I have never been one to go along with a trend – don’t get me wrong, I do love a trend, but I don’t let it dictate my designs – and I let my clients know that. They are living in the space, so it needs to tick their boxes not a trend’s at the time.

In developing a style for a client’s property who takes the lead or is it a collaborative effort?

most popular requests clients?

Put simply, we know what we are doing and love doing it! As with so many things these days, the internet can only take you so far. Conveniently, you are able to find plenty of ideas, hacks and inspiration for pretty much anything, but how on earth do you pull it all together? I love how DIY interior design is made so obtainable through so many mediums, allowing you to recreate that perfect little nook worthy of the ‘grid’, however is that ‘perfect’ nook perfect for you – the individual? This I believe is where we, as Interiors Designers, are essential in the design process. Not only do we ensure your vision is brought to life and looks amazing, but we also ensure it works in every way for each and every individual. We all work so differently; we are different in our wants, needs and how we live our lives from day to day. And it’s our job to listen to those requirements, pick out the important details, and incorporate them seamlessly into the design… all within the budget, time frame and ensuring it’s done right first time.

What type of projects get you most excited?

light into the property as space for family and friends usually as part of a Kitchen / room. The Living space area which most clients along with additional growing family. The most for a dedicated home whether this is attached to separate room or nook outbuilding for work and also seeing a growing need self-contained annexes whether for a relative or Nanny / Au-pair.

This may sound cheesy, but every single one, and that’s why I love my job! I could be working on the same types of rooms, at the same time, but for different clients and each design would be totally different. Which is what makes it so exciting. It never gets stale as I get to challenge myself and my team with every brief (no matter how big or small), learning new things each time – which can influence the next project.

Who or what have been your major influences and role models?

The client is my influence. I have always been aware of how a space can make an individual, couple, family or group feel. I very much have them at the centre of each of my designs, ensuring every decision

I would say it’s a collaborative effort. When I first meet with a client, it’s my opportunity to get to know them (and them to know me) and understand their way of living and how they tick from day to day. If they have a favourite style, I always love to know, but many times client don’t know exactly what they do love, and that’s my job to find out, whether it be via: a piece of furniture, a favourite colour or even clothing – it’s amazing what these unrelated items and a one-to-one chat can divulge about a person. The development of a style is very much a team effort… I’m a designer who likes to work alongside my clients and make them part of the process, allowing them to discover and work out exactly what they like and why with my help. That way the design works on every level.

Is there a project that you are most proud of?

As mentioned, I have absolutely loved being part of so many projects from bars, restaurants and offices to the more intimate residential projects. But, at this moment in time I am most proud of the new eb Interiors showroom based in The Wool Market, Cirencester. We have created an inspiring and relaxing space allowing our clients to feel very much at home. We find this helps people in expressing their creativity and style. The showroom has proven the perfect space for just that, whether it be during our initial free 1 hour consultation or collaboration further down the line.

A little bit of history

“A big WELCOME and enjoy”

The cathedral city of Chichester has a long history as a Roman settlement, with the original city walls over two metres thick, later replaced by a Georgian wall. The city is best known for its fabulous 12th-century cathedral, which occupies a central setting at the heart of the city and not only provides a place for worship but also an events space, community hub and venue for the arts and music. Other historical sites include the Butter Market, built in 1808, and the ornate Chichester Cross, dating back to 1501.

There is a diverse mix of property in Chichester, ranging from grand period properties around the North, East, South and West Pallant within the city’s ancient walls, to modern properties including contemporary houses and apartments on new developments. The city centre housing is deceptively quiet and close to the best shops and restaurants. The Summersdale area, about a mile north of the centre, is also a popular area with handsome double-fronted Victorian houses. The popular Canal Basin area has stunning apartments with views of the water.

Why move to Chichester?

Chichester is a compact and attractive city that quite literally has everything you could possibly need on the doorstep, from fine dining and relaxed cafes to independent boutiques and household-name stores.

