“She (Pamela’s cousin) said, ‘Oh it was a much more refined London accent than Daniel (Mays), who’s portraying him’. “I said, ‘Well that’s as maybe when he was at home, but you have no idea really… he would probably just have taken on the accent of the men he was with. “In those days you were either posh or you were a worker; the class system was such, and if your accent gave you away that you were a toff then he wouldn’t have had the confidence of the men he was with and trying to get the best from.” Having transcribed Reg’s assorted notes and letters, it gave Pamela a better understanding of her dad, and mother.

time high The number of Scots in employment has reached its highest level since 1992, according to statistics. Figures have revealed that the number of people in employment has increased from April to June 2014 by 63,000 to reach 2,594,000, the Office for National Statistics have revealed. This makes it the highest level since records began. The figures also show that there are more people in Scotland in employment than in the UK as a whole; 73.5% per cent of people are now in employment in Scotland, compared to 73% per cent in the UK.

The unemployment rate is 6.4% per cent, which is the same as the UK. The number of unemployed people has fell by 21,000 with the number of people claiming Jobseekers Allowance falling by 35,500 over the year. Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael said: “Today’s figures show we have a new record high in overall employment. Over the last 12 months, Scottish employment has increased by 63,000 and unemployment has fallen by 21,000.
October 2008 and is 35,500 lower than one year ago. It has also been revealed that female employment has also reached a new record high. Figures show that with 1,250,000 women in Scotland in employment, the total has increased of 36,000 over the year. McMafia on the run as Interpol lends aid
Hibu, the firm who publish the Yellow Pages, have announced their Glasgow office is to close. The move will see almost two hundred people made redundant. This comes as a part of major restructuring for Hibu – whose parent company went into administration in November. The firm also plans to close its Manchester office, while scaling back its operation in Reading. Workers were informed of the decision just weeks after they say they were told their jobs were safe, prompting anger and confusion from employees. A statement from the company said: “Hibu is building a new, highly competitive digital business, while also working to manage our wellestablished core directories business in line with market opportunities.
“To help achieve these goals we have initiated a new programme of proposed cost efficiencies and savings as part of our ongoing restructuring to ensure a sustainable, valuable business. “The programme supports our focus on business operations, initiatives and underlying sales approaches that give the greatest long-term potential and that strongly position us for accelerating digital growth. “Regrettably, as part of this process we anticipate a reduction in our overall UK workforce, primarily through the reduction and consolidation both of our UK telesales and our customer service roles, with a proposed increase in operational activity with our overseas locations.” Hibu have offices in the UK, United States, Argentina, Chile and Peru, with a total of 12,000 employess as of last year. The Scottish Enviroment Protection Agency (Sepa) is getting a little help from international crime fighters to tackle the blight of organised environmental crime. Taking tips from the enforcers who interrupt the flow of organised crime in Italy Sepa is hoping to introduce some of Interpol’s best tactics in putting an end to Scottish gangsters cutting corners or threatening violence to secure waste disposal contacts. The problem in Scotland is in a similar fashion to what happens in the acquiring of waste disposal contracts in the south of Italy. Sepa have pledged to get to the route of the problem, national waste and enforcement manager William Wilson said “Is Scotland a soft touch? I would say it is not. Is there more
to be done? Definitely. How do we compare with other countries? Better than a number.” The Scottish Environment Protection Agency are analysing why waste is deemed so profitable and such an alluring prospect for organised crime. The relative safety involved(far less dangerous than selling drugs, or gun running) and also the regular need for waste to be removed. In the eyes of the law at least waste removal is seen as a clean and relatively stench free from corruption. However Sepa have began to realise that all is not what it seems in the waste disposal industry and one such underhand tactic is mixing low tax waste, which costs no more than £2.50 a tonne compared to high tax waste which costs £80 pounds a tonne. A 3100% per cent increase.
Twelve trips a day and unscrupulous gangsters are making nearly £1000 pounds instead of £25 pounds. William Wilson said “Italy has a wellentrenched problem with Mafia clans, particularly within the waste sector in the southern half of the country. They are anxious to do more in relation to that.” The organised crime sector will be willing to use guns, drugs and a variety of nefarious behaviour to secure valuable contracts. Wilson finished by saying “Organised crime is unlikely just to be involved in environmental crime. “They are about making money, so its about the threat, risk and harm to communities.” By

Ebola virus breaks 1000 death mark The World Health Organisation have released statistics admitting that the Ebola outbreak, which is already the worst Ebola outbreak in human history, has broken the 1000 death mark. This in a week were people in Wales have been tested for the disease and also a man in Madrid died from the fatal and highly contagious disease. With doctors still unable to guarantee that a proposed antidote has any effect on the victim, border controls are bracing themselves for any signs of the destructive plague like disease, but are still unsure how to deal with an outbreak. (WHO) have admitted that the vaccine will not be ready until “next year at the earliest” and they also admitted that there will likely be no cure for the “painful, dreadful, merciless virus” that is currently rampaging its way through West Africa. Director of the World Health Organisation Margaret Chan said. “The outbreak is moving faster than we can control it.”

