2 September 2022 Publisher’s Notes

Hello, all! September…wow! Everyone is talking about how crazy fast this year has gone. I concur! Summer just whizzed by. In fact, it went so fast that I forgot to wish my husband a happy third anniversary in last month’s August issue. Wait…I get a mulligan! Our September issue actually is dis tributed on August 23rd. Our anniversary is August 25th. Happy anniversa ry, Manny…I love you. Whew…that was close! August 25th is also the 10-year anniversary of when Manny and I met. We got married seven years—to the day—after meeting one another. It doesn’t seem possible that we have known each other so long. As I’m writ ing this, I’m shaking my head about the experiences we’ve had together. It’s been quite the ride! I’ve changed. He’s changed. Life, as the world has known it, has changed. I am so appreciative that Manny is in my life. I can’t imagine going through this last decade without him. I don’t think it gets any better in life than to have a husband who is your best friend. He is there for me and I am there for him. We both learn every single day…on our own and together. We talk more than any other couple that I know. When Manny and I got married, he said that the last half of our lives will be the best part of our lives. He was so right. We have time to love, learn, and grow together. We are Myblessed.daughter, Carissa, and her husband, Ken, have very busy lives right now, with their kids, sports, work, household responsibilities. I remember that younger stage of life. Crazy! So much going on. So many responsi bilities. Time to talk as a couple? I remember feeling like if I had a spare moment I would sleep. However, Carissa and Ken have made a different decision! They have always made their relationship a priority and make it a point to talk and have time for one another. Hope you all had time for a little relaxation this summer. It was a hot one! Soon, the nights will be cooler and we can enjoy the outdoors again. Before I sign off, I want to wish my three broth ers…Tom, Steve, and Greg…a happy birthday. Tom and Greg share a birthday on September 16. Steve was premature and came on September 3rd. I love my brothers. I am fortunate because they all live here in Omaha. They are all good men!

Crumble 6 pieces of crispy bacon into an unbaked pie crust. Add 8 ounces of grated Monterey Jack or pepper Jack cheese and one 4-ounce can of drained chilies. Mix together 4 eggs and 1 and 1/2 cups of cream or Half and Half. Stir in a few pieces of diced onion. Pour the mixture into the pie crust. Bake at 350 degrees for 30–40 minutes.

“Use Any Fruit” Galette Mix 1 and 1/4 cup of flour with 1 Tablespoon of sugar and a pinch of salt. Dice 1 stick of butter and work it into the flour mixture until crumbly. Add 3–4 Tablespoons of cold water until the dough comes together. Form into a disk, wrap, and refriger ate for 30 minutes. Assemble your choice of summer fruits—you will need 4 cups of sliced fruit. Sprinkle the fruit with 1/2 cup of sugar and a dash of salt; mix well. Roll the dough out into a 12-inch circle. Put the fruit in the middle and dot with 2 Tablespoons of cubed butter. Fold the crust toward the middle (this isn’t a pie; the fruit will be exposed in the center). Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet and sprinkle with additional sugar. Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. Lower the oven temperature to 375 degrees and continue baking for 45–60 minutes, checking on it often toward the end of the time. Let cool.

Veg Kabobs Chunk cut whatever fresh vegetables you have—zucchini, squash, Brussels sprouts, cherry tomatoes, potatoes, anything. Melt half a stick of butter and add 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and a sprinkle of garlic powder. Baste the veggies and slide them onto skewers for the grill. Cook on the grill over medium heat until done. You can also pile the veggies into a foil packet and grill until tender or sauté them in a skillet.

What is your favorite fashion decade? Chances are, most of us have great memories of a special decade when the fashions of the day really spoke to us. This fall, design ers have decided to give a big nod to the ’80s and ’90s, and I am very much on board! The fashions of the 1980s, as you may recall, were filled with glamour and glitz. I am ex cited about this trend, as I could never seem to get enough of those looks back then! Conversely, the minimalism of 1990s fashion has also returned as an important fashion statement. There is something for all of us for fall!

Your Favorite Looks Are Back!

The nostalgia trends will continue to influence with slouchy, oversized blazers. Blame it on Billie Eilish or on a general yearning that has continued beyond the pandemic for comfortable clothing, but baggy is in! Must-haves for this season are high-waisted jeans and a bigger blazer. You’ll get a lot of wear out of both of these pieces!

Nostalgia Rules for Fall

You must also make room in your ward robe for a few bohemian pieces. You know, those fun, homespun, crafty-looking pieces that you find at flea markets, craft shows, and funky boutiques. The colors are earthy,

Jackets always play an important part in our fall wardrobe, and we will see the return of the classic moto or biker jacket, along with the classic bomber jacket. They will be popular in leather or faux leather. Searching for vintage versions can be a fun shopping experience, and the rewards are unique. Don’t forget your feet! Birkenstock-inspired mania has gripped all of us this summer and will continue into fall. You’ll also see foot-friendly, stompy, lug-soled boots—a perfect match for those moto jackets! If this season brings only one viral fash ion item, it’s going to be the vest. Vests are on every fashionista’s wish list! Worn simply alone in the warmer months, vests are perfect for layering as the weather cools. Sweater vests for men, women, teens, and kids will be the rage. For back to school, trendy kids will want several. Youth-driven pop culture is the dominant force for autumn’s looks. That doesn’t mean fashion is only for the young— the nostalgia trend is bringing us youthful fashions from many decades!

Fall will also extend the summer trend of vibrant colors, with bold looks making a splash on fall runways. Valentino red, royal blue, and emer ald green will keep the positive energy vibe going throughout the cooler months. Designers are calling this “dopamine dressing” because the bright hues boost our moods.

They are treasures to keep forever and experiment with every season. Animal prints are still going strong. They can be worn and styled in so many ways and look so good on everyone that many stylists now consider the basic animal print as a neutral. This year, it’s all about leopard. This print can be worn boho-style when paired with more ca sual items or can be styled to look posh when paired with black.

As we approach the holiday par ty season, fashion gets exciting with elevated and glamorous looks. It’s fun to dress up for parties, but sparkles aren’t just for holiday wear! Let some sequins or shiny embellishments sneak into your day-to-day wardrobe for a bit of fun. Add some twinkle in your outfit with a crystal-embellished handbag or chandelier earrings. For evening this fall, sequins and sparkle are a dominant theme. All-over sequined dresses are on trend. Remember, they don’t need any accessorizing—they shine on their own. While we may sometimes like to be bright and bold, everyone can appreciate the sophistication of head-to-toe black. There is nothing more glamorous and flattering than a black outfit! You always feel put-together in black. Designers have experimented with all-black outfits this season, mixing fabrics and textures along with layering different lengths. Go grab all the black in your closet and try it on in various combinations with an eye to layering and mixing. Another fun idea is to take a bold color like Barbie pink and wear it with all black. This was one of the themes of Valentino’s fall collection. Add some bright lipstick for a glamorous contrast. As we say goodbye to summer, it’s fun to work in some new layers, tex tures, and shine, bringing a fresh look to our wardrobe. Fashionistas always welcome new ways to wear existing favorites. All you need is a little cre ativity and few new pieces for a perfect transitional wardrobe.

Finns have removable insoles, allowing you to put in your own custom insoles, if needed. That way, you can have great arch support and a stylish shoe. Promoting Happy, Healthy Feet

Alan and Dorothy are passionate about helping their customers find the right shoes for their individual needs. The Tuflys opened their shoe store 30 years ago and have been at their present location at 16909 Lakeside Hills Plaza for 15 years. Alan and Dorothy have a com bined 60 years of experience in the business. While I was in the store, looking at the different styles of shoes, a young woman came in with a special request—she had small, wide feet. She was a special ed ucation teacher, and she knew that she needed comfort able shoes with good support. Dorothy asked her key questions about her needs, her style, and what types of shoes she had liked in the past. After listening carefully to her customer and zeroing in on what she needed and desired, Dorothy suggested several shoes. Ask yourself if this is the type of treatment you might get at a big box, self-serve shoe store.

Fitness experts urge us to take 10,000 steps a day to stay fit and healthy. That’s about 3,650,000 steps a year—no small task, es pecially if your feet hurt. Remember the saying“my dogs are barking”?

16 September 2022 A Woman’s Work

With the advent of COVID-19, our entire society changed. The way we lived, worked, and interacted altered. For many, it created a new paradigm, both negative and positive. It has forever etched a pro found mark on our history and society. Hopefully, we are on the other side. Outcomes of Pandemic Life

Positive

For a few moments, I want to focus on some of the positive effects that the pandemic had on us. Of course, we felt many adverse consequences of this phenomenon. In my case, some of these challenges offered me an opportunity to do some things I may never have done without the pandemic. I hope my reflections give you pause to consider the things you did during this time. One of the most profound outcomes of the pandemic was the embrace of technology. Though we had valued technology before, the pandemic led us to a digital existence that chal lenged even the savviest among us. We lived, worked, and inter acted electronically. Zoom became our new meeting, event, and celebration platform. I witnessed educators being even more creative and engaging to garner student attention online. Phone calls and text messages increased profoundly. I found I made even more of an effort to communicate because I was isolated at home. Now that I can see friends, I still use technology to have conversations if I can’t visit them or they live far away. During the pandemic, I believe that many people, like me, became more introspective. You looked at your life, prayed, con templated your world, and took time to think about important things. I had time to evaluate things that are important to me. I literally smelled the roses by walking outside and looking at my neighborhood rather than rushing to the next activity. I appreciated my family more. I know many families found time to eat, play, and talk together now that they were not rushing to activities after school and work. Health consciousness was at the forefront of our minds. We took our temperatures, read about COVID symptoms, got test ed, were sensitive to colds and headaches, got vaccinated, and wore masks. We got in touch with our bodies and took care of ourselves. At the same time, we realized that the lockdown was affecting our mental health. As a single person, I wrote, cleaned, renovated, and did whatever I could to stay positive and not go By Deborah Daley

Finally, the pandemic gave me time to learn new skills and hone existing ones, tackling tasks I had put off because I was too busy. I started my novel and took online seminars on interesting topics. I outlined my will and funeral arrangements and tried new recipes I saw on YouTube. I became an expert online shopper, finding discounts and reduced fees on things I needed.Thepandemic has had many negative effects, but that doesn’t mean nothing positive can come out of it. I believe the experience has made us more resilient.

