of delicious morsels. After all, who ever woke up at midnight to snack on celery and carrots? That’s right—nobody. We’re looking for those chocolate chip cookies on the third shelf of the right-hand cupboard, just behind the big round box of oatmeal. Understanding food and the food industry is important when you’re trying to lose weight. Fast food allows us to dine out for weeks without ever thinking of the pots and pans in our kitchens, so it’s easy to pack on the pounds. But beware, home cooks! Just because a meal was prepared at home, it is not necessarily good for you. You may find yourself reading labels in the supermarket, attempting to understand calories, carbs, fats, and sodium. There is plenty of confusion over what is a good carb and what is a bad carb. Do you know the difference between saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fats? Coupled with eating more than we should, understanding the food pyramid and all these technical terms is enough to make us give up. Not so fast! Seriously losing weight requires determination and willpower. Everyone has habits they would like to break. That’s because we’re human and we have foibles. If you are attempting to change or break a habit, make sure you plan what to do in the aftermath of your success. Ask yourself what you want to achieve. Make plans for the new you. Investigate compelling and interesting ideas, and follow through on those plans. In fact, looking forward to new interests may “take the heat off” of worrying about losing pounds or curtailing smoking. Someone recently told me that when he quit smoking, his senses of smell and taste returned, and he promptly started overeating. One overeater who had trimmed down began smoking to fill his snack time. If this is the aftermath you’re facing, don’t beat yourself up. You’ve changed one bad habit—you can change another. At the beginning of the year, you made the decision to change for a reason. Only you can do it. Do it for yourself and those who love you. You can do it. I know you can.

Design or Remodel Your Dream Home!
By Janette Calabro
Steve Huber, partner and president with Curt Hofer & Associates, was one of the first to join the custom builder’s team, and he loves designing and creating one-of-a-kind projects. The firm’s mainstay is newly constructed, single-family residences. However, Steve shares, requests for home remodels and new additions are on the rise these days.“Times and needs change, kitchens wear out, and people want an update,”he says.“We’ve built custom homes for 30 years, and a lot of those clients still live in the homes we built for them 25 years ago. They may be looking for a remodel. Who better to do the remodel than the people who built your home?” The pandemic made people re-evaluate how they use their homes. That means more requests to add office space to an existing home and greater interest in outdoor living spaces for entertaining, including swimming pools and even pool houses. Feeling safe and secure at home is a common mindset today, Steve says, and people may be choosing to spend money on home improvements instead of travel. Even though the average cost of building per square foot is on the rise, so is the market share of people who want to improve their existing home. Steve speculates that everything from the Kentucky tornadoes to delayed shipping containers may be to blame for the rise in both prices and wait times. Appliances for new construction are ordered first, since they’re about a year out for delivery. Windows and other raw materials needed for building can be several months out. “It’s a different world,” Steve acknowledges, and it might be here to stay. “I don’t see a blip in the radar where a year from now, prices are going to plummet. Lumber, hardware, plastic, carpet—everything has gotten really high-priced.” Inflation, cost of labor, and rounding up employees are all challenges that the construction industry faces. The costs of building and materials may be in a state of flux, but the demand for new construction and remodeling remains strong—it just may take a little longer to build. That makes every day a good day to start talking with a builder about a specific plan. Clients Marvin and Susan were very impressed with their building plan and the finished result. “We were able to convey our ideas and see them reflected in the design,” says the couple. “They were extremely creative and talented, doing everything we talked about, rather than just doing their own thing.” New home styles are catered toward whatever the homeowner wants (within reason). One home in the designing stages right now has the look and feel of Frank Sinatra’s Palm Springs, California, home from the 18
March 2022
1950s. “We’re seeing a lot more of a retro-type feel for modern homes,” says Steve. Steve Huber, President “Imagine homes in California back in that era, homes that were very open, with low-pitched roofs, very airy.” This West Coast–style home will be built right here in the Omaha area. It’s not uncommon to see exteriors built with stucco or brick stone, depending on the type of siding and the look of the home. Detached man caves are popular this year, with a wet bar and the ability to commune with a treasured car collection, all while enjoying luxurious main space living. Resort-style homes are requested, too, and swimming pools are all the rage. In some pool designs, the pool and hot tub are only a few feet away from the master bedroom. Pool decks or man caves may be connected to the main house by a breezeway, an architectural feature like an outdoor hallway to allow passage between two structures. “There are some challenges to that,” Steve acknowledges. “We do live in Omaha, Nebraska, and we do get 20-below temperatures, but it is fun to create that environment.” “From a style perspective, we’ve never built the same home twice in the last 30 years. We truly tailor the look and feel to what the client likes,” Steve says. “Most people aren’t true purists, and they typically end up with a hybrid style of traditional and modern.” The team designs and creates each home to fit the wants and needs of the client. “That’s what’s fun about building a custom home,” Steve concludes. “Everybody lives a little bit differently. Custom building is a one-of-akind home for that individual or couple. We tailor it to fit their lifestyle and how they entertain.” Curt Hofer & Associates is located at 16820 Frances Street, Suite 102, in Omaha. Mommy Makeover
Restore Your Youthful Shape
By Janette Calabro
If you’re done growing your family through childbirth and your body doesn’t look or feel quite the same; if exercise and diet won’t remove that stubborn fat you can pinch just under your skin; if you’re at your ideal weight but stretched-out abdominal skin is hampering your silhouette—you may be a good candidate for a mommy makeover. The phrase“mommy makeover”describes a variety of surgical procedures, performed at the same time, to restore a woman’s body to its pre-pregnancy shape. The treatment areas can include breasts, abdomen, genitalia, and buttocks. Patients can choose from a wide variety of procedures, but a popular package includes breast lift or augmentation and a tummy tuck or liposuction. The goal of a mommy makeover is to restore a lifted, youthful look with tighter body contours—to return your body to its pre-pregnancy shape. It’s not really weight loss surgery, so doctors encourage patients to be at or close to their ideal weight before surgery. Most women do lose two to three pants sizes, especially if they have excess loose abdominal skin. Let’s take a closer look at some popular procedures, the expected recovery time and benefits, and what questions to ask your surgeon. Doctors have expectations, too, and we’ll look at who they think are the best candidates for a mommy makeover. The procedures are usually performed with the patient under general anesthesia, though you can opt for local anesthesia combined with an intravenous sedative. The latter means you can stay awake but won’t feel a thing since you’re numbed and very relaxed. The location of your surgery (hospital, outpatient surgery center, or your surgeon’s private practice) will likely be based on your comfort level and which procedures you choose. The benefits of a mommy makeover are obvious— restoring your youthful body contours! Procedures can correct volume and lift sagging breasts as well as remove excess abdominal fat and loose, stretched-out skin. A whole-body lift is also in the lineup of what a mommy makeover offers. This lift removes excess sagging skin and fat to contour and lift up more than just your tummy. Your buttocks and thighs may get a lift, too, and you can see improvement in dimpled surfaces. Arm lifts are part of the makeover, as well. No body part is out of the question. A popular part of a mommy makeover plan is breast augmentation, often combined with a breast lift. Both procedures are common, but it’s always wise to familiarize yourself with what to expect before, during, and after surgery. Augmentation reshapes the breast with an implant to make it larger. Breast implants are a silicone shell filled with silicone or saline. The implant can be placed through the armpit, the areola, or the crease where the breast meets the chest. After the stitches are removed in roughly a week, your physician will advise restrictions to certain activity and possibly a surgical bra. Breast reduction is also offered as part of a mommy makeover, for women whose breasts have become (or always were) excessively 20
March 2022
large. Your surgeon can help determine which procedure is best for you. Some women feel awkward and ill at ease with sagging or deflated breasts after pregnancy and nursing. A breast lift, known medically as a mastopexy, restores a more youthful look by removing excess skin and tightening surrounding tissue. In some cases, a breast augmentation is combined with a breast lift. If workouts aren’t tightening your tummy, consider a tummy tuck or liposuction in your lineup of procedures for the mommy makeover. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, flattens out your belly by removing excess fat and skin and then restoring the muscles in the abdominal wall, which may have separated during pregnancy. A tummy tuck is for women who are near their ideal weight and are not planning to be pregnant again. If you’re planning to have more children or to lose a lot of weight, talk with your surgeon about postponing the procedure. After surgery, you may need to wear an abdominal binder for about six weeks to help control fluid buildup and support your muscles. Vigorous exercise is not advised for six weeks. Liposuction is a surgical procedure that uses suction to siphon fat from underneath the skin. It can reshape many areas of the body, such as tummy, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms, and even neck. Liposuction and tummy tucks are often combined for the best effects. Liposuction doesn’t reconstruct stomach muscles like a tummy tuck does, so the recovery time is not as extensive. It can take up to seven days before you go back to work and six weeks before you exercise. It’s important to note that procedures like tummy tucks are considered major surgery, so it’s best to look at all the facts before you commit. Your surgeon will require a physical exam and some medical tests to determine that your general health is good before agreeing to the procedure. The initial consultation is a vital learning experience for both the patient and the surgeon. This is the time to discuss your goals and expectations and ask any questions you may have. Your age and medical history determine the extent of testing prior to surgery. Tests may include urinalysis to determine if you have any infections (think bladder,
www.womensedition.com
kidney, or urinary tract) and to check for diabetes or other complications. A blood count can identify bloodborne diseases like HIV or hepatitis and blood disorders such as hemophilia or anemia. A chemistry panel may be done to measure the quantity of sodium, potassium, and glucose in the blood. An electrocardiogram or cardiac stress test may be asked for to check heart health. CT scans, x-rays, and even a mammogram may be requirements before surgery. The tests are important for several reasons, including assessing anesthesia risk. High risk conditions to consider before committing to surgery include hypertension (high blood pressure), type 1 diabetes, pulmonary disease, renal failure or liver disease, and obesity. Patients of advanced age (over 70 years), smokers, and those taking psychotropics for mental illness may also face higher risks with surgery. No single one of these conditions definitively means that you’re not a candidate for cosmetic surgery, but it’s important to be honest with your doctor and discuss your concerns as well as your desired outcome. One of the most important decisions you’ll make is what surgeon will perform your surgeries. There are credentials to look for, but experience and bedside manner also matter. Cosmetic surgeons often deal with markets that are competitive, and they work hard to renew and restore their patients to their desired state. Ask your surgeon for testimonials from former patients—they’re worth their weight in gold. As far as education goes, your surgeon will have completed medical school and a residency, which lasts about six
Members MD.indd 1
years. Sometimes, fellowships follow for an additional year. Choose a physician who is a board-certified plastic surgeon, a Diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. When you meet with your surgeon, don’t forget to ask questions that will inform you and the doc, too. What do you want to change about your body and why? Give details about how you would like to look once your body heals. Ask what results you can expect from each procedure, what the recovery time is, if there are any restrictions post-surgery, and, of course, what happens during each procedure (type of anesthesia, where the incisions are, what the risks are). Is the surgeon you choose experienced in each procedure you desire (both performed singly and as a package)? How many mommy makeovers has your surgeon performed? Be sure to review plenty of before and after photos, and watch for body shapes and challenges that are similar to yours. A popular advantage of the mommy makeover is that a series of procedures can be performed during the same surgery. Reducing the number of times you’re under anesthesia reduces risk, and combining procedures also reduces total recovery time and financial costs. You can dazzle your friends, family, and—most importantly—yourself with dramatic results after a single surgery. The choice is yours, the options vast. Schedule a consultation to put yourself on a path to reclaim your body. Sources for this article included: abplasticsurgery.org, webmd. com, hopkinsmedicine.org, and mayoclinic.org.