TEAM NEW ZEALAND GIFT EAST END RESIDENTS A PERMANENT REMINDER OF THE 2014 GAMES The Commonwealth Games may have ended but something very special is to remain behind in the east end of Glasgow thanks to a tremendous gesture by Team New Zealand. Pou whenua are wooden posts that mark territorial boundaries or places of significance. An important part of Maori culture, two specially designed Pou whenua were brought over with Team New Zealand to stand proudly at their entrance to their homes and offices within the Athletes Village. The Pou would normally be packed up and returned home but instead they have been gifted as a permanent reminder of the 233-strong Team New Zealand’s time in the east end. The elaborately-decorated Pou were designed by artist Rangi Kipa. The first contains the Kape Rua/ Kowhaiwhai design and was the pattern first used at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games and symbolises the human desire for constant improvement, development and growth. The second has the Pūhoro design, which is the dominant moko (tattoo)
symbol used on the legs and torso of a Maori warrior, denoting the power of water as a never-ending stream of energy. Both feature the Pukepoto/Blue Ochre - the colour used by the early Scottish tribes as a body adornment and now can be seen in the blue of the St Andrew’s Cross, featured on the Scottish flag. The Pride of New Zealand Tartan, which was specially designed for use by all New Zealanders more than twenty years ago and which has been formally registered on the Scottish Register of Tartans, is also very prominent within the Pou. Rob Waddell, the Chef de Mission of Team New Zealand, took time out from his busy schedule to sign the Pou donating them to the people of the east end of Glasgow. He said: “We are really delighted to be gifting to the city of Glasgow and the local area the two Pou which marked our position in the village. “We have used these to gather around, to welcome our team members and to celebrate our successes. “The Pou were designed by pre-
eminent Maori artist Rangi Kipi, and via the maori designs (Pūhoro and Kape Rua/Kowhaiwhai) they reflect our strong understanding of who were are as a people and where we are from. The Pride of New Zealand Tartan is used as a base for both and symbolises our strong links with Scotland and respect for our hosts.” The Vice-Chair of Clyde Gateway, Councillor George Redmond was invited along to the Games Village to accept the gift. He said: “I want to thank Rob Waddell and the entire team from New Zealand for this incredibly generous and kind gesture. “Over the coming weeks, Clyde Gateway will exhibit the Pou at various locations after which we will ensure they find permanent homes in community facilities close to the Athletes’ Village where they will be enjoyed and admired as well as providing a wonderful reminder of what has been an amazing Commonwealth Games.” Details of the venues, dates and times of where and when the Pau will be on display will be announced by Clyde Gateway in due course.

A major new campaign aimed at raising passenger awareness on illicit tobacco launched this week by the Tobacco Manufacturers’ Association and the Scottish Anti Illicit Trade Group at both Edinburgh and Glasgow airport. The illicit tobacco market costs the Government £2bn in lost tax revenue in 2012/13 and brings criminality into communities across Scotland. The Tobacco Manufacturers’ Association, and the Scottish Anti Illicit Trade Group are committed to tackling the issue and educating passengers who may not be fully aware that
bringing tobacco products into the UK and selling them on is a criminal offence. Giles Roca, Director General of the Tobacco Manufacturers’ Association (TMA), commented: “We are delighted to be working on this campaign which is designed to send a clear message that bringing back tobacco from abroad and selling it on is a criminal offence. Illegal tobacco causes untold damage to legitimate retailers who serve their local community and rely on tobacco sales to drive footfall to their stores, it is time to take a stand against this crime.”

Clyde-siders – your Barnardo’s shops need you! With their cheery ‘high fives’ and ‘happy-to-help’ attitude, the 15,000 Clyde-siders who volunteered at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow played a massive role in the event’s success. And now the Games are over, Barnardo’s Scotland hopes some of the 50,000 or so people who applied for volunteer duty at the Games might want to direct some of their goodwill towards helping out in the charity’s shops throughout the Glasgow region. Barnardo’s Scotland shops throughout Ayrshire, Inverclyde and Dunbartonshire – as well as the Glasgow area – are struggling to find enough volunteers. Magdalene Davie, Area Business Manager, said: “We had difficulties recruiting new volunteers while the Commonwealth Games were on as most people who had some spare time were taking the opportunity to be part of this amazing event.

