Separated parents to pay maintenance admin fee

The Government have issued letters to separated parents that unless they can reach an amicable agreement, they will be charged for administering maintenance payments. Parents who have used Child Support Agency (CSA) will receive a letter warning that the parent not living with the child will pay a 20% fee on their payments, with the other parent losing 4% of the money received. This means the non-resident parent will pay 20% on top of their payments, so for every £100 they pay £120, while the parent living with the child would receive only £96 as a result of the 4% charge on them. The changes come as a result of the CSA being replaced with the Child Maintenance Service (CMS), and will provide an incentive for parents to reach an agreement, according to Steve Webb, work and pensions minister. Webb said “The goal here is to get more child maintenance for more children and to make the default for parents,
even though they have separated, to sort things out for themselves rather than rely on the state bureaucracy.” The letters, that are being sent to 50,000 parents in the UK, also state that the system will involve a £20 charge to set up, with continuing charges on payments. Chief executive Fiona Weir said: “While many parents are able to agree private child maintenance arrangements, for many other parents this just isn’t possible without government help. “We’re very concerned that closing CSA cases and bringing in charges may deter some parents from making new child maintenance agreements or pressure single parents into unstable arrangements, and children will lose out on vital support. “Child maintenance can make a big difference to children, so we encourage all parents not to be put off by the charges but to seek help, if they need it, to make arrangements for their children.” By Kaitlin McManus
£30 million pounds cocaine bust on Clyde Continued from page 1 It has been said that the cocaine if cut and sold on the street, would make treble or even quadruple the amount it was initially worth, after a variety of additives were added. The average purity of cocaine when it finally hits the street is around 20% to 30%(it has been known to fall lower in some circumstances.) According to data from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and European crimefighting agency Europol, the annual cocaine trade is worth $84 billion dollars. So as you can imagine the £30 million pounds drug bust is but a splash in the ocean in comparison to the entire cocaine industry. Shockingly, according to the same report made last year, the yearly global drug trade is worth $435 billion dollars a year. Thanks to the investigation, which included officers from National Crime Agency, Border Policing Command, Dutch police, Police Scotland and also the Yorkshire Police a considerable
amount of cocaine was stopped from entering into civilian life. The 87,400 tonne Cape Maria had travelled from Puerto Nuevo Columbia with a legitimate cargo of coal and was waiting to berth at Hunterson when officials stormed the ship, finding the cocaine haul within the ship’s rudders. The three detained criminals from the Netherlands planned on using diving equipment, a rigid inflatable boat and an underwater scooter to retrieve the hidden cocaine, under the cover of darkness after the ship had left Hunterson. The three men arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking had arrived in Ayrshire posing as tourists and appeared at Leeds Magistrates Court last Tuesday. The three were remanded into custody.

School pupils ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ at Rugby Park Over 90 pupils from Annanhill and Kirkstyle Primary Schools learned how to ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ at Kilmarnock Football Club this week. The club worked with educational charity ‘Show Racism the Red Card (Scotland)’ to arrange the event which demonstrated that racism is something that the club and the fan base will simply not accept. The youngsters spent the day taking part in educational workshops promoting anti-racism as well as enjoying a tour of the ground. They then got the opportunity to act
as journalists and participate in a ‘press conference’ about racism with members of the Kilmarnock team, local councillors including Provost Jim Todd and PC Peter Brown of Police Scotland. Provost Todd said: “Kilmarnock FC has been a great supporter of the campaign over the years and we hope that by taking part in this event, the pupils will be inspired to go back to their schools and communities and spread the anti-racism message.”
With pupils from Annanhill and Kirkstyle schools were Derek Ferguson (ex Rangers FC), Robbie Winters, Councillor Kathy Morrice, Councillor Tom Cook, Provost Jim Todd, Connor Brown from Kilmarnock FC and PC Peter Brown.

NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Douglas Grant Rehabilitation Centre, based at Ayrshire Central Hospital, has benefited from a generous donation from the Inner Wheel Club of Loudoun.
Main photo: Cummnock Academy Head of Art, Teresa Lopez, with some of her pupils. Insert: Hannah Drearie, with one of her paintings.
Cumnock’s Glaisnock Centre has been used for many events over the years including Christmas lights switch on, craft workshops and street theatre. And now, as it nears the end of its life, it is finding a new use as a gallery space showcasing the artistic talents of local school pupils. The brainchild of Town Centre Manager, Fiona Nicolson, the “galleries” are shop fronts in the Glaisnock precinct vacated ahead of the impending redevelopment which have been fitted out with elaborate frames to show work by pupils from Greenmill, Netherthird, St Patrick’s and Barshare Primary Schools and Cumnock Academy. Each of the schools has their own gallery in which they will rotate
artworks over the coming months to include painting, photography, textiles, drawing and jewellery design. Fiona Nicolson explains: “While we await the redevelopment of the centre, the presence of empty shop units gave us an ideal opportunity to provide these changing galleries. The work on display proves the huge talent we have in our local schools and it is great to be able to show it to a wider audience.”
Fiona continued “I’ve already had great feedback from visitors and I hope people will return regularly to see new work as it appears. It’s also
a way to support those businesses that are still open for business and trading in the Glaisnock centre including childrens wear, electronics, menswear, opticians, butchers, bakers, shoe shop and supermarket” Cumnock Academy Head of Art, Teraessa Lopez was joined by some of her pupils as they visited their gallery. The current exhibition includes work from Danni Bryce, April Sloan, Catherine Lees, Rebekah Lynch, Jill Forbes, Carly Ann Cree, Hannah Dearie, Hannah Paton and Kirsten Sykes.
Each year the club holds a bridge lunch to raise funds for a different charity. Around 100 people attended their most recent event and helped to raise £1000 through ticket sales and a raffle.
The sizable donation was presented to Douglas Grant Rehabilitation Centre staff by Jan Ireland, Anne Morton and Isobel McLean from the club. Jacqueline Downs, Rehabilitation Co-ordinator, said: “On behalf of the centre I would like to thank the Inner Wheel Club of Loudoun for their kind generosity. This is an amazing amount of money and will help provide support for the people of Ayrshire and Arran who come to us for care.”

East Ayrshire needs modern apprenticeships Irvine Bay regeneration
Five young people from East Ayrshire are heading up a bus back campaign from East Ayrshire Council asking employers to give other Modern Apprentices a start in their career. Chelsea Hood, Ben Stirling, Stuart Queen, Craig Martin and Neil McGee were all helped into new jobs thanks to wage support and training assistance available free to local companies through the Council’s Economic Development team. They and their employers have joined forces to tell their stories and encourage other businesses to consider making room for a new trainee. As company order books start to fill in the midst of a slowly improving economic climate, many local firms are starting to feel the need to take on additional staff. But for most, hard hit by the constraints of the recession and those just starting up with limited resources, the process and cost of
taking on a new employee can be an expensive and difficult undertaking. That’s where East Ayrshire Council’s Economic Development team can help. With part funding of wages, help with recruitment and ongoing training support, East Ayrshire based companies can now get assistance to select, employ and train young people to help grow their workforce. The five Modern Apprentices featured in the campaign have all made a success of their opportunities to train and gone on to gain full time employment with the companies which recruited and trained them. They are representative of more than 300 young people who have been
helped to gain qualifications and full time employment by the Council in the last two years in all spheres, ranging from engineering to knitwear, customer service, warehousing, joinery and construction work and social care. Councillor Jim Buchanan, Spokesperson for Delivering Community Regeneration, East Ayrshire Council said: “What impresses me every time I meet these apprentices and their employers is the enthusiasm from both sides, the dedication shown by both the young people and their bosses to ensure that their placements and development are a success in the long run.”
Businesses and people in Irvine Bay will hear how work being carried out at i3, Irvine’s Enterprise Area is bringing jobs and investment to the area when Irvine Bay Regeneration Company holds its annual public meeting next month.
The events take place at the Gailes Hotel in Irvine on 5th June, with two meetings – one at 11am and the second at 6pm – to allow as many people as possible to attend. The theme of the two meetings is realising the potential of life sciences and will discuss why this is a vital time for the sector in Scotland, and the role of i3, Irvine’s Enterprise Area in attracting jobs and investment to North Ayrshire. Attendees will be updated on the progress of all regeneration projects
From Friday 30 May, the works will be carried out over two consecutive nights between 22:00 and approximately 14:00 the next

The evening event will have a stronger community focus, and will also feature an exhibition highlighting this year’s plans for the company’s education programme – in partnership with the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Refreshments will be served half an hour before each meeting starts, from 10.30am and 5.30pm.
Patrick Wiggins, Chief Executive of Irvine Bay, said: “Our annual public meeting allows everyone who is interested the opportunity to come along and get a full update on the work being carried out, and to ask questions.” The events are free, but booking is essential and can be done online at www.registerforevent.co.uk/ irvinebayapm2014 or by calling 0141 357 2235.

