Glasgow’s Theatre Royal is the venue for Kevin Bridges: Live at the Referendum, Saturday, BBC1, 10.20pm as Kevin welcomes Hal Cruttenden, a veteran of Mock the Week who picked up a Best Newcomer nomination at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards in 2002 . He’s joined by deadpan funnyman Jack Dee; one of Glasgow’s most successful, and controversial comedians, Frankie

Boyle, and Kerry Godliman. The latter, who is better known as Hannah in Ricky Gervais sitcom Derek, has been a TV regular for more than a decade. Doctor Who Doctor Who BBC1, 7.30pm You may believe a police box can travel in time and space, or that a renegade alien can regenerate several times into different people, but the fact he has never encountered Robin Hood in the show’s 51-year history? Well that’s a more difficult pill to swallow. However, all that changes this week when the Doctor and Clara pay a visit to Sherwood and try to save Nottingham from intergalactic forces of evil. Tom Riley and the ever reliable Ben Miller guest star in a Mark Gatissscripted adventure, while Clara’s dress should leave a few fans’ hearts racing that bit faster.

Charlie Brooker. What became of him, eh?,” she laughs. Kerry admits she was fascinated by comedy from an early age.“I did watch quite a lot of stand-up as a kid,” she explains.“I’m always quite fascinated by these articles by other comics who say, ‘They didn’t come to it ‘til they were adults’, whereas I did. I even went to gigs with my mum and dad when I was a kid. I remember seeing Billy Connolly and Victoria Wood.“Mum and dad took me to shows when… I wasn’t even a teenager. I always liked it and knew what it was, but I didn’t know

how to get into it.” Kerry went to drama school, which gave her “the guts to admit that I wanted to do stand-up and had a crack at that. And it’s quite nice now that I’m fortunate enough to be able to do both.” Of course it remains to be seen how she fares at this event, but one comedian who is bound to generate plenty of sparks is Boyle. Once described by Dara O Briain as ‘The dark heart of Mock the Week,’ he used his stint on that panel game as a springboard for his own series, Tramadol Nights. That met with a mixed reception from the critics, while one alleged gag left Ofcom’s switchboard lit up like a Christmas tree. The controversy didn’t seem to affect ticket sales.

PICK OF THE WEEK

Doctor Who BBC1, 7.30pm You may believe a police box can travel in time and space, or that a renegade alien can regenerate several times into different people, but the fact he has never encountered Robin Hood in the show’s 51-year history? Well that’s a more difficult pill to swallow. However, all that changes this week when the Doctor and Clara pay a visit to Sherwood and try to save Nottingham from intergalactic forces of evil. Tom Riley and the ever reliable Ben Miller guest star in a Mark Gatissscripted adventure, while Clara’s dress should leave a few fans’ hearts racing that bit faster.

When drugs first hit it was like an atomic bomb. “But drug addicts are still shooting up in the centre of Glasgow, in 21st century Scotland, and its outrageous that this kind of thing is still going on.” Currently the biggest danger in Scotland and Glasgow in particular, is the threat of “legal highs” and the re-emergence of the killer party drug ecstasy, or pills masquerading under the pretence of ecstasy tablets. On August 22nd Police Scotland launched a crackdown called Operation Redwall. In the last couple of years there have been several ecstasy related deaths, mainly through consumption of “Mortal Kombat” or last year “Green Rolex” stamped tablets. The highest profile death being sixteen year old, Regane MacColl who died after taking a tablet whilst in Glasgow’s Arches nightclub. Mr Pearson also spoke of the diminishing purity of drugs such as cocaine or heroin “The purity is far lower than south of the border.

Graeme Pearson

They’re that greedy. “It gets cut to bits. So you’re getting heroin and cocaine that can have 7% per cent purity. In Scotland you’re lucky if you get out of single percentage figures.” “Elsewhere they wouldn’t even buy that stuff.” Mr Pearson finished.

Three officers who perished in the Clutha helicopter tragedy have officially been added to the Scottish Police Memorial. Pilot David Traill and police constables Tony Collins and Kirsty Nelis perished when the Eurocopter they were travelling in crashed through the roof of the Clutha bar in Glasgow in November 29th last year. The three officers were added to the Scottish Police Memorial at a service in Tulliallan Police College, Fife on Wednesday. A total of ten people died in the tragedy at the Clutha pub last year. The service was attended by the Princess Royal and Police Scotland Chief Constable Sir Stephen House. It has been a decade since the memorial was established, in honour of all the fallen officers,

Tony Collins who died in the line of duty. There are 255 names etched on the memorial with many dating back generations. The earliest date written on the memorial being more than 200 years ago. Sir Stephen House said. “Police officers are committed to serving their local communities, protecting the public and keeping people safe. “The officers we are commemorating today (Wednesday) made an important contribution to the communities they served. “It is right that we should honour them and that their names be added to the Scottish Police Memorial, a fitting reminder to us all of their contribution to the service and to Scotland. Our thoughts, as always, with their families and friends.” By

Whisky set to complete its journey to space and back

www.glasgow-news.com

Huge operation starts to distribute athletes’ furniture to city families A massive operation is under way to collect over 60,000 items of furniture used by Commonwealth Games athletes and distribute it to vulnerable families.

In 2011, the Ardbeg distillery on Islay sent a vial of unmatured malt, along with particles of charred oak, into space – to the International Space Station in a cargo spacecraft. Three years on, the whisky is set to return to earth on September 12th when a rocket containing the sample lands in Kazakhstan. It is hoped it will give scientists an idea of how the whiskey and oak particles interact with each other at almost zero gravity. An identical sample has been waiting at the Islay distillery and the two will be reunited in a laboratory in Houston, Texas for comparison between the earth and space aged whiskys. The vial has been orbiting Earth at 17,227mph – 15 times a day – for just

under three years. Dr Bill Lumsden, Ardbeg’s director of distilling and whisky creation, said: “Ardbeg is known for taking risks in its development of some of the most coveted whiskies in the world, so it is fitting that it is the first distillery ever in space. We are now close to the end, close to finding answers to something previously unknown which is truly exciting. “This is one small step for man but one giant leap for whisky, and the team hope to uncover how flavours develop in different gravitational conditions – findings which could revolutionise the whisky-making process. “We hope to shine new light on the effect of gravity on the maturation process but who knows where it will lead us? It could be to inifity and beyond.” By

GHA, part of Wheatley Group, has begun moving the furniture – including sofas, beds and wardrobes – from the Glasgow 2014 Athletes’ Village in Dalmarnock to storage facilities. It’s estimated it will take over 2500 return trips to complete what is one of the biggest flittings Scotland has ever seen. Once all the furniture has been collected and catalogued, Wheatley Group will begin distributing it directly to tenants in and around Glasgow who may be struggling to furnish their homes. That will include not just GHA tenants but also Cube and Loretto customers which are both part of Wheatley. Items which have been moved out of the Village into storage are now also available for city-based Registered Social Landlords and community groups with some already collecting items to support families in need in their communities. A showhome has been set up on the Wyndford Estate in Maryhill, which is owned by Cube, where tenants,

landlords and community groups can view the furniture. GHA Chair Gordon Sloan said: “We know many tenants are struggling to make ends meet in the current economic climate and we’re pleased this furniture has been made available to help people furnish their homes. “The amount of furniture being uplifted from the Village is way beyond our expectations and, while this means this is a huge operation, it means many thousands of people will benefit. It is a very tangible way in which the Commonwealth Games has left behind a legacy for the people of Glasgow.” The furniture was donated to GHA by the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee and RGS Ltd, the Official Furniture Provider for the Games. Among the items are wardrobes and

bedside tables, beds, sofas and bean bags as well as smaller items such as pedal bins, cushions and clothes horses. The furniture was used in the accommodation which became home for the 6,500 athletes and officials during the Commonwealth Games in July and early August. Wheatley’s Neighbourhood Services Leader Jacqueline Norwood said: “Once we have finished collecting all the furniture we will be ready to start delivering it to our customers later in September. “Our housing officers are talking with tenants and identifying those who would really benefit from this kind of support. “We are also working with others, particularly housing associations and community groups in the city, so that their customers can benefit too.”