A surge in passenger number has led to Glasgow airport having its busiest July in six years, with over 840,000 people using the west coast hub last month. With the Commonwealth Games taking place, many competitors and officials jetted into and out of Glasgow via the International Airport. Airport boss Amanda McMillan said: “To have recorded our busiest July in six years was extremely pleasing but it was a memorable month for so many reasons. From a route development perspective, we made a number of significant announcements, none more so than the news Ryanair will join us in October.”
The Irish budget airline will indeed begin flights out of Glasgow later in the year. Next year will see Virgin Atlantic flying directly to Las Vegas, while easyJet will have additional flights to Marrakech. Naturally with so many events taking place in Glasgow, the airport would enjoy an increase in usage and with the World Pipe Band Championships, the MTV European Music Awards and also the Ryder Cup in Gleneagles still to come, it is expected that the recent success will continue. This has followed a period of sustained growth for Glasgow Airport as July was the 18th consecutive month with a rise in passenger numbers.
Glasgow Airport, along with Aberdeen, has recently been put up for sale by owners Heathrow Airport Holdings. Other Scottish airports have followed the trend seen in Glasgow, with Edinburgh seeing more than 1.1 million passengers – a record for July – last month. In June, it also became the first Scottish airport to handle more than 10 million passengers over a twelve month period. Aberdeen too enjoyed a successful month, with a year on year rise of 9.2% in traffic being reported. By

Irish man arrested after throwing 3 million Euros Euros worth of cocaine out hotel window A hapless criminal signed his own custodial sentence after inadvertently launching a suitcase containing €3 million Euros worth of cocaine out his hotel window in a fit of paranoia. The 39 year old man had been staying on the eight floor in a hotel in Valencia apparently guarding two suitcases containing 55 kilograms of cocaine, hearing a noise and perceiving it as police or a rival gang approaching to steal his drugs, threw one of the suitcases out the eight floor window. The Irishman, a suspected drug trafficker, appeared at a behind closed door hearing before progressing to an investigation magistrate in Spain
Adding to the bizarre series of events, the would be trafficker removed ceiling tiles and an air vent in an attempt to hide his illegal stash. A receptionist alerted the Guardia after spotting the drugs scattered across the patio floor, and the eighth floor guest attempting to retrieve them. Police arrested the visibly distressed man after he locked himself out his hotel room carrying the second suitcase and asked the receptionist for a spare key. A spokeswoman for Valencia’s National Police said “I can confirm a 39 year old Irish national was arrested after police found him in possession of a suitcase full of cocaine.”

Gold medallist, Brian Whittle, joins NSPCC Scotland Two-times European Championship gold medallist, Brian Whittle, joins NSPCC Scotland in encouraging local people to ‘change the game’ for children and families. With around 15,000 people having given freely of their time to support this year’s Commonwealth Games, NSPCC Scotland is asking local people to consider making volunteering a way of life. Two-times European Championship gold medallist, Brian Whittle, said: “This is a very proud time for Scotland and an opportunity for us to join together to ensure a lasting legacy from the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Together we can build a happier, safer and healthier Scotland for generations to come.” Matt Forde from the children’s charity said that “a few hours of your time could, quite literally, be life-changing for a child”: “We know that, for so many people, the Commonwealth Games have offered a fantastic opportunity to
work together to put Scotland on the map. Over 50,000 people applied to one of the 15,000 volunteers - so there is clearly an appetite for opportunities to give back.”

I was allocated to work in the Press Conference Centre, which wasn’t an area I had ever had anything to do with before. That’s part of the challenge of volunteering though, taking on a new role in an area you’ve perhaps never been involved in throughout your working life. “Through training and shifts I’ve met many other volunteers and made new friends along the way. “She (Pamela’s cousin) said, ‘Oh it was a much more refined London accent than Daniel (Mays), who’s portraying him’. “I said, ‘Well that’s as maybe when he was at home, but you have no idea really… he would probably just have taken on the accent of the men he was with. “In those days you were either posh or you were a worker; the class system was such, and if your accent gave you away that you were a toff then he wouldn’t have had the confidence of the men he was with and trying to get the best from.” Having transcribed Reg’s assorted notes and letters, it gave Pamela a better understanding of her dad, and mother.

Biologist Patrick Aryee and physicist Helen Czerski explore the world of animal senses to reveal how they detect things beyond the limits of human perception, conducting experiments and demonstrations featuring a variety of species. They begin by investigating sight and reveal how caribou – wild reindeer of Alaska – use ultraviolet light to avoid their predators. They also discover how the dragonfly's ability to view things in slow motion allows it to make a kill, and show how a snake can see in the pitch dark without using its eyes.