day. Due to the location and nature of the works it will be necessary to implement lane closures during these hours to protect the travelling public and the workforce On Friday 30 May, lane closures will be in place in both directions between the Bellfield Interchange and Moorfield Roundabout while on Saturday 31 May lane closures will be in place between Moorfield Roundabout and the North Ayrshire Council boundary.
Floods at the Dean Ford in Kilmarnock will soon be a thing of the past as plans for the construction of Dean Bridge were approved by East Ayrshire Council’s Cabinet today. The Dean Ford floods on numerous occasions every year during periods of heavy rainfall, resulting in stranded vehicles, road closures and traffic diversions round the town centre. Regardless of warnings, drivers often attempt to cross the water, putting not only their own lives at risk, but also the lives of emergency services called to their rescue. The ford itself is in poor structural condition and requires regular maintenance to prevent debris causing blockages. In addition, the nearby Lauder Footbridge, which was opened back in 1905, also needs to be replaced. The local fishing community has also raised concerns about the current environmental dangers to migrating fish. Today Cabinet agreed to new proposals which would re-profile the budget to allow for work to commence on the Dean Bridge, at a total project cost of £1.85m. The new proposals will move the alignment of
the road slightly downstream, with the construction of a new road bridge incorporating pedestrian footways and the removal of the temporary footbridge. Work will commence on the project immediately to design and manufacture the pre-cast elements of the bridge, with site works anticipated to start in September 2014 and is expected to be completed by February 2015. Councillor Tom Cook, Depute Leader and Spokesperson for Improving Community Safety said: “In the interest of public safety, this is absolutely the right decision to take. Kilmarnock is quite unique in having a ford crossing an arterial road in its town centre, but it’s had its day. “The new Dean Bridge will improve road safety locally by providing the travelling public, and pedestrians, with a safe route across the river, as well as improving access to Dean Castle Country Park and the new Kilmarnock school campus when it opens.” Listed building consent for the removal of the Lauder Footbridge was granted on the condition that the H-frame supports remain on site. Ayr rapist jailed for 7 years
A man who raped a 34-yearold woman in her home in North Ayrshire has been jailed for seven years. Barry McBurnie, from Ayr, was convicted of raping the woman - who cannot be named for legal reasons - at her home in Irvine on 29 September 2013.
The 33-year-old was also convicted of assaulting his victim.
McBurnie claimed during the trial that his victim was lying. He accused her of putting on an “Oscar winning performance”. He wept as he was sentenced seven years. Judge Bill Dunlop QC told McBurnie: “You appear to have little regard for women.”
The makers of Buckfast, have announced, that just in time for barbecue season they are releasing Buckfast in smaller measures, Buckfast in a can. The infamous tonic wine that contains as much caffeine as eight cans of coke was specifically named in 7000 crime, reports throughout the last three years. The cans which will be 25cl’s will be launched with a price tag of £2.90 and if the initial run of 16,000 is successful will become a permanent partner in crime to the 75cl bottle and 35cl bottles. On average tonic wine is mentioned six times a day in crime reports by officers throughout the country. It can be argued however that there will have been other drinks mentioned in crime reports and in Scotland it amounts to less than 1% percent of all
the alcohol sold across the country. With the introduction of cans alongside glass bottles, there should hopefully be a decrease in the amount of attacks and injuries people suffer as a result of being attacked with Buckfast bottles. However the tonic wine created by the Benedictine Monks has a name that immediately raises the hackles amongst politicians and members of society. Arguably it can be said that due to the popularity or infamy that surrounds the “poison potion” it has taken on a life of its own and is much of a badge of honour to drinkers as it is a scourge to society. When you consider the millions/ billions of pounds worth of advertising that the larger alcohol brands collectively bombard us with on television per year, in stark
comparison the Devon Monks spend nothing. Not a single penny. Stewart Wilson sales manager for Buckfast’s distribution company J. Chandler said “The reason why we wanted to bring out a can is firstly we get asked quite regularly to bring out Buckfast in different shapes and sizes and it’s something we have looked at but never really considered at any great length.” In the last sales reports released in 2013 more than half the entire worlds supply is consumed in Scotland with 80% percent of that being sold in the “Buckfast Triangle”, (the area between Airdrie, Coatbridge, and Bellshill). One things for sure, barbecues in the “Buckfast triangle” will be a hair raising occasion this summer. By

Work is due to begin at University Hospital Ayr in May and at University Hospital Crosshouse in mid-June.
Bam Construction regional director Doug Keillor said: “Bam Construction is delighted to be working with NHS Ayrshire & Arran on the construction
of the new Emergency Department and Combined Assessment Unit at University Hospital Ayr and the Combined Assessment Unit at University Hospital Crosshouse.
“These facilities will provide improved healthcare facilities for the local communities and Bam looks forward to creating opportunities during the construction period for local suppliers and contractors.” The contract was awarded under the Health Facilities Scotland Framework, which expired in January 2013. Scotland ranks high in Trip Advisor awards By Richard Garland
Trip Advisor has awarded Scotland three places in its most prestigious Top Ten destinations to visit in Britain.
www.ayrshire-news.com
The worlds largest travel site announced the winners of its Certificate of Excellence Awards, now into their fourth year.
The awards take several things into consideration before finalising on the winner of the award, hospitality excellence and is only given to establishments, eateries, accommodations and attractions, which according to Trip Advisor are constantly awarded traveller reviews on the website.
With Perth, Ayr and Fort Williams coming in third, fourth, and fifth respectively each have received a Certificate of Excellence award. Windermere in Cumbria came first with Llandudno in Wales following with a close second.
Its only the greatest destinations that are awarded the Certificate of Excellence and it really does mean that the destinations given the prestige are the upper echelon of businesses listed on the website. With
the
awards
reflecting
the
opinions of the ordinary people who have visited each destination and voiced their opinion, its really a vote by the people for the people..
Mike Cantlay Chairman of VisitScotland said “One of the top reasons for visiting Scotland is the warmth of the welcome people receive so it is brilliant that we are matching those expectations across the country. For three of the top five to bein Scotland shows that visitors really appreciate our well-renowned Scottish hospitality.”

A new play will be performed at the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway as part of the First World War Centenary events. CauseWay: The Story of the Alloway Suffragettes is written by Victoria Bianchi and directed by David Overend. The production is funded by South Ayrshire Arts Partnership and University of the West of Scotland, and is presented at the museum on 14 and 15 June 2014 at 2pm, 3.15pm and 4.30pm.
Part play and part guided tour, CauseWay tells the story of two suffragettes who cycled from Glasgow to Alloway in 1914 intent on blowing up Burns Cottage. Weaving the words of Robert Burns with performance, storytelling and live
music, the performance questions the links between the work of Burns and the suffragettes’ cause, whilst also exploring women’s rights across the world today.
Director, David Overend, said: “Despite the fact that we are dealing with events of 100 years ago, there are still so many parallels between the suffragettes’ cause and the plight of many minority groups in Britain and across the world today. This is a hugely relevant and exciting project, and it’s fantastic to be able to continue to develop a collaborative relationship between UWS and such an important cultural site in Ayrshire.” Anyone interested in attending one of the performances should contact the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum on 0844 493 2601.

If shoppers want a bag, they will need to pay a minimum of 5p, with proceeds going to charity.
Many supermarkets like Lidl and Marks & Spencer already charge for bags.
Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead said it will encourage Scotland to start thinking more about recycling and waste.
He said: “Single-use bags are a symbol of our throwaway society, with around 750 million given out by supermarkets every year in Scotland alone - that’s 12 bags per person for each month of the year and more per head of population than anywhere else across these islands.”

Game of Thrones Review Season 4 Episode 7: Mockingbird By
Lex Haringman
Hopes were high for this week after Peter Dinklage (who plays Tyrion Lannister) moved us with his performance in the previous episode’s conclusion. This episode, however, was a little jumpy in its portrayal events, never staying long enough in one setting for us to watch the progression of particular characters. Because of this, only a few things in the episode really stood out. The introduction of a much anticipated character, the hulking mass known as The Mountain, was one of them. The actor recast to play this role stands at an impressive height of just over 7 feet and is considered to be one of the world’s strongest men. There is little disputing the fact that he has the stature of a champion, but hopefully the next episode will reveal whether he can pull off The Mountain’s brutal reputation. Last episode left us rooting for Tyrion after it seemed that everyone in King’s Landing, apart from his brother Jaime, had turned against him. In a surprise twist, he demanded a trial by combat, only to have his sister Cersei select The Mountain as her champion. For most of the episode we are led to believe that no one will fight for Tyrion – not even his friend and sellsword Bronn. Near the end of the episode however, Oberyn Martell pledges himself to Tyrion, seeing this as an opportunity to take revenge on his sister’s rapist and killer.
Its conclusion takes place in the Eyrie, where Lysa dangles Sansa Stark over the Moon Door after witnessing an illicit kiss between the girl and her husband Petyr Baelish. This kiss is arguably the most awkward and repulsive of the
show, watching Littlefinger force himself upon an unwitting Sansa. We know all too well what is coming next when he stands before his wife, her back far too close to the gaping hole, and tells her that he has only loved one woman. All apart from the deluded Lysa knows that this woman is the deceased Catelyn Stark. When he pushes her we are not shocked, but we do feel the drop as her body tumbles thousands of feet. Overall, Episode seven of the series does not reach the emotional heights of its predecessor, but it does set up expectations for the next episode. Unfortunately, we will have another week to find out whether the next episode will live up to them.