Man arrested over independence votes ‘for sale’ Police arrested a 28 year old man in connection with a referendum ballot paper being advertised as for sale on the online auction site eBay. Police Scotland announced the man had been arrested in the Drumchapel area of Glasgow. The Electoral Commission has said the selling and buying of votes is illegal and could come with serious penalties, such as, a year in prison or a “substantial” fine. The man was reported to the procurator fiscal in relation to an alleged contravention of Schedule 7 of the Scottish Independence Referendum Act. A spokeswoman for the Electoral Commission has said they have made an agreement with eBay to remove any listings that advertised ballot papers for sale and that they would be referred to police. An investigation has been launched by police after a number of ballots appeared on eBay ahead of the referendum later in the month. By

Scotland’s largest health board refer obese to Weight Watchers NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) have announced they send people who are severely obese to commercial company Weight Watchers as part of a two-year pilot scheme where they will pay for membership fees.

The move has been criticised by some as an example of privatisation, but NHSGGC have cited the success of the Weight Watchers model as the main reason for the scheme. A statement for the health board said: “Following a full tendering process we have awarded a contract to Weight Watchers to provide community-based weight management services as part of a two-year pilot project. “People identify with Weight Watchers and evidence shows that their model is one which works. We will carry out a full evaluation of this work at the end of the pilot in two years.” Glasgow is not the only health board working with Weight Watchers, with NHS Tayside and NHS Grampian also making use of their services. A study has shown the success people using Weight Watchers have had, with 33% of almost 10,000 people referred to Weight Watchers losing at least 5% of their body weight.

Head of programme and public health for Weight Watchers UK, Zoe Griffiths, said: “Weight Watchers has been supporting local health bodies and providing successful weight management on referral services since 2005, and has worked with over 100 public health and NHS organisations across the UK. “With the Scottish Health Survey reporting a significant increase in the proportion of adults who are obese (from 17.2% in 1995 to 26.1% in 2012), Weight Watchers recognises the importance of delivering services to help people manage their weight and are committed to supporting and motivating people to change their lifestyles for good.” By

Punter set to collect £1 Million if Scotland says no

One man in England has staked a staggering £800,000 on the outcome of the independence referendum at bookmaker William Hill. The punter is convinced the result will be a No – and is set to collect just under £1 million if he is proved correct. The unnamed man – thought to be a middle-aged businessman – has placed the bet in three instalments at a south west London branch of William Hill. Initially staking £400,000 at odds of 1/4, he added £200,000 at 1/6 after the first televised debate between Alex Salmond and Alistair Darling and a further £200,000 at 1/5 last weekend. William Hill spokesman Graham

Sharpe said: “This gentleman’s stake of £600,00 was already a record for political betting, but his latest ‘investment’ as he calls it, takes his total wager up to £800,000 – the biggest amount ever gambled on the outcome of a political event.” William Hill have now taken nearly £2 million in bets on the outcome of the referendum. Slimmers conquer 5k for cancer charity

showed people just how motivating being part of a group like ours can be. Every penny raised will go towards an amazing cause – helping Cancer Research UK to fund pioneering, lifesaving research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of all cancers. One in three people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, and research has shown that many types of cancer are more common in people who are overweight. Cancer touches so many people’s lives and at Slimming World we’re determined to do anything we can to help people lead healthier lives in whatever way possible, that’s why I’m so pleased that my Slimming World group got right behind this event and encouraged others to do the same.”

Glasgow’s east end slimmers raised almost £1,000 for a leading cancer charity when they held a Slimming World does Race for Life Event at Tollcross Park on Saturday 9th August 2014. The women and men, who have lost a combined weight of around 60st, are all members of the various Slimming World groups in the east end and held their own 5k event to raise money for Cancer Research UK, the organisation’s charity partner throughout 2014. The groups welcomed the people of the local

groups with the east end to join in, and saw around 40 people take part, along with lots of spectators who supported the entrants across the finish line. The group’s race was part of a wider national event running across all Slimming World groups between July 21st and August 3rd. The race was not competitive, and those taking part could choose the distance they’d like to cover. The various consultants who run Slimming World groups every week at various locations in Parkhead, Shettleston, Bridgeton, Tollcross and

other areas in the east end members loved holding their own Slimming World does Race for Life event. They said: “It was a fantastic event with a real feel-good atmosphere. We saw young, old, male and female participants enter the event, with a range of different abilities and fitness levels. Entrants could run, walk, cycle or skate across the finish line – whatever they wanted – as long as they crossed the finish line we didn’t mind at all! They continued: “I’m so pleased with how much we raised for Cancer Research UK and I think the event

The aim of Slimming World does Race for Life is to raise money for charity while raising awareness about the benefits of getting active, including increasing energy levels, reducing stress, building self-esteem, improving health and helping to maintain a healthy weight. Having an active lifestyle also reduces the risk of developing a range of health conditions including some types of cancer. Slimming world member Fran Mclean who has lost 3 stone says “It was incredible to see so many member who have lost several stones compete

and take part in honour of loved ones, family members and friends. It’s a cause very close to everyone’s heart and each and every member found the event a heart-warming and touching experience. I used to really struggle with exercise, and found it really daunting taking those first steps to becoming more active. With Slimming World I learnt that the key is to start small and find something that you enjoy doing, and I’ve found that’s the best way to keep active and lose weight at the same time. There’s no rule that says being active has to involve a gym or running shorts – walking to collect my children from school or hitting the dance floor on a night out is enough to compliment my weight loss beautifully. I definitely wouldn’t have entered a distance race before I found Slimming World, but since losing weight I’m feeling much healthier, happier and more confident – I’m so proud of myself and I know my friends and family are too.” For more information about Glasgow’s East End Slimming World groups contact Consultant AnnMarie on 01415733580 or visit or website www.slimmingworld.com

Best of the West festival returns with fresh talent The Best of the West festival returns to the stunning grounds of Scotland’s iconic Inveraray Castle with a two day celebration of traditional music and family fun on 13-14th September.

