A little bit of history
“A big WELCOME and enjoy”
www.hamptons.co.uk
Tower Bridge is a world-famous icon of London’s cityscape, with fabulous turrets and a gothic appearance. It looks a lot older than its years, being built in the late Victorian era between 1886 and 1894. The bascules, which lift the bridge to allow for the passing of river traffic, are used around 1,000 times a year. The area around the bridge was mostly warehouses, now converted to offices and housing. Many of the buildings are named after the goods they used to store, such as Vanilla Court, Wheat Wharf, and other examples like tamarind, clove and cinnamon. The Tower Bridge area has property to cater to all tastes and requirements, ranging from stunning riverside warehouse conversions and new bespoke designer developments to family homes in Grade IIlisted Georgian squares. There are also some older style purpose-built blocks from the original Shad Thames scheme from the 1980s and 1990s.
7
Why move to Tower Bridge? Shad Thames is a charming, highly soughtafter historical location along the river Thames offering a variety of bars and restaurants; it’s also home to The Design Museum and within walking distance of The City. Rotherhithe is the little sister to Shad Thames and offers a winning combination 8
of both warehouse conversions and new build developments alongside the river. Bermondsey Street can be found ideally located between Shad Thames and London Bridge offering an eclectic mix of boutiques, restaurants, galleries and public houses, along with communal tennis courts and a local park for
residents. St Katharine’s Dock/Wapping is set alongside the Northern Banks of the River Thames, while Borough and The Southbank are lively and vibrant areas that are home to the renowned Borough Market and Tate Modern. Where better to live than in the heart of London?

Ideal living
Despite being so central to London, Southwark is one of London’s greenest boroughs with over 130 open spaces. Southwark Park is the biggest and has a boating lake and gardens plus a café, while Burgess Park has a barbecue area plus paths for walking and cycling. The Leathermarket Gardens are named after the historic tanneries that were once sited here and have a children’s play area with a view of The Shard. www.hamptons.co.uk
The area is home to the famous Borough Market, where there are many stalls selling fresh produce, cheese, meat, fish and other delicacies. There’s also supermarket shopping locally including a Waitrose at St Katharine’s Docks, a Marks & Spencer Food Hall near Tower Bridge station and a Co-op on Butler’s Wharf. London is a shopping mecca, so there is excellent shopping to be found around the capital but locally there is a number of High Street stores and shopping centres. The area has many excellent restaurants including the famous Pont de la Tour, the many dining establishments of The Shard with their magnificent views over the skyline, plus the many wine bars and pubs of St Katharine’s Marina. Waterloo lies in the heart of Southbank boasting a wealth of amenities including The London Eye, The National Theatre and London Aquarium, with Covent Garden just across the river. www.hamptons.co.uk

The Mayflower Pub In July 1620, the Mayflower ship took on board 65 passengers from its London homeport of Rotherhithe on the River Thames. Rumour has it that Captain Christopher Jones cunningly moored here to avoid paying taxes further down the river. The Mayflower journeyed onwards to Southampton for supplies and to rendezvous with the Speedwell but after many delays, false starts and a devastating leak, the Speedwell’s journey with The Mayflower was abandoned.