BodyWise Testomonialstir crazy. It was very challenging, but it also helped me understand my mental health radar. Larger households faced different challenges than I did, but we all understood that isolation, even for our own safety, was not risk-free. Many people adopted or bought pets during the pandemic. My dog, who is very special to me, became even more a part of my life. Many of my friends have shared that their furry friends gave them pur pose and unconditional love, which was important during challenging times. The pandemic also changed the way we dressed. Sweatpants became the norm. Family and friends joked about pairing blouses and suit jackets with sweatpants for Zoom calls because cameras only saw them from the waist up. Now that many people are back to work in offices, the professional-casual look, especially for women, is still acceptable. Being comfort able makes it easier to work and inter act. The power suits and designer dresses are a thing of the past, and I think that is a positive change. The lockdown gave many of us time to clean, organize, and even renovate. Home projects flourished, as we no longer had an excuse to avoid attics and garages that were untouched for years. Real assess ments as to whether something was being used or needed took place. I packed up more than 20 boxes of items to donate when donations became possible. I de cided to renovate my kitchen and began scoping out plans. I met with contractors with masks on or virtually. Of course, like everyone else, I had to wait until social dis tancing guidelines had eased before work could begin, but I booked a contractor six months ahead of time. The contractor and I formed a team. Together, we were able to purchase materials, appliances, and sup plies as partners by buying them virtually.

Jayne spent several years at the company before deciding to make a change. “As an agent for an insurance company, I was limited in what I could offer clients. As an indepen dent insurance agent, I represent several companies, which means I can offer clients insurance solutions that best meet their needs.” She started Klein Senior Insurance in 2017 and opened an office in August 2021. Administrative assistant Amanda Stinn provides customer service and is also licensed to sellKleininsurance.SeniorInsurance specializes in Medicare insurance solutions. Medicare Advantage Plans, Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, and Medicare Part D Prescription Plans are some of the available options. Other insurance products include Affordable Care Act, dental, hearing, short- and longterm health care plans, and annuities. Jayne serves clients across Nebraska and Iowa and is licensed in Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, Kansas, Missouri, and Colorado. Medicare insurance has become more complicated over the years. Premiums, deductibles, and coverage vary widely. Some plans require the use of doctors in their network and may not cover non-emergency, out-of-network care. When offered, prescription drug coverage is controlled by a for mulary, also known as a drug list, and drugs and costs are different between plans. Jayne emphasizes the importance of understanding how Medicare plans are structured and what is included.Customer service and education are important to Jayne.

Jayne Klein began her career as a teacher. While teaching middle school science, she had a serendipitous meeting with an insurance agent who asked her if she was interested in becoming an agent. She became an independent insurance agent before working for a nationally known insurance com pany. Tammy Steller, a trainer for the company, had a pro found influence on Jayne. “She was very knowledgeable, and her passion and excitement about the business showed when she talked,” Jayne recalls. “It was not just a business to her; it was the business of helping people.”

Are you 65 years of age or older (or do you know someone who is)? Are you confused by the different Medicare insurance plans? How do you know which option is right for you? With so many vari ables, it can be challenging to decide which plan will best meet your needs. If you are newly eligible for Medicare or are not sure you are on the right plan, Klein Senior Insurance would like an opportunity to clear up the confusion and find the right insurance solution for you.

“Clients deserve an agent who is honest, respectful, and trustworthy,” Jayne says. “I build relationships with my clients, so I am knowledgeable about their insurance needs.” Jayne believes that mutual trust is essential, and she is easily acces sible to her clients.

When Jayne first meets with a client, she learns about their needs and explains each Medicare plan available. She provides a needs analysis that includes medications and doctors so clients can choose a plan to best fit their healthcare needs. She also gives an estimated overall cost so clients know what to expect. “We treat everyone with respect and provide personal service without pressure. People can think about their options before deciding,” Jayne shares. Most importantly, she continues, “we do not leave our clients after the sale. I want what is best for them, and my clients know they can come to me when they need something.”

JayneOwnerKlein,

One of the biggest challenges facing Jayne’s clients is the high cost of insurance and drugs. “There are so many people who struggle to pay for their premiums and medications, and so many people don’t know where to turn,” she says. “I can help clients who qualify apply for extra financial help.”

Although people may enroll directly with a Medicare plan, working with an insurance agent provides many benefits. “We work with some top insurance carriers, so we offer compet itive rates and customized plans,” Jayne explains. “We are advocates for our clients. We provide personal service and help with claims and customer service issues.” Jayne performs annual reviews of medications and insurance plans to ensure that clients’ needs are still being met. She provides services at no cost to clients, as she receives her compensation from insurance carriers.

She has successfully helped several clients obtain financial assistance. “I have had clients reach out to thank me because the extra help allows them to get needed medications and have a little bit of financial freedom,” Jayne concludes. “It is so rewarding to be a resource they can count on.”

Less Pain, More Life By Janette Calabro

Pain is always troublesome, but chronic pain can be particularly frustrating. Chronic pain means pain that is present on most days of the week for at least three months. It interrupts daily life, interfering with sleep, social activity, a healthy sex life, and the ability to work and go about your daily activities. Such long-term pain is often caused by an illness or injury. In some frustrating cases of chronic pain, the sources can’t be found.

20 September 2022 Fresh Concept

According to Johns Hopkins University researchers, the leading cause of chronic pain is injury, “commonly from playing sports, car accidents, home accidents, and work acci dents.”

It may start as acute pain during an illness or after an injury but can persist even after you’ve recovered from your condition. You may have an illness like arthritis or cancer that is an ongoing source of pain, while some people suffer from chronic pain with no apparent source. Most importantly, “al most two thirds of people with chronic pain report that their pain interferes with their daily activities.”

A great pain management plan starts with a conversation with your primary care physician or local hospital. Standalone pain management clinics often incorporate everything you need under one roof for diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain, whether you need surgery or an alternative therapy. The CDC states that, “Multiple studies say folks who have com prehensive pain management have less pain and emotional distress. Research says they also can do their daily tasks easier.” Check to see what types of treatments are offered at a pain clinic, and stay away from those who only offer addictive narcotics. Commit to a pain clinic, doctor, or specialist who offers a comprehensive plan that is individualized for you. One of the many safety rules for managing pain is to never mix pain medication with alcohol, sleeping pills, or illicit drugs. Don’t drive or operate heavy machinery while on pain meds or opioids. Your doctor will educate you on the use of pain medication if needed—heed this advice! We’ve all heard the unfortunate news that opioid addiction has become an epidemic and a public health endangerment in the United States. Since 2000, more than a million people have died in this country from drug overdoses, mostly from opioids. Though opioids can provide effective pain relief, any pharma ceutical regimen should always be closely supervised by yourSkindoctor.patches such as the lidocaine transdermal patch are often used as a local anesthetic to block pain. These are available by prescription and have no addictive or narcotic properties. They work by blocking nerve endings in the skin where the patch is applied. Buprenorphine skin patches are prescribed for severe pain, mostly as a last resort because they are opiates and can be addictive. They work by changing how the brain and nervous system perceive pain. Have a serious talk with your physician before using this transdermal patch. Nerve blocks are often injections of medication that com pletely block pain from specific nerves. Non-surgical nerve blocks are similar to an epidural for women during childbirth and are used to treat both long-term and short-term pain. One example is to block pain from a specific area after a knee replacement. Another example is a total block of any feeling in preparation for surgery. In some cases, surgery is needed to target a specific damaged nerve and destroy it. Holistic treatment for pain can be an effective pain man agement solution, especially when combined with conven tional medicine. Low-impact physical activity like walking,

For most people who endure chronic pain, a personalized pain management plan can help bring relief and lead to a better quality of life.

Pain Management Plans

Experts say that about 36 million people in the United States missed work because of chronic pain in a one-year time frame and that lower back pain is the most common type of chronic pain. About 50 percent of adults in the United States endure chronic headaches. Smoking and obesity add to the problem. Chronic pain has financial costs, too, to the tune of 600 billion dollars a year. The good news is that help is out there. It is common to seek help from your trusted general practitioner first—your primary doctor can often provide referrals to other medical professionals. While they may be unable to eliminate chronic pain completely, medical pros can help manage your pain, bringing it to a tolerable level with as little risk as possible. Neurologists, orthopedists, oncologists, physical therapists, and occupational therapists are great resources when it comes to pain relief. Your practitioner may recommend analgesics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that you can buy over the counter, but most pain management specialists don’t recommend these for long-term use—side effects that are easy for the body to tolerate in the short term can become serious issues over time.

There’s also another side of chronic pain—depression and anxiety have a say in how pain feels physically. Psychologists, therapists, and other behavioral specialists play a big role in helping you feel better from head to toe. Alternative practi tioners such as chiropractors, acupuncturists, naturopaths, myofascial release professionals, and massage technicians are also popular to help relieve pain without the risks that come with pharmaceuticals. Many physicians with medical degrees combine Western medicine with alternative techniques for a good balance. Don’t forget about nutritionists, dieticians, and compassionate nurses who can help point you toward healing. Let’s look at some popular treatments and the type of professional who conducts them.

Another holistic treatment is the centuries-old practice of acupuncture. Along with improving blood circulation, acupuncture stimulates the nervous system for release of those feel-good endorphins. The practice works by plac ing thin, flexible needles at very specific body locations to stimulate healing. Don’t worry, the needles don’t hurt! Look for a licensed acupuncturist to ensure proper training and procedures. You can often find chiropractors and massage technicians who are also licensed in acupuncture, along with standalone practitioners and clinics. Chiropractors play a big role in short-term and long-term pain relief. They’re not there to just crack your back! Pain in the joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves can fre quently be relieved through multiple chiropractic techniques that actually feel good. Back and neck pain, headaches, sacroiliac pain, shoulder pain—you name it, your trusted chiropractor will address it.