Stark Media Films Stark Media was born out of a six-year stint as IT/desktop support for a large credit card processing company. I then stumbled onto an opportunity to make “videos” for that same company. I said yes. My role was to produce in-house corporate marketing videos. Having no real experience as a videographer, I had to adopt the “fake it ‘til you make it” mentality...and it worked. Fast forward three years. The excitement was missing, I was yearning for more meaningful projects. I became complacent and uninspired. Although it did put food on the table, I yearned to produce something with more impact and meaning. Then along came another opportunity to help produce a short film about Alzheimers. That changed the game for me. This is what I was reaching for. Real stories, real people who inspire and provoke viewers. It was the most challenging endeavor I had done at the time. Understanding how to tell a strong story in the least amount of time, and how to engage the viewer for the duration of the piece, is not easy. Our purpose is to make something powerful, moving, and memorable. Recently, we produced a “Memory” video for a retired couple. Their story was captivating and powerful. Everybody has a story just waiting to be told. What’s your story?
“I have turned my passion into my profession and that is helping people live longer lives without pain and suffering.” NUCCA is a gentle, specific correction in the upper neck that takes the pressure off of the brainstem so that it and the entire nervous system can function properly.

The hunt for beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces for our homes is an ongoing thrill for many homeowners. It makes sense to take pride in the self-expression that comes with designing a home’s aesthetic, and doing it with modern or vintage or repurposed pieces which adds the magic of adventure. When you find, fall in love with, and purchase a piece of repurposed or used furniture, you’re not just practicing sustainability—you’re inheriting the item’s story. You’ll find these stories around every corner at Out of the Box. Out of the Box is a retail furniture store specializing in gently used, hand-chosen, designer furniture and building products. Its new 23,000-square-foot showroom is open in the Granary in Ralston, and you will not want to miss the magic that this place has in store. You just might find the gem that completes the creative project that is in your home or business. Jody Strauch and her husband Steen Lundberg have owned Out of the Box in Lincoln since 2011, and they decided to bring their business to Omaha this year. “We’ve been repurposing high-quality, designer, and architecturally significant building products and furniture for well over 20 years,” says Jody. “We obtain many of our pieces from very high-end homes in the Colorado mountain environment. They are primarily vacation homes that are enjoyed only on an occasional basis.” That means the pieces you’ll find at Out of the Box were rarely used and are like new! Jody and Steen offer a very personalized business. They check the website throughout the day to see if anyone has purchased an item online, and they’re in the showroom Tuesday through Sunday. “When a customer comes into our store, they are our priority, and we offer our time and knowledge to them,” Jody shares. “We like to know what project they are working on in their home so we can direct them quickly to items that might be of interest to them. We often work with new homeowners, reviewing their architectural plans for the potential installation of a reclaimed kitchen at a fraction of the cost of a new kitchen.” Jody and Steen built homes in the Colorado Rockies and restored high-end homes in the competitive Denver market for more than 14 years. “We spent 30 years in Colorado and came back to Lincoln to enjoy the final years of my parents’ life,” Jody explains. “We opened Out of the Box in Lincoln in 2011 and have really enjoyed the business.” The positive response they received in Lincoln encouraged them to bring their business to the larger Omaha market. “We’re excited about our move into the historic Granary area in Ralston.” Jody and Steen love seeing customers experience the excitement that comes with purchasing a reclaimed item and seeing it complement their homes. the trend of the younger genJody Strauch and eration. They get excited about using Steen Lundberg, Owners reclaimed materials. “They are environmentally sensitive; they feel good about repurposing home improvement items that are still very usable. As a result, do not simply end up in the landfills. This is so important to our future! The timing for our Omaha showroom is perfect because we can offer this in a very clean, yet historic repurposed building. This is a destination shopping experience.” Getting more people on board with sustainably sourced products is the way of the future, and Jody and Steen are glad to be a part of it. They are looking forward to meeting you in their gorgeous showroom at the Granary in Ralston, filled with many pieces of furniture and reclaimed building products for their customers to explore and enjoy. Jody and Steen would like to acknowledge some of the amazing people who have helped them get to this place. “We’re grateful for people like the very creative Jackie Allen, who loves the use of reclaimed materials. She has gone the extra mile and has the vision of how important a store like this can be to people who want their home to be an expression of their personality,” Jody says. “Kim Burns and Kelly Smith, with years of carpentry and building experience, reimagined an old, empty granary and restored it into a place you could wander and enjoy for hours. We thank De Ann McHargue, who has the vision to bring the ‘past to the present.’ In the process of this restoration, they used all recycled building products to make this happen. You have to see their work to truly appreciate the creativity of the space.” That’s right—even the showroom itself is reclaimed! Customers can browse and shop online at ootbreclaimed.com, but “to really understand what we are trying to express, you must come and visit us,” Jody concludes. The showroom is open at 7401 Main Street, Suite 300, in Ralston. To learn more, call 303-669-5237. Congratulations to Jody and Steen, and welcome to the Omaha area!

