Enjoy the magic/heritage and charm
A little bit of history
Cornwall, located in the southwestern corner of England, boasts a rich and diverse history that spans millennia. Evidence suggests human habitation in Cornwall dates back to the Palaeolithic era, with significant settlements established during the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. The region’s mineral wealth, particularly in tin and copper, attracted Phoenician and Greek traders, who established early trading connections. Cornwall was later incorporated into the Roman Empire, although the extent of Roman influence in the region remains a topic of debate among historians. Following the collapse of Roman rule, Cornwall became part of the Kingdom of Dumnonia, later integrating into Anglo-Saxon England. However, Cornwall retained its distinct Celtic identity, evidenced by the survival of the Cornish language.
The Middle Ages saw Cornwall prospering through its mining industry, with tin being a vital commodity traded throughout Europe. The Duchy of Cornwall was established in the 14th century, granting the region a degree of autonomy. Cornwall’s maritime significance grew during the Age of Exploration, with its ports serving as departure points for expeditions to the New World. In modern times, Cornwall has evolved into a cultural hub, celebrated for its picturesque landscapes, rich heritage, and thriving tourism industry.

Interview with Stewart, Garden Designer at Muddy Wellies Gardens
Mission
Our mission is to offer reliable, professional and creative Garden Design, Landscaping and Garden Maintenance services in Cornwall.
We seek out and invest in the right staff, all of whom have a genuine passion and interest in horticulture or garden design & landscaping. We train and upskill our team who are approachable, friendly, and hard working. We actively encourage knowledge sharing and ongoing learning.
Our clients and their gardens benefit from the knowledge within the team which helps to ensure we constantly deliver a top-quality service.
So you’ve collected the keys and moved into a new house with a generous-sized garden but no character or features. What’s the first step? After an initial questionnaire we would start by asking what they want to do in their garden.
Once we have established the activities we can start to allocate those areas into the garden in the most appropriate place. The garden will very quickly develop its own features and a character that reflects the people the garden is intended for.
What if a client is selling a house and needs to add some ’kerb appeal’ they may not want to invest as much as a buyer, what would you suggest?
Details matter: If there is supposed to be a straight-line border, set up a string line and make sure its straight and crisp. Prune shrubs that have started to grow into each other to give a bit more definition. Mulch borders to help supress weeds, this will also help free up some of your time in move preparations. Add a couple of seasonal displays in pots and make sure they are weed free and looking at their best. Small actions can have a
big impact, like making a bed in a messy room will instantly make the room look a lot tidier.
People can be influenced by things they see in gardening shows. What sort of things are on trend at the moment?
The trend over the last 10 years has been the increase in indoor/outdoor living. This is still showing true in many of our enquiries.
For those with overlooked gardens design solutions which provide privacy tend to be important. We often see these factors combined as part of a design brief.
We have also seen an increase in concern for wildlife and sustainability, which is increasingly reflected in our clients’ design requests. Planting palettes are often chosen not only to suit the client and the garden conditions but also with wildlife and pollinators in mind. We find that many clients wish to create relaxing, therapeutic garden spaces, an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, a sanctuary for both people and wildlife!
Do most of your clients have specific ideas about what they want or do they look to you for inspiration?
There’s an even split here!
Many of our clients start with a shopping list of things they think they would like and through the process of discussion and planning the list is filtered and arranged into a cohesive design to work for the client and the space.
Others are unsure of what they want. In this case we spend a little more time getting to know the client and their preferences. We take inspiration from their home and garden space to come up with ideas to suit them. We find that these clients tend to be decisive on what they don’t like so it is normally a fairly swift process to hone down to a workable brief after a couple of discussions.
Our design process isn’t just a product we produce and say “ta-da”. We involve our clients throughout the development phase sending quick snapshots of ideas or little videos to help ensure that the final concept is the best match possible for our clients and their spaces.
Finally, please sum up why people should choose Muddy Wellies Gardens for their project?
We are real people who are individually passionate, talented and trained who, as a team provide a professional, friendly and bespoke garden service!

Outlaws New Road
“Over the past two decades, I have dedicated my craft to the pursuit of seafood excellence, uncovering original techniques and recipes whilst harnessing the nuances of classical seafood cookery. The dishes prepared at Outlaw’s New Road reflect the location and time of the ingredients gathered, even to the day; we consider the subtle changes in produce and raw components as each season evolves. Our aim is to elevate seafood.” –Nathan Outlaw

The Seafood Restaurant
Our flagship restaurant in Padstow was opened by Rick Stein and Jill Stein in 1975. Nearly 50 years on, the menu at The Seafood Restaurant still reflects everything that Rick set out to achieve – a celebration of great quality fish and shellfish, simply cooked. Head Chef Pete Murt leads the way now, with his team perfectly recreating Rick’s recipes time and time again for guests to experience – including lobster thermidor, turbot hollandaise and Indonesian seafood curry. The seafood bar at the heart of the restaurant is where you’ll find people watchers and real food enthusiasts who want to find out more about everything from our team behind the bar as they shuck oysters and pour drinks.

The Square at Porthleven
Overlooking its picturesque Cornish harbour, a wonderful place to sit, relax and enjoy the view. The brasserie-style menu, warm welcome and relaxed atmosphere make for a perfect setting at which to enjoy a chilled lunch, a relaxed dinner or even just coffee and cake. And on warmer days, why not dine al fresco on our partially covered terrace? We like to welcome everyone to The Square at Porthleven, so we offer a healthy children’s menu, where our chef has created some special offerings with our younger diners in mind. We love dogs, and even though they are not allowed inside, they are very welcome to relax on our terrace.

Planning & Building Control
Unsure which services you need?
If you are thinking of making changes to your property, you may need to apply for planning permission and / or Building Regulations approval. If you’re not sure which applications to make, please use the guidance below to help you to decide what you need to do.
Please note that many developments will require both.
What is planning?
Planning is the process of deciding whether a proposed development should go ahead or not. It uses national and local policies to consider the development in its context and may look at the impact of the work on neighbours and the wider community, existing architecture, the land, the layout, and existing or proposed infrastructure (such as drains, transport and schools).
You will probably need planning permission if your proposed development will do any of the following:
• create a new building, or change the use or appearance of an existing building
• affect the sunlight, privacy or outlook for neighbouring properties
• affect the nearby area with noise disturbance, smell or fumes
• work on or around listed buildings or any conservation areas
• affect traffic volumes, road safety or access
• change the density of development in an area
• use significantly different materials or finishes from nearby properties
• have an effect on existing trees
What is building control?
Building control applies national statutory regulations to ensure the structural quality of any building work, in areas such as safety, public health, accessibility, and the materials used. Most substantial building projects (such as an extension, knocking down walls or converting a garage or loft) will need Building Regulations approval.