Only an hour and a half’s drive away from Glasgow and with plenty of bus packages on offer, the event is perfect for day trippers. The festival will have a Scottish feast for you to choose – from the freshest Loch Fyne oysters to Real Mackay Stovies, delicate Colonsay wildflower honey to Inverawe Smokehouse salmon. There will also be the Loch Fyne Whisky Bar where whisky lovers will be spoilt for choice with an impressive blend of over 17 of the area’s finest distilleries, including Auchentoshan, Talisker and Laphroaig. If you’re taking the kids, they will be kept amused with the laser blast, archery, bungee trampolines, fly fishing and the four sided climbing wall, while the littler ones can enjoy having their face painted or have a shot on the bouncy castle. Now, not saying that the music is

the most important, but how can you have a festival without it? Situated on the bonny banks of Loch Fyne, Inveraray Castle will play host to over 121 home-grown musicians including internationally-acclaimed folk legends Capercaillie, Skerryvore and Skipinnish. Supported by superb local acts Caitlin Taylor and Dan Brown, alongside the pick of Argyll’s favourite bands and traditional Gaelic music. One of these performers Freya Giles, 29, from Broomhill in Glasgow was chosen by the Duchess herself, after Freya performed at a Caledonian MacBrayne competition in Kings Tuts for the chance to win a set at Hebridean Celtic Festival and Tiree Music Festival. The sets were streamed live and the Duchess of Argyll, festival organiser, watched the stream and was blown away by Freya‘s performance. Freya said: “It was so surreal to answer my phone only to be told that the Duchess of Argyll wanted me to perform at her festival. I had to take a few minutes to process what was happening but, of course, I said yes. It’s an amazing opportunity and I’m

so grateful for the chance to play at one of Scotland’s best loved festivals. Playing before a band I have listened to and who have influenced me for many years is such a strange feeling. I’m nervous but more excited to be able to perform in front of such a great crowd as Skippinish fans.” The Duchess of Argyll, Eleanor Campbell, said: “When Freya took to the stage and began singing, I knew I had to have her at Best of the West. Her voice was so beautiful and exactly the sort of folky sound you would find at the festival. We have a huge span of artists; from trad bands, to Gaelic singers, to acoustic sets. Freya blends a number of genres with her songs and seemed a perfect fit. I immediately sought to get her added to the lineup. We are thrilled so many local vendors are taking part and that the music lineup is bursting with both well-known and as up-and-coming talent. Having Freya added to the bill further shows just how much talent the West Coast of Scotland has and how important it is to celebrate it.” By

Glasgow woman believed to be ‘promoting terrorism’ on Twitter

A young woman from Glasgow has travelled to Syria and has been using her Twitter account to promote terrorism, it is alleged. Aqsa Mahmood, 20, was reported missing by her family in November 2013. Tweets were posted from a Twitter account under the name Umm Layth, believed to be Ms Mahmood, which has now been deactivated. Tweets included said: “Follow the examples of your brothers from Woolwich, Texas and Boston. “If you cannot make it to the battlefield then bring the battlefield to yourself.”

Ms Mahmood’s family have described her as a “studious and ambitious girl” and said they “cannot understand why she has travelled to Syria”.

In a statement, issued by Police Scotland, her family said: “We had no knowledge of our daughter’s plans to leave Scotland and immediately reported her as a missing person to the police... We are struggling to come to terms with the situation and we are working with the police.” A Police Scotland spokesman added:”Inquiries are ongoing in relation to her whereabouts and we are supporting her family.” By

Tel: 0141 778 8335 Protect your pet from pesky parasites! The warmer months are peak season for pesky parasites like fleas and ticks. Fleas are a major source of irritation to pets and owners alike. They feed on the animal’s blood and multiply rapidly to cause an infestation. As well as being found on your pet they will live in the carpets and bedding at home. Fleas are responsible for transmitting tapeworms in pets so worming your pet if you find fleas is also advisable. Ticks are found mainly in woodland areas or on the hills and moor land but can be found in areas of long grass, especially if deer or hedgehogs are in the area. Ticks also feed on your pets’ blood and can cause serious diseases such as Lyme’s disease as well as a reaction to the bite itself. It is important never to pull a tick from your pet’s body. This can result in the tick’s head being left in the skin, causing infection, pain and irritation. Tick removers are available to ensure safe and complete removal.

Angiostrongylus vasorum (also known as French Heartworm) is a parasite that infects dogs. The adult worms live in the heart and large blood vessels supplying the lungs and can cause a whole host of problems in affected animals and if left untreated it can be fatal. The lungworm parasite is carried by slugs and snails, which are often eaten by dogs on purpose or accidentally when attached to toys or grass or in outdoor water bowls. Symptoms range from breathing problems, blood clotting problems, general weakness and depression and even sudden collapse and death. Infection can be prevented by using a specific spot on preparation, available from your vet.

Lungworm is another parasite that is becoming increasingly common. The lungworm

Flies can cause a major problem to rabbits in warmer weather. They can lay eggs around the

rabbit’s bottom if it is soiled and quickly hatch into flesh eating maggots. It is important to check and clean your rabbit’s bottom every day and seek help from your vet if at all worried. Please contact Sandyhills Veterinary Clinic to discuss the best preventative products for your pet. Not every product treats every type of parasite so we will be happy to advice on the best options for your furry friends.

SIN CITY 2: A DAME TO KILL FOR

Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel try to prevent an embarrassing video going viral in this raunchy comedy! After ten years of marriage and two kids, Jay (Jason Segel) and Annie (Cameron Diaz) are in a relationship rut. To spice things up a little, the couple hit on a plan. They decide to have a kinky three-hour nookie session and record the whole thing on video. Job done, Jay erases the recording. At least, that what he thinks he’s done. In fact, he’s uploaded it to the Cloud, where it can be viewed by all their friends and family! The horrible truth dawns when they start receiving compliments about their performance. With the video just one click away from hitting the internet, the couple embark on a madcap race against time to prevent their intimate secrets becoming public knowledge. The stars and director of ‘Bad Teacher’ reunite for this deliciously risque comedy.

THE HUNDRED FOOT JOURNEY Two cultures collide in a delicious, heartwarming foodie drama starring Helen Mirren. The picturesque village of Saint-Antonin-NobleVal in the south of France is home to one of the country’s most prestigious restaurants. This Michelin starred temple of haute cuisine is overseen by snooty proprietress Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren). But the arrival of the displaced Indian Kadam family shakes things up. Bullish Papa (Om Puri) decides to open an Indian restaurant just across the road, with his culinary genius son Hassan (Manish Dayal) as head chef. Gastronomic war promptly breaks out! But Hassan’s interest in new flavours - not to mention Mme Mallory’s lovely sous chef, Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon) - leads to an extraordinary blending of cultures. This enchanting drama is adapted from Richard Morais’s bestseller by ‘Chocolat’ director Lasse Hallstrom. Cast opposite the great Helen Mirren is Indian superstar Om Puri, who’s best known here for performance in ‘East is East’.

BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth star in an intriguing amnesia thriller with an extraordinary twist! Each morning, Christine Lucas (Nicole Kidman) awakes with no memory. She thinks she’s 27, but she’s actually 40. Her patient husband, Ben (Colin Firth), explains that this is the result of a traumatic accident. She stores up information each day, but by the following morning it has been erased. Doctor Nash (Mark Strong) reveals that he has been working with Christine on her condition and has encouraged her to keep a video diary. But as secrets emerge and her doubts and suspicions grow, she begins to believe that she can trust nobody! Produced by Ridley Scott and adapted by ‘28 Weeks Later’ writer Rowan Joffe from S.J. Watson’s international bestseller, this an absorbing, tautly-scripted twisty-turny mystery. Leading a classy cast, Kidman and Firth cement the working partnership they established so effectively on ‘The Railway Man’

An increasingly alarming series of events then prompt Anna to check his story with the army - whereupon she receives a shock! ‘Downton Abbey’ star Dan Stevens demonstrates his versatility as the mesmerisingly dangerous David in director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett’s follow-up their cult horror hit ‘You’re Next’.

he pending referendum on Scottish independence is currently on the minds of millions, including four of the UK’s top comedians. The quartet is brought together by Kevin Bridges for this tongue-in-cheek look at one of the hottest political potatoes of the year.