“I believe that listening to the patient is one of the most critical parts of diagnosis and treatment.”

Myofascial release is a safe way to release tightness and pain throughout the body’s fascia. Everyone has fascia, a web of pliable connective tissue (similar to a ligament or tendon) that surrounds your muscles, bones, nerves, and blood vessels. Fascia is everywhere, and it’s usually relaxed and supple—when it’s healthy. After an injury or illness, as a result of poor posture, or as part of the aging process, fascia can become rigid, causing pain and lack of mobility. Your my ofascial professional has studied hands-on techniques to help restore fascia to a healthy, flexible state. We all love a relaxing massage, and a more therapeutic deep tissue massage is sometimes needed. Massages feel good and lower stress levels. Massage technicians can also target painful muscles and joints, move lymphatic fluids, increase circulation, and improve immune function. There’s a reason we call holistic practices the “healing arts.” Work them into your pain management plan and restore your mind, body, and soul!

yoga, or any source of movement that feels good helps relieve chronic pain and the depression that often goes along with it. A physical therapist can identify exercises that will improve your range of motion without exacerbating your pain.

Studies show that hypnosis and meditation or mindful ness have significant impact on chronic pain and the emo tional pain that may accompany physical pain. In some cases, curiously acknowledging a painful sensation without trying to resist it can decrease the level of pain.

Biofeedback is often recommended to help address chron ic pain. It’s a way to measure body functions, including heart rate, breathing, and brain waves, all from electrical sensors that are connected to specific areas of the body. When you can literally see how your body is responding to certain stimuli, you can alter your body’s response—for example, you could intentionally relax certain muscles to lower levels of pain or anxiety. Biofeedback can be done in a clinic or at home, used interactively with your computer or phone. Check out physical therapy clinics, medical centers, or your thera pist’s office for biofeedback therapy.

Stark Media

Stark Media was born out of a six-year stint as IT/desktop support for a large credit card processing company. I then stumbled onto an opportunity to make “videos” for that same company. I said yes. My role was to produce in-house corporate marketing videos. Having no real experience as a videographer, I had to adopt the “fake it ‘til you make it” mentality...and it worked. Fast forward three years. The excitement was missing, I was yearning for more meaningful projects. I became complacent and uninspired. Although it did put food on the table, I yearned to produce something with more impact and meaning. Then along came another opportunity to help produce a short film about Alzhei mers. That changed the game for me. This is what I was reaching for. Real stories, real people who inspire and provoke viewers. It was the most challenging endeavor I had done at the Understandingtime. how to tell a strong story in the least amount of time, and how to engage the viewer for the duration of the piece, is not easy. Our purpose is to make something powerful, moving, and memorable. Recently, we produced a “Memory” video for a retired couple. Their story was captivating and powerful.

“We do several types of tutoring,” says Frank. “We have one-on-one tutoring (teacher and student) for subject matter, if someone needs help with just math or reading.”

When kids struggle with schoolwork, it impacts the whole family. Huntington Learning Center franchise owner Frank Haverkamp wants to help. Huntington Learning Center is a tutoring and test prep service that helps kids in kindergarten through 12th grade achieve their academic goals. His team works closely with students, personalizing programs for each one, no matter the goal. Their success rate is high, often exceeding goals and expectations.

For kids who are behind a few grades, Frank says, the one-on-one tutoring works best. “The most we have is four students and one teacher in what we call the learning center—that’s fourth grade and above. For third grade and below, for actual class and testing, then you’re one-onone.”Interacting with kids over the years, he learned to recognize the reasons that kids lag in their studies. Even when a student presents with struggles in other subjects, he says, reading is often the culprit when kids fall behind. “If a kid is having trouble with math in seventh or eighth grade,” Frank explains, the issue may be low reading abili ty, not low math ability.

The Huntington Learning Center team walks parents through the program, explaining what to expect in terms of academic improvement, time frames, and payment plans. If a child doesn’t like to read and falls behind, they may not understand why. That’s where Huntington steps in. It’s all about confidence—and scholarships! Students have fun as they learn, and the payoff is a lifetime reward of knowledge, self-assurance, and choice.

It’s a positive program, Frank explains, and it’s meant to support both students and teachers. “If a child is falling behind because there’s an unrecognized failure somewhere, the school system may not have the time to invest in it. It’s not that the teacher is failing—it’s that there are 30 other students in that classroom. The guidance counselors are very happy with us because they know what we do.”

Computer programs, classes, and curricula are detailed at Huntington Learning Center, developed from academic tests and evaluation. Every child works at an education al module until they master it, sometimes reaching two grade levels ahead of where they started. “Most of the time, when kids think they can’t do it, it’s because some one told them they couldn’t,” says Frank. “It feels easier to not do it than to fail. At Huntington, we give these kids confidence in their own intelligence. They come in and learn how to work through the problem.”

Student Claire H. says, “I never thought it was pos sible for me to learn so well! I’m grateful for all of the help. Thank you for helping me to improve my learning abilities.” Katie E. says, “The teachers were patient, coop erative, and friendly. After going to Huntington, I gained confidence in myself, and I learned that hard work pays off!”Before Huntington Leaning Center, says student Peyton, he struggled with everything. Now, his grades are straight A’s. Ian K. says that the teachers are nice and that they helped his mind grow. “Overall, Huntington this summer has been amazing,” reports Bailey E. “I learned so much here that will help me later in life. It’s been one of the best summers I’ve ever had.”

Frank gets great satisfaction from helping people move toward and eventually achieve their academic goals. That’s his dream—to take away limitations and help children accomplish what they want to do in life. He wants kids to have the opportunity to make choices instead of life mak ing choices for them. Those choices form a confident child who may very well earn a full scholarship to college if they choose!

If your child has fallen behind in school, needs a test-prep boost, or just wants to have one of the best summers ever, reach out to Huntington Learning Center!

Huntington Learning Center also offers one-on-one tutoring for test preparation. The ACT test measures what a student already knows, most likely from high school. The SAT exam is more of a predictor of what a student can learn but may not have already learned in school. An immersion in a hydrotherapy tub helps detoxify and prepare your skin for treatment. A complete immersion in water that is infused with essential oils, detoxifying muds, or clays allows the pores to open and absorb the beneficial ingredients. Hydrotherapy reduces muscle tension and relieves pain. The weightlessness felt when in the water relieves tension in the limbs, supporting aching muscles and easing range of move ment as compared to when you’re on dry land. Hydrotherapy stimulates the release of endorphins, acting as a natural pain reliever, which will further reduce muscle soreness.

Many of us spend a great deal of time and money to have young-looking skin from the neck up, but what about the rest of the body? The skin is our largest organ, and we should give it the attention it de serves. Enter the full body treatment.

What is a full body treatment? It’s essentially a head-totoe facial. The idea is to cleanse, exfoliate, and hydrate the skin, leaving your body softer and smoother. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways and may include things like body polishes and scrubs, wraps, hydrotherapy, aromatherapy, and massage.

By Loretta McCollum

Hydrotherapy can be hot or cold, depending on the results you want. Cold water stimulates and invigorates, increasing the body’s internal activity, whereas warm water calms and soothes, slowing it down. Alternating hot and cold water treatments can help heal injuries, enhance certain bodily functions, and reduce inflammation.Hydrotherapy may be followed by a body scrub or polish. Salt scrubs, sugar scrubs, or scrubs containing coffee grounds or coconut shells are common. Body scrubs exfoliate and leave the skin glowing and refreshed, exfoliating dry skin, improv ing texture, and stimulating cell renewal. This also increases circulation and eliminates clogged pores, which helps the body absorb nutrients. Dry brushing is sometimes performed along with a scrub or polish. This involves rubbing a coarse, natural bristle brush over the body in a circular motion to help exfoliate dead skin cells and enhance the skin’s ability to eliminate toxins through the pores. Body wraps are extremely popular. There are many different types of wraps, each providing different primary benefits.

Microcurrent can be a component of a full body package or performed on its own. We usually think of it as being used on the face, but it’s for all areas of the body. It is a low level of electrical current that mirrors the body’s own natural current. A benefit that has made microcurrent so popular is that it can shrink fat cells, which helps eliminate cellulite. It aids in the anti-ag ing battle by diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improving the texture and appearance of the skin. A Vichy shower is a good final step in the process. Water cascades over the client from several showerheads or a “rain bar,” removing the products used during treat ment. The temperature of the water can also benefit the skin. A warm Vichy shower reinforces the immune system and relaxes the body. The therapist can perform an alternating hot and cold therapy shower that oxygenates, detoxifies, firms, and tones the skin.

THE Art OF SELLING YOUR HOME

When selecting window treatments, it’s important to look beyond style preferences and consider a room’s functionality. Begin by asking yourself what you need your window treat ments to do for you in a particular space. For example, do you need versatile light control options? A room that does dou ble duty as an office and a guest bedroom may require light filtering during the day and privacy at night. Layering simple panels with room darkening shades is a great solution. Perhaps you have large windows and a beautiful view you don’t want to obstruct, but you need to block UV rays from your interiors. Solar shades allow for transparency while reducing harmful rays. With proper planning, you can select from stylish options that address any competing needs. When it comes to style in interior design, experts say we’re seeing some major shifts. It’s all about livability these days, with styles that are simple and not fussy. A room can still exhibit luxury, but materials are durable, comfortable, and inviting. The same theme carries through to window treat ments. The heavy swags of the past have been replaced with sleek, streamlined styles made of natural fabrics and woodsy materials that evoke a more casual feeling. Bringing the outdoors in was a major trend during the last couple of years, and it continues to influence the design world. With the focus on soothing and calming our psyche, we look to nature for inspiration. Our windows are direct portals to nature and our source of natural light. Optimize the benefits of mood-enhancing light while eliminating glare and harmful UV rays with innovative window treatments such as sun shades that allow for transparency, UV protection, and comfort from glare. Modern research has shown that our connection to the colors around us can impact our mental and physical health in a significant way. When deciding on colors for window treatments, keep in mind that color can affect our emotions. Choose colors that bring feelings of peace and harmony into your home. Natural light works in a similar way. Light, airy spaces flooded with sunshine and windows dressed in soft

The perfect window treatments do more than just control outside light and privacy— they transform the look and feel of a room. Often considered just the finishing touch in a space, the impor tance of window treatments should not be overlooked. Through color, style, and light control, they play an essential role in the aesthetics and function of any space, whether you’re looking to relax, work, or entertain!

