Highest Heart Disease Death Rate in UK

Glaswegians have the highest rate of premature deaths from cardiovascular disease, a charity has revealed.

A list of the areas have been released by the BHF, revealing the highest and lowest death rates for cardiovascular disease.

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) have released figures stating that Glaswegians are four times more at risk of dying prematurely from heart and circulatory disease than people living in Hampshire.

In Glasgow, 144 people out of every 100,000 under the age of 75 prematurely die from CVD. In contrast, only 40 out of every 100,000 in Hart in Hampshire prematurely die because of this reason.

Other places listed as having high death rates include Manchester with 134 per 100,000, Blackpool (125), Dundee (123) and Inverclyde (123). The charity revealed that around 100 people under the age of 75 die from CVD every day across the UK. This makes for more than a quarter of all UK deaths.

BHF chief executive Simon Gillespie said: “These figures are a stark reminder of the unacceptable number of people that lose their lives to cardiovascular disease every year, often increased by the place they live.” By

TVWEEK The Middletons are still perceptions of love, sex and politics. The first episode picks up in 1923, and the Allinghams are in a good place, living in a grander house where Edmund is hosting a weekend party for his political sponsor Lord Kilmartin. As part of the entertainment, a now grown-up Bert takes part in a race – although he’s later accused of cheating, with Edmund refusing to pay out his winnings. John Middleton (John Simm) is now a dairy farmer, but isn’t doing so well financially and is struggling to pay the rent on his barn. However, Bert soon comes up with a money-making plan to help out his father when boxer Ghana Jones, who has been

Then again, cast list aside, any drama that can hold its own in a ratings war with Downton Abbey – as The Village did in its first run – is more than worthy of a second series in our eyes. And so Peter Moffat’s stunning offering returns, as the show presses on its ambitious plan to tell the story of the 20th century through the life of one Peak District village. This time around, the plot moves into the roaring 1920s, and the arrival of the jazz age has radically changed old

And when the Middletons give Ghana supper, and learn a little more about the boxer’s background, Grace all at once knows what she has to do. For Maxine Peake, this series sees her character Grace following a new passion – politics – something which she’s thrilled about. Peake explains: “Grace finds her voice this series which was a joy to play someone working through a political

awakening. I feel it is important to play characters with something to say about life or politics, although I wouldn't mind being in a piece and being the other end of the political scale as long as the piece is saying something. It's about the story, not who I play.” The series brings with it several new additions to the cast – including Tom Varey, who has joined as an older Bert and whom Peake cannot speak highly enough of. “What an extraordinary actor and an exceptional young man,” she says. “He has a wonderful openness coupled with a rare honesty that made working with him an absolute joy.” Rupert Evans and Chloe Rowley co-star.

www.glasgow-news.com continued from front page “There is still so much more we need to do. We’ve made huge progress in the fight against cardiovascular disease, with 70% of heart attack victims now surviving to go home to their families. “With the help of our supporters, we’ll increase investment and accelerate our world-class research that could save the lives of more people that die prematurely. We remain determined to win the fight against cardiovascular

disease, improving the lives of the seven million people living with it and saving those that currently die too young.” The charity has revealed that in order to prevent more premature deaths, the solution is for research to be done further and faster. Professor David Newby, from the University of Edinburgh, said: “Too many people live with and die from cardiovascular disease every day. “But the research we’re pioneering

could help us understand how the heart reacts during a heart attack, which in the long term could lead to more effective treatments.” A Scottish Government spokesman said: “In the past decade we have seen a reduction in death rates from cardiovascular disease due, in part, to the redesign and investment in cardiology services. We are keen to build on this to ensure we continue to strive for improved prevention, treatment and care of heart disease.”

Team Scotland Athletes Parade Announced

Sheridan conviction to be reviewed

The Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission (SCCRC) has announced it will be reviewing Tommy Sheridan’s conviction for perjury. The former Scottish Socialist Party leader and Solidarity MSP was jailed for three years after it was found he committed perjury during a defamation case against the News of the World.

The Team Scotland Athletes’ Parade will be held in Glasgow on Friday, August 15 as an exciting finale to the Commonwealth Games. The route will start at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum at 4.15pm before the seven-strong fleet of vehicles travel through the city to the finish at George Square.

Their support is vital, roaring on our athletes as they proudly compete for Scotland and the Parade will be a fitting finale, where everyone can share in the moment and celebrate the achievements of the Games.” An allocation of 2,500 tickets will also be provided to Games volunteers, with the athletes’ family and friends completing the audience.

Members of the public are being encouraged to line the route, giving the athletes an opportunity to thank them for their support throughout the 11 days of the upcoming Games.

Louise Martin CBE, Chair of sportscotland, said: “The Games are going to be a defining moment for Scottish sport and I can’t wait for them to begin.

Athletes are expected to arrive at George Square at around 5.30pm, where they will be welcomed by an anticipated 5,000 strong audience.

“The excitement and enthusiasm is growing across the country and will continue to build throughout the 11 days of competition.

Announcing the plans for the parade, Jon Doig, Team Scotland Chef de Mission, said: “The Athletes’ Parade is an exciting opportunity for Team Scotland to thank the people of Scotland for their backing throughout the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

away 1,500 of the tickets to members of the public through competitions. Cabinet Secretary for Commonwealth Games and Sport Shona Robison said: “The parade’s atmosphere will be unbelievable. We have already seen the huge numbers of people across Scotland coming out to cheer the baton relay and this is a fantastic opportunity for the people of Scotland to once again show their support and appreciation for all of Team Scotland - not just the athletes but also those who will have contributed to the success.

“I’d urge people from across Scotland to come and be part of this special day, as Scotland celebrates its greatest ever sporting year.”

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council, added: “Glasgow is known the world over for its love of sport and nowhere will that be more evident than at the Athletes’ Parade through our city’s streets. It will give the people of Glasgow one final chance to be part of our Games and to celebrate with the stars of Team Scotland.

George Square will be a ticketed event, with a number of media outlets set to give

“It will be the perfect finale to the best ever Games.”

The paper printed allegations about Mr Sheridan’s private life, including claims about him cheating on his wife and visiting a swingers’ club. Mr Sheridan was awarded £200,000 in damages from the now defunct tabloid in the 2006 case. However, he ended up on trial in 2010 for perjury during the original case and was convicted at the High Court in Glasgow. After being sentenced to a three years in prison, he was released after serving just over a year. The trial featured evidence against Sheridan from high profile witnesses, including former News of the World editor Andy Coulson. Coulson, now serving an eighteen month sentence for his role in the phone hacking scandal, was in court in Glasgow this week to answer charges of giving false evidence against Sheridan in the 2006 trial. Sheridan said: “It has taken a frustratingly long time to progress but at last the SCCRC has the files and my appeal against conviction has been

assessed and considered worthy of more detailed analysis. “I am absolutely confident my unsafe conviction will eventually be quashed and my name will be cleared. “The powerful and well connected liars who coordinated my stitch up will hopefully themselves soon face justice and criminal prosecutions for their efforts to ruin other people’s lives with lies, distortions and illegal activities. “The criminal News of the World shamed the profession of journalism and was rightfully closed down. I will continue to fight the lies and distortions of the powerful gutter press with truth. I look forward to the SCCRC recommendation at the end of March next year.” Sheridan has previously been denied the opportunity to appeal with his legal team arguing that the amount of publicity prior to the case made impossible for a fair trial to take place. Senior judges had rejected this – leaving an appeal to the SCCRC as the only option for Sheridan to get back to court to overturn his conviction. A senior legal officer will investigate the case and will decide if a full appeal should be heard. This decision is not expected to be made for several months. By

16 year old girl sexually Ex-Celtic assaulted in city car park starlet

banned from driving.

Police have opened up an investigation into claims that a 16 year old girl was sexually assaulted in a multi storey car park. The teenager was on the twelfth floor stairwell of the car park in Oswald Street, Glasgow when the attack took place. She was in the company of a seventeen year old boy at the time of the incident. The incident is said to have taken place around 11 am on Tuesday July 29th. Police have asked two people who were in the vicinity of the staircase around about that time to come forward to help move the inquiry forward. A dark haired woman was seen carrying books

into the landing just prior to the attack on the sixteen year old and also shortly after the incident, a man with dark hair and wearing a dark suit passed them on the stairwell. Detective Inspector Craig Willison of Greater Glasgow Division CID, said: “We are keen to trace these two witnesses, who potentially could provide us with information which may help with our enquiry. “Id like to reassure the public that we are following a positive line of enquiry in this case and I would like to reiterate that Police Scotland takes any report of any sexual assault very seriously. “If you are a victim please contact us and we will provide you with the support you need.”

