Let’s Be Grateful!
Hello, all! Thanksgiving is just around the corner. It’s a time for connections with family and friends we haven’t seen in a long time, great food, and let’s not forget the football…for many people, Thanksgiving is the best holiday of the year. Quite honestly, back in the day, I was so busy with building my business, I found myself viewing the holiday as something to survive. Thanksgiving week felt like a marathon. I had to go grocery shopping, which typically happened until the day before Thanksgiving. I would then be up very late on Wednesday night, cooking with family and friends. Next, I would fall into bed, setting an early alarm to make certain that the 24-pound turkey had enough time to cook for our 3:00 dinner. That dinner would be over in what seemed like the blink of an eye, and then it was time to clean up. Whew! Just thinking about it makes me tired. Now, Thanksgiving is a whole lot calmer. My brother Steve has taken the reins for the big family meal. Manny and I take the Thanksgiving holiday as a time for us to stop and reflect upon all that we have to be thankful for in our lives. Gratitude is a feeling tone that Manny and I strive to nourish every single day of our marriage. Thanksgiving just gives us time to shine a spotlight on it! Recognizing every blessing that we have has helped us feel more connected with one another and more loving toward all of our friends and family. Manny and I have been married for just over four years, and we know how important it is to create our own traditions. I love this new approach to a holiday that I used to just try to survive! I hope you all have a very special Thanksgiving…regardless of how you and your loved ones celebrate it! Manny and I would like to wish the best to our military members, many of whom are stationed overseas. We thank you all for your commitment! One final note: One of our longtime writers, Sharon Knierim, passed away one year ago. Sharon wrote for us for decades. Roxy and I had always referred to her as Omaha’s own Erma Bombeck. She was a wonderful human being who brought so much joy to her family and friends, as well as to all of our readers. Please turn to Insightful View on pages 46 and 47 to read one of Sharon’s columns…we’re re-running it in her honor. Thank you, Sharon, for your wit, for your kindness, and for being with Women’s Edition for so many years.

Morning Company Breakfast Casserole
Mix one 12-ounce can of evaporated milk with 5 eggs; set aside. In a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, spread 3 cups of hashbrowns, 1 cup of cubed cooked ham, sliced green onions and green or red pepper to taste, and 1 cup of grated cheese. Pour the egg mixture on top. Add salt and pepper as desired. Refrigerate overnight. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes until bubbly. Slow Cooker Game Day Spinach Dip
Mix together two 8-ounce packages of softened cream cheese, 1 cup of sour cream, 1 or 2 cans of drained and chopped artichokes, 1 cup of shredded parmesan or mozzarella cheese, and one 10-ounce bag of fresh spinach (chopped) or a package of frozen (thawed and drained—pat with a paper towel so it isn’t so watery). Add black pepper and red pepper flakes, onion powder, and garlic powder as desired. (You could also use fresh diced onion and garlic.) Place the mixture into a slow cooker and cook on low for 2 hours. Stir several times. Serve with sliced toasted garlic baguettes, seasoned crackers or pita chips, or assorted veggies.
Maude’s Roasted Cranberry Sauce
Rinse 1 pound of fresh cranberries. Place the berries in a 9x13-inch roasting dish. Add 1 and 1/4 cups of sugar, 1/4 cup of water, and 1 Tablespoon of orange zest. Stir. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 30–40 minutes, until the berries start bursting. Stir several times. Cool. Stir in 1 jigger of brandy and refrigerate.
Baked Corn Casserole
Mix together 2 eggs, one 8-ounce box of cornbread mix (like
Jiffy), 1 cup of sour cream, 1/2 cup of melted butter, 1 can of whole kernel corn (drained), 1 can of creamed corn, and a pinch of sugar. Pour into a greased 8-inch or 9-inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 45–50 minutes.
Complete Chicken Bake
Pour 1 cup of rice (not instant) into a lightly greased 9x13inch baking dish. On top of the rice, place chicken pieces—a whole cut-up chicken or pieces like drumsticks, thighs, and breasts. Mix together a package of dry onion soup mix, 1 and 1/2 cups of water, and 1 can of cream of mushroom soup. Pour the mixture over the chicken. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 90 minutes.
Richard’s Baked Holiday Yams
Boil 3 pounds (approximately) of yams until tender. Cool, peel, and mash. Mix with 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg, 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/4 cup of melted butter, 1/2 cup of cream, 1/3 cup of chopped pecans, and 1/3 cup of raisins (optional). Pour into a greased baking dish and top with 12 to 16 marshmallows. Bake at 350 degrees for 25–30 minutes.

Merry Widow Sammies
Spread 4 pieces of bread with a bit of mayo. Pile on slices of thinly sliced turkey, a dollop of cranberry sauce, and 2 pieces of Swiss cheese. For variety, you can spread a bit of leftover dressing under the cheese. Broil until the cheese is melted (or use the toaster oven).
Harvest Time Pumpkin Bread
In a large bowl, whisk together 1 and 3/4 cups of flour, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg, 1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves, 1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger, and 3/4 teaspoon of salt. In another bowl, whisk 2 eggs with 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, 3/4 cup of brown sugar, 1 and 1/2 cups of pumpkin puree, 1/2 cup of vegetable oil, and 1/3 cup of orange juice. Lightly mix the dry ingredients with the wet. If desired, fold in 1/2 cup of chocolate chips, nuts, or raisins. Pour the batter into a greased loaf pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 55–65 minutes, testing for doneness with a toothpick. Cool for an hour, remove bread from pan, and slice.
Chocolate Pecan Pie
Place a homemade or ready-made pie crust into a pie pan, crimp the edges, and set aside. In a large bowl, mix together 3/4 cup of light corn syrup, 3/4 cup of sugar, a dash of salt, 3 eggs, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and 3 Tablespoons of honey. Mix well. Add 1/2 cup (1 stick) of melted butter and mix well. Pour the mixture into the pie crust. Top with 1 and 1/2 cups of pecan pieces and 1/2 cup of semisweet chocolate chips. Bake on a cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 70 minutes, until the filling is bubbly.
Snickerdoodle Cookies
Mix 1/3 cup of sugar with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and set
aside. In a large bowl, mix 3 cups of flour, 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar (it’s in the spice aisle), 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. In another large bowl, mix 1 cup of soft butter with 1 and 1/3 cups of sugar, 1 large egg plus 1 egg yolk, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla. Combine the egg mixture with the flour mixture. Scoop the dough into balls and roll each one into the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Bake on parchment paper at 375 degrees for 10 minutes. Cool and remove.
The Birthday Cake
Mix together 2 cups of sugar, 1 and 3/4 cups of flour, 3/4 cup of baking cocoa, 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of salt. In a mixer on low, beat 2 eggs, 1 cup of milk, 1/2 cup of vegetable oil, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla. Slowly add the sugar mixture to the bowl, along with 1 cup of boiling water (or hot coffee). Pour into a greased Bundt pan (this is a thin batter), 2 greased 9-inch cake pans, or a greased 9x13-inch pan. Bake for 30–35 minutes at 350 degrees. Cool. Frost as desired.
Apple Harvest Gallette
Beat an egg white until slightly frothy. Spread a pie crust (homemade or purchased) on a parchment-lined cookie sheet and brush a small amount of the egg white onto the crust. In a bowl, mix 3/4 cup of sugar, 2 Tablespoons of cornstarch, 1 Tablespoon of ground cinnamon, and 4–5 cups of peeled and thinly sliced apples. Mound the apples into the center of the pie crust. Fold the edges of the crust up toward the center of the apples, pleating as you go. Brush the edges with the rest of the egg white wash. Bake at 425 degrees for 30–35 minutes.

Cozy Up to Cooler Temps! Outerwear Trends for 2024
By Holly Bell
As the cool breezes turn to brisk winds, it’s human nature to want to curl up by a warm fire, cuddle under a blanket, and enjoy the fragrant scents and flavors of fall and winter. Cold weather brings new challenges to fashionistas. It can be hard to want to dress in anything other than a chunky sweater, your heaviest joggers, and boots. With a little bit of effort, you can still rock a variety of fashionable looks in the cold! Maxi coats are the statement coat trend for winter, with the long puffer coat becoming the favorite. This year, designers also introduced the padded coat, a relative of the puffer. Guaranteed to keep you cozy, both styles will be a welcome sight on frosty mornings. If you’re looking for something more on the tailored side, an ankle-grazing, belted herringbone or wool blend coat is an elegant outerwear option that works over any outfit, from jeans to eveningwear. Oversized coats are having a moment, keeping you warm and contemporary with minimal effort. For those of us who love furry soft things, faux fur is always a wonderful option. Shearling looks deliver not only warmth but style, too. Take, for instance, the shearling robe coat. It’s as if you never left the solace of your own cozy home. Robe coats work over everything and keep you snug all season long.
10
November 2023
Let’s not forget to mention the long leather coat this season. Whether it’s faux leather or the real thing, the stylish elegance cannot be beat. My favorite is the leather trench, which is a classic understated luxury. Speaking of leather—if you haven’t purchased a leather blazer yet, now is the time. Black is the usual choice, but brown is making a comeback this year, along with autumn golds and beautiful reds. There is no piece of clothing more versatile! It’s great as a jacket in the fall and can be worn under your coat during the winter. The blazer looks polished for work when worn with skirts or trousers, and it appears just as sharp worn on the weekend with jeans and a turtleneck or a plain white shirt. Let’s think about footwear for a moment. Sometimes, of course, you’ll be wearing your snow-proof boots. For less weather-conscious footwear,
www.womensedition.com
consider a pair of loafers. Chunky platform loafers have been in the forefront on social media. Stepping out in the preppy loafer will show you are a stylesmart fashionista. After numerous trend cycles, socks and hosiery are returning to the spotlight (they look great with a pair of loafers, by the way). Tights in all colors, knee socks, and the chunky variety are all a big part of the conversation this year. If you want to spice up your hosiery, you can spark your creativity with fishnet tights or a pair of chunky ribbed socks. Don’t be afraid of colorful tights to add some flair to your winter neutrals. Scarves are a necessity during the colder months, but they can also be great accessories. Many outerwear jackets and coats this year have scarves attached, which is a great idea. For outside-of-the-box ideas on how to wear scarves, just check out all the videos offered on social media. Layering is a buzzword for cold weather fashion. Begin with a thin, form-fitting top, then add a blouse or sweater in a contrasting shade. Vests are another hot item and work well as a layered option over a blouse. On the top, you can add a blazer for those really cold days. Keep in mind that each layer should be able to be worn individually; as you warm up, you can discard a layer without losing the statement of the outfit. Layering isn’t hard; it just takes some experimentation. With heavier clothing, it only makes sense to grab some chunky gold jewelry. Chunky is in and so fun to wear. Chanel-inspired chains are popular and appear on clothing, shoes, and handbags. Glittery jewelry is also rising in popularity. In fact, the motto as we move toward the holiday season will be Metallics Rule! Let yourself shine and sparkle this year! When we think of winter, our usual thought is black or gray, but keep an eye out for red as an on-point color this year. Don’t be afraid to spice it up, adding bright tones to your tried-and-true classic neutrals. Before the snow flies, clean up your closet and put together some fabulous layered outfits! Hang them up all put together in your closet so you can grab them quickly on a hurried morning. Then get outdoors while you can and enjoy the beauty of the changing landscape!

