Day 8
• Enjoy a walking tour of Auckland, led by your Tour Director.
• Participate in a service project to restore a natural wetland and plant a native tree to offset carbon emissions.
Fly to Auckland • Visit Mount Eden, the highest natural point in Auckland. • Spend time at Muriwai Beach and learn how wild winds and large waves shaped the coastal landscape. • Daily reflection and group discussion.
Tauranga • Enjoy free time to explore Taranga City. Day 9
Taranga to Rotorua
Day 4
• Visit a kiwi orchard and learn about sustainability practices at Comvita, the producer of Manuka honey.
• Travel to the Waitakere region to explore beaches, streams, and rainforests and learn of the natural water systems that operate all around us. Visit the Arataki Visitor’s Centre and receive an introduction to rainforests and their importance.
• Travel to Rotorua.
Day 5
Rotorua
Auckland
Auckland to Tauranga • Visit the Bombay Hills fruit stall. • Travel to Taranga on New Zealand’s North Island. • Take a guided walking tour through the Karangahake Gorge.
• Enjoy a cruise on Rotoiti Lake and spend the afternoon in the geothermal pools. Day 10
• Visit Te Puia, a geothermal reserve owned by the Maori. • Participate in a craft workshop and learn the Haka, a Maori war dance.
• Visit Martha Hill Gold Mine in the town of Waihi.
• Take in views of the city from the Mt. Ngongotaha skyline gondola and enjoy a luge adventure ride.
Day 6
Day 11
• Study macro environments, the water cycle, and forests and rivers by completing a stream discharge measurement, using biological indicators to determine water quality, identifying the habitat role of a rainforest, and understanding water as renewable energy at McLarens Falls Park and the Wairoa River.
• Enjoy free time to explore Rotorua.
Tauranga
Day 7
Tauranga • Study recreation rivers and estuaries by looking at sediment deposit from the Wairoa river, examining plankton, and exploring inter-tidal marine ecology. • Enjoy a leisurely kayak down the Wairoa River. • Spend time in Waimarino Adventure Park. • Visit the Tauranga Historic Village and take a tour of Kuaka Native Plant Restoration Base.
Rotorua to Waitomo • Travel to Waitomo. On the way, visit Arapuni Hydro Electric Scheme and take an aerial walkway above the power station. Days 12–13
Waitomo to Auckland • Take a guided walk through the Waitomo Caves. • Visit a Kiwi bird hatchery and learn more about the endangered species. • Travel to Auckland. • Final reflection and group discussion. • Day 13: Return home and complete your online Global Perspectives course.