A Glasgow district court magistrate told Chelsea youth player Islam Feruz his driving was “dangerous and outrageous” on Tuesday and handed him an eighteen month ban. The 18 year old arrived in Glasgow from his native Somalia in 2002 and had a spell at Celtic before departing south to join Chelsea. Feruz was convicted of driving a BMW 3 series at speeds of up to 70 mph between George Square and Wishart Street in the city centre on December 2012. The striker was also found guilty of driving with no insurance and not displaying L plates at the time. He was said to have been heading to a flat with friends after a night out at Sugarcube night club on Queen Street.

As well as the ban, Feruz has fined £500 and ordered to pay up within 28 days. In evidence, Feruz admitted he held only a provisional licence at the time of the incident. PC Douglas McMillan described in court how he and a colleague followed Feruz in an unmarked car as he weaved through the city streets at ridiculous speeds. He said: “I’ve never seen driving so bad as I saw that night.” Describing a particular turn as “outrageous”, he added: “The view ahead wasn’t very clear and there were parked cars on either side causing obstruction. He was going at such speed he found it necessary to apex the bend and went on to the wrong side of the road before coming back onto his side of the carriageway.” By

Kirkintilloch town centre pilot scheme. A pilot scheme is being launched in Kirkintilloch town centre in a bid to reduce congestion at one of the town’s busiest junctions. The crossing at Catherine Street and Cowgate will be remodeled in an attempt to change driver behaviour. The change is expected to last four weeks and will also give pedestrians and cyclists the right of way at the junction. It will be under constant supervision by council officials. The trial is set to begin on Monday, August 11, with sign posts having already been placed around the crossing. Council leader Rhonda Geekie said: “The Catherine Street junction with Cowgate is always very busy and reducing traffic disruption – as well as giving pedestrians and cyclists priority – has been identified as one of the goals of the masterplan.

I look forward to seeing the results of this trial and how we can take forward the improvements in Kirkintilloch town centre. Please be aware if you are driving in Catherine Street that there may be some disruption as road users adjust to the changes. However, in the long-term this trial will help to inform the masterplan and our ambitious plans for the town centre.” Information gathered during the scheme will be analysed by council officials, who will then use it to make decisions over future Cowgate Street design works. Police are investigating the possibility that a car theft gang are operating in Stepps after several high value vehicles were stolen from the area. Only last Monday thieves targeted a home on Whitehill Farm Road, where they grabbed designer clothes, jewellery and commandeered stolen cars, using them to escape the scene of the crime. The value of everything stolen during the robbery totalled £80,000 pounds, all whilst the home-owners were asleep in the house. Apparently the thieves managed to gain entry through a downstairs open window and police are positive that a group of individuals are working together to improve the amount of their of ill gotten gains. Last weeks robbery was only one in a long line of robberies in the local area. Commonwealth Games are best ever! By

Glasgow 2014 has been hailed as the best Commonwealth Games ever, in its 84 year history.

Although many Glaswegians would agree, the claim came from Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive Mike Hooper. After the disaster of the Delhi Games in 2010, there were strong fears that the 8 decade old sporting celebration was archaic and had no relevance in the sporting world. Glasgow proved them wrong, and proved there was life in the old dog yet. From the “Disney” happy Glaswegians, to the tourists flocking to the Dear Green Place, Glasgow revelled as host city. Although there were a few hiccups along the way (the rather expensive food, the term “walking distance”, and arguably the queues at the athletics) but minor qualms for a city that proved to the world, we are not degenerates who wouldn’t proverbially urinate on someone if they happened to suddenly have an outbreak of spontaneous flames. To begin with, critics were worried that Scottish fans would refuse to acknowledge other national anthems at the Commonwealth Games, but that

theory was extinguished when The Queen was given a vehicle led tour of Celtic Park on the opening night.

The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow was 11 days of non stop action, passion and fun.

Following that rather unbelievable moment in Scottish history, there was another equally mind-blowing moment, as 40,000 people sang “God Save The Queen” inside the spiritual home of Celtic Football Club.

Heroes were born and future heroes will have been inspired, Scotland also managed to finish fourth overall and helped themselves to nineteen gold medals, our greatest ever tally.

Now re-read that sentence but imagine it being written 20 years ago? Every crowd, in every event, stood in respect for every gold winning athlete’s national anthem, no questions asked. Glasgow has evolved, and so have the people that live in it. Significantly, it has been noticeable throughout the past year. From the Clutha tragedy and the outpouring of collective grief felt throughout the city, to the citywide appreciation given to the fire fighters who saved the Charles Rennie Mackintosh building. Who can forget the “thank you” note dangling on the fire fighter statue, situated outside Central Station, and the way it had been lovingly calligraphed in the Charles Rennie Mackintosh font.

All the home nations had a triumphant Games. England topped the medal table for the first time in 28 years, Wales surpassed their target of 27 and Northern Ireland acquired their countries most medals since the Edinburgh Games of 1986.

Lynsey Sharp showcasing the Scottish spirit by literally dragging herself out of a hospital bed to compete and win silver in the 800m. Only hours after being hooked up to a drip in the athletes village hospital.

Before the games people were worried that the spectacle would be diminished because of athletes withdrawing from the competition.

Or the entire Scottish gymnastics team, showing they have a right to be considered one of the best teams in the world,

However new heroes were born. Who could have foreseen Ross Murdoch upstaging Commonwealth poster boy Michael Jamieson by claiming gold in the swimming.

The staff at Glasgow Central Station although under considerable duress coped admirably with an estimated 3.5 million people passing through the station during the games.

13 year old Erraid Davies achieving a bronze at swimming (the youngest Commonwealth medal winner ever).

There were countless stories that will be spoken of for years to come about the generosity of Glaswegians and their “nae bother” catchphrase.

Charlie Flynn being gobsmacked at winning gold, as well as some of his fantastic, headline making quotes.

Our aim is to offer those in and around Glasgow a more caring and personal service. We realise options may vary in style and cost, but support and guidance in making those decisions is what we do best. We endeavour to keep costs affordable to all, yet maintaining an extremely dignified and highly professional service for you and your loved ones.

Mike Hooper Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive said of the

success of the games “In my view they are the stand-out Games in the history of the movement.” “The way in which the people of Scotland and Glasgow embraced the Games right from the get go has been incredible.” With Glasgow closing the Games by nicking Kylie from the Aussies. The Australian organisers of the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast will have their work cut out for them. The organisers now know that it will take more than great weather to top Glasgow’s feel good factor. Glasgow’s Games?

Games boost for High Street shopper numbers

Figures have shown the Commonwealth Games had a positive impact on Scotland’s high streets as the number of shoppers increased by 13.8 percent on the same period last year. Glasgow, as host city, felt the biggest effect with an increase of 21.9 percent over the same timeframe and a jump of 36.4 percent over the two weeks before the Games.

Dr Stuart Lutton of Ivy Dental with Rob Leggett of the Scottish Denture Clinic.

Research agency Springboard spokeswoman Diane Wehrle said: “Shoppers have been out in force. Historically, major sporting events have had a positive impact on footfall and the Commonwealth Games has been no exception. Footfall across Scotland is up 13.8% year-on-year with Glasgow up 21.9% over the same period.

Games athlete cleared of Guinea pigs abandoned assault charge in park The Papau New Guinea weightlifter accused of sexually assaulting a man in a supermarket toilet has been cleared after a two-day trial.

Toua Udia, 22, denied the charge of touching a man inappropriately at Tesco on Dalmarnock Road on July 21. Sheriff Martin Jones acquitted the athlete with a not proven verdict after stating he was not satisfied the Crown has proven beyond all reasonable doubt the case against Mr Udia. He said: “Having regarded the evidence and all of the circumstances of this case, I am not satisfied that the Crown have proved the case against you and I acquit you on a verdict of not proven.” The court had heard the accuser’s view of events that Mr Udia has touched his testicles while he helped him strap an ice pack onto his calf. The man had immediately told staff at the store, who contacted police.