Many of us know the answer: because men often brush off the importance of preventative care. That means that making appointments for things like cancer screenings often falls on the shoulders of the women in their lives. Because this is a common situation, it’s important for women to learn about the prostate and what symptoms or changes should prompt us to get the men in our lives into the doctor’s office.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month Early Detection Saves Lives

Why are we talking about prostate cancer in a magazine focused on women’s interests?

Several tests can diagnose prostate cancer. The first is usually a physical rectal exam in the doctor’s office. Many men avoid this exam because it can be uncomfortable, but it is necessary. For men who are not exhibiting symptoms, a

Prostate cancer doesn’t have a specific cause, but it does have recognized risk factors. It is most common in men over age 50, and the average patient is older than 65. Black men have a greater risk than men of other races. A family history of prostate cancer can increase the likelihood of a prostate cancer diagnosis. As with breast cancer, there are certain genes that increase a person’s risk of developing the disease, and family members often share these genes. Another common risk factor is obesity. Men with an average risk of developing prostate cancer should start being screened by age 50. Men at higher risk should start screening by age 45. The symptoms that men should pay attention to regarding their prostate health are not exclusive to prostate cancer— these symptoms can be caused by other prostate-related is sues. That’s why it’s important to get a doctor’s opinion if you experience symptoms like a slow or weak urine flow, blood in the urine, burning upon urination, or sudden erectile

So, what is the prostate? It is a gland located below the bladder in men that helps make semen. It surrounds the area that drains urine from the bladder. The prostate often grows as men age, which is why regular screenings are important. If caught early, prostate cancer can be conquered!

If the PSA levels are high, further tests are ordered, including an MRI. Eventually, a prostate biopsy will likely be recommended. The biopsy proce dure involves a needle biopsy where core samples are viewed under a microscope. This is an outpatient procedure with a short recovery time. There is more than one type of prostate cancer. The cancer cells obtained during a biopsy tell doctors what type of prostate cancer is present. This, in turn, influences which treatment is started. If cancer is detected, treatment options for prostate cancer depend on whether the cancer is only in the prostate or has spread to other parts of the body. The patient’s age is also a consideration when recommending a treatment plan. For many men, doctors may recommend a “watchful waiting” approach. This means that treatment is de layed until the cancer grows and the PSA level increases. Prostate cancer is generally a slow-growing cancer. In some cases, it takes years before the numbers reach a level where treatment needs to start. Other treatment options include radiation therapy and hormone therapy. Radiation therapy uses radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Hormone therapy involves using drugs that stop the body from producing testosterone. Another common treatment for prostate cancer is to surgically remove the Whatprostate.can men do to promote a healthy prostate? They can exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight, find ways to reduce stress, and follow a heart-healthy, low-carbohydrate diet. Eating fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants, as well as eating more omega-3 fatty acids, is recommended. One of the best things a man over 50 can do to maintain prostate health is to know his PSA number. That means they see the doctor every year to find out if they’re still in the low-risk range. Early detection of this disease gives a man many options!

If there is a man older than 50 in your life, encourage him to see the doctor for a prostate cancer screening. If you need to schedule that appointment for him, go ahead and do it. It can be a life-saving decision!

Customers who have come to love the food at Le Voltaire need not fear too much change under new ownership. After all, Chef Wilson was the executive chef at Le Voltaire for years before he bought the business from the original owners, Cedric and Desarae Fichepain. Cedric still owns and oper ates the bakery adjacent to the restaurant. The menu remains mostly the same throughout the year but offers some special seasonal dishes. The favorite dish of customers is the beef bourguignon.

Chef Wilson is responsible for the entire establishment and operates the back of the house (that is, the kitchen). Nic, the general manager, oversees the front of house, including the dining floor and bar area. Altogether, there are 15 em ployees. “We are fortunate that, in an industry where there is a great deal of turnover, many of our front of the house staff have been with us for years,” he says.

years later, he was named executive chef. In August of 2021, Chef Wilson and Tonya bought Le Voltaire. Since then, Chef Wilson has continued to bring people together through food.

Chef Wilson believes that the secret of the restaurant’s success is that there is a family atmosphere in the midst of beautiful ambience and incredible food. People who come to Le Voltaire have what he describes as an “experience,” often making the meal into an event that can last two hours.

Sarah Haddad, who has visited the restaurant for years, echoes Chef Wilson’s comments about the family experience.

“It’s a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere and a great fine dining experience with fabulous food at Le Voltaire,” she says. “Chef Wilson often comes out and visits with guests to make sure the food is to their liking.”

Chef Wilson’s favorite dish to make is duck cassoulet. “Both dishes are hearty French classics.”

Bloom.indd 1 8/9/22 8:19 AM

Chef Wilson’s philosophy is threefold and has been a motto of his life. “I believe you have to be fully committed to your life’s work, you must make people happy, and you have to provide superb service,” he explains. “I hope I am a role model for my children on what hard work can achieve and that I am leaving them a legacy of excellence to follow. I hope that when the people in our community look at my work, they see that the American dream is accessible to anyone who works hard. Anything is possible here in America.”

“I have a passion for food,” he says. “I truly believe it is the way to a person’s heart and an expression of love.”

The restaurant seats 82 comfortably, and there is a back room for parties. “We have many wedding rehearsals, show ers, birthday parties, and other events,” says Chef Wilson. The restaurant has an extensive wine selection and is frequently recognized for its offerings. Le Voltaire hosts wine tastings periodically to showcase its wines. Chef Wilson encourag es diners to make reservations, especially for the weekend. During the week, you can also drop in.

Le Voltaire is open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday, for lunch on Friday, and for an extraordinary Sunday brunch. Learn more at levoltaireomaha.com or by calling 402-9339374. Le Voltaire is located at 569 North 155th Plaza.

Besides traditional French cuisine, Sarah says, there are often imaginative specials. “I love the Fish En Papillote, a fish wrapped in parchment with vegetables. It’s moist and flavorful. I am also very fond of the Haitian soup the Chef introduced recently.”

The Help You Need to Age in Place

40 September 2022 Healthy Living

The mission statement of Caring Senior Service clearly summarizes the philosophy of the owner and staff:“We believe that every senior should be able to remain healthy, happy, and at home.”As Bette Davis so eloquently articulated,“old age ain’t no place for sissies.”That surprising fact can really sneak up on you as you get older. Tasks you used to complete with ease now require struggle; every corner of your home can be an issue. Some seniors are relieved to downsize to a retirement community or assisted living facility where they can give up some of the responsibility of keeping a home. Others would prefer to stay at home but need some assistance to do so safely. This option is called“aging in place,”and it’s the specialty of the caregivers at Caring Senior Service.

The premise of aging in place is that with guidance, vi sion, and help from local resources, seniors can stay in their homes for a longer time these days. The ability to maintain a safe and independent lifestyle lets seniors live life on their terms, even if they need assistance. For 30 years, Caring Senior Service has provided the assistance that seniors require to maintain their independence.

Shirley Tingley, the agency director, has been in the healthcare industry since 1992. Home care is where her heart is. Shirley’s goal for her clients is to see them thrive at home—to give them the control and assistance needed to live safely at home, and to give their families peace of mind.

Today’s seniors are healthier and happier than ever, and they want to maintain as much of their independence as pos sible, for as long as possible. If this reminds you of yourself or a senior in your life, Caring Senior Service is ready to help you make it happen. Most of the clients at Caring Senior Service are seniors, but the agency also works with younger adults who need assistance during a challenging recovery from illness or injury. Shirley assures us that their services are available at any point in life.

“There are many areas in which caregiving can make a person’s life a bit easier,” Shirley says, “and family or friends may not be available to help. Think of areas like personal care, meal preparation, transportation, light cleaning or laundry, errands, respite care—anything the client needs that does not involve skilled nursing.” From dietary needs to monitoring the medications, from light laundry to bathing assistance to just a bit of conversation, Caring Senior Service can meet their clients’

Her fa vorite part of the job is getting to know clients on a personal level so she can design a plan to meet their needs and match them with the perfect caregiver. Caregivers are the backbone of the company. For the safety of both caregivers and clients, caregivers undergo numerous background checks and Caring Senior Service is licensed and bonded. Most importantly, they have true passion for serving others. Theresa ensures that each client has the best caregiver for them, based on skills, experience, and personality. Care managers also make regular visits to each client’s home to make sure that care plans remain up to date and that everyone is satisfied with the “Juneservice.and I have been in this business a long time,” Shir ley tells me. “We have been caregivers ourselves and know intimately what is needed to care for a loved one. We under stand from personal experience the challenges of caregiving and what caregivers must deliver.” At Caring Senior Service, Shirley continues, she and June don’t just practice what they preach—they live what they preach. “We have each seen the power of being able to stay home. We have had the honor of caring for a dying loved one and would not change that expe rience. Today’s economic environment presents us with a number of perplexing data points. At the end of the fourth quarter of 2022, the GDP numbers were negative, and early indications are that the second quarter will produce similar results. The job market, however, has showed surprising strength. The jobless rate went from 4 percent in December of 2021 to 3.6 percent in May 2022.

What’s In a Name?

