6 SECRETS TO WRITING A GREAT COVER LETTER
article by Seth Porges | Forbes.com
At best, a cover letter can help a job-seeker stand out from the pack. At worst, it can make a promising candidate seem like an uncreative cut-and-paster. Sadly, the vast majority of cover letters read essentially the same: Retreads of resumes that ramble on while repeating the obvious. Would you read one of these to the end if it were put in front of you? Probably not, and nor would most hiring managers. Of course, the Internet is full of tips and tutorials on writing a cover letter, but few of them give much useful information other than the obvious (“Use good grammar!”). So I got to thinking about what cover letter tips and techniques have served me over the years. I came up with these six golden rules for writing a cover letter somebody will actually want to read.
applying to work in. My favorite pro tip: Google around for the history of your field or company, and sprinkle some cool historical facts into your cover letter (or even use one as a lead). If I was applying for a job in tech, I might talk about how thrilling it was to see Moore’s law transform technology before my eyes, and how thrilled I am to be a part of this transformation. If I were applying for a job in fashion, I might talk about how much fashion has changed since the 80s (a lot!). Everything has a hidden history. Use it to show expertise and interest.
1) Don’t repeat your resume
Sometimes, you don’t know exactly who you should be addressing your letter to. Nix the generic and bland “Dear Hiring Manager” or “To Whom It May Concern”. If you absolutely don’t know who you should be addressing, then don’t address anybody. Instead, just jump right into the body of the letter.
A lot of people write cover letters as if they were paragraphform resumes. Fact is, your letter will be stapled (or attached to the same email) as your actual resume, so you can assume that they’ll at least glance at it (and probably with a keener eye than your cover letter). Instead, use your cover letter to show personality, curiosity, and an interest in the field you are
2) Keep it short
Less. Is. More. Three paragraphs, tops. Half a page, tops. Skip lengthy exposition and jump right into something juicy.
3) Address Nobody

6 TIPS TO A GREAT COVER LETTER
4) Send it as a PDF
Not every office computer can read .docx or .pages files, but virtually everybody can open a PDF file without any conversion. File conversions are bad for two huge reasons. First, they are just as likely to not bother and move onto the next applicant. And, second, conversions can introduce formatting errors. Both are bad. (Note: This story originally suggested .doc files. Definitely better than .docx, but, as the comments pointed out, PDF is surely better. It can’t be easily tampered with, and you have more control over how it appears on somebody’s screen.)
5) Never ever, ever use the following phrase
“My name is ___, and I am applying for the position as ____”. They already know this, and you’ll sound inexperienced.
6) Close strong
Finish off by quickly (and I mean quickly) explaining how your experience or worldview will help you at the job. That’s key. That’s the closer. And it can be done in one to two seconds. If it goes any longer, you’re just rambling.

8 TIPS article by Lisa Quast | Forbes.com
TO DRESS FOR INTERVIEW SUCCESS
Struggling to decide on an outfit for your upcoming job interview? What you wear to an interview creates an image or perception of the type of person you are, so choosing your attire is critical to presenting yourself as the right candidate to hire.
How interview attire has shifted The dot-com era ushered in a more casual approach to workplace attire, including during interviews, in the past 1015 years. When the economic recession hit, job seekers began dressing up as a way to differentiate themselves from other candidates. The recession created a heightened awareness by hiring managers of what candidates wear to interviews. Interview attire is also often seen as a test of a candidate’s familiarity of the company and industry.
Tips to dress for positive impact • The appropriate interview attire depends on the industry in which you’ll be interviewing, as well as the geographic location and time of year. • Spend time on the Internet researching the company, industry and competitors to determine suitable interview outfits. • Still not sure? Call the company’s HR department and ask what they recommend you wear. • When in doubt, err on the side of being slightly over dressed, rather than show up looking too casual. • Don’t have an appropriate outfit? Go to a large department store like Nordstrom or Macy’s and ask for help from a personal shopper or hire a personal stylist. • Ensure that your clothes are cleaned and pressed. • Avoid wearing perfume or cologne. • Wear makeup and jewelry that are appropriate to the job/ company/industry.
Your clothes can influence your chances for landing a job If a man wore a dark suit to a job interview in California (or any warm climate) in August for a position as a construction worker, the hiring manager might think the man had lost his mind. Why? The attire is inappropriate not just for the position and industry, but also for the location and time of year. What if a woman wore a navy pant suit, pulled her hair into a low ponytail, wore little makeup, no jewelry and flat shoes to a job interview as a clothing stylist? It’s doubtful she would be offered the job. The hiring manager would probably be looking for someone who projects an image of creativity and wears clothing, makeup and accessories that are fashionforward. As the old saying goes: “Perception is reality.” Think about the image you want to project during your interview and then choose an outfit that will create a positive perception and is appropriate, given the time of year, your geographic location, and the job/company/industry.