Absolute Tree Service Customer Value First
By Deborah Daley
Lebanese American writer Kahlil Gibran once said, “Trees are poems that the earth writes upon the sky.”In the Midwest, we are fortunate to view trees in all their wonder and splendor. We also have storms, however, that can wreak havoc on nature’s majestic landscape. Trees can seem strong and self-sustaining, but they require specialized care to thrive while sharing the landscape safely with their human neighbors. In Omaha, one of the most recognized family-owned firms providing such care is Absolute Tree Service. Jared and Liz Roe
Owned and operated by husband-and-wife team Jared and Liz Roe, the 16-year-old firm serves clients in Omaha, Bellevue, Blair, Plattsmouth, Springfield, Gretna, Papillion, La Vista, Waterloo, Valley, and Yutan. Jared is a licensed arborist, certified by the Nebraska Arborists Association, with more than 20 years of experience. “My husband was a climber and became interested in working on trees,” Liz says. “He was employed by other companies but decided to go out on his own.” It was actually through tree services that the couple met. “In 1997, a powerful storm hit the Omaha area. It knocked out trees and power lines at my family home,” Liz recalls. “Jared was part of the crew that fixed the trees. We got married the next year and have five boys.” The name of the company also has an interesting backstory. “People were not really using the internet to advertise at the time, and we wanted our company to be one of the first tree services you saw in the phone book. We looked for a word that began with A that described our services. ‘Absolute’ seemed fitting,” she adds. The group offers tree trimming and shaping, tree removal, hazardous limb removal, deadwood removal and stump removal, storm and emergency services, and cabling and bracing. Estimates are free! Jared or Tony (an estimator who has been with Absolute Tree Service for 10 years) will come out to make an assessment. “They’ll author a proposal based on your particular needs,” Liz says. The firm focuses on tree damage services and has a staff of five who are excellent climbers. They specialize in taking care of particularly tall trees or trees in tight angles that require unique methods of execution. In fact, other local firms call on Absolute Tree Service when they encounter a tree that needs these specialized techniques. In Liz’s view, the best way to develop long-term customers is to provide complete satisfaction, no matter what the client’s tree care needs may be. In fact, referral and repeat customers makeup the lion’s share of their business. “We have 12
November 2023
been doing this long enough that our work speaks for itself,” she says. “Our loyal customers tell others about their experience. It is the best marketing you can get.” John Furstenberg of Ponca Hills hires Absolute Tree Service for his primary home and for his cabin on the Platte River. “My yard in Ponca is like a forest, and they have been helping me for 12 years. They take care of the entire tree landscaping, keeping it in awesome shape and discussing with me what is needed and not needed. They are like one big family and have a connection that is great to witness. My wife will often cook them lunch or send them home with a jar of pickles. They are the best.” Janet East, a client of 13 years, echoes these sentiments. “Absolute has knowledgeable and friendly staff. Their crew is quick, clean, and professional, and their prices are reasonable,” she says. “I would recommend their services to anyone.” Liz is pleased to hear it. “We work hard to bring value to job execution,” she shares. “Tree services are not cheap, and our customers know that we will get the job done economically and efficiently. You can trust that we will do the job we say we will and that you will be satisfied.” Liz notes that there is a great deal of planning behind the scenes of safe tree work. Organization is paramount and includes gathering and locking down the crew, making sure you have the right tools and equipment, monitoring the weather, and ensuring that schedules are met. “Customers are often fascinated by our work and they, along with their neighbors, often come out and watch our process. It is amazing to see, especially how the crew climbs and cuts and dissects the tree with minimal invasiveness.” To learn more about Absolute Tree Service and how they can care for your landscape, visit them online at absolutetreeservicene.com. Their regular hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, but they do provide emergency services when needed. (October 23 – November 21)
It is your birthday month, and many of the experiences, plans, and actions of this year have been leading toward endings in some areas of your life. Let go of the things and thoughts that have left you in a mental and physical slump. The time has come for you to think ahead to new paths. Have faith that a new direction will be a better direction. Sagittarius (Nov 22 – Dec 21) Impediments that seem to block your path can also be stepping stones toward improving your financial picture. Careful planning and new beginnings in business affairs are emphasized this month. Your leadership ability could put you in an influential role. Capricorn (Dec 22 – Jan 19) Cooperation and sharing with others are highlighted this month. You need to be balanced and flexible. Be very careful to keep your promises, social or otherwise. Trust is hard to rebuild! You are in a very creative and expressive period. Aquarius (Jan 20 – Feb 18) This is a good time to enjoy life and allow others extra pleasure from your creativity. People will want to be around you. Know when to keep your impulses in check. Communication will be most important. Pisces (Feb 19 – Mar 20) You are in a creative re-awakening and are coming into your own. More than ever before, you need to be you and do what you want to do in your own unique way. Aries (Mar 21-Apr 19) Communication will be a recurring theme this month. Situations will arise that test your interaction skills. Everyone around you will be keenly interested in what you say and will want to be in your group. Taurus (Apr 20-May 20) Bulls will face communication challenges this month. Everyone will be paying attention to what you say. Though

self-expression is the right way forward, you should consider your words carefully before you speak them out loud. Gemini (May 21-Jun 20) Pay attention to current personal business activities that will keep your long-term goals on track. Only then should you look out for other business opportunities, which should be plentiful this month. Cancer (Jun 21-Jul 22) If there is an opportunity to travel, take it— even if it’s just for a couple of days. A sense of freedom is necessary for your well-being at this time. Leo (Jul 23- Aug 22) Domestic activities that have been put on the back burner need to be addressed presently. Examine and eliminate your problems one at a time, for it is far too difficult to deal with them all at once. Solve those that are solvable, and give the rest to the universe. Virgo (Aug 23 – Sep 22) Don’t be surprised if you feel alone in your world during this period. This past year has been intensely busy and full of changes that you could not control. A pause for self-evaluation is called for now. Libra (Sep 23 – Oct 22) Substantial increases in the material world can be yours due to the service and influence you have accumulated throughout the year. It is now time to reap the harvest of the good work that you have performed. This is a time for you to promote yourself.

A Woman’s Work
National Holidays
The When and the Why
By Deborah Daley
There are 11 federal holidays in the United States, when federal workers are guaranteed time off (and many of us non-federal employees enjoy a day off, too). People celebrate holidays for many reasons, including commemorating historical people and events or taking note of special days that have cultural or religious significance. I was aware of all 11 of these holidays, but I didn’t know the stories behind all of them. Do you? New Year’s Day: More than 5,000 years ago, the Babylonians celebrated the beginning of a new year. Traditionally, it is a time for a new start, and people often celebrate with drink, merriment, and the making of personal resolutions. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: This occasion commemorates the birthday of this chief spokesman for nonviolent activism and civil rights. The holiday was enshrined into law in 1983 as the third Monday of January. It was officially observed in all states for the first time in 2000. Valentine’s Day: There are many stories about the origin of this holiday. One of the most popular is that St. Valentine was an ancient Roman who was executed on February 14 in the year 270 (or thereabouts). His crime was performing marriages, which had been outlawed by emperor Claudius because he thought the Romans’ attachments to their families was stopping them from joining the army. This is how St. Valentine came to represent enduring love.
Presidents Day: In 1879, the birthday of George Washington (February 20th) was established as a federal holiday. In 1960, it was re-established as the third Monday in February to ensure that federal workers would get a three-day weekend. Over time, it has also become associated with President Abraham Lincoln. St. Patrick’s Day: The patron saint of Ireland was a missionary named Patrick, who died on March 17th, 461. The holiday celebrates Irish culture and heritage. The shamrock is a popular symbol because St. Patrick used its three leaves to explain the Holy Trinity of Christianity. April Fool’s Day: Some say that this holiday dates to 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar, which started the year on April 1st, to the Gregorian calendar, which started the year on January 1st. People who weren’t aware of the switch or refused to acknowledge it became the butt of jokes or the subject of hoaxes and were sometimes known as “April fools.”

