orkBoat recognized the 10 Significant Boats of 2018 and named its Boat of the Year at an awards ceremony at the International WorkBoat Show Thursday morning. The 2018 Boat of the Year was the Enhydra, a 600-passenger hybrid tour vessel built by All American Marine for Red and White Fleet. Designed by Teknicraft Design, the Enhydra is BAE System’s third and largest boat to be powered with its hybrid system, called HybriDrive. “The system is fully automated, it assesses the power loads, both hotel loads and propulsion loads, and completely manages the use of available power,” said Joe Hudspeth, BAE’s marine marketing manager. “It draws upon the batteries as much as possible until it needs additional power from the diesel generators.” BAE’s variable-speed generators also serve as starting motors for the two Cummins QSL9 diesel engines, rated at 410-hp each and operated with biofuel.
ffshore wind energy development is moving apace in the Northeast and the Gulf of Mexico can be a source of boats and skills for the new industry. Despite early doubts about the Trump administration’s attitude toward wind power, “we are seeing absolutely no slowdown,” but a move to streamline the permitting process, said Ross Tyler, executive vice president and co-founder of the Business Network for Offshore Wind. Tyler spoke Thursday at the International WorkBoat Show in New Orleans, the same day that wind developer Equinor announced it will move ahead with plans for a its Boardwalk Wind project on a federal lease off New Jersey. The nation’s first commercial offshore wind array, built by Deepwater Wind at Block Island, R.I., used foundations
from Gulf Island Fabrication, Houma, La., and liftboats from Montco Offshore, Galliano, La., for installation. “What we would like to see is more of the expertise held here move to this market,” said Tyler, whose group includes U.S. industrial suppliers who could help develop the wind industry. “There’s a market there and we can be a conduit.” Offshore wind could be one market for the Gulf of Mexico’s stacked OSV fleet, said Wei Huang, director of global offshore for the American Bureau of Shipping. — Kirk Moore

labama and Louisiana-based shipbuilder Metal Shark is showcasing an array of new products and cutting edge technology at this year’s International WorkBoat Show. “With the exponential growth of our company, capabilities and technology, we found ourselves with an abundance of genuinely newsworthy product to highlight at this show,” said Metal Shark’s vice president of marketing, Josh Stickles. The company’s booth in Hall E is immediately identifiable thanks to a pair of distinctive and attention-getting patrol boats. Metal Shark has chosen this year’s WorkBoat Show to provide the public with it’s first look at the U.S. Navy’s newest patrol boat, the imposing “40 PB.” “In 2016, the Navy’s PBX Industry Day was one of most talked-about events of the WorkBoat Show,” said Stickles. “At last year’s show, the award of the contract to Metal Shark had just been announced. Today, a year later, we’re debuting Hull 001 right here at this same venue. This is the first showing of our new Defiant ‘X’
platform. It is chiseled, angular, and impossible to miss.” On the technolgy front, Metal Shark has brought a distinctive yellow and black autonomous 32' Defiant-class pilothouse vessel equipped with the new “Sharktech” autonomous technology. “We’ve received a tremendous amount of interest in our autonomous capabilities since the July debut of our Sharktechequipped 38-foot Defiant at MACC,” said Stickles. “This is a different boat with the same capabilities, but to make it even more noteworthy we’ve equipped it with the new Cox 300-horsepower diesel outboards.” Visit Metal Shark in booth 3381.

LEADING THE FUTURE
he use of synthetic rope is increasing in the maritime industry, replacing traditional steel lines for a range of applications. Vessel crews are putting these man-made ropes to the test on tugs and workboats, with many examples from harbors around the world, including on the U.S. Pacific coas. Modern harbor operations are fastpaced, with more than 125 container ships docking in Seattle each month, representing a 15.6% increase in the volume of cargo entering the port compared with a year ago. Cortland’s high-performance synthetics must stand up to the test of a varied workload and are always designed to perform as equal to or better than steel. As a global ropes and accessories specialist, we have been working closely with tug and barge operator Foss Maritime. Our Plasma lines are on board the largest tanker escorts in the fleet, the Lindsey Foss and the Garth Foss. These ropes are used for daily tugboat operations, crew training and emergency response. The lines are strong, yet light enough to float, and can be maneuvered with greater ease than steel. This increases safety by lowering manpower requirements per job and reducing the need for additional handling equipment. Plasma lines are manufactured to a patented design using an advanced highmodulus polyethylene (HMPE) fiber construction. This has better internal abrasion resistance when compared to alternatives, meaning it can safely withstand operations in the harshest environments. ABS releases guide on the lay-up and reactivation of OSVs
Duramax Marine sees major market acceptance of the DryMax seal

T
ffshore market conditions remain challenging in the near term, but there are positive signs from vessel reactivations. A total of 266 OSVs were reactivated in the first eight months of 2018, with 54% of OSVs reactivated less than 10 years old, according to the American Bureau of Shipping. That leaves around 28% of the global OSV fleet in lay-up and 12% idle. The decision on whether to reactivate laid up vessels can be difficult for owners and operators. There are a wide variety of OSV configurations. Many, however, have complex equipment such as dynamic positioning systems which can lead to potential reactivation challenges. Structural problems such as hull corrosion and the need to replace failing parts and equipment are frequently an issue. Less visible problems are compatibility of outdated software and cybersecurity vulnerabilities. To assist operators, ABS released the
“Guide for the Lay-Up and Reactivation of Offshore Support Vessels.” The guidance helps owners and operators navigate lay-up procedures and outlines the requirements for vessels returning to service. ABS classes roughly one-third of all OSVs including North America’s first LNG-fueled OSV fleet. The DryMax Seal was launched at the WorkBoat Show in 2016, and since then it has gained major market acceptance, now running on over 200 commercial vessels. One successful arena for the DryMax seal has been in the inland river towboat market. According to Duramax Sales Manager Tracy Pearman, “Our new seal works exceptionally well in the brownwater environment. We recently replaced two sealing rings in a towboat that had been in operation more than two years showing very little wear.” Duramax engineers found almost no wear on the rubber sealing rings and only minor wear on the DuraChrome mating ring. With only a slight resurfacing of about .010" on the mating ring and a new rubber sealing ring the boat was ready to go back in the water. Pearman noted, “The customer chose
to replace the sealing elements however they could have easily been placed back into service.” On the heels of the successes with the DryMax stern tube seal, Duramax Marine has introduced an extension to the product line — The DryMax Rudder Sealing System. Both the DryMax stern tube seal and rudder seal have full ABS and Lloyd’s type approvals. For more information see Duramax Marine at the WorkBoat Show Booth #1901 or visit www.DuramaxMarine.com.