A woman has been sentenced to death over her claims to be a Christian in a prison in Sudan.
Meriam Ibrahim, 26, is eight months pregnant. She was found guilty of apostasy- leaving Islam- even though Meriam testified that she was never a Muslim, and was raised a Christian by her Ethiopia-born mother.
At least 31 people have been killed when two SUVs vehicles ploughed through a marketplace in China’s Xinjiang, and explosives were thrown out of the windows. Local officials have announced the death toll is at 31, and more than 90 are injured. Photos have been posted on social media showing a column of smoke and chaos at the market, with
bloodied people lying on the treelined road near small stands selling fruit, vegetables and eggs. “There were two vehicles that drove like crazy toward the morning market ... there were definitely people killed,” a witness who declined to give his name told Reuters by telephone. “The market was total chaos, hawkers and shoppers started running everywhere ... it was definitely a terrorist act. I’m so angry.”
Supermarket giant Tesco is to move sweets and chocolate away from the till areas in the smaller stores.
It was brought to the courts attention after her Father’s family said that she had been born a Muslim and renounced Islam. “I was never a Muslim,” she told the court. “I was raised a Christian from the start.” Her husband, Daniel Wani, a Sudanese man with US citizenship, found her shackled to the wall of her cell, after visiting her. Their 20-month-old son is also
in prison with Meriam, because the boy is considered Muslim and Daniel is Christian. Daniel, who has muscular dystrophy, was born in Sudan but moved to America in 1998 where he moved to New Hampshire.
Abu Hamza sentenced Thailand military to life in prison
seize control
Mere days after declaring martial law, Thailand’s military have staged a coup d’etat and overthrown the ineffective government. In a televised broadcast, the army chief said that the military’s main ambition was to restore order and enact political reforms.
Abu Hamza the hook handed hate preacher who tried to radicalise followers in Britain has been found guilty of terrorism charges in the United States. The twisted preacher faced eleven charges including conspiring to set up a terror training camp in Oregon, conspiring to kidnap Americans in Yemen and providing support to Terrorist organisations. Hamza was found guilty on all charges and will likely face the rest of his life incarcerated at America’s federal Supermax high security prison in Colorado, home to several other convicted terrorists.
The guilty verdict is the eventual result of a protracted 10 year battle to have him extradited from Britain to the US. Hamza the orator, had already spent time in British Prison for using his sermons to incite murder and racial hatred. It is believed that Home Secretary Theresa May will pursue means of stripping Hamza of his British citizenship, making him stateless and finally and formally ending his link to the UK. Hamza is expected to appeal the courts decision.
This comes after months of unrest in Thailand with mass protests and calls for the government to resign. With calls of corruption stemming from within the walls of the Thai Government and increasing disillusion amongst the population the military will have been left with no choice but to stage a Coup. The military had pleaded with the political parties to use political reason to come to an understanding and allow Thailand to return to normality. The main problem facing Thailand is that both sides of the main political coin are so far apart in terms of ideology and policy that there can be no middle ground. The Bangkok Elites and the Pro

Ukraine soldiers killed in attack Government Red Shirt Movement are as far apart on the political spectrum as possible. With the Bangkok Elites supporting the aristocracy and the Red Shirts supporting reform and more rights for the average man. The political outrage, quickly engulfed Thailand last year as the ruling Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra (who is the younger sister of shamed and exiled ex P.M Thaksin Shinawatra) dissolved the lower house of parliament (effectively wiping out her political rivals power). The military have stood by and watched the demonstrations and protesters increase in numbers and fury rendering several entire areas of Bangkok blockaded for months. Previously this month Ms Yingluck was judicially removed as head of government for alleged abuse of her political power.(she is accused of corruption after helping her relative into a key role in the bureaucracy. The military have promised to return the country to normal when the political problem has been resolved. By

The government in Ukraine has confirmed a deadly attack against troops, killing at least 10 soldiers. The attacks took place at a checkpoint in the Volnovakha area in the eastern region of Donetsk, and come just three days before Ukraine’s presidential election. The interim Prime Minister of Ukraine, Arseny Yatseniuk, has announced he has evidence of Russian involvement in the violence and has called for an emergency session of the UN Security Council. Russia has appeared to be withdrawing troops from its border with Ukraine. White House spokesman Jay Carney said: “Should this be the beginning of a withdrawal we would welcome such an effort.” However, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Wednesday that the alliance had still seen no “visible evidence” of a Russian troop withdrawal from the border. Speaking at a news conference in Sarajevo, Rasmussen said “I wake up every morning hoping to see a real and meaningful withdrawal of Russian troops, but I have to tell you that so far we have not seen any visible evidence of a withdrawal.”
The families of four yachtsmen who are missing at sea have said they are hopeful that the men will be found. They said they were “very positive” and felt everything that can be was being done to find the men. A meeting was called at the Foreign Office, after debris was spotted near to where the 40ft Cheeki Rafiki disappeared. The vessel was sailing back to the UK from Antigua when it went missing. The four missing crew members are
Paul Goslin, 56; skipper Andrew Bridge, 22; Steve Warren, 52; and 22-year-old James Male. Foreign Office minister Hugh Robertson said “the UK government remains in constant contact with our US colleagues and I was able to update them on the continuing search. “I’d like to thank the US Coast Guard for their significant efforts thus far, and to assure everybody that the UK government will continue to do everything possible to try and locate these missing yachtsmen.” By

First UK inland surf lake to open next year
The go-ahead has been given to build the UK’s first inland surf lake in Wales. The lake set to be built by company Surf Snowdonia, will be three times the size of a football pitch.
A model of the surf pool has been built near the Spanish city of San Sebastian. An underwater foil operates beneath a pier that runs the length of the lagoon and working like a snow plough, it pushes the water upwards and outwards. It has proven to be a huge hit there, and is set to be just as succesfull over here in the UK. Project Director, Andrew Ainscough
said “The wave is on tap. You book your hour online, you turn up and you get in. It’s awesome”. The Snowdonia site is set to open around Easter 2015 and looks set to be the first of many Wavegardens around the world which could revolutionise the sport of surfing. By

This is a bid to encourage healthy eating, after research was conducted. The move will be introduced into Tesco Metro and Express stores throughout the UK. Tesco chief executive Philip Clarke said: “We all know how easy it is to be tempted by sugary snacks at the checkout, and we want to help our customers lead healthier lives. “We’ve already removed billions of calories from our soft drinks, sandwiches and ready meal ranges... and we will continue to look for opportunities to take out more.” The move has been welcomed by parents. Katie O’Donovan of Mumsnet said: “Popping into a shop with a small child in tow can sometimes feel like navigating an assault course. If you’ve made it to the checkout in one piece it can be really frustrating to then be faced with an unhealthy array of sweets designed to tempt your child. “It’s really positive to see a supermarket responding to the views of their customers and trying to make life that little bit easier.” By

Plastic £5 to launch in Britain
The first plastic banknotes in Great Britain are said to be in use next year. Clydesdale Bank branches will issue two million £5 notes. The bank is authorised to issue Scottish banknotes, and will release the limited edition notes the year before the Bank of England puts plastic banknotes in general circulation. The new polymer note features the Forth Bridge on its 125th anniversary. Banks polymer notes stay cleaner and are more secure than current ones. More than 20 countries around the world have already adopted polymer banknotes. It is said that plastic banknotes will last longer than paper banknotes and are even said to survive a spin in the washing machine. Three banks in Scotland, including Clydesdale Bank, and four in Northern Ireland are authorised to issue banknotes.
Parents have been urged to sign up to a new scheme that sends out appeals when a child goes missing. The Home Secretary claim it will send out information quickly as soon as a child is reported missing. Theresa May has given her support to the Child Rescue Alert service and welcomed the upcoming launch of the UK’s first purpose-built website providing information on dealing with child abduction, the Child Abduction Hub. The Child Abduction Hub is a new online source of information and advice on all types of child abduction. Home Secretary Theresa May said “These initiatives will offer vital
support and protection for missing children and their families. “When a child goes missing, it is crucial that as many people as possible are looking for them. The Child Rescue Alert will spread appeals quickly and widely, via text messages and digital billboards, increasing the likelihood of a child being found. I would urge everyone to sign up to this scheme. “The Child Abduction Hub will be a key source of information on all types of child abduction – whether it’s committed by a parent, a family friend or a stranger. This will help parents, teachers, and other professionals make common-sense, well informed decisions on how to keep children safe.”
Ex Radio 1 DJ to stand trial for historic sex crimes Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Chris Denning is to be charged with 41 sexual offences, the Crown Prosecution Service has said. The alleged offences dating from 1967 to 1985 are related to 22 boys aged nine to 16. Denning has been snared after being arrested under Operation Yewtree in June 2013 and is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates court on Friday. The ex BBC Radio 1 DJ was one of the founding members when the station was launched in 1967. He was initially arrested and convicted for sexual offences in 1974 which systematically destroyed his career and since then he has spent three decades flitting in and out of jail. Denning was the first announcer heard on Radio 2 when it first went on air in 1964.
He worked as music producer for The Beatles and helped launch the Bay City Rollers to stardom whilst running his own music and video production business. Denning left Radio 1 in 1969 after accusations that his new job at Decca Records was conflicting with his responsibilities at Radio 1. At Decca Records he was employed at the same time as convicted paedophile Jonathan King whilst also developing the career of Gary Glitter at the record company. Baljit Ubhey, London chief crown prosecutor said “The decision to prosecute has been taken in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors and Crown Prosecution Service legal guidance on rape and child sexual abuse.” By

Anyway, I do hope you enjoy what the cards have to say.