Show Some Aloha for Lahaina Visit Maui This Season
By Jackie Williams
Maui needs you! If you ever needed a reason to go on vacation, here is a sunny destination you can travel to for a good cause. Since the wildfires ravished the west side of the island, the locals have suffered. How can you help? Opinions vary. Some feel they should avoid travel to Hawaii until things are fully repaired, while others are purposely going to the islands, particularly to Maui, despite the damage, to contribute to the tourism industry. How do we know what to do?
According to the September Maui Updates on GoHawaii. com (Hawaii’s official tourism website), “Respectful travel to any of the Hawaiian Islands, including the accessible areas of Maui, is welcomed and encouraged, now more than ever… Your visit will support Hawaii’s businesses and workers that rely on tourism for their families’ livelihood.” Support is appreciated when travelers “visit with aloha and compassion, support local businesses, and participate in unique volunteer opportunities throughout the islands.” They do ask, though, that you show respect by staying away from the area affected by the wildfires. This should not be an issue; your travel agent can book your trip to a fantastic property on the island where you will enjoy yourself while exploring the rest of this tropical paradise. There is still so much of Maui to discover! Scuba diving, snorkeling, whale watching, fishing, and all of the other water sports are waiting for you and your family. An early morning trip to Haleakala is ripe for sunrise snapshots and exhilarating downhill bike rides. The road to Hana and waterfall fatigue is there for your hiking and driving pleasure. And your tee time at one of Wailea’s manicured golf courses will still be stunning. There is always an event, concert, or show to catch at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului. There are so many places on the island to go! Visit plantations, craft fairs, and the local farmers markets. Speaking of fresh produce, have you ever eaten an avocado or mango bigger than the size of your hand? You will find them here and at roadside huts. If you are the active type, sign up for a 5K or marathon. Rent a bike and ride along the beaches, through local neighborhoods, and past resorts. You can stop and chat with the locals and other tourists as you spot huge sea turtles on the beach. Show up at family-friendly Friday Town Parties in different areas each week for some evening entertainment and food truck fun. A helpful tip is to look on social media for pop-up shops around the island. This is how you will find local artists and artisans like Teak & Taro Jewelry, with owner and designer Laura’s beautifully simple and delicate ocean-inspired jewelry, and Jonerz, who was an Artist in Residence at the 18

Four Seasons Resort Wailea and painted a 100-foot mural in Kihei. Search online for Wailea Village, Fairmont Kealani, and Made in Maui County Festival to find locations and details ahead of time. Instead of using national companies for a rental car, book with Allsave Car Rental and help a local family business. Swap your Starbucks for Kraken Coffee, served up in various locations via food trucks. Women’s Edition readers love supporting small businesses at home; why not make a point to do the same while you’re traveling? Little things like this can go a long way to show love to the Maui locals and, little by little, help them get back on their feet. Can you volunteer while on holiday? If so, take advantage of the Malama Hawaii Program, where industry partners and community organizations offer a variety of opportunities to help in different ways, doing things that you will enjoy. Opportunities range from reforestation, habitat stewardship, sustainable farming, cleaning up the coastline, picking up debris on hiking trails, and organizing and sorting incoming donations. You can even qualify for a special discount or a free night at participating hotels. Experiences like this will last a lifetime, and doing it alongside your kids creates great memories while lending a hand to those in need. Show some love for Lahaina and the west side by booking (or rebooking) travel to Maui. Two of its beaches are listed as TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best 2023. At this time of year, sitting on the beach under the warm sun with an umbrella in your drink sounds pretty good to those of us in the Midwest, and you’ll be doing it for a good cause. Consider a trip that gives back. Sources for this article included: allsavecarrental.com, gohawaii. com, krakencoffeemaui.com, kiheifridays.com, and mauinuistrong. info.

Memory Loss
Understanding & Coping with It
By Deborah Daley
We’re all getting older, and that means dealing with the health concerns that come with advanced age. One of these concerns that gets a lot of attention is memory loss. Of course, everyone forgets things at times—where we put the car keys or our glasses. Some degree of memory problems, as well as challenges with other thinking skills, are a common part of aging. It’s important to recognize the difference between what you might call a“senior moment”and serious memory loss.

It can be hard to decide whether a loved one with dementia needs a level of care that only a facility can provide. Consider these questions: Is your loved one unsafe at home? Is their health at risk? Are their care needs beyond their own abilities, even with your help? Are you neglecting your own needs in caring for your loved one? Would the structure and guided interaction at a care facility benefit your loved one? If you answer yes to most of these questions, a memory care facility might be the best option. Memory care is the fastest growing sector of the senior housing market, with the number of units doubling over the past decade, according to the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing and Care. These facilities offer a safe, structured environment with set routines to lower stress. Specially trained staff assist with unique issues that result from memory loss. Daily activities like bathing, dressing, eating, and taking medications are accomplished with help from staff. Activities are designed to improve cognitive function and engage res-
idents in various stages of the disease. To mitigate wandering (a common symptom of dementia), these facilities have alarmed doors, enclosed outdoor spaces, and even tracking bracelets. AARP and the Alzheimer’s Association’s Community Resource Finder (communityresourcefinder. org) can help you generate a list of facilities to consider. Click on Housing Options and input the required data. Once you have a list, you should visit each facility in person. Of course, your loved one’s physician will also have recommendations. Memory loss is a health issue that many senior citizens experience. It’s important to know the signs and causes of severe memory loss so you know when it’s time to take action. Engaging in activities to slow down the disease and enhancing your knowledge of resources and facilities that are available can help you deal with this common issue. Are you searching for ways to decorate or freshen up your home? Do you need a unique gift idea? Have you considered a piece of original art? Debra Joy Groesser, a nationally renowned and award-winning artist, creates landscapes, seascapes, and portraits in her gallery located in downtown Ralston. Debra Joy Groesser Fine Art Gallery features original oil paintings and art-related gift items to fit every budget. The gallery also has segmented wood pieces created by Debra’s husband, Don Groesser, who happens to be Ralston’s mayor. In addition to paintings, visitors to the gallery will find limited edition prints, canvas tote bags, glassware, note cards, faux leather earrings, and children’s Christmas books illustrated by Debra. Decorative and functional wood pieces include vases, cheese and bread boards, salad bowls, wine stoppers, and Christmas ornaments. Debra has loved art since she was a young child. The children’s television program Romper Room featured one of Debra’s drawings when she was just three years old. At age 12, she won an Omaha World-Herald Coloring Contest and used the $25 paint store gift certificate to purchase art supplies. At age 14, she bought her first oil paints and found her passion. After graduating from Bellevue College with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Debra worked as a graphic artist for several years before deciding to stay home to raise her children. A few years later, she got into real estate and was asked by a home builder to create art renderings of his houses. Soon after, she received requests for renderings of commercial buildings and artistic note cards, which became a full-time business. With encouragement from her husband, Don, Debra taught art classes in their home. In 1996, she bought a building in downtown Ralston, where she opened a gallery the following year and taught pottery and painting classes. Five years later, an opportunity arose to travel and paint, and she closed the gallery. Space became available in the building again, and the gallery reopened in 2018. Debra is well known for her plein air impressionist landscape paintings. Plein air is a French term meaning “out of doors.” In this style, paintings are created entirely outside. Debra believes that her plein air work has helped her studio work. “You can capture light, color, and atmosphere in a way you cannot when painting from photos. Everything can be beautiful if the light is just right! My plein air experience helps me translate photos so my paintings feel fresher and more alive.” Omaha Performing Arts commissioned one of Debra’s most well-known paintings. A large portrait of benefactors Richard and Mary Holland hangs in the Holland Performing Arts Center. “The piece was unveiled at the Center during Richard Holland’s 90th birthday celebration,” Debra recalls. “They 24

wanted a legacy Debra Joy Groesser, Owner/Artist piece that showed the Hollands’ love for each other and for the arts.” Debra does a lot of commissioned work, including portraits, landscapes, seascapes, architecture, animals, and memorial portraits. “I listen to what a client likes and wants so I can match their vision.” She enjoys connecting with clients on an emotional level. “It is rewarding to render my subjects so that people feel what I felt when I painted it.” A commissioned painting could be a wonderful option for someone looking for a gift that will become a family heirloom. Some of Debra’s most meaningful pieces are posthumous portraits. “Sometimes I feel them when I am painting,” she shares. “I can almost hear them whispering in my ear.” She recently completed a portrait of Cynthia Sturgeon, the founder of Project Pink’d. The organization serves breast cancer patients and survivors in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa. Ms. Sturgeon lost her battle with breast cancer and passed away last year. If you’re hiring an artist for a commissioned piece, Debra recommends checking out their work to ensure their style suits your taste. “Meet with the artist, get to know their story. It’s important to connect with the artist and like their style,” she emphasizes. She also advises asking questions about the process and the timeframe. Debra is thrilled when people love her art. “It’s such an honor that people purchase my work and hang it in their home, and it’s really cool when people say my work takes their breath away.” Debra Joy Groesser Fine Art Gallery is located at 5615 South 77th Street, in Ralston, and is planning a holiday open house Friday, November 3rd, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, November 4th, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday, November 5th, noon to 4 p.m. The gallery is regularly open Thursday and Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., by appointment, or “by chance,” if Debra is in the studio painting. You can call the gallery at 402-592-6552 or find them online at debrajoygroesserfineart.com or debrajoygroesser.com.