Past Life Regression

Past Life Regression is frequently used for psychotherapeutic purposes, but more commonly, it is a means of satisfying curiosity about one’s previous lives, like a form of self-discovery. This in itself can be a spiritual experience and therapeutic in its own right.
Criticism of this technique is mainly based on the claim that the hypnotist puts leading questions to the subject, thereby creating false memories. However, many critics do not understand that the hypnotist is trained specifically to avoid leading questions, avoiding a session that would be little more than farcical.
Another hazard is what is known as cryptomnesia (literally hidden memory), and this has to be examined closely to filter out any false memories e.g. a novel you have just read or a movie you have recently watched, from the real past life memories.
The practice of Past Life Regression through hypnosis is completely safe and extremely relaxing. The individual under hypnosis is in full control at all times and is fully aware of all that is happening throughout. A single session usually lasts about an hour, sometimes longer, and there is always a great sense of relaxation afterwards.
Case Study;
I have conducted many past life regressions in recent years, and the case history below is a typical example (taken from my book A Knight to Remember). One lady, called Jean, in her mid-fifties, came to me with stories of recurring dreams, and was intrigued by the thought of having lived in the past. She was a PA to the Chairman of a very successful scientific corporation, and at the top of her profession. Not the gullible stereotype as any sceptic would imagine. Her success in discovering past lives I believe, is down to her open-minded approach, right from the start. To her later surprise, nothing of her recurring dreams was revealed in this first session. She requested that I take her to a life where she was with her “soul mate” and I duly complied. Following is the condensed transcript of this first session…
Me … now go through the door behind where you will find your soul –mate, describe the door. Jean - It is creamy coloured.

Me, you have a château… does your husband have a title? Jean, He has no title. He is a merchant with many ships. Me, what does Pierre trade in? Jean, He buys and sells silks.
Me, have you seen his ships?
Jean, Yes, they are big boats with huge sails. Me, where did you see these ships?
Jean, Marseilles. I have been to Marseilles, and I have also been to Lyon. Me, have you been to Paris?
Jean, No, and I don’t want to go there. I have heard it is too dirty.
Me, now, move forward to when you are forty years old. What year is it now? Jean, It is the Year of Our Lord 1632. Me, where are you now?
Jean, I am living in Paris.
Me, why are you not living in Paris? Jean, Pierre is no longer a merchant.
Me, how does he make a living?
Jean, He works with the government. Me, do you have children?
Jean, Lorraine is twelve…Suzanne is ten… and Thomas is five. Me, do you look after the children?
Jean, We have a governess and a housekeeper, living in. We also have a cook who comes in. I like to cook, but my husband does not like me to cook. Please don’t tell my husband that I cook.
Me, now move forward to when you are fifty years old. (No response.) Go now to the day when you died. How old are you? Jean, Forty-six.
Me, where are you? Jean, I am in bed.
Me, what is your illness?
Jean, It is called many things… The Black Death. Me, is Pierre your soul mate?
Jean, No, he is not my soul-mate.
Me, now go to a time in this life when you are with your soul –mate. Where are you? Jean, I am in a chateau with Jacques. Me, how old are you? Jean, I am sixteen.
Me, how old is Jacques?
Jean, He is thirty-five… we love each other. Me, go to the day when Jacques died. How old are you now? MARIELLE? Jean, I am eighteen. (Session ends).
Historical Context.
Chateau Vert du Bois still exists as a hotel in the St. Etienne area, although the name is very common among chateaux. St. Etienne was noted for being the centre for the silk trade in the 1600s. In Lyon in 1632, 60,000 people died of plague. Perhaps Marielle moved north to Paris, a city she detested, to escape the plague, but ultimately succumbed to it when it too reached Paris six years later. Was the plague also the reason for Pierre ceasing to be a merchant, and to work for the government in Paris instead? Marielle’s time with Jacques was short…he died in 1610. If her oldest child Lorraine was born in 1620, Marielle perhaps married Pierre around 1619 when she would have been twenty- seven. This past life regression with Jean was a surprise to her, and it did throw up some interesting detail about a life as a wife of a rich silk trader in France in the seventeenth century. From a very young age I have been “psychic” and I’ve worked professionally with the world of spirit for over 30 years now. During that time people often ask me things like, what is it like? How do you do it? How you do you get the messages? And many other questions like this so, let me try and give you an understanding of how it all works for me. When I am “going to work” as I term it, I have a kind of ritual so to speak. Like anyone, preparing themselves to engage in their work we all have something that gets us into the zone and for me that starts with spend my day with nerves in my stomach which I have come to realise is, the way I build energy to connect with spirit especially, if I am preparing for a show. As they day moves on I do some gentle meditation and this is when I get my first connection with spirit, now, I have to say that most mediums won’t get their connection until they actually stand up to do their demonstration but, that would never work for me personally. When I tune into spirit energy it can come in the form of a vision of the person who has passed over which I will either see in my minds eye [the same as when you daydream] or I will visibly see them. If I see them it can be as a shadowy form or as transparent – normally I can see what they are wearing and how they would have dressed – this happens so that I can pass this information onto their loved ones as their appearance is obviously relevant. Then comes their characteristics – as a medium you need to get the measure of the soul, how would they have been e.g. funny, dry wit, serious, caring or deep and these
are all pieces of information for the person to let them know that this is really their loved one. To me its all about the element of proof, if you can’t tell someone facts and things that they know to be true about the soul who has passed over then there is no point in telling them anything about what’s ahead because there are no foundations to build on. Next might comes some information that is personal to the person and once again this is to assure them it is real – I love when spirit come in and give me a cracking piece of information that blows the persons socks off because it was so relevant and no one else could have known it. Examples of this would be; I was giving a woman a reading in connection with her loved one in spirit and told her that she had recently done something special for them, it was not a head stone they had put down but a plaque she had made for her loved one which was true. Another woman came for a reading and I told her about the Glass eye that her father was telling me about, it would sit on the mantelpiece again, true. One of the ones I will never forget was when giving a demonstration at a spiritualist church, I spoke to a man there and was telling him the following “ a gentleman in spirit shows me you were at a funeral this week, he says I thought when you passed over that nothing much else could go wrong – this man obviously has a good sense of humour as he comes forward – he is telling me that the ground was so wet the people carrying the coffin slipped, the coffin dropped and the lid came lose” the man said “that’s exactly what had happened” Now, you can imagine this would have been anything but funny
But you may know them more in the shape of a crystal ball, which psychics, gypsies and spiritual folk have used since the Middle Ages.
however; the man in spirit was just of the nature that to him, this was funny and to me a wonderful piece of evidence from the spirit world. Spirit love to give proof positive that they are with you that there is something beyond this earthly plane and that to me is important. Its not just the visuals I get though, I hear spirit, not the way we would have a conversation but its like the wee inner voice – I sense them also, which means I know what they were like and I pick up on their illness before passing. The latter for me can be difficult as I get the feelings and conditions from spirit so that I can pass them on for the person but, as soon as I’ve passed them on, I give the feelings back to the spirit world as they don’t belong with me. My connections with the spirit world have been nothing short of amazing – they give proof and I am always in awe of what can happen during the connection, no matter how long I’ve been doing this work I always feel the same - the day I don’t have that feeling is the day I will give it up. Spirit are never wrong however, I often say its like being an interpreter as I have to make sense of the information I get in order to pass it on and there are times I get it a bit mixed up, it does work itself out in the end but, I trust them one hundred percent. This is a snapshot of how spirit connection works for me. Once the door is opened they are there to bring forward the information and to let loved ones on the earth plane know they are happy and at peace - this is what brings comfort.

