10 TIPS For The
article by Alison Doyle | about.com
Passive Job Seeker
Do you love your job? Don’t want to even think about looking for a new position? Even if you’re lucky enough to have a job you wouldn’t ever consider quitting, you should be prepared to move on. There are also reasons that it can make sense to quit a job you love. Companies reorganize or need to lay-off workers for financial reasons, management changes, you could get a new boss who isn’t as great to work for as your old supervisor, or your personal circumstances could change and you may need to seek employment. What is passive job searching? A passive job search occurs when someone who is currently employed is open to hearing about new career opportunities, but does not actively seek out and apply to specific positions. In passive job searching, the employed worker waits for employers to contact him rather than searching and applying for jobs like an active job seeker. It’s a good model to follow because you will be prepared to job hunt at any given moment. If circumstances are such that it’s time to job
search, it’s quick and easy to turn a passive job search into an active job search and you’ll be good to go. ! Passive job seekers may (and should) keep their résumé and LinkedIn profile updated and may engage in casual networking with colleagues and friends at other companies.
Passive job seekers may also set up job alerts on job boards and set up accounts on job search websites and social media such as LinkedIn, Google+ and Twitter.
!
Why it’s important to be prepared to job search That’s why it's important to always be prepared to job hunt, even if you don’t have to today. It’s much easier to have everything you need ready to job search, to check out what jobs are available in your career field and preferred location and to know what those jobs are paying than it is to have to scramble to start a job search from scratch on a moment’s notice. Top 10 tips for passive job seekers Passive job seekers who invest a little time in staying job search ready will save a lot of time (and
stress) getting up to speed when they need to job search. Here are my top 10 tips for passive job seekers. 1. Be an active LinkedIn user. Build a robust LinkedIn Profile including education, experience, volunteering, skills, certifications and associations, etc. Your LinkedIn Profile is the online version of your résumé, so be sure to proofread it carefully. Once your profile is set, connect with everyone you know. The oper ative word is “know” - don't connect with random people because they aren’t going to be in a position to help you. Join relevant LinkedIn Groups. There are job search groups, company groups, alumni groups, college groups, and networking groups. The Groups are good sources of networking contacts, job search advice, and job listings. Since you’re not actively job searching, set the email notifications for each Group to a weekly digest so you aren’t buried in messages. ( article continued on Page 7 )

10 tips for the passive job seeker
2. Write recommendations. Giving to get works every time. Write LinkedIn recommendations for some of your connections. In return, you’ll get a recommendation back from at least some of the people you provide a reference for. Those recommendations show on your profile and they are a reference in advance to a potential employer. 3. Tap into social networking. Don’t stop with LinkedIn. The days when Facebook was only used for personal networking are gone. Set up Twitter and Google+ accounts, as well, and use them to expand your base of connections. The stronger your social presence, the more likely you are to be tapped by companies using social recruiting to find candidates for employment. 4. Build a career network. You don’t have to spend a lot of time networking, but do take the time to add connections to your network on a regular basis. The bigger your network, the more opportunities you'll have when you’re job searching. 5. Stay connected to your network. Don’t build a network and forget about it. It’s important for your connections to know you are there. Post status updates on Facebook, tweet now and then, post interesting links to your social networking pages. If you have a blog that’s appropriate for professional connections to read, feed it to your social networking pages. That way
your pages will be current without you having to do much work. Once a week, email or send a LinkedIn or Facebook message to five connections to ask how they are doing. Staying in touch reminds your connections of who you are and shows that you care about how they are doing. If you’re interested and engaged, your contacts will be more likely to give you help if and when you need it. With the connections you are friendly enough with to meet in-person, have a cup or coffee or lunch once in a while. 6. Check out companies. Do you have a company you would love to work for if the perfect job came along? It’s always a good idea to have a list of companies you’d like to work for. Have a list of target companies ready and check out the company website every once in a while to read the latest news and check out what jobs are available. 7. Check job listings. Once a week spend a few minutes using a job search engine to run a few job searches using your skills, job title and/or the location where you would like to work. You’ll see, at a glance, a list of open jobs that match your background. 8. Update your résumé. Have an updated résumé ready to go. Each time you change jobs or your educational status changes, update your résumé. This way, you’ll
always have a current copy of your résumé to use, if need be. Write a cover letter draft for a job that is a close match to your expertise. You’ll have a template ready to customize when you are ready to apply for jobs. 9. Be ‘interview ready.’ Don’t use up all your accrued vacation or personal leave time unless you have to. Keep some in reserve, so you have time to interview if an opportunity that’s too good to pass up comes along. Have an interview outfit ready to go to save time scrambling to find something to wear at the last minute. Also have a list of employment references ready. Some companies require references along with a résumé and cover letter as part of the application process. 10. Start over. Every few weeks go through these steps to make sure that your passive job search techniques are working. Is your LinkedIn networking growing? Are you remembering to reach out to your connections? Do you have a sense of what jobs you qualify for and what jobs are available? On a related note, are you skills and certifications current so you’re qualified for positions of interest? Are you ready to interview if you get an invitation from an employer? The more prepared you are to job search, in advance, the easier it will be to start a job hunt and find a new job fast if you need to. !

