7 Steps

to a Better Career in the New Year article by Jacqui Barrett-Poindexter, MRW | glassdoor.com

There’s a lot of talk about revving up your career in the New Year. While reinvigorating goals in January is an exciting endeavor, problems arise when excitement wanes, and the real work of job search sets in.

crucial to your career change; 4. Join an industry association; 5. Volunteer for a stretch project at your current job that will set you up for success in a future role.

So, how you do keep the embers of enthusiasm burning over the long haul of career change? How do you perpetuate that invigorating New Year feeling while methodically and planfully executing your plan?

2. Schedule action steps in your calendar. Estimate timelines and plan out weeks, months and even a year or more. If you have multiple calendars; e.g., hand-written, electronic and/or whiteboard, then use all of these. The more you write something down, the more likely you remember it.

Following are some building block steps as well as ideas to help you stay focused and energized as you participate in your career change marathon. 1. Make a career change plan. This can begin as simple as brainstorming a few key steps to successfully move ahead in your career. For example: 1. Brainstorm what type of role, specifically, you wish to land; 2. Research target companies; 3. Revamp your résumé targeted to your new goal including the needs of your target companies; 3. Attain a new credential, pursue training or take a class in an area of growth

3. Write out the sub-steps of each action. For example, writing a résumé is not as simple as dumping a few achievements on a page and dressing up the formatting. Potential steps may include: investing in a recommended résumé book or writer, completing a résumé worksheet, reviewing your achievements against the needs of your target companies, and much more. Take time to strategize your résumé properly. As you build in sub-steps, you may need to tweak major action steps to ensure calendar fluidity.

4. Be accountable to someone other than yourself. Whether you hire a career coach or simply reach out to a colleague for ‘accountability partnership,’ deepening your commitment to your goals ensures there is someone to whom you report regular progress. This, in turns, ensures your goals don’t get buried by everything else. Moreover, the act of sharing and celebrating successes with your coach/partner helps fan the enthusiasm flames, and perpetuate momentum. 5. Start telling people about your goals. For example, if a conversation you are engaged in outside of work lends itself to sharing your future aspirations, then do so. Opening up your career dreams to interested others may feel vulnerable or premature depending upon where you are in the transition process; however, planting seeds now can be fruitful later. You never know when someone you’ve mentioned your goals to will encounter someone who needs your talent and therefore can make an introduction. So, it’s not just what you know, it’s also who you know and who they in turn know. ( article continued on Page 7 )

3 Steps to Define Your career

Mission Statement

article by Jacqui Barrett-Poindexter, MRW glassdoor.com

Do you have a personal mission statement, and have you melded it with your career? In other words, (borrowing from Dictionary.com), do you have “an important goal or purpose that is accompanied by strong conviction; a calling or vocation?” Vision statements often are described similarly. According to About.com, “Your personal vision statement guides your life and provides the direction necessary to chart the course of your days and the choices you make about your career. Your personal vision statement is the light shining in the darkness toward which you turn to find your way. It illuminates your way.” Whether you dub it as your mission or your vision, the bottom line is that having a calling, something that is a beacon of light guiding you when you get off course, is the primary purpose of creating such a statement. It is something by which you measure your day-to-day actions and decisions.

Your mission statement should focus on others (and not just your personal goals) More broadly defined, a mission focuses beyond a single specific outcome such as to “become president of a company” or to “own your own business.” Instead, it often weaves in elements of how what you do will fulfill customer needs, solve problems for your company, improve the community, or even improve the lives of your colleagues or staff. Now, with that done, you should consider how what you do makes you feel. In solving others’ problems, do you feel satisfaction? In providing job satisfaction to your employees, do you in turn receive a sense of pleasure? In other words, if you are providing a service or a solution that is missionoriented, but you are lackluster or even miserable in the process, then it may be time to tweak how you are achieving your mission. Your mission statement should be flexible Which brings us to the idea that your mission statement is fluid, evolving over time. And for

022016jp17 Job Quest 2016 - Article full page (9.7” x 10”)

many, if you don’t know where to start, you may be too overwhelmed to ever create one. There are many books, and hundreds of articles on the Internet to guide you. Getting started on your mission statement Probably the single best tip to just “get started” is to think about your special skills and abilities for a moment, and in particular, the ones that light your fire. What is your special sauce? Are you a compassionate listener with an ability to warm up even the most disgruntled client? Do you have a unique ability to crunch numbers? Are you a topperformer when it comes to selling widgets? Do you have event planning skills that leave even the most skeptical attendee wowed? Now, take that one trait you know people value you for and extend it into your mission. Simply, in one or two sentences, answer, “How will you use that talent to provide value to your company, your employees, your colleagues, your customers, your vendors and ALL whom you touch during a given business day?” n