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after three guinea pigs were abandoned in a Glasgow park.

A security guard at Tesco, Graham Buchanan, told the court Mr Udia had been calm and relaxed when informed there had been a complaint made against him. The 41 year old victim, who cannot be named, denied making up the accusation for attention. Speaking after the trial, defence lawyer Ian Moir said: “Mr Udia has maintained his innocence throughout and is delighted with the outcome of the case. “He now wishes to put this matter behind him and is looking forward to returning to see his family.” By

Scotland’s animal welfare charity was alerted on Wednesday evening (30 July) after a woman walking her dog in Alexandra Park discovered the terrified pets in a cardboard box. The guinea pigs are now in the care of the Scottish SPCA’s Glasgow Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Cardonald. Animal Rescue Officer Jan Toraman said, “The guinea pigs were sniffed out by the woman’s dog. “It was only by chance they were found as they were really well hidden behind trees. “They had been dumped in a cardboard box and two managed to escape when the woman and her dog went near... Thankfully the woman

managed to catch them and kindly took them all home before calling us for help. “This was a very cruel act and the guinea pigs could easily have gone undiscovered. “If anyone knows who abandoned them we would urge them to get in touch. “We’ll look after the guinea pigs until we can find them the loving new homes they deserve.” Anyone with information is being urged to contact the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.

Gold Predictions

8th August - 15th August 2014 | Glasgow News 9

www.glasgow-news.com

Scotland should be proud of the medals and success that has been achieved in the commonwealth games but I was ahead of the game with some of the medal winners I predicted way back in December.

The thinking behind the Commonwealth predictions was I was given a list of athlete’s names to focus on and I was to use my Tarot cards to look at what was to come – here are two of my predictions:

Michael Jamieson – Silver medal I drew the five of cups for Michael and that’s a strong indication for success. it could mean that he faces tougher times than he had at the Olympics in London. If ever a man needed hard work its Michael.

Dan Purvis – Gold medal Good news for Dan. His card was the king of wands, that tells me he has tremendous endurance. He knows what he wants and I knew he was set

for an amazing games. I felt from this card that his determination will be the thing that drives him. His eyes are set on Gold – nothing less. Of course the next sporting event in Scotland is the upcoming Ryder Cup, and I have been looking over my cards for the most promising of golfers. However I will not be releasing any of my findings until the nearer the time.

Glasgow City Council in Chief Executive of Glasgow show of solidarity with City Council set to retire people of Gaza

Glasgow welcomes 500,000 visitor

George Black, the Chief Executive of Glasgow City Council, has announced his intention to retire at the end of 2014. George has worked for Glasgow since 1990 and has been Chief Executive since 2003. The date of George’s departure and the process for choosing a successor will be announced in due course.

Glasgow is Scotland’s cultural powerhouse and this week marked a sensational point when the city’s Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Live Zones recorded their 500,000th visitor.

George said:“It has been a real honour to serve the people of Glasgow as Chief Executive for 11 years.

Following a similar move by West Dunbartonshire Council, the Palestinian flag will fly above the city chambers in Glasgow. Several pro-Palestine marches have taken place in the city in previous weeks as Glaswegians have sought to show support for the people of Gaza. The escalating violence in Gaza has cost thousands of lives already as Israel has stepped up it’s offensive against the people of Palestine in recent weeks. Glasgow

None of that would have happened without the vision and hard work of elected members and council staff and it’s been a real privilege to be part of the team at this exciting time. “However there is still a lot to do and now is the right time to look for a new chief executive to manage the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.” Cllr Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council said: “I want to thank George for his

At 11pm, it was showtime. With an extensive variety from the French Maid and servant, who dropped his trousers to reveal red suspenders, to the Edinburgh Bhangra Crew with their Punjabi dance performance.

Club Noir 10th Birthday Commonwealth Carnival – older, just as bold, and going for gold Walking into the dark bar of the O2 Academy, feathers were flying, glitter was in the air and as a woman wearing nothing but underwear walked past, no one batted an eyelid. Welcome to Club Noir, the biggest, baddest burlesque club night in the world.

One of the highlights for me was Bigg Taj, a beatboxer who sounds like he has an entire musical band in his mouth. His renditions of White Stripes ‘7 Nation Army’ and ODB & Kelis’s ‘Got Your Money’ was outstanding, and the crowd went wild. Another highlight was Tiff Finney, whose mesmerising pole-dancing performance left the crowd stunned, and of course, wanting more. Just when you thought it couldn’t get more bizarre, on walked the Puppet Master, The Great Aldo and his ‘puppet’ who eventually turned the strings on him, getting her revenge. What about the burlesque, you say? There was plenty of it, from Vanity Kills, a Dita Von Teese lookalike to Luke Amour, a ballet burlesque star, we were spoiled. Organiser and burlesque performer Tina Warren performed her act ‘Tina Beans’, standing in a tin of beans, an alternative homage to the famous Martini glass act we all know. We were then treated to a performance by the Dollhouse Burlesque, with their sultry rendition of Happy Birthday. In my opinion, there couldn’t have been a more fitting way to end the Commonwealth Games. With the upbeat buzz that filled the room, the bright lights and sparkle of Club Noir, it was a night to remember.

For more information on upcoming Club Noir events go to www.clubnoir.co.uk/

Club Noir, a club night featuring burlesque shows, DJs and bands, is officially the biggest burlesque club in the world, as recognised by the Guinness World Record with 2,000 attending each event.

Since March 2004, Club Noir has been putting on up to six events a year, each with a theme. This year is was a Commonwealth Carnival theme, to tie in with the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Taking place on Saturday, 3rd August – the day before the closing ceremony – it was a perfect date for everyone to let their hair down after a manic 11 days.

Walking in wearing all black, I felt seriously underdressed. Looking around, there were men in drag, kilts and 3-piece dinner suits and women in latex, corsets and ballgowns. This is a crowd who doesn’t give a monkey’s what anyone thinks of them, the open-minded and the non-judgemental.

Business psychic takes a practical approach to the world’s second oldest profession. The art of intuitively accessing information in ways that expand the boundaries of ordinary reality has been labeled the world’s “second oldest profession.” People exercising this ability have been called oracles, seers, psychics or simply intuitive consultants. Some cultures have bestowed upon them positions of power and authority.

On Wall Street, clairvoyant Alex Tanuos used to work on retainer as a consultant for a brokerage firm president. Los Angeles based psychic Ron Warmoth, also specialized in business affairs. “Newsweek” magazine featured him in the business section. Even Kentucky Fried Chicken tycoon Colonel Sanders was known for inviting his psychic to attend his corporate board meetings.

to hold a ring or car keys or an item of special importance. Since I focus on events from this moment on, I would relay my psychic impressions.

JD: People should explore psychics; I’m a firm believer that much of the information gained can be invaluable. Truth be known, the best business advice

JD: I’m curious, how do psychics predict the future? VLW: Well, some people would say, the future is already here. Take

Psychic Beverly Jaegers and her client Pete Dixon is one of my favorite psychic success stories. The story made “Barron’s” and Jaegers was nominated for “Guinness Book of World Records”. She made her client Pete Dixon a millionaire.

