Godalming has existed since Saxon times, and grew in size over the centuries probably due to its location almost equidistant between Portsmouth, an important trading port, and the capital. Markets have been held in the town since the 1300s, with its main industry being woollen cloth and later knitting, weaving and leatherwork. At a point in the 19th century, Godalming was so successful it grew larger than Guildford. The town enjoyed worldwide fame in 1881, when it became the first town in the world to have its own public electricity installed, powered by a water mill on the river Wey. Godalming’s eclectic town centre has more than 130 listed buildings, which range from timber-framed Tudor structures to 17th-century brickwork. One of the town’s most prominent buildings is the ‘Pepper pot’ former town hall, now a public function room. There are a number of terraces of Victorian properties within the town centre and just to the south, and newer developments to the east and within the popular Busbridge area, which attracts families.

Interview with ‘M.o.a.t Construction’ Tell us a little about the background of your firm. M.o.a.t Construction was formed in 2015 with the aim of providing clients with a professional Main Contractor service in Surrey and Sussex. After working in the sector for eight years prior, I could see a need for a Main Contracting service that takes care of projects for private clients on a turnkey basis. By fully costing clients projects using our Quantity Surveyors, and the project construction plans. By also fully managing all the construction phase and delivering the project on time and within agreed budget, all whilst keeping to our high standards. For some when undertaking construction work it can end up being a headache, so we mitigate the hassle, by undertaking projects in a turnkey manor, managing the whole project for our client’s and bringing their dreams to reality. What type of projects have you been working on recently? A couple of our latest projects have been a full back to brick refurbishment on a 2000 SQ/FT house in Guildford. One of our projects was a property stuck in the 1930’s. Working with local architects, interior designers and our construction teams we delivered the project within 12 months for our clients. Transforming a dwelling stuck in a past era, into a great living space to be enjoyed for generations. Another project was a 1950SQ/FT property in the Surrey Hills. This property had been built in the 1920’s and had no insulation and the house needed extensive work to be brought up to the modern-day standard. Keeping the true character of the age of the property, we sympathetically up graded all interiors, Replaced the roof, fully insulated the floor, walls, roof, ceilings bring the property up to EPC rating of B. We then installed an air
source heat pump and fitted solar enabling the property to function off grid, helping the environmental sustainability of the property to decades into the future. Do you work with investors and Landlords? Yes, we have an arm of our company that works with accredited private investors to deliver developments. We deliver these projects by undertaking the construction phase as Main Contractor and we also have sweat equity built into the contract creating shared value for all parties involved. Making sure the development sticks to budget and time plan. If the client wishes, we can act as Principal designer delivering a full turnkey service. We are happy to look at any project if it hits our minimum contract value of £100k. Looking back is there a job that you are most proud of? I would say we don’t have a specific favourite. We get to work on some great properties in Surrey and Sussex with some fantastic clients. Every project has a lot of thought and care that goes into designing, planning and delivering which means every project is great to be a part of and to deliver for our clients. Being able to deliver people’s dreams is a great feeling. Are you happy to give appraisals to Hamptons clients before they exchange? All our projects are costed by our Chartered Quantity Surveyors which Todo so would require full construction drawings to be able to complete the job for contract standards. Although, so clients can get a feel for what costs could be, we would be more than happy talking through potential ideas and creating a ballpark cost per SQM based on previous similar projects completed within the last six months. This would help give any potential client a good feel for approximate costs.