Those living in Chichester can benefit from the best of both worlds: the city and

the seaside, and from its favourable location near the south coast you can travel to London in just over an hour. It’s the ideal place for commuters and families to live. The goodvalue Victorian terraces within the historic centre and large family houses attract a diverse mix of home buyers, from young families to those looking to retire to a well-connected

town close to the sights of the south coast, and a good number of secondhome owners too. The city is the county town of West Sussex, located 75 miles south-west of London on the A27 coast road. The city also attracts those seeking easy access to the great outdoors, with sailing in Chichester Harbour a big draw.

www.hamptons.co.uk 8

Ideal living

Chichester is well placed for enjoying the beautiful countryside of the South Downs National Park and the Chichester Harbour AONB. For beaches, West Wittering is a popular area for swimming. For those who prefer to take to the water, there are several sailing villages including Itchenor and Bosham, along with Chichester Harbour. Within the city, Priory Park and the Litten Gardens offer green spaces for dog walking.

After a night at the theatre – or the Cineworld Cinema –there is a fantastic choice of restaurants, bars and pubs to choose from. Along with nationwide favourites such as Bill’s, Smith & Western and Carluccio’s, there are a number of independent restaurants offering Mediterranean dining, British bistro fare and Asian cuisines. St Pancras is a popular road with a variety of pubs, takeaways and international restaurants.

Chichester shopping is excellent, including a wealth of independent

boutiques and food shops, in addition to popular High Street names such as Hotel Chocolat, Jack Wills, Topshop, Mango and Paperchase. There is a host of cultural and leisure pursuits including the renowned Festival Theatre – the scene of many top plays and shows over the years, Pallant House Gallery and the famous Goodwood Estate which has a golf and leisure club along with horse racing and motor events.

Interview with ‘Architectural Services’

Tell us a little of the background of your Architectural practice?

I started up my practice in 2010 when I moved out of London with my wife and then 6-month-old daughter. I wanted to provide a competitively priced service that also considered the buildability of the project as well as creating spaces that function well along with innovative design. We are a small team of 3 that consists of a Land and Measured Building Surveyor, Architectural Assistant plus myself. We work on predominantly residential projects ranging from internal remodelling and renovation through extensions, loft conversions and new build houses for private clients and developers.

As a Father of 2 girls I have a good understanding of what families are looking for through first-hand experience. We handle the entire process and manage the planning and building regulations applications on behalf of our clients.

Do you offer pre-exchange assessments to residential clients?

Yes, we can work with clients to visit the property to offer advice on the scope and development potential of the property. If required, we can then put together feasibility sketches of a proposed scheme usually using Hampton’s floor plans as a starting point. We will research the local area and provide advice on what is likely

to be acceptable to the local authority based on local policy and previously approved projects in the area. We have worked closely with the local councils for more than 12 years, so we have a good understanding of local planning policy and what is likely to be granted permission.

What are the most popular requests from residential clients?

Better flow and light into the property as well as a social space for family and friends to gather, usually as part of a Kitchen / Dining / Family room. The Living space is usually the area which most clients are focused on along with additional bedrooms for a growing family. The most recent trend is for a dedicated home working area, whether this is attached to the property in a separate room or nook or as a multi-use outbuilding for work and play. We are also seeing a growing need for self-contained annexes whether for a dependant relative or Nanny / Au-pair.

Is there a project you are most proud of?

The projects that make us feel most proud are when a client comes back to us after the project has been completed to tell us how well the space works and how the small, seemingly insignificant details, made the biggest difference to how the space feels. It’s this feedback that gives us the greatest job satisfaction and pride.

Planning & Building Control

Unsure which services you need?

If you are thinking of making changes to your property, you may need to apply for planning permission and / or Building Regulations approval. If you’re not sure which applications to make, please use the guidance below to help you to decide what you need to do.

Please note that many developments will require both.

What is planning?

Planning is the process of deciding whether a proposed development should go ahead or not. It uses national and local policies to consider the development in its context and may look at the impact of the work on neighbours and the wider community, existing architecture, the land, the layout, and existing or proposed infrastructure (such as drains, transport and schools).

You will probably need planning permission if your proposed development will do any of the following:

• create a new building, or change the use or appearance of an existing building

• affect the sunlight, privacy or outlook for neighbouring properties

• affect the nearby area with noise disturbance, smell or fumes

• work on or around listed buildings or any conservation areas

• affect traffic volumes, road safety or access

• change the density of development in an area

• use significantly different materials or finishes from nearby properties

• have an effect on existing trees

www.chichester.gov.uk/planning

What is building control?

Building control applies national statutory regulations to ensure the structural quality of any building work, in areas such as safety, public health, accessibility, and the materials used. Most substantial building projects (such as an extension, knocking down walls or converting a garage or loft) will need Building Regulations approval.