Today I am meeting with JD, a friend who’s flown in from San Francisco, I say “Migel Sancho, a producer with ABC’s Nightline called and he wants me to be a guest on the show. They are producing a segment on ‘corporate psychics’ and he asked if I’d invite three of my business clients to join me,” I say “Initially I was honored they contacted me, but I wanted to be sure they’d incorporate an educational focus; to help people understand how a psychic receives and interprets information – otherwise it’s shrouded in mystery and easily misunderstood.” It had been a little over a year since I had seen JD. He’s an entrepreneur who owns a luxury real estate development company in the U.S. and London. We’ve been friends for over fifteen years and he’s also been a client of mine the majority of those years. He is a private guy who resists professional accolades about his success and wealth. Always impeccably dressed, his dashing good looks should have Hollywood calling for their next leading man. JD: Congratulations! When will you be going on Nightline? You’d make a terrific guest – all that you know about the psychic inner workings. VLW: Per the producer’s request, I contacted three of my clients who I thought would benefit from the national exposure and be eager to

share their experiences of using psychic information in their business decisions. Psychic information is just that, information that is to be used as adjunct to our fact and logic. JD: What types of clients do you contact? VLW: A California entrepreneur who produces a healthy refreshment

‘In December 1974 Pete Dixon, a commodities broker went to see Beverly. He handed her a sealed envelope and asked ‘tell me what you see’. She didn’t have a clue what the envelope contained, but she ran her fingers over it and concentrated. She relayed what she saw: ‘a tree covered with reddish-colored berries.’ She didn’t know what they were, but she saw natives picking them – dark people wearing hats. It was raining hard. They had large baskets but there was only a sprinkling of berries that looked shriveled up. She asked Pete if that meant anything to him.’ Based on her insight, Dixon invested every dime he had – $24,000 – in coffee futures. The rest is history. An unexpected frost affected coffee plants in Brazil – the price of coffee skyrocketed and Pete Dixon became a millionaire. JD: Impressive hit for Jaegers. You’ve made a few equally impressive hits. I recall you offering me insights on Akamai stock. I listened. I invested. I profited over $200,000. So, did your clients accept your invitation to appear on Nightline with you? VLW: My district attorney client was more than willing to participate. He’s frequently consulted with me and other psychics for business and criminal investigative purposes with successful results. A TV movie was produced based on him and his work. The others had unique concerns about appearing on national television; one was campaigning for political office and the other, concerned that public knowledge of him consulting with a psychic would reflect negatively – since he was actively seeking new investors. VLW: But like you, some clients prefer to keep their business consultations private, no matter the source. Meanwhile I sent Sanchez a detailed email pitch outlining

In the days of Imperial Rome, the Senate once required that no law could be passed until the official oracles had been consulted. Great minds have openly expressed a strong and devoted interest in psychic practices including Francis Bacon, Isaac Newton, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Swiss psychologist Carl Jung. I’ve ever gotten has come from you. You help people get to the next level. Is intuition considered psychic ability? VLW: Intuition is reading our own minds as opposed to the minds of others. Intuition is often described as having a “hunch, gut-instinct, an unexplainable feeling.” Author Gary Zukav describes intuition as the walk-talkie between our personality and our soul - that our soul communicates with us through our intuition. JD: How can you or other psychics predict the future? VLW: Interesting question. I used to debate with a college professor – ‘our thoughts become embedded into objects and our destiny is braided into our thoughts – the future events have to spark from today’s planning or action. I believe that our vibrations or thoughts – known and unknown become embedded into our tangible objects. For me, when consulting with a client in person, I would ask

Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. What Einstein and others clearly saw is that the past, present and future are laid out in continuum. They are a single thread of still existing, currently existing, and pre-existing states of affairs. The limitation of our own consciousness prevents the average person or psychic from seeing too far ahead or too far into the past. JD: And… I’m confused. VLW: The future is already here! Meaning, the psychic who sees you investing in a new home in Palm Beach next year is not projecting something into nothing – a real event into non-existent space-time. Rather the psychic is using an expanded perspective to see farther into a domain where your job change or real estate acquisition has already taken place. Tarot Card of the Week Soul Foods The tarot is an ancient and powerful divination tool that has been used for centuries, its hard to pin point exactly where it originated but what we do know is that the rich and famous have consulted it to assist them in their life. Using the tarot the reader taps into it’s hidden mysteries and symbolic connections to provide the client with what lie ahead and from there they make their own choices and decisions. Each week I will be taking a look at one card from the deck and explaining what it means.

This week I have chosen

The Tower:

The Tower is number sixteen in the major cards and is both the worst card in the deck and the best – it brings with it chaos and challenge where perhaps you hadn’t expected it and it pulls the rug from under your feet. I call it the dark night of the soul card however, when the crisis passes there is a light at the end of the tunnel and when you look back there will have been a huge transformation that’s taken place as you arrive at a new destination therefore, the journey has been worth it. This can also be a kind of “ you reap what you sow” card and it comes with little warning but it is always worth remembering that once the storm passes you will arrive at calmer shores bearing new gifts.

C rystal Power The R ose Q uartz

Have you ever thought about the food you put into your mouth and the quality of your health and the life you live? Have you ever thought about the powerful vibration of the foods you eat? Soul foods can help to sooth your soul, which has a domino effect bringing about huge and positive shifts creating wonderful ripples throughout your physical, mental and emotional well-being. Those ripples flow into other areas such as; you’re love life and all other relationships from family members to work colleagues and friendships too. Many years ago after living one dysfunction after another, just at the point of suffering enough I was truly blessed to discover Naturopathic Nutrition. After some study and applying it to my own life I began to slowly heal, I was truly astonished to see how using soul foods I could begin healing the deepest parts of my soul which is where the blind spots were and these were the parts that were holding me in a very dysfunctional space. Working gently over the years I was able to transform my own life from chronic fatigue, depression and panic attacks, to a place where I had created good health and well being, creating a life I love and enjoy. I qualified as a yoga teacher and practice regularly, I love walking in nature, love photography and care for my mother, I have positive relationships, eat an abundance of goodness and feel happy inside and fulfilled, something I once would never have dreamed of. The connections between people and their foods and drink choices indicate

how they are sabotaging their dreams. I discovered that foods are either “feeling foods” or “suppressive foods”. The more suppressive the foods are the more likely we are to be ill and continually attract more of the same dysfunctions. Soul foods = cellular cleansing = cellular healing = soul transformation = life transformation = happy people = healthy people = contentment = peace = fulfillment = magnet for positivity. Without the correct foods healing cannot take place at the deepest part of us. Our cells contain memories, as do our organs, tissue and muscles. We hold what we have lived, some of this positive and some of it will be a magnet to destructive circumstances. Not one of us sets out to hurt or destruct ourselves through our food choices, but day by day this is an increasing epidemic world wide, we have become so cut off from our real selves due to inherited pain and wounds which are creating more of the same. These foods naturally align us with our higher self, and to our inner truth. Often we seek fulfillment outside of ourselves, much to continual disappointment our lives fail to match our desires, or what we know deep down that we deserve. You can find these foods in nature, fruits, vegetables, proteins, herbs, seeds, certain grains, and certain oils and last but most important water. These all help us to evolve to a higher place and we can then listen to our body and inner wisdom to know what is right for who we truly are. The frightening problem with suppressive

By Karen McMurchy foods is what I call the “boiling kettle syndrome” the pressure has to go somewhere. Our pent up incoming day to day and past energy naturally wants to release, but if we consume suppressive foods like sugar, caffeine, dairy, yeast, wheat, and fizzy chemical cocktails we are creating a very contractive cellular environment where we become so cut off from our truth and we cannot access feelings to let go. Illness is very much created in this manner. I love the way I can apply a green juice, relaxation and journal my feeling’s to relieve a headache, gone are the days of popping a pill and pushing down what is really going on for me. I feel into how I am feeling and learn from what is really upsetting me. When I feel sad I know intuitively what soul foods to go for to warm my heart and my soul, I have learnt to self sooth which leaves me in a self sufficient place compared to many years ago, where I once lacked fulfillment, this lead me to searching for it in many wrong areas. Who would have thought a bowl of nutritious food would hit the spot time and time again. The more in touch you become with your soul, you will slowly align with nature and all things nurturing to your well being, addictions will slowly subside and craving’s will be satisfied and you will naturally resonate to the new found way of living. When you do this there is NO room for the destructive patterns to take route and you simply flourish, glow and grow.

Did you know? Psychics often receive information in the form of symbols and images and they tap into these in order to work out what they mean before they deliver the information to the client. It sounds a bit like “ give us a clue” and to be honest, it can be like this at times but - it becomes the norm. Symbols come from the deep

subconscious mind and are there to represent a piece of information so for example; a star may mean you have ambitions you want to achieve but, it could also mean that a loved one who has passed is now your star in heaven. It depends on what the psychic feels and what they feel it represents for the person they are reading for.

Joan Charles

I am delighted to be delivering your stars although; I won’t be doing them in the traditional way, as I am not an astrologer. For many years I have provided the stars using Tarot cards and that is what I will be doing here so, I guess in a sense they should be called, Taroscopes. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy what the cards have to say.