Some may remember her from Channel 4’s 2005 series Spoons, a show which deserved a second run, but as the market was saturated with similar shows, that idea was cut short.“BBC Three was doing Man Stroke Woman and Channel 5 was doing a thing called Swinging, or Swingers or something, and we were doing Spoons, thinking how weird is this?” she smiles.“Three channels are doing relationshipbased sketch shows, and some thought, ‘Like the world needs another one of these,’ but I loved Spoons.

Psychic Art Psychic Art is a form of mediumship which involves being tuned into the spirit world in just the same way as you would for any other form of spirit communication such as clairvoyance, clairaudience and clairsentience, it is all about working with the energy of the spirit.

By this time in my forties I was impressed to buy art materials, I bought pastels because they were quick and easy to access. Although I had never used them before I knew instinctively what to do as there was a guiding hand. I bought them because I began seeing full colour Issueworking 7 spirit people when in churches or doing readings, guides and relatives alike and they would not go away until I had captured their image and pastels seemed the quickest way to do it.

It isn’t only people who are drawn or painted it can be a beloved pet or a favourite place or a fantasy drawing or painting. There have been many psychic pictures produced over centuries the most notable modern day artist in Britain was Coral Polge who is now in the spirit world.

Which Element are You?

The elements are a thing of nature and we all connect to them in one way or another. In their simplest form think about your star signs, they are made up of Air, Earth, Fire and Water and we belong to one of them unless, you fall on what’s known as the cusp then you connect with two of them. Each element holds it own power and destruction and understanding this can assist you in knowing how to work with your element to make it work for you instead of against you. To make this a bit more interesting I’ve created a short quiz for you to see which element you connect with the most. Take a look at each question in turn and score them as you go – when you have finished add the scores together and check out the information attached to your score below. Q1 Which of the following holidays would you be most drawn to? A The Bahamas B A Safari break C A stay in an Ice hotel D Swimming with the Dolphin’s Q2 Which colour are you most attracted to? A Scarlet B Rustic Orange C Silver D Aqua Q3 What food type would you go for? A Hot & Spicy B Home Cooked C Depends on your mood but most things appeal D Vegetable based Q4 If you were a desert what would you be? A Rum Baba B Caramel Apple Betty

C Meringue D Ice Cream

Q5 You are taking up a new hobby, which one of these would you go for? A Martial arts B Archaeology C Art classes D Sailing Q6 Which pet describes you? A A cheeky monkey B A faithful dog C An elegant swan D A changing chameleon Q7 Which characteristic describes you? A Hot headed B Stubborn as a Mule C Cool as a cucumber D Deep and mysterious

Answers

Mainly A’s You’re the element of fire and as such can have an impulsive approach to life, wanting things done yesterday and not waiting around for anyone else to get things started. Your hot headed approach can at times get you into trouble and the fact that you like to be right all the time doesn’t help things. You do have a passion for goals that you set yourself and are very driven and will achieve them letting nothing stand in your way. Your forte is your drive and sense of adventure and if you harness this energy right then you are onto a winning streak and in business you are good to have as a leader or someone in authority. Mainly B’s You’re the element of Earth and you like things to be

done in a practical manner so that it doesn’t take you out of your own comfort zone. You can be so stubborn and stamp your feet that you cut off your nose to spite your face at times and you don’t back down. You do however have a great empathy and compassion for people and want to help where you can which is wonderful as long as you don’t pay the price for it by not giving enough time to you. Earth elements make good money decisions and like to stay ahead of the game knowing that there are no surprises they have not accounted for. Mainly C’s You’re the element of Air and this means that a lot of the time you live with your head in the clouds, love to daydream and need to have a vision to work to. This is all great as long as you don’t take on too many things and end up trying to juggle them all at once – you have a tendency to do things alone and so this could be an issue especially when you have too much on your plate. Your strength lies in the versatility of thought that you have, your creative and ingenious ideas and Aha moments. If you are not achieving at a high level then its not good enough so give yourself a break and look at what you have done not what you have not. Mainly D’s You’re the element of Water and this element likes to play their cards close to their chest, be secretive and as deep as the ocean at times. You may tend to make things harder than they need to be but it’s your way of proving that you have worked hard to get the end goal. You dip your toe in and out of things until you know exactly if it is something that you want to get involved in before you dive into things headfirst. Water elements make great councillors, mediators and intuitive and by opening yourself up to opportunities you can uncover a wealth of knowledge about yourself which can assist you in your own career.

Tarot Card of the Week

This week I have chosen

The Devil:

This is one of the Major Arcana and represents past limitations or patterns that individuals go back to again and again that are a form of bondage keeping you stuck in a position where you feel helpless and yet long for change. It links to the star sign of Capricorn and the month of January and as such is an indication of the stubborn nature that can be a kind of “ cut your nose off to spite your face” scenario. The power of the devil is immense and if used correctly can assist you in breaking patterns not holding them - the choice is up to the individual but it asks you to face these head on. Another side to the devil is the need for passion and intimacy in a relationship and as long as this happens in a balanced way and does not become an obsession, you’re on the right track. Go down the wrong road and you become caught up in drama and chaos.

Colours of Spiritual Wisdom Colour is used for a whole variety of things from the emotions of children in a classroom, patient areas in a hospital and even in prisons.

Research shows that selecting certain colours can have a beneficial effect on people in certain environments. I thought I would take a look at how psychics and spiritual worker use colour in their practice. Gold – this is one of the highest spiritual colour’s you can have and it assists in the psychic or mediumship connection when linking to the spiritual realms to bring forth the proper guides and loved ones from the spirit world.

Silver – our etheric bodies [the bodies template in the astral / spiritual plane] are linked by a silver cord from the solar plexus. Silver also links with the moon energy and psychic work and so, it a wonderful colour to use when preparing to do any form of moon magic or psychic readings. Violet – those who practice high white magic have this colour in their ceremonial robes – you will see it in religious sectors as well as in the spiritual ones. Violet is about the connection with the divine and works for your own inner personal journeying and for links with the Ascended Masters.

Indigo – this connects with the third eye which is the centre of the forehead and is connected with clairvoyance and second sight. People who are engaged in opening this chakra or psychic centre can, at times, see this colour during meditation. Blue – associated with the area of communication and so, those who work with clairaudience or extra hearing perceptions, might have this in their aura and work on enhancing it in their own practices. When spiritual masters teach, they will utilise this powerful colour to assist them in putting the spiritual message across.

Green – the colour associated with loving and healing energy. Therapists and counselors will work with this colour to help the healing process and often-light candles with this colour to bring in this energy. It is the colour associated with the heart chakra and empaths or those who are sympathetic to the needs of others. Yellow – is considered the colour for the seat of the soul and the psychic area around the solar plexus – when psychic’s work they tap into this energetic colour. It is also said to enhance learning, therefore they may use yellow lights or candles when trying to understand new and sacred information.

By Joan Charles

Orange – can be linked with past life work and clearing out old Karma, like a kind of spiritual de-clutter. When working with the natural Law of Attraction I bring in this colour to assist in the planning of future desires and utilise its powerful energy on my vision boards. Red – WOW, this it an intense colour energy and needs to be harnessed in the right way in order to give you the correct amount of power without - going over the top. It’s the colour of passion and action and so it is wonderful to use when you need a real energy boost or to help bring something to fruition.

