can be invaluable in helping to navigate the inevitable friction and issues that almost any project presents.

At Zara Christie, we know your home is a reflection of your personality and lifestyle. Whether you have a clear idea of what you want or you need inspiration, our interior design team led by experienced interior designer, Zara Christie, will design your home interior to suit your style and taste.

What makes Chisholm Design different to other kitchen companies?

You envisage your dream home and we will help you create it. We will work with you to devise elegant, stylish, and functional living spaces that fulfil all your wants and wishes for your home to the highest standards.

We think it’s a blend of offering really personal service, coupled with exceptional cabinetry and all delivered for a very fair and competitive price. We don’t rely on high volume, instead preferring to take on a smaller number of clients who value the quality of what we offer. We are also small enough so that the team feels really invested in each project, but big enough to have the depth of experience and large network of contacts to help deliver truly unique and personal projects.

Tell us a bit about Chisholm Design.

Be it an intimate living room design or full interior decoration of your home, you can relax while we do all the heavy lifting and finesse those finishing touches, from furniture shopping to decorating. All you have to do is enjoy living in your dream home, we’ll take care of everything.

What type of projects get you most excited?

Ready for your vision to become a reality?

Jo started the business back in 2012, after helping a friend to design their kitchen. She’d always had a passion for art and interior design, which she combined to great effect with her engineering background. Rob joined her in the business a few years later and since then the business has continued to grow. We now have an experienced team of designers, project managers, fitters and administrators, designing and fitting everything from cosy cottage kitchens to stunning new-build homes and gorgeous extensions and refurbishments.

Why should people appoint a kitchen designer instead of managing their own project?

We feel this comes down to experience, relationships (with contractors, suppliers and so on), budget and time. Most of these are selfexplanatory: if you have plenty of experience with this kind of project or if you have sufficient time to devote to managing it, then you might be fine doing it yourself. But if you are short of either of these, then you could probably use some help. The two other elements are often not appreciated or misunderstood. People often assume that paying a third party to manage a project is costly, but it’s usually only a relatively small proportion of the overall cost and should reduce the stress involved as well as saving time and money by reducing the likelihood of mistakes. And we can’t emphasise enough the importance of having good relationships, which

Anything where the client is looking for something a little different and that presents something of a design challenge. It might be a small extension that needs creative thinking to incorporate all the elements that a client is looking for, or it might be a larger project involving multiple rooms. We love it when we can work with the client and their architect to help to shape the overall layout of a home, using our experience and knowledge to help find the best solution for the client.

In developing a style for a client’s property who takes the lead or is it a collaborative effort?

This is almost inevitably a collaborative effort, not only between client and designer, but also the architects, the builder, suppliers and the tradesmen who are also working on the project. Designing on paper is one thing, but the secret is in working together with all these people to bring it all to life.

TRANSFORM YOUR HOUSE INTO YOUR DREAM HOME

Is there a project that you have found most rewarding?

At Zara Christie we bring only the highest standards of luxury into your home, that’s why we source the finest quality and use only trusted, high-end suppliers to implement our interior design services.

It’s hard to choose, but we recently completed the fitting of a kitchen and five other rooms in a stunning new-build just outside Farnham. It was a real privilege to be involved with such lovely clients, an amazing architect, a fantastic builder and his exceptional trades – it wasn’t without its challenges, but it was a wonderful feeling to be part of a team in which everyone was dedicated to delivering exceptional quality.

Your vision for your outdoor setting is as important as your interior. It’s where you’ll enjoy summer evenings dining alfresco and entertaining your guests. It’s where you’ll steal a moment of thoughtful calm and tranquility, and enjoy a touch of serenity.

“A big WELCOME and enjoy”

The old English market town of Farnham sprung up around its 12th century castle, which overlooks the town to this day lending an air of history and heritage. The town was prosperous in the 17th century due to its flourishing wool industry and wheat market. A plaque commemorates the 1648 stay of King Charles I at Vernon House, now the town’s library, on his way to trial and execution in London.

Local buildings of note include the parish church of St Andrew’s and the imposing Farnham Castle, both of which date from the 12th Century. A little bit of history

Farnham expanded rapidly after the arrival of the railway in 1848 and has been serving commuters to the capital ever since.

The varied range of well-preserved period architecture in Farnham reflects the town’s history and its narrow streets are lined with some of the finest Georgian architecture in the South of England. The town offers everything from new build apartments to terraced cottages to striking townhouses and mansions, so there is truly something to suit all tastes whether buying or renting.

Why move to Farnham?

With a wide range of shops, eateries and property available, the town has something for everyone, from families to the student population.

Farnham offers a welcome respite for those looking to escape the hectic pace of London living,

who will enjoy the quaint cobbled streets and the abundance of countryside on their doorstep.

Farnham has many local shops to explore, including upscale clothing boutiques such as the White Stuff, Mint Velvet and Oliver Bonas. You

can find almost anything at Elphicks department store, which also has a coffee bar should you need a break from browsing. The town also has a library, post office, banks and supermarkets, with a more extensive range of amenities to be found in nearby Guildford.

Ideal living

Farnham Park, a medieval deer park with green flag status, is a stone’s throw from the centre of town and offers a range of facilities, including an adventure playground, 9 hole golf course with a café, cricket club and sports pitches. The nearby Frensham Ponds offer a unique swimming spot for families to enjoy, while the Sculpture Park at Churt is set in a 10-acre arboretum with pleasant walking trails and stunning artworks on display. With the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the east and the South Downs National Park to the south, residents of Farnham are spoilt for choice when it comes to glorious countryside with walking and cycling routes to suit all abilities.

Farnham has a great reputation for high quality schooling in both the state and independent sectors, catering for all age groups and producing superb results. Those in and around the town include Highfield South Farnham School, South Farnham Infant and Junior Schools, Folly Hill Infant, Farnham Heath End, Weydon School and All Hallows Catholic School, as well as The Abbey School and Ridgeway

Community School, both excellent establishments for children with learning difficulties. The town is also home to a campus of the University for the Creative Arts, offering courses in such diverse subjects as performing arts and business studies.

Farnham enjoys strong road and rail links to the capital, making it a popular choice for commuters. The mainline train station has regular services to London Waterloo in less than an hour.

Planning & Building Control

Unsure which services you need?

If you are thinking of making changes to your property, you may need to apply for planning permission and / or Building Regulations approval. If you’re not sure which applications to make, please use the guidance below to help you to decide what you need to do.

Please note that many developments will require both.

What is planning?

Planning is the process of deciding whether a proposed development should go ahead or not. It uses national and local policies to consider the development in its context and may look at the impact of the work on neighbours and the wider community, existing architecture, the land, the layout, and existing or proposed infrastructure (such as drains, transport and schools).

You will probably need planning permission if your proposed development will do any of the following:

• create a new building, or change the use or appearance of an existing building

• affect the sunlight, privacy or outlook for neighbouring properties

• affect the nearby area with noise disturbance, smell or fumes

• work on or around listed buildings or any conservation areas

• affect traffic volumes, road safety or access

• change the density of development in an area

• use significantly different materials or finishes from nearby properties

• have an effect on existing trees

What is building control?

Building control applies national statutory regulations to ensure the structural quality of any building work, in areas such as safety, public health, accessibility, and the materials used. Most substantial building projects (such as an extension, knocking down walls or converting a garage or loft) will need Building Regulations approval.