Aries

If you are feeling stuck in a rut and not getting anywhere then perhaps its because you are looking at things from the wrong view point. In actual fact it feels like you have everything you need at your disposal if you just look.

Taurus Emotions may be running high due to a connection to the past that has stirred feeling up that had been long buried. The main thing is not to allow your feelings to control you so take control and get back to normality.

Gemini

Life is full of ups and down and it could be this week brings a few bumps along with it however, once you get things into perspective then you will soon be feeling quite proud of yourself and your achievements.

Cancer Pennies from heaven might come your way and it feels like they will come in the nick of time to help you out of a situation that was beginning to feel a little uncomfortable. Now you can relax a bit.

Leo

Where work is concerned you are in a good place and because of this could be given new duties and or responsibilities to handle. I’m even sensing this could be a promotion as a result of your hard work.

Virgo

Ops, just when you thought everything was tiding along quite nicely something comes along to pull the rug from under you – the good news is in some strange way this will actually work in your favour.

Libra New chapters are about to take place in and around your life and

it feels quite exciting as you take a leap into the unknown with confidence. It feels like you have reached a goal and not its time to celebrate.

Scorpio Cash and financial success is what I am seeing for you. Its like a wee money tree has sprouted and you are about to take advantage of there ripe pickings. Make sure you do so wisely.

Sagittarius

A younger male could receive some good news that means its time to get the champers out to celebrate. It’s been a hard slog for him but now he is onto the next leg of the journey.

Each week Joan will provide messages from your loved ones in the spirit world with the aim of providing comfort. This week Joan is answering some of the readers letters. If you have a need to know about a loved one in spirit write or email Joan at the address below.

SPIRIT CONNECTIONS Dear Joan

Can you tell me if my Son is at peace on the other side, he passed away under difficult circumstances and I just need to know if he is at peace? Isobel – Glasgow My sense is that your son is indeed at peace as spirit do not take with them any earthly issues however, I do feel that his passing was a shock and that there was no time to say goodbye to him, this is what upsets you the most. I feel that there is a great sense of injustice around the passing and that you are still in the process of

trying to balance this both in your own mind and in terms of authority. He would want you to be at peace and so remember that he loves you very much and is with you always.

SPIRIT CONNECTIONS Dear Joan

Can you tell me if my mother knew I was with her when she went to spirit? I looked after her and wanted her to have the best care but towards the end she was not conscious a lot of the time and so I wanted to know if she heard me talking to her? Arlene – Govan

I firstly have to tell you that hearing is the very last sense to go so your mother I am sure would have

heard you speaking to her. I am connecting with her energy and sense that she wants you to know that you love her and that you were always there to help her. She was quite a proud woman and liked her independence and so found it hard when she couldn’t do for herself however she had the best person in the world to do this in you. You asked her to give you a sign that she was still with you when she passed over and this is it. Joan will also be answering your letters so email her at: joan.charles@btopenworld.com Joan Charles Perception Brook Street Studios, Suite 2/6 60 Brook Street, Glasgow G40 2AB

Capricorn

For the week ahead its very much about using your intuition and going with it – you can be quick to jump into situations but you are being asked to sense check things before you do anything rash.

Aquarius

Looking at some kind of past knowledge or information is going to assist you in some way with where you are now. There is recognition for the work and effort you have done and a Capricorn star sign will assist you

Pisces Stability and security are all in the right place and just the way you like them. You have been cautious in a situation and now it could be paying off in a positive way for you. Money and cash are on your side.

Tunnocks Tea Cake Ice Cream

The next big craze?

2014/2015 When they saw the dancing tea cakes spinning in the sun during the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games 2014, Glasgow based design company ‘Eat Haggis’ were inspired to think what could possibly make this any better? The answer came to them in a flash, icecream always makes things better. They set about testing and tasting (tough work) various combinations of ingredients until they finally cracked it just in time to sit back and enjoy their hard labour while watching the closing ceremony. They decided to share the results of their work by posting the recipes on Twitter and were amazed by the result. They proved a huge hit within minutes and Tunnock’s

Ice Cream may be the next big craze. The lead designer of the company Allistair Burt said: “As seen in the opening ceremony, the humble Tunnocks Teacake is a much loved Scottish symbol and we could think of no greater tribute than to turn it into a delicious ice cream. We surprised ourselves with how tasty the results were or how popular the idea would be when we shared our recipes on social media. It was difficult to choose which flavour was the best, so we settled for having large scoops of both. Now we just need Tunnock’s and Mackie’s to team up and produce these for real, so we can all buy them in the shop. We think they would be a massive hit.”

A ‘pure dead brilliant’ ending to the Commonwealth Games On Sunday the biggest sporting and cultural event in Glasgow’s history was brought to an end at Hampden Park, amid a uniquely humorous and quintessentially Glaswegian celebration. The ceremony opened with one of Glasgow’s most famous musical exports Lulu, performing her seminal hit song, ‘Shout’ amid what appeared to be a section of the T in the park camping area transplanted into the country’s national stadium. When the opening bars of the song began, to the surprise of audience, the

Commonwealth athletes, emerged from the tents accompanied by hundreds of performers. Lulu and the athletes were immediately followed by renowned Scots rockers Deacon Blue who provided the musical backdrop to a parade, thanking everyone involved in the success of the Games, for their hard-work and generous nature.

The assorted group paraded holding aloft a banner sporting the city’s motto ‘Let Glasgow Flourish’ apt for those who were so integral in ensuring that Glasgow did over the course of the Games, especially with the eyes of the world upon the city. Following the council workers and emergency services parade, local band Prides introduced a parade of the

Following this the Royal Edinburgh Tattoo entered the stadium, accompanied by flag bearers from all 71 countries of the Commonwealth from the opposing end of Hampden, meeting in the centre amongst the throng of athletes and volunteers.

This statement was followed by Lord Smith saying Glasgow, ‘is a city that dares to dream, it’s a city made by it’s people and we look out for each other, this is an experience we will never forget. Thank you Glasgow and thank you Scotland, you’ve done us proud.’’

The stage was then taken by Lord Smith of Kelvin, who in a speech praised everyone involved in the Games saying: ‘Tonight we are a Commonwealth connected, sport unites us, it brings us together; sport transcends nationality, language and politics. Sport has the power

FRIDAY 8 - THURSDAY 14 AUGUST

Will, Jay, Neil and Simon head Down Under in this raunchy sequel to the record-breaking comedy. Last time we met the Rudge Park posse, they were causing chaos in Malia, Crete. Nearly a year on, Will (Simon Bird), Jay (James Buckley), Neil (Blake Harrison) and Simon (Joe Thomas) have gone their separate ways. Jay is staying with his uncle in Australia. Neil has actually managed to get a job. And Simon and Will are at different universities, but life isn’t panning out as they’d hoped. So when Jay emails to say he’s now become the biggest DJ in Australia and his life is one long party, the threesome need no encouragement to leap on a plane for a wild Easter break. Creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris take over as co-directors of this eagerly anticipated sequel to the most successful British comedy of all time. Expect outback mayhem and big laughs!

THE UNBEATABLES (U) Rupert Grint, Rob Brydon, Ralf Little, Anthony Head, Peter Serafinowicz, Alistair McGowan, Eve Ponsonby. Rupert Grint leads the voice cast of this magical 3D family animation about a football-mad boy who triumphs against the odds. Amadeo (Rupert Grint) is a young lad who works in his family’s bar in a small village. One day, he humiliates local bully Flash (Anthony Head) by beating him at a game of table football. Many years later, Flash returns to exact his revenge. Now the world’s biggest football star, he unveils a plan to demolish Amadeo’s bar and build a giant stadium in its place! When Amadeo sheds a tear over this dastardly scheme, something amazing happens. It brings to life his plastic table football team! Together, they set out to thwart the nasty Flash. Juan Jose Campanella, director of the Oscar-winning drama ‘The Secret in Their Eyes’, turns his hand to animation with this clever, funny and touching family animation. The outstanding voice cast also includes Rob Brydon, Ralf Little and Peter Serafinowicz.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (12A) A human adventurer teams up with a band of alien misfits to save the galaxy in this thrilling new Marvel superhero epic. Roguish Earthman Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), AKA Star-Lord, has got himself into a whole heap of trouble. He’s stolen an orb, which is also coveted by villainous psycho Ronan (Lee Pace). Ronan will stop at nothing to retrieve the mysterious artefact. This forces our charismatic anti-hero to forge an alliance with an unlikely quartet of rival cosmic outlaws. His crew comprises vengeance-crazed warrior Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), guntoting Rocket the raccoon (Bradley Cooper), green-skinned deadly assassin Gamora (Zoe Saldana), and tree-like humanoid Groot (Vin Diesel). But when Quill learns of the orb’s real power, a last-ditch battle for the galaxy ensues! This awesome new addition to the Marvel cinematic universe also features a shaven-headed Karen Gillan as Ronan’s sidekick Nebula and introduces Josh Brolin as the voice of sinister supervillain Thanos.