Good Looks
Custom Jewelry Express Yourself!
By Loretta McCollum
When we shop for jewelry, we want something special that speaks directly to the heart, not a cookie-cutter piece that looks like everyone else’s. A custom creation solves this problem by putting you in the driver’s seat. When you build a house, you want to be involved in every aspect of the process. You want to make sure that the floors, windows, and paint colors suit your taste. Why would it be different with your jewelry? Creating your own jewelry is an exciting process, but you may not know where to start. A professional jeweler has the knowledge and training to guide you every step of the way. Registered jewelers and certified gemologists are experts on diamonds, gemstones, and precious metals. Many local jewelry stores employ these trained professionals who can guide you through the design process. Most offer a complimentary initial consultation. The jeweler will work with you in doing a rough sketch to show you how they will make your design come to life. A CAD (computer-aided design) rendering will provide a 3-D image of the sketch. Once the sketch has been approved, a wax or resin model is created. This is the last step before the final piece is produced, so if there’s something you want to change, now is the time. After the model has been approved, the metal version is crafted and the stones are set. A few weeks later, you will be presented with the custom piece of your dreams! It’s helpful to become familiar with the different types of
metals and gems that you can incorporate into your design. Gemstones are divided into two categories: precious and semi-precious. Diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds are the most common precious stones. Precious gemstones retain their value over time and are extremely durable. They’re more costly but will stand the test of time. Diamonds are known for their stunning appearance. They are the hardest, most scratch-resistant of all the precious gems. Emeralds are the most popular of the green gemstones. They are believed to possess healing properties that help restore the body, mind, and spirit. Rubies are beautiful red stones. They’re often referred to as the “king of gemstones.”Their color varies from pinkish red to deep blood red. The sapphire is a highly-prized stone, particularly in shades of blue. Sapphires also come in other colors, including pink, yellow, green, and purple. Semi-precious stones are more affordable but are equally beautiful. They are softer than precious gemstones and more susceptible to scratching, but they are still durable. They’re

available in a vast range of colors. Popular choices are peridot, garnet, amethyst, topaz, and citrine, just to name a few. The correct choice of metal is crucial in your design. When deciding the type of metal to use, consider how it affects your budget, how the weight feels on your hand or around your neck, how much maintenance is required to keep it looking great, and any possible allergic reactions. The most common metals used in jewelry are gold, silver, platinum, and tungsten. Gold is a soft metal that never goes out of style. Silver is a classic choice for use in jewelry. It’s malleable and can be polished to a brilliant sheen. Frequent polishing preserves its appearance. Platinum is a precious metal with a naturally whitish-silver hue; it is a top choice for engagement rings. It’s durable and won’t change color or fade. It’s often combined with other metals due to its high cost. Tungsten can vary in appearance from steel gray to tinny-white. It’s incredibly durable and is naturally hypo-allergenic. Many other metal options are available, and your expert designer will help you select the best choice for your design. Repurposing existing jewelry to create a new heirloom piece is a meaningful way to honor family history while creating something unique that can be passed down for generations. It can be a simple redesign or a completely new creation. Jewelers use their expertise and creativity to craft a design that reflects their customer’s story and history. Large pieces are often broken up into smaller designs. Matching rings and necklaces make gorgeous gifts for family members. If you’re still searching for inspiration, consider some of the latest jewelry trends. The concept of “less is more” never disappoints, so minimalism is often a good choice. Thick cuff bracelets and thick neck chains make a bold statement. The ever-popular heart motif is a trend direct from recent runway shows. Statement drop earrings in any shape lend an elegant touch. Whether you’re creating a completely new heirloom or giving an existing piece new life, the possibilities are limited only by your imagination. Happy designing! Custom Furniture
Bring Your Vision to Life
By Robyn V. Powell
In many ways, the pandemic has changed the way we live. A reconsideration of priorities and a new appreciation for living authentically have led to a growing desire among homeowners for environments that express individuality. Tired of cookie-cutter, mass-produced furnishings, homeowners are seeking a more sustainable personalized style and quality pieces that are built to last. Whether you’re furnishing your very first home or redecorating your existing one, opting for custom, handmade furniture over mass production can take your home to the next level. Unlike ready-made furniture, custom-built furniture is tailored to meet your specific needs. From conception to completion, you have complete control over the design, material, and color of your furniture. For many people, the thought of custom furniture can be daunting. How do you figure out what you really want? Here is where the services of an interior designer are an excellent investment. Designers are experts at transforming your input into design ideas. Through collaboration with a designer, you arrive at a one-of-a-kind creation that is totally you. Once your design leaves the drawing board, it will be in the hands of a master craftsperson who will attend to every detail. Hand-built, custom furniture is a slow and steady process that employs the techniques of fine craftsmanship. The result is an out-of-this-world quality product. Opting for custom furniture doesn’t have to mean breaking the bank, either. Your designer will work with the custom
builder to ensure you remain within your budget. While you will pay more for custom pieces than for off-the-floor furniture, investing in custom pieces is worth it! The payoff is knowing you are getting exactly what you envisioned, with all the features you want, and that your furniture is crafted with the quality to last a lifetime or even longer. When it comes to custom furniture, the sky is the limit, whether it’s a one-of-a-kind live edge dining table to seat extended family during the holidays or a custom game table designed for your gaming group, you are only limited by your imagination. Wood type and finish color can alter the look of a piece and define its character. A light oak table will create an entirely different mood in a room than the same table in walnut. The possibilities are yours to explore! With so many people entertaining at home, a beautiful and well-designed entertainment center can make this room the most sought after destination in your home. These wall beds are seamlessly built into a wall and cleverly hidden behind shelving or doors to free up floor space. When needed, simply pull down a fully functioning bed and provide a comfortable sleeping place for overnight guests. We all love the idea of customization at home, but when it comes to upholstered pieces, people often wonder WE Did You Know.indd 1 whether it’s worth it. Upholstery is much more than just fabric covering. It also includes cushions, trim, and finishes. With custom upholstery, you have a say in the design of a truly beautiful creation in the color and style you want. You can also select the right fabrics for your lifestyle. Families with young children and pets can choose sturdy, high-performance fabrics designed to hold up to daily wear and tear. Signs of an Eating Disorder Recognition Can Save a Life
By Leslie Byrne
A healthy lifestyle requires a healthy attitude toward food and eating. An eating disorder can negatively affect both physical and mental health. Eating disorders can result in heart problems, digestive issues, bone and dental health problems, and even death. The good news is that treatments can lead to a healthy relationship with food. That is why it is important to know the signs of an eating disorder, as well as what treatment options are now available to overcome one. A few years ago, a friend of mine died after struggling with an eating disorder that I did not see. She was one of the estimated 30 million Americans who have faced an eating disorder. Although we may associate eating disorders with young women, about one in three cases are in men. It is believed that these numbers are also under-reported because men often present with a focus on getting more muscular, not necessarily on getting thin. The onset of an eating disorder is most often during young adulthood, but an eating disorder can develop at any age. There are several types of eating disorders. Knowing the differences between them will help you recognize one in others or yourself. A binge eating disorder is when someone regularly eats large amounts of food in a short amount of time without any control, and then is distressed about their eating. People with this disorder are often overweight or obese. Bulimia nervosa
includes a component of binge eating, but those episodes are followed by purging the food from the body through vomiting, using laxatives or diuretics, fasting, or excessive exercise. A person with anorexia nervosa intentionally and significantly reduces their food intake, leading to an extremely low body weight, far below the normal weight for someone of their age, sex, and build. People with bulimia and anorexia are both characterized by a fear of gaining weight. They are unhappy with their body size and shape and desperately want to lose weight, no matter how much weight they have already lost. They often see themselves as overweight, even when they are malnourished or starved. The exact cause of eating disorders is unknown. Some genes bring an increased risk of developing an eating disorder as well as changes in brain chemicals. Many people with eating disorders have other psychological issues such as low self-esteem, need for perfection, or impulsive behavior.

Laughter For a Lifetime
Are You Having Any Fun? Maybe It’s Time
By Janet Van deWalle
“Over-seriousness is a warning sign for mediocrity and bureaucratic thinking. People who are seriously committed to mastery and high performance are secure enough to lighten up.” —Michael J. Gelb
So, has seriousness taken over all of us? Has our feeling tone become one of responsibility, intensity, and earnestness? Whatever happened to gaiety, lightness, joy, and fun? “Mix a little foolishness with your serious plans: it’s lovely to be silly at the right moment.” —Horace (Roman Poet)
If this guy from Rome got it, what’s happened to the rest of us in the twenty-first century? I don’t know what it is about “maturing,” but all of a sudden, before we know what has happened, we’re married, we have house payments, and, more often than not, we have children who fill up that house. We go from carefree kids, adolescents, and young adults to mature, responsible, tax-paying citizens. Is this a good thing? Not if we’re grim. “A man’s maturity: that is to have rediscovered the seriousness he possessed as a child at play.” —Friedrich Nietzsche
When we are born, we know that our “job” going forth is to

seek our joy…to follow our bliss. You can tell that by simply observing a baby or toddler. They are so excited by life! The question that most often comes out of my mouth is, “So, are you having any fun?” If you consistently answer “no” to this question, then you know you’re on the road to dullness! “Dullness is the coming of age of seriousness.” —Oscar Wilde
Dullness and seriousness is a feeling tone that many of us have assumed is the adult way to behave. We have followed the perceived rule that we are supposed to be serious as we go through our lives. We find ourselves in the middle of our lives, having followed all the rules—only to arrive at a point of total, complete dullness. “If you obey all of the rules, you miss all of the fun.” —Katherine Hepburn
So, maybe it’s time to break those rules—those beliefs—that we have superimposed upon our lives. Maybe it’s time to have some fun! “The average person living to age 70 has 613,620 hours of life. This is too long a period not to have fun.” —Author Unknown

The American Diabetes Epidemic Don’t Be a Statistic!
By Linda Barnes
More than 37 million people in the United States have diabetes. Of those, 8 million are likely undiagnosed. Another 96 million Americans have pre-diabetes, which means that their blood sugar (glucose) levels are above normal but not quite high enough for an official diagnosis of diabetes. In other words—they’re well on their way to fighting the disease if they don’t change course. Nearly everyone has a family member or friend dealing with diabetes. My maternal grandmother had it, as did my older brother. Since there are likely genetic components, those of us who have blood relatives with diabetes must be vigilant. What exactly is diabetes? According to the CDC, it is a chronic condition that affects how one’s body turns food into energy. We all need insulin (made naturally by the pancreas) to facilitate getting the sugar from food into our cells, where it can be used for energy. If there is not enough insulin produced or if our cells do not respond to insulin normally, the result is too much sugar in our blood. Some of the common problems caused by uncontrolled diabetes are well-known: heart, kidney, and eye issues. Stroke, circulatory problems, and neuropathy are complications, as well. Less familiar complications like skin and mouth issues, hearing impairment, and even symptoms of depression may be attributable to diabetes. The three categories of diabetes are type 1, type 2, and

gestational diabetes. Type 1 often begins during childhood or adolescence. In these cases, little or no natural insulin is produced by the body. Type 1 accounts for about five to 10 percent of total cases of diabetes. Type 2 is by far more common and usually occurs in adults. However, it is happening more frequently now in children, teens, and young adults. This type of diabetes develops over time in a person whose body used to do a good job of regulating blood sugar but has stopped doing so. A third category, gestational diabetes, occurs during pregnancy and is often reversed after childbirth. What can we do to prevent, reverse, or treat diabetes? In the case of type 1, no prevention is known. Daily insulin is needed every day to survive. Thankfully, great strides have been made in the delivery of insulin since my grandmother’s day. A pen, syringe, and pump are common delivery options. For some, a pancreas or islet cell transplant may be a possibility. For those at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, or those

