Relocate & Rejuvenate
Barbados

Whether it's designing residential villas or communities, collaborating on purpose-built institutional buildings, or envisioning cuttingedge commercial spaces, we are most excited by projects that allow us to innovate and also make a positive impact on the community. We have done quite a bit of renovative design work as well where we get the opportunity to modernise older classic architectural work which is often a somewhat stoic exercise.

Tell us a little of the background of FORMwork?

FORMwork Architecture (FWA) was founded with a vision to blend innovation with functionality white creating spaces that inspire and endure. It is our philosophy that architecture is a creative process traversed from coarse concept to refined construct. The concept is rough, ambiguous and messy but it is progressively restrained and constrained by the variables of client, infrastructural context, planning, technology and budget until a functioning sculpture is achieved. With a diverse team of architects, designers, and planners, we have forged a reputation for excellence in architectural design, urban planning, and sustainable development. Our portfolio mostly comprises residential design, but it also spans commercial, hospitality, and cultural projects, each bearing the hallmark of meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of local context.

The most satisfying aspect of our work is witnessing the transformation of ideas into tangible spaces that enhance the lives of people. Seeing our designs become integral parts of the urban fabric, fostering connectivity and achieving client satisfaction, is what gives us the most joy and fulfillment.

aspect of our work.

What is your recipe for a successful residential project?

Most

We see ourselves as more than just an architectural firm; we are strategic partners committed to delivering exceptional results for our clients regardless of project scope or size. With a deep-rooted understanding of the dynamics that are governed by budget, culture, regulations, and environmental considerations, we offer a holistic approach to design and development. Our track record of successful projects, especially in the residential space, coupled with our emphasis on sustainability and innovation, makes us the ideal choice for developers and investors seeking solutions tailored to their unique respective requirements.

What is your favourite building in Barbados?

Seaduced is one of our favorite buildings at FWA.

phasing. Pre-exchange assessments are facilitated via a free initial consultation that allows each client to shape their vision, gain valuable insight into the design and development process, and define a broad construction budget. In addition, 3D visualisations can provide homeowners with a preview of their residence, a welcome assurance that their ideas have been faithfully translated in blueprint. Ultimately, we invest in your Caribbean dream home with you, knowing that a residential project can be a once in a lifetime celebration.

Do you have a preferred design style?

What types of design commissions get your team most excited?

Our design style is not fixed. We are skilled in developing a client’s preferred style and creating a quality design experience. In this modern era we believe that the eclectic approach to design best serves the desires of our varied client base. The dynamic nature of our key design architects has allowed us to produce quality and excellence in any style of architecture, from modern and contemporary to classical and traditional. Each client has individual and dynamic histories that influence architectural tastes and personal expression. We encourage our clients to consider the ideas that they are most passionate about and we accentuate desired features in a unifying design language.

At FWA, we thrive on challenges that push the boundaries of creativity and functionality.

This villa presented the challenge of navigating restrictive boundaries to maximize the otherwise difficult to access views of the Caribbean sea. Nestled within the heart of the historic Royal Westmoreland gated community, the covenants required a traditional exterior, while the client required a modern interior, which paved the way for a captivating juxtaposition, showcasing our ability to innovate within constraints. Seaduced draws you in with its bold lines and expansive timber facades, inviting you into a space where the boundaries between outdoor and indoor are ambiguous. Seaduced highlights our creative vision and expertise and provides a snapshot of the type of work prospective clients can expect from us.

Some words of encouragement to the family who are hesitating to make that first call to an architect?

Building or renovating a home has always been a very personal experience for most clients. We recommend that you take the time to find the team that understands you and the location that inspires you. At the end of the day, all projects have a cost in time and resources, but what you want is a finished product of a quality and style that has meaning for you.

KEVIN BROWNE

What types of design commissions get your team most excited?

At FWA, we thrive on challenges that push the boundaries of creativity and functionality.

Which part of your job gives you the most satisfaction?

The most satisfying aspect of our work is witnessing the transformation of ideas into tangible spaces that enhance the lives of people. Seeing our designs become integral parts of the urban fabric, fostering connectivity and achieving client satisfaction, is what gives us the most joy and fulfillment.

Why is FWA the right choice for developers and investors in Barbados?

Getting to know Dusor Architects with Terrence Sobers

After completing the award-winning Millennium City Centre redevelopment project design alongside Leeds Civic Architect John Thorpe, I returned to Barbados where I served as project architect for a well-respected practice before establishing DCA in 2010. My Barbadian heritage, merged with the British and European architectural foundation, fostered a fresh perspective on architecture and culture that inspired my design process. DCA was founded as a full-service architectural firm that united my expertise in building design and contract administration with my wife’s proficiency in landscape design and earned us global recognition through winning an International Property Award. We offer our clients a team that values the environment as much as we do quality and cost. From inception, we have been driven by a passion to create elegance in architectural line and imbue every space with a distinctive sense of place. DCA is dedicated to creativity and excellence in every aspect of our work.

What is your recipe for a successful residential project?

Most importantly, we believe in building relationships with our clients – good rapport sets a great platform for a wonderful project. Also, good design is not only attractive, but cost and time-efficient; hence we work alongside our clients to streamline processes such as statutory approvals or construction phasing.

Our design style is not fixed. We are skilled in developing a client’s preferred style and creating a quality design experience. In this modern era we believe that the eclectic approach to design best serves the desires of our varied client base. The dynamic nature of our key design architects has allowed us to produce quality and excellence in any style of architecture, from modern and contemporary to classical and traditional. Each client has individual and dynamic histories that influence architectural tastes and personal expression. We encourage our clients to consider the ideas that they are most passionate about and we accentuate desired features in a unifying design language.

Interview with Arrow Construction

Tell us a little about the background of your firm?

Arrow Construction began towards the end of 2016. After being involved in another Construction Company for 18 years it was time to move on and to open Arrow Construction. At the time, our main focus was on small renovations projects and home maintenance however over the years we have developed into residential and commercial builders while still keeping a focus on where we started with the renovations and maintenance. We have structured our organisation to be able to focus on all required projects , large and small.

At the time ACL started we also opened our sister company Arrow Woodworking which is a full bespoke joinery shop. Again over the years the business has grown where we now manufacture kitchens, cabinets, windows and doors and much more. Both companies compliment each other!

What type of projects have you been working on recently?

Arrow has been working on new house builds, warehousing and continues to focus on small works i.e. renovations and maintenance.

Do you work with investors and landlords? Yes, directly and indirectly.

Looking back, is there a job that you are most proud of?

There are many we are proud of however one that stands out for us is Archer’s Hall Design Center in Speightstown. Unfortunately this 300 year old building was gutted by fire in 2020. We were contracted to rebuild but at the same time to focus on the heritage and to maintain the original look and feel as best as possible. While very challenging, we were able to achieve all of this and more!

Are you happy to give appraisals to Island Villa clients before they exchange?

Yes we are. We have done this in the past and will continue to work with Island Villas as needed.
