5 Ways to Get More Out of Linkedin

Article by Dan O’Halloran

You have your LinkedIn profile written up listing your work history, your goals and what you’re looking for next. You send connection requests with personalized messages (right??) and respond promptly to the ones you receive. So what else can you do to grow your network of connections and let everyone know you’re out there (without bothering them)? There are plenty of new site features you can take advantage of in your quest to advance your career.

1. Spice up your work history with images and video

You’ve listed your experience and cleverly worded your job responsibilities and achievements, but that’s just a big wall of text. Fortunately, LinkedIn recently introduced a new feature to really show off your work: You now have the ability to embed images and video at the end of each job listing. This is a great opportunity to let prospective employers see your crowning achievement or even an award you’ve won. It works with a wide range of formats including PDFs, Power Point Presentations, pictures and videos. However, it won’t generate an image of a website or blog. If you want to show that off, you can always take a screenshot of it and upload that.

2. Fill out your profile with special events qualifications

When editing your profile, you’ll see a box on the right-hand side listing what other boxes you can add to your page. Projects is a popular one, allowing you to not only spotlight a big achievement in your career, but you can tag contributors that you are connected to as well. There are also options for many other things that recruiters look for in candidates, including languages known, courses taken and volunteer work. Don’t hesitate to crow about these achievements. It’s often the very thing that separates you from other qualified applicants.

3. Follow Channels to keep up on the latest in your field

LinkedIn has an Influencer program that allows members that are well-known and well-respected in their fields to get more exposure for articles and shared wisdom they post on the site. For a broader perspective, subscribe to Channels, which groups together Influencers with top news sources to provide inspiration, current events and thoughtful articles in subject matters that you may be interested in. You can find a selection of Channels to follow, including Social Media, Small Businesses and Creative Inspiration, on LinkedIn Today. You can also follow Influencers, such as LinkedIn’s CEO Jeff Weiner, Ariana Huffington and Mark

Cuban. Once you follow or subscribe, articles and posts from these sources will show up in your news feed on your home page of LinkedIn. Many of the kinds of articles you see here tend to fall in the category of general career advice you can find on a number of popular sites, but it is nice to see it all in one place. And as the Influencer program grows, hopefully there will be more diverse and original content.

4. Reconnect with college friends

Finding old classmates isn’t just a Facebook perk. Last week LinkedIn launched University Pages. Though primarily designed to help prospective students check out their college prospects, they also have the added bonus of listing LinkedIn members who are alumni of each institution. And this where it can be valuable to you. By clicking on “Network” and the “Find Alumni” (or visiting your institution’s home page if you haven’t added your alma mater), you can see what happened to your college friends and where they ended up in their career. Who knows, they may be in a position to help you out or vice versa. You can even contact current students if you need to fill an internship or want to provide mentorship.

5. Pull it all together with LinkedIn Contacts

LinkedIn Contacts allows you to import your contacts, calendars and notes from other services into LinkedIn. You now have one place where all your conversations across different platforms are collated into one place. It’s even available to view on the LinkedIn Contacts mobile app for the iPhone. On top of that, you will be reminded of the birthdays of your contacts as well as when they get a new job or title. Both are perfect opportunities to send a congratulatory message to keep you top in their mind. LinkedIn can take in information from Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook and iPhone Contacts, as well as scanned business cards from CardMunch or business notes on Evernote. You can even use TripIt to recommend local contacts for you when you travel. The downside, of course, is handing this kind of information over to LinkedIn. They don’t record the contents of your emails, but they do have access to a great deal of information. Think carefully about which accounts you want to include and if they are all business contacts or a mix of personal and professional. For extra protection, be sure to enable two-step verification on your LinkedIn account to prevent outsiders from hacking into all of this personal information.