Treatment strategies may include dietary changes, monitoring of blood sugar, an exercise program, and medication. A number of oral medications are available, and the best treatment depends on the particular patient. Some medications focus on lowering insulin resistance. Others may help lower blood sugar by reducing glucose production in the liver. This is achieved by increasing a person’s own insulin production or by sending extra glucose out of the body through urine. A combination of lifestyle changes, oral medications, and insulin (if needed) are typically used to treat type 2 diabetes. For some, lifestyle changes, diet, and losing weight may be enough to reverse high blood sugar levels. Making such modifications can be challenging, but the payoff is worth the effort for those who are able to sustain them. Carrying too much weight appears over and over as a risk factor for pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Eating healthy and being active seem to be the keys to avoiding many of our 21st-century ills. Small changes can bring big rewards! Sources for this article included: diabetes.org, cdc.gov, and niddk.nih.gov. Goodwill Your Clothes - third.indd 1

Dog Obedience Training
Let the Pros Show You the Way
By Jackie Byers
Your dog can be your faithful companion and a source of joy for years, but that doesn’t happen automatically! You need to meet your responsibility in the relationship by training your dog. Dogs that are well-trained are confident, are mentally stimulated, and behave in ways that their owners (and the rest of us) appreciate. Everyone loves good manners! A well-trained dog is less likely to attack or be attacked by another dog and is less inclined toward dangerous behaviors like running into the street…no matter how much that squirrel beckons! Let’s get this out of the way first: You can teach an old dog new tricks. Dogs are always learning! This is also true for dogs of different breeds. Some breeds, like retrievers and German shepherds, are known for being easy to train; this is why they are often trained as service animals or police dogs. That doesn’t mean that dogs of other breeds can’t be trained! Training might look different for dogs of different ages and breeds, but every dog can learn better behavior. You may consider training your dog by yourself, and you may well have some success with that. You should also consider that dog training is just like any kind of training, which means you’ll have the most and fastest success if you let a professional lead the way. Professional dog trainers have worked with many, many animals. They will be able to assess your dog’s previous training, if any, and figure out where to start. They will demonstrate best practices, including positive reinforcement, and show you how to practice commands with your dog at home. Dog training is available as classes or individual training. As you can imagine, classes are generally the less expensive option. Dog training classes can be found through various places: pet stores, veterinary practices, humane societies, boarding facilities, animal rescues, and more. The class format is great for basic obedience training or refresher courses. For more specialized training, consider private instruction—just you, your dog, and the instructor. Many professionals have websites listing their techniques, references, and rates. This is great for dogs with specific behavioral issues or if you’re looking to train your dog as a therapy animal that can provide comfort to hospital patients, children in crisis, or others in need. There is currently no national certification for professional dog trainers, but the Association of Professional Dog Trainers has excellent standards and has members nationwide. To find a trainer near you, visit their website at apdt.com and click Locate a Trainer to search by zip code. The local Humane Society and your dog’s veterinarian are also great resources to find high-quality dog training in your area. You can also 42

ask friends and neighbors with well-behaved dogs where they learned their tricks! No matter what kind of training you choose for your dog, experts recommend that training sessions should be kept short, especially for young dogs. While in a training program, be sure that you and your dog have as much bonding time outside of training as possible. Play time and walks on leash are healthy for both you and your dog and are essential to building a positive relationship. One thing to remember about dog training is that no amount of obedience training will result in a bark-less dog. The “no” command will likely be useful for controlling excessive barking, but the truth is that dogs are going to bark. A barking dog is not misbehaving…it is communicating. Make sure that your dog is getting enough daily exercise and attention, and it will be less likely to carry on for what seems to you like no reason. One dog owner I know loves that her dog barks for deliveries. “I can get to my packages before the porch pirates do!” she points out. This behavior is automatic for many dogs—they’re just letting you know that someone is approaching. Of course, my friend’s dog is barking from inside at deliveries outside, not hassling the delivery person in the yard. As I said, everyone appreciates good manners! A last note to keep in mind about dog training: Experts agree that positive reinforcement is not just the best way to train a dog…it’s really the only way. Bad behavior needs redirection, but training is achieved through the positive reinforcements of praise, petting, and treats. With the help of a training professional, you and your dog can learn how to communicate better and enjoy each other’s company for years to come! What’s in a Name?
To Get What You Want, Know What You Have
By George Morgan
“What’s in a name?” Juliet muses in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”Her point was that a name is just a label that often fails to give an adequate description of the person or thing to which it refers. In her case, the problem was that Romeo was a Montague, a name that made him off limits to her as a matter of life and death. Even in lower-stakes situations, however, an inadequate name can cause a lot of confusion.
Sixty-three percent of all American adults own mutual funds. As a result, mutual fund has become a household term, and most investors have a rudimentary understanding of a mutual fund. The total value of the mutual funds owned by American investors is over $24 trillion—that’s trillion, with a T. Half of that money is actually in index funds. Millions of investors own index funds and don’t even know it. This is because brokers and Certified Financial Planners include index funds in their managed accounts with symbols that fail to adequately describe the fund type. Index funds come in two different formats, each with different name. The first format is the traditional mutual fund construction. A mutual fund is an investment vehicle manufactured and operated by a for-profit investment company. The fund company gathers assets from a variety of investors, which are then collectively invested by a portfolio manager. This type of fund can be managed following two distinctly different approaches. The first is the one most familiar to the public. Under this format, the fund manager buys and sells stocks with the goal of enhancing performance and, possibly, beating the market. The second format is the index fund format. An index fund is a mutual fund designed to mimic a specific stock market index. The fund includes every stock in the index, in the proportion that they are held in the index. It is a passive investment, which means no effort is made to trade within the fund in order to improve performance. Mutual funds are for-profit businesses, and the costs of paying managers’ salaries and bonuses are passed on to its shareholders. The trading costs associated with active management are also passed on to the shareholders. The more active the fund, the greater the trading costs. An index fund, on the other hand, is not traded. Therefore, its management and trading costs are minimal. Like the costs of a mutual fund, the savings of an index fund are passed on to the shareholders. The pricing of a traditional fund is done 15 minutes after the close of the market. All of the shares in the fund are priced, and the total value of the fund is then divided by the number of shares outstanding. The result is called the fund’s Net Asset Value (referred to in Wall Street jargon as the NAV). This type of index fund is bought and sold after the market is closed and is priced at the fund’s NAV. It is best suited for conservative investors who are comfortable with holding a
fund for long periods of time and are not rattled by shortterm market fluctuations. The second form of index fund is an exchange traded fund (ETF). ETFs are constructed in exactly the same fashion as the above-mentioned traditional mutual fund. However, rather than being bought and sold at NAV after the close of the market, they are bought and sold throughout the day on the major exchanges. The pricing is a function of the supply and demand for the shares of the mutual fund, just as in the case of an individual stock. ETFs are best suited to non-passive index investors. These investors tend to have accounts at the major discount/internet brokerage firms and can trade without paying a commission. Also, a high percentage of the assets in this category are held in tax-advantaged accounts like rollover IRAs or 401(k)s. Thus, their trades have no tax ramifications. When index funds were first made available to the investing public, Wall Street professionals saw them as a threat to their livelihood and began yelling, “Who wants to settle for average?” This begs the question: What is average? The short answer is: the market. And how do you measure the market? With a market index. By definition, an index fund will never beat the market because it mirrors the market. Historically, however, index funds usually beat their actively managed cousins. Investing is not a one-size-fits-all proposition, but success depends on knowing what you want and knowing what you have. Before choosing an investment vehicle, identify your investment skills and temperament. This will help you make the best selection from the ever-growing investment menu. The Green Thumb
Flower Bulbs
Powerhouses of the Plant World
By Linda Sutherland
Flower bulbs are a real game changer for gardeners! Flower bulbs are neatly bundled packages that are programmed to grow and bloom year after year, all on their own. What could be more perfect? Even better, they can be planted almost anywhere—window boxes, gardens, borders, around trees, in containers. Some can even be forced to bloom indoors! It is almost like they have a built-in battery that charges over the winter months, allowing them to erupt into flowers in the spring like magic! What I like most about bulbs is that they are really foolproof. In my experience, hardly anything ever goes wrong with them. If you plant them too shallow, too deep, or even upside down, they will find a way to bloom. If that isn’t a powerhouse of wonder, I don’t know what is. The perennial nature of bulbs make them extremely cost-efficient. You make the investment one time, and then you get to enjoy them year after year. When you’re shopping for bulbs, you should always choose the biggest, healthiest-looking bulbs that you can find. With a little care, they will spread and give you even more flowers every year. And their versatility is legendary. You can use them to fill in gaps in your garden, and they look fantastic in borders. In early spring, after a long and cold winter, there is nothing more hopeful than seeing those first daffodils and
hyacinths bursting out of the ground with their beautiful splashes of color. Bulbs actually divide and spread on their own. This means that the space around them may become a little congested, which reduces flowering. When an established group of bulbs starts producing fewer blooms, it’s likely that they need a little more room. You can remedy this by carefully digging up the bulbs after flowering has completely finished. Take care not to damage the bulb or pull off the foliage. Once you have done this, you are looking for a small offset growing on the side of the bulb. Just detach the offset from the main bulb. You can then replant the offset bulbs, as well as your original bulb, giving them plenty of space to grow and thrive. A good rule of thumb is to plant a bulb two to three times as deep as the bulb is tall.