CAREER GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT 1. Could your career development and management use help
to gain momentum? People who are the most successful and satisfied in their careers have proactively determined what they want from work. Once they’ve decided on their goals, they make a plan to accomplish the goals.
2. Developing a timeline with career goals and expected milestones is also an effective way to manage your career. Bringing your boss and his or her sponsorship and mentoring into the picture will ensure that you have an internal mentor who will help you manage your career. 3. Some companies have formal programs to help employees develop their careers. In others, you will need to informally pursue your career development. Companies with programs 18 HAWAII EMPLOYMENT GUIDE
generally focus energy on helping employees develop and follow a career path.
4. The career path is discussed at several meetings bi-annually with the employee’s boss. The company doesn’t own the career path; the employee does. But, the company demonstrates its deep commitment to its employees by assisting where possible with resources of time and dollars. 5. Career paths are recommended for the same reason that
goals are recommended. They are the written plan that can help each employee focus on what is most important to his or her fulfillment and success. Without a plan, you can feel rudderless and you have no benchmark against which you can measure your progress.
WHY YOU NEED TO
LOVE YOUR JOB article by Anna Kupka | Forbes.com
Loving ones job is not only a “rare-to-find-nice-to-have”, no, it is essential for our entire society and for our overall wellbeing. The workplace is the place where we spend most our waking time and people hating their jobs is throughout the world one of the main reasons for economic downturns. If we would all use our unique talents to serve humanity (and we all have these talents!), there would be no unemployment and no stress-related illnesses. I have heard of a woman who makes her living plucking eyebrows. Nothing else – just plucking eyebrows. Based in New York, she is such an amazing eyebrow-plucker that celebrities from around the world queue to avail of her services. If you can make a very good living by plucking eyebrows, you can make a living of anything! Or as Albert Schweitzer said: “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” Yesterday I was at a pedicure studio and while the lady in charge was poking around at my feet I thought how very little I envied her for her job. But then I watched the passion with which she filed, polished, scrubbed and painted and suddenly I understood that this passion was exactly the reason why I opted to spend a fair amount of money for my pedicure instead of doing it myself. I believe that as long as I have a disposable income I should outsource services to those whose core competency they are and who are better at them than I am – but better is not enough – they need to love what they do. I sense whether they love their job or whether I am just a duty to them that has to be endured. The moment I feel that someone is miserable doing their job, I feel bad to be
their customer. I try to get out of the situation and avoid the situation in the future - meaning in plain words that I can easily become a lost and therefore expensive costumer to a brand, solely because of the fact that I made one single negative experience with one of their staff. Training alone doesn’t help here. Two people can do exactly the same job and say exactly the same words – we still sense whether they are passionate about what they are doing and this makes all the difference. You might now argue that this is only true for customer-facing service providers but I think it is true for everyone. Be it backoffice or assembly-line, one single unmotivated team member is not only difficult to manage but can bring down the moral of an entire team. Miserable employees give others the feeling that what they are doing is unworthy, spreading a sense of embarrassment amongst those who try to be passionate. You owe loving your job to everyone – to your customers, suppliers, partners, to your family and most importantly: to yourself! No matter how difficult your upbringing was, we are all being given opportunities again and again to create our own destiny. Or do you really want to show your children that it’s ok to be unhappy at ones job; that a life is here to be wasted? It’s unlikely that this is the kind of role model you wish to be. Or do you want to encourage them to discover their unique talents, to be driven by passion, love and a sense of purpose? Sounds more like it. The same is true for relationships. It is not very attractive to be with someone who spends his time complaining about what he/she does for a living. Content on the other hand is highly attractive. So pick yourself up and remember: Love it, change it or leave it! HAWAII EMPLOYMENT GUIDE 19