It is important to recognize that recessions do not impact everybody in the same fashion. If you are just entering the workforce, a recession can make your job search or job retention difficult. If you are retired and on a fixed income, the traditional recessionary conditions are of little concern to you because prices and interest rates are stable. The current economic conditions, no matter what you call them, have thrown a monkey wrench in the works. Those entering the workforce are seeing multiple offers, many with a hiring bonus. Those on fixed incomes are being punished with a rising cost of living. In the midst of all this confusion, there are some green sprouts. Because of the pandemic shutdown, American households are holding larger amounts of cash than normal. The unprecedented rise in the inflation rate seems to have shaken the Fed from their Rip Van Win kle snooze, and they have taken an aggressive infla tion-fighting stance the likes of which we have not seen. Last, but not least, the pandemic-induced work-fromhome paradigm has caused employers big and small to rethink how to provide their labor force with the most productive working environment. What’s the takeaway from all of this? No matter what you want to call it, we are in a period of challenging economic conditions. Nevertheless, I think now is a good time to remember the often-spoken sentiment of the Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett: “Never bet against the great American economic engine.”

For a quick lesson in English literature, let me refresh your memory of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet:“What’s in a name?”asks Juliet.“That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet.”Juliet loved Romeo but was forbidden to see him because his last name was Montague (her family’s mortal enemies). If Romeo’s last name had been Smith or Jones, all would have been sweetness and light, she suggests, and they would have lived happily ever after.

42 September 2022 Focus on Finance

The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individ ual. To determine which investments may be appropriate for you, consult your financial advisor prior to investing. By George Morgan

Editor’s Note: George Morgan has five decades’ experience in all phases of the investment process. He is currently the Founder and Principal of Morgan Investor Education. His website is morganinvestoreducation.com.

The United States economy has been through 12 recessions since World War II. There are two conditions which helped define all 12 of them: A declining gross do mestic product (GDP) and a rising unemployment rate. While not part of the equation, it is generally believed that the convergence of these conditions would lead to a benign or falling rate of inflation.

To sort out this conundrum, I reached for the eco nomics textbook I used as a college freshman. When I opened it to the index, the word “recession” was nowhere to be found. What I did find was a full chapter on the business cycle. The author’s definition of the business cy cle boiled down to the fact that sometimes the economy is growing and sometime it is contracting. There was no mention of unemployment or inflation rates.

Politicians don’t want to take the blame for causing a recession because we are scant months from an election. The mantra for those in office is, “The economy is fine. Recession? No way!” If you are out of office, the battle cry is, “This is a recession, big time.” If you are a Wall Street guru? “I saw it coming, and you need me (and my big fees) to weather the storm.”

Wall Street and the politicians are in the midst of a similar“what’s in a name”game revolving around whether or not the economy is in a recession and, if it is, who is to blame?

Recession or Not, It Still Hurts

Although nobody is sure how it got to be this way, the unofficial arbiter of what is and is not a recession is the National Bureau of Economic Research. The NBER is a group of mainly academic economists who define a recession as two consecutive quarters during which the growth rate of the GDP is negative. This definition resulted in a quizzical situation during the subprime crisis of 2006 to 2009, during which the GDP would be negative one quarter, positive the next, and negative the third. People felt the economic pain and nobody got the Hereinblame. lies the rub. Because current conditions don’t follow the tidy conditions of previous recessions, everybody views this as license to provide the name that makes them look best in the eyes of the public.

Tip Number 3: Plan your budget. First-time expens es for bringing a dog home include a dog bed, a kennel, food and water dishes, toys, and a collar for dog tags. For walks, you’ll need a leash and poop bags. Your first trip to the pet store could cost a few hundred dollars. (Puppies may outgrow many of these initial purchases, so keep in mind that you may need larger sizes later.) Ongoing expenses will include food and treats, vaccinations and other medical treatment, annual licensing fees, and pet boarding.

Tip Number 6: Have a microchip installed. Micro chipping pets began in the 1980s. It is now a common practice around the world because it is a tamper-proof way to ensure that your lost pet can be found and re turned to you. The chip is installed (by the vet) between the dog’s shoulder blades in a relatively painless proce dure. Modern scanners can read the contact information on the chip no matter who manufactured it or when it was implanted.

Tip Number 2: Choose a vet. The veterinarian helps you keep your pet healthy and answers your questions about pet care. You can start looking around for a vet be fore you have a dog. Consider the vet’s location—it’s nice to have one close to home. You want a vet who commu nicates clearly, listens to your explanations, and can be easily reached in an emergency. Once you have your dog, pay attention to how the vet responds to your pet.

43September 2022 Cuddly Critters

Tip Number 5: Exercise with your pet. This is where knowledge of breed characteristics comes in very handy. Some dogs need to run daily; some just need a short walk. It’s important to choose an animal that will be a good match for you. Ordinary parks offer pleasant options when you want to change up your daily walks. Some dog parks, a feature of most cities, allow dogs to be off leash. If you are unsure how your dog will react to many other dogs at once, keep the leash on until you find out.

Getting a Dog is a Great Idea Tips for First-Time Dog Owners

Tip Number 4: Train your dog. The key to dog train ing is patience. Train your dog one command at a time, rewarding proper behavior. Dogs (especially puppies) will forget occasionally; be willing to repeat the steps. If you want help training your dog, options include classes at humane societies, animal shelters, or even pet stores; trainers who hold group classes outdoors or in training facilities; and private trainers who come to your home. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Tip Number 8: Find backup pet care. You’ll eventually need backup pet care for daily walking, waste cleanup, or vacation supervision. Ask your vet or neighbors with dogs who they recommend for home pet care or kennel boarding.

You may have been thinking about getting a dog for a while now, but it takes some important preparation to turn that great idea into a great reality. Here are some tips to guide you.

Tip Number 1: Consider the breed. Any dog can make a good pet, but not every dog is a good match for every family. Online (try akc.org) is a great place to learn about the typical characteristics of different breeds of dog. Breed characteristics include average adult size and life expectancy, typical amount of shedding, and common be havioral tendencies. You can also learn about the exercise needs of each breed, as well as how much and how loudly they’re likely to bark.

Tip Number 7: Obey the law. All states have laws governing required pet vaccinations. Some canine diseas es are dangerous—even fatal—for humans. Rescue dogs and shelter dogs will likely already have their initial shots; some breeders also provide them. Each municipality has its own laws about vaccinations, in addition to state law. Ask your vet for more information. If your area has leash laws, you need to have your dog on leash on walks. Even if you feel your dog is safe off leash, keep in mind that not every dog (or person) feels safe when approached by a dog they don’t know. Munic ipalities also have rules about dog waste that you need to follow. Even on your own property, you can’t let dog waste become a health hazard.

In bad weather, outdoor time may need to be brief, but your dog still needs exercise. Even short walks are beneficial and necessary. Indoors, you and your dog could climb stairs, play hide and seek with treats, or even do doga (that’s yoga with dogs—google it.) If you have the hallway space, you could set up an obstacle course or play indoor keep-away or fetch.

By Linda Sutherland Have you ever thought of planting a remembrance garden? I’m not talking about getting all maudlin or tearful about a garden; I’m talking about planting flowers and trees that have special meaning to you for many reasons. It could be a plot of bulbs you plant to remember one person or a larger garden to remember several people who have crossed paths with you or affected your life in some way. I recently realized that I have been consciously or unconsciously doing this for many years. My approach to gardening is to plant flowers that celebrate a life well lived. By planting a memorial garden, you can honor loved ones and provide a place of peace to remember them.

Another way to memorialize someone is with forget-menots (the name says it all.) If you want to celebrate the life of a friend, consider yellow tulips, which signify friendship. Car nations also have significance in people’s lives, and opinions on their meanings vary. In my estimation, pink carnations signify remembrance, red carnations stand for deep and abid ing love, and white carnations mean innocence and pure love.

Women’s Edition has been a great tool for our business. With their guidance on graphics and wording, we are getting calls and emails from great fitting customers, so the message is clear in regard to the problem we solve. We have been able to reach new customers on an individual basis. We are so happy to have formed this relationship. A Remembrance Garden Living Memorials

44 September 2022 The Green Thumb

It is a time-honored practice to plant a tree when a new baby arrives or as a tribute to someone who has died. If you think about it, plants are excellent reminders of the seasons of life and can be lasting tributes to your loved ones. You could plant a small garden and combine it with a bench or a stone to commemorate your loved one. The key is that what you plant meant something to the person you want to honor or somehow connects you to that person. Through the years, I have honored many people in this fashion. My beloved grandmother loved roses, so you can be sure that there are always roses in any garden that I create. My mother absolutely adored sunflowers, and I always plant those to honor her and her passion. An oak tree stands for strength, and that would certainly be an appropriate tree to plant for someone who represents strength to you. I particu larly like to honor strong women who have been in my life, so that is always an option for me.

Many plants and colors have significant meanings. For example, you may want to honor a veteran, an armed forces member, or someone who was killed in action by planting a red, white, and blue garden. Red petunias, white phlox, and blue delphiniums would be stunning in a garden. There is also a Hosta variety called Patriot.

My grandmother loved the scent of lavender, and I cannot imagine anything better to remind me of that dear, sweet woman than walking by the wafting scent of the lavender lining my sidewalk. If the person you want to remember loved a particular scent, planting those flowers can be a won derful reminder. Lilacs are a favorite of many, and their intoxicating scent can remind you of that person every time you walk by Incorporatingthem.a water feature in a remembrance garden will make it a perfect place for reflection. Whether you prefer a tranquil pond or a bab bling waterfall, the sights and sounds of water can help you relax and reflect. I also cannot say enough about the ad dition of lighting to really make a gar den a vision of beauty at night. There are so many solar options out now that the choices are pretty much endless. Windchimes are also comforting and beautiful reminders of a special person. If the person you want to remember didn’t have a favorite flower, a patch of beautiful wildflowers that you plant from seeds can be a stunning reminder of that special someone (as well as a lasting gift for local pollinators). Keep in mind that the honored subject of a special garden doesn’t have to be deceased. Maybe an important mentor in your life loves red flowers. Maybe your grandson always chose purple flowers when he was small. Maybe you’ve seen friends wearing necklaces that contain the birthstones of all their children, and you want to recreate that in a garden. The point of all this is to tell a unique story and celebrate a life, whether passed or ongoing.Amemorial garden can also be planted to remember a special event that meant something wonderful in your life. I carried blush-colored roses and hydrangeas in my wed ding bouquet, so of course I have two blush-colored rose bushes in my yard to remind me of that special time. One caveat to these ideas is to place your garden in a spot that is visible from your home. That way, you can enjoy the view of it even when the weather is not the best. Just imagine it!