STEP UP: ALL IN (12A) Stars of the previous Step Up films come together for the ultimate incredible dance battle! Sean (Ryan Guzman) and his dance crew have been struggling for more than a year to get their break in Hollywood. He soldiers on after everyone else gives up, refusing to abandon his dream. Then he hears of a dance contest in Las Vegas. This could provide the breakthrough he’s been looking for, as the winners get their own show. Now he needs to assemble a new crew. He teams up with Moose (Adam Sevani) and Andie (Briana Evigan), recruiting such familiar faces as the Santiago Twins (Martin Lombard) and Jenny Kido (Mari Koda). This stunning spectacle is led by Ryan Guzman from ‘Step Up 4: Miami Heat’ and Briana Evigan from ‘Step Up 2: The Streets’. It brings together nearly a dozen of our favourite dancers from the previous four ‘Step Up’ movies for the showdown to end them all!

o say The Village (Sunday, BBC1, 9pm) is bursting at the seams with top British talent would be something of an understatement. This time around, the plot moves into the roaring 1920s, and the arrival of the jazz age has radically changed old

perceptions of love, sex and politics. However, Bert soon comes up with a money-making plan to help out his father when boxer Ghana Jones, who has been

barred from fighting professionally because of the colour of his skin, offers allcomers a chance to take him on.

Maria Dingwall Bentley Executed ITV, 9pm In the summer of 1964, the last two men to be hanged in Britain were executed, simultaneously, in Liverpool and Manchester. Fifty years on, this documentary revisits the stories of those sentenced to death by the state – some guilty, some innocent – hearing from their relatives and people who witnessed the final days of capital punishment. In 1953, Derek Bentley was hanged for the murder of a policeman even though he didn't fire the fatal shot. His niece Maria talks about her family's 45-year fight to prove his innocence. Narrated by Samuel West.

The

Big

Review!

I have a confession to make. I hate flossing my teeth. I hate the feel of it, the sound of it and my biggest fear is it getting stuck between my teeth. Ridiculous, I know. So when I first heard about the Philips Sonicare Airfloss, I was intrigued. The Airfloss is a tooth-cleaning device that claims to “cleans between your teeth where brushing cannot”. So does it do what it says on the tin? I put it to the test. It works by filling it with water or mouthwash and placing it between your teeth at the gum, then pressing the button where the liquid shoots out. It looks a bit like a standard electrical toothbrush, except for the thin spout at the top. It comes with a charger, and it includes a quick start guide as well as a more intensive set of instructions. The battery life is great also, as one session of charging should last 14 uses (two weeks when used daily). One thing I should mention is that it is a European plug, so you’ll need an adapter. You can pick these up fairly cheap at Pound Shops. After charging it for 24 hours I was good to go. The water shoots out m u c h s t ro n g e r than I was

expecting, it’s not at all painful though. It may take a few tries to get used to it, the first time I was spraying water and dribbling everywhere – not a hot look. However, once you get the hang of it it’s really simple to use. They key is to close your lips to hold it in place, not like the models on the box who have a wide grin as they use it. The button can also be pressed down to release steady bursts which makes it easier.

So, does it actually work? It is hard to tell, as it is designed to remove plaque, which is invisible. However, after a few weeks using it, my teeth look slightly pointier at the gum line which means the gums are less inflamed. I have still been using dental floss occasionally, but in conjunction with the AirFloss, I am using less. Overall, I am really pleased with this product and as a floss-hater I can now floss my teeth with a smile on my face - with my lips closed!

www.glasgow-news.com

Top Tips on Flossing! Philips Oral Healthcare Expert, Mhari Coxon RDH, shares her top tips on flossing...

then you should visit a dental professional for some advice.

Flossing is more important than brushing – It’s true! When we brush we only reach 60% of the tooth surface. The bit between our teeth is where bad bacteria can live and cause permanent damage to teeth and gums.

You cannot see the bacteria that cause the damage to your gums with the naked eye so only flossing if you have food stuck is not enough. You can’t always see the benefit but you can feel the benefit in healthy gums and teeth.

People often think that flossing itself makes their gums bleed and they should therefore stop flossing. This is a myth – if you see blood on brushing or flossing it is normally because you have inflamed gums – gingivitis. In most cases, cleaning well for one week will stop it and make the gum healthy again. If the bleeding doesn’t stop or gets worse

Mouthwash does not do the same job as flossing! Mouthwashes can be a great addition to your oral routine but cannot effectively replace the removal and disruption of bacteria that happens with brushing and flossing. Flossing also gets rid of the food debris that are most often the cause of bad breath.

The Smart Girl’s Guide to...

Whiter teeth

A gleaming white, hollywood smile is on the list of about every woman’s wish list. While these tips won’t give you a dazzling set of gnashers overnight, they will certainly help prevent staining in the first place...

Ditch the dark drinks

Red wine, black tea and coffee are the biggest causes of stained teeth, as well as smoking. Try to cut down and see if you notice a difference, or drink through a straw.

Floss, floss, floss!

Many don’t realise that plaque gathering in between teeth causes staining. Flossing regularly will clean that out, resulting in cleaner, whiter teeth.

Strawberry smiles

There are claims that strawberries have a certain ingredient that whitens teeth. Whether it’s actually true or not we don’t know, especially as strawberries are very acidic. Other claims say to rub the insides of a banana skin or orange skin on your teeth... sounds crazy I know but while these don’t have acid in the skins, why not give it a try!

Certain lipsticks can make teeth appear whiter. If your teeth have an off-white tone, avoid deep, dark and bright shades. Instead try nude shades or pinks that have bluish undertones.

Tantastic!

Having a tan is a great instant teeth whitener. If you aren’t lucky enough to have a real tan from being on holiday try fake tan. Having a healthy, bronzed glow will make teeth and the whites of your eyes pop. By

What was the name of Dorothy’s dog in The Wizard of Oz?

Ingredients

150 grams milk chocolate • 50 grams butter 60 ml golden syrup • 135 grams rice krispies

Answer on page 7

Break the chocolate up and with a grown up helper, melt in a large bowl over a pan of simmering water, making sure the water doesn’t touch the bowl. Over a low heat, this will take about 4 minutes. Once the chocolate has melted, with your helper, fold the chocolate, then add the butter and syrup and stand for a minute or so before gently folding in, then remove the bowl from the pan. Pour in the rice krispies and then fold until everything is mixed and turn into your baking tray. Smooth the mixture in the tray to make an even layer. Put in the fridge to set; this will take 1-2 hours. Cut into squares. Can be stored in an airtight container.

The Smart Girls Guide to...

DIY

DIY and decorating can be such hard work. So sometimes it’s better just to get stuck in and get it over and done with. We have put together some top tips whether you’re a DIY pro or just a beginner, i’m sure there are a few ideas here you will find useful... Fix a squeaky door by sprinkling talcum powder on the hinges. This also works for squeaky floorboards. Use baby oil to remove paint from your skin. Add two teaspoons of vanilla essence to one-and-a-half litres of paint to reduce overbearing paint smells. Make threading a needle easier by squirting the thread with hairspray to make it stiff.