Innovations in Beauty Stem Cell Therapy
By Loretta McCollum
As we age, the wear and tear on our skin begins to appear in the form of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as saggy, baggy skin. When we look in the mirror, we see crow’s feet, furrowed brows, and those dreaded droopy jowls that are adorable on your neighbor’s pug but not so much on your face. We all want younger, healthier-looking skin. Regenerative aesthetic treatments like stem cell therapy can help us achieve that goal by naturally reversing the appearance of aging skin. Stem cell therapy can make anyone look like the best version of themselves while avoiding the risk of an unnatural or frozen appearance. It works on a cellular level by activating the restorative processes naturally present in the human body. It’s anti-aging from within! It’s becoming more prevalent because it encourages the body to regenerate itself, avoiding many of the adverse effects of conventional treatments. Stem cells play an essential role in tissue creation, regeneration, and healing by stimulating cell renewal and collagen production. They differ from other cells in that they can self-replicate for long periods of time. They have the ability to repair damaged cells. Aesthetic stem cell treatments provide many benefits, including minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improving skin texture, minimizing pore size, reducing visibility of acne scars, stimulating skin plumpness, and decreasing the occurrence of hyperpigmentation. A stem cell facelift tightens the skin while also adding

volume to reduce facial wrinkles and sagging. Unlike a surgical facelift, which repositions body tissue, a stem cell facelift helps the skin rejuvenate itself. The procedure involves extracting fat cells from one part of the body and adding them to the face. Two separate office visits are required. At the first visit, the stem cells are extracted through a fat harvesting procedure. A local anesthetic is applied to the abdomen or upper buttocks and the fat cells are extracted using a needle. Those cells are then sent to a lab, where the fat will be separated from the stem cells. At the second visit, the cells are injected into the face. Following the procedure, your face may sting and may be somewhat red and tender for a few days. In two to three days, you should notice improvements in skin volume and texture. Results become gradually visible over time, and the benefits can last for a few years. Stem cell breast enhancement is also gaining in popularity. It results in a more natural appearance than silicone or

Interior Design Trends 2022 What’s In and What’s Out
By Robyn V. Powell
Since ancient times, people have looked to their homes as a refuge, a place to escape the tumult of the world and find inner peace. Throughout the ages, interior design has played a central role in this universal quest. Take the Romans, who sought the harmony of nature through the use of color and shape, or the people who developed the Chinese art of feng shui, in which objects are arranged so as to achieve harmony and balance. Interior design trends may have evolved over the centuries, but research supports an enduring truth: our homes have a direct impact on our health and well-being. So, as we enter year three of the pandemic, is it any surprise that interior design trends are once again focused on creating a sense of calm to soothe our senses? After spending so much time indoors, homeowners yearn to surround themselves with the restorative qualities found in nature. This desire has been the primary driver behind recent design trends. In terms of color, things are definitely warming up! We’re seeing a shift away from crisp white walls or the cool gray backdrop of the last decade with the emergence of earthy tones like rosy terracotta or burnt umber. Deeper tones are also resonating, but these are warm and inspired by nature— chocolate brown, caramel, and cognac. We’ll see rooms with ceilings, walls, doors, and wood trim all bathed in the same rich hues, becoming spaces that envelop and cocoon us. Pops of vibrant accent colors are showing up on kitchen islands painted bold blue, rich red, and deep green.
In response to consumer demand for an aesthetic rooted in nature, manufacturers of wood floors, furniture, and cabinetry are creating products that showcase the natural beauty of wood. From bleached, sun-weathered wood finishes that lend a time-worn and familiar feel, to charred and distressed finishes of chocolatey brown or dusky black, wood highlights a room’s authentic and rustic charm. Designers tell us that the use of organic elements provides balance in interior and exterior design. The imperfect surfaces of stone, travertine, and marble can be used on floors, backsplashes, and bath and shower surrounds. Earthy elements such as wood, stone, and clay work well as accent materials, while textured jute and fiber rugs add depth and help ground a space.

Erin listened, assessed my concerns/desires and was knowledgeable and responsive. So it made great sense for her to assist us in our future housing prospect—a downtown condo. Again, she listened, did her homework, and presented the best-matched properties to tour. She kept at it—in her words, “it’s a process.” Eventually we found the condo of our dreams—and then she REALLY went to work to buy us two more years in our home. We had three rental companies tell us we were doing the impossible yet Erin put her networking skills together and found an ideal tenant, willing to pay—cash up front! We highly recommend her to help you find the perfect match!” — Mary

The desire to have a unique home has inspired an eclectic mix of styles and materials, drawing upon design elements from different eras and bringing them together in an interesting and original way. For example, placing a graceful vintage sofa in an otherwise contemporary room gives the space a delightful and unexpected energy. Pairing a modern curvaceous sofa with chintz fabrics reminiscent of 1940s glamour creates a surprisingly inviting vibe. The clean lines of the minimalist trend are being upstaged by warm and inviting curves. Curves are showing up in architecture and furnishings. Sofas and chairs are softer in shape and finished in sumptuous fabrics like vintage velvet or worn leather. The re-emergence of floral wallpaper and bold-patterned fabric for window treatments signifies a move to the “more is more” ethos of past eras but in a more curated style. Nostalgia has reawakened an appreciation for things that connect us to the past and tell a story. Vintage furniture has a wonderfully warm patina, lending texture to a space while bringing with it a rich and spirited sense of history. By repurposing something old or restoring something damaged, we are reducing our footprint while supporting stylish sustainability! Lighting is a surefire way to refresh a space. Current lighting trends are in keeping with vintage revival. Old-world chandeliers are sporting modern finishes made from natural materials like wooden beads and rattan, putting a new spin on a classic. These organic fixtures work well in kitchens, baths, and any other room that can support a woodsy, outdoor vibe. The pandemic has reframed our lifestyles. We have come to realize our need for privacy and quiet spaces. Open floor plans will give way to more defined and traditional spaces. People also expect their spaces to work harder for them now than ever before. Many rooms are called upon to serve double duty, so we’ll see more dual purpose rooms, like a kitchen that serves as a meeting center or a room that is used as an office by day but becomes a bedroom at night. More and more, we’re seeing homeowners embrace individuality when it comes to the way they choose to design their spaces. Your home is your sanctuary, to design as you wish. The most important thing is to make it your own! Sources for this article included: consumerreports.org, houzz.com, and hgtv.com.

Outsmart Colorectal Cancer Identify Your Risk and Screen Early!
By Leslie Byrne
March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and it’s a great time to review the risk factors and (if applicable) schedule a screening. For 2022, experts estimate more than 106,000 new cases of colon cancer and close to 45,000 cases of rectal cancer in the United States. Colon cancer is cancer of the colon and rectal cancer is cancer in the rectum—together, they are colorectal cancer. It’s the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and equally affects men and women of all races and nationalities. Because so many people do not show any signs or symptoms before being diagnosed, having a regular screening is crucial to catching it early. When caught early, the recovery rate is 90 percent. Americans aged 45 or older are advised to schedule a screening. (The age to start screening was dropped from 50 due to an increase in the number of Americans under age 50 being diagnosed.) Your risk of getting colorectal cancer increases as you age; that is why the screening is not recommended for younger people unless they have a genetic risk or experience symptoms. Other risk factors include having an inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, a personal or family history of colorectal cancer or colorectal polyps, and Lynch syndrome (a hereditary colorectal cancer). Most people show no symptoms of colorectal cancer. That said, a change in bowel habits, including significant diarrhea or constipation, may be a sign of colorectal cancer and merits a mention to your physician. Other symptoms include rectal
bleeding, blood in the stool, and abdominal cramps, gas, or pain. Other signs to watch for are fatigue, unexplained weight loss, or feeling like the bowel does not empty. Many people with colon cancer experience none of the symptoms just described during the early stages of the disease, which is why screening is so important. A colonoscopy screens for cancer and can literally be life-saving. During the procedure, the doctor can even remove polyps (growths on the inner lining of the colon that can develop into cancer). This brings us to the main reason that so many people put off their screening—embarrassment about the body parts in question. It’s important to remember that the people performing colonoscopies are trained medical professionals who do this procedure every day. They understand their patients are nervous and

As with so many other cancers, researchers are working to develop a vaccine for the prevention of colorectal cancer in patients at high genetic risk. Although still in the design phase, one study will test a vaccine against Lynch syndrome, a common hereditary condition that carries a 70 to 80 percent lifetime risk for colorectal cancer. The vaccine is expected to start its early-phase safety and immunogenicity trial in 2022. The medical community is eager to see if vaccines will work to prevent several cancers. Peak Performance
More Than Just a Lawn Professional Landscape Design
By Maria Harding
Having a well-designed landscape around a home can vastly improve its curb appeal and, therefore, its value. Greenery, shade trees, curved retaining walls, or a firepit seating area can create a backyard oasis, opening a usable outdoor space for homeowners. If landscaping is done piecemeal, a well-intentioned amateur gardener can run into endless problems. An experienced landscape designer can help navigate all of the potential pitfalls, ultimately saving clients time and money. In turn, this allows homeowners the opportunity to enjoy their garden spaces sooner, with fewer headaches along the way. Important aspects to consider up front include budget, irrigation, sunlight, space (both vertical and horizontal), and installation equipment and tools. Detailing a budget with the assistance of a professional landscape company will reassure homeowners that their overview of the expenses is realistic and comprehensive. It is not only a matter of deciding how much to spend on plants and labor; less obvious purchases like soil, mulch, stone, and equipment rental need to be part of the plan. If a client’s budget does not realistically allow for the project to be done all at
once, a landscape designer will have advice for how to break the overall vision down into affordable phases. When considering systemic irrigation, homeowners must be careful to run adequate supply lines to new plantings. A landscape specialist can help clients establish garden zones that group plants with similar hydration needs. They will also make sure that the system is spaced correctly and has adequate water pressure. Drainage is as important as hydration. A landscape designer will test soil composition for its infiltration rate, evaluate naturally occurring slopes or level changes, and perhaps recommend that some hard surface areas incorporate permeable pavement or concealed drainage. All of these components may need to be addressed to keep plants happy and protect the home’s foundation. When mapping out irrigation and drainage routes, it is