Archangel Michael The new movie ‘The Quiet Ones’ suggests that the paranormal is hidden from us, but paranormal researchers say that it’s different in Glasgow, which was identified last year as the second spookiest city in the UK because of the hundreds of paranormal experiences reported by its residents.
Showing in the Webster Theatre 15th, 16th, 17th of May – the Albany Greenock 23/24th May – East Kilbride Arts Centre 30th of May and Bathgate Regal Theatre on the 4th and 5th of June.
The Scottish Society for Psychical Research (SSPR) has been investigating such reports for over two decades and is now celebrating over 26 years of public lectures on the paranormal, held in the Boyd Orr building of the University of Glasgow on the first Thursday of each month, September to May. This year’s programme includes: poltergeists, mediumship demonstrations, accounts of witchcraft and possession, post-mortem survival, near-death and out-of-body experiences and UFO encounters.

You can call on him in all areas of your life especially if you need help with courage, guidance, energy, motivation or protection. I work with this amazing Angel for protection, I ask him to put protection round my loved ones, my home and my car - he is like an Angelic bodyguard. He is also wonderful for shielding us from other people or places negativity. What I do before I experience someone or somewhere negative is to ask Archangel Michael please shield me from other people’s negativity. Like magic Archangel Michael will surround you in a powerful shield, which absorbs the negativity. Archangel Michael is wonderful if you are looking for guidance on what is the right path to take. My husband had just finished a university degree and did not know what would be the right move to make, so I told him to ask Michael before going to bed and see what he got so in the morning. When he woke up he had a feeling that he would know the answer that morning. He got up, the post had been and he had been accepted for a Masters University course, so he got his answer. The aura colour of Archangel Michael is Royal Blue with tinges of Royal Purple. Archangel Michael is also known as the light workers Angel as he helps, protects and guides
light worker down their right path. Archangel Michael is fabulous at lifting worries and stress. Just like everyone else, I find at times, I catch myself going into worry about family, work or other things. When I find myself doing this I say Archangel Michael “please help lift worries and stress off me now” and it is like magic you feel the worries melt away, but remember you also have a part to play you must be willing to let them. If you are feeling stuck or that you are having problems letting go of traumas and issues from your past or fears about the future, doing a cord cutting with Michael can really help you let go and help you move forward fearlessly. Archangel Michael carries a sword of light that he uses energetically to cut cords of fear from us so we can move forward to having the life we wish. I like to bring in the healing angel when doing a cord cutting as he can send healing to the issues.
Cord Cutting with Archangels Michael and Raphael Ask Archangels Michael and Raphael to come to your side and ask Archangel Michael with his sword of love and light to release you of all cords not serving you for your highest greatest good. Take several deep breaths and on the out breath imagine Michael going round you with his sword of light releasing all the cords. As you breathe out let go of all the cords in all directions of time past, present and future. Call Angel Raphael to send healing and love to all the cords that have been cut and back to all people places and issues in all directions of time past, present and future. Wishing you Love and Angel Blessings. For more details contact Diane on: Mob: 07968962395 Email: diane4angels@aol.com
Glasgow has plenty of mysteries to offer, which Geoff Holder has written about in ‘Paranormal Glasgow’ and ‘A Guide to Mysterious Glasgow.’ Look around the city: the supernatural looks down from our Gothic buildings with gargoyles, angels, occult symbols and sacred geometry, captured even in our legendary coat of arms. Have you noticed St George killing a dragon in the Gallowgate? Tales abound of a vampire lynch mob in the Gorbals, ghosts on Byres Road and the haunting of so many of our buildings, including our oldest standing building, the Provan Hall. Don’t think that Bonnybridge is the main UFO hot spot either. In 2004 West Kilbride reported more sightings and Glasgow has been named as the UFO capital of Scotland. As a recognised Scottish charity and the second biggest organisation of its kind in the UK, the SSPR investigates the full range of ostensible paranormal phenomena in a scientific manner, confidentially and free of charge. SSPR investigators have been helping the public discreetly for decades to take a sensible attitude to paranormal phenomena. You can read some of their anonymised investigative case files and vigil reports on their website or in their quarterly magazine ‘The Psi Review.’ One vigil that you can read about on-line is the Britannia Panopticon Music Hall in the Trongate, the oldest surviving music hall in the world. It also hosted freakshows and a zoo and was reputed to be haunted. The murder in the basement added to the atmosphere and SSPR investigators found their filmed investigation to be intriguing and very worthwhile. One of the most impressive SSPR cases occurred in Pollokshields. A family had been disturbed by violent poltergeist activity that terrified them for over six months. Phenomena, such as loud bangs and objects being thrown had been witnessed by local politicians, doctors, joiners, plumbers, electricians, clergymen, spiritualists, reporters and the police. The SSPR founder President, Emeritus Professor of Astronomy, the late Archie Roy, noted that the police officer in charge of the case said to him, “You know, I had to take some of my men off that case. They were turning in reports like ‘The bed was proceeding in a northerly direction.’” Working with a local clergyman, Prof. Archie Roy realised that the phenomena seemed to follow a teenager around and when
the teenager left for a holiday, the phenomena followed him, including when he returned. This wasn’t hoaxing but the teenager seemed to be a trigger for the poltergeist events. The SSPR has over a hundred members, from believers and open-minded enquirers to hard-nosed sceptics, dedicated to paranormal research in the UK, all of who share an interest in a scientific approach to paranormal experiences. The SSPR holds no corporate view on the paranormal; members are expected to make up their own minds about the evidence for para-normality. Nick Kyle, SSPR President, stated, “I think that it’s helpful for people to talk about their paranormal experiences and the SSPR also gives them opportunities, in informal discussion groups, to share and learn about experiences that they have not been able to explain.” If you believe that the paranormal doesn’t exist, then Nick may well agree with you. His conclusion is that, “It’s normal, for the people to whom it happens.” Prof. Archie Roy, who was an outstanding psychical researcher, said that, “There is an astonishingly impressive body of evidence that, to put it mildly, demolishes the widelyheld belief that a human being is merely a psycho-electro-chemical machine” Nick added, “If we use a narrow view of humanity that doesn’t include a ‘spiritual’ or extra-dimensional reality, then paranormal phenomena may appear and challenge that view and that can be frightening.” Looking to future events, the SSPR will be involved in the Scottish Paranormal Festival in Stirling next Halloween.

Toby arrived in our care through no fault of his own.
Simon is a lovely chap who came into our care through no fault of his own.
Toby is a little timid so would like a quiet house with no children or other animals and with someone who has time to spend bringing him out of his shell.
Ferrets are sociable animals so Simon will need a new home where he will get lots of attention from his new family or will be introduced to other ferrets for company.
This little guy would love a new home as he is quite unsettled in a kennel environment.
He is a happy little guy that likes to have a good run around and play session.
He would prefer to be a house cat, can you give this lovely guy all that he needs?
They are also very good escape artists and therefore any potential new owner would have to have a secure hutch and run.

