Christine
So much has changed and improved in the last 20 years with the most popular renovations has been induction hobs and boiling water taps. From a style point of view handles-less kitchens have improved massively and the most popular colour has shifted from ivory to light grey which makes accessorising your kitchen easier and more forgivable to future trends as you don’t have to accommodate the yellow hue from ivory. I would hazard a guess the future innovations are likely to be along the lines of removing worktop clutter, so maybe integrated toasters or better devises to bring stand mixers up from base units up to worktop height?

A little bit of history
“A big WELCOME and enjoy”
Alton was recorded in the Domesday Survey of 1086 and takes its name from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning ‘farmstead at the source of the river’ due its location at the source of the River Wey. It also happens to be the highest town in Hampshire. St. Lawrence Church, dating from the 11th century, was part of the Battle of Alton, a skirmish in the civil war.
The Curtis Museum in Alton has one of the finest local history collections in the county.
Alton offers a delightful mix of historic buildings and modern properties, with a classic Georgian high street. There are a wide variety of properties to buy and rent within the town and surrounding villages, from contemporary town houses and apartments to characterful country cottages to large country and equestrian properties.

You can lean on me to put together a clear plan, graft in the background and to keep decisions focused on what matters most to you. After all, it is your house!
One of my clients kindly summarised their experience of working together as;
“Christine is relentlessly positive, which is her superpower, especially given the stress of construction. She is always solutions focused, and willing to find paths to seemingly impossible problems.”
My passion is interior design and creating homes that you love to live in. I’m a sucker for clever storage and bespoke joinery. Sometimes getting it ‘just right’ means a layout change, creating new openings or adding some extra space. Often this means hiring an Architect as well as an interior designer which can be costly and involve extra logistics. Sadly, the interiors considerations often take second place because the shell comes first. But, making the necessary plans for the pendants you want and getting the furniture arrangement just right is what makes a house a home. I have a hard-won architectural qualification and the experience to work through all of this with you from the outset without the need for a separate appointment. I can oversee and deliver all aspects of a renovation; whether we are doing up a bathroom, furnishing a living room or stripping back to bare bones. All whilst talking cabinet handles and wine storage.
How can people work with you?
KVIST is a boutique design studio, working with just a couple of clients at a time. We are a small team and I run every project personally. The first step is to get in touch and have a friendly chat over a coffee.
Services we offer include;
- Pre-purchase property assessment and design pack to inspire you.
- Advice for sellers on how to maximise the property’s potential prior to marketing.
- Full or partial property reconfiguration including the design of extensions and loft conversions.
- Detailed kitchen, bathroom and joinery design.
- Interior decoration and furniture procurement.
- Standalone workshops for DIY’ers on layout, colour, furniture, lighting and ironmongery.

Interview with ‘Alton Barn Kitchens’
homework while their parents prepare dinner. So the way we use our kitchens has gone from being just a food storage and preparation area to being a space where our families get together and also entertain our guests. So the way we design these spaces in order to cater for all these uses and because the kitchen is now on display the design not only has to be more functional but also beautiful.
How big an area do you cover?
Please tell us a little about the background of your firm?
I decided to take the leap and start my own kitchen and bathroom studio in 2016 when I had already been working in the kitchen industry for 15 years, most recently for a manufacturer where I would visit the showrooms selling their kitchens and train their staff, design their displays and manage their trade accounts. I had been working with our display installer Mark for about 5 years at this point where I had designed the displays the showrooms needed updating and Mark and his team would install them. I had admired his commitment to ensuring the products were installed to a very high standard and his eye for details that made our customers displays look as good as they could as well as installing some fantastic , challenging display concepts. After 5 years of working together to make other peoples kitchen showroom businesses look and operate as well as possible we decided to team up and open a showroom of our own.
Why do you think Kitchens have become so important to the renovation industry?
Traditionally kitchens were small back rooms at the back of a house that were purely functional. Over the years the way we live and entertain in our homes have transformed the kitchen from a necessity to the hub of modern living where the space given to the kitchen has increased but so has the functions it is used for. Now the kitchen is a much more social space often open to the dining room and incorporating flexible seating areas for quick meals, for kids to do
We cover all of Hampshire and Surrey (outside of the M25) but we deliver nationally.
How do you see the future in terms of the evolution of kitchens?
So much has changed and improved in the last 20 years with the most popular renovations has been induction hobs and boiling water taps. Planning & Building Control
Unsure which services you need?
If you are thinking of making changes to your property, you may need to apply for planning permission and / or Building Regulations approval. If you’re not sure which applications to make, please use the guidance below to help you to decide what you need to do.
Please note that many developments will require both.
What is planning?
Planning is the process of deciding whether a proposed development should go ahead or not. It uses national and local policies to consider the development in its context and may look at the impact of the work on neighbours and the wider community, existing architecture, the land, the layout, and existing or proposed infrastructure (such as drains, transport and schools).
You will probably need planning permission if your proposed development will do any of the following:
• create a new building, or change the use or appearance of an existing building
• affect the sunlight, privacy or outlook for neighbouring properties
• affect the nearby area with noise disturbance, smell or fumes
• work on or around listed buildings or any conservation areas
• affect traffic volumes, road safety or access
• change the density of development in an area
• use significantly different materials or finishes from nearby properties
• have an effect on existing trees
www.easthants.gov.uk/planning-services
What is building control?
Building control applies national statutory regulations to ensure the structural quality of any building work, in areas such as safety, public health, accessibility, and the materials used. Most substantial building projects (such as an extension, knocking down walls or converting a garage or loft) will need Building Regulations approval.
www.easthants.gov.uk/building-control