6 Skills that will Get You the Job
article by the Glassdoor Team glassdoor.com
While you may think coding, data analysis and accounting skills are the must-have ones in this technology driven era, they aren’t the only ones. There are also many “soft skills” that can help propel your career to the next level. From the ability to learn on your feet to tech know-how, here’s a look at the top skills recruiters and hiring managers are looking for out of their candidates. 1. The ability to learn fast Time is money and the longer a company has to spend training you, the more it is going to cost them. According to J.D. Conway, technical recruiter and talent acquisition partner at BambooHR, the ability to comprehensively see how your role fits into the company, and act efficiently matters a lot. “The faster you pick it up to make a full contribution, the faster you will be seen as an asset, rather than a liability,” he says. 2. Technology know-how gets you past the door Tech professionals will continue to be in demand through 2016. According to staffing firm Robert Half’s Salary Guides for 2016, tech employees will see a 5.3 percent increase in salary as companies look to hire application and database developers, business analysts, system and network engineers and help desk and desktop support professionals. While many of those jobs are going to require specific skills, there are also some soft technology skills applicants are going to need to have, including Windows 7 and virtualization skills. Even a support role is going to require a good understanding of technology including operating software, cloud and mobile applications.
3. Drive and adaptability There’s a reason “go-getter” is often listed in job ads: employers want workers who will go beyond their pay scale. Many companies looking for talent view you as an investment and want someone who has a drive to go beyond the status quo, says Conway. They also want employees who are adaptable and willing to change on the dime. In this fast-paced global economy, companies need to be nimble to respond the changes in the business environment and they need employees who can as well. “Your desire to become great at what you do—to learn, to grow—is an indicator as to how you will perform in any given position,” says Conway. 4. Financial skills Financial jobs have and will continue to be a strong area of job growth with Robert Half predicting finance and accounting salaries will see a 4.7 percent uptick this year. In-demand jobs in finance and accounting including accounting managers, business and financial analysts, internal auditors, accountants and payroll professionals. But just like with technology jobs, there are some skills employees are going to have to possess. According to Robert Half, those in-demand skills include advanced Excel skills, knowledge of business intelligence and enterprise resource planning software, and cloud based software experience, just to name a few. 5. Ability to communicate One of the knocks against technical degrees is that students don’t learn the soft skills like the ability to
communicate. But that skill is something that is necessary and sought after, even if you are going for a technical role. Without it you won’t be able to get your points across, collaborate efficiently or worse, fit into the company culture. All of which is why companies hold communication skills high up when it comes to screening candidates. “Almost everyone says they have them, but being actually adept in working and communicating with people is something that everyone will look for in the hiring process,” says Conway. “People want to work with people that communicate well.” 6. Screening of your own skills When looking for a job, candidates are placed under a microscope as the recruiter are hiring manager sifts through the résumés for the right candidates. Although it is the job seeker who gets screened, that doesn’t mean he or she can’t do some screening themselves. In fact Conway says the ability to screen potential employers is a skill everyone needs to possess when the job environment is doing well. “In an improving job market, employers are trying to up their game in competing for talent. This has positive ramifications, in that employers have to improve their perks, benefits, and management training, etc. in order to compete with other companies that are doing it better,” says Conway. “But instead of actually changing, some employers will just give a glossy impression of their company to outsiders. Do your research. Otherwise, you could find that you have left one bad situation only to land in hot water elsewhere.” !

Recent grads or soon-to-be graduating students face an exhilarating next chapter. Most already have planted career seeds along the university journey, learning practical skills through the classroom, internships, part-time jobs, volunteer activities and sports affiliations. Taking advantage of your already honed skills and abilities while also fanning the flame of passions helps to fuel a powerful résumé story. However, many graduates fall short when constructing their career vessel. Assumptions often weaken the opportunity to build a strong, interview-landing résumé that will outperform your competitor. Following are three assumptions you will want to avoid and how to circumvent them: Assumption #1: The “I don’t have any real experience” assumption. Thinking this way diminishes the real thought work and effort involved in articulating your meaningful value. Reality Most graduates have compiled enough experience and results to fill a small book. To hone that experience, you must first dissect your day-to-day. Start with your most recent year of school. Did you carry a full course load? How many hours? What was the most difficult class, and why? Did you perform group projects? Case studies? Did you work a part-time job (on- or off-campus) or an internship? What was your role? Did you perform in a customer-facing role? What did clients say
about your work and your service? Did you learn to use specific software applications? Which ones? Did you learn how to analyze problems better? What types of problems? How did you fix specific issues? Did you get a chance to manage people or projects? What was the outcome? Did you have to work fast and efficiently to meet deadlines at work while also juggling coursework and grades? How did you adapt to ensure you got everything done? What systems did you employ? What tasks were you complimented for? What did you do that made you feel empowered, and ‘in the zone?’ You get the drift? You’ve done a lot, and this is only the tip of the iceberg. Assumption #2: Your résumé should be squeezed onto a single page. Reality Some new graduate résumés are complete in one page; some require three pages. What matters is that the writing is succinct, focused and targeted, but also interesting. What this means is you have poured all of your achievements into a virtual vessel and let the cream rise – these are the accomplishments that most appeal to your target reader. You want to walk through y our accomplishments in mini-story format, showcasing not only the outcomes, but also the situation you faced, the actions you took – and even the hurdles you had to leap over – to achieve the result. This
requires words and résumé real estate, and sometimes spills over to a second, maybe even third page. Just because you have an accomplishment, however, doesn’t mean it should go onto your résumé, which bri ngs us to assumption #3: Assumption #3: Your résumé is about you. Reality Once you’ve skimmed the cream of your achievements, you’ll need to do more work, because you don’t simply want to dump ALL of your wonderful accomplishments onto the page. Instead, you must select and frame your stories around the needs of whomever you wish to attract. In other words, you will need to research what types of customers your ideal company serves or what kinds of products they produce or who their competitors are or what types of marketplace challenges they face. In what ways do they ache for someone like you to come in and help ease that pain? Now, you must craft your résumé stories in a way that says you have accomplished things using the skills they require to fix their problems. You must paint a picture of how your classroom work, team projects, part-time or summer jobs, campus affiliations, sororities and fraternities, service groups, individual initiatives and such are equivalent to the type of talent they need to solve problems, grow and add revenue to their bottom line. !