Senior living facilities often devote one portion to inde pendent living and another to assisted living. This is ideal for someone who needs housing and care for the long term. It is possible to move from an independent apartment to assisted living, should the need arise, while remaining in the same resi dential complex. A newer concept, known as Continuity of Care, denotes one location that offers independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing.

When seniors need caregiving support, and help from family and friends is not available or is no longer sufficient, where do you turn? How do you know which senior living facility is the right one for you or your loved one? The choices may seem overwhelming, but help is available in navigating this important life change.

46 September 2022 Seasons of Life

While most senior living facilities have similar basic features, there are still many elements to consider. Cost can be a sig nificant factor, and, in my community, there is a wide range of costs. While the average cost for assisted living in the United States is said to be $4,300–$4,500 per month, the cost at indi vidual facilities can vary greatly, especially depending upon the level of care that is needed. Facilities vary greatly in terms of amenities, location, activi

Consider hiring a local service that assists in finding a senior living facility or specializes in downsizing and moving.

Nearly one million American seniors live in assisted living facilities. The average resident age is 84, and the majority of residents are women. The number is expected to double within a few years. For seniors who are no longer able to remain at home, there are several options. They include residential care or independent living, assisted living, memory care, or skilledChoosingnursing.one depends first on a particular senior’s needs. One of our widowed family members did well living inde pendently in a senior housing facility for several years. A small, private apartment with housekeeping and laundry service worked well for her needs. Safety and security features eased everyone’s minds. Then, a stroke made it necessary to have more help with personal care, meals, and managing meds.

Options for Senior Living

Comparing facilities can be a time-consuming task. Here, consultants who are devoted to helping families find a good match for their loved one can use their professional expertise to assist in the process. They typically do not charge for their services but instead are compensated by the facility you ultimately choose.

What You Need to Know

It’s always better to plan ahead, but circumstances do not always allow it. When someone must leave their home with little notice, there is the immediate need to find a facility but also the challenge of prompt downsizing and moving. Even with plenty of family and friends to help, the task can be quiteSeniordaunting.livingconsultants may also provide guidance with the logistics of a move. Because of the growing number of seniors making the move from family home to independent living or assisted living, some moving companies now specialize in this area. Senior moving may be their only focus, or general movers may have spe cialists on board to help seniors organize, downsize, and move. Imagine having caring, professional help with organizing belongings, as well as assistance with donating, selling, or discarding where needed. Together, you’ll decide what will go to the new location.

The pros will establish a plan and arrange all the logistics. Time and stress will be minimized, creating a smoother transition for you or your family member. If you or a loved one is likely to move from home to a senior living facility in the not-too-distant future, why not take pro active steps now? A professional organizer can provide invaluable guidance with sizing down belongings now rather than later. Talk with a senior living consultant and tour local facilities, as well. It is so much easier if done while one is healthy! Sources for this article included: aarp.org, nia.hih.gov, and consumeraffairs.com.

If you obtain professional guidance in this selection process, you’ll let them know your preferred general location, cost range, whether your loved one has memory loss, why a move is needed, how the cost will be financed (pension/savings/family/insur ance), and whether the need is immediate or not. Based on these factors, you’ll be giv en a list of suggested facilities. An advisor answers questions, assists with comparing options, and arranges tours of facilities.

What has this realization done for me? It has brought me inner peace. It has made me happy. It has made me centered. It has made me be in the present. It has made me better. It has made me kind. I have stopped blaming anyone else for the life that I am experi encing. I am owning every experience that comes to me. I am reflect ing and learning from situations that happen throughout my day. Is it a challenge? Yes—some days more than others. Am I appreciative of every interaction? Of every learning lesson? Yes—eventually. Sometimes I appreciate it immediately, sometimes not until days…or weeks…later.

—Buddhism

“If you look at a person and see a monster, know that you are being shown a monster lurking in your own dungeon.”

Being kind, like everything else in our lives, comes down to a decision. Knowing that what we are experiencing has a purpose and a meaning makes it easier to proceed each day. Life is great. I am a better person and I am happy!

“Treat everyone with politeness and kindness, not because they are nice, but because you are.” —Roy T. Bennett

Wow, is that ever true! I have recently come to realize that most attacks against us have nothing to do with us. On the flip side of that coin? When we are rude to another person, it most likely has noth ing to do with them. Ouch. Now that’s a kick in the gut!

Have you ever had the experience when you randomly meet someone, and they are just downright rude to you? It probably takes you by surprise. It is very uncomfortable.“I sure didn’t see that com ing!”When we have this experience, many of us go on the defensive.

Just Be Kind We All Need It

—Laurence Galian Taking a good hard look at my own behavior, and owning my own struggles, is not an easy path. To be blunt, it can be very painful. I have made the decision to reflect in the evening on my interactions throughout the day. This practice has taught me so much about myself. It makes each day a wonderful learning experience. If I had a negative experience, I now know there is something to learn. I finally get that there truly are no accidents, coincidences, or random experiences. Everything happens for a reason. Everything is in Divine Order.

Kids’ questions can get really annoying. “What are you doing?” when you’re obviously pulling weeds or trimming a tree. “Why?” as repeated questioning to every part of your answer…until, in frustration, you finally reply, “Because!”You may also stumble into “Because I said so!” as an answer to “Why do we hafta…?” whether applied to eating, performing some task, or wearing a jacket when Mom thinks it’s cold. One of my favorite kid questions is, “Are we there yet?” When my kids were small, I used it as an excuse to teach map reading and passage of time. Using a map, I would point out: “This is where we started. This is where we’re going. We left at noon, and it takes at least three hours to get there. What do you think?” My now-adult children still delight in asking, “Are we there yet?” shortly after we leave and at fairly regular intervals thereafter. Most importantly, teach your kids question etiquette. Interrupting someone who is doling out information is rude. They’ll usually give more information when asked to clarify. Remember, kids are people, too.

A Few Words

“As an advertiser in Women’s Edition since March of 1996, I’d like to take this opportunity to say how pleased we are with the results we have received from being involved with the magazine. Women’s Edition offers a very professional and effective format that allows us to get the message out to women (even men) regarding all the services we provide. We continue to see consistent potential patients flow to our practice from our marketing in Women’s Edition.” From One of Our Advertisers: —BruceS.Kuhn,M.D.,D.D.S. PM There Yet?” and Questions

Kids ask a lot of questions. It’s how they learn, how they find out things. They learn about asking questions from us— it’s how we teach them and how we adults determine what the kids Recallknow.thetimes you asked your kids to tell you what they know. You hold up a round, red apple. “What’s this?” you ask. “Apple,” they reply. “What color is this apple?” you ask. “Red,” is the reply. You continue, “What shape is this red apple?” The answer may be “round,” or “like a ball,” or “a circle.”You’re pleased. Your kid knows object, color, and shape. I recall one time I did this with my grandson. After a few sessions like this, answering color, object, or shape, he asked, “Grandma, didn’t you learn anything in school?” I learned my lesson and tried to avoid long interrogations in the future. He learned that questions asked get answers. How do you answer your kid’s questions? Most of the time, honesty is the best policy. Susie told me about the time her five-year-old son came home from a play date and pen sively asked, “Mom, where did I come from?”“My mind was in a whirl,” she recalled. “What was I going tell him? I believe in being honest, but...” When she finished her simplified ex planation of the birds and the bees, Johnny looked at her and said, “Oh. Jimmy said he was from Chicago. I just wondered where I was from.” Susie learned to make sure she under stood what her kids were asking and why. It’s probably a good idea to find out what the kids (and other people) really want to know before expounding in the wrong direction.

Panoramic sunroofs have become popular lately—Cadil lac, Nissan, Audi, and Chrysler are all in when it comes to expanding the view. Extended-cab trucks have had swing-out double doors for a while (the front door hinges are at the front and the back door hinges are at the back, resulting in a French door–like space when open). This concept is now moving to automobiles. The all-electric BMW i3 and the Honda Element have featured swing-out double doors recently. Are you giving up safety for some of these new innova tions? The answer is, perhaps. A panoramic sunroof affects the structural integrity of a car. This doesn’t mean it’s not safe to drive, but it’s true that a glass roof is not as strong as a conventional roof would be. Consider your family’s needs for passenger space and cargo, and compare safety ratings before you choose a vehicle. You can buy anything online these days, including a car— but most online car purchases are “as is,” with no options for customization. Nissan seems to be leading the way in manufacturers getting to know their customers online and exceeding their expectations. Specifically, Nissan realizes that customers and potential buyers have changed, and they want to make decisions on their website and not necessarily go to a local dealership when car shopping. That is a pretty impressive innovation. By now we all know about the global supply chain volatility and how manufacturers could not get necessary components in a timely fashion. No matter what new features you’re looking for in a vehicle, you should be prepared to be patient.

52 September 2022 Auto Wise

It probably goes without saying that electric vehicles are the biggest and most important trend in the automotive industry. That includes both foreign and domestic vehicles. You might be interested to know that Europe is now the largest market for electric vehicles, followed by China. Some countries have set out to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. According to those in the know, much of that growth will be driven by regulatory requirements. The biggest rotation in the global vehicle fleet is predicted to take place in the 2030s.