When the plants begin to die back every year, do not remove the wilting plant leaves. The above-ground foliage is sending nutrients back into the bulb for the next year’s blooming. You can hide the look of wilting foliage with complementary plants that grow and bloom later in the spring. Bulbs are popular for their spring displays, but there are bulbs that flower all season long. Spring-blooming bulbs should be planted six to eight weeks before the soil begins to freeze in the fall. These bulbs, such as tulips, daffodils, and crocuses, can be left in the ground all winter long. I live in Zone 5, so I plant bulbs in October. I always plant lots of bulbs in the late fall for spring blooming. Summer bulbs such as calla lilies, begonias, and dahlias will not survive cold winters and must be dug up in the fall and kept in a dry place. Full disclosure: I often plant summer bloomers in the early spring, but I never dig them up in October and store them for the next year. I have a very laissez-faire attitude about that, and I choose to let them take their own course. To my surprise, I have had dahlias come back for three years now that should never have come back after the first year. So that part is totally up to you. You can dig them up and store them or you can leave them to their own devices without interfering. Another thing I love about flower bulbs is planting them in containers. The best bulbs for containers are crocuses, daffodils, tulips, irises, hyacinths, and snowdrops. Make sure the potting soil is thoroughly soaked when you plant your bulbs, and do not allow it to dry out totally because it can be somewhat difficult to rewet them properly. On the other hand, never let them stand in a pool of water or they could rot. I can’t help but love bulbs! They are cost-efficient, low-maintenance, and bring so much return on such a small investment! They are a breath of fresh air all season long. I encourage you to try some this year. Even if you’ve never tried planting bulbs before, it’s hard to go wrong! Sources for this article included: designscapescolorado.com, gardeners.com and brecks.com.

Will the Real Pilgrims Please Stand Up? What to Wear to Dinner
By Sharon Knierim
In all of the years I’ve celebrated Thanksgiving, nobody has ever come to our holiday table dressed in Thanksgiving garb. What is Thanksgiving garb? I doubt if too much thought would be required to determine what those first Thanksgiving celebrants wore. After all, didn’t we all grow up learning what pilgrims wore? Of course, it wasn’t just the pilgrims who came to that long-ago first Thanksgiving feast. Native Americans both contributed to and attended that special day, so there are several costume choices to be had when considering what to wear on this most special of American holidays.
Pictures and portrayals abound of the men and women of the earliest colony in their homespun trousers and skirts and shirts and blouses. Remember, every garment was handmade. Even the thread had to be made on a spinning wheel. Shoes were often made by hand, as were outer-garments. The native Americans, on the other hand, are often pictured in hides or animal skins. These clothes were also fashioned by
hand, just like their pilgrim counterparts’ clothing. Not that I’m opposed to home sewing, but the hide way of dressing does have a certain appeal. If it weren’t for all that scraping and conditioning, it might be the way to go. If we think about other holiday observances, appropriately festive wear is easily identified and organized. At Christmastime, both men and women seem eager to show off holiday sweaters

Elaine Jabenis...
A Legacy of Kindness
“Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you.”— Shannon Adler
This past weekend, I had the honor of attending Elaine Jabenis’s 103rd birthday celebration. If you’ve lived in Omaha for any length of time, my best guess is that you have heard of Elaine. She is Omaha’s local celebrity. Clear back in 1986, I had the good fortune of moving into our new home, which was right next door to the home where Elaine lived with her husband, Mace. I knew about Elaine when we moved in. She was a radio and television personality and writer of live productions. She worked with Johnny Carson on WOW and they became lifelong friends. During that time, she also had her own show called Saturday Scrapbook. Elaine was a fashion director at Brandeis. Elaine is recognized as being the grande dame of the Omaha Community Playhouse. She has awards too numerous to list. All of this is quite impressive, but it is just a very small part of what she has given us. The amazing thing about Elaine … what I feel is the most important part of her legacy…is what a kind, generous, and loving person she is. No matter what happens in life, be good to people. Being good to people is a wonderful legacy to leave behind. —Taylor Swift

By Janet Van deWalle I moved away from her neighborhood in 1997, but we have maintained our friendship to this day. She was kind enough to invite me to her milestone birthday bashes. I invited her to my all-girl pool parties. It always amazed me how many of my friends already knew Elaine. They had worked with her. Modeled for her. Attended her plays. And EVERYONE loved her. She would be the center of attention, as everyone wanted to catch up, reminisce, and just have the joy of being in her sphere. Now, that’s a legacy…. “That is your legacy on this Earth when you leave this Earth: how many hearts you touched.” —Patti Davis
Attending Elaine’s birthday bash made me reflect on the whole concept of leaving a legacy. What people in my lifetime have left a legacy that changed my life? That brings a warm spot to my heart? That made me a better person? That taught me a different way of being? I can count on one hand the number of people who have left me that kind of a legacy…two of them are my parents. Now, I guess it’s my turn. I am learning to be kinder, more loving, and simply better every day. My husband, Manny, helps me every day…and I help him. Elaine is a very hard act to follow. But I’m going to work at it every single day. Thank you, Elaine.

Time of Gathering and Sharing Creating a Legacy for the Kids
With the arrival of fall, we enter a time often spent gathering with family. It’s a nostalgic time of planning, sharing, and reminiscing; a time of linking, learning lessons, and creating a legacy. Most of my immediate family lives within a few miles of each other; the others span the country. Because of distance and busy lives, we don’t gather often as a tribe. Full-family gatherings are reserved for special occasions: major birthdays, weddings, funerals, or graduations. I think family time should be a time of sharing. When I’m sorting through boxes of papers, photos, and other memorabilia from our parents, as well as stuff we’ve saved over the past 60 years, I set aside stuff to share with the kids the next time we’re together. (I hope eventually to combine everything into a family history. Wish me luck.) The kids have said they’d like to see pictures of their grandparents and hear about their lives. Although they got to spend time over the years with my mom and their paternal grandparents, they never knew my dad, who died before I got married. Among the treasures I’ve found are letters, applications, and inquiries Dad wrote when applying for a job after leaving the Navy. I have the acceptance reply the railroad sent, stating they would hire him on a “part-time” basis…he was there for over 20
By Marge Shoemaker
years. Mom kept their letters from WWII, and I found memorabilia from Dad’s stint in the Navy. There were similar items of memorabilia from my in-laws. These are things that define the grandparents’ legacy to their grandchildren: stories and details about their lives; lessons they learned; links to their past. Try spending some of the time at family gatherings getting to know your parents (and with the kids getting to know their grandparents). Mom visited her family often as we were growing up. She and her siblings would go through old photos, sharing stories and recalling memories. Sometimes Grandma even shared some of her “treasures” and memories. In later years, I hung around with the adults, listening to their stories. Those times come back to me now when I go through the same albums. It’s a slow, but pleasant, process. Make the most of the time your family spends together. Share memories with your kids; encourage them to share their recollections with you. Photos from the past can spur shared memories. Remember, each person in the family may have different recollections, even of the same events. That’s why family gatherings are important. I often wondered why Mom and her siblings told different stories about the same occurrences. Mom explained there was a 20-year span between the oldest and youngest sibling. It makes sense. We are individuals, in different circumstances and ages. We are all people…the kids, too.