vital to know where existing pipes or cables are for the home. Damage to plumbing or gas lines from deep digging could be disastrous. Landscaping teams will consult with utility companies, evaluate blueprints, or use metal detection to avoid digging into existing utilities. Sunlight will hit areas of the property differently depending on the time of day and the season. A landscape designer will know which regional plants thrive in full sun or heavy shade, avoiding temperamental imports that clients might have seen in a catalogue but would be doomed to failure in their own climate. Landscapers have access to the best nurseries to supply consistently healthy plants, and their experience informs which plants work well together for symbiotically sharing the soil, warding off pests, and colorfully alternating peak seasons. A landscape designer also takes into account how tall the new plants will eventually become and how this might affect sunshine in areas of the garden. A thoughtful layout can prevent larger plants from overshadowing smaller counterparts when they reach maturity. This helps avoid the need to replant the bed in subsequent years. Knowing the eventual size and reach of plants in a landscape is also important for planning the long-term beauty and functionality of beds. Owners won’t appreciate plant combinations that are imbalanced in size, that look overcrowded, or that block a beautiful view from a picture window. Calculating the expanse of full-sized plants will avoid risk to property when branches knock against the house or
grow dangerously close to overhead utility cables. The heavy lifting and intense physical labor involved in planting trees, creating a retaining wall, or laying patio stones is impossible for many homeowners to consider doing on their own. A professional landscaping team has specialized equipment and experience operating that machinery. They will be able to do the work in a fraction of the time, with minimal damage to existing yard and home. Most reputable landscapers have excellent follow-up service. If a plant withers or struggles, a project leader should help clients determine the cause of the plant’s stress, offering solutions or replacing a plant that is just not going to survive. Look for companies who offer this post-production support. When shopping around for a landscaper, homeowners should also take into consideration customer testimonials and the overall style of other completed projects of similar size. Large projects will require a team of gardeners, so look for a company that verifies that every worker coming onto your property will be fully insured by them. When considering all of the expensive missteps that could be taken in a do-it-yourself landscape, the decision to contact an experienced landscape designer seems obvious. A designer’s expertise guides homeowners around potential hazards so that owners’ attention can focus on the more enjoyable, imaginative decisions to be made in creating a unique outdoor haven. “We are very pleased with our patio and fire pit! I had an idea of what we wanted, but didn’t know what would work best with our backyard. They put together a plan and a quote and worked with me until we had a solution that fit both our wishes and our budget. The installers were meticulous, as well as polite. They cleaned up the area and replaced sod so that everything looked complete.”— Karen C.

Midwest Pain Clinic Can Help
By Linda Sutherland
Ah, pain—we know you so well! That distressing sensation that makes a brief stop in the body or stays for the long haul. It is an unpleasant fact that people suffer experiences which can lead to chronic pain and even tissue damage. Depending on the degree and frequency of their distress, some people choose to ignore it and others choose to see how they can manage it…and maybe even get rid of it. The professionals at Midwest Pain Clinic stand at the ready to guide you back to a life with less pain. At Midwest Pain Clinic, they understand that pain can be neglected and misunderstood. Pain can come on quickly or develop over time. It can be acute (limited) or chronic (persistent), and it can be mild, moderate, severe, or even fully debilitating. Whether you suffer from migraines, arthritis, fibromyalgia, or pain in the knee, back, neck, or hip, these caring professionals can reduce pain and suffering, both physically and mentally, and help
determine the underlying cause of your pain. What can you expect if you make an appointment at Midwest Pain Clinic? You can expect comprehensive care from the moment you arrive. They will initially work with you to find the cause of your pain and narrow down the treatment options. They do not want to mask your pain—they want to find the cause, treat it, rehabilitate you, and return you

to the quality of life that you want and deserve. Chronic pain may have left you on the sidelines of life for some time, and the team’s goal is to get you back in the game. The team at Midwest Pain Clinic takes a detailed approach to pain management. Once they have identified the cause of your pain, they select the best tool from an arsenal of treatments. A great deal of their patients come into the clinic with arthritis pain, and many of them are treated with radiofrequency ablation (RFA). In this procedure, which is administered much like an injection, they burn the arthritic joint nerves to block the pain. This can last for six to twelve months. RFA is performed right there at the clinic, and it can be repeated for ongoing treatment. They have had much success with this procedure and continue to make strides in reducing pain and suffering in their patients. Some of the other services and treatments they offer include nerve block procedures, joint injection procedures, medication management, behavioral health management, trigger point injection treatments, sacroiliac joint fusion, pain patches, suboxone treatment, ketamine infusion therapy, and Botox injections for migraines. They also treat post-surgical patients who perhaps are not getting the relief they had hoped for after knee or hip replacement. One of the doctors on the team, Dr. Rafal Krejza, is board-certified in anesthesiology and pain management and specializes in chronic pain. Dr. Krejza grew up in Poland and always knew he wanted to be a doctor. He moved to Chicago when he was a teenager and then attended Des Moines

University for medical school. He performed his residency at UNMC and did a year-long fellowship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. Now he is part of the team at Midwest Pain Clinic, and he loves the fact that he can help people find their way out of pain. “Nothing is more rewarding than helping a patient who has lived with pain to find relief and live the life they were meant to live,” he says. Chronic pain affects around 20 percent of adults in the United States, so the people of Omaha are lucky to have Dr. Krejza among us! He is delighted to work at Midwest Pain Clinic. “We do not turn away anyone at this clinic because we want to lead them where they need to go to manage their pain,” he says. “I love that we can offer many options of care for pain management under one roof and make intervention a priority in people’s lives.” The advocates at Midwest Pain Clinic take pain management very seriously and strive to reduce or eliminate pain and suffering in a responsible manner. “It is extremely important that the patient and the doctor have good communication so that the pain and cause can be addressed safely,” Dr. Krejza advises. It is not necessary to have a referral to see the doctors at Midwest Pain Clinic. You can reach them at 402-391-7246 or by visiting midwestpainclinics.com. Don’t suffer another day! No matter how long you’ve been living with pain, Midwest Pain Clinic is here to help you get back to a better life!