Its all about a leap of faith and trusting that what you are about to do will pay off, almost like the Indiana Jones film where e was to take a step onto a path but there was none there and he had to trust that it would all be fine – which it was. Out & About in Glasgow... The Raven By
If there is one foodie trend that’s hit Glasgow it is the phenomena that is pulled pork. It’s popping up everywhere, and when done right, it is delicious. So when I heard that new bar & restaurant The Raven had it on their menu, I just had to try it. I was invited along last Friday, and as I knew the menu was heavily meat-based I took my boyfriend - who would live off steak 24/7 if he could. Walking in on a rainy Friday afternoon, we walked through the
traditional bar and were greeted by friendly staff who took us to our seat. As we slided into our booth, my eyes were immediately drawn to the end of the table where it was lined with a selection of sauces, wet wipes and
a whole kitchen roll. This is going to be messy I thought, instantly relieved I never wore white.

The Raven have a selection of craft beers which I thought would be rude not to try! We tried the Def not the Official Beer of (Eden) 4.7%, which was a light floral beer, with hints of elderflower, and the Killella (Houston), 3.7%, a dark ale. Then it was time to choose what to eat. The waiting staff were very helpful, explaining the menu, their recommendations and telling us what sauces on our table go with what. They told about their Lunchtime Deal of a sandwich, chips and a soft drink for £6. They really knew what they were talking about and took a lot of time explaining everything. Turns out one of the waitresses wasn’t even aware we were doing a review, which shows that they were being really genuine. We went for the Sharing Platter #4 (£17.00), alongside Mac Cheese (£2.50) and Sweet Potato Fries (£3.00). The platter consists of half a rack of baby back ribs, half a smoked chicken, pulled pork, pickled slaw and corn on the cob. The meat is slow cooked for 12 hours over seasoned woodchips, so when it’s gone, it’s gone. The food arrived promptly and my mouth fell open as the sharing platter was put down in front of us. There was a LOT of meat! The chicken was so tender and juicy, not dry in the slightest. The meat fell away from the ribs and

