NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS that will land you a job in

2015

If you’ll be searching for a job in 2015, don’t just apply the same old tired job search advice about expanding your network, improving your social media presence and cleaning up your resume. Those things matter, of course, but they’re hardly revolutionary. Instead, here are six New Year’s resolutions to truly kick off your search from a position of strength:

1. Go for quality over quantity in your job applications. You might be tempted to apply to as many jobs as possible, figuring that doing so will increase your odds of being called for an interview. But in practice, this usually means that you’ll end up “résumé-blasting” -sending out tons of applications without customizing your résumé and cover letter to the particular openings you’re applying for. Employers can tell when you’re submitting the same generic application you’ve submitted to dozens of other places, and you have a far lower chance of catching their eyes. Send out fewer applications, and spend time customizing each. Write cover letters that are specific to each job you’re applying for, and ensure that your résumé highlights speak directly to the qualifications being sought. If your application package is identical every time you send it out, that’s a sign that you need to be more targeted in your approach.

2. Reach out to past managers and co-workers who loved your work. Strangely, when people think about their networks, they often think about family and friends but not the people in the best position to vouch for their work: past colleagues. If you haven’t recently reached out to past managers and co-workers who thought highly of you, now is the time. Get back in touch, let them know you’re searching and ask for leads, advice, connections or whatever else might be useful. After all, they’re the people best positioned to champion your work.

3. Write better cover letters. If you’re like most job seekers, your cover letter is, well, bland and pretty boring. It likely doesn’t do much more than summarize the experience that’s already listed on your résumé. Using a whole page of your application to merely repeat the contents of the other pages is doing yourself a serious disservice.

15 Career Mistakes to Avoid in 2015 Expert advice for stepping up your game at the office, online and while job searching. by Jada A. Graves

by Alison Green

Your cover letter should add new information to your candidacy, such as personal traits, work habits and why you’re genuinely interested in the job. And importantly, it should be heavily customized to the particular opening you’re applying for. Don’t send the same letter for each job you apply for.

4. Learn from past mistakes. Effectively job searching isn’t just about getting a job offer; it’s about identifying jobs where you’ll excel and be happy and avoiding the ones where you won’t. If you’ve ended up in jobs that weren’t quite right for you in the past, there were probably signs you overlooked during the hiring process. Avoid making similar mistakes in the future by reflecting on what red flags you ignored in the past -such as an unpleasant interviewer or a culture that didn’t feel like a fit -- and vowing to heed warning signs this time around.

5. Stop agonizing about when or whether you’ll hear back from an employer. One of the worst parts of job hunting is sitting around and wondering when you’ll hear back from an employer after you interview or submit an application, and trying to read into every tiny sign from an employer. Do yourself a favor, and vow to move on mentally after applying or interviewing. Tell yourself you didn’t get the job so that you’re not sitting around agonizing about why you haven’t heard anything, and let it be a pleasant surprise if they do contact you. This approach won’t hurt your chances, and it will make you a whole lot happier in the meantime.

6. Help another job seeker. If you spot a job opening that looks perfect for a friend, pass it along. Or if you have a talented contact who’s applying at a company where you know the hiring manager, reach out and put in a good word. Finding ways to help other job seekers isn’t just a kind thing to do; it'll also make you feel good, pay forward any help you’ve received yourself and -- here's the selfinterested part -- put you front and center on the radar screen of people in your network, which can only help in the long-run.

Sometimes the best way to start doing something right is to stop doing something wrong. Careerwise, this particularly rings true. Witness a professional sea change after you remove these 15 mistakes from your repertoire. Applying for any and every job. Unemployment can feel desperate, but you must still be conservative during a job search. Don’t submit job applications and résumés for postings for which you’re not qualified, says Dan Schawbel, career expert and author of “Promote Yourself: The New Rules for Career Success.” For one, “You won’t have any positive results, because employers are looking for a perfect match.” And on the off-chance you do get the job, you might find yourself overwhelmed to fill a role for which you’re ill-suited. Having a flimsy social-media presence. If you can't be found online at all – or if Googling your name leads a recruiter or employer down a NSFW rabbit hole – you’re sending the wrong message. Safeguard your Twitter feed and Facebook timeline. “Before you post a comment online, think: Is it stupid, thoughtless and insensitive? How will this affect my company? How could this be interpreted by someone who doesn’t know me?” says Andrea Kay, an author, career consultant, syndicated columnist and speaker. “And remember that anything you write – emails included – can be easily forwarded and read by someone you may not have intended to read them.” Ignoring your LinkedIn account. Revive your rusty LinkedIn account, not to mention your rusty career. This isn’t just a useful website when you’re job searching. LinkedIn is also critical for documenting your accomplishments, networking with current and prospective business contacts and staying up to speed on industry trends. (continued on Page 7)