Interview with ‘Architectural Services’ Tell us a little of the background of your Architectural practice? I started up my practice in 2010 when I moved out of London with my wife and then 6-month-old daughter. I wanted to provide a competitively priced service that also considered the buildability of the project as well as creating spaces that function well along with innovative design. We are a small team of 3 that consists of a Land and Measured Building Surveyor, Architectural Assistant plus myself. We work on predominantly residential projects ranging from internal remodelling and renovation through extensions, loft conversions and new build houses for private clients and developers. As a Father of 2 girls I have a good understanding of what families are looking for through first-hand experience. We handle the entire process and manage the planning and building regulations applications on behalf of our clients. Do you offer pre-exchange assessments to residential clients? Yes, we can work with clients to visit the property to offer advice on the scope and development potential of the property. If required, we can then put together feasibility sketches of a proposed scheme usually using Hampton’s floor plans as a starting point. We will research the local area and provide advice on what is likely
to be acceptable to the local authority based on local policy and previously approved projects in the area. We have worked closely with the local councils for more than 12 years, so we have a good understanding of local planning policy and what is likely to be granted permission. What are the most popular requests from residential clients? Better flow and light into the property as well as a social space for family and friends to gather, usually as part of a Kitchen / Dining / Family room. The Living space is usually the area which most clients are focused on along with additional bedrooms for a growing family. The most recent trend is for a dedicated home working area, whether this is attached to the property in a separate room or nook or as a multi-use outbuilding for work and play. We are also seeing a growing need for self-contained annexes whether for a dependant relative or Nanny / Au-pair. Is there a project you are most proud of? The projects that make us feel most proud are when a client comes back to us after the project has been completed to tell us how well the space works and how the small, seemingly insignificant details, made the biggest difference to how the space feels. It’s this feedback that gives us the greatest job satisfaction and pride.

Interview with ‘Transform Landsapes’ Tell us a little about the back story of ’Transform Landscapes’ Transform began life as a sole trade business formed by Simon Gray in the 1980s, becoming Ltd in 2001. The business is now run by a team of five directors, with Ben Clutterbuck as MD. Simon is still heavily involved in the business, leading on many landscaping matters with his wealth of experience. Currently, we have over 30 employees, with a client base spread throughout Surrey, Hampshire, and West Sussex. We are a completed garden service, covering design, build, and maintenance. We also have a fully qualified Arboriculture team, who offer services to private clients, as well as local councils. Our quality of work and excellent service are key corner stones to our business. We hold several industry recognised accreditations/ approved contractors’ statuses including BALI (The British Association of Landscape Industries), APL (Association of Professional Landscapers) and the Arboricultural Association. We are also recognised by TrustMark and Safe Contractor. Do you find most clients have a clear image of what they want to achieve in their outside space or do they sometimes look to you for inspiration? It is a mixed bag. Some clients have a clear image of what they want to achieve, whilst others rely on our knowledge and experience to provide an approach and way forward. Our in-house team offers both traditional hand drawn designs or modern Computer Aided Design (CAD) drawings and 3D modelling, which we find helps clients visualise the finished garden and feel more involved in the process. Our Design team and Project Manager work with the client throughout the project to ensure the brief is adhered to, and a beautiful garden is created. Equally, we have worked with clients who have a general idea but no detailed plan, so we use our experience, expertise, and knowledge to shape and install a finished landscape that is complementary to the location and fulfils the client’s budget and brief. Tell us about a project you’re particularly proud of? It is hard to highlight just one as we have had the privilege to be involved with many amazing projects, that each stands out for different reasons. Our Surrey Hill top garden, which was APL best in category 2022, or an infinity edged swimming pool built out of a slope in the garden, which has been shortlisted for two 2024 APL awards.
What are the most popular types of projects you are asked to undertake at the moment? We become involved in a huge range of projects, which is amazing. Our forte is complete garden build projects and, working with either our own designers or in collaboration with an independent Garden Designer or Landscape Architect, we can completely remodel a garden. These projects are extremely rewarding for us, not only as a business in using all our disciplines, but also for our workforce and, most importantly, our clients. We also manage smaller projects that address single elements in a garden such as fencing, terracing, lawns, or creating a planting area/improve planted borders. These are quick turnaround jobs, being great ‘little wins’ for us, and our clients really appreciate the transformative results. Please summarise why house buyers and developers should choose Transform Landscapes for their project? With a range of staff, we can support new house buyers with all elements of their garden. When a house is purchased, the buyers often only visit a few times often within a single season. We can help our clients understand what is in their garden and how they could use or improve the space. It might start with simply helping to manage the area;mowing, cutting back, trimming hedges. Alternatively, the space may not work for the new owners, and they may require a full garden design and build. Whatever the situation, we can help. For developers and those extending or re-developing the house there are many ways that a good landscaper can help complement building work. Our approach to hard landscape construction, is different to that of a builder. We are garden creators. We will look for ways to bring interest, structure, and shape to a garden, using plants and softer structures which often helps to keep costs lower than using only hard features. Where a builder or architect may suggest retaining walls, a structure they know and understand, we will look to use soil banks and planting to hide level changes and create interest. We understand the elements, soil, and outdoor drainage, in a way that builders may not have had the chance to learn. This allows our projects to withstand the weather and allow the user to enjoy their space all through the year.