5 Questions To Ask In A Job Interview

article by Heather Huhman | glassdoor.com

Job interviews aren’t only about impressing the interviewer; they’re about sparking a new relationship with your future employer. The key to a successful interview is to keep the interviewer talking. Sure, while you want to share why you’re the best candidate for the position, you also don’t want to dominate the interview. On the other hand, if it seems like there’s a lull in the conversation, you also want to keep the conversation going. Maintaining conversation during a job interview can be hard to do. Even if you write a list of five or 10 questions, the interviewer may not have much to say. As you prepare questions for the interviewer, make sure they’re relevant to the position. It’s also important to keep them interesting and open-ended. This will make it possible for the interviewer to talk more during the interviewer. If you’re stumped on what questions you should ask, here are five questions that will keep your interview going:

1. What do you enjoy most about working here? This is a great question to ask to learn more about the interviewer on a personal level. You’ll pick up on the interviewer’s feelings toward the job and give them the opportunity to talk about themselves during the interview. When asking this qu estion, you’ll also determine whether this job is the right fit for you. If the interviewer is hesitant about answering, it might be a sign they do not enjoy their job. 2. Where do you hope the company will be in five years? This is another question that has the potential to get the interviewer excited about their job. You’ll also learn about any upcoming changes the company might experience and the goals the interviewer has for their position within company. Learning this information will give you a better idea of how you’d fit as a potential employee. ( article continued on Page 15 )

Haven’t Landed a New Job Yet?

TRY THIS.

article by Heather Huhman | glassdoor.com

Searching for a job is intense — especially when you’ve been doing it for a solid six months. It’s easy to give up and drown your sorrows in Netflix episodes of Modern Family and a pint of Haagen-Dazs. And when you’re not glued to Netflix, you’re glued to your other mobile devices — anxiously awaiting any good news from hiring managers. In a 2014 Glassdoor survey, 59 percent of job seekers believed they had a better chance of being considered for a job if they applied as soon as the job was posted online. But is it really helpful to be glued to your mobile device all day? No. Because there are plenty of other activities that are considered work than just applying for jobs all day. If you let your résumé and skills ferment long enough, they won’t be as valuable anymore. Here are four ways job seekers can stay present in the workforce and in life — even if they haven’t landed a job just yet: Get certified. Take a class in something that may be of interest to hiring managers, could set you apart and make employers take notice of your résumé. Maybe you could accomplish your goal with more education or training, but you’re not in a position to go back to school at this point. The answer just might be earning a certification in your current field or a new one.

The job market is extremely competitive. Instead of explaining the six-month gap in your work history, it’s easier to explain you were expanding your education 2015bm60_MDX_HIEG.qxp_Employment Guide 12/18/15 9:33 AM Page 1 and taking classes during that time that contribute to the position for which you are applying. Attaining a certificate permits you to build skills and knowledge that can help you do your work better — and most hiring managers know that. Blog it out. Stay two steps ahead of hiring managers by creating your own

personal brand. Most often, they conduct online searches on job candidates before deciding whether to offer them interviews. Chances are, hiring managers will search your name on the web and look for evidence of involvement in business networks and community projects. Create a personal blog and write about topics that matter to employers. A personal blog is something done on your own time and shows your work ethic and willingness to go above and beyond. You could even include the link to your blog when applying for jobs. They want to find examples of success at work or internships, college or volunteer positions. Keep in mind any material on your blog should be professionally written and error free. Consider what special projects you have worked on in the past, and create a special tab for your portfolio. Use your body instead of your brain. Sometimes, clearing your head is the best way to get back on track during your job search journey. Instead of scouring job boards 24/7, try doing something you consider stress-relieving. It’s important to take care of your body as well as your mind and find inspiration in other ways. Find a nearby trail and go for a run to get some fresh air, or grab some friends and sign up for a fun group exercise class. These examples may seem very basic but are simple stress. Take a roadtrip. Visit a few places in your state where you’ve never been before and find your inspiration in other ways. It’s important to step back from your routine for a day and have some fun. Spend a day or two driving to a city and explore. What businesses are there? What do people do? Is there a museum? Give yourself a chance to learn something new. You never know where life will take you or who you will meet unexpectedly. n