The study will compare the foods eaten by dogs who have signs of illness, to those eaten by dogs who haven’t gotten sick, in order to determine if the jerky is really the culprit. A restored Douglas C-47 aircraft that originally had a lead role on D-Day in 1944 landed at Prestwick Airport on its way to Normandy to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of D-Day. By
Kaitlin McManus
The C-47 troop carrier, a.k.a. Whiskey 7, made its first European landing at Prestwick on Tuesday at at 4:50pm after crossing the Atlantic. What do we know about the Whiskey 7? It was built in 1943 for military use but never carried weapons, it was used to carry cargo. The C-47 planes were slow with a maximum cruising speed of about 150 mph, but the “Gooney Bird,” as she was known to her crews, could transport over 6000 lbs of men and equipment to and from the front lines, making it a critical aircraft in the Allied fight. In September 1943, Whiskey 7 left from Long Beach, California and was assigned USAAF serial number 4330652. From there she was assigned to the 12th Air Force, 316th Troop Carrier Group, 37th Troop Carrier Squadron, in North Africa where she carried troops and supplies in support of Allied operations there. She was flown to England in April 1944 and was assigned to the 9th Air Force in preparation for the Allied invasion of Northern Europe.
Whiskey 7 continued to fly throughout the war before she was decommissioned in July 1945 and sold to Penn Central Airlines where she was converted back to a passenger airliner. During her long career she was operated by several other airlines and was eventually sold in 1993. Whiskey 7 was donated to the 1941 Historical Aircraft Group (now the National Warplane Museum of New York) in 2005. She was then converted back to her wartime configuration and is now used to educate the public and honor those who served their country during World War II. She is painted in her D-Day color scheme, including the large W7- the squadron code for the 37th TCS. As part of a world tribute to the fallen and surviving soldiers of World War II, the National Warplane Museum is working alongside the French government to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day. Whiskey 7 will revisit Normandy, France, to commemorate the anniversary this summer. Departing from the National Warplane Museum on the 15th of May, Whiskey 7 and
the crew will traverse across the North-Atlantic. It will make seven stops en route to Normandy. Once again, Whiskey 7 will play a key role in D-Day, reenacting the same mission she carried out 70 years ago. Members of the volunteer paratrooper group, Liberty Jump Team, will be deployed from Whiskey 7 over original drop zones, including a town that has not seen a parachute drop since D-Day. “This has been a unique opportunity for us to thank our Veterans for their service and we’re honored to have been invited by the French government to be an integral part of their world celebration this June,” said Austin Wadsworth, National Warplane Museum President. “We’re grateful for the contributions we’ve received to make this two-year project a reality, however, we’re still looking for continued support.” Whiskey 7 is unique as it is one of the few C-47 aircrafts that is airworthy and remains active from the 37th troop carrier squadron that flew back in 1944. It was also the lead aircraft of the second wave of Allied troops,
directing hundreds of C-47s from the English Channel to France. This gives us an insight into the aircraft, but why is it landing in Prestwick? Prestwick Airport was an important part of WW11. When military aircraft was brought over from the USA, it was delivered to Prestwick and reportedly up to 300 aircrafts arrived every day. The tour took two years to plan, and the cost of restoring the aircraft cost $250,000.
Three Captains have flown the 13-ton aircraft from the USA since it left, and a total of 16 flight hours. Captain Naomi Wadsworth, Captain Chris Polhemus and Captain John Lindsay took it in turns to fly it over - from the USA via Canada, Greenland and Iceland before landing at Prestwick where it has been hosted by handling company Landmark Aviation. The Liberty Jump Team will parachute from the aircraft on the seventieth anniversary of D Day. The Liberty Jump Team is a charitable
non-profit organisation recognised as an educational and research entity. The work of the team is supported by donations from the general public and its members volunteering their time and resources as well. Captain Wadsworth flew the Dakota into Prestwick for Whiskey 7’s first European stop en route to Normandy. When asked what it means to her, she said: “We are preserving history, honouring our veterans and keeping history alive, so our mission is very important.”

BC Two has always been the home of great comedy – although they may not have been smiling at the time, we’d like to think that in retrospect the channel’s head honchos could even chuckle about the power cut that led to their launch night schedule being abandoned on April 20, 1964. Luckily, the channel quickly overcame that setback, and started making us laugh on purpose. So after programmes devoted to BBC Two’s role in pop and sports broadcasting, it’s only fair that its comedic output takes the spotlight this weekend, beginning with 50Years of BBC2 Comedy, Saturday, BBC2, 9pm.

As Adam Barker, Acting Controller of BBC Two, says: “From The Likely Lads, the very first comedy the channel showed in 1964, to more recent highlights including Rev, The Trip, Twenty Twelve and The Wrong Mans, BBC Two has a long and proud history of growing and supporting new comedy talent.” However, the channel hasn’t always been quite so good at celebrating its legacy. Many episodes of its earliest hits, including the aforementioned Likely Lads, and Peter Cook and Dudley Moore’s Not Only… But Also were wiped as a costsaving exercise. Fortunately, enough survived for them to be included in this retrospective.

PICK OF THE WEEK
Narrated by Joanna Lumley, it takes in everything from the edgy, cult comedies of Spike Milligan and The League of Gentlemen to crossover hits such as Fawlty Towers, The Office and Miranda. And the entertainment doesn’t just come from the clips as a who’s who of British comedy _ including Ricky Gervais, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Terry Jones, Vic and Bob, The Goodies, Ian Hislop and Prunella Scales – will be sharing a few memories. When it’s not encouraging us to laugh at iconic sitcoms, BBC
Two also has a proud tradition of poking fun at itself, as anyone who saw this year’s W1A can attest. There’s more self-deprecation in one of this weekend’s other retrospectives, Harry & Paul’s Story of the 2s, which is broadcast on Sunday, and sees Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse taking a decidedly irreverent look back at the channel’s history. As Harry explains: “BBC Two gave me my big solo break with Harry Enfield's Television Programme almost 25 years ago. They have been loyal to us over decades. We therefore felt it was only right that now we should stab BBC Two in the back.”

Simon Baker The Mentalist Channel 5, 9pm In the previous episode, after trying in vain to get Jane to admit how he feels about her, Lisbon decided to accept Pike’s invitation to move with him to Washington DC. As the series ends, she’s still in Texas, when a new lead in a cold case requires her to put her DC relocation plans on hold. Will Jane finally tell her he loves her, and if he does, what will be her response? Well, that would be telling. But we can reveal that Ballykissangel/ Trial & Retribution veteran Victoria Smurfit is among the guest stars. Fans may note that series seven was recently given a green light.

Ricky Gervais Derek Channel 4, 10pm Although we’re now reaching the end of the second series of this sitcom, it still feels odd that the man who brought us brash David Brent could also create one of the small screen’s loveliest characters. The whole programme champions the underdog, the folk we might ignore in the street – if we spot them at all. We even saw a softer side to the usually socially inept Kev a few weeks ago when he attempted to quit booze to land Broad Hill’s caretaker job. We’ll be cheering for him again this week when he stands up to the appalling Geoff.

Ann Barnes Meet the Police Commissioner Channel 4, 9pm Just two years ago, police forces up and down the country felt the biggest shakeup for 50 years when elections resulted in the appointment of 41 Police and Crime Commissioners – a venture which cost £75million, but strangely enough, resulted in the lowest voting turnout since the Second World War. Consequently, the small turnout meant that some obscure, perhaps ‘eccentric’ candidates were voted in. This Cutting Edge documentary hears from Ann Barnes, Police and Crime Commissioner for Kent, who was initially against the introduction of PCCs.

BJ Britt Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD Channel 4, 8pm There’s good news for Marvel fans. Not only has Agents of SHIELD been renewed for a second series, our own Hayley Atwell gets to reprise her role as Captain America’s love interest in the pending series Agent Carter, and following Ben Affleck’s turn as Daredevil in 2003, a TV version of Hell’s Kitchen’s blind crime fighter is also coming to the small screen. With a bit of luck, the latter should be on Netflix next year, but for now settle back and enjoy the season finale of AOS and Agent Coulson and his team attempt to fend off the HYDRA threat.

Lush – The Big Review!
The lovely people at Lush have brought back some of their most popular products from their discontinued Retro range made freshly in their new online “Kitchen”. Here is my review of three of their returning favourites...
Strawberry Feels Forever Massage Bar - £5.75 Shaped like a strawberry and smelling divine, I couldn’t wait to try this out. It smells like strawberry milkshake and because it is made with fresh strawberries, you don’t that horrible artificial ‘fake-fruit’ smell. It is made with
Fair Trade organic cocoa butter, Shea butter and olive oil which leaves skin super soft! It doesn’t immediately sink in which is great, so you don’t need to keep applying it whilst massaging, but you will need to wash it off afterwards. It warms up quickly and by the looks of it, will last a long time.
Sakura Bath Bomb £3.25 This cosmic looking bath bomb looked amazing, with what seems like little neon rocks on the top and flecks of fluorescent specks throughout it. It smells even better, with a strong citrus
smell, mixed with floral jasmine. When dropped in the bath it fizzed away and produced a nice foam.
Ice Blue Soap £3.10 The smell of the bright blue bar of soap hit me as soon as I opened the bag. The vapour of menthol immediately awoke my senses and I couldn’t wait to try it. The peppermint was invigorating and the fine sea salt left my skin nice and soft. Products are available online at www.lush.co.uk/ and in stores nationwide.
So how do you use it? The good thing is you just use it like any other oil, melt about a tablespoon in a frying pan and you’re good to go. It also gives off a delicious, light coconut taste, so it is ideal when cooking currys, Thai dishes or frying fish or chicken. You can use it as a substitute for butter when baking and also add it to smoothies. However, its uses don’t stop in the kitchen. It can also be used for a range of beauty treatments. Lather some on after shampooing hair and wrap hair in a towel for a deep conditioning treatment. Dab some on a cotton pad and it will remove make up. You can also use it as a body moisturiser and it will soothe chapped lips. The uses for it are endless! If you are looking to try coconut oil for yourself go for the raw oil, and organic if you can. It is available to buy it from most wholefood or health stores nationwide.
Love coconut? Try this! Odylique Organic Coconut Candy Scrub
£25 Love coconut? Try this yummy scrub that smells good enough to eat and leaves your skin feeling silky smooth. The scrub itself is great for a gentle exfoliation when applied to wet skin and a deep exfoliation when dry. Made with exfoliating poppy seeds, virgin coconut and cocoa butter, it is 100% natural.