Use dental floss to quiet a dripping tap until you can get it fixed. Tie one end of the floss around the tap and the other end of the dental floss down the drain. The drips travel along the thread instead of dripping into the sink. To prevent paint dripping onto the floor, glue a paper plate to the bottom of the paint can. The plate should be five to eight centimetres wider than the can so it can catch drips To prevent screws from coming loose, put a drop or two of clear nail polish into the hole before you finish tightening the screw. Wrap a rubber band round an open tin of paint, scrape the brush against it to remove excess paint. By

PROPERTY

Too old at forty for a mortgage Life begins at forty? Not if you’re trying to get on the property ladder with a mortgage it doesn’t

Some of Britain’s top mortgage lenders are refusing to permit customers over the age of forty from borrowing for the pursuit of a mortgage. When banks are being begged to lend more money to help jump start the economy, in many occasions, banks are actually making it harder for people to borrow off them. Borrowers and being asked to supply the banks with evidence to support their retirement income from their state pension age, regardless of whether they intend to continue

working through it. Halifax and Nationwide have recently introduced new rules for customers who want to borrow into retirement. The two major lenders now determine the point of retirement as the customers predetermined retirement age or the state pension age, whichever is lower. Customers in their early forties, with excellent incomes are finding it increasingly hard to borrow enough for a mortgage. Nationwide are even requesting borrowers have a private pension before they will consider lending them money. Alan Lakey a financial adviser at Highclere Financial Services said

two of his clients, a husband and wife aged 52 and 46 applied to Nationwide for a £111,000 loan over the course of 15 years on the back of a £250,000 pounds property and the couple found themselves subsequently denied. The reason being? The husband would have been 67 at the end of the loan and he wasn’t paying into a pension. Mr Lakey said “There is a lot of foolish, tick box decision-making at the moment, there is no logical explanation why borrowers such as these should not be approved for a loan.” By

PROPERTY Is the Help to Buy scheme facing discontinuation? Hamilton Grand... Grand by name, The much lauded Right to Buy Grand by nature scheme, in which the Government ISG has successfully completed a £15.6 million redevelopment of the iconic Hamilton Grand building in St. Andrews for The Kohler Co. – owners of the fivestar Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort and Spa.

helps prospective new home owners the opportunity to purchase their house.

The Government promised to lend the future home owners 20% percent of their total mortgage to ensure they qualified for the home deposit. Lloyds Bank have reduced the amount they will lend to first time buyers to £150,000 pounds. Down from a startling £500,000 pounds which in real terms is a reduction of 70% percent. With Lloyds dropping the amount they’re willing to lend, property experts are afraid that Lloyds’ main competitors will swiftly follow suit. Experts are worried that Bank Of Scotland, Halifax or R.B.S will feel the need to drop the amount they lend to first time buyers and make it harder for said first time buyers to purchase their first home in an already impossible housing market. Lloyds is currently in control of 50% percent of all the Help to Buy market. Last week ministers released figures

that showed nearly 40,000 people had benefited from the Government backed scheme and used it to to buy a house. Critics of the scheme however have been quick to point out that the Help to Buy market can fuel a housing price bubble which in the long run can be harmful to the security of the economy. In Scotland, the Help to Buy scheme, ran out of funding three months into its first year and there were complaints that the Scottish Government failed to aim the scheme at first time buyers and lower cost properties, instead the scheme was offered on houses with a value upto £400,000 pounds, more than twice the cost of an average house in Scotland.

Andrew Mickel of multi award winning firm Mactaggart & Mickel said “first time buyers or those looking for cheaper properties were not put any higher in the queue than those wanting a £400,000 pound house.” He continued “Help to Buy has been a game changer for the industry. It has moved everything forward and brought more confidence and momentum back into the market, but now we learn that the scheme has ran out of money. “We would much rather have steady, sustainable growth without peaks and troughs.” By

The landmark property has undergone a stunning transformation into one of Scotland’s most exclusive residential addresses. Hamilton Grand boasts 26 stunning apartments in two, three and four-bedroom configurations, together with a private residents’ lounge and courtyard garden and sixth floor roof deck. Built in 1895 as The Grand Hotel, this iconic building, which overlooks the Old Course in St Andrews, is the second most photographed building in the world of golf after the R&A headquarters. Then as now, the property was the height of luxury – the first building in Scotland to have a pneumatic elevator running between guest floors as well as hot and cold running water in every bathroom, setting the benchmark for the ultimate in hospitality. An important element of the project has seen ISG reinstate one of the

building’s most distinctive features – its roof-mounted pepper pot domes. One of these domes was destroyed by fire in the 1980s and replaced with a fibreglass replica. ISG used the same materials and techniques to create an authentic replacement dome, which was subsequently craned into position and now overlooks the Old Course. Alan McCarthy-Wyper, managing director of ISG’s Construction business, said: “Those wishing to own an exclusive home, rich in heritage in the heart of the birthplace of golf need look no further than Hamilton Grand. “It is a great privilege to have supported The Kohler Co. achieve its vision for the property after being entrusted with bringing this iconic building back to life for future generations to come.”

Driverless cars set for UK Young males are worst drivers

It may seem like something out of a science fiction film, but driverless cars could soon be a fixture on UK roads. The government has announced plans to trial the cars - guided by sensors and cameras – in the UK starting in January 2015. Cities will be given the chance to bid to be the first to share in a £10 million fund to cover the costs of the trials, with three being selected to take part for a period of 18 to 36 months. The real question is, are British motorists ready to give up control of their cars to computers? There is an element of fear over the idea, with a huge amount of trust having

to be placed on the car and its ability to keep the driver and passengers safe. However, human error contributes to many road accidents and automated features like self-braking are already in place because the technology is at times able to recognise hazards more effectively than a human driver. Other countries, including America, Japan and Sweden, already have driverless cars in use on their roads. Google’s version has already travelled over seventy thousand miles on California’s roads, while Gothenburg will see one thousand self-driving Volvos launch in 2017. Google say their ultimate goals is for

The Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has revealed that a 24 year old woman passed her driving test on her 24th attempt.

cars to “shoulder the entire burden of driving”. It seems more likely that a hybrid of driver and computer controlled will be the outcome in the short term, with drivers retaining the option and responsibility of taking over control themselves. However, as the general public becomes more accustomed to giving up control and comfortable with the safety of driverless cars, surely it won’t be long before traditional driving is a thing of the past and long, boring commutes are taken care of while we text or watch television or even sleep? Poll reveals dishonesty of drivers

Apoll commissioned by ContractHireAndLeasing. com has found that nearly a third of all drivers would consider leaving the scene of an accident after causing minor damage, whereas 4% per cent of drivers would leave the scene even if there was extensive damage caused due to an accident.

The DVSA have awarded her the title of the most persistent learner driver, after qualifying in Chippenham last year.

Scotland have been found to be the most honest drivers however honesty amongst drivers has varied wildly between age, location and income groups.

The unnamed woman was one of eight British people to take more than 20 tests by the end of 2013.

63% per cent of Scottish drivers would make sure they could be contacted about repairs after an accident.

Statistics released also showed that 10 drivers gained a total of 200 fails between them before passing. Of these drivers six were women and four were men.

Wales also fared well in the honesty stakes with only 1% per cent of drivers saying they would leave the scene of a minor accident, if they damaged someone else’s car.

