National Flag of India India’s flag is made up of of three horizontal stripes in deep saffron (which stands for courage) on top, white (which stands for truth) in the middle, and dark green (which stands for growth) on the bottom. The center of the white band features a navy blue 24-spoked wheel that symbolizes India’s system of justice.


Map of India Bordered by Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, India is the world’s seventh largest country. It is a large peninsula with more than 7,400 kilometers (4,600 miles) of Indian Ocean coastline. The Lakshadweep Islands off the country’s southwest coast, as well as the Islands of Andaman and Nicobar in the Andaman Sea, are part of its territory.

National Bird of India: Indian Peafowl

The Indian peafowl, or blue peacock, is a large bird found throughout the Indian subcontinent. The Hindu god Indra is said to have blessed the peacock with “one thousand eyes” in exchange for its bravery, but these brilliant birds have deep religious and cultural meaning for all of India’s religious groups.

National Flower of India: Lotus The lotus is an aquatic flowering plant with large, round leaves that float on the water. Lotus flowers are strongly associated with both Buddhism and Hinduism. In India, some Hindu gods are shown sitting or standing on lotus flowers.


Men’s Clothing: Dhoti The dhoti is a traditional male garment from India. It is a large piece of cloth tied in a to create a kind of baggy pants. It is often worn for religious ceremonies and is the male counterpart to the female sari.


Women’s Clothing: Sari The sari is a traditional female garment from India. It is a large length of silk or cotton cloth draped and tucked about the body to create a kind of dress. It is typically worn for religious ceremonies.


Taj Mahal The Taj Mahal is one of India’s most beautiful buildings. It was constructed during 1632– 1653 by Emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his favorite queen. It is made of pure white marble and adorned with gold, silver, semi-precious stones, floral patterns, sculptures, and verses from the Koran.


Namaste Namaste is a word used by Indians to greet someone with respect and honor. The speaker says “namaste” while bowing slightly and pressing his or her palms together with fingers pointing upwards.


Elephant Ride

The Indian elephant is associated with royalty and is the country’s main cultural symbol. The popular Hindu god Lord Ganesha, who removes obstacles and grants good luck, has the head of an elephant.


Man from Pushkar

Pushkar is a city in Rajastan, a state in northwest India. The city is famous for the annual Pushkar Camel Fair, in which people gather to trade and cattle, horses, and camels. It is sacred pilgrimage site for members of the Sikh religion.


Man Playing Sitar The sitar is a traditional Indian stringed instrument. It is made up of a rounded gourd, a long, hollow neck, and more than 20 strings. The player rests the instrument between his knee and foot and plucks the strings to create sound.