Joan Charles I am delighted to be delivering your stars although; I won’t be doing them in the traditional way, as I am not an astrologer. For many years I have provided the stars using Tarot cards and that is what I will be doing here so, I guess in a sense they should be called, Taroscopes. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy what the cards have to say.

Aries

There are times when we shoes to see things the way they really are and others when we ignore all the signs, even when they are staring us in the face. This week it’s all about choices and how you decide to go forward.

Taurus You may need to work around things in order to get over issues and find new solutions. I know you prefer the grounded approach however, that is not always possible and this could be a personal challenge for future growth.

Gemini

Like the phoenix rising from the ashes you are good at reinventing yourself and situation. There is no stagnation for you it’s a case of what action you are going to take to get things back on track.

Cancer You know, I see you sitting in a good position and life being in

a contented place but at the same time there is a sense that you feel trapped in some way. Look for ways to change your current situation.

Leo A very good friend will come to your aid and help you resolve some-

thing that has been a problem for some time. It is now time that you danced to your own tune and not that of other folks.

Virgo

Paper work may need your attention this week and that’s fine because you like to have all the finer details of things tied up and sorted. Your organizational skills are top notch and so; you have nothing to worry about.

Libra

If you have been considering a move of house this idea could be staring to grow and perhaps you will even venture out and view some properties just to see what is out there on the market.

Scorpio

We can’t always be on top of the world and its is important to recognize that there are some days when we are not firing on all cylinders however, tomorrow is always another day with fresh and exciting things to come.

Sagittarius Well the cards are indicating its pamper week for you, a make over or a shopping spree or both, it makes no difference as the whole point is to do what you feel like doing. I’m also seeing a catch up with old friends too.

Capricorn

Don’t spend your time looking over the past, its gone and there is not much you can do to change it other than see it in a different way. Focus on today and the things you want to achieve.

By Suzanne Gibson

For centuries we have been fascinated by faeries and many of the early recordings have been found in British folklore, tales of little winged people with majickal powers who reside in our homes and gardens. There is evidence for everyone to see in the form of a perfect ring of toadstools. So perfectly formed that surely they couldn’t be created by nature alone?

born in Dunfermline and became one of Scotland’s most renowned fairy painters. The oil on the canvas depicts the fairy queen protecting her royal child as its snatched by the fairies, a closer look exposes the goblins, elves and even willow of the wisps, all of which was sent to reinforce the belief that Europeans had about fairies and their existence.

so, take time to sit with nature, as fairies love flowers and trees, as this is their natural habitat. You can even place a faerie door in your home or garden, offering an opening into the majickal portal to their enchanting faerie world. If you are feeling brave you could even make a little faerie dwelling and cast a faerie wishing spell with this wee spell below.

Faeries are wonderful creatures that step between our world and a parallel universe, they are said to be mischievous yet, enchanting little people who have romantic names such as pixies elf’s and brownies. Brownies are the name now adopted by our junior girl guides one of which is called the rosebud. Now, each group is identified as our very own elves and pixies and many others. Groups where each child can gain status by carrying out faerie like tasks in order to be helpful to their fellow humans. Once completed, they proudly display their badges as reward, lined up like soldiers standing to attention along their arms.

One wonderful example lies in Aberfoyle near the trossachs. Along the path to the fairy glen high on Doon Hill stands the majikal fairy-wishing tree. This special place belonging to the minister Robert Kirk, who was born the seventh son of the local minister himself became associated with the village church.

INGREDIENTS FOR OUR SPELL

It was thought that faeries would steal your children and replace them with a changeling [a changeling is a human being that has been replaced by a faerie] the evidence of this can be found in our own Glasgow Art Gallery. The painting known as the “ fairy raid “ by Noel Paton, who was

It was thought that from a young age Robert had the ability to see the fairy realm. He was often seen walking the path to Doon Hill near the fairy wishing tree where he would spend time talking and writing about the fairies - he became so fascinated that he finally wrote a book that can be found this day in our Scottish literature. Unfortunately Robert disappeared one day and was found dead on the path on the way to the wishing tree. Many believe he was taken by the fairies and changed by a changeling. Like Robert would you wish to connect to the faerie realm? If

The faerie ring within we stand to make a wish upon our land, Faeries come and faeries meet and to our realm faeries greet, Cast a spell with faerie dust but be precise it is a must! Why don’t you join us at Aery Faeries for a faerie workshop on the 15th Nov, 11am - 3.00pm. Aery Faeries will provide light lunch and materials For more details contact Suzanne or Cecilia on: 0141 328 5844

Aquarius

Good advice may come from an older male who knows a thing or two and who can help to guide you in the right direction. I feel that financial situations may be about to change slightly for the better.

Pisces

It could be that you are trying to separate the head form the heart and not getting very far with it. You can only take each day as it comes and see what happens. Life has a way of sorting things out.

5 minutes with John Taylor Glasgow born Independent Singer/ songwriter John Taylor this week launches his fifth Album, “Demons and Angels”. Before the much anticipated Launch party at Oran Mor, we caught up with John for a quick Q and A So John, Demons and Angels is released this week, where did the name of the album come from? It’s been two years in the writing, and it’s all about having to take the bad along with the good. You’ve been playing music since 15 years old, what has been the highlight so far? Having “Pull you through” placed on Californication (Ed’s note - which goes out to over ten million viewers) I was at a stage where it seemed I was not getting a break. I had been trying for ages to have my music placed, signed a few wrong deals, but they helped prepare me for when the right deal came along This led to “pull you through” hitting no.1 on Tunefinder U.S.A, as well as entering the Itunes market, No. 1 in Sweden, 12 in the States, top 5 in Canada.

Who has been your biggest musical influence? Neil Young. I mostly listen to a lot of late 60’s and early 70’s. Bands like Led Zepplin.

Win a Signed CD plus 2 Gig Tickets!

What’s your favourite track on the new album? The day I said goodbye, it literally took 10 minutes to write, but it flows so well. It’s simple and a pleasure to play. What’s your take on the whole X-Factor culture? It’s not my scene, it might work for some. But too many people think they deserve something for nothing, it’s basically a glorified karaoke competition. Tell me a bit more about John Taylor away from music Family life keeps me busy, and I love Hill walking. But away from music, well I like to play music! THE BIG QUIZ!

Ingredients

500g waxy potatoes • knob of butter 2 small onions, finely sliced • 8-9 eggs

Method

Ask a grown up to finely slice the onions and cut the potatoes into roughly ½ cm slices. Heat a knob of butter in a medium (about 24cm) frying pan over a low heat and cook onions gently for 10 – 15 until starting to go brown. With the help of your grown up helper, put the potatoes in a saucepan, cover with boiling water and simmer gently for around 8 - 10 mins until just cooked through and drain well. Break the eggs into a jug and beat with a fork, season with a generous grind of pepper and a pinch of salt. Add a little more butter to the frying pan and add the potatoes. Pour over the egg mixture. Cook for 15 mins until almost set and golden brown underneath - you can use a fish slice to lift the omelette up and check. Ask your grown up helper to put a large plate over pan and carefully flip the omelette onto the plate. Slide the omelette back on to the pan and cook until cooked then serve.

piggy property!