Avoiding Slippery Situations Get Your Vehicle Ready for Winter!
By Linda Sutherland
Another winter is fast approaching, and with that comes driving headaches. You can avoid most of them if you take the time for some pre-planning and get trusted auto care advice from people in the know. Let’s start with the safety and quality of your tires. Even if you’ve had your tires rotated every time your oil was changed, to help maintain even wear and tear, tires don’t last forever. It’s important to have your tires inspected before the winter comes roaring in to make sure you will be driving safely. According to AAA, you should have at least 1/8 of an inch of tread left to be on the safe side. Less tread than that can negatively affect your traction and ability to stay on the road. If you anticipate doing a lot of driving in winter conditions, you may want to consider purchasing snow tires—they have treads designed to get good traction on ice and snow. Next, let’s look at fluids. Many car problems will be intensified by winter weather, so it’s critically important that your vehicle is not low on the fluids it needs! Especially important during the winter months is anti-freeze. This keeps everything running smoothly! I like to always get an oil change before winter gets going. It goes without saying that you should have a full reservoir of washer fluid, as well. Have you ever hard a hard time seeing through your windshield during a snowstorm because the wipers were worn out? I have, and it is not a safe place to be. Make sure that your windshield wipers are new and in good working order and that you have no cracks or dings in your windshield that could impair your vision. Car batteries are a vehicle’s best friend…until that one freezing morning when the car won’t start. Have your battery checked by your mechanic to make sure it’s in good shape to get you through the winter. If it isn’t, take the plunge and purchase a new one. You can thank me later, every time your car starts in the bitter cold. What about cables? These vital parts need to be supple to work properly, and frigid weather is just the ticket for cold, brittle rubber. When a cable is already getting worn out, it’s easy for the freezing cold to lead to a snap. When you have that car of yours in the shop for winterizing, make sure that they are checking all the cables, as well. All the things I’ve mentioned so far need to be addressed to ensure optimal driving conditions during harsh winter weather. Now for a tip that’s a little more cosmetic in nature: Treat your clean car to a good coat of wax before winter sets in. This protective layer can go a long way in keeping your car’s finish safe from the harsh elements of winter roads, like sleet or salt. Now for a few things to keep inside the car. Your emergency kit should really be in the car at all times, but there are a few essential items that are specific to winter. Ice and snow scrapers are vital. I never carry just one! I have a long-handled one, 52
November 2023
a short-handled one, and one that can handle that hard sheet of ice that clings to the windows during an ice storm. I have seen some ice scrapers recently that come with a built-in glove attached. Now, that is progress! Speaking of specialty products, how about one of those nifty folding snow shovels? You have to have a shovel, for getting out of tight situations, and a folding shovel takes up much less room. Always include a flashlight with brand-new batteries in it. You also should have matches and/or a lighter, some protein bars, a few bottles of water, a blanket, snow boots (if you are not already wearing them), a good little tool kit, and the ever-popular phone charger. The last thing your emergency vehicle kit should have is jumper cables. I have these in my car, but I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I don’t really know how to use them. I am going to remedy this with my mechanic very soon! I strongly suggest that you follow my lead and have someone in the know show you exactly how to use your jumper cables, if you don’t already know how. It can’t be that hard! Be safe on the roads this winter! Take your time, pay attention, and drive defensively. Set yourself up for success by making an appointment to have your car winterized before the cold weather arrives! Phases of the Moon Moon Glow Influence!
By Janette Calabro
Songs have been sung, books have been written, and romantic movies have blossomed before our very eyes on the big screen because of it. What is it? Why, the moon, of course. What is it about the moon that makes us swoon?
For centuries before humans landed on this great white orb, scientists, philosophers, astronomers, and stargazers have feasted their eyes on this globe in the sky, contemplating theories, facts, and fiction. The moon conjures up countless visual arts, performing arts, poetry, and magic. There’s also another side to the whimsical moon—no, not the dark side…the scientific side! Let’s look at both. We all know the moon orbits the earth, but did you know that the distance from the earth to the moon is about 239,000 miles? Because the moon spins on its axis in the same amount of time (exactly) that it takes to orbit the earth, earthlings only ever see one side of the moon. The moon is visible in eight phases from the earth. The phases, in order, are new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent. The moon cycle repeats about every 29 days. This year boasted four super moons. These full moons seem larger than usual because they appear during perigee— that is, the time during its orbit that the moon is closest to the earth. We also had 13 full moons this year, not the usual 12. Every two and a half years, give or take, we get a 13th full moon (known as a “blue moon,” though it is not blue in color). According to National Geographic, the moon was formed about 4.5 billion years ago. It was made of debris from an explosive collision between early-stage earth and another heavenly body. Because the moon has no protective atmosphere, the surface temperatures are extreme, boiling in the sun’s light and colder than the North Pole at night. Fun fact: Moon dust smells a lot like gunpowder. What about the moon’s effects on seafarers? We’ve all heard that the moon’s gravitational forces cause tidal bulges, or high ocean tides, on the side of the earth that is closest to the moon, but did you know that a lunar eclipse saved Christopher Columbus? Space.com notes that Columbus had a copy of the almanac with him while stranded in Jamaica. “He soon discovered from studying its tables that on the evening of Thursday, Feb. 29, 1504, a total lunar eclipse would occur, beginning around the time of moonrise.” Columbus used the moon to frighten the local people into providing his crew food and provisions. Saved by the moon! Native American people used colorful names to describe each full moon, tracking every passing year and season. The names stuck, though dates change every year. In 2023, January 6 debuted a Wolf Moon and February 5 revealed a Snow
Moon. March 7 conjured up a Worm Moon, while April boasted a Pink Moon. On May 5, a Flower Moon bloomed, followed by a Strawberry Moon on June 5. The 3rd of July turned out a Super Buck Moon this year, and August 1 brought a Super Sturgeon Moon. On August 31, you may have enjoyed the Super Blue Moon. As harvest season begins, September’s Super Harvest Moon glows from the sky. October is a Hunter’s Moon. November was the time of year when traps were set to ensure fur supplies for the winter before the swamps froze over; it brings the Beaver Moon. December will produce a Cold Moon—a good time to bring out the blankets! The bright light of our moon has shined down on us for billions of years, creating a counterweight for earth. Planets without a moon can wobble, creating extreme weather such as more frequent ice ages. The moon won’t vanish anytime soon, but if it did, ocean tides would cease, the earth would be more prone to asteroids, earthquakes and volcanoes may worsen, and the earth might spin faster, resulting in shorter days. NASA plans to send humans to the moon in 2024, and private companies are also forming future lunar missions. The moon has impacted most of human society and culture for centuries. Close your eyes and imagine Shakespeare’s gently lit balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet. The romantic scene may not have fared as well without the moon’s light and magic. Tonight, remember to enjoy the moon’s glow (a direct influence of the sun). As writer and clergyman Norman Vincent Peale said, “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” Sources for this article included: space.com, nationalgeograpic. com, and nasa.gov. November 2023

Pedodontics, PC
Welcoming Dr. Emily Strunk
By Deborah Daley
Emily Strunk, D.D.S., is thrilled about her position as the newest pediatric dentist at Pedodontics, PC. She recently finished her dental residency in Dallas, Texas, and came home to Omaha in late July. She had worked at the clinic as a dental assistant during her training and is excited to begin her career at the dental practice where her mother works. Pedodontics, PC is known in the Omaha area for being a positive place to start your child’s experience with the dentist.“This practice has the right approach to children’s dentistry,”Emily says,“and it’s a special privilege to be working with other dentists and my mother.” A 2019 graduate of the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry, Emily brings a unique set of skills along with her dental prowess to the practice. She chose to specialize in pedodontics (that is, dentistry for children) because it marries two of her passions: dentistry and kids’ entertainment. Emily didn’t always imagine that she was going to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a dentist. “Growing up, I really thought I was going to be a balloon artist,” Emily recalls. While she was doing her special-
ized pedodontics training in Emily Strunk, D.D.S. Dallas, she also leaned in to her passion for children’s entertainment, doing balloons and magic on the weekends. Eventually, she became a card-carrying member of Clowning around DFW (a Dallas entertainment agency) and the Omaha Balloon Brigade. That’s right—she’s a trained balloon artist. “I love seeing children’s faces light up,” she says. “I hope to bring those elements of joy to my work in Omaha.” “I think it is important to create moments of fun for

kids at the dentist,” Emily continues. “We want these young people to have a good relationship with their teeth so they take care of them.” Emily joins a female-led practice which provides both pediatric dental care and orthodontic care. In addition to Emily’s mother, Dr. Lisa Strunk, the practice includes pediatric dentists Dr. Carmen Dana and Dr. Rebecca Buss. They are supported by a large group of dental assistants and office staff. “My mom is an inspiration,” Emily shares. “She has been in the business for more than 30 years. While she was raising a family and practicing dentistry on Saturdays at this dental clinic, she went to school in St. Louis, commuting back and forth for two and a half years to earn her masters in orthodontics.” Dr. Lisa Strunk is the only dual-trained specialist in Omaha who can provide orthodontics and pediatric dentistry services to her patients at the same time. Pedodontics, PC prides itself on using the most advanced treatment technology and on providing a range of treatment options, ensuring that each patient receives a personalized treatment plan. The clinic’s philosophy is that every staff member participates in creating healthy smiles that last a lifetime. To accomplish this goal, they work hard to make patients feel right at home in the office. Services offered at the practice include pediatric dentistry, early orthodontic treatment, and comprehensive orthodontics, including invisible, metal, and ceramic braces. One of the things Emily enjoys most about her work is
changing kids’ minds about fearing the dentist. Sometimes, she notes, a youngster comes in who is anxious and maybe a little fearful of dental work. “I love to see the transformation when I can set them at ease, have some fun, accomplish our dental work, and they enjoy the experience,” Emily says. Families are quick to praise the work of the whole team at Pedodontics, PC. “I can hardly put into words how much I appreciate, and highly recommend, everyone at Pedodontics,” says parent Erin Casey. “One of my children has extreme anxiety about dental visits. Without exception, every dentist and dental assistant we’ve seen has been genuinely patient, kind, and compassionate, and has built trust with him over time. Dr. Lisa Strunk is a wonderful person—caring, curious, and respectful of the kids’ unique needs. Thank you!” Shannon Board Strain also shares her appreciation of the care her family receives at Pedodontics, PC. “The office has a friendly and knowledgeable staff and great facilities. Dr. Dana is the best!” Pedodontics, PC is located at 2521 South 119th Street, in Omaha. They’re open for appointments Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Tuesdays and Fridays, they open one hour earlier for patients who need before-school appointments. To learn more, find them online at pedodonticspc.com. To ask questions or schedule a visit, call the office at 402-330-5913. Peak Performance
Sleep Disorders
A Serious Health Concern
By Deborah Daley
The right amount of high-quality sleep is as important for good health as diet and exercise. Sleep improves your brain performance, mood, and health. Not getting enough regular sleep raises the risk of many diseases and disorders, from heart disease and stroke to obesity and dementia. Unfortunately, about 50 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep disorders. Let’s take a look at these disorders, their diagnoses and causes, and their treatment options. According to recent National Institutes for Health (NIH) studies, about one third of adults report insomnia symptoms and six to 10 percent meet the criteria for insomnia disorder. How much sleep we need varies depending on age and varies from person to person. According to the National Sleep Foundation, most adults need about seven to nine hours of restful sleep each night. Sleep disorders involve problems with the quality, timing, and amount of sleep, all of which can result in daytime distress and impairment in functioning. Sleep disorders often occur along with medical or mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, or cognitive disorders. There are several different types of sleep disorders, of which insomnia is the most common. Others include obstructive and central sleep apnea, parasomnias, narcolepsy, and restless legs syndrome. Insomnia affects millions worldwide. Characteristics of insomnia include difficulty falling or staying asleep, waking up too early, or feeling unrefreshed upon waking. Many factors, including stress, anxiety, depression, medications, caffeine, and alcohol, can cause insomnia. With sleep apnea, a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep, leading to many brief awakenings throughout the night that can sound like snoring, gasping, choking sounds. Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by a physical obstruction in the airway, and central sleep apnea is caused by a failure of the brain to signal the muscles to breathe. Parasomnias are a group of sleep disorders involving abnormal behaviors or experiences during sleep. Some common examples include sleepwalking, sleep talking, night terrors, and nightmares. Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder that causes excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden sleep attacks. It can also cause sleep paralysis, in which a person is temporarily unable to move or speak and experiences vivid hallucinations upon falling asleep or waking up. Restless legs syndrome is a neurological disorder that causes uncomfortable sensations in the legs, like itching, burning, or crawling, that can only be relieved by movement. It often occurs in the evening or at night, leading to difficulty falling or staying asleep. A comprehensive medical assessment for sleep disorders may involve a patient history, a physical examination, a sleep diary (written record of your sleeping habits), and clinical testing (such as a sleep study). A sleep study allows 56
November 2023
the physician to identify how long and how well you’re sleeping and to detect specific sleep problems. Diagnosis of a sleep disorder and choice of treatment depends on the frequency and severity of symptoms. Treatment for a sleep disorder varies, but the common factors include a combination of sleep medications and behavioral techniques, such as cognitive behavior therapy. Most of the medications can be habit-forming, so a physician’s oversight is critical. Over-the-counter sleep medicines contain antihistamines, which are commonly used to treat allergies. They are not usually effective and can cause other issues. Other techniques to address sleep problems can be used in conjunction with medical treatment. Many people turn to complementary health approaches like relaxation techniques, massage, and yoga. Lifestyle changes to support good sleep hygiene can include adding fish and vegetables to the diet, reducing sugar intake, reducing stress and anxiety levels, sticking to a regular sleep schedule, drinking less water before bedtime, limiting caffeine intake, and more. Ask your health professional for guidance to help you find what works best for you. Treatment for sleep apnea involves the use of appliances or even surgery, depending on the severity of the disorder. Physicians consider continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) the gold standard treatment for moderate or severe sleep apnea. A CPAP machine plugs into an outlet and sits next to the sleeper’s bed. A tube connects the machine to a mask that covers the sleeper’s mouth, nose, or both. The machine blows air into the sleeper’s airway, which helps keep it open during sleep. Nasal devices are another alternative for treating mild-to-moderate cases of sleep apnea. They work by gently opening up nasal passages so that air can flow more freely. Custom-fit dental appliances may also be in order to keep airways open. Sleep disorders are treatable but take time to resolve. They may never be cured, but a consistent treatment plan and regular communication with your doctor can put you on a path to better sleep. Cleaning Carpets and Rugs
Get Your Flooring Deep-Cleaned This Fall!
By Anne Yankus
Before winter sets in and you have to battle the never-ending tide of wet boot prints all over your carpets and rugs, you may want to consider getting in a deep-clean of all your home’s flooring. Fall is actually the best time to have your carpets professionally cleaned, as it’s no longer hot and humid. The cool, dry weather is ideal for opening up your windows to let the fresh air quickly dry your carpet. It’s also a great time to get your carpet fortified with stain-resistant and water-repellant protectors before holiday guests arrive. There are also health benefits to getting your carpets professionally cleaned. Deep cleaning will help eliminate any pollutants, such as pet dander, smoke, or pollen, trapped in the carpet fibers. It will prevent mold growth and remove the dirt, dust, and bacteria that regular vacuuming misses. Of course, weekly or bi-weekly vacuuming is a must, but how often does your carpet need to be professionally cleaned? Experts recommend having a pro come in for deep cleaning at least every 12–18 months. For higher trafficked areas of your home, or homes with a lot of pets, you should bump up that timing to every six to 12 months. There are a few different methods of professional carpet cleaning to choose from. The most common method is hot water extraction cleaning. This method pumps pressurized water and cleaning solution onto your carpet, then removes the used cleaner and liquid using a powerful vacuum. It’s