Focus on Finance
It Ain’t Rocket Science Make Your Choice!
By George Morgan
Americans love to find complex solutions for even the simplest problems. Case in point: toothpaste. I recently went to a big box store and counted 47 kinds of toothpaste. I then asked my dentist which type I should use. His answer?“It doesn’t matter. They all do the same thing—prevent cavities and make you socially acceptable to your family and friends.”If they are all the same, why so many brands? In a word: marketing. If I can convince you that you can improve your health, wealth, and even love life with the stroke of a toothbrush, you might be willing to pay big bucks for my brand. Every industry uses marketing concepts in one way or another, and the financial services industry is no exception. For example, let’s take a look at what happened with index funds. An index fund is a mutual fund that mirrors a specific market index. They accomplish this by buying and holding all the stocks in the chosen index. The fund is passive—that is, it does not trade its holdings to improve its performance. This avoids the expenses of a money manager and active trading. The cost savings are passed on to the shareholders in the form of increased investment returns. The index fund phenomenon began in 1979, when Vanguard offered an S&P 500 index fund to the public. Vanguard’s initial effort was not a blockbuster. In its first year, it only raised $11 million. A decade passed before other mutual fund companies ventured into the index fund arena with offerings focused on the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nasdaq Index. Morgan Stanley was the first to go international, with funds specializing in European and emerging market indexes. PIMCO was the first to offer bond index funds based on their own indexes. Index funds come in two distinct forms. Conventional mutual funds are bought and sold at the market’s close; exchange traded funds are bought and sold on the exchanges during the trading day. Over the course of the past decade, the competition between discount brokers and traditional Wall Street firms has driven the cost of buying and holding index funds close to zero. The average maintenance cost of a traditional index fund is 0.04 percent. Those who purchase index funds in 401(k)s and related retirement funds can expect to pay as little as 0.02 percent in fees. In the decade following Vanguard’s entry into the market, there were only three indexes that were tracked by the funds. Today, that number is over 700. There are funds that mirror indexes that did not even exist 30 years ago. Why so many? It’s the same as in the toothpaste aisle: marketing. If you name an industry or sector of the market, Wall Street will build an index and a fund to track it. The financial media has labeled this activity “enhanced indexing.” Enhanced indexing is a catch-all term that describes when financial firms take a major index and break it down into smaller segments. This happens all the time. 42
March 2022
There is an index that only includes the smaller companies from the S&P. There is one that includes only medical stocks, one that includes only financial stocks, one that includes only media stocks. My all-time favorite is the index that includes only companies in the pet industry. Every time I buy dog food, I think that this one has got to be a home run. Each one of these indexes and their associated funds has advantages and disadvantages. The traditional index funds are the most cost-efficient, but they require patience and discipline. They subject their investors to all the peaks and valleys of the market over the long term. The enhanced index funds require considerably more effort to follow. They are less cost-efficient but tend to provide a larger payout—that is, when you are fortunate enough to choose the right one. There are those who seek simplicity in everything they do. For them, the basic index fund is a smart investment solution. There are also adventurous souls who seek the new and bold, and there are members of the financial services industry who are ready and willing to slake their thirst. Here, the phrase “Buyer, beware!” comes into play. Investors should be allowed to use the products or services of their choosing, as long as they are wide-eyed and fully informed. It follows that the brokers who provide these services should be appropriately compensated for their time and expertise. Bottom line: Just like the toothpaste industry, the American financial services industry provides an expansive menu for people of all stripes to choose from. Peterson Inspections & Home Repair A Local Contractor You Can Trust
By Marge Shoemaker
Spring is just around the corner! Time to start focusing on home projects inside and out or even buying a different home all together. I recently had the opportunity to visit with Aaron Peterson, owner of Peterson Inspections & Home Repair. His company has evolved out of past job experience and the passion to help people resolve problems around their home. Aaron Peterson spent several years at a state-operated non-profit concerned with affordable housing and making the homes more energy efficient. Ultimately, he realized there was need for more small businesses capable of doing this kind of work, and he started Peterson Inspections & Home Repairs seven years ago. “I knew I had the skills because of the many facets of the job I’d held,” he recalls. “That training was more in-depth than most people learn in school or regular construction work because of the myriad state requirements which needed to be met.” Most of his previous job had involved inspections of houses. “I learned to look for problems that might not be apparent to the untrained eye,” says Aaron. His work also put him in touch with others doing similar work in the community. “Some of the problems were minor and easily fixed by our own people; others required hiring larger, better equipped crews,” Aaron recalls. “I learned who could be relied on and who wasn’t quite as dependable. That knowledge has been a real asset in running my own company.” Regarding the home inspection side of the business Aaron gave this example: Imagine you find a wonderful new home. You move in, decorate the space, and buy great new furniture and appliances. You love the place... until next summer, when the air conditioner fails, the ceiling shows a water stain, and you see the beginnings of a mold problem. According to Aaron, there are four things a careful home inspector will call attention to, many issues that even the most observant homeowner can miss. They are poor electrical wiring, water damage, defective plumbing, and mold growth. He encourages everyone to make sure to schedule home inspection services before you buy property or even before you make the decision to sell a property. In the end, it will make your life so much easier. The home repair side of the business melds perfectly with the inspection side. Aaron and his crew are highly qualified for most home improvement or small remodeling projects inside and outside a home. One of the most important skills needed in contracting work for any job, Aaron believes, is open communication between the owner and the contractor. “When I’m asked to give an estimate for a project, I need to know what the client is thinking,” he says. “Often, a homeowner will say he wants an estimate without thinking about the details.” Before Aaron (or any contractor) can offer his honest estimate, there are certain details he needs to know.
First, he needs to know what the client has in mind. Aaron suggests that potential clients gather photos or drawings of what they want to see in the final project. Second, Aaron needs to know the size and scope Aaron Peterson, Owner of the project. He and his crew can take on projects of many different sizes, but some are simply too big or are beyond their areas of expertise. In that case, he notes, he is happy to refer people to other businesses that he trusts to get the job done. For an accurate estimate, Aaron also needs to know up front who is furnishing the materials. After all, if the homeowner already has some materials on hand for the project, it can make a big difference in the cost estimate. He also needs to know when he can access the property and how soon the client expects the job to be completed. “When scheduling a crew, I need to know what hours the site will be available so I can make the necessary arrangements,” he explains. Aaron reminds us that an estimate is an educated guess at the cost of the job…it doesn’t take into consideration owners changing their plans, any difficulty in obtaining materials, or a spectrum of other problems that might arise. “I can pretty well nail down labor cost on a job,” Aaron says, but he points out that the cost and availability of materials is always in flux, especially with current supply chain issues and shortages. “My crews and I try to maintain open communication during all phases of a job,” he declares. That includes engaging a client’s suggestions or questions concerning choice of materials or methods. “Acknowledging client input is important to maintaining a good relationship.” Aaron’s three-pronged advice to any of us looking for a contractor? Read the fine print. Price doesn’t always indicate quality. Find someone you like and trust. Steve G. has worked with Aaron multiple times and comments, “They’re knowledgeable and easy to work with. I highly recommend Aaron and his crews.” Call or text Aaron Peterson, owner/operator of Peterson Inspections & Home Repair, at 402-720-9010. He generally works within a 60-mile radius of Fremont, Nebraska. March 2022

Perennials for 2022
New Faces for Spectacular Places
By Linda Sutherland
Each year, I strive to plant some species that are new to the botanical world. This year seems to be offering some outrageously beautiful new introductions. I took some time to peruse the new faces during my garden planning. There are a few newbies that I’m particularly excited about this year. My first foray into new varieties (no surprise here) was roses. Jackson & Perkins (the longtime leader in vibrant, quality roses) has introduced a couple of dandy varieties. The first is called Ay Caramba! (The name makes me think of Lucy and Desi.) This floribunda rose is strikingly gorgeous, with dark orange blooms and a pleasing tea fragrance. It blooms continuously over a long season, and the blooms make spectacular cuttings. The other new rose from Jackson & Perkins is called Over the Edge. This beauty is also a floribunda rose that blooms all season. This pinkish-peach rose unfurls in clusters of spiraled flowers with double blooms. It looks old-fashioned and has a strong, fruity fragrance. I definitely need this in my life! Both of these rose varieties are disease resistant. If you read this column regularly, then you know I love coneflowers. There are a few new ones that I think are worth looking into. Pretty Parasols really do look like parasols. They have a prominent central cone with white petals that gradu-

ate to a soft pink toward the center. They look like a party for butterflies! Another new variety of coneflower is Sunseekers Rainbow. This gorgeous variety actually changes colors. Blooms start out orange and warm yellow and then mature to coral, salmon, blush, and lavender. They bloom summer to fall, and they are draught resistant. Sign me up, please! Another Sunseeker coneflower not to miss is White Perfection. They have large semi-double blooms with layers of creamy white petals. These beauties are very hardy and drought tolerant. They are also an excellent nectar source for pollinators. Dinner plate dahlias are a wonder in any variety, and there are several new varieties this year. The one called Wanda’s Aurora certainly caught my eye. It has yellow centers that merge into orange with pink outer petals. Lavender Perfection features lush flowers in an amazing shade of lavender. Spoiled Rotten is a winner that has fuchsia-pink double blooms with a creamy yellow heart.
2/8/22 2:08 PM

I will always have calla lilies in my garden, and I am excited this season for a new one called Dubai Nights. Its velvety, deep purple blooms are so dark they’re almost black, and they have a creamy white outer margin. Just to add a little more interest, the plant has speckled foliage. Shade-loving blossoms get a boost with Milk and Honey astilbe. These are so easy to grow! They produce fluffy, creamy white flower heads that are tipped in green. The flower changes to soft pink as time passes, giving that space in your garden a whole new look later in the season. A new shade-loving hosta called Ki-Renjyaku is a Japanese import that is known more for its flowers than its foliage. (If you are familiar with hostas, you know that is unusual!) This amazing variety bears fully double pale lavender blooms. As a bonus, the light green spring foliage turns creamy yellow in the summer. Asters are my favorite fall flower strictly because of the number of butterflies they attract. There is a new aster out that looks spectacular. It is called Bridal Veil and it is exquisite. It has arching stems filled with daisy-like blooms that create a cascading effect. It is a very vigorous bloomer, and it has a lovely, sweet fragrance. If I can find these, they will definitely be in my garden this season. If you have an area in the garden that never seems to dry out completely, you might want to look into a new iris called Shiryukyo. It performs well in wet spaces but, unlike some iris varieties, it is not invasive. It has reddish-purple blooms with deep purple markings. These boldly colored irises also attract hummingbirds. Gardening trends for 2022 will include sustainability and supporting wildlife. Expect garden ponds to be popular! Besides bringing beauty to your yard, ponds attract wildlife as a neighborhood water source. Sustainability will be bigger than ever this year, with people reusing and recycling before they go out and buy pots and containers they may not need. Re-purposing has never been more popular. More people will be using gravel for landscaping, as it fits into everyone’s budget and offers a natural feeling. People are starting to embrace native plants to help our wildlife thrive! Native perennials are always a win, as they return year after year like old friends.