6 Mistakes You Should Never Make on LinkedIn EMPLOYMENT GUIDE 3-2013

You've probably heard that social media, especially LinkedIn, can help you find a You never modify your profile. ______________________________________ From ________________ job. Take a close look at your profile and how you use the network and traffic. ____________________________________________________ Approval Date ________________________ make sure youSignature aren't making these mistakes on LinkedIn.

4. You haven't customized your LinkedIn URL.

1. Your profile isn't 100% complete.

You set up a profile, isn't that enough? Not exactly! Check your profile and make sure LinkedIn tells you it is "100% complete." If it's not, take the steps needed to fill it in. Perhaps you need to reach the required 50 contacts. Have you added your education and filled in some skills? Have you included your zip code, and filled in all of the sections? Do you have a Summary and have you described your work experiences? Don't forget to include a photo; people are much less likely to want to learn more about you if you don't add a picture to your profile. When your profile is not complete, you will be harder to find on LinkedIn, and you don't get the full benefit of the network.

2. Your profile lacks compelling details and keywords.

When recruiters or others search LinkedIn, they see many results listed. What will inspire them to select your profile? To start out, make sure you use a friendly, but professional looking photo. Create a headline (the information right under your name) that makes it clear why someone should want to learn more about you. Don't use your current job title as your headline; be descriptive and tell people why you're great at what you do. When you compose your descriptive headline, or pitch, be sure to include keywords, the words people are most likely to use when they search for someone with your background. Take advantage of the opportunity to tell your story in your LinkedIn profile.

The most obvious sign of a LinkedIn novice: a non-customized URL. When you edit your profile, look under your photo. If the URL listed is a series of random letters or numbers, be sure to edit it and select your name, or some version of your name if you aren't able to secure your name as a URL. Once you customize your URL, it makes it a lot easier to share it on your business cards and your resume.

5. You never post updates.

There's a reason LinkedIn is called a "social network." The point is to share insights and information with your network. You can do this via the "update" feature. What should you say? Share ideas, links to interesting articles, and pass along links people in your network share.

6. You're not following companies.

You can learn a lot by following a company on LinkedIn. Even if they don't consistently update their page, you can easily see people in your network who work for the company and use the data at your fingertips to see if the company promotes from within (check "Insights"), and where they tend to recruit. Of course, you'll also see any jobs they post, and have the opportunity to be one of the first to apply.

J O B FA I R S I N T H E D I G I TA L AG E Job Fair announcements usually advise: Bring lots of copies of your resume! And, certainly, you should have some copies with you. But do not think you'll be able to go from employer to employer, dropping them off like Easter eggs. In this digital age, and with our current unemployment, it no longer works that way. Here's some insight into applying for jobs in the digital age. As with many tasks that require managing large amounts of information, technology has radically changed the way you apply for a job today. Most companies, and virtually all large companies, have Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) that allow them to electronically follow each job seeker who applies for a position with their company. For that reason, you will hear many employers ask you to go to their website and "apply online." This enables them to capture your information in their database and, while it may seem like a hassle -- especially after you spent all that time crafting the perfect resume -- this will actually help you move more quickly through their application process. Once you have entered your information, it can be searched and sorted by recruiters and hiring managers and routed to the appropriate people in a flash.

While I've heard jobseekers deride online applications as a lack of customer service on the part of the employer, it's really quite the opposite. companies 352013jp22_RECYC_HIEG:082005jn07_HH_CB 9/3/13 4:49 These PM Page 1 are simply trying to accurately capture and protect your personal information, and to match your skill set to the appropriate openings in a timely and efficient manner. Be sure to enter your information thoroughly and accurately. That's important for the hiring process and, if you're hired by this company, your information will most likely start your personnel file. Not to worry about your carefully crafted resume; when you've landed the interview, you will still need to present a copy. You've gotten valuable face time with recruiters, gotten a feeling for the corporate culture of different organizations and, hopefully, made a positive impression. Strong follow-up should seal the deal!