PROPERTY Property prices in Scotland have risen by an average of around £6,500 in the last year, this is according to new figures released by LSL Property Services, this is the highest rise in Scottish property prices since October of 2010. The property market in Scotland is making an excellent recovery after the financial crash of 2008, with property prices having risen to only 2.4% below their 2008 peak. This rise is unique in the UK outside London, with the north of England only managing to get up to 8.4% below the 2008 peak.
current financial climate for Scottish property saying: “The average price in Scotland is now only £3,900below its pre-recession peak. The recovery in Scotland has now taken a stronger grip than in the northern most regions of England. As the independence vote looms on the near horizon and the debates become more ferocious, it will be interesting to note if this has any impact on current trends.”
Although the rise in property prices cannot be felt equally across Scotland, the area currently feeling most of the benefit in the property price surge is Inverclyde, just north of Glasgow, many are now commuting for work in the city from this idyllic locale.
“The Help to Buy scheme and buoyed demand from first-time buyers has been the catalyst spurring forward the Scottish market. Sustained growth is bedding down across the country and on an annual basis, average property prices have risen in two thirds of all areas of Scotland.”

Haunted hotel inspires Drive director to direct “The Bringing” Nicolas Winding Refn the director who critics love and hate in equal measure has been inspired to film a new horror movie after being inspired by the mysterious Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles. The Cecil Hotel, long plagued with rumours of dark spirits haunting the hotel, has been the subject of multiple murders, deaths, suicides and guests complaining of being choked in the night by an unknown force. The hotels most recent brush with tragedy was the unexplained death of Canadian tourist Elisa Lam, who was found at the bottom of a water tank on the roof of the building, two weeks later. Guests complained of the water flowing out the taps being dark and
Canadian tourist Elisa Lam
tasting awful, the police soon found Lam’s body, which had spent two weeks decomposing in the water tank The most shocking part of the story however, Elisa managed to get through multiple padlocked, alarmed doors, without setting off a single alarm or alerting anyone. Before her death, CCTV footage recorded her acting bizarrely in an elevator, appearing to talk to thin air, even gesturing with her hands in the direction of no-one. At one point it appeared she was hiding from an unknown entity. With CCTV failing to pick up anything or anyone on camera. Police suspected Lam was high on drugs, however after an autopsy was ordered and carried out, no drugs or alcohol were found in the toxicology reports.
Police reiterated the fact that its impossible to reach the roof without setting off alarms or opening fire exits. The hotel has experienced an incredibly dark history, with no more than two serial killers carrying out their horrific crimes while staying there. Night Stalker, Richard Ramirez the Satanist who murdered and mutilated 13 woman and Jack Unterweger who idolised Ramirez,
and set about emulating him with copycat killings. Previous to that in the 50’s and 60’s the hotel experienced a spate of suicides and murders. Local tour guide Richard Schave tried to play down the supernatural suspicions surrounding the Cecil Hotel “Its just a place where people who were really down on their luck
were going. These hotels are filled with people who are at the fringes of society, waiting to be integrated.” Nicolas Winding Refn is in advanced talks to direct “The Bringing” inspired by Elisa Lam’s unexplained death. To watch the video of Elisa Lam acting strangely in the elevator moments before her death, type Elisa Lam into You Tube.

Help to Buy scheme could be ‘pared back’ according to Clegg
The government backed Help to Buy scheme could be ‘pared back’ according to Deputy PM Nick Clegg, if the Bank of England believes the housing market is overheating. The Deputy PM has said that the Help to Buy scheme could be slowed depending on the Bank of England’s projections on the housing market, this comes after BoE Governor Mark Carney warned about letting the housing market get out of control again, instead suggesting that the market should rely in steady sensible rates of growth rather than another boom bust scenario. Mr Carney announced that the BoE was considering the provision of advice to the government on “changing the terms” of the Help to Buy scheme, in order to ensure the
stability of the housing market in the UK. Mr Carney has also said that there are not enough new homes being built to meet demand, further driving the boom in the market. PM David Cameron has agreed with Mr Carney and the BoE saying that they are “absolutely right” in saying that there are not enough new houses being built, though he believes that Help to Buy has been “extremely helpful” in encouraging new developments. The Help to Buy scheme was originally put in place by the government in order to encourage first time buyers to take a step onto the property ladder and increase growth in the post financial housing market which had stagnated after 2008. Letting agents to publish details of all fees In an announcement this week by the government, letting agents will now be required to publish full details of all fees and charges under new plans approved by the government. This announcement has came after the moniker ‘generation rent’ has became the go to phrase for describing people in their in their 20’s and 30’s, as it has become increasingly more difficult for people within this age range who are not already home owners to get onto the property ladder despite government assistance. The plans which are intended to protect both landlords and tenants from potentially ruinous hidden fees which some less reputable letting agencies are guilty of charging without prior warning, have been largely welcomed by the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA). ARLA has been campaigning for more regulation and transparency for the industry, as
ARLA and its members remit is to encourage a more transparent and fairer letting industry. Labour has called for a blanket ban on renters fees, which can run into hundreds of pounds, such a ban was proposed by Labour but failed to pass. Ian Potter, Managing Director of ARLA reacted to this saying: “Labour’s amendment was ill thought through and its failure to pass illustrates this. I’m glad that the majority of MPs recognise that a ban on letting agent fees will only lead to an increase in rents, as landlords and agents seek to achieve returns. Fees are not arbitrary or unnecessary, they represent a business cost that those tabling the amendment failed to recognise. ARLA’s call, as ever, is for wholesale regulation of the market to ensure fair and transparent practices for all consumers, landlords and agents alike.” By

Less homeowners A billionaires playhouse by 2032 Its been called a billionaires dream home, a place where the super rich can just get away from it all.
In a report released recently it has been announced that more than 50% percent of all homes will be rented by 2032.
Where is this fabulous place? Monaco? New York? Some other fantastic exotic destination? Nope its situated in “Auld Reekie”, Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city and its expected to smash the £5million pounds record set in 2007.
If the current trend continues to follow its projected route it will be the first time since the 1970’s that more people in Britain are renting than owning their home. Since 2007 the private rented sector has grown from 14% percent to 18% percent while at the same time people owning their own home has dropped significantly from 60% percent. It can be argued due to banks and building societies being more prudent in permitting mortgages for fear of people failing to keep up payments, statistics will show that less people are owning homes, however when banks inevitably start lending again, house owning will again come into vogue. The report released by Intermediary Mortgage Lenders Association
also showed that social renting has plummeted. England, Scotland, and Wales saw the average time for a house on the market fall, with Home.co.uk reporting the North West to be the most improved area over the last month, with days on the market falling from 146 to 117. The average day for a house in both England and Wales to be on the market is 90 days.
Rory Ballantyne of Ballantynes Estate Agents, charged with marketing the property alongside Sothesbys. said “We would expect to pass through that £5million figure and beyond by a significant margin.” So far there is little information about the sellers and its not currently known whether they are based in Scotland. Craigcrook Castle seems like an unlikely city pad but with the relative ease in which you can reach Edinburgh City Centre from the property’s grounds (three miles). When you add the security and peace and quiet that four and a half acres of land can provide for you, its easy to
understand why the property wont be available on the market for very long. Craigcrook Castle has a long and prestigious history, erected in the sixteenth century, some of its most illustrious guests have been Charles Dickens, Hans Christian Andersen and Sir Walter Scott amongst others. Following an invitation from literary critic Francis Jeffrey, some of the greatest writers in history spent time staying in the castle grounds. Lord Jeffrey also founded the Edinburgh Review.
Mr Ballantyne said of the 9,000 square feet property “The lure is the possibility of owning a castle without having thousands of acres of upkeep. It really could be described almost as a lock-up and leave and is therefore great for someone who has houses elsewhere.” The estate agent continued “it would be perfect for a owner with a romantic notion of a historic house but is still in relatively close proximity to the city centre. It could attract celebrities and those who value their privacy.”