Interview with Rachel Power What makes you different to other design practices? We approach all design from a practical perspective. We look at how people live their lives and not just the aesthetics of a room, focusing on the clients needs and how changes to their home can improve their day to day life. We do not dictate stylistic direction but through strong communication and creativity help to realise the ambitions our clients have for their homes. This collaborative approach extends across all avenues of the business ensuring that we draw on the expertise of our contractors, utilising knowledge and experience to provide the best results. Why should people appoint an interior designer instead of managing their own project? Engaging an interior designer has a number of advantages. Working with individuals who are professionally trained in their field enables you to make the best of your home. Our skills and talent mean we are able to realise the full potential of your property, making the best use of the space and creating beautiful schemes. These not only create a wonderful home but add value when considering future re-sale. Living in a well designed space can enhance your life and while aesthetics are important the practicalities of everyday life also need to be considered. At Rachel Power Design we work closely with our clients building a strong relationship and ensuring we fully understand their needs. We are passionate about great design and through our thorough development process ensure we make our clients vision a reality. We offer a full design and build service so can take you from concept to completion managing every stage of the design and build process saving you time, money and stress.
In developing a style for a client’s property who takes the lead or is it a collaborative effort? We have been described as approachable and user friendly in the past which sums us up really well. We do not dictate to our clients what they should be doing and do not force them down a particular design route. We work collaboratively recognising that we are there to make our clients dreams a reality. The approach we take varies from project to project and is very much dictated by the clients needs. When clients have a very clear vision of what they want to achieve we work within the brief, developing and enhancing the ideas which have been brought to us. In other cases we take the design lead helping clients recognise what style suits them, their lifestyle and everyday needs. People can feel overwhelmed when embarking on home renovations and we aim to guide them through this process building their confidence and enabling them to make good design decisions. In all cases the key for us is listening to our clients needs and understanding how they experience the space within their home. Never working to one particular style.
What type of projects get you most excited? One of the things I enjoy most about my job is working with different people and building relationships with my clients. In terms of properties I really love the challenge of working on houses which have become unloved and need a new lease of life. In many ways these houses are like a blank canvas with endless possibilities of what can be done. We can take a completely fresh approach to the design and are not constrained by existing details and finishes. Walls can be removed, spaces opened up and new rooms created allowing us to target all the specific needs of our clients.
Is there a project that you are most proud of? We have worked on so many beautiful properties over the years it is really hard to pick just one. We are always proud of what we achieve when we see the joy on our clients faces.. The most exciting projects are those which result in a complete transformation so if I had to pick just one it would be a fairly recent project. We were brought in to tackle a family home which required complete renovation after years of bad DIY and interesting design choices by previous owners. We made changes throughout the property creating a look and feel which suited the family and their busy life.

In the 1980s, the Museum was able to move to its present building - a 15th-century timberframed Wealden House, hiding behind a Georgian brick front. The building is the biggest artefact in a collection that now includes geology, archaeology, social history, art, oral history, and archives. The Museum’s Garden is a living exhibit, inspired by the designs of Gertrude Jekyll and Sir Edwin Lutyens. It complements displays of the artist, gardener, and craftswoman Gertrude Jekyll’s work in the Arts and Crafts gallery. 109a High St, Godalming GU7 1AQ. 01483 426510 www.godalmingmuseum.org.uk/ 27

If you are thinking of making changes to your property, you may need to apply for planning permission and / or Building Regulations approval.