New figures from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) have shown that male drivers between 20 and 30 years of age were the most likely to be disqualified from driving between July 2013 and June 2014. The statistics come from the DVLA following a freedom of information request by the IAM and highlight what age groups most commonly carry out driving offences that subsequently lead to a driving ban. In the twelve months leading upto 21 June, 92,136 people in the UK were banned from driving – with two-thirds of that number still disqualified. Overall men far outnumber women in number of offences leading to bans, with women making up less than fifteen percent of the overall number in the past year. The peak age for banned drivers appears to be 25 with 3,748 people of this age serving a ban in the time period. The number of banned drivers in each age group drops dramatically as the bracket increases. While 36,0001 people between 20 and 30 years old were disqualified, 10,025 in their fifties

and just 3,874 in their sixties were. The most incredible statistic the figures reveal is that 230 people aged under 17 and therefore the legal age to hold even a provisional licence were currently banned. This number includes four 12 year olds and four 13 year olds. Chief executive of IAM, Simon Best said: “These statistics strongly reflect the research we have already carried out in this area – that young males are very much the at risk group when it comes to driving safety. “We believe targeting the attitudes of these drivers specifically, through advanced training for example, should be a major part of future road safety campaigning. Reducing offending in this age bracket would dramatically improve safety on our roads for all road users. “It is also of great concern that youngsters not even eligible to hold a provisional licence are being banned at such young ages. Parents need to be aware their children are putting their own lives and those of others at huge risk by taking the wheel of a car on public roads.” By

Public urged to speak out to stop the UK’s million drug drivers

Members of the public are being urged to stand up to illegal drug drivers, as a survey by Brake and Direct Line finds the equivalent of one million UK drivers admit driving on drugs in the past year and just over one in ten think they may have been a passenger with one. At the same time, three in 10 admit they wouldn’t always speak out to stop a friend driving on drugs. The findings come shortly before a new law, coming into force on 2 March 2015, will make it an offence to drive with drugs in your body across Britain, aiming to make it much easier to prosecute drivers on drugs. Brake and Direct Line’s survey findings suggest an alarming level of ignorance or complacency about the effects of illegal drugs, especially among male and young drivers: Three in 10 wouldn’t always speak out if a friend was going to drive on drugs, and a significant one in 20

wouldn’t speak out even if their friend was clearly out of control. Young people and men are also most likely to have possibly or definitely been a passenger with a driver on drugs. 18% of young drivers and 15% of male drivers say they have been in this situation in the past year. The drug drive law coming into force in March will make it a criminal offence to drive under the influence of drugs, with specified zero-tolerance limits enforced with roadside drug testing devices. Those found guilty will face a maximum six month jail sentence, £5,000 fine, and automatic 12 month driving ban. The law is also known as Lillian’s Law, after 14 year old Croydon school girl Lillian Groves, killed outside her home by a speeding driver on cannabis in June 2010. The tireless campaigning of her family has been instrumental in changing the law, and was honoured by Brake through an award last year. Natasha Groves, Lillian’s mum, said: “Lillian was a wonderful young girl who did not deserve to die. She lit up rooms and gave

AGAINST ALL ODDS With league football set to resume in Scotland at the weekend, time is running out to get your money on season long bets before the big kick off. In the SPFL, Aberdeen look strongest outwith Celtic. They looked impressive in Europe knocking out a good Groningen team before giving a good account of themselves away to La Liga outfit Real Sociedad.

With the huge success of the Commonwealth Games, Glasgow has demonstrated its capability to host major sporting events which has benefited its chance of being a host city for the Euro 2020 football championship.

announced on 19 September. Hampden Park is the stadium that has been put forward from Scotland and the Scottish Football Association will be hoping it is confirmed as one of the venues next month.

The next tournament – set for France in 2016 – will continue traditional format before a switch to spread the matches across the continent to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the championship.

Commonwealth Games Scotland chairman Michael Cavanagh has said the experience of hosting the Games so shortly before the decision should work in Glasgow’s favour ahead of the decision.

Nineteen bids from cities across Europe were submitted in April and the thirteen successful nations will be

He said: “I think Glasgow must be very well placed to win major sporting events after the success of these Games.

But a Euro 2020 would be fantastic for the city. Glasgow as a city and Scotland as a country have done no harm at all in showing what we can do when handed major sporting events. It’s so complex staging a Games because there’s so many small aspects to running them, but it’s really hard to pick out anything we could have done better.” Scotland had previously bid to host the 2008 Euro Championship in a joint bid with Ireland, however they lost out to Austria and Switzerland. The Dons will be hoping goals from Adam Rooney and new signing David Goodwillie will be enough to fire them to second this season. Take them at 13/8 to win the premiership without Celtic. In England, the Premier League doesn’t start for another week but the rest of the leagues resume on Saturday. The Championship is always a tough league to call, but after coming so close last season I like Derby to put play-off heartbreak behind them and win the league this year. A young, talented squad and with Steve Mclaren there for the whole season this time, 8/1 looks generous – with ¼ odds available for a top three finish. On Sunday we have the glorified friendly that is the Community Shield, usually I would recommend staying away from such game but why not make it interesting? Arsenal at 23/10 is tempting value, the addition of Sanchez should be huge for the gunners this season and they have the desire to keep lifting silverware after an eight year drought was ended with the F.A. Cup.

Only gamble with money you can afford to lose

Rangers edge past Hibs in Petrofac Cup Rangers did just enough to sneak past Hibernian in the first round of the Petrofac Training Cup at Ibrox, securing a 2-1 victory after extra time.

The Ibrox faithful welcomed Commonwealth Games heroine Lynsey Sharp before the match as she showed off her silver medal, but with the games in the past it was football back to the top of the agenda in Glasgow, though a fairly sparse crowd might have had you wondering if athletics has taken its place in Glaswegian’s hearts. Rangers’ boss Ally McCoist handed out several debuts, though Kris Boyd and Kenny Miller weren’t exactly

unsure of what to expect in making their first competitive starts since returning to the club. With Bilel Mohsni suspended for his red-card madness against Derby in preseason, Darren McGregor and Marius Zaliukas also made their debuts. Rangers started well, with a goal after just 14 minutes, Lee Wallace surging forward and providing a cross that had too much for Miller but instead found Lewis McLeod who took a touch before firing into the net. Cammy Bell didn’t need his gloves in the first half, but did have Ian Black to thank for clearing a Liam Craig header off the line.

Alan Stubbs, making his managerial bow, may have been worried as his side went in at the half down, having failed to make much impact. The second half, however, saw an energised Hibs side take the game to Rangers and carve out several great scoring opportunities. Stanton and Handling had both went close for the Edinburgh side before the latter finally grabbed the equaliser following an error from Ian Black as he

couldn’t get enough on his back pass to Bell in the Rangers goal. Handling reacted quickest to slam home and restore parity. New signing Farid El Alagui wasted two glorius chances to put Hibs in front before they found themselves down to ten men after goalscorer Handling brought down Rangers sub David Templeton.

The red card seemed to surprise everyone, with the challenge looking worthy of a yellow at worst. The ten men of Hibs held out until extra time, but with twelve minutes gone Nicky Law curled a fine finish past the Mark Oxley in the Hibs’ goal to set up a second round tie with Clyde. By

Attempt to reach third successive Champions League group stage ends with a whimper

Celtic had hoped they could put on a show worthy of the fringe in Edinburgh, instead they were left to pack up their things and head back to Glasgow with a demoralising loss and only the Europa League to think about. Ronny Deila’s side had left themselves a mountain to climb but a three goal turnaround wasn’t insurmountable and given that Celtic had turned around just such a result last season, there was still some hope heading into the game. An early goal and Celtic may have been

able to put pressure on the Polish side, maybe the occasion would get to them, the Celtic Park atmosphere transported into Murrayfield for the night rousing the team into a famous comeback.

In reality there wasn’t much goalmouth action and when Zyro slid the ball past Forster just before half time Legia had converted the first good chance and in doing so ended the tie.

In the end it’s the hope that kills you and very quickly it was apparent that there really was none for Celtic against an organised Legia Warsaw side.

Fittingly another defensive error allowed Legia to double their lead on the hour mark when hesitancy over who would claim the ball between Forster and the Celtic defence allowed Kucharcyk to round the keeper and fire home.

Matthews, Stokes and Biton came into the side for Bergen, Pukki and the suspended Ambrose and naturally Celtic set up to attack and try to chip away at the Legia lead.

Overall, a tie that Celtic were considered favourites for ended in a 6-1 aggregate defeat - nothing if not comprehensive.

Deila must be wondering what he’s got himself into and the fans clearly directed their frustrations and the board and particularly Peter Lawell. The travelling support voiced their displeasure, clearly frustrated over the perceived lack of investment that has left the side looking fragile and toothless. The loss of a huge amount of revenue by failing to be a part of the group stage of the Champions League will be worrying for the board and there are questions over the futures of Fraser Forster and Virgil van Dijk. The pair are highly sought after by Premier League

sides and would net the club the type of money they will now be missing out on. Celtic will now look ahead to the Europa League and perhaps it is for the best – who knows what the Champions League level teams would do to this side. However, the second tier competition fails to capture the imagination like the Champions League and this Celtic side – possibly minus their two best players – will need to improve vastly and quickly to make any impact.