Estate Planning
Do Your Family a Favor
By Linda Barnes
Are you one of the estimated 60 percent of adults without a will? There are many good reasons to get your affairs in order, including that it will ease the burden on your heirs at the time of your death. You don’t have to be“old”or have a large estate to benefit from estate planning. A will and other essential documents make life easier during a difficult time for family and give you peace of mind, as well. A will essentially outlines what is to happen to your assets after you die. Without a will, there may be legal entanglements, misunderstandings, delays, and the like. If you have minor children, a judge will decide who gets legal guardianship. A judge will also appoint an executor of your estate. Your spouse may only receive a portion of your estate. Wouldn’t you rather decide those issues yourself? A will alone is not enough. A durable power of attorney for financial affairs is recommended, as is a health care power of attorney. An advance health care directive, sometimes called a living will, is an important part of being proactive. This sounds daunting, but it really isn’t. My husband and I spent about an hour with a trusted attorney to accomplish it all. The attorney told us what we needed to bring along, and we reviewed life insurance policies and pension plans prior to our meeting. Our assets are modest and our finances are not that complicated. With more substantial assets or more complex financial
46 1 Elder Law.indd

Who will take care of your children and pets?
arrangements, an estate attorney or financial planner will be advantageous. Taxes come into play. State laws vary, so if you own property in two different states, that will be a consideration. If you’re approaching retirement and hope to move to another state, go ahead and do your estate planning now. Revisions can be made later, if needed. Each half of a married couple should have a separate will. In it, one bequeaths his or her property to a designated person, most often the surviving spouse. A provision names other recipients should the spouse not survive. In addition, the will may name a personal representative or executor (and an alternate, in case the former is unable to serve). Another estate planning option is a living trust. Like a will, the trust document describes how one’s assets are to be distributed and designates a trustee to carry out your wishes. A trust may help you avoid probate, may afford tax benefits, and may speed the distribution of inheritance to your heirs. If you become incapacitated, the trustee can manage your assets. A

charitable trust might be an option for giving a generous donation to a favorite charity while giving your heirs a sizable tax break. Two popular kinds are a revocable trust and irrevocable trust. As the names imply, one can be cancelled or changed (revoked); the other cannot. You will likely need an attorney with expertise in estate planning to explain the fine differences between the two. They will be able to advise you regarding the advantages and disadvantages of each and determine which will better meet your needs. An advance directive is an important part of an estate plan. Sometimes called a living will, this document outlines your wishes if you become terminally ill or catastrophically injured and are unable to make treatment decisions. It lets your family and physician know what you do or do not want in the way of life-prolonging strategies. A durable power of attorney authorizes a person you choose to make financial decisions if you’re unable to. That person can do such things as pay bills, receive income, sell property, or handle taxes for you and in your name. Similarly, a power of attorney for health care designates a person to make health care decisions should you become unable to make them. That person can review any of your medical records and arrange for hospital or other care. Consent for treatments, surgery, and pain relief or other drugs are included in the person’s authority. Estate planning should be done early and should be updated every few years as circumstances change. A divorce or death, the birth of a child or grandchild, a move to a different state, or the sale or acquisition of property are examples of major changes that might necessitate an update. Finally, give thoughtful consideration to whom you might designate for various roles. Split up the responsibilities. Respect the abilities of those you are considering. One person might manage financial responsibilities better than another. Consider the time they may have available and whether they live nearby. Do your loved ones a favor and don’t put it off any longer! Sources for this article included: thebalance.com, aarp.org, findlaw.com, and executor.org.

Refresh, Renew, and Brighten Spring Tasks That Benefit Everyone
Ah, spring! What does it make you think of? I think of the greening of the trees, yards, and gardens. I think of fresh air, warm days, light jackets or sweatshirts rather than heavy winter coats. I think of gentle rain, growth, renewal, and hope. Last, but not least, I think of spring cleaning and all the outdoor chores waiting for me. This year, I hope to get a head start on spring cleaning. For the past year, I’ve been meaning to clean the stove hood and wipe down the cabinet faces. Some days, the cobwebs remind me of Halloween decorations. Like dirty dishes and weeds, they replenish themselves as soon as I address them. If I still had kids at home, I’d get them to help me. Work is a lot more fun when you share it with someone. Even little kids can use a cloth to wipe along baseboards and flat surfaces. This year, I hope to take down the screens and hose them off. It’s an easier task now than it was in the “olden days,” when you had to take down storm windows. As long as the screens are out, maybe I’ll get around to washing the windows inside. One year, when my grandsons visited during spring cleaning time, I paid them to do the windows—50 cents per window, per grandson. It cost $40.00 just for the main floor, but it was worth it to see them working together. They were around nine and ten at the time…I miss those days.
By Marge Shoemaker
All winter, I’ve been trying to find time to do some genealogical digging into our four family trees. When the COVID quarantine started, I managed to trace each family line back five to six hundred years by following the men. My mother-in-law’s family traced back to a fellow named Twig… the perfect start to a family tree, wouldn’t you agree? Now I need to get more details by doing research on a rainy day and following the impetus for sorting through and labeling family photos. My kids have mentioned that they don’t know much about their heritage...I can make the results a Christmas gift next year if I re-establish my priorities. Going through photos reminds me of the family and friends I’ve lost contact with. Sometimes I forget that not everyone is on social media. I hope to renew and re-establish some of those relationships. I’ve received cards from friends over the past year. One card was expressing condolences in case the person named in the included obituary was a relative (the last name was the same). The deceased wasn’t related to me, but I appreciated the contact and dropped my friend a note, thanking her for caring. Refresh the house, clean the yard, re-establish priorities, and brighten relationships. Everyone benefits. Happy spring!