Convertible for coppers Summer, every motorists favourite time of the year.
With mercifully dry roads, green fields, tree lined avenues and windswept coastal routes a chance to enjoy your time behind the wheel is finally here. For many motor enthusiasts, especially in Scotland with it’s as the weatherman puts it, ‘inclement weather’, a convertible seems a little pointless and to many, a toy for the rich and famous to enjoy while the rest of us stick to the more conventional fair of diesel commuters. However it doesn’t have to be this way, with so many fantastic options on the table for low cost convertible motoring, those of us who yearn to feel the wind through our hair don’t have to put on the leathers or god forbid the lycra and joint the b-road weekend cyclist brigade. Throughout the 90’s and early 2000’s many manufacturers had jumped on the coat tails of the Mazda MX5’s success, while the little Mazda
remains the unbeaten champion and obvious choice for cheap summer convertible motoring, many of the decent examples have started to command a more serious price tag. In this article, I’d like to make a few more unconventional suggestions and hopefully provide some surprising revelations as to what you can get these days for under £1500 in time to catch our fortnight of sunny weather.
BMW Z3
The first bargain roadster I’m going to look at may come as a surprise to many, in that it’s now within budget for use as a cheap summer toy. The BMW Z3, was one of the 90’s best known and most popular roadsters thanks to a certain Mr Bond making use of it in GoldenEye. The Z3 is now the discerning motor
enthusiasts choice in the bargain basement roadster sector. With a fantastic choice of engines that can cater to your budget, the Z3 has a lot going for it, but with prices as low as they are now, it would be sacrilegious not to pick up an example with the legendary BMW straight six for that perfect mix of seamless power delivery and reliability, which can only be afforded by the larger of the engine choices. While not the obvious choice for all out performance motoring, the Z3 while a capable B-road thrasher is more suited to gentlemanly pursuits, think taking the West Highland Way and staying in the more upmarket hotels while experiencing the time between rest points in comfort and style.

Fiat Barchetta
Next up is the perky little Fiat Barchetta, while I can already hear many of you drawing breath through your teeth at the thought of picking up something from this much maligned Italian manufacturer, the Barchetta was one of the better examples of this era in Italian engineering, with fantastic looks and a style which no other car can match, handling which just shouldn’t be possible in a front wheel drive car and a rev happy little engine that can put a smile on anyone’s face the Barchetta seems almost too good to be true. Unfortunately it is, since it was only offered in left hand drive format, it doesn’t quite suit anyone who doesn’t intend taking a trip to the continent for a summer driving holiday. However, despite this major handicap, for thos who are brave enough to pick up something with the steering wheel on the wrong side, the rewards are numerous. Inside, the Barchetta has a first class interior, swathed in a selection of coloured leathers depending on your taste, (In this hacks opinion the red leather is the most striking). The Barchetta really is a special car to be in and be seen in, since no-one can match the Italians for style and most certainly not the Germans or Japanese who favour a more sombre black and silver or black on black scheme for their interiors. On top of the top notch interior, there’s that little 1.8 16v engine, which is a hold over from the Punto Sporting of the same era, this little power plant can haul the Barchetta up to 60 in a surprisingly short amount of time, coming in at just over 8.5 seconds from a stand still, so for anyone willing to take the plunge there’s really something special to be found in the Barchetta.
At this time of year, accidents involving deer are more frequent, with the adolescent youngsters leaving their mothers in search of their own territories. Jamie Hammond, Scottish Natural Heritage’s South Scotland deer management officer, said:

Toyota MR2
Next up is our first Japanese offering for cheap summer motoring, the fantastic yet poorly received Toyota MR2 third generation. The last in a long line of Toyota two seater roadsters, which wasn’t revived until recently with the FR-S, the last of the MR2’s could be attributed with the death of Toyota’s love affair with the small roadster, with poor worldwide sales thanks to it’s love it or hate it styling which seemed to lack direction, channelling the spirit of the Porsche 9/11 up front and Ferrari in the rear. However, questionable styling choices aside, there’s lot’s to love about the last of the MR2’s. First of all is the handling, the designers were so utterly obsessed with the handling and maintaining a the perfect weight distribution that they effectively removed the boot, which was positioned over the front wheel’s. This allowed the MR2 to become known across the world as one of the most perfectly balanced and consequently one of the best handling cars of all time. This well sorted chassis was mated to a 1.8l L4 16v engine which while quite small was perfectly suited to the car, alongside it’s well made 6 speed gearbox. Although a prospective bargain motorist will struggle to find many examples coming in at under the £1500 budget, for those that do some seriously rewarding motoring is available for a small outlay and unlike some of the other entries on this list., repairs and general maintenance wont break the bank thanks to cheap parts.
Dearie Me, 7000 collisions between motorists and deer per year Scotland TranServ, on behalf of Transport Scotland is appealing to drivers across Ayrshire to keep alert for the presence of young deer running onto our trunk roads.

“Many people think most accidents with deer occur on remote Highland roads; in fact 70% occur on trunk roads or motorways. Accidents are particularly high in the spring and autumn because dusk and the peak commuting times coincide. Deer are more likely to be feeding near, or on,
deer are more active.”
“We would advise motorists to slow down and watch for deer crossing in front of traffic. Be particularly alert if you are driving around curves or near heavily-forested areas where deer can suddenly appear before you have time to brake.”
Latest statistics reveal that there are 7000 collisions between motorists and deer every year in Scotland, with more than 60 of these resulting in injury to humans. Through injury and damage to vehicles this is costing the Scottish economy around £7million annually.
Carol Walker, Scotland TranServ’s Environment Manager said: “This is an important time of year for young deer, when they finally leave their mothers and start to look for their own territory. They often find themselves wandering onto our trunk roads because they don’t have much of the necessary wisdom or experience to avoid them at that stage. The time of greatest risk is in the late evening, from sun down to the early hours of the morning when the
I may have to cheat on my self imposed rule of £1500 for a budget roadster for this choice, as I wasn’t able to find any for below that threshold, however I did find a couple of examples for just north of £2000, so I’m making the decision to live a little and go wild with the final entry in this list with something special. Yet another entry from the land of the rising sun on this list, the S2000 is considered by many to be the best roadster ever to come out of Japan. With beautiful classic roadster styling, rear wheel drive, superb handling and one of the finest applications of the VTEC engine system ever seen outside of the NSX. The S2000 was the first car that could seriously challenge the eponymous MX-5, with more power and an arguably better chassis, the S2000 was Honda’s last foray into rear wheel drive territory, which it abandoned completely after the S2000’s demise in 2005. Hailed by many as the car that could knock the MX-5 of it’s perch as the supreme drop top roadster, the S2000 aimed for more power and a more capable chassis, which is purported to be able to take even more speed into the bends without losing composure, although it has been accused of biting back rather hard if who ever’s behind the wheel does run out of talent and road. The S2000 was something special, which many enthusiasts would love to see revived, even this one who generally isn’t a fan of Japanese cars, if I was searching for some convertible excitement and refinement on a budget, I’d definitely stretch to get myself one of these and head north, to the unsurpassed roads of the Highlands.
Clarity from DVLA on new car tax regulations
road verges at this time.
In Ayrshire this is most prevalent on the A78, A77 and A76.

Malcolm Shanks, Scotland TranServ’s Operations Manager added: “This isn’t just something that is reserved for the Highlands, more and more across south west Scotland we are hearing of accidents involving young deer. If you are driving near woodland, or past a large estate then please be vigilant. Even roadside barriers aren’t a hindrance for these animals, they can easily clear such hurdles. Hitting one of these young deer could not only injure it, but potentially injure you and cause significant damage to your vehicle.”
The DVLA have recently clarified exactly what’s going to happen in future when you’re taxing, selling or buying a car after the tax disc is abolished on October first of this year. First off, what will come as a relief to many, the old circular paper tax disc will no longer need to be displayed in your windscreen, your tax will now be passed through your registration plate, much like your insurance status. This will at least solve the headache and anguish of having applied for a new tax disc and waiting for it in the post before you can take your pride and joy out onto the road again without running the risk of being hit with a fine from plod. The most important change to the taxation guidelines are in fact when it comes to buying and selling a vehicle, since road tax will no longer be
transferable between parties, buyers will now have to purchase road tax when they buy the car otherwise it will be illegal for you to drive a new purchase home after handing over the cash to the seller without also handing over more money to the powers that be. For those of you that are now a little worried about selling your car before the tax is up and losing out, don’t worry. There will be a new automated process for tax refunds, which in theory will issue a refund as soon as the car is registered to have changed owners or has been scrapped. However, it will be interesting to see how smoothly this new system works once it goes live in October. By