Well why don’t you invest in the last castle to be built in Scotland? Yours for a bargain price of £1.2 million pounds. For the same price as a modest one bedroom apartment in London, you can lay claim to owning your very own castle. A castle that possesses its own train station (disused) nevertheless. The last castle to be built in Scotland, officially known as the Castle of Spite, due to the ongoing bitter rows that engulfed the family during its construction. Construction started in 1906 and took 11 years before it was fully completed. The majestic archaic building spans
a 40,000 sq ft footprint and was officially the last castle built in Scotland.
Although the castle is in need of some restoration the eventual owner will also lay claim to 16 acres of land which gives fairytale-esque views of the surrounding Highland landscape. Carl Warden of Savilla estate agency described the castle as “stunning, idyllic and entirely remote. He continued “It’s not a spot that you’d stumble across without knowing its whereabouts.” “However, at the end of the main driveway, which is about half a mile long there is a railway stop so despite its remoteness, it pretty much has its own train station. Tentants behaving badly: AXA warns landlords they are not doing enough to protect themselves The nation’s landlords are leaving themselves exposed to the country’s worst tenants by failing to carry out basic checks, AXA has warned. With the rental market’s peak season about to start, AXA reveals just how many of the UK’s estimated 8.3 million tenants are behaving badly and how poorly protected landlords really are when the worst happens. Research carried out by AXA, one of the UK’s largest insurance companies, revealed that almost 60% of tenants admit to breaking the terms of their rental agreement, and a third had broken the law in relation to their rental. In particular: 26% of tenants pay their rent late, one in 10 tenants admit to having done a moonlight flit to avoid paying the landlord money, 18% have kept pets in the property without the landlord’s permission, 15% have received complaints from neighbours for excessive noise, 8% have sub-let to someone else without the landlord’s permission.
At the most serious end of the scale, eight per cent of tenants – equivalent to two thirds of a million tenants nationwide – admit to actually committing a crime on the landlord’s premises, and a similar figure (10%) say they’ve had the police called to the property. While these tenants remain in the minority, landlords do carry a legal responsibility to ensure that their premises are not used for criminal purposes. Under the Misuse of Drugs Act, landlords can face prosecution if a tenant is found to be producing cannabis or banned substances on their property. AXA warns that while the responsibilities on landlords to keep their houses in order are getting stricter, many are still failing to carry out any checks on their tenants or even visit their properties at all. The research found that 38% of landlords carry out no checks on prospective tenants, and only five per cent carry out a criminal record check. Meanwhile, a third of landlords never visit their property during a rental.

Tenancy agreements are also an important part of the picture, giving the landlord a firm foundation to evict non-paying tenants or claim damages for financial loss caused by the tenant. AXA found that landlords are getting better on this front – this year’s study revealed that 75% of rentals are now based on a formal agreement, compared to just 52% at the beginning of 2013. “During the recession, we saw a significant increase in the number of accidental landlords – people who never expected to rent out their property, but couldn’t sell a former home or needed the additional income. With a booming rental market, they aren’t going anywhere”, said Darrell Sansom, Managing Director at AXA Business Insurance. “While legislation toughens, we need to make sure that enough is being done to inform and educate landlords too. Certainly, our experience is that many new landlords aren’t wilfully failing in their duties, they simply aren’t aware of all their obligations and commitments.”
Planning permission for student flats near Partick Cross passed
The go-ahead to build student flats has been given by planners after it was revealed that there is a considerable shortage for young people at university. Glasgow Harbour is planning to build 503 studio style flats on a site near Beith Street, Castlebank Street and Anderson Street. There will also be two shops in the 10 storey development. A recent study by Glasgow City Council found that there is a total of 50,880 full-time students and 14,195 part-time students attending Glasgow, Strathclyde and Caledonian universities, Glasgow School of Art and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. The five main higher education institutions in Glasgow offer accommodation for 6219 students often only to students starting in first year. This makes up only 10% of the
total student population in the city. The private sector offers accommodation for 4678 students, around 7% of the student population. Planning permission has recently been passed for 15 student accommodation developments and are under construction or yet to be started. These will provide a further 2714 student beds. A report from Richard Brown, the council’s executive director of development and regeneration, says: “When combined, these factors offer accommodation for 13,611 students which is 21% of all students, meaning 51,645 students are residing at home with parents, in HMO’s or other private rented accommodation.” By