A strange property listing featuring a photo of a sleeping pig has sparked intrigue online. The one-bedroom Ipswich property for sale is currently on the market for £120,000. There is no mention of what the resident pig is doing inside the property or if the animal will be staying in the house once it is sold. The online listing also features a photo of a cat sitting on top of an oven.

Ipswich-based estate agents, Connells, who listed the detached property on Rightmove, later removed the photo with the pig. “This unique one bedroom detached house, formerly a Meeting Hall, [is] situated in the ever popular of East Ipswich,” the listing explains. “It is often harsh to describe a residential property as a “pigsty”, but in this case it seems justified,” a user commented.

The Smart Girl’s Guide to... Increasing the value of your home Whether you have put your home up for sale or thinking about it, you will want to sell your property for as much money as its worth. However, simple things could be putting off prospective buyers. Here are our tops tips for making your property more appealing to buyers and therefore making it worth more money...

First impressions

First impressions make all the difference. If it’s a house you are selling, make sure the garden is tidy. Repaint the front door if it needs a freshen up. If it is a flat, don’t think buyers won’t care about the landing, because they will. Tidy away old newspapers or rubbish.

De-clutter!

Have a big clear out. Clutter makes a house or flat look crowded and untidy. It can also make it appear smaller. Start packing up your ornaments before you move. It’s a good idea to remove as many personal belongings as possible. If you are showing a fresh, uncluttered property, this allows the viewer to imagine themselves living there, and could possibly make them fall in love with it!

a neutral décor will appeal to the majority, and gives them a clean slate to decorate themselves.

Set the scene

Make the house ‘liveable’ without the clutter. For example, if it’s a sunny morning, set the table with a jug of orange juice and a plate of croissants. A winters evening? Light candles and dim the lights. This will make it irresistible to buyers.

Grab your paintbrush Hey good lookin’... As well as de-cluttering your decorations and belongings, de-clutter the walls. If you like having your walls painted a garish pink and purple stripe, or having bling bling diamantes covering your bedroom ceiling, that’s fine but you’re prospective buyer might not. Decorating the house in

Then there is the oldest trick in the book... Bake a cake! The smell of home-baking or bread is the ultimate smell that makes people think of home. Bake a cake and let the smell waft through the house. By

Scotland Yard up for sale One of the most iconic properties in British policing has been officially put up for sale after nearly 55 years in service as the hub of police authority in London. Scotland Yard, situated in the heart of Victoria, London, has been landed with price tag of nothing short of £250 million pounds. The 600,000 sq ft building will however, no longer be called Scotland Yard, instead it will be known as Ten Broadway, and is set to become one of the most prestigious properties in the western world. The office block which has been the force’s headquarters since 1967 overlooks Buckingham Palace, St James Park and also the Houses of Parliament. It is expected that the sale of the building could eventually reach more than £300 million pounds, with the 600,000 square ft building accommodating three or four blocks of flats, shops and offices. Any prospective buyers will be

disappointed to learn that the purchase of the iconic building will not include the world famous sign. The Scotland Yard sign is upping sticks and moving with the police force to its new headquarters on Victoria Embankment.

Due to cost cutting measures there are expected to be as many as 200 police building sold by 2016, there have already been sales totalling more than £124.5 million pounds, and Scotland Yard is expected to sell for more than double that total in the near future. Charles Pinchbeck head of West End development at JLL speaking about the sale of Scotland Yard “There is very strong demand for development opportunities in Central London, “ he said. “You could see it exceeding the guide price.” After the necessary sale of the 200 buildings, the police force will have cut annual running costs by £60 million pounds. The new state of the art headquarters will be able to house 1,000 officers, in comparison the current New Scotland Yard building hosts 2,500,

A 1000ft skyscraper that will include a thrilling “drop ride” is set to be built in Miami, making it the tallest building in Florida. the remaining 1,500 will be relocated at other Met buildings in the capital. Some of the proceeds gained with the sales of the buildings are going toward buying hi tech equipment such as body-worn cameras, secure tablets and smartphones for officers. Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime Stephen Grenhalgh said “By selling the old Met HQ and shrinking the estate, we can afford to fund the massive programme we have under way to equip front-line officers with cutting edge technology.” By

Construction of SkyRise Miami is expected to begin this year, and is due for completion in 2017. Once complete, the building will house a nightclub and three rides, including a vertical “drop ride” down 50 storeys. The website for the planned attraction states that the “Sky Rise Drop” will be “like base jumping while attached to a sophisticated bungee system”. Those brave enough will be able soak up the incredible views of Miami while they jump off the side of the building. There will also be a “Sky Plunge”

ride, which will be like a rollercoaster. Creators say it will make those on board feel as though they are “parachuting out of an airplane”. SkyRise will be built in part by Tishman Construction, the builders of the original World Trade Centers in New York. It is expected to cost $400million (£242 million). By

West End residents’ anger over new parking rules proposal

BMH comes to the rescue of the classic vehicle fraternity with a choice of ethanol-free fuels Scan the pages of any classic car publication or website these days and you’re likely to find mention of ethanol, the constituent that accounts for an increasing percentage of our pump fuels and which has, rightly or wrongly, struck fear into the hearts of classic vehicle owners far and wide.

Residents in Glasgow’s West End are furious with the City Council’s proposal for new parking rules from Dowanhill to Byres Road. In a bid to stop people leaving their cars in the West End and travelling into the city centre, the council’s road chiefs have proposed a maximum stay of three hours in pay and display parking bays. Users will be charged 20p for the first 30 minutes and 20p for every 10 minutes after that. The restrictions would be in place from 8am until 10pm, seven days a week. Residents will be offered the chance to buy a yearly parking permit for £50, while businesses will be required to pay £700. Local people are furious with the proposed changes, which would remove their existing resident only parking bays. It is understood they have sought legal advice and intend to go to court

to fight for their spaces if the move goes ahead. Jean Charsley, secretary of Hillhead Community Council said: “A lot of people in this area bought their homes because of the residents parking and five families are already moving out.” A formal complaint has already been lodged with the Council with a spokesperson stating: “The proposed parking controls aim to prevent the area from being used by commuters who leave their cars, using it as a free car park. “We aim to protect both residential and short-stay business use parking as the current model can lead to businesses being hurt with customers unable to find parking spaces. “Those wishing to visit Byres Road have very limited opportunities to find a parking space. Introducing parking controls would mean a turnover allowing increased access for shoppers.” By

As related advice flows from all quarters, British Motor Heritage (BMH) has come up with a foolproof solution – the supply of ethanol-free fuel. With immediate effect the company is offering both unleaded and leaded ethanol-free petrol, courtesy of the renowned specialist American supplier VP Racing Fuels. It is being sold in drums of 5 or 54 US gallons (18.93 or 204.41 litres) and classic vehicle enthusiasts and businesses alike have the option of collecting the product from VP’s premises in St Helens, Merseyside, UK, or having it delivered direct to their door anywhere in Britain or mainland Europe. BMH is also stocking VP’s purpose-made easy-pour spouts, complete with vent hole, to help buyers safely transfer the product to their vehicles. Both these ethanol-free fuels have a shelf life of up to two years and provide extra protection against detonation. They also have the ability to create substantial increases in power and torque when compared with ordinary pump fuel as, at 100 octane, they are 5 percent more potent than typical UK forecourt products. The cost of an 18.93

Atalanta Motors making comeback Atalanta Motors, heard of them? Probably not.