World Cup stadiums struggling to be ready for grand opening
Fifa bigwigs prepare to look away, with less than a month to go before the grand opening of the biggest footballing spectacle in the world, the stadiums deemed necessary to host the World Cup are still not fully ready. As Manchester and Scottish legend Sir Alex Ferguson once famously quoted “its squeaky bum time.” and it certainly is for FIFA. With the World Cup a mere three weeks away, FIFA would have hoped to have completed almost all safety checks and preparations for the tournament. However Brazilian officials are five months behind schedule and with the stadiums failing to be fully finished, control has been
passed over to FIFA and the Local Organising Committee.
place, a lot more people would have been protected from the rain.”
Worringly, Brazilian organisers were made aware of issues with the structure of the roofing being unfinished and following a deluge of rainfall in Sau Paulo’s Itaquerao stadium the fans were forced to run for cover.
There have been others problems as well, such as the 3G network being flooded, meaning that no phone calls could be made from the stadium.
Even more worrying is that the roofing wont be finished until after the World Cup meaning that fans will face the risk of being drenched when the stadium is used during the tournament. Local organisers have reiterated that “it was never a requirement to have all seats covered at World Cup stadiums, but if the glass covers were already in
With workers having fallen to their death during construction, mass protests against the tournament, the ongoing fear of organised gangs targeting tourists, stadiums failing to be properly vetted at full capacity, FIFA don’t have their ills to seek, however it has been promised that the prestigious tournament will run smoothly from opening to closing. A pamphlet due to be issued by Brazilian embassies and consulates has warned visitors not to react,
Haggas scoops Braveheart at Hamilton Park “Dare to achieve” was a game winner of the ginger grouseBbraveheart stakes as he landed last night’s listed handicap at Hamilton park by a neck from rawaki who was third in the corresponding race 12 months ago. Trained by William Haggas and ridden by Graham Lee, the 7-2 victor was running for the first time since being gelded during the winter. Lee said: “I’ve never ridden him before but he switched off good. He picked up when I asked him and he stuck on well - he might well turn out to be a progressive type.” The opening juvenile event has been win by some decent horses in recent years and
Billyoakes could be another as he romped for victory for Mick Channon and Graham Lee. The winning jockey said: “He certainly won like a good horse.” Lee went on to complete a 100-1 treble as Mick Channon- trained filly Divine took the Ford Windows William Wallace Handicap by three-quarters of a length from Red Pike. Carluke-based Keith Dalgleish saddled a winner at his local track when Wee Frankie’s made a winning debut for Phillip Makin in the Billy Leslie Open Maiden Stakes. Dalgleish said: “We quite like him and it wasn’t too much of a surprise as he has been working well at home.”

Tigers under strain 3 in a row Lennon quits Celtic
The new speedway season is now well and truly under way, with Glasgow Tigers having now tasted battle in each of this season’s Premier League competitions.
scream or argue if they are robbed as it may provoke robbers into further violence or even murder. The common Brazilian term for robbery that leads to murder is latrocinios. With Brazil having one of the highest murder rates in the world, tourists are also warned “not to flaunt valuable objects, to be careful at night, make sure you’re always with people and be vigilant when checking for people following you.” FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke upon beginning his tour of the twelve World Cup stadiums said “At the
moment I am here to see that the finishing touches for the FIFA World Cup operation are completed in time for kick off.” He continued “We will be focussing primarily on ensuring that all is in place for the 32 teams, the approximate three million fans watching the matches live in 12 arenas and the billions watching the event on TV.”
Tigers failed to progress from their League Cup qualifying group, however they remain in the Knock Out Cup and have made a respectable start to their league campaign having won their opening two home fixtures. That bright start will be severely tested this Sunday however as, for the third time already this season, Tigers will face their fierce rivals Edinburgh Monarchs at Ashfield (start time 3pm). Whilst the Tigers have had a stuttering season so far, made worse by injury to key riders, the Monarchs have yet to taste defeat home or away in some 13 matches. With this Sunday’s visitors flying high and at full strength, the home side will look to recover from a hard fought home cup defeat at the hands of Workington last Sunday, and are still without star French ace Dimitri Berge who has returned to his France base to recuperate from injuries sustained a month ago in a pile up at Ashfield. Being a rider short, and employing the rider replacement facility to cover, has had mixed fortunes for the Tigers and it does begin to take its toll on other team members and their equipment. It is believed that the club are searching
AGAINST ALL ODDS 24th of May not only sees the Champions league final, but also sees the Irish 2000 Guineas take place at the Curragh. With 15mm of rain falling on the track, changing the course to soft conditions, this will suit the hot favourite Kingman. Ryan Moore takes the ride on the Sir Michael Stoute trained horse once again, the odds on favourite is my tip for the race. I fancy Aiden O’Briens War Command, saddled by his son Joseph to follow Kingman home, and at 6/1 is good each way value. Antepost betting is open for The Investec Oaks at Epsom on the 6th of June and I would take advantage of the, generous, early odds of 9/1 about the Dermot Weld trained Filly Tarfasha. Fresh from a convincing win in the Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Blue Wind Stakes, the Filly is sure to go well. Betting is also open for the holy grail of football, The World Cup in Brazil. Brazil are rightly favourites on home soil and at 3/1 look good value. However the Belgian team look like strong outsiders, boasting a squad valued at over 200 million, and at 20/1 are worth a small each way punt. With squads already announced, and no fresh injuries I see these odds shortening once the tournament starts so get in early for good value. In the more immediate Future, as mentioned previously, it’s the Champions League final. With Real only finishing 3rd in La Liga this season, I fancy them to topple a strong, and confident from their recent La Liga triumph, Athletico side. Take both teams to score and Real to win at odds of 3/1. Singles: 2000 Guineas - Kingman 4/6, War Command 6/1 (each way). Investec oaks - Tarfasha 9/1 (each way). World Cup - Brazil 3/1, Belgium 20/1 (each way). Champions League Final – Real Madrid and BTTS 3/1 By

Photo Ian Adams for a new rider who can be introduced on a 28 day contract pending the hoped for return to the side of Berge. Frustratingly for fans of the Allied Vehicles Tigers it is the up and down form of their other riders which is not helping the team to perform optimally. Tigers No.1, German international, Kevin Wolbert was expected to be one of the league’s top men this season, however he has flattered to deceive so far and his actual point scoring is well below realistic expectations. There are signs that he may on the rise, however Tigers really do need this to happen this weekend - as well as a fighting display from every team member - if Tigers are to get close to pulling off what would be a shock victory over the Monarchs.
WIN! For your chance to win a pair of tickets to see the Glasgow Tigers at Ashfield Stadium on 1st June answer this simple question.
Who will the Tigers be facing off against on 1st June in their home fixture?
There’s no let up for the Tigers next week as they head to the pacey East of England Showground to face a strong Peterborough side on Tuesday, before heading to Armadale Stadium next Friday with the daunting task of tackling the Monarchs in the return league fixture. Tigers then welcome 2012 league champions Scunthorpe to Ashfield Stadium on Sunday, June 1st and will hope that fortunes, injury situation and rider form will have sufficiently improved to allow them to bag some more league points before the season begins to slip away. Three title winning champion Neil Lennon has stepped down as Celtic manager fuelling rumours of discourse with the Peter Lawwell and the rest of the Parkhead board. It follows days of furious speculation in regards to the extremely popular managers future. Lennon has guided Celtic to the last sixteen of the Champions League and the group stage twice, helped oversee a profitable period in Celtic’s financial history. With rumours of Lennon reaching the Norwich three man short list and also admiring glances from the direction of West Brom. The Celtic board would have struggled to convince Lennon his future lay at Celtic Park.

With a lack of competition, and the prospect of seeing his title winning side sold to the highest bidder, it was only a matter of time before Lennon grew tired and chose a new career path. Lennon has faced many battles during his time as Celtic manager. Including
several legal battles, however Scottish football will be a quieter place without him. Celtic legend and former Lennon team mate Henrik Larsson has been installed as shock favourite to succeed Lennon as Celtic manager by bookmakers. Larsson is currently managing Falkenberg in the Swedish Premier Division it might still seem risky to appoint him to such a high profile job and risk tarnishing his illustrious career with the Scottish champs. Parkhead sources are adamant however that Lennon has not quit due to budgets or transfer targets. It brings to mind Georgios Samaras’ comments on the final day of the season in which he said “I didn’t want to leave but the board never offered me a contract.” Lennon was known to be a huge fan of Samaras, and with Fraser Forster expected to leave after the World Cup and a host of other players in the shop window. Had Neil Lennon had enough and decided to quit while ahead?

Scottish Juniors Cup Final show-piece set to feature Glenafton vs Hurlford United Kilmarnock’s Rugby Park stadium will and Hurlford do battle for the right to call play host to two of the most popular themselves champions of the Scottish Junior teams on June 1st as Glenafton Junior Cup.
With both teams having a rivalry thanks to the close geography between the two (both hailing from East Ayrshire) the final has the added impetus of being a cracking local derby. Both teams will be hoping for a strong turnout from their fans and if recent games are anything to go by it is sure to be a blood and thunder event. With both teams having played each other at the end of April and Hurlford coming away with a 2-0 win, Glenafton’s manager Tommy Bryce will be expecting a reaction from his team. With it being a single, all to play for match, the teams will be putting everything on the line and going for glory. It is well known that former Hurlford forward Aaron Connolly currently plays for Glenafton and in their previous match there was four former Glenafton players in the Hurlford lineup, giving the approaching cup final an extra zing. With the match kicking off at 16:05 on June 1st and the crowd expected to be in the thousands thanks to the rivalry that exists between the two, its sure to be a firecracker of a match.