THE BEST CAREER ADVICE FOR EVERY DECADE OF YOUR LIFE by Catherine Conlan, Monster Contributing Writer

Plenty of core career advice is applicable throughout your working life, but other advice is more time-sensitive and only works at certain times in your career. Here is the best career advice for every decade of your life.

TEENS Go for variety. “To find a career later that you enjoy, be certain to try out as many different careers as you can,” says Carole Stovall, president and CEO of SLSGlobal. Look for summer jobs, after school work, summer programs and internships. Todd Cherches of BigBlueGumball agrees. “Don’t be afraid to try or to fail. That’s what these years are meant for. Don’t feel that any job is beneath you, because it’s not. At this stage of your life, everything is a learning experience.”

20’s

Now is the time to find a job in the field where you’d like to pursue a career. “There are many things to consider, but the most important issues is to 22015jp42_ARTICLE_HIEG:132005jn55_SFH_HNA 1/12/15 5:23 PM Page 1 consider a job that you actually like, whether it is in your major or not,” Stovall says. It’s also a good idea to start establishing your individuality. “Stop comparing yourself to your friends, especially the ones you went to college with,” says Christine Sirois, a freelance journalist in her 20’s. “Once you’re in the job market, it’s not a level playing field and comparing yourself to your friends is

a recipe for feeling inadequate and unhappy. Instead, set goals and work at your own pace to achieve them.”

30’s At this point, you’re hitting your stride, but you should remain flexible in case something new and interesting comes up, Cherches says. “You want to be working at what you are good at and what you like to do, and setting yourself up for success, while still allowing for opportunities to take risks and to grow.” Being assertive can help set yourself up for that success, says Jill Ivey, senior associate at WIT Strategy. “Be clear about what you’re looking to get out of your position. If it’s not a good fit, look at other options. Don’t stay in a job that you hate, or that isn’t fulfilling, or where there’s no room for advancement because you’re afraid of change.” Alisha Karabinus, lecturer in rhetoric and composition at Purdue University, says your 30s are the time to ask for things and make a clear case for why you should get what you want. “Are you valuable? Are you essential? Stop grousing and make a case for a raise or a bonus. Be ready with a clear case and quantifiable deliverables if applicable.”

40’s This is the time you should establish yourself as an expert, says Peter Engler of Engler Career Group. “Develop a career and a resume that few can (continued on Page 17)

10 WAYS TO PERFECT YOUR PERSONAL BRAND CREATE A POLISHED AND PROFESSIONAL ONLINE PRESENCE.

Personal branding isn’t anything mysterious. A lot of it has to do with making sure employers, recruiters, professional contacts and just about everyone knows what you’re good at and what you care about. And you’ve got the perfect space to show what those things are: the Internet. Fine-tune your professional image with the following steps.

website is really powerful because it allows you to set the stage for what you want people to think about you, and you have 100 percent control of it,” Neher says. “And it will likely show up at the top of search engine results.” She says sites like GoDaddy make it relatively easy and cheap to buy a domain and build a site.

Start by Googling your name. What’s in a name search? Krista Neher, CEO of Boot Camp Digital, a social media training company, puts it like this: “Google results are now going to be your first impression, so you should treat them that way.” Ideally, a vanity search would 4:07 PM Page 1 yield several websites and pages that show you the way you want to be perceived. If not, try the next few tips.

Clean up your dirt – or at least push it to the second Google results page. Say your Google search yields an unflattering local news article. “If you have strong and active social networks and a personal website that other people go to, over time, those should outrank most news stories,” Neher says. She points out that Google often lists 10 websites on its first page of search results, so push the cringe-worthy article to page No. 2 by creating and actively updating several sites or social media accounts.