Pet Care While You’re Away
Kindness and Consideration for Your Pet
By Jackie Byers
We lavish our pets with attention when we’re together, so it’s only natural that we would want them well-attended when we’re away. Whether you need someone to walk your dog daily while you’re at work, stay at your home and feed your cats while you’re out of town, or provide a place to stay and interact with other animals, there are pet professionals out there to cater to your needs. Kenneling your pet at home may work for an hour or two, but it’s not an all-day solution. Many dogs can find a way to open the sturdiest kennel. Pets on the loose may chew furniture or forget their potty training. Once bad behavior starts, it’s difficult to stop. Consider a nearby doggie daycare or kennel. You should tour the site, asking questions about pet care, scheduling, and amenities. Find out what you’ll need to provide in the way of food or supplies and what is provided by the facility. One popular amenity is live-streaming cameras so owners can check on their pets throughout the day. Dogs need outdoor space to exercise and relieve themselves. This should be a supervised, clean, controlled area. How the animals are cared for inside is also important. Indoor play space needs to be well-sized and cleaned regularly. For social pets, other boarding animals to play with are a bonus. Usually, at such facilities, dogs are separated by size and type, not breed. Pets also like their private time—especially cats. Does the facility provide individual spaces with comfortable places to rest? Do they have units for multiple dogs or cats to stay together? If you place more than one pet in day care, having them board together may increase their comfort. Having a veterinarian on call where your pet stays is important, especially if your pet has special health needs. If your pet will need medication administered, be sure to find out in advance whether or not the facility can manage your pet’s health needs. Another option for pet care is home boarding, when your pet stays at the pet care pro’s home. This doesn’t necessarily mean that your pet will be the only pet there—many home boarders have their own pets and take on multiple clients at the same time. Your questions should be the same as with a kennel: How many other animals will be present? Is a private resting place provided? How often are animals taken outside? Is the outdoor time supervised? Is the area secure and clean, away from the street? Will your pet be walked daily? With home boarding, you may need to provide more of your pet’s supplies than you would at a kennel—be sure to ask. 52
March 2022
If your pet gets anxious outside the home or needs to be the only pet, you might consider hiring a pet sitter to stay at your home while you’re away. (Bonus: The pet sitter can also be paid to bring in the mail, water the plants, and the like.) Make sure this person is bonded and insured, to protect you both. Have potential sitters meet your pets in advance to make sure it’s a good match. Some pet care businesses employ a team of contractors who offer home pet care in the form of overnight stays, daytime visits, or daily walks. These businesses do background checks on their sitters (and should also do one on clients). They usually carry umbrella liability insurance policies. The next step up is a pet concierge. They also have a bonded list of caregivers who work either in their own homes or in your home. The difference is that concierge services typically charge clients an annual fee, and the client can then arrange for last-minute pet care whenever the need arises. Take the time to find a professional who will give your pet the same care you would provide. It’s sure to give you peace of mind while you’re away. Some day care facilities call themselves dog spas. They can provide nail trimming, bathing, hair cutting, ear cleaning, and brushing. Day spas offer short and long term boarding. You need to supply your dog’s food, feeding dish, and leash. Familiar items increase your pet’s comfort level. If you are boarding your dog for several days or weeks while you travel for business or pleasure, the same steps apply. Visit the facility you are considering and ask the same questions. Dog boarding kennels are easy to locate and all have slightly different routines. You may want to take your dog with you for your tour to see how he likes the place and how he adjusts to having many other dogs around. Pink Shoe Cleaning Crew “Let Us Do the Dirty Work”
By Toni Arndt
Everyone wants to have a clean home, but busy schedules can make it challenging to keep up. Do you find yourself cleaning on the weekends after a busy week? Do you end up taking shortcuts just to get the job done? Would you like more free time to do things you enjoy? Pink Shoe Cleaning Crew, a residential cleaning company, is ready to make your home shine. Zach Stephens began his entrepreneurial journey alongside his father as co-owner of an industrial recycling business for 12 years. His father’s declining health prompted the decision to sell the company so his father could retire and focus on seeking healthcare solutions. While helping his father find answers, Zach began searching for a business to acquire. “I wanted a business that I could be passionate about, and then focus on making improvements,” he says. In 2017, an opportunity arose to purchase Pink Shoe Cleaning Crew, a locally-owned cleaning business that had opened in 2010. “The company had a good reputation, and I knew it was the right business for me.” Pink Shoe Cleaning Crew performs weekly or bi-weekly residential cleaning services. “We’ve found that only offering recurring cleaning services allows our management team to attend to our regular customers with much better care than when we also did one-time cleanings,” Zach asserts. That said, the company does accommodate special requests from existing customers. At each appointment, a supervisor-led crew of two cleaners cleans a house from top to bottom in one to three hours, depending upon the size of the home and the scope of the cleaning. Kitchen floors are vacuumed, mopped, and edged. Counters, backsplashes, and appliances are cleaned. The living area and bedroom floors are vacuumed or mopped and edged, and surfaces—including ceiling fans—are dusted. Bathroom floors are mopped, counters and backsplashes are cleaned, and sinks, tubs, showers, and toilets are disinfected. Mirrors are also cleaned, and trash is taken out. Zach realizes that there are plenty of cleaning company options in Omaha. He is continually improving systems and processes at Pink Shoe Cleaning Crew to better serve his customers and employees. He believes that communication is vital to providing excellent customer service. “We have a proprietary customer management system in place to make sure that things don’t fall through the cracks,” he says. “We hear from customers that they appreciate our communication and our thorough cleans.” What should you consider when selecting a cleaning service? “Quality training is crucial,” Zach advises. “How are employees trained? After training, who is checking on the cleaning crew and holding them accountable?” What
services are included in a standard clean? Does the compaTobie and Zach Stephens, ny provide its own equipment and cleaning Owners supplies? What time of day does the company show up? Is the company insured and bonded? “Customers also need to decide whether a solo cleaner or a cleaning company is the right option for them,” Zach notes. A solo cleaner may be the right option for those who want to deal with the same person for everything. Because they work alone, however, solo cleaners are likely to have less flexible scheduling and may not have a backup if they are sick or on vacation. Additionally, they may or may not be able to handle special requests. A cleaning company has staff to answer the phones and has more scheduling flexibility. “We offer a window of time, such as morning or afternoon,” Zach explains. “Our cleaning hours are between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to ensure we are not there before people go to work or after they return home.” Pink Shoe Cleaning Crew does its best to use the same team for each customer; however, it may not always be possible. Customer changes, employee schedules, and routing structures all affect cleaning crew assignments. Zach is grateful for his hard-working employees. “Cleaning is a profession that sometimes doesn’t get the level of respect it deserves,” Zach asserts. “It is a hard, physical job that a person really has to love to stick with it. Thankfully, many of our customers recognize this. I think it’s important to point out that professional cleaners are really deserving of recognition.” Zach finds it rewarding to make a positive difference in people’s lives. “We get to help people go home and relax at the end of the week. If you have an organized space, it can have a significant and positive impact on your life,” he concludes. Pink Shoe Cleaning Crew is located at 2210 South 156th Circle, in Omaha. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Call 402-330-0930 for more information or to schedule an appointment. You can find them online at pinkshoecleaningcrew.com. Auto Glass Repair
A Chip Off the Old Windshield
By Linda Sutherland
Whatever it was, it came at you with enough force to chip your windshield glass. Yes, a flying piece of debris has done its evil damage, and now you are faced with a decision. Do you ignore it and hope it goes away? Do you get it fixed before it snakes its way across the windshield? Do you throw in the towel and just replace the windshield altogether? First of all, thank your windshield for doing its job and stopping that debris from hitting you in the forehead. Second? Don’t ignore the damage. Windshield chips of any size should be repaired as soon as possible. Even the tiniest of chips can expand quickly, particularly in extreme temperatures (hot or cold). Over time, dirt and contaminants can get into the chip and be very difficult to remove. Additionally, moisture can seep in between layers of glass, leading to fogging and visibility issues. A professional auto glass restorer will use special tools and resin to fill in the chip. The resin that they use gives the glass a watertight seal. This restores the windshield’s original strength and stops the chip from expanding into a crack. Most
glass repair professionals will now come to your home or office to fix a chip, so there’s no need to be without a vehicle during the repair. You may have seen DIY kits out there that claim to be the supplies you need to fix a windshield chip yourself. Professionals would like to point out that if you mess it up, it can’t be undone…and it may void your warranty. It’s best to leave the job to the pros. In some cases, even small chips may mean that the windshield needs to be replaced entirely. If the chip is in the driver’s direct field of vision, or if there are more than three chips in the windshield, the whole thing needs to be replaced. If the chip has already turned into a crack—and this can happen

Home Remodeling
See Your Home in a New Light
By Toni Arndt
Since the onset of the pandemic two years ago, people have been spending more time at home. Home has always been a refuge, but many of us now also need office space, studying space, and increased entertaining areas. This need for multi-functionality has led some homeowners to purchase a new home. For others, the best choice has been to remodel their existing home to fit their new lifestyle. Which projects give homeowners the best return on their investment? Remodeling a kitchen, bathroom, or family room generally provides the most significant benefit; enhancing a master suite usually does the same. Remodeling does not necessarily mean a complete overhaul. Remodeling a room may include a package of smaller changes, like fresh paint, new surfaces, updated fixtures or appliances, and new furnishings. Remodeling does require attention to planning and budgeting, but a complete renovation will likely require consideration of additional factors. In all cases, planning will minimize stress and undesirable surprises. Create a remodeling plan to establish wants and needs as well as a project timeline. The timeline should include prepping the area and shipping and delivery of materials, in addition to the actual work period. Set a project budget that includes the costs of materials, labor, fixtures, appliances, finishes, and building permits (if necessary). Include a reserve amount for unexpected costs. Once a budget is set, a decision needs to be made about financing. Several options are available, depending on the project scope, including paying out of pocket, getting a personal loan, mortgage refinancing, and a home equity line of credit (HELOC). A simple option is paying with savings; there is no interest and no paperwork. Personal loans may make sense for smaller amounts because they have lower upfront costs and short life spans. Mortgage refinancing may make sense when interest rates are low. A HELOC is a good option for owners with a lot of equity. With a budget and financing in place, what’s next? Making design decisions, complying with building codes and zoning laws, obtaining required permits, and hiring tradespeople are a few components that homeowners need to consider. At each step, there are professionals trained to help guide your decisions. Architects are trained professionals who can help navigate through the remodeling process, designing a space that meets your needs and budget. Making changes to a design with your architect is more cost-efficient than changing your mind during remodeling. (Such late-stage changes are called “change orders” and can be quite costly.) Once a design is finalized, the architect provides detailed drawings and specifications that can be used to obtain bids from contractors. Additionally, an architect can help select a qualified contractor for the project. 56
March 2022
During the remodeling process, decisions must be made about materials and finishes for flooring, wall coverings, countertops, lighting, and window treatments. Interior designers have expertise in design and aesthetics to visualize a finished project. These professionals understand how lighting, textures, furniture, and flow work together to create a cohesive and stylish space. An interior decorator can help select appropriate vendors for the different components needed in the project. How do you choose a contractor for your remodeling project? First, ask your architect or interior designer for recommendations. Next, keep in mind several questions to ask when interviewing contractors. How many years have they been in business? How many homes have they remodeled? Will they give you references from previous clients? Are they licensed and insured? What is their warranty? How is the change order process handled during construction if a project element is revised? How are change order costs determined? Who will be in charge of your project? Who is your contact person? What’s the inspection process during construction? When will you receive your bid? What’s the timeline for construction? The answers to questions like these will help you select the right contractor for your project. Top renovation trends in 2022 include home office spaces in this era of working remotely, as well as enhanced outdoor spaces and features as people entertain in their own backyards. Textured wallpapers, paints, and fabrics add dimension and visual interest. Specialized outlets that allow faster charging of electronic devices without adaptors will enhance technology needs. Turning a bedroom into a side-hustle space provides an area for entrepreneurs. Green paint colors, green plants, “green” materials, and bigger windows and doors connect to Mother Nature. Today’s homeowners want durable surfaces that are sleek but can handle extra scrubbing. Consider remodeling if your home has lost its luster, needs updating, or doesn’t meet your evolving needs. With fresh style, improved functionality, and increased comfort, you’ll see your house in a new light and enjoy spending time at home. Refinishing Your Wood Floor New Life in an Old Floor
By Anne Yankus
Have your hardwood floors seen better days? Are they suffering from scraping chair legs, pet claws, and all manner of children’s rough play? Perhaps you’ve recently discovered some hardwood floors hidden under carpeting that finally had to go! If the condition of your hardwood flooring makes you sigh, consider refinishing. Keep in mind that not every wood floor can be refinished. First of all, it only works with solid wood planks. Flooring made from engineered wood cannot be sanded down in the same way and will need to be replaced. If your flooring has any structural damage, extreme wear, or other severe damage such as warping, chipping, or stains, you’ll need to start looking at replacements instead. Other factors that can prevent refinishing are boards that wiggle or move or boards that are too thin. Modern planks can be refinished many times over the course of their life, but planks from earlier than 1920 were milled to a thinner standard and can only be refinished once or twice before splintering. Once you’ve determined that your floor can be refinished, there are a few different ways to go about it. One of the easiest ways to refinish a floor with only minor surface damage is called screening. The process of screening hardwood floors removes the top layer of existing polyurethane finish without sanding down any of the actual wood. A wood floor can
typically be screened using a large floor polisher, though this will not work on a wood floor that’s been coated with any type of wax. Screening will not be sufficient for any floor with scratches or stains that have penetrated into the wood. Sanding is more costly than screening but is also more thorough. Sanding will bring your floor boards down to their natural wood by removing all wax, polyurethane, scratches, and stains. While this process can be done with rented equipment, it’s far more labor-intensive and messier than screening, so to get it done right the first time, you’ll definitely want to hire a professional. Next, it’s time to look at finishes. Oil-based polyurethane finishes turn a nice light amber color over time and are typically the most durable. On the downside, they are slow drying (at minimum, 24 hours) and emit noxious fumes while wet. If you’d prefer your natural wood without the amber finish on top, clear-drying water-based polyurethane is for you. Water-based also has a much quicker drying time (seven to