Autonomous vehicles are coming, and they will probably change the face of the industry. There are only about 1,400 self-driving cars on the road in the U.S. now, but we should expect millions on the road over the next couple of decades. Of course, there are some obstacles before we get there. Major regulatory and safety concerns still need to be studied closely, and consumers seem fairly hesitant to embrace the whole self-driving process. The self-driving auto industry has five levels of driving automation, from no automation to driver as sistance to full automation, so we will see what happens. The trucking industry is very interested in the concept of self-driv ing vehicles to move goods around the nation. Vehicles are becoming more and more technologically connected. Basically, that means that vehicles can be defined by their ability to communicate with other software systems and collect data from their surroundings. A good deal of this technology has been driven by 5G technology standards. This demand could lead to improved 5G infrastructure, which sup ports vehicle connectivity. Fuel efficiency is important for everyone. You can help yourself by avoiding things that waste gas: quick accelerations, heavy braking, excessive idling, high speeds, and frequent trips (instead of consolidating errands into one trip). Man ufacturers are doing their part for fuel efficiency by making newer cars out of lighter materials like aluminum and fiber glass instead of heavy steel. The lighter the vehicle, the better gas mileage you get. Fuel efficiency has improved drastically, and I think everyone will be happy with that news. Trends in vehicle design and features change from year to year, and modern cars are broader, lower, and lightweight.

Sources for this article included: autotrader.com, caranddriver. com, and cnet.com. By Linda Sutherland The auto industry is one of the largest and most influential industries on the planet. For many decades, things did not change all that much, but that is no longer the case. Because of rapid environmental and technological innovations, automakers have had to up their game.

Here in the United States, California has committed to phasing out all new sales of combustion engine vehicles over the next few decades. However, the number of public EV charging stations across the nation is just over 53,000—clearly, we need thousands more charging stations to make electric vehicles convenient enough to be mainstream. The good news is that more than 60 percent of Americans have garages that will allow for electric vehicle charging. Auto makers are start ing to increase the range of EVs, and they are becoming more affordable. That’s good news for everyone!

“At Monster, we focus on making each other bet ter,” says Bill Wardell, the owner and general manager of Monster Tree Service in Omaha. “For our customers, that means we act as trusted advisors who work in tandem with you to solve your tree problems.” A culture of respect and growth doesn’t just happen on its own. To build it, Bill focuses the company’s team-building on the follow ing principles: being respectful and positive, hearing and listening, focusing on integrity and responsibility, giving mutual aid, and the acceptance of all. Bill is proud that Monster’s clients see his team as trusted colleagues who can help them keep their plants and trees healthy.

“I wanted to use my talents to lead a firm’s agenda and help set a mutually supportive environment in a company with potential growth,” he explains. He saw this oppor tunity in Monster Tree Service, where he can connect professional arborists with the customers who need their expertise.AtMonster,

Monster Tree Service

Now, the family continues to call on Monster Tree Ser vice to care for and maintain their beloved trees. “I believe the management of this company rises heads above the crowd of other tree service groups. The staff provided work far and above the expectations we had,” Kim adds.

Monster Tree Service has completed more than 2,000 jobs at a variety of sites, from individual residences that needed small tree removals to large acreages with massive cottonwoods that had to be taken out. “There is no typical day,” Bill says. “Every situation is different, and that makes the work even more satisfying. We ensure that all our customers receive the same quality service.” With Monster Tree Services, you won’t get pushed to the bottom of the list if you have a small job!

Bill is responsible for “keeping the lights on,” which includes administrative duties like managing customer calls, following up on leads, assigning jobs, guiding sales, and marketing and staff management. He has eight staff members, including professional arborists.

Bill expects the same excellence from his workers that he expects from himself, and he encourages his staff to attend training seminars. As in many trades, continuing education courses are offered through state and national trade associations like the Nebraska Arborist Association and other related groups. If your trees need some attention, it’s time to get a free assessment from Monster Tree Service. You can make an appointment by calling 402-588-5590 or on their web site at monstertreeservice.com/omaha-north-metro.

Excellent Tree Care, Excellent Service

Bill is a graduate of Notre Dame and has more than 25 years of experience in contracting, construction, real estate, and system integration. He moved from Denver to Omaha in 2006, and started Monster Tree Omaha in 2019.

The beauty of the Omaha area landscape includes the luscious, full-bodied, awe-inspiring trees that are such a vibrant part of our commu nity. This foliage backdrop enhances the splendor of our neighborhoods, the value of properties, and the overall aesthetic of our special city. Maintaining the health of these beautiful trees requires experts who specialize in the craft of tree maintenance and removal. Recent storms, full of high winds and lightning, have struck our area, reminding us of the value of our green spaces and increasing the need for expert tree service.

The experts at Monster Tree Service are dedicated to keeping trees healthy! Their office is located at 3139 South 61st Avenue, Suite 4, in Omaha.

Monster Tree Service is here to help. This locally owned franchise is part of a national company that offers com prehensive tree service with a focus on the customer. Their tree services include tree removal and stump grinding, dead-wooding (clearing out dead wood from a living tree), corrective pruning and thinning, and emergency and storm damage cleanup. They also go smaller, providing landscaping and brush clearing, hedge and shrub pruning, and plant health care.

Kim Walker is a satisfied client who has used the com pany on three different occasions, to handle three different tree issues. “We purchased our home in the Regency area about two and a half years ago,” Kim says. “Initially, we had some storm damage and used Monster. They were ex tremely competent and worked with us to fix the situation. We were so impressed, we hired them to create a different aesthetic tree design at the house. They were absolutely awesome, working through all aspects of the process and providing design solutions that met our requests.”

The safety of property and employees is paramount, and the company adheres to ANSI standards for tree work safety. “When we take on a potential job, we do a handson assessment with a focus on solving problems,” Bill says. “We then outline the scope of work and provide a customized customer proposal, com plete with budget and time frames.”

Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting Chastain Otis Insurance Agency. If you find yourself in need of insurance for your home, automobile, or small business, I trust that you will be greeted with the same warmth and enthusiasm that I received. This family-owned agency has been in business for three generations, and I think they will be in business for many generations to come. Besides a warm welcome, you will receive personal care that is difficult to find in this day and age. Dustin Kowalewski has been with Chastain Otis since 2004, and he will cheerfully talk about what he does there and why he does it.

After some work and diligence, Dustin is now teaching classes in the insurance industry, and he couldn’t be more pleased. He provides ad vanced insurance education to professionals who cover every aspect of the industry. I really do not think there is anything more delightful than seeing a man who feels blessed in his life and his career. This interest and drive to help others is quite obvious when you meet Dustin. When asked about his goals with his clients, he responds by saying that everyone at Chastain Otis has the same overall goal: to turn their clients into long-term customers. “I want to get to know my clients and their lifestyles,” he says. “When I know what they need, I can get them the best coverage at the best rates.” Dustin is an independent insurance agent, and he feels that the Chastain Otis an independent insurance agency is a perfect fit for him. They really value education at this agency—their brokers’ education as well as their clients’ education. Keeping people educated on what is new in the ever-changing insurance industry is a terrific concept.

The other members of the team (including Dustin) bring years of insurance experience to the table, and they all have the same goal: turning new clients into long-term clients by meeting their personal and business insurance requirements in a manner that best suits their needs. The Chastain Otis commitment to their clientele is truly remarkable! Give them a call today at 402-397-2500 or find them online at chastaino tis.com, where you can learn more about the services they offer. Their offices are located at 10822 Old Mill Road, Suite 2, in Omaha.

“We have an amazing team here that works together beautifully,” he continues. “It is an enjoyable experience every day.” Doesn’t that sound fantastic? When a strong team of coworkers fits together and reaches for the same goal, every thing else just falls into place. Dustin’s personal philosophy for work (and for life) is “do the right thing.” I think we’ve all had experiences in which someone does not do the right thing, and it is very comforting to hear Dustin’s philosophy. Why should someone go to Chastain Otis instead of an other agency? “We are one of the largest family-owned insur ance agencies in Nebraska,” Dustin asserts, “and our loyalty and support for our clients is personal as well as powerful.”

Since they are an independent insurance agency, they can offer to work with a variety of insurance companies to find you the best coverage and great rates. They can obtain home insurance, auto insurance, life insurance, or umbrella insurance for their clients. They also offer excellent business insurance to give business owners complete peace of mind. They want to help protect your investment of time and money.Chastain Insurance Agency was originally founded in 1953 by Dick Chastain (combining later with Otis Insurance Agency, founded by Don Otis). Deep cleaning can be a daunting task and, frankly, it’s not much fun. Fortunately, we don’t need to stress about it. Professional cleaners can do the “dirty work” for us. You can often custom ize your package to include additional services such as dishwashing, linen changing, and laundry. Discuss customer satisfaction. What happens if you’re un happy with the services provided? A reputable company will usually offer to return to your home and reclean at no additional cost to you. Let’s talk windows. A popular saying when it comes to cleaning is, “I don’t do windows,” but some cleaning services will clean windows for an additional fee. Alter natively, you may want to hire a window cleaning com pany, particularly if you’re looking for additional services, like cleaning gutters and chimneys, which many window cleaning companies provide. Windows should be cleaned twice a year, in conjunction with spring and fall cleaning. This timing catches your windows at their dirtiest. Fall window cleaning will get rid of the dust and dirt on the inside and pollen and dirt on the outside. Take special care with carpets and rugs, which should be professionally cleaned every 12–18 months. For carpet cleaning, find out if they will move your furniture or if you need to do it in advance. If rugs need to be taken to their cleaning facility, who will transport them? What happens if a rug is damaged? Be sure to mention if you or anyone in the house has allergies or is sensitive to certain chemicals.Hotwater extraction, also known as steam cleaning, is an effective carpet cleaning method. First, the carpet is pretreated; then a pressurized hot water rinse is applied and vacuumed out. Fall is in the air again! We spent the hot summer months traveling and having fun in the great outdoors. While we enjoyed our vacations, everyday dirt and grime certainly didn’t take a vacation from our homes. They sat around the house and multi plied. We did our spring cleaning in anticipation of the summer, and now it’s time to do some deep fall cleaning in preparation for spending more time inside over the winter months.