similar to how rentable or DIY carpet steamers work, but on a much more powerful and effective scale. Hot water extraction is most effective on stubborn stains and ingrained dirt and has the added benefit of leaving no cleaner or chemical residue behind. The only downside is that you cannot walk on your carpet while it dries. Another popular deep clean method is dry carpet cleaning. Dry carpet cleaning applies a special powder to your carpet and agitates the fibers to loosen and absorb dirt. The powder soaks up ingrained dirt, which is then vacuumed back out of the carpet after 15 minutes or so. Dry carpet cleaning is best for types of carpet that are prone to fiber damage or carpets that need to be walked on again quickly without waiting for them to dry. Carpet steaming and carpet shampooing are often confused with hot water extraction; clients who ask for

Robots for the Home Enjoy More Free Time
By Angella Arndt
Do you spend a lot of time at home performing chores? How would you like more free time? Robotics for the home are popular and can reduce your time doing work around the house. These self-propelled appliances include vacuums, pool cleaners, grill cleaners, lawnmowers, and window cleaners. Some of the more monotonous cleaning tasks include vacuuming and mopping. Robotic vacuums can clean tile, wood flooring, and carpeting, and some models are compact enough to clean under tables and couches without moving furniture. Vacuums vary in size and options. Consider your home’s size, layout, and floor type—you’ll want a larger battery capacity if you have a big area to clean. What type of flooring is in most of your home? Some models are designed for hard floors and will not work well on carpet. Hybrid models contain a vacuum and mop to clean carpet and hardwood flooring. Robotic vacuums generally have a docking station with a battery charger. Some models will return to the docking station to recharge before resuming where they left off to finish cleaning. Raised doorways, stairs, and irregular corners can impact a vacuum’s efficiency. Many models have laser navigation sensors, so you can designate areas to clean or not clean. Some models have cameras and AI technology to identify and bypass things like toys, shoes, and pet waste. They also serve as a mobile home security camera, so you can view a live feed while away. Other factors to consider are suction power, filter, debris disposal, scheduling capability, and Wi-Fi. If you have pets, you need a model with enough suction power to pick up pet hair. A self-emptying feature means that debris empties from the unit’s bin into a bag, reducing dust exposure— great for allergy sufferers. Some units skip bags altogether and dispense the waste into a compartment in the docking station, which you can empty when the bin is full. Vacuums that connect to Wi-Fi allow you to program a cleaning schedule and control the unit from a phone or with virtual assistant technology. If you have a swimming pool, you may spend what feels like too much time keeping it clean. Robotic pool cleaners can remove dirt, leaves, bugs, and other debris on the walls and floor of your pool, so you do not need to vacuum. When selecting a pool cleaner, purchase one appropriate for the size and type (above-ground or in-ground) of your pool and correct for the pool’s construction material. Some models have Bluetooth or Wi-Fi radio. Bluetooth allows local control, and a Wi-Fi radio connects to your home’s network so that you can control the unit through a mobile app. Look for a cleaner with an app that allows you to start the unit, set a cleaning schedule, and switch cleaning modes. 62

If you love to barbecue but dread cleaning the grill every time, consider a grill-cleaning robot. This circular unit contains a rechargeable battery and dishwasher-safe removable brushes. The unit cleans the grill’s grate surface but cannot clean around and underneath the grates, making it an attractive option for those who grill regularly and want a quick surface cleaning. Caring for a lawn is time-consuming. If you prefer not to hire a lawn care service, a robotic lawn mower can reduce the time you spend on yard work. Models are available for small or large yards and have rechargeable battery packs. Robotic lawnmowers use a perimeter wire or satellite-positioning technology to keep them on your lawn. Programming is handled with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or an onboard control panel to create zones, configure edge-cutting settings, schedule run times, and perform diagnostics. When selecting a robotic lawn mower, purchase one appropriate for the size of your lawn. Other features to consider are multiple zone programming, a weather-sensing feature, a dedicated remote control, spare cutting blades, and an alarm to protect against theft. Windows allow sunlight into our homes and allow us to enjoy looking outdoors, but dust, rain, and snow prevent windows from remaining spotless. A robotic window cleaner may be the solution to keep windows clean without all the work. These units attach to glass with suction or magnets. All units have microfiber pads to clean without leaving streaks. Consider the size, shape, and weight of your windows and the robotic unit before purchasing. Higher quality machines tend to have more speed and suction power, automated sprayers, and AI technology for better cleaning. Robotics for the home provide options for people who want to spend less time performing specific monotonous chores. Less time working means more time with your family and friends and enjoying life. Now, that sounds like a win-win. Sources for this article include: bhg.com, cleanupexpert.com, pcmag.com, and usatoday.com.

Positive Perspective
Save Your Life!
They’re Stealing More Than Joy
The other night, my husband and I were talking about owning our feelings and emotions. We both know that it is under our control as to whether we choose to be negative or positive. When one of us recognizes that the other is going down a negative path, we bring it to the other’s attention. “Don’t let them steal your joy!” has been our catchphrase. Then our conversation became deeper. We realized that when we allow other people to steal our joy, we are actually letting them steal our lives. “Stop giving other people the power to control your happiness, your mind, and your life. If you don’t take control of yourself and your own life, someone else is bound to try.” —Roy T. Bennett
Why do we do this? Why do we allow other people’s needs and wants to take precedence over our own joy? Now, we’re not talking about babies and children here…we are talking about adults. Friends, family, coworkers, and so on. How many hours, days, months, and years of our lives have we all spent analyzing the injustices? The cruelty? Let’s just STOP! We are not capable of changing others. We certainly can influence them…if they are open to healthy communication. We need to learn how to protect our joy and our happiness and our lives.

“You cannot control the behavior of others, but you can always choose how you respond to it.” —Roy T. Bennett
This was really an “aha” moment. Stealing our lives? Wait a minute…our lives? That realization certainly raised the bar for us. I don’t know about you, but our goal, for the years that remain in our lives, is to be as happy and joyful as we possibly can be. Manny and I say that the second part of our lives is going to be the best part of our lives. No longer are we going to waste our lives trying to figure out other people. No longer are we going to wonder what they think about us or why they did something that was rude, inconsiderate, or even just plain despicable. Our lives are too precious to us, and we no longer have to prove anything to anyone. “It’s none of my business what other people think of me.” —Abraham/Hicks
As disturbing as this realization was, we certainly did learn and grow from it. Do we stumble sometimes and find ourselves reverting back to our old patterns? Of course. We are learning a new way of being. The great news is that Manny and I are on the same page and we catch each other before it gets out of hand. Our new catchphrase is, “Don’t let them steal your life!”