Create a personal website. “Even if you don’t have much to say, a personal

(continued from Page 9) Write book reviews on Amazon. One type of page that may elbow out unflattering articles is an Amazon page that shows customer reviews you’ve written, Neher says. “If I wanted people to think I’m passionate about social media, presumably, I’ve read some social media books,” she says. “So I would go on and leave reviews for all those.” Tweet your #personalbrand. Twitter can also help show others what you’re about. Plus, it’s an easy way to get your face in front of potential employers. “Engage with company leaders or recruiters on Twitter to learn more about open opportunities and develop relationships,” tweeted Kimberley Kasper, chief marketing officer of Jobvite, in a U.S. News Careers Twitter chat. Just remember to keep your comments PG and PC. Tweets can be deleted, but screenshots live forever. Create a Google Plus page. “Google Plus (owned by Google!) is the perfect tool to use to tell Google what you want it to know,” tweeted online job search expert Susan Joyce in the Twitter chat. Career coach Phyllis Mufson agrees. In an article about building your

10 WAYSTO PERFECT YOUR PERSONAL BRAND online presence, she suggests starting the quick process by simply transferring your LinkedIn information to your Google Plus account. Make a killer LinkedIn profile. More than 90 percent of recruiters find and contact job candidates through LinkedIn, so make sure your profile impresses them. Add a professional-looking photo, and fill out every section you can, Neher says, pointing out that the site now offers sections for volunteer experience, academic courses and more. Jenny Foss, founder of the career blog JobJenny.com, mentioned in the Twitter chat that you should also add “a compelling headline that uses both key words and draws the reader in.” Make new LinkedIn connections (with grace). When connecting with someone you don’t really know – a contact with whom you briefly spoke a few months ago, an industry peer, say – don’t send the default, “I’d like to connect with you” message, Neher says. “Let them know why you want to connect with them,” she says. “People are much more likely to say ‘yes’ to that.” Another nono? Asking for something, such as a job or sale, upon first messaging a new contact.

Actively post on LinkedIn. Show your interest in the industry by sharing articles, writing status updates and taking advantage of LinkedIn Publisher, which allows for longer-form posts, Neher says. “I would much rather hire someone who shows some kind of passion and interest in the industry than someone who doesn’t,” she adds. She suggests participating in LinkedIn groups specific to your field, too. Keep your brand consistent. Personal websites, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google Plus and Amazon are just the beginning. As you create more online personas, be sure to keep them consistent and up to date. Don’t be “Billy” on Twitter and “William” everywhere else, for example, and make sure your work history on LinkedIn aligns with what you listed on Google Plus. These sites should create a strong brand, not a confusing one. “The more things you create about yourself online, the more you’re controlling your own message,” Neher says.

THE BEST CAREER ADVICE FOR EVERY DECADE OF YOUR LIFE

(continued from Page 7)

duplicate so that you stand out from the crowd. Build your network and find a good mentor who can provide sage advice.” Cori Tyler works in law enforcement and uses his expertise to run his own business, Last Line Defense Training. His career advice for those in their 40s: “Know the difference between a job and a career, and decide what priority it truly has in your life.” In addition, don’t let your work or career define who you are: “Those come to an end, sooner or later.”

50’s Despite your expertise, it’s important to keep learning at this stage, Cherches says. Technology and the marketplace change so quickly that you’ll need to make an effort to stay current. “Your strength lies in combining your years of experience with your ability and willingness to stay ahead of the curve. You

may also be thinking about what you want your ‘leadership legacy’ to be.” Artist Ann Klefstad says to look beyond regular jobs. “What has worked for me is to take the skills I have and work like the devil to create opportunities to use them, freelancing or consulting.” She recommends increasing the amount of your involvement with things you have affinity for and actively work to meet people involved with them.

60’s and beyond At this age, you can market yourself as a sage, but stay humble enough to learn from those younger than you, Cherches says. “You want to be a mentor, and yet be willing to be mentored. With that combination of attributes, you will have much to contribute and be much in demand.”