Hyundai unveils new generation i20 With the launch of its latest model, Hyundai Motor is continuing its successful presence in Europe’s B-segment, highlighted by almost one million sales since 2002. The popularity of the original i20 has made it one of the company’s bestselling cars in the region. The key aims of the new model are to open Hyundai to an even wider audience; further develop perceptions of the brand; and confirm Hyundai’s position as a truly European automaker. The New Generation i20 has been designed and developed in Europe, and three key attributes in particular underline how it meets the needs of European consumers: class-leading interior space, a host of high-technology and comfort-enhancing features, and distinctive, refined design. Based on a new platform, New Generation i20 features a 2570 mm wheelbase – 45 mm longer than its predecessor – providing European customers with one of the most spacious cabins in the
segment. Efficient packaging has created a passenger compartment that can comfortably seat five adults. Combined front and rear legroom is best in class at 1892 mm. Boot capacity is also segment-leading: 326 litres when the rear seats are upright. Enhancing the comfort and the sense of space for driver and passengers is a unique-in-class panoramic sunroof. Able to both tilt and fully open, it fills the cabin with natural light and fresh air. Further features add to the refinement and convenience of New Generation i20, including integrated rear-view camera and front and rear LED lighting. Interior refinement complements the sophisticated and distinctive exterior styling of the New Generation i20. Influenced by the brand’s ‘Fluidic Sculpture 2.0’ design philosophy, the car’s clear and simple overall architecture was penned at Hyundai Motor’s Design Centre Europe in Rüsselsheim, Germany. Hyundai’s European design team has created a bold front aesthetic. The upright chrome-framed hexagonal
grille has been lowered for design and engineering purposes. A thin, horizontal grille connects the front headlamp clusters, which include bi-function projection headlamps, LED daytime running lights and LED positioning lamps. A lower grille houses the front fog lamps, and emphasises the powerful stance of the car. The 4035 mm long bodyshell incorporates a single feature-line running the length of the vehicle, sculptured undercuts of the body panels, and a waistline moulding at the base of the door. At the rear, New Generation i20 features a gloss-finished black C-pillar that gives the impression of a floating roofline. The lamp clusters wrap around the rear wing into the boot lid and feature a ‘boomerang’shaped LED design. The public world premiere of the New Generation i20 will take place during Hyundai’s press conference at 2014 Paris Motor Show in Hall 3, at 16:00 CET on Thursday 2 October.
American racing driver killed during sprint race Tragedy struck at a sprint race track in New York as one of the competitors was struck by another car and died. Kevin Ward Jr, 20, had got out of his car to remonstrate with another driver, with whom he had collided on the previous lap. That driver was Tony Stewart – a three-time Nascar champion. Stewart is a well known athlete in the United states and placed at number 83 of Forbes list of highest paid athletes in 2013. Footage of the incident surfaced online, clearly showing Ward being struck by Stewart’s car a lap after
the two had collided – sending Ward spinning into the side of the track and out of the race. Ward is shown angrily gesturing towards the car as it returned round the track towards where he had climbed out of his own wrecked vehicle. The horrifying clip showed the back end of the car clipping Ward, sending him flying down the track. He was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital. The remainder of the race was cancelled within five minutes of the incident and Stewart withdrew from a scheduled race the next night. Stewart was not facing any criminal charges at the time of writing, having co-operated with police.

‘Tis ‘The Season’, the time of the year wealthy London districts, such as Kensington and Knightsbridge, play host to a fleet of luxury cars brought over from the likes of Dubai and Kuwait. The cars are largely owned by mega-rich Arabs looking to escape the searing heat of the Middle East by spending their summer holidays in London. It has become a regular fixture as the late summer months roll round, six and seven figure valued cars are shipped to Europe so the owners aren’t without their luxury playthings. First they will be sighted in Cannes before making their way to England’s capital to line the streets outside highend fashion stores as the owners pop in to continue their conspicuous show of wealth. The influx of the supercars also brings car enthusiasts – dubbed the ‘Carparazzi’ – who come to ogle, film and photograph their dream cars.
Ontario County Sheriff Philip said: “This is being investigated as on on-track crash and I don’t want to infer that there are criminal charges pending. “When the investigation is completed, we will sit down with the district attorney and review it. “But I want to make it very clear – there are no criminal charges pending at this time.” By

Ferraris, Bugattis and Lamborghinis are some of the most popular makes that can be sighted, these really are more like cars out of a computer game. Often the owners will try and out-do each other with more outlandish and garish modifications to make their particular toy shinier than the rest. The winners this summer would probably be the gold wrapped Ferrari and Range Rover that could be seen dazzling people as the summer
sun bounced off their exteriors. Not everyone has been pleased with the sight of the cars – with some local residents complaining of the nuisance of ‘The Season’ as it has come to be known. Some have complained of the noise as the drivers rev the engines while racing round the usually sleepy streets of Knightsbridge. With such deep wallets, the owners don’t seem to mind parking fines either, as the cars can often be spotted parked on double yellow lines, amongst other violations. However, it may also be the case that their simply not worried about paying up, since it’s so difficult to track the owners down. Westminster council has said fines given to cars registered in the United Arab Emirates have jumped in recent years, with a total of £57,060 given out last year – nearly doubling the £31,780 total from 2011/12. A spokesman said: “We do all we can to ensure that all outstanding fine are paid – whatever the nationality of the driver. “However, when cars aren’t registered in this country, it is sometimes extremely difficult to track people down. “We already work with an agency to help recover money owed by European drivers and we’re currently exploring other avenues that might further our success. The start and end point here is that every driver who parks in Westminster is subject to the same laws.” By