10 TIPS

FOR PROTECTING YOUR DIGITAL REPUTATION

Like it or not, the Internet and social media provide new avenues for both selfpromotion and for malicious attacks. Even if you aren't a celebrity or a politician, it's important to realize online damage to your reputation is fairly easy to facilitate. Maybe someone else wants your job, maybe an old enemy is looking for revenge, or maybe you just have a few skeletons in the closet. Who knows!

Whatever the case may be, getting proactive about protecting your digital reputation is extremely important. Like a Lego castle, once a reputation is smashed it's almost impossible to put it back together again.

1. Make Managing Your Digital Reputation A Priority

You can either hire a company to manage your reputation for you or you can manage it yourself. Look at your Internet profile as a second self, the one you want everyone to know rather than your real self. Just as you use office etiquette in the workplace rather than football game demeanor, it's time to separate your online reputation from the real you. There can be some parallels but your online reputation should say what you want it to say and no more. If you wouldn't want a prospective boss asking you questions about it, it shouldn't be online. Not familiar with computers, search, or social media? Get a pair of nerd glasses and get yourself online and in front of a computer. Learn about social media, online marketing, blogs, and personal branding. These are the new weapons in the workplace.

2. Be Paranoid About Your Own Computer(s)

Set screensaver passwords to lock the system when it's not in use. Set your security settings to stealth mode, use at least one firewall and limit your downloads to essential items from reputable sources.

3. Switch Your Operating System

7. Set Up Free E-mail Accounts

Segmenting your personal life from your work or career persona is a fantastic way to contain damage if it ever occurs. It also makes any spurious attacks much easier to trace. Use the most obvious combinations for your name and reserve them if they aren’t already taken. Make a list of these and check them every three months. Use four of them like this: The first is for friends and family. The second is for your financial self. The third is for business contacts and work. The fourth is for offers and whenever anyone not in the prior categories asks you for an e-mail address. Give each one a completely different set of passwords and security questions.

8. Structure Your Social Media Persona In The Same Way

Facebook: family and friends. Twitter: work and career. Namechk (namechk.com) will let you check and establish one user name or vanity name URL across a variety of social media channels.

9. Think About Starting A Website And/Or A Blog

Blogs are great because they encourage dialog. Here you want to build the best you. This is where you market yourself and accumulate clout in your field of expertise. Make sure to link to reputable sources and make an effort to create content on a regular basis. Start posting on related sites in your field. Learn and use a little Search Engine Optimization. The purpose of all this work is to create an online reputation on the web that will pop up whenever someone searches for your name. It provides a cushion against any malicious attacks and it will bury bad information. Really diligent searchers may still find those compromising pictures posted by your old college roommate, but these won't be the first things to pop up when someone searches your name.

10. Honestly Look At Yourself And The Worst Things You've Ever Done

Switch either to a Linux, Unix, or Apple operating system and stop using Windows.

4. Schedule Regular Cleanings

Manage your browser settings and dump your cookie and search history caches on a regular basis.

5. Don't Post Sensitive Information

Understand that really sensitive information doesn't belong on a smartphone or a computer that ever hooks up to the Internet. Most professionals should have at least two computers: a secure stand-alone and a "public" machine. When transferring files stick to a one way flow of information (from the secure machine out but never in). It should go without saying but sensitive personal information never belongs on a work or employer's machine.

Try to think about ways this information might come out or how it could be used against you. Don’t exclude public domain information and documents including divorce documents. Then prepare a damage control plan ahead of time. Most large companies do this type of planning every year. Finally, take several hours to figure out what is out there about you already. Advanced Google Search is the deepest search available but there are also ways to search message boards (Boardtracker, Omgili, Boardreader) and social media (social mention) and images (Google Images, Yahoo, Bing, Flickr, and Tineye for reverse search). The best part of all this online reputation crafting is, once you have it set up, you can use it forever for personal marketing and career management. In addition, your new skills will be a huge asset to any employer!

6. Write It Out

If you really need to vent secrets about your private life into words, seriously consider doing so with a pen and paper and then burning it.