A cleaning service isn’t just about mopping and dust ing. A good cleaning company trains its employees on safety, professionalism, and customer service. Make sure you know what types of cleaning products will be used in your home. Some harsh products may damage delicate surfaces and need to be used with care. Other products may release toxic fumes that can pose a health hazard. Some sur faces such as cook tops and flooringwoodrequire special cleaning products and equipment. Clarify the cost up front. You need to know how the charges are calculated and what the total cost will be.

It’s important to ask questions before hiring a profes sional service. First of all, how long has the company been in business? A cleaning service that has been around for a while has had time to build a solid reputation. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t hire a new company; everyone has to start somewhere, and a new company may still have seasoned employees. Any reputable company should be happy to provide references from current customers. Whether it’s an established or fledgling company, make sure they are licensed, bonded, and insured. They should have general liability insurance, as well as worker’s compensation insurance. Find out how they screen their employees. Background checks? Drug screening? Profes sional cleaners will be in the nooks and crannies of your home, so you want them to be people you trust.

Isn’t replacing an old fireplace with something new going to be extremely costly? Not if you consider refacing instead of replacing. Refacing is exactly what it sounds like: updating the surface of your fireplace without having to change its core build. Materials like concrete or stucco can be purchased as mixes and troweled over existing framework; wood paneling can be installed on top, as well. You can even maintain a stone fireplace but update the look with masonry veneers. Stone slabs or tile can be installed, just like a kitchen backsplash.

With fall on the horizon, it’s time to start thinking about how you’re going to enjoy cozying up to a roaring fire this winter. When the evening chill gets too cold enjoy the fire pit on the patio, why not bring the party indoors to stay warm in front of the fireplace?

Of course, refacing a fireplace only gives it a new look. What if you also want to change up how your fireplace functions? Fireplace inserts can help you change a cumber some, log-burning hearth to one that’s easier to use and more energy-efficient.Fireplaceinserts come in three main types: pellet or wood-burning, natural gas or propane, and electric. Wood/ pellet inserts are best in large rooms and are the most complex of the three types. They tend to have a more intri cate installation process as well as more involved operation (you’ll need to keep pellets on hand to use it). Natural gas or propane is a nice mid-range option, as it can be set up by extending your home’s existing gas lines over to the hearth. Gas fireplaces are generally cheaper to maintain over time. Electric fireplaces are by far the most affordable option, but they are really only good for small rooms, since they aren’t able to provide as much heat as the other two options. What they lack in power they make up for in flexibility of placement. You can plug them in virtually anywhere in a room.

If you already have a fireplace in your home, it’s likely a traditional brick fireplace, and it may be time to give it a facelift. Current trends are moving toward the flexibility in design that gas fireplaces bring. Integrated fireplaces are on the rise, with custom-built walls that can house your fireplace insert, mounted TV, sound system, and more. Double-sided fireplaces are also making a comeback, with their ability to make a room feel simultaneously open-concept and sec tioned-off. If you’ve got the space for it, very large fireplaces are also seeing a rise in popularity.

Since they’re using a clean-burning fuel (or, in the case of electric, not burning any thing at all), there’s no need for a chim ney or vent to keep your home from filling with smoke. Before you rush out to purchase a ventless fireplace, check your local regulations. Some states do have restrictions on where you can place a ventless gas fireplace in your home (there are no restrictions for electric). The contractor or professional you hire to install the gas lines should be familiar with any restrictions in your state or municipality. If you like the old-fashioned look of your existing fireplace but its brick and mortar have seen better days, look into tuck-pointing. Tuck-pointing is a pro cess in which old, degraded mortar is removed from still-viable brickwork and replaced with new mortar and putty. It’s a great way to breathe new life into any historical brickwork in your home while maintaining its vintage aesthetic. There’s no getting around the fact that a fireplace comes with some extra responsibility. Whether you’re keep ing your classic log-burning hearth or getting a new gas or electric one, you need to keep up on fireplace safety. Appropriate ventilation is always im portant, and installing a safety screen and carbon monoxide detectors is highly recommended. Regular cleaning is essential for all fireplaces, includ ing an annual professional inspection. Wood-burning units should be cleaned after or before each use by removing cooled ashes from previous fires. Chim neys and gas fireplaces should be pro fessionally cleaned on an annual basis. The company that installed or refaced your fireplace can do this cleaning or recommend a cleaning specialist. Whether you’re giving your old fire place a quick refurbishment or having a whole new energy-efficient gas or electric unit installed, having a work ing fireplace in your home adds to the ambience of any room. It can also lower your heating bill this winter. Any way you look at it, you can’t lose! It is crucial to carefully re view the event contract before signing. If you understand what is included, you can avoid unpleasant surprises during the planning process. Does the contract require a minimum headcount? Are setup and cleanup included? What happens if a guest damages some thing? What is the cancellation policy (including fees)? Does the facility have appropriate licenses and insurance? As you read the contract, pay attention to details such as the event date, times, included amenities, and extra fees.

Planning a holiday party, even a big one, doesn’t have to take all your free time, especially if you start early. Estab lishing a budget, renting an event venue, hiring a caterer, and renting party items can save you time, money, and stress. Professional help is always available!

Fall brings cooler weather, vibrant colors, pumpkin everything, and thoughts about the upcoming holidays. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, and New Year’s Eve are on their way here. Are you planning to celebrate with family and friends? If you are hosting a holiday party, now is the time to start planning. Planning your holiday party in advance means you’ll have more time to enjoy yourself and participate in creating long-lasting memories.

If the venue does not provide food, you will need to choose a caterer. Friends, relatives, and the venue can pro vide recommendations. Set up interviews and ask if you can schedule a tasting. After confirming that the caterer is avail able on your party date, find out if they have previous expe rience at your venue. Do they have a set menu, or can you customize your selections? Do they offer the type of service you need, such as plated, buffet, food stations, or heavy hors d’oeuvres? Can they handle special dietary needs? Do they make food at the venue or deliver from their own kitchens? Does the caterer have the necessary licenses and liability insurance? Is there a coordinator on-site for the event? Review the standard contract, deposit requirements, cancellation policy, and payment requirements before youPartysign.

Enjoy the Process and Your Party

Once a budget is established, choosing an event venue should be next on the list. How do you select the right ven ue for your party? The budget, desired location, party size, and event date will be the main factors in your decision. At every venue you consider, find out what is included in the rental. Inquire about things like staffing, security, tables, chairs, linens, centerpieces, Wi-Fi, and audiovisual needs. Does the venue require the use of a specific caterer, or can you choose your own? Are there alcohol restrictions? Does the venue provide alco hol, or do you provide your own? Are there any decorat ing restrictions? Adequate and well-lit parking and ADA-compliant facilities and entrances are also important.

Your first step should be setting priorities and devel oping a budget. How much do you want to spend? How formal will your event be, and how large? Include costs such as venue rental, food, beverages, decorations, enter tainment, rental items, and invitations. Adjust priorities as necessary to stay on track and prevent overspending.

rental companies offer a wide variety of items to make an event special. Renting items you’re unlikely to use often is eco-friendly and often more cost-effective than purchasing. Another benefit is that you will not have to clean or store items after the event. You simply take the things back or arrange for the vendor to pick them up. Linens and tableware are commonly rented and range from informal to elegant. Linen options often include cotton, polyester, linen, satin, organza, taffeta, and raw silk. Tableware selections may include traditional, elegant, and modern. You can also rent decorative items like centerpiec es, arches, backdrops, and specialty lighting. Whatever level of formality you’re planning, party rentals can help you set the mood. Need any ideas for entertainment?

Preplanning Holiday Parties

Casino rental items like blackjack, poker, craps, or roulette tables pro vide fun for adults. Family-friendly lawn games such as ring toss, tic-tactoe, bean bag launches, and bowling are sure to keep kids entertained. Karaoke machines and selfie back grounds are also popular party items that can help you and your guests remember your event. Once you’ve decided on your event details, you need to invite guests to your party. Invitation choices are as varied as party types. Flat invitations are appropriate for casual events. Folded and pocket invitations are often used for more formal occasions that require an RSVP. Mail invita tions out at least one month in advance to ensure guests have enough notice and time to let you know whether or not they’re coming. If you’re planning a holiday party on the holiday itself, you should give your guests as much notice as Planningpossible.your holiday party in advance means you’ll have more time to enjoy yourself and participate in creating long-lasting memories. By Janet Van deWalle “It’s not about changing THEM; it’s about healing YOU.” —Shannon Tanner Do you want to leave your frustrations behind you? Do you want to be happier? Do you want to be at peace? It’s time! Pointing our finger at others and blaming them for not being the people WE want them to be, so that WE can be happy, is truly insane. Spending our lives trying to change the people we have relationships with will, more often than not, result in not having a very good day…or a very good life.

—Carol Burnett Just make the decision and do it!

“It had nothing to do with changing people—forget that! On a good day, you’re lucky if you can talk someone into changing their socks.” —David Sedaris Looking to others to make us happy, to bring us joy, is a burden we shouldn’t put on anyone, especially on those we love. Expecting someone to behave like WE want them to…so that WE can be hap py…is a futile goal. Feeling peace and joy happens when we realize that only WE can make this happen.

“Incredible change happens in your life when you decide to take control of what you do have power over instead of craving control over what you don’t.” —Steve Maraboli So how? How do we stop this crazy loop, this pattern that so many of us have of looking to others or to “things” to bring us joy? How do we stop believing that conditions have to change before we can be happy?

Easier said than done? Nope. Play positive music in your car. Read positive, uplifting stories. There is an app called Good News that focuses on positive news stories. Download it and read it, and stop listening to or watching or reading all that other news. When you go to bed at night, pat yourself on the back for all the positive interactions that you had, all the times that you made people smile. Open the door for the people coming in after you. Say please and thank you.

64 September 2022 Positive Perspective

It is impossible for our brain to hold two conflicting thoughts at the same time. When we put our attention toward the positive, the negative can’t hang around anymore. You can’t change anyone but yourself.