Glasgow rocks re-sign Jonny Bunyan Fan favourite, Jonny Bunyan, will return to the Glasgow Rocks for a 4th straight season.
Jonny has been part of the Glasgow Rocks squad for the past 3 seasons and has continually improved his game. Last season saw him take on the back-up point guard position and he will once again be asked to take on the pivotal role this coming season for the Rocks. Jonny is eager to build on his impressive performances last season, especially the games towards the latter end of the season: “I am really happy to be back for another season and I am looking forward to playing in Glasgow again. The recent Commonwealth Games have definitely inspired me! I have been itching to get back onto the court and push towards my own goals of playing for Scotland in 2018 at the Gold Coast and help the Rocks towards their goal of attaining some Silverware”. Jonny will be coming off winning a Bronze medal at the recent Senior Men FIBA European Championships for Small Countries tournament, where he averaged 10 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. Jonny’s Scottish heritage makes him a valuable commodity for the
Glasgow Rocks as he stands as a great role model for any young aspiring Scottish Basketball Player. Rocks head coach Sterling Davis had the following to say on the re-signing of Jonny Bunyan: “It’s good to have JB back in a Rocks uniform for another season. With Fraser Forster leaving the club for Southampton in a deal thought to be worth £10 million, Deila knows there is cash to be spent, but insisted it would not be wasted: “I really hope we can
get a player to make a difference in the games against Maribor.
“It’s a hard market but if the right player is there, money is available.” Deila also revealed Celtic had agreed a deal to sign Haitian midfielder Jeff Louis from Nancy, but the player instead opted to sign with Standard Liege – on a lower wage than Celtic offered. The Norwegian added: “There is still a long time to go in the transfer market. In my head I know what I wamt. We’ll see if it’s possible. If I get it, I’ll b happy and I think the fans will be too. “But it’s important to keep consistency
and do things slowly. You can’t do it all in one window. It’s important not to lose your head.”
Ultimately the players he has at his disposal just now will likely be the ones that take the field against Maribor and Deila will have to hope they put on a far more impressive display if he has any hope of guiding Celtic back to the promised land of the Champions League group stage. If his side do qualify for the money spinning round, the Celtic board will surely have to splash the cash to ensure the side don’t face embarrassment against Europe’s top sides.

It’s back to Premier League action at Ashfield this Sunday afternoon as the Glasgow Tigers look to get back on track having had their quarter final Knock Out Cup tie with Newcastle washed out last weekend. Having had no race action since over powering fourth placed Scunthorpe on 4th August, the Glasgow riders will have to shed any rustiness and instead pull out their very best form as they face the visit on Sunday of defending league champions, currently placed second in the league table, Somerset Rebels. The visitors travel North as part of a tour which takes them to Edinburgh (Friday) and Berwick (Saturday) before they arrive at Ashfield for tapes-up at 3pm this Sunday. Morris who was brought to the UK by the Tigers in 2010 and helped Glasgow win the league in 2011. Morris has some talented back-up within the Somerset side and they will unquestionably push the Tigers very hard to determine the fate of Sunday’s league points. The Tigers will again track a full side – for only the third time since end April – which will allow the same side to face Somerset as had comfortably out gunned 4th placed Scunthorpe just over a week ago. The meeting will mark only the second home fixture for new Swede Victor Palovaara who will hope to improve greatly on his single point debut score, whilst Tigers will also look to talented French ace Dimitri Berge to re discover his pre injury scoring touch which made him an early season sensation for Glasgow.
Tigers will be buoyed by the ease of their recent win against Scunthorpe however will need to take that same attitude and discipline into Sunday’s meeting if they are to be able to come out on top against Somerset, a view shared by skipper Theo Pijper who himself scored the club’s first full maximum of the season in that recent win: “We have the riders to beat Somerset, we have developed a belief in ourselves and just need to keep that going now. It is our home track and we all know how to ride it, so must make sure that we avoid mistakes and perform with confidence in just the same way we did against Scunthorpe. McCoist demands improvement from players After beginning their quest to get back to the top tier of Scottish football in the worst possible fashion, Rangers’ boss Ally McCoist has warned his stars they need to shape up fast to get their title challenge back on track.

AGAINST ALL ODDS Ladies and Gentlemen, Saturday omnibus’ of Coronation Street are over, Soccer Saturday’s are back!! Thankfully we had the World Cup as our non-medicinal relief this summer, but nothing quite beats the fix of opening day of the Premiership. The 16th of August sees LVG open the season at the Theatre of Dreams (temporarily renamed the theatre of nightmares last year), hosting Swansea. With Wayne Rooney being tasked with club captaincy, expect more passion from him, take Rooney and Utd to win at odds of around 5/4 Wenger’s new look, cash injected, Arsenal side look like serious title contenders this year, take them to win both the 1st and 2nd half at odds of 8/5. Perennial “both teams to score” side, Everton, open the season away to Leicester. Expect them to drop their usual one goal, but with Lukaku signed up long term now, for a mere 28m, the Toffees should have too much fire power for Leicester. Take btts and Everton to win at huge odds of 13/2 Liverpool take on Southampton in their opening match, with Liverpool having bought the majority of the Southampton side from last year, expect some added tension to the game. The Saints did bolster their squad also though, with La Gran Murella being installed as their new No.1. I fancy a few goals in this one, take btts and Liverpool to win at 21/10