Although, ask the older relatives in your family, they might have a slight inkling. Due to the outbreak of WW2 the business shut its doors in 1939, and sadly never opened up again, amassing a manufacturing total of 21 cars. But now they’re back, and they mean business, with the new Atalanta model set to make an appearance at the forthcoming Hampton Court Concours of Elegance. The decades old company, which revels in an incredibly niche market; will have classic car fans salivating at the prospect of owning a little piece of class. 90% per cent of the components will be designed, engineered and manufactured in house. How do the cars look?

Imagine, if you can, the type of cars driven by the car enthusiast Toad in the Wind in the Willows and you get a slight grasp of what kind of car can be expected at the unveiling.

However in comparison to the unfortunate Toad in the Wind in the Willows the new version of the classic car will be enhanced with modern technology and safety features, blending the effortless class of old with the reassuring safety and efficiency of modern technology. According toAtalanta, “it’s craftsmanship and technology combined: the body is made of hand beaten aluminium and is draped over an ash wood chassis. “A typical coach built structure”, according to a source from Atalanta. Using 75 years of motoring evolution the company has promised to “employ relevant modern technology

to enhance performance and safety without compromise.” Atalanta was re launched in 2012 by current managing director Martyn Corfield, Atalanta was known before WW2 for its 1937 sports tourer, which was the epitome of style, innovation and performance at the timesomething they are aiming to reclaim with the unveiling of the new model. Martyn Corfield, Managing Director said “Staying true to the original Atalanta design principles, we have enhanced the positive and enjoyable characteristics of vintage motoring in a style that is relevant and exciting today.” The new vehicle, chassis number one, will be unveiled at the Hampton Court of Councours of Elegance from the 5th of September alongside its predecessor an original 1937 Atalanta.

litre drum is £67.50, which equates to a price of £3.57 per litre (including duty and VAT), plus delivery charges where relevant. British Motor Heritage (BMH) is best known for the replacement panels and body shells it manufactures for many of the most popular British-built classic cars – see www.bmh-ltd.com. It also markets a range of complementary related parts and accessories via its online store – Motoring Classics (www. motoringclassics.co.uk) – and produces a quarterly magazine of the same name. It was the response to an article in the Spring 2013 edition of the publication that convinced Managing Director, John Yea, there was a pent-up demand for ethanol-free fuels within the classic vehicle world, and VP have now quite literally come up with the goods.

Said John Yea: “Though we aimed to calm readers’ views on ethanol through the advice of one of Europe’s major fuel suppliers, the resulting correspondence made it clear that some owners would only relax if they could return to using a completely ethanol-free product. Now they can, thanks to the option of VP Vintage Unleaded and VP Vintage Leaded.” Still relatively unknown in the UK, VP cut its teeth on the American motorsport scene, where its product C12 is claimed to be the most successful fuel in US racing history. The company is now the official supplier to 60 major race series and organising bodies around the globe (including the UK’s Santa Pod Raceway and Isle of Man TT), and

boasts distributors in Central America, the Middle-East, Asia, Australia and Europe, and a rapidly-growing network of 1,500 dealers. Commented VP’s Regional Manager for Europe, Jim Kelly: “We are fully au fait with the concerns raised by ethanol among American classic vehicle owners and businesses, and are delighted to be able offer a solution to the UK and European fraternity through BMH. As a classic car enthusiast and racer as well as parts supplier, John Yea is the ideal person to be masterminding the supply of our ethanol-free fuels to the historic vehicle market, and we will be fully supporting this activity with whatever technical support is required.” Further information on the supply of VP Vintage Unleaded and VP Vintage Leaded can be obtained by emailing sales@bmh-ltd.com.

Council makes £800,000 in bus gate fines in two months Glasgow City Council has netted a staggering £800,000 since the end of June in fines for drivers passing through the bus gate that has been established in Nelson Mandela Place. Drivers are now banned from passing through Nelson Mandela Place for a large portion of the day and receive a minimum £30 penalty, with it rising to £60 if not paid within fourteen days, for breaking the restriction. At least 28,000 thousand drivers have passed through the gate when they shouldn’t have and £477,000 has been collected in fines so far. The bus gate has been deemed controversial in its short life so far, with many viewing it as money making measure by the Council - a charge they strongly deny. Faster journey times for buses and

taxis, a reduction in cars around the George Square area and improvements to the local environment are amongst the reasons given for the introduction of the bus gate. The amount received in two months is more than Edinburgh City Council receive in a year (£718,000) and just short of Aberdeen City Council’s yearly total (896,000). By

Glasgow City defeat Celtic 1-0

SPORT

Transfer Day Round-Up

And it’s over, the transfer window once again slams shut – note it always slams shut, never quietly or gently closed, but slammed, shattering the hopes of fans across Europe that their team will finally get the missing piece of the puzzle. A 90th minute wonder goal by Glasgow City defender Eilish McSorley gave City a 1-0 win over Celtic in a tight contest at Airdrie Excelsior Stadium, sponsored by Birrells Bar in Redding, Falkirk. City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black juggled his pack once more as his side aimed to cope with three massive matches in seven days and City looked lethargic at times against a strong and hard working Celtic side. In a first half of few clear cut chances, it was Fay who was the busiest of the two keepers, coming well for corners and crosses into the box and denying Courtney Whyte and O’Sullivan in particular who carved out City’s best opportunities of the first period.

Celtic’s best moment came when a short headed back pass from City was pounced upon by Abigail Harrison, but Niki Deiter did well to save well twice from the young striker as she tried to open the scoring for the away side. In the second half, City edged the game on chances with Leanne Crichton enjoying one of the best as she picked out a superb pass from McSorley only to be denied yards from goal by in form Celtic stopper Fay. Denise O’Sullivan was close to finishing a few openings for the home side, but on each occasion was thwarted by the Celtic rear guard. Abbi Grant also had a great chance in front of goal after being played in by Fiona Brown but she shot wide when perhaps she could have done better.

Celtic came close to opening the scoring through Emma Brownlie, but Deiter in the City nets pulled off a fine stop to turn Brownlie’s shot from the edge of the box round the post for a corner. With full time approaching, McSorley collected the ball out on the left hand side, stepped forward and rifled a 40 yard strike into the top corner leaving Fay with no chance. City were then forced to see out the remaining five minutes of added time without Abbi Grant, who went of injured, but held on to maintain their 100% record in all competitions and move 12 points clear at the top of the SWPL with six games remaining. Glasgow City are back in action next Sunday when they take on Aberdeen at Airdrie Excelsior Stadium, 2.30pm.

Joy for Gallacher as he claims Ryder Cup spot Scotland will have a representative on the European side when the Ryder Cup takes place at Gleneagles later this month after Stephen Gallacher was selected as one of Paul McGinley’s wildcard picks. Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood were the other two selected alongside the nine automatic picks to complete the squad that will take on America.