eight hours) and has the advantage of being more environmentally-friendly than oil-based. It contains fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs), is better for your indoor air quality, is non-flammable, and applicator cleanup only involves soap and water. If you’re not a fan of your wood’s natural color or the light amber oilbased finish, you can always stain the wood before adding the top coat or finish. You’ll only be able to stain the flooring if you’ve chosen to sand down the previous finish (screening will not suffice). Stains come in a variety of natural colors from dark mahogany to white or even gray. If your natural wood is a darker color than what you’d like the finished product to be, you can go through a bleaching process to lighten the wood color first. Bleaching isn’t recommended for use on exotic woods with rich red tones like mahogany. Between the sanding or screening labor and the cure time for the finish, it can take anywhere from a day to a full week to have your wood flooring refinished. On top of that, you have a week of displaced furniture, sawdust, and finish fumes that can spread throughout your whole house, no matter how small the refinished area may be. Because of all this, pros absolutely recommend that you find an alternative living situation while the floors are being worked on. When all the work is done and you’re back in your home, you’ll still want to wait a good 48 to 72 hours before replacing your heavy furniture. Once you’ve refinished your floors, you’ll obviously want to keep them shiny and new for as long as possible. The best ways to protect your floors are simple: adding felt pads to the bottom of your furniture and keeping pets’ nails trimmed, regular vacuuming and mopping with a moist microfiber pad, and avoiding harsh cleaners that contain ammonia, vinegar, wax, polish, or oil soaps. Setting up a regular maintenance plan with a flooring professional is also ideal. With proper care, you shouldn’t have to think about refinishing again for another seven to ten years! Le Voltaire French Restaurant Chef Wilson Calixte
By Kate Beiting
Perhaps you have been lucky enough to visit France and take a stroll in the City of Lights. On that stroll, you discovered a hidden treasure amongst the shops—a cozy bistro in the heart of Paris that you’ve been dreaming about ever since you got back. Great news! Right here in Omaha, you can visit Le Voltaire French Restaurant. The moment you walk into the cozy foyer, you know that this experience will be memorable. When I first met Chef (and owner) Wilson Calixte, he was on the phone, ordering fresh fish—turbot, salmon, halibut—for an upcoming menu. “I am no longer just the chef,” he says. “I am doing many jobs—ordering, cooking, payroll, mopping, dishes—even cleaning bathrooms if I must.” His enthusiasm and good humor are readily apparent when he speaks about his restaurant. “We are not ‘snooty tooty’ here,” he says with a smile. “We want everyone to come and eat at our restaurant.” Since 2001, Le Voltaire has been building a solid reputation as a restaurant that is consistently excellent. After working at Le Voltaire for 11 years, former Head Chef Wilson Calixte purchased Le Voltaire in August from the original owner, Cedric Fichepain. (Cedric still owns the Le Petit Paris French Bakery next door.) Chef Wilson wants to be clear that there is new ownership but that the roots of the restaurant are the same. “My vision is to continue the excellent reputation that Le Voltaire has,” he says. “We are introducing a few new items, with special fusion dishes added, but the core menu will not change.” This energetic chef is one of the reasons the restaurant is a culinary landmark in Omaha, but it has been a long journey for Chef Wilson. He has vivid memories of his childhood in Haiti, eager to help his mother in the kitchen mostly because he was hungry. “As a child, I wanted to be an engineer—you know, a top guy of some big successful business,” he says with a grin. A career in engineering was not in his future. Orphaned at age 10, he left Haiti for Brooklyn to be raised by his sister. After high school, he began working in restaurants, starting as a dishwasher and working his way up through line cooking and management. “I found my passion in the industry,” he recalls. Chef Wilson cites his positive cheer as one of the fundamental pillars of his success (and hard work) through his life. “You must love what you do—work your passion. Otherwise, it is just work, with no joy.” Chef Wilson was unfamiliar with Nebraska until he met a young Brooklyn woman who was home on a break—she was a teacher in Nebraska. After a long-distance romance, he followed his heart and came to Omaha. After working at several restaurants, he was hired at Le 62

Voltaire. “I observed Cedric, I listened, did what Chef Wilson Calixte, Owner he did, asked questions, and kept polishing my skills,” he says. “Not only did I pay attention to the cooking, but also to the business part of running a restaurant.” After 11 years of expanding his talent, the opportunity to purchase Le Voltaire was the next step on his journey. “This was what I had dreamed of, being the owner of my own restaurant. This is the American dream! I am a young, Black chef-owner—it does not get much better than that.” Chef enjoys being involved in several community programs, including Dining with Dignity and the Quest Forward Academy. French classics remain on the menu, with signature dishes like coq au vin, duck cassoulet, French onion soup, and filet mignon. Chef Wilson also introduces specials that showcase dishes with Haitian-fusion notes. “French and Haitian foods have many of the same components and flavors—it is fun for me to share these with our guests.” One of the new favorites is chicken with a mango barbeque sauce. Le Voltaire’s wine list is updated regularly and has repeatedly received the annual Wine Spectator Award. Don’t forget brunch! Le Voltaire’s Sunday brunch menu includes items like omelets, croque monsieur or madame, quiche, Cajun duck and waffle, a kid’s menu, and a variety of brunch cocktails. Whether you’re new to French and Haitian food or already a regular at Le Voltaire, make it a point to enjoy dining at this delightful west Omaha restaurant sometime soon. Chef Wilson’s culinary vision and unlimited enthusiasm for food continues to offer an exceptional dining experience to Omaha foodies. Le Voltaire is located at 569 North 155th Plaza, in the Pepperwood Plaza, and is open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday, for lunch on Fridays, and for brunch on Sundays. Positive Perspective
Self-Happiness
By Janet Van deWalle
Be Your Own Best Friend
Okay, grab your laptop or a pen and a piece of paper. I’m going to ask you an important question. Please keep in mind that this question does not involve your husband, children, parents, work, friends, or family. Ready? Here it is: What brings you self-happiness? “Self-happiness refers to a sense of happiness or satisfaction with one’s self.” —Courtney E. Ackerman, MA
A couple of weeks ago, my husband Manny asked me that very question. Honestly, I was taken aback. I realized that no one…including me…had ever asked me this question in my entire life. I was flabbergasted when I realized that I couldn’t come up with a single item. So what did I do? I went and talked to a wise and trusted woman friend. She explained to me that most of us (women) spend very little time thinking about what makes us happy with ourselves. We weren’t brought up that way. We are very good at listening to what makes everyone else happy. I’ll bet you can tell me in a heartbeat what makes those around you happy. Your husband loves golf. Your son’s favorite band. Your daughter’s favorite sport. And on and on. But you? “We just need to be kinder to ourselves. If we treated ourselves the way we treated our best friend, can you imagine how much better off we would be?” —Meghan Markle
Manny suggested that I start a list. It took me a while—I kept coming up with outside influences that made me happy. After about a week, I came up with several things. I love who I am when I am listening to music (recorded or live), watching beautiful sunsets, seeing movies, reading, learning about business, and diving deep into my psyche! “Women need real moments of solitude and self-reflection to balance out how much of ourselves we give away.” —Barbara De Angelis
At times, I feel that women become slaves to the task of ensuring that everyone else in their lives is happy. In that process, there is no room for realizing what makes us happy with ourselves. Of course, Manny, my kids, my grandkids, my family, and my friends bring me happiness. What this question that Manny presented to me did was make me wake up, reflect, and think about ME for once. “Can you remember who you were, before the world told you who you should be?” —Charles Bukowski
I am asking each and every one of you to carve out some time for yourself to answer this very important question. I’m hoping it does for you what it did for me: It made me think, learn about myself, be grateful and amazed at myself, and… and…it made me happy with me!