Gallcher came agonizingly close to an improbable automatic spot when he finished third at the Italian Open last weekend, needing a top two finish to claim the last automatic place on the side. Ecstasy followed agony for the Linlithgow ace when captain McGinley named him in the side on Tuesday, citing his fine form in Italy as a major factor. After a truly sensational Ryder Cup at Medinah in Chicago, the Gleneagles

The collective sigh of relief from chairmen and chief executives could almost be heard as they no longer have to worry about their prized assets leaving or the fans storming the stadium and forcibly taking the chequebook off them. No, until January this is it, some are happy, some are sad, but there’s nothing more that can be done. Someone explained to Celtic that money can be used to purchase player rather than merely borrowing them and they signed Stefan Scepovic, finally, after several changes of heart, it’s safe to say the Serb won’t be telling us he’d always dreamed of playing for Celtic as a boy in Serbia. In an attempt to break the record for most loans in one window, they almost managed to get John Guidetti from Man City, ironically paperwork proved their undoing as it wasn’t completed in time and the deal broke down, though the club are appealing the decision and are hopeful of forcing it through. Teemu Pukki, Amido Balde and Holmbert Fridjonsson all left the club on loan and exactly zero tears were shed. Rangers spent most of the day with

the lights off ignoring the phone as their ideal day unfolded, nothing happened and no one left. Partick Thistle captured former Liverpool striker Nathan Eccleston in what was one of very few other deals completed in Scotland on deadline day, perhaps because teams were extremely organised and had all their business done early in the summer or perhaps a lack of money and available talent meant teams decided they’d settle for what they had. Meanwhile in England, owners dived into their Scrooge McDuck style pools of cash and splashed it generously, with the deals in the window landing at just under £1 billion spent. Manchester United, who I believe are currently doing a conga line round the city centre led by Radamel Falcao, Daley Blind and Chief Executive Ed Woodward certainly won deadline day. Once again they proved that no matter how bad things get on the park, victories can still be claimed with big name signings. In the other big deal of the day, Danny Welbeck found himself suddenly behind the aforementioned Falcao, as well as, Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie and decided he’d actually like to play football and left for Arsenal in an £16 million deal. Yes. Sixteen. Million. Pounds. Time to regroup, recover and actually play football, though, it is only four months until the window reopens. By

Testimonial on hold WIN! Glasgow Tigers captain Theo Pijper has put his testimonial off until the start of next year.

The Dutchman had planned to hold the event at Ashfield Stadium on September 28, with the permission of the club, to celebrate more than a decade in British speedway. However, the 34-year-old has been forced to postpone it until next season as may of the riders he had hoped would race are likely to be caught up with other commitments. Pijper said: “As we approach the date we had set, it has become clear that there is so much going on in speedway that it wasn’t going to be easy for riders to confirm that they could come.

“There’s a long track grand prix in Germany, and I would have been keen to have some of these guys over, plus the Premier League play-offs will be in full swing by that time. The fixtures for that are not known yet, so no-one can say where they might be.

If you and a friend want to go and see the Glasgow Tigers at Ashfield Stadium on 14th September facing off the Edinburgh Monarchs, all you have to do is answer this simple question:

What country is rider Kasper Lykke Nielsen from?

Send your answer to us on a self addressed postcard marked “Tigers Comp” to:

“I’m grateful to everyone who has offered to support the meeting so far, I hope they will still still be happy to do so when we stage the meeting at the end of March next year.” A party night which had been planned for a Glasgow venue on September 27 will still be going ahead, with tickets available at both Glasgow and Edinburgh. Fundraising events in support of the testimonial will be staged over the winter.

Rocks sign 6’6” Tayo Ogedengbe

The Glasgow Rocks have confirmed 6’6” English guard/ forward, Tayo Ogedengbe for the 2014/15 season.

Ogedengbe is no stranger to the BBL and will be coming into the Rocks squad with a wealth of pro basketball experience. He started his career playing for the London Capitals before making the move to the Guildford Heat where he flourished under the guidance of Heat coach, Creon Raftopoulos. During his final season at the Heat (2011/12) he averaged 16.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. He followed that with an impressive season at the London Lions (2012/13) where he averaged 16.6 points and 4.9

rebounds per game.

Head Coach Sterling Davis has had Ogendengbe on his radar for some time now and is pleased that he has agreed to come to Glasgow for the 2014/15 season: “I have known Tayo for a good while and have followed his progress since his entrance into the league. He has developed very quickly into one of the premier British players in a short space of time. He brings so many positives to your team at both ends of the floor and at multiple positions which bodes well for what we want to achieve here.” After his meteoric rise in the BBL, Ogendengbe opted for a change in scenery and decided to play for French

Well it’s that time of the week again; I look out the best value bets that are around for you. Last week, we found you a 10/1 correct score winner, amongst others. This week, the odds aren’t as high, but there is still some decent value bets around. It’s the international break in football, so there are no Premiership games, but there is still some value around in the lower leagues. First off Peterhead at home to Livingston, Livingston are in fine form at the moment, however Peterhead have a great home record over the past few seasons and the 6/4 about them is great value. Barnet at home to Alfreton at 1/3 is a good acca enhancer.

NM2 side, Calais Basket Cheminots last season. His familiarity with the BBL and his recent experience in France, cemented Coach Davis’ decision to bring him to Glasgow: “He got the chance to test the waters in Europe last season which I think really improved his tactical game and forced him to play within a system. He wants to win and that’s what I look for in a guy.” Rocks fans will be able to get a glimpse of the new look Rocks squad on the 14th September when they face a touring USA Select team at the Emirates Arena. It will be the first real hit out for the Rocks as they get their pre-season under-way. Tickets are available at www.glasgowrocks.co.uk

Sunday the 7th sees a host of International matches, Take Hungary and Denmark at home at odds of ½ and 2/5 respectively to continue enhancing your acca. And Greece at Evens to give a total acca odds of 13/1 The time has now arrived, the moment everyone in Scotland has been waiting for. Yes, it’s Germany versus Scotland. The opportunity for The Rampant Lion to once again become unofficial World champions again. But don’t hold your breath, this German side is the best we have seen in a long time, however, all is not lost. I think Strachan, who has turn the fortunes of this team around, will guide the brave Scots to a 1-1 draw, and at odd of 14/1 too good to miss for a small wager. Acca – Peterhead, Barnet, Greece, Hungary and Denmark – 13/1 Singles – Scotland 1-1 draw 14/1 By

Strachan, a man to believe in.

In Gordon Strachan’s first year as manager of the Scottish national team he has achieved something that predecessor Craig Levein never managed in his three-year tenure. Belief. Belief doesn’t win you matches however, and with Sunday rapidly approaching, the Scottish National side will have the opportunity to prove to the Tartan Army foot-soldiers, the

armchair die-hards and the rest of the footballing world, that Scotland’s hitting a peak of 22nd in FIFA’s world rankings, in May of this year was not a slice of good fortune. Currently sitting at 28, strong team performances, and a few decent results during qualification, should see Scotland rocket into the top 20 of FIFA’s rankings and expect Gordon Strachan to have every single player on the pitch to push their body to the

limit in trying to achieve this. As a player, Strachan was known to battle on the pitch, until every sinew in his body was used and drained. He will only accept the same commitment, from the players at his disposal. Unfortunately all that stands in the way is the current World Cup holders, no 1 ranked FIFA team and arguably the greatest German side of all time. Making

formidable, is the shock result midweek where Argentina minus their talisman Messi, destroyed Germany 4-2. Any World Cup Final malaise felt by Joachim Lowe’s well-oiled footballing machine, will have been ruthlessly and efficiently dealt with after Wednesday’s defeat. There will never be a acceptable time to play the reigning world champions but Scotland would not accept or expect any

less than to do battle with the greatest the footballing world has to offer.

Successfully, acquire any result from Germany on Sunday and it will be

praise well earned and the world of football will take notice.

Welcome to the new and improved Scotland team. We believe. By
